PROTECT THE NHS
After almost two decades of writing this letter, I don’t really know where to start, but I know that over the Christmas break we were looking at holidays, and now we are looking at our four walls.
Who’d have thought that a virus was going to change our lives to this extent. I’m not moaning; I can work from home, I have food, I have my family around me – those members who aren’t here are safe – and I won’t be short of things to do. Most important at the moment, is that we all remain healthy.
It took a long while for a lot of people to get their heads around this, including my family, but I was fully on board from day one. I think because, in 2009, I contracted swine flu, months after undergoing chemotherapy. I have vivid memories of feeling very well one minute and lying on the office floor, as if someone had sucked all the life out of me, the next. I don’t know how my daughterin-law managed to get me down the stairs, into the car and home. I flopped on the sofa and couldn’t even lift my head to drink, someone had to hold the cup so I could drink out of a straw.
SAVE LIVES
”
I don’t want Covid-19 and I don’t want to put anyone else at risk, so it’s simple, STAY HOME to STAY SAFE, and by doing this, we are helping our amazing NHS, whose staff are risking their lives to save others.
As a business, we are entering unchartered trading conditions, as are many of our clients, which means there are going to be challenging times ahead. We appreciate all your support and wish you, your family and friends the best of health and wellbeing. Until next time,
Beverley x

Quayside MediaCityUK Lifestyle Outlets rebrands Lowry Outlet as part of £26-million development
Lifestyle Outlets, part of Peel L&P, has announced that it is rebranding Lowry Outlet now that work is well underway on what is set to be one of the region’s most exciting and vibrant leisure destinations. Quayside MediaCityUK will be home to ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Jungle Challenge – an immersive, first-of-its-kind attraction opening in Autumn 2020 alongside a recently redeveloped state-of the-art Vue Cinema, Virgin Active and The Watergardens. Jason Pullen, Managing Director of Lifestyle Outlets, said:
“We are hugely proud of our connection with the Lowry Arts Centre, which will always be part of our identity. The name Quayside MediaCityUK has been chosen to reflect our unique location as the retail and leisure heart of MediaCityUK as well as celebrating our Salford Quays and dockside heritage.
“While outlet shopping is at the heart of what we do, Quayside MediaCityUK offers much more than a traditional outlet for our visitors, with an enhanced leisure offering, great events and entertainment, world-class museums and theatres as neighbours, plus we’re an exciting place to live and work. Quayside MediaCityUK is much more representative of the vibrant waterfront location we are becoming and with ITV and The Watergardens opening this year, 2020 is due to be our most exciting year yet.” The Watergardens will bring a variety of restaurants, bars and coffee shops, each opening from Autumn 2020. A new waterfront terrace will be home to a range of restaurants with unrivalled views across the Quays, while an iconic building called The Glasshouse, with two-storey, 270-degree waterside views, will offer a combination of bars and dining. An additional bespoke leisure restaurant, The Treehouse, will be located adjacent to the new ITV I’m A Celebrity Jungle Challenge. The new branding will be introduced in phases across the estate’s assets as well as an updated website and social media channels.

Eamonn O'Neal appointed new High Sheriff of Greater Manchester
The Chief Executive of St Ann's Hospice has been chosen by the Queen as the next High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. The appointment of Eamonn O’Neal was formally announced by Buckingham Palace and he will take up his ceremonial role next month.
The father-of-three from Sale has been a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester for six years. He will be installed as High Sheriff at The Monastery in Manchester on Friday 17th April, succeeding Mark Adlestone OBE DL. O’Neal, who will hold office for 12 months, has been CEO of the Greater Manchester hospice since 2016 following a successful career in television, radio and newspapers. He said: "It's a huge honour and quite humbling to be chosen as the High Sheriff of Manchester. I’m grateful to have the chance to connect and engage with the charitable, voluntary, faith, ethnic, cultural and business communities across the county."
At that time the Sheriff represented the monarch, collected taxes, raised armies and was the rule of law across the county. O’Neal said: "I won’t be collecting taxes or raising an army, but as High Sheriff, I'll be proud to represent the Queen as the ceremonial head of the judiciary in the county.
The role Office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular title in British history and among the most ancient in the world, dating back more than 1,300 years.
“I’ll be dedicating the High Sheriff appointment to our patients, staff, families and volunteers and the other charities I work with."
"I also regard this Royal appointment as recognition of the great work done by St Ann’s Hospice in looking after the communities of Greater Manchester for many years. St Ann’s is one of the oldest and largest hospices in the country and we’re about to celebrate our 50th anniversary.
Arctic walk in aid of St Ann’s Hospice
Didsbury resident Maria Stripling put her best foot forward as she completed an epic 80km Arctic walk in aid of St Ann’s Hospice. The event organiser trained for months to build her strength for the three-day expedition, which saw her walking in temperatures below minus 20 degrees Celsius, pulling her belongings on a sled in snow and strong winds. Maria has so far raised over £7,500 for the hospice via a range of initiatives, but she’s continuing her campaign to raise £20,000 by the end of June with an open gardens event in Didsbury and donating her fees for a Japanese garden design project. The Prosecutor by Nazir Afzal North West’s Chief Crown Prosecutor from 2011 till 2015, the irrepressible Nazir Afzal OBE says what he believes and believes what he says. He then instigates action
Unfazed by controversy, Nazir’s media contributions are informative, incisive and underpinned by his respect for each and every human being. “Every name on every piece of paper in every case is a person,” he says. “Some professionals need reminding.” Now, in his quest to tackle injustices and racism, Nazir has penned The Prosecutor, a riveting insight into our justice system and his own pursuit of truth. He states, “I’m sharing the voices of victims and survivors who’ve rarely been heard. The truth may scare people. The truth may not improve things today, but ultimately it will do so.” The book The Prosecutor’s initial draft explored Nazir’s 13 most noteworthy cases and advised on entering the profession. This dry approach revealed little of his empathy and communication skills, so Nazir backtracked. Delving into his first 20 years, his disclosures pinpoint an understanding of and support for the underdog, in particular violated women and sexually exploited children. Early years Brummie-born Nazir, 57, an ‘outsider’ and son of immigrant Peshawar parents experienced racism. At eight, he saw death at first-hand. A cousin his age had dehydrated. She died in his arms on the grueling three and a half-week bus trip overland from his brother’s wedding in Pakistan. He reflects, “Nowadays, a couple of tablets would’ve saved her.”
By Fay Wertheimer | Photography Julian Kronfli
The family also lost a cousin to the IRA during Mr. Afzal senior’s army catering years in Ulster. Then, in February 2019, Nazir’s nephew was murdered in Birmingham. Nazir wrote, “I’ve prosecuted hundreds of killings, but nothing could prepare me for one of my family being stabbed to death.” Education and career The first of six siblings to attend school, Nazir graduated in law from the University of Birmingham, qualified as a solicitor and, in 1991, as a prosecutor, moved to London. Fearless, ambitious for professional not material success, this father of four admits his low boredom threshold, even early on, had him overreach himself. He’d opt for challenging cases others rejected, and often win them. Prosecutions ranged from Princess Diana’s stalker and the 90s ‘gay slayer’ to celebrities and the quirky couple whose copulation in a railway carriage caused passengers less concern than their post-coital ‘lighting up’ in the no-smoking carriage! The latter case resulted in a Victoria Wood sketch and global confirmation of our national eccentricity! Impact and efficiency In 2001, aged 39, Nazir became London’s first Muslim assistant chief crown prosecutor (CCP). Additional to the taxing ‘day job’, he was pivotal in introducing 2006’s anti-football violence and anti-racism legislation. In 2008, four years after victims had first sought his help, Nazir, now the CPS lead on honour-based violence, helped enact the world’s first protection orders on forced marriage and honour-based violence.
Mover ‘n’ shaker up north In 2011, North West CCP Nazir re-opened the Rochdale grooming gangs’ investigation, previously closed for fear, perhaps, of appearing racist. Setting a precedent, this case spawned an awareness of UK child sex exploitation hitherto under wraps. Up here, amidst his myriad of trials, Nazir oversaw the Stepping Hill Hospital poisonings, the convictions of policewomen’s killer Dale Cregan, Chetham's School of Music’s sex abuser head Michael Brewer and the acquittal of householders who’d killed burglars. Managing 800 lawyers and paralegals plus responsibility for 100,000 prosecutions annually was all-encompassing. After 25 stellar years at the forefront of the law, this knowledgeable and free spirit, constrained by bureaucracy, needed fresh challenges, and more family time. So, in 2015, Nazir quit the CPS. He comments: “Law is a tool for something better in this world but not the be all and end all. Every prosecution’s a failure as someone’s been harmed. I’d rather stop it happening in the first place. Nowadays, I can do and say and go where I want and still be effective.” What followed? Chief executive of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners from 2016, Nazir left the week of Manchester’s Arena bomb in May 2017. Prevented from offering national and international media outlets his professional and personal insider knowledge on the tragedy, he cut free. He states, “To make a difference, you must behave differently and engage the public, not exclude them.’’ Natural freelancer Still breaking boundaries, Nazir is two years into a three-year contract as the Welsh Government’s National Advisor on genderbased violence, the Chair of Rochdale’s Hopwood Hall College and an Independent Press Standards Committee member. Funded by the British Government International Development Department, his monthly consultations with the Pakistani Government on law reform will affect 200 million people. And should you require his services, however small, just ask! Nazir believes,
“If you don’t protect all minorities’ rights, all our rights are under attack. Hatred is learned behaviour. Diversity is not about colour but differing views, which, via education, bring us to a better place.” Five years after leaving the CPS, Nazir remains a vocal and active force for change and good for those less able to deliver the messages. The Prosecutor explains it all. The Prosecutor, Ebury Publishing (Penguin Books). Available from Waterstones & Amazon, £16.99.

