Editor’s letter We’re so pleased to be back and bringing you a brand-new issue packed full of features, news, reviews and competitions.

Over the past 18 months, many of us have spent most of our time at home, travelled less widely, seen a lot less of our friends and spent lots of money improving our homes and on internet shopping. It’s not surprising that we are craving new things.

Lockdown wasn’t all bad; it gave us time to take stock of what is or isn’t important – like being able to spend additional time with our families.

I had a lot to think about over lockdown and had some very important decisions to make. You can read my pandemic story on page 9.

An uncertain future On 14th January 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and, in October 2008, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wrote this article for Issue 58 of Didsbury Magazine

Then, almost 12 years later, in November 2019, I found out that I carry the BRCA2 gene. And if you can remember (I’m sure you can), the pandemic hit and everything shut down. So, an uncertain future was me in 2008.

Fast forward to 2021 and it’s all about what I went through during the pandemic and where I’m up to now.

“Okay, are you listening?” was his opening. “You have a malignant tumour that has to be removed and we will also need to take some lymph nodes from under your arm.” He went on to say that breast cancer is graded from 1-3, grade 3 being the worst – and I was grade 3. He said they would admit me the day before surgery and inject dye into my breast so that it would show up when they opened me up. They would take out the number of lymph nodes they needed to, send them to pathology and while they were waiting for the results, they would remove the breast lump. He told me that I was lucky having the procedure done in this way and I remember saying that I really didn’t feel very lucky.

He opened his diary and asked me when I was free or if I had anything planned.

“Not anymore,” I remember saying.

Funny how you remember everything so vividly – every single word.

I went into hospital on 29th January, and I was scared. My body was shaking and I couldn’t control it. The dye injection was simple, quick and didn’t hurt.

Afterwards, I was free to leave the hospital, but I needed to return a few hours later for a scan to make sure it had worked. We decided to go to Pizza Express for some strange reason. Why, I don’t know, because neither Salim nor I could possibly eat anything. >> October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Once on the ward, a student nurse put me at ease by sitting and talking to me.

I told her I was scared and asked if I could have sleeping tablets in the evening and a pre-med before my operation, so she made sure this was on my notes.

I had a great night’s sleep and woke at 6.30am, just in time for a cup of tea.

Surgery was scheduled for 10.30am, so I had my pre-med at 9am, just before Salim arrived. My surgeon visited me once I was on the trolley and explained that if I wake with drains in my arms, it would mean they had done a full clearance of the lymph nodes. But before I knew it, I was being told by a breast nurse that they only took three and they were all clear. Woo-hoo! That was the first good news I’d heard for a while.

Now, I could go back to sleep.

Our children How do you tell your children that you have breast cancer? I told Andrew and Antony, my 21 and 18-year-old sons.

That was hard, because they were still my babies, however old they were. They’d see me when I came back from my treatment, pale, tired, sickly, and I don’t know how they dealt with it; maybe I should have asked them.

As for our younger children, Safi, Zara and Loulou (aged nine, seven and five respectively), we didn’t tell them. We decided we would stick to drip-feeding on a need-to-know basis. At breakfast, the day before my op, Salim told the children that mummy had to go into hospital to have a lump removed and that I could be there for two to five days, so he needed them to help him while I was away. They asked a couple of questions like “Will you come back?” and “Will you die?”. We tried to be very casual about the whole thing, although we were crying inside, but they just carried on playing. That was a weight off our minds.

I came out after two nights and at first, they were a bit clingy, but all in all, nothing changed and we carried on as normal. The next chat with them was before I started my chemotherapy. Again, at breakfast, Salim told them that I had to go back to hospital for some injections and that it could make me tired and sickly. Once they knew I wasn’t staying in, they were happy and carried on.

I wrote in my 2008 article that I hoped I could “get through the following few years without any further problems.” And I did, as far as breast cancer was concerned Then in 2018, we carried an advert for the BRCA2 gene, which made me think about my family history. I have two cousins on my mum’s side that were diagnosed with breast cancer after me and we were all a similar age. So, I contacted Everything Genetic and said I’d like to do the test. The BRCA testing service includes mandatory pre-test counselling and post-test counselling by one of their UK consultant genetic specialists. I had my pre-test counselling and the test was sent out to me. On 28th November 2019, I received a call to say my test was positive. I immediately thought I was going to die, but by the evening, I’d managed to calm down and remember that I hadn’t just been diagnosed with cancer, I had been informed that there’s a risk I could get breast cancer again, or melanoma, pancreatic and ovarian cancer.

