MANAGEMENT NOTES

Gary King Good afternoon everybody and welcome to our opponents today Poole Town FC. So that’s the festive season over and done with for another year. We can all get back into routine and crack on with the job in hand.

I thought our performance in the last game against Dunstable was controlled and solid. Dunstable, having only lost a couple of games in two seasons, are a side that are used to winning. We asked the squad on the night to deliver a performance which highlighted the gulf between the Southern League Premier and the Central Division and it is fair to say that we delivered a performance on the night which showed that gulf.

After the St Albans game in the space of a month we will play Chippenham, Bedford, Banbury, Frome, Arlesey, Burnham and Totton

and I am pleased to report that going into this run of games the squad is strong and ready to compete for every point available. Niall has been given the all clear and we hope to have him available again soon once Carol receives his medical report and we welcomed Ed back to first team training on Thursday. We have loaned Searsy to Burnham for one month (part of the agreement is he will not be available to play against us). Our feeling was Adrian desperately needed some minutes following two lengthy injuries. Burnham is on his door step

and was his preferred choice so both Adrian and ourselves are happy with this agreement for one month. I hope you all enjoy the game today and that we have a positive outcome. As I have said many times now, we are capable of beating any team in this division and Rowley Park is becoming a ground opposing teams will not relish visiting. Whilst our fortunes have changed over the last few months it is important that we recognise we still have a lot of work to do if we are to ensure a comfortable ending to this season for all. The next two games, Poole and St Albans, see us up against two of the division’s better sides, to put points on the table in either of these games would be a huge bonus ahead of a run of games which do have the potential to leave us in a safe position in this division.

With the turn of the weather it is disappointing to have not been able to play the Arlesey Town and Chippenham fixtures over the break. That said, we did manage to play the Totton, Cambridge, Stourbridge and Dunstable games accumulating two wins and a draw aswell as one defeat and ended up six points clear of the drop, with a game in hand over Bedford, and safely through to the quarter final of the Red Insure Cup.

This victory propelled St Neots back into the top half of the league table for the first time since early November and extended their unbeaten run to six matches. That run began just over a month age when they won their first meeting this season with second in the table Northampton Spencer so this victory also afforded them their second league double of the season. So the result was excellent but the performance of the team did not live up to the level of previous matches. For much of the match Spencer were the dominant force and they enjoyed much the larger share of possession as they adapted far better to the blustery conditions. Great credit is due to the St Neots defence who tackled and covered with great skill and even when Nicky Hurst limped off 15 minutes from time player/manager Steve Kuhne slotted into the defence to continue the sterling work. With several games still in hand St Neots have the foundation to go on to earn a creditable spot in the top six in the league table. Ironically after an indifferent start St Neots scored the only goal of the match after ten minutes in their first real attack. It came from what was arguably the best move of the game with Jon Hoggett and Matt Endersby

combining well on the left before slipping the ball inside to Russell Lawes and his probing cross was swept into the net by Steve Kuhne to continue his striking consistency as he collected his sixth goal in eight matches. Spencer replied with a neat flick from Matt Collins that tested Steve Young whilst at the other end visiting keeper Ollie Urquhart twice saved well from Gary Walker. However as the first half progressed the visitors began to dominate with Steve Young in constant action saving from Adam Wigley (twice) and Darren Frost.

With the wind in their favour after the change around more was expected of the St Neots attack but the visitors carried on where they had left off with Collins and Frost both shooting off target when well placed. In a rare attack after 64 minutes St Neots got the ball in the net again from a Russell Lawes corner but the eagle eyed referee spotted that Steve Kuhne had used his hand to put the ball in and he was booked for his trouble. Four minutes later the same thing occurred at the other end this time with Luke Dowling being booked for the same offence and then as Spencer stepped up their attacking the match became almost confined to the St Neots half with Gary Walker left to plough a solitary furrow

MATCH REPORT

Lorenzo Ferrari making his first start for St Neots was sent off twenty minutes from time as he collected a second yellow card but that only galvanised Garry King’s side. To their credit they recovered to dominate the last quarter of the match despite the numbers deficit and it never looked as though they were playing a man short whilst the point was enough to lift them back above Frome who were beaten at home and six points clear of the relegation zone. The St Neots point saver was midfielder Jay Davies who registered his seventh goal in his last seven matches and it could have been even better but for an early Shane Tolley ‘goal’ ruled out by an offside flag. The two team changes from midweek saw Ferrari and Tolley in for Lewis Hilliard and Matt Nolan.

