MANAGER’S NOTES All the latest news at www.stneotstownfc.co.uk
Not Impossible Iain Parr Hello to all from Corby for tonight’s match I hope you enjoy your time with us. After losing to a very good Chesham team took the long journey to Bideford last Saturday.
Strike Force We now have three very good strikers, and can now plan our team out to be more attacking because of these options open to us.
This of course gives momentum and confidence to any team but will still take a little time for all the players to gel. Next Saturday gives us an opportunity to play in cup football and will be a welcome break from the league and another game to settle players in.
I believe that we now have a squad that can move us up the league and get us into a respectable position.
In the hat Matlock are a very good side playing at the same level as us but I think it is a very winnable game and we want to be in the hat for the next round.
This of course gives momentum and confidence to any team but will still take a little time for all the players to gel. Hopefully we will all see the rewards of our recent signings in the months to come.
Our performance in the last round against Halesowen really was a very good one and a repeat of that is what we will be looking for. Twelve games into the season and our record has not been that good
but out of those twelve games only three of them have been where we were well beaten. Mission Possible So thirty games to go ninety points to be played for makes our task not an impossible one. I know it’s been a frustrating season for all of you and me but what has passed has passed and we need to look ahead and get our season underway. Nine new signings will I’m sure go some way to doing that.
and on Twitter @StNeotsTownFC
Injuries to key players in Edd and Searsy for tonight’s game is not ideal but our larger squad gives us more options with players both in the starting eleven and on the bench.

Basic Errors We knew it would be a hard match as Bideford were unbeaten in the league this season and were sitting in third position in the league. We made some changes to the team and I was really disappointed that we came away losing by the odd goal in five. We could have and should have been two goals up in the first fifteen minutes but as happens just too often with us, basic errors cost us the first goal and a dubious penalty the second. Bideford were a very hard working big strong team that did not allow us to play football. I has happy with the substitute’s in that game especially Lewis Wilson who showed his eye for goal with his first for the club.
Keep the faith.

ACTION REPLAY
04
This week 8 years ago (With the current Saints Manager banging them in!) UCL Premier Division: 25th October 2005 - St Neots Town 4 Potton United 1 This was real Roy of the Rovers stuff. League leaders Potton came to St Neots looking for a fourth consecutive victory over the Saints but home player/manager Steve Kuhne himself a Potton player last season decided not to read the script He contributed a personal hat trick as St Neots toppled their neighbours and now in just four days St Neots have beaten the top two sides in cup and league respectively. The wind made it difficult for the sides but St Neots always looked in control and Potton’s ambitions were blunted when substitute Andy Carter was sent off for a reckless and dangerous tackle on Nicky Hurst after just twelve minutes on the field. In the end despite showing defiance when reduced to ten men Potton were a well-beaten side and really did not do themselves justice with their overall display. Although it was only St Neots second home victory of the season it will boost their confidence. St Neots keeper Stefan Shamlian had to produce a full length save in the opening minute to turn away a Wes Byrne header but then there was a quiet spell before St Neots edged ahead. The goal came from a perfectly delivered Russell Lawes free kick headed back across goal to be swept in by Steve Kuhne. Shamlian then did well to leave his line to rob John Coley who was clear but clear chances were few considering that Potton are the leading divisional scorers with 31 goals so far this season. Both Byrne and Dave Brown wasted chances for the visitors and at the other end Brad Gilham produced a fine reflex save to keep out a powerful header from Nicky Hurst. With their Manager removed from the technical area for abusing an Assistant Referee Potton were showing signs of indiscipline as Luke Donnelly was booked for dissent.
The second half started in spectacular style after two minutes as Nathan Buckland freed Cameron Clark on the overlap and his cross to the far post was turned in by Mark Franklin to register his first goal in St Neots colours. Nathan Buckland then had a net bound shot turned over the bar by Gilham as St Neots pressed and after 54 minutes an electrifying run down the left flank by Franklin saw him leave two defenders behind as he crossed for Steve Kuhne to increase the lead to 3-0 with an unstoppable header. After 71 minutes there was a slight St Neots wobble when Nicky Hurst headed a Paul Donnelly cross into his own net but three minutes later Potton were reduced to ten men following that awful tackle. To their credit they threw caution to the wind and worked hard enough to make their player shortage not seem apparent. However there were gaps at the back and after Gilham had denied Gary Walker with a close range save Danny Griggs was hauled down in the area by Colin Shambrook and after a farcical delay in which Gilham was booked for ungentlemanly conduct Kuhne joyfully completed his hat trick from the penalty spot to take his goals tally to 18 this season in just 19 matches. St Neots: Shamlian, Clark, Lawes, Matthews, Hurst, Hoggett, Griggs, Buckland, Kuhne, Walker (Weedon 90m), Franklin (Dellar 80m). Subs: (not used) Brown, Moule, Fox Goals: Kuhne (3) 13 min, 54m & 88m (pen) - Franklin 47m

