Sixteen Soldiers Gary King Good Afternoon Everybody and welcome to our opponents today Frome Town FC. Since my last notes we have put four points on the table, drawing at home to Bedford and beating Banbury away.

and we have been working as a group on tightening things up in that respect. Going forward Matty, Lewis, Frewy and Jay Davies really brought the game to Banbury, in truth, we could have been 3 or 4 up at half time and aswell as that we should have had another clear cut penalty for what was a blatant hand ball. Banbury became more frustrated within the game as time went on and had their centre half sent off midway through the second half for striking out at Matty Nolan, an indication of how frustrated they were at not being allowed to play the game they wanted to. Another great finish from Jay when put through with an intelligent pass by Matty, a goal scored in the first minute which

showed the players were switched on from the start. This week Zema and Nathan have been working very hard on the training field with the squad. Our league position dictates we have to work harder than teams above us and the players are aware of this. I myself went to watch Burnham beat Stourbridge 2-0 this week ahead of our game against them on the 14th. I’m hoping between now and then we can have closed the gap on them aswell as Bedford. The result to Bedford set us up for what was always going to be a tough game away to Banbury. For those of you who weren’t there the pitch was awful. It’s not a place teams would relish visiting. They had been on a great run coming into the game so the first job for the management team was to make sure the players were mentally prepared going into this game. I am pleased to say that on the day we had sixteen soldiers that were first class in how they went about their business. It was our best defensive display in as much that we limited Banbury to very few opportunities. The back five looked strong and assured and were protected in a very disciplined manner by the two Bens, Farrell and Ford. A clean sheet was another big positive; it’s no secret we had been conceding too many goals

The draw at home to Bedford for me was a significant one. On the night we were the dominant side and did create enough chances to win two games, that said, we found ourselves 1-2 down in the 93rd minute but we kept going, kept creating chances and when big Ryan powered home a great header with what was almost the last passage of play we had secured our first draw of the season. A game that could have been lost was not. I felt the timing of the goal would have been very deflating to Bedford who clearly came with the game plan of keeping players behind the ball and I wasn’t surprised to see them lose at home to Bashley four days later.

Deeping has yet to be beaten this season in the league but at Rowley Park they got very close to surrendering their record. St Neots dictated play in the first half and after the hosts had levelled the best move of the second half saw Sean Murray’s fierce volley rebound from a post with the visiting keeper on the wrong side of the goal. However St Neots had to produce some heroic defending late in the match with two goal line clearances so in the final analysis justice seemed to be done with both sides settling for a point apiece. Prior to the match with two key players suspended it looked as though St Neots would have preferred this match on a different date but once the action had begun it was clear that the emerging St Neots line-up fears no-one as they showed little or no respect for their visitors’ reputation. It was a match with a great deal of effort and action yet neither keeper had a serious save to make. Deeping was sluggish at the start probably because of St Neots enthusiastic approach to the match. Wes Byrne almost scored from an impossibly narrow angle after chasing a loose ball but St Neots did take the lead after 17 minutes when Ashley Deverall crossed for Scott Grant to score his first goal for the club with a well placed header. Craig Reynolds then shot narrowly over the bar and Byrne once again tested visiting keeper Danny Bircham from a narrow angle. It was all St Neots in terms of attacking play but nine minutes before the break a close range shot by Michael Stevenson was deflected for a corner and when Ben Singleton’s clearing header had too little length the unmarked David Cobb volleyed home from 25 yards giving keeper Ryan Hunt no chance. Deeping must have been relieved to

be level at the break for the goal had been their only real scoring chance. St Neots also began the second period confidently. Sean Murray looking sharp after his injury flicked a neat pass to Joe Jordan whose shot was blocked and then Jordan returned the compliment but Murray’s shot was too high. He was then desperately unlucky not to give St Neots the lead when his close range header from a whipped low cross by Jordan rebounded from the inside of a goalpost. Deeping rejuvenated their performance with two substitutions sending on John Stead and Scott Woods and pushing players forward and in the last ten minutes the balance of play shifted. Now St Neots had to defend well to repress their visitors attack and in one hectic attack three minutes from time both Scott Grant and Ashley Deverall cleared off the goal line. That seemed appropriate for it was a match that St Neots had not deserved to lose. Ryan has therefore has joined Soham on a dual registration and will use the experience to play regular football at a higher level. Ryan is an exceptional player who has a great future at St Neots Town FC, but at this present moment in time with the first team being in the