PegasusLife welcomes you to Chapelwood When PegasusLife (now part of Lifestory) was launched in 2012, it was with a desire to transform retirement living into an aspirational and attractive proposition tailored to a new generation of retirees
Fast forward eight years and welcome to Chapelwood, located in the heart of Wilmslow. Designed by architect Glenn Howells Associates, the 57 one, two and three-bedroom apartments have a stylish and contemporary feel, complete with an open-plan layout that allows natural light to spread through the rooms. It’s not what we usually think of when we think about retirement living but these apartments are complete with the sort of facilities that put you in mind of a luxury hotel. This is five-star retirement living. As with all PegasusLife developments, Chapelwood alludes quality, style and elegance. The ground floor is the social hub, where owners can take advantage of all that’s on offer. Start the day with a dip in the pool at the wellness spa or for a more relaxing experience, there’s the herbal sauna and treatment rooms. The general manager will be happy to help you arrange a treatment, which includes a weekly nail bar. Amongst all the classes on offer, Thai chi has become very popular whilst regular coffee mornings are great for catching up with your neighbours.
Entertaining friends and family when they come to visit is a breeze when you have an on-site restaurant to pop to and a welcoming owners’ lounge in which to enjoy a drink – there’s even a guest suite for them to stay in.

Perhaps one of the biggest attractions of Chapelwood – if you can bear to tear yourself away from the whirl of socialising with newfound friends, relaxing in the spa or enjoying an afternoon coffee and treat with a book in the restaurant – is the location itself.

Richard Haworth Limited If you travel across the UK for business or pleasure, it's odds-on Richard Haworth has supplied the luxury bed, bathroom and table linens to your five-star hotel, your B&B, your country pile, your favourite restaurant or spa
By Fay Wertheimer | Photography Julian Kronfli
Globally respected, this company was formed as a cotton-spinning and manufacturing firm in 1876. It has operated since the 1980s from Kearsley Mill – a magnificent, Edwardian Grade II listed building, comprising five storeys, each the size of a football pitch. Richard Haworth was acquired by the Ruia Group and expanded from retail household linens to wholesale hospitality textiles. Almost 40 years on, this firm boasts a clientele that includes The Gleneagles Hotel, P&O Cruises, Center Parcs, The Goring Hotel, Designers Guild, Radisson Edwardian, Gordon Ramsay and even Royal palaces. And now you too can enjoy the Richard Haworth experience online; its extensive ranges are a mere click away. Everything from personalised bathrobes, towels and slippers, sheets hemmed on-site, bed
runners, pillowcases and duvets, to sets of napkins and table coverings… you are privy to the best. In fact, hotel guests, delighted by their improved night’s sleep, are known to trace and contact the company when they arrive back home. It is in this quest for perfection that Richard Haworth’s team of experts tests products for durability, absorbency, quality, touch and stitching. So, rest assured, your requirements – whether grandiose or small – will receive the same attention as any last-minute order for ten thousand items requiring overnight delivery. It is rare and uplifting to see the legacy of Lancashire’s textile tradition in action today. Though goods are manufactured by carefully sourced, ethical companies in the Far East, they are often finished off here. Kearsley Mill’s 240,000-square-feet expanse ensures that stock, once approved, is immediately available. Last year,
Richard Haworth Limited shipped over 10 million pieces to the UK and worldwide. Yes, the Ruia Group, of SOCKSHOP and Glenmuir Golf apparel fame, does nothing by halves. Raj Ruia, Richard Haworth Managing Director, says: “Very few people realise the hi-tech laundries that hire out our hotel linens are key to the hospitality trade. Every room needs between three to five sets of bedclothes on the go. There’s one on the bed, one in the cupboard and one in the wash. Linens are subjected to strong chemical detergents and high-temperature presses. Towels must retain their absorbency and fresh appearance after each drying. Duvet covers must be easy for chambermaids to change. And to avoid staining, tableware must be made from synthetics – as long as they feel like cotton! We work alongside these laundries to supply hotels and spas. We look forward to serving you too.”

Faye’s Clean Break We meet the busy mum-of-three who turned her talent for multitasking into an award-winning housekeeping and cleaning business in Altrincham… Bright and Beautiful (B&B) Altrincham is about to celebrate its 10th birthday. Owner Faye Roddy is over the moon. Rapid growth and clients (including some top-secret celebrities) who can’t believe how they ever lived without its discreet and dynamic services; life for B&B is looking, like the homes it cleans, very bright indeed! Schooled in multitasking 14 years ago, Faye was a single mum-of-two working at a local school. Across each day, she wore a multitude of hats… breakfast club manager, after-school manager, nursery nurse, play group leader and teaching assistant. “It was a standing joke amongst all the mums,” laughs Faye, “that I could always be spotted legging it up and down the corridor, switching my clothes to suit the next ‘role’!” One of those mums watching, disillusioned with local services on offer, had decided to open her own cleaning company and, impressed with Faye’s dynamism and work ethic, invited her onboard. Initially, Faye worked part-time, but soon gave up her work in education to dedicate herself full time to B&B. By 2010, the business was ready to expand and become a franchise. “I got a loan,” says Faye, “and decided to buy the very first franchise and become a brand ambassador. Some might say it was a risk, but I believed in B&B one million per cent and I still do!”

A sparkling success Fast forward to 2020 and there are now 67 franchises dotted around the UK. What is the secret to its success? “Trust,” says Faye without hesitation, “your home is so precious, perhaps your most expensive asset, so it scares me when I see people inviting just anyone in to clean, with very little assurance as to their credentials! Trust is everything. All our team members are carefully selected, DBS-checked and professionally trained. Peace of mind for our clients is guaranteed.” All client keys are kept secure in a safe (without name or address information attached, just a code) and absolute discretion and impeccable manners come as standard: “From parking without waking up the neighbours and entering a property respectfully and quietly, to never ever shouting about our high-profile clients on social media – everything is about doing what we do quickly to the highest standard and ensuring homes are left safe, secure and super-clean.” Think 40 team members spending 800 cleaning hours looking after 290 houses a week. That’s efficiency!
By Lisa Symonds
A bespoke approach The services offered by B&B are tailored to each home’s housekeeping needs and budget and cover cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing. “Lots of cleaning companies offer overthe-phone quotes based on the number of rooms in a house,” says Faye. “We’re the opposite. We visit to see what work needs doing and how often. A young professional who works away a lot will not require the same cleaning as a family of four who live in the same size house.”
Indeed, B&B will only ever offer clients the services they really need. “Not every house needs a top-to-bottom clean every week!” adds Faye. Eco & animal friendly Since its inception, B&B has been an eco-friendly business. The teams have always used 100% non-toxic products, refuse to use one-time-only plastics and will even do a client’s recycling for them. Even the team structure is shaped to care for planet earth: “They always work in teams of three,” explains Faye. “Not only is looking after our workers of paramount importance – it’s much harder on the body cleaning a house by yourself and working as a team never places anyone in a position of risk – transport-wise, teamwork reduces B&B’s carbon footprint.” Furthermore, the teams get the seal of approval from pets too: “It seems like madness,” smiles Faye, “but at interview stage, we always ask applicants if they like pets! More than 50% of households have them and they’re like extended members of the family. We can’t employ anyone who is scared of them or who can’t take on the responsibility of, for example, ensuring indoor cats don’t escape or giving the family dog a cuddle!” Addressing preconceptions Faye believes there are still a few stubborn preconceptions surrounding ‘getting a cleaner in’, but things are changing: “Some people don’t like to admit they have a cleaner. They don’t want to be seen as not be able to ‘do it all’. The younger generation – especially women – actively push for help, and why not? Lives are so busy now, who wants to spend their spare time cleaning or arguing over hoovering? One testimonial actually said, ‘you might just have saved my relationship!’”
People wrongly assume it’s a costly affair too: “Depending on what you have done,” reveals Faye, “it really can just be the same cost as a family meal out and its rare for us to not be able to work within someone’s modest budget.” Glowing reviews The B&B Altrincham franchise is growing fast; as B&B’s first multi-territory franchise, it now covers Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Prestbury. Reviews on social media positively shine. In 2016, Faye was nominated for the British Franchise Association’s Female Franchisee of the Year. She came an illustrious second out of thousands of entries. In 2018, Altrincham was named B&B Franchise of the Year. Modestly, she says she couldn’t do it without her teams (“they work like Trojans”) and her Quality Training Supervisor, Dawn, who has been with her nearly 10 years (“she’s my right-hand woman”), and explains how her five-year plan is to employ as many people as possible and increase her B&B client base. Just say NO to ironing For Faye, running a business offers a better quality of life with her police sergeant husband and three children (aged between three and 19). “It’s a very busy household,” she smiles. “The one chore I hate? Ironing! So, yes, I do send it to the office to get done! “You see, that’s what getting in B&B does… it buys you back time! It takes the pressure off and lets you enjoy your life. And you won’t find anyone else who can do it like we do it!”

