s so many people eagerly set off for their holidays abroad this summer, it’s easy to forget that Southsea was once a very fashionable, Victorian holiday destination. Originally called Croxton Town after a land owner, the resort grew and eventually adopted its name from Southsea Castle, there were even extra railway stations to deliver holidaymakers as close to the seafront as possible. There’s plenty of 19th century photos available, in books and online, of thousands of holiday makers all over Southsea, all looking very sombre, dressed in heavy dark suits or long layered dresses. The Queens Hotel would have been an iconic building at the time, but I think the Victorians would have been foxed by the idea of Sunday Sessions (p.8). Bi-fold doors would have been a complete mystery, see Welcome Home (p.12) And as for Daniel Nowland’s cookery piece (p.44) I’m not sure how many of the ingredients would have been so available as they are now? But the vision of thousands of people descending on Southsea is still with us, with Victorious just around the corner, but I don't think there will be too many heavy suits or layered long dresses worn and certainly no sombre faces! Have a gorgeous summer everyone. Kevin John Dean

General Manager Paul Playford, said: “We have made a major investment in our garden as part of the overall rejuvenation of the Queens Hotel, and we are looking forward to welcoming people to enjoy the space throughout the summer. “There’s nothing nicer than being able to relax in the sunshine on our comfortable garden sofas, sipping a drink and sampling our delicious garden menu,” he said. Being in the fortunate position of having such a glorious outdoor space for guests and visitors to enjoy, the hotel wanted to make the most of the garden so everyone can fully enjoy it. Designer Lorien Loten from Garden Angel was commissioned to work her magic on the grounds. Her design has seen the creation of 15 garden areas with Mediterranean style planting, where you and your friends can unwind and enjoy special times. When it came to creating the perfect entrance to the re-styled garden, the Queens Hotel knew immediately who they should call on to make their set of gates. The team at Peter Clutterbuck’s Design Blacksmiths are based just a stone’s throw from the hotel and their distinctive work can be seen across the city. They were responsible for making the bandstand on Southsea seafront and the beautiful statue at Daedalus airfield as well as many other examples of gates and railings across the city and beyond. Garden designer Lorien, said: “We are so lucky to have Peter and the team on our doorstep, and when it came to creating an eyecatching set of gates for the garden, they were number one on our list. 10

“They were able to interpret exactly what we wanted and turn the drawings into a reality,” she said. The gate was fashioned by hand from mild steel and it took a month to complete the construction. “Being so close to the Queens Hotel, it was nice to be able to create the gates for the garden. It’s such a lovely design by Nigel Searle and we really enjoy working on projects like this,” said John Duffield, who worked on the gates with Patrick Mannerings. Groups of 10 or more who want to reserve a space in the garden should contact our events team on events@queesnhotelportsmouth.com and check out details for our Sunday Sessions here https://queenshotelportsmouth.com/whats-on/ Keep an eye on the Queens Hotel’s social media platforms for details on more events and check out our plans for Christmas.

COOL IN EVERY SENSE… Words: Kate Thompson. Photos: Fry & Kent

O

n the hottest day the UK has ever experienced, there was no cooler place to be than Sophie and Talbot’s glorious Southsea home.

Ornate plasterwork on the ceiling of the sitting room and a gorgeous over the top fireplace underline that this was an important home for an important man.

Their spacious garden flat with subterranean rooms below was cool in every sense. Crisp white walls teamed with an uncluttered approach to living and a confident sense of style, make for a perfect combination.

Sitting in the dining area, chatting to Sophie, my eye is continually drawn to the Lincrusta Walton raised relief wallcoverings that are the mark of a fine Victorian home. The detailing is delicate and sublime — a true mark of quality.

Far from being too clinical in their approach, Sophie and Talbot have embraced the original features of their home and ramped up the glamour to create a home that perfectly marries the best of Victorian craftsmanship with a contemporary feel.

Looking at Sophie’s petite frame it’s hard to imagine her navvying but that’s exactly what she did when she and Talbot took on the task of developing the basement area — where originally the servants would have slept.

Built in the 1880s for the architect who designed it and several other homes in this stylish corner of Southsea, he certainly didn’t stint on the finishing touches.

