HELLO It’s almost holiday time and I can honestly say that I don’t think I’ve ever needed a holiday as much as I need this one! It’s been a hectic year for us – what with house renovations, weddings, big birthdays and illness, not to mention work and everything else in between. The Brainwave Strictly Summer event was a huge success. I didn’t win, but I got four 9s from the judges for my quickstep, which was the third highest

score. I thought that was pretty damn good for someone who partakes in no exercise at all! I’m really missing my dance class and the exercise too, so I will most deﬁnitely be back at Cadmans Dance Centre after the holidays. A huge THANK YOU to everyone for your support and donations.

The ‘This is Manchester Awards’ will recognise individuals and organisations rooted in Manchester and within the fashion, entertainment, sports, hospitality and food and drink industries, the night-time economy, as well as individuals and organisations who have contributed to the community within Manchester and beyond. Categories include: Leading Bar/Restaurant/Chef/Hotel as well as Leading Live Event/Music/Venue/Cultural Venue, Force for Fashion, Business & Community Awards, plus special awards for Centenary Woman and Manchester Supernova. The judging panel selection has already started and the key influencers already signed up as ambassadors and judges include: Ged Doherty (Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry and BRIT Awards Limited and the co-founder of Raindog Films), Joleon Lescott (Retired Manchester City, Wolves, Everton, West Brom, Aston Villa, AEK Athens and Sunderland Footballer, TV Pundit and DJ) and Kate Squire (Managing Editor, BBC Radio Manchester). Ziara said: “As a proud Mancunian, I’ve been lucky to work with many high-profile individuals within sports, music and industry – all of whom wax lyrical about how amazing Manchester is and how proud they are to be representing Manchester on a global scale. I was surprised that such a great city didn’t have a multi-sector awards set-up to recognise those forward-thinking businesses and individuals.

“This is not a whimsical project, I’ve spoken to literally hundreds of people about the awards, all of whom think it’s a great idea. I guess it was just time for me to step up and I’ve been overwhelmed by all the support we’ve had so far.” When nominations close on 31st August, there will be a published shortlist and period of reﬂection for the judges. The winners will be announced at an awards event at the Hilton Hotel Deansgate on 8th November 2018, with organisers promising a fantastic headline act, which will be announced nearer the event. Monies raised on the night will all be donated to the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Homelessness Fund. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said: “Across Greater Manchester, organisations and individuals are working together to end the need for rough sleeping. We would like to thank the ‘This is Manchester Awards’ for supporting the fund to do just that and wish all the entrants the very best of luck and recognition they deserve. ‘TIME FlIES’ AS MANCHESTER AIRpoRT CElEbRATES 80 yEARS

Treasured tales of travel spanning eight decades have inspired a special short film created by Manchester Airport and world-renowned poet Tony Walsh. Called 'Time Flies, it was released to celebrate the airport’s 80th birthday. The film tells the story of Manchester’s evolution from a single wooden hut in 1938 to the UK’s third largest airport and a key driver of global trade and tourism for the whole of the North. It features poignant memories from passengers, businesses and airport workers past and present, with the words used to narrate the footage penned by famous Mancunian wordsmith Tony. The collaboration comes as the airport continues with its £1 billion Transformation Programme, with the film featuring stunning aerial footage of the construction site, showcasing the scale and significance of the project. Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “Looking back over the past 80 years has made us appreciate more than ever the important role Manchester Airport has played in the lives of so many people across the North. “We have unearthed so many stories, from people’s first time on board an

aircraft, special holidays and family reunions, to husbands meeting their wives and rock stars passing through our terminals. “There really was no better person to work with on this special project than Tony, whose words capture the sense of pride we all feel about Manchester and the wider North, and celebrate the things we are famous for around the world. “And there is no better time to be celebrating how the airport has developed over the years, as we look forward to creating the world-class gateway the North deserves through the largest investment in our history.” Among those featured in Time Flies is Phillip Mallinder, of Clifton, Salford, who was born exactly one month before Manchester Airport opened in 1938. He is one of the millions of people for whom air travel wasn’t possible for more than 40 years and is seen flicking through the holiday photos from his first trip abroad in the early 1980s. Also featured is Brenda Chadwick, from Didsbury, who called into a BBC Radio Manchester phone-in to tell the story of when her and her family used to get dressed up for flights years ago and

how, one time, they were greeted by a photographer in the Isle of Man, who took their picture as they left the aircraft. The future generation also makes the cut, with pupils from nearby Ringway Primary School making a special appearance. A class is shown drawing and designing a bespoke 80th birthday card for the airport to use. The Ringway Primary pupils featured are just some of the15,000 students the airport’s Community Relations Team work with every year on a host of aviation-themed projects. From the airport itself, Special Projects Director, Tony Lavan, is seen clutching one of his old passport photographs. He joined the airport more than 40 years ago as an engineering apprentice and has carried out a host of Manchester Airport Group roles over the years, including managing director of Humberside Airport and asset management director. And, husband and wife Gary and Janet Brown, who met whilst working at the airport and are both now terminal duty managers, are also stars of this inspirational ﬁlm.

KElloGG’S 20TH ANNIVERSARy pARTy CElEbRATIoN

To mark the 20th anniversary of its support for school breakfast clubs, cereal giant Kellogg’s hosted a community breakfast extravaganza at its new home in MediaCityUK and launched its new community programme, Breakfasts for Better Days, in Salford. On 28th June, Kellogg’s served breakfast outside its Salford oﬃces to celebrate with employees and key partners in the community who have been involved with the wonderful initiative. More than 60 primary school children from the local area attended the event alongside Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, and Kellogg’s Managing Director, Oli Morton.

Local schools provided adorable entertainment with a selection of breakfast poems, songs and jokes. In January, and after nearly 30 years of residence at Talbot Road, Kellogg’s relocated its 420 UK office-based employees to MediaCityUK. Now the company is keen to support its new neighbours and has announced the launch of a new flagship community programme, Breakfasts for Better Days, in Salford. The first project Kellogg’s is supporting is with the Salford Food Share network; providing food and funding for summer holiday projects in six locations of Salford.

Over the past 20 years, Kellogg’s has supported more than 3,000 school breakfast clubs with funds, food and training – all to tackle morning hunger and provide school children with access to nutritious breakfasts in safe and social environments. Kellogg’s managing director, Oli Morton, said: “Kellogg’s has provided 70 million bowls of cereal and over £3million over the past 20 years to enable children to have the best possible start to the day. “It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate this landmark moment in our new community with those who have been directly supported by the programme.”