Our brilliant under 21s have won 4 and drawn 1 of their 5 games in November. Well done to Steve and of course Gary and the team for this great achievement in their first season at that level. The team are currently fourth in the table.

St Neots will feel hard done by because they had twice come from behind only to lose to a goal scored a minute into added time. Once again the St Neots side was decimated by injuries and non-availabilities and were only able to name one substitute on the night. Chatteris were full of ideas and commitment and probably deserved their victory even though they were lucky to snatch their winner at the death whist St Neots found it difficult to adapt to a bumpy pitch and the foggy conditions. The match got off to a scrappy start with much of the play in midfield and neither keeper had a shot to save until the tenth minute when Chatteris took the lead with their first significant attack. Both keepers then made a save each but after 20 minutes St Neots drew level as Jordan Brown was brought down in the area by Liam Birch and Sam Williams calmly tucked away the spot kick. The second half developed into a rather bad tempered affair with three players from each side being booked by the Referee. Chatteris was creating the better chances and Dan Huff twice saved well from Revell – the second time bravely at his feet. St Neots might have taken the lead after 68 minutes when skilful play by Brown set up Rukky and his shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by Henry Shepherd. The last ten minutes produced all the noteworthy second half action and the goals that gave the result. After 83 minutes Chatteris set up a barrage of attacks that resulted in three consecutive corner kicks and from the third Josh Brittan netted from 10 yards to put Chatteris ahead again. Right on the end of normal time Rukky broke through and saw his first shot blocked but followed up to level the scores at 2-2 but within a minute on the break Asa Revell snatched the dramatic winning goal.

This was a match that neither side could afford to lose but it came mighty close to St Neots being the fall guys once again. They almost totally dominated possession throughout, played all the football and created all the chances yet had to be indebted to a late goal three minutes into added time to claim their valuable point. Normally when a side scores so late they can be said to have stolen a point but this match was so one way it was the visitors who did the stealing. Bedford managed no more than three or four direct shots at goal in the ninety minutes yet led twice and will have been gutted to concede so late after spending the last fifteen minutes with almost all their players in defensive positions. If their game plan had been not to lose the match then they played exactly to the script but to St Neots great credit they were not prepared to give up their fight until that final whistle sounded. With Ed Adjei still nursing his knee injury it gave Manager Gary King the chance to give recent loan signing Michael Frew his first start and he also kept Matt Nolan in the side forfeiting a midfield player to operate a 4-4-2 formation from the start. After skipper Gavin Hoyte had headed narrowly wide from a Lewis Hilliard corner it was Jake Woolley who was twice close to scoring seeing visiting keeper Dan Green save his shot well and then picking up a lengthy Nathan Abbey clearance to see a second effort

blocked bravely by the keeper. Jay Davies had a rising shot well saved and as the one way traffic continued Woolley had a shot pushed for a corner and from another Hilliard corner Hoyte had another close range header saved. By now with half an hour gone St Neots could have been three or four goals to the good but disaster struck as Hilliard was dispossessed in midfield by Lorenzo Ferrari who ran strongly forward to see his first shot blocked but he followed in to score with the rebound – Bedford’s first genuine scoring chance. St Neots refused to panic and resumed their search for a goal with Michael Frew prominent. He crossed from the right for Matt Nolan to see his effort deflect wide off a defender and then he cut in to see his shot also deflected the wrong side of a post. Then on the stroke of half time he found the head of Nolan once again and this time his perfectly placed headed effort produced the save of the match from the overworked Green. The second half began as the first had ended with Brett Langdon marauding down the right flank to pick out Hilliard and his shot was cleared off the line by Zac Stephens. St Neots decided to vary their approach pushing Frew into a central attacking role with Ben Ford coming on for Jake Woolley. Bedford

