Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today's Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midland Division game.

Today we extend a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Shepshed Dynamo and we hope your brief stay with us here in St Neots is an enjoyable one.

As I'm sitting penning these notes, the temperature has once again tumbled to below freezing for about the nine hundredth day running but looking at the weather forecast for Saturday, I've got to say that its looking optimistic that we may have some football. There's nothing wrong with sitting infront of the TV watching Jeff Stelling and his team bring you all the latest scores from up and down the country but you just can't beat the thrill and buzz of a non league matchday.

Three weeks without a competitive fixture certainly isn't ideal just as we had hit a bit of good form but unfortunately we have no say in what Mother Nature has in her plans. This past weekend saw lots of games cancelled, not just in the non league game but also in the EFL and Women's Super League. Chelsea Women managed to start their game versus Liverpool however it was clear to see from the very first seconds that this game was never going to go the full distance and it was halted by referee Neil Hair (a welcome and regular visitor who officiates during our pre season games) after just seven or eight minutes. Another game, on Saturday, saw Posh have their game at home to Charlton Athletic pulled by the referee at 1:50pm due to frozen ground. It's never an easy process / decision for the match officials pulling a game, lots of things to take into account, players' safety being paramount of course. Let's hope we are all learning as we go along. no matter what level we play at.

Another tough game today against a team that beat us 3-1 back in December. As always, get behind the boys from the first whistle.

DrewRobertssavedhissidepotentialembarrassmentthreeminutesfromtime when he netted a typical opportunist goal to seal all three points against bottomofthetableBanburyUnited. Itwasthestriker’sfirstgoalinfivegames but it took his total to 24 for the season to equal the tally of last season’s top scorer Lewis Hilliard. Banbury were a poor side but they never gave up trying and their pace in attack always made them look potentially dangerous on the break. St Neots paraded their latest signing the experienced Mat Mitchel-King recently with Dartford in the Football Conference but who can number amongst his former clubs Crewe Alexandra and AFC Wimbledon in the Football League.HeslottedintomidfieldinplaceofthenowdepartedDavidHuttonwho hasgonetonearneighborsBiggleswadeTownandmadeasolidstartashisside threatened much but delivered little in terms of goal scoring chances. Also making his St Neots debut as a second half substitute was full back Sam Harty whobecamethefourthnewsigningforManagerDavidBatch.

There was a slow start to the game and St Neots got a shock in Banbury’s first attack after nine minutes when the visitors’ snatched a surprise lead. Adam Tann conceded a careless free kick that was crossed to the far post by Jordan GreenandwhenthehomedefencefailedtoclearLerouTahinpouncedtoscore from close range. Mitchel-King had an early impact heading on a long throw from Max York to bring a full length push clear from visiting keeper Leigh Bedwell and then he had a threatening shot blocked by a defender. Drew Roberts broke clear on the left to cross to the far post when Ben Mackey just failed to get a touch and then at the other end lone striker Tahin put a snap shotjustwide. StNeots’approachplaywasneatandconcisebuttheirfinalball lacked quality and accuracy but they drew level after 34 minutes when a long cross from the left by Josh Bickerstaff saw a rare glancing header by Lewis Hilliard elude the despairing dive of Bedwell to creep in at the near post. It was no less than St Neots possession deserved and three minutes later Ben Mackey netted again only to be ruled fractionally offside and just before the break he hadanothernetboundeffortdeflectedforacorner.

Max York was withdrawn at half time with new man Sam Harty deputizing and he quickly set up Hillard for a weak finish. However just past the hour a Matt Spring corner was scraped off the line by Bedwell as far as Hilliard and his well directed shot towards the top corner of the net brought the save of the match from the visiting keeper. Tahin looked lucky only to pick up a yellow card after what looked like an elbow on Tann and in a bid to insert more pace to their attack St Neots sent on Lorenzo Ferrari. In a rare Banbury sortie forward the versatile Jack Wilkinson moved from midfield to full back did well to clear off the St Neots line meantime frustration was growing with several promising St Neots attacks ended by the offside flag. Mitchel-King volleyed over the bar and when another disappointing draw looked to be St Neots fate they snatched a winnerthreeminutesfromtime.Hartysetupthechancewithacrossfromthe right and when Ferrari’s initial shot was blocked Drew Roberts displayed his predatoryskillsbeingintherightplaceattherighttimewithaclinicalfinish.A secondgoalhadalwayslookedlikelytoclinchthepointsanditcouldhavebeen evenbetteratthedeathbutforasmartsavebyBedwellfromMattSpring.