A few days later, I had my post-test genetics counselling and decided to go ahead with preventative surgery – a double mastectomy and reconstruction as well as ovary and fallopian tube removal. A file was set up

Jill Creative Director How long have you been hairdressing?

I have been hairdressing for 15 years – since I left school.

What attracted you to FIXX Salons?

I moved to the area two years ago from Manchester, I had been looking for a salon somewhere closer to home but just hadn't found 'the one'.

During lockdown, I had peeped through the window at FIXX and fell in love with the quirky neon lights and the light, airy space, so i decided to have a look on its website. I read through the team’s bios and discovered that a lot of the staff had been trained at salons like Sassoon and HOB, so I knew they had been through a similar training process as I had at Trevor Sorbie. It had to be equally as professional as what I was used to and I was excited to work alongside people who would inspire me.

What is your greatest career achievement so far?

Completing my Trevor Sorbie vardering course – it was tough, but it was somewhere I had always wanted to work.

What is your forte?

My favourite is perfectly blended balayage techniques and highlights. I’m very patient and I admire great attention to detail.

What hair trends are coming for this winter?

Feathered bangs and natural, warm, earthy tones – it’s the perfect time to try a fringe as the cooler weather stops your hair from frizzing!

What is your best hair tip?

For long locks, before you go to bed, twist your hair into a low bun, leaving the ends out and tie with a scrunchie. I do this every night and it stops my hair from becoming tangled and it gives me a natural wave without using heat! Magic.

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

The boutique, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is situated on bustling Oxford Road, with Manchester’s huge array of shops within easy walking distance.

The Manchester Arena is a 20-minute walk, while Old Trafford Stadium is a 10 minutes’ drive. Manchester Airport can be reached in 20 minutes’ drive.

The hotel era In 1988, The Refuge Assurance Company re-located to Wilmslow, and in 1989 the building started to operate as The Charterhouse Hotel. The era of this great building operating as a hotel had now begun. In 1996, the hotel was renamed The Palace Hotel. The operators realised the potential of the building next door and bought it. They now had space for extra bedrooms, and a modern business centre provided modern technology that would attract business clientele to the hotel.

During the restoration of the courtyard, a magnificent marble floor was placed in the centre, underneath the glass dome.

This would become the centrepiece of the reception area, complimented by an extravagant chandelier that hung from the centre of the glass dome. Following a multi-million-pound renovation in 2016, the hotel was renamed The Principal Manchester. The Grand Room became The Ballroom. Previously 30

The leafy heart of Kimpton Clocktower Hotel’s distinctive dining space is The Winter Garden. Settle yourself into a comfy chair and browse the selection of gins. Afternoon Tea is served Tuesday to Thursday with a spin on the classic format, which includes a punchy pork and kimchi sausage roll, followed by date and cherry scones and a host of sweet treats.

Furnished with elegant decor, all of the luxury rooms include TVs with satellite channels, private bathrooms and in-room safes. Guests can also make use of hairdryers and tea/coffee-making facilities. No two of the recently refurbished rooms and suites are quite the same and some have original features such as panelled walls or glazed tiled pillars. All 270 rooms are spacious with a neutral colour scheme of cool greys, creams and white, with pops of colour.

Fast free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel and the ballroom is the biggest hotel event space in the north of England.

All in all, a very pleasant stay and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. A definite recommendation, and with rooms starting at only £120, what’s not to like.

Changing rooms with Cheshire Property Staging We catch up with Susie Batista of Cheshire Property Staging to discuss her smart new move into the property development market; helping turn new-build residences into the most Instagramable (and salable) in the region We first met Susie back in 2019. Her business (then called Cheshire Home Staging), though still in its infancy, was booming.

Working more or less solo and fizzing with positivity, she busily transformed private properties into must-buy homes by weaving a special kind of house-dressing magic. Houses that had lingered on the market for far too long sold overnight.

Clients called her work “life-changing.”

Meet the team Today, we meet Susie inside her bright and light new office. There’s been a shift in direction since we last spoke. It’s brand-new residential developments, such as luxury apartments, in Cheshire and the North West upon which Susie will now be wielding her Midas touch.