STYLE Shine on Harvest Moon By Catherine Saunders. Read more at www.ladymuck.style I’m not happy. Not happy at all. Nor is my sore throat, my runny nose or my aching limbs. And the worst part? It’s entirely my own fault. As you know, I’m always on the lookout for new ways to give my plants a head-start, so when I heard Auntie Josie, one of my dotty, green-fingered relatives, singing the praises of Moon planting at a family get together last month, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, to survive said family get-together, I was also rather inebriated and, in hindsight, didn’t actually listen as attentively as perhaps I ought. Instead, I weaved my way home that night, marvelling at the Moon above and drunkenly deciding that if I wanted a bumper crop this year, I needed to start gardening at night; I would sow carrots and spuds under the Waning Moon… sprouts and broad beans under the Waxing Moon… and a bit of nocturnal pruning under the New Moon. So, last weekend, I set my alarm for midnight, crept out of bed, gathered together everything I needed from the greenhouse and headed to the kitchen garden. There, under the Full Moon, in
sub-zero temperatures, I weeded the raised beds, hoed in some compost, raked it flat and lovingly sowed beetroots, parsnips and swedes. I also got soaking wet, chilled to the bone and far grumpier than when I last ran out of gin. And here I am, five days later, tucked up in bed, tissues strewn around, a Rudolph nose and a bell to summon Lord Muck whenever I need him, the lucky boy. I’ve also had chance to read up on Moon planting and it most definitely isn’t anything to do with gardening at night. In ancient times, it was noticed that different plants grow better when they’re planted during different phases of the Moon. The lunar cycle has a major influence on water on Earth, with tides being the most obvious manifestation, so it follows then that the phase of the Moon would impact the way plants grow on our planet through the rising and falling of the moisture levels in the ground and in the plants themselves. The 29 ½ day lunar cycle is divided into four phases (Waxing Moon, Waning Moon,
New Moon and Full Moon), each lasting about seven to eight days. Moon planting devotees believe that we use different parts of plants for different purposes, so it is important to understand which part or aspect of a plant we need to nurture and the Moon’s effect on each aspect. For example, we grow tomato plants for their fruits, carrots for roots, spinach for leaves and lavender for its flowers. So, Moon planting divides plants and crops into four groups: roots (carrots, parsnips, swedes, beets, potatoes and onions); flowers (flowering herbs, such as camomile and lavender, and flowering plants); leaves (spinach, cabbages, leeks, dale and leaf herbs like mint and basil) and fruit (tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, pumpkins, beans and peas). Sowing and cultivating each of these groups is best done on particular dates within the lunar cycle. If you fancy having a go, grab yourself a copy of the 2020 Lunar Planting Calendar & Booklet for £9.95 at lunarorganics.com Right, must dash. His Lordship is trying to creep off to the pub. Now where is my bell….

The entire frontage of the hotel has been remodelled and has an opulent, new entrance. The exterior architecture now features a dramatic eight-metre high, glazed façade revealing an impressive double-height reception space. But the showpiece for me is a palatial sweeping staircase in the lobby made of white Carrara marble, which wraps around to the first floor.
The first stage of the refurbishment commenced in 2015 with the redesign of Nipa Thai, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. The Lounge Bar and The Park Room on the first floor have also undergone a soft redesign.
By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar
Also set within acres of white marble is the elegant Hyde Bar, aptly named after London’s most famous Royal Park. The bar is designed with the most discerning guests in mind, serving Champagne, cocktails, coffee and light cuisine throughout the day. The redesign of this towering, 18-storey hotel encompasses the complete refurbishment of all 411 guestrooms and suites. Every guestroom has a far-reaching view across London, and the modern design emphasises these premium vistas. Room categories start with the Classic Double Room – 20 square meters in size and priced from £219 per night. All of the guest rooms have Handy phones, hidden international plug sockets,
Having opened as one of the chicest hotels in London in 1967, Royal Lancaster London has an illustrious history; from Michael Caine being filmed there for The Italian Job to playing host to events attended by Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and countless other royals. The hotel also famously hosted the after-party for The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine film premiere. I stay here often. Why? Immaculate hotel, perfect location, spectacular views over Hyde Park and London’s skyline, delicious food, amazing cocktails and genuine, friendly guest relations. Lancaster Gate tube station is next door and a short stroll west takes you to Notting Hill and Holland Park. Walk east to Marble Arch and Oxford Street or go south through the park and find yourself in Kensington or Knightsbridge, and the rest of London is within easy reach. What’s not to like?

BEN Tell us about yourself? My career in hairdressing has spanned over 15 invigorating years. Working alongside a variety of technical expertise, I’ve honed my skills to create a bespoke experience. Have you had any jobs other than hairdressing? I worked in an insurance brokerage before becoming an apprentice at a salon. Although it gave me great organisational skills, I found myself desiring a more creative outlet, hence leading me into hairdressing. What has been your biggest achievement so far in your career? There are two that I’m particularly proud of... the external creative work of being on an artistic team, competition work and, most recently, creating a salon with great friends who share a complementary business view and creative nature. What would your advice be to any young hairdresser starting out? Create yourself as a brand, find a niche in the market to make yourself recognisable. Learn everything from every hairdresser around you, expansion of your knowledge is so vital in this industry to be able to handle all hair types. Also, don’t give up, the turbulence is only temporary.

What is on-trend for spring/ summer 2020? Looking at S/S 2020 catwalks, hair trends lend themselves to pigtail plaits... a romantic twist on a staple hair up for this coming season.
What’s your favourite part of your job? As clichéd as it sounds, it’s the happiness you give to your guest – when you’ve got their hair perfect... that’s the ultimate reward.
There was also 70s-inspired, shaggy hair..., this retro style is brought forward into modern times by ensuring hair is always kept luxurious and healthy looking, without losing that nod to the vintage era.

The European Scanning Centre The European Scanning Centre – Manchester (ESC) has been operating out of Kingsley Hall, close to Manchester Airport, since 2015 and has been designed with patient comfort at the forefront, including a warm and welcoming reception area and staff chosen for their ability to put patients at ease
The centre is best known for its Open MRI scanner, but it is also the home of the Regenerative Therapy Centre. The MRI scanning room is spacious and calming, with wall and ceiling relax-vision panels to increase the open feeling, which is important to our anxious patients. Unlike conventional MRI scanners, our Open MRI scanner is completely open in front, above and behind the patient, avoiding any sense of claustrophobia. Whilst being scanned, patients can watch television or listen to music and even have a relative or friend accompany them during the scan. Two-way audio facilities allow the radiographers to communicate and reassure patients throughout. The friendly and caring team at ESC genuinely
understand the anxiety that even the thought of an MRI scan can produce and are confident they can help their patients through the experience, in fact, some patients are so relaxed, they fall asleep! As well as the anxious or claustrophobic patient, ESC scans the larger patient who may not fit into a traditional scanner and can take patients up to 200kg. The unique ability to perform weight-bearing scans in a patient’s position of pain can show something that is not visible on a supine (lying) scan. Our Upright MRI is changing the clinical approach towards musculoskeletal imaging, particularly of the spine and joints. Imaging in the sitting or standing position helps
improve accuracy and diagnosis; by allowing a more accurate diagnosis, it is improving patient outcomes. ESC’s first-class radiographers ensure that your MRI experience is as comfortable as possible and the scan will be reported by the region's leading consultant radiologists. Our patients come from across the North West and overseas, and as well as self-pay and insured patients, we do accept referrals from the NHS with the appropriate funding in place. ESC is delighted that the Regenerative Therapy Centre has chosen to partner with it to provide interventional pain management therapies. We look forward to welcoming you to Kingsley Hall.

