Local news The UK's biggest celebration of food and drink brings a feast of foodie fun to the north west at Tatton Park 15-17 July.
This year's festival sees the region's culinary elite, including top chefs Aiden Byrne, Mary Ellen McTague and MasterChef winner, Simon Wood, showcasing their skills, sharing insight and answering questions from the audience in the Aga Rangemaster Chefs Theatre
With flavours from all over the world, hunger is banished and taste buds tingled with the huge array of cuisines on offer. From Argentina to Thailand and all points in between, these are just some of the flavours to feast on this summer, and celebrity chef Aldo Zilli will be serving Italian burritos as part of his new street food offering. And, there’s a special focus on Brazilian street food to celebrate the Olympic host’s cuisine, including traditional Brazilian BBQ and Rio’s favourite dish, Feijoada. Expert mixologists and sommeliers, including Neil Phillips and Charles
Metcalfe, host wine masterclasses and Home Brew Depot offer tutorials in home beer brewing. An array of Great Taste Award winners are available to shop and sample from, each one a producer of excellent food and drink. With over 120 stalls, selling everything from Seaweed Seasoning to Champagne Infused Fudge, visitors will be spoilt for choice. Baker extraordinaire, Charlotte White, and master chocolatier, Fiona Sciolti, work their baking wizardry to create show-stopping cakes and delicious summer bakes. Afternoon tea in the beautifully decorated Vintage Tea Room, served on china from a tea trolley, is another must. There’s a new 'Feel Good Foods' theme, where healthy living chefs and food writers will cook with superfoods, such as kefir and lucuma, and sirt rich foods such as blueberries and kale.
Festivalgoers can also munch into the depths of the jungle at the Vietnamese Street Food stand, where exotic tastes can indulge in insects, including grasshoppers and scorpions. For those brave enough, there’s a daily Bush Tucker Trial, where the contestant who eats the biggest juicy grubs and insects will be crowned champion! The famous Chilli Eating Challenge returns, inviting spice fans to beat the eye-watering 16 million Scoville record set by Shahina Waseem last year. Starting at the lower end of the chilli spectrum, things quickly heat up with Habanero, Scotch and Carolina Reaper (world's hottest chilli) chillies, which then leads to increasingly hotter pure chilli extracts until a winner eventually emerges. After a day of feasting and fun, visitors can relax and soak in the atmosphere with live music from award-winning local bands at the Unsigned Music Awards Stage, and a glass of bubbly or a reviving cocktail from the Giant Pimm's Teapot or double-decker BarBus. The Christie Walk of Hope 2016 is now open for registration A gentle 10k evening stroll through the beautiful grounds of Tatton Park The walk honours the courage of those battling cancer and of those who have sadly lost the fight. The evening will give you the chance to thank The Christie for the care and treatment provided and to raise vital funds, which help to ensure a high level of support is maintained for future patients. During the Walk of Hope, there will be opportunities to celebrate with survivors and to remember those who aren’t able to be there. Money raised from the Walk of Hope helps to provide inspiration and hope to cancer patients and their families, as well as helping to carry out more research, give more people the very best treatment and care – and save even more lives.
The Walk of Hope starts at 4pm on Saturday 17 September.

Hale Civic Society is gearing up for their next All Aboard event, which this year is to be ‘A Right Royal Knees Up!’, bringing together the community to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday The society wanted to have a street party feel to their annual event and is hosting the event at the same time as the Street Party on the Mall in London. It promises to be a great family day out, with music provided by Loose Change, Alan Wright Band and Amanda Jane Heywood. There will be food stalls, games, a Best Dressed Dog Show, the crowning of the Hale Rose Queen, tombolas, dancing, land sailing demonstrations, a Corgi Treasure Trail and much, much more! Foodie Festival Marches On
Now in its fourth year, the Lowry Outlet Food Festival continues to attract some of the UK’s biggest culinary names to MediaCityUK. This year, following in the footsteps of chefs of the calibre of James Martin and Paul Hollywood, two of Britain’s most inspirational cooks arrive, hoping to excite and inspire the north west’s ever-growing army of foodies She’s followed on Sunday by Levi Roots, who says ‘If a black, Brixtonian Rastafarian with just a sauce can make it – you can make it too!’ From his Reggae Reggae Sauces to writing his own songs, producing and singing on his albums, to opening his own Caribbean restaurant in London, Levi is one of the most dynamic characters in UK cooking right now.
First up on Friday, June 24, is Great British Bake Off winner, Nadiya Hussain. She has certainly lived up to her cry ‘I can and I will’, following her GBBO triumph. She produced a three-tier cake, which she presented to the Queen to celebrate her 90th birthday and is now starring in her own BBC TV show, The Chronicles of Nadiya. Described as an exuberant food-inspired journey, the two-part cookery show will see Nadiya travelling to Bangladesh and discovering changes on the food scene since her last visit to the country a decade ago for her wedding.
Sandwiched between them on Saturday is a dazzling array of Manchester’s finest restaurant chefs - both established and up-and coming - including Victor Yu for YuAlderly Edge, Carl Fraenkl-Rietti from Damson in Media City and Doug Crampton from James Martin Manchester. The Lowry Outlet’s Food Festival is now an established part of summer at MediaCityUK. It’s one of the busiest weekends of the year, with both inside and outside stalls, theatrical food vans, tastings, personalities, cook-ups and an array of foods from all over the country, plus cooking demonstrations and, of course, lots of places to eat and drink. All cookery demonstrations take place in the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Theatre in the piazza between the Lowry Outlet and Lowry Theatre. There will be opportunities
to meet the stars, pose for pictures and have books signed. Also outside is the Live Music Stage, with incredible new talent being showcased, mouth watering street food and stalls of cookware, crafts and award winning national and international cuisine.
A separate Kids Cookery Zone offers an opportunity for youngsters to learn basic skills in the Kids Cookery School, plus games and food-themed activities. The Food Festival is free for everyone. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall opens Maggie’s Centre in Manchester
Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has opened a new Maggie’s cancer support Centre in the grounds of The Christie Hospital. Acclaimed architects Foster + Partners designed the new Centre, known as Maggie’s Manchester at The Robert Parfett Building, with complementary landscape design by Dan Pearson Maggie’s Manchester is the charity’s 19th Centre across the UK and internationally, as well as offering a further online Centre for extra support. The Centre will provide a full programme of support, including psychological support, benefits advice, nutrition workshops, relaxation and stress management, art therapy, tai chi and yoga. Laura Lee, Maggie’s Chief Executive said: ’It was an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, Lord Foster and all of our guests to the opening of Maggie’s Manchester at The Robert Parfett Building. ‘It is wonderful that we will now be able to offer the people of Greater Manchester Maggie’s practical, emotional
and social support. The team at the Centre are now looking forward to welcoming visitors. Drawn in Time
This June sees ‘Didsbury Drawing' put on their fourth exhibition, ‘Drawn in Time’. This gathering of artists was founded in 2001 by sculptor and printmaker, Cecile Elstein, with the help of fibre artist Margaret Crowther, meeting to participate in life drawing - drawing from the nude
Coincidentally, 'Didsbury Drawing' began on Sept 11 2001, a happier event than the one that dominated the news that day! Although the participants have changed over the interim years, they all share a love of drawing from life. Seventeen of the group's artists are to exhibit their life drawing work, as well as a piece from their other areas of expertise.
In addition to the exhibition, which runs at The Old Parsonage from June 12 to July 3, there will be a music performance from 'Trio Fauve' on June 26 (cecile@cecileelstein.com £10) and a poetry reading event, 'Material Language 2016' on July 3 (Tickets from shirleyn@care4free.net £3)

