“Peace of mind for you and your family at all times”

The Private GP & Night Doctor Service We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Whilst the NHS is a good system, demand has increased so much that it has become almost impossible for it to offer the prompt and personal care that we all wish for. We believe our registered patients want a professional service with peace of mind at all times – from prompt telephone advice, a face to face consultation or organising an admission into hospital, anytime, day or night – all provided by a small group of doctors whom they know.

Hopefully, you will not need to see a doctor urgently, but accidents or illnesses can occur when least expected, and having to travel or wait several hours for healthcare can only make the ordeal worse. You can stay registered with your NHS GP, as our aim is not to replace your care but to work alongside it, providing you with our extra medical care when you or your family need it most. It only takes two minutes to register online today, so we can look after you in the future.

ENTERTAINMENT

EVERYBODY’S WINTER DIPpING Is it just my own social media echo chamber, or is everybody in the UK into open-water swimming now? It feels like every day another of my f riends pops up rosy-cheeked on Instagram extolling the benefits of a dip in a reservoir in midwinter. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done my fair share of wild-water adventures, but usually the urge takes me when it’s a bit hot out and I fancy cooling off. But seeing everyone in their bobble hats and swimming cozzies yelling with delight at a frosty dawn dip has, at the very least, piqued my interest. So, when my friends at watersports brand Red Original laid down a challenge, the decision was made. They sent me their new Pro Change Robe EVO to test out and it’s such a serious bit of kit, I’d be ashamed not to use it properly, so here we go… Having asked around my friends who are passionate about winter swimming, I can now honestly say I cannot wait to give it a go. I’m hearing so many first-hand accounts of the sheer exhilaration when the cold water hits you, the sense of achievement when you power through that first cold blast, followed by the feeling of transcending to a new mental state of focus, calm and strength. So, now here I am, laying down my response to the challenge in black and white print: I’m in, 100%, no backing out! While in true outdoor dad fashion I scour the long-range forecast for that perfect frosty morning, here are some pieces of essential preparation info I’ve picked up.

OutdOors Where There are groups of devotees all over this region but check websites like wildswimming.co.uk to make sure your chosen hotspot isn’t illegal or unsafe. Some local lakes, such as Sale Water Park, have sessions open to everyone, while other locations, such as water company reservoirs, are strictly no-go.

Safety

I’ve been given two pieces of advice. First, obviously never go alone and make sure everyone in your group is a competent swimmer. There are no lifeguards out there and you’re your own responsibility. Second, no matter how macho you think you are, never just jump in. When the cold water hits you, it makes you involuntarily gasp, which is, of course, a serious drowning risk. Inch in gradually!

What you nEed

It’s a truly inclusive sport and seems to attract every kind of people, not least because you don’t need loads of kit. Most of my friends just go in swimming costumes and a woolly hat – I reckon I’ll wear some sandals, just in case I tread on a knobbly stone – and, of course, there’s this fantastic dry robe I can’t wait to try. It’s got everything: waterproof and breathable outer shell; stretch side panels for privacy when changing outdoors; super-warm, moisture-wicking fleece lining; multiple storage pockets; long sleeves with cuffs; and a toggle hood. I’m ready for anything, now who’s joining me? www.redoriginal.com

Meet Susie Batista of Cheshire Property Staging, our new regular interior design expert…

Hello all! It’s an honour to get such a great page in a magazine I read myself and have always supported. My name is Susie Batista and I am the Director of Cheshire Property Staging (CPS), an interior design firm that specialises in styling show homes, property developments and residential interior design. To me, what means the most about my work is helping to change/improve people’s lives... is there anything more rewarding? Be it the way my clients now feel walking through their front door to a beautiful, well-thoughtout house featuring colours they love and furniture positioned just perfectly, or it may be a developer’s surprise when he/she gets £20-30k over what they thought a property would sell for. I’ll be bringing you regular interior tips, updates on the property industry and also let you in on what’s going on behind the scenes with some of our projects! I hope you enjoy it! Susie x

HOME

Show home SOLD! This was the first time the developers had created a show home after many years in the industry. They thought they’d ‘test’ if they could increase the asking price and get more interest by working with CPS. The result? Valued at 10% higher than any other of their developments, a flood of viewings and multiple offers in the first two weeks on the market! Research has revealed that housebuilding in the North West has accelerated faster than anywhere else in England over the past five years and properties can frequently sell faster and for higher prices if they are presented as homes instead of empty spaces. What’s your biggest struggle when it comes to your own home? When it comes to the interior of your homes, I know style and furnishings don’t come naturally to everyone. So, I want to know, what is your BIGGEST struggle with a particular area of your home or overall scheme? I’ll run a section each issue, answering your questions and, by doing so, helping other readers too. Contact suzanne@cheshirepropertystaging.co.uk One of the most common problems people have is that their house or a particular room “just doesn’t feel ‘finished’”, so here are my top additions for bringing life and style to a room: The dream job, and you can do it too! I can’t tell you how many people say being a designer or stager would be their dream job. I smile and agree, because it really is incredible. But the hours are long and the pressure and demand is real. Regardless, I couldn’t think of anything I enjoy more than seeing the results and clients’ faces when I reveal the CPS team’s work... it’s priceless. I have so many people, women mainly, messaging me asking for the opportunity to work with the firm or for general advice on where to start. My answer is always to fully educate yourself on the business side of design as well as getting hands-on experience by offering to redesign friends’ or family’s living rooms – this way, you can build a portfolio and start showing the world

• Large floor plants in oversized pots (B&Q) • Orchids or faux floral display (OKA or Homesense) • Cushions for the sofa, occasional chair and beds (Homesense, Dunelm, John Lewis) • Coffee table books (Amazon, Waterstones) • Candles and diffusers (Homesense, John Lewis) what you can do! The number of people needing help with their home is huge, so if you are thinking of a career in this incredible industry, me and my team love to offer advice, so get in touch.