“Peace of mind for you and your family at all times”
The Private GP & Night Doctor Service We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Whilst the NHS is a good system, demand has increased so much that it has become almost impossible for it to offer the prompt and personal care that we all wish for. We believe our registered patients want a professional service with peace of mind at all times – from immediate telephone advice to organising an admission into hospital, anytime, day or night – all provided by a small group of doctors whom they know.
Hopefully, you will not need to see a doctor urgently, but accidents or illnesses can occur when least expected, and having to travel or wait several hours for healthcare can only make the ordeal worse. Amar Deshpande Champion of stress-free breast cancer testing and early detection
Consultant Oncoplastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Breast Surgeon Amar runs a revolutionary One-Stop Breast Clinic at Euxton Hall Hospital in Chorley.
What can a patient expect at the clinic? There will be a one-to-one consultation with me. If I think further investigation is needed/an abnormality is seen/felt, they will have an immediate mammogram and/or ultrasound. A biopsy/fine-needle aspiration will follow but only if needed. My team are superb at putting anxious patients at ease. Our Matron Dawn Sumner is wonderful with people as is our specialist breast care nurses and imaging team.
The clinic provides all relevant assessments – consultation, mammogram/ultrasound and biopsy – in the space of three to four hours. A diagnosis is made the very same day. We caught up with him to find out why his service is not only important in detecting breast cancer early but protecting a patient’s mental health too.
By Lisa Symonds | Photography Julian Kronfli
Tell us a little more about your role? I’ve been a breast surgeon for over ten years. As well as working for Euxton Hall Hospital – which is part of Ramsay Health Care – I also work at an NHS hospital (Wigan Infirmary). I specialise in breast reconstruction for cancer patients. I also provide cosmetic breast surgery i.e. breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy and lipomodelling. Very few private hospitals offer the kind of one-stop service you do. Why were you so passionate about starting it? Finding a lump/changes can be extremely scary for a patient and the wait between testing and receiving results can undoubtedly be one of their biggest anxieties. I launched the clinic, not only to deliver swift diagnoses, but to eradicate weeks of worry. Worry which is often unnecessary, e.g. not all lumps turn out to be cancerous. And, if a patient is diagnosed with cancer, we can start treatment immediately. Does the NHS offer anything similar? The patient pathway is the same, but it is a far longer process. If you find a lump, for example, you theoretically should be seen within two weeks, however sometimes this wait can be longer.
When should women consider coming to see you / what are the signs to look out for? A painless lump or painful lump in the breast, any changes to the skin (e.g. ulceration, creasing or dimpling) or to the nipples (e.g. discharge, especially if bloody and from only one breast). Pain in the breast is often a worry but rarely a symptom of cancer… it can be the result of anything from musculoskeletal pain to wearing an ill-fitting bra to cyclical pain! Should lower-risk under-40s attend the clinic? Breast cancer is more common in the over-40s, but never ever be complacent if you notice changes! I diagnose women with breast cancer in their 20s and 30s, young, low-risk women with no family history of the disease.
Sounds very relaxed and reassuring? The biggest fear for patients is the unknown. That’s why I like to explain everything in detail, sometimes it’s those patients who are not diagnosed with cancer who need the most detailed explanation to alleviate their anxiety. If it isn’t cancer the main discussion is around the treatment of that. I also used to offer monthly informal evening-time events at the Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan (Patient Involvement Event or PIE), to provide more time/information to non-private patients. These will restart after the current coronavirus crisis is over. How quickly could you see someone at Euxton Hall? The One-Stop Breast Clinic runs every Friday. How do women book an appointment at the clinic? There are several ways – they can get their GP to refer them, make contact via their health insurer, or give the hospital a call themselves. You will only pay for the parts of the service you end up needing e.g. just a consultation. This is a bespoke service.

BMI The Alexandra Hospital in top 7 for hip replacement surgery in the UK. The 106th Annual Report from the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man has revealed the hospitals with the ‘worst and best results’ for routine hip replacement surgery. The Alexandra Hospital, in Cheadle, is recognised as one of the best hospitals in the UK for hip replacement surgery and it is the only private hospital to appear in the listing. The ratings relate to early / short term complications such as dislocation and infection which may ultimately require revision surgery. The lower the rate of early complications, the lower the rate of hip revision surgery.
We wanted to explore why the results for hip replacement surgery at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle are so good. We asked Mr Adam Hoad-Reddick, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. He performs 48% of the total number of hip replacements in private patients at the Alexandra Hospital, which makes up over 22% of the total number of hip replacement surgeries at this centre Q. In your own words, why do you believe the Alexandra Hospital has been recognised as one of the best hospitals in the UK for hip replacement surgery? A. This recognition has come from the data collected in the National Joint Registry. This data allows follow-up of all patients’ undergoing hip replacement at hospitals within the United Kingdom. Patient data is collected relating to surgery (including the type of implants used) and whether patients have had any complications, in particular those leading to further surgery including revision. The data has shown that the Alexandra hospital is in the top 7 performing hospitals in the country and is the only private provider within this group. The data supports the fact that hip replacement surgery is carried out to a high standard at the Alexandra Hospital. Specialist hip surgeons performing hip replacement surgery in high volume centres can achieve low revision rates. Low revision rates are achieved by reducing the risk of early failure of the hip replacement due to dislocation, suboptimal implant sizing, malposition, infection or fracture. My practice accounts for over 25% of the hip replacements performed at the Alexandra Hospital. My infection rates, requirement for readmission and revision rates are well below the national average. This is achieved by meticulous attention to detail during surgery; this includes pre-operative templating to ensure optimum implant positioning and the use of recognised implants with good outcomes. It is also related to the excellent care and support provided from the wider team involved in joint replacement surgery at the Alexandra Hospital. Q. Why do you choose to practice at The Alexandra Hospital?
A. The Alexandra hospital has a long-established history in Greater Manchester and Cheshire. It is a progressive centre, soon to acquire the MAKO robot to assist with optimising alignment of joint replacement implants for improved patient outcomes. Mr Hoad-Reddick is delighted to offer this service to his patients and has already had 6 months of experience, performing over 55 operations with robotic assistance to date. Please contact the self-pay team for more information on robotic hip and knee procedure by calling 0161 495 7029 The Alexandra hospital also benefits from high dependency and intensive care units so that patients with complex medical problems can undergo surgery with appropriate levels of support in order to manage their individual needs safely. Patients with other medical conditions, for example complex cardiac issues or cardiac pacemakers, have the reassurance that the oncall medical team are on hand and have significant experience in managing these issues. We are now receiving referrals from other hospitals who are unable to manage patients with complex problems. I am confident that patients will have excellent care at the Alexandra hospital and, if complications do arise in the postoperative period, they can be optimally managed.
operative period. Many of our patients have found this helpful as it provides information and guidance through their patient journey in addition to my team who are also available to answer patient queries along the way. The planned length of stay, now, for a patient undergoing first-time hip replacement is in the region of 3 days. Pain is usually well controlled in the postoperative period and patients are discharged home from hospital once they are satisfactorily mobile (including climbing and descending stairs). Following high-quality care by the experienced team at the Alexandra hospital, patients are discharged home. In my practice, patients usually continue with crutches for 3-4 weeks. Patients can resume driving around 4 weeks post-surgery and can usually start increasing some activities from 6 weeks. There may be specific activities that are restricted beyond that time, for example I recommend delaying return to golf until around 3 months post-surgery. As a surgeon caring for patients at the Alexandra Hospital, I am happy to share my own personal National Joint Registry data with respect to complications and revision rates with my patients prior to surgery. I have added this information to my website which can be viewed at www.HRorthopaedics.co.uk.
Q. What can a patient expect when they undergo hip replacement surgery at The Alexandra Hospital? A Following discussion in clinic, I provide my patients with written information regarding joint replacement surgery. I discuss the potential risks and complications of surgery as well as outlining potential benefits. Patients are also seen by occupational therapists and physiotherapists prior to surgery. We offer patients an App called MYRECOVERY for their use in the pre and post-