We all see images of beautiful women on social media and in magazines; celebs like Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow, and models like Gigi Hadid, Adrianna Lima and Karlie Kloss, all looking fantastic
How do they do it? Emmaline Tsui, holistic facialist, Suzanne from Skinade, Cat and Laura from Runway Pilates, Kate and Amy from The Garden and Dr Rangan Chatterjee held a charity event at The Garden to help educate guests on how they, too, can get that ‘glow’. Dr Rangan Chatterjee talked about the benefits of healthy eating and how it can affect your lifestyle, fitness and health. He also explained how he managed to reverse Type 2 diabetes through diet alone. Emmaline spoke about how to get a natural glow from skincare and the best types of products to use, and Suzanne from Skinade discussed the benefits of Skinade and how it can aid skin and the body. Cat and Laura from Runway Pilates demonstrated how to use the machines and gave advice on posture and how to train with Pilates.
The Garden served guests a delicious cauliflower tabbouleh with homemade crackers and guacamole, and everyone went home with a goodie bag containing everything from free class passes to skincare products. The event was a huge success and Emmaline and the ‘Eat Move Glow’ gang thanked guests, who raised £510 for Beechwood Cancer Care.

BID Manager announced for Altrincham
The Board of Altrincham’s recently established Business Improvement District (BID) has announced the appointment of Katie Bland as Altrincham BID Manager Katie joins Altrincham BID from UBM – one of the world’s largest event organisers – where she has been leading ‘Routes’, a global events business serving the aviation community. She brings business expertise in key areas, including strategic planning, financial management and events management, and arrives already equipped with in-depth knowledge of Altrincham, having been born and brought up in the town and still living locally. Katie will take up the position at the end of June, and will be based at the new Altrincham BID office on The Downs.

Cath Rawthore Triumphs at the 21st
Cheshire’s Cath Rawthore snatched a dramatic victory in the English Senior Women’s Championship, capturing the title on the 21st hole of the final at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club It was the only time she was ahead in the match against Yorkshire’s Karen Jobling, and she had fought back from being two down after 16 holes. ‘I never say die’, she remarked afterwards. ’I always go for it, never give in and scramble, scramble, scramble. Sometimes it’s not pretty, but it’s what I do.’ Cath, an England senior international from Sale Golf Club, holed good putts on both the 17th and 18th to get back to all square and head down the 19th, which both players birdied. On the 20th, Cath had a chance to win, but took three puts from above the hole. The match ended on the 21st when Karen’s ball went through the green into a near impossible lie, while Cath had a birdie opportunity. ’It was a sad way to finish the match’, said Cath. ’Karen played tremendous golf; every time I thought I played a good shot she put it inside me. It was such hard work mentally, but very exciting, and I am absolutely thrilled.’

Charlotte’s DIARY He’s Leaving Home... Without Me? I like a good day trip. There’s something about getting up early and exploring somewhere new; shopping and eating, and then home late in the day buzzing from the sense of adventure and escape from the norm.
S
o, imagine how excited I was about the prospect of joining Number 1 Son in the university open day extravaganza that takes place in the summer (indeed, spring, autumn and even winter, too). How fab – lots of exciting day trips and visiting friends and cities across the UK – what’s not to like? Well, it would seem quite a lot. It appears that I have failed to pass on any of my wanderlust or appetite for voyages of discovery. It transpires that Google Maps and league tables provide all the information anyone could ever want at a click of a button. And so, despite deploying my best powers of persuasion, I didn’t manage to secure a Grand Tour. Instead, I have perused brochures and websites – really not the same –until Number 1 Son decides that it might be a good idea to have a look at where he might be spending the next three years.
At last! A glimmer of hope – I start to talk about clearing my diary, who we might visit and should we drive or get the train? Launching into Helicopter Mum mode with frightening ease and comfort, I busy myself thinking about campus versus city; the pros and cons of self-catered and catering (realizing, quite quickly, that actually I am not sure he can, in fact, cook!) and the virtues of a three or four year course. I suggest the creation of a matrix with tick boxes for good and bad points (yes, I really did suggest this). Not to mention checking out whether there is a John Lewis nearby. Only then, it turns out I’m not invited (can’t think why not). Oh! OK, I say, trying to sound nonchalant but clearly crestfallen, that’s fine. I fight the urge to ask whether he knows how to get from the train station to the university, or what lectures he’s booked on, or about accommodation options...
In fact, slowly but surely, I get used to the idea of him discovering these places by himself and making his own mind up about what might be good or bad about them. The journey to and from university is all part of the learning process, I say to myself. It is a positively good idea. Then, it turns out I do have a very important role to play in the open day scenario. Whilst my presence is not required, my access to cash is, and so, despite being a few hundred quid lighter, I’ve got no lovely day trip to show for it or even photos as a memory. How can I persuade No 2 Son to let me join him when it’s his turn? Well, to quote from his last school report: must try harder!

MEET STACEY A Real Housewife from Cheshire Reality TV is very often exactly not what it says on the tin, as larger than life surreal characters parade around in a world that most of us struggle to recognise. Of course, it’s entertainment, and that usually requires laughter and tears to be artificially injected into the ‘plot’ so that we viewers can connect with the characters for the hour we spend with them every week. Sometimes, though, these shows really do introduce a ‘real’ person and our interest and affection for both them, and the others in the cast, becomes much keener and stronger. Stacey Forsey, a new arrival on our screens in ITVBe’s Real Housewives of Cheshire, could well be such a person.

But before the reality TV came the real life. Worsley, not Wilmslow, is where Stacey’s proud roots lie. Her parents had moved out from Salford to suburban Worsley when Stacey was a baby, and it was within the town’s safe and green environments that Stacey and her family lived a happy and comfortable modest life. Education was important and Stacey did well at school, passing through Walkden High and then Pendleton College for her A Levels, before arriving at Manchester University to study Events and Hospitality Management.