seemed unable to break out of their own half as Green did well to push a deflected Hilliard free kick for a corner after 64 minutes but then in the space of a further two minutes St Neots squandered two simple chances – Dave Deeney firing wildly over the bar and Hilliard played clear by Davies trying to chip Green but only succeeding in clearing the crossbar when he should have scored. Ryan Frater had a header from a corner cleared off the line with the keeper stranded but after 75 minutes Jay Davies produced a stunning 20 yards volley to level the scores. However parity only lasted five minutes and then Bedford broke away for Curtis Shaw to beat Abbey at his near post with a soft goal to put Bedford back in front. Substitute Lewis Wilson then hit the bar for St Neots and just when all seemed lost three minutes into added time Ryan Frater powered in a close range header from another Hilliard corner to ensure St Neots first share of the points this season and their first home league draw since 9th March.

Ironically the only goal of the match cam e after just ninety seconds as Matt Nolan with his back to goal skilfully flicked the ball over the last defender and Jay Davies sprinted through to send a delicate chip over the advancing Leigh Bedwell to give St Neots the perfect start. It took Davies’ goals tally this season to seven – more than doubling his tally last season when he scored three. St Neots were boosted by this start

and in the next twenty minutes they played some attractive free flowing football with Hoyte heading into the side netting from a corner and Michael Frew seeing his shot from Ben Ford’s corner clear off the line by Tom Ryan with his keeper beaten. St Neots were then denied what looked a certain penalty when a defender handled in the area but the Referee looked unsighted and the chance was lost. Lewis Hilliard then went past two defenders after 33 minutes but his shot was blocked by the keeper’s legs and a four minutes later Matt Nolan lobbed a shot from 25 yards that was pushed away one handed at full stretch by Bedwell. Banbury probably had their share of possession in the first half but created little principally because of Hoyte’s defensive dominance and their best effort came from a move involving Luke Cray and Dom Lawless but Scott Bridges low shot was comfortably gathered by Nathan Abbey. An early effort by Lawless for the home side sailed well over the bar and on the hour Banbury was reduced to ten men when Wayne Blossom was dismissed for the illegal use of an elbow on Nolan. That should have signalled to St Neots an opportunity to push home their

numerical advantage but the home side regrouped and kept players behind the ball restricting St Neots opportunities. Nolan had a shot blocked by Ryan after 64 minutes and six minutes later Hilliard lobbed over the bar after good work by Ben Farrell before St Neots tried to vary their approach with Jake Woolley on for the tiring Frew. Bedwell made a brave save at the feet of Nolan after good work by Dave Deeney with a quarter of an hour left but the only time St Neots looked defensively vulnerable was after 81 minutes when Anderson Pinto was left unmarked at the far post following a corner but he blazed over the bar. As the game drew to a close St Neots looked comfortable playing the ball around and keeping possession and this effectively make Banbury become frustrated and less threatening. In the last ten minutes St Neots sent on two more substitutes with fresher legs and they played out time without ever looking likely to concede an equaliser.

Add to that Jay Davies’ fourth goal in as many games and midfielder Ben Farrell becoming the fortieth player to feature in a St Neots match this season. St Neots moved to within a point of Bedford Town just above them in the table with a confident show and the closeness of the final score line hardly does justice to the performance on the day. It was match that featured St Neots’ best defensive performance of the season with skipper Gavin Hoyte and Ryan Frater winning every aerial battle and goalkeeper Nathan Abbey hardly ever bothered. With shots blocked on the line and at least two good shouts for penalties turned down St Neots perhaps should have won the game by a larger margin but the three valuable points could mark a turning point in the fortunes of the side.

