October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Manchester is home to The Nightingale Centre and Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre - a hub for research, training and diagnostics, based at Wythenshawe Hospital - The Genesis mission is to create a breast cancer-free future for the next generation. A key area of risk reduction is a healthy lifestyle. The Genesis researchers pioneered the now popular 5:2 diet. By eating a balanced, Mediterranean-style diet for five days, then limiting food intake for two days, people are seeing a reduction in body fat. See pages 18 and 19 for more information. For all you foodie’s – Croma is now open in Didsbury, Victor’s (inspired by the Hamptons) is now open in Hale – read more on page 59 – and Marco Pierre White is to open Marco’s New York Italian in MediaCityUK - more on page 49. Enjoy and we’ll be back with you in December.

Victor’s celebrated its launch in style when it opened the doors to public and press. The elegant eaterie, situated on Ashley Road in the leafy south Manchester suburb of Hale, is owned by Karina and James Hitchen, the powerhouse duo behind Spinningfields’ chic celeb haunt Neighbourhood and barbecue hotspot, Southern Eleven. The restaurant’s casual fine dining gives diners the opportunity to enjoy contemporary cuisine and delicious drinks in a relaxed and stylish setting. The bright seaside menu presents America’s flamboyant take on international cuisine, crafted by the city’s most coveted chefs with local premium produce and the finest hand-picked ingredients.

Suburban diners can revel in a selection of scrumptious breakfasts, with fresh fruit, pancakes, and eggs benedict before moving on to create lavish lunches and delectable dinner-time dishes of fresh seafood, scattered sushi and grilled meats. Signature dishes include the daily Bento Box of sublime sushi rice, fennel and cucumber with miso soup (£16) and the lunchtime Lobster Taco with pickled apple and avocado mayonnaise (£10), as well as the succulent, unforgettable Porterhouse Steak (£60). The dessert menu is bursting with tantalising treats, from fruit-infused sweets such as Blueberry and almond cake (£7.50) and Apple cherry pie (£5), to heavenly creations such as the Chocolate pave with miso ice cream and brown sugar

marshmallow (£7). The Victor’s bar menu boasts extraordinary cocktails with funfair flavours and explosive bubbles, with quirky snacks alongside worldly wines, spirits and opulent champagnes. Celebrity designer Nadine Marabi has created stylish bespoke uniforms for the Victor’s team, including their own custom-made crest. Karina Hitchen, Victor’s creative director, is excited about the future and is looking forward to people experiencing what they have on offer. She says: “We’re delighted to be launching our first suburban venue in Hale. We have an impeccable team and we can’t wait to showcase our new restaurant with its creative menu, cocktails and atmosphere!” www.victorshale.co.uk

DIDSBURY MUMS INSPIRED BY LOSS, WIN ‘BEST NEW BUSINESS IDEA’ COMPETITION

Sophia Lucop-Leech and Helen Lawson went into business together to develop a range of helpful bereavement gifts after experiencing their own personal loss. Sophia’s husband, Mark, died last year aged just 42 and Helen’s brother Andrew died at the age of 33 in 2000. Having to arrange funerals themselves the friends understood how important that day can be for the grieving process. Their own experiences inspired them to create www.inspiredgoodbyes.co.uk, an online resource that gives families advice and ideas on how to make funerals more personal. They began work in January

this year, and after working for many months in Sophia’s dining room they entered a competition organised by the Stockport Business Innovation Centre. The prize was free office space for a year and a business support package. After presenting their idea in a Dragons’ Den-style pitch, the pair went on to win the competition and moved into their new office space in Reddish at the end of August.

Their first product, Your Personal Goodbye, gives friends and families an opportunity to send a private message with their loved one and is being sold online and through funeral directors now. They also have a jewellery range and a set of original bereavement cards coming soon.

CELEBRITY CHEF STEPS UP THE GRILL AT BBQ FUNDRAISER Celebrity chef and co-presenter of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch programme, Simon Rimmer was cooking on gas at Francis House Children’s Hospice’s new beach hut, as he joined young people and staff at the launch of the charity’s Big BBQ fundraiser. Throughout August, Francis House Children’s Hospice, which helps children from across Greater Manchester, asked supporters to invite their friends around for a barbecue in exchange for a donation to the charity. Simon, whose restaurant Greens in Didsbury has held several fundraising events for Francis House, said: “A lot of people have no idea that Francis House exists, so if we get the chance as a local business to help raise a bit of money and equally to raise awareness of this tremendous set-up, then that’s a bonus.” In the summer, the hospice, which provides a fun and relaxing environment for children and young people with life-limiting conditions to spend valuable time with their

families, opened a new seven-bedroom extension for teenagers and young adults. Jaclyn Ollerenshaw, whose three-year-old daughter Willow has congenital muscular dystrophy, said the support provided by Francis House has been life-changing for the whole family. She said: “It can be a lonely world once you get a diagnosis and you’re constantly on the go. To come here and meet other parents and know that everyone is trained takes the pressure off and gives us all a chance to relax. It’s great for Willow but it’s also been a massive help for Willow’s brother Nick. He’s seven now and just starting to realise that family life isn’t the same for everyone but here he gets to mix with other children living in similar situations, which is great.” Despite the rainy August weather the barbecue campaign raised hundreds of pounds for the Didsbury-based charity.

TAXI PULL FOR ST ANN’S HOSPICE One of Manchester's slowest taxi rides became a quick way to raise money for charity. It took three hours for cabbies to pull a cab from Didsbury village to Albert Square in the city centre in aid of two local charities. Organiser Ian Reid said: "A lot of taxi drivers are out of shape, so this was a way of highlighting the need for them to get fit and raise money for two deserving causes.

"St Ann's Hospice is such an important part of the community, while Lancasterian School does tremendous work for pupils with special needs. It was the most tiring trip I've had along Wilmslow Road but well worth the effort.” This was just the latest fitness challenge undertaken by Manchester Taxi Aid, a charity set up by Ian and colleague John Consterdine.

Testing one two, testing one two – this is a live radio broadcast, do not adjust your wireless! Okay, so that wasn’t really what it was like, but last month I spent some time at Radio Manchester learning from some of MediaCityUK’s finest talk show hosts about what it takes to be a radio presenter. To those of you outside the industry, let me tell you, even if you can talk a lot on the telly, this doesn’t qualify you as the next Chris Evans. The two disciplines couldn’t be more different. Since then, I’ve found myself listening in a very different way. For a start, you’ve got to be the master of the ad lib. Take Radio Manchester's Drive Time programme, for example, a three-hour show where the running order can change so frequently (due to breaking or developing news) that you have to be able to fill time whenever required. A testament to their main host, Phil Trow, is his ability to change gear from talking about music, popular culture and chit chat, to hard-core news and current affairs at the drop of a hat. Sounds almost obvious but having mainly worked in TV, suddenly I’m hit by a glaring realisation. If you want to climb to the top of the broadcasting tree, you have to be able to turn your hand to a variety of different mediums. While telly is fun for its so-called 'glitz and glamour' and for the element of smoke and mirrors, I’m now becoming enticed by the magnetic appeal of the airwaves. There’s a whole new level of satisfaction brought about by its immediacy and ability to lay bare your personality, leaving little room to hide. Ultimately, it’s your listeners who determine your fate. Do you have enough spark to keep them with you or will they roll their eyes, switch you off and refuse to tune in ever again?

Jacey Normand Presenter/Reporter BBC1

Radio, on the other hand, removes this luxury. What really matters is whether you have the gravitas to captivate your audience. Growing up we’re often told that it’s not how you look but what’s inside that counts, and I believe radio encapsulates this in its purest form. In order to succeed you need to work on your chat and continue digging deep to engage an invisible audience. These are skills that I believe could be applied to everyday life, making us much more colourful characters. What’s more, if I could crack this challenge, perhaps I’d have discovered my true vocation. After all, for a chatterbox like me, what could be more enticing than a job where I actually get paid to talk for hours on end? As long as there aren’t any web cams anywhere in the studio, you don’t even need to apply a stitch of make-up! How has it taken me this long for the penny to drop? Right then – where do I sign!

Generally, we’re a fickle bunch when it comes to making judgements based on the way people look, and by default, TV could be accused of taking this to the extreme. Doors can be pushed open based on appearance and may even remain tirelessly ajar for the ‘almost’ or ‘vaguely’ talented. 9

WEST DIDSBURY’S GURKHA GRILL RAISES £1,500 FOR ABF, THE SOLDIER’S CHARITY Restaurateur Raj Basnet’s connections to the British Army’s Brigade of Gurkhas extends beyond a shared Nepalese ancestry, as his father and great-grandfather were both Gurkhas in the Nepalese and Indian armies, respectively. A fundraising day, which involved some of Raj’s deliciously innovative signature dishes, raised £1,500 for the soldiers’ charity and continued the restaurant’s long tradition of helping deserving causes. The presentation of the cheque was attended by a small troop of Gurkhas – not something you see every day on Burton Road! Well done to Gurkha Grill and all its generous patrons who continue to support this well-established and leading West Didsbury restaurant.

WORKING TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER, ONE STEP AT A TIME Manchester has been at the forefront of the battle against breast cancer for decades. The city is home to The Nightingale and Genesis Prevention Centre, based at Wythenshawe Hospital – a hub for research, training and diagnostics, and the first of its kind in Europe when it was built in 2007. It’s home to Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention, the only charity in the UK that is entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer. The charity’s work on gene research and reducing risk is helping to change the face of the fight against breast cancer. As a charity funded entirely by donations, Genesis has a regular presence on the north west charitable events calendar. As this magazine went to press, it was about to hold its annual fundraising ball – this year dubbed The Wonderland Ball. The ball is now in its fourth year and has raised over £200,000 for the charity in that time. Hosted by comedienne Pauline Daniels, who herself was recently treated for breast cancer, this year’s ball promises to be exceptional, with entertainers, an auction and guest speakers set to wow the crowds. Sally Dynevor – who plays Sally Webster in ITV’s Coronation Street – is one of the charity’s patrons and is among those due to speak on the evening of the ball, to be 18

held at Lancashire County Cricket Club on Saturday 11 October. The Wonderland Ball was created to evoke memories of Alice’s visit to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, in line with the charity’s tea party fundraising initiative for 2014, which encourages people to hold Genesis tea parties to raise money. Nikki Barraclough, Executive Director at Genesis, said: “The Genesis Tea Party initiative has been a runaway success, with parties held all over the region. It’s a simple idea, asking people to gather their friends for a cup of tea, a slice of cake and a good old natter, while donating a sum to the charity. “The Genesis mission is to create a breast cancer-free future for the next generation by predicting which women are most at risk and researching ways of lowering it in order to prevent these women from developing breast cancer. One in ten women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime – our aim is to make one in ten, none in ten.” A key area for risk reduction is a healthy lifestyle.