Art had always been one of Stacey’s great loves and she gained an A Level A* in the subject with a view to pursuing it at University. But, she opted for a more pragmatic degree course, which though it has served her well, was an uncharacteristic and rare example of her not following her heart’s desire, something that she now passionately believes in. Yearning for new experiences and desperate to exercise her itchy feet, Stacey went to live and work in Turkey. In a five-year on-and-off spell, she lived in Istanbul, Ankara and Bodrum, working in hotels and events management, all of which gave her an insight into a completely different way of life and full fluency in the language. Returning to Manchester in her mid-twenties, she then moved down to live and work in London, and it was here that her fate was sealed by a kick.Well, a free-kick actually. David Beckham’s last-gasp winner against Greece in 2001 can claim some responsibility as it was at that game that she first met her future husband. Destiny and fate collided as the ball hit the back of the net, and Stacey and Dave became best friends for two years before they finally got together. The rest, for both Stacey and Dave, and the other David, too, is history. They married after a two-year friendship, and have now, with two young children completing their family, lived in Cheshire for the last ten years. She’s a very hands-on mum and has managed to successfully juggle her family role with her own outside interests in charitable work. For the last three years she has thrown open her house to local businesses and fashion retailers, and hosted fundraising events for the breast cancer charity, Genesis. Utilising her people and management skills and combining them with a love of fashion and art, she’s raised thousands of pounds for charity. It was at one of these events that she was approached to feature in The Real Housewives of Cheshire. So though not a native of the county, she’s definitely regarded as an adopted daughter!

Her family commitments have always come first, but now that her children are a little older and more independent, Stacey decided it was time for a new challenge and has joined the show’s ensemble cast with two other newcomers. Stacey has been, perhaps not so surprisingly, very quickly marked out by the show’s large and devoted following as relatable and recognisably like us. She’s found the filming fascinating and exhilarating and, of course, there’s been a learning curve as she comes to terms with being part of a hugely popular show that is even watched by the Kardashians. This creative activity has now inspired her to expand her charitable work by returning to her first love, art. She intends to produce her abstract, contemporary paintings and then auction them for charity at a summer exhibition.
She’s also set up a lifestyle website, covering her love of travel, fashion and art, on which she blogs and hopes to inspire her followers with. Extremely aware of her current fortunate position, Stacey always balances that by being ever conscious of the hard work and sacrifices that she and her family have undertaken to arrive at this place. Stacey Forsey keeps it real and, though we may sometimes see her in a world that doesn’t seem remotely real, she’s determined to remain true to herself. The journey from Salford to Cheshire’s ‘golden triangle’ can be disorientating, and many a traveller has lost their way on this road to fulfilment and happiness, but Stacey Forsey’s compass seems to be working fine for her. With its days as a civic building long since consigned to history, it has always generated speculation about what goes on inside there. THE IMPORTANCE OF SCREENING FOR GROUP B STREPTOCOCCUS IN PREGNANCY Group B Streptococcus, also known as GBS or Strep B infection, is a bacterium that is carried naturally in 20 to 30% of men and women. It usually lives in the gut or, in adult women, is often found in the vagina and, because of this, there is a risk that the bacteria can be passed to babies during pregnancy and birth. Carrying the GBS bacteria does not automatically mean that a baby will become infected and ill; however, it does increase the chance. the growth of GBS, and so enhance its detection. The bacteria have to grow into a sizeable colony before they can be identified, so getting a result takes a minimum of 24 hours, and more usually two to three days to establish whether GBS has grown. The test is usually done at around 35 to 37 weeks of pregnancy.
RiSk FactoRS In the UK, 75% of GBS infections in babies from birth to six days, and 90% of resulting deaths from the disease, follow deliveries where one or more of the associated risk factors were present. These indicators include pregnant women who have a high temperature during labour, labour starting or waters breaking prematurely, and having a previous baby infected with GBS. Early recognition and treatment is important for the successful treatment of GBS. ScReening In the UK, pregnant women are not routinely offered testing for GBS and the current policy for screening is centred on using a ‘risk factor’ approach to determining which women are most likely to be affected. Sensitive tests designed to detect group GBS carriage are available, but

rarely within the NHS. Women can choose to be screened privately; however, only at specialist pregnancy clinics. The ECM (or Enriched Culture Medium) test is recognised as the ‘gold standard’ for detecting GBS carriage. Swab samples are taken from the lower vagina and just inside the rectum, which are then incubated in an enriched culture medium specifically designed to encourage
If a woman is carrying GBS during her pregnancy, then preventative action can be taken to minimise the chance of her newborn baby developing the infection. It is standard practice, if GBS is detected at any time during pregnancy, that women should be offered intravenous antibiotics from the start of their labour and at regular intervals until the baby is born. If you are concerned about GBS, you should speak to your GP, midwife or a specialist pregnancy clinic.

artners Susan and Khal are the owners of H&H Eyecare, and they’ve been looking into, and around, eyes for quite a considerable time. In fact, they have 35 years’ worth of experience between them. They first met 12 years ago at the practice where they were both working and, as you’d expect from eye specialists, they both knew a good thing when they saw it! Love’s unerring arrow and realisation that they both shared the same ambition for a perfect optician’s practice brought them together in work and in life. Hale-born Susan has wanted to be an optician since she was first prescribed glasses at the age of eight, and achieved her ambition when she qualified as a dispensing optician in 2006, and then as a contact lens optician in 34

2011. Khal’s potential for optometry was recognised by his A Level Physics teacher in Bolton; Aston University duly followed, after which he qualified as an optometrist in 1998. He’s since gone on to acquire a Professional Certificate in Glaucoma and is currently carrying out post-graduate studies at Aston, once again, to qualify as an independent prescribing practitioner, of which there are very few around the country. They’ve also invested in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which uses ultrasound to see beneath the surface of the retina and on to the optical nerve and macula. This technology enables Khal to detect many possible future medical conditions at a far earlier stage, sometimes years earlier, than conventional methods. Starkly put, H&H Eyecare see much more of your eye than 97% of opticians in the North West! An eye examination can reveal many aspects about our general health and wellbeing: from glaucoma to high cholesterol, and diabetes to anaemia, and even cancer.
So, it’s sensible to think of it as an important and essential part of our health maintenance regime, whether we’re experiencing vision problems or not. H&H Eyecare’s facility for early detection, something not readily available elsewhere, provides a significant benefit for their patients, as an eye examination with them reveals more of the eye and, therefore, much more information about it than is available elsewhere. Suzy Glaskie IS LACK OF SLEEP SABOTAGING YOUR HEALTH? One of the first things I quiz my new clients on is their sleep. In our 24/7, constantly wired culture, many of us are blithely sacrificing precious sleep without realising that it’s wrecking our health and wellbeing. According to the Royal Society for Public Health, the average person in the UK is under-sleeping by about an hour a night, losing the equivalent of an entire night’s sleep a week. Sleep influences so many aspects of our lives: from our productivity to our reaction time; from our weight to our decision-making; from our skin to our job; and from our mood to our relationships. Poor sleep is known to increase the risk of developing serious medical conditions including obesity, heart disease and diabetes, and to shorten life expectancy. Of course, there are those for whom disrupted sleep is unavoidable – new mums, for example. But, for others, it’s become a way to squeeze more out of their day. I find that many women are at full pelt while the rest of the house is fast asleep: whether it’s polishing their kids’ shoes or making cakes at midnight, they’re going without precious sleep in a misguided bid to be the perfect parent. Then there are those who spend the wee hours binge-watching on Netflix, checking up compulsively on social media or browsing online shopping sites. It’s now become pretty normal to sleep with your phone inches from your head, and often an iPad balancing on your chest. But here’s the problem: research has shown that LED screens obstruct the body’s production of melatonin, which helps govern our internal body clock and regulates our sleep cycle. it’s time to reassess our priorities and give sleep the respect it deserves. Sleep needs vary but, generally, everyone needs seven to nine hours a night. Here are just a few reasons why: •

A proper night's sleep will lower your blood pressure and reduce levels of the stress hormone in your body, providing emotional stability. Lack of sleep, on the other hand, leaves us feeling irritable, moody and angry. While we’re at rest, our bodies are hard at work repairing cell and tissue damage. Our brains are busy consolidating memories, processing information and making connections.