Calor League Premier Division Rowley Park - The Cozy Stadium (Att 224) Tuesday 22nd October 2013 - Kick Off 19:45 - Referee: Jon Burridge (Papworth)

Subs: Little (for Braithwaite 63 mins), Effiong (for Dillon 72 mins), Fotheringham (for Wilson 76 mins), Brown and Beasant.
This was not the time that St Neots would have chosen to play in-form Chesham who are second in the table with only two league defeats in twelve outings. More than half the St Neots side still only have a handful of club appearances between them and they were knocked out of their stride by a very determined, ruthless and efficient visiting team. However having been outplayed by Chesham in the first 45 minutes St Neots produced a much better second half performance only to concede a late goal against the run of play that made the overall performance look worse than the score line suggests. Chesham are the second highest scorers in the league and their finishing was irresistible and St Neots will be glad that they will not have to face this sort of forward play very often. Manager Iain Parr was able to name an unchanged line up from that which had returned from Halesowen with a deserved FA Trophy victory but they never looked in control or ever genuinely competitive until they were four goals behind. Intent The visitors gave an early notice of intent when after just fifteen seconds Chris Dillon slammed a fierce volley into the chest of the St Neots goalkeeper after a slick move down the right flank and that heralded a fifteen minutes spell of sustained pressure with St Neots
only managing a single shot at goal when Jake Woolley shot into the side netting after a clever through pass from Adrian Sear. Ironically having weathered this early pressure St Neots then conceded the first goal after fifteen minutes with no build up play as Steve Wales curled a well placed shot from 25 yards well beyond the reach of Niall Conroy. Leading Chesham scorer Drew Roberts was then left unmarked but headed wide and in a break from defence Lewis Hilliard looked well placed but could only shoot weakly at Shane Gore. After 25 minutes the visitors doubled their lead with a well constructed goal as a long ball out of defence by Daniel Braithwaite to the far right flank found Chris Dillon and he cut in the beat Conroy with a low shot. At that point St Neots play became ragged and nine minutes before the break Roberts crossed to the far post where James Potton drifted in to net from close range. The three goal margin between the sides clearly summed up Chesham’s confident superiority and it was down to St Neots to respond. Deteriorated However matters deteriorated further just three minutes into the second half when a poor defensive clearance fell to Drew Roberts and his
screaming shot from 25 yards gave Conroy no chance as it flew in just under the bar. St Neots responded sending on substitute Liam Hurst and Bobby-Joe Taylor and for twenty five minutes they responded well taking the game to Chesham who decided to sit on their considerable lead by pulling an extra player back in defence to smother St Neots better efforts. Taylor had a net bound shot blocked by a defender and Hilliard and substitute Ben Ford both brought useful saves from Gore but the Chesham defence looked fairly impregnable. Save of the match The best St Neots effort of the game came from Ben Ford nine minutes from time when Gavin Hoyte broke up an attack and found him in midfield and his low shot forced Gore into the save of the match at the expense of a corner. Sadly St Neots determination to claim a consolation goal rebounded on then when a Dave Fotheringham shot looked to be covered by Conroy until Potton diverted it wide of him to complete Chesham’s nap hand. MATCH REPORT
The Sports Ground (Att 215) Saturday 26th October 2013 - Kick Off 15:00 - Referee: Mark Lawrence (Bridgewater)
Bideford Yeoman 3 (25, 75 and 86 mins) n n None Oliver, Downing, Reed, Furzer, Farkins, Gerring, Bye, Yeoman, Squire, Howe, Duff Subs: Barker (for Gerring 31 mins), Clifford ( for Howe 67 mins), Groves, and Phillips.
3:2
St Neots Town Wilson (61 mins), Davies (90 + 2 pen) n n None Conroy, Deeney, Ducket, Hibbert, Ann, Hoyte, Davies, Woolley, Sear, Nolan, Hurst, Taylor. Subs: Davies (for Ducket 54 mins), Wilson (for Woolley 57 mins), Crowie (for Hurst 82 mins), Hilliard and Ford.
St Neots started with a 4-1-4-1 formation and after Niall Conroy had saved a Steven Reed free kick they might have gone in front when Jake Woolley fed the unmarked Matt Nolan who went round the home
keeper but shot across the face of the unguarded goal from a narrow angle. Conroy was then forced to make an important save pushing a close range Rob Farkins volley over his cross bar. However St Neots was giving as good as they got and after 17 minutes Nolan found Woolley with a clever reverse pass and his shot across Steve Oliver bounced off the inside of the far post into the grateful keeper’s arms. Bideford main threat was coming down their right flank from the speedy Sean Downing who was giving Mark Ducket a torrid time and inevitably it was Downing who created the opening goal with a run and cross that saw Owen Howe’s low shot blocked but Ashley Yeoman reacted first to ram the ball past Conroy. That setback signalled a change in St Neots’ tactics with Woolley pushed up to partner Nolan in a standard 4-4-2 formation and chances came with both Adrian Sear and Leon Hibbert both firing over the Bideford cross bar. Bideford then lost defender Ben Gerring with a knee injury replaced by Nick Barker and the first half ended with St Neots pressing for an equaliser. St Neots also lost a defender shortly after half time with Ducket helped off suffering from a suspected displaced shoulder and this let on
substitute Jay Davies with the versatile Liam Hurst slotting in at full back. Matt Nolan was brought down on the edge of the penalty area But the resultant Davies free kick was cleared and after 61 minutes St Neots deservedly levelled the scores as Davies sent a long cross field pass to find Nolan wide of the left and his early cross was volleyed home from close range by Lewis Wilson. Kevin Squire volleyed over the bar when left unmarked at the far post and the action continued end to end with substitute Lewis Wilson on his debut firing wide. Then after 75 minutes Gavin Hoyte was harshly judged to have impeded Jack Furzer and Yeoman sent Conroy the wrong way with his well placed penalty kick. This was hard on St Neots who were competing well and they pushed forward looking for a second equaliser with Dan Crowie on as a extra striker but it all went wrong when four minutes from the end of normal time the visiting defence was caught short and Matty Bye set up Yeoman to claim his hat trick. However in added time Sear was upended by Furzer and Jay Davies tucked away the penalty kick to give the final score line the closeness the game had justified. John Walker

They are now undefeated in their opening twelve league matches this season and their rejuvenated side has several new experienced players including loanee Ashley Yeoman from Football League outfit Torquay United and he proved to be the significant difference between the sides on the day as he contributed a personal hat trick. St Neots Manager Iain Parr sprang something of a surprise when he announced his team making four changes and including Matt Nolan, Mark Ducket and the two Cambridge United loanees Liam Hurst and Bobby-Joe Taylor in the starting line up. Out of the side went the injured Ed Adjei and Jhai Dhillon with Jay Davies and the previously everpresent Lewis Hilliard both starting on the substitutes’ bench. Despite returning home pointless and dropping to bottom but one in the league table St Neots contributed in no small part to an exciting and entertaining match and the overall improvement in their performance was only marred by a couple of unfortunate defensive lapses.