Genesis’ researchers pioneered the only clinically proven 5:2 diet This groundbreaking work began in 2006, and in 2013 they launched The 2-Day Diet – followed by The 2-Day Diet Cookbook and The Quick and Easy edition in 2014. Written by two of its researchers, dietician Dr Michelle Harvie and Professor Tony Howell, the books explain the science behind intermittent fasting and provide meal planners and recipes. More than 292,000 copies of the books have been sold, with proceeds going back to Genesis to fund additional research. Dr Harvie explained: “Maintaining a healthy weight is proven to be one of the most beneficial things people can do to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. However, despite our best efforts, many of us struggle to lose weight and then – crucially – stay slimmer. The 2-Day Diet has been shown to help more people to lose weight than standard daily dieting by changing the way they approach food. “By eating a balanced,

Mediterranean-style diet for five days and then limiting intake to a diet that includes healthy protein-foods like fish and chicken, vegetable and low-fat dairy foods, and nuts for the other two days a week, people will see a reduction in body fat. Approximately one third of the population is obese and another third overweight. This leads to problems with heart disease, diabetes, dementia and an increase in some cancers, including those of the colon and breast. We know that losing weight can prevent these diseases, which is why we put The 2-Day Diet together. “The diet is designed so you don’t feel hungry – it’s all about changing people’s lifelong approach to food,” explained Dr Harvie. “It won’t be sustainable if people go hungry two days a week and that’s when you’ll find people regaining weight they have already lost. Instead, it’s about the kinds of food you eat, creating a diet rich in protein, Omega 3 acids and vegetables.” For more information, visit www.genesisuk.org.

LONDON FASHION WEEK

HAIR BY DAMIEN PEERS AT SASSOON

‘Simple and chic, yet modern’ For spring/summer 2015 Edeline Lee’s collection took us on a stroll through a magical, cacophonous house of colour. Inspired by the process of restoring and decorating her Victorian house in East London, Edeline paid close consideration to the finish, with use of colour, composition of space and attention to detail. Graphic foiled stripes, fringes and effortless draped folds combine with wonderfully evocative colours to create a structured yet feminine collection for the future lady. The hair look created by Damien Peers, Creative Director at Sassoon, took on a simple yet modern feeling. The look focused on tousled waves, which were swept back from the face and worn loose. Commenting on the look, Damien says: “The hair for Edeline’s collection was about a chic and effortless dreaminess – pretty lengths were left soft and loose for a sultry yet care-free attitude.”

GET THE LOOK Apply a spray conditioner, such as Sassoon Professional, Halo Hydrate (£17.40) to retain sleekness and prevent hair from becoming frizzy. Wrap small sections of hair around a styling wand in different directions to ensure a loose, lived-in finish. Once you’ve curled every section and they have cooled, unclip, and using the full length of your fingers and palms, rub down the mid-lengths and ends. Finish with a light mist of Sassoon Professional, Motion Hold (£13.30) for flexible hold. Top tip: “Use a minimal amount of product – it’s more sensual,” says Damien.

Q&A

on shoulder problems

Mark Webber FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interest in Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery Leah Macauley Lead MSK Physiotherapist Manchester Physio www.manchesterphysio.co.uk

with Mark Webber and Leah Macauley Are you experiencing pain when you attempt to throw objects or use a hammer?

Are you getting pain when you go to bed at night, often disturbing or even preventing your sleep?

Mark says Pain shooting down the upper arm from the shoulder and often associated with lifting weights above head height or repetitive activities such as swinging a hammer can be caused by damage to the anchorage point of the biceps tendon in the shoulder, often known as a SLAP lesion. These injuries often afflict the young and sporty types and will often lead to requiring keyhole surgery

Mark says Aching pain in the shoulder, often keeping you awake at night, can often be caused by an inflamed or torn rotator cuff tendon. This is often amenable to physiotherapy and injection therapy, but can also require surgical repair.

Leah says From a physiotherapist’s viewpoint, pain when throwing an object can be due to either insufficient muscular control causing extra movement to occur in the shoulder and structures to catch, or inherent instability in the ligaments or labrum. Structural issues often need surgical intervention but maximising muscular control throughout the action of throwing can lead to some great results, especially if the main cause is muscular.

24

Leah says Night pain gives the medical professional an idea of how irritable the problem is. Pain that wakes you up will often not just disappear by itself and need a physiotherapist’s or shoulder specialist’s opinion to get to the root cause. Common night-pain indicates problems with the rotator cuff, frozen shoulders, or nerve problems coming from the neck but giving you shoulder pain. Cannot get your arm away from your side or reach behind your back? Mark says These are common signs of a ‘Frozen Shoulder’, known technically as capsulitis. The natural history is for these to slowly get better spontaneously, but the time can vary from between six months and two to three years. A stiff shoulder could also be caused by arthritis for which you may just need physiotherapy or injections, but may lead to the need for a joint replacement.

1-25:Oct_Nov_2014 01/10/2014 01:10 Page 25

Here is a list of our Affiliated Practitioners Leah says Restricted movement in the way described above is most certainly an issue with the joint due to arthritis but more commonly a frozen shoulder. Stretching out of the joint by a therapist is needed to try and regain normal use of the arm as soon as possible, and a good home-exercise programme is required. Had a heavy fall onto your hand or shoulder and you are gradually developing more pain? Mark says Most times that we fall, there is thankfully, little damage done. However, from time-to-time the injury is more severe and could lead to a fracture (break), or a soft tissue injury such as a frozen shoulder or rotator cuff tear. Therefore, should pain after a fall be very severe, or persist for a protracted period, you may need our help. Leah says A fall can cause just a simple soft tissue injury and bruising, more damage to the bones and ligaments, or tears of the muscles. If your pain is getting worse, it is more likely that medical input is needed to help with the recovery of the arm. Almost all problems can be resolved or significantly improved with physiotherapy or orthopaedic input. We at The Manchester Orthopaedic Group have the experience, expertise and resources available to treat your orthopaedic problems. We have a wide range of treatments and therapies available as well as surgery should it be required. We also have an extensive group of affiliate physiotherapy practitioners who all work to high quality and ethical standards to ensure that you’ll get the best treatment available when you come to us.

ELAINE IS ONE OF THE FIRST TO HAVE NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART CATARACT EYE SURGERY Elaine Matthews has become one of the first people to have a LENSAR™ femtosecond laser cataract procedure, offering unsurpassed accuracy and precision for cataract treatment. Elaine, aged 71, was struggling to drive at night due to her poor vision; she suffered from cloudiness and tired eyes due to cataracts in both eyes – a condition that affects one in three people aged over 65 years old. She chose to have cataract treatment, as clear vision was essential for her to continue driving. Elaine’s surgeon, Mr Shafiq Rehman, recommended femtosecond laser cataract surgery with customised treatment, following the recent investment in LENSAR at all Optegra’s UK hospitals, including Optegra Manchester Eye Hospital. Mr Rehman explained: “LENSAR is truly state-of-the-art. It uses laser-assisted technology, which provides advanced 3-D imaging of the eye, and this 3-D view gives surgeons much more accurate information during the cataract lens removal, ensuring a procedure that is completely customised to each individual eye. This means we can tailor the treatment and operation more precisely than ever before. “A further benefit is that the system makes removing the natural lens of the eye easier and more efficient. We firmly believe this is the future of cataract surgery.” For Elaine, this meant a smooth solution to her cataract problem. She said: “I was fed up of my eyes getting so tired and was even struggling with reading and watching television. I have had cataracts for quite some time but they have been getting worse and worse so my optician recommended I went to Optegra.

“I have worn contact lenses and glasses since I was in my 40s, even to the point of having one contact lens for distance and one for close-up. But as my eyes got worse I knew something had to be done about it – it was essential that I could still drive and be able to visit my three daughters. “So I had my cataract treatment, and at my follow-up, Mr Rehman said my vision is very good now – and I can even read the smallest line on the vision chart!” Optegra is the first eye hospital group to invest in LENSAR across all its UK hospitals.

Winning naturally with

Julie Neville How to avoid the winter blues

Summer has come to an end, the nights are drawing in and we enter the winter season. While images of bonfires, trick-or-treating children and Christmas presents fill us with anticipation and excitement, unfortunately, this season often brings with it the winter blues – coughs, colds and the dreaded flu.

My all-time favourite winter-warming and system-boosting drink has to be chamomile tea with a good heaped teaspoon of manuka honey. This unique active ingredient is known as UMF. The higher the UMF of the honey the more potent the honey and its powers. Anti-bacterial and anti-viral, it is a great addition to food and drinks to boost the immune system – you can even rub it onto wounds to prevent infection and speed up healing.

Chamomile tea is fantastic at providing a sense of calm and wellbeing as well as aiding digestion. It eases insomnia and anxiety and boosts the immune system. As for manuka honey, this is one of my favourite super foods, which is most certainly a healing food. Manuka honey contains an extra naturally occurring active ingredient compared to regular honey and this is not destroyed when exposed to heat, light or dilution.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, one in 100 people suffers from Season Affective Disorder or SAD – a form of depression that tends to occur from September through to April. While there are a range of treatments for SAD, it has become more and more apparent that there are huge benefits of certain foods in treating and preventing this condition: Oranges – most people link oranges to vitamin C, but they are also rich in folate, which is thought to be important to enhance moods, and like vitamin B12 thought to play a role in the creation of serotonin – the brain’s happy chemical. Nuts and seeds – contain selenium, thought to prevent depression and aid mental health. Wholegrain cereals – such as wholegrain bread, oats and brown rice, are all high in vitamin B12, which raises serotonin. They also provide excellent slow release energy and prevent dips in blood sugar, which alone will leave you tired, irritable and lacking in concentration. Protein-rich foods – such as beef, chicken, turkey, fish and cheese, are all naturally rich in tryptophan, which also increases serotonin levels. Eggs – the omega 3 fatty acids found in eggs are natural mood lifters and may even help alleviate depression. Eggs are also full of phospholipids, which allow nutrients to pass into the brain more effectively, thus maintaining memory and brain function. Oily fish is another great source of omega 3. Chocolate – never fails to make me feel better! But remember to stick to dark chocolate with a high cocoa content – aim for over 70%. There are some fabulous raw and organic chocolates available now that are both delicious and nutritious.