Sleep restriction leads to a big decrease in leptin, an important hormone that controls your appetite and your metabolism. Sleep deprivation makes you feel hungrier and less sated, which encourages you to eat more, and also increases your cravings for junk foods.
try these tips to improve your sleep: • • • • • • • • • •
Take a magnesium supplement, a powerful relaxation mineral, before going to bed. Have a hot bath and add magnesium-rich Epsom Salts and a few drops of lavender oil. Make sure your room is completely dark, free of clutter and cool (around 18 degrees). Try to choose a wake-up time you can stick to within an hour every day of the week to support your body’s natural rhythms. An hour before going to bed, switch off all electronic devices, including the TV. Keep your iPhone/iPad out of your bedroom (if you’re telling yourself you need your phone to wake you up, invest in an alarm clock!). Finish dinner at least two hours before you intend to go to bed. Leave a three-hour gap between exercising and lights out. Try a ten-minute meditation or breathing practice. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon/evening.

Patients can be scanned lying down, seated or stood upright, which greatly increases the accuracy and relevancy of diagnosis where weight bearing is a significant contributory factor in the patient’s symptoms. The European Scanning Centre also provides ultrasound scanning with Toshiba equipment that is amongst the best in the world. Alongside regular ultrasound scanning, they offer ultrasound guided joint injections, such as cortisone injections, PRP (platelet rich plasma) and joint lubricants, all performed by leading Consultant Radiologists.

Of course, all this leading edge clinical technology is greatly reassuring, but it can also be intimidating, especially so when undergoing diagnosis for a medical condition. Dr Nafees Zakir and his team of highly experienced and professional dental clinicians at Manchester Dental have encountered and successfully treated many kinds of dental problems. As dental clinicians, they operate at the highest levels of proficiency to be found anywhere. However, there is an aspect of their work that is often overlooked, but not, fortunately for us, by Nafees and his team.
Our bodies are complex, and much of what’s really happening to us lies unseen and unnoticed. So, when something deep within us affects our general wellbeing, we can often remain oblivious, and the malaise continues to grow unchecked and untreated. Until, of course, it eventually does surface and triggers a new set of problems and challenges for the body and mind. So it is sometimes with our teeth. They can reflect many issues, most of which, admittedly, do only pertain to our teeth and how well, or not, we’ve looked after them. But, sometimes a greater and much more significant problem can be both exacerbated by, and be a significant contributory factor to, our poor dental health. A recent patient at Manchester Dental perfectly, and very dramatically, encapsulated this type of problem. A returning veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan, he struggled to settle back into home life and, unable to hold down a job, slowly spiralled into severe clinical depression. His post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) triggered everything that followed, but the effect on his
general physical health, and especially his teeth, would further compound his problems down the line. Depression resulted in isolation, alcohol abuse and complete disregard for his own physical wellbeing, including total neglect of his teeth. Eventually, with clinical help, he started to overcome his depression and emerge back into normal life. It was at this stage that his teeth now represented a very significant challenge to him. They had rotted away, leaving a huge and unsightly gap in his mouth that now began to reverse his psychological recovery by significantly affecting his ability to get a job. First appearances in interviews are crucial, and he, quite understandably, struggled to overcome the damaging effect his teeth had on his confidence. So, on the road to recovery from depression he now found his route blocked by his rotten teeth, which had only arisen because of his depression. A potentially vicious cycle was now turning. A consultation and course of treatment from Manchester Dental broke the deadlock for him. Nafees’ decade long expertise in dental implants provided the transformative treatment that would not only restore his smile, but also positively impact his psychological wellbeing along the way. After several implant procedures and follow up consultations, Nafees handed him a mirror to inspect his new smile.

He was, remember, a battle hardened ex-soldier, but when he looked in the mirror, he broke down and wept tears of relief and joy. His journey from PTSD and severe depression to a life more resembling his old one could now continue. Professor Adam Watts Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow; which one is yours? Tennis elbow is a relatively common condition, affecting around 5% of the population, and occurs in both men and women equally. Golfer’s elbow is less common, with the incidence being about one fifth of that of tennis elbow. Both conditions are more prevalent in people over the age of 40. Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are overuse injuries of the forearm tendons. Tennis elbow causes pain around the outside of the elbow, whereas golfer’s elbow causes pain on the inside of the elbow. In both cases, symptoms can spread to the forearm.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be a golfer or a tennis player to suffer from these injuries, as only 5% of people developing these conditions do so from playing racquet sports.
SYMPTOMS
TREATMENT
As tennis elbow pain is focused around the outside of the elbow, this tends to be more intense when extending the wrist backwards against a force, for example when opening a jar or lifting something out of a briefcase or handbag. Many people suffering with tennis elbow also struggle to extend the affected arm fully and experience stiffness and a weak grip, especially first thing in the morning.
Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are self-limiting conditions that usually get better over time by resting the arm and avoiding overuse. Both conditions can take anywhere from a few months to a couple of years to properly heal, with approximately 90% of sufferers making a full recovery within a year.
People suffering with golfer’s elbow experience pain on the inner side of their elbow and this can extend to the inner side of the forearm. Other symptoms of golfer’s elbow include stiffness, weakness in the hand or wrist and numbness that can radiate into one or more of the fingers. There might also be pain when making a fist. Symptoms can intensify when you flex your wrist, shake hands, swing a sports club or squeeze a ball. CAUSES Your elbow joint is surrounded by muscles that not only move your elbow, but also control the movement of your forearm and wrist as well. The tendons in the elbow join the muscles and bones together and control the forearm muscles. If the tendons become damaged by overuse they cause the symptoms of tennis or golfer’s elbow. In the case of golfer’s elbow, symptoms develop when the muscles and tendons controlling the forearm and wrists become damaged. This damage typically relates to excess or repeated stress, particularly forceful wrist movements. Golfer’s elbow can also be caused by racquet sports, as well as throwing sports and weight training, particularly if the equipment used is too heavy or inaccurately sized. The condition can also be caused by any activity that involves using your forearm or repeatedly extending your wrist, such as decorating, typing, gardening or playing musical instruments.
You can help to reduce pain and swelling by icing the area, and anti-inflammatory pain relievers may be of use in the first four weeks. However, it is important to seek medical attention if the condition does not show improvement. A specialist may recommend the following treatments: •
Physiotherapy to remodel the tendons, and specific exercises that strengthen your forearm muscles, is the most important first line of treatment.
•
Injections: PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections may help to speed up healing of the affected areas. Steroid injections will provide short term pain relief but the recurrence of pain commonly occurs and long term pain may result.
•
Surgical treatment might be required for severe cases of tennis and golfer’s elbow that do not respond to any other treatments. Surgeons who specialise in elbow surgery tend to have the highest success rates. Key-hole and open surgical techniques can be used.