MAGGIE’S oN THE RuNWAy

A cancer diagnosis is anything but glamorous. The treatment can be gruelling and intense, often leaving a legacy of low conﬁdence and self-esteem. Maggie’s on the Runway brought together around 50 models all living with cancer for an afternoon of fashion and fundraising for the marvellous Maggie’s Cancer Support Centre, next to the Christie Hospital in Manchester. All the models were treated to a fabulous beauty makeover before they took to a custom-built catwalk under a

decommissioned Concorde at Manchester Airport and showed guests that you can still look amazing and have fun whilst going through treatment. Amongst the highlights was a special performance by honorary ambassador Rick Astley, who serenaded 10 glamorous models down the catwalk to his new single Beautiful Life, and an inspirational underwear/swimwear catwalk sponsored by Figleaves featuring 27 women who had been through treatment for cancer.

The talented exec’s joined with Cadman’s Dance School and gave show-stopping performances, before a captivated crowd and the judging panel which included TV and radio star Gemma Atkinson, Strictly’s own professional dancer Gorka, and Lady Emma Fellowes. The crowd voted for their favourite and Real Housewives of Cheshire star, Seema Malhotra was named the winner of Brainwave Strictly Summer 2018.

In conversation with Margo & Charlie Cornish…when Margo met Charlie

hen Margo Cornish moved to Cheshire in 2004 with her CEO husband Charlie and their four children, she could quite easily have relaxed into ‘lady of leisure’ mode. Instead, she launched the renowned Runway on the Runway charity event and, to date, has raised £650k for Maggie’s Manchester and other local cancer charities.

We met the couple at The Colony HQ to discuss their 37-year relationship, the prospect of working together and their regular disagreements over football… How did you both meet? Was it love at ﬁrst sight? M: We met in a nightclub in Glasgow in 1981, I was a student and Charlie had just started his ﬁrst job in Newcastle. We kept in touch by letter until he moved back home in 1983. Lasting love grows but, yes, I knew he was sort of special. C: We only managed a few dates before August/September 2018 | salutions.co.uk

I headed back to the North East. Clearly (laughs) this brief interlude was enough to hold Margo’s interest until I returned to Scotland. Charlie, you’re currently CEo of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), what do you find most fulfilling about the role? C: We are currently working on a £1 billion capital transformation scheme at Manchester and a £500 million scheme at Stansted. It is especially pleasing to know these schemes make a major contribution to the economic development of our regions, for example, we now have over 20,000 people employed at Manchester Airport. Margo, was giving up your job difficult when you moved to Cheshire? M: I’d ticked all the boxes I’d wanted to as far as my career was concerned, my last role was Head of Resourcing and Manpower Planning at one of the largest NHS Trusts in Scotland, so the decision to move came at a good time.

Were you not tempted to spend your days lunching and shopping? M: I’ve always loved to keep busy, so it wasn’t very long before I joined the school parents committee. The charity work quickly followed and now my charity work is more or less full-time. Charlie, did Margo’s new direction surprise you? C: Not in the least! Margo is from Glasgow and is so far removed from a lady who lunches! Does the fact you’re both busy and working independently strengthen your relationship? M: Absolutely, it keeps my brain ticking as well as feeling energised. C: Indeed, if Margo is busy, she stays away from the shops! (both laugh) Would either of you have been as successful without each other’s support?

M: Yes, probably, but I think that having Charlie’s support has made it a lot easier. The concept of Runway obviously came about because of Charlie’s airport connection. Can you imagine yourselves working together? M: It couldn’t be! There’s never room for two bosses! C: I will plead the ﬁfth amendment on this question! Charlie, you must be incredibly proud of what Margo’s achieved? C: Absolutely. Margo is not only committed to raising money for her charities but also raising awareness in terms of prevention and symptoms. Her work has touched directly or indirectly thousands of people in Greater Manchester and Cheshire. She works night and day on Runway. I’m clearly on the periphery but always available for advice when required (laughs), but only if I agree with her! My prime job is to bid on

auctions to contribute to her fundraising targets! Margo, tell us about your most recent awareness and fundraising event… M: In June; around 50 models – all living with cancer – took to the Concorde catwalk and raised the roof once again. It’s looking like the ﬁgure raised will be in excess of £200k and every penny goes straight to Maggie’s Manchester. £650k raised since Runway launched… and you obviously have no plans to stop? M: Once I reach £1 million, I will feel accomplished. Seriously though, I feel privileged to be able to dedicate my time and energies to supporting people living with cancer. I couldn’t do it without the amazing army of people (from retailers to models) who make it such a magical and supersonic experience every year. What are you both working on at the moment?

M: The next Runway project will soon start taking shape, it’s too soon to say anything yet, but it certainly will be signiﬁcant! C: Working with colleagues to bring more airlines to our airports (and, in doing so, adding more value to the North West), winning more contracts in the US, helping to promote the Northern Powerhouse Partnership and progressing our major capital schemes. Finally, you look so incredibly at ease together, surely there must be something you disagree on? M: Football! Charlie supports Rangers, I support Celtic… but that’s really the only thing we don’t see eye to eye on. At 49, with fitness and aerobic qualifications firmly under her belt, she reverted to her favourite childhood pastime and trained as a swim and fitness instructor, specialising in the open water experience You see, aged 12, her early promise in competitive swimming and dreams of swimming the Channel were dashed. Hit on her way home from school by an articulated lorry, Christine narrowly avoided an above-the-knee amputation and spent a month in hospital. Of course, life rolled on, but, until recently, gently spoken Christine remained too embarrassed to reveal her skin graft and injury scars. Swimming, her passion, had become a no-no. By 2014, sporty Christine recognised the futility of her self-consciousness and started afresh. She tackled and completed her first triathlon, retrained at Salford’s Helly Hansen Water Sports Centre for the occupation close to her heart – and stayed on as its open water swim specialist.

Her role entails encouraging mainly adult pupils to enjoy the natural elements, to overcome their fears of open water in the safety of Dock 8 at The Lowry and to prepare, as she did, for long-distance challenges too. After all, practising here led to Christine’s 2015 relay swim across the Channel and her solo crossing the following year. Currents, tides and traffic in this, the world’s busiest waterway, create problems for enthusiasts. Christine clocked up 43 miles in 18 hours 56 minutes to finish what is basically a 21-mile journey coast to coast! “Many people are nervous of what may lie beneath them,” says Christine, “the fish, the weeds and the dark water itself. I felt the same at first, so I understand.” Dedicated to her metier, Salford’s ‘This Girl Can’ ambassador adds: “I’m not into winning and competing any more. For me, it’s about motivation and having a go.

After all, guess who trails in last at most events – yes, it’s me!” Open water swimming is gaining popularity as an eﬀective stress and depression buster. There’s also the social aspect of post-swim refreshments. Christine’s two-hour sessions run three times a week from April to October at Helly Hansen. To keep abreast of safety, she works closely with the RNLI. The sport attracts people all ages. In our climate, wet suits are a must – even if, as Christine recalls, the occasional enthusiast turns up wearing it back to front! A former Greater Manchester swim guard, she admits that, at ﬁrst, she wasn’t a big fan of the sport: “I used to disregard open water swimming, but now, seeing people join in who didn’t think they could even put their face in the water is so gratifying. Swimming in the sunshine or in the rain is inspirational and the water’s far cleaner than you’d expect. Try it.”

