HELLO And breathe… I’m sure the past few months have been an emotional roller coaster for most of you. For us, it was all about GCSEs, A-levels and the prom.

SALUTIONS HQ It’s all about the visits, awards, launches and lunches…

Adam Thomas, Zara Uddin-Khandakar and Scott Thomas at the Next autumn collection launch at On the 7th, MediaCityUK

Before I was a ‘Prom Mom’, I thought it was the night when girls wear beautiful dresses (in the hope that nobody turns up sporting the same), boys wear ill-fitting tuxedos and pose awkwardly for photos, and the glasses contain more than juice! Actually, I was right about the girls (and the juice), but I have to say, that the boys are (not before time) catching up with the girls and taking a keen interest in what they wear. They even want to be in every photo! The prom is a special event, and it’s an absolute pleasure for parents to see what lovely young ladies and gentlemen their children have grown into. June and July have been busier than ever – we’ve had summer balls, golf days, afternoon teas, lunches, dinners and spa openings – so, we’re all looking forward to the summer holidays, and a chance to breathe and recharge our batteries. In the meantime, there are lots of lovely articles for you to enjoy inside this issue, including Salim’s trip to Ibiza with British Airways. BA now fly to Mallorca, Nice, Alicante, Malaga, Mykonos and Ibiza from Manchester, so, if you’ve not yet booked a holiday, it’s worth checking out the prices. There’s also my interview with the very lovely Eamonn Holmes, who I was lucky enough to catch up with when he visited Manchester recently. Our next issue is out in October, and we’ll be looking ahead to the Christmas season and a wealth of wonderful events, especially our annual Winter Wonderland Charity Ball at The Midland hotel in Manchester. Not bought your tickets yet? Email salim@salutions.co.uk Finally, we’d like to wish lots of good luck to all those parents and children eagerly awaiting exam results day. Have a safe and sunny summer everybody!

Am I a good candidate for the CoolSculpting® procedure? The procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat in targeted areas. Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of. Many people want a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Where does the fat go? Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

Forever Unique recently hosted a Celebrity Danceathon in aid of the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. The event took place in the Sports Hall at Parrs Wood High School in Didsbury. Forever Unique is owned by Seema Malhotra, star of The Real Housewives of Cheshire, and she invited a whole host of her celebrity friends to ‘join the movement’ and support the cause. Those first to get their feet moving were a number of Real Housewives, soap stars and tV personalities, including Stacey Forsey, tanya Bardsley, Leanne Brown and husband Wes Brown, Brooke Vincent, Ellie Leach and Hollywood actor Omar Benson Miller. The event opened with a very special live performance from the incredible Parrs Wood Harmony Group – as seen at the One Love gig at Lancashire Cricket Ground. Over 200 participants took to the stage to partake in the Danceathon, which was

DANCEATHON led by three professional choreographers – Becci Elliott, Katy Moore and Jonathan Chianca – whilst a further 200 spectators eagerly watched their loved ones take part. All dance participants were thanked with a bespoke Forever Unique Charity t-shirt, while spectators were given the option to purchase their very own t-shirt for £5 each on the day. The theme of the event was ‘One Love’, in honour of hit star Ariana Grande, and attendees were encouraged to turn up in bright colours and bunny ears to add to the fun nature of the evening.

Speaking at the event, Seema explained why she organised the event: “In light of the devastating events in Manchester, we wanted to get our community together and lift everyone’s spirits. This cause means everything to all of us, and we hope our charity danceathon has brought a smile to everyone’s face. We can’t thank everyone enough for their support and generous donations. “I’d also like to say a special thank you to our amazing choreographers for keeping our feet moving, and to the incredible Parrs Wood High School Harmony Group for their heart-touching vocals.” All proceeds have been donated to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. The fund was set up to help those affected by the attack at Manchester Arena. The money raised will help alleviate immediate suffering and ensure that victims and their families do not face short-term financial difficulties.

From Hollywood to Heskin – rare painting by Salford artist returns to Lancashire Hepplestone Fine Art gallery in Heskin, Lancashire, has received an original oil painting by Salfordian artist Harold Riley. The Retail Art Gallery of the Year 2016 is currently displaying the rare work, which is titled Figure Study and priced at £7,950. Originating from Salford, Riley was a close friend of L.S. Lowry and they regularly worked together, sharing a mutual love of Salford. He was commissioned on many occasions by the Royal Family and has painted Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as well as Pope John XIII, John F. Kennedy and Nelson Mandela, to name a few. Forty years ago, Blackpool-born film director Peter Chelsom received Figure Study as a gift from his late mother, Kay, a fine art and antiques dealer. Over the l ast twenty years, the painting has graced the walls of various Hollywood production offices, travelling with Peter and helping to keep him grounded: “This painting has always reminded me where I’m from,” says Peter. “In the middle of all this film madness, I’m still a boy from Blackpool and proud of the fact! to be honest, it has also kept me inspired; it is such an impactful depiction of struggle and toil, and therefore a comfort amidst the battles I fight each day getting films made. I suppose you could say it’s my Churchill's 'never give up'.”

New luxury hair and beauty salon opens in city centre Spring Gardens is one of Manchester’s most prestigious thoroughfares and is part of the Upper King Street conservation area and has become home to what must surely be the most luxurious unisex hair and beauty salon in the city. House of Evelyn is the brainchild of 28-year-old Evelyn Cong, who has a masters degree in international fashion retail from the University of Manchester, and it recently opened its doors to Manchester’s elite with a glitzy VIP party. The salon offers a range of treatments for men and women, including Carita’s must-have summer treatment, the bacial – a facial for your back area, which promises to give you blemish-free, silky-smooth skin. The one-stop unisex boutique spa also offers hair, nails, pedicures, facials, massage, make-up, a licensed Louis Roederer champagne bar, and clients can also have Knutsford perfumer Peter Murray design their very own perfume wardrobe. “I think this is just what Manchester needed,” says Evelyn. “I felt that there was a need for a luxury salon, for both men and women, with everything under one roof; somewhere relaxing for people to go, and come out totally transformed and refreshed.” 10

MP Jeff Smith meets rising handball star Sebi Hesk Labour MP for Manchester Withington, Jeff Smith, met rising handball star Sebi Hesk at Parrs Wood High School recently. Jeff also watched Sebi coach pupils at the school. “It’s great to see young people doing such fantastic work in Manchester,” said Jeff, a former governor of the school. “Sebi is a talented sporting leader and a credit to Parrs Wood, which continues to give great opportunities for young people in South Manchester. We will look forward to watching Sebi’s career flourish.” Sebi, who recently received an achievement award from Manchester Sport Foundation, in partnership with GLL’s athlete support programme, the GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), and Manchester City Council, said: “It was great to be able to coach some of the Year 8s at Parrs Wood. They performed so well! It was also good to meet and talk to my local MP, Jeff Smith, and to be able to show him what an exciting game handball is. "Handball has helped me to meet and make new friends whilst keeping fit and healthy, and visit other parts of the world. The talent pathway which England Handball has developed really

does help young people like me to develop the skills required to progress to any level they want to. Handball is fast paced, energetic, and so exciting to play. You don't need any experience if you want to give it a go. You could ask your teacher about playing it at school, or contact your local handball club, which you can check out on the England Handball website."

Parrs Wood teacher inspired Sebi Sebi has progressed through the England Handball talent Pathway and was selected in the England Under-6 squad that played in the Cell Cup International competition in August 2016. England came second in their group during the tournament, with Sebi top scoring for the national team. He has been selected to represent the England National Academy (under-16s) again this year in the International Competition in Viborg, Denmark.

Sebi, who plays for Warrington Wolves (under-18s), was originally encouraged by his PE teacher Ms Waterhouse to join the training sessions at Mancunians Handball Club. He was also part of the North West regional team, which came second in 2016 and went on to win the National Regional finals in 2017.

Free picnic boxes from the Woodland Trust The charity is offering a free picnic box, which includes colour-yourown invites, a money box, stickers, finger puppet coasters, an oak leaf cookie cutter, a double-sided tree spotter sheet, fundraising ideas, and a Woodland trust donation form. A tree party is a fun way to learn more about nature whilst enjoying the outdoors, away from televisions and computer screens, and helping raise money for the Woodland trust. Great British Bake Off champion Nadiya Hussain has also provided a savoury muffin recipe. Across the UK, trees are in serious trouble right now. Millions are dying because of diseases, such as ash dieback, and hundreds of ancient woods are under threat from development, and government planting rates are at an all-time low.

The Woodland trust wants families across the UK to Invite a tree to tea over the summer holidays and is giving away free picnic boxes to help. The trust wants to encourage families and friends to host a tree party anywhere – a garden, park or local green space. It is a great opportunity to forget about the hustle and bustle of city life.

Christina Fain, Chief tree Party Organiser at the Woodland trust, said: “By inviting a ‘tree for tea’, families can spend valuable time outdoors whilst raising money that will go towards planting trees and protecting our precious woodland.” People can apply for a picnic box at woodlandtrust.org.uk/treeparty or via the Woodland Trust homepage.

When Beverley met Eamonn… Beverley Uddin-Khandakar admits she has “two favourite men” in her life – This Morning host Eamonn Holmes and her husband. So, you can imagine her delight when she got to catch up with the former in one of her favourite places – Manchester Airport.

Eamonn was in town to officially start Run Around the Runway, a unique 6km charity run around Manchester Airport’s runways, raising money for Manchester Airport’s charity, CLIC Sargent, and British Airways’ charity, Flying Start. Beverley couldn’t wait to ask him all about his involvement in the event, his connections to Manchester and, of course, what it’s really like to work alongside your wife… So, Eamonn, how did you get involved with this event? The community team at British Airways first contacted me a number of years ago, and I like to help if I’m available. It’s nice to do things for them from time to time when they ask me, and it’s great to see people put their own time, heart and soul into these events – they love what they do. I know Manchester has a special place in your heart, tell me more… I’ll tell you something, if I could choose to live anywhere, after Belfast of course, it would be here. Manchester is where I first came to Network tV and I had five blissful years, living and working here. We lived in Cheadle Hulme and then in Gatley – it was lovely. I’ve spent a lot of

time at this airport over the years too! Ruth and I both say we could see ourselves moving to Manchester, we have so many friends around – and United are here! I work with my husband Salim and, at times, it can be challenging… but I wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s the best and worst thing about working with Ruth? The best is working with someone you adore and love. The worst is that she never takes my advice on how we can improve when we work together, as she sees it as criticism. Ruth does not talk about work, which I find frustrating – I live and breathe work. She’s very good at what she does, but she operates differently than me. I don’t think you need to improve! There’s always room for improvement. Ruth is a genuinely decent person, she doesn’t play the politics of the game. She’s very committed and successful – it’s good. Any tips for readers contemplating working with family? My father was a carpet fitter and myself and four other brothers have all worked with him at various stages. I’ve seen how it doesn’t work. Sometimes, you end up taking advantage of people you know

personally. Family businesses should be brilliant but, in reality, it’s tough. It’s good Ruth’s career has taken off, she does Loose Women and has a fashion label with QVC. Being together is good, but having time apart makes you stronger. Aside from Ruth, you co-host with other presenters, such as Holly Willoughby and Kate Garraway. What’s that like? Presenting anything with anyone else is unnatural. It’s like driving a car, you don’t need two drivers. But different people bring different challenges, you just figure it out and what works. I think I’m a generous presenter. I let others have a lot. How are your hips after your operation? They’re getting better, I’ve been doing lots of physiotherapy to learn how to walk properly and for help with alignment. There’s no pain and I’m enjoying getting to grips with them. It’s hard to believe that having your hips re-done takes away pain in your neck, shoulders and back too. I’m soldiering on. What’s next for you and Ruth Our travel series Eamonn & Ruth: How the Other Half Lives is back on Channel 5 for a new series in the autumn.

Silverfox Events

Shelley Stoll met up with Raj Somaiya, Managing Director of Silverfox Events, the event planners who organise some of the world’s most memorable special occasions 22

Rising to the Occasion

Many people think that organising a special occasion is a straight forward affair. After all, setting a date, choosing a location, and feeding your guests can’t be that hard, can it? As the man behind south Manchester and London-based Silverfox Events explains, “every event should be a memorable one - so why not relax and leave all the planning to the experts?” Raj Somaiya says he has learnt everything he knows from his late mother Tarla, the founder of the business. “She believed” he says “that the beauty of event planning was being able to join souls together”. From these words of wisdom, Tarla’s memory lives on in the passion and commitment shown by the Silverfox team when they go the extra mile for their clients.

