This year's October/November issue is the biggest we have published in 14 years, and the last month has probably been one of the busiest periods ever for parties, launches and lunches. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.

My friends and family are well aware that I don’t like heights. I get dizzy looking down from the first floor of the Trafford Centre. So, when I was asked to take to the skies in a helicopter at City Airport Manchester, you can imagine my response. Anyhow, reluctantly, along we went to the new Helicentre with Jo, our summer work experience saviour, who was only too happy to take our place. However, a glass of Prosecco later, there we were – up, up and away in an incredible flying machine, amazed at the view and all the greenery below. Read more about the Helicentre on page 30 it’s so affordable and would make a great Christmas present.

I've got some wrinkles but I don't want Botox injections – is there anything else I can have?

John Thomson helps make a lotto difference

Cold Feet actor John Thomson recently visited Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital to proudly launch the charity’s new weekly lottery, along with some of the hospital’s patients.

The charity holds a special place in John’s heart, having been a supporter of the hospital for many years. John regularly gets involved with the hospital’s charitable projects and was thrilled to help launch this latest fundraising initiative with some of the young patients.

John commented: “I’ve seen firsthand the incredible work being done right here on our doorstep for poorly babies and children from all over the North West, so I’m absolutely delighted to be able to help launch the charity’s new weekly lottery. The more players we can get to sign up, the more the charity will be able to do for poorly children in hospital – it’s as simple as that. I want to encourage the people of the North West to get involved and do something amazing for a fantastic cause.”

The new lottery is a fun and exciting way to support the amazing work being done in the country’s

biggest children’s hospital. All money raised will help to make a difference for the thousands of children treated at the hospital, by supporting projects which help ensure continued excellence in treatment, research and care. For just £2 per week, players will directly fund Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s life-changing work, whilst giving them the chance to win a weekly cash prize of £1,000 or the annual bumper draw of £10,000.

Joining John for the lottery launch was 13-year-old patient Declan McEntee, who knows better than anyone how incredible the doctors and nurses really are at the hospital.

After being born prematurely with a lung condition and then being diagnosed with meningitis at just three days old, Declan went on to suffer a range of medical conditions that have led him to have more than 14 operations and many more

medical procedures at the hospital, including bowel, heart, lung and ear surgery.

Declan’s mum Leanne commented: “There were times when it felt like the odds were against Declan getting better, but we’re so thankful to the amazing consultants, doctors and nurses who have taken care of him over the years. We honestly will be forever in their debt – which is why we support this incredible charity.”

Didsbury’s budding young artists rewarded by Spire Manchester

Spire Manchester Hospital recently held an art competition with three local schools in Didsbury to create a colouring book for their paediatric patients. Local children were invited to draw pictures of what makes them happy, which would then feature in a book designed for Spire’s young patients.

A judging panel drawn from the medical staff at Spire Manchester selected 12 winning entries from The Birches, Moor Allerton and Lancasterian schools, each of whom won Amazon vouchers. Yusra Choudhry of The Birches was declared the overall winner, securing an additional £100 prize for her school. The winning entries will be designed and compiled into a colouring book, which will then be given to all children visiting Spire Manchester for treatment. The colouring book will be launched later this year.

Anthony Blandford, Business Development Manager at Spire Manchester, said: “We were very impressed with the standard of the entries, which showed great creativity – we wish that we could put them all in the colouring book! We’re looking forward to launching the colouring book to our youngest patients, both at our current site in Whalley Range, and at our new Didsbury hospital, early in 2017.”

Brain tumour dad’s team challenge raises over £75,000

Cheshire husband, dad of five, and brain tumour survivor Rob Ward takes on the London to Paris cycling challenge.

Rob will lead a team of 34, taking on the famous 300-mile cycle from London to Paris to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity. Rob, who lives in Wilmslow, is also joined by his brother, one of his sisters and two of his brothersin-law. Rob’s own fundraising efforts have smashed through his original £10,000 target, as have several of his colleagues.

Rob said: “I have personally been affected by brain tumours. Back in January of 2014, I received the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour. Successful surgery followed, but the impact is far reaching for me and my family, as it is for countless others.

“I now want to raise awareness of a disease that is desperately underfunded 10

and, as a result, early diagnosis is very poor. Brain tumours are a life-limiting condition and there is little known about the causes and treatments of them. They are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40, and also reduce life expectancy by an average of 20 years, the highest of any cancer.”

Geraldine Pipping, The Brain Tumour Charity’s Head of Fundraising, said: “We receive no government funding and rely 100% on voluntary donations and gifts in wills. It is only through the incredible efforts of people like Rob and his London to Paris team, that we can change this shocking situation in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year.”

Make Believe Ball raises £189,500

Local businessman and owner of Betfred, Fred Done and his wife Mo hosted a lavish charity ball at the Hilton Deansgate recently in aid of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

The event raised an incredible £189,500.

The Salford-based couple have chosen to donate the proceeds towards the purchase of a Miltenyi Prodigy® machine for the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. The unit treats children with blood disorders, cancers such as leukaemia, and genetic and metabolic diseases. Having a Prodigy® machine at the hospital would ensure that families do not need to be separated during this already distressing and anxious time.

Central Manchester Hospitals hits £3.9m target for charity Helipad Appeal Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity (CMFT Charity) is delighted to announce that it has reached its £3.9m target to build a dedicated helipad at its central Manchester site.

The ‘Time Saves Lives’ Helipad Appeal was only launched last September and, thanks to the dedication and generosity of supporters, has hit its target a year earlier than anticipated. Located on the roof of the new multi-storey car park on Grafton Street, the helipad will be connected to the hospitals by a high-level link bridge and rooftop corridor. The helipad will serve Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Saint Mary’s Hospital, which are all based on the central Manchester site. The new multi-million-pound helipad will take approximately one year to build; construction work is now scheduled to commence in January 2017, with the facility due to be operational by the beginning of 2018. The charity still needs the support of those who are currently raising funds for the Helipad Appeal, as all pledges have been included in the total amount raised. Foundry Film Studios opens in Manchester

Manchester’s prolific media industry is set for a major boost with the opening of The Foundry Film Studios, a purpose-built, 8,000 square foot venue located adjacent to MediaCityUK, and designed specifically for the creation of TV and advertising content, photography shoots and events.

The £1.5 million facility on Ordsall Lane in Salford is being managed by a young and visionary team, which comprises of Managing Director James Shannon (28) and Producer Madeline Penfold (23), both

Supporters from local businesses, individuals and volunteers from the hospice joined together at the Palace Hotel for the annual St Ann’s Hospice Ladies’ Fashion Lunch event, which was hosted by broadcaster and business woman Chelsea Norris.

The fundraiser, which was sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, included a fashion show featuring Autumn Winter collections from Nadine Merabi and Fizz Fashion, and guest speaker Geraldine Hurd from Betty and Belle. This year’s media supporter for the event was Didsbury Magazine.

The Ladies’ Fashion Lunch has been a key event in the St Ann’s fundraising calendar since 2003 and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity in that time.

Making it count South Manchester-based specialist lender Together recently announced record trading results, but it has also hit a high note when it comes to charity

Together is a business with an impressive 42-year history, providing finance to a wide range of customers; from homebuyers and property investors to businesses and entrepreneurs. In recent years, the business has grown considerably, and last year united the different companies within its group under a single identity – Together.

It recently made headlines with its record lending for 2016, but as the brand becomes more well-known, it has also brought to light the group’s strong commitment to giving back to the community. Whilst its track record in this area goes back a long way, it has now been aligned under a clear approach called Let’s Make it Count. The initiative spans charity, community and the environment, and will see Together and its 460-plus colleagues participating heavily in local causes.

Together’s HR director Kevin Fisher explains: “The business has historically done a lot of work with charity and the community; but given the level of growth we’ve experienced in recent years, it was time to put more emphasis on this, which will allow us to make more of an impact.

Our colleagues are really passionate in their support, which is what makes it all possible, so it’s great to see that strong business performance and hard work can go hand in hand with making a positive contribution to our community.”

This year alone, Together has made a formidable impact with its fundraising.

It has donated £26,000 to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, to support the refurbishment of its Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and has raised over £15,000 for St Ann’s

Hospice, with 26 colleagues having undertaken the National Three Peaks Challenge to achieve this. Together has also supported bereavement charity Once Upon a Smile, as well as Destination Florida and a host of others, thanks to its weekly dress-down days that provide a regular collection.

As well as fundraising, the business has been active in engaging with the wider Manchester community. Earlier this year, Together hosted an art competition for schools, colleges and universities. With prize funds of £7,000, the artwork was showcased in an exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery.

Together also reached out to pensioners by providing a complimentary Christmas lunch for those that may be lonely during the festive season; treating over 120 guests, at the company’s Cheadle offices, with carols from Together’s own award-winning corporate choir. It proved so successful, that the company has decided to make this an annual event.

Kevin adds: “The name Together stemmed from the fact that our business ethos is all about partnership, and that extends not just to delivering our products and services, but within our organisation and across our community. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but we’re really excited about what’s ahead.”

RECORD OF EXCELLENCE Tazeen graduated as a dentist in 1992 from Leeds Dental Hospital and completed her vocational training year in Manchester. Whilst working in general practice for four years, she also acted as a clinical assistant in orthodontics at Bolton Central Hospital and, in 1996, enrolled on an orthodontic programme at Manchester Dental Hospital. Four years later, she gained a Master of Science degree and Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Bilal graduated in dentistry from Sheffield University in 1991.

In 1995, he was appointed as a senior house officer at Manchester Dental Hospital and gained valuable experience in oral surgery, oral medicine, restorative and children’s dentistry. During his time there he gained his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons. After a further six months in general dental practice, he returned to a three-year postgraduate training programme in orthodontics at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff, achieving a Master of Science degree and Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000.