• Mirrors and wall art (Olivia’s, Desenio, John Lewis, Homesense) • Rugs (Benuta) • Lighting – table lamps and floor lamps (Olivia’s, Next) Coffee table styling Not always the easiest to get right, it’s such a focal point of a room and although there’s no right or wrong way to style it, when we’re styling a room, the finished look needs to be perfect (no pressure!). Nothing too high on it if two sofas are either side, as people will struggle to see each other. Nothing small too close to the edge, in case it’s knocked off. A coffee table book is a must and a candle or diffuser is always welcome. But keep enough room on it so it can actually be used to place a drink on!

POSTCARD

from Andalucía It’s not all plain sailing living abroad Especially when you find yourself toe-curlingly embarrassed by your fellow countrymen here Allow me to explain. I’ve always been super proud to tell people I am English. Home of the amazing NHS, the 2012 Olympics, Oasis, Take That, cream teas and, most importantly, pubs. However, since encountering some delightful creatures down on the Costa del Sol, Englishmen that Nigel Farage would no doubt embrace as f riends, my own national pride has somewhat waned. Beer bellies straining under St George flag t-shirts, loud, racist, expletive-f illed language drowning out our European friends’ gentle tones in many a chiringuito. So, now I tell everyone I meet that I’m Irish. Gracias, Kerry-born granny Fitzgerald.

The final straw came in La Cala de Mijas market. I head there most weeks whilst waiting for my own vegetables to crop. So, there I am, queuing patiently at my favourite Spanish family-run stall, when what do I hear, but that loud, grating, stereotypical Estuarine English twang. As I look up, I spy a big, fat, shouty man, imported immigrant-bashing Daily Mail under his arm and sporting a f ine yearround Spanish tan – this is clearly someone who lives here. But, immigrant himself, can he speak one word of Spanish? Of course not. The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one. I watch on in horror as he repeatedly points at the cabbages behind the stall and demands his “C A B B B B I D G G G E” over and over again. But does the Young Spanish Guy behind the counter get angry? No, he gets even. Brilliant. As Shouty Man shouts and points, Young Spanish Guy moves from vegetable to vegetable, pointing and asking, “Este?” (This one?) All with a big friendly smile on his face. And moving slowly. Oh-so slowly. As you can imagine, Shouty Man is getting angrier and angrier. And redder and redder.

LE

STY

STYLE

I fear a heart attack is imminent. Finally, after pointing at the hinojo (fennel), pepinos (cucumbers), apio (celery), peras (pears), zanahorias (carrots) and lechugas (lettuces), Young Spanish Guy finally picks up the desired cabbage. “Yes, yes, that’s it,” cries Shouty Man in relief, mopping his forehead and pudgy, gammon-coloured cheeks. But the horror does not end there. Oh, no. As Young Spanish Guy turns away to bag it, over comes the stall’s boss. In fluent English, she engages with Shouty Man and asks how her grandson did, explaining that it’s his first weekend working the family stall. I wait with bated breath and pray that Shouty Man just answers, “Fine”. But, of course, that would be too much to ask. “Well, he did ok,” he says, “but he’ll do much better when he learns the language” before promptly turning on his whitesocked-and-sandalled heels. I stand there, open-mouthed, appalled and embarrassed at what I had just witnessed. But then, I see the grandmother and Young Spanish Guy, not cross, but hanging on to each other as they throw their heads back laughing. I move forward and feel obliged to apologise on behalf of my country and attempt, in my best Spanish, to voice my anger. Replying in perfect English, the grandmother reassured me, “Oh, don’t worry, Chica. Antonio is fluent too. He’s been learning English since before he could walk. He knew exactly what El Ignorante Ingles wanted.” Well played, Young Spanish Guy. Well played. Right, must dash. Need to get that Irish passport sorted and learn how to speak Kerry…

The King William Wilmslow a lovely local stay

Found in the bustling centre of Cheshire’s leafy Wilmslow, The King William hotel is quaint and charming, a real home away from home The recently renovated rooms are clean and quirky and although the bathroom is a little basic, the contemporary decor and incredibly comfy bed more than make up for it. Plus, it’s a super-cosy and snug place to wake up on a rainy Sunday morning too! You don’t have to go far to make your morning brew either – there's a handy kettle set-up right next to the bed!

The pub is dog friendly and boasts a large hidden courtyard-style beer garden, so it’s the perfect spot to visit as we head into spring. The King William is the ideal place for a little night away if you’re not looking to travel too far afield. And, as a favourite of famous local faces, you’re sure to bump into a Real Housewife or two!

Delicious pub grub It’s safe to say The King William’s Sunday roast was one of the best we’d had for a long while. A man of many talents, Lee is also a trained chef and his Yorkshire puds really caught our attention – gorgeous and ginormous! We were given a warm welcome by bubbly General Manager Lee, who showed us to one of the six bedrooms, where chocolatecovered strawberries and Champagne were waiting for us. If you’re staying over for a celebration, an anniversary or birthday perhaps, then the staff at the hotel are happy to offer this little added extra.

We noticed pub staff had to actually turn visitors away as they were fully booked for roasts – a sure sign of a good thing. The amazing atmosphere created by a talented live singer proved a huge draw too. There’s live music at the venue every Thursday and Sunday, so don’t miss out.

Glossy Mag: What is the story behind Fixx Salons? Lauren Bickerton: Fixx salons was founded in June 2018 by business owners and brothers Matt and Tom Agass, with the help of myself and Ben Mayne, both of us hairstylists. The team wanted to provide a space where hair, beauty and aesthetics could be incorporated all under one roof and a chic and welcoming atmosphere would bring city-centre edge and culture into suburban town Altrincham. Fixx Salons boasts a light and airy space in which hair creatives can work their magic, offering clients an unrushed and relaxing experience. The salon has teamed up with Natasha Filippidi of Skin Deep Medispa and Aesthetic Doctor, Dr Simona Juverdeanu MRCGP, DCH, DFSRH, LoC SDI/IUD to bring you the very best in the business. sterile environment during this time and we aim to continue to do this for the foreseeable future. We had a lot of projects planned for 2020 that had to be put on hold, which has slowed progress down more than we would have liked, but we are hoping we can get back to them soon, which is exciting! GM: How do you maintain team morale? LB: We have a talented, experienced and welcoming team. It has been just as hard for them as it has for us over the last two years. We pride ourselves on education, whether it be a workshop on learning new techniques, or even just taking some time to care for our teams' mental health. We are only as good as our team! Trends are changing all the time, so it’s really important to stay current and to create that buzz about the salon. GM: Can you reveal the key hair trends for 2022?