“When we bought the flat we could see the potential to extend the living space and were able to do so by opening up the ‘other half’ of the basement, with the

12

creation of two more rooms. When the house was built this area had been backfilled with rubble and debris — I can’t tell you how many bags I took out, or how many bags of ballast I took down there,” she laughed. Having moved in 22 years ago, the flat has evolved over time. The dark wall colours have gone, valuable storage has been added and a real flair for design has seen the flat become the beautiful space it is today. Sophie happily recalled how she, Talbot and their two children lived in the front room at one stage and what some would have seen as a challenge became an adventure. Unafraid of tackling structural work, the couple reconfigured the ground floor space to create a grand bathroom, hallway and spacious kitchen with bi-fold doors to the beautiful garden. “It’s all about opening up the space and not being afraid to think big. When it comes to things like doors, we went big and upscaled,” she said. An extension meant they could create a kitchen that sits over the footprint of the original conservatory with a delightful encaustic tiled floor. Marble with wispy,

grey veining is included in the kitchen and bathroom to great effect. Being such large rooms, Sophie explained it called for a confident approach and larger pieces of furniture. “We’ve got used to the size and scale of the rooms but it does mean you need to upscale and position furniture so you are making a bit more of a statement,” she said. Listening to Sophie, it becomes clear there is a clarity of purpose behind the design she and Talbot have created for their home. “Obviously there are endless external sources of inspiration — architects and buildings (Le Corbusier, Mies van de Rohe — Barcelona Pavilion), Grand Designs, Elle Decoration and Living Etc; but what I feel has been most important is the internal (personal) inspiration in terms of how one wants to live — to be and do; what one finds beautiful; and the transformation and elevation of the day-to-day to make all days a bit of a holiday — a source of joy and inspiration, and an adventure in terms of its undertaking and creation.

13

“Hence the neutral palette for the backdrop, and need for storage — to ensure spaces are light and airy, decongested and uncluttered. “So what's in those spaces (objects and occupants) can breathe — like my trees (Sophie thinks nothing of climbing into her trees and ‘decluttering’ there too with some judicious pruning so the tree can breathe and be beautiful too). “I truly believe that a thing of beauty is a joy to behold and I have wanted to create, and share, a lot of joy — we have had so many beautiful parties through the years with children’s birthdays, Christmas and Easter and dinner parties,” she said. When it comes to choosing her favourite room, Sophie admits to being torn. She loves the kitchen and garden with the in/out vibe and very green view; and the lounge is undoubtedly spectacular with its huge fixed mirrors in the alcoves, moulded ceiling and carved Italian marble fireplace. “But I also love our bedroom — it has a calm beauty and is a sanctuary-like quiet space away from the world (literally — being in the basement) — with the gold panel backdrops to the wall lights and a wall of mirror behind the bed.

14

“I also love the four reclaimed columns with carved heads that we used to frame, and so match, the mirrors in both the bath and shower rooms; and all our urns and mirrors.” Summing up what her home means to her, Sophie added: “I count myself very fortunate to have worked part-time since having children — Elias and Ines (a tough choice financially but for us a no brainer in all other respects). “And so my family and home, rather than career, have been/are my life’s work — providing a much needed creative outlet and opportunity to make our own thing of beauty — our own bubble/world within the world (something that I have appreciated and enjoyed all the more with children, and working from home these last 12 years). “And while I like to think that I have ‘put the heart into our home’ — and it has been me doing the talking in this interview — it has obviously been very much a collaboration with Talbot. It has to be said, he is equally appreciative of and driven by good design, is very ‘handy’, has made things work, and is the very best painter/decorator out there. And now it’s time to let go and shake it all up — for a new adventure and a new bubble...”

CLUBS & SUNSHINE Neil Maxwell

W

e have some outstanding properties on the market at the moment, one of which is the premises of the former Royal Naval Club & Royal Albert Yacht Club. The Club had been struggling with membership for several years and the COVID downturn, was as for many hospitality venues was the final straw, despite the gallant efforts of several board members.

The history of the club is an incredible tale. The current premises in Pembroke Road were opened in 1867 following the purchase of a tavern called the Three Tuns and the premises of the Hampshire Bank. The fronts of both buildings were removed and replaced by the current frontage unifying both buildings and adding the tower. This was initially paid for by a group of naval officers who recognised the need for officers and their ladies to be able to have entertainment away from Naval establishments. The Royal Naval Club subsequently merged with the Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club and then the Royal Albert Yacht Club of which Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was a founding member, their racing yachts being distinguished by a green painted hull.

16

The story goes that Royal Naval Officer Club members returning on their warships would make a signal to the club as they entered Portsmouth Harbour with their meal requests. The officers would then arrive for lunch once their ship was safely alongside in the Royal Dockyard. There has been much interest in the building including international enquiries, with several different parties interested with various plans including conversion to residential premises. The closing date for tenders is in early August. Elsewhere the market is entering the time of year where many people’s thoughts are on holidays rather than houses and its been a pleasure to see the seafront so active given the recent warm weather with many hundreds of people enjoying large family barbeques. The activity levels remain good, and the numbers of properties being sold and rented is consistent with previous years. Meanwhile, I’m sat in the office wondering what to have for lunch, but if I order something in advance, I think I’ll just use my mobile phone.

