THAME UNITED FC SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL

Greenie’s Greetings With Director Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s Pitching In Southern League Division One Central Match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Thame United Football Club and we hope you all have an enjoyable stay with us here in Cambbridgshire before embarking on a safe journey home back into Oxfordshire later this evening. These notes are being penned prior to our acheduled trip to Didcot Town so obviously the result of that game remains inknown at this stage however our last outing was a stormer when we demolished Colney Heath with an emphatic second half performance, rattling in four goals to add to the two we scored in the first half. Talking about four goals, wasn't it great to see Joe Rider back in his early season form, scoring four times and twice in the previous two games to take his season's haul to an amazing 18 goals in just 19 starts in what has been a very frustrating time for Joe with a lomg spell out with injury. Let's hope that he has continued his fine form into today's fixture. As well as the rusult on what was NonLeague Day 2022, It was pleasing to see lots of new (and old) faces returning to cheer on the boys so thank you all for coming along and hopefully you were all impressed with what we served up that day. Ok then, back to today and I know that we are in for a tough game against the Red Kites who beat us 2-0 at their place earlier in the season however, we seem to be in a much better place at the moment than we were back then so hopefuly we will be beter equipped for the job in hand. Please do get behind the lads from the off, your vocal support really does make a difference out on the pitch.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME

From the Dugout With First Team Manager Peter Gill IGood afternoon and welcome to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s penultimate home league game of the season. We wish a warm welcome to our visitors Thame United; I hope you enjoy your visit to St. Neots this afternoon.

As we approach the final few games of the season it can often be a slow burner when you can’t go up and can’t go down. I can genuinely say that the lads have been first class in their approach and there is a hunger and a desire to finish the season as strong as possible. Our recent form points to that. The win over Colney Heath was a nice reward for the players efforts over the last 6 weeks.

We hope to use this final period of the season as a springboard to carry momentum into next season. I hope to be able to keep most of this group of players together and add some more experience to give us the best chance of progressing again next year. Talking of next year, we have started to look at planning a pre-season and hope to announce our schedule in the coming weeks. I can confirm Cambridge United will be playing a first-team preseason fixture here at the Premier Plus on Saturday 16th July. We hope to host at least one EFL club in preseason, however with he World Cup coming in November-December the EFL season starts 2 weeks earlier this season which may prove to be an obstacle.

Moving onto today’s game we know we face a difficult opponent having lost away earlier in the season. Thame will still be hoping to make the play off’s so will be needing the three points today. The lads will need to be at their best and need your support for us to get anything from today’s game.

As always, I, The Staff & The Players appreciate your support. We all look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the End of Season Awards Evening on Friday 29th April. Up the Saints! Pete

Pete

Dan Dodson Commercial chat Dear Saints Fans, It is an absolutely pleasure to write my first programme notes as a director of this wonderful club. It is a great honour to be part of the custodianship of this magnificent club and hopefully we can take the club to the next level. Firstly allow me to welcome the supporters, officials and players of Thame United to the Premier Plus Stadium, we hope you enjoy your visit to our home today. This week has been a relatively quiet one commercially, me and Mehmet have spent time reviewing our proposition and looking at how we can improve the deals that we do with sponsors and how we can grow the commercial mobility of the club as a whole. In the week ahead we have our first Business Partner Reception at the club, this gives us an opportunity to show what a great organisation we have to current and prospective business partners. We have built our commercial programme on strong personal relationships in recent years and hope the outcome of our event will be new ones blossoming. I would personally like to extend a huge thank you to all business partners from the 2021/22 season, your support is appreciated by us all. I would also like to publically thank our hospitality team Andy & Evelyn Clay, Paula Robertson and Julie Clark who have set us apart from the rest in terms of welcoming officials of our sponsors, the FA, the League and our opposition this season, we really do appreciate everything you do for us. I would also like to thank our directors, our roles making the club tic behind the scenes is all made worth it when we see our fans walk through the gate on match day. As a collective, “the board”, put so much time into this club so it survives for the community! I am very fortunate that most of you know me or at the least recognise me so if you do have any questions about my role or the wider club do not hesitate to find me on a match day to have a chat. I wish Pete and boys all the best for this afternoon’s fixture, let’s get three points and have a beer in the sun after to enjoy the end to what has been a rollercoaster of season. Next year we go in carrying the immortal words of Bill Shankly “First you must believe you are the best, then make sure you are.” Positivity always, Daniel Dodson