Both Tazeen and Bilal are on the General Dental Council’s specialist register of orthodontics and are members of the British Orthodontic Society, American Association of Orthodontists and the World Federation of Orthodontists. The couple met whilst studying and working at the dental hospital and married in 1998, before opening their practice in Heaton Mersey in August 2000. It was Tazeen who found the location on Didsbury Road, Stockport, and converted the existing old printing and stationery shop into a fully-functioning orthodontic practice.

CHANGING LIVES Bilal says: "Rightly or wrongly, our whole society is driven by aesthetics and people are ever more conscious about the way they look. We create beautiful smiles and that can be life changing, because a beautiful smile impacts on people's relationships and, very often, their prospective careers. Twenty-five years ago, it would have been more acceptable to have crooked teeth, but these days, with such emphasis placed on celebrity and appearance, that's no longer the case.

"No-one has to have crooked teeth; the results we achieve are amazing and that's why we absolutely love our job so much. Where once young people might have been shy of wearing a brace, now it's almost become a right of passage. Some children ask for braces when they don't really need them!"

GROUND-BREAKING TREATMENTS Two of the most ground-breaking treatments deploy Damon and Invisalign braces. The former uses a passive self-litigating system that eliminates the need for elastic or metal ties around each bracket. Instead, the braces use a slide mechanism to hold the wire and let the teeth move more freely and quickly, cutting down on the friction and pressure associated with keeping the arch wires in place. Their design minimises the need for extractions and focuses on giving patients a beautiful, natural smile with all their teeth in the right place.

Invisalign clear braces, changed every two weeks as the treatment progresses, have become hugely popular for achieving fantastic results without people noticing that patients are wearing one. Bilal explains: "The technology behind this system is mindblowing, and the research and development that's gone into it is incredible. It involves really complex engineering, a lot down to computer programming, which means we get really predictable results."

Seema is joined by her husband and business partner Sandeep, along with their two sons Neil and Aaron. The Malhotras are warm, welcoming and very charming. It’s the first thing that strikes you about this very closeknit family.

Seema reveals how she was introduced to Sandeep by her parents at a family wedding.

“I asked ‘Which one is he?’ as I was looking across the room. They were all called Sandeep!” she chuckles.

Twenty-three years and two charismatic and charming sons later, this arranged marriage is stronger than ever.

“We’re British-born Asians and our parents were fairly westernised,” explains Seema. “We dated for a year, but with chaperones. It wasn’t really necessary. From the first time we met, I knew I was going to marry Sandeep and have his children.”

Perfect host Sandeep pours the coffee, and recalls the first time he met his fatherin-law: “I class myself as very British. I love the UK; I was born here. When I first met Seema’s father, I was pretty intimidated, I only spoke when spoken to – just like my kids do with me!” At this point, Neil and Aaron burst into laughter at their father’s tongue-in-cheek comment about their relationship.

Whilst Sandeep was studying at university, his father began buying and selling overmakes and store seconds, to help fund his son’s education. What began as door-to-door sales through the streets of

Wolverhampton, soon became a burgeoning business. Under the supervision of Sandeep, and with Seema’s creativity and flair for design, that business is now known as Forever Unique.

“I thought the fashion industry would be a lot more glamorous,” says Seema. “In the early days, we had a clapped-out van and would drive from Liverpool to London, peddling our wares. We were hungry and prepared to work hard.”

So, how did the couple manage to establish a foothold in the highly competitive world of fashion? Sandeep explains: “We focused on a collection of 30 items. Seema created the sketches, we had them produced, and we never looked back. This isn’t a lady who lunches; Seema is a workaholic, but loves every minute.” Seema agrees: “even on holiday, I sit by the pool working. I just can’t switch off at times.”

As they grow older, Neil and Aaron are becoming more and more involved in the family business. Studying fashion in Milan has enabled eldest Neil to bring his passion and panache to the design meetings, as Forever Unique looks to the next phase of growth. And Seema is incredibly supportive, encouraging them to experiment while they are young.

THE FUTURE With social media setting new trends, the business is witnessing a huge sway towards online ordering. Customers over-order and return goods that have to be repackaged, re-merchandised and restocked, and it costs the industry thousands of pounds.

“We’re noticing a shift,” says Seema, “and we have got to be geared for that change as a business. It reflects a huge area of growth for Forever Unique.”

However, this doesn’t mean the business is turning its back on traditional bricks-and-mortar trading: “Of course we’ll always support our independent stockists and, by 2018, who knows, there may be a couple of Forever Unique stand-alone stores,” says Sandeep, noting that London, Paris and Milan are key locations, as the business looks to expand even further.

LIFESTYLE So, where does this fashion-focused family like to holiday? “I love Mykonos. It’s fabulous, friendly and the food is superb,” enthuses Seema. “Nammos Beach has a great relaxing vibe. We love hiring quad bikes and exploring the island.”

Always the businessman, Sandeep adds: “But we couldn’t get a phone signal, so I couldn’t keep in touch with the office.

We didn’t enjoy the Maldives, but loved Mauritius, and we often stop there on our trips to Dubai.”

Seema is keen to add that work and play merge when it comes to travel.

Holidays often double up as business trips; a trip to Dubai may well include a detour to meet with one of our suppliers.

The family categorically declares that Sandeep is boss. The boys agree that, if they want something, they go to dad, because when they go to mum, she sends them to dad. When dad refuses, they go to grandad!

The family maintains a work-life balance by finishing early on Fridays and spending quality time together, usually over dinner. Whether this is at home or in a restaurant, it’s up to them, but it’s a tradition they are keen to uphold. Family and friends have provided a great support network, and Seema and Sandeep have been lucky that the children’s grandparents have been able to provide invaluable help.

OFF-AIR FRIENDS When quizzed about The Real Housewives and their off-air friendships with other cast members, Seema says: “We’re good friends with Stacey Forsey, we’ll attend Dawn Ward’s charity bash, and Tanya Bardo is a huge fan of Forever Unique. I’m too busy for all that pamper malarkey and lunches, it’s just work for me.”

FAITH “We have a deep belief in our faith, and that keeps us strong and protects us,” says Sandeep “We don’t eat beef. Our son Neil is multi-faith; he believes in all religions and that’s the way it should be. Our faith keeps us grounded.”

With a team of ten people, and a wealth of experience between them, we were keen to go along to the official launch on 29th August and find out more about this fantastic venture and exciting new development for Manchester.

Welcomed by the friendly team, we were quickly escorted to the impressive Airbus EC120B; a powerful, if not slightly daunting looking, helicopter that is the pride of the fleet. We were astounded at the sheer size and grace of this magnificent machine, not to mention its ability to warm up and be in flight within just five minutes. The experience was unequivocally thrilling, and it is on days like these that we realise we really do have the best job!

Helicentre provides both commercial and private training for people wishing to learn to fly and is the leading training provider in the region. The training facilities are exemplary and they boast a 100% examination pass rate. Captain Ben Worstencroft is a flight instructor, and his experience and expertise make him the ideal person to guide students through the excitement of learning to fly. Ben has taught people to fly in as little as six months, and he says it is surprising how quickly students find themselves adept at taking to the skies. Meanwhile, Jon capably takes on the role of examiner for Helicentre. The fact that he is based there, and that it is his own business, means that people have had the chance to meet him beforehand and he is able to put them at ease before the exam. A glacier paradise: Zermatt The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise guarantees snowboarders and skiers snow all year round. Ahead of the winter season, Jill Nash discovers the best Zermatt has to offer.

EXPLORE Lying at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn is Switzerland’s most famous Alpine resort. Surrounded by 38 summits above 4,000m, Zermatt is a car-free town that is perennially popular thanks to its impressive winter and summer alpine activities.

Zermatt is the largest, highest altitude and most efficientlydeveloped snow sport location in the Alps. What’s more, for 365 days a year, it offers an absolute snow guarantee. In winter, 360km of piste attracts skiers of all levels. Unlimited skiing and snowboarding between Switzerland and Italy – no other destination can offer this. There are three lift stations accessible from Zermatt: The Gornergrat railway (next to the main railway station); the Sunnegga funicular, a couple of hundred yards away on the far side of the river; and the Furi gondola, more than half a mile from the station.

There is often good natural snow cover in the resort's ski area from early December, but artificial snowmaking allows most of the mountain to open on schedule, whatever the conditions, so you wont be disappointed.

Keen skiers can catch the first track of virgin snow between Trockener Steg and Furi at 7am; getting into the swing of things before the cable cars have even started! From 9.30am, you can treat yourself to an après-ski breakfast buffet at the restaurant Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.

Zermatt really comes alive from February onwards (prices rise again too), when the sun is higher, the challenging slopes of the Stockhorn open, and the restaurant terraces attract sun worshippers. Early in the month, the Luttman-Johnson Memorial Race – a dash between mountain restaurants – brings eccentricity to the pistes. Later in the month, the Swatch Skiers Cup draws professional freeriders to the Garten off-piste. For the more adventurous, heli-skiing or ski touring are good to try around March and April, when the crevasses are well-filled on the glaciers. Spring also brings Zermatt Unplugged, the resort's global music festival, which takes place in early April.

Zermatt is not just all about winter sports. It is also wellrecognised for its relaxed and friendly shopping; think big luxury brands, watches, jewellery and fur-lined clothing. You too can pick up cowbells, chocolate and other popular Swiss gift items as you stroll along the famous pedestrianised Bahnhofstrasse.

STAY Zermatt consistently ranks high on lists as the ‘most expensive ski resort’, partly due to its pricey lift pass and the strong Swiss franc. You can certainly splash the cash, but there is also a range of options for sleeping and eating that cater for most budgets, including modest guesthouses that sit amongst the palaces and designer hotels.