Julie’s Product of the Month BetterYou VitDLux Spray A lack of vitamin D has been linked to depression and studies have shown that the majority of people living in the UK are deficient in this vital vitamin. 29

“Absolutely delighted” was Mike Hayton’s response when OrthTeam members were invited to speak at TherapyExpo – the UK’s leading exhibition for physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other clinical therapists who treat people with sports injuries and other joint and soft tissue problems. Mike was thrilled because it gave him and his 11 OrthTeam colleagues the opportunity to share some of their specialist knowledge with other practitioners and to get to meet them face to face, so they could jointly debate the pros and cons of different techniques. He says: “Medicine is a science we all look at from different angles; discussing why we choose to recommend a certain path of care – be it surgery or a non-surgical intervention such as physiotherapy – ensures we all have a better understanding of each other’s priorities and especially those of the person who’s asked for our care.” Matt Ravenscroft, a Consultant Shoulder Surgeon who delivered a lecture on the care of people with stiff shoulders, said he knows how much he benefits from working with expert clinical therapists and wanted to share with others his experience of successful multidisciplinary CY Ng chats with Claire Downs, practice. Matt’s advice on treating people with a stiff shoulder includes the following: •

Matt Ravenscroft Consultant Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon T. 0161 495 6803

Frozen shoulder is a common cause of shoulder stiffness and is caused by a thickening of the lining of the shoulder joint. The main symptoms are pain and stiffness – initially, pain is the main problem and this is the ‘freezing’ phase; stiffness then becomes the more problematic ‘frozen’ phase. It can take up to three years to ‘thaw out’.

• Adam Watts Consultant Elbow, Hand & Upper Limb Surgeon T. 01625 545 073 30

In the vast majority of cases there is no obvious cause for a frozen shoulder - it just happens. Women in their 30s and 40s are most commonly affected.

If the condition is caught early in the ‘freezing’ phase, an injection of steroid followed by physiotherapy may stop development of a full-blown frozen shoulder.

Surgery is a good option for some people. This can be done arthroscopically (keyhole surgery) and has the benefit of helping the surgeon to directly identify and treat any causative factors for the condition. In some cases, manipulation of the shoulder joint while under general anaesthetic is all that is required. After surgery it is important that a course of immediate and intensive physiotherapy (to maintain the increased range of movement) is undertaken.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Here at Trevor Sorbie we understand that

your hair needs to look great every day, not just when you leave the salon. Kerastraight is an in-salon treatment that revolutionises your hair in just one application. Our specialist team members can tailor your results to the individual needs of your hair and lifestyle. By gently infusing and sealing the hair with blends of keratin and proteins, the hair is repaired, strengthened and protected. In the coming winter months as the weather worsens, kerastraight forms a barrier, protecting the hair from moisture and stopping fluffiness and frizz. Though the treatment lasts an average of four to five months, it leaves the hair gently so you get no visible regrowth as your natural hair comes through. Kerastraight is compatible with all colour services and you leave the salon with your hair styled however you like; there is no three-day wait period as is often assumed.

For a full hair analysis, and details of how the kerastraight treatment can help you, please call the salon on 0161 839 2255 Trevor Sorbie. 19 Spring Gardens, Manchester M2 1FB

Inspirational Ellie Simmonds dives in at the deep end and reveals the secret of her success (spoiler alert: it involves a lot of hard work – and water!) I’m not normally a fan of ‘To do’ lists, but British Paralympian Swimmer Ellie Simmonds’ ‘To do and already done’ list is worth a look: 4 Paralympic Gold medals 13 World Championship Gold medals 7 European Championship Gold medals Currently has ten world records to her name. Youngest-ever recipient of the MBE at 14; she now possesses the OBE, too Youngest-ever winner of BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year at 14 Oh, and did I mention that she’s still a teenager and has the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics to come before even pausing to reflect on the above?

Ellie Simmonds is an Active Kids ambassador for Sainsbury’s and helps inspire children to live healthy and active lifestyles. Sainsbury’s has donated £150m of experiences and equipment since Active Kid began in 2005, and now has 53,000 registered schools and organisations. For more information please visit www.sainsburys.co.uk/activekids

Ellie Simmonds is clearly no ordinary woman but that list belies the disarmingly humble, warm and refreshingly ordinary young person that she is in person. I caught up with Ellie when she was in town to support the Sainsbury’s School Games for which Ellie is an ambassador, in the delicious environs of Didsbury’s Gusto restaurant. Born in Walsall, Ellie became aware of her difference at primary school when her medical condition, achondroplasia dwarfism, saw her peers gradually getting taller than her. She describes herself as just being shorter than most and doesn’t let it bother her. Surrounded by a loving environment of family and friends she was encouraged to participate in all activities, and her innate competitiveness soon came to the fore, as did her ability to swim like a fish! After competing in mainstream swimming competitions she was talent-spotted by British Swimming and made the incredibly brave decision to relocate, with her mother, to Swansea, where her swimming training was to take place. A brutal training regime that averages 18 hours over eight sessions a week and starting in a new secondary school hardly fazed her as she, quite literally, made the leap from the starting block to the medal podium. Her can-do attitude plus the hard work she puts in, which is the equal of

any able-bodied swimmer’s training, has seen her elevated to the superstar status she now routinely deals with as though it were second nature to her. She’s a terrific advocate for the British Paralympic Association’s great work and is one of its leading lights. She is, naturally, focused on winning but not at all costs, and it is quite remarkable how she’s managed to retain a level-headed outlook on her spectacular success thus far. Ellie’s now encouraging school children of all abilities and skills to get out and be active in her ambassadorial role for Sainsbury’s Active Kids programme. As she says: “If I can do it, then anyone can,” and she certainly provides a compelling argument. When I asked her about her opponents’ prospects for victory, her reply nicely epitomised this extraordinary young woman’s profound belief in the power of will and commitment: “If you have a lane, you have a chance.” Our thanks to Sainsbury’s Active Kids and Gusto, Didsbury, for their kind assistance. TRAVEL VILLARS

THE ALPINE SPIRIT OF

VILLARS

Feasting on gourmet cuisine, skiing on groomed slopes, and taking a skidoo ride to a mountain retreat, are some of the reasons why Villars is so special, reviews Jill Nash. STAY Villars is a polished ski resort with a long pedigree and it’s easy to see why celebrities chose Villars to escape from the nearby overcrowded Verbier. There are excellent hotels, very fine dining both on the slopes and in the village, and it's all within easy reach of Geneva airport - making weekend breaks easy. The combination of reasonably extensive skiing and choice of excellent schools also make it an ideal destination for family ski holidays. Chalet RoyAlp and Spa is a distinctive five-star luxury chalet hotel set in the midst of Villars offering charming rustic styled rooms, with terraces overlooking the alpine region.

The owners have tried to combine luxury, modernity and Swiss tradition - and it works. As a member of the Small Leading Hotels of the World, with a recently upgraded spa area (including a glittering fireplace) no expense is spared. It is also the first ski-in ski-out hotel in the Vaudoise Alpes, offering a direct access to the ski resorts in winter and the golf club throughout the summer, making it a convenient choice for families, couples and groups of friends. Standard double rooms start at £381 per night. www.royalp.ch

DINE Foodies will be spoilt rotten, from the modest Swiss cheese fondue, to gastronomically fine dining. On a recent visit Heston Blumenthal raved about the traditional Swiss food and fine wine in Villars, and he isn’t the first celebrity to enjoy the region. A range of incredible dining experiences also await the hungry skier, the most unusual being the hair-raising skidoo ride to Refuge de Solalex, which is not to be missed. It’s a typical mountain retreat: roaring fires, rustic cuisine, and traditional cheese raclette melted over an open fire, with meats and bread dipped in fondue. www.refugesolalex.ch Le Peppino, the brainchild of chef Joel Quentin creates gastronomical dinner with the use of local herbs and plants – he has even written a guide, Le Jardin des Alpes, cooking with wild herbs, and diners can expect a delectable feast of dishes decorated with edible plants. www.eurotel-victoria.ch/villars/ For a spectacular high-altitude mountain lunch on the slopes, head to Refuge de l’Espace, located on Glacier 3000. You can dine on platters of local cheese, cooked meats and local bread, washed down with some wine, while the bearded vultures circle above you. www.refugelespace.ch

EXPLORE Villars is located in the heart of the Vaud Alps and offers unrivalled skiing for all levels, and for non-skiers there is plenty of relaxation and culture. It’s a perfect destination for mixed-ability groups whose strongest skiers want some excitement nearly as much as the rest want a good lunch – and perfect for spring skiers with its sunshine and snow. The 77 ski lifts and 220km of trails of the Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets and Glacier 3000 ski area mean you can leave and return to the resort with your skis on your feet, having skied from the 3,000-metre glacier all the way back to the village. An ice-rink, a sledge run, snow-shoeing, winter walking, a cog railroad, a sports centre and other attractions provide a variety of interesting activities and alternatives for non-skiers. There are plenty of events throughout the year in Villars, but for live music the Ski and Snow Fiesta, held in the spring, is one of the highlights of the calendar. www.skisnowfiesta.ch In summer, outdoor lovers can enjoy 300km of marked hiking trails and 150km of all-terrain bicycle trails of charming countryside and protected natural beauty of the area. Three high-altitude lakes and numerous alpine farms (serving breakfast cooked on wood fires and demonstrating cheese making) offer a unique experience for summer hikers. In addition, an 18-hole golf course allows golfers to enjoy their sport at an altitude of 1,600m. For more information on Villars, visit www.villars.ch

FINANCIAL PLANNING WEEK - 23rd - 29th November There seems to be a special week for everything these days... but this one may prove important for you and your financial future ! Life is so busy for many of us. We all have good intentions – to clear out the garage, to start that language course, to walk to work every day instead of drive - but often we just don’t have the time or inclination to actually get round to it. So, more pressingly, (whilst the messy garage isn’t going anywhere or the car’s quicker than walking), when was the last time you thoroughly reviewed your financial situation? Sometimes being lethargic with your finances can be a costly business! So, how do you start? There may be so many questions... how to find an experienced financial adviser, how much will it cost, can a financial adviser help with your situation? This week is an opportunity to meet with and have your questions answered by a professional planner. You may have found the same issue when choosing a solicitor, accountant or any other professional.

