United Counties League Premier Division
ST NEOTS TOWN 6 YAXLEY 0
With the weekend visit of Kings Lynn very much in mind St Neots Manager had the luxury of resting six of his FA Vase team and able to give his squad players a good run out. They responded as he no doubt hoped as the side eased to a comfortable 6-0 victory over a very hard working and plucky Yaxley side. There was a senior debut for the most recent addition to the squad Dallas Moore and he marked his introduction with a set piece goal and there was also a first captains’ arm band for Lewis Webb who never stopped running for the entire 90 minutes and was duly rewarded with two goals. Leading 4-0 before an hour St Neots then introduced three substitutes and Junior Kanuda and Stefan Moore delighted the crowd with a display of exhibition football that led to two more goals to complete the rout. All in all it was a satisfactory run out in preparation to what is to be St Neots most important league match of the season in front of what is certain to be a record breaking attendance. With Newport Pagnell dropping points again for the second time in four days St Neots returned to the top of the table extending their goal difference to + 83.
St Neots were in the groove from the first whistle and could have been three goals ahead in the first seven minutes. From a Micky Hyem cross Roy Essendoh won the ball in the air but put it the wrong side of a post and then visiting keeper Aaron Bellairs made an excellent save to deny his second headed attempt from a Dan Jacob cross. Lewis Hilliard then had a thunderous shot blocked with the keeper out of position. Yaxley’s first and only serious first half attempt on goal came from the experienced Ricky Hailstone but he was wide of goal and with the possession very much in their favour it seemed that goals would soon arrive.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Saturday 1st February 2011
The first on 22 minutes was a real peach as the hard-working Shane Tolley won the ball on the edge of the centre circle and his clever flick anticipated the forward surge of Lewis Hilliard and his late curling shot was well outside the reach of Bellairs. Kieran Davies almost added a second with a narrow-angled shot that shaved the outside edge of the far post and the visiting keeper saved well from Tolley and Jacob. After 37 minutes a real team goal came as Theo Davis collected a pass from Dallas Moore and progressed infield from the left flank to find Dan Jacob and his low cross was forced home by ace marksman Shane Tolley. It was a first half of much one way traffic but credit to the visiting defence who were always competitive and tight.
Just ten minutes into the second half the excellent Bellairs made one costly slip when he dropped a stinging cross from Kieran Davies and Shane Tolley pounced for another typical strikers’ goal. Four minutes later it was 4-0 as Lewis Hilliard curled in a free kick won in the air by Jordan Gent. His header rebounded from the crossbar and Dallas Moore was on hand to open his account for St Neots. That signalled a change in tactics for the home side with a triple substitution and the introduction of Junior Kanuda, Stefan Moore and the evergreen Tony Scully. The game was slowed down as Kanuda weaved his spell around the Yaxley defenders and one shot from him brought the save of the match from Bellairs at the expense of a corner. Little was seen of the visiting attack and two goals in the last seven minutes delighted the St Neots followers. After 83 minutes Scully combined neatly with Stefan Moore who unselfishly picked out Lewis Webb at the far post and he celebrated with a clinical finish. Right on time the biggest cheer of the evening was for Junior Kanuda who mesmerised three defenders to set up Lewis Webb again for a narrow angled final goal.
St Neots: Trebes, Hyem, Davis, Webb, Gent, Moore (D), Davies, Hilliard, Essendoh, Tolley, Jacob.
Subs: Moore (S)(for Tolley 60 mins), Kanuda (for Essendoh 60 mins), Scully (for Davies 60 mins), Christon & McShane.
Man of the match: Theo Davis John Walker.