Marcella’s amazing mission We meet the woman who’s harnessed her own grief to provide support for marginalised cancer patients and carers within their own community In conjunction with other agencies, the charity aims to challenge these engrained behaviours, raise awareness of risk factors and symptoms, and encourage screening programme attendance. “In some cultures, for example, women are at times restricted from attending cervical screenings,” reveals Marcella. “We are working – sensitively and respectfully – within communities to shift these engrained views.”
Change inspired by loss In 2009, Marcella Turner lost her father to prostate cancer. 18 months later, just three days after being diagnosed, her mother passed away from bowel cancer. In 2015, Marcella founded Can-Survive UK (CSUK), a charity dedicated to providing support and information to people living with or affected by cancer, in particular those marginalised or disadvantaged and disconnected from mainstream services. “I put all my grief into starting the charity,” smiles softly spoken Marcella. “Caring for my dad showed me the lack of cancer awareness within certain communities and, with both my parents being of Caribbean descent, the absence of culturally sensitive support.”
Caring for carers CSUK also offers support for carers. Marcella reflects on the three years she spent, along with other family members, caring for her beloved dad: “At times, I felt like I was going mad! I had a full-time job and a young daughter. It was a stressful situation. If there had been a group where I could offload or just cry, I’d really have welcomed that.” The charity also offer support to family members and carers providing end-of-life care to their loved ones: “We do home visits and offer practical help and information to help alleviate stress that can be caused by having to communicate with and coordinate the various health agencies and professionals.”
A sense of belonging CSUK delivers two support groups – WOW! (Women only Wednesdays) and MOT (Men only Thursdays) along with advocacy and information services in Hulme, Old Trafford, Cheetham Hill and, more recently, Harpurhey. “Everyone is welcome,” says Marcella, “it’s not about exclusion, it’s about inclusion. We focus on minority ethnic people, who tend not to engage with the mainstream cancer support agencies; who want to go somewhere close to home, where they feel they fit in and see people they can relate to culturally.”
They too can participate in activities, such as art therapy, creative writing, yoga, massages and talking therapy.
Like a family All too often, explains Marcella, service users feel uneasy talking to family or friends about certain things, so as not to worry or distress them, and vice versa. “The groups are a safe and confidential space within which they can share openly and find comfort, friendship and support,” adds Marcella. The feedback to date is overwhelmingly positive: “Service users say that it’s like a family and without it, they wouldn’t have had anywhere to go.”
Shifting views & behaviours Marcella is aware how men often struggle to speak openly (hence the MOT sessions), but is equally conscious of their refusal to seek help when symptoms first occur: “95% of our male service users have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My father’s was diagnosed when it was terminal. He was not aware of the symptoms. Many men only go to see their doctor after being encouraged to do so by a female… wife, daughter, sister.”
A lasting legacy Marcella’s long-term vision is to create support groups across the region (for “the voiceless, marginalised or deprived, be it culturally or socio-economically”). In February of this year, Forever Manchester awarded CSUK Community Group of the Year. We tell her that her parents would be incredibly proud and how brave she is to use her loss to help others. She smiles: “Winning the award is incredible. I hope my parents are proud. I want this to be their legacy… oh, but I’m not the brave one. The service users are the brave ones. I am humbled and honoured to support them.”

Access the right team, at the right .me. Pain Medicine Explained We are pleased to introduce one of our newest OrthTeam members, Dr Nick Fraser, who is a Consultant specialising in pain medicine. He has more than 12 years’ experience working in both the NHS and private sector. What is a Pain Medicine Consultant? I’m a consultant in anaesthesia and pain medicine, this means that my parent specialty is anaesthesia, but I have also completed specialist training in pain medicine and have the recognised qualifica@on: Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, which is part of the Royal College of Anaesthe@sts.
Why do we experience pain? Pain is medically defined as "an unpleasant sensory and emo@onal experience associated with actual or poten@al @ssue damage, or described in terms of such damage". It is very common, with almost a third of the popula@on experiencing daily pain that interferes with their lives. For most people, this is due to changes in our bodies as we age, but for others it can be caused by arthri@s, trauma, illness, surgery, cancer treatment or even unknown causes. Believe it or not, we o en cannot always medically explain exactly why some people are in pain, this doesn’t mean that they are imagining it, it’s just that modern scans and tests o en come back normal, even when there is a lot of pain.
What is the best treatment for pain? There are many different types of treatments for pain, but medically it usually comes down to medica@on, surgery or some@mes targeted injec@onbased treatments to try and se+le inflamma@on, or selec@vely switch off some nerves. In addi@on, there are a variety of handson therapies including physiotherapy, psychological therapies and holis@c treatments.
To book a consulta@on or for more informa@on, please call 0161 447 6888 www.orthteamcentre.co.uk /OrthTeamCentre @OrthT
How do you work with the other OrthTeam consultants? At the OrthTeam Centre, I’m a member of a mul@ disciplinary team who work together to provide the best possible care for our pa@ents. The team of leading MSK experts includes Neurosurgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians and Radiologists. There are two Neurosurgeons, Mr John Leach and Mr Ankur Saxena, and most of my pa@ents start by seeing them, and are then referred to me with an acute (new) problem such as scia@ca due to a slipped disc where o en a targeted steroid injec@on can help whilst the condi@on se+les. What types of pa.ents do you see at the OrthTeam Centre? As well as trea@ng pa@ents with acute condi@ons like scia@ca, I also look a er those with localised lower back pain from the facet or sacroiliac joints, and these can be treated with targeted radiofrequency therapy to the affected joints. I have become very experienced at these interven@ons, and I can usually quickly work out if they will be successful when I assess pa@ents in clinic. They are rela@vely simple and effec@ve treatments, however they don’t work as well in very advanced degenera@ve condi@ons. OrthTeam is commi+ed to protec@ng the health of our pa@ents and staff at the OrthTeam Centre. In light of the Coronavirus outbreak, our consultants will be offering remote telephone or video appointments. If you would like to arrange a telephone or video consulta@on, either as a new or followup appointment, please phone 0161 447 6888 or visit www.orthteamcentre.co.uk

“CNM has completely changed my life… the lecturers were extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of nutrition and wellbeing” What attracted me to CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine) was its flexibility around lectures, its proximity to where I live and the fact that my uncle used to be a lecturer. I especially loved the people I met at CNM. I made so many great similar-minded friends and the lecturers were extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of nutrition and wellbeing. If I had to use three words to describe CNM, they would be educational, flexible and fun. CNM has completely changed my life; I feel like I’m now fulfilling my purpose in life. I was medically diagnosed with psoriasis after the birth of my first child in 2011. At first, the recommended steroid creams seemed to work but soon my skin got used to these and I needed more to get any relief. Eventually, their effect stopped working altogether and I was just getting worse and worse. I was variously recommended light therapy, oat baths and other mainstream creams but nothing about nutrition. Seeing no improvement and increasingly disheartened, I decided to change my diet and lifestyle, to see if these changes helped. I had always been brought up to look at the body holistically as my grandmother was a homeopath, so it made sense to try a whole lifestyle approach.
In 2015, I discovered a book called Healing Psoriasis by Dr Pagano, in which he explains his techniques in using diet and lifestyle interventions to heal psoriasis. I strictly followed his protocol from June to October 2015. My skin completely cleared after four months! Prior to this, I was around 50% covered. I still get some spots if I’ve not been taking care of myself, but as soon as I implement nutrition and lifestyle measures, it’s fairly instant, I clear up again. Now I support my psoriasis using only natural therapies. I have a degree in human biology and psychology and an inquisitive nature, so I wanted to learn why my body had responded like this, which is why I studied nutrition at CNM. Now I have qualified, I
hope to be able to help others in similar situations. I am still working as a secretary part-time whilst I am building up my own business, specialising in helping people with psoriasis and skin conditions. I love sharing the knowledge of everything I have learnt with others and, even better, watching them improve with my help. To anyone who is thinking of studying at CNM, relish every minute of the studying, I miss it now it’s gone. Emma Gould, CNM Naturopathic Nutrition graduate

Northern chef hits the ground running with private catering functions For those who love the idea of a dinner party but don’t know where to start when it comes to creating a menu with a real wow factor, the perfect solution may have just presented itself After several years working in London, Northern chef Laurie Curtis has moved up to Manchester and has ambitions to make his mark on the region’s dining scene, speciďŹ cally in private dining.