He left the club for a couple of months in season 2012-2013 to try his luck at a higher level where he was quite outstanding, however because of budget restraints he returned to the Saints and slotted back into his old routine of giving it everything he had with a wonderful “We will never get beaten attitude.

GREENIES GREETINGS
12
Marathon Trek Mike Green Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium for tonight’s Calor League Premier Division game.
Hopefully The Steelmen will have taken their eye off the ball once the whistle goes and will still be dreaming of Cup success this evening Tonight we extend a very warm welcome to the Players, Officials and supporters of Corby Town FC and we hope you have an enjoyable, if brief, stay with us before returning along the A14 into Northamptonshire. After last Tuesday’s poor performance against high flying Chesham here at The Cozy, the marathon trek down to Devon to Third placed Bideford really couldn’t have come at a worse time for us. Although we returned empty handed, I’m led to believe it was a much improved performance and had the early chances we created hit the back of the net instead of the woodwork and flying across the goal, who knows, the result may have been a little different. A quick
well done to debut boy Lewis Wilson, who managed to score with little over a minute elapsed after entering the fray. I hope this is the sign of a fruitful partnership being struck up with Matt Nolan and the first of many goals to come. As you probably know our opponents arrive here this evening having progressed into the First Round Proper of the FA CUP, and have been drawn at home to Dover Athletic. Our good Friends and near neighbours Biggleswade Town have been drawn at fellow Calor Premier side Stourbridge, meaning one of our division’s sides is guaranteed a Second Round berth, Poole Town are away at Football League side Brentford should they overcome Staines Town in tonight’s
replay, St Albans City are at home to Mansfield Town and finally, the winner of tonight’s replay between Sutton United and Hemel Hempstead will travel to either Bradford PA or Kidderminster Harriers. A massive achievement by each individual club to reach this stage in the national competition and fantastic for the Calor League to have so many clubs still flying the League’s banner and having the luxury of definitely having at least one team going through. And they say the magic of the Cup is dead? Hopefully The Steelmen will have taken their eye off the ball once the whistle goes and will still be dreaming of Cup success this evening. That’s the thing with football, nothing is certain and sometimes Cup form isn’t taken into league games. Thursday evening saw The Under 18’s steady the ship a little after a couple of poor results in their recent games with a spirited and hard fought 1-1 draw with League leaders Deeping Rangers. It was also great to see some of our Apprentices involved too, hopefully a sign of things to come in our remaining league games. Don’t forget, if you can’t make it up to Matlock Town on Saturday to cheer on the Lads in our FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round tie, then please come up to the Cozy Stadium where St Neots Town Youth and Saints Under 21’s host Potton United, in what should be a cracking game as the visitors look to avenge their loss at the Hollow earlier this season. Ok, on with the action. Let’s get behind the team and hopefully cheer them on to three very valuable points.