And this time, she’s not alone. Instead, she’s got two amazing women working by her side; both share her burning passion for interiors and ability to storm through to-do lists. There’s Katie,

A new shade of business Early lockdown put many projects on hold, but once the Government gave estate agents the green light to open again, Susie was back in business – and people who’d spent 24/7 within the same

It’s this aspect of the business and a shift into new properties that the team is now focusing on: “We loved (and still love staging) homes,” says Susie, “but the main focus now is putting our stamp on the property development arena and working on high-end show homes.

“There are some incredible developments happening locally and Cheshire Property Staging wants to work alongside developers from day one.”

Whilst staging is an increasingly popular aspect of development projects, Susie explains that many developers are not yet convinced of its power: "It’s a key way of standing out from the competition; the ability to capture highly instagramable images of the properties for sale, beautifully staged, is a sure-fire way to maximise investment.”

Supporting developers “By being part of the development team from the beginning,” says Susie, “we can not only advise on all aspects of interior design, we will give direction on fixtures and fittings too. We can help with everything from where the light switches should be located to wall and carpet colour. Attention to detail is so important and that’s what we offer.”

Part of that detail is creating looks that ‘talk’ directly to the target buyer; no one-look-attracts-all designs here: “We know exactly what’s on-trend when it comes to colours and materials and, more importantly, what will attract a specific buyer. As soon as we see a property, we envisage the ideal occupant and decorate and stage accordingly.

Montrose Properties – 40 years’ of letting excellence We catch up with Jen Wildblood and Ruth Pointon from Montrose Properties in the heart of West Didsbury to discuss the business’s early beginnings and changing perceptions of letting and landlords Montrose Properties first opened its doors in 1981 on the corner of Clyde Road and Lapwing Lane. The name came from the location of the business’s first property, a bedsit, on nearby Montrose Avenue. Jen joined the company in 1988 and Rob, her now husband, in 1990. A few years later, the business went up for sale and Jen and Rob bought it. Fast forward to 2021 and not only is the business thriving, it navigated the pandemic with a swift in-house digital response that left chains and nationals standing.

But then again, Montrose isn’t your typical letting agency. It may be small, but it is powerful. The team acts like a family, but it means business. A nononsense but friendly approach devoted to lettings and property management, with no sales, gives them the expertise and ability to change quickly to market dynamics.

landscape. “I grew up here,” says Jen, “but it wasn’t a very desirable location – full of big, dilapidated Victorian houses, which nobody could afford to maintain anymore.”

Changing perceptions The perceived ‘landlord versus tenant’ battle is near mythical. It’s important that Montrose continues to invest in the area to ensure that local businesses, like us, succeed for another 40 years.”

The Great Kathmandu Food, family and friendship 35 years on, the Dangol family’s Great Kathmandu restaurant still scores gold for Nepalese food, service, intimacy and warmth Yes, West Didsbury’s famed curry house and its ever-expanding menu gain an all-round thumbs up from local gourmets and UK ex-pats alike.

Obviously, the Dangols put food first.

But there’s more to longevity than meets the eye. This family’s unpretentious personal touch, its ability to form lasting friendships with customers of all backgrounds, are rare qualities and major factors in The Great Kathmandu’s success.

The Dangols Established by Gopal and Jhunu Miaya Dangol in October 1986, The Great Kathmandu has, since 2008, been managed by of two of their six children – business info technology graduate and Managing Director Buda, 41, and Manageress Asha. When their dynamic mum, Jhunu (Gopal’s operations person and ‘righthand man’), developed Alzheimer's, Gopal became her carer but kept his eye on the business too. In April 2020, 71-year-old Jhunu died. The Dangols’ standing in the local community was clear – her funeral procession saw crowds waving her on during her final journey.

History In 1973, five-star chef Gopal Dangol was flown to work at a city centre curry house. Jhunu and their two daughters arrived in 1975. Along with four colleagues, in 1979, go-ahead Gopal set up The Kathmandu in Sackville Street and left in 1985 to go it alone.

He ignored warnings against investing in the rundown, drug-drenched West Didsbury of the 1980s, followed his instinct and, alongside his wife, opened their very own compact Asian restaurant on Burton Road.

The first night’s five customers vowed to return and bring pals along too – and they did. From the start, the entire clan pitched in, including today’s MD, Buda, then too small to even reach the bar! The Great Kathmandu’s reputation snowballed. Staff turnover then and now remains negligible – and consistent with the area’s gradual gentrification, pub-closing punch-ups before a late-night curry died down too.