April/May 2020 | salutions.co.uk
His move follows several years working as senior chef at The Admirable Crichton, where he led a culinary team at events at the likes of Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, St James’s Palace and Westminster Abbey. His influences are taken from an eclectic range of cultures and cuisines, with specialisms in British, European, Mediterranean and classical French. Now living in Didsbury, Laurie hosts monthly tasting menus in the local area and has plans to increase this to weekly in the coming months. Laurie creates seasonal five-course tasting menus, starting from £65 a head. Dishes on the current menu include: •
Green eggs and ham – slow-cooked egg yolk, asparagus mousse, mushrooms, ibérico ham & brioche soldiers
•
North Sea halibut – mussels cooked in tuna nduja, seaweed pasta, sea vegetables & cucumber
•
Yorkshire goats curd tart – poached rhubarb, clotted cream ice cream & ruby chocolate
In addition to his tasting menus, Laurie also offers private dining services at people’s homes – creating exciting dishes
using modern techniques, delicately balanced with traditional cooking at their core. Ranging from special occasions and work functions to dinner parties and everything in between, Laurie creates a bespoke menu to suit the event, ensuring all allergens and dietary requirements are taken into consideration. Laurie can cater for any number of people – be it a wedding anniversary meal for two, birthday catering for 10, or a larger party of 20 upwards. And whether it’s a formal or informal menu, Laurie believes the market for private dining in Greater Manchester is picking up. “When moving up to Manchester, I did consider opening a restaurant,” says Laurie, “but I believe there is a lot of untapped potential in offering private dining and I’ve been really pleased with the take-up so far. People like being able to experience fine dining in their own home and offering the flexibility to work with them to tailor a menu according their tastes is a real benefit for them. “I’ve been watching the food and beverage scene evolve at an exciting pace in Manchester in recent years and felt the time was right to come up and carve out a niche for myself. It’s been a great start so far and I’m looking forward to building a name for myself and boosting the private dining scene across the region this year.”
When creating a menu, Laurie provides the host with numerous dishes to choose from, including canapés, starters, mains and desserts. The host is asked to choose one dish per course for the whole party (vegetarians and those with allergies can choose separately) and two canapés. A majority of the preparation is done in advance, with the option of Laurie bringing his own plates and cutlery or using those belonging to the host*. Laurie can also bring waiting on staff and the clearing up will be done by his team, leaving the host and their guests to enjoy the occasion. Laurie continues: “I’ve found people like the idea of experiencing fine dining without having to leave the comfort of their own home. I can work with the hosts to pull together a wine list that works perfectly with the menu or I can advise on wines which they can source themselves. The real advantage of private dining is that it truly is a bespoke experience at each and every event, with every detail tailored with that particular party in mind. “I don’t want people to think that private dining is always a formal affair. At the end of the day, it’s all about what suits the occasion and I’ve worked with numerous hosts to create a more informal menu. Ultimately, I’m there so that everyone can relax and have a good time without having to come up with the recipes, source the food or cook!”

5 places to eat
The team at Salutions HQ have been out and about, sourcing the best places to eat and drink. Well, someone has to do it! Here’s our shortlist…
Döner haus / MAnChester
Following its huge success in Glasgow, Döner Haus has now landed at the Corn Exchange – lucky Mancunians! What makes this place is the quality; lean meat content is much higher than in a traditional kebab. Our Berlin Döner was made with lean cuts of beef and turkey breast to keep the meat juicy, and our chicken shawarma, made with tender chicken leg and thigh, was moist and delicious. 0161 834 8312
rosa’s Thai Cafe / MAnChester
Rosa’s Thai Cafe arrived in Manchester at The Old Courthouse on Deansgate in late February, offering a variety of vibrant dishes using seasonal ingredients. We loved their best-selling pad Thai, signature red butternut curry with sweet basil and drunken noodles with galangal. The restaurant uses the best in fresh British produce alongside traditional Thai ingredients, including coconut milk, jasmine rice and tamarind paste, which are sourced directly from farmers in Thailand. What’s not to love? 0161 464 3197
The ivy Asia / MAnChester
We visited the swanky establishment on the second floor of The Ivy Spinningfields for an evening of glamour, Asian-inspired cocktails and a selection of small sharing dishes. We particularly enjoyed the wagyu beef with truffle sauce and sides of steamed broccoli with chilli and a papaya and cashew salad. Our favourite? The blackened cod is simply divine. The Ivy Asia also celebrates seasonal events, such as the recent Chinese New Year and the upcoming Sakura Season (cherry blossom season) with bespoke food, drink and entertainment. This is the place to be. 0161 503 3222
Croma / DiDsbury
Following Croma’s recent 20th birthday, we visited the Didsbury hotspot for an authentic Italian experience. Melanzane parmigiana and slices of roasted aubergine baked with cheeses and tomato started us off perfectly. The Parma (cured ham, olives, tomato and mozzarella) and Anatra (Peking duck, cucumber, spring onions and plum hoisin sauce) were the tasty pizzas of choice – and what great choices they were! Hot sticky toffee pudding and Croma’s twist on Eton mess, banoffee mess, were an indulgent end to the meal. You will certainly want a pizza this menu. 0161 445 6944 54

Les Deux / ALDerLey eDge
We visited the pizza bar with the little pink door on London Road for a hump day treat. With a selection of both classic and quirky pizzas, our favourite had to be their sticky beef and truffle oil ‘OH ELLOOOOOO’ pizza – a delicious topping combo. To start, they also offer a selection of sharing burratas, perfect for gooey cheese lovers. We devoured pesto-injected Pretty Green Eyes with courgette tempura to dip. Pizza and cocktails pair perfectly at this playful and vibrant addition to Alderley Edge. 01625 586263

Any home cooking tips for readers? Don’t be afraid to try new things. Experiment with spices, flavours and new ingredients. It’s easy to make the same dishes week in week out, because you don’t need to give it any extra thought. Step out of your comfort zone. Also don’t be fooled by the price tag – just because something is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily any better to taste. Sometimes, people are put off by the cost of ingredients to avoid trying something new, but the possibility is always there. What advice would you give to young women looking to get into a career in catering? Learn as much as you can from anyone willing to help you. Not just from management but every level available. Kitchen porters, chefs, operational teams and managing directors... each person will have something valuable to offer you. Don’t stick to just one style of cuisine; ensure your skill set is diverse, so that you don’t lose potential opportunities. What’s the most challenging thing about your job? Allergens, dietaries and ‘fad’ diets. As much as some guests have very serious allergies that need to be accommodated, the struggle tends to be associated with the trends that are circulating at any one time. Diet plans, cutting out certain foods or just trying veganism for a month – these sometimes-temporary choices do have a huge effect on service. I feel it’s going to restrict a lot of chefs in what they can put on their menus; to ensure every individual requirement for an event is covered.
Dr Anya Leaver is a Private GP at Spire Manchester Hospital and their clinic in Hale, where fast-access, flexible appointments are available throughout the week. How do I know if I’m suffering from anxiety or depression? Anxiety and depression can affect anyone at any time and they commonly coexist. Anxiety is a normal human emotion, it’s not unusual to experience anxiety before a big event or important decision. Anxiety becomes an illness when you worry so much that it interferes with your life. You can't stop worrying even though you try, you worry over lots of different things. Your worry is out of proportion and it can lead to irrational thoughts and fears. Physical symptoms caused by generalised anxiety disorder can include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension and a racing heart. It's normal to be sad from time to time, but depression is more than feeling unhappy sometimes. The symptoms of depression can be complex and variable between people. Your low mood lasts much longer and affects other parts of your life, such as your sleep, relationships, job and appetite. You may feel hopeless and lose interest in activities that you used to enjoy and feel like you can't cope with everyday life. It's not something you can just snap out of. When should I seek help and what are the treatment options? You should see a GP if you experience symptoms of depression or anxiety on a regular basis for more than two weeks. Treatments for depression and anxiety can work well; improving your symptoms and helping you feel more like yourself again. If you have moderate or severe symptoms, antidepressant medication or/and talking therapies (psychotherapies e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy) may be recommended. Each individual’s needs are different, so it’s important to seek professional help, where an expert diagnosis can be made.
Mr. Amar Deshpande, Consultant Oncoplastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Breast Surgeon, provides outstanding standards of care at Euxton Hall Hospital Lancashire. He provides services such as the highly successful One Stop Assessment. What is a One Stop Breast Clinic? Breast problems can cause anxiety. Patients experiencing breast symptoms are assessed by following the principles of triple assessment. The triple assessment is done in three stages – clinical examination followed by ultrasound scan and/or mammogram and biopsy, if needed. In the One Stop Breast Clinic, all the elements of the triple assessment are performed at the time of the first consultation. What should I expect from the clinic? The time required for the assessment is two to three hours. A detailed history would be taken and an examination would be performed. You would then be referred for a mammogram (usually for those over 40 years of age) and/or ultrasound scan, and biopsy/fineneedle aspiration, if needed. In most cases, on the day of the appointment, you would be given the diagnosis. For those who need a biopsy, a further appointment would be made to discuss the results and make further decisions. Do I need a GP letter to attend the clinic? It is helpful to have a GP letter, so as to inform us of your medical history, however, it is not strictly necessary.