LB: We had a lot of 'post-lockdown' hair to help with, to say the least! Like most of the salons in the area, we have had to close our doors numerous times across 2020 and 2021. With client cancellations and lockdowns, it’s been a challenging two years for business. We now face the issue of maintaining business whilst we are still in the midst of the pandemic and times are uncertain. We are blessed to have such a spacious area to work in, and we have worked hard to maintain a clean,

LB: Rich, red-brunette tones and cool platinum colours are HOT for 2022. The bob is still current – playing around with different lengths can really change up your look – and undone box braids for more of an urban feel are popular too. SEX & THE SINGLE MANCUNIAN MAN Ghosting, deceptive profile pics and ‘shall-we-go-Dutch?’ dilemmas... Didsbury’s Ian Parker reveals what it’s really like to go online dating in your 50s With Celebs Go Dating and First Dates back on our small screens and a reboot of the ultimate dissection of urban relationships Sex and the City (aka And Just Like That...) in full televisual flow, schedulers know all too well that ‘new year, new love’ sits at the top of many a resolution list. But what’s it really like here on the ground, searching for love in the big city? And what if you’re neither a Carrie, Miranda nor Charlotte but a Manchester-dwelling, 51-year-old guy? Ian started online dating around two years ago. He was not alone. At the start of the pandemic, dating app usage soared. Tinder recorded its highest number of swipes in a single day (three billion) back in March 2020 and Bumble’s video calls increased by 70%. Glossy Mag: Hi Ian! So, tell us a bit about yourself (don’t worry, we won’t swipe left!) Ian: I’m originally from Shropshire but moved to Manchester over 20 years ago. I currently live in West Didsbury with my two black Labradors, Bella and Bonnie, and my new tabby kitten, Beano. I mainly work from home in healthcare marketing. I love flexibility, the ability to pop out to walk the dogs or do a Pilates class. GM: A kitten! That must impress a lot of potential dates... Ian: (Laughs) I adopted him just before Christmas, because I was quite lonely. When 5pm arrives and it turns dark and they’ve had their walk, the dogs don’t want to know me! I got Beano for a bit of company.

GM: Tell us a little bit about your relationship history... Ian: For the f irst 20 or so years of Manchester life, I lived with a long-term partner. It was hard splitting up but, luckily, we’re now really good friends. After the breakup, in 2020, one of my friends put me on a dating site and I met someone quite quickly. We spent lockdown together and it was great, but it didn’t work out. Afterwards, I decided to just focus on my new house, building a home. It wasn’t until the end of 2021 that I decided to dive back into dating. GM: How did the new dating chapter start? Ian: Not too bad! I got lots of dates, sometimes too many! But initially, I wasn’t savvy. There were a few ‘what have I done!?’ moments. There are a lot of genuine people out there but a lot of not-so-genuine ones too! GM: Tell us more... Ian: You soon realise that not everything is as it seems. Some people sign up for onenight stands and nothing more. They’re not looking for a proper relationship like me. Over-the-top photo filters are another pitfall... quite a lot of people look absolutely nothing like their photos! And then there are the people who are not the age they say they are.

GM: Really? Ian: Oh, yes! It’s extremely common. I went on a date with someone who was a decade older than she said she was. I liked her anyway, so why lie? Someone told me that they met a guy who lied about his age, and it didn’t come out until they were booking a holiday and he had a meltdown over her seeing his passport! For me, if you’re looking for love and stability, don't start with a lie. GM: How easy is it to strike up a conversation online? Ian: I always try to have a bit of banter with someone. People say they’re looking for someone who is good-looking, has a stable job etc., but I think most people want someone they can have a laugh with. GM: Any first-date horror stories you can share? Ian: One lady turned up with her friend and proceeded to get really drunk! (laughs). There was another lady who just didn’t talk. We sat in silence. Another, after a handful of dates, just ‘ghosted’ me. GM: Where’s your favourite place to have a first date? Ian: I think a nice pub with a good vibe or a coffee shop, so you can chat and get to know each other. I don’t like the cinema or theatre as you’re basically not communicating. Dog walks are OK too... although you’re both walking side-on and can’t see each other’s faces (laughs). GM: Who should pay on the first date? Ian: The man. I hate seeing guys who don’t pay on First Dates! I believe in good manners, pulling out chairs, opening doors etc. I think the art of manners and chivalry has been lost! GM: Do you think it’s harder for men or women to navigate the dating app scene? Ian: It’s more diff icult for women. Men outnumber them on all the sites (FACT: on some, it’s an 80%/20% split) and there’s a lot of cheaters, mainly men, on them too.

GM: Would you say you’re someone who wants a relationship or needs one? Ian: I don’t need someone now, but I want someone. I love having someone there to watch TV with and share opinions with. I love cooking for someone. I hate cooking for one. The freedom and space of single life is OK, but bottom line, I want a relationship where we bring out the best in each other, enhance each other's lives and grow together. GM: Advice for anyone about to dip into the dating waters? Ian: Go for it! You’ll learn to spot the red flags and not everything will run smoothly, but don’t give up! The next person you meet could be the one. Personally, the apps I liked were Bumble and Hinge (both recently named in The Telegraph’s top 20 best online dating sites). Keep an open mind – don’t rule someone out because they don’t fit your ideal specifications. Be authentic, transparent and honest. Enjoy it! GM: And, finally, how’s the search for love going? Ian: Well, I met someone just before Christmas and we’ve had a few dates and it’s going really, really well. I’ve come off all the sites now. I might be back in a Glossy Mag wedding photoshoot very soon! (laughs).