By Shelley Stoll | Photography Martin Hambleton

After only a short time in Raj’s company, the reason for the team’s success becomes very easy to understand; his drive and passion are infectious. “It’s about knowing your client and working as a team” he enthuses, “having a connection with a client means we are able to produce events which mirror them, and understanding them as individuals, means we are able to deliver events which include the right amount of energy, emotion and excitement”. His unwavering commitment to each event he produces, becomes more noticeable as he goes on to describe the recent marriage of a couple employed by Morgan Stanley, New York. The wedding included twelve events in a single week; each boasting its own unique style. The brief was to encapsulate culture, tradition and religion – but with grace and elegance. NOT MUCH TO ASK THEN! Raj laughs. “Not only did the event require remarkable décor, but the family, being Hare Krishna/Jains requested that the food did not include onions or vegetables grown from the ground. This was a challenge for the team”. The solution? They brought award winning Asian and Indian caterers Payal – on board, who developed a brand-new menu, bringing an authentic taste of India to the occasion.

Raj is keen to re-inforce Silverfox’s ethos “when it comes to fulfilling any brief, our team race forward to provide the very best so that all our clients have to do is be a part of the celebration, instead of worrying about logistics”. I can’t help but notice that the list of events Silverfox has produced is extremely varied and crosses many cultures. At a recent Barmitzvah he expounds, “we used vibrant colours and white washed staging reflected a recent visit by the Barmitzvah boy’s parents to Club Lio in Ibiza”. Lio’s (for those not in the know!) is a place renowned for its cabaret and entertainment. The goal was to recreate the same mood and atmosphere throughout the celebratory evening. Silverfox ensured both parents and children were entertained by extravagant dancers and performances from stars during the course of the evening. Destination weddings are also an important facet of the services offered by Silverfox Events to their clientele. From Ibiza to Capri, European weddings have allowed the team to gain valuable experience working abroad with people of different cultures. Being able to work alongside different planners and caterers surely demonstrate the flexibility of this crack team! “Of course, not all of our events solely reflect rites of passage” Raj is keen to point out. “A Great Gatsby themed birthday party is just another example of what the Silverfox team can achieve” He shows me pictures and video’s highlighting in minute detail every inch of the perfect marquee. Silverfox’s 1920’s nightclub came complete with champagne fountains, flapper dancers and magnificent chandeliers. There was “he boasts with a giggle “ lots of laughter courtesy of comedian Michael McIntyre too!”.

AND HIS MOST CHALLENGING EVENT YET? “We always rise to the challenge” Raj responds with his usual enthusiasm “Flying 240 guests over to the Island of Ibiza for an engagement, ensuring each and every guest was looked after meant the future bride and groom and their families were left to enjoy their special day. The making of people’s memories is left to us, and for Silverfox, there is no greater reward”. Not long ago, Silverfox Events featured in the Channel 4 documentary ‘My Big Fat Asian Wedding’. The programme allowed others to witness Silverfox and Payal’s commitment and dedication to each event they create. Highlighting some of the many challenges that running events for thousands of guests can pose. To see some of the illustrious work undertaken by Silverfox for yourself you can watch a series of short videos at SIlverfoxevents.co.uk. For Raj Somaiya and his team at Silverfox Events, each challenge seems to bring out the renewed dedication to provide excellence. I am sure his mum Tarla would be proud.

Parrs Wood On 4th June, the tear-jerking performance of Parrs Wood High School’s (PWHS) Harmony Group pierced 50,000 hearts at Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert for people affected by the Arena bomb. Many schools cut back on the arts, but not Parrs Wood High School. Their music went global. For Head Teacher Mark McElwee, Music Director Hannah Groarke, Choirmaster Daniel McDwyer and his 26 11-17-year-old choristers, summer half-term holiday 2017 proved an emotional and exceptional roller coaster. WEEK ONE May 22: PWHS sixth formers Shaunna Burns and Adam Khan attend Ariana Grande’s Manchester Arena gig. Terrorist kills 22, injures 250. Both pupils are unharmed. 23: Daniel’s Harmony Group learns his last-minute arrangement of Grande’s My Everything. 24: Song recorded at school and down loaded to social media, Just Giving page set up. 25: ITV News contacts Hannah. 26: Harmony Group film for ITV News (6.30pm and10.30pm bulletins). 27: Harmony Group invited to One Love Manchester by international promoter Live Nation. 24

August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

WEEK TWO May 28 – June 3: Daniel in Dubai. 29 – June 4: Hannah in New York. Mark, Hannah, Daniel and Music Technician Jamie Henry collaborate telephonically on Harmony Group’s TV appearances, One Love Manchester rehearsals, and press interviews for Shaunna Burns, 17, and soloist NatashaRose Seth, 12. HARMONY GROUP SCHEDULE June 1: ITV’s This Morning live. 3: One Love Manchester rehearsal at Wembley. 4: 14 PWHS pupils in Manchester United Foundation Youth Choir at Carrick testimonial (2pm).

One Love Manchester gig live (BBC One, 8.30pm,15 million UK viewers, 100 million worldwide). 7: Hannah convenes national press conferences. 10: £350 donated in one hour at Parrs Wood Tesco. July 4: Choir accompanies Katherine Jenkins on Songs of Praise (to be broadcast summer 2017) and opens Forever Unique Danceathon at PWHS in aid of One Love Manchester. 5: Foundation for Peace conference, Warrington. November: Recording for Choirs with Purpose album.

At the One Love gig, the Harmony Group stole the show. Who could remain unmoved by Natasha-Rose Seth’s spinetingling opener? Supported by her tightknit musical ‘family’, she admits: “I was really nervous. Below me, the crowd looked like a massive coloured field. Seeing them, remembering why we and Ariana were there, was so important. Singing took away the nerves.” But the Harmony Group’s two Arena survivors faced different challenges. For Shaunna Burns, some performance jitters were diffused singing during the Carrick testimonial, and meeting Ariana, The Black Eyed Peas and Chris Martin backstage, and spotting pals in the audience. Ultimately, once immersed in song, she, like Natasha,

was taken over by the music. That is its strength. However, musing over the serious, long-term imponderables, Shaunna says: “Accepting that something good can emerge from something so bad is difficult. My advice is, keep yourself busy, speak to someone, and remember, you’re not alone.” Coincidently, the most informed insight into terrorism and its aftermath comes from ex-Chetham’s School of Music pupil Hannah Groarke. At her school’s Open Day on 15th June 1996, she was thrust to the ground by the force of Manchester’s IRA bomb. She sported a neck brace for months. No emotional succour was provided. 21 years on, she instinctively plans multiple escape routes whenever confined to any large public space:

I’d dismissed those experiences as utterly useless,” says Hannah. “How wrong I was – they enabled me to approach and encourage our pupils to talk, and reassure them that I’ve been there too.” Pupil safety is paramount. Indicative of the 100% support given by the parents of Harmony Group members, no child has been withdrawn from the choir’s flurry of commitments – and it’s back on the road. Hannah concludes: “Remember, our performances aren’t about glorifying the Harmony Group, but about music, teamwork and the children’s determination to help others.” So, keep singing.

IBIZA – the destination with two faces There are two wonderfully distinctive sides to the Balearic island of Ibiza… we spent a weekend in search of both

Over the past two decades, Ibiza – the third largest of the Balearic Islands – has become synonymous with riotous all-nighters at world-renowned night clubs; a self-styled playground for the young and up-for-fun. But whilst the island still attracts the party crowd, there’s a wealth of beauty and history for families and travellers of a more chilledout persuasion to enjoy.

By Salim Uddin-Khandakar

WHICH IBIZA IS PERFECT FOR YOU?

30

For those who’ve set hi-energy dancefloors in their sights, the resort of Playa d’en Bossa or San Antonio town are established hotspots, and clubs such as Amnesia, Sankeys, Pacha, Ocean Beach and DC10 remain hugely popular. However, seekers of a more low-key Balearic adventure should head to the laidback town of Santa Eulàlia, with its generous selection of waterfront bars, restaurants and shops. Sun seekers escaping the hustle and bustle of UK city life will adore the coves and enclaves that lace Ibiza’ stunning coastline – they’re ripe for discovery and away-from-itall chillaxing. August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Autumn and winter are the ideal seasons to sample a more realistic taste of day-to-day Ibiza life, and also discover the island’s rich history; in particular, its World Heritage Sites. These impressive, precious sites include the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the cemetery of Puig des Molins (the largest necropolis in the world, housing up to 4,000 tombs) – both of which date back to 600-650 BC. And, if active holidays are your thing, both the island’s coast and countryside lend themselves to walking, cycling and snapping Insta-perfect pics. WHERE TO STAY For relaxation Palladium Hotel Cala Llonga This stylish and peaceful hotel (for adults only) is built into the side of a hill in Santa Eulàlia and boasts spectacular views of Cala Llonga beach – which is, quite literally, on its doorstep. As well as swimming in an up-on-high pool, you can indulge fine dining at one of three restaurants or kick-back and enjoy an evening of live

entertainment. If you fancy expending a little energy, you’re only 4km away from Ibiza’s only golf club – that’s if you can pull yourself away from the comfort of a deluxe room, complete with direct access to the sandy shores. All-inclusive deals available, palladiumhotelgroup.com For best of both worlds Hard Rock Hotel This Playa d'en Bossa-based hotel blends family-friendly luxury with beach club vibes, and even boasts its very own private beach area. The state-of-the-art Rocks Spa® and wellness centre (the biggest on the island) is the place to be pampered, whilst those keen to sample the ‘rock star experience’ can learn to DJ or play guitar. There are two outdoor pools (one even has underwater sunbeds!), suites complete with glorious views of the turquoise sea, and the rooftop bar is a must-visit for a sunset tipple before heading to an in-house gig for free. Child and teen activity areas, and five restaurants at which to refuel, are also on site. Selection of special packages available, hrhibiza.com

Picture perfect: The Seychelles

P

icture perfect, the Seychelles are a collection of glittering sandy islands, boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Whether you’re looking for a great family trip, a romantic retreat with your partner, or a relaxing hideaway and the chance to switch off from everyday life, the enchanting islands of the Seychelles are the ideal destination. Located in the stunning Indian Ocean, these 115 islands are awash with electric colour; vibrant orange sunshine, sparkling white sands, green jungles, turquoise waters and fiery red sunsets – a true tropical paradise. Popular with George and Amal Clooney and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (both couples honeymooned there), the Seychelles are home to some of the most glamourous hotels and luxurious resorts in the world, welcoming famous faces year after year.

The Seychelles have a rich and varied history, remnants of which are dotted over its many islands. You can visit coconut plantations, Hindu temples, markets, botanical gardens, cathedrals and churches to learn more about the local history and culture. If animals are more your kind of thing, there are several unique and different species native to the island, including the largest remaining population of Aldabra giant tortoises. These impressive reptiles can be found even in captive herds. The Seychelles are also home to some of the largest seabird colonies in the world, notably on the outer islands of Aldabra and Cosmoledo. Sooty terns also breed on the islands, along with cattle egrets and fairy terns. A wide variety of orchids, often dubbed the ‘pretty plant’, can also be spotted around the Seychelles. Any foodies can rest assured that they will leave the islands feeling truly fulfilled. Most

of the local food is based on seafood and chillies. As there’s very little local transport of goods, this means all ingredients are super fresh and tasty, and often come directly from a garden or fishing boat. Seychellois food is a fusion of flavours from African, French, Chinese, Indian and English cooking. This large selection of tangy, sweet, rich and spicy combinations makes the local cuisine a tourist attraction in itself. So, what about the weather? This is one of the many things that makes the Seychelles such a popular holiday destination all year round. With an average temperature of 27°C, and one that rarely drops below 24°C or rises above 32°C, it is never too hot or cold, creating the perfect beach weather and holiday atmosphere. Showers tend to be brief and tropical, but don’t tend to happen between the months of May and September, perfect timing for the summer holiday season.