Brazil 4 italy 1 #08 GREATEST FOOTBALL MATCHES EVER PLAYED! Voted for by over 1,000 supporters. Each programme we will run from 10 right down to the greatest ever football match played.
World Cup Final, Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, June 21, 1970 The first World Cup final between two previous winners produced one of the greatest displays of attacking football ever seen on the world stage. As the match report in the July 1970 edition of World Soccer declared: “Here was proof that football, played the way it was meant to be, with artistry and skill, can still succeed in the modern era.” Brazil started as strong favourites, with Pele their outstanding protagonist. For Pele, the game proved to be the fulfilment of all the promise he had shown as a 17-year-old at the World Cup in Sweden 12 years earlier. Against Italy, he opened the scoring with a magnificent header and created two more goals. For all Brazil’s brilliance, Italy never looked out of their depth. In Sandro Mazzola they had a marvellous inside-forward with a clever understanding with Roberto Boninsegna. The latter equalised eight minutes before half-time after he was gifted the ball from a back-heel by Clodoaldo. However, Italy’s addiction to catenaccio was to prove too strong and they made the crucial
mistake of letting the Brazilians come at them. Gerson hit a powerful, low, left-footed crossshot from outside the area to make it 2-1 midway through the second half.
Line-ups
Then Jairzinho accepted Pele’s lay-off to score the third and achieve the feat of having scored in every round of the tournament. Captain Carlos Alberto hammered home the famous fourth, again after a Pele lay-off, before lifting the Jules Rimet trophy, which was Brazil’s to keep after a third World Cup victory.
Goals: Pele 18, Gerson 66, Jairzinho 71, Carlos Alberto 87.
Brazil: Felix - Carlos Alberto, Brito, Piazza, Everaldo Clodoaldo, Gerson, Rivelino Jairzinho, Tostao, Pele.
Italy: Albertosi - Burgnich, Cera, Rosato, Facchetti - Bertini (Juliano 75), Mazzola, De Sisti Domenghini, Boninsegna (Rivera 84), Riva. Goals: Boninsegna 37. Referee: Glockner (East Germany). Att: 108,000.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST
16
Ryan Giggs Full name: Ryan Joseph Giggs OBE Date of birth: 29/11/1973 Where to start with Ryan Giggs, the Welsh Wizard? The first image that will come into anyone’s mind would no doubt be that goal against Arsenal. Without doubt one of the best solo goals ever witnessed in football, and certainly one that will live long in the memory of any United fan. Boy Wonder Ryan Joseph Giggs was in fact born Ryan Joseph Wilson. His father, Danny Wilson, was a noted rugby league player. He later changed his surname to Giggs, after his mother Lynne. He was born in Cardiff, although he was brought up in Pendlebury, thus explaining his Mancunian accent. Having starred as captain of England Schoolboys, he made his Wales debut at the tender age of 17, becoming the youngest player to represent his country at the highest level. He was appointed captain of Wales in 2004. Life Before United Believe it or not, Giggs started out across Manchester at bitter rivals City, playing there until the age of 14, when Alex Ferguson took advantage of City’s surprising unwillingness to sign him up. After starting out as a junior at Deans Sports F.C. in Swinton, and being spotted at 14 by City, United boss Alex Ferguson personally went to his house to urge him to sign for United. After waiving Youth Training Scheme forms with the opportunity to turn professional in three years, Ferguson persuaded him to join the Red Devils. Instant Success After making a brief debut at home to Everton in March 1991, he instantly made a name for himself in his first start, scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Manchester City at Old