The Demise of our High Street The high street lies at the heart of any British town, city or village. In recent years, small business owners have an increasing concern that the high street may be about to die out. The closure of big names, such as Woolworths back in 2008, Blockbusters in 2013 and, more recently, BHS less than two years ago, has sparked fears that the high street may be in trouble.

In 2012, retail guru Mary Portas launched her campaign to save the high street. The Government backed the campaign, handing over £1.2m to towns, including Stockport, hoping it could transform them into thriving retail hubs once more. Unfortunately, the failed campaign saw nearly 1,000 shops in towns under her watch close in just ﬁve years.

So, why do shoppers seem to be abandoning the high street? Shop owners suggest that the current business model may be failing today’s shoppers, that shopping needs to be more of a social experience and that people simply don’t have the time to stop and browse anymore, especially when the internet allows them to have their shopping delivered to their door at the click of a button. In the UK, one in seven shops are boarded up and independent fashion retailers are

feeling the brunt of it. Sarah McQueen, owner of McQueen’s Independent in Didsbury, says: “We noticed a change with the internet initially. People have less time, they used to spend more time shopping, now they have other avenues of spending their time at the weekend, because people prefer to wine and dine and socialise. But people don’t get the kind of service in bigger stores that you get in smaller boutiques.” Internet sales are growing at a phenomenal rate and online shopping accounts for roughly £1 in every £10 spent in retail. Johanna Davies, owner of Black White Denim in Wilmslow, says: “As a nation, we have got busier and life has got faster. People don't have the time to walk or drive to shop, park up and browse. They're not

prepared to wait until the weekend to go shopping anymore, if they want something, they will hop online and buy it for delivery asap. The rise of the big online retailers, such as Amazon and ASOS, has changed the way we shop forever.” Sarah McQueen says that shopping locally is paramount if the local community wants to keep hold of their high street: “It’s really important to support businesses and people you know feed your community. When you shop in a local shop, you’re supporting people who live locally and shop locally, so that becomes something very sustainable. When I go shopping, I go back to speciﬁc places because I have a personal relationship with somebody and I know I spend my money in places I want to keep. I buy my milk from the milkman and use the local butchers and bakery. If you can, welcome that community back into your life.”

Research by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that last year, Manchester experienced the highest number of retail store closures, which was a blow to local communities. Shop owners are being urged to adjust to the new retail landscape rather than just disappear. SeeSaw lingerie has been selling underwear to women in Altrincham for 76 years. Johanna Bolhoven has owned the store for the past two. She says that shop owners need to adapt to the changes that the internet is bringing: “We’ve noticed in the village that our footfall has been down this year,” says SeeSaw’s Johanna. “The high street will attract different people at different times because of different things going on. We all need to make a conscious change in what we do. There is lots that local councils and landlords can do to make it easier for small businesses to set up and there’s lots that brands and suppliers do to help us with promotions in-store, so that we’re not always competing with online organisations, who are able to discount heavily because they order in high volumes. There is a combination of things that can be done to make it a little bit easier in a bricks and mortar establishment.”

Shop owners insist that it’s the loyalty from local customers that allows them to survive and that building a relationship with them is crucial. Johanna continues: “The personal, expert service you get at small independent boutiques cannot be replicated online. Small independent shop owners really understand their customers, they develop a relationship and it would be absolutely tragic if that personal service was to disappear completely.” Some bigger retailers are trying to make shopping a more social experience by using DJs in their stores. For many people, particularly older shoppers, shopping may be the only sociable experience they encounter: “You can go a whole day without speaking to somebody,” explains Sarah McQueen, “put your petrol in your car, shop at a till without having eye contact with anybody… and it doesn’t have to be that way. We think it’s convenient, but isn’t it just isolating?” As well as the internet changing the way we shop forever, Amanda Alexander, owner of Giddy Goat Toys in Didsbury, also blames business rates and the cost of rent. She says: “Online shops don’t have to pay high street rents, rates or VAT and can undercut those of us who do. The playing ﬁeld should be levelled by reassessing the

rates system, as that is a huge cost for a lot of retailers, and maybe providing retail units that have achievable rents. Mine, for example, has increased by 50% in six years, which is an enormous increase.” As small fashion retailers fall into decline, it seems that there is a rise in the number of independent coffee shops that are opening. Philip Hayes, of Didsbury’s Art of Tea, says: “We rely on the footfall of local residents and the reputation we have. We keep ourselves to ourselves and 11 years on we’re still here.” Philip says it’s important to keep a creative mix of stores on the high street: “Perhaps we should put restrictions on how many types of premises open – to keep the flow and so it doesn’t just become bars and cafes: We all need something during the week from greengrocers or butchers. Ever since the local butchers opened two years ago, we have gone there for our supplies.” It’s obvious that the less we shop locally, the less we know of our neighbours. So, what can be done to draw people back to their local high streets? Many shop owners say that all they need to do is keep their finger on what their shoppers want and turn shopping into more of a social experience, but if £1.2m from the government can’t do it, what can?

MOSAICS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK The Archaeological Park of Kato Pafos is one of the most important archaeological sites of Cyprus and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980. The park includes sites and monuments from the 4th century BC to the Middle Ages, while most remains date to the Roman period. The intricate mosaic floors of four Roman villas form the impressive epicentre of the finds and depict various scenes from Greek mythology. VASILIKON WINERY Vasilikon was one of the first local wineries in Cyprus, established in 1993 in the Kathikas area of Paphos by the three brothers of the Kyriakides family. Its successful operation is based on the excellent quality grapes, which are mainly picked from the

family’s vineyards. Their technicallyadvanced machinery, knowledge, care and dedication make Vasilikon one of the most accomplished wineries in Cyprus. Reservations for a winery tour and tasting can be made via info@vasilikon.com We had an amazing stay in a beautiful suite in May of this year. The resort itself was outstanding and a lot bigger than we’d anticipated; it can only be described as a little village. Our suite was beautifully spacious with a comfy bed and beautiful bed linen, a Nespresso machine (which is a necessity first thing in the morning and late afternoon whilst taking in the views on the balcony) and a control box next to the bed, which controls all of the lighting in the suite. The pool area was amazing with plentiful sunbeds, fluffy towels and wonderful staff on hand, who are only too happy to take your order for another iced strawberry daquiri.