Mark combines his role at the Court with his role as Head of Sports Law at national law firm Mills & Reeve, where he manages a team of 12 sports lawyers across six offices: “Most weeks I end up travelling to Mills & Reeve’s other offices in London, Birmingham, Cambridge, Norwich and Leeds,” says Mark. “Coupled with my international travel for the Court, it means I really appreciate keeping it local at the weekends.” In his free time, Mark says he rarely strays outside of Didsbury, choosing to shop and socialise locally:

Mark Hovell

The busy life of a sports lawyer

By Lindsey Farrelly

Didsbury resident Mark Hovell has played a major part in some of the biggest sporting events in the world, but he’s the first to admit that he’s no elite athlete. Mark is an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. His role has seen him appointed to arbitrate disputes at the world’s biggest sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Delhi and, most recently, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio: “I was one of only 12 arbitrators appointed to the Court’s ad hoc panel for the Rio Games,” explains Mark. “This meant spending four weeks in Rio, which sounds glamorous but was actually hard work – I was handed my first file of papers to review when I stepped off the plane at the airport!

“I spent the first week hearing back-to-back cases, many of which were appeals from Russian athletes against their exclusion from the Games.”

“We’re really lucky to have such a bustling high street with lots of great independent retailers,” he says. “Choosing where to eat out can be tricky though – I have two children who can rarely agree, but CAU and Gusto are high up on their lists. If I ever manage to get a quiet night out with Mrs Hovell, then we love sharing cheese and wine in Casa Italia.” Mark’s a keen runner and recently took part in the Manchester Marathon:

Luckily, once the Games started, Mark was called on less to deal with disputes, so he did get an opportunity to watch some amazing events with his family.

“To make sure I stay in shape,” reveals Mark, “I run to work when I’m working in the Mills & Reeve Manchester office, and then cycle home, and reverse the process the next day. It ensures I can fit exercise in without losing too much family time in the evenings.”

Mark qualified as a solicitor with Manchester-based firm George Davies almost 25 years ago, and that’s where he first got a taste for advising sports people. The firm represented the Professional Footballers’ Association and its members; Mark advised numerous footballers, managers and agents at all levels on commercial law and disputes. As his

Life for a sports lawyer never stops. Mark is off to Saudi Arabia soon, where he is assisting in the establishment of the new Saudi Sports Arbitration Centre. He’ll be training local lawyers on arbitrating sports disputes. He’s also secured spots as a guest lecturer on sports law at universities in New York, Madrid and Romania before the end of the year to keep him busy too.

The renowned and grand Midland Hotel boasts spa treatment and leisure facilities every bit as charming as the building itself

By Emily Fitzgibbons

T

he Spa at The Midland is at odds with the bustling streets just metres away – a tranquil oasis at the heart of Manchester city centre. On arrival, there was calming music, subtle lighting, soothing aromas, and soft grey velvet seating – everything you’d expect and more from a luxury spa. Comfy slippers, plush robes and towels were on hand, so the relaxation process could start immediately. Staff were softly spoken and polite, which added to the serene atmosphere. Before the treatments commenced, there was a briefing on exactly what each of them was about. There was an opportunity to select your preferred oils, scent and feel-wise, making the experience much more personal. Relax in Manchester – Face and Back Ritual is the perfect treatment for hard workers who need time out from city life. The treatment combines gentle exfoliation and a relaxing aromatherapy back massage with a face and scalp massage. This helps

to melt away any tension and leaves skin smooth and radiant. There’s also the option to upgrade all the treatments on offer at The Spa. Relax in Manchester, for example, can be upgraded with a conditioning hand or foot treatment. The second treatment I opted for was one of The Spa’s specialities – Signature Serene Sleep. It certainly does what it says on the tin – within moments, a lovely slumber washed over me. This treatment is simple, yet effective; delivering a deeply restful and unique experience. It features a hot stone aromatherapy back massage and a rose quartz crystal facial, and finishes with a soothing scalp massage. The treatment can be upgraded to include hands and feet for an extra touch of luxury. Afterwards, there’s the chance to use the pool and Jacuzzi facilities, as well as the Himalayan salt sauna, steam room, and shower. Before leaving, you can spend time in the relaxation room. If you’re in need of a nap, there are an array of comfy single beds to sleep in, complete with curtain

dividers for genuine ‘away-from-the-world’ time, or some contemporary relaxation pods – suspended from the ceiling and ideal to chill out in. If you’re looking for a quiet chat instead, there are private rooms containing cosy sofas – perfect for group discussions over complimentary cucumber and pineapple water or herbal tea (options include beauty, refresh, relax, or detox). The Spa at The Midland is sophisticated and relaxing, a hidden retreat just off one of the city’s busiest streets – perfect for girly getaways or romantic weekend breaks.

KP AESTHETICS HALE

New medical aesthetics clinic comes to Hale The bright lights and fragrant smells that emanate from beauty counters lure most of us to buy the numerous pots of anti-wrinkle moisturisers and serums on display. Even during the 2008 recession, the beauty sector fared well, as consumers were more than happy to spend money on skin-improving products. Most of us want to look good and, in a bid to ward off the ageing process and look better for our years, we buy into the big brand ads filled with glamour and enviable lifestyles. 44

August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Here's the thing though, every morning, 90% of (mainly) women apply moisturiser and serums – but do they actually work? Khatra Paterson, Medical Aesthetic Nurse, Independent Prescriber and owner of KP Aesthetics, says: “Moisturisers do work in giving temporary relief to dry rough skin but, with continuous use, they actually have an adverse effect.” Moisturisers have a negative response because they switch off the skin’s own hydration mechanism, resulting in a

sensitive, weaker skin and increased signs of ageing. KP Aesthetics owner Khatra Paterson is a highly-regarded nurse with over 29 years’ experience. She is currently working in the aesthetic industry, collaborating with influential doctors and performing thousands of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Khatra not only has an artistic eye, but also the technical ability to improve facial asymmetry and proportions, giving harmony to the face and making people feel good about themselves.

Real Housewives of Cheshire star and local resident Seema went to see Khatra at her clinic in Hale. After suffering with mild adult acne and congested skin for some time, and gaining little relief from her own skincare regime, Seema felt it was time to seek expert help. What skin concerns do you have? I just want results; skin that is healthy and fresher looking – and this is exactly what the ZO range has done for me. My skin has always been very sensitive. I have always had oily skin in certain areas, open pores and spells of mild adult acne. Tell us more about your old skincare routine... As my life is crazy busy, my skin care routine hasn’t been great. I found that my skin was very sensitive to so many products, so I turned to Simple skincare range and had a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising. What results were you getting from the brands you were using? The results were OK to start with, but eventually I felt my skin looked very dull and tired. My pores were very clogged and I had a mild form of acne on the sides of my cheeks. You do a lot of work in front of the camera, did you have concerns about how you’d be perceived by viewers? I would like to think that being in the public eye should be about your talent, drive and skill set, but I work in the fashion industry, which is all about your appearance and lifestyle. There is nothing worse than feeling conscious when you have a bad day with your skin and end up wearing more makeup to cover the breakouts. To be honest, it made my skin worse. More and more people are taking care of their skin and bodies. I am almost 46 years old and have never had a great skin regime due to my hectic work life, so it’s only since I started using ZO products that I can see a huge difference. What's important to you when choosing a skincare product?

I look for products that deal with correcting and improving skin tone and texture, and tackle breakouts, open pores and congested skin... I have spent so much over the years on a variety of cleansers, moisturisers, day serums, night serums – the list is endless! I just want results; skin that is healthy and fresher looking – and this is exactly what the ZO range has done for me. Khatra prescribed ZO, which has made a massive difference to my skin texture, tone and general skin health. With a break in my filming schedule recently, Khatra also carried out a 30% pHformula TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel, which has brightened my skin even more, so now I feel confident having make-up free days, with no breakouts! About adult acne “Research has shown that about 80% of women suffer with adult acne,” reveals Khatra, “so it's really important to manage the excessive sebum production that causes the condition, otherwise, left untreated, it can lead to rosacea, an inflammatory disorder. Applying moisturisers on skin that is already overproducing its own natural oils only leads to an increase in acne breakouts. “ZO skincare is a bespoke programme of ZO Medical products, which is a therapeutic range to manage skin disorders along with ZO Health products, which maintain the therapeutic results, created by the world renowned dermatologist Dr Zein Obagj. “Peels are a good addition to skincare, as they help to thin down the top layer of skin (stratum corneum), allowing skincare products to penetrate to the cellular level easier. “However, black and Asian skin needs to be carefully managed, as there is a risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation with high concentrated peels. The advantages of using pHformula 30% TCA peel over traditional TCAs is the superior formulation, which results in greater benefits deep in the skin tissues, less trauma on the surface of the skin, and a reduction in the risk of pigmentation, so it’s great for all skin types.”

The Perfect Sole by Margaret Dabbs London ‘It’s like heaven for the feet’ Lisa Niven, Vogue Beauty Editor

Margaret Dabbs London is a globally recognised brand specialising in hand and foot products, and manicure and pedicure treatments. These provide long-lasting anti-ageing for both men and women, fusing medical needs with beauty, look and feel. Margaret Dabbs London's philosophy is simple – your hands and feet are very important to your well-being, give them the respect which both you and they deserve. Margaret Dabbs London's fabulous hands and feet products are sold at some of the UK's most iconic retailers, and its signature treatments are performed at many of the world’s leading hotels, spas and resorts. The company operates four clinics in London as well as in Cheltenham, Harrogate and Dubai. Of course, the London clinics in particular host many celebrity clients, be they pop stars, politicians, sports personalities or Harley Street medics. New openings are planned for Guildford, Glasgow and Qatar. Here in the North West, Margaret Dabbs London can be found in Alderley Edge in Cheshire, where I met the aptly named ‘Queen of Feet’… You qualified as a podiatrist and started developing products as well as looking after feet. What was it that inspired you? I was constantly being asked to recommend products, however, the available beauty

products for the feet did not work as treatments, and the remedies were often unpleasant to use. I therefore sourced ingredients from around the world and mixed formulations, each tasked with treating a specific and common foot ailment. I wanted products which met patients' needs and demands, but which had a scent, look and feel quite unlike anything else. Products had to be beautifying and luxurious, but still exceptionally effective as treatments. Feet go through the ageing process, soft tissues become lax, and gait-related changes mean that secondary skin disturbances, such as corns, hard skin and bunions, appear. Our Hydrating Foot Lotion prevents hard skin build-up. If you have cracked skin, our Intensive Treatment Foot Oil is excellent and, for fungal infections, our Foot Hygiene Cream works wonders. Why is it so important that we look after our feet? We only get one pair, and all the beauty products in the world won’t help your face if your feet hurt. Ailments in the feet run up the body and can affect your skeletal structure, causing other problems, such as knee and hip pain.

One of the key ingredients in your products is emu oil. How did you come to discover its potency? I was very aware of patients who are diabetic as well as of other high-risk patients, and came across emu oil, which is completely organic and a natural by-product made up of essential fatty acids, which are easily absorbed by the skin. This really is our super-ingredient. It has incredible healing properties, is used for bone and joint inflammation, and has vast hydration and cosmetic advantages. Emu oil has been used for over 40,000 years. How does it help our feet? It’s transdermal and penetrates the skin’s layers. The oil relieves bone and joint inflammation in the foot's 26 bones, which is a huge plus. You’re famed for your medical pedicures. What do they involve? They are our signature treatment and, performed by a qualified podiatrist, are a thorough overhaul of the feet. They will leave you feeling like you’re walking on air, with feet which look and feel brand new. They are also a great diagnostic tool for future treatments, for example, laser therapy for fungal nails and lower leg laser therapy (LLT). How long does the pedicure take? Approximately 45 minutes.

DR JOHN FOX PATRICK CLAFFEY Owner of Rxgym, West Didsbury Alternatively, the day after the night before, I recommend counterbalancing the total calorie intake of alcohol by doing a light workout – this will flush the alcohol out of your system so, when you go back to your normal programme the following day, you won’t be underperforming. How do I get rid of my bingo wings? Work target areas alongside burning body fat. Target the triceps as well as the biceps. Try these four exercises: 1) Box dips 2) Bicep curls 3) Lying down triceps extensions 4) Press-ups Should I cut alcohol out when I’m training? Alcohol can slow your performance down and, in turn, slow your progression. Alcohol effects the muscles by dehydrating the body, removing valuable nutrients, and it can be high in calories. You need to be hydrated when you exercise to maintain the flow of blood through your body, which is essential for circulating oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. So, in short, try and cut it out.

