Atelier – step into a wonderful online world of pre-loved fashion

A year on from the launch of her online business, The Atelier World, we reconnected with Michelle Payne to chat about her dedication to all things designer and discover the magic (and investment power) of pre-loved As a seasoned buyer and seller of pre-loved luxury, Michelle knew that she could utilise her marketing communications and customer service experience to create this exciting female-founded venture and provide a pre-loved portal that not only delivered the designer goods (at competitive prices) but served up an unbeatable, boutique-esque customer experience and created a unique community where connoisseurs of luxury could share the label love. North-West-based Atelier allows people to buy, sell and even swap luxury designer items from an endless list of iconic names and labels. It’s a veritable sartorial candy store – a feast for the eyes and filled with delicious fashion treats. We couldn’t wait to find out how this one-stop shop for exquisite bags, shoes, clothing and accessories was developing... Hi, Michelle! How’s the first year of business been? We’ve grown so quickly! Our client base has skyrocketed and we now have buyers and sellers from right across the globe. Client relationships seem very important to you, this isn’t just a ‘click, buy, goodbye’ service? Most def initely not. For me, it's about giving people the best experience; everything from initial communication and payment through to wrapping items beautifully and building lasting client relationships. Clients can also come into the studio to view items in person or book a virtual appointment.

10 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

Is there a typical Atelier customer? There really isn't! We have everyone from first-time buyers to serious collectors. What’s been lovely is the creation of a community of Atelier friends, people who are so incredibly passionate about luxury items, and not in a ‘status’ or ‘show-offy’ way – they just appreciate their beauty and have, until now, had nowhere to share that excitement and enthusiasm. Pre-loved fashion is big news right now, your timing was impeccable... Definitely the right time, the right place! In the past few years, I think the whole perception of the pre-loved industry has completely changed. Now, those who buy pre-loved really own it, people are proud to

say, ‘I bought this pre-loved’. A recent article in Forbes stated that in 2019, the secondhand/consignment market ‘expanded 21 times faster than conventional apparel commerce did’. Covid has had a big, big impact too. I think we are becoming more conscious of how we’re spending. People are also realising that designer items, when cared for well, can prove great investments for the future. In fact, our tagline is ‘luxury doesn’t have a timespan’. How quickly can items rise in price? I bought a Hermès Kelly handbag in Christmas 2019 and could sell this on the resale market for significantly higher (not that I would!). It’s little wonder that divorce lawyers now do inventories of handbags as By Lisa Mcmahon

ADVERTORIAL

that are really rare, a part of fashion history. More importantly, everything has a story and that’s something me and a lot of others are so passionate about. For example, we’ve just had a big consignment from a very famous ‘90s supermodel. Can I tell you who she is? Sorry, no! We sign non-disclosure agreements with many of our clients. Confidentiality and trust are so important to us.

part of settlements and that bags top luxury investment indexes! Items like the Hermès Birkin and Kelly are created in limited numbers, so you can’t just go into the shop and buy one. It can take years to get the one you want, so a lot of people turn to the resale market to access these items. Any advice for people on caring for their investments? Keep the receipts and keep the packaging, it’ll all give you more bang for your buck when you come to sell! Purchasers are very discerning, and an item’s provenance will add so much value. For many people, there’s a lot more to these luxurious items than just the ‘buck’? Absolutely! It’s about the fact that you can pick up pieces from certain collections

We love how enthusiastic you are about the stories behind the styles... Oh, I really am! Recently, a lady sold the first Chanel handbag she ever bought (she’d had it twenty years) to a girl buying her first-ever Chanel handbag. I just love that! It’s really special. And, of course, pre-loved is great news for the planet? Pre-2020, there’d been such a rise in fast, throwaway fashion. According to charity Wrap,

around 140 million pounds’ worth of clothing is sent to UK landfills every year! That’s astonishing. But now, there’s a distinct shift away from such high levels of consumption, people are seeing that investing in quality fashion works out less cost per wear. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re moving in the right direction. We’re about to launch a campaign #ShopYourWardrobe – people pledging to wear nothing but clothes they already own for a week. We also work with a charity called Smart Works, which repurposes fashion in a very positive way.

Finally, can you share what’s new for 2022? We’ll be growing the team, developing the buying side of the business and investing in new technologies... there’s a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon! Watch this space.

