Front cover - Image copyright protected by David Richardson, used under license. This afternoon we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Thetford Town Football Club and we hope you all enjoy our hospitality here today.
Today gives us a break from the rigours of League action as we return to action in the Isuzu FA Vase after our return to Step Five after quite a few years and we obviously hope that we can emulate the performances of fellow UCL club Newport Pagnell Town, reaching the Final at Wembley two years running and actually winning it in their first appearance at the home of the beautiful game. Today’s game will be a tough one with our visitors currently sitting in second place in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division with a very similar record to us this season.
This past seven days we have experienced the full rollercoaster of emotions, firstly the disappointments of losing at home to Eas our best performance so far at Histon on Tue easily have been more but for the woodwork saw the debut of Centre Back Mert Apat who recovers from his niggling injury and striker bench so please join us in welcoming both la travelling support at this game, absolutely fi I bet our hosts haven‘t heard that much nois urged the lads on for the full ninety minutes

"I’d like to welcome everyone associated to Thetford Town to The Premier Plus stadium. Our opponents today sit second and maintain an unbeaten start to the season with 7 wins and 2 draws so far this season. That is some start and they will come here full of confidence“.
Thetford Town manager Matt Morton has done a brilliant job with the club losing out harshly on promotion last year, I am sure they will be hoping to go one better this year but like all sides at our level, will have one eye on the opportunity to go to Wembley in this competition.
It’s been mixed fortunes in our last two league games, we felt the disappointment of defeat against Easington after creating countless chances before being hit with a sucker punch against the run of play and that did hurt, but we faired better travelling to Histon on Tuesday, which is no easy fixture and putting in arguably our most polished performance against a tricky Stutes side.
We are still finding our feet in terms of style and fluidity, have we had a good start to the season? Yes I’d say but we are no where near where we need to be in my opinion and we have identified key areas that we need to improve if we are to hang around at the top table in this division.
We are getting closer to a settled squad but fans will still see 1 or 2 new faces from time to time as I don’t want to stand still, I always want to improve the squad in the right way because we do have a core group who are immense and have already in my short time built a fantastic togetherness.
So today we begin our FA Vase campaign, everyone dreams of a trip to love to be the man to take the club there and to give our wonderful supporters a chance to celebrate, so we will be giving our all to go as far in the competition as we can.
Tuesday night’s great support was the extra push for the boys and I have no doubt today you will play your part in being the twelfth player.

FA VASE ROUND ONE
Long Melford 0 St Neots Town 2
A double substitution after 61 minutes by St Neots Manager Marvin Johnson proved to be the key to this FA Vase victory in Suffolk. He sent on Jon Hall for Nathan Eno and Jamie Steele for Pete Okechukwu and between them the substitutes contrived to turn a frustrating afternoon into a place in the next round of the National competition. Up to the change St Neots had dominated much of the play but failed to turn their superior possession into attempts on goal whilst the home side were largely content to soak up the pressure and hope that they could turn occasional attacking forays into goals. A large contingent of St Neots supporters who had travelled on a specially commissioned coach were just beginning to get restless when the opening goal came and from that point on there was only going to be one winner.
The first half was fairly even despite St Neots having the bulk of the play. Back in his holding midfield role Jon Hoggett orchestrated much of the movement with Matt Bannister and Luke Knight probing the home defence but chances were scarce. Bannister headed wide and Knight got the ball in the net after 26 minutes but was ruled marginally offside. Two good saves by home keeper Floyd Kroll from Declan Rogers’ free kicks were followed just past the half hour by Melford’s first serious attempt on the St Neots goal but Jon Chatfield saw Danny Brind’s shot pass just the wrong side of a post. Dean McElroy was enjoying some attacking freedom and he failed to get any power behind a near post header and then saw another effort rebound from the cross bar and that proved to the closest to a first half goal. The best effort by the home side was a volley by Richard Grimster that Chatfield saved comfortably.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Saturday 4th October 2008
Half time was the chance for reassessment and St Neots looked more positive upon the resumption. Dean McElroy again well advanced shot wide but after little progress was made Marvin Johnson made his changes. Almost immediately Jon Hall sent a rising shot just beyond the far post and after another smart move down the left Jamie Steele had the ball in the net but was judged to have fouled the goalkeeper. From another Jon Hall cross the ball was not cleared and the hard-working Matt Bannister opened the scoring with just eleven minutes remaining. The goal knocked any remaining resistance out of the host side and with four minutes left a pinpoint cross by Hall picked out the head of Jamie Steele and he claimed his first St Neots goal to clinch the victory.