Trafford. This set the tone for what was to be a magnificent career. Giggs won his first major silverware in 1992, when United won the League Cup. After Alan Hansen famously declared “You don’t win anything with kids”, Giggs then helped “Fergie’s Fledglings” to their first Premier League triumph in 1993. He then became the first player to collect the PFA Young Player of the Year award in consecutive years (‘92 and ‘93), before United did their first League and Cup double in ‘94. The most avid United fans will remember Giggs’ two stunning goals at Tottenham Hotspurs in ’93 and at Queens Park Rangers in ‘94. By the time United had done the ‘Double double’ in ‘96 and then ‘97, Giggs had become a household name in the world of football, and was helping the Red Devils turn the screw on the European stage. Likened to the late George Best for his awesome balance and speed with ball at feet, and devastating finishing, Giggs holds the record of top goalscorer for a nonstriker. Playing alongside “Fergie’s Fledglings” – Messrs Beckham, Butt, Scholes and the Neville brothers – and other stars like Andy Cole,
Dwight Yorke and Peter Schmeichel, United became an irresistible force in domestic and European football, slowly moving towards “the promised land” as Clive Tyldesley labelled it. That Goal, That Game Before the last-day drama of the 1998-99 Premier League season, which United won, Giggs scored possibly the best solo goal in football history, to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi-Final Replay. After Patrick Vieira gave the ball away on the halfway line, Giggs took the ball past five Arsenal players, before smashing the ball into the roof of the net past David Seaman. He then came up with one of the most memorable celebrations by taking his shirt off and waving his shirt round above his head, amid scenes of madness at Villa Park. The Future the Welsh wizard, is soon to reach the sunset of a fantastic career, but United fans all across the globe hope he continues for many years to come. Although he is revered all over the world, defenders and fans of other clubs alike will be praying for his retirement!
Career Appearances: 766 (One Club) International Caps: 64 Goals: 157 Career Highlight: Awarded an OBE in 2007
CHAIRMAN’S VIEWS All the latest news at www.stneotstownfc.co.uk
Mixed Fortunes Mike Kearns Welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Corby Town for tonight’s fixture in the Calor southern league premier division. Firstly many congratulations to all at Corby for reaching the first round proper of the FA cup. Its great for our league and the region as Corby are not that far away from us.
There could be many discussions on just why we are twelve games into the season and sign all of those new players, and I really do not want to go into them but suffice to say it has been a consistent struggle to get the right players at the right time. No Coincidence Of course as I have mentioned before the FA Cup has a big part to play on player’s availability and it is no coincidence that in many of our signings the FA Cup has played a big part.
Time Needed It will take time for our new players to gel and thankfully we still have some 90 points to play for this season. I really believe that we will have no problem in consolidating our position in this league by the end of the season, and then push on further up the league next season. I do not think that Iain and Gary are done yet on signing players and I know of two players they are close to signing of which will give us more options in certain positions.
I really believe that we will have no problem in consolidating our position in this league by the end of the season, and then push on further up the league next season. At the time of writing we do not know the result of the Hemel FA Cup replay and if Hemel win then our next home game against them will have to be postponed because they will be playing in the next round of the FA Cup.
Welcome Lewis Welcome to our more recent signing Lewis Wilson and congratulations on your first goal for the club. Is that the fastest debut goal scored by a saints player no doubt John Walker will let us know on that one.
Cup Distraction Next Saturday gives us a chance to forget about our league programme when we visit Matlock Town in the FA Trophy. Hopefully we can get a result from that match and look forward to a cup draw the following Monday.
Right onto tonight’s match and lets all get behind the team from the off and help them settle down and play the football we all know they are capable of.