The day after training, I always have bad aches and pains. Any advice? Take a recovery shake to replenish nutrients, stretch and complete mobility exercises to condition the muscle. Conditioning your muscle ready to go again is the key to achieving results. Time and time again, I see people skip warm-ups or cooldowns; completing them will help with those aches and pains the next day. I’m bored of using the same machines, sets and reps. Going through the same repetitive routine is a quick way to get bored and stall results. A strength and conditioning workout should be constantly varied by alternating exercises or the acute variables like sets, reps and rest times.

A Consultant Clinical Psychologist across both independent and NHS services since 2002, Dr John Fox is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and has been an active researcher in eating disorders and mental health, with over 60 research papers and one edited book. WHAT ARE EATING DISORDERS? Eating disorders are a rare but serious mental health conditions. There are three main types of eating disorders; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is hallmarked by being severely underweight, whilst Bulimia Nervosa (BN) occurs in people who are normal weight. BN is associated with episodes of bingeing and vomiting, whilst binge eating disorder is indicated by episodes of bingeing without any attempts to remove food afterwards (e.g. vomiting). All of these disorders are associated with poor body image. WHAT ARE THE BEST TREATMENTS FOR EATING DISORDERS? For people who have not had treatment before, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the best approach. It is practical, as it focuses on thoughts and behaviours around food and body shape. Research has shown that it has the best efficacy, but it does not suit everyone. In my experience, another good option is cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), as it helps with the underlying issues, as well as the difficulties with food/body shape. WHAT IS COGNITIVE ANALYTIC THERAPY (CAT)? CAT is a form of therapy that differs from other established therapies, such as CBT. It looks at the relationships in a person’s life (i.e. with themselves and others) and investigates the origins of these experiences, often from childhood and early life. It is non-judging/blaming approach and a good treatment for eating disorders, depression and relationship difficulties.

YOuR HEALTH, YOuR DECISION Patient choice is The Manchester Vein Clinic’s priority, as is enabling patients to make an informed decision regarding their treatment. The clinic offers a vein health check by an in-house vascular scientist and practitioner, complete with a bespoke report and an informal, no-obligation discussion about effective treatments. PRIVATE FACILITIES WITHIN YOuR LOCALITY The Altrincham-based clinic is discreetly located (providing privacy for patients) and has a large choice of appointments, including evenings and weekends. With a dedicated 24-hour phone line, they are only a call away and happy to help. Furthermore, post-treatment, each patient is contacted via telephone for a friendly chat to see how they are doing. DIAGNOSIS IS EASY – AND FREE “The best way to diagnose varicose veins is by a vascular ultrasound scan,” says Mr Gurdeep Jandu, Manchester Vein Clinic Manager, Vascular Scientist and Practitioner, who is highly experienced in vascular ultrasound and has worked at several NHS and private hospitals in the North West. “Furthermore, those who attend the clinic’s forthcoming Patient Event will be scanned for free. The scan is a simple vein health check; gel is placed on the skin and a probe run over the skin at the groin and behind the knee as well as over visual veins that bother you. It’s painless and provides a ‘mini map’ of the veins, enabling us to determine the best treatment options for you. From here, we

THE PROBLEM WITH VEINS… Varicose veins are typically blue or purple and located on the legs. Whilst most are harmless and symptom-free, some (if left untreated) can lead to swelling, burning, itching, venous eczema and even ulcers. They are caused when the valves within superficial veins (the smaller veins in your legs) stop functioning properly, causing them to become more prominent at the surface of the skin and, in time, trigger the symptoms mentioned above. Thread or spider veins are clusters of tiny blood vessels (resembling spiders’ webs) that form near the skin’s surface. Like the varicose variety, they are caused by malfunctioning superficial veins and, apart from their unsightly appearance, often have little physical impact. Ageing, long periods of sitting or standing, pregnancy and family history are just some of the risk factors, but the good news is, their removal has no impact whatsoever on your body or overall blood circulation. can diagnose how your veins are, how they work, as well as discuss your possible options and likely treatment costs before seeing our surgeons.”

Mr Gurdeep Jandu, Manchester Vein Clinic Manager and Mr Damian Kelleher, Vascular Surgeon

TREATMENT OPTIONS High-tech, minimally-invasive treatments mean there’ll be no need to take time off work or rest up post-procedure. VenaSealTM glue and radiofrequency ablation are for larger veins and are completed under local anaesthetic. Other treatments that are available are foam sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy and cosmetic laser treatments, which tackle thread/spider veins as well as acne scarring, rosacea and mole removal. “All of our treatments are clinically proven to give results,” says Mr Jandu. The clinic also offers traditional varicose vein surgery. FREE CONSuLTATION The clinic offers a FREE Patient Event from time to time, where everyone receives a free consultation (including a vein health check scan) with a clinical vascular practitioner.

NO GP REFERRAL IS REquIRED. Should one of the clinic’s vascular practitioners decide treatment is required, they will recommend an appointment with one of the clinic’s surgeons. This will include a fullydetailed ultrasound scan and mapping of all veins in your legs, the report from which is then used by the vascular surgeon to produce a tailor-made treatment plan. Those who attend the Patient Event, and book a consultation with a surgeon, will receive a 10% discount. Even better, you can pace how you pay, by taking advantage of The Manchester Vein Clinic’s 0% interest finance option. “There’s no obligation and no pressure,” adds Mr Jandu, “that’s the clinic’s policy. So, if you want to look better, feel better and gain your confidence back, attend one of our events. We look forward to helping you live pain free, regain your self-esteem and say bye-bye to veins.”

ANN JOHNSON MBE Shedding light on dementia

If there’s anyone qualified to shed light on dementia, it’s Sunrise of Hale Barns’ distinguished resident, Ann Johnson MBE. Perky, positive, witty and utterly upfront, dementia ambassador Ann has one mission – to reduce fears and dispel taboos around the condition her late father was diagnosed with aged 57, and she herself had confirmed in October 2005 at just 52. Only two months before, Ann, a former nursing sister at Wythenshawe and Manchester Royal eye hospitals, had taken voluntary retirement after 25 years tutoring nurses at Manchester University. Her comprehensive experience gives her personal and professional insight into dementia, the umbrella term for Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. Understandably, Anne’s apprehensive of what lies ahead, but adds: “Don’t be scared of the word ‘dementia’ – it’s just a word. Don’t be scared of me – just be with me, love me and I’ll thrive. Yes, I have bad days, and hide away to weep. Yes, I’ve seen myself disappearing over the last 12 years. But worrying is pointless. Basically, when I lose it – I lose it. Meanwhile, there’s life after diagnosis. I have my faith to help me.”

Ann’s long-term memory is intact. Alongside her short-term memory loss are visual-spatial problems – seeing items but being unable to name them. No longer able to knit, retain TV storylines, count money or read, she can still hop on the bus alone every day to Altrincham. It’s where her civil servant father had settled his family, and at her late mother’s request, where Ann lived before moving into Sunrise of Hale Barns seven years ago. “With dementia, you must live your life as best you can,” asserts Ann. “I’m still me. I give dementia talks nationwide, and often flaunt my illness to drive my points home. Mental health is so misunderstood, some people actually think you can catch it!” Her public profile emerged in 2010, when Ann, accustomed to public speaking, represented the Alzheimer’s Society on BBC national radio and BBC Breakfast. Her reputation for openness, approachability and clarity spread. Accompanied by a close friend, whose daughters Ann had taught, she regularly delivers her 30-minute address across the country, taking questions from the floor. It’s her lifeblood alongside her strong Christian faith and friendships. In 2012, Ann’s efforts were further rewarded with an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bolton, which she regards as a

freebie – an honour gained without the hard academic slog. It’s the frequency of forgetfulness which differentiates dementia from poor memory. Ann realised, like her father, she was continually forgetting to take her medication. But contrary to her own advice, she waited a year to visit the doctor. “I tell everyone to go at their first concern,” admits Ann. “You’ll be referred to a memory clinic and in safe hands. It’s vital to know how to access the support out there – there’s loads.” Ann eventually made it to the surgery in December 2004, saw the memory nurse the following month, and the diagnostic process was set in motion. Nowadays, Ann’s outreach work sees her addressing 200-strong audiences, making TV appearances, and charming everyone with her humour, humility and first-hand information. Ever grateful for her wonderful parents, her vocational career and the opportunity to spread the word, she remains an inspiration and example of unshakeable positivity to everyone who encounters her. Grow your own

STYLE It’s not been a good month at Muck Manor No Siree. Who would have thought that growing your own could be so stressful?

I

t all started with the broad beans going on strike following sizeist taunts from the skinny leeks. Dissent then swiftly spread to my old Brexiteer English apple tree, which refused to allow French beans to grow in the same garden. Next up, the dwarf green curled kale ceased curling after a flurry of insults from the big boy toms. Then, my too-cool-for-school cucumbers demanded they be allowed to hang out with the uber-trendy stonehead cabbages, whilst the King Edward spuds were not amused to be planted near their mother’s Victoria plum tree. On top of all of that, my remaining vegetables then got hacked off

with all the boasting from Lord Muck’s golden balls turnips. I tell you, it’s enough to drive a lady to drink. In fact, things got so bad, that I had to call in ACAS’s Veggie Dispute Expert. Although hopes of him sorting the dispute out quick smart seem to have been dashed, as I’ve just spotted him pocketing a wad of notes and heading off to the Swiss chard for some banking advice. Thankfully, Lady Muck Senior has come to the rescue, assuring me that crop rotation is the solution, not only to warring factions, but also to keeping my plants healthy year after year. The basic principle of crop

So, how do experts group veggie crops? Group 1: Group 2: Group 3: Group 4:

Peas and beans (legumes) Kale, broccoli, sprouts, radishes, swedes and cauliflowers (brassicas) Onions, garlic and leeks (alliums) Carrots, potatoes, beetroots and parsnips (roots)

rotation is simple: grow vegetables with similar needs together, then rotate them around your veggie beds and garden year to year. Why? Well, if you keep growing the same crops in the same spot, soil-borne pests and diseases, which prey on that particular crop, will build up. Also, a repeated crop will deplete the nutrient levels in the soil very quickly because, year after year, it will require the same nutrients for its growth. Don’t worry about your fruit and herbs though, they don’t need to be rotated, as they are classed as a permanent crop. Just remember to feed them each spring!

Here’s how a 4-year crop rotation would look:

Area 1: Area 2: Area 3: Area 4:

Year one

Year two

Year three

Year four

Legumes Brassicas Alliums Roots

Brassicas Alliums Roots Legumes

Alliums Roots Legumes Brassicas

Roots Legumes Brassicas Alliums

Then, in year five, your legumes would be back in Area 1, brassicas in Area 2, alliums in Area 3, and roots in Area 4. Pretty nifty, eh? I, for one, am going to have a go at this crop rotation lark, in the hope that I’ll never have to involve ACAS again. And, as for your lettuces, courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes, don’t worry, they can be slotted in wherever you have space. Right, must dash, got to calm down my filthy rich, aristocratic shallots, who are anxious about the EU’s Tax Avoidance crackdown… August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

With Spanish tapas invasions happening all over the UK, and the consumer love for Spanish cuisine rising, Evuna are excited to launch their third restaurant in the heart of Knutsford in Cheshire this summer Restaurant founder and wine expert Jane Dowler buys direct from vineyards in Spain and has been importing some of the best and lesser known wines since Evuna Deansgate opened in 2003, resulting in a boutique Spanish wine list that’s packed with varietals you won’t find anywhere else. Like its Manchester counterparts, the Knutsford branch will be hosting regular wine tasting sessions and changing its monthly wine focus from regions such as Catalunya, Galicia, Rioja or Navarra. These are offered alongside monthly food specials, created by Evuna’s Spanish chefs, which are based on authentic dishes from that particular region. August focused on Rías Baixas in Galicia, and kicked off at Deansgate with an evening in the company of winemaker of Bodegas Pazo do Mar (Albariño), Spain’s most drinkable white, and guests enjoyed a tasting of eight wines.

Four things to discover about the wines of RÍAS BAIXAS… GREEN – often called Green Spain on account of the high rainfall, cool climate and, thus, verdant landscape. Such a climate creates the best conditions for producing elegant whites.

Albariño is available to buy and take home from any Evuna: Colleita de Martis – £11.50 Santiago Roma – £12.50 Coral Do Mar – £14 Veiga de Princesa – £18

GRANITE – is the local stone, and granite posts are used to trail the vines from ‘pergola’ style. The granite absorbs heat during the day and releases it during the cool of the night, ensuring the grapes don’t overripen. GRAPE – the main grape variety is Albariño, which represents 95% of all varieties. A grape packing the punch of a Sauvignon blanc coupled with a softness of Viognier. GREAT with food! Perfect for pairing with BBQ seafood this summer.