TRIED&TESTED

Emily Fitzgibbons popped in to the newly opened Anna Baker Skin Clinic located in Ancoats, to try the revolutionary treatment everyone’s talking about - Profhilo® What is Profhilo®?

How many treatments will I need?

Containing the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid on the market, this is commonly referred to as the ‘the ultimate anti ageing treatment to restore skin vitality, hydration & firmness.’ It is a highly innovative and ultra pure patented formula that has the ability to deliver sustained levels of moisture to the skin, as well as stimulating the production of 4 different types of collagen, for a fresher, more youthful look. Said to remodel all layers of the skin to regenerate and strengthen the skin, for an unbeatable glow. This is a versatile treatment suited to men and women, and can be used on the face, neck, hands, chest and the body.

A series of 2-3 treatments is initially required at 4 weekly intervals, which can be maintained longer term. All patients who visit Anna Baker Skin Clinic will undertake a detailed medical consultation and assessment of their areas of concern. This allows Anna to approximate the number of treatments on a case by case basis. The patient’s age, size of area being treated, and baseline condition of the skin, are all contributory factors.

Who will Profhilo® work best for?

"It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Emily to clinic for her Profhilo treatment. This revolutionary skin treatment gives lasting hydration & luminosity through it’s unique firming properties-with no added chemicals. This is a must-have treatment to get that beautiful glow in time for the festive season.”

It is an excellent choice for menopausal women looking to restore moisture at a cellular level and restore the glow and luminosity to their skin. It’s also a great treatment option for brides in prep for their wedding, looking to achieve a brightening, tightening and hydrating effect. It’s a great option for men too, and for skin transitioning into winter months needing the high and lasting levels of pure hyaluronic acid.

Does it hurt? If like me you have a low pain threshold, one of the first questions you might ask is how much it hurts. With an initial first sharp scratch, and a small bee sting type sensation to follow, it’s not the most comfortable of treatments, but it’s certainly bearable, and is over within minutes.

Variety the Children’s Charity Two of the North West’s foremost business leaders Richard Ainscough and Karina Jadhav joined Anton Du Beke, The Nolans, TV chef James Martin, music industry giant Mike Chapman and many others to celebrate at Variety’s Legends of Industry Awards 2021

Variety, the Children’s Charity, Legends of Industry Awards honour and celebrate people who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen field of business and industry whilst raising crucial funds to support sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people. In the UK, there are more than 1.3 million disabled children and young people and nearly 4 million children living in poverty. Variety, the Children’s Charity, is dedicated to improving the lives of these children. The charity’s help includes grants for specialist disability equipment and wheelchairs that aren’t available through statutory services; adapted, accessible transport for SEND schools and other non-prof it organisations through its Sunshine Coaches programme; and memorable day trips through its Great Days Out programme.

Business leading lights and celebrities from the worlds of TV and radio broadcasting, dance, music, comedy, the culinary arts and elite international sport were in Manchester to receive their Variety, the Children’s Charity, Legends of Industry Awards. This year’s honours list included commercial property entrepreneur Richard Ainscough, New Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke, Grammy-nominated music industry hit-maker Mike Chapman, restaurant and hospitality innovator Karina Jadhav (Menagerie, Manchester), music and TV personalities The Nolans, veteran broadcaster Tony Blackburn, charity champion and first-ever recipients of a Local Legends of

Paralympian rower Lauren Rowles MBE and comedic alter-ego character Keith Lemon also received a Legends of Industry Award, but were unable to attend the evening. Variety, the Children’s Charity, Development Director for the North West, Lyn Staunton, said: “We are deeply honoured to bestow awards upon some of the finest people who achieved so much in their chosen careers. We have been overwhelmed by the support of our event sponsors and our dedicated supporters in Manchester, who have Variety in their hearts and are there to help as we work to support sick, disabled and disadvantaged children. “The evening is the flagship event for the charity and the night was a huge success.”