Our two sides met for the first time at Shepshed quite recently - on 3rd December last year at the Dovecote Stadium in Shepshed. Our hosts came smartly out of the traps that day scoring twiceinthefirstfourminutesbeforeaddingathirdbeforehalftime. Ourladsrespondedwell after the break and a Trey Charles goal early in the second half seemed to give us a chance to salvage something from a poor first 45 minutes, but our hosts showed how to defend a lead and we returned home with nothing. Since then, Shepshed kicked off 2023 in style beating Loughborough at home and Dereham away and followed that up (like ourselves) with two blank Saturdays thanks to the recent inclement weather. Shepshed are currently in tenth place in the table some fourteen points of our lads thanks to a solid away record where they have won six and drawn one of their twelve completed matches. They will look to maintain thatrecordtoday.

Last season Shepshed finished a respectable eleventh in the league table having graduated from the United Counties League. This season they had a busy start to their campaign in cup competitionwithnofewerthansevenoutingsinthetwoNationalcompetitions. IntheFACup they first had to travel to the North East to face Winterton Rangers in a replay after a goalless first match and they won 3-1.At home in the next round they defeated Pinchbeck United from the UCL before a second home draw – this time against County neighbours Coalville. A 1-1 drawwasfollowedbya2-0replaydefeat. ThenintheTrophytheydefeatedBiggleswadeTown inthefirstqualifyingroundbeforeanawaydefeatatHarboroughTown.

An impressive second half display by St Neots did little to offset a poor first 45 minutes. Conceding two goals in the first four minutes of the game gave the visitors what proved to be an impossible task against a home side who displayed the importance of defending stoutly when St Neots produced their much improved second half comeback. The first half loss of full back Jon-Paul Duncliffe to injury did little to boost St Neots’ confidence but they can take some comfort from their spirited second half response. However, on the downsidewithhomevictoriesonthedayforDaventryTownandHinckleyLRFC, St Neots became further detached from the sides above them in the league table. Theyarebeginningtolookdoomedtoasecondhalfofseasonrelegation scrap.Only one team change from the winning side the previous Saturday was made – this enforced because of the injury sustained by Steven Sylvester, with PannyBoxerbroughtbacktotheheartofthedefence.

The opening four minutes of the match proved pivotal to the outcome of the contest. In Shepshed’s first attack after just two minutes St Neots conceded a free kick wide on the left and then watched as Cam Moore rose high above the defence to head across goal for Reece Morris to net from close range at the far post. Worse was to follow for two minutes further into the match Morris picked out Zayn Hakeem who got a fortune rebound off a defender to add a secondgoal.Shell-shockedStNeotsrespondedwell,andaTreyCharlesshotwas blocked. and Liam Hook followed up but off balance could only fire over the bar. St Neots custodian Jamie Greygoose then produced an outstanding reflex save to push a free header from Toby Ritzema over the bar from a Moore corner whilst at the other end St Neots were bombarding the home goal without success.Charles saw a shot deflected over the bar by a defender, a Joe Rider effort was also deflected and Panny Boxer saw his effort cleated off the linewiththehomekeeperbeaten. Thensevenminutesbeforethebreakalong ball from deep in defence saw the speedy Zayn Hakeem outpace the St Neots defencetoaddathirdgoal.