PROMOTING WELL-BEING IN SCHOOLS Jane Prescott, Headmistress of Portsmouth High School

P

ositive health and well-being are important to maintain and never more so than at school. Children spend approximately 190 days a year at school which accounts for much of the year, and therefore educational establishments must consider how they promote well-being to students and staff. The last two years have been tough for everyone, but none more so than children whatever their age. They have missed socialising and attending those rites of passage events such as their prom or special trips and visits. They have not experienced normality and if schools are not proactive in helping young people navigate these testing times then it could lead to greater problems later. Schools must advocate a healthy lifestyle — this ranges from getting enough sleep to eating the right foods and exercising. It also includes gaining a perspective on what being happy means. Social media shows the life of those who post as interesting and exciting. The reality is often far from this perspective. Gaining a balance is important. Children show anxiety in certain circumstances and schools may help by introducing scenarios early on. For example, giving opportunities to speak to large and small groups — in class or to a whole year group. Children worry about failing and then will not risk answering questions in class, and creating a culture that allows them to be curious and feel confident is important. Many schools have a dedicated space where pupils may go if they are feeling anxious or generally unwell. At Portsmouth High School we are opening this September a well-being centre called Daffodil House. In this one area

32

there will be resources which support health, and in particular mental health. Pupils are keen to work with each other providing mutual assistance. It is important to be proactive rather than reactive. Finding sports that children enjoy is crucial to participation. Traditional team games are not for all, and including individual sports helps all children become involved and feel included. Even at a young age it is important not to discourage children from exercise. Some schools have a daily walk round the playground as the children arrive in the morning and pupils join in the activity at any point. If schools are able to provide a central area for eating lunch this creates a culture which supports positive eating habits. Food technology or cookery lessons also provide for an opportunity to learn about different food groups and how to cook recipes from scratch. Those schools that have an area for growing vegetables find engaging children in producing fresh produce also promotes healthy eating. Children are much more likely to try food they have grown. Some traditional activities have been lost to the allure of screens. Schools promote reading and introduce the joy of sitting quietly with a book from quite a young age. This not only develops creativity and language but also is a distraction from social media and digital devices. Young people face pressures – examinations, friendships, navigating the modern technological world, and now the recent pandemic. This makes it more important than ever that schools take a proactive approach to helping pupils manage these challenges to develop healthy habits for healthy lifelong living.

We are celebrating a year in Southsea having had a fun year in Milton Village Hall, with a few new classes springing up. Our Strawberry Tinies have gone from strength to strength, and it is hard to tell who enjoys it more, the adult or the child, and the children have become quite confident galloping in partners with little people now, what a big step!.

Our ballet classes have gone from strength to strength where the magic of the art and the passion has become contagious. We are hoping to take our pupils to perform in a nursing home and put smiles on the residents’ faces. Our Wimbledon School of 35 years has had so many recent exciting successes, including our recent successes with the London Children’s Ballet and Anne of Green Gables, a recent National Youth Ballet success, and three of our pupils have gained entry into the Royal Ballet School. Our Vocational Girls just got their intermediate exam results, which were distinctions and merits, which we are very proud of. 34

which can help when choosing who to value your property and instruct. To create the guide, Property Academy and Rightmove check and rate every estate agency branch in the UK. These are scored against a unique set of performance and customer service criteria using a combination of data analysis and mystery shopping. To inform the guide, Property Academy surveys thousands of buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants each year to better understand their opinions and expectations of the home buying, selling and renting process.

GUIDE BACKGROUND

On its website: bestestateagentguide.co.uk Property Academy says: “With an estimated 25,000 estate agency branches in the UK,

we know it can be difficult to choose and there is a lack of independent and trustworthy information to help you compare agents and find the best in your area. “This is why we decided to produce the Best Estate Agent Guide. “After twelve years of listening to the voice of the consumer and using the insights to inform estate agency businesses of the latest trends, opinions and opportunities, we decided to compare estate agents in order to provide the millions of people who sell or let their property each year in the UK with an independent and credible source of information to help them find the best estate agent for them.” Needless to say, all here at Chinneck Shaw are naturally thrilled with this prestigious industry recognition.

HERBIES TOP TIPS FOR CUTTING FOOD COSTS

A

s food prices rise, the natural inclination is to seek out the supermarkets for cut price deals. But there is another, possibly more wholesome alternative. Jim Harbridge talks about what his health food shop, Herbies has to offer: “I think people assume our products are expensive or only for vegans, but in fact we cater for all diets and by shopping wisely we think our foodstuffs are better value than any supermarket. For example, we sell a kilo of top quality porridge oats, for £1.40 which is a great way to start the day, or some very tasty tinned curries for