RECIPE

Easter Bakes Food editor, stylist and author Angela Boggiano and her photographer husband, Craig Robertson, owners of At The Kitchen in Cheadle Hulme, share their delightful and sweet, seasonal treats for all the family

Easter nest chocolate cake 8-inch sponge: 330g butter 330g caster sugar 6 eggs 300g plain flour 6 tbsp cocoa 3 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp baking powder Chocolate buttercream: 400g butter 400g icing sugar 150g chocolate 2 tbsp cocoa Easter nest: 6 shredded wheat

100g chocolate Mini eggs/creme eggs to decorate To make the Easter nest: 1. Line a small deep bowl with clingfilm. 2. Melt the chocolate. 3. Crush the shredded wheat and mix in the chocolate. 4. Press into the bowl to make a nest shape and leave to set. 5. Line three 8-inch cake tins. To make the sponge: 1. Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla.

2. Add the eggs one by one and mix well. 3. Add the flour, baking powder and cocoa and mix to a smooth batter. 4. Divide the mixture into the tins and bake for 30 minutes at 160°C or until a skewer comes out clean. 5. Leave the sponge to cool. To make the buttercream (whilst sponge cooling): 1. Melt the chocolate. 2. Cream the butter, sugar and cocoa, then add the melted chocolate and beat until light and fluffy.

To decorate the cake: 1. Fill the sponges with buttercream and ice the sides of the cake. 2. Place in the fridge so the buttercream becomes firm. 3. Remove the nest carefully from the bowl and place on top of the cake (stick down with buttercream). 4. To finish the cake, pipe a border around the edge of the cake using a star nozzle and add the mini eggs/ creme eggs to the nest.

Simnel cake 200g marmalade 200g marzipan 100g dried fruits 7-inch pastry case: 200g plain flour 100g butter 50g caster sugar 1 egg Frangipane: 100g butter 100g caster sugar 2 eggs

To make the frangipane: 1. Cream the butter and sugar, add the egg, then mix in the flour, ground almonds and cinnamon. To build the cake: 1. When the pastry case is baked, spread the marmalade on the bottom of the case, sprinkle the dried fruits and crumble 100g of the marzipan on top of the marmalade.

2. Fill the rest of the pastry case with frangipane, then bake for 30 minutes at 170°C. 3. Roll the remaining marzipan into 11 balls and blow torch the top so the sugar browns. 4. To decorate, make a thick water icing (icing sugar and lemon juice, food colouring optional) and pipe a pretty pattern on top of the tart. 5. Finish by placing the marzipan balls around the edge of the tart.

Kimberley Cairns – Minds Matter We meet the Sale-born integrative psychologist whose outstanding work in mental health is helping everyone from school children and sportspeople to workers in Covid-struck care homes to prioritise wellness and live free from mental distress

34 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

PEOPLE

With one in four people experiencing a mental health problem in this country each year and the pandemic-hit planet all too often feeling upside down, we’ve never been more in need of people like Kimberley. Compassionate and gently spoken, she has 13 years’ experience working in mental health and innovatively challenging inequalities within support provision. She advises the Government, is published in medical journals, volunteers her time and expertise, and is an award-winning wellness influencer too. A passion for the lives of others Kimberley (BSC, MSC, MBPsS) grew up in her parents’ Cheshire hotel, which was renowned for its celebrity clientele, charity fundraisers and cultural diversity. She was surrounded daily by people from all walks of life. “I was so intrigued by these diverse characters, their life stories and often, the challenges they faced,” recalls Kimberley. “Little did I know, this curiosity would become my life’s work.” After completing a master’s degree in psychology, Kimberley secured her first role in mental health at the world-famous Priory in Altrincham. Initially, she worked with adult addictions, later moving into the care of young people with eating disorders, igniting a passion for helping those battling negative body image. Aesthetic wellness Kimberley is pioneering a positive psychology initiative known as ‘psycho-aesthetics’, which supports the consumer (e.g. someone considering anti-wrinkle injections) in exploring the connection between appearance and emotions, enabling them to make healthier treatment choices. This work saw her found The Aesthetic Wellness Foundation, the first charity of its kind. In an industry that is unregulated and a world that’s increasingly conscious of how it looks to others (the ‘Zoom boom’ has us all living through the self ie lens), her influence has never been more vital.

“The work of the foundation is simple – to reduce harm,” explains Kimberley. “We want each and every person who chooses an aesthetic treatment to have a safe, healthy and fulfilled experience, one which brings about a positive, lasting impact on their lives. Sadly, our work exists because this is not always the case. We are there when adverse, life- changing reactions do happen, providing an understanding and non-judgmental space for anyone who has suffered psychologically due to treatment trauma.” Kimberley has acted as a clinical advisor to the Government on the issues of regulation and last year, she helped put a law in place that made it illegal for underage patients to have fillers. Constructing the ‘fourth emergency service’ Kimberley also works as a volunteer emergency therapist and project leader for Heads Up – a national charitable organisation that provides a rapid emergency response to psychological trauma suffered on a catastrophic scale.

“We often overlook those who have a perfect life on paper and fail to recognise the unique challenges of unique circumstances.” Kimberley also works with Eden Wellstyle, an organisation that offers access to carefully selected, fully trained wellness providers and whose holistic philosophy encompasses everything from creative arts and nutrition to consultant psychiatry. Better times ahead “My work is really focused on how we capture wellness as a part of our everyday discussion,” says Kimberley. “It’s about making time for our wellness before our bodies make time for illness.” Whilst the world’s a bit of a scary place right now, it feels a whole lot brighter to discover the work of Kimberley. “It’s not all doom and gloom,” she smiles. “There are some better times ahead and some great opportunities for preserving our wellness.”