It was the visitors who made the better start. Apart from an early effort stabbed wide by Tolley it was

Stourbridge who dominated the opening exchanges as St Neots struggled to get out of their own half. However despite their possession the visitors only created one real chance that saw Kayelden Brown fire well over the bar. St Neots broke forward with a flowing move after 16 minutes that saw Tolley net from close range but his effort was ruled out by an offside flag. Ben Billingham then volleyed wide for the visitors but then Ferrari was booked for simulation and he was quickly followed into the Referee’s notebook by Will Richards. The visitors’ goal came when Nathan Abbey could only parry a free kick and in attempting to retrieve the ball was judged to have brought down Ryan Rowe and Sean Geddes netted from the penalty spot. St Neots won several free kicks on the edge of the visitors’ box but failed to find their target although one Davies effort looked to be handled but the Referee was unimpressed. Tolley had a shot deflected over the bar whilst the visitors had their chances as Nathan Abbey saved well from Billingham and Brown got a fortunate deflection to go clear but dragged his shot well wide.

St Neots looked the better side immediately after the break but had to make an early substitution. Jake Woolley had not recovered from a heavy tackle in the first half and limped off to be replaced by Lewis Hilliard. Ben Ford saw a free kick fumbled by visiting goalkeeper Dean Coleman but the resultant corner was well gathered by Coleman and then at the other end Abbey watched a Billingham free kick sail over his crossbar. A Hilliard header was cleared off the line by Nathan Bennett and Abbey produced a fine save to deny Geddes. Then with 20 minutes left a clumsy challenge by Ferrari earned him that second yellow card but this seemed to spur St Neots instead of their visitors. Arthur Lee brought a fine save from Coleman with a close range header and both Hilliard and substitute Matt Nolan saw shots pass the wrong side of a post. However the initiative was with St Neots and it was no real surprise when eight minutes from time ay Davies thumped home a loose ball when the visiting defence failed to clear a Hilliard cross. It was no less than St Neots deserved and it extended their unbeaten run at home to five matches.

St Neots dominated from the first whistle and was ahead after just three minutes when a shot from the edge of the area by Lewis Hilliard took a slight deflection and nestled in the corner of the net. Hilliard then fed Jay Davies but his shot flew across the face of goal whilst the home side mounted their first attack but Swan dealt competently with a shot from Lee Roache. After 15 minutes the lead was doubled as Ben Ford sent over an inswinging corner that went straight in to the net at the near post without a defender getting

within touching distance to give the St Neots player his first goal for the Club and seven minutes later St Neots were 3-0 up when Jay Davies claimed his eighth goal in as many starts with a free kick from a narrow angle. Dunstable’s only response was a wind assisted free kick by Christopher Marsh that curled in dangerously under the crossbar but once again Swan was equal to the challenge. St Neots continued to produce attractive direct play with Hilliard and Ben Farrell both shooting narrowly wide and Lorenzo Ferrari going past two defenders to bring a good save from Head. Dunstable’s best first half chance came in the final minute when another wind assisted cross from Marsh arrived at the feet of Bernard Christie at the far post but Swan did well to save his close range shot. Five minutes after the restart Referee Andrew Tonks pulled a muscle and had to be replaced by an Assistant with St Neots Secretary Gary Wilson filling in on the line. The eight minutes delay saw all the momentum disappear from the game and with Dunstable playing better against the wind they quickly grew in confidence. Now it was the turn of the visiting defence to show their mettle with the excellent Ryan Frater and

skipper Gavin Hoyte winning every ball in the air the home side was restricted to just one significant shot by Christie saved by Swan. Sensing that they were now looking the more confident side Dunstable sent on two attacking substitutes and for a while St Neots were happy to soak up the pressure without looking like conceding a goal. However after 69 minutes from a Davies corner Dave Deeney saw a shot rebound from the woodwork and St Neots also introduced substitutes as players appeared to tire. Home substitute Harrison Carr shot wide when well placed and Hoyte cleared off the line following a corner but St Neots were largely comfortable and in the last ten minutes shots from debutant substitute Dan Cracknell and Lewis Wilson were close to extending the score line. The draw for the quarter final is likely to be published next week when all of the third round matches are completed.