ut, this summer I’ve decided to conduct an experiment of my own. With children but, thankfully, not a Bunsen burner in sight. So, don’t worry, Mrs Richardson, no need to alert the NSPCC. You see, June marks the beginning of garden party season. Otherwise known as boozy BBQ season. Very boozy BBQs... lots of them. Now BBQs, ahem, I mean garden parties, have long been a passion of me and my mates. Back in our 20s, when BBQ weekends were all about guzzling K Cider; eating burnt sausages; dancing ‘til dawn; grabbing a couple of hours’ kip; a full English and then repeating. Oh! The stamina of a twentysomething’s liver. Then, on into our thirties, when little ones started arriving and our BBQs had to kick off way earlier in the day to have any chance of new parents staying up past 7pm. Although, to be fair, many were invariably up at dawn, only now nursing a bottle of a very different kind. Fast forward another decade, and we find ourselves surrounded by tweens rolling
their eyes at their fathers drunkenly dancing to The Arctic Monkeys and dying in embarrassment as their mothers reminisce about skinny dipping in Ibiza. So, this summer, I’ve decided to put a bit more effort into our get-togethers from the kids point of view: the adults can drink, dance and reminisce in peace, whilst I’ll see if I can actually get a few of them interested in growing stuff, as my Dad did when I was a kid. Much to the delight of my mates, some of whom are still struggling to get their kids to eat veg. So, here’s the plan for this weekend. Adults: boozy day in the sun. Kids: a couple of hours decorating plant pots before planting them up with one of my kid-friendly combos. First up, ‘Grow your own Pasta Sauce Pot’. Well, most kids I know like pasta, so we’ll put one cherry tomato plant centre stage with basil, parsley and oregano around it. Next, ‘Grow Your Own Strawberry Jam Pot’, containing two or three strawberry plug plants under-planted with straw to deter slugs. Finally, ‘Busy Bees & Beautiful
Butterflies’, containing one French lavender plant at the front and three borage seeds sown behind, so the kids can see with their own eyes the magic of seeds bursting into life. Hopefully, the kids will go home carrying their painted pots, enthused and excited, and their parents will go home relaxed. Result! So, if you’ve got kids rolling their eyes at you during your summer BBQs, why not give this experiment a go, too? You never know, you might have a budding Monty Don in the family. You’ll Always Find Helen Lord IN THE KITCHEN AT PARTIES...! The kitchen is, for most of us, the centrepiece of our homes; it’s where we gather before setting out for the day and the place we return to at the end of it. Homework and birthdays, stories and announcements, laughter and tears and, yes, even some cooking and eating; it all happens in here. So it’s important that our kitchens provide the right environment for all that life will throw at it. Helen Lord went on a quest for just such a kitchen and it launched her on a voyage of discovery and a great new business that helps others find their perfect kitchen, too.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and for Helen, married with a large family, it really was. Having bought a home that needed extensive renovation, she soon found her budget overstretched. The house was Edwardian in style and required a large, elegant kitchen. She knew the importance of getting the kitchen right and wasn’t prepared to compromise on quality and, so, after much searching, she came across a designer used kitchen online, which she ended up buying for a fraction of its original £70,000 price. She realised there was an opportunity to not only plug a gap in the market, but also to promote green renewable possibilities. Needlessly dumping good used kitchens into skips appeared to be the default position for most of us, as we failed to see the resale possibilities or the environmental damage. Helen’s great idea resulted in Used Kitchen Exchange, an online service specialising in the buying and selling of ex-display and second hand kitchens. The service is cost effective for customers, makes money for sellers and, in addition, is kind to the environment. Helen’s energy and enthusiasm, and passion for her new venture, saw her start with just a computer and a phone, but she soon set about meeting kitchen companies face-to-face to explain her concept. They loved what they heard and she’s gone from strength to strength. She now employs a team of people
and has recently moved into a larger office as she sets about making usedkitchenexchange.co.uk a national name. The process is simple for both buyers and sellers. All kitchens are professionally surveyed, valued and photographed in situ at the property, and the details, including images and full measurements, are then posted on the Used Kitchen Exchange website. As part of the service, they can also arrange for removal and delivery, which is individually quoted. From the smoky campsite of the gaucho to the kitchens of the most prestigious restaurants, the asado, or barbecue, is a permanent fixture on any menu. Eaten with friends and family, the traditional Sunday asado can feature anything from sweetbreads to sausages, and beef ribs to sheep intestines, but it’s steak that remains the star of the show. Served hot from the flames, sprinkled with salt, topped with chimichurri and served with a glass of Malbec – this is the heart of Argentine cooking. To start, Liam has created a hand-crafted rabbit and pistachio sausage roll, chicken liver parfait served with toasted brioche fingers and a dainty selection of finger sandwiches. To follow, there is homemade apricot and almond tart, coffee and walnut battenberg cake and, of course, the essential fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. White chocolate and raspberry milkshake, and chocolate chip cookies add a sense of fun to the plate. Afternoon Tea Salon Host your own afternoon tea party at the Fallen Angel private salon at The Clarence, which also has its own cocktail bar. Perfect for stylish birthday parties, get-togethers and networking events, this intimate space caters for parties up to 25. Afternoon Tea is Served 12-4pm Monday to Saturday. Celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo joined guests at the restaurant's relaunch. Following a £1.3m refit, this previously overlooked Piccolino in the city centre reopened with celebrity chef, Gino D’Acampo, amongst the guests in a very lavish affair. Now doubled in size, the new restaurant has an open grill, fresh seafood kitchen, pizza kitchen, a shellfish counter, a cheese counter, caviar bar, patisserie, juicery, gelato bar, wine wall and two private dining rooms. The menu boasts pastas, sourdough pizzas and our famous Aberdeen Angus steak. The gelato bar has all your favourites, from pistachio to white chocolate. The atmosphere is vibrant and friendly, and the food is, of course, great, with a fabulous selection of drinks as well. Recommended highlights are the gamberoni prawns with chilli on a ciabatta bread starter (£8.95) and the salmon con panzanella (£19).
Fabulous all day menu offering great value and a great atmosphere. It’s been three years since Expo Lounge opened in Didsbury. It’s a very communal place, with many regulars coming in daily from surrounding areas to enjoy its well-proportioned lounge with seating for 90 inside and a further 30 outside on its sunlit terrace. So, what better way to spend a lazy Sunday morning than a visit to Expo Lounge? Brunch is served all day, with prices starting at £1.95, so we opted for the Avocado Brunch (£6.95), great value and terrifically tasty, too, with lime, chilli, coriander and tomato topped with a poached egg and served on toasted ciabatta. A reviving breakfast tea for me and a freshly ground Americano for the boss were the perfect accompaniment. The Smoked Haddock & Potato (£7.25), with streaky bacon, poached egg and chive hollandaise sauce, tempted me, but I’m saving that for my next visit. Soon! Pop into Expo Lounge for delicious food served in a great atmosphere... it’s definitely my cup of tea!