“We work on the ground, helping the emotional recovery of those involved in devastating events,” says Kimberley. “We were there at the 2017 Manchester bombing, the Grenfell Tower fire and the London Bridge terror attacks. Our latest work, CovidAid, is a programme created to ‘care for the carers’, targeting traumatised care home workers in, amongst other places, north Manchester.” Wellness for all Additionally, Kimberley works within education and leading businesses, to ensure wellness is integrated into the curriculum or working day, as well as with elite sports personnel, including Olympian Rebecca Adlington OBE. Each strand aims to bring about a shift in attitude towards mental wellbeing in communities that have previously been excluded from the discussion:

OrthTeam

Here our leading musculoskeletal (MSK) experts answer your questions Mr John Rogers

Professor Hector Chinoy

Mr Barnes Morgan

The OrthTeam are a group of highly skilled consultants based at the multi-million-pound OrthTeam Centre in Didsbury, Manchester. The facility offers patients world-class expertise combined with state-of-the-art diagnostics I'm hoping to take part in the London Marathon for the first time this October. I'm 50. Would you recommend a health assessment prior to the event and when would be the optimum time to have it? There are lots of health benefits from training for and running a marathon, but it also carries risks of injury. There are also small but important risks of cardiac and other medical problems to consider, especially in this age group. If you have any significant past medical history, risk factors for cardiovascular disease (family history, smoking, high cholesterol and/or blood pressure), are taking regular medication, or if you have a history of musculoskeletal injuries, joint or spinal problems, then it would be worth having a health assessment, ideally six months or more before the marathon. We offer in-depth health screening at the OrthTeam Centre. Dr John Rogers, OrthTeam Consultant Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physician.

During the cold weather, the pain, swelling and stiffness in my hands and wrists has gotten worse – could it be rheumatoid arthritis? Pain, swelling and stiffness could be signs of rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammatory condition affecting about one in a hundred people. However, these symptoms can also be an indication of osteoarthritis, which is far more common. Patients often report that joint pains can worsen in cold and damp weather. As rheumatoid and osteoarthritis are different conditions, I would suggest making an appointment to see your GP to investigate your issues in more detail and, if appropriate, make an onward rheumatology referral. Professor Hector Chinoy, OrthTeam Consultant Rheumatologist.

I have recurring pain and stiffness in my shoulder, could this be frozen shoulder? The short answer is ‘yes’, but there are other causes to exclude. Frozen shoulder typically causes severe pain initially, followed by loss of shoulder movements, particularly rotating the arm or lifting it away from the body. This can result in difficulty with simple activities, such as putting your arm behind your back or doing your hair. It's a painful and unpleasant condition, but usually, it’s easy to treat with a guided injection to the shoulder. There are other conditions, such as shoulder arthritis or calcific tendonitis, which can mimic frozen shoulder, therefore, an examination and investigations, such as X-rays, are needed to be sure of the diagnosis. Health Assessments at the OrthTeam Centre: Pu ng you in control of your health The OrthTeam Centre offers indepth health screening which helps you to understand your body be er; op mising your health and wellbeing. Health Assessment Our screening involves taking a detailed medical history, discussion of health goals and noninvasive tests, which includes:

• Respiratory and cardiovascular examina on

How was your experience at the OrthTeam Centre? I was very impressed with the cu ngedge facility and Dr Rogers was very professional, extremely knowledgeable and personable. He made me feel totally at ease and I felt comfortable confessing my lifestyle habits in a nonjudgemental environment.

This informa on is then used to determine an individual's risks and best advise on further screening, inves ga ons or interven ons that are most appropriate. The aim is to work with the pa ent to maximise their health and wellbeing; discussing and agreeing achievable goals, and coordina ng any further care required using mul disciplinary input from other medical, allied health professional and sport science colleagues.

What informa on did you find most insigh ul? The prac cal, takehome guidance. I've been a bit naive thinking that because I eat well and exercise every day, that I'm fit and healthy with no improvements to make. Achievable goals Dr Rogers provided were to; reduce my caffeine intake and get more sleep. He also gave me really good ps on the types of supplements I should be taking and to have a daily probio c to promote my gut health.

Donna Niman, 47, from Manchester had an indepth health assessment with Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant, Dr John Rogers. Here Donna talks about her experience:

What would your advice be to others thinking of having a health assessment? I would definitely recommend and encourage people to have this type of screening as it's really useful. The MSK assessment, tes ng my range of movement, uncovered that I have a slight issue with my rotator cuff (which I was unaware of) and Dr Rogers gave me some exercises to help improve flexibility in my shoulder, and suggested that I use a resistance band to help with this, and to make a followup appointment with him if the problem persists.

• Lifestyle and physical ac vity • Past and current medical problems • Current medica on (if any) • Mental health • Musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints • Family and social history • MSK examina on

Why did you decide to have a health assessment? I exercise every day and eat well, however I wanted to get an insight into what's actually going on in my body. I'm at an age now where you worry more about your health and I thought that this was a perfect opportunity to find out where I needed to make improvements.

What patients are saying

Problems some of us could encounter and how the Urology Clinics Manchester team can help:

‘Excellent care in every way. Professional, caring and friendly. All Covid-19 protocols maintained at all times.’

Prostate cancer occurs in over 52,000 men a year in the UK. It is easily detected using blood tests (PSA), scans and, for some, a biopsy. The team works in the North West’s only Comprehensive Prostate Centre – offering all treatments under one roof – and has undertaken the largest number of robotic surgeries in the region, totalling over 2,000 cases. It also offers radiotherapy techniques and access to research trails. One in 10 people get kidney stones. These require special expertise. The Urology Clinics Manchester team runs one of the largest stone services in the city, with access to all treatments, including highly effective laser and shockwave therapy.

Professor Vijay Sangar, Consultant Urological Surgeon and Professor of Urology

Over 50% of men over the age of 40 will experience erectile dysfunction or ED. The team offers discrete private services to help men resolve such problems. As global experts, the team pioneered shockwave treatment in the north of England and continues to offer this internationally accepted therapy. Over the coming issues, the Urology Clinics Manchester team will be providing regular advice columns to help guide you through different urological problems and how it can support you in dealing with them.

Mr Jeremy Oates, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon

Mr Graham Young, Consultant Urological Surgeon

You’re in safe hands “Almost half of us will need to see a urologist at some point in our lives, especially as we age,” says Mr Jeremy Oates, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at Urology Clinics Manchester. “These are usually due to innocent, benign causes, but it’s important to get them checked as they can sometimes be a sign of something more serious. It's also good to speak to a specialist who can offer you expert advice and up-to-date treatment options. The team will be able to spend the time to go through your problems and can offer you personalised care along with cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments.”