The most important thing is to find an adviser that you feel happy to speak to, share your dreams and aspirations with and who you feel you can build a trusting relationship with. During Financial Planning Week, we are offering a free half hour consultation with one of our friendly, qualified advisers. These surgeries are a chance for you to meet with us and get answers to your queries. Some of the questions we regularly get asked are: Are my financial plans on track? Will I be able to retire when I want to? How do the new pension rules affect me? I have 4 pensions but I don’t know anything about them. Can you help? What is Inheritance Tax and will it affect me?

The value of investments can go down as well as up. Past performance is no indicator of future returns. This article is correct at time of print, and does not constitute advice. Hidden in plain view… There is a long-held myth that all lawyers are more closely related to apex predators such as sharks and lions than the rest of us, but having met Chris Bishop, Managing Partner at Slater Heelis last week, I now know that this view may be true of some, but definitely not of him and his team. Chris is married with three children between the ages of 10 and 20 and has a genuine love of sport and community work. Since Chris became a Partner at Sale and Manchester-based law firm Slater Heelis in 1998, he has always encouraged staff and clients to get involved in charitable and community work. This year the team at Slater Heelis, spearheaded by Chris, have really worked on what they believe is their corporate responsibility to actively support their community and have put their money where their mouth is. This includes donating kits for a local football team, sponsoring Timperley Junior football league, giving money to fund a kit for Lymm Cricket club’s under-14s, as well as sponsorships of Altrincham FC, Wilmslow Rugby Football Club, and one of Manchester’s up-and-coming premier league sporting clubs, the Manchester Giants basketball team. This level of involvement is on the back of understanding that all sport from the grass-roots level to elite/ professional standards has a massive part to play in any local community. Chris said, “Sport brings people together; it engages young and old alike. It can teach our young people about teamwork and striving to achieve goals and objectives. 38

I’ve always understood that being a solicitor puts me in the fortunate position of being able to help other people.” “Nevertheless, I’ve always wanted to do more than just apply the law to help others. Working with sporting clubs and charities has allowed me and the team at Slater Heelis to better understand where we live and the people we serve.” Along with all the sport-related community work Chris and the Slater Heelis team support, the practice also have a more traditional charitable focus.

This is led by the example set by various members of the management team, as trustees and fundraisers for local and national charities. These are as varied as HUGS (a charity that supports schools in Uganda and Rwanda) www.helpingugandaschools.org, Friends of Rosie (a Manchester centric children’s cancer charity), www.friendsofrosie.co.uk, Henshaws Society for Blind People (based in Trafford), www.henshaws.org.uk as well as the more mainstream charities the team donate to via annual events such as Genes for Jeans days and numerous cake sales. Asked if all these extra commitments meant he and his team never had any spare time, Chris just laughed and told me: “If something’s worth doing, you will always find the time.” It was heartwarming to meet a man and a business leader who seems to understand his and his firm’s place in the world and who is keen that we all put something back into our communities.

If you’d like any more information on any of the charities or community groups Slater Heelis support, please email the team at intouch@slaterheelis.co.uk

Full circle No prizes for guessing which hack failed to identify the super-fit, skinny superman Vikas Shah, now 33. As that distinctly overweight Stockport Grammar bizz-whizz-kid she'd featured in MEN in 1997 – not that he remembered her either!

‘Entrepreneurship not only drives innovation and change, but offers economies their largest source of philanthropy.’ What’s an entrepreneur? A buzzword for anyone passionate about making an income selling –from kids flogging their bracelets, to market traders and CEOs of large concerns. Success, whatever your criteria, is never guaranteed, but despite constant stress, the freedom and fun are liberating. I've never had a job. Without a business, I might well be unemployable! You started at 14 and by 16 had a 30-strong workforce worldwide. Apparently, age was no deterrent. My online publishing business designed websites for the Queen's Jubilee, Nike and Unilever.

When the dotcom bubble burst we sold off whatever possible and wound down. At university I joined and began expanding dad's textile firm. Any advice? Ensure you’ve a 'co-pilot' – a human sounding board for matters you can't discuss with staff or the bank. Can entrepreneurship be taught? It can be nurtured and encouraged, hence our entrepreneur ‘incubators’ in Spinningfields, Manchester Science Park and Alderley. Universities expound theories but business itself is the teacher. My Lisbon role is about complementing students’ theoretical input with insights into business management and practice. And commerce today? It’s exciting. Bank and government funding for start-ups plus technology make setting up and running firms easier, and there’s online help for people wanting a full-time remote business, a work supplement or some way of investing their spare cash. Remember: If you fall into something you really enjoy, that passion stays. My work‘s never felt anything but fun.

Keeping it simple It was raining outside and I was tucked up on the sofa with Ted, my new, needy (and complete nightmare) rescue hound. We were watching ‘Roman Holiday’ together and eating cheesy Doritos. Audrey Hepburn was being wonderful on screen and I started to muse on what her style was and why it was so successful and covetable. And the word ‘simplicity’ came to mind. Everything she wore was pared down - a little black dress and diamond earrings summed her up. No need for embellishments. Lately, I have been exploring this simpler style, particularly in front gardens where a more formal approach is preferable. The influential garden designers Russell Page and John Brookes both adhered to the maxim of ‘less is more’, going so far as to say that once you have compiled your list of plants you should then halve the number of varieties and double up on those that remain. It’s the equivalent of the little black dress, paring it all down. Colour is a good place to start. Imagine Ms Hepburn in a jazzy flowery jumper with multicoloured striped leggings – doesn’t work does it? But imagine her in a black turtleneck with white Capri pants – suddenly cool sophistication is being channelled. So I’m a big fan of limited colour schemes for front gardens, small courtyards and for clients who want a more contemporary feel for their rear gardens. Limiting the number of colours used in the garden also has the added benefit of making it easier to choose plants that will go well together.

One of my current favourite colour schemes is to use various shades of green with touches of white, cream and blue, set against a grey or black backdrop. On a recent front garden and driveway project we have painted the front door and all the fencing black - very smart. The inexpensive block driveway looks very sophisticated (and expensive) in grey block with inserts of black setts to give detail. The pots are all glossy black, with topiary privet lollipops surrounded by dainty white variegated ivies to soften. The clipped border planting is in shades of green with creamy baubles of Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ and white Japanese anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ providing pops of fluffiness to contrast. It’s the horticultural equivalent of a garden wearing a little black dress and pearls. In a rear garden we recently put in, the brief was green and yellow – now there’s a cheerful colour scheme!

We sourced lots of yellow shrubs, such as variegated holly Ilex ‘Golden King’ and Choisya ‘Sundance’ and a huge assortment of yellow perennials to flower throughout the year, from Aquilegia ‘Yellow Queen‘ in April, to the daisies of Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’ in late summer. Whenever I go back and look out of the window I almost gasp with the overwhelming exuberance and energy of it all. The doorbell goes and in walks J. In complete contrast to all this minimal colour, my newly arrived artistic friend likes to wear every colour under the sun, and all together. Settling herself next to a blissful Ted, she trails floaty scarves, layers of patterned clothing, chunky jewellery from all four corners of the earth, and a big grin - Audrey Hepburn she is not. But I know who I’d prefer to be friends with. Anne Britt is a garden designer. Contact her for information and classes at annebritt@btinternet.com

A LIFE WITH A VIEW Brenda Deane, a resident of MediaCityUK and co-director of ‘A Life with a View’ tells us about her blossoming fragrant business creation with co-founder and friend Graham Way, which has offered her a new lease of life…

What is your first memory of scent? My mother was a wearer of the traditional German Eau de Cologne 4711 but as my childhood was spent in the midst of WW2, there was little to appreciate in terms of favourite scents. However, my friend Stanley eventually introduced me to Givenchy L'Interdit in 1958, which I went on to wear for over 45 years.

46

What does fragrance mean to you? I now have a real appreciation for fragrance and its power to evoke memories and special locations. I have always had a great love of flowers, painting watercolours and greetings cards as a hobby, so in a way this is a connection with the flowers used in fragrances. The scent of pine trees brings back happy memories of visits to Norway with my father when I was a young girl. I also spent many autumnal holidays in France, so smells of wood smoke, damp earth and chestnuts always evoke memories of this. I am very fond of rose-based scents, as well as those with lavender – they are very relaxing, and it’s wonderful this is now incorporated in the range.

as well as painting flowers. My hobby for many years was ice dancing, but it’s not suitable for me these days.

How has ‘A Life with a View’ impacted on your life as a fragrance-wearer? At the age of 83, I feel I’ve been given a new life, from my career as an accountant. Being a part of the fragrance world has given me the chance to express my creative side,

What smell reminds you of home? Each room in my home has a different scent. At the moment it’s Italy in the living room and Provence in my bedroom from the Life with a view range.

What is your favourite view? The incredible 40-mile view I have from my new apartment in MediaCityUK. From my 22nd floor I can see the Pennines, Cheshire and Wales, with the Manchester Ship Canal in the foreground, and the most amazing sunrises and sunsets. With ‘A Life with a View’ we’ve already fulfilled such a dream with creating the four views of New York, Italy, Provence and England, but it would be wonderful to create a scent that captured the Norwegian atmosphere of pine trees and the incredible fresh air of Norway.

BEN KELLY – heading for fame and fortune

26-48:Oct_Nov_2014 01/10/2014 00:51 Page 22

The 40-year-old Kerridge-based artist, Ben Kelly is nothing short of a phenomenon. He has had four major exhibitions of his work in the past two years and in each case his work has sold out weeks before the opening night. Ben trained at London’s renowned Central St Martin’s College in London, and despite his great success as an artist he still works as a senior art lecturer at a Midlands’ university. In 2006 his painting ‘The Final Whistle’ beat over 800 entrants to win the prestigious Painting in Art Prize and £15,000 in prize money. The previous winner of this competition was LS Lowry in 1953 with his iconic painting ‘Going to the Match’. Ben is a Manchester City fan and was artist in residence there during the 2007/08 season. During this period he produced a series of 30 paintings depicting a year in the life of the club at their home ground. A painting from this period was recently purchased by the National Football Museum.