John Walker's Match Preview
YAXLEY FC
Year founded: 1962 Chairman: Malcolm Clements Club Website: www.yaxleyfc.com
GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR FRIENDS FROM YAXLEY
We accompanied each other in relegation from the Northern Premier League at the end of last season so our common goal now is to earn promotion back to the higher level. We have both made a promising start with the league table now showing Yaxley in fourth place and St Neots in second. Our visitors have a game in hand and are just two points below us, so it is very tight as we both aim to regain our place at Step Four in the National League System. However, there is still a very long way to go and when we meet again (return currently scheduled for 25th November) we shall be able to further assess our respective ambitions. Yaxley’s form has generally been excellent but their one league defeat to date came at home to Coventry United, but they have also bowed out of the FA Cup Wroxham (H), the FA Vase Eynesbury (H) and the League Cup Harrowby (A). In their last outing Yaxley played out a real close encounter with Aylestone Park eventually running out winners by the odd goal in seven so a goalless draw looks unlikely today! Below is detailed the record of the many meetings our two sides have had in the past 30 years so by now we should know each other well.
Previous meetings of our teams:
The records of matches between our two clubs since our reformation in 1994 makes interesting reading. Our two clubs have faced each other no less than 51 times in the past 30 seasons in a variety of competitions. We have met as follows:
The goals tally in those 51 matches is interesting – St Neots have scored 102 goals and Yaxley 79.
There have only been two goalless draws one at St Neots in 2009/10 and one at Yaxley in 2006/07.
Enjoy the match.

ST NEOTS TOWN U18 14 WISBECH TOWN U18 0
Playing against a depleted opposing team that turned up late for the match with just nine players, St Neots U18 side helped themselves to fourteen goals –seven in each half and it could have been many more but for some missed chances and a heroic performance by under-pressure visiting skipper/goalkeeper Josh Feeney. It was the third league meeting of the two sides and the result took St Neots’ tally to forty-nine goals scored with just one against. With almost half an hour gone St Neots led just 1-0 but then the floodgates opened with four goals in the final five minutes of the first half. The second half followed a similar pattern with just one further goal in the opening twenty minutes of the half but as St Neots utilised their substitutes the pressure told, and further goals followed. The best attacking efforts the visitors offered were two first half corners with home keeper Alex Bent not having a serious save to make throughout.
The Saints' goal scorers were:

THETFORD TOWN 0
Neots won 5-3 on pens)
This was St Neots’ first foray into the FA Vase since 2011 and after an evenly fought goalless 90 minutes, they prevailed to move into the next round of the FA Vase with a perfectly presented penalty shoot-out. Visitors Thetford Town arrived at St Neots with a flawless record away from home this season – five wins in five matches and St Neots knew this would be a stiff test. The match which was largely end-to-end, saw both sides create and miss numerous openings. The visitors shaded possession in the first half whilst St Neots were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure before hitting their visitors on the break, but their second half performance deserved their reward. The fact that home keeper James Goff was deservedly given the man-of-the- match award sums up the visiting side’s frustrations but there should also be a special mention for the St Neots defensive wall in front of the keeper that gave nothing away to a lively visiting attack. St Neots had an early problem when Rav Kalek broke down in the pre-match warm-up, so Malaki Black came in at full back. The only other team change saw Tom Rowley included for the cup-tied Jordan Brown.
Thetford created the first opening when after four minutes Adam Laker was given space at the far post, but James Goff parried his close-range shot. The match then settled with Thetford having the greater possession but creating few openings although Cameron King brought one important save from Goff after ten minutes. At the other end Magloire Muyembe revelling in his more forward role saw a net bound effort blocked and from a Sam Johnson cross, James Hatch uncharacteristically stabbed the ball wide. Goff then dived at the feet of Shaun Avis after22 minutes, but then play moved to the other end for Muyembe to dispossess a defender and force a full length save from visiting keeper Tom Smith at the expense of a corner. Laker then sliced through the home defence but shot wide and the first half ended with Tom Rowley shooting wide following a corner.
John Walker's Match Report
THETFORD TOWN (H) 23-09-2023
After the break Goff made a fine save to parry a shot from Callum Olpin and St Neots responded five minutes later when home skipper Kyle Lincoln headed narrowly over the bar from a Johnson corner. The match then took a turn with much of the play in midfield as St Neots began to look more confident and Archie Galley was booked for halting a promising attack by upending Josh Brown. Both sides sent on a substitute with Israel Ajana replacing Tom Rowley on St Neots left flank. As the match moved into the final ten minutes the visitors’ final effort from leading scorer King was comfortably saved by Goff and St Neots finished the stronger of the two sides with Ajana twice breaking through the visiting defence but failing to set up a colleague, and he was then cynically brought down and from the free kick Lincoln saw his close-range effort deflected for a corner.
The penalty shoot-out saw St Neots lead the way and they produced five near perfect spot kicks from Josh Brown, Sam Johnson, Magloire Muyembe, Tommy Reynolds, and Mert Apat, whilst Shaun Avis’ effort rebounded from a goalpost meaning than St Neots fifth spot kick saw then safely into the next round with a 5-3 aggregate.