‘I cannot fault the care and service I received. After feeling abandoned by the NHS at the tail end of the pandemic, the speed at which I saw the excellent consultant, was booked in and treated saved much anxiety. Whilst I was there, the level of staffing and their kindness and helpfulness was superb. I must also call out that the food choice and quality was outstanding, and the rooms clean and comfortable — just what you need when recovering. I highly recommend the service if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of needing an operation.’

Pabla & Pabla Solicitors

Based in the heart of West Didsbury, Pabla & Pabla Solicitors offer legal advice to those in Manchester and the surrounding areas. In this edition, we catch up with head of Wills & Probate, Suzy Bhaker, who discusses the importance of having a power of attorney in place. Pabla & Pabla Solicitors also tell us about their expert property solicitors, Clinical Negligence Department and the concern around care homes.

Wills & Probate Pabla & Pabla’s Wills and Probate Department is headed by the highly qualif ied and experienced Suzy Bhaker. As an accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) and for the Court of Protection Practitioners, Suzy has worked within the private sector for more than 12 years and provides all her clients with the finest level of service. Suzy Bhaker discusses the importance of putting in place your power of attorney “In this scenario, I want you to imagine

that there are two elderly individuals – Elizabeth and Jonathan,” explains Suzy. ”As Elizabeth started getting older, she decided that it was best to arrange to have a power of attorney in place which would allow her two daughters to help her with her finances. This means that should Elizabeth lose her mental capacity, her daughters could make financial decisions, which were in her best interests, on her behalf.

required to make an application to the Court of Protection, which is responsible for appointing a deputy who can legally manage Jonathan’s finances.”

“As Elizabeth and Jonathan grew older, they both, unfortunately, developed dementia and no longer had mental capacity to make decisions over their money and assets. Due to Elizabeth’s foresight, her two daughters were able to access her bank accounts and deal with property matters on Elizabeth’s behalf to pay for her needs.

If you are suffering through illness or have any concerns about your health or a loved one’s health, please get in touch with Suzy to discuss putting into place a power of attorney. Alternatively, if your parent or elderly relative has already developed an illness resulting in them losing their mental capacity, please get in touch to discuss an application to the Court of Protection.

“Unfortunately, Jonathan had not had that same foresight and had not put into place a power of attorney. Therefore, Jonathan’s son was unable to gain access to any of Jonathan’s money or assets to pay for Jonathan’s needs. Jonathan’s son was now

It is important to note that a power of attorney will only cover assets within the UK. If the individual needing a power of attorney does have assets abroad, additional measures are also required, all of which Suzy can assist with.

Clinical Negligence Department The after-effects of Covid-19 have left the NHS overstretched, overcrowded and extremely underfunded. As the NHS went into Covid-19 with an already emerging staff crisis as well as rising waiting times for care, the pandemic has resulted in difficulties for the staff of hospitals, clinics and GPs as well as those sat on the waiting list.

“At some point in our lives, we are all likely to need to receive medical treatment,” says Joanne. “When we do, we are entitled to expect the correct standard of treatment. Sadly, that is not always the case, and the result is that a person can suffer unnecessarily. It is important to emphasise that this is rarely the fault of the NHS staff but more often down to a lack of funding, training or resources.

One of the key values behind Pabla & Pabla Solicitors has always been to provide help and justice to individuals when they need it most. Year on year, we have been able to offer new services to our clients, most recently the addition of our Clinical Negligence Department.

“If any problems with your treatment or care have caused you pain or suffering, we can help you claim compensation. All cases are funded using a no-win, no-fee arrangement, so assistance can be given to everybody, regardless of means.

Headed by the brilliant Joanne Maher, our Clinical Negligence Department is here to assist those who have received negligent care and aims to obtain fair compensation for the injuries caused. In this issue, Joanne discusses the value of seeking the advice of a solicitor, should you receive negligent treatment.

“We understand how stressful and upsetting these claims can be, as they can often involve life-changing injuries. We have various aims when representing you and the two most important are to ensure you get the compensation you deserve and to promote the importance of patient safety for providers of medical treatment.

Care home claims The UK population is living longer and, as a result, the number of elderly care home residents is increasing each year. With more residents going into care, this should not be met with a reduction in the quality of care received. Sadly, we have found that due to staff shortages, our frontline workers are under enormous amounts of pressure to look after our elderly population properly. Although most staff within the care sector are doing a fantastic job, unfortunately, they are often let down by lack of funding, with many care homes across the UK left under pressure. As a result, many residents don’t receive the care and attention that they require.

It is frighteningly apparent that there is very little awareness in the UK as to how to deal with any type of suffering, neglect or abuse within the care home sector. We are striving to raise awareness of the problems within some homes and, ideally, improve standards for everybody. Here at Pabla & Pabla Solicitors, we have found that the number of residents who have experienced suffering within a care home environment is concerningly high. Standard complaints tend to include residents experiencing pressure sores, dehydration, unsanitary conditions, incorrect medication, lack of exercise or mental stimulation, and bodily injury etc.

We are committed to assisting you throughout the process and we will provide you with a personal service rather than the ‘factory’ approach taken by some solicitors.” If you have any queries regarding our Clinical Negligence Department, please get in touch with Johanne Maher using the below contact information.

We have a specialist team of lawyers that can help to assist in ensuring your loved ones receive the proper standard of care from today onwards. In cases where this is too late, we can assist you in claiming compensation as well as raising awareness of these issues for the benef it of future residents. If you believe your parent or relative has not received the care that they should be receiving within a UK care home, please contact Pabla & Pabla for a confidential, no-obligation discussion regarding any concerns that you have. All claims are brought on a no-win, no-fee basis.

He is frequently out and about in the local community, be it at sports events, charity events or socialising in the local restaurants, cafes and bars in Chorlton.

What is the property market like at the moment? January is always a very busy month for me and the team here at JP & Brimelow. So many clients have had a chance to sit down over the festive period and discuss options, plans for 2022 and areas of interest. I’m noticing that more and more clients are looking for extra space now due to changes in their workplace and working weeks.

or by the sea. For the second time, I sold the most expensive home here on Manchester Road, Chorlton for over £1.4 million. One of my favourites, I sold it to my clients many years ago and then they updated/ remodeled, and it always helps when Sonia Pabla-Thomas of SPACE|AP in Didsbury does the design. STUNNING! The only thing that was missing was an indoor swimming pool!