Depending on how hungry you are, there are many dining options, and the sumptuous breakfasts at Bacchus and Cape Aspro are not to be missed. If you can move yourself away from the poolside, the Hébe Spa is well worth a visit for a relaxing Swedish back massage. Applying medium to strong pressure, this massage targets the back, neck and shoulders. If you fancy getting out and about, there are a number of options. We tried all of the above, but my favourite has to be our golf lessons with the pro at Eléa Estate Golf Club. If you are looking for some R&R in a beautiful hotel in a serene setting combined with a mix of culinary delights and friendly, welcoming staﬀ, then this is the perfect place for you. We will most deﬁnitely be back!

However, I stuck to my absolute favourite Pina Colada, which was so good that I had to have two!

MAGICAL MAURITIUS

Club Med has been a beloved institution for French holidaymakers for decades, offering premium all-inclusive family and adult-only holidays across the globe. Jill Nash takes a trip to Mauritius with her family to explore what it has to offer. EXPLORE One of Africa’s most loved destinations and located in the middle of the magical Indian Ocean, Mauritius seems to offer everything – from luxurious resorts and perfect white beaches to clear waters for snorkelling and feasts of fresh seafood. It also has a myriad of UNESCO World Heritage sites, world-class golf courses and mountain trekking for those who don’t want to lounge around on a beach all day. One of the key aspects for families is that, despite the rather long flight (which can be broken up by a stop-over in Dubai), there is only a three-hour time difference between Mauritius and the UK, which makes adjusting easy for children. There are also plenty of educational aspects, as Mauritius has a rich and varied history, mixed Creole heritage and a natural environment to explore. Club Med La Plantation D’Albion offers children the opportunity to try scuba diving, paddle boarding and daily island sightseeing on a speed boat. There are also plenty of other exciting activities for children to try, such as the expertly run trapeze school and archery, meaning that they will never be bored. The resort is 44

perfect for parents seeking R+R whilst their children are kept active and busy in the kids’ club, learning French as they go. If you want to explore with your children, there are plenty of excursions offered (there is an on-site office to help you plan), including an organised family boat trip on which you can swim with wild dolphins, or a glass-bottomed boat ride, which runs twice daily at 12noon and 4.30pm. It's an island of discovery under the sea and great for spotting and learning about the local marine life, which includes clown fish, trigger fish and snappers – the whole family will love it. The resort itself is set is a lush 21-hectare resort and feels more like a nature reserve than a hotel resort. Wonderful wildlife and exotic vegetation shape the landscape, and the natural beach spots with swirling riverbeds change the scenery every hour with the tide. The stunning infinity pools (there are separate ones for families and adults) offer the relaxing spots where you can enjoy a cocktail – why not, it’s all-inclusive after all. If you manage to get time by yourself, the Zen-like Cinq Mondes Spa is world-class. The expert therapists offer a comprehensive

spa menu in treatment rooms with stunning sea-views. The relaxation area is perched on the cliff over the Indian Ocean, serving teas and fresh fruit… post-treatment, you won’t want to move. SLEEP All the rooms and suites have a balcony or a terrace, but if you are with little ones, make sure you request interconnecting. The Club Deluxe rooms are generously sized and include a useful sitting area and ginormous bathrooms, the latter complete with freestanding roll-top baths and double sinks. The design has a traditional Mauritian feel – natural wooden floors, brightly decorated textiles and large floor-toceiling glass doors looking onto the gardens or sea. Nice additions include the complimentary minibar, fluffy bathrobes and turn-down service. You probably won’t be spending much time in your room, but if you do prefer some privacy, there is room service for breakfast (complimentary), which makes it easier than rushing out to the restaurant first thing in the morning when the children are hungry, and there’s a good choice of movies on demand for when it’s time to wind down.

DRINK & DINE The Le Banian Bar (located in the main building) is where you will probably spend most evenings before and after dinner. They serve complimentary drinks throughout the day, and after 6pm, they serve chilled Champagne. The bar is next to the main swimming pool and the La Distillerie restaurant, where you can enjoy a variety of themed dinners, from Italian to sushi. Every evening there is a theme, so make sure you pack a variety of outfits to join in the fun (but if you forget, there is always an on-site boutique to help you with those last-minute panic buys). Typically, there is White Night and a Mauritian Night, where the children do get costumes and dance around the restaurant. The children will love the themed entertainment, from the poolside fire shows to the Michael Jackson Thriller tribute. The most popular is the trapeze show, where the highly trained trapeze artists show off their skills on the high ropes. There is no shortage of eccentric evening entertainment, but if its peace and quiet you are looking for, you can opt to dine at Le Phare restaurant, where there’s table

service and an à la carte menu – still included in your package. Although it caters for children, this restaurant is quieter and specialises in local Mauritian cuisine and Asian dishes. The views are stunning, but make sure you book in advance, as it’s very popular. To unwind at the end of the day, head to the beach bar, where you can grab a sundown drink with sand in your toes, sitting in the tropical paradise. If you are looking for all-inclusive, hassle-free yet adventurous family escape, La Plantation D’Albion Club Med scores highly. ow plants happen to be pretty partial to liquid lunches too. I always knew we were a match made in heaven. Although, I admit, I haven’t yet come across a plant that loves white wine as much as we green-ﬁngered ladies. Perhaps it’s just as well, as I’m not sure my lovely lunch companion, Lady Beaton of The Atwood Estate, nor I, is up for sharing our precious vino with my cavolo nero and Catalina spinach. But I digress. Back to those thirsty plants and with the summer we’ve had this year, those plants are pretty damned thirsty. As my lack of bingo wings will attest, all that watering can carrying has had an upside after all. Result. Don’t get me wrong, ﬁrst and foremost, fruit and vegetable plants need a good nutritious soil; building it up by adding manure, rich compost and organic fertilizers is absolutely key to growing healthier, stronger produce. Many crops

do, however, like a liquid ‘tonic’ or liquid ‘tea’ every two to three weeks through the growing season to give them a quick fix burst of nutrients. You can pick up liquid tonics at local garden centres, e.g. Maxicrop Seaweed Plant Growth Stimulant. All you have to do is dilute it into a watering can and apply via watering can or sprayer. But there are also a couple of miracle plants that I use in my kitchen garden and down on my allotment: comfrey (Symphytum Officinale) and the common old nettle (Urnica Dioica). Both comfrey and nettles are incredibly fast-growing, plus they are very deep rooted – this allows them to reach far down into the subsoil to draw up nutrients, such as nitrogen and potassium, which help crops to flourish. To release these nutrients, all you have to do is steep nettle or comfrey leaves (roughly chopped up) in a bucket of water, cover and leave to stew for two to three weeks. The fermented liquid will stink to high heaven,

but once diluted with water (10-parts water to one-part liquid fertiliser) to the colour of weak tea, it will work a treat on your plants. As an added bonus, nettles and comfreys can be cut right down to the ground up to four times a year, so try and grow a clump of each at the back of your garden or, if you are short on space, in large pots. Crops that love potassium-rich comfrey tea include tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, cucumbers and blackcurrants, whilst crops that love nitrogen-rich nettle tonic include kale, Swiss chard, cabbages, spinach and salad leaves. Right, must dash. Got to find a new watering hole. The manager of our usual has just messaged saying his new, rather sexy, young French barman is still a tad traumatised from our last visit. Apparently, we invited him to take tequila shots off Lady Beaton’s uber-firm cycling thighs and my newly-buff bingo wings. A vicious lie I tell you. As if two respectable ladies would ever do such a thing…

Set in one of Spring Garden’s most beautiful buildings, Grand Paciﬁc lives up to its name – Grand! It is an absolutely stunning building and you see something new everywhere you look.