Lily Shippen – the celebs’ choice for discreet staff Meet the recruiter who can identify unique and talented PAs whose mission it is to guard privacy with their life So multi-tasking is an essential requirement,” says Gillian. “I work under pressure and pride myself on accuracy. For that reason, the role has grown with me. I’ve earned the trust of my employers, resulting in me having more responsibility and a higher salary. “Discretion is a huge part of the job. I have access to private finances and emails. I know her feelings on certain subjects. I’m a confidante and an employee and she knows I would never break that trust. I have immense work satisfaction because I can see the amazing work that she achieves and the part I have played in that by taking off pressure in other areas.”
Lily Shippen Psst! Can you keep a secret? For a private personal assistant (PA) it is a non-negotiable quality, which may seem obvious, but a breach often means instant dismissal.
LS Private recently placed a male PA with a pair of famous authors and is noticing a rise in demand for the ultra-discreet employee.
But when VIPs need a right-hand man or woman, they’re increasingly turning to Manchester-based PA and secretarial recruitment expert Lily Shippen.
“In Cheshire and London, in particular, top CEOs, celebrities and VIPs are dependent on a personal assistant who they can trust implicitly,” says Lily. “Usually the staff member is required to sign a non-disclosure agreement and there’s often travel involved. It’s fantastic work for the right person.”
Lily, whose business has scooped several awards, has just recruited a private PA for a celebrated British artist and stresses that discretion is one of the most important aspects of the job. And for good reason. She says:
“Private PAs often know more about a person, their company, their business and their life than any other employee. Maybe even more than their partners and that’s a huge responsibility to take on, which is why our candidates are heavily vetted.”
For anyone interested in employing a private PA from the UK or abroad, or for anyone seeking employment of this type, contact Lily or Emma at manchester@lilyshippen.co.uk / 0161 711 0767 or follow them on Twitter (@LilyShippen), Instagram (@lilyshippensecretarial) or LinkedIn (linkedin.com/in/lilyshippen). Gill Aitken
PAs don’t need any specific qualifications but are required to be flexible, hard-working and incredibly organised at all times. Wilmslow-based Gillian Aitken is private PA to renowned oncologist Professor Pat Price and her family. She is responsible for all the professor’s needs – from completing tax returns and checking her bank balance to finding a reliable tradesman to maintain the upkeep of the house. “My employer is so busy that she doesn’t really have time for the day-to-day things.
Lily offers a special guarantee to employers that if they’re not happy with an employee after six months, she will replace them free of charge. April/May 2020 | salutions.co.uk

Clair Smith
Dr Simon Campbell
Lily is an entrepreneur who, at just 27, has won several awards for her company, Lily Shippen. She also owns LS Virtual, who provide Remote Executive Assistants to businesses and individuals.
Clair Smith is a HR Manager at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa. She has worked in HR for 10 years, specialising in the hospitality industry, and has recently obtained a mental health first aider qualification.
BMI Hospital’s Dr Simon Campbell, an accredited national bowel cancer screening colonoscopist, highlights the importance of screening and surveillance for bowel cancer.
What is a new trend in recruitment? With advancing technology and increasing office space costs, many companies and business owners are looking to hire more virtual-based staff for their businesses. Equally, with more professionals seeking flexible working and the ability to work from home, it’s a win-win situation.
What is a mental health first aider? I’m a point of contact for any team member who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. I’ve been trained to spot the early signs and symptoms of mental ill health and start a supportive conversation and encourage the team member to access professional support or self-help strategies.
What are the risks of developing bowel cancer? In the UK, one in 15 men and one in 18 women will develop bowel cancer, making it the third most common cancer in the UK. Risk factors include family history, smoking, obesity, excess alcohol intake and advancing age. More than 90% of people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over 50.
How do you qualify for this? It was a two-day Mental Health First Aid England course, which included a mix of presentations, discussions and group work activities. I will take an MHFA refresher course every three years to ensure I update my knowledge and skills.
What is the difference between screening and surveillance? Screening is the method by which we take patients who have no symptoms but who may be at higher risk of developing bowel cancer. This can take two forms – testing for microscopic blood in faeces or performing a telescope test of the bowel (colonoscopy). Surveillance is whereby patients with a history of polyps have regular colonoscopy tests (one to five yearly).
So, is your company part of the virtual revolution? Yes, LS Virtual was launched in February and provides around-the-clock support to busy professionals, private individuals and businesses who require support in the evenings and weekends as well as during the working week. We use cutting-edge technology that allows our in-house team of virtual executive assistants to work collaboratively from wherever they are in the world. How can businesses adapt to working virtually? For a business to adapt to virtual working, a fundamental part of it being successful is its ability to embrace technology. The advanced world of technology has provided a solid platform to allow businesses to operate effectively with their workforce being remote. A change of mindset to push the boundaries and welcome the new norm is critical. Business leaders should be at the forefront leading these changes and taking ownership of their own learning and development, particularly around new technologies. Businesses could use collaboration tools such as Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams and Zoom to name a few. LS Virtual have adopted all of the above and this is why we pride ourselves as being seen as one of the growing leaders in the virtual world of business support.
What are the benefits of having a mental health first aider in the workplace? Mental health has become very prevalent within the workplace and we treat mental health with the same importance and sense of urgency as we do with any physical illness. It has helped to remove the stigma around talking about the subject and ultimately, it means we can support and help someone to get the help they need much sooner.
Why is surveillance and screening important? We know that bowel cancer is very treatable and potentially curable if caught early. Screening can be performed at any age, but the benefits are really shown in patients age 50 or over. The rate of bowel cancer in younger patients has increased more rapidly than expected, so a colonoscopy may be recommended in patients with family history or symptoms (change in bowel habit, bleeding from the back passage etc.).

Stockport Grammar eco-committee delivers Downing Street petition Whilst the pupils were in the capital, they spent the day exploring a variety of sustainability-themed attractions, including the Royal Academy of Arts, where they saw the Eco-Visionaries exhibition, and the London Aquarium, where the children could read more about the conservation and protection of marine wildlife. Speaking about the trip, Lower Sixth student Rabeeah-Nuur Mohammed said: “Visiting the Eco-Visionaries exhibition at the Royal Academy was an eye-opening experience that very effectively showcased the consequences and imminent dangers of the climate crisis.
Eighteen Eco-Committee members from Stockport Grammar’s Junior and Senior schools travelled to 10 Downing Street to hand over a petition focused on reducing carbon emissions. The petition has amassed over 800 signatures and urges the Government to adopt emission reducing ideas, including more tree planting. The Eco-committee hopes to have a response from the Government in the next few months.
“My highlight was being able to hand in our petition to 10 Downing Street, an opportunity I will always be grateful for and cherish for the rest of my life.” Junior School teacher Miss Sarah Knowles added: “The passion and enthusiasm of the children was evident and it brought children from all ages together, exposing them to many ideas which we will continue to discuss over the next few months – providing a focus for the school to help towards gaining our Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.”
TV’s John Thomson is ChEd Talk Special Guest Laughter and life lessons were shared when TV personality John Thomson spoke to the Cheadle Hulme School community at the Head’s second ChEd Talk. The Fast Show and Cold Feet actor discussed his past, present and future, giving a candid insight into his life as a comedian, actor and writer. He spoke of his love of magic as a child growing up and his foray into comedy by becoming part of Manchester’s comedy circuit, performing at Chorlton’s Buzz Club with fellow impressionists Caroline Aherne and Paul Whitehouse. John told how he bonded with Steve Coogan over impersonations at Manchester Polytechnic’s Didsbury campus before the pair won the ‘92 Edinburgh Comedy Award with their observational impersonations. Students and parents also heard about the challenges many actors face across the international stage. John said,“I know how precarious acting is, there are only 5% of actors working at any time… I thank the universe daily for the fact I do a job I love.”
The school’s ChEd Talks is a series of intimate discussions across a variety of topics lead by Head, Mr Neil Smith, to inspire and provoke thought, debate and positive conversation.