HINCHINGBROOKE CUP ROUND ONE
MARCH TOWN 4
ST NEOTS TOWN 1
St Neots’ return to the Hinchingbrooke Cup competition after an absence of twelve years lasted just one match. Opting to make major team changes with six changes from their Saturday victory, St Neots paid the penalty as they were swept aside by a well-organised a determined host side also returning to the competition this season. March dominated the first half as the disjointed looking visiting side struggled to compete, and although St Neots were better after the break two goals in each half sealed a comprehensive victory for the home side.St Neots brought back Nathan George after injury and Jordan Brown after his cup tied absence, gave a first start to Matt Perkins and included Luce Ugarte-Edwards and Elliot Smith for their senior debuts.
A lightning start gave the home side two goals in the first nine minutes of the match to leave the visitors looking shell shocked. In their first attack March scored as Ben Seymour-Shove took full advantage of a defensive deflection to open the scoring and eight minutes later a Stefane Gavozzi cross was converted from close range by the same home player. The oneway traffic continued with Gavozzi dragging his shot wide and then James Goff and former Saint Matthew Foy were booked. With the returning Jordan Brown playing a lone role in attack St Neots best first half effort came after 29 minutes when he beat two defenders before firing across the face of goal from a narrow angle and just prior to half time home keeper Jonah Gill did well to parry a free kick.
After the break St Neots reorganised with Sam Johnson and Demi Romero on for Ugarte-Edwards and Perkins and they began to compete. However, they were hampered when Jordan Brown was sin-binned and during his absence Matthew Foy added a third March goal from a Seymour=Shove cross.

St Neots then had their best spell of the match ruined by a breakaway fourth goal for the home side claimed by Declan Rogers - another former Saint. St Neots then were reduced to ten men when Malaki Black was dismissed for a retaliatory foul, but they did snatch a consolation goal twelve minutes from time when Elliot Smith became the fifteenth player to score for them in just their fifteenth competitive match of the season.

RUGBY BOROUGH (A) 30-09-2023
RUGBY BOROUGH 2 ST NEOTS TOWN 3
After a poor first half St Neots recovered to take all three points thanks to a brace of second half goals from James Hatch. The host side who was promoted from Step Six at the start of the season had a decent home record on their 3G pitch with four wins from five outings and in the first half that record looked like being maintained. However, a defiant second half recovery was richly rewarded as the Saints dominated much of the second half to recover a half time deficit to go on to win. After the midweek cup match at March where several regular players were rested, Manager Cameron Mawer restored his regulars meaning that there were no fewer than six team changes. With regular goalkeeper James Goff unavailable, due to the imminent arrival of his first child his keeper’s jersey was handed to loanee Jack Galatis from Arlesey Town whilst in front of him skipper Kyle Lincoln, Rav Kalek and Josh Brown were included in the defence/midfield, whilst James Hatch and Sam Johnson returned up front.
From the start St Neots looked sharp and had much of the early play but failed to create a notable opening. Once the home team settled, they began to look the more threatening with visiting keeper Jack Galatis having to save smartly from Sam Lockley whilst Gerard McGahey and Adam Creaney squandered good openings. The home side took the lead when Rev Kalek was dispossessed on the edge of his own box and from the cut back, Sam Lockley had the freedom of the 18 yard box to roll the ball past Galatis into the unguarded net. St Neots were reduced to using long ball tactics to reduce the pressure on their defence but too many forward passes were either overhit or wayward and another effort by Lockley was parried by the visiting keeper. Needing to do something to spur his side, the St Neots Manager substituted midfielder Dean Dummett in the first half sending on Israel Ajana to add width and pace to the visiting attack, and this changed the pattern of the game. Two minutes before the break St Neots got back on terms. They won a free kick flighted in by Sam Johnson and full back Tommy Reynolds netted at the far post - his second goal of the campaign. However, parity only lasted for sixty seconds because from the restart an unstoppable volley by home skipper McGahey restored their lead.