Humour is one of the keys to the appeal of Ben Kelly. His quirky figurative paintings always carry a narrative; some are based on real places and events, but many are straight from his imagination. His paintings often feature people, dogs and horses, as well as scenes of ordinary life. They are essentially about light and its play on everyday scenes. The way in which he fractures light in a complex series of paint layers is the defining and recognisable mark of his work and makes him stand out as an artist. For the past 12 months Ben has been painting for his biggest oneman-show to date at Clark Art Gallery in Hale. The opening night is on Thursday 9 October and is sure to be packed out with eager buyers. Ben has produced more than seventy paintings for the show on a wide range of subjects. Gallery-owner Bill Clark anticipates a sell-out. He comments: “We’ve never known such anticipation for a show.

We have people ringing every day to go on the waiting list for one of his works. He is one of the most exciting young artists we’ve ever dealt with. His prices have tripled in the past three years, but the average painting is still affordable at around £1,800. He is undoubtedly set to achieve national fame.” Ben Kelly himself is bemused by all the fuss and attention, describing it as “a bit disconcerting, though I’m glad people enjoy my work”. You can view Ben Kelly’s work at www.clark-art.co.uk Clark Art Ltd, 155 Ashley Road, Hale, Cheshire WA14 2UW. Tel: 0161 929 5150. Email art@clark-art.co.uk 47

MARCO PIERRE WHITE TO OPEN RESTAURANT IN MANCHESTER The Godfather of modern cooking, Marco Pierre White is to open his first restaurant in the heart of Manchester’s creative and visitor destination, MediaCityUK. Located in the Holiday Inn, the new restaurant will be a Marco’s New York Italian. With 165 covers, the venue is expected to be open in October and will serve Marco’s take on American-Italian food. News on the restaurant’s opening follows a deal between Black & White Franchising and Peel’s hotel division, Tower Hotel Management, which will run the new restaurant under a franchise agreement. Black & White Franchising has partnered with Marco Pierre White to introduce his restaurant Steakhouse Bar & Grill and New York Italian brands across the UK. Part of a £200,000 front-of-house refurbishment project, work is now underway to convert the existing restaurant and bar areas. Visitors will be able to choose from a selection of fresh pastas, steaks, seafood, burgers and handmade pizzas while the restaurant will replicate the hustle and bustle of a classic New York Italian restaurant, appealing to those looking for a relaxed, fun place to eat that has the added attraction of having the provenance of Marco Pierre White. Managing Director of MediaCityUK Stephen Wild said: “This announcement is great news as it not only strengthens the appeal of the hotel but will complement the steadily growing number of restaurants and bars opening here, which is establishing MediaCityUK as a go-to leisure destination.

“The presence of a Marco Pierre White restaurant will bring an exciting vibe to the mix, and will sit well with those looking at doing business in a relaxed setting, as well as visitors taking in the many attractions on our doorstep.” Nick Taplin, managing director at Black & White Franchising, said: “We have an ambitious programme for both the New York Italian and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill concepts, so it’s great to have completed this deal and be opening our first Manchester restaurant in the heart of the exciting MediaCityUK destination. “The idea behind this restaurant is to create an environment where people can sit and enjoy their life, where diners can have a good time, and where they can enjoy traditional Italian favourites at any time of the day. “This new restaurant is all about providing a place where people can go for some nice food and a nice bottle of wine in a relaxed, affordable and friendly setting. “We want people to come here and make their visit as formal or informal, expensive or inexpensive as they wish. If a group of friends or work colleagues want a bite to eat then this is the place. Equally, business people wanting somewhere to take clients will find this the perfect venue. “People who go out to eat and spend their hard-earned money deserve excellent service and good food at an affordable price. That’s what Marco’s New York Italian is all about.” For further information visit www.mpwrestaurants.co.uk

PAUL HOLLYWOOD Director of Sales and Marketing Radisson Blu Manchester Airport Paul Hollywood is a newcomer to Manchester. He was born and raised in Glasgow, where he spent most of his career before joining Radisson at the end of June. “I have always been passionate about customer service and have always enjoyed meeting new people,” he says. “Many of my good friends started off as colleagues or clients. Although I have always been in a sales-related role, I don’t see myself as a salesperson in the traditional sense. The focus of my role is establishing and developing relationships built on integrity and trust. If I commit to something, I will move mountains to deliver to my clients.” Paul’s career shows a trend of migration to UK airports. He took up his first role as Sales & Service Manager for World Duty Free Europe at Glasgow Airport. He has always said that this was one of the best environments he has ever worked in. He then headed down the M8 motorway to another airport, this time Hilton Edinburgh Airport. As Conference & Events Sales Manager, he had responsibility for all meetings and events at this busy hotel. He spent three happy years there before transferring to the five-star Hilton Glasgow hotel. Subsequent roles took him to Hampden Scotland’s National Stadium – where he was Director of Sales, and then onto GLH Hotels, which operates the Thistle, Guoman and Amba hotel brands. He says: “In my current role, I manage all aspects of the sales and marketing function. Of course it’s a team effort and I am very lucky to have a brilliant team in place, namely Emma, Faith, Claudia and Sharon.” 50

Hollywood comes to Manchester THAT’S A FINE SCOTTISH ACCENT. WHAT BRINGS YOU TO MANCHESTER? My husband Alistair also works in the hotel industry and relocated to Manchester to take up a new role with Radisson as General Manager of the Park Inn by Radisson Manchester City Centre. We had always said we would move to another city when the time was right, so here we are. SO YOU’RE NOT THE CELEBRITY BAKER/CHEF? No, I am the younger model! Many people ask me about this, particularly with the success of the Great British Bake Off. It’s actually a great conversation starter and people find it amusing that I share an unusual name with the famous chef. I am bombarded with tweets, Facebook and Instagram messages from people who mistake me for the older Paul Hollywood. It can be amusing, with random strangers making reference to my ‘firm peaks’ or ‘sticky buns’. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLASGOW AND MANCHESTER? Not the weather! It seems to rain just as often in both cities. I think there are many similarities. Both cities have an industrial past. Now both have reinvented themselves with a focus on new technologies, science and media. The people in both cities have that true Northern spirit, and of course, a passion for having a good time. SO WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY PAUL? I’m generally in the office for 8am. After checking emails and catching up with my team, we have a hotel management

meeting at 8.45 each day and discuss guest feedback, the current day’s business, events and anything else that is important in providing a first-class experience for our guests. I am then normally preparing for and having meetings with clients either on or off site. I spend a great deal of time out of the office, but technology helps. I have an iPhone and an iPad, which give me a virtual office in my car. I can often be found in a car park or a motorway service station checking my emails before heading to my next appointment. I tend to finish round 6.30pm unless I have an evening event or meeting. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT RADISSON BLU, MANCHESTER AIRPORT Wow. Where do I start? This is such an exciting time for us. In November, we will complete an extensive £10million refurbishment. The hotel has been transformed into a contemporary and design-focused place to stay or host an event. The feedback from guests has been incredibly positive. In addition to the refurbishment, we have been working hard at enhancing our service offering and experience to our guests. Our aim is very simply to exceed the expectations of our guests and deliver a world-class service they will enjoy time and time again. We are well on our way, but there is still some work to do.

£10M REFURBISHMENT PROJECT AT THE RADISSON BLU HOTEL, MANCHESTER AIRPORT REACHES COMPLETION ONE YEAR EARLY. Phase three, the final phase of a £10m refurbishment project at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport, has reached completion a year earlier than originally planned. The work, which included a full refurbishment of 120 guest bedrooms, is the culmination of a 28-month transformation project at the hotel - the largest current hotel investment programme in the North of England. The iconic hotel, which originally opened in 1998, has now been fully restyled and refurbished with the large-scale project having touched all core elements of the property. Phase three, which was finalised in early September 2014, focused on a full restyle of 120 guest bedrooms. The rooms now boast a light and airy, contemporary look and feel. The colour palette is light and neutral with accents of striking plum. As well as providing a stylish yet comfortable space to relax, unwind and sleep; these rooms also offer guests a range of in-room amenities from multi-media adaptors and international sockets to complimentary WiFi and Free pay TV, bathrobe and slippers, and daily newspaper. In phase one and two of the project; the hotel’s reception and lobby area, restaurant and bar, 120 Business Class bedrooms and suites, 120 Superior guest rooms, and the airport’s largest functions and events area – including all 27 meeting rooms – were transformed. Additionally, the Observatory Suite was converted into a stylish Executive Lounge, complete with private reception and dedicated hotel check-in facility for Business Class room guests. There is a strong design element throughout the project. The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, now known as Collage, has doubled in size with three unique zones, creating the ideal space for social, private or individual dining and boasting panoramic airport views. Meanwhile, the little m bar, is a destination in itself, with the ambience changing throughout the day through an eclectic mix of seating, lighting and music, including live DJ’s in the evening. “This is a very significant investment for us and we’re extremely pleased with the results. We’ve completely transformed this flagship hotel and the feedback we’ve had from guests is very encouraging. It’s now a very different product to what we had before and we can now build on the positive momentum and really take this hotel from strength to strength” says Richard Moore, Carlson Rezidor, Area Vice President UK & Ireland. As well as offering the largest airport conference facilities, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport is also the only hotel with a direct link to the airport, as well as rail and coach stations. 51

Jennie McAlpine’s Annies Is a Welcome Home from Home in the Heart of the City

Coronation Street star, Jennie McAlpine, and her partner, restaurateur Chris Farr, have created a cosy little nook that harkens back to a less complicated and stressful time; when long Sunday lunches with your Aunty Annie (or Mary, or Pat, or...) were a much looked forward to treat and, after clearing your plate, you’d feel that all was well with the world. Appropriately located in the historic Royal Exchange Building, which is also synonymous with a less hectic lifestyle, the restaurant’s softly welcoming decor and hearty menu offers a reviving refuge from the stresses of the city. It’s perfectly located for shopping lunches, afternoon teas, cocktails and pre-theatre suppers and, for the early bird city folk, they can even set you up for the day with a mouth-watering English Breakfast! Annies is a family affair, with both partners’ families involved in running the restaurant and that family connection is about to expand, with the upcoming arrival of their first baby. Jennie and Chris place great stock in family life and that’s reflected in the family friendly environment of their restaurant. This is a place where you can take the whole family and just...relax!