Within the town, and steps away from the Gornergrat railway and the Sunnegga lift, is the Hotel Mirabeau. It’s a delightful, friendly place and half board dining options are available for those watching their wallets. Furnished in a modern alpine style throughout, the hotel receives consistently good feedback for its gourmet cuisine, excellent service and luxurious facilities, including an indoor pool – shared with the neighbouring Ambassador Zermatt hotel – and fantastic Alpine Hideaway Spa with saunas and steam baths. They have a lovely courtyard garden for sipping cups of cocoa, and a cosy wine bar stocking a generous selection of fine Swiss wines. Rates start from £300 per room per night, minimum stay three nights, based on two sharing hotel-mirabeau.ch DRINK & DINE Dining on the slopes can be a pricey affair, but it is possible to do it on a budget if you take a packed lunch (most hotels offer this service). If you are looking for a traditional lunch option, then Fluhalp is a lovely spot and not overly expensive.

Après-ski bars are plentiful. On your way off the mountain, the longstanding Hennu Stall (on red 50) has a lively, fun atmosphere, sometimes with live music. Coming from the Sunnegga side, a stylish option is the gorgeous luxury resort Cervo (at the end of red runs 1, 2 and 3). Its après-ski bar terrace is pretty impressive and attracts an upmarket crowd.

This is also a cosy and homely place to stay, with lodge-style accommodation and unparalleled views from the hot tubs, if your pockets are deep enough (cervo.ch) In town, the well-established Gees Bar is packed with a cocktail-drinking young crowd, hosts a live band most evenings, and is open until 2am… if your legs can still carry you! zermattgees.com

siantar Architects, based in Altrincham, is not your average chartered architect practice. You’re probably aware of some of the beautiful homes and extravagant buildings that George Tsiantar and his team design, but that’s not where their talents end.

Formed in 1986, Tsiantar Architects Limited have been involved in huge and varied projects from The Orient in the Trafford Centre to a cruise ship, as well as a stunning selection of homes across the region. Principal Architect George has travelled the globe in pursuit of new opportunities, and his experiences are as fascinating as his designs.

After being enlisted to design several game lodges and a viewing platform on a game reserve in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, George jumped on the first available flight to go and do his research.

The viewing platform was intended for guests to enjoy their breakfast with a stunning view of the waterhole and the impressive landscape. George decided to take a stroll early one morning and embark on a fact-finding mission; to see where the best views were and how to incorporate this into his designs. As he’d imagined, the

views of the sunrise were breath-taking, and there was no doubt this project was going to be a memorable one.

Part of George’s remit was to ensure that the structure of the viewing platform on the hillside was not visible from the waterhole in the valley, so as not to put off the native wildlife, thus ensuring guests were able to encounter all that the area had to offer. George’s creative juices were flowing and he was already picturing how the viewing gallery could work, whilst being sympathetic towards the landscape.

After an hour of walking around the waterhole and deciding on the best spot for the platform, so it would not be silhouetted against the sky, he wandered back up the hill to find four game keepers with rifles stood on the crest of the hill.

“Anything wrong?” he asked them.

Little did George know, his beautiful morning stroll had actually taken him deep into the lion enclosure, and the rifles were for protection! The stark realisation that he was actually in a fair amount of danger led George to retreat fairly quickly.

Once he was back in the safety of his accommodation, George asked the game keeper, if things had gotten a little too close for comfort, would they have shot

the Lions with their rifles? “No Sir,” he said, “we’d have shot you to put you out of your misery, the lions are way too valuable!”

We know that every job can come with its own hazards, but we’d have thought a paper cut or a sharp pencil may have been the worst thing an architect could encounter?

knew something was up when he locked himself in the study last Sunday morning before emerging red faced, muttering “unbelievable”, “mind-boggling” and, most worrying of all, “obscene amounts of money”. Sneaking on to the laptop at lunch, I discovered he had been going through both our bank account and credit card statements. Gulp. Not good.

Not good at all.

Kicking myself for my pathetically weak passwords, I legged it to the allotment.

What if he had finally worked out how much I spend at the hairdressers, keeping those pesky greys at bay? Or perhaps he had finally twigged that M.A.C transactions have nothing to do with surviving our wet climate.

Anyhow, I gave him a few hours to cool off (i.e. drink the Boutinot) and then anxiously headed home to face the music. I knocked on the shed door. “Blueberries. Bloody blueberries,” he growled. “You’re supposed to be an expert grow-your-owner aren’t

you? So why on earth are you spending a grand each year on blueberries?”

Stupefied, I quickly did the math and realised he wasn’t far off the mark. I love blueberries and get through about five or six punnets a week. Every week. So, at about £3 a punnet, I was indeed spending over £1000 a year on them. Oops.

Backing out nervously, relieved he was still blissfully ignorant of my other spending patterns, I promised I would immediately investigate how to grow blueberries and passed him another Boutinot. So, if you too are a blueberry addict, here’s how: Blueberries are relatively easy to look after and are perfectly happy growing in pots, as long as they are filled with ericaceous (lime-hating) compost. Choose a container that is at least 12 inches in diameter for young plants, then move into a 20-inch container when it outgrows its first home.

Make sure that the container has drainage

holes and some crocking (e.g. small pieces of broken clay pots) at the bottom before filling with compost. Place in a sunny, sheltered spot for berries with the richest flavor, deepest colour and highest antioxidant content. Water with rainwater and, during the growing season and to increase yield, feed your plants every month using a liquid fertilizer specially formulated for ericaceous plants.

Most blueberries are technically self-fertile, but you will get greater crops if you plant alongside other varieties. A good way to do this is to have three pots on the go containing an early (e.g. Spartan), a mid (e.g. Duke) and a late-cropping variety (e.g. Nelson). This will extend your harvest season as, whilst the blueberries will flower about the same time, their ripening time will be staggered.

A half century of compassion As the North West's biggest hospice approaches its 50th birthday in 2021, its new Chief Executive, experienced radio presenter and former newspaper executive Eamonn O'Neal, is fulsome about why he loves the role he took up in late summer.

CHANGES IN CARE "Whereas the Chairman takes a significant overview in terms of governance, the Chief Executive is a full-time role that is highly operational,” explains Eamonn. “We are a very complex organisation with the equivalent of 350 full-time employees across our three sites and some 800 dedicated volunteers. "The changes in which care is administered today, compared with 40 years ago, reflect what's happened in society at large. The population is growing older as people are living longer and experiencing more complex medical conditions, sometimes presenting with more than one condition.

A high proportion come with cancer, but also with illnesses such as motor neurone disease and dementia. All that has the knock-on effect on the way people are cared for. We have had to adapt the care to the conditions and also in the context of the wider health economy."

As the largest hospice in the region, St Ann's has contracts with nine separate commissioning bodies across Greater Manchester, in particular Stockport, Salford and Manchester. That in itself is a complicated string of relationships but, even so, the commissioning process provides just one third of St Ann's costs, leaving twice as much to be raised through its charity shops, individual, family and commercial donations, and other fundraising activities.

BIRTHDAY AMBITION Another challenge the Chief Executive foresees stems from the fact that the hospice building in Heald Green started life in the 19th Century and has seen a variety of uses over time, including 100 years ago, a small children's hospital.

"We have been adding to it for 45 years," says Eamonn, "and we are looking at what can make it more appropriate for the next 50 years. One of my ambitions is that we might be able to celebrate our 50th birthday by opening a brand-new, purpose-built hospice that will meet the needs of the community in future years. But it will not be easy."

Eamonn sees his role – and that of his colleagues at St Ann's – not as owners of the hospice, but as "guardians" of a cherished institution; it was incumbent upon them all to look forward and hand it over in the best possible shape to future generations, as the founders had done. Some staff members had more than 30 years’ service and at least two, more than 40.

St Ann's Hospice in Heald Green has been providing inclusive, compassionate, respectful and professional care to thousands of people in the community for more than 40 years, but patients' requirements now are very different from the time when the hospice movement was in its infancy.

"The reason I have come here to work," says Eamonn, "is because I love what we do. I love what we offer. I love the way the hospice is embedded in the community and that our services are valued, particularly at difficult times in people's lives."

Though television, radio and newspapers have engaged him professionally for more than 30 years, Eamonn is no stranger to St Ann's; four members of his family were cared for at the hospice and he served as the unpaid Chairman of the charity's trustees for almost three years, whilst still working as Group Managing Editor for Trinity Mirror's regional publications, including the Manchester Evening News.

REPUTATION IS EVERYTHING Says Eamonn: "As the care for patients is becoming more complex and thus more expensive, our fundraising has to be more inventive.

But we are forever mindful that, when raising charitable donations, reputation is everything."

An added challenge, manifest recently, has followed in the wake of the devolution of health and social care to Greater Manchester. It has meant, says Eamonn, quoting one of Sir Alex Ferguson's famous phrases, that he has to be "a noisy neighbour". He adds: "Because we are not part of the National Health Service, we don't feature in the scope of the devolved authority, so I have been in negotiations with the devo chiefs to demonstrate clearly what St Ann's has to offer."

With more and more people having their own personal care plan and wanting a choice about where they end their lives, St Ann's provides a ‘Hospice at Home’ service in Salford and Trafford, as well as day care at the Neil Cliffe Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, as part of what Eamonn describes as "our menu of choice".

"As we head towards our 50th anniversary,” continues Eamonn, “we have published our clinical strategy, which is at the centre of everything we do. In conjunction with our key stakeholders, we will agree how care can best be delivered to the community. But what has not changed, despite all this, is the feedback we get from patients, families and friends, which has always been exemplary because hospices in general, and we like to think St Ann's in particular, are unique in the way they provide care."

Motorbike racer goes full throttle for lens replacement surgery with Optegra With a Sure Sidecar TT Race win to his name, John Holden shot to the motorbike racing hall of fame in 2011. After retiring from his job to race full-time, he was eager to taste victory once more – and determined not to let his eyesight stand in his way.

In any one treatment, literally hundreds of ultrasound images of the area to be treated are taken. This enables the therapist to only deliver energy, to stimulate collagen, at the level at which the scanner guides her to. Elastin helps skin to return to its original position when it is poked or pinched. As we age, our skin loses elastin, which again contributes to sagging and laxity. Since our faces are constantly subjected to movement and pressure (when we smile, sleep, talk, shout, cry, laugh or sing), the loss of elastin and collagen really can take its toll.

HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE? The length of treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure takes 60-90 minutes, whilst a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

AM I A CANDIDATE? As a result of the natural ageing process, our skin becomes less elastic. DOES IT HURT? I was given ibruprofen before the start of my treatment. In order for Ultherapy to work, it has to heat the deep layers of the skin. Everybody has different sensitivities to this heat. I don’t have a strong pain threshold, but I found it manageable. The closer it was to my eyes, the more tender it became. However, it wouldn’t put me off going back for further treatment.

THE RESULT Individual experiences and results vary, but there was definitely a feeling of lift (due to the initial contraction of collagen), and I was positively glowing when I left Medispa. In fact, I went straight to an appointment, with no time to apply make-up, and the client I was seeing couldn’t stop talking about my skin.

It’s now four weeks since my treatment and I can already see a difference, although results become more apparent over three months, with effects lasting several years.

My skin looks brighter, feels softer, and is tighter on the face and around the chin.

WOULD I RETURN FOR FURTHER TREATMENTS? If the treatment continues to improve as it has in the first month, then yes, definitely!

DUPUYTREN’S DISEASE Dupuytren’s contracture is a common, painless and benign condition affecting the hands and fingers. The disease causes a progressive deformity, resulting in one or more fingers bending into the palm of the hand. It can affect one or both hands, and sometimes the thumb.

Dupuytren’s disease occurs when there is a build-up of thick fibrous tissue in the palm that radiates into the fingers. Often, the tissue initially thickens in one area, forming a small, hard 1cm lump called a nodule under the skin of the palm. The nodule sometimes feels tender to begin with, but this usually passes with time. Over time, the nodules can extend and form cords of tissue that pass down into the finger. These cords can shorten and contract, pulling and bending the finger in towards the palm.

These contractures often cause a gradual bend initially, but steadily worsen over time.

WHO’S AFFECTED? In the older population, Dupuytren’s is found in up to a third of people, although it can also affect younger people, and is much more common in men. The exact cause of Dupuytren's contracture is unknown, but it is thought to be related to your genes, as it often runs in families.

If you have the gene that causes Dupuytren’s contracture, other factors such as diabetes, smoking and certain medications (for example, medication for epilepsy) may activate the condition.

However, it is not clear how significant these factors are.

Collagenase injections – The procedure is performed in an out-patient department and involves giving an enzyme injection into the cord. Over the proceeding 24 to 48 hours, the enzyme dissolves the cord, so that the finger can be manipulated straight after a couple of days under local anaesthetic. Mr Mike Hayton, Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon, was the first UK consultant to offer the injection outside clinical trials and has performed more than 500 injections. He has found patients return to normal function within a few days, including general day-to-day activities and even playing golf.

Radiotherapy – This is reserved for progressive early stage disease, where it affects the palm with only minor finger deformity. A specialist surgeon, like Mr Hayton, will assess suitability and refer to a consultant oncologist who specialises in radiotherapy, such as Dr James Wylie at The Christie Clinic.

Dr Wylie is one of a few UK oncologists with significant experience in treating this condition. This simple, safe and pain-free treatment can halt the progression of early stage Dupuytren’s disease in the majority of patients.

Surgery – Medical advances now mean that surgery can be performed by a specialist whilst the patient is wide awake, under a local anaesthetic, and without the use of a tight, upper arm tourniquet. Overall, this technique is favoured by patients, rather than a traditional general anaesthetic. All stitches are fully dissolvable and rehabilitation is usually coordinated by a hand therapist.

Many cases of Dupuytren's contracture are mild and do not need treatment, however, intervention may be helpful if the condition is interfering with the normal functioning of your hand.

Disability can affect common everyday tasks, impact on quality of life and the cosmetic appearance of the hand.

Dr Clare O’Donnell, Head of Optegra Eye Sciences, explains: We have recently appointed two talented PhD students who are working with the Eye Sciences team in the field of dry eye disease.

Knowing that our work helps to improve vision for thousands of people each year is very rewarding. For example, the Eye Sciences team recently trialled a new intra-operative guidance tool to assist surgeons in inserting advanced-technology ocular implants – a procedure which will help to restore sight to those suffering with visual loss due to cataracts.

When we look to the future of eye care, particularly medical, there are many exciting research projects and innovations. For example, advances in the way Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is treated (a condition that affects your central vision), micro-invasive glaucoma surgery and refractive surgery are all underway. The new SMILE technology – a bladeless, flapless, minimally-invasive alternative to laser surgery – is currently offered at our new central London hospital, but we hope to make it available to patients across the UK in the not too distant future.

My focus for the months ahead is to continue to put all efforts into these emerging technologies to ensure that Optegra remains at the forefront of eye care and research.

As well as offering a range of eye health treatments, such as laser eye surgery, cataract surgery and lens replacement to people across the North West, Optegra is also committed to the development of Eye Sciences. Our dedicated, not-for-profit research division, Optegra Eye Sciences, has been established since 2011 and works closely with our surgeon partners to evaluate new treatments and technologies, and carry out ophthalmic (eye) research. Essentially, we are here to help shape the future of eye health care.

My remit here is extremely varied but incredibly exciting. On any given day, I could be examining patients participating in an ophthalmological research study, delivering presentations at an international conference, or working with our consultant ophthalmic surgeons on clinical outcomes-related activities.

SUGAR: Your recreational drug?

Back in 1972, the late British professor John Yudkin, author of Pure, White and Deadly, wrote: “If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive, that material would promptly be banned."

His book was widely ridiculed at the time and the world instead focused (wrongly) on fat as the bogeyman. It’s only now, over four decades later, that sugar is finally being publicly outed as the cause of our obesity and Type 2 diabetes crisis. A 2015 study in the journal Circulation found that sugar-sweetened drinks kill 184,000 people a year through obesity, heart disease and cancer. (A word to the wise: diet versions are just as bad for your health!) When we consume sugar, we produce insulin, a highly inflammatory hormone that drives fat storage. Sugar has been shown to play a pivotal role in the development of almost every chronic disease: it not only increases your risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes but is a key driver of Alzheimer’s. It’s linked to higher rates of anxiety and depression and, as if all that wasn’t enough, it gives you wrinkles!

It’s not surprising that we find it so hard to give up the white stuff. Sugar lights up the same part of the brain as cocaine and, as studies on rats have shown, is eight times more addictive. There are sugar pushers every which way we look and it’s often cleverly disguised in food product labels designed to mislead us. I’ve found that the single thing most often responsible for playing havoc with people’s health, weight, mental focus, energy and general well-being is sugar. And, if you work out every day but are following up your stint at boot camp with a sugar binge, don’t think you’re being healthy – it’s impossible to out-train a bad diet! Skinny, gym-honed sugar addicts run the same risk of Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s etc. as their overweight, inactive counterparts.

Do I eat sugar myself? Yes, but not nearly so much or as often as I did a few years back when my nightly getting-through-anotherday-at-the-office reward was a bag of gummy bears. These days, I enjoy it as a treat when I fancy it or I am out for dinner. I don’t believe that a bit of sugar now and then is the issue. The problem is that we’ve lost all sense of moderation and our palates have been ruined by the fake foods pushed at us from all sides.

Knowing how bad sugar is for you doesn’t make it any easier to stop eating it, especially if it’s become your comfort mechanism.

That’s where health coaching comes into play; having someone supporting you can mean the difference between transforming your life for good or sinking back into the grasp of sugar after a stressful day. Happily, since our taste buds renew themselves every 11 days, our palates do quickly ‘wake up’ and realign themselves once we reduce our sugar intake. So take heart, I’ve watched many die-hard sweet eaters get back in control of their diet and you can do it too!

Scan It Armed with my referral letter, I ventured – or rather hobbled – into the European Scanning Centre (ESC), located next to the Etrop Grange Hotel at Manchester Airport. After injuring my knee on holiday, I was experiencing severe knee pain and an x-ray had revealed no fracture. My choices were either three weeks on codeine and ‘see how it goes’ or an MRI scan to rule out any underlying soft tissue damage.

Utilising world-class imaging technology and experienced radiographers to maximise the potential of the scanner and the best possible image quality, I checked into the plush clinic. Being aware that there is now an alternative to the traditional closed scanner, and in view of the claustrophobic and stressful experience I’d previously endured, I was delighted that the people of the North West now had this facility. Furthermore, getting my appointment was quick and effortless.

The ESC provides a truly five-star environment, where the emphasis is on comfort and relaxation, and the patient experience is key. My apprehension, based on previous experience, was immediately laid to rest; the scanner is not enclosed and is more like a convertible than a hardtop!

“We recognise that patients are apprehensive and that the best results are obtained from a less anxious patient,” says Centre Manager Anne-Marie Staples. “Consequently, we have invested in creating a relaxing, non-clinical atmosphere at our centre.”

I was made very comfortable in the scanning room, and the radiographer explained the process to me fully. The only downside was spending the next 45 minutes enduring daytime TV. My advice is: don’t say “yes” to Homes Under the Hammer when prompted “is this channel OK?”

The MROpen MRI is the only MRI scanner that enables fully open and upright imaging of the spine and joints, allowing patients to be scanned in a nonclaustrophobic and full-weight-bearing position. Imaging in the sitting or standing position, which is usually when symptoms strike, improves diagnostic capabilities and accuracy. Statistics indicate that up to 50% of patients undergoing an MRI scan in a traditional closed machine find it to be claustrophobic, with a proportion of these patients being unable to complete the procedure, as per my last experience in a mobile scanning unit.

So if, like me, you suffer from claustrophobia, find the closed MRI tunnel too narrow or need a weight-bearing scan, the facilities at the ESC could well be the answer.

Think you may need a scan, whether self-pay or privately insured? Ask your consultant or GP to refer you to the European Scanning Centre.

Turnaround time for reports is 24-48 hours and all scans are reported by the region’s leading Consultant Radiologists. I was able to make an appointment with my GP a couple of days later to get my results.