RUGBY BOROUGH (A) 30-09-2023
With Nathan George on for Rev Kalek after the break St Neots looked better balanced and only a fine save by home keeper Jake Bull from Jordan Brown maintained his sides’ narrow advantage. Both sides made substitutions, but the important breakthrough came on 66 minutes when from a right sided cross from substitute Tom Rowley, James Hatch slotted home the important equalising goal. Now St Neots began to dominate, and Jordan Brown saw a net bound effort cleared off the line. There was concern when Hatch was brought down heavily, resulting in a second yellow card for Thomas but he was determined to limp on and eight minutes from time he was perfectly placed to claim what proved to be the winning goal after good work by Ajana and substitute Tom Rowley. The home side tried hard to find a late equaliser but the visiting defence marshalled by skipper Kyle Lincoln held firm to lift St Neots to second in the league table.

YAXLEY FC
The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902/03 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came about in 1950/51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950’s. The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues which, over the years have been sponsored and known by many names such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975/76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title. The 1983/84 season was a superb one with the first team winning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987/88 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season. 1993/94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994/95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the ill-fated West Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. The Reserves also won Division One of the same competition, thus emulating the feat of 1984/85. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. The ‘02/03 season saw the Reserve and Youth teams win the lion’s share of league and cup silverware whilst Jim Watson took over the management of the First Team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that are part of a five years objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) league.

Plans were also made to incorporate Yaxley Juniors and establish a new Ladies team to assist in creating a community orientated football club. The ‘03/04, 04/05 and 05/06 seasons have undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the 1st, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 06. The club has achieved FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g. new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled, and the project restarted in August ’06.
Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The 09/10 season was one of the toughest in the clubs’ history and against most of the league pundit’s opinions, Clippo and the lads pulled survival from the jaws of relegation. The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the First Team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18s and First Team. They finished mid-table and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup, the reserve team were runners up in the league and the league cup and the U18s were league champions and league cup winners (comprehensively beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds). All in all, not a bad season. 2013-14 saw the dismantling of the Reserve Side due to a lack of bodies to manage the team to an acceptable level and a brand new U18s team coming up from U16s football – a very tough season ahead. The First Team finished sixth in the league table—a highly commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing although we probably created a couple of new records in the process.
2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a fourth position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history compounded by an embarrassing County Cup Final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the clubs committee which was approved.

2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an exprofessional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley.
2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. 2015-16 was a disappointing one for the whole club but that was quickly forgotten. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive third place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle. 2017-18 saw our new Chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves.
Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the First Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club. ‘Fern’s led the club again to the league cup final (runners up) but more importantly to the league title and PROMOTION to the Evo-Stik SOUTHERN LEAGUE. On the back of a tremendous promotion season, in 2018/19 the Cuckoos looked to sustain their rise to Step 4 retaining the complete squad from the previous year whilst bolstering in a couple of areas. The Reserve was led by Lloyd Burton. At Step 4 we entered the Southern League Midland Division and had two seasons there, although because of the covid outbreak the second season was not completed but at the time the club was just above mid-table. 2021-22 began another new chapter after the FA reshuffle saw the club moved laterally to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, where they finished mid-table.
For 2022-23, the Cuckoos are looking forward to the challenge of this season, with a new younger squad and new additions to the management team, but still with the talented Andy Furnell at the helm