GREENIES GREETINGS

Off To The Dream Start Mike Green Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to a very chilly Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, for today’s Calor League Premier Division game.

Once again, another great display both on and off pitch, yet another example of our ‘all for one, one for all’ motto. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of today’s visitors, Frome Town and we hope you have an enjoyable, if brief, stay with us before making a safe return to Somerset later this evening. Two games played and four points gained in the process as our climb up the table seems to be gathering pace. Our last home game, played last Tuesday, saw us draw 2-2 with near neighbours Bedford Town in what turned out to be quite a thrilling encounter. After going behind in the first period, a quite sublime strike from in-form Jay Davies looked to have salvaged at least a point from

a game which we were to dominate, however, The Eagles were to regain the lead in somewhat fortunate circumstances and it looked like the points would quite unbelievably be heading over the County border to the New Eyrie but step forward new centre-half Ryan Frater, who was about to crash home an injury time headed equaliser from the last of a number of corners we had earned as the lads looked to get something from a game which really should have been all over by the break. Saturday saw us head over to Oxfordshire and a tricky looking match at Banbury United who were enjoying a five match unbeaten run.

We got off to the dream start with man-of-the-moment Jay Davies putting us 1-0 up within ninety seconds with an exquisite lob over the keeper from the edge of the box after a clever through ball from Matty Nolan. The remaining eighty-eight and a half minutes went totally to plan, apart from Dave Deeney breaking his nose in an unfortunate incident, with us defending properly and creating a good amount of chances to increase our lead and were it not for an inspired display from their keeper, we would have gone on to win by an even bigger margin. Once again, we were cheered on by fantastic vocal support from the Rabble, who included a certain member who we shall call Big Rich to protect his identity, who was feeling and looking a little less than tip top after attending his company Christmas do on Friday evening. Once again, another great display both on and off pitch, yet another example of our ‘all for one, one for all’ motto. Our under 18’s have been in action during the past two weeks with one win and a defeat to show for their efforts. Firstly, a local derby win over Huntingdon Town here at Rowley Park, winning 3-2 and more recently, a defeat by the same score over at a rapidly improving Chatteris Town. Saturday 21st December sees us hold a Family Day as we entertain AFC Totten. Details of events and offers on the day will be released shortly so keep checking the Website/facebook/twitter for further info. Ok, onto today’s game and let’s get behind the lads from the off. European Cup Final, Hampden Park, Glasgow, May 18, 1960 Real Madrid’s demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt is the most famous final in the history of the European Cup; the match that opened people’s eyes to the wider European game.

When Erwin Stein scored for Eintracht, Di Stefano responded immediately, taking a pass from Puskas and racing away to beat keeper Egon Loy for his hat-trick.

The victory in Glasgow secured a fifth successive trophy for Madrid – still a record – and ensured the club’s place in football’s hall of fame.

Stein and Eintracht, for what it was worth, had the last word, taking advantage of a careless back-pass to score a third for the Germans. But it was a night to remember for Madrid and, in particular, the magisterial Di Stefano and the indefatigable Puskas.

The crowd of 134,000, a record for a European final, included Alex Ferguson, then an 18-yearold amateur centre-forward with Queen’s Park. They were treated to a wonderful exhibition of football from Madrid and the inspirational Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas. Today, the match makes for strange viewing, considering the space in which the players had time to work. But the flow of goals is still breathtaking. Di Stefano and Puskas were at the peak of their powers. The pair combined brilliantly, with Puskas scoring a then-record 12 goals in the season’s competition. They were superbly supported by Francisco Gento, Jose Santamaria and hard-working inside-right Luis Del Sol. Eintracht were not a poor team by any stretch of the

imagination. They had put 12 goals past Scottish champions Rangers in the semi-finals and even opened the scoring in the final. But the goal, by Richard Kress, only served to spur Madrid on. A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Sir Bobby Charlton The culmination of his club career came in 1968, when Charlton and United went on to win the European Cup that had destroyed the Busby Babes. In 1969 he was awarded the OBE and in 1970, after earning his 100th cap for England, he was selected for the World Cup squad, where he played his last game for the national side. Sadly, Charlton’s later years at club level were marred by long-running feuds with his United teammates. Finally, he retired in 1973.