ASHA’S

THE MIDLAND

RANDALL & AUBIN

Manchester

Manchester

Manchester

Indian legend Asha Bhosle has been one of Bollywood's leading playback singers for seven decades, providing the singing voice for actresses in more than 1,000 films. She is in the Guinness World Records as the world's most prolific recording artist. She was also the muse for British band Cornershop, who paid tribute to her with their 1997 hit single Brimful of Asha. Oh, and Asha’s, the £2m restaurant, is named after her too. This 6,000 sq ft eatery has introduced Bolli Bites, where diners can pick four dishes for £20. With the casual diner in mind, the lower bar provides informal dining with a Bolli Bellini Bar. After a couple of Bolli Bellinis, we couldn’t resist sampling eight tasters for £40: Venison Cocktail Samosas, tender venison mince in spices; Chicken Malai Kebabs, flavoured with cardamom and a choice of sauces, including a fabulous apple sauce; the Seafood Seek, finely chopped fish and prawns; and the Kadak Seek, minced lamb seasoned with spices. An Asha recommendation, Keema Fries, was our absolute favourite and comprised mincemeat cooked with spices, served on a bed of hand-cut chips and topped with mild cheddar. Manchester is the tenth Asha’s to open its doors around the world and will not disappoint.

Inside the grand building that is The Midland, right in the heart of Manchester, you’ll find the stunning Afternoon Tea Room – from whose windows you can observe the hustle and bustle of city life and, of course, enjoy Royal Afternoon Tea. A step up from your traditional afternoon tea, the ‘Royal’ serves up a glass of cool champagne alongside an exciting array of finger sandwiches, cakes, tea and scones. The selection of deliciously elegant sandwiches we enjoyed, included: Free Range Duck Egg on a Brioche Bun; Honeybaked Gammon and Mustard; English Cucumber with Gin and Apple Chutney; Chicken and Mushroom; and, our personal favourite, Prawn and Crayfish on Spinach Bread. Beautifully decorated cakes and scones were also on the menu, the latter available in sultana or lemon and pistachio flavours as well as plain. The list of teas was endless – from conventional Breakfast to more unusual brews. We opted for White Elixir; known for its slimming and beautifying properties, it was an obvious choice! I’m rarely satisfied by an afternoon tea, but this was something entirely different – filling, flavoursome, and – with added bubbles – wonderfully fancy.

It’s not often that a restaurant becomes the talk of the town and a ‘must go’, but Randall & Aubin has certainly fulfilled both. Established as a butcher’s shop in 1911, selling only the best produce and quickly becoming one of the finest butchers in town. For the past 20 years, the celebrated and much-loved restaurant continues in that same tradition of excellence; serving the freshest seafood and rotisserie meats, and using only premium ingredients from carefully selected and, where possible, local suppliers. The majority of the meats are either grilled or cooked on the rotisserie to make them as succulent as possible. The approach to dining at Randall & Aubin is ‘everything for everyone’ and serving hearty, premium dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere; honest food and honest cooking, celebrating premium ingredients and cooking them well. Everything is made from scratch using traditional methods. Must-try dishes include: Grilled Lobster roasted with Garlic Butter; slow spit-roast Leg of Aubrey Allen Lamb served with Roast Onions and Amalfi Butter and Chargrilled Prime Beef Rib-eye with Peppercorn Sauce

ODDFELLOWS ON THE PARK

West Didsbury

Opulence, grandeur and decadence – the three words that come to mind as you walk through the door of this newly renovated hotel in Bruntwood Park. Oddfellows on the Park is a sympathetically restored building and is now home to a hotel, a beautiful terrace, a bar and a restaurant called The Galloping Major. The restaurant is impressive; a beautifully hand-painted original ceiling and impressive woodwork making for a lavish environment. The à la carte menu is notable. We started with Venison Carpaccio, complete with pickled mushroom, mushroom purée and crispy shallots – a true taste sensation, which was beautifully presented and appeared almost too pretty to eat. We followed with Lamb Rump, served with Jersey new potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli and caper berry jam. This quintessentially British dish was cooked to perfection. Our waiter matched the wines to each course perfectly, and our final course of White Chocolate Panna Cotta and Passionfruit Curd was the faultless finale. We then retreated to the bar, where Kevin, the very knowledgeable barman, treated us to one of the many gins available. The Galloping Major, and its beautiful surroundings, come highly recommended as a special occasion treat.

Thriving hub MediaCityUK is becoming the place to see and be seen. As the media powerhouses expand, so does the bar and restaurant scene. Members’ club On The 7th, part of the Eclectic Hotels collection, is a trendy, stylish place and, boasting extensive cocktail and wine lists, is the perfect place for some after-work drinks or a lovely lunch. We visited at lunchtime and enjoyed a Sipsmith Gin and Tonic and a mouth-watering Philly Cheese Steak Baguette – oh-so-tasty and moreish, and combining shredded beef, Swiss cheese, onions and peppers. Even without a starter, I couldn’t finish it. I have to admit, I did accompany said baguette with Red Onion and Tomato Salad and some Sweet Potato Fries… how can you not?

Sheffield-based Proove are on the move – opening their second restaurant on the fashionable Burton Road.

As a venue, On The 7th is pretty quirky, even boasting its own private cinema screen. You can relax in an armchair and watch your favourite film whilst sipping on a refreshing glass of wine. If you’re in MediaCityUK, seek this place out… and see how many visiting celebrities you can spot.

This simple, rustic restaurant is charming, appealing and has a very independent feel. You can’t help but be bowled over by the aroma as soon as you walk in. The wood-fired pizza oven dominates the space and the open kitchen is impressive. Proove are pizza specialists and, being a fan of pizza, I was excited to try the menu. I started with a vast Bruschetta, layered with buffalo mozzarella and rocket, and topped with roasted mushrooms and Truffle and garlic-infused olive oil. The starter could have easily been a main dish – it was huge. I spotted the pizza before it got to me – absolutely massive! This place is unbelievable value for money. I went for the San Daniele, a tomato-based pizza with prosciutto, fresh rocket and shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano. The size of the pizza was extraordinary, as was the taste. I’ve eaten a lot of pizza in my time, but this has got to be the finest I’ve tried. A brilliant addition to Burton Road, these guys are ones to watch.

FOX

You can be forgiven a sense of déjà vu when you cross the threshold of Danny Fox's £1m restaurant in Hale Barns

By Ray King | Photography Mike Browne

For there are elements of some of the most popular and successful restaurant brands launched in and around Manchester over the last 25 years. Perhaps that's not surprising since he played a major role in their development, not least the creation of the game-changing Living Room with Tim Bacon and Jeremy Roberts. But Fox the restaurant is Danny's own personal concept... and it's big. There are 120 covers arranged as booths, and free standing-tables and stools along the impressive bar and counter, which sits in front of the large open-theatre kitchen. There are two essential pieces of kit inside the kitchen - a wood-burning pizza oven and an open-fire grill. Herein defines the restaurant's concept and its food. Danny, a founding director of Living Ventures, knows his stuff. He knows what people enjoy, and strives to give them exactly that. It's a philosophy that's difficult to argue with. Central to the Fox menu is a list of woodfired sourdough pizza choices and, tempted

as we were by them during our lunchtime visit, the siren call of the barbecued meat and fish dishes won us over. So we shared a Sourdough Garlic Bread appetiser essentially a seasoned pizza base. So, what does 36 hours of dough proofing, gluten and starch breakdown, by hard-working enzymes produce. Answer: a light, thin crispy base, chewy in parts but blistered and crackled in others from the heat of the oven. Next time, definitely.

This was perhaps even more the case with my main course, a 10oz rib-eye steak cooked on the wood and charcoal-fired grill; tender, juicy and flavoursome, nuanced with lovely smoky notes. Like all the steaks at Fox, the rib-eye was locally sourced in Cheshire and Shropshire from Black Angus cattle, aged 35 days. It arrived spot-on medium rare (as ordered) and served simply with my choice of béarnaise sauce and triple-cooked chips.

For my starter proper, I chose Prawns Pil Pil comprising three varieties of crustaceans; king prawns, Atlantic prawns and intensely flavoursome Morecambe Bay shimps, each luxuriating in olive oil flavoured with garlic, lemon, paprika and a well-judged heat of chilli. I mopped up every delicious drop with crusty sourdough. Mrs K had superbly creamy Burrata Mozzarella served with a bitter-sweet Mediterranean marriage of rocket, figs and beetroot dressed with honey and balsamic. Simple? Yes. Familiar? Certainly. But these are classic flavour combinations that have nothing to do with the latest foodie fads and fashions but, instead, owe everything to great ingredients.

Mrs K chose Monkfish, King Prawn and Scallop Skewers - no hiding place for mediocre ingredients here - served with roasted pepper, grilled broccoli, quinoa and lemon olive oil. The fish and shellfish were perfectly cooked; moist and fleshy, they made for the perfect summer dish. We rounded off by sharing an exemplary Lemon Tart with Lemon Mascarpone Cream. From a well-chosen wine list with plenty of choice by the glass, we drank a quaffable, fruity Australian Chardonnay and the Argentine Malbec was a perfect partner for the steak. Mr Fox has got it sorted: food you want to eat in a place you want to go.

Simon Rimmer’s Barbecue Tips

Simon is cooking on a Weber Genesis II lx E-440 GBS Gas Barbecue

Salutions Publications | FOOD & DRINK

Chef Simon Rimmer attacks life with gusto. Positivity simply gushes out of him – and what he’s most excited about at the moment is vegetables. We are talking barbecuing, and he responds instantly to my suggestion that most of us don’t barbie enough veg: “Exactly, exactly!” he exclaims. “The problem is that barbecuing vegetables is harder than just slapping down some sausages – but it’s harder to cook good vegetarian food in the kitchen, so that’s not a surprise.” I ask him for some helpful tips, and he’s more than happy to oblige: “It’s incredibly simple to improve the flavour of vegetables – just use a simple marinade of olive oil, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper. Place the vegetables in the marinade for just 20 minutes, and the flavours will be transformed. Or try natural yoghurt mixed with cayenne, garam masala and lime juice, or yoghurt, cumin, coriander, paprika, garlic and ginger. Use that with some big field mushrooms, and you’ve almost got a veggie tikka in an instant. Then go on to olive oil with dry mustard and vinegars; experiment with different oils and vinegars until you find the one you like best.

By Jay Fagan

In collaboration with Weber Barbecues, Simon Rimmer is the man to turn to for some general tips about the art of the outdoor cooking. But the answers are not what you might expect…

But keep it simple, so the flavours are augmented not overwhelmed.” Like me, Simon is surprised but delighted at the sudden rise in popularity of the humble cauliflower: “You’re right, it is everywhere now. The thing is, if you roast a whole cauliflower, it changes completely. It’s not that dull, grey thing we had round at our nan’s – it’s something beyond perfect. Roast it whole with the stalks on.” Simon has had an amazing career – or, more correctly, two careers. He founded Greens restaurant in Didsbury in 1990, despite having trained and worked as a freelance textile designer. The way he tells it, the switch from cloth to cuisine was more or less immediate, and it’s proved to be incredibly successful. He now has a small empire of pubs and restaurants reaching as far as Dubai. But it all started with Greens, and you feel that’s where his heart belongs. “We are going through a huge reemergence of vegetarian eating,” explains Simon, “much of it is down to ‘flexitarians’. Many more people are turning to not having meat three of four days a week – but they expect the same quality and variety of flavours as they do on the meat days.”

cook better, but the main thing is, they are designed to be used and left outdoors. I have a friend in the States who uses his Weber even if the temperature is minus 45! They have always been my barbecue of choice.”

Which brings us to his third career as an incredibly versatile and popular television chef and author. There seem to be so many cooking shows and books now. What’s left? Is there anything new to be done and what would he love to turn his hand to? Simon jumps in with his trademark enthusiasm: “What I’d love to do is a show that really gets into vegetarian cooking in depth. At the moment, you get the feeling of ‘it’s ok there’ll be something for you carnivores in a few minutes’, but that’s just not right. How I see it is me driving an open-top Ford Mustang down the West Coast of California, visiting amazing producers and cooking amazing food.” It’s diversity that drives him on: “We have a great and varied portfolio now and that’s what I love. I’m passionate about and very, very involved in everything I do. But Greens is where it all started, and we keep refining that product. We keep changing and refreshing, and it’s as big a challenge now as it ever has been.”