By Mark Kureishy

Jennie’s long and popular role as Fiz Stape in Coronation Street can be traced back to her own strong family ties. Born and raised in Bury by her extremely supportive father, her determination to challenge expectations and push herself to succeed led her to stand-up comedy, which included an appearance at London’s Comedy Store at the age of 13 and coming second in the Young Comedian of the Year! Aged 17, she landed the part of Fiz and has made the character one of the best loved and popular of the current incarnation. She likens the Corrie team to a family and it’s clear that familial strength is key to her success. Similar to some other Corrie veterans, Jennie has had no formal stage training but natural talent will out and, with a great deal of determination and hard work, she has forged a very successful career as an actor. A theatre role and a one-woman revue for the Edinburgh Festival remain ambitions but her love of Coronation Street, and a new baby, will ensure that Fiz remains in our living rooms for the foreseeable future! Annies is also establishing itself for the duration, too, as they’ve now added an online service, Annies Tea Shop, in response to enquiries about where diners could purchase Annies own branded delicacies to take home. The online Tea Shop offers a range of Annies own afternoon tea delicacies, such as preserves, biscuits, cakes and even old fashioned traditional sweets!

Marrying old fashioned comforts with a 21st century lifestyle is a difficult feat to pull off but Jennie and Chris have successfully reminded us, as we relax and unwind in Annies, that much of our lost past can be used to enrich our present lives. www.anniesmanchester.co.uk (t) 0161 839 4423 www.anniesteashop.com

A day in the life of...

Emma Murray Director of Sales and Marketing at Mottram Hall

As Sales Director I manage my own diary. Having a reliable team of 10 sales staff allows me to show prospective clients round our £6million refurbished hotel, leisure complex and spa, to attend outreach meetings and to visit clients at their offices. Emma aims to reposition Mottram Hall regionally, putting it back on the map for fresh, corporate, bridal and private custom, and retaining the old. She adds: “Our makeover, brand new bedrooms, extensive conference and event facilities, leisure and spa, plus a football pitch, are now truly impressive and affordable!”

EMMA’S DAY Up at 6 am: run in the hills, feed the cat. 7am: check emails and diary 7.30am: set out for Mottram or out-of-office appointments, umpteen in-house meetings, grab a desktop lunch unless entertaining clients, lead a customer hotel inspection, plan events, update marketing social media and the website, train new staff. Back in Buxton any time from 7pm to 10pm. IN THE BLOOD Emma, her older twin sister and her brother have all inherited their caterer mother’s passion for hospitality, hotels and travel. Mottram Hall’s energetic Director of Sales, Emma explains her fascination with the hotel industry: “Every day is different, whether, like my sister you’re hands-on in hotel operations or, like me, in sales and marketing. The mental stimulation of dealing with clients face to face suits me better than the physical effort of operations, where you’re based in the hotel every day.” TRAvEL AND FUNNIES While working for Radisson in Ireland and Jumeirah in Dubai, Emma gained unique insights into foreign mind sets and lifestyles. In Limerick, Emma supervised the new-build Radisson, ensuring it was up, running and ready for punters on time.

Adopting local Dubai customs she managed an extremely polite smile when the Sheikh arrived for a property opening - six hours behind schedule! That smile re-emerged at a perfume launch when the same Sheikh upped sticks well before starters were served, leaving 700 highly disappointed, puzzled guests. TIPS When True Blue Emma landed an MUFC job in 1998, she felt obliged to defect to the Reds! Her advice for hopeful hoteliers is flexibility, adaptability, forward-planning and hard work - always with a smile. Winking she adds: “In this tight-knit industry you inevitably bump into former workmates, so never burn your bridges.” FACT FILE Born at Wythenshawe Hospital; lived in Bowdon 1985 Sixth form Altrincham Grammar School 1987-91 National and Higher BTEC: Hotel Catering and Management – South Trafford, Blackpool and Fylde FE Colleges 1992 Craig Manor Hotel, Windermere - Junior Manager 1994 Copthorne - Sales Supervisor 1998 Manchester United FC Conference Sales Manager 2000 Jumeirah Beach Hotel Dubai Director of Sales and Marketing 2002 Radisson SAS - Limerick, Athlone, Manchester Airport 2008 Q Hotels - Crewe Hall 2009 De Vere Hotels Daresbury Park 2012 Director of Sales and Marketing - Mottram Hall 1969

KATE PARK… EVENTS Kate Park is an Event Director. After ten years with Taylor Lynn Corporation, Kate decided the time was right to make her mark in the industry and start her own business. And so began, Kate Park Events. CAREER Trained in drama, dance and song, Kate graduated from Performing Arts College to begin a career with Granada TV before landing a dream job with the Taylor Lynn Corporation where she gained valuable experience and revelled in organising weddings and other events. She says: “Organising and putting on events resemble performance, so I have been fortunate in finding a career that fully utilises my strengths. I’ve always had a creative side and my acting background has helped my self-confidence, but I put my success down to sheer hard work and a determination to succeed.” A Director at the age of just 26, Kate made the 2008 Who’s Who list of young directors: excellent progress! THE JOB Don’t assume party and wedding organisation are all about drinking champers and socialising. They’re about meticulous forward-planning and delivery, from 8am till a function’s underway and finished – often well into the early hours. The event may have entailed a 16-hour working day. CONTACT KATE PARK 0161 905 2052 | 07718456054 kate@kateparkevents.co.uk www.kateparkevents.co.uk 56

Setting up tables, décor, lighting, soundchecking bands and ensuring everyone’s in the right place at the right time boils down to planning, thinking on your feet, and people skills – Kate’s fortes.

KATE’S PROFESSIONAL BELIEFS “Being approachable is vital,” she says. “One must stick to clients’ budgets and reflect their tastes and personalities, which could be quirky, sophisticated or conventional.” Satisfied customers are her reward.

INTERESTS Alongside events, Kate’s passion is for performing arts and the theatre. Tap dancing since the age of three, Kate soon found a love for performing, which remains with her today, often taking part in Am-Dram at the Altrincham Garrick Theatre. She enjoys ballet and modern but tap remains a favourite. Apart from anything else, it helps to keep her fit!

Yes, weddings have always been a passion.

The youngest sister of three, Kate is talented, creative, warm and reliable. She is the wife of Science teacher John and the proud mum of their two young boys, both of whom attend the same Sunday and primary schools she did. Surrounded by a strong family, she has excellent back-up for childcare!

As body-double for Corrie’s Linda Baldwin in 2001, Kate played the character’s exit scenes after the reallife actress left the show. Kate filled in perfectly but was restricted to rear and side shots only – one glimpse of her face and the secret would have been out.

FUNNIES Kate refuses to throw out a beloved circa 1988 Neighbours video featuring Scott and Charlene’s, Madge and Harold’s and Des and Daphne’s weddings, even though there’s no video player in the Park household!

Weddings, celebrity birthday parties and high-profile charity events have all brought glowing testimonials. On the horizon are blue-chip corporate Christmas parties, motivational speaker conferences and fashion shows. She smiles: “I’m loving every minute of it – all the different challenges and working with clients to produce truly memorable occasions for them.”

Food Review

A victorious lunch At victor’s of hAle I’ve never been to the Hamptons on the East coast of the US, but it’s an area that intrigues me. Moneyed Americans visit their weekend residences to dine on fresh lobster and champagne, quite probably with a reality TV show crew tagging along. It sounds like a people-watcher’s paradise. When I was asked to visit a new Hale restaurant inspired by the Hamptons I couldn’t say no.

Victor’s on Ashley Road in Hale sits brightly between all the other restaurants on this lovely stretch of road. I say brightly because it feels brighter somehow. Whitepainted bricks and large windows make it such a warm and sunny place to watch the good and the great of Hale go by. It’s a beautiful venue. A well-stocked champagne bar in the middle was so beautiful it made me wish it wasn’t Monday lunchtime so I could have spent longer there. The menu was intriguing. You can choose food from the grill or perfectly good pasta but at Victor’s there’s a lot of stunning seafood with distinct Japanese influences.

Wanting to try almost everything on the menu I decided to choose a handful of tapas-size tasters for lunch, so I started with lobster tacos. Three little tortillas with a thin slice of apple and avocado mayonnaise all with a hearty piece of lobster in a light crispy batter were just perfect and left me feeling excited I had more dishes to come.

A huge Inari Dragon Roll of the day, asparagus, salmon, cream cheese and spring onion, came to the table. This was a meal in itself and the dragon-style presentation delighted my young lunch guest. Kimchee cabbage in a fried tofu basket changed my mind about tofu in one mouthful – such excellent flavour! I wish I had ordered a couple more. A raw veg salad looked too beautiful to eat and chicken lollipops, although not on a stick, were crispy and succulent. The baked aubergines were a little too sweet for my taste, but my vegetarian lunch guest loved them. Then came the salt and pepper tofu. After the previous dish I had high hopes, but sadly I’m back to thinking tofu is like eating sponge. A chocolate fondue for dessert was served with strawberries, home-made marshmallows, mini-éclairs, cinnamon churros and honeycomb, all waiting to be dipped in hot, delicious chocolate. Wow.

This place is a great addition to Hale. It feels so original and the food is fresh and beautifully presented. I wouldn’t hesitate in going back, not least because there are about 32 other items on the menu I’m desperate to try. By Helen Lawson

Next was salmon Chirashizushi, scattered sushi over sticky rice. The salmon was soft and delicious, as was the ginger. The wasabi had clearly been chilled and crumbled, as I tried unsuccessfully to smear some on my salmon; this was a shame but a very small detail when everything else was so wonderful. 59

Sesquis.com connects talented university students needing extra income with local communities wanting help with a range of services from educational support and music tuition right through to social media campaigns, website design and even dog-walking. CEO and founder of Sesquis, is the London-based former human rights lawyer, Satya Crystal. She exudes a real passion for the company and its key aims in connecting people with their communities. Born and raised in post-independence Trinidad, Satya describes being encouraged by her parents to have ambition and strive for what she wanted during a period of increasing opportunities. It is not surprising then that she approaches Sesquis with enthusiasm, commitment and a particular determination that it becomes a major peer-to-peer solutions website. Sesquis – the Latin word for one and a half - has already enjoyed significant success across the UK. It is clearly Satya’s keen entrepreneurial skill that has turned a simple concept into a burgeoning new business. And, like most successful innovative ideas, Sesquis was born out of Satya’s own needs and experience as a parent when faced with problems her own child was having at school.“My youngest son was struggling at school and his academic performance was dropping,” says Satya.