Full name: Sir Bobby Charlton CBE Date of birth: 11/10/1937 Bobby Charlton was perhaps the most famous Englishman of his age. He survived the Munich Air Disaster of 1958 to become the most recognizable face of legendary Manchester United and England squads, including the England team that won the World Cup in 1966. Now knighted, Sir Bobby Charlton remains known today as a technically superb player and a true gentleman. Robert Charlton was born in Ashington, Northumberland in 1937. His four uncles Stan, Jack, George and Jimmy, his mother’s cousin, Jackie Milburn, and his brother Jack were all professional football players, so it was little surprise that Bobby became a footballer himself. He was scouted and played for England schoolboys and Manchester United’s youth team at the age of 15, and played his first match for the senior team in 1956, after spells training as an engineer and doing National Service in nearby Shrewsbury. Charlton joined a rolling squad known as the Busby Babes, on account of their being an unusually youthful and prodigiously talented squad under legendary manager Matt Busby. However, in 1958, after two seasons securing his position in the team, Charlton’s life was to be dramatically affected by the events succeeding a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade. On February 6, the team was due to fly back from Munich in order to reach England in time to fulfill their league games. The weather was horrendous and the plane had difficulty taking off, but after a number of checks were carried out, the team got back on board. The plane had barely taken off when the wing and tail caught fire after hitting some obstacles on

the ascent, and it crash-landed. 23 of the 44 footballers, journalists and crew members on board were killed, including Tommy Taylor and David Pegg, with whom Charlton and his team mate Dennis Viollet had swapped seats. Charlton suffered cuts to his head and severe shock. He was the first to leave hospital and became, at the age of 20, something of a veteran of United’s decimated team. Unsurprisingly, United failed to do very well that season, but Busby built up another team with new players including George Best, with Charlton a stalwart. The psychological repercussions were harder to gauge and repair, and the crash remains one of the defining events of Charlton’s life according to the man himself. However, his career continued to flourish and Bobby would eventually join his brother Jack in England’s squad for the 1966 World Cup, reaching and competing in the final against West Germany. Although neither Charlton scored, England won 4-2 in the tense, uneven match, and Bobby had taken part in English football’s greatest triumph to date.

Charlton met his wife Norma at a dry cleaners in Manchester and they married in 1961. They have two daughters, Suzanne and Andrea. He has avoided the controversial love life that dogged many footballers of his generation, but tabloids speculated instead on cracks in his relationship with his brother Jack. Bobby has admitted that their relationship is strained, citing the conflict between his loyalties to his wife and his mother as key. Like many footballers, Charlton has become something of a polymath in his retirement. Initially taking semi-retirement as a player-manager at Preston, he went on to manage Wigan Athletic. However, today’s football fans recognize him largely as a sometime BBC pundit and as a member of Manchester United’s board of directors. He has also made money from advertising, from international footballing schools and DVDs and other enterprises. Bobby Charlton was awarded the CBE in 1973 and was knighted in 1994. He continues to be an active member of the footballing community on a number of boards, helping promote sport at home and abroad, and as a commentator figure in the media.

We’re Getting There Mike Kearns Welcome to the Officials, Players and supporters of Frome Town for todays fixture. I hope you enjoy your day with us. I certainly remember last seasons home encounter with Frome who took the lead in about the forth Minute and kept that score line for the rest of the game.