How’s this for loyalty? Every Monday since 1986, a group of curry-loving consultants, originally based in nearby Withington Hospital, meet up for their

weekly Great Kathmandu fare. The bonds are reciprocal. The family displayed a muso friend’s first CD in their waiting area ‘shrine’ for good luck and then, after refurbishment, ensured the disc was not binned but carefully relocated.

Expansion Acquiring the next-door video store in 2009 marked a real turning point. More space, more comfort, larger kitchen – but no loss of quality for perfectionist Gopal, insistent on butchering each lamb himself. Generous with his skills, Gopal, whose past boasts an audience with the King of Nepal, has occasionally divulged trade secrets to customers and trained all his children and chefs, including sonin-law Ramesh Khadka, Head Cook for 27 years.

The Food Buda clarifies some differences between Indian and Nepalese cuisine saying:“It’s about subtlety and depth of flavour, not merely taste. Our garam masala is roasted, ground and blended in-house from fourteen spices. Our curries aren’t sweet. We don’t bombard you with spices either. We offer a balance – a sort of symphony of seasonings.

It’s followed by the onions and tomatoes. Then, like savouring good wine, the garam masala emerges. Cooking must come from the heart. Lockdown & the future Lockdown was tough. Its easing increased the uptake of takeaways and the provision of al fresco dining. Buda says, “We’re open 365 days a year. This leaves no time for making improvements. Lockdown was our opportunity to renovate and update the kitchen and restaurant without losing the original essence of The Great Kathmandu.”

Mind you, Buda’s Namchi chilli chicken – inspired by his 2019 Alzheimer’s fundraising trek to Base Camp Everest and Looking ahead, things are good. Two years ago, their 18-year-old son, Royal Exchange Theatre and TV child actor Joel, had just celebrated gaining an impressive clutch of diverse A-levels. He was all set for uni.

A fortnight later, on August 28th, 2019, the family’s life was to change completely.

Visiting the optician to check out his eye strain and recurrent headaches, the teen was immediately sent for a brain scan. This revealed a golf-ball-sized tumour buried in the right side of Joel’s brain. This had been affecting his optic nerve and eyesight.

On September 5th, at Salford Royal Hospital, an eight-hour operation removed that tumour. It was then frozen. Aggressive, erratic and presently incurable, this brain cancer was a glioblastoma. Patients’ average life expectancy after diagnosis is 18 months.

When Joel asked if he would see the age of thirty, the answer was a simple ‘no.’

Following months of gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy at The Christie in 2019 and 2020, the NHS’ long-term plan offered three-monthly scans. Nothing more for now. Yet a tailor-made dendritic cell vaccine, manufactured in either Cambridge or Germany, could potentially improve and extend his life.

Working with the UK lab would be less disruptive to his studies, so the family investigated further. The treatment could be delivered privately by star neurosurgeon Professor Keyoumars Ashkan at King’s College Hospital in London – and each course of treatment would cost over £200,000.

If these inoculations can extend his life by three years, something else may have been discovered by then. The aim is to delay the tumour’s recurrence. We live in limbo, watching on as Joel hopefully enjoys his life. Meanwhile, we are frozen.

But we remain strong together because we communicate so well. We each do our own thing. Ian walks in the hills.

Levelling up – when will we taste the jam?

There’s been a great of deal of talk about ‘levelling up’ since Boris Johnson’s decisive election victory in December 2019

The PM said recently that the government will have "made progress in levelling up when we have begun to raise living standards, spread opportunity, improved our public services and restored people's sense of pride in their community." But what does levelling up really mean and what is needed to translate words into action so that people in Manchester and the north feels its effects?

Whilst insisting that “levelling up is not a ‘jam-spreading exercise”, the PM sounds a little bit unsure of what it is and has asked local leaders with ideas on how to improve their constituencies to come forward, promising to give them "the tools to make things happen for their communities".

Greater Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham, is clear about what will achieve levelling up and has called for the creation of a “London-style transport network with London-level fares, which will unite towns and cities and transform the life chances of the 2.8 million people who live here.”

All he needs is the powers and resources from central government to achieve it.

Other commentators seem to agree that the key to levelling up is greater powers for local communities and investment in infrastructure.

Stephen Church, North Markets Leader for EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young), agrees that capital projects, including the £640bn investment in infrastructure will lay the foundations of levelling up. However, he feels “to fully succeed, governments must work together with the wider business community to maximise the potential of levelling up’s regional prosperity.”

the capital in the ‘race for space’, recent house prices in the North West have outstripped London’s for the first time in years.