Alston Bar and Beef, which opened its doors almost a year ago, can be found tucked away from Manchester’s hustle and bustle in a quieter section of the Corn Exchange, with its own entrance from Cathedral Street. Down an illuminated stairway is the plush 1837 bar, which serves over 60 varieties of gin. We tried classic Tanqueray with cucumber and watermelon tonic – utterly refreshing! There’s also two-for-£10 cocktails and live music on a Thursday. Then there’s the basement restaurant, which is contemporary come classic, with industrial metal and exposed pipe ﬁnishes. We ordered the popular and fruity Raspberry Royale cocktail and the zesty Cucumber Cooler shaken with lemon juice.

Fresh produce, local ingredients and beautiful baking is what you’ll ﬁnd at The Creameries in Chorlton. A very unassuming building set on Wilbraham Road, you’d never know that this quaint little restaurant existed until you’ve been in.

I was seated in the opulent dining space behind the very impressive bar. The menu is eclectic and there is plenty to choose from. I started with a Chirashi Sushi Bowl, which was so beautifully presented. The waiter informed me that every dish has been thought about as to how it will look on Instagram. Perfection. I paired my starter with a Bloody Mary – the drink of champions (or those needing a hair of the dog!). For my main course, I indulged in Beef Tsukamen, Seared Rump Steak, Udon Noodles and Mushroom Dashi. It was divine. An absolute triumph and, again, looked very aesthetically pleasing. Cocktails are one of the most exciting things at Grand Pacific, and the theatre that comes with some of them is incredible. Think blowtorches, flames and enough fruit to qualify as a week’s worth of your five-a-day! If you like good food, amazing cocktails and awesome buildings, then visit Grand Pacific. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Then the food... we started with crispy Courgette and Corn Fritters and Roast Scallops with prosciutto and a black pudding crumb. Naturally, beef options are aplenty and we thought it rude not to try a steak – one fillet and one sirloin, both juicy and served with creamy peppercorn sauce and garlic and herb butter. Onion rings accompanied – more like onion balls, but gorgeous all the same. We finished with a summery Strawberry and Rhubarb Sundae and a gooey and rich Chocolate Brownie topped with toffee ice-cream. Alston provides chocolate heaven and is undoubtedly up there with the best steak houses in town.

The idea behind The Creameries is small plates, and you order two or three per person. We started with Fresh Sourdough with whipped brown butter, possibly the best butter I have EVER tasted and all made fresh that morning. We also enjoyed a plate of pickles on the side – a great accompaniment and full of flavour. As one of our main courses, we had Buttermilk Poached Lemon Sole with charred purple sprouting broccoli and verjuice. It was so delicately flavoured and the fish fell apart as soon as I put my fork into it. It was cooked beautifully. As I’m a bit of a cheese fiend, for dessert, I chose three different cheeses accompanied by freshly baked crackers and homemade chutneys. This place really is a treat; a lovely ambience, very attentive staff and a guarantee of trying flavours you won’t have experienced before. Well done to the team!

The cosy and intimate King Street Tavern, located in central Manchester’s King Street Townhouse Hotel, has a regal, step-back-intime feel. We melted into the buttery leather seating, sipped a cold glass of wine and instantly felt at ease (despite being seated opposite the amazing cast of Cold Feet). The menu recommended sharing three small plates between two for starters, which we gladly did, although we found it difficult to choose which ones; all the options were equally as mouthwatering. We opted for delightfully juicy Garlic and Herb King Prawns, Lamb Kofta and five Spice-marinated Peppered Squid – fresh and tasty. For main course, we enjoyed a cheesy baked aubergine Melanzane Parmigiana and a superbly succulent mediumrare Fillet Steak, served with hand-cut chips, flat mushroom and tomato. For dessert, we opted for Lemon, Poppy Seed and Almond cake with blueberries and a refreshing gin and tonic sorbet – perhaps the nicest dessert we’ve ever tasted. And then there was the Double Chocolate Toffee Popcorn, a medley of caramel toffee sponge, double chocolate marquise and popcorn ice-cream. To. Die. For. We enjoyed gins to finish at the waiter’s recommendation; his own rhubarb creation with hints of cinnamon, orange and gingerbread and finished with Fever-Tree aromatic tonic water, and a lemon and basil gin mixed with Mediterranean Fever-Tree – yum! The King Street Tavern is the perfect choice for classic British food in a classic British setting.

Nestled in the heart of Manchester’s Corn Exchange, this Vietnamese restaurant is cosy and convenient. Comfy booths provide a private dining space, while large tables and informal benches are available for a quick bite or social gathering over food and drink. We were handed the Summer Drinks Menu, consisting of cocktails, fresh juices and ‘Ugly Water’. With this being a Friday evening, the alcoholic options of Pina Pho-Lada and Summer Lemonade were naturally our first choice. A selection of starters arrived for us soon after; simple but delicious Gỏi Cuốn (rice paper rolls with herbs, vermicelli and pickle); Gỏi Ngo Sen (shredded chicken and prawns upon a tangy lotus and green bean salad); Nem Nướng (pork and lemongrass meatballs with lettuce and herbs, accompanied by the most amazing peanut sauce); and the Bò Lá Lốt sharer (beef wrapped in betel leaves and served with rice vermicelli sheets). Two chicken and prawn Phở Xào dishes (wok-fried noodles accompanied by lemongrass, chilli, Asian greens and peanuts) were for mains. Extra toppings are available for customising food to personal taste. We finished with crispy Banana Fritter and an indulgent Chocolate Truffle Slab, both served with deliciously creamy honey and ginger ice-cream. The handy Pho To Go service is also available, ideal for working office lunches or a takeaway at home that’s refreshingly different.