Then onto The Banbury game, of which I like many others listened to the match live via Radio Horton, Yes live in Florida. It wasn’t so much ballby-ball commentary but they did their best and we ran our what sounded like a very good victory with us hardly being put under pressure.

On the other hand the Banbury managers interview was one of serious sour grapes; anyone would think we were playing Barcelona and not Banbury on one of the worst pitches in the league. Some of his comments about how good or bad a team we were and the comments about our management team and players were, well quite disrespectful.

I then had the good news that Bedford lost to bottom club Bashley and we moved to just a single point below Bedford. As I have always said this really is a strange league and on there day anyone can beat anyone. I have always believed that we will finish the season about half way and that is still my belief. Gary, Zema and Nathan and the team will very soon settle our nerves and get us clear of any relegation place I am sure of that. Relegation contenders is not a word I like and it really hit home with the Banbury manager saying his club should really win against a team like St Neots at the bottom of the division with just one away win all season which was against the bottom club. He was right of course but I did not like that, what I do like is being Champions or gain promotion from the play offs that sounds much better.

The management team are already looking to build a team to challenge next season and they have my and the clubs full backing to mount a serious challenge next season. I, like all that are connected with the club have not really enjoyed our Calor league season thus so far. As I have said before our season starts now and lets see what we can achieve for the rest of the season. We are not going to win the league or gain promotion this season. That I would like to think might be next season. But there is one club we will defiantly be above next season, we played them last Saturday. We will carry on trying to sign more quality players that the management might think they need for this and next season so get behind the lads today the team is taking shape and looking good for the rest of the season.

I also listened to the after match interviews from both managers and Gary’s interview was one of hard luck to the other side, but we had a game plan and knew what we had to do to win on a very difficult pitch.

I doubt if Gary will need any team talk when we play Banbury at home in the return fixture.

The Bedford match was I believe one we should have won by a country mile. Being given a match commentary via messaging and twitter it did seem to be one of those games. The day after the match I received the full video of the game from Adam (Thanks Adam you’re a real star) and after watching it I could not believe how we did not run out easy winners. Still that’s football and we were all a little disappointed with the result but pleased by the shift the team had put in.

Welcome to our visitors this afternoon for our next engagement in the Calor Southern League Premier Division. They are the players, Directors and supporters of Frome Town and we extend to them our usual warm Cozy Stadium welcome. Despite their dismal home form they seem to enjoy their days on the road because to date this season they have five victories, one draw and only two defeats away from the Aldersmith Stadium. One defeat came at Weymouth and the other recently at Redditch whilst they have recorded victories at Totton, Arlesey, Banbury, Hitchin and Truro. One player likely to be in our line up today who will be relishing the game is full back Arthur Lee who scored his only

away goal for the club at Frome last season. Last season Frome finished eighteenth in the table three points above the relegation zone - six places below their 2011/12 finish but if they maintain their current form especially away from home – they could be looking to emulate that finish of two seasons ago. Our lads of course are currently struggling to find consistency but with two wins and a draw in our last five appearances at the Cozy Stadium and fourteen goals scored in those five matches they appear to be moving in the right direction.

Early success came in the form of three Somerset Senior League Championships in between 1906 and 1911, whilst in between the Wiltshire League Championship was won in 1909-10.The Club reached the Fifth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in 1911-12 under the old format of the competition, which was today’s equivalent of the Third Round proper. Frome have always played at Badgers Hill and the ground held its biggest gate in 1954 when 8,000 spectators saw Leyton Orient win 3-0 in the FA Cup First Round Proper. In the same season promotion was won to Division One of the Western League & was beaten finalists in the inaugural Western League Cup. Promotion was gained back into the Western League after a spell in the Wiltshire League again in 1962-63 where the club remained for some years.