PLAYER PROFILES YAXLEY FC
Conor Barton (GK) – Charisma/c, lively and full of chat, great player to have between the sticks and is ALWAYS a voice on the pitch.
Ben Reynolds – Versatile Full back that can do a solid job in midfield. Decep/vely quick and always gives everything.
Katiti Hakuria – Internationally capped footballer in his younger days. Full back is FULL of running and has the loudest whistle ever heard.
Jay Chilvers (Captain) – Solid centre back and as the Skip he leads by example. Quietly goes about his business, but certainly delivers on the pitch. Pleased to get him in as lots were looking at him.
Finlay Henderson – “Hendo” has played under Robbo since he was 14 years old – a couple of setbacks with Injury and illness, but is becoming a very good CB, Heads everything. Plus, a really nice lad off the pitch too and that is a great quality in a player.
Ben Arnold – Solid, strong, energe/c Midfielder – Team DJ and one that will deffo be on the wind-up in the dressing room.
Rio Henson – Forward with Electric pace, with or without the ball. Very skilful and has an eye for goal, training at Step 2 pre-season so one to be good to keep.
Mark Baines – Mr Reliable – The most experienced player in the squad. Great vocally and is so good on the ball – really pleased to have him at Yaxley this season.
Ryley Barfoot-Nicholson – This Lad is unreal – should and WILL play higher. Looking forward to seeing him progress this season and beyond.
Matthew Harris-Hercules – Baller, song writer, singer and probably has more hidden talents not yet shared. Great insincive goal scorer and another tricky player.
Fayed Rahman – Former Pro academy player – midfielder that can play anywhere and in any formation. Unselfish and a very clever player.
Seb Darnell – Central Midfielder that does not stop – Copper coloured top so could nickname him Duracell – he may hate that when he reads this.
Julinho Gomes – Ex Cambridge Utd Forward – an eye for goal – very quick and strong and will be a great one for the fans to follow.
Lil Francisco – Really talented Full Back – skilful, quick and LOVES the mirror. Fancies himself as a boxer, model, and celeb status is guaranteed (in his own mind anyway)
Samuel Brooks – Strong and experienced CB, good on the ball and doesn’t shirk a challenge. Another great lad to have around.
Jordan Venters – Quick and agile Centre Back that covers a lot of ground. Been injured pre-season so will come back into things soon.

Leo Brando – Probably the quickest in the team, lea sided player that will cause lots of problems – took last year out of football to concentrate on a career (and women) but once fully ready he will be a handful.
Kelton Stringer – Lucky to get his signature, and glad he joined amidst interest from other big clubs. A real presence in the centre of midfield and gets a fair few goals too.
Jez Goldson-Williams – “Experienced” striker that will certainly work a back four, always puts his body in and never gives up – apparently has great music taste – yet to be seen.
Dawid Kowalski (GK) – Last year at Yaxley and has again decided to stay on and battle for the number one spot, great shot stopper and will deffo push Conor for the shirt.
Loui Catt – Played under Robbo since he was 10 years old albeit a year out last season at Warboys. Fit, Strong, quick, scores goals and defends well. Catty is a great versatile addition to the group as he can play anywhere lea or right.
Isaac Kyreme – Young Isaac has been thrust into step five following some good reviews after his time in the lower leagues – he is a raw talent that we had to have involved. Only young but WILL be one to watch.
Sam Adams - THE fittest player in the team – will just keep running – very quick and has a great delivery too – very deceptive player and will be another that causes defences issues down the right.
Quincy Otunba (GK) – Experienced Goalkeeper that has moved to the village of Yaxley. Great hands, great distribution and will also be pushing for the number one spot.