Having beaten Aylesbury and Marlow in the earlier rounds this was Dunstable’s first Premier League opposition and with only two league defeats in twenty two games so far this season they could have been dubbed as pre-match favourites. However playing with extremely high energy St Neots totally dominated the first half and could have been further ahead but for some good saves by home keeper Jamie Head. Lewis Hilliard and Ben Farrell returned for Shane Tolley and Jake Woolley with the in-form Jay Davies pushed forward in attack and with Nathan Abbey rested there was a Southern League debut in goal for Daniel Swan who has a dual registration with the Saints.

Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year To One And All! Good Afternoon ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to Rowley Park – The Cozy Stadium, for this, our first Calor League Premier Division home game of the 2014, So I’d just like to wish everyone a belated very happy, prosperous and peaceful New Year and hope everybody is looking forward to what should be a very exciting year for the Saints. played here at Rowley Park this season, something for the supporters to look forward to. I won’t talk about our off the field achievements this year and what’s happening as they are documented elsewhere in this edition in the Managing Director’s notes.

Your performance off the pitch has been magnificent recently and it’s no coincidence that performances have been getting better and better. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Poole Town and hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us before travelling safely back down to Dorset at tea time today. Well, if you are reading this it must mean the rain and floods have eased off and we can all take a break from building our Arks and get back to what we all love, watching the Saints in action. So we say goodbye to 2013, a year in which, on the pitch, we successfully battled hard to maintain our Premier Division status in the 12/13 season under the stewardship of Iain and Andy and begun this season again battling hard

with good, young players but finding results and points hard to come by, so a change in management team and direction to some extent, arrived and also a massive change in our team line up has brought stability and results and obviously the points gained have seen us slowly climb ourselves away from the ‘drop’ positions. Long may this continue and lead to mid table safety at the very least this term as Gary, Zema and Nathan continue building a side capable of challenging at the right end of the table next season. We of course have at least one Cup Final to look forward to later this year as we face St Ives Town in the Hunts FA Senior Cup, with the game being

Tuesday evening saw us play for the first time in this calendar year as we maintained our fantastic form in the Red Insure Cup, winning three – nil at champions elect Dunstable Town on the Central Division. Three notable points of the night, Ben Ford scoring his first goal for the club, Jay Davies scoring his EIGHTH goal in EIGHT games and an impressive debut for regular Under21 keeper Dan Swan, drafted in for the unavailable Niall, who is still awaiting an appointment with the hospital after his recent illness (much to his annoyance as obviously he wants to play). When you consider we were struggling to keep clean sheets, that’s three games played and not one goal conceded yet....Impressive stuff eh? We now await the draw for the next round and have our fingers crossed for a home tie. Full marks must go to Dunstable for getting this game on as the weather has been quite unbelievable up to lunchtime of that day so a big well done to all at Creasey Park. Ok then, on to today’s game and let’s hear the Rabble in full voice again today. We count down the top ten bizarre stories that fall off the Managerial Roundabout that leaves us all scratching our bonses every season. 8) Christian Gross (Tottenham) November 1997-September 1998

There were immediate question marks when it emerged that Christian Gross was to succeed Gerry Francis in November 1997, mainly ‘who the hell is he?’

Promising to replicate the ‘sexy football’ of Chelsea in Geordieland, Gullit arrived with high expectations in 1998. However, in a textbook example of how to lose friends and alienate people, the Dutchman soon clashed with local hero Alan Shearer and club captain Rob Lee, with the gory details dragged through the sports pages.