St Neots replaced Rider with Robbie Mason after the break and within seven minutes he made his presence felt with a neat flick to find Trey Charles who rounded his marker to pull a goal back for St Neots. That could have sparked a revival, but the home defence was stubbornly uncompromising despite St Neots enjoying the much greater share of possession. St Neots stretched their unbeaten run to three matches as they clambered out of the second automatic relegation spot for the first time since early November. It was a much needed but bitter/sweet victory for they created chances almost at will against a poor visiting defence, but three times they were denied by the woodwork and their overall finishing was not good, and they tarnished their overall display when they conceded a late careless goal.However, a tally of seven points out of nine in their last three matches is almost as good as it gets, and they must now build upon these green shoots of recovery to start climbing up the league table. The morning news that Brandon Njoku had departed on loan to higher graded Cheshunt was a shock as he was fast building a promising partnership with Trey Charles in the St Neots attack but against only modest opposition, he was hardly missed with Manny Osei moving forward to link in attack. Also missing from the starting line-up was injured skipper Callum Anderson but he was replaced by George Hoddle who relished his midfield freedom, and Dan Barton returned in Njoku’s wide berth.

There was a breathless start to the match as both sides made it clear that attack would be their approach. In St Neots first attack inside two minutes visiting keeper Kacper Kurylowicz distinguished himself with a fine save at the foot of a post to deny Trey Charles and then play switched swiftly to the other end where from a corner visiting skipper Alfred Wren fired over the bar. The action continued with Charles seeing a shot deflected that Kurylowicz did well to push around a post and then the under siege keeper did well to push a Dan Barton cross for another corner. All that action was in the first six minutes, and the pace did not drop with St Neots well in control. After heading a Manny Osei cross wide TREY CHARLES made amends after 17 minutes when he opened the scoring from close range after more excellent work by Osei. Liam Hook, Joe Rider and Charles all went close to extending the lead and then after 25 minutes a second goal from JOE RIDER settled St Neots nerves and within a further ten minutes St Neots had been denied by the woodwork twice. Several more good chances were squandered and Yaxley must have felt fortunate only to have conceded twice in the first 45 minutes.

The pattern continued after the break and in the first eight minutes after the break St Neots added two more goals. First JOE RIDER exchanged a sweet 1-2 with Charles to score the best goal of the match and then TREY CHARLES claimed his second goal with a direct free kick from the edge of the area that the visiting keeper could not hold. With both of their substitutes on, the visitors adopted a more defensive pattern seemingly determined to make St Neots attacking approach more difficult. The tempo of the match noticeably dropped with St Neots still dominating possession but creating fewer openings. Visiting skipper Alfred Wren tried his luck from distance but his volley was wide and as the second half progressed Marcus Pancho had Yaxley’s clearest opening but shot weakly wide. St Neots seemed to think that their job was done but they were careless at the back and goalkeeper Jamie Greygoose and his defence seemed to lose concentration allowing Dimargio Robinson to steal in for a simple tap in consolation goal four minutes from time.Substitute Jack Barnett then saw an effort deflected for a corner and Osei sent St Neots final effort wide.

SHEPSHED DYNAMO HISTORY

Shepshed, in NW Leicestershire, has had football teams associated with it since 1879. Whilst many of these achieved local recognition over the years, it was with the formation of the Charterhouse club in the mid-1970s, that the name of Shepshed became known nationally. Between 1978 and 1984, the club rose from the lower reaches of the Leicestershire Senior League to the summit of the Southern League Premier Division, winning seven consecutive promotions (including six successive championship titles) on the way. They also reached both the Semi-Final and Quarter-Final of the FA Vase, as well as the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. Unfortunately the club, then known by its original name of Shepshed Albion, closed down in 1994.

1994 to 2004

The current Dynamo club was formed in the summer of 1994. Initially playing in the newly formed Midland Alliance, the club enjoyed a successful first season, finishing fourth. The following season, under Manager Mark O'Kane, the club won the title by eight points including a remarkable 23 game unbeaten start. After a hectic summer of improvement works, the club took up their place in the Southern Football League for the 1996/97 campaign. Whilst league success proved harder to come by the club more than made up for this in the FA Cup by reaching the First Round Proper. Despite a heavy away defeat at the hands of Carlisle United, the memory of the day will live long with all that were there. The second season proved less successful, and with the team struggling near to the bottom of the league, O'Kane was replaced in February 1998, by John Hanna. The change brought a creditable 16th place by the end.