Now approaching its second birthday and established as a village favourite, CROMA’s passion for great food and exemplary service continues to delight. An additional selection of spring options can all be enjoyed in their beautiful alfresco dining area. These include a lovely bresaola and artichoke salad with cured slices of fine beef, marinated chargrilled artichokes, parmesan shavings and watercress, all drizzled with lemon infused olive oil, and whole tiger prawns sautéed in garlic oil and chilli and served with a crème fraiche dip. The dessert list includes a Gran Gelato Italian lemon sorbet, perfectly complemented by a glass of delightful Muscat. The eclectic wine list (all available by the glass) includes an Albariño and Grillo and a fruity Nero d’Avola, and beer lovers now have Peroni on draught and craft ales from Radcliffe’s Brightside Brewing Company.
Pier Eight now boasts a brand new look after its £3m refurbishment and extension. The new dining and drinks destination, which officially opened to the public last November, has seating for a total number of 300 diners, serving two modern British menus, including a casual dining bar menu and formal menu within the restaurant. The interior takes influence from northern European design, with a calming colour palette and a range of delicate textures and design details. Seating styles vary from contemporary armchairs, to intimate booths and longer tables for larger groups, emulating the relaxed and welcoming environment created by the expansion. Incorporating two shipping containers, providing views over the Manchester Ship Canal, the complete extension includes a terrace area, an event space with a second private terrace, as well as the Pier Eight restaurant and bar with extended kitchen. The kitchen will also feature a Chef’s Table, seating up to eight guests for a captivating dining experience.
For those searching for a really special experience look no further than The Lounge at Manchester House. Each element of Proprietor-Chef Aiden Byrne’s latest, colonial inspired afternoon tea aims to tell a story and offer a short but sweet gastronomic jaunt around a variety of countries. The rose apple macaroon, made with southern Asian fruit is more guava than apple. The fruit has such a distinctive flavour and aroma of roses and apples that there really is no sweeter name. A colonial inspired afternoon tea wouldn’t be complete without a Coronation chicken sandwich, which was first served at the Queen’s Coronation lunch in 1953 and kept the name thereafter. The restaurant, located at 209 Deansgate in Manchester, pays homage to Spanish cuisine and tapas, as well as providing an array of traditional Spanish wines and beer provided exclusively by Estrella Galicia. The restaurant, owned by Didsbury couple Nacho Perez and Natalia Esquerdo, is supported by Juan Mata and his father, Juan Manuel Mata Rodriguez. Having felt there was a lack of premium quality Spanish food in Manchester, the duo teamed up with Nacho and Natalia to bring in the finest ingredients and products. At the launch, Juan stated: ’I’m really excited about the launch of Tapeo and Wine. There’s great Spanish food, drinks and a great atmosphere. I can’t wait for the people of Manchester to come down and try it.’ It was a great evening, as the footballers relaxed and had a lad’s night out celebrating the new restaurant and enjoying some downtime with friends and family. ith nearly 1600 km of palm-fringed coastline, Sri Lanka is the ideal destination for beach boys (and girls), offering windsurfing, kayaking, yachting, water skiing, scuba diving or just lazing around for the perfect tan. And, its two alternating monsoons enable year round sunshine at either end of the island. NATuRAL WONDERS A wild and untamed island, Sri Lanka is, despite its small size, included among the top five bio-diversity wonders of the world. Among the ninety-one species of mammals found in Sri Lanka are Asian elephants, sloth bears, leopards, sambar and wild buffaloes, and rarer species, too, such as the red slender Loris, Toque Macaque and purple-faced Langur. Birds are the crowning glory of Sri Lanka’s wildlife. Boasting nearly 433 bird species, of which 233 are resident, the island holds 20 endemic species while another 80 species have developed distinct Sri Lankan strains.
ANCiENT CiviLiSATiONS With a history expanding over 3000 years, Sri Lanka possesses some of the world’s most ancient cities, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Digamadulla. Their once glorious buildings, palaces, temples, monasteries, hospitals and theatres, all intricately carved and modelled out of stone, now lie abandoned and overgrown by the fertile jungles as time has moved on and ancient civilisations have been lost. Sri Lanka’s cultural Heritage is recognized by UNESCO, which has declared six archaeological World Heritage Sites in the country: • • • • • •

Although less celebrated, Sri Lanka also has one of the richest diversity of amphibians in the world, containing over 106 species of amphibians, over 90 of which are endemic. The country has long claimed to have the highest amphibian species density in the world, with an especially high concentration in the Sinharaja rainforest.
Sigiriya, a fifth century AD fortress and water garden, displays some of the most futuristic elements of landscaping, as well as some of the oldest murals in the country.

The cultivation of many types of rice, spices, vegetables and fruit, coupled with past foreign influences, ensures that Sri Lanka enjoys a varied and select cuisine. If making an impact is anything to go by, Withington Girls’ School (WGS) pupils certainly won’t forget the launch of Siemens’ SeeWomen Project in a hurry. Hosted at the school on the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, the SeeWomen programme was devised by Siemens Education and the Girls’ Schools Association to attract girls into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers. Neuroscientist Fran Scott, presenter of CBBC’s ‘Absolute Genius with Dick and Dom’, enthralled 300 independent and mainstream year 9 pupils with an hour-long action-packed show, peppering thought-provoking and myth-challenging information with a meticulously orchestrated series of bangs, flashes, smoke rings and pyrotechnic wizardry.
Applauding Siemens’ efforts to break down career stereotyping, Halifax-born Scott admits ’My life’s ambition is to encourage women into science. I’m devoted to teaching about science and making it simple. People aren’t shown what it’s really about. The undercurrent of this show is to dispel myths and reveal the opportunities available.‘ And what venue could be more apt than WGS for this inaugural event? Its founders in 1890 had pledged girls the same education as boys, seeing sciences as key to the curriculum. Headteacher Mrs. Sue Marks adds ’That ethos remains at the heart of our school today and we are extremely proud of our girls’ success in the STEM subjects. One-third of last year’s 6th form leavers are studying STEM-based subjects such as engineering, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, mathematics and other sciences at top universities.’
Siemens’ preference for a non-London launch, and the company’s long-standing presence here, made Manchester the obvious location of choice for this event. Siemens plc’s Chief Financial Officer, Canadian accountant Maria Ferraro, states ’Our 10 year programme for SeeWomen entails rolling out this model throughout the UK. We want to assure girls that engineering is not necessarily a man’s world at all. We’re investing in the future, a sort of industrial renaissance, one not going back but looking to the future. We need problem-solvers in the next generation. Right now, over here, we don’t have them. So, we’re trying to get that pipeline of talent we shall need in place. By ensuring we train the engineers of tomorrow, our problem solvers will be ready.’ WGS endorses Siemens’ hopes that SeeWomen will inspire girls to realise their endless possibilities may well lie within STEM subjects. The aim is to develop the basic tools, not to be the best. Dr Sue Madden, WGS Head of Science concludes ‘Many younger girls are unaware of the diversity of career options available to them after university and the new career paths opening up as technological and environmental needs increase. The SeeWomen event raised the profile of women within STEM, highlighting the exciting possibilities open to them.’