Another vintage year followed in 1982-83 with victories in both the Somerset FA Premier Cup and the Western League Cup, plus runnersup in the league. The next trophy to follow was the 1983-84 Western Counties Floodlit Cup & in 1984-85 the Club reached the second round proper of the FA Challenge Trophy.

Frome won promotion back to the Western League Premier Division after a six year absence the following year & also reached the final of the league cup. The 2004-05 season saw the Club celebrate their centenary and events on the field saw the Robins reach the Quarter- Finals of the FA Vase before eventually losing 3-0 at Jarrow Roofing. In 2008-09 secured promotion into the Southern League for the first time in the Clubs history. The Somerset Premier Cup was also won with a 3-1 win over local rivals Paulton Rovers. After a poor start to life in the Southern League and a quick change of manager Frome went on an incredible unbeaten run and finished the season in sixth place and just three points from a play-off place. Season 2010/11 saw Frome go even further when they beat Sholing 1-0 in the promotion play-off final to secure another promotion as the Robins start another new era in the Southern Premier Division. 2011/12 was another excellent year for Frome as they had a credible mid-table finish in the Premier Division in their first season and were also named as the Somerset FA’s Charter Standard Community Club of the Year.

Success was gained in the Somerset Premier Cup in 1966-67 with victory over Yeovil Town in the final and the cup was shared by the same two teams in 196869. Frome’s greatest triumph came in 1978-79 when the club won the Western League. The Championship was secured by losing only once in the last 32 matches. The League Cup followed in 1979-80.

Following those heady days, Frome flirted all too often with relegation from the Premier Division, and were relegated in 1995-96 and the Club spent several years in the lower reaches of the First Division.

Who calls the shots?... Brian O’Donnell First Team Manager Appointed 1st Team Manager in October 2013, O’Donnell had playing spells at AFC Bournemouth, Bristol Rovers, Torquay United, Yeovil Town, Bath City, Salisbury City and Basingstoke Town, as well as in Australia, during his lengthy career. After retiring, the 56-year-old Scot had coaching roles with Salisbury and Bournemouth, as well as managerial stints at Bournemouth Poppies and Poole Town.

Rhys Baggridge (Fullback) Joined the club in the summer from Salisbury City having spent the last two months of last season on loan at Frome.

Ryan Elliott (Defender) Signed in the summer and formerly with New College (Swindon) and Oxford United.

Kurt Hammonds (Midfielder) Formerly with Swindon Town until injury curtailed his professional career. Also played for Warminster Town. Aaron Ledgister (Midfielder) Former professional with Cheltenham Town and played for several club in non-league football and this is his second spell with Frome having re-joined in late August.

Sugar And Spice Ade Roberts Ron Atkinson once said, “Women should be in the kitchen, the discotheque and the boutique, but not in football”, no wonder he lasted just a few days in Celebrity Big Brother! I disagree with Ron, as will the majority of you [hopefully?] Ladies football is enormous nowadays compared to when it was in its early days. Just to put that into some kind of perspective, when Great Britain ladies played Canada ladies back in 1995 the attendance at the game was just 665. More recently, during the Olympics at Coventry City’s ‘old ground’, the Ricoh Arena, when the two teams (Team GB and Canada) met again the attendance for this game was 28,828. Sadly, this was to be the last game in 2012 Olympics for the GB ladies as they were well beaten by the Canadians in a great game. The ladies game now makes for pleasurable viewing and if we’re honest, some of these girls wouldn’t look out of place in our starting 11 for today’s game! Well, they may look out of place amongst the fellas but they could do the job as well as their male counterparts without a doubt. What does Ron Atkinson know anyway? Probably about as much about the modern game as Rowan Atkinson no doubt! Prior to the final game at Coventry, Team GB had beaten Brazil ladies at Wembley Stadium in front of 70,584 face-painted, flag waving fans. Admittedly, not all in attendance that night were your regular football supporters. A large number of them were there to be part of the Olympic games on home soil. As you and I know all so well, once you get the football ‘bug’, you get it ‘good and proper’ and you’re hooked almost instantly for the rest of your days. Who knows how many of those at Wembley that night will take to watching their local side, whether it