With Spurs struggling in the Premier League relegation zone, perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to appoint a totally unknown Swiss bloke who had won a couple of titles with Grasshopper Zurich. Gross immediately became a figure of ridicule when, in broken English, he waved a London Underground travelcard and shouted: ‘I want this to become my ticket to the dreams!’ Unfortunately, like his ticket, hope soon expired as Spurs were whipped 6-1 at home by Chelsea. Unable to grasp neither the language nor the tactical demands of the Premier League, Gross was ruthlessly belittled by the tabloid press and departed back to Switzerland the following summer.

He dropped Shearer, the club’s leading marksman, and gave Lee’s shirt number to youngster Kieron Dyer. If the results were going his way, Gullit might have been justified but a 4-1 loss to Liverpool in his opening game set an ominous tone. Although he guided Newcastle to the 1999 FA Cup final, which they lost to Treble-bound Manchester United, he was shown the door after a 2-1 home defeat to local rivals Sunderland, for which he had once again dropped Shearer and Duncan Ferguson

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Sir Stanley Matthews However, on May 2nd 1953, Sir Stanley Matthews was to make FA Cup folklore. Playing Bolton Wanderers, Matthews’ Blackpool were 3-1 down at half time and almost certain to lose. Then, at the start of the second half Matthews dribbled past Bolton’s left back and brilliantly crossed in for Stan Mortensen to pull the score back to 3-2. Throughout the second half, Matthews continued to terrorise the Bolton defence and eventually Blackpool equalised with only a few minutes to play.

Full name: Stanley Matthews Date of birth: 01/02/1915 In the days of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Ryan Giggs, it’s easy to forget that wingers used to be a very rare breed in the earlier days of football. The reason for the change was, in large part, due to the arrival of Sir Stanley ‘The Magician’ Matthews. He was a type of footballer who lived for the game and worked extremely hard on and off the pitch to improve his performance and fitness. Sir Stanley Matthews was born on February 1st 1915 in Hanley near Stoke. Matthews’ raw pace and quick feet automatically got him recognised and soon he was playing games for England schoolboys. By the age of 17, he had already signed a professional contract with Stoke City and soon started matches regularly. In his second season, he was a key player in Stoke’s midfield and was duly awarded his first cap for England in 1934 at the age of just 19. Matthews’ England debut could not have gone much better, scoring a goal in a 4-0 thrashing of Wales. In just three years, he was a regular on the right wing for England, with his worth emphasised after scoring a hat-trick against Czechoslovakia. At only 20, Stanley Matthews was quickly becoming the biggest star in English football. His speed and constant trickery helped him to strike fear into opposition defenders. The ‘Wizard of Dribble’, as he was known, had become a dangerous weapon for both England and Stoke. During the Second World War, league football was postponed and Matthews was sent to Blackpool

to serve in the Royal Air Force. Sir Stanley continued to play friendly matches for many teams around the country such as Manchester United, Glasgow Rangers, Arsenal and Blackpool. However, it was to Blackpool where his career would take him on a permanent basis. After 262 matches and over 50 goals at Stoke, Matthews was transferred to the Seasiders for £11,500 in 1947. In his first season with Blackpool, Matthews took part in the FA Cup final at Wembley against Manchester United but lost 4-2; however Matthews would have more chances of winning the trophy soon after. Matthews’ good form was rewarded with a place in England’s World Cup Squad to go to Chile but he was only chosen to play one match. Nevertheless, domestically he was a mainstay for Blackpool and had helped them to another FA Cup Final against Newcastle United in 1951, only to yet again suffer defeat. At the age of 36, most people thought that this was his last chance to win an F.A. Cup medal.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Matthews picked up the ball on Bolton’s half-way line. After beating a few players, he closed in to Bolton’s goal-line, bamboozled his opponent with his trademark trick – faking to go to the left before taking the ball past the left back – and then crossed the ball straight to Blackpool’s Bill Perry who scored the winning goal and secured a winners medal for Stanley Matthews at the age of 38. Despite a hat-trick from Stan Mortensen, this game has been dubbed as the ‘Matthews Final’ and is widely recognised as one of the greatest FA Cup finals ever. Matthews was a thoroughly professional player and ahead of the game in terms of fitness. Whilst at Blackpool, he went jogging on the beach every day and never drank alcohol at all. A true testament to his fitness is the fact that he was able to play top-flight football until he was 46 and carry on playing until 50. He stayed a regular starter for England for 23 years, until he was 42. This is an achievement even today when most players retire completely at around 33 years old.