Double sporting success for Withington Girls’ School National Netball Champions and County Hockey Stars
Withington Girls’ School is celebrating double sporting success as its netball and hockey teams clinched two prestigious championships in just 24 hours. The school’s Under 13 netball team beat off tough competition from across the country to take away the Independent Schools Netball Cup (ISNC), whilst the Under 16 hockey team emerged victorious in the Greater Manchester County Hockey Tournament. In netball, the Under-13 squad triumphed in five qualifying rounds to take their place in the ISNC final in Ilford against Brentwood School. After a closely fought match, and with the score level at 24-24 in the last minute of the game, the Withington Year 8s rallied to clinch the winning goal with only six seconds to go as Hannah Jenkins - named Player of the Match – successfully hit home with a well-aimed shot at the net. It is the first time Withington has won the ISNC national award. Withington PE Teacher and Netball Coach,
Miss Alexa Collier, said ’The girls have made school history!’ Withington’s hockey teams also enjoyed a successful weekend and were thrilled to win the U16 County Tournament, which was held at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Having beaten Loreto and Woodhey, the hockey squad drew with their hosts, before winning the competition overall on goal difference. For Withington – primarily known for its academic attainment –it was another record for the school’s history books.
Cheadle Hulme School sports in mass medal haul
In the same week that Cheadle Hulme School’s U15 netballers became National Champions and the school’s horse riders became the first dressage team ever to make the National Finals, both the U12 rugby players and U13 netballers brought home prestigious wins of their own. In the King’s School Grantham Rugby 7s competition, the U12 boys made their way to the final following a superb performance against St. Ambrose College, winning 19-0 in the semi-final. The final saw them take on the hosts and pick up their medals after an impressive 22-7 win. Closer to home, the U13 Netball team triumphed in the Stockport Schools’ tournament, becoming outright winners following an awesome display of team effort throughout the event.
Manchester High’s Big Sister scheme launched
A new pilot programme has been launched at the Preparatory Department of Manchester High School for Girls. It aims to give girls hands-on experience developing their community-building and leadership skills. Manchester High’s Big Sisters scheme pairs girls in Reception with a partner in Year 6. They read books together once a week and share events like a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Big Sisters’ Lunch. The programme welcomes girls from Reception into a group of peers right from the start of their education. Meanwhile, the older girls are able to put the school’s ethos of support and inclusion into practice. Indeed, the programme has proven to be very popular with students and parents alike. Girls in Reception have said they like seeing their new friends around school, and agree that their Big Sisters make them feel ‘happy and excited’. Year 5 students have seen the programme in action and are already looking forward to their chance to be Big Sisters, and teachers are confident this type of relationship building will have a lasting effect on the school’s culture. Following a rigorous national search and selection procedure, the school received applications from a number of highcalibre candidates. Three candidates made the final round and, with the school’s governing bodies present, undertook a wide variety of tasks over the two days of interviews. These included meetings with the Head Girls of the Junior and Senior schools, chairing a meeting of the Senior Management Team, leading a school assembly and a presentation to the full board. The Governors were unanimous in
agreeing that Mrs Jeys had impressed them hugely throughout the process. She joins AESG from Manchester High School for Girls, where she had been Deputy Headmistress (Pastoral) since 2012. Mrs Jeys has now attended several events and the school looks forward to welcoming her fully over the coming months. The school is hosting a Midsummer Evening of music, art, dance and drama to celebrate Mrs Goff ’s Headship on Thursday 30 June. MGS young scientist wins prestigious competition Year 12 pupil, Limeng Zhu, 17, from East Didsbury, has won the Oxford Medical School Gazette (OMSG) Essay Competition. The OMSG is the oldest medical student journal in the world and the national competition was launched last year. Entrants had to explore the question of how modern medicine must adapt to changes and challenges over the next 50 years. The judging panel of senior lecturers from the Oxford Medical School chose Limeng’s essay as the winning entry. They praised his work as being ‘exceptional,
thoughtful, well-written and interesting’. Limeng explored the possible uses and integration of wearable healthcare technology, increasing the amount of data available to doctors, and his own experiences of IT systems in an NHS hospital. Limeng’s essay will be published in the Oxford Medical School Gazette and he received £100 in Amazon vouchers. Said Limeng ’I’m absolutely delighted to have won the Oxford Medical School Gazette Essay Competition – it’s a real honour.’
The Ryleys celebrate at Alderley Edge Music Festival Annabel Thompstone 1st Place
The Ryleys is celebrating an abundance of wins at this year’s Alderley Edge Music Festival, which saw performances from 25 children, aged 5-11. The Chamber Choir came second in a highly competitive Year 6 and under class, and the Junior Choir performed to an extremely high standard and came third. Annabel Thompstone scooped three individual awards: first in the Year 6 musical class, first for piano and second for the Year 6 vocal class, which was a difficult category. Eight children achieved second place for several classes, including Charlie McGrath, Seb Stewart, Freddie Savage, Freya Murry and Seb Irwin who all played piano, as well as George Green, who came second for Grade 4 cello. Four children came third in equally competitive classes: Sienna Given, Frankie Coglan and Tav Hammersley, who all played piano and Harry Dhoot, who played his own choice prep test.

Sporting success at Stockport Grammar School The U15 netball team won the Smile Independent Schools Netball Cup Plate Final after beating Brentwood School 45-31. The U14s won the Stockport Schools Netball Tournament after powering their way through to beat Cheadle Hulme School in the final. The U12s were runners up in both the Stockport Schools Netball Tournament and the Greater Manchester County Tournament. The Year 6 footballers won the Stockport Schools Junior Football Shield for the fifth time. They came up against St. Joseph’s (Reddish), Banks Lane, Broadstone Hall, Didsbury Road and St. Winifred’s, and won all their games. The U11 cricket team won a Sixes tournament held at Manchester Grammar School after beating Newcastle-under-Lyme School, St Bede’s, Cheadle Hulme School and the hosts. The Year 5 and
6 athletics students competed in the IAPS (The Independent Association of Prep Schools) Area 7 Championships, with many securing places in July’s National Championships. For the girls: Darcy Breen won the U11 1500m, Amy Jack finished third in the U12 1500m, and Talia Zelhof finished fifth in the U12 800m. For the boys: Dominic Hanson came second in the U11 1500m, Patrick Wilkinson placed fourth in the U12 1500m, and Oliver Van de Ploeg came fifth in the U12 800m race. In the sprint finals, Annabel Mobley came first in the U12 100m, Libby Bowden second in the 200m, Holly Williams third in the U11 100m and Harry Williams second in the U12 200m. Finally, in the team relays our athletes were on form too, with the girls winning by a good margin and the boys finishing a close second.