about £1.60 which, served with rice will serve 2 - 3 people, also perfect for camping. And how about some nuts and seeds for snacking? Or make a big chilli or spag bol with some soya mince for £2.24. And if it’s convenience you are after, we sell nut roasts or soya sausages to pop in the oven. Plus, customers can make savings by bulk buying essentials, such as a case of oat milk or a 5 litre detergent bottle, something you can’t readily do at a supermarket. “We also stock some great laundry products and toiletries which are good for our customers and good for the planet, and if people bring a suitable container, we can cut the packing costs such as Bio D laundry liquid, , which will save you over a third of the price for a refill. Our popular Faith in Nature range will save you over a quarter of the original price if a customer brings a refill bottle. And if people can’t get to the shop or they are shielding, we deliver to people’s homes, free of charge,” said Jim. “Without sounding too preachy, we need to find a way of reducing our plastic packaging and moving away from unhealthy convenience food. In many ways, I think we are setting the trends for the big food retailers, and if it helps the planet and people’s health I don’t mind in the slightest,” said Jim with a big smile. PRAISE BE FOR PASTA Words: Daniel Nowland

R

ight now we are being overwhelmed with the “rising cost of living”. This is likely to affect all of us in some way, whether it’s the cost of fuel, food, or domestic bills. With that in mind I wanted to touch on ways in which we can still eat very well, without having to shell out a lot of money. For me, the answer regularly lies in pasta!

Even if the cost of buying pre-made pasta has gone up, it is still likely to be a very affordable way of eating well. You also have the choice to save more money by making it yourself, or trade up to a more premium product, which is still economical. I now stock some incredible pasta in the deli which is made in Yorkshire! The wheat is from the North of England and the pasta is made by hand in Yorkshire, and quite honestly, it is the best dried pasta I’ve ever tasted. The beauty of pasta is you have the ability to transform it into any type of meal from the ridiculously simple to the super extravagant. I would love to share with you a few of my favourite recipe ideas which cover all of these bases.

I For a super simple dinner, cook 75g dried pasta per person (the best you can afford) and when cooked, toss with extra virgin olive oil, Parmesan and black pepper. To turn this into something more luxurious, drizzle with truffle oil and top with fresh rocket and yet more Parmesan. 44

I For a cheap meaty option, squeeze the sausage meat out of a pack of quality pork sausages. Add the meat to a frying pan, along with a tablespoon of fennel seeds. Allow to cook low and slow for around 30 minutes, stirring and breaking up the lumps every now and then. Add a splash of good vinegar (or not so good wine), and allow to cook off. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes and allow to cook for a further 10 minutes. By adding 300g pasta (dry weight), cooked and drained to the sausage pan, you will have a delicious dinner for four. as peas or runner beans. I add these veg to the pasta water half way through the pasta cooking time. That way you can drain it all at once, and you only use one saucepan. Return the pan to a low heat, stir through some creme fraiche, grate in some lemon zest, seasoning, a cheese of your choice and top with a fresh herb such as mint or dill, and a little more cheese. Enjoy!

I

If, like me, you end up with random off cuts

of vegetables in your fridge which run the risk of being wasted, these can create wonderful pasta dishes with a few simple tricks. I like to roughly chop leftover raw veg such as broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and kale. If you are low on these, you can throw in frozen veg such 45

SAM’S PLACE UPDATE

Southsea Lifestyle talks to Anne Yendell manager of Sam’s Place about the pleasures and pressures of running a charity shop.

“C

harity shops might seem relatively easy places to set up and run, but they come with just as many challenges as a regular retail operation. The challenges might be different, but ultimately it’s all about making enough profits to support our local Samaritans branch, Portsmouth and East Hampshire. We are entirely dependent upon the generosity of the local community to donate good quality stock that other members of the community might want to buy. Plus we rely upon our amazing volunteers to either sort and tidy donations in the back room, or to display the goods and sell them,” explained Anne. Sheila Besant who has volunteered at Sam’s Place for 2 years joined the conversation,”I really enjoy working here, you meet a lot of people, I like clothes and the displays are very imaginative. Plus it’s good to give back to the community.” “Yes, we are very proud of our displays,” continued Anne. “We took a lot of trouble with the design of Sam’s Place — from introducing a simple, colour coded pricing system, to giant clothes hangers and a wrought iron ’tree’ for our in-store display. And we feel as though it’s paid off, as the shop always looks great and we are delighted to report that 2021/22 has been our best year yet. It's a huge achievement and it is literally down to all the local support we continuously receive. “Designing and opening the shop just seems

a short time ago, but in fact, we will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary later this year. “In a world so beset with problems, from the ramifications of the cost of living crisis, to the effects of COVID, along with so many personal issues that people have to deal with, Samaritans Portsmouth and East Hampshire has been very busy providing a listening service for all those who need support. Therefore, Sam’s Place, fundraising for our branch, is more important than ever, so please do continue with your help. “We also hope to start our community events in the autumn as we have many requests to start these again,” said Anne. If you would like to volunteer at Sam’s Place , please do pop on and find out more or calls us on 023 92821199.