We were invited to review the original Pointing Dog in Cheadle Hulme following its extensive refurbishment, and the new-look bar and restaurant did not disappoint. The well-established venue is effortlessly stylish, where Scandinavian chic meets country retreat vibe. With Sausage and Mash, Fish and Chips and a range of steaks available (not to mention the Sunday roasts), along with Ham and Mustard Scotch Eggs and Spiced Lamb and Poppy Seed Sausage Rolls, the menu offers something for traditionalists and spice lovers alike. We began with a bottle of Ma Terre Vin De Provence Rosé – crisp, fresh and full of flavour, a new addition to the bar’s range. Two cheesy dishes were to start – Buffalo Mozzarella and Mature Cheddar Risotto, topped with spring onion, pickled red onions and a crispy hen egg, and a Marinated Buffalo Mozzarella Salad with asparagus, peas and broad beans (a great choice for veggies). Then, for mains, came the tender Beer-roasted Chicken Breast with carrots, buttery mash and roasted hazelnuts, and the Gloucester Old Spot Sausages with spring onion mash, bacon and gravy – tasty classics. For dessert, we ordered Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with butterscotch sauce and a dollop of clotted cream, and a Lemon Curd Meringue Pavlova. They were huge – perfect if you have a sweet tooth like us!

Emma Murray-Gyte is newly-appointed Head of Sales at the prestigious Mere Golf Resort and Spa in Knutsford. Here, she talks us through a typical working day at the sought-after destination…

Morning check-in “The first thing I do is respond to my emails – my inbox is never empty and there will always be an enquiry about hosting a wedding, conference or Christmas party at the resort. Next, I’ll check out the most recent guest feedback. Because I grew up just down the road from The Mere, and also because I had to keep an eye on the competition in my previous role (she was head-hunted from Mottram Hall just over a month ago), I know what an incredible reputation it has. With the recent takeover and planned future developments (the architects are already appointed!), it really is an exciting time to join the team and we always use guest feedback to support future changes. Business lunch As well as nurturing existing clients, part of my remit is to bring in new business, which means visiting potential clients off-site or welcoming them to the resort and giving them the ‘Mere experience’, which includes lunch at either Browns restaurant or the Club Lounge, which boasts outstanding views of the Mere Lake. The lake and the championship golf course are great USP’s and even includes a floating driving range – the only one in the UK. The resort’s setting and the fact it’s so close to motorways and the airport is always a big draw.

Afternoon team meeting After lunch, it would be time for a team meeting. I love the team here – every member, regardless of their level or department, works as one and we all share one vision when it comes to making the business a success. The work ethic here is fantastic. Night time I tend to work late or at weekends if there’s a special event happening. I recently hosted a table of guests across three days at Boodles Tennis – a championship featuring past Wimbledon winners and a long-standing highlight of the local social calendar. This is the sixth year The Mere has hosted the event; my clients loved every second and so did I. I would hate to sit at a desk 9 to 5, so I don’t mind the ﬂexible, unpredictable nature of the industry. I live a 50-minute drive away in Buxton and it’s a wonderfully scenic place to unwind.

What’s next in my diary… Team Mere is ready to take the resort to the next level and ﬁrmly establish it as the premier luxury destination of choice in the North West – to nurture its uniqueness and provide a world-class service. We’re looking to capture the Middle East market too – which could mean some overseas trips for me!

Away from work, I like yoga and early morning runs. Together, my husband and I (we got married last year) enjoy wine and gin tasting, cooking, gardening and travel.

My ideal guest in the future? The Queen! She’s smart, elegant, hard-working – she amazes me and I really hope I look like her at 92!

ASK THE EXPERTS Is there such thing as a no-fault divorce in this country? No, the Divorce law of 1973 has not changed. A Petitioner has to rely on one of ﬁve facts in establishing that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Three are based on having been separated from/deserted by the Respondent for two years or more. Only the facts of unreasonable behaviour or adultery can be relied on straightaway (following a year of marriage). Do unreasonable behaviour petitions often get rejected? A recent high-proﬁle example is the case of Owens -vOwens 2017, in which the Court dismissed the wife’s petition, leaving her (as the Court of Appeal acknowledge) “trapped in [a] loveless marriage” and having to wait until 2020 to get divorced. Despite the wife pleading 27 unreasonable behaviour allegations in support of her petition, the court dismissed it following the husband defending the divorce. The Supreme Court heard the wife’s appeal in May 2018 and a judgement is now awaited. Is there call for reform? Resolution (an organisation committed to a non-confrontational approach to family law issues) supported Mrs Owens’ appeal and has stressed the urgent need for no-fault divorce in light of the case. If the Supreme Court rejects Mrs Owens’ appeal, this will renew calls that Parliament should consider changing the law to move in line with a changed society.

What are gallstones? Gallstones occur when bile (which is usually liquid) forms tiny crystals that, over time, grow into stones which sit in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is located under the liver in the upper abdomen. Gallstones are very common and will develop in approximately one in every seven adults during their lifetime. Risk factors for gallstones include being overweight, pregnancy, losing weight quickly and advancing age. They can cause pain in the upper abdomen (which can often be severe) and infection. In some circumstances, complications of gallstones can be life-threatening. What are the treatment options? Sometimes, gallstones are found by chance whilst investigating an unrelated condition. If they do not cause symptoms, then they do not need to be treated. The only eﬀective way to treat symptomatic gallstones is by removing the gallbladder along with the stones. This is done using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery using four very small incisions. Laparoscopic surgery means that most people can be discharged from hospital on the same day of surgery. Recovery takes around seven to 10 days, although many patients are able to return to work and normal activities sooner.

What are night sweats? In menopausal women, ﬂuctuating levels of oestrogen impact upon an area of the brain that regulates body temperature, confuse the brain and raise body temperature. Sweat glands are triggered and the result is sudden and intense perspiration. Is menopause the only cause of night sweats? Everyone can sweat in the night if their environment is too hot and not ventilated, but night sweats mean you wake up with damp or wet clothing and bed sheets. 75% of menopausal women will experience night sweats, making it one of the most common of the 34 physical symptoms of menopause. Other causes include: cancer, pregnancy, hormonal changes, anxiety, alcohol and substance use or hyperhidrosis. In some cases, it can be the sign of a serious illness. If you’re unsure, always speak with your GP. Do night sweats last forever? Unfortunately night sweats can last up to 11 years. I have arthritis in my knee. Do I need a knee replacement? Arthritis is a degenerative condition of the knee, where the lining cartilage on the bone wears away. A newer biological therapy, known as the n-STRIDE injection, is now available. Osteoarthritis increases ‘bad proteins’ being produced in your knee and this contributes to cartilage breakdown. The n-STRIDE injection aims to improve this by using your own blood to concentrate ‘good proteins’, which are then injected back into your knee to target the arthritis. This can improve your knee symptoms. This newer therapy targets the underlying arthritis rather than just masking the pain like steroid injections. Are there any new developments in knee replacement surgery? Technology has been developed to allow use of what is called ‘personalised knee replacement surgery’. This involves taking a scan of your knee to allow the customisation process. This can also be combined with robotic knee replacement surgery to improve the surgical precision even further. There are many potential advantages of these techniques. There is currently only one type of robotic knee system that combines pre-operative planning with a scan and the intra-operative precision. This system will shortly be available in Manchester, which I will use to augment my knee replacement operations.