Key to our success is making our website work for the local community as well as students.

60

She set about seeking help from less traditional avenues. She was not keen on employing a formal tutor but instead wanted someone who could be more of a mentor, someone that her son could be inspired by and importantly, be able to communicate with effectively. “I realised there was a pool of talent in the University that was just across the road so decided to put up simple typewritten signs asking for help.” Says Satya. ‘I had a few approaches and eventually settled on a student who had two younger brothers and had spent six months teaching abroad on her gap year. She and my son got on like a house on fire and before long we saw his confidence return and soon he was performing at a much higher level albeit in a different school. I am positive that this was because he had help from someone who was informally teaching him but also that person was engaging with him as a young person too.” Before long, Satya’s friends were asking for recommendations for their own children but it was when one particular friend suggested that she develop the concept into a proper business that Satya realised the solution she had found for her son’s specific needs could actually benefit the broader local community. Today, Sesquis students who sign up to the website can offer their services in a whole range of activities. They have provided advice on website development, helped local small businesses meet temporary high demand, implemented social media campaigns and offered one-to-one music tutoring as well as help with GCSEs, AS and A Level courses. Satya continues: “Sesquis is a web-based community. We register both students and members from the local community on our website and they can communicate specific requests and make bookings using the on-line booking system. We manage the payments to and from individuals and students, which are agreed between them in advance.”

It is a system that has worked. Sesquis is growing every day. Satya says, “Key to our success is making our website work for the local community as well as students. The technology behind the site is highly sophisticated and specifically designed to ensure that it is fast, simple and effective to use. We want to make sure visitors have a clear understanding of what we offer while at the same time making it easy to navigate so bookings can be made in just a few simple steps.” For students Sesquis can offer a great deal, not just extra income while studying. Satya launched the website believing that doing so would provide an opportunity for the student community itself to make a dent in the number of unemployed university leavers. If they could somehow prove they had worked during their degree and demonstrated competence, reliability and punctuality, they could differentiate themselves from other graduates with similar qualifications and potentially negotiate that crucial first rung of the ladder. Students also set their own rates for jobs so they learn how to value their time. Sesquis is already making an impact in the wider community. Satya says: “For the past two years we have worked in partnership with Westminster Council on their ‘Silver Saturday’ campaign where Sesquis students work with older members of the community to teach them computer skills in a single day. Last year, a Manchester student of the RNCM played the trumpet to entertain a group of senior citizens during Silver Sunday activities in Stockport. We hope to continue and expand our community outreach projects, especially in the area of education, as we continue to grow. “Local communities are really seeing the benefit of using Sesquis. EDUCATION NEWS A LEVEL RESULTS NINE LOCAL BOYS FROM MGS SECURE EXCEPTIONAL A-LEvEL GRADES Manchester Grammar School is celebrating after an impressive 81 gained 3 A grades or better in the A level examinations, nine of whom are from the Didsbury area. Thirty-nine of the School’s top performers achieved two or more A*s, while 18 students achieved three or more A*s. One in four of all grades received was an A* and 23 of the students received offers from Oxford or Cambridge. High-performing Didsbury residents include Akash Bhattacharya, Raymond

Ding, Ryan Emerson, Enda Zhang, Max Croci, Adam Lyons, Richard Wu, Sinan Kelenchy and Asad Malik. Eighteen-year-old Raymond, who studied Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, and Additional Further Maths, has gained a place to read Mathematics at prestigious Imperial College, London. Fellow student Adam, who studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics, has gained his university place at Cambridge, where he will read Medicine.

100% PASS RATE FOR STOCKPORT GRAMMAR

The girls and boys at Stockport Grammar School have had much to celebrate with a 100% pass rate and over 96% of results awarded at A* to C, with over 82% at A* to B. Thirty pupils have achieved at least three A grades, and eight pupils have at least four A’s.

These excellent results will see them heading for courses at the country’s most prestigious institutions. Meredith Ellis is delighted with her three A*s in Further Maths, Maths and Physics, and her A in German. Meredith is now all set to study Maths at Oriel College, Oxford. A talented French horn player, Meredith was grateful for a tour of

Germany with the Hallé Youth Orchestra this summer, which distracted her from worrying too much while she waited for her results. Orchestras, climbing and working towards her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award have kept Meredith, who also finds time to coach karate for younger children, busy alongside her school work.

A LEVEL SUCCESS FOR ALDERLEY EDGE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Alderley Edge School for Girls is celebrating another year of impressive A level results with the students achieving a stunning array of grades across a range of subjects. A* and A grades were up significantly with well over a quarter of results at these grades. As usual, the girls are going on to leading universities to study a huge variety of courses, including Physics, Pharmacy, Engineering, Modern Foreign Languages, Fashion, Marketing, Psychology and Nursing. Kumiko Kawato achieved two A* and two A grades and will read Physics at Imperial College, London. This is a particularly impressive achievement as she only arrived in the UK from Japan in Year 10 with a limited knowledge of the English language. At AS level, seven Year 11 pupils took English Language a year early and gained five A and two B grades. This is an excellent achievement as they were studying for these examinations on top of their GCSE qualifications. 63

STUNNING A LEVEL RESULTS CELEBRATED AT MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Manchester High School for Girls is again celebrating outstanding A level results as students achieve the coveted A* for over one third of all grades. The Class of 2014 notched up yet another year with a 100% pass rate, with an impressive 94.2% of all grades in the A* to B range.

These superb results follow Manchester High’s International Baccalaureate Diploma results as the third cohort of students celebrated their world-class achievements in July. Their average points score was 36.2, which is significantly above the global average of 29-30 points. One student reached a

phenomenal point score of 44, placing her in the top 0.6% of IB students worldwide, according to last year’s global figures. The vast majority of the School’s A level and IB students will proceed to their first-choice university, with six girls successfully securing an Oxbridge place.

ASPIRING ARCHITECT ACHIEVES A LEVEL SUCCESS Altrincham resident and Abbey College Manchester student Ioana Bucurolu, 19, is celebrating exceptional A level results after achieving AAB in Maths, French and Art. As a student at the leading city-centre-based independent Abbey College Manchester, Ioana is now looking forward to studying Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. The college has recorded an excellent 62% of all results at grades A*, A, or B, with 37% A* and A grades, and an overall pass rate at an impressive 99%. Abbey College is a leading independent college in the heart of Manchester with around 210 students, mostly undertaking A level programmes with the remainder studying BTEC courses or GCSEs.

WITHINGTON GIRLS’ SCHOOL AMONG TOP IN UK Headmistress Mrs Sue Marks keeps her feet firmly on the ground despite stellar A level results

In league tables published by The Times, Withington appears within the national top ten for GCSEs, with 92% of entries from the cohort of 77 year 11 girls attaining A* and A grades, 67% of these being at the elite A* grade. At A level, 96% of entries achieved A* to B and 76.5% scored A* and A grades. Success in the Sciences and Mathematics-based STEM subjects was strong with 83% of these entries securing A* and As. This year, Withington has announced plans to build a new junior school and central social hub at the heart of the school buildings. The project will see

Outstanding results in this year’s A level and GCSE examinations has seen Withington Girls' School ranked among the top schools in the country, reinforcing the latest ISI Inspection Report judgement that pupils’ achievements are exceptional.

Withington's juniors relocate to a new two-storey suite of state-of-the-art classrooms in time for the start of the academic year in September 2015. The hub will be a new roofed courtyard area, which will link the junior and senior departments. The new project will improve overall accommodation, enhancing facilities and enabling WGS to offer additional places in years 5 and 6, prior to selective entry to the senior school. Withington, a selective independent school for girls aged 7 to 18, was recently named top secondary school in the north west by the Sunday Times.

Two sets of Trafford twins from Withington Girls’ School are celebrating after notching up an impressive raft of GCSE grades between them. Altrincham duo Flora clinched 11A*s and 1A and Iona attained 10 A*s and 1A, whilst Hale sisters Talia and Jessica Pollick also secured a strong set of results. Talia achieved 10 A* and A grades, with Jessica achieving 9A* to B grades. All four girls also achieved Distinctions in the Level 2 National Award in ICT.

RESULTS SUCCESS CONTINUES FOR ALDERLEY GIRLS Pupils at Alderley Edge School for Girls have, yet again, achieved excellent results in their GCSE and IGCSE examinations. The girls’ impressive grades reflect their hard work and commitment, as well as the dedication of their teachers. Twelve girls achieved straight A* and A grades, including two girls with straight A* grades: Tanya Wilson (13 A* grades) and Iona Morphet (12 A* grades). Both of these girls also obtained A grades in their AS level English Language, which they took a year early.

Other high achievers include Evie Hughes (nine A* and two A grades), Alex Glover (eight A* and three A grades) and Fiona Smith (8A* and 3A grades). With 50 A* grades between them, all five of these girls are looking forward to commencing their A level studies at the school. Across all subjects, almost half of the grades awarded were at A*/A with three quarters at A* to B. The girls achieved particularly strong results in ICT (85% A*/A), Biology and Chemistry (both 75% A*/A). Other subjects in which the girls excelled include Latin (75% A*), Geography (73% A*/A) and Religious Studies (72% A*/A).

HATS OFF TO CHEADLE HULME SCHOOL achieving A and A* in these subjects. The Music and Religious Studies departments also had cause for celebration with more than 90% of entrants achieving A or A*. The School’s sporting talents were also out in force, with England hockey player Helena Evans, international windsurfer Sarah Jackson, rugby captain Jack Clare, ISFA goalkeeper Kieran Sivewright, and international sailor James Clemetson collecting an impressive array of As and A*s between them.