The ancient Egyptians knew a thing or two about first impressions, which is why their mummies had such beautifully adorned coffins for their journeys to the gods. So you won’t be surprised to find that they were straightening errant teeth with gold wire over 4,500 years ago. Then the Etruscans got in on the act, too, by fashioning oxen bone into dentures for missing teeth. And the Mayans, over in South America, used seashells as replacement teeth in the 7th century.

Clearly, a nice smile has always been in demand!

Then, in the 18th century, just when you think it can’t get any worse, teeth from the poor, and even cadavers, were extracted for transplantation. Thankfully, the 20th century ushered in new implant materials that wouldn’t cause sleepless nights as you pondered the previous owners of your shiny new dentures.

Metals came to the fore. Vitallium, platinum, aluminium, and stainless steel are just some of the new materials better suited for implants than, well, livestock and sea creatures. Their biocompatibility, perhaps not something those pioneering dentists from the past were too concerned about, greatly increased the success rates and

long-term outcomes of implant patients.

And thus, modern implants were born.

So, that’s quite a bit to chew on, but the most telling aspect of this fascinating history is our innate desire to project the very best aspect of ourselves that we can. How we look is, and clearly always has been, extremely important to our sense of well being and general health.

Service with a smile at San Carlo HALE BARNS I’m a big fan of the San Carlo group. They just keep growing and growing; bringing their great Italian food to more places in and around Manchester and beyond. It’s a formula that works. When asked to review San Carlo Fiorentina at the Marriot Hotel in Hale Barns, I knew what I had to do. I decided this had to be done the right way… the Italian way. I took a Friday afternoon off work, picked up my plus one and settled in for the rest of the day.

San Carlo Fiorentina boasts the signature marble bar and seafood display, which transports you to the heart of Italy as soon as you walk in. The attentive service was switched on and working well as we were shown to a booth. It was filled with lots of ladies lunching and people doing business. It had nice atmosphere and was busier than I thought it would be on a Friday afternoon in July.

I picked up the very large menu along with the specials menu. It had almost too much choice for my liking. Choice is good, but I was overwhelmed and it took me a while to choose. I went for Queen scallops to start and my plus one selected a stunning seafood stew. My scallops were good and served with a delicate, creamy sauce, but the seafood stew was out of this world. I only managed to grab one mouthful of it and had serious food envy. It had a rich, tomato-based sauce with all manner of seafood, including huge, succulent prawns.

Next time, it will be mine.

For our mains, we decided to share (shame we didn’t share our starters) and ordered the classic surf and turf of lobster and steak. It came with crispy, battered courgette fries on the side, which I didn’t love as there was too much batter. The lobster was soft and delicious and served swimming in hot garlic butter. It was utterly divine. The steak was medium rare and well-seasoned but without a sauce, which was a shame. Not to worry. A crisp, cold bottle of Verdicchio washed the whole meal down.

Dessert time. This was a struggle. I’d eaten too much. A simple Affogato for me; just good vanilla ice cream with a fresh espresso and a shot of something sweet and boozy poured over it. My plus one had a crème brûlée, which was happily devoured. It was a wonderful way to spend a Friday afternoon, and I heartily recommend it. I also recommend getting a cab.

Good wine simply has to accompany good food. And at San Carlo, you are assured of both.

It was all smiles at Ibérica, a beautiful Spanish restaurant in the centre of Spinningfields, as I was welcomed in to sample their latest menu.

The restaurant is spread across two floors, with a beautifully-designed bar and semiopen kitchen to one side. The upstairs is the perfect place to host an event and can be hired, along with the large veranda, to create a party space with plenty of atmosphere. It is placed conveniently close to several of Manchester’s theatres and attractions, making it the perfect spot to eat before a night out.

Arnero is fast becoming a local favourite, so head on over to enjoy a relaxed evening of authentic Indian food in a stunning setting.

I was there to try out their brunch menu, and it certainly exceeded my (already high!) expectations. I went for the unhealthy option and had light, beautifully-made pancakes with chocolate and banana. While my partner had eggs royale with salmon that was beautifully cooked and presented.

Despite already being pleasantly full, we shared one of their amazing milkshakes and a lemon and coconut cupcake afterwards. Everything is so delicious, it’s a struggle to decide what to select from the menu, but I know I will be back very soon to try more. This gorgeous new place is well worth a visit!

It’s the perfect place to go with a group of friends or family, as Spanish food is always best when shared across the table. My partner and I shared all the classics during our visit; from tomato bread to cheese and ham croquettes, through to the classic patatas bravas. My two personal favourites were the garlic prawns and pasta, which were absolutely bursting with flavour; and a spinach, blue cheese and pear salad, which helped refresh the whole meal.

If you’re new to Spanish cuisine, then the staff are more than happy to advise on quantities and offer their expertise on what dishes complement one another.

The attractive venue, efficient staff and high-quality food will each ensure that you walk away with a smile on your face, and a lingering taste of Spain.

Mr Cooper’s brings the outdoors indoors; the venue is gorgeous and when you take a seat, it truly feels like you are kicking back in an English country garden.

The food is beautifully presented and the portions spot on, what’s more, the pace at which they’re served is exactly right. For starters, I selected prawns and sweet cabbage, which complemented each other to perfection, while my partner had black pudding tart with apple and beetroot crisps. Our taste buds were suitably impressed! For our main courses, we both opted for the lamb. It arrived superbly well-done (as instructed) and bathing in an elegant sea of spiced lentils, surrounded by roasted sweetheart cabbage in teriyaki sauce and famous Midland truffles. Served with a side of French fries to share, our dishes were faultless.

To complete the meal, we shared a delectable peach cheesecake with blueberries and jasmine, and a caramel tart with mascarpone ice cream. It proved the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Renowned Executive Chef Simon Hardman-Taylor heads up the newlyopened Townfields Restaurant at the Best Western Cresta Court Hotel, Altrincham.

Its delicious menu serves a fantastic range of dishes, including: a braised shoulder of lamb; spicy piri-piri prawns; and a grill section offering 28-day matured steaks, succulent lamb Barnsley chop and a charred jerk salmon supreme. Real food in Levenshulme What do you get when you cross an evolutionary biologist with a molecular biologist? The answer, believe it or not – but you ought to, since it's true – is a hand-crafted Lancashire cheese and leek pie in Levenshulme.

It was at Levenshulme Market that local boy Brian, who had returned home when his mother fell ill, crossed paths with Neil.

"When you leave science for a time," says Brian, "it's difficult to get back into, so I got a job with Living Ventures and became development manager for Blackhouse Grills. Last year, I thought about opening my own place and someone told me that Neil, who was becoming well known for his presence at markets and pop-up events, was also looking for somewhere permanent.”

Together, they found the former post office in Albert Road and, from "talking about it" to opening The Buttery on 12th January, took less than three weeks, when most of the population were still in a state of festive torpor.

Food like it should be

Well, actually, you get more than that. It could be a beef and Guinness pie, or roast chicken, bacon and leek encased in delicious, crunchy, hand-raised pastry. Feeling a little, you know, adventurous? Then a pork and chorizo pie is just for you.

These are all items from the hearty and nostalgic menu at The Buttery, which has called the former Levenshulme Post Office home since January. It’s a charming, folksy, bar-cafe-restaurant and the brainchild of chef-on-a-mission Neil Buttery (the evolutionary one) and his seasoned, front of house partner Brian Shields (the molecular one).

It's a perfect match, for they have much in common. No, not biology, though there's probably some chemistry in the mix somewhere, but a mutual passion for real, traditional, proper, impeccably-sourced, expertly-fashioned, eminently comfortable British food.

"The first aim of The Buttery is to show off the best British foods, whether time-honoured classics or forgotten gems,” says avid blogger Neil. “All our food is made by hand and we don't cut corners; we make it like it should be. It's a natural progression of my interest in history and food. For several years, I have read, studied, experimented and developed many classic British recipes from cookbooks, both historical and contemporary. I found that so many foods have been lost to history, whilst many have remained unchanged for centuries."

I found The Buttery friendly and animated inside and on the outside patio. The bar – the old post office counter – sprouts hand pumps, delivering Manchester craft beers. The local stuff is supplemented by fine continental lagers and a wine list that's short, but full of interest. My starter was Locket Savoury (£5), light crusty toast with Stilton melted over thinly-sliced pears with rocket, watercress, walnut and grape salad (it was a treat), followed by pork and chorizo pie, truly a thing of beauty and served with creamy mash.

The Alchemist bar and restaurant will soon be coming to Alderley Edge with work on the former Grill on the Edge site now well underway. What a difference a year makes…

This time last year, I wrote an article about the concerns and fears that investors had regarding the shock UK election result and the budget changes it would bring.

One year on, and we have experienced yet another surprising, shock result – the UK referendum and impending exit from the EU. With sterling significantly weaker as a result (amongst many other issues), we are subject to even lower interest rates; leaving those who rely on an income from their bank deposits in a challenging position.

However, the good news is that the UK stock market, in general terms, has performed well, and most equity-based investors’ 12-month annual statements should make good reading.

The recent volatility in both currency and equity markets can be unnerving to investors, as these indexes move up and down with both national and worldwide events. All these factors have an important effect on the way we think and can often prevent us from doing what is the right thing when it comes to our investment

planning; perhaps making us delay important decisions or changing long-term investment plans at an inappropriate time.

Think you need a strong partner when your marriage ends?

When faced with a breakdown of your marriage, one of the most important decisions you will have to make is choosing who will represent you and your interests.

Like most important decisions, you will gather a wealth of information from as many sources as you can and speak with all the people you think understand what you are going through. Whilst this may seem like it is helping in the moment, it may also give a false sense of security and preparedness.

Or worse, it may make you even more unsure and confused.

Before losing countless hours searching for these answers, you can cut down your time by asking yourself a couple of key questions. As an experienced family lawyer, and someone who has personally confronted divorce, these questions will ultimately help you to define your divorce profile and help you to more effectively find the relationship you want and need in your solicitor.