Review of 2021 and best property marketed and sold? 2021 was a busy and exciting year for my team, as many rare homes hit the marketplace due to people’s desire to move out of the city and into the countryside

Outlook for 2022 property market? I personally feel that the market demands and conditions we’re currently experiencing will carry on in South Manchester as couples, first-time buyers,

professionals and families enter the market looking to make the next steps. I launched 12 market-ready properties prior to the December 26th rush, and all have received a fantastic amount of interest, with several achieving sales now. We have built a sleek sales process and all my team at the Chorlton and Didsbury office are knowledgeable, professional and skilled in their marketplace. So, if you’re looking at making that next move, I’d love to help you achieve your next property goals.

Mehak Kazmi Mehak is the co-founder of a digital marketing agency Kaybox in Manchester. Her previous experience was as a qualified recruiter, working for Sky, British Airways and the Home Office. She has a keen interest in helping small businesses succeed through marketing

What was it like starting your own business?

How do you get sales on a consistent basis?

When we co-founded Kaybox, we wanted to help small businesses. But after a few months, I was overworked. This is when we decided to bring in systems to manage the workflow, which meant it helped produce consistent work and made it easy to hire people and train them on the systems. My advice would be to take your business to the next level, you should start to implement systems. I was lucky enough to have a co-founder who happens to love systemising.

Small businesses struggle to generate consistent leads. Using Instagram, I looked for businesses that didn’t have a website and messaged them with the aim of a quick chat, and the leads started to come in. This became our main lead-generation process every month.

42 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

I advise any business to have one main method of generating leads.

How do you help small businesses grow? Small business owners don’t have the time to run their marketing and struggle to generate consistent sales every month. Kaybox offers marketing at affordable prices, enabling people to grow their business. With better marketing, businesses succeed.

EXPERTS

Ask the Expert Vijay Ramani Vijay Ramani is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Manchester University hospitals, The Christie and Urology Clinics Manchester. He is a key opinion leader in urological oncology, a national and international mentor in robotic surgery and one of few high-volume robotic prostatectomy surgeons in the UK.

In 2008, he pioneered the development of robotic surgery in the North West of England. He has a major interest in diagnostics, including prostate biopsy, lower urinary tract symptoms and haematuria. What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate? The urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate can be gradual and creep up on you. They include: a slowing down of your urinary stream; hesitancy (taking longer to start); passing urine frequently during the day and/or night; urgency; incomplete emptying; and, occasionally, passing blood or new onset of pain.

What tests may I need to evaluate my prostate? You will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your urinary symptoms and details of any relevant family history. The specialist will then carry out a clinical examination, including your prostate. You will be advised about whether you require investigations such as blood tests, including PSA, flow rate test and a simple scan to estimate bladder emptying.

What are the options to treat my prostate problem? Seeking specialist advise is often an important first step. Most patients will simply be reassured, whilst some will be monitored or others may be treated with medical therapy. A few may need additional specialist diagnostic testing, including specialised MR scans or a biopsy. It is important to take notes and ask questions during your consultation.

Professor Jari Professor Jari has over 20 years' experience as a consultant knee surgeon. He is considered a specialist in his field and has treated both elite sportspeople and the general public, helping them to regain lost function in their knees due to injury, wear and tear or arthritis.

What is Mako robotic-assisted total knee replacement and how will it help my knee arthritis? Knee arthritis is a common and potentially disabling condition in the general population. There are many potential treatments available, but the final treatment for severe arthritis is a knee replacement. These are very successful operations, but we strive to continually improve the operation and its outcomes. The pinnacle of knee replacement technology currently is robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery.

What are the benefits of Mako technology? Mako technology was designed to help surgeons in their efforts to provide a personalised surgical experience for their patients to improve short-term and longterm outcomes. The system also allows more accurate surgery and is less invasive, which has many advantages, which include: a knee replacement which survives longer; quicker rehabilitation post operatively; potentially quicker return to function and increase in range of knee movement compared to a conventional approach; and finally, to reduce hospital length of stay.

Does a robotic arm perform surgery? When you hear ‘robotic arm-assisted technology’, it’s important to understand that the robotic arm doesn’t actually perform the surgery itself. I do the surgery and the Mako system software helps to pre-plan it. I guide the Mako robotic arm to remove diseased bone and cartilage during the operation and then I will insert the knee replacement.

What Everybody Ought To Know AboutWriting AWill And Drafting A Lasting Power Of Attorney Gareth Morgan, head of Private Client at Blackstone Solicitors, discusses the many facets of his role and how his team can help you. What does a private client solicitor do? A Private Client Solicitor deals with the discussion and drafting of Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Trusts and helps to administer the estate of a person that has passed away. Why is a Will important? It is important for you to make a Will, whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. 61% of people in the UK still do not have a valid Will. That equates to approximately 30 million people. This is amazing when you consider the issues which can be avoided for your loved ones by this often-simple document. The problem is that many people often don’t see a Will as something that is necessary. Unfortunately, these people leave things too late, and this can cause serious problems for their family and loved ones following their deaths. These are some common issues which I find many clients are unaware of :When a person dies without a Will, certain rules known as ‘the rules of intestacy’apply which dictate how much money, property and possessions should be allocated. This may not be how you had intended your estate to be divided or to whom it is distributed. Unmarried partners and unregistered civil partners cannot inherit from each other without a valid Will. Wills can be used to arrange who will care for your minor children should both parents die.

Also, a Will is revoked by marriage or civil partnership. It is particularly advised to use a solicitor to draft your Will where you share property with somebody other than a spouse or civil partner; where you wish to make provision for a dependant who cannot care for themselves; where there is a high probability of somebody contesting your Will; you own property overseas or there is a business involved. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which allows you to appoint somebody (The Attorney) to deal with matters on your behalf. There are two types of LPA, a Financial Decisions LPA which deals with your finances and property decisions, such as selling your house or managing your bank accounts and other investments. There is also an LPA for Health and Care Decisions, which deals with making medical decisions and liaising with local authorities and social services, care homes when issues arise and ultimately, it enables the Attorney to make life sustaining decisions. You must have sufficient mental capacity to be able to instruct a solicitor to draft a power of attorney. Where a person lacks capacity, the options become more technical, expensive and limited and must be referred to the Court of Protection. This situation can be avoided for your family and loved ones by ensuring you have an LPA in place.