Cheadle Hulme School’s Helen Dwyer was delighted with her nine A* grades, including the coveted A^ grade in Further Maths and the highest mark in the country for her GCSE Food and Nutrition exam

With a 100% pass rate and more than 90% of exams graded A* to B, students have improved on last year’s results at Cheadle Hulme School, despite national predictions that the number of top grades would drop due to exam reform and a return to end-of-year exams. Talented students Anna Chippendale and Hal Dewhurst led the celebrations, both achieving ten A*s in demanding academic subjects. Anna, who is also known for her excellent singing voice, studied German in her own time, on top of an already packed GCSE schedule, with help from the CHS German assistant. Hal, who is also an accomplished musician, achieved the coveted A^ in Further Maths as well as A*s in Greek and Latin. Fellow student Miriam Abbas also achieved A* in both Greek

Single Sex or Co-Education?

Wilmslow Prep offers the best of both We’ve always believed that children learn best in a nurturing environment. But we also know that boys and girls learn at different rates and in different ways.

However, when the children move into Key Stage 2 (Form 3), the boys and girls are taught separately for the key core subjects, including Maths and English.

For this reason, in our Early Years, where the emphasis is on the children acquiring foundation learning tools and social skills, the pupils are taught in mixed classes.

This enables teaching to focus on the individual learning needs of the boys and girls separately.

ever fAllen in love...

If you like your swing vocals watered down then Buble is fine, but for a much more satisfying awakening of your musical taste buds go back to the master of the whole genre – the great Frank Sinatra. And why was he the master? A number of reasons, not least of which is that he invented an entire style of singing that spawned many imitators well before young Michael. So where do you start on an output that numbers at least 300 albums? You could do a lot worse than this classic from 1956, which was the firstever million-selling LP (remember them?). This is Sinatra back at the top of his game technically and artistically after a period filled with personal and professional problems that threatened to wreck his career. Here he struts with sunny confidence, backed by Nelson Riddle arrangements, which are witty and highly original. It is almost worth the price of the album just to enjoy the exchanges between the band and the graceful muted trumpet of Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, or the astonishing roaring trombone solo from Milt Bernhart on what may be the standout track: Cole Porter’s ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’.

However, the real star is Sinatra himself. Directly following his previous album ‘In The Wee Small Hours’ with its pervading mood of abandonment and despair, the tracks on ‘Swinging Lovers’ suggest an entirely different take on modern love as being easy, jaunty and fun. All too often we hear or read tales of Sinatra the monstrous egotist and hell-raiser, but the fact remains that once in the studio he respected and foregrounded the songs themselves and invested them with a dynamism and coherence unmatched elsewhere in popular vocal music. From the joyous opening bars of ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’ to the sophisticated list song ‘How About You’, Sinatra delivers a master class in how to interpret a selection of carefully chosen gems from the Great American Songbook.

So will one great Sinatra album do it? Of course it won’t, but if this whets your appetite, dig further into the enormous goldmine that is his recording legacy. Let yourself be seduced by the haunting sadness of ‘Where Are You’ or ‘Only The Lonely’, then marvel at the ease and professionalism of ‘Frank Sinatra At the Sands’, surely one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Vocally, the man could do anything and evoke any kind of mood. Many a drunk thinks he sings like Sinatra, but doesn’t, and nor does the undoubtedly talented Mr Buble. Sinatra always practised the art that concealed art. Forget ‘My Way’; start here and begin to savour that art. Les Berry lives in Frank’s world – and Didsbury, sometimes!

Reviews IIIII

By John Waddington

MUSIC Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways Sonic Highways shares its title with the Dave Grohl-directed eight-episode HBO series. For the album and series, Grohl and his fellow Foos wrote and recorded eight songs, each in a different city. All songs feature local musicians sitting in, with every lyric written at the last minute at each session. And what’s more, it actually works.

Jackson Browne – Standing In The Breach

Johnny Marr – Playland

Standing In the Breach is Browne’s 14th album, and his first of new material since 2008’s Time The Conqueror. Standing. Self-released on the California singer-songwriter’s Inside Recordings label, this new work displays the talents of a host of top musicians specially selected by the man himself.

FILMS The Interview – Director: Evan Goldberg

The ever-dependable Seth Rogan and James Franco star In this actioncomedy in which an American tabloid TV star is enlisted by the CIA to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, when all he wanted to do was conduct a serious interview. Genius.

The Drop – Director: Michael R Roskam In this gritty thriller, Bob Saginowski finds himself at the centre of a robbery gone bad and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into his neighbourhood's past, where friends, families and foes all work together to make a living - no matter what the cost. Interstellar – Director: Christopher Nolan

More meaty guitar riffs, courtesy of Mancunian six-string legend Johnny Marr. If you liked his first solo effort The Messenger, odds are you are going to dig this too. Of course it’s not in the same league as his Smiths-era work, but what is?

BOOKS

Clare Nasir – Colin the Cloud Aimed at 4 to 7-year-olds, Colin the Cloud is TV weather-presenter Nasir’s charming rhyming tale of a little cloud with a big ambition. Colin yearns to see the world and turns to wise old cloud Arif for guidance. Packed full of fun and adventure the book explains basic learning points about weather and simple atmospheric physics. Fun and educational! Michel Faber – The Book of Strange New Things From the author of Under the Skin, the first novel from Michel Faber in 14 years is a wildly original tale of adventure, faith and the ties that might hold two people together when they are worlds apart. It’s a compelling book about love in the face of death, and the search for meaning in an unfathomable universe. Jérôme Ferrari – Sermon on the Fall of Rome By turns wise, comic, dramatic, tragic and absurd, this is a long-awaited English translation of celebrated French novelist Ferrari's Goncourt-winning masterpiece, which covers a century of personal history with a dazzling, skewering precision.

Explorers journey though a wormhole in space to conquer the vast distances involved in interstellar travel in this mindbending adventure, based on the theories of physicist Kip Thorne.

Gadgets

Always on the cutting edge, we once again take your hand and guide you across the deep ravine of gadget land.

s Bluefingers Smart Beanie

Right on trend, and available in a choice of colours, this soft cable knit beanie offers comfort with a high-tech twist. Built-in high performance dual stereo speakers and a covert mic offer a stylish, hands-free personal communication device without the frustration of wires. The Bluefingers BlueWave HD audio enhances bass and provides a superior listening experience. £39.99, www.bluefingers.co.uk

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 covers many bases in its quest for acceptance. It's a tablet, a laptop, and even a graphics tablet. In the highest spec version you will get a decent player in all these fields, but not a bar setter. It does a good job at replacing a laptop, and the nice 12-inch screen is great for movies, but the price does make it rather uncompetitive.

t Astell & Kern AK120 II This one is for the audiophiles only. It’s a seriously good-looking piece of kit with a serious price tag. If you care about your audio quality, you know that compressed MP3s really don’t cut the mustard, and you want to be listening to uncompressed files such as FLAC. An iPod is not suitable in this respect, but the AK120 II is. Superior quality AD converters and components mean that audio quality is second to none, and build quality is frankly jawdropping.

£1,499, Astell & Kern

s Optoma HD50 projector

This HD projector punches well above its weight in terms of bang for your buck. Images are ultra sharp (1080p, 50,000:1 contrast) and the design is rather funky, in a curvy gloss white shell. Setup is super-easy, but for those enthusiasts who want to dig deeper, there are a host of calibration options. If you’re serious about your movies and want to take home-viewing to the next level, look no further. £999, amazon.co.uk

t Dali Kubik Free

Although there are a plethora of Bluetooth and wireless speakers on the market now, generally they are stand-alone units shaped like lozenges that give an unconvincing stereo image. Dali, which has been making speakers since 1982, is addressing this with the superiorsounding Kubik Free. This speaker (or speakers, when you purchase the add-on twin) actually looks like a speaker, and is designed to be paired for stereo like a proper hi-fi (remember those?). £899 (for both units), amazon.co.uk

s Airwheel Q3 A crazy invention for those who simply hate to walk, the Airwheel is much like a Segway, except there is no handle, making it much less secure and very prone to crashing and careering wildly out of control. With a central wheel, and pedals on each side, you must stand on the contraption, and lean forward to go, lean back to stop, and lean side to side to turn. You must keep moving or you will fall off. Hopefully, this will be outlawed soon.

S FOR SPECIAL Mercedes-Benz’ flagship S-Class model has always been known to car people as a pioneer in automotive technology. Whatever clever refinements our cars have today, from safety features to performance enhancements, chances are there was an S-Class Mercedes that had them a decade ago. Little wonder that this super-saloon is the car of choice for the wealthy and powerful, from sports stars to plutocrats. So when special versions come out, they’re always worth a look, because you can guarantee that ‘special’ will be an understatement. In this issue we’ve looked at two distinctive variations of the S-Class. First, the new coupé model, which starts from just under a hundred grand and climbs to almost two hundred for the V12-propelled S65 AMG. It has every luxury, performance and safety feature you can think of – except one: it can’t withstand military-grade weapons. But luckily there’s an S-Class that can. The new S600 Guard is the next level of armoured car, which looks almost exactly like the standard model but meets the highest ballistics protection standards. Granted, we don’t tend to settle our differences with machine guns on Wilmslow Road, but some VIPs have more dangerous jobs than others!

LAGONDA IS BACK If you’re looking for an enormous passenger car to make a statement, and the S-Class Mercedes is just too proletarian for your tastes, then there’s some good news. The Aston Martin Lagonda is coming back. As a child in 1980s Cheshire, I had a friend whose dad had a Lagonda. It was one of the most expensive cars in the world at the time, and with its aggressively angular styling and futuristic digital displays it was like nothing else I’d ever seen. Critics at the time slated it because its shape was so extreme, and its technology was so far ahead of its time that it was plagued with reliability bugs. But how I desired that car – and still do. 80

By oliver chesher

We don’t know much about the new hand-built model that is set to bring back the Lagonda name, but that’s part of why I want it so much – and that’s entirely the point of it. Everything from specifications to pricing can only be discussed by invitation, and it won’t even be available outside the Middle East. It’s guaranteed to hit the headlines and cement Aston Martin’s reputation as one of the world’s most exclusive and desirable brands. Very few people in the world will ever get to see this car, let alone drive it. It’s unlikely that one will ever pop up on eBay or Auto Trader. But if reading about it has made you even 1% more likely to buy one of Aston Martin’s more ‘everyday’ cars, it’s done its job.