A loss against what I think is the best team in our league being Chesham was followed by a good performance away to Bideford. Even though we lost by the odd goal in five we can see a vast improvement in our game.

Welcome to our visitors this evening for our next engagement in the Calor Southern League Premier Division.. They are the players, Directors and supporters of Corby Town FC and we extend to them our usual warm Cozy Stadium welcome. This is Corby’s first season back at Step Three after four seasons in the Conference North and despite starting the season as one of the favourites for promotion they have not found the going easy. Currently 13th in the Premier Division they are yet to win a league match away from home this season having drawn at Arlesey and Bideford but they are one of only two teams to have beaten second in the table

Chesham United. Like us they lost three points already gained following the sad demise of Hinckley United. Supporters with a long memory may remember Corby’s last visit to St Neots (at Shortsands) in 1976. It was for a Second Qualifying Round FA Cup match when our lads won 3-0 with two goals from Tony Hall and the third from Steve Young.
Club History During the 1930s Corby was represented in the United Counties League by steelworks side Stewarts
& Lloyds. But by the 1948 it was decided that the expanding town could support an independent football club and Corby Town was formed. Their nickname of the Steelmen derives from the link with Stewarts & Lloyds. Corby Town played their first game in August 1948 at Occupation Road, which was to be their home until 1985. They won the United Counties League championship in both 1950–51 and 1951–52, and these successes prompted a step up the Midland Football League in 1952. The Steelmen spent five

record gate at the Triangle was set in a pre-season game with Rangers with 2,300 supporters present. The record at Occupation Road was 10,239 against Peterborough United. In May 2012, manager Graham Drury left the club, after the board decided not to offer him a new contract. He was replaced by former Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson a few weeks later. However after five straight defeats at the start of the 2012-13 season Ian Sampson resigned as manager and former QPR and Peterborough United defender Chris Plummer took charge. However, after four seasons in the Conference North, they were relegated on the final day of the season. Just two games into the 2013/14 season Chris Plummer resigned as manager of Corby Town, following defeats to Hemel Hempstead Town (6-0) and Burnham (3-0). Plummer’s assistant Mark Peters was placed in interim charge of the first team on August 21, 2013. Despite Peters steadying the ship with 3 wins and a draw from his 5 games in charge on the 9th September Chairman Kevin Ingram made the surprise announcement that a managerial duo, Andrew Wilson and Tommy Wright, would take charge of the Steelmen. They made a dream start to life at Steel Park with a 3-0 home win over Barwell in the FA Cup.

