VEGEPOLYS

Vegepolys is a cluster located in the Western part of France in Angers. It focuses on plant production and includes 400 members (companies, training centers and research centers). Florentaise is the French leading company on the Substrate market for both professionals and hobbyists. It is a 100% family-owned business with 200 employees.

Since the beginning of the 2000s, Florentaise has focused on producing the least possible impactful substrate. One way to reduce the environmental impact of substrate is to use renewable raw material. Most substrate around the world is made of peat moss, which is a non-renewable raw material that take 1,500 years to renew. Florentaise developed different raw material to partially or totally replace peat moss in substrate. We developed Hortifibre, a patented wood fiber that reduces the use of peat in substrate by 50%. We have also launched Turbofibre, a patented bark fiber to completely replace the use of peat in substrate. ***

Since 2007, Florentaise has been selling Hortifbre internationally. In 2017, we produced more Hortifibre abroad (800,000m3) than the total volume of Substrate we sell in France (650,000m3). Depending on the local availability of pine wood, we either export dried and compressed wood fiber in countries without wood or set up hortifibre production plants in our customer’s factory when sufficient pine wood is available. Today we have 10 factories in France, 2 in the UK, 1 in Estonia, 1 in India, and 1 in China. In 2016, we acquired a company in the US. Florentaise philosophy is that 40% of what we are doing today, we did not do 5 years ago. So 40% of what we will do in 5 years, we are not doing today therefore we must discover it.

This philosophy led Florentaise to develop new markets and technology, especially in urban agriculture. We developed the first and biggest vertical farm in France.

We also have a whole range of urban substrates (the lightest substrate available) capable of growing fruit trees on roofs. Finally, we are launching a new range of products (dry substrate, adaptable LED lighting, easy germination kits) to allow individuals living in cities to grow food in apartments.

L'Institut de Recherche en Horticulture et Semences (IRHS) a été créé à Angers en janvier 2012 sous la tutelle de l'INRA, d'AGROCAMPUS OUEST et de l'Université d'Angers. Située au cœur d'un bassin européen de productions horticoles et de semences dans la région des Pays de Loire, elle rassemble la majeure partie des forces de recherche en sciences végétales. Cette unité mixte de recherche compte environ 235 membres dont 175 permanents et mène des projets de recherche en relation avec la qualité et la santé des productions du végétal spécialisé. Les plantes ornementales, fruits et légumes, graines et agents pathogènes (bactéries et champignons) en sont les principaux modèles d'étude.

Cette unité mixte de recherche met en place des approches globales basées sur son expertise en génétique, en épigénétique, en génomique, en pathologie, en physiologie, en écophysiologie, en biochimie, en modélisation, en statistique et en bioinformatique. Elle dispose de plusieurs installations expérimentales et des plateformes techniques.

The Research Institute in Horticulture and Seeds (IRHS) was created in January 2012 in Angers, under the supervision of INRA, AGROCAMPUS OUEST and the University of Angers. Located in the heart of a European basin of horticultural productions and seeds in the "Pays de Loire" region, it gathers the major part of the research forces in plant sciences. This joint research unit has approximately 235 members, including 175 permanent staff and carries out researches in relation with the quality and health of horticultural crops. The laboratory sets up comprehensive approaches based on its expertise in genetics, epigenetics, genomics, pathology, physiology, ecophysiology, biochemistry, modeling, statistics and bioinformatics. UpCycle, plus connue sous son nom commercial La Boite à Champignons, conçoit, exploite et diffuse des modèles d’agriculture urbaine circulaire.

Depuis 2011, nous transformons chaque semaine 5 Tonnes de marc de café en pleurotes, dans une logique 100% circulaire. Nos substrats de culture sont revendus après récolte aux acteurs de l’agriculture urbaine en bacs.

Depuis 2016, nous développons un nouveau système à partir du compostage chaud : ce système nous permet de récupérer tous les biodéchets d’un site, pour les transformer en 2 semaines en compost, puis cultiver dessus des fruits et légumes.

Nous avons également lancé une activité conseil : nous créons des fermes urbaines circulaires dans des caves, en associant différentes briques de production : pleurotes, micropousses, endives, compost, bacs potagers sont développés en interne, et avec des partenaires exploitant pour l’hydroponie, les insectes, les algues,… *** UpCycle, also known as La Boîte à Champignons, develops circular agriculture systems for towns, companies and individuals who wish to produce great food from waste.

We’ve designed 2 circular systems: Every week, we transform coffee waste into mushrooms and microgreens, and bio-waste into vegetables.

We run an urban farm close to Paris. From the farm, we deliver many products and services.

We are a zero-waste company. We sell different products and services at any stage of the production including exhausted mushroom subtracts sold to urban farmers to create productive soils.

Business France Business France is the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy, responsible for fostering export growth by French businesses, as well as promoting and facilitating international investment in France. French industry policy to stimulate economy and strengthen R&D A new tool for a most efficient and competitive industry in France was launched since July 2005 when the French Government selected 69 projects as competitiveness clusters.

The competitiveness cluster policy aims to create synergy between companies, public and private research units, academic institutions, in order to establish working relationships which develop an environment of cooperation and promote partnerships within innovative projects. Researchers and business enterprises are mobilized, within a public/private sector partnership, to work on new projects, resulting in innovative advances, economic efficiency and job creation, and which should enable those players involved to attain leading positions in their field. It is a part of French efforts to reach 3% of R&D expenses in the GDP, according to the European “Lisbon Strategy”.

The competitiveness clusters are addressing the technological sectors with higher impact on French economy: information and communication technologies, energy and environment, health related technologies, biotechnologies, aeronautics and transportation, food industry.

A competitiveness cluster is an organization which brings together the best players in their field, small or large, where each participant can benefit from access to the following: • Leading players in their field.

• Top level researchers.

• Qualified personnel.

• Public financial support to encourage innovative projects, in the best possible conditions.

Moreover, due to their international vocation, the competitiveness clusters facilitate: • The setting up of foreign business enterprises who benefit from this technological environment; • The creation of international research teams; • The development of technological partnerships with companies and research centers of foreign clusters.

The success of this innovative industrial and country planning policy is contributing to the favorable orientation of French economic indicators: improvement of the economic growth, new positive level of manufacturing investments and rise of R&D expenditure.