The Olympics of last year could well have created a renewed vigour in some for the beautiful game. We know attendances have dwindled for almost every club in the country over the years, especially during the tough economic times we’re experiencing currently but who knows, we may see new faces within the ground this season. Recent research shows that almost a third of attendees at football matches are female fans. And why shouldn’t they be here Mr Atkinson you football philistine?? (Ron, not Rowan) Women have a place in football, whether it’s in the stands, officiating the game on the field of play or in the boardroom making the big decisions. A survey a couple of years ago stated that over 26 Million females worldwide play the

game of football. Who would have thought that it would become so popular amongst the ladies? Back in the Victorian days a lady called Nettie Honeyball arranged a football match between the North and South ladies to show that women were ‘not the ornamental and useless creatures that men have pictured’. She probably meant the likes of Ron Atkinson; he was around then wasn’t he? Would you believe that doctors back then were also encouraged to tell female patients that football could harm the delicate female physique and possibly render the player infertile! A Canine Quandary “There was an explosion of green,” said David O’Leary, remembering the reaction to his winning penalty for the Republic of Ireland against Romania at the 1990 World Cup. It put them through to the quarterfinals, where they would meet Italy. “The biggest mistake was standing still. I nearly got killed by all my teammates.” Only one of them might have meant to do any harm: the substitute Bernie Slaven, who had spent the whole of the tournament on the bench. “I basically trained for six weeks with a group of fringe players,” Slaven told the Glasgow Evening Times in 2003. He was pleased to be there, but didn’t hold out much hope of playing. “We called ourselves the Muppets.” By the time Ireland reached the knockout stages, Slaven had had enough. He wanted to get home to

his dogs. “I became a figure of fun when I called home on that trip,” he recalled. “While others were speaking to their wives, I would go on the phone and say: ‘Put the dog on.” The Middlesbrough forward was taking his dog for a walk when he found out he’d been called up to Ireland’s World Cup squad, and once left Ayresome Park at half-time to take the dog out, after being substituted. “I could see the floodlights and hear the crowd from where I was walking, which was surreal,” he said. Not quite as surreal as the picture that Tony Cascarino, Slaven’s World Cup room-mate, paints in his autobiography. “I’d be sitting in the bed alongside and Bernie would be howling like Lassie into the phone: ‘Woof, woof, aru, aru, woof!’ He’d be kissing the receiver and lavishing affection – ‘Hello, lovey dovey’ – on a dog! The

first time it happened, I nearly wet myself.” “The reason was simple,” Slaven explained, trying to save everybody a change of underwear. “I got more sense out of her.” Unfortunately his canine chum couldn’t get her chops around the words “Brian Deane” or “Neville brothers mare” to warn Bernie off betting that Boro wouldn’t beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 1998.

What is two plus two?’ The player thought for a moment and then answered, ‘4?’ ‘Did you say 4?’ the coach exclaimed, excited that he had got it correct. Stupid Football Related Injuries Lomana Tresor LuaLua will have a scan on the foot injury that has kept him out of Portsmouth’s last three matches in the English Premiership. The DR Congo striker damaged the joint of his left foot after celebrating an equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on April 12 with a somersault. LuaLua, 25, had promised to refrain from back flips until Pompey were safe from relegation in the Premiership but paid the price for a change of mind. Dave Beasant, the former England goalkeeper, ruptured his ankle ligaments avoiding a falling bottle of salad cream he had just taken out of his fridge. He was injured for two months.

David James, an England goalkeeper, pulled a muscle in his back when reaching for a TV remote control. No wonder they call him ‘ Calamity James’.

Santiago Canizares, Spain’s 2002 World Cup goalkeeper, missed the matches after he had dropped a bottle of cologne on his foot and injured it.