The two key questions to ask yourself is what kind of divorce do you expect it to be between you and your former partner and what kind of support do you need to work through it?

In my experience divorces tend to fall into the following categories:

Bitter or sweet

Unpredictable

If the situation between your ex-spouse is extremely bitter and hostile, you will need a lawyer who can put up a fight, someone strong with age and experience on their side. If, in comparison, you are on reasonable terms with your ex, then you will need a lawyer who will encourage positive dialogue, and who will not be shy to instigate round table meetings, where face to face negotiations can take place.

If you do not believe that your spouse will be honest or you fear they have hidden assets, then you will need a lawyer who has been specifically trained to wade through financial disclosure and undertake a tracing exercise to bring forward any concealed assets. In addition, you may need a lawyer who knows the best professionals to appoint, such as private investigators, to help to trace missing funds.

Business

Families with children

If you have a business that you have worked desperately hard to build, then you will require a solicitor that understands the complexities this dimension adds to a divorce. In addition, you need to ensure that the lawyer appointed has access to the best possible experts, who can assist with the valuation of your business and identify areas where you may be vulnerable.

Alternatively, if your spouse has a business, to which you know little about, then it is imperative that the lawyer can stand in your shoes and get to the bottom of what the business is worth and what your rights and entitlements are.

Divorce that involves children more often than not is likely to be one of the most emotional and difficult times you will ever experience. Very few family lawyers actually have a significant level of expertise in this area. Looking for somebody who is a member of the Advanced Children Law Panel is a must.

Do I always need a lease?

Disputes often arise due to a badlydrafted or a non-existent lease.

Property owners, commercial tenants or residential landlords should always ensure that a lease is in place which accurately reflects the terms of the landlord and tenant relationship. A well-drafted document may avoid problems in the long run, but if there is a dispute then seek legal advice.

Can I bring a claim for bad investment advice?

Yes, either through a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service or by issuing a claim against your adviser in negligence or breach of contract, if you were advised to invest in an inappropriate way.

If you were misled, there may be claim in deceit or misrepresentation.

How much does it cost to issue a claim?

This depends upon the amount you are claiming. The court fee can be zero or up to £10,000. The cost of a lawyer, and the risk of paying the other side’s costs if you lose, should also be taken into account. My child is having tantrums – what do I do?

Tantrums are normal, and often the only way children can express frustration. Organise your child’s routine, choose your battles, keep them safe and let them calm down, as only then are they ready to hear you. Giving your child two options to choose from helps; they regain some control by making a choice.

My children won’t eat the food I want them to eat. Help!

Don’t force them; give tiny portions at first. At nursery, fussy eaters sit with good eaters and staff at mealtimes, so they can copy and learn good eating habits. It can take many tastings before children accept new tastes, so persevere.

Don’t make refusal a big deal and praise trying new foods.

How can I best prepare myself and my child for settling into nursery?

Talk positively and frequently about it, explaining the new routine. Mention your child’s carers at home. Show confidence, it will reassure them. Don’t prolong saying goodbye; there will be tears, but they will pass. Call the nursery for updates and remember, with a new routine, tears can be tiredness.

Who is an Architect?

An Architect is a highly-educated professional operating within a governing body. All Architects are bound by an ethical code of conduct and backed by an insurance policy to provide the client with the protection they need, should the service not be as expected. You can find out who is and who is not an Architect by checking the Architects Registration Board (ARB).

Are all architectural services the same?

Not in principle. Architectural Technicians and Technologists provide 'architectural services' and are highly qualified in the 'technical' aspects of building.

However, only an Architect, after a minimum seven years of training, can design proportion, style and elegance into a house. Architects are the ones who are skilled in making buildings function and flow as a home.

How do you accommodate people's requests during the design process?

Having your new home designed exclusively for you by a professional Architect means that all your needs can be considered from the start.

Not just the basic features, style and accommodation but also special requirements, such as self-contained accommodation for elderly relatives, extra soundproofing to budding rock stars’ bedrooms, or even roofs that open up to the stars.

How much can I now put in my pension?

It depends. In general, £40,000 per year which can be backdated for up to three years. However, rules mean those earning over £150,000 per annum are now restricted to as little as £10,000 per year, which is why higher earners are starting to look at alternative investments.

What should I do with my final salary pension?

The advice has always been to leave it where it is. However, as the pension lifetime allowance has now been restricted to £1 million, some people should look at other available options, which give better spousal benefits and Inheritance Tax advantages. This requires specialist advice.

What financial paperwork do I need to keep?

Clients often keep and methodically file ALL paperwork received. Our record is a six-foot-high pile! We recommend keeping illustrations, key features policy documents and your last two statements. How can family contact hours be negotiated in the case of a divorce?

Most separating couples agree this between themselves, but if they are unable to do so, then they can attend mediation. An impartial mediator will help them reach an arrangement which is in their, and their child/children’s, best interests.

If neither of these approaches succeed, the court decides who a child should live with and how much time they should spend with the other parent.

Who gets to keep the house?

This will depend on whether one spouse can afford to take over the mortgage by themselves, and whether there are sufficient additional assets (aside from the equity in the house) to distribute to the other spouse. In many cases where there are limited assets, the house has to be sold to enable both spouses to be rehoused.

What is the average timescale of a divorce settlement?

The average timescale is six to 12 months. A lot depends on how much co-operation there is between the separating couple.

If one spouse is not prepared to disclose financial details or certain key issues are not agreed, the process can take up to 18 months, or longer in some instances.

Bright future beckons for budding musicians

A quartet of talented pupils from Stockport Grammar School have been accepted to become members of Manchester’s most prestigious youth choir and orchestra.

Violinists Elsa Shah and Zoe Shah from Marple successfully passed auditions to join the Hallé Youth Orchestra, whilst singers Olivia White from Cheadle Hulme and Georgia Curwen from Heaton Mersey secured places in the Hallé Youth Choir.

Hallé Youth Orchestra offers talented young instrumentalists the chance to experience playing in a full symphony orchestra, supported by professional musicians. Since it was set up in 2002, the orchestra has performed at venues such as the Royal Opera House in London, Manchester Opera House and Bridgewater Hall. They also go on regular tours around the UK and Europe.

The Hallé Youth Choir, established in 2003, is recognised as one of the leading mixed-voice youth choirs in the country.

Members regularly get the chance to sing with the Hallé Choir and have performed at the BBC Proms, as well as appearing on Manchester band Elbow’s Build a Rocket Boys! album. This opportunity saw the choir perform on the BBC’s Comic Relief and Later… with Jools Holland.

Elmscot group of day nurseries celebrates team’s long service Elmscot – the childcare group with four day nurseries and nursery schools in Cheshire’s Timperley and Hale gathered together with some very special team members recently; those who have worked for the group for over five or 10 years. It was an opportunity to celebrate their long service and to thank them for their commitment and hard work throughout that time.

Elmscot Group of nurseries employs 135 permanent staff, 43 of which have five years or more service; that’s 31.85% of the entire permanent workforce. Each of the staff members received a certificate, a token of appreciation, and a new name badge, which illustrated their many years of service.

Stephanie Molnar and Dee McKenzie, Directors of the Elmscot Group, said: “We wouldn't have achieved the high standards we strive for without our team, so this is the least we could have done to acknowledge their hard work; thanking them for all the years they spent with us to make a difference to the children and their families we provide the service for.”

great Altrincham Bake off champion

A Year 7 student from North Cestrian School has been crowned the winner of The Great Altrincham Bake Off 2016.

Jemima Worth triumphed as star baker in the competition, which saw pupils from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls perform their best Mary Berry impressions and bake to impress a panel of judges. Required to bake a two-tier celebration cake, Jemima

made a birthday cake with a victoria sponge top tier and a surprise bottom tier. The cake was covered with pink and white marbled fondant icing, and finished with hand-crafted fondant flowers and pink piping at the base.

Speaking about the competition, Jemima said: ‘‘Competing in The Great Altrincham Bake Off was a really enjoyable experience, and to be announced the winner was just the icing on the cake! ‘‘The final round was particularly nerve-racking, as I could see the amazing cakes being created by the other finalists, but I kept my focus and concentrated on doing the best I could. ‘‘I was really pleased that the judges chose my cake as the winner – it turned out the best I could have hoped for!”

gcSE results of distinction for didsbury girls

Three Didsbury pupils at Manchester High School for Girls are celebrating glowing GCSE results. Rebecca Lipscomb, Lily Smith and Martha Mitchell all achieved a string of nine A* grades, topped off with an A* with distinction (the ‘super’ A*) in Additional Mathematics.

80% of all grades at the city’s oldest all-girls school were the much sought-after

A* to A, with 96% of all marks falling into the A* to B range. Overall, 67 girls chalked up eight or more A* and A grades.

Half of the year group at Manchester High School for Girls opted to take the Additional Mathematics paper, of which 69.2% achieved an A* with distinction or A*.

Rebecca Lipscomb commented: “All summer, I’ve been hoping for good results, but these are beyond anything I imagined!

All the hard work has certainly been worth it, and the teachers here have been so supportive and encouraging along the way.

I can’t wait to become part of our school’s Sixth Form and will be studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.”

Lily Smith said: “I’m overjoyed with

these results. Yes, I worked hard, but wow, totally unexpected! I’m going to be taking forward Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry to A Level and Religious Studies, which will bring a nice balance to my choices. Martha Mitchell secured an A* with distinction in Additional Mathematics and nine A*s, one of which was Art and Design.

She commented: “Being able to balance my love of art, alongside subjects such as Mathematics and Science has, I think, been the secret to my success. Having an outlet for my creativity helps me clear my mind for the more traditionally challenging subjects.”

gcSE grade success for Alderley girls Alderley Edge School for Girls is delighted to report that there has been a significant improvement in results this year; almost half of all grades achieved were at A* to A. Whilst outstanding results were achieved across the board, impressive individual performances included: Ann-Michelle Mull with 11 A* grades; Rowdah Charbak with nine A* and two A

grades; Claudia Persico with eight A* and three A grades; Fiona Smith with seven A*s, one A and two B grades; and Katrina Thornber with five A* and four A grades.