Mike Kearns Welcome to the Officials, players and supporters of Poole Town FC I hope you enjoy your day with us I remember well our last meeting earlier in the season when we lost by two goals to nil, a game that we did not really perform on the day and were still in transition.

A couple of league games off because of the weather but we did play a Red Insure Cup match against Dunstable Town earlier in the week. Gulf in Class Dunstable were top of the Calor Central Division and have only lost twice in the past 72 games. We ran out comfortable winners and honestly never had to get out of first gear. It just goes to show what a gulf there is between the Central and premier division and confirms just what a very hard league we play in. The Dunstable match was a very professional and managed

Now lets go back a couple of weeks to my return from a break I had in Florida and after some great results whilst I was away my first match was away to Burnham. Well I am beginning to think I may be a little bit of a jinx on the team, having done so well whilst I was away we lost to another very late goal as we have done on more occasions then I care to remember, so of course I got some stick on the coach coming home. “I’m leaving on a jet plane” was the rabble chorus line. Not to worry lads I am planning to be away again soon. Great Work Going into the club over the Christmas period I was thinking of the great work Lee and Iain have done with the development and apprentices it really does have the feel of a real football club.

Spooky Just then my Mobile phone rang, “Hello Mike, Barry Fry here” well I nearly fell into the pool, I thought the sun must have been getting to me. Anyway Barry wanted to discuss the possibility of loaning a player to us. Spooky or what. And yes I got the full story from Barry on that little episode, all I would say is that Barry and his Chairman went down to see Harry at Bournemouth the next day and saw Harry doing a runner over the fence and into the fields. Barry told me he was rather upset, anyway he said something like that as I could not possibly repeat his actual words. No wonder Harry did a runner. Finally thank you all for your support not just this year but also your continued support and I wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year. Lets see what this year brings from our football lives, I have a funny feeling it will be a very good year for us. All for one and one for all.

Many other Clubs managers and officials have said to me lately that St Neots Town is a proper football club, so I hope that means we are doing the right things. I’m sure we are as I had many approaches from other managers for the Position of First Team Manager even though we had not advertised any vacancy and had already had our current management team in place.

I was sitting by the pool reading Harry Redknapps biography, I was reading a passage about a little run in Harry had with Barry Fry many years ago about a player that Barry had playing for him and thought that the player was on contract with Barry hoping to do a decent transfer deal as a few clubs were in for the player. Harry found out that the player concerned was not actually on contract and “Stole” him from Barry that night. Harry’s account was that Barry was not happy at all (understatement) with what Harry did.

Welcome to our visitors this afternoon for our next engagement in the Calor Southern League Premier Division. They are the players, Directors and supporters of Poole Town making their first ever visit to the Town and we extend to them our usual warm Cozy Stadium welcome. Our two clubs have a similarity in our history because we are two of the clubs with the shortest recent record at Step Three in the Football Pyramid. Poole achieved their step Four status in the 2011/12 season fifteen years after relegation from the Southern League following a string of regular successes in the Wessex League. St Neots also won their way to that level the same season winning the Central Division of the Southern League and promotion to Step Three at the first attempt. Poole

finished runners-up to Bideford in the South and West Division but lost to Gosport in the play off final and had to wait a further season before appearing in the Premier Division. Current form shows that Poole are firmly established as one of the favourites to feature in the promotion race this season. At the turn of the year Poole was in fifth place in the table with 41 points â&#x20AC;&#x201C; eleven points behind second placed Cambridge City but with a whopping SIX matches in hand. This backlog has arisen because of a combination of National Cup matches either for themselves or scheduled opponents and the loss of matches to weather conditions. Our visitors are already

destined to have a very busy start to 2014 as they bid to eliminate that backlog of fixtures. They also have major off-field issues with less than three months to bring their Tatnam Stadium facilities up to the required standard for Premier Division football. We wish them every success as they aim for Conference standard football in the near future.