John Walker's Match Preview
THETFORD TOWN - FA VASE
Year founded: 1883 Chairman: Nigel Armes Club Website: www.thetfordtownfootballclub.com
GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO THETFORD TOWN FOR THE FIRST MEETING OF OUR TWO SENIOR SIDES FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS (THE 1972/73 SEASON)
Thetford Town are long standing members of the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League, and they are enjoying their best start ever to a league season. As at last weekend they stood second in the league table three points behind leaders Lakenheath but with a match in hand. Club records show that out two clubs last met in senior competition in the 1972.73 season (details below) although our youth sides have met more recently. Thetford are probably glad that they have been drawn away today for their record this season shows that they enjoy being on the road. A quick glance at their record shows five completed away league which have earned them maximum points with fourteen goals scored and just four conceded. Contrast that with five completed home fixtures (one of these against Walsham-LeWillows last Tuesday after these notes were penned) with two draws and two victories plus a home defeat by Newmarket Town in the FA Cup. However, our visitors are enjoying a solid start to the season and have every chance of emulating their record last season when they finished runners-up to Ipswich Wanderers before losing to Barton Rovers in the promotion/relegation play-off match.
Previous meetings of our teams:
We met for four seasons whilst we were in the Eastern Counties League 1969/70 to 1972/73 (inclusive). Our last two league meetings were at Thetford where we drew 1-1 (our scorer was Chris Lightfoot) and here earlier that season when we drew 2-2 with Paddy Moore scoring both our goals.
Our U18 side played in the same division as Thetford in the 2021/22 season winning 14-1 at home and 6-3 away.
Enjoy the match.

Youth Team Match Report
Soham Town Rangers (H) 11-09-2023
Thurlow Nunn Youth League West Division
ST NEOTS U18 2 SOHAM TOWN RANGERS U18 0
St Neots made hard work of defeating bottom of the table Soham, but two second half goals were sufficient to see them extend their lead at the top of the table. More than an hour of the match had elapsed before the visitors managed their first shot at the home goal but despite clear dominance and possession, St Neots were unable to push home their advantage in the shape of a goal.
The visiting defence was not breached in the first half thanks to a combination of indifferent finishing and good fortune. St Neots were off target far too often once they got in sight of goal with visiting keeper Jacob Wiseman saving well from Will Jolley whilst Frankie Webster and Will Jolley were off target, and two defensive deflections also protected the visiting goal. An Asher Banton free kick was too high and as the first half ended visiting defender Lewis George cleared off the goal line to ensure parity at the break.
Early in the second half Adam Baker headed wide from a corner and Finley Morris saw a net bound effort deflected for a corner. After 64 minutes home goalkeeper Alex Bent was called into serious action for the first time to gather a free kick from Charlie Sutcliffe but two minutes later the long- awaited breakthrough occurred when a header rebounded from the Soham crossbar and substitute Nigel Coleman followed in to open the scoring. As Soham attempted to respond, James Leonard saw his shot deflected wide of the St Neots goal and after the visiting keeper had saved full length to deny Webster, the home side wrapped up the points with a 90th minute goal from substitute Rocco Smith to leave the home side two points clear at the top of the league table.

United Counties League Premier Division South
ST NEOTS TOWN 0 EASINGTON SPORTS 1
Following their recent disappointing league cup defeat at the hands of lower graded Clipstone, St Neots returned home to turn in their worst performance of the season. Beaten by a goal to nil by visitors Easington Sports, who recorded only their second league victory in eight outings this season, the home side were poor and even missed a penalty kick that might have afforded them a share of the points. The visitors arrived with a game plan that they executed to perfection soaking up home attacking before hitting back swiftly on the break and having snatched a goal around the hour mark they defended stoutly in numbers to stifle the St Neots attacking efforts – best described as ineffective! Visiting keeper Jack Myatt played well in goal saving a penalty kick and riding his luck at times, but St Neots with three of their regulars back from injury got what they deserved from this match – nothing. With James Hatch, skipper Kyle Lincoln and goalkeeper James Goff all back in the starting lineup, Tom Rowley was on the bench and Malaki Black not in the squad.
St Neots had the first real opening after ten minutes when Harvey Williams was upended on the edge of the penalty area but Sam Johnson’s free kick was blocked by the defensive wall. Jordan Brown then shot wide after neat play by Johnson, but after losing defender Elliott Barton to injury the visitors hit back with Josh Reilly shooting wide after being played clear by Chay Buckingham. Dean Dummett fired over the bar and then a well-placed free kick by Johnson was saved at full stretch by the visiting keeper. Williams burst through but fired over the bar and Brown had St Neots’ clearest chance, but his mishit shot was comfortably saved by Myatt. The final first half chance saw Reilly head over the bar for the visitors from a Joe Eyre corner.
John Walker's Match Report
EASINGTON SPORTS (H) 16-09-2023
After the break St Neots early opening effort saw Brown attempt to set up strike partner Hatch but he failed to connect with the cross and the chance went begging. After 56 minutes Williams was brought down inside the area resulting in the award of a penalty kick for the home side but Johnson’s effort was comfortably saved by the visiting keeper and within two minutes Easington broke clear and Joe Eyre lobbed the advancing goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead. In the next St Neots attack a Hatch close range effort was cleared off the line by a defender and when the tricky Williams was fouled within yards of the dug outs, the vociferous protests by St Neots Assistant Manager George Thorne saw him red carded by the Referee. Williams was assisted off with Tom Rowley substituting.St Neots continued to have the greater possession but made little positive use of it with Brown having a shot blocked and the same played sending substitute Matteo Perkins clear but he delayed his shot and was robbed by a defender. Magloire Muyembe and substitute Israel Ajana had shots comfortably saved by Myatt and despite having a player sent off in added time, Easington comfortably played out the rest of the match preserving their slender advantage to take all three points.