The best solution is to use a thermometer and check the internal temperature of the meat – the new Weber iGrill is perfect and even has a Bluetooth connection to your phone’s Weber app, so you don’t even need to be at the barbecue to know when your meat is cooked to perfection.

Nipa Thai: Royal Lancaster London It’s not often you find a hidden gem that’s worth all the plaudits it receives. Located on the first floor of the Royal Lancaster London, you’ll find Nipa Thai. A warm, traditional Thai greeting awaits and the fabulous Raffles-like decor sets a scene that even King Mongkut would applaud. A succinct menu offers a fair selection of meats and seafood whilst professional, attentive staff provide efficient service in regal surroundings, complete with unrivalled views across Hyde Park. The restaurant is renowned for being one of London’s best Thai establishments using original Thai ingredients. Nipa Thai offers a holistic experience; from the allfemale Thai kitchen team to the smell of essential lemongrass oil gently permeating the restaurant. Nipa Thai’s authentic cuisine has received the prestigious Thai Select certification from the Thai government – an accolade presented to Thai restaurants proven to have achieved the highest standards of quality. The 55-seat restaurant features a teak-panelled interior with traditional Thai furnishings, and ornate decorations crafted in Thailand. The authentic decor complements the cuisine, which is served by Thai staff.

The restaurant delivers outstanding traditional cuisine that combines hot spices with mild and sweet flavours, offering a mix of dishes from Thailand’s central region. Each of the dishes is prepared according to traditional recipes by Head Chef Sanguan Parr and her dedicated team. We shared the Ruam Mitr – a selection of chef’s special Thai starters that includes chicken satay, prawn parcels, fish cakes and spring rolls (£24). For mains, B chose the Kaeng Kiew Warn, a vibrant chicken and Thai aubergine in a spicy green coconut curry (£16). I opted for the Phad Kra Prao Koong, which combined stir-fried prawns with chillies and basil leaves (£22). We shared the Phad Phak Mitr (mixed vegetables, £10) and Kao Phad Khai (egg fried rice, £4). The restaurant also has two fantastic offerings: THAI WINE PAIRED SET MENuS Each menu features a selection of Head Chef Sanguan Parr’s speciality Thai dishes, such as Keaw Nam Koong (prawn dumpling consommé with bean sprouts, spring onions, coriander and iceberg lettuce).

The four award-winning wines chosen to highlight the dishes’ flavours are from Monsoon Valley’s prestigious Hua Hin Hills Vineyard. Including wine pairings, the menus are priced at £49, £52 and £65. PRE–THEATRE NOK KHAMIN MENu The Nok Khamin Menu is served from 5pm to 6.30pm and priced at £23 per person. With London’s West End and the Royal Albert Hall just a short distance from the hotel, the menu provides the perfect pre-theatre or early dinner. The Early Bird Menu is served daily and includes a starter, main and glass of house wine or Singha beer. The menu features Thai favourites, such as Thai Green Curry (Kaeng Kiew Warn Puk), Spring Rolls with Glass Noodles (Por Pia Thod), and Thai Chicken Satay. An à la carte dinner would cost approximately £40 for a three-course meal with wine. Unfortunately, we couldn’t try the Thai desserts, such as Caramel Lychees (caramel delice with a crunchy lychee centre, chilli and pineapple carpaccio with salted caramel ice cream), but that gives us the perfect excuse to revisit on our next trip to the city.

Manchester Muslim charity raises over £170,000 for UK projects during Ramadan times the amount of everyone in Greater Manchester – this Ramadan, when our Muslim employees were abstaining from food and water, we were giving food and water to non-Muslims who needed it most.” Human Appeal raised over £10,000 for a project, in partnership with Street Support, to help provide homeless services across Greater Manchester. Street Support is a central online resource around homelessness, which aims to make it easier for people who are homeless to get the help they need. Human Appeal, a Muslim faith-based humanitarian aid charity based in Greater Manchester, has raised nearly £170,000 for British people in need of support and aid during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Whilst most of Human Appeal’s work is overseas in countries such as Somalia, Syria and Yemen, they also do a lot of work in the UK. The beneficiaries include the victims of the Manchester attack, the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, rough sleepers, and other people in need throughout the country. Just prior to the start of Ramadan, Manchester was plunged into tragedy with the terror attack on Manchester Arena, which killed 22. Human Appeal responded with the Muslims for Manchester fund, which has raised over £28,000. All funds collected were for the funeral costs of the victims and medical costs of the survivors. You can still donate to the appeal at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/muslimsformanchester Human Appeal’s CEO Othman Moqbel spoke to us about the project: “When all of us at Human Appeal saw the horrific events of May 22nd, we had to act,” he explains. “That day, our home was in

crisis. We at Human Appeal are Muslims and Mancunians, and our city was in need of help. We wanted the world to know that Manchester’s Muslims stand united and defiant against anyone trying to spread division and hatred amongst Mancunians.” In response to the Grenfell Tower Fire attack, Human Appeal raised over £81,000, plus £31,500 in pledged donations and approximately £5,000 of in kind donations. Human Appeal helped provide water, supplies, cash grants, food, therapists and doctors. Human Appeal staff have also acted as translators for Arabic and Somali survivors. Outside of responses to emergencies, Human Appeal helped raise £10,000 for the Ramadan Kitchen Project. This project provided food to over 400 charities and community groups in Greater Manchester and London. The food donated was used to cook up delicious, nutritious meals for 9,000 local people from homeless centres, children’s lunch and holiday clubs, lunch clubs for the elderly, and refuges for domestic abuse survivors. “8.4 million people are struggling to afford to eat in the UK,” says Othman, “that’s three

Othman hopes the project will go some way to combatting homelessness: “We are hopeful of our partnership with Street Support, who work with rough sleepers in Manchester. With nearly 3,300 people currently homeless in Greater Manchester, there is still much work to do. By working together, I hope we can achieve more to help combat homelessness.” £1,000 was also raised for the Ramadan Cooking Challenge, which saw over 60 volunteers cook 506 meals for disadvantaged London families living in food poverty. Acts of love and generosity, says Othman, are Human Appeal’s answer to hate: “For British Muslims, Ramadan is the most important month of the year and it’s when Muslims are at their most generous. And Human Appeal, as the fastest growing British Muslim charity, is determined to spread its generosity to those in need, here at home. “This Ramadan has seen a lot of tragedy and, here in the UK, we have seen acts of hatred attempting to cause division in our society. We at Human Appeal are British Muslims determined to meet every act of hate with 170,000 acts of love.”

MR DAMIAN KELLEHER

Vascular Surgeon at The Manchester Vein Clinic A highly specialist consultant at The Manchester Vein Clinic who has years of experience working in the NHS and private hospitals in the North West and across the UK.

RICHARD FLEMING

Richard Fleming FCCA, Managing Director of the Ascendis Group, who are a progressive and proactive firm of chartered accountants and business advisors with offices in Wilmslow and Didsbury.

MARGARET DABBS

Margaret Dabbs – Founder of the internationally-recognised chain of clinics specialising in treatments for hands and feet. Her signature range of luxurious products complement the ‘walking on air’ effect.

ASK THE EXPERTS What are varicose veins? Varicose veins are blue or purple nobbly veins on the legs. Whilst some are harmless and symptom-free, many (if left untreated) can lead to swelling, burning, itching, venous eczema and even leg ulcers. They are caused when valves within the veins under the skin stop functioning properly, causing veins to become tortuous (bendy), more prominent, cosmetically unacceptable, and producing the symptoms above. Is this something I can have done on the NHS? NHS patients must be referred by a doctor to a vascular surgeon, but tend to be referred only if the patient has ulcers. Even on the NHS, treatments are very limited, and it will only look to treat the underlying cause if your anatomy is simple, which is not always the case. In some cases, the treatment offered, depending on the type of vein and type of treatment used, may not improve the appearance. Can I self-refer to The Manchester Vein Clinic? Yes, you do not require a referral from a GP or doctor. You are able to contact The Manchester Vein Clinic directly to make an appointment to see a vascular consultant. All treatments are minimally invasive and do not require an overnight stay.

My daughter is due to start school in September, are there any tax-efficient ways of paying her school fees? There are a number of different ways school fees can be provided for in a tax-efficient manner, depending on specific circumstances. For example, are there any grandparents willing to help fund the fees?

Explain your signature Medical Pedicure Our famous Medical Pedicure is performed by a podiatrist, who assesses and addresses all aspects of the feet to completely overhaul them, ensuring long-lasting results for both men and women. It will create a perfect sole, and your feet will look so good!

If grandparents are willing to help Something as simple as an outright gift may be sufficient, but care would need to be taken to ensure that Inheritance Tax (IHT) charges were not triggered. Alternatively, grandparents can set up and fund a trust, which would pay the school fees when necessary. The benefit of this route is that any income generated in the trust is likely to be covered by the grandchild’s personal allowance and therefore not taxable, thus reducing the effective cost by up to 45%. The grandparents are also likely to benefit from Inheritance Tax savings.

What makes your products different? Whilst working as a podiatrist, I felt treatment products weren’t that pleasant, and beauty products were ineffective, so I developed my own range with the key ingredient emu oil. This organic oil is easily absorbed, deeply penetrating, and has significant healing properties and the same PH as water on the skin – an all-round super-ingredient that’s suitable for all skin types and problems.

What about university costs? There are a number of tax-efficient ways in which a parent or grandparent can assist with the costs associated with a child or grandchild going to university. For example, parents setting up a company which then funded the university costs could result in savings of up to 45%.

Why are feet so important? We only get one pair, and even small changes in the health of the skin and nails can contribute to postural and subsequent skeletal issues, for example, with the hips and knees. The benefit of a Medical Pedicure can be immediately felt, and regular visits (every four to six weeks) will ensure that feet stay healthy.

ASK THE EXPERTS What is my magic number? Your magic number is the amount of wealth you must accumulate to fund your chosen lifestyle and make work optional. Knowing your magic number, and how to achieve it through sensible investments and financial planning, may allow you to perhaps retire or slow down earlier. How can you help me work it out? We ask the right questions. We help you work out what is really important to you and your family financially. We can then help you model your financial future using our financial planning and investment expertise. I am selling my business for £3m, is this enough? This depends on your chosen lifestyle; what you want, not just what you need. Many people at this stage often want to ‘upgrade’ their lifestyle and may be accustomed to healthy salaries and business perks. All of this has to be taken into account when working out what £3m really means to you. The Partner Practice represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the Group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the Group’s website at www.sjp.co.uk/products. Are purpose-built care homes more suitable than care homes housed in older properties? They are more suited as they are specifically designed to meet the environmental needs of residents (as it is their home) and, at the same time, ensure the requirements of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) are met. New Care’s point of difference is its ability to acquire land, design, build, maintain and operate the home, which ensures the care facilities provide the desired environment of the more discerning residents, and cater for their social and health needs. Why is it important to learn about every resident? Every resident is individual, so we spend time with each of them and their families to find out about their lives, interests and views. We create individual care plans and provide compassionate, person-centred care, which is enhanced by purposeful and meaningful activities that reflect the interests and abilities of residents. Creating a ‘home from home’, good relationships and a sense of belonging are at the heart of our care facilities. How important is it to recruit the right team? We hand-pick every employee. Making sure you have the right management team in place builds a firm foundation from the start. We look for individuals who naturally have a caring element about them.

What makes a decent Rioja? Good soils, good climate and high technology which is a given in the region of Rioja … But we also need the human touch, the tradition and knowledge that Riojan producers have seen from childhood how their grandfather, uncle, father have a deep relationship with the vines that belonged to family for generations and this shows in the quality of the wine. A great Rioja shows both elegance and drinkability. Is it true that the older the wine, the better it will taste? Short answer no - Wine is subjective, just like tastes in music. There are people who prefer the lighter and fruitier wines, and others who prefer the complexity of older wines. Occasions should play a factor - as those who like complexity may prefer a fresh rose for a BBQ for example. Older wines tend to be more pricey due to the production process. Cava or Prosecco? My favourite is Cava (Brut Nature), which is different to Prosecco. For me, it’s the fine bubbles (caused by the second natural fermentation, which is not used in Prosecco) and beautiful, bright, light colour. This fermentation also gives intense and elegant aromas of yeast and toast in balance with a good fruit.