body studio and a reception and hospitality area. In an action-packed day of activities, every pupil and member of staﬀ took part in the

Dame Sarah – Britain’s longest serving athlete (swimming and cycling), the country’s most successful Paralympian of all time and holder of 75 world records – commented: “It is a huge inspiration to me to walk into such an incredible facility in such an incredible school. It is exciting to imagine what will be possible at Withington in the future because when you have facilities like this, it provides opportunities and inspiration and fits well with my own personal motto, which is ‘to be the best version of you’ that you can possibly be.” The ceremony closed with a film produced by Withington pupils, which was set to the rousing Queen tune A Kind of Magic, with the lyrics – One dream, one soul, one prize, one goal – providing a fitting soundtrack to the day’s exciting events. Three pupils from a Shropshire college are celebrating after being successful in a national essay writing competition. Two of the pupils at Ellesmere College achieved Merit Awards, while the third was Highly Commended for their entries into the prestigious JowettSendelaar Essay Competition, run in collaboration with The Classical Association. Kit Lewers and Aditi Chezhian are Year 9 pupils, while Lucy Conway is in Year 8. Melody Reynolds, Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Ellesmere College, said: “This is a well-established and highly regarded national competition and we are delighted that three of our pupils have been recognised. “The standard of entries is extremely high, with each year seeming to surpass the last in terms of quality. ALISTAIR MANN RETURNS TO MGS

One of Britain’s most decorated sports broadcasters and a familiar voice on Match of the Day returned to his old school last week to inspire a new generation of journalists. BBC and BT Sport football commentator Alistair Mann, a former pupil at The Manchester Grammar School (MGS), returned to his alma mater on Thursday 14th June to speak to Sixth Formers about his career. He also sat down with Year 10 pupils Bruno Quinney

and Fergus Stevenson and, in somewhat of a role reversal, was interviewed by the boys for their football podcast Kick Oﬀ, which is broadcast on MGS’s school radio station. After leaving MGS, Alistair trained as a journalist at the University of Central Lancashire. He told a packed audience of MGS Sixth Formers how he gave up his weekends for unpaid work experience at the Manchester-based Piccadilly Radio (which became Key 103 and, later, Hits Radio), learning the ropes. After four years, he got a job as a researcher at ITV Granada. He told MGS boys that he stood out amongst the 4,000 other candidates for the job because of his years of work experience with Piccadilly Radio, which convinced Granada bosses of his passion, commitment and determination. He has won three Royal Television Society national awards and is also a previous winner of the BT Journalist of the Year award. Meeting Alistair was a particular highlight for Bruno, as the teenager has his sights set on a career as a football commentator or even a chat show host. Earlier this year, he was heralded as one of the best young sports commentators in the UK, having been one of just 15 youngsters shortlisted from across the country for BBC Five Live’s Young Commentator of the Year award. THE GLObAL FORuM FOR GIRLS’ EDuCATION

On June 19th at the Global Forum for Girls’ Education in Washington, headteachers Claire Hewitt from Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) and Helen Jeys from Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) co-presented their tried and tested pastoral care strategies to educators from 20 countries worldwide. Irrespective of contrasting mores, cultures and expectations, their contribution to girls’ education proved universally relevant. Claire says: “It didn’t matter where you’d come from. What brought 800 of us together from six continents was our commitment to enabling girls to flourish.” On stage Headteachers rarely take the floor as a ‘double act’, but Hewitt and Jeys, the Girls Schools Association’s only North West delegates, share a professional history, a friendship and an implicit belief in balancing academy with character building. Their presentation styles differ but with regard to the holistic education of girls, they think and act as one. Principles Highlighting the dangers of comparison, ‘that thief of joy’ and ‘poisonous’ perfectionism, Claire explains: “There’s always someone better, prettier or cleverer around. Girls should focus on themselves, avoid striving for perfection and just be the best they can be. Our planned approach to pastoral education is inter-connective and cross-curricular. It works throughout the entire school; from our assemblies, workshops and themed ‘Thought for the Week’ to time out for mindfulness.”

That’s why we are pro-active rather than reactive in delivering pastoral care. Claire and I want students to leave school with self-assurance, to celebrate success, but gain resilience by learning lessons from failure… and not give up.” Some character-building practices Recognising a pupil’s ability to manage her disappointment over a poor subject result, her teacher will send that girl a ‘Hug Your Monster’ postcard. MHSG’s ‘Blow Your Own Trumpet’ week allows girls to affirm their strengths, not with arrogance or conceit, but with honesty and pride. During AESG’s ‘Leap of Faith’ week, students are encouraged to attempt challenges outside their comfort zone – anything from climbing and boot camp to handling reptiles and biological dissection. The conference In keeping with concluding speaker Billie Jean King’s parting shot – ‘if you can see it, you can be it’ – the sense of positivity at the Global Forum was palpable. Fully supported by their governors, Hewitt and Jeys were able to put their schools, their careers and their professional passions on the map – literally. It is vital in girls’ education to acknowledge the pastoral and academic as being inextricably linked. Helen warns: ‘If you ignore a girl’s happiness, you do so at her peril… and your own.”

STOCkPORT GRAMMAR SCHOOL GEOGRAPHERS ExPLORE THE AzORES

Geography pupils from Stockport Grammar School travelled to the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,500 miles west of Portugal. The islands, all formed by volcanic activity along the mid-ocean ridge, are awash with hot pools, lakes, waterfalls and green areas. After a quick visit to the local geothermal power station and Lagoa de Fogo Lake, pupils enjoyed a swim in a hot pool under a waterfall. They also got chance to admire the Baroque architecture in the town of Ribeira Grande, followed by an afternoon on Santa Barbara black sand beach.

The visiting party learned about the geological activity in the area by visiting Furnas Valley, which is full of hot springs, sulphuric lakes and the smell of sulphur from the active undergrounds. In Terra Nostra botanical gardens, pupils enjoyed a dip in a yellow and brown swimming pool that is discoloured by the iron in the water, followed by a visit to Gorreana tea plantation. The next day was spent on the sea, whale and dolphin spotting and the group visited a lava tube that formed during a previous volcanic eruption in the area, walking through two miles of underground tunnels.

HEART TRANSPLANT ExPERIENCE FOR YEAR 9 SCIENTISTS

Taking part in a unique demonstration, 40 students were talked through scientiﬁc details whilst taking part in a realistic simulation of the life-saving procedure. The simulation of an intensive care scenario was performed with old medical equipment and a real heart bypass machine pumping blood (water with red food dye) to and from the dummy patient. Demonstrated by the Rise team, Dr Julian Barker, Director of ECMO and Lead Clinician for Cardiothoracic Critical Care and Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at University Hospital of South Manchester, Wythenshawe, discussed diagnosis and treatment – from arriving in A&E with a heart attack to suﬀering cardiac arrest.