Club History Poole FC were formed on 20th September 1890 by the merger between two local sides, Poole Rovers and Poole Hornets, who can trace their origins back to 1880. Poole do not enter the Dorset League until 1896, where they stay until 1902/03. In 1903/04 Poole join the Hampshire League for the first time, but only for one season. They competed in the West Div finishing in 4th place with 17 points from 14 games, just above Bournemouth FC. After a year out of league competition, Poole return to the Hampshire League West Division for a longer stay, finishing 5th out of 7 teams in 1905/06. They finished 4th out of 7 in 1906/07, 4th of 8 in 1907/08. Poole could always rely on success in cup competition, and won the Dorset Senior Cup for the 5th time in 1907, winning the original trophy outright. Pooleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best season was 1908/09 when

They won the Wessex League Title again in 2009-10 by an impressive 18 points and reached the final of the League Cup, but again failed

They also won Wessex Premier title for the third successive season once more by a huge 20 point margin and at last gained Promotion back to their spiritual home in the Southern league after a 15 year absence having finally been given permission to make improvements to the ground to take advantage of the offered Promotion. The first season back in 2011-12 saw them make a late charge to secure second place behind Champions Bideford .They beat Hungerford convincingly in the play off Semi’s and were minutes away from winning the Final against Gosport . But hopes of a second straight promotion were dashed by two late goals from Steve Claridge to send Gosport up to the Southern Premier. 2012/13 – sees Poole win the S&W league title + the Dorset Senior Cup + the Southern League Championship trophy and Premier football is back at Poole.

After a chequered and varied history over the next hundred years that elusive Silverware finally arrived in the 2008/9 season. Poole Town won the Wessex Premier title and were to finish as the second best team of 1,600 Football Association clubs in the whole of England, based on points per match, with the following record: played 42, won 38, drawn 2, lost 2. At the time of securing the title they had been unbeaten in the league and were the top team in the country, but then they inexplicably lost their last two league games! They also won the Dorset Senior Cup (beating Dorchester 2-0 aet), in a thriller at Weymouth’s Radipole Lane ground and reached the semi finals of the League Cup. They were, however denied promotion to level 4 due to inadequate ground grading at the Tatnam.

Who calls the shots?... Tom Killick Manager Previously a Town player with a long non-league career as a prolific striker. NonLeague Player of the Year 1991/2, member of the F.A. Vase winning Wimborne team in 91/92. Steered club to promotion in his first year and established Poole as a powerhouse team in the Wessex Premier Division. Winning the last three titles. Promoted to The Southern South and West in 2011-12, he built a squad to finish second in their first year and missed out on Promotion in the play-off final but won the league outright in 2012-13, He won the Dorset Senior cup in 2010 and 2013.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

His and Hers Ade Roberts These days, the beautiful game of football is as much a game for the ladies as it is for the boys. The Women’s game continues to blossom around the world yet who would have dared to suggest just a few decades ago that we’d have so many ladies in the stands, officiating games or even sitting in the boardrooms of our football clubs? Now look at us, almost a third of the crowd at games these days are said to be female. If you were to compare a crowd photograph taken at a modern day game to that of any game prior to the 1990’s, the difference would striking. Long gone are the days when the terrace was packed with suit-wearing, flat-capped fellas and young lads standing on milk crates. How dull do those old photo’s look compared to those of the colourful, mixed gender crowd of today? We (the fellas and the ladies, young and old) don’t just wear our ‘Sunday best’ for the game, we wear what we like, often sporting the team colours, although sadly, there are far fewer of us within the grounds nowadays! So much has changed within football but it appears that there is still some male chauvinism involved even in this day and age. Twitter users apparently went bonkers recently when, in the absence of Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan stepped in to present Match of The Day on TV. This upset a few footie lovers on the night who still tend to think that football chitter-chatter is only for the male presenters. How ridiculous is that? If I had a choice of watching the likes of Adrian Chiles or Gabby Logan, I’d choose the latter every time. Gabby knows her stuff when it comes to football; after all, she grew up in the football environment with her dad being the legendary Terry Yorath. Imagine watching Soccer AM with no Helen Chamberlain present, it wouldn’t be the same would

it? There are some great female characters within football today and they really know the game, so why are some blokes so against the MotD alternative to Gary Lineker? Some of those old timer Ex Pro’s that spew their views on football programmes can barely speak the Queens’ English unlike the lovely Gabby [and she’s of Welsh Origin] Personally, I don’t really understand why the producers of football shows feel it necessary to employ eyecandy ladies to present their show; we’d still watch them either way wouldn’t we? Of course we would, we love the game. And obviously it’s not just the fellas that love the game, there are plenty of ladies that love it just as much as some of us guys. Karen Brady and Delia Smith are a few of the high profile females in football, both of which have held directorship roles at their clubs. These ladies along with the Gabby Logan’s and Helen Chamberlain’s of the world have a natural love for the game.