1998/99 saw the best league season to date. Shepshed were in the top six of the league for most of the season, but slipped to a final placing of 10th, after a poor run-in. 1999/2000, the Centenary year for the club's ground "The Dovecote", saw a season-long battle against relegation, a final placing of 18th and the resignation of Hanna in July 2000. His assistant, Dave Williams, was appointed. His first season in charge saw a 15th place finish. The next two saw the financial purse strings tightened, however whilst Shepshed flirted with relegation, a 16th place position was recorded in both. The summer of 2003 saw a change in the constitution of the football club that led to it becoming a private limited company. However, in footballing terms, the season can be fairly described as disastrous, as it saw two changes in management after Williams was sacked in October and his successor Dave Clay resigned in January.

OpponentSpotlight ShepshedDynamo

Pete McGurk then took charge of first team matters but despite improved results, he had insufficient time to prevent Shepshed from finishing bottom of the Southern League Western Division. However, restructuring in the summer of 2004 reprieved Dynamo and saw them start their 10th anniversary season as members of the UniBond League. McGurk led the team to a respectable 15th place finish in a season that also saw them win the Loughborough Charity Cup and Coalville Charity Cup double.

2005 to date

Season 2005/06 culminated in a fine 10th place finish and saw the club receive the UniBond League Club Of The Month Award, Fair Play Award and Goalscorers Award for April 2006. Dynamo also reached the finals of both the Loughborough and Coalville Charity Cups. McGurk resigned in December 2006, with the club in 15th place, replaced by his assistant Adam Stevens. He resigned in April 2007 after a 1-6 defeat at second-bottom Chorley left Dynamo in 20th place (fifth bottom). Former Belper Town manager Martin Rowe was appointed in May 2007, however his reign was to last only until November, after a dismal start to the season. Ex Sutton Town and Gedling Town manager Lee Wilson was Rowe's replacement. Fortunes soon turned around and Dynamo ultimately finished in 15th position. The 2007/08 season finished with silverware after Shepshed lifted the Loughborough Charity Cup with a 3-1 victory over near-neighbours Loughborough Dynamo. The 2008/09 season saw fortunes dramatically change for the better, with Shepshed ending the season in 8th place, their highest league table position for 13 years, however Wilson resigned immediately after the end of the season. Dave Stringer and Jimmy Ginnelly were announced to lead Shepshed into the 2009/10 season, but following a difficult season, Dave parted company with Shepshed. Barry Baker and Bob Norris were appointed for 2010/11. As the season started Baker was hit by a serious illness and forced to resign. Dynamo appointed Dave Frecklington, but this again failed to last, and he was relieved of his duties after a string of poor results that saw Shepshed finish in 21st position leading to relegation. However Shepshed were reprieved following financial problems at Rushden & Diamonds. John Ramshaw was appointed the new manager as Evo-Stik NPL Division One South football was awarded to Shepshed for the 2011/2 season. In October Eastwood Town persuaded Ramshaw to take over their hot seat. His assistant Chris (Chalky) White was given the post in November 2011.

In 2012, with new Chairman Mick Sloan, Shepshed Dynamo competed in the United Counties League, where after a mixed start ended the season on a high finishing in 9th position and beating local rivals Quorn FC 5-0 to lift the Loughborough Charity Cup.

In 2013/14 Shepshed were yet again moved sideways to compete in the Midland Football Alliance and after a season of mixed results finished in16th place. Jim Wynne and Matt Houldsworth began the campaign with a mix of old and new players signed. In November they were replaced by the successful championship winning Jeff Stocking from Oadby, strengthening the squad but finished the season in 15th place.