Daniel

JW Match Report DIDCOT TOWN FC (A) 06-04-2022 SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Didcot Town2 St Neots Town 2 St Neots returned from Didcot with a deserved point but were disappointed to have conceded the equalising goal just three minutes from time. They had recovered well from giving away an early goal when they were harshly penalised by the award of the penalty against them after just seven minutes, but they showed a determined spirit to fight back to be on level terms at the break.Didcot had won 4-0 at the Premier Plus Stadium in the first meeting of the two sides this season last December but had recorded only one league victory in their last twelve outings so were desperate for points to halt their slide down the table. A swirling wind made conditions difficult for both sides who nevertheless produced a competitive contest with neither deserving to lose. St Neots had to make a late team change when striker Rob Mason contracted COVID 24 hours before the trip, so Saleem Akanbi came in for only his second start in to lead the attack whilst Kwai Marsh Brown was preferred to Glenn McConnell who dropped to the bench. Saleem Akanbi had a close range shot blocked in the first attack of the match but after seven minutes Didcot attacked down the right and a cross from Connor Barratt struck the arm of Aaron Smith from very close range and the Referee pointed to the penalty spot. Barratt himself struck a low shot beneath the diving body of Louis Chadwick to give the home side the early lead. Kwai Marsh-Brown was pulled down on route to goal at the other end earning a free kick that came to nothing and then George Jeacock brought a fine save from Chadwick as the contest continued end-to-end.Akanbi then headed narrowly over the bar from a Smith cross and the sides continued to swap attacking moves with a defender from each side picking up a yellow card easing the pressure on the respective defences. Akanbi scythed his way through the home defence but shot wide and then a minute before the break a Marsh-Brown low shot was blocked by a defender, but Joe Rider pounced to slide the ball home to level the scores. Deep into added time home keeper Leigh Bedwell produced the save of the match to deny Charlie Johnson. Didcot started the second half better and Chadwick had to save full-length to deny James Glover after a swift home attack. However, a really significant substitution for St Neots came in the 56th minutes when Glenn McConnell replaced Perry White and inside a minute, he had put St Neots ahead from a Marsh-Brown cross. St Neots then had a purple patch with McConnell prominent in almost every attacking move. Set up by Aaron Smith he forced Bedwell to a great save and then he brought a full length save from the home keeper and then rounded a defender to leave the keeper stranded, but Cameron McNeill got back to scrape the ball off the line. Marsh Brown went past two defenders to shoot narrowly wide and this spell of St Neots pressure should have produced what might have been a winning goal. However in the last ten minutes play became scrappy and sensing that St Neots were settling for their single goal margin, Didcot upped their game. The lively Barratt tormented the St Neots defence bringing a fine save from Chadwick but with three minutes left his low well-struck shot beat the keeper to claim the goal that saw the points shared. It could have been worse for St Neots for in time added. Barrett was only inches from his hat-trick with a free kick that grazed the wrong side of a goal post. Opponent Spotlight THAME UNITED FC- HISTORY Thame United FC Thame United was formed in 1883 making it one of Oxfordshires’ oldest clubs. Its early years were spent in Oxfordshire Leagues and in 1906, 1909 and 1910. Thame won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and the Senior League in 1907, 1908,1910, 1930 and 1931. A switch to the Hellenic League then brought further success culminating in the Hellenic League title in 1961-62 and 1969-70, as well as being runners up in 1960-61, 1976-77 and 1980-81. The Oxfordshire Senior Cup was won in both 1976 and 1981, but a poor spell in the mid eighties preceded a crossing of the pyramid in 1988-89 to join the South Midlands League. The Club finished runners up in both 1988-89 and 1989-90 before eventually winning the title in 199091. Thame received the green light to join the Diadora League in 1991/92. 1994-95 saw the Club win the Division 2 Championship with 93 points – an 11-point margin. In 1995/96, the Club reached the 3rd Round Qualifying in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. In the league we finished a creditable 13th in our first ever season in the Isthmian League Division One. Andy Sinnott was appointed first team manager in June 1997 and, with a dramatically reduced operating budget, the side were relegated into Ryman Division Two. The Club bounced straight back into Ryman Division One and reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase. 1999/2000 saw the Club come within two points of achieving promotion to the Premier Division. In the 2000/2001 season the team lead the way for most of the season, putting together a club record of 12 consecutive wins, but a slump in form in the latter part of the season resulted in a 5th place. A mid-table finish followed in 2001/2002 season but the Oxfordshire Senior Cup was retained. Mark West was appointed player/manager when Andy left United during the summer of 2003. In October 2003 the club reached the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in its history, before being beaten 1-2 by Conference side Farnborough Town. After a mid-table finish the Club moved to the newly formed Southern League, Division 1 West. In October 2004, the Club again reached the FA Cup 4th qualifying round and finished the season 11th in the league. Mark West left to join Slough and defender Tony Joyce was appointed player /manager. By July 2005, the Club was in financial trouble and, following a visit from Bailiffs acting on behalf of HMRC, the landlord enforced a clause in the tenancy agreement and evicted the club from Windmill Road. A ground share agreement was reached with neighbours Aylesbury United and, with the side struggling at the foot of the Southern League Division 1 West, Tony Joyce resigned in December 2005, with a new joint managerial partnership of Richard Searl and Alan Thorne appointed. Relegation to the Hellenic League was confirmed later in the season. A ground share agreement was reached with AFC Wallingford for 2006/07. Mark West returned to the Club mid-way through the season but could not save the Club from relegation to the Hellenic League Division 1 East. The 2007/08 season provided greater stability for the Club, with Mark West and new assistant, Frank Thompson, looking after first team affairs. A mid-table finish resulted, which was followed by a ninth placed finish in 2008/09. 2009/10 saw the Club win the Division 1 East title by six points and reclaim their place in the Premier Division. The 2010/11 season was the most significant in the Club’s recent history. With work on the new £3.1 million ground at Meadow View Park commencing in March 2010, United returned to Thame in December 2010, just over five years after theirforced eviction from the town. Boasting eight pitches, a floodlit 3G training pitch and a 8000 sq ft clubhouse, United now have one of the best sporting facilities in the Hellenic League. The official opening, against Oxford United in January 2011 saw a record crowd of 1,382. United finished the 2010/11 season in 10th place in the Premier Division