Withington Girls’ School’s debut performance at the Alderley Edge Music Festival hit the right note with judges as entries in two classes earned the WGS choristers a coveted first prize. In the Festival’s 100th celebratory concert, Withington’s Voccine Choral Group and the Middle School Choir took to the stage to compete against other local schools. After impressing the adjudicators with their ‘good vocal technique’ and energy, they were overjoyed to score a spectacular 86

The WGS Middle School Choir’s rendition of ‘Look To This Day’, by Bob Chilcott, was judged as having ‘a strong and energetic opening’ and it was noted that ‘the rhythmical framework fits very well with the piano accompaniment.’ They also performed ‘Lake Isle of Innisfree’, by Eleanor Daley. The Voccine choral group performed two songs by Bob Chilcott, ‘Safekeeping, Spell No 4’ and ‘Bring Lost Creatures Home, Spell No 2.’
The adjudicator remarked ‘You sing with ease at the audience’ with ‘a good feel and energy’ coupled with ‘good vocal technique.’ As the judges remarked, the girls are very comfortable singing in front of an audience, testament to the many hours of effort they put into choir practice, as well as the fact that they clearly enjoy their performances very much. Other WGS girls, including Juniors, across various entry classes, also achieved prizes.

Yvonne Shelton Gives Us The Gospel On The Tracks Of Her Years You might not recognise Yvonne Shelton in the street, but chances are you’ll have heard her voice somewhere on a concert stage or in a church, or from a radio. Manchester’s status as a creative hive of pop music is well established, but other avenues and alleyways of musical creativity perhaps less so. The established African-Caribbean community has also played its part in mapping the A-Z of the city’s musical landscape, providing us with many great talents, and Yvonne Shelton most definitely belongs among that number. Growing up in Moss Side, with her Jamaican family’s strong faith and her innate vocal talent, Yvonne’s ascension to her church’s gospel choir was inevitable. During her schooling at Levenshulme High School for Girls, weekends were consumed by practise and performance in the highly regarded choir at Longsight’s Church of God (Seventh Day). Of course, just like any other teenager, Yvonne was equally drawn to the less than sacred attractions of Bowie, Prince and Stevie Wonder. Well, they say the devil has all the best music and she certainly experienced parental and peer pressure because of her love for all music. Yvonne and Smooth Edge are performing at our annual charity Winter Ball on Sat 12 Nov at The Midland Hotel.
Her choir toured nationally, including the Royal Albert Hall with George Michael, and provided backing for Gloria Estefan and Foreigner, among many others, too. They also recorded in studios, providing Yvonne with valuable experience from an early age. Joining The Challengers, a gospel and inspirational band, saw her regularly performing in venues like The Band On The Wall. Because she was only 15 and underage for many of these venues, she had to hide away at the back, perched on a stool, and out of the spotlight’s glare. All the weekend gigging affected her schooling, but she did go on to study Fashion at Hollings Toast Rack. Though she loved her studies, she’d already made up her mind that singing was going to be her life. Especially as she was already earning a living doing it. Her choral work had been predominately harmony singing, so she was always adept at harmonising her voice to meet the requirements of the studio producers. She could go in, hear a song for the first time and very quickly get it down on tape. Soon, she was singing on everything: jingles, adverts and pop songs, and with the advent of Manchester’s dance scene, she was always in demand for vocal work. She’d never differentiated between lead or backing vocals, which is why she’s not as well known as some of her contempories, such as Rowetta or Heather Small, but she was certainly regarded as their equal. A Top of the Pops appearance with Evolution sealed her fate with the choir, but her reputation as a professional singer was gaining strength. She’s sung with virtually all of the city’s sizeable music talents and continues her session work today, as well as her current lead vocal duties with the Hacienda Classic Gigs, which is currently touring to sold-out venues across the country. For the last two years, she’s also been the lead singer with Manchester’s Smooth Edge, a very tight and versatile soul-funk and smooth jazz band that can tailor their performances for any event or show. Yvonne numbers them amongst some of the very best musicians that she’s ever worked with, and her vocal range perfectly covers and complements the band’s comprehensive and varied set list. Catching a performance of this popular band is perhaps the best way to fully appreciate her great talent. Pop music would be unrecognisable without gospel’s seminal influence on Elvis, Little Richard and a multitude of early pop pioneers. The devil might well have had his pick of the best, but Yvonne Shelton and her gospel peers have certainly put up a good fight to straighten that score!

Third solo album from one-half of Everything but the Girl, arriving two years after his second and a mere thirty-three years after his debut. Fever Dream continues in the vein of its predecessor with more perfect pop music, timeless melodies and classic arrangements all the way, but this time around with a slightly rockier, dirtier sound, courtesy of Bernard Butler on guitar.
Something of a concept album (no - don’t stop reading!) from Natasha Khan, AKA Bat for Lashes. The Bride follows the imagined narrative of a woman whose fiancé is killed in a car crash on the way to their wedding. She then decides to take the honeymoon alone. The album is inspired by a short film written and directed by Khan herself, called ‘I Do‘. An ambitious premise, but it’s pulled off with aplomb.

GODZiLLa! Now seems as good a time as any to tip the hat to a Japanese modern classic – a performance vehicle so monstrous they nicknamed it Godzilla. The Nissan GT-r. uropean supercar purists sometimes sneer at the GT-R, criticising its blunt edges and ungainly size, but that’s just snobbery and betrays insecurity on the part of the critic. Certainly, the Nissan’s classic status won’t come from its looks; it may not belong in an art gallery or a Concours d'Elégance, like a Ferrari or an Alfa Romeo, but where it has truly earned its legendary status is where it matters: out on the racetrack.

In fact, when the current GT-R model debuted in 2007, other supercar makers’ jealously held records and awards tumbled like autumn leaves. The Nissan was put to the test by magazines, TV journalists and racing drivers across the world, and time and time again it proved to be simply unbeatable. First, it crushed everything else in its price range, and then, when pitted against more and more exotic supercars, it continued to trounce the competition round every track imaginable. Eventually, the only cars that could edge past it were top of the range Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis that cost at least twice the price.

Japfest, named the Skyline its number one Japanese icon, and deservedly so. A 20year-old Skyline GT-R could still outperform pretty much anything on the road today, and in its day was known as the definitive Japanese performance car, thanks to its starring role in PlayStation games like Gran Turismo, and later in films such as The Fast and The Furious. Now, the newest generation of the GT-R, facelifted for 2017, has been unveiled. It is still expected to be capable of dominating all comers in terms of performance, thanks as ever to that inimitably Japanese design philosophy: extremely advanced, complex and yet ultra-reliable technology. Granted, 570 horsepower is a hell of a lot, but it’s the details everywhere, from grip to aerodynamics, that will make it such an efficient predator out on the tarmac.
No wonder the aforementioned European supercar owners had their noses put out of joint. The GT-R is in the news today for two reasons. First, its predecessor, the original Skyline GT-R, was voted Europe’s favourite Japanese car ever. The biggest celebration of Japanese cars and culture in Europe,

Perhaps the biggest selling point will be the price. admittedly, the entry level cost has steadily crept up to around the £80k mark over the years, but you can bet that you’ll find nothing else with these capabilities anywhere near this price.