For the 2014-15 season Jeff was joined by former Loughborough and Quorn manager John Folwell and they recruited a squad of talented young players who enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season. Due to business requirements Jeff stood down with John being joined by Jimmy Gray. Before the completion of that season however John also had to resign due to promotion at work. Jimmy Gray saw out the season, helped by Andy Hohn, and the side finished fourth.

The management team for the 2016/17 season assembled the bulk of last season’s successful side and a mix of experienced players with a group of promising youngsters. Although staying in the higher end of the league for most of the season, including reaching the last 32 in the FA Vase and winning the Loughborough Charity Cup, the club finished fifteenth.

For the 2017-18 campaign again a mix of the previous season’s players plus experienced additions were to represent the club with hopes of a much higher finish in the league table. A competitive season ended with a 7th position but also the loss of manager Gray.

This saw ex-Gresley manager Damion Beckford-Quailley take charge and a squad comprising some of last term’s players joined by new faces and several ex-Shepshed favourites returning to the Dovecote.

The FA allocation to leagues for season 2019/20 saw the club again moved to the United Counties for a second time. Damion remained as manager, assisted by Wayne Scott and Dave Clay. Several new faces were included in the squad.

Season 2019/20 saw the club in a very strong position for promotion before the Covid pandemic caused the season to be null and void. With a late start, 2020/21 was a busy one with the club retaining most of the squad and being joined by three additions and increased coaching staff.

Despite this, during the FA restructuring, we were finally promoted back to Step 4 via the PPG system after over 10 years at Step 5.

In the first season back at Step 4 Dynamo Manager Damion Beckford-Quailey, assisted by Gary Drake, managed an impressive 11th placed finished, whilst also beating many of the top finishing teams in the process.

Non-League clubs include Bedworth United, Gresley, Stamford and Nuneaton Borough. A brick labourer who supports Arsenal with his favourite player being Thierry Henry.

JAKE BETTS “Bettsy” Experienced central defender previously with Loughborough Dynamo (Westerby Cup winner). A sports development coordinator who plays golf and is a Leicester City fan. Club Captain.

JORDAN WAKELING “Jords” Centre back who has already played at Gresley, Barwell, Oadby, Grantham and Quorn. Employed as recruitment manager, he is Leicester based and a City fan. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is his favourite player, and he enjoys socializing and travel.

JIAH MEDRANO. Leicester born player who signed from local side Kirby Muxloe, previously was Yeovil Town U18s captain, and made several first team matchday squads. Comfortable as CB, LB or a DM

SHAQUILLE O’NEIL-BROOKS “Shaqs” Left back who can also play as a centre-back, signed for the ‘21-22 season from Lutterworth Town where he previously won the Westerby Cup and the UCL Division One. Originally born in Jamaica, he now lives in Leicester where he is employed as a business insurer, and he enjoys gaming in his leisure time. An Arsenal fan who lists Messi as his favourite player

TOBY RITZEMA “Tobes” Jersey born defender who is currently studying at Loughborough University, which was his former club. Is also registered with Jersey Bulls.

NIALL PRENDERVILLE “Prendo”. Signed from Quorn (MFA league cup winner) and also played for Barrow Town. Centre midfield player who is an operations manager. Supports Everton and enjoys gym work.

JAMES SNEDDEN “Sneds” Joined Dynamo from Stamford in November ‘21. The Leicester based midfielder also names Notts County as a previous club.

LEKE SHODUNKE “Leks” Signed from Dynamo rivals Quorn FC in October 2021. This 21 year old attacking midfielder from Leicester has always shown quality when we have played against him, so glad to get him on board!

JOHN KING “Kingy” Tricky wide player who can play on either on the left or right. Has experience with Stamford, Quorn, South Normanton and Radford. Nottingham based student and a Forest fan and admires Messi. Enjoys all types of sport.

REECE MORRIS “Big Man” An attacking midfielder who has played for Stamford, Gresley, Nirvana and Grantham. Leicester based delivery driver; he supports Arsenal but admires Hazard.