STOP THIS HAPPENINg TO yOu… The introduction of the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) has finally given homeowners the opportunity to leave up to £1m tax-free to their families on death. However, what seems a simple addition to the Inheritance Tax regulations is actually far more complex than it first looks. Foresight Wealth Strategists have already run a successful series of briefings, highlighting how the Residence Nil Rate Band works to fully benefit from this new allowance. We are delighted to announce our next set of events. We will be running morning sessions at 10:30am and evening sessions at 7:30pm at the following venues: Wednesday 6th September Thursday 14th September

The Bulls Head, Wicker Lane, Hale Barns The Stanneylands, Stanneylands Road, Wilmslow

Demand is again expected to be strong for these events – so early booking is advised. Sessions will last one and a half hours and information packs will be supplied for you to take away. Refreshments will also be provided. Inheritance Tax is pernicious and few people are comfortable in their estate being liable to this tax. Gordon Burns hosts Krypton Challenge for RMCH Broadcasting legend Gordon Burns will host the Krypton Challenge – a version of the Granada TV show that made him a national star – during a gala fundraising dinner for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The event takes place on Saturday 23rd September at the Revolution Gallery at the Museum of Science and Industry, and over 20 teams of five will compete in the fondlyremembered action-packed game show.

By Ray King

Gordon, who hosted The Krypton Factor for 18 years before becoming the popular anchor for BBC North West Tonight, has been a supporter of the hospital since it moved to its present site. He says: "We broadcast a North West Tonight Christmas special from the foyer, and I made a film about the children's cancer ward, which was very moving. The whole experience meant that you can't help being amazed at what the hospital does; the atmosphere is terrific. Getting to know a place like that means that when they ring and ask me to do this or that, I am delighted to do it."

76

Gordon has hosted the Krypton Challenge for charities before – in London for The Princes' Trust and again in Stockport for local homeless charity Wellspring, of which he is a patron. Each time, the format has been adapted to relate to the good cause. Making a diFFerence “It’s an absolute pleasure to be hosting such a special and unique fundraising event,” says Gordon, “and I’m looking forward to seeing the team members' skills being put to the test live in front of an audience! It’s going to be a great night, full of fun and, most importantly, it will help to raise lots of money to make a difference to poorly children in hospital, so I’m really proud to be part of that.” Scott Fletcher MBE, long-time supporter of the hospital and founder of Manchesterbased Cloud Service Provider ANS, the event’s headline sponsor, says: “Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital provides an invaluable service to so many families across the North West. I am proud

to have been able to support them over the years and delighted to be involved in this exciting new Krypton Challenge event. We are looking forward to what promises to be an amazing night for a fantastic cause.” cutting-edge Scan All the money raised will help to fund an important project which supports young patients requiring heart scans at the hospital. RMCH's Paediatric Cardiology Out-patient Department treats up to 200 young patients every week for the diagnosis and management of heart disease. The money will help purchase a brand-new, state-of-the-art echo machine – a cutting edge ultrasound scan that allows clinicians to obtain more accurate images more quickly, and makes the experience far less distressing for young patients. For £2,500 you can enter a team of five into the Krypton Challenge and a table for ten people will be included in your package.

EDUCATION NEWS School playground gets a withington-style makeover And, on a typically overcast Mancunian day, Rosie Barry, Ellie Edwards, Emaan Khan, Lucia Ward and Freya Woolley set to work with paintbrushes in hand, protected from the heavy rain by a pop-up gazebo drafted in to provide shelter. Children and staff at the school watched as the mural took shape, with some pupils making requests for their favourite characters to be included. The result, after several hours of hard work, was this stunning piece of art, which will provide an inspirational play area for many years to come.

Art students from Withington Girls’ School (WGS) have helped to transform the walls of a local primary school with a stunning painted mural. The project, which took place at Haveley Hey Community Primary School in Wythenshawe, was part of WGS’s annual Citizenship Day programme during which girls right across the school participated in a variety of community outreach activities and fundraising events. The mural idea was conceived by two teachers at Haveley Hey, who contacted Withington’s art department after seeing photos of WGS girls painting and decorating school rooms on their trips to the Gambia. With a dull, grey breezeblock wall in their school playground in need of a makeover, the Haveley Hey team asked if there was a possibility of students creating an imaginative woodland scene, incorporating popular early years books, such as Where the Wild Things Are and The Gruffalo, to inspire imaginative play. Five WGS art ambassadors – led by Art Teacher Mrs Julia Johnston – were delighted to volunteer their time as part of Citizenship Day.

Mrs Johnston said that the Haveley Hey mural was the largest scale piece the Lower Sixth group had ever worked on: “As well as showing great talent and an aptitude for mural painting,” said Mrs Johnston, “they also worked superbly well as a team. Creating artwork for an environment where many people have the opportunity to see it is one of the most rewarding aspects of art and design. The girls had a great responsibility to create a lasting, inspirational play area for youngsters for many years to come… perhaps inspiring the next generation of writers, nature-lovers, scientists and, of course, artists!”

Haveley Hey’s playground wall was previously a dull, graffiti-filled structure. What a transformation! After five Withington girls’ School art students put their design and painting talents to good use, gruffalo and friends have transformed the space into a fun and inspiring play area.

Bridget Howard Head of Junior School: Alderley Edge School for Girls

Reading, (W)Riting, (A)Rithmetic... and Technology! At home, in the workplace… technology will be at the centre of our children’s future. The fundamentals of primary education remain true; teaching mathematical concepts that are needed for life, along with good skills in comprehension and the ability to read and write to a high standard. However, technology has evolved and developed at such a rapid speed, that it is our duty to keep abreast of these developments and ensure that, through the education we deliver, we facilitate our pupils to do the same. At primary level, success entails weaving technology into and through skills already taught to enhance the pupils' learning. As Head of the Junior School at Alderley Edge School for Girls, I am passionate that we should take the time and invest the money necessary to keep up with the latest developments in technology, embracing those that will add to our pupils' learning experience whilst maintaining high standards in the traditional elements of their learning.

Our bespoke integrated curriculum already benefits from the use of iPads, but the magic of technology has the potential to bring even more added excitement to our girls’ learning. Superimposing virtual backgrounds or using animated digital backdrops could allow us to transport our girls to outer space or the depths of a rainforest. Use of Augmented Reality would allow a full-sized Celtic roundhouse to appear for the girls to explore – what better way to excite our pupils about the wonders of the world? We are also tapping into help from corporate life. Lawrence Jones, CEO of UKFast, is passionate about business owners supporting education, and we have certainly benefited from our relationship with his apprentices, who run a weekly Coding Club for our girls. This builds on their learning in lessons and, as a result, they are becoming highly proficient. Putting these skills in place during our pupils’ primary years allows them to be built on as they move into secondary school and onto university. It ignites an interest and opens up new avenues for their future – whatever realm they choose, be it technology itself or any other profession, they will have the benefit of these transferable skills firmly embedded in them. As the American philosopher John Dewey said: “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow”. Technology is here to stay, and it is our duty as educators to prepare our pupils for tomorrow’s world. August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Mother-daughter duo steal the show at MhSg bursary ball Saturday 10th June saw Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) host its eighth Bursary Ball at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. Over £22,500 was raised, with all funds going directly to the school’s Pankhurst Bursary Fund. Despite the event being compared by wellknown Key 103 presenter Darren Proctor and television personality Jenny Powell, it was mother and daughter duo Jennifer and Nicola Stockdale from Audenshaw who stole the show. Nicola, a Sixth Form pupil at MHSG has been in receipt of bursary funding since she joined the school aged 11. Currently studying for A Levels in biology, chemistry and economics, Nicola took the opportunity to explain the impact that an MHSG education has had, not just on her academic performance, but her life outside the classroom: “Back in Year 8, we went on a trip to Debdale Outdoor Centre, where we took part in water sports, such as windsurfing and sailing. I enjoyed it so much that I joined the junior club and now, four years later, I am a fully-qualified dinghy instructor, an assistant windsurfing coach, and have been named Manchester Sports Young Volunteer of the Year. Sailing is something I am truly passionate about, and without MHSG, I would never have had the opportunity to step foot in a boat! “In 2014, my father passed away from cancer at the young age of 37. In the time since his death, MHSG has provided constant support for me and my family. There has always been someone I can talk to. During this difficult time, the school bursary fund has supported my mother to make the adjustment to a single wage, allowing me to continue my studies without the fear I would have to leave due to financial pressures.”

Nicola’s mum, Jennifer, commented: “You hear the words ‘teenage parents’ and a very vivid image comes into your head. I was just 17 when Nicola was born and I promised her our family was not going to be just another statistic. “Despite being a young mum, I had a definite sense of the qualities that I wanted to nurture in Nicola; independence, strength and a voice to be heard, and, with that in mind, there was really only one choice for her, MHSG.

bbc news presenter rebecca Fairgrieve, Judith Moritz and rebecca Macphail

“The fees were of course a problem. After many lengthy discussions, tears, interviews and examinations, MHSG made a decision that changed our lives forever; to award Nicola a bursary. “The kindness and generosity of people that have donated to the bursary appeal over the years has meant that Nicola is now in Junior Sixth – with a world of choice and opportunity. I don’t think this would have been possible anywhere but MHSG.” UKFast Managing Director, Jonathan Bowers, was present at the event and was fascinated by Nicola and Jennifer’s speeches:

Lindsay and graham hewitt from raised Floor Solutions.

“We work closely with MHSG as a school in a bid to tackle the widening gender gap across the tech industries,” said Jonathan, whose company is the UK's largest privately-owned hosting provider, “but an event like tonight really brings home to you just how special the school is, the young women it turns out, and the impact it can have on entire families. We’re thrilled to be able to support the bursary appeal.” This September, nine new pupils will join MHSG on bursary places, taking the total of girls attending the school thanks to financial assistance since 2010 to 91.

Being part of a rowing team as half a million spectators roar you on; starring in high-quality dramatic productions; helping to improve access to education for thousands of children in the Gambia; and surviving in wild country as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (for which The Grange is a regional centre) – just a few of the many and varied opportunities we provide. We pride ourselves not only on our excellent academic results – placing us as the top-ranked co-educational independent school in the North West – but on the value added to each pupil as an indication of the quality of a Grange education. This year, on average, Grange pupils achieved over a half a grade better at GCSE and A-level than sophisticated benchmarking data would suggest likely. This academic measure highlights the progress a child makes from the time they start school to the examination grades they achieve during their Grange education.

hair-raising science show for broad oak Primary pupils Pupils at Broad Oak Primary School in East Didsbury enjoyed a hair-raising visit from a bunch of mad scientists during a special class on electricity recently.

National Grid is currently working on refurbishing the overhead power line which runs between substations at Bredbury and Sale, so organised the show to teach children about some interesting aspects of the science behind electricity. During the event, staged by Mad Science, 51 pupils learned about static electricity using a metal ball to show how static could make hair stand on end. They also had the chance to use a Van de Graaff generator to create the electrostatic energy required for the experiment, and learned about chemical luminescence.

And there’s still more to come, as the pupils will be treated to a thrilling bike stunt show from the Extreme Mountain Bike Team at their school.

Summer brings adventure at Stockport grammar From exploring Borneo to ghyll scrambling in Grasmere, Stockport Grammar pupils will return to school refreshed in September following an action-packed summer trips programme.Second Year pupils spent four days in the Lake District embarking on a host of exciting activities, such as canyoning, canoeing, raft building and ghyll scrambling. They were also able to take in the beautiful scenery the area has to offer when they completed an ambitious hike, which saw them climb Heron Pike and Great Rigg. Sixth Formers spent three weeks in Borneo volunteering and exploring the country’s ancient rainforest and unique wildlife as well as completing a scuba diving qualification.