Ashby School Ashby School celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2018. The school's origins can be traced back to 1567, when a boys' school was ďŹ rst founded in Ashby The school's existing boarding facility, Schoolhouse, is directly descended from the original boys' school. Since the 16th century, the school has maintained its long and proud tradition of delivering academic excellence and outstanding opportunities for its students. In recent years, school facilities have been extensively modernised and extended to create a contemporary and well-equipped learning environment in which students continue to ourish.
We encourage our pupils to adopt a genuinely intellectual approach to their academic work and to their view of the world around them, in the knowledge that an Ashby education is only the beginning of an exciting and life-long journey of learning. We aim for our pupils to become truly independent, as those who can think, learn and cope independently will be the leaders and game changers of the future.
Ashby School is a school like no other. Where many focus on examination results and view league table position as the main criterion for success, the whole ethos of Ashby School is focused on each and every individual who passes through our doors. Our educational philosophy is focused around the traits which we want all Schoolhouse residents to acquire before taking their place in the adult world. We want our students to be inspired by everything they do at Ashby School, both inside and outside of the classroom, so they leave school as interested and interesting people.

Stella Maris School’s Norah Johnson gives her advice on achieving examination success The 11+ entrance exam process can be a challenging time for both children and parents. There are many aspects to this process. It is not only about adequate preparation or exam practice. These factors are important but are not the only tools in the complex science of passing exams Parents need to focus on what works best for their child, as children work differently and learn in a variety of ways. Parents need to ensure they are preparing their child in a way which works best for them. At Stella Maris School, preparation for grammar school exams is integrated into our curriculum. The ability to pass an exam is not just determined by the amount of knowledge a child manages to retain and release at the appropriate time.
Parents need to plan ahead and decide what they want for their children early on in a child’s school career. Good preparation carried out well in advance will ensure that your child can acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence needed in order to succeed in the 11+ exams. This will also make the process much less challenging and an enjoyable experience for your child.
It is a skill set which is built on, year on year. It is about being able to believe in one’s own ability and approach an exam with a balanced sense of proportion and confidence. These are skills which are taught across the whole curriculum. Success in the exams is defined by what a child can do with the knowledge they have acquired and how they can apply this knowledge. This is our children’s passport to success. The correct approach Parents need to have a measured approach towards the process of sitting entrance exams. It should be about the children showcasing what they can do with their acquired knowledge and skills. It is not about trying to pass an exam by using knowledge that has been temporarily acquired but not understood. Passing an entrance exam is exactly what it states, an entrance to the next stage of their education. Exam preparation is a slow process delivered over time in an appropriate way, not a few months of pressured work before an exam is taken. Children need to be able to continue working at this high level when moving forward into their secondary school, so key skills need to be embedded. Parents should choose a school which is right for their child and not try to change their child to fit into a certain school. Schools are different, with their own particular focus or defining characteristics that makes them unique. Therefore, finding the right school is essential to ensure that your child feels happy and settled when moving forward.

The team became one of the first in the country from a state school to reach the semi-finals of the England Schools National Plate competition. PE teacher and Team Coach, Vikki Rundle-Brown, said: “This year, it’s going to be a lot tougher, as the team is straddled across two age groups (half are U16 and half are U18), which means we have to play everyone up in the U18 age group. “We did lose two key players, who left the school at the end of Year 11 but have replaced them with some very talented Year 10s. We are entered in the National Schools U18 Tier 2 competition (the same competition as last year but in the older age group). 68

Withington Head Girl Kea is Appointed to the Mayor’s Youth Panel Mr Burnham, who initiated the formation of this panel, said at the first meeting that he has come to value the opinions of his young advisors and encourages them to “be critical and to hold us accountable to ensure the young voices of Greater Manchester are heard”.
Withington’s Head Girl, Kea Bell, has been appointed as a member of the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority (GMYCA) – a panel of young people representing the ten boroughs and various communities of Greater Manchester, who advise GMCA Mayor, Andy Burnham, on key issues and concerns of young people and offer solutions to those concerns.
Last year, the GMCA was actively involved in the concept and eventual implementation of the Greater Manchester 16-18 bus pass. This year, Kea is involved in developing a new apprenticeship and careers app, which aims to open paths to employment and training for Greater Manchester’s school leavers and the consideration of ideas for connecting different generations in common cause. She is also part of an Environment Working Group, who are planning their own Climate Summit to be held at The Lowry later this year. Kea says there is a very strong sense within the panel that their ideas and advice will be listened to and will influence the policies and activities of the Office of the Mayor. She said, “It has really sparked my interest in politics and it’s exciting to know that it can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

It gives you a 300-degree view of your baby’s room day or night, two-way audio communication, pre-installed lullabies and a handy room temperature monitor. Data encryption is integrated as standard for added security. £99.99, boots.com
If there’s one thing I’ve seen a lot of recently, it’s babies. I’ve got three of my own, all born within the space of two years, and judging by every street and coffee shop in the suburbs where I spend my time, we’re far from alone. So, most of you will know that when it comes to us and our babies, we’re always looking for anything and everything to make our lives easier.

The 4moms mamaRoo is a smart infant seat that supposedly replicates the natural motions of parents. Its futuristic spaceshiplike design might not be in keeping with some posh period interiors, but trust me, you won’t care! It’s extremely effective at calming a crying baby at times when you need your hands free. Some of the motions include ‘car ride’, ‘kangaroo’, ‘tree swing’ and ‘wave’. It is Bluetooth-enabled, so you can control motion and sound from your mobile device. You can also adjust the seat to any position up to a full recline. £239.99, John Lewis
Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep machine
Ewan the Dream Sheep
If you’ve got a baby on the way, stick this woolly friend high on your shopping list of essentials. He doesn’t just look cute and comforting, he also makes all the noises that seem to magically soothe – or almost hypnotise – the little ones. Squeezing each of his feet gives a different recorded sound, from a reassuring heartbeat that replicates the sounds of the womb, to ocean sounds or twinkly music, which automatically fades out after 20 minutes. £29.99, Argos
If you’re formula or combination feeding, the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep machine is a game changer. It will prepare a bottle in less than two minutes, which is a lot less time than waiting for the kettle to boil, then cool, while a grumpy baby makes his/her feelings heard. First, it filters water, then an initial hot shot of water kills any bacteria present in the formula and helps it to dissolve. Just measure out the formula and the Perfect Prep machine adjusts the water to body temperature. It allows you to be confident that every bottle you make is the right dilution and consistency. £79.99, John Lewis

The BeeAnywhere even takes its name from the worker bee, the famous symbol of the city’s culture of hard graft and industry. So, why is it so special? Put simply, it promises to tackle the biggest barrier to widespread adoption of electric vehicles – cost. Manchester company MeV has spent the past two years designing and developing a low-cost electric vehicle that can retail at the same price as an average car, for example an 8-year-old hatchback, rather than competing on price with new vehicles. It is expected that once the high up-front costs of ownership are removed, mainstream buyers will be attracted in big numbers to the simple and clean alternative to internal combustion, especially for urban use. To create an affordable vehicle, the company has combined the expertise of the National Centre for Motorsport Engineering at the University of Bolton with advanced composites from the 72

University of Manchester’s Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre. The resulting innovative chassis design and composite body allows the vehicles to be assembled from a minimum of parts, significantly reducing production and component costs. The company has already started building these tiny urban two-seaters, managing to keep costs down thanks to the fact that it is completely designed for purpose rather than an electric-powered version of a pre-existing car design. This not only keeps it simple but also introduces the use of advanced materials, allowing the BeeAnywhere to be designed for minimum maintenance and maximum recyclability.
MeV’s team of experts come from backgrounds ranging from supercars to space engineering and they began their research and development with one simple question: “Why are electric vehicles so expensive?” They tested several small electric vehicles over thousands of miles in order to understand how to design a vehicle to be highly efficient, low cost and easily maintained. They also discovered that another barrier slowing down the adoption of electric vehicles is battery range. However, in an urban environment, most vehicles do not exceed 100 miles per day and theBeeAnywhere is designed with hot swappable batteries to reduce time spent charging, something that is especially important in car sharing or 24-hour fleet applications. Of course, it’s too soon for us to have seen a BeeAnywhere in real life, but judging from these concept photos, it looks anything but cheap – despite a target price of under £10,000! If they can pull that off, that’ll be yet another enormous jewel in the North West’s crown.