Not so natural is the love of the game that a lady called Jane Lindley from Nottinghamshire has. Jane hated the game of football, or at least she did until she received a liver transplant operation in 1999. The liver she received was taken from a young lad from Yorkshire. Amazingly, following the operation, Jane found that she had a real love for football, especially for Leeds United and she subsequently became a passionate fan of the Elland Road club. Now that is incredible but also quite worrying too. What if, at some point, one of us needs a liver transplant and it transpires that we feel compelled to support a different team, or worse, a rival team? Let’s join voices boys and girls and raise the roof for the lads out there as we search for victory in today’s little encounter.

Hoof Zaire were a surprise qualifier for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, the first black African nation to qualify for a World Cup finals, and there was enormous pressure on their shoulders, with the country’s leader, Mobutu Sese Seko informing the players - via his armed guards- that should they lose by four goals or more to holders Brazil in their final group match, there would be dire consequences.

Perhaps understandable then, the way Zairian defender Mwepu Ilunga carried on when faced with a free kick 25 yards from his goal. As the Brazilians, including Jairzinho, lined up to send the ball goalwards, Mwepu burst from the defensive wall, and simply lamped the ball upfield. The Brazilians were gobsmacked, the commentator was almost laughing, the referee issued a yellow card. Mwepu had the last laugh though, his side only lost by three goals, and the team were allowed to return home. Not so much with their heads held high, but at least they still had them.

Phantom Goals In 1993 Referee Stuart Attwell was not the most popular person in football. In fact, he definitely isn’t. But when he awarded a goal to Reading for an “effort” that not only failed to cross the goal line, but also didn’t go within ten yards of the goal-posts, in a game against Watford, the goal ultimately earned Reading a point, The game is Partick Thistle against Dundee Utd, a Scottish Premier League game. What happens is simply ludicrous. Dundee Utd score a perfectly legitimate goal through Paddy Connolly, the ball blasted from close range into the back of the net. As the ball comes out of the goal, it is caught by Thistle defender Martin Clark, who hands it to keeper Andy Murdoch to launch upfield, in anticipation of the restart. Yet, unbelievably, neither the referee nor the linesman spot the goal, or the handball, and wave play on, with United livid. Luckily, the disallowed goal did not cost Dundee Utd in the end. Imagine the scenes if it had.

World Cup theme, how about this one? In July 1950, Rajko MitiÄ‡ of Yugoslavia was all set to take on the mighty Brazil in the Maracana stadium. But as he bounded gleefully from the dressing room to the field, he managed to crack his head off a girder, causing a severe cut to his forehead. Of course those were the days before substitutes, so Yugoslavia were forced to start the game with only ten men, as MitiÄ‡ was patched up for the first twenty minutes By the time a dazed and bloodied MitiÄ‡ arrived on the field, his team were a goal down (MitiÄ‡ was not informed of the scoreline until half time), and they would finish with a 2-0 defeat, which led to their elimination from the tournament.