Special congratulations should also go to Chikako Kawato who achieved four A*, four A and two B grades, despite English being her second language.

A 100% pass rate was achieved in

several subjects including ICT, History, Religion and Philosophy, and all three science subjects – with 91% of grades achieved at A* or A in Biology and Chemistry. In contrast to the declining national trend, the school had a high number of girls taking modern foreign language subjects and nearly 60% of passes were awarded A* to A.

South Manchester girls scoop exceptional GCSE results

South Manchester pupils from Withington Girls' School are amongst the top performers in this year’s outstanding raft of GCSE results. High achievers included: Sasha Geim from Didsbury, who achieved a clean sweep of the elite top grades with 11 A*s, including an A* with distinction for Further Mathematics; Ayswarya Dayal

from Withington, who secured nine A*s, including an A* distinction in Further Mathematics; Janani Anandarajah, also from Withington, was awarded eight A*s and three A grades; and Didsbury’s Emily Bourne achieved eight A*s and two As. Orla Conlan, also from Didsbury, earned seven A*s and four As, whilst Fallowfield pupil Rosie Barry achieved three A*s and seven A grades.

Withington’s Year 11 cohort of 83 girls attained A* grades in 72.2% of GCSE papers taken this year, with an exceptional 95.5% attaining grades A* to A. All GCSE and IGCSE papers taken were passed, with 65 girls earning six or more A* grades, and 14 girls sweeping the board with straight A* grades in all their subjects.

In many subjects, A* was the average grade achieved, including Greek (where A* made up 100% of entries), ICT (98%), Chemistry (95%), Physics (87%), Biology (87%), Further Mathematics (83%), Geography (83%), Mathematics (82%), Double Science (77%), Art (78%), Drama (75%) and Music (73%). In Further Mathematics, half of the 52 entries were awarded the even higher accolade of an A* grade with distinction.

Every Withington girl also achieved at least one GCSE in a modern foreign language, with the majority being awarded an A* or A grade; French (96%), German (85%) and Spanish (79%).

These exceptionally high standards were maintained in English Language and English Literature, where 98% and 90% of entries respectively were graded either A* or A.

Parrs Wood High School record-breaking results Parrs Wood High School reported record-breaking GCSE outcomes for their 2015/16 Year 11 cohort. Following consistently good outcomes in previous years, 72% of Year 11s achieved at least five A* to C, including English and Mathematics, which is exceptional considering the ongoing changes to syllabuses, assessments and grade thresholds.

Schools locally and nationally are once more coming to terms with unannounced, increased grade thresholds, particularly in Mathematics. Often it is the most disadvantaged students who are most adversely affected by these changes, which make year-on-year improvements in outcomes even more challenging for schools to realise.

The Grange School celebrate GCSE results The continued hard work of pupils at The Grange School in Hartford has this year secured another set of notable GCSE results, with an impressive 94.4% A* to B grades. Just over 75% of all examination results were awarded at A or A*, with 33% of pupils achieving nine or more A* and A grades.

This high level of achievement, with each pupil gaining on average an A grade in all subjects, has been overseen by Head of Year Rick Hibbert. As well as leading the Modern Languages Faculty, he has been Head of Year to this age group for 21 years; guiding this year’s students to the results we all celebrate today.

MgS celebrates as 28% of students collect A* grades Thomas Browne, Altrincham and Harrison Engler, Bowdon

The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) is celebrating another year of outstanding examination results for its Sixth Form pupils. Boys arrived at school to pick up their results and discovered that 28% were at the coveted A* grade. 66% of all grades were at A* to A. This year, for the first time in the school’s history, boys were

given the opportunity to study the Cambridge Pre-U courses, with a Distinction 2 being equivalent to an A* at A Level, and the top grade of Distinction 1 being a grade above A* at A Level. Thomas Browne from Hale was one of the students who opted for the new qualification and gained a D1 in History, plus a D1 in German, an A*

in Mathematics and an A in French.

Speaking of his success, he said: “I’m ecstatic! I just want to say thank you to the teachers at MGS – you can’t do it without them. They put in so many extra hours, and to have that kind of motivational support behind you is fantastic – I’m just so happy.

“I really am very pleased about my two D1s, as it was a new concept for our school year and we quickly found that it was much harder than the A Level – I suppose that’s made the result all the more satisfying.

“I have an Oxford offer, so I’ll be heading there in September. It’s just amazing. You always get nervous beforehand, but I checked the UCAS website this morning, so I knew I had the place at Oxford, but to then see the results in black and white is just amazing!”

Superb A Level results for Manchester’s oldest girls’ school

70% of all grades at Manchester High School for Girls were the coveted A* and A, with 94% of all marks secured in the A* to B range.

Seven members of the school’s Class of 2016 achieved a string of straight A*s. Four of these girls have now met demanding Oxbridge offers and will take up undergraduate places at these leading universities in September.

Ebubechi Okpalugo from Sale secured the highest grades possible in Biology, Chemistry and Fine Art, and will now progress to study Medicine at the University of Oxford.

Three girls are Cambridge-bound.

Emma Lyons from Didsbury secured an outstanding four A*s in Biology, Chemistry, German and Mathematics, and will study Natural Biological Sciences at Churchill College in Cambridge. Emma will be joined at the same college by fellow Didsbury resident Sarah Strickland. Sarah will read Human, Social and Political Sciences after achieving A*s in Chemistry, Geography and History.

Bramhall’s Rebecca Hopper makes up MHSG’s Oxbridge quartet. After securing A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, Rebecca has accepted a place to study Veterinary Medicine at the University of

Cambridge’s Pembroke College.

MHSG has two veterinary success stories this year, the second being Phoebe Arkwright from Burnage. With three As in Biology, Chemistry and German, she has secured a much sought-after place on the University of Bristol’s Veterinary Science course.

It is not just in STEM subjects that Manchester High students excel. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a self-directed and self-motivated project that carries the same UCAS points as an AS Level.

90% of all Manchester High pupils undertaking the qualification received an A*.

Local girls celebrate excellent A-Level results Withington Girls’ School is celebrating yet another set of exceptional A Level results, with girls from the Altrincham and Sale areas amongst its top performers. Altrincham students Deeya Kotecha, Sabrina Ruia, France Li, Alexis Phillips, Sadie Tully and Michaela Greibach all returned strong results.

Deeya is heading to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to read Medicine after achieving a clean sweep of A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Meanwhile, Sabrina secured her place at Oxford University’s Exeter College to study French, after notching up two A*s in French and History, and an A in English Language.

Frances Li clinched A*s in Economics, History and Mathematics, and will now be studying PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at the London School of Economics. Alexis Phillips secured A*s in Spanish, General Studies and her EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), as well as A grades in Economics and English Language.

She will now go on to study Language and Culture at University College London. Sadie Tully is to study Natural Sciences at Durham, after achieving A*s in Biology and Maths, and an A in Economics. Michaela Greibach, who achieved A grades in French, German and Politics, will study French at Bristol.

Speaking with confidence at Stella Maris

Pupils are presented with their LAMDA certificates in assembly.

Pupils at Heaton-based Stella Maris independent primary school were celebrating fantastic results in their recent speech exams, with a 100% pass rate and over 90% of the pupils passing with merit or distinction. The exams are run by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and help children improve their communication skills, increase selfconfidence and develop strong social skills. 21 pupils aged from four to 11 years took exams ranging from Solo Introductory Stage One, where children had to memorise and recite a poem to the examiner, to Level 1 Award in Performance: Acting, where children were required to act out a monologue. Head Teacher Norah Johnson, commented: “The children put a lot of effort into their speech lessons and it is fantastic that their hard work has been recognised with these outstanding results.

This gives the children confidence to speak in public and is a valuable asset for life.”

MgS students welsh Three Peaks challenge

Cousins from The Manchester Grammar School are preparing to take on the gruelling Welsh Three Peaks Challenge to help refugees in war-torn countries. Marvy Nerwan, 17, and his cousin Hukam Nerwan, 16, set up the first Sikh Society in the school’s 500-year history last year.

Initially set up to help young Sikhs feel at home, the society is now open to all boys at the school and its members are drawn from many different religions and backgrounds, helping to

create a strong sense of community between them. The cousins from Altrincham have also been raising money for charity, and next month they will walk the 17m (27.4km) Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in just 24 hours to raise money for Khalsa Aid. Khalsa Aid is a non-profit organisation that mainly helps out in war-torn areas, such as Syria and Iraq. They give clean water and food to refugees, and provide safe havens for those at risk of persecution.

As the boys explained: “One of the society’s main purposes is to give to charity. Charity is hugely emphasised in Sikhi, which we refer to as Dasvandh. “We chose Khalsa Aid because it’s a hugely admirable and commendable organisation.

We want to help support the thousands of refugees who are facing everyday struggles and fear for their lives.

“It’s really important to us to help those suffer from evils in this world, and those who are not as fortunate as everyone else.”

The boys will firstly climb Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, before tackling Cadair Idris and then Pen y Fan on the second day. Not content with the challenge of tackling the three peaks, the cousins have also set themselves the ambitious challenge of raising at least £5,000. Meet youth activist and all-round superman Geoff Thompson MBE, FRSA, DL.

his five-time karate world champ, international sports ambassador, recipient of umpteen honorary degrees, expert personal coach and present-day Greater Manchester Deputy Lieutenant, founded the Youth Charter in 1993. A UN-accredited non-governmental organisation, Geoff ’s Manchester-based charity promotes sport, arts, culture and technology to improve the lives of deprived youngsters both at home and abroad. 23 years on, Geoff remains utterly committed. Supported by Louisville’s Muhammad Ali Center and over 260 international sporting heroes, including David Beckham, Dame Sarah Storey and Sir Bobby Charlton, the Youth Charter now offers its life-enhancing opportunities on three community campuses in Greater Manchester.