Pupils from all year groups enjoyed a highly successful music tour of the Rhineland in Germany, which included a performance in Cologne Cathedral. The first orchestra, string orchestra, chamber choir, junior chamber choir and chorus also staged traditional concerts at the Pfarrkirche in Zeltingen-Rachtig and Kurpavillon in Bad Münster. Lighter outdoor performances were given at the Stadtfest in Andernach and the Kulturufer festival in Bingen. These featured the concert band, big band, wind orchestra, saxophone quartet, wind quintet, junior chamber choir and chorus.Physics pupils travelled to Geneva in Switzerland to visit CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, home of the Large Hadron Collider.

time capsule gives children of the future a taste of life in 2017 Pupils at Stockport Grammar Junior School filled a time capsule with their favourite toys, books and mementos, and buried it in the school grounds. Boys and girls from Reception to Year Six embarked on the project as part of celebrations to mark the centenary of the school’s move to the Hallam site. In lessons, girls and boys talked about what life was like 100 years ago, and decided they would try and give future pupils a glimpse of life in 2017. Items included school photographs, items of uniform, class timetables, thumbprints, toys, books, newspapers, food wrappers, utility bills, a list of popular children’s names and a selection of current pop songs. To illustrate what life is like at school in 2017, pupils put in a school tea towel, a whole school photograph, a letter from the headmaster, a brochure on the history of Stockport Grammar School, the school

DVD, a school tie and the school teddy bear. Pupils also included diary entries from their favourite school trips and a copy of the school prayer. Headmaster Tim Wheeler helped the children to bury the large capsule in the school grounds. Mrs Neelum Hurst, who

co-ordinated the project, said: “We would like to suggest that the capsule will be opened in 25 years and not reburied again until 2117. We are very proud of our school and wanted to be part of its history and part of the future.” August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Abbey College Manchester: Achieving Success Together

tarting educational life as a small tutorial college back in 1990, Abbey College Manchester has now become a leading independent college in a large, modern, six-storey, well-equipped building in the centre of Manchester with around 220 students. Liz Elam, Principal of the college, provides an insight into the continued success. “Dynamic, exciting, innovative and unique are the words that I would use to describe the learning environment at Abbey College Manchester,” says Liz. “Offering flexible, high-quality, two-year A Level programmes, one-year A Level retakes and one-year GCSE programmes, our academic results are consistently excellent and, each year, around 90% of students gain entry to their first-choice university course and destination. “From September 2017, the college is also going to be offering a Level 3 Combined Studies Programme as an alternative to A Levels. This course is modular, with two subject options and key skills, and will allow students to apply to several universities. The pathways available will cover engineering, science, business, humanities or creative arts. “Our last Independent Schools Inspection Report (ISI, February 2015)

stated the following: ‘The students’ personal development is excellent. They are confident, articulate and sensitive to the needs of others. The college is successful in its aim to guide students to respect and value one another. This is a community with young people from many countries as well as from a variety of backgrounds, faiths and cultures within the city and surrounding area. They are valued and nurtured within an environment where the principal emphasis is that of respect – for people, place and property. Parental responses to the pre-inspection questionnaire comment favourably on their child’s behaviour and confidence and are appreciative of the changes effected by the college. The contribution of the curriculum and extra-curricular provision is excellent. The varied and well-constructed curriculum fully supports the aim of the college to help and guide students to achieve academic success. Class sizes are small and flexibility both in the subjects offered and in the courses available enables programmes of study to be matched to a large degree to the individual ability and needs of students.’ “Our modern building provides an environment conducive to study and, in our small classes, each student can develop their individual aptitudes, aided by a strong

system of tutorial guidance. “Students are offered an academically challenging environment in which all can raise their expectations. At the same time, we treat them as young adults and expect them to adopt a mature and responsible approach to their studies. There is no uniform and teachers are called by their first names. Our learning environment provides an ideal transition from school to university. “We believe that small classes, highquality teaching and a strong tutor system are the key to success. The approach is very personal and means that students are focused on their studies and are given lots of attention from teachers to maximise attainment and fulfil potential. Average class size is seven, and the highest number we ever have in a class is twelve. “We specialise in giving expert help and guidance to students about university courses that will enable them to pursue a future that offer challenge, stimulation and economic security. A programme of mock interviews, one-to-one career and university guidance meetings, and personal statement workshops is offered to enable students to learn how to present themselves with confidence and substance on paper and at interview.”

Debbie Leonard

Head Teacher, The Grange School

Refreshingly upfront, Cumbria-born Head Teacher Debbie Leonard was attracted back north in August 2016 by The Grange School’s academic excellence, its caring ethos, communal values and holistic attitude to education – and she’s determined to spread the word. And why not, this go-getter has been an independent schools’ inspector, maths and PE specialist, national level athlete-come-sportswoman, national league hockey coach par excellence and, since 2010, a 24/7 head. Debbie launched her independent education career at Stockport Grammar School in 1988, and is fully understanding of families’ aspirations and children’s requirements: “The Grange is selective,” explains Debbie. “We can boast Oxbridge entrants, but we’re no ‘cram’ school. Academia is important, but it’s not for everyone. Parents pay for education to get the best for, and out of, their youngsters. Educational

expectations should be realistic and child appropriate. Our ‘value-added’ contribution is helping pupils achieve marks at least half a grade higher than those predicted. By sitting no more than nine GCSEs, there’s time for the art, sport, music and drama activities we expect them to engage in – after all, we have our own theatre and the local community uses it too.” Ship worker’s daughter Debbie is selfmotivated, positive by nature, and driven by intellect, integrity and common sense. Her priority is for The Grange to leave a legacy of grounded and confident – but never arrogant – youngsters, equipped to cope with their lives ahead. She regards character-building strategies as key to success, whether the path is Oxbridge, apprenticeship, college, commerce, agriculture, media, the arts, sports or market trading. No-one should have to apologise for what they really want to do.

“You can educate children to pass exams and motivate them to develop a passion, but teaching them to cope with pressure and challenge, advising them to seize opportunities and take risks, which might entail some failure, is another matter. It’s a form of tough love, which can open new doors and develop real resilience, and we’re here to guide them through.” The Grange was established as a co-ed prep school in semi-rural Hartford, near Northwich, in 1933, opening to secondary pupils in 1978. Today, 250 staff tend an intake of 450 junior and 700 senior school children (aged four to 18) from as far afield as Macclesfield, Chester, Altrincham, Warrington and Nantwich. With plans afoot for a £6.2 million sports hall (encompassing a fitness suite, dance studio, multi-purpose courts and classrooms), and her wonderful Grange School to run, Debbie’s hands are full — and she loves it.

Bowdon historian Joanna Williams Here’s a test for you…

Have you heard of Victorian entrepreneur Abel Heywood? Did you know he was twice appointed Mayor and the city’s third ever Freeman? Were you aware that his casting vote in 1863 helped ensure Manchester Town Hall was built in Albert Square rather than Piccadilly, or that, throughout the construction process, he supervised his brainchild’s progress daily? Of course not! Well, from September, thanks to avid Bowdon historian Joanna Williams, Abel Heywood’s rags-to-riches story, his personal achievements and impact upon this city’s roads, education and hospitals will be revealed in detail in Manchester’s Radical Mayor, her Living Ventures-sponsored book.

By Fay Wertheimer

After 23 years at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, former head of history and mum-of-three Joanna Williams retired from education. Released from the chalkface, she could now revive her lifelong passion for research and immerse herself in a historical biography:

90

“I wanted to write about a 19th century local person who was more or less unknown,” explains Joanna. “The obvious place to find a candidate was in the Town Hall’s records – which is where I came across publisher and newspaper wholesaler Abel Heywood. This incredible man contributed massively to Manchester from 1836 as a 26-year-old police commissioner, and then long term as a councillor until his death in 1893. He was born in Prestwich and raised in notorious Angel Meadow. His pride in his humble beginnings endeared him to the common people. He was also a radical, who spent four months in jail in 1832 for selling The Poor Man’s Guardian. Amazingly, his life has never been fully documented.” Joanna set to work. No longer a teacher, she could set her own deadlines, trawl through old newspapers and press cuttings, and enjoy writing in peace at her kitchen table. History is about people. Facts are the starting point. Whereas teachers are facilitators, helping students distil their own understanding of a given topic, historians

aim to make sense of facts using their own evidence-based interpretation. Their skill lies in using sources to present their case coherently. Joanna adds: History is prone to as many slants as there are historians, each bringing a personal bearing on their topic: “I’m a 21st century, middle-class woman with a university education. I was aware of the challenge in grasping the influences and thoughts of a 19th century working-class, self-educated, self-made man,” concludes Joanna. “I chose a Victorian subject because, despite differences in attitudes to women, religion and class, we are rooted in the Victorian age.” Already planning a biography of suffragist Lydia Becker, Joanna looks forward to the launch of Manchester’s Radical Mayor in September at Living Ventures’ Grand Pacific. Formerly the Manchester Reform Club, it was a regular haunt of founder member and 1881 president – Abel Heywood.

Manchester’s Radical Mayor: Abel Heywood, the Man who Built the Town Hall by Joanna M. Williams is published by The History Press and available to buy in bookstores and online at thehistorypress.co.uk from September 2017, priced £14.99. August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

BODy AND MIND

There’s a new generation of health and wellness gadgets that makes your wristband activity tracker look like something from the Stone Age.

SPIRE Talking of stones, this irresistibly tactile little pebble is smarter than the average rock. Clip it to your underwear or waistband and it not only tracks the usual steps, calories etc. but, most importantly, your breathing. Years of scientific research have shown us that one of the keys to managing the mind as well as the body lies in understanding your breathing. This clever Spire talks to a mobile app that can detect when your breath patterns are showing signs of stress and helps you to calm down. It can also help you learn how your breath relates to your state of mind, and give you guided mindful meditation exercises to overcome stress and anxiety. Interestingly, it can even sync with your phone’s location services and calendar to recognise patterns in your lifestyle, such as places, times of day or activities that relate to your stress – or times when you’re most focused. I’ve been wearing mine for a week and I’m already completely hooked. £129.95, spire.io Lumo Run Similar in size and shape to the Spire is the Lumo Run smart tracker. But while the Spire helps you to chill, this personal running coach does the opposite and whips you into action. Clip it to the back of your waistband and it will measure your form, including steps per minute, changes in velocity, vertical oscillation, and rotary and lateral pelvic movement. The companion app gives you a wealth of data-driven personalisation and is certain to improve your performance. £80, lumobodytech.com

Nokia Thermo I’ve long been a fan of health gadget maker Withings, whose posh Activité activity and sleep tracker I bought when it first came out. I wasn’t the only fan, because along came Nokia and bought the company! Today, its range of high-end health and wellbeing electronics is marketed under the brand Nokia Health, and this Thermo in particular has caught my eye. With a simple no-contact swipe across the forehead, you can get a precise temperature measurement (and automatic sync with the dedicated app also allows you to track temperature readings), receive reminders, and input related symptoms/medications straight into your smartphone. £89.95, health.nokia.com August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

FABULOUS INTERIORS… A couple of months ago, we looked at the new Range Rover Velar – which has already started to become ubiquitous in certain well-heeled neighbourhoods. What we didn’t talk about at the time was the truly innovative interiors that are available to buyers, including a particularly interesting leather-free option. You might think that posh cars should always have leather interiors, but you might not know that Her Majesty herself prefers to sit on cloth. The Bentley State Limousine has leather seats up front for the driver and close protection officers, but the Royals in the back get to recline on lambswool sateen upholstery.

By Oliver Chesher

In that context, if you specified a wool interior in your next Range Rover, you’d be in good company.

96

Having seen it, I can say it actually looks and feels superior to the leather option – and at no extra cost. Could this start a new trend? It’s certainly not just vegans who will love the zero-leather alternative – after all, it’s easier to keep warm in cold weather, cool in hot weather, and we’re assured that it’s hardwearing and easy to clean.

August/September 2017 | salutions.co.uk

…AND HOW TO CLEAN THEM Speaking of which, those with small children in particular will know that keeping your car interior clean – leather or not – is a never-ending task. Enter the Gtech Multi, which is the best in the business right now, with its perfect blend of lightweight, power and versatility. It incorporates all the popular tools and attachments from the upright vacuum cleaner and puts them in the palm of your hand, and is completely cordless, so you can get into the deepest crevices wherever your car is parked. We particularly loved the built-in spotlights that illuminate where you’re cleaning, so there is nowhere for dirt to hide. One four-hour charge gives enough power to clean non-stop for 20 minutes, which is plenty of time for more than one car from top to bottom. The accessories include a PowerBrush that mimics the action of an upright cleaner to agitate dirt, such as pet hairs or food, crumbs in upholstery and carpets, plus the optional car kit includes a softer brush for delicate dashboard surfaces, and extra tools for precision cleaning and hard-to-reach gaps. you can get the whole package, including the K9 upgrade for pet owners and the car kit, for £149 from gtech.co.uk.
