01 CRITICAL SELECTIVE READING The city

Barcelona is a city on the coast of northeastern Spain. It is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia, as well as the second most populous municipality of Spain. With a population of 1.6 million within city limits, its urban area extends to numerous neighbouring municipalities within the Province of Barcelona and is home to around 4.8 million people, making it the fifth most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, the Ruhr area, Madrid, and Milan. A city with fascinating and unique characteristics! This is due to its history and its transformations, urban, economic, environmental levels, making it a city that values users, urban space and vegetation, resulting in an urban model that has come to be called the Barcelona model of urbanism. The present form of the city with its natural elements, buildings, parks, gardens, squares and streets notably influences its own microclimate. In the last 40 years, the city has invested in elements of infrastructure, reorganisation of streets leading to an increase of vegetation, remodelling of sidewalks and urban spaces and creation of spaces open to users like rivers and beaches, among other endeavours. This has generated a modernised city where the main elements are the user and his or her needs. Barcelona, with a latitude of 41° North, has a Mediterranean climate. It is characterised by seasons marked with air temperature with an annual average of 16° and global radiation in the horizontal plane of 174 W/m2.

The Neighborhood

Barcelona currently counts 10 districts, some of which, have a previous history as independent municipalities which were integrated into the city of Barcelona during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Hence, HortaGuinardó is one of the oldest districts, and is mainly known as “lungs of Barcelona”. Horta-Guinardó, Spain is located at 41.41849 latitude, 2.1677 longitude at an average elevation of 166 meters, is the third largest district in Barcelona. An area with a rural past and abundant vegetation, it provides some surprising views from the many viewpoints in its neighbourhoods. Horta is considered “lungs of Barcelona” due to the presence of many parks, open spaces, and green areas. Its one of the few dictricts that hasnt been affected by the late industrialism and capitalist urbanism. Therefore, makes a perfect location for a “micro - town” with a proper sustainable development. The site of is placed in the heart of Horta, and meets all the requirments, for a sustainable living, including social, technological, economical and environmental aspects.

The Site

The site is placed in the heart of Horta and as it hosts many parks, open spaces, and green areas, it meets all the requirments, for a sustainable living, including social, technological, economical and environmental aspects. Therefore, this particular site makes a perfect location for a “sustainable micro-town” with a proper sustainable development.

The Project

The project tends to create a specific habitat for people of different ages and generations in multi dimensional ways, and aims to break the stereotypes of each group of people in a shared environment, always following a sustainable development.

02 CONCEPT and STRATEGY Concept of ‘between ages’ Main Strategies Design Process

CONCEPT The concept of this project relies on multi dimensions that are clashing and merged within each other. Starting from the very specific location of the site in Horta, Barcelona and its authentic elements that make the place and environment a proper dwelling base. Then focusing on the main actors, people, which are simultaneously in contrast but in harmony with each other, the elderly and the students. As known, the world’s becoming older and older each year and as such the complexity of generations especially in terms of housing and everyday life, keeps increasing. Therefore this project tends to create a specific habitat for people of different ages and generations in multi dimensional ways, and most importantly on how to break break the stereotypes of each group of people in a shared environment. The composition of functions on the site sticks to this idea whereas each element plays an important role in the design itself, inside the site and outside it. There are four main dimensions that drive the site towards the surrounding and the city, a challenging advantage of the environment and its complexity of the topography and landscape, a well structured mobility system of new roads and soft mobility that will coexist with the existing infrastructures, a range of new public and semi-public spaces which will make and encourage the social aspect of the site, a rich economy which is obtained by the many commercial areas on the ground floors and separate blocks. Then at last comes the architecture that will relatively be shaped and composed upon these main drivers of this proposal, with major consideration to the “design for all” approach and a pure tendency for people living in “between ages”.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

1

Defining new topographical levels that are coherent with the existing ones, depicting a co-existance of landscape and architecture. Alterating as little as possible the existing condition of the terrain, and using topography as a base to elevate architecture: terracing from the highest point to the lowest which will create a visual connection to the city as well.

2

Consequently coming from different factors of the site, such as noise pollution, pollution topography, current functions and the context, a functional zoning is decided, where buildings are spread in a compact shape, shape creating public spaces in between one another; functions are mixed and placed according to the site factors (elderly housing further from noise and others).

3

Introducing and defining a new road, that connects the site to the sorrounding context. context This is the spinal road, road playing an important role also within the site of the “micro-town”, linking two major parts of terrain levels (+4 ; 0 ; -4) and encouraging a city-like environment for the end users. Outdoor parking spaces is provided along main existing roads and the new one.

4

5

Many areas of public spaces are proposed in order to promote social integration, well-being, economical development, urban agriculture and so on. Public spaces are defined by: the overall building shape; landcape features and vegetation vegetation. Along with outdoor spaces, semi-open and within-building spaces are provided as well, as different typologies of landscape, urban scape and indoor space. space

Introducing soft mobility system in the site which is connected to the exiting infrastructure. The aim is to provide most of the site area with walking/biking paths that are also adapted to ‘design for all’ standards. Mixing pedestrians, bikes and other electrical vehicles is another point in this proposal, thus no specific tracks are highlighted. Parking and smart technologies are also included within the system (electrical electrical charging, wif, etc). etc

The design proposal focuses on the quality of life of the residents of the site, the elderly and the students. Certain criteria’s like accessibility, social, physical and mental well-being, security and self-sufficiency are kept in mind while evolving the concept. The site has access from three points; one being the main spinal roade, an entry for the general public and the other two specifically for the residents of site. Inter-connectivity inside the site has been proposed in such a way that maximum spots within the site could be reached in an emergency. Paths for general physical well-being are provided keeping in mind that there is no intrusion of public vehicles. Parking are given on the peripheries for restricting deep access of outsiders in the site.

DESIGN PROCESS The building blocks are arranged and stacked in a way that they can utilize both the climate and the view of the city. Both the blocks for elderly and students are placed and arranged mixed between each other for maximum socializing; keeping the privacy of both the stakeholder’s in mind. Ease of access to the respective units have been provided by creating paths along and through the building blocks. The blocks are arranged in a way that they create piazzas’ for socializing and outdoor activities. The commercial areas are spread all along the ground floor. Facilities buildings will also follows the same design of other buildings to have the sense of being connected with others. All the necessary measures have been taken to keep the vegetation of the site as it is as possible. Also a separate space is given for agricultural activities. The purpose of this project is not only for providing both elderly people and youth ones with high quality buildings and residences but also for getting them together on account of having more interaction and increase their life expectancy.