Following a tough year back in the Premier Division the club was saved from relegation by Farnborough Town’s demise from the Conference South. 2007–08 looked really positive for The Steelmen, however the side assembled by Kevin Wilson vastly underachieved and following his sacking by the club and an influx of new players by new manager Graham Drury, The Steelmen avoided relegation with just one week of the season remaining. Following a number of new signings and complete team restructuring the Steelmen, promotion to the Conference North was achieved on 25 April 2009, at the Rockingham Triangle in front of a strong crowd of 1,990. The Steelmen were relegated again in 1990 – by which time they had moved to a new home at the multi-purpose Rockingham Triangle sports complex and for the remainder of the 90s the club struggled to stay in the Southern League.Since 2002, however, the club’s fortunes have turned around, culminating in a return to the Southern League Premier Division in 2006.
Steel Park includes a mainstand which was erected with room for 577 spectators. With supporters also able to stand on the terrace behind the goal and around the perimeter of the pitch, the official capacity of the stadium is 3,893.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME
34
Changing Fortunes Ade Roberts As fans, our ultimate dream is to watch our team play at the very highest level, win the FA Cup in style and play in the Champions League against top class European sides. This, for most of us, is as likely as hell freezing over. We have to be realistic though and understand that money does the talking in football. You only have to look at the Football League and the Skrill Premier League to see how fortunes change for clubs. At the same time, why couldn’t or shouldn’t it happen for us too. You look at clubs like Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town and ask yourself where they were just a decade ago? In contrast to that, look at Wrexham, Grimsby Town and Luton Town, clubs who were once playing at a much higher level in the football pyramid and in the football league but now ploy their trade in the Skrill Conference. It’s amazing how the fortunes of clubs can change so quickly and from this, we must remain optimistic that our fortunes could change in the near future. Obviously, an injection of money has played a part in the changing fortunes of clubs but this is not always the success story. Take Darlington FC for example, now playing under the new name of Darlington 1883 (the year the original Darlington FC were formed). Darlo moved from their old ground Feethams to the Darlington arena in 2003 after a large cash injection. This move to a 25,000 seater stadium was disastrous as the cost of their new stadium played a major part in their entering into administration in 2004. They went into administration again in 2009 and yet again in 2011 at which point, the fans raised enough cash for the team to compete for that season. Darlington never played at a high level but somebodies unrealistic optimism in thinking they would be
able to compete at a higher level was ultimately their demise. In order for them to continue as a football club, the latest administrators required them to change their name and become a new club. Darlington now play their home games at Bishop Auckland and compete in the Northern Premier Division after being promoted last season. You only have to look at clubs like Swansea City and Wigan Athletic who, just over a decade ago were in the lower leagues of the football league. Both of these clubs have played well in Europe this season and both of these clubs were last seasons’ Cup winners. Swansea won the Capital One Cup and Wigan won the FA Cup. Who would have predicted that at the start of last season, never mind 10-12 years ago??
This should inspire every football fan. Who knows where we’ll be a decade from now? That’s the beauty of the game – it so unpredictable. As Jimmy Greaves said [once or twice], “It’s a funny old game”. We never know what’s just around the corner for us or our respective club. It doesn’t always take a new club owner to with high expectation and a fat wallet to make it happen, although it has helped many clubs. Sometimes, its hard work, determination and a wellbalanced squad who fully understand each other that make it happen. Hopefully, in a decade, we’ll be playing at a much higher level. For now, let’s look no further than the final whistle of this game and the victory we all hope for.