POSTCARD

from Andalucía Absolutely loving my new life in Andalucía Especially as Christmas seems to have come rather early for me this year When we moved to Spain, I was sure my happiness would come from waking up to blue skies every day and discovering all that this amazing country has to offer. But I cannot lie. My new-found bliss is down to two things. Two rather buff, ripped, young things. Their names: Juan and Javier. Bad Lady Muck. Allow me to explain. Remember when I mistakenly rented 2,500 square metres of land near Casares? Yep, that cock up. One of my most impressive, even if I say so myself. Turns out that’s rather a lot of land. Three and a half football pitches, to be

exact. Something Lord Muck has found hilarious; even more annoyingly, he has refused to help, opting instead to head to Finca Cortesin for a round of golf most days. So, what’s a girl to do? Hire help, obviously. Young, buff, ripped, tanned help; my landlord’s great-nephew Juan and his equally gorgeous amigo Javier. Both 25-year-olds are trying to make it big as kite surfers in Tarifa, but as they grew up on farms, they leapt at the chance to earn a bit of extra cash three afternoons a week working for La Extrana Dama Inglesa aka ‘The Strange English Lady’. A little arrangement I seem to have somehow forgotten to tell Lord Muck about. Oops. Much to his Lordship’s puzzlement, for the past month, I have stopped nagging him to help. Instead, on the days when the boys are due, I leap out of bed with a spring in my step, hopping into my ancient VW and singing my little heart out as I wind my way up to my land. I spend the morning merrily picking pomegranates and dates, weeding my zanahorias (carrots), tending my newly planted espinacas (spinach) and sowing lechugas (lettuces), but all the time, I’m watching the gate,

waiting like a giddy schoolgirl for my kite surfers to arrive at 2pm. And weirdly, quite a few of my girlfriends have suddenly got hooked on grow-your-own too, joining me most days now, lip glosses at the ready as Juan and Javier’s campervan comes up the drive. It really doesn’t help that with temperatures still in the seventies, the first thing the guys do is take off their t-shirts, then get to work, wielding their tools, bare-chested, Poldark-scything style. Which leaves us sad, old birds weak at the knees, hearts racing, fanning ourselves under the shade of my avocado trees as we proceed to drool particularly unattractively. And I have to say, they have done a fine job. On the land. Not just on our libidos. One football pitch has been cleared, ready for my grapevines to be planted, the stone compost areas are built and the hedgerows pruned. And his Lordship is none the wiser. Or so I thought. But through my binoculars, that’s definitely his Range Rover I spy coming up the mountain. And he appears to have that suspicious look on his face, the one he wore when he’d rumbled that my sudden interest in swimming coincided with the men’s water polo team’s training sessions. Right. Must dash. Need to get them back into their clothes at least…

ENTERTAINMENT

We live in a beautiful part of the world. Here's some ideas for getting outside and exploring it

BOULDERING FOR BEGINnERS A British winter, even the milder ones we tend to get round these parts, may not seem like the ideal conditions for outdoor rock climbing, however, climbing relies a lot on friction and when the temperature is colder, the friction is better, so even a beginner can get out on the rocks. Bouldering is a great way to get into the sport. Given that it usually involves heights of less than 20ft, it doesn’t require as much technical equipment as rock climbing and is safe, provided you learn how to fall onto crash mats correctly. Here in the North West, we are never far from an indoor climbing wall, club or specialist shop where you can find experts for advice on where and when to get outdoors. Ellis Brigham on Manchester’s Deansgate is a good start. Staff there are friendly and knowledgeable and can tell you the best spots less than an hour from town and when groups are heading out.

FOREST SCHOoL

I’ve always been determined to bring up my three daughters to be wild and adventurous lovers of the outdoors and I’m delighted to say that even before school age, they are all hooked on camping, exploring and getting mucky in all weathers. For that reason, we’re all big fans of Forever Wild Forest School, whose highly trained and fully insured leaders hold sessions at Didsbury Sports Ground and Wilmslow’s Pownall Hall School. Since my kids were old enough to walk, they’ve been attending these gatherings regularly throughout the year and enjoying the really well-thought-out menu of nature activities, ranging from foraging and crafts to shelter building and (highly supervised) making campfire snacks. Forever Wild also does birthday parties and having held one for a toddler one crisp, clear winter’s day, I can confirm that every child and parent finished the day a Forever Wild convert.

KEeP IT INTERESTING You and your dog probably won’t fancy so much walking when it’s cold and wet, but walk you must. A really simple and powerful tip from canine psychologists is never to stick to the same familiar routes. Just by changing the scenery each time – exploring new roads and paths or even driving to a different part of town – you can transform shorter winter walks into new adventures. You’ll love seeing their little doggy brain going and their nose sniffing like mad as they explore the unfamiliar surroundings, plus according to mental health experts, there are huge mindfulness benefits for you as you switch off autopilot and take in new sights and sounds.