Covid has also shown that technology makes it increasingly irrelevant where you work, making the need to live in the capital less obvious.

“After the global economic crisis of ten years or so ago, London’s house prices rebounded quicker than the rest of the country, including the North West, so there’s a certain amount of catching up to do since prices around the UK are starting from a lower base.”

But is it a blip or a permanent change?

Bill thinks house prices will rise outside the capital for a while though he thinks it’s likely there will be some ‘self-correction’. If house prices in other parts of the country continue to outperform London, he thinks the capital will start to be very attractive again, leading many to once more seek their fortunes there, Dick Whittington style.

Bradley Martin, Senior Associate at DWF Law LLP, feels ‘levelling up’ could be an opportunity for the North to secure the powers and funding to create better jobs with higher salaries and deliver wider benefits to the region.

He also thinks that Rishi Sunak needs to play his part, saying the Chancellor should create a 'UK Shared Prosperity Fund' to make up for the EU funds lost following Brexit and prioritise growth in the North and other areas of the country.

He also backs the idea of giving the Metro Mayors more powers and more funding for public transport – especially transport into the cities and towns, highlighting that roughly twice as much is spent per person on transport in London as in the North of England.

Finally, there needs to be a measure attached to levelling up, so voters can track the success of the policy. The whole picture about quality of life in Manchester compared to London has been more complicated by the impact of Covid. As many people flee

The impact of Covid has made the complicated political, economic, transport and housing issues around levelling up even more intricate. One thing is clear: levelling up will not be achieved overnight and there’s much work to do – and money to be spent – before Mancunians and other Northerners start to taste any ‘jam’ spread their way.

“Over the last year or so, we’ve seen people going to ‘secondary cities’ outside London because they can get a greater ‘bang for their buck’,” he explained. “We’ve also seen blue chip companies increasingly going to cities outside London. Over the next few years, the story of house prices will be more interesting outside London than in the capital.

The organisation Young Minds has carried out valuable surveys of young people throughout the COVID pandemic and the results of the fourth survey, from January 2021, are of no surprise. 67% of those surveyed felt that the pandemic would have a negative, long-term effect on their mental health. This is incredibly worrying and, therefore, for those of us who work in schools, it is the wellbeing of our pupils that must be our key focus over the coming year.

Alderley girls celebrate excellent A-level achievements Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is delighted for its Upper Sixth pupils, who have achieved an excellent set of A-level results. FLYING MACHINES DJI Mini 2 I’M A huge fan of drones, as I’m sure most middle-aged dads are. It’s the archetypal dad toy: something we could never have imagined when we were kids and something even the most ham-fisted among us can operate with satisfying results.

By results, I mean cinematic quality aerial film and photo footage controlled by your phone, which not long ago, you could only get from millions of pounds’ worth of helicopter and camera gear.

I couldn’t believe it when I got my first drone, a DJI Spark, and straight out of the box, I was able to shoot smooth, clear swooping vistas and even track a moving subject while circling them from the air. With minimal practice, I was out shooting beach and forest adventures for my YouTube channel (red_dread, in case you’re interested).

Of course, it wasn’t long before new laws came in to govern drone use, given how dangerous one could be in the wrong hands. And that’s no bad thing – it just means you have to register your drone and apply for an operator

licence. But most of the rules currently only apply to drones that weigh over 250g – so what did the clever manufacturers do? They invented ones that weigh 249g or less!

This one, for example, the DJI Mini 2, is by no means a toy.

Sure, it’s lightweight, but it can still shoot in 4k resolution, transmit footage up to 10km away, fly for more than half an hour on one battery and even remain stable in winds up to 38kph.

The mobile software also allows you to edit and even upload your footage straight to social media on the fly, plus, it has all the same clever tricks as the bigger models, such as auto return to home, in case you lose sight of it in the sky.

Syma RC helicopter No dad can ever get away with having a toy without letting the kids have a go, or at least getting them a version for themselves as a distraction.

If it’s a cheap and cheerful flying gadget they want, this thing is unbelievable. Advertised as having ‘strong crash resistance’, it’s ideal for the most boisterous children to play with and as the videos prove, you really can tread on it, chuck it off the roof, slam it into walls and still, it will fly.

OK, it doesn’t have on-board cameras or some of the cleverest flying modes of a serious drone, but for the price, it’s a great way of getting used to flying your own little machine. And for beginners, you might be surprised to hear it does still have automatic take-off and landing as well as altitude hold. Which, for under £60, makes this an amazing bargain.