What drives your passion for helping young people?

Society judges you on how you treat your old and young. My world collapsed at seven when my father died. My dear mother, a devout Guyanese nurse, was broke. We moved from Wolverhampton to London’s East End and learned her hard work ethos — at eleven, I’d sell her homemade patties after school. But I also showed signs of the proverbial teenage ‘bad boy’; angry about my dad’s death, racial prejudice and life. But on a 5th form school trip, I saw my first live karate demonstration, and changed forever.

Sport took me off the streets. If it worked for me, it would work for others, and has done.

How important are the accolades you gained by swapping your ‘tracksuit for a lounge suit’?

They’re my passport, my entry to introducing sport and culture into youngsters’ lives. Those honours, well, I just wanted them for my parents.

What prompted the Youth Charter?

In January 1993, Benji Stanley, 14, an innocent boy, was murdered outside a Moss Side takeaway – one of 170 deaths over 20 years. I had to do something. I knew extra-curricular activities improve children’s confidence, proficiency and employability. That March, one hundred Moss Side and London kids, alongside many celebs, attended the Youth Charter’s launch at Wembley. By 1995, we had over 20 projects running UK-wide. But most memorable was the signing of eight Youth Charter validation scrolls in South Africa with Mandela present in 1996.

What has been your focus for 2016?

Our motto is ‘Engage, Equip and Empower’. Being effective requires a co-ordinated approach. After the London Olympics, and since delivering our 2013 Youth Legacy Statement at Westminster, we’ve worked on establishing community campuses. These may be a school, youth club, further education college, sports centre or any communal space within

one locality for over- 5s to enjoy up to five hours free Youth Charter activities a week, taught voluntarily by trained social coaches. Admittedly, it’s hard prising today’s kids off their phones and gadgets.

Everything’s about instant gratification, the quickest options. But once youngsters complain they’re bored, we’re right in there, and they’re soon hooked.

And what does the future hold?

At Media City on 21st October, Commons’ Speaker John Bercow is chairing our 4-year progress review and hearing our plans post-Rio as we work towards the 2020 Games. Ultimately, we want 10,000 social coaches in 10 cities to engage one million youngsters digitally and interactively on 20 community campuses in the UK and more worldwide. Mind you, we need a Royal Commission on Youth, Youth Ministry and a Youth Parliament.

We’re very Youth Charter! My wife Janice was a world karate champ, our three children study sport and art and business.

KNUTSFORD Literature Festival If you’re a serious book lover, the 17th annual Knutsford Literature Festival really is a must. Initially a one-off event to mark the Millennium, it has now morphed into a prestigious civic highlight.

A VERITABLE BARGAIN From day one, the festival has attracted a strong following, as committee member and retired landscape gardener Hannah Hulton explains: “Over time, we learnt that our clientele prefers non-fiction, so we select work published in hardback or paperback within the last 12 months. Our Friends Membership is £5 a year, including priority booking for our LitFest events, which are usually £5 too. This amount is often redeemable on buying the featured hardback.”

Topics covered by this year’s seven authors in attendance range from biography, art, music and nature to espionage and history – something to appeal to most tastes. Michael Rosen has appeared in the past, so children are not forgotten either.

THE SESSIONS Former English teacher and committee Chairman Liz Kempster says: “Writers speak for up to an hour, followed by 20 minutes of questions from the floor, a book signing and refreshments. We also encourage authors to describe their work-in-hand to promote future interest. Waterstones, who’ve sponsored John Suchet this year, are always most supportive; supplying the books and displaying backlists for extra sales.

Our ticket price is incredible – and we’re proud to be one of the few festivals to offer discount against the cost of hardbacks.”

The festival is organised by a committee of four volunteers, avidly supported by 190 patrons, and sponsored by Waterstones of Knutsford, who supply the books for each event.

Join the Tribe Kirsty Day catches up with former Coronation Street stars Lee Boardman and Jennifer James as they bring their acting academy, Actor Tribe, to Stockport.

After more than two decades working as a successful actor on both stage and screen, Lee Boardman still counts himself as “one of the lucky ones”. Growing up in Reddish, Stockport in the 1980s, opportunities to break into the acting business were sparse.

But, says Lee, he will be forever indebted to an inspirational high school teacher who encouraged him to pursue his dream.

Lee has never forgotten the belief this teacher had in him and it inspired the actor and his wife Jennifer to make sure youngsters and adults from his hometown, Greater Manchester and Cheshire gain the opportunities he never had as a child and succeed in an industry that is notoriously difficult to break into.

Three years ago, the couple – who met on the set of Coronation Street – set up Actor Tribe, an acting academy in Knutsford.

The academy, whose patrons include Lee’s best friends and former Corrie cast members Suranne Jones and Sally Lindsay, proved a huge success. Now, a new branch has opened its doors to aspiring actors in Heaton Mersey, Stockport.

“I may as well have said I wanted to be an astronaut when I was growing up,” says Lee, “because the idea of me being an actor at the time was so absurd. But having belief from that one teacher was so important, and it was the same for Jenny when she was at school.”

The Cheshire-based couple – who have two children of their own – are passionate about passing on their knowledge and skills, and being the inspiration behind the next generation of local acting talent. They want to give students the experience and confidence to shine on set, on stage or at a casting call.

As well as bringing in the best acting tutors to teach at the Stockport Academy, Lee and Jenny say it is important for them to be hands-on in the classes across both branches, to provide a nurturing environment, and to deliver masterclasses from top agents, directors and celebrated performers such as Peter Kay.

There are three age groups: Act 1 for ages 7 to 11; Act 2 for 11 to 16; and Act 3 for 16+ with no upper age limit. Classes are £17 per 90-minute session (payable per term) and there is a 10% discount for siblings.

However, it is about much more than helping young people secure acting jobs.

The couple want them to feel part of something: “It is more than just an acting school and we are very proud of that,” says Jenny. “We’ve had children join who have been having a difficult time at school and, having experienced bullying myself in high school, I know how that feels. We are delighted they find somewhere to fit in.

“Being different is celebrated in this industry, so we make sure they know it is ok. It sounds like a cliché, but we really do care for the children like one big family, we really are a tribe.”

I can think of a few reasons from recent experience. First of all, even though the Kindle app on your tablet mimics almost all of the functions of a Kindle device, the screen of the tablet just isn’t up to the job of reading in direct sunlight. Even if you set it to maximum contrast and brightness, you’re still going to strain your eyes, plus its reflective surface is a nightmare in bright daylight.

By the time you read this, the beach reading season will be well and truly over. At time of writing, we’re approaching the end of the summer holidays, which means another annual session of attempting to read books on a sun lounger is still fresh in my mind.

This is one of life’s greatest pleasures, if you can pull it off: a good book and an entire day with nothing to do but read it in the sunshine. But it requires some planning; books can get really messed up with sun lotion and sand, and can even fall apart in direct sun if the glue melts. I’m sure that was one of the main reasons why e-readers were invented.

Secondly, while a tablet is incredibly versatile, this can actually be a curse as well as a blessing. With the entire Internet right there in your hand, it’s all too easy to get distracted when you really ought to be completely lost in a good book.

Thirdly, the relative complexity of a tablet makes it inappropriate for the beach. You don’t want to worry about it getting nicked (along with your personal data) while you jump in the water to cool off. It’s also prone to overheating and going into sleep mode if you try and use it on a really scorching day.

An e-reader, therefore, is a perfect companion to a tablet. The cheapest Kindle starts from just £59.99, and there are supermarket deals even cheaper than that. These devices are perfect for a completely clear reading experience in daylight and have audio options for audiobooks, plus enough battery life and memory for more books than you could ever read on one holiday. The most expensive Kindle Oasis, meanwhile, is still cheaper than most decent tablets, at £269.99, and here’s a possible clincher: battery life on this model (with its included booster case) is as long as nine weeks!

Just like so many of my gadget reviews then, this is not a case of either/or.

Once again, I’m going to be greedy and say I want both.

So this brings me to a common debate – e-reader versus tablet. Let’s look at some pros and cons.

Firstly, most of us already have a tablet.

Since you can easily buy, download and read e-books on your iPad mini, for example, why might you need a Kindle? Why carry two devices onto the plane?

This issue, we took a look at BMW’s latest super-limo, the sixth generation 7 Series. But we didn’t have time to really put it through its paces, so we asked guest reviewer and renowned chef Aiden Byrne to enjoy it for a few days instead.

Aiden is well known around these parts, both for the Church Green in Lymm and the sumptuous Manchester House, and also for his regular TV work. He recently attended an awards ceremony (where he won Chef of the Year, of course) and needed a fancy car to turn up in. That’s why Williams BMW supplied him with the brand new 740d.

Normally, if you turn up at a posh do in a posh car, you expect a man in a hat to do the driving for you. But this is a BMW (the “ultimate driving machine”) and even its biggest limos are best enjoyed from the front seat.

Aiden agreed: “I felt like I was being chauffeured to the function, even though I was driving myself!” he said.

“This demonstrates just how enjoyable and relaxing the car is to drive.”

Aiden was enthusiastic about the level of gadgetry; from the key fob with its own touchscreen technology and the gesture control that adjusts computer functions with simple hand movements, to the soft leather massage seats and four-zone climate control. the parallels between the luxury environment that BMW has created and the experience that he provides to diners at Manchester House: “We are keen to transport them from reality and into a universe of indulgence and comfort, which mirrors the feeling when driving, or being driven, in this particular model.”

While Aiden was impressed by the calming and relaxing qualities of the “effortless and smooth” engine, there’s more to it than that. The performance range of this model is astounding; it can accelerate like a sports car (even in spite of its immense size), yet is still capable of returning over 40 mpg. The range of driving modes reflects this; with exhilarating and sporty handling at one end of the scale, and a clever adaptive technology at the other, which sets the car up to your individual driving style and route characteristics. As Aiden points out, this is ideal for commuters who want to enjoy being in the car and not stress about the road.