THE NLP
Then it hits you. ‘Hold on, I have absolutely no idea who that is’. Those that witnessed the horrendous acts of violence that ruined last weekend’s FA Cup tie between Atherstone Town and Barrow know all about uninvited and unwelcome guests. Flags burned, punches thrown, women and children screaming with visiting players physically attacked. It stained the day. But it mustn’t taint people’s view of a club.
There was a sense of excitement, too. Attracting new sponsors, and new fans that could be lured back they like what they saw. Sadly, some knuckleheads came along for the ride too. The sensible money would be on this group never having been to the Adders’ Sheepy Road before. A similar tale whenever a smaller club makes the headlines for the wrong reason. It’s a problem we’ve seen so many times before. Idiots like attaching themselves to big days, taking the opportunity to cause chaos and run a mock in a competition where they know they can get people talking about them.
In short, attention seeking at its finest. Atherstone chairman Robert Weale was close to tears in the aftermath, fearing the mark these mindless troublemakers will leave on his precious club and its reputation. Mud, as they say, sticks. We can do him and all that have been on the wrong end of such hooliganism a service by remembering that they are victims, too. Don’t judge a club by the pondlife that occasionally inhabit it.

The drinks are flowing and all of a sudden your attention is diverted from picking up wine-soaked shards of glass from behind the TV unit. Someone is acting up, whilst swigging down your dad’s Glenfiddich. And people are starting to get annoyed.
Playing to double figure crowds at best in the Midland Football Combination, this was not your usual Step 5 match. The best part of a thousand people turned up, around nine times their average. It took deep planning from the club’s small committee.

Cirencester Town, who had taken a sixth minute lead from a penalty, twice led by two goals but needed a goal five minutes from time to overcome visitors Wimborne Town 4-3 but Bridgwater Town, two behind at the interval, went down 3-0 at home to Mangotsfield United while Yate Town went behind on the hour mark but equalised five minutes later and secured a 2-1 home win over Thatcham Town with a goal in the final minute and Stratford Town, a goal up at the break, scored three times in the second half to beat Guildford City 4-0 and send the visitors to the bottom of the table replacing Didcot Town who scored in the second half to secure a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Fleet Town. NON-LEAGUE CLUB NEWS
Cambridge City CITY SUBMIT PLANS TO MOVE TO SAWSTON Calor League Southern Premier Division club Cambridge City have submitted a planning application for a proposed moved to Sawston. The application is intended to secure the long-term future of the club including the women’s, boys and disabled teams that are supported by the club. The scheme combines a new stadium with a floodlit grass pitch, a full-sized floodlit 3G pitch for training purposes served by its own stand and on-site parking for cars, coaches and bicycles. It also provides a 3.4ha recreation ground (of which there is currently a shortage in Sawston) with road access, parking and floodlights to be gifted to Sawston Parish Council.

St Neots Town SAINTS IN FOR STRIKER WILSON Calor League Southern Premier Division club St Neots Town have announced the signing of striker Lewis Wilson. Wilson was given a professional contract at Northampton Town where he was loaned out to Kettering Town in 2012, playing fifteen games for the Poppies and scoring an impressive eleven goals. He moved on to Skrill South side Whitehawk this season where he found it very difficult to settle in because of the travelling involved. Saints boss Iain Parr said: “Signing Lewis has been an exhausting process this week, but we have got our man, despite late interest from a host of other clubs.”

Chairman Clive Robbins insisted Calor League Southern Premier Division club Poole Town were relishing the chance to enhance supporters’ matchday enjoyment after getting the green light for a Tatnam revamp. The Dolphins last month gained planning permission for a new north stand, club room, set of turnstiles and toilet block at their base in School Lane. Poole, who have secured funding from the Football Foundation to help with up to half of the estimated £300,000 cost, have until March 31st to achieve a C grade for their ground from the Football Association. And having been prevented from starting work on the new facilities while landlord Poole Borough Council considered the necessary changes to the club’s tenancy, the Dolphins can now press on with the improvements after being given the go-ahead, subject to conditions.