(John Walker)John Walker's Match Report
St Neots returned to winning ways to move up to third in the league table with a comfortable midweek victory at Histon. Two goals in each half summed up a contest that St Neots dominated with a late rally from the home side blunted by two excellent saves from visiting keeper James Goff. Injuries to two key players meant enforced changes for the visiting side because Harvey Williams and Nathan George had failed to recover from weekend injuries so into the side came Josh Brown after injury and new signing, tall central defender Mart Apat. It was perfect preparation for the upcoming weekend FA Vase tie at home to Thetford Town.
After an even start Marcus Cole saw Histon’s first serious effort diverted for a corner after six minutes, but St Neots were then into their stride as Jordan Brown went round a defender four minutes later to see his cross deflected into the net by Rob Ruddy to give the visitors the lead. The variation in tactics by St Neots with James Hatch through the middle and Jordan Brown operating wide gave St Neots a balance they had been lacking and then Magloire Muyembe shot narrowly wide after neat work by Josh Brown. Histon replied with sporadic attacks with Lewis Mair and Efraim Romanos failing to find a finish in front of goal. Six minutes before the break St Neots cemented their hold on the game when Sam Johnson finished off a neat move that had split the home defence.
Early in the second half an injury to Rav Kalek meant a reorganisation of the visiting defence with Tom Rowley substituting. Histon tried a mass reorganisation with the introduction of three substitutes but St Neots still controlled play with Rowley having a shot blocked and another 71st minute free kick effort by Johnson rebounding from the crossbar with the home keeper beaten. However, the pressure paid off and St Neots effectively sealed the points with a third goal two minutes later when the goalkeeper failed to gather the ball and Jordan Brown cooly slotted home to make it 3-0.

THETFORD TOWN
The club was founded in 1883. Up until the First World War Thetford played in the Norwich and District League. Because, at that time, Thetford was in both Norfolk and Suffolk, the club were able to enter both Norfolk and Suffolk County Cup competitions and in 1911 they won the Suffolk Junior cup.
After the first World War, Thetford played in both Norfolk and Suffolk Premier Leagues and won the Norfolk Senior Cup in 1948 and the Norfolk and Suffolk League Championship in the 1954/55 season. The boundaries were then altered and Thetford became part of the county of Norfolk. In the 1981/82 season, Thetford Town were runner’s-up in the Norfolk Senior Cup. In the 1989/90 season Town were runners-up in the newly formed Jewson League.
In 1990/91 Town had one of their best ever seasons, winning the Norfolk Senior Cup beating St.Andrews 4-3 in the final and reaching the Fourth round of the FA Vase.
Recent Times
After a poor spell for a number of seasons, the 2010-11 season was something of a turning point for the club as, after many years in the middle and lower reaches of the First Division Town finished fifth in the league. They also reached the final of the First Division Knockout Cup to cap a great season, although they were narrowly beaten in the final, going down 3-1 after extra time as Gorleston lifted the trophy.
2011-12 saw Town build further on the momentum of the last two seasons as they gained promotion to the Premier Division, under manager Mark Scott, finishing runners up behind Godmanchester Rovers on goal difference. There was double heartache as Town were runners up again, this time in the Norfolk Senior Cup. Again it was Gorleston who emerged victorious in front of 1,150 fans at Norwich City’s Carrow Road.

THETFORD TOWN
After maintaining the club’s Premier Division status for the following three seasons, early in the 2015-16 season, Thetford parted ways with Scott.
Danny White was appointed as the new player-manager in October. The rest of the season was a struggle as Town found themselves towards the bottom of the table, but ultimately stayed up.
The 2016-17 season was a vast improvement as Thetford finished in 7th place, the highest finish for the club for 26 years.
The next two seasons saw Thetford finish just below mid-table, following inconsistent campaigns.
However, Town reached a cup final in each season, firstly losing to Brantham Athletic in the Thurlow Nunn Challenge Cup, before a 2-1 AET defeat in the Norfolk Senior Cup final to Dereham Town at Carrow Road.
With most of the squad committing for the 2019-20 season and a few solid additions, hopes were high for the new campaign.
However, after winning their first game of the 2019-20 season the club went on an awful run of form that saw them lose ten successive league games.
After nearly four years at the club manager Danny White stepped down from his role. Matt Morton, who had been player-coach, stepped up to the manager’s job. Town were bottom of the league when he took over and was 16th when the league ended early due to covid
2021 present Matt Morton has had John Taylor ex Cambridge Utd player join him as First team coach. There is also a better stronger set up for the Reserves and an Under 18 team added to the thriving youth set up.
2022/23 Towns best season for 30 years playing some great attacking football ended up as runners up in the league to Ipswich Wanderers