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S VIEWS

Plans for 2014 Lee Kearns 2013 was busy busy busy and for the most part it was fantastically enjoyable. At the start of 2013 I sat down with Iain and Louise and we spoke at length about what we wanted to instigate and achieve throughout the year. Looking at my notes from that Jan 2013 meeting it gives me a great feeling of satisfaction and pride that we pretty much got everything up and running and as a result the impact on the business has been very positive. The St Neots Town Youth Partnership and the Saints U21’s being accepted at step 6 has been a fantastic achievement. The apprenticeship programme and the partnership with Longsand’s and Ernulf got off to a brilliant start and the apprentices are really enjoying the opportunity. We have seen an increase in function bookings and the continued growth in this area of both income and commendable reputation are all helping our business. For those of you are yet to see a “Vets” game keep an eye on the website for the next one, it has been great to watch them coming home and again becoming part of their club once more. We have continued to offer our support to the Hunts U18’s rep team to use Rowley Park as their home ground, including offering to stage all county youth finals at Rowley Park (unlike other clubs we do not charge Hunts FA facility hire for rep games and youth finals because we believe that we have a duty to support them in any way we can with regards to youth football). These are just a few objectives that we discussed in Jan 2013 that have come to fruition. There is an unmistakable air of excitement around the club at the moment, a feeling that we are on the cusp of something that will give us all the chance to take the club to the next level both on and off of the field.

So plans for 2014 are? In a word Expansion!! Our aims and objectives for 2014 and beyond is to increase the number of youth teams (both grassroots and development) with the aim being to double the number of kids from the current 380 to 800 in the next three years. We also want to introduce girl’s teams by the start of the 2014-2015 to accommodate all youngsters wishing to get involved in football. We are putting in big efforts to increase the apprenticeship programme to around 80 lads (and girls) by July this year and for these apprentices to start to populate both the U18’s and U21’s by the 2015-2016 season. (We will investigate the logistics of a ladies team this year as well) We still need to increase all revenue streams in 2014 with the main growth areas being Matchday

receipts, functions and events and Commercial opportunities. Next we will be looking at the Norwich City partnership agreement and to either get it right for us as a club or to move and look at other opportunities that are already presenting themselves. Finally and most importantly we will be giving our full support to Gary, Zema and Nathan for the remainder of this season and for the foreseeable future so that we as a club can match their collective ambitions to take the first team forward to the next level. We have only achieved and we can only achieve if we all work together and support each other in a positive and productive way. No one person is greater than the sum of the club and this is why we will succeed. Lee

Club Secretary Those of you that know me will know that I was an assistant referee at this level for over ten years which meant refereeing at UCL level, including St. Neots Town, so I have experienced the real abuse from the rabble, not just from my recent appearances! Having got fed up with the rain and the cold and possibly the fitness, I approached Mike Kearns about helping out on match days, initially to look after the referees, then hospitality and now secretary. I became secretary after Peter Naylor, who had fulfilled the role for a number of years decided to retire to spend more time with his granddaughter. When I enquired as to what the role involved I was told that there would be a few jobs on match days with the occasional piece of paper work. Easy I thought, I can do that and during pre-season that was the case. Once I had ensured that our entries for the FA Cup, Trophy and Youth Cup had been received and our affiliation to the county had been acknowledged it was just a matter of completing the paper work for the players that we wanted to sign. However, once the season started it changed somewhat!

As we all know we did not start that well which resulted in additional players coming in. One particular day I signed 6 players on a Monday with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;demandâ&#x20AC;? that they all be available for the game on the Tuesday. These signings involved loan deals and transfers from other clubs which meant forms being signed by players, their former clubs secretaries and then being forwarded on to the relevant leagues, the FA and the clubs in time to be registered. Since Gary, Zema & Nathan have come on board I now dread Thursday evenings /Friday mornings as it is always then that I get instructions from Gary to sign a certain player or to put in a seven day request so that we can talk to a player after this period. Strangely, these players are always desperately needed for the next game which puts on extra pressure. On match days, I still like to welcome the match officials, many of whom I have worked with previously. I then have to ensure that they receive details of the team 45 minutes before kick off and then produce the team sheets for the press box and our guests. At half time and at the end of the game I am responsible for reporting the result and paying the match officials. I also take it on board to look after them at the end of the game and this is a good opportunity to renew old acquaintances and discuss the talking points. This has always been a joy even if I may not always agree with what they have done.

This is a voluntary role and so far I have always been able to fulfil these urgent requirements and I need to thank my boss, Kevin Hull of Premier Plus in fully supporting me in this respect. Without this support I would not be able to fulfil the role. Kevin and Premier Plus have supported local sporting teams previously with Kevin being an ex-President and the current treasurer of St. Neots Rugby club.