Why instruct a Solicitor to deal with Probate matters? Probate is the area of law which I find is most challenging to many clients. They are often still grieving for the loss of a loved one and have not appreciated the volume of work that is often necessary to deal with following a death. This can feel incredibly daunting during an already difficult time. An experienced Private Client Solicitor can take away that pressure and assist with obtaining the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, liaise with various asset holders such as banks and other financial institutes and complete the relevant forms to deal with any tax implications and ensure any wishes in a Will or intestacy are carried out correctly. The Private Client Solicitor will also speak with other departments within the firm to ensure that issues such as property transfers are carried out and ensuring the process is administered as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Blackstone Solicitors has been successfully advising its clients for over 10 years. The firm is expanding and is very experienced in a number of areas of law.

King’s greatest hits panto medley King’s School Year 4 actors staged a medley of pantomime’s greatest hits in their Christmas spectacular. The comic crime caper featured characters from Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, Jack and the Beanstalk, Red Riding Hood and Cinderella – all in one sumptuous show. Promoting a strong moral message of foregoing prejudice in favour of forgiveness, the plot centres on a ‘whodunnit’ tale. Rumours abound when a series of terrible things, including a spate of thefts, besets the sleepy town of Hamlin. The whisperings spread like wildfire and the townsfolk start to put the blame on the usual suspects – Mr Wolf, the Witch and Pinocchio – but don’t jump to any conclusions, because the Red Riding Hood Gang might not be as sweet and innocent as they seem. With original music and script by music teacher Paul Vowels and edited, directed, choreographed and produced by drama specialist Soulla Costanda, the panto was in rehearsal for six weeks and was performed by the 8 and 9-year-olds to an adoring, socially distanced audience.

TEMPERATURE TECH Artilect baselayers My favourite new piece of ultra-high-tech materials science this month came from new technical clothing brand Artilect. It got me thinking about all the technology we can use today to manage our personal temperature in order to perform our best. Coming from Colorado, USA, Artilect is a team of designers and explorers who are interested in pushing the limits of what fabrics can do. The A/SYS baselayer I’ve been using this winter is made of Nuyarn, a new sustainable and durable formulation of Merino wool, which thermoregulates the body for maximum sporting performance and year-round versatility. It dries five times quicker, is 50% more durable, uses 30% less raw materials and maintains amazing stretch and softness for comfort. It also helps that the styling and colours look so good. £75, artilect.studio

Core Body Tech sensors Of course, if you’re to truly understand the impact of temperature on human performance, you’re going to need data. Lots of it. And this is what the pros use. If the Swiss-made CORE Body Temperature Sensor is good enough for the Grenadier, Bora Hansgrohe and Quick-Step pro cycling teams, it’s good enough for me. CORE uses an innovative and wearable thermal energy transfer sensor to measure accurate core body temperature and map its effects on the individual. With its roots in the medical sector, CORE is based on a simple premise: when you get hot, your power output drops. By measuring and understanding the effects of temperature, you can then develop personalised strategies, such as training, pacing, cooling and acclimation to perform your best. corebodytemp.com

Ember mug I do love a brew and I suppose you could argue that a properly hot coffee is essential to performance. So, does that make this piece of tech essential too? Imagine a drinks receptacle that allows you to set and maintain your perfect drinking temperature, no matter how slowly you sip. OK, a techno-mug that costs over a hundred quid and syncs with its own mobile app might be considered by some to be a little excessive. Not me. I’m having one in every colour. £129.95, uk.ember.com

MOTORING

THREE FAMOUS LETTERS The three letters BMW have earned their place in motoring history. Today, the brand can arguably claim a certain proprietorial association with three more letters: M, X and i. The first, M, needs little explanation. The letter, which stands for Motorsport, has been the name of BMW’s performance department since the 1970s and you can expect any car with that famous M badge to go like the clappers. Then, about 20 years ago, came X. This letter conjures images of ‘cross-country’, ‘crossover’ or ‘eXtreme’ conditions and was apt for the new range of off-roaders that began with the X5 and grew into probably the most comprehensive range of SUVs on the market today. Finally, and most recently, came the i badge. A letter synonymous with futuristic electronics, thanks largely to Apple, it was applied beautifully to cars with BMW’s i8 and now graces a similarly fastgrowing range of electric vehicles out of the Bavarian stable. So, why the history lesson? Because I just got a press release from BMW claiming that it’s launched a new car that embodies the best of all three worlds. So, that means a very fast, very practical, all-electric SUV.

Knowing all this background, you can understand why BMW fans are getting excited about this model named iX M60. As well as the letters, there’s a powerful weight of history behind those digits too – in the old days, the last two numbers denoted the engine size, therefore, 60 would have meant a monstrous six litres! As big cylinders fell out of favour, the numerical rankings stuck around, hence 60 today still means this thing is seriously powerful. In fact, considering it’s a big and unstintingly luxurious family vehicle – whose price tag of comfortably over a hundred grand puts it well and truly in limo territory – its peak output of 619hp and insane 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds are all the more impressive. As well as doing all this while 100% emissions-free, it also keeps up with the latest luxury trends, featuring toys and gadgets such as soft-close doors, all-new interior camera, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, ventilated and massage seats, and sun protection glass. Finally, it looks like BMW is making real steps to appeal to the next generation of electric vehicle customers. A high proportion of secondary aluminium and reused plastic play a part in the resourceefficient production of the iX. Its interior uses FSC-certified wood, leather tanned with olive leaf extracts, and other natural materials. Recycled fishing nets are among the raw materials used for the floor coverings and mats.

Fact file / BMW iX M60 / 0-62: 3.8 seconds / Top speed: 155mph (electronically limited) Peak power output: 619hp / Range: up to 357 miles / Price: from £111,905 OTR Launch date: summer 2022