Aspiring medics and biologists from Year 9 and the Sixth Form at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS) received a full surgical experience when they were given an insight into what happens in the operating theatre during an emergency heart transplant operation.

Where better for Tessa Boase to launch Mrs. Pankhurst’s Purple Feather, her book on the female founders of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), than in Didsbury’s Parsonage Gardens, a stone’s throw from the home of founderin-chief Emily Williamson. Here at The Croft in Fletcher Moss in 1889, Emily, the childless wife of Alpine garden enthusiast and lawyer Robert, formed her all-female Society for the Protection of Birds (SPB). This genteel, pre-Suﬀragette protest group was incensed by the slaughter of birds worldwide to merely satisfy the whims of fashion and commerce. History 19th century trends in headgear and earrings changed quarterly. ‘Avian adornment’ was the Victorian fashionista’s must-have. But could creating such ‘murderous millinery’ justify the near extinction of the kittiwake and the American snowy egret? Wafting like the fascinators of today, the egret’s desirable

The topic Social historian Tessa Boase hasn’t inherited her ornithologist father’s passion for birds. Neither is she into couture. Her interests lie in highlighting British unsung heroines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Our gentle yet tenacious Emily Williamson ﬁtted the bill perfectly. In fact, her letter to Punch in 1891 had the mainly male readership respond so strongly to ‘birds in bonnets’, that Emily’s inadvertent PR coup put the SPB on the map. That same year, she merged her group with Elisa Phillips’ Croydon-based Fur, Fin and Feather Folk (uncannily, both were formed in 1889) and the charity consolidated. Based in the south, closer to Westminster, the SPB began to wield more clout and, enthusiastically supported by both men and women, began to grow.

Emily’s dreams to materialise. In 1921, the Duchess of Portland, lifelong RSPB President from 1891 till 1954, oversaw the passing of the Importation of Plumage Prohibition Act. Now in its 130th year, RSPB boasts 1.2 million members, 1,545 paid staﬀ and 18,750 volunteers. The book Tessa’s two years of research were intense. She explains: “The RSPB never celebrated its early history and completely disregarded its female founders. Now, Emily Williamson is being recognised and a beautiful bronze plaque, funded by Didsbury locals, will soon be installed outside her former home for all to see.” And about time too! Actor Jason Done on career and family – in association with the new Lexus RX L at Lexus Stockport

Jason Done may still be best known to some for his turn as devoted English teacher Tom Clarkson in the successful BBC One drama series Waterloo Road, but the Salford born and bred actor has cropped up in a number of acclaimed British TV shows through the years while also having a subtler but no means less eﬀective presence oﬀ-screen as narrator of several well-known documentary shows. Highlights include the immensely popular Channel 5 series Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away! and Paddington Station 24/7 – a well-received behind-the-scenes look at daily dramas encountered at the iconic London station. Jason moved to London aged 21 to pursue an acting career with his best mate, who was also looking to get into the same profession (“We were both very competitive and after he decided to move down there, I thought there was no way in hell I was getting left out”). It was during his stint

on Waterloo Road that Jason met his future wife Anoushka (a PR Director) and eventually made the move back to the North West. Throughout his career, Jason has maintained a strong link with his home city, from appearing in productions at the Royal Exchange to offering up his time in a number of community-led projects and charity events. Career-wise, the actor will next be seen in the forthcoming British-made, Scandinavian -flavoured Netflix thriller The Innocents, which stars Guy Pearce and is currently receiving a fair amount of buzz online. Jason can’t reveal too much about the show presently, but teases that it’s a love story with a supernatural twist: “All the cast have signed non-disclosure agreements. That’s when you know, as an actor, you’re onto something decent, when you’re sworn to secrecy. I play a detective chief inspector, who has a bit of a frisson with one of his colleagues. It’s another

little thread and narrative dynamic through the main story.” Now a busy father of two active young boys, Jason has found his car needs have changed quite signiﬁcantly over the last few years: “These days, I think there’s the desire for something aesthetically pleasing, but there are still other aspects to take into account, such as decent boot space, for example. You need room in the car, as you’re constantly in and out, usually lugging around bags and gear. In my case, I’ve got four family members in there with all their gadgets and whatnot. When my ﬁrst son was born, I had quite a nice little sporty soft top, but I soon realised that a) it didn’t feel as safe and b) as you can imagine, it was a real struggle constantly getting a car seat in and out. I think that’s ultimately why many families now opt for SUVs.

THE NAME’S A CLUE

If ever there was a carmaker that takes pride in its heritage, it’s Ferrari. The new 812 Superfast is a case in point: despite having mastered turbocharging and hybrid technologies, Ferrari has steadfastly stuck to a naturally aspirated engine for the latest in its long dynasty of FR (front engine, rear-wheel drive) supercars. The most powerful naturally aspirated production car engine ever made, to be exact. The FR grand tourer with a big V12 engine has always been a staple of the Ferrari range and it is a format which, the marque admits, is extremely hard to keep innovating. But “for heritage reasons”, they continue to press on – and the latest in the line does not disappoint.

For a start – and perhaps of most interest to Ferrari buyers – the 812 Superfast lives up to its name. It is indeed incredibly fast. That 6.5-litre engine makes nearly 800 horsepower, which means the car needs active and passive aerodynamics and carbon ceramic brakes to keep the thing under control. Also, buyers will be pleased to note, it’s both loud and expensive. I don’t have a ﬁgure for the decibels the exhausts put out, but I can conﬁrm the price tag. Its base price is over a quarter of a million pounds. But, as I always say at the Ferrari dealership, in for a penny, in for a pound. Might as well spend a few quid more on that matching luggage and some custom detailing…

A FERRARI FOR UNDER £30? The Superfast’s predecessor is the already legendary F12tdf – another extreme V12 grand tourer that was produced in extremely limited numbers until this year. So, when I was told I could have one for under £30, I looked into it. It turns out that this one is under 30cm long, has no engine, and I had to build it myself. But this Meccano version genuinely did make me almost as happy as the real thing. As a little boy in the 80s, I loved Meccano. So, for a nostalgic night in, this absolutely hit the spot. Also – perhaps the real test – I gave one to my young nephew, who loves it too. Meccano is doing a great job of making science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fun and accessible to kids of all ages and, for that reason alone, I can’t recommend it highly enough. This kit takes between one to three hours to build and includes all necessary tools, decals, ﬂexible body panels, nuts and bolts. Ages 10 and up, now £25.99 at argos.co.uk