Why family values are Gemma’s personal motivator to give her clients the best possible service It was the unplanned birth of her son, Josh, at the age of 18 that changed Gemma’s life forever “Sadly, the relationship with my partner had broken down,” explains Gemma. “Fortunately, my mum stepped in, initially supporting me financially and emotionally, helping me to cope with this abrupt change to my life direction. It meant I was able to complete my education while Josh was happily ensconced at nursery.” By 2004, at the age of 23, Gemma had taken the first step of her career, joining Northern Rock as a trainee mortgage adviser. “My choice of a career in financial services came from a time when I’d helped a friend who was heavily in debt; on credit cards and loans, all with really high interest rates. I worked out a way for him to consolidate everything onto one loan and save a significant amount of interest. It set me off on my career path. I’d really enjoyed the process; it gave me a great boost to think I’d turned it around. He still had the debt, but it was far more manageable.” Gemma says bringing up Josh as a single mum, while financially supporting them both, wasn’t easy. “Josh was diagnosed with the neurodevelopment disorder ADHD in primary school, which meant managing his behaviour was challenging to say the least. His inability to focus, alongside occasional bizarre, impulsive behaviour, meant attracting unwanted attention from those who made me self-conscious about the fact I was such a young mum.” She continues: “I must admit to feeling paranoid at times, believing people were constantly judging me for what I perceived to be thought of as an irresponsible young mum. This gave me the determination to succeed and provide Josh with not just a safe, loving home, but also a secure financial future.” Gemma’s career notched up a gear when she joined RBS as a financial planning manager in 2006. Caring for Josh meant she’d been unable to go on to university, so she was determined to become chartered. The next five years was spent studying in her spare time, taking exams while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience across all areas of wealth management. “I left RBS in 2011 to join Wesleyan,” says Gemma, “initially specialising in offering comprehensive financial advice for lawyers, including

their personal and business planning. Later, I added to my specialisms by providing advice to doctors working within the NHS and in private practice. I also worked as an adviser at both Towry and Prudential to gain more experience. "After so many years of head-down working, studying and caring for Josh, you can’t imagine the sense of pride and achievement I felt when I was able to move out of our flat and buy my f irst detached house in Manchester for us both. “In April 2018, I founded Darcy Financial Planning Ltd, with an amazing team behind me. My focus is on financial lifestyle planning and guiding my clients towards their financially secure future. “This year, I hit the grand age of 40 – and Josh, 22 – with the financial goals I set for myself all those years ago now achieved. We’ve come a long way together, Josh and I, much of the journey at times difficult and challenging, but I am so very proud of the young man he has become.” Gemma continues: “What I’ve gained from the experience has been extremely beneficial. It’s shown me just how people's lives can take them down a vastly different route to the one they envisaged, but that it’s not the end of the world.” Having experienced so much throughout her journey so far, Gemma loves that she is now able to empathise and relate one hundred percent to whatever her clients are going through: “I derive so much pleasure helping my clients find solutions that work for them so they can look positively into the future.” And what about Gemma personally? “Well I have, of course, set myself new financial goals, this time with built-in flexibility to enjoy a healthy work-life balance. I now give myself space to breathe, to do the things I love and to spend time with my family and friends. After all, planning a quality lifestyle is crucial.”

Covent Garden Markets

Harrods Possibly one of the most well-known shopping landmarks in the whole of the country, Harrods is often dubbed as ‘the world’s most famous department store’. Dating back to the 1800s, it's synonymous with high class and opulence. With more than 300 departments and 1.1 million square feet of selling space, it's also the largest department store in Europe. Plus, Harrods is home to over 5,000 brands, so you can shop designer fashion and accessories, indulgent beauty, fine jewellery and watches, food, furniture and much more at London’s one-stop-shop for luxury Christmas presents or treats for yourself and your loved ones.

Covent Garden for sure has some of London’s most Instagrammable markets to visit at Christmas. Once home to the world-famous fruit and vegetable market, Covent Garden’s Apple Market continues to support market traders, offering a range of unique crafts and goods, such as handmade jewellery, prints, watercolours, antiques and collectables. Additionally, the East Colonnade Market is located (you guessed it) on the east side of Covent Garden’s Market Building and is filled with handmade soaps, sweet treats and jewellery stalls – the perfect place to pick up a gift. Be sure to visit Covent Garden’s Winter Village too – it'll fill you with that extra special Christmas spirit.

The restaurant’s incredible event space boasts an ‘Event of the Month’ and has hosted conferences, business meetings, and theatre shows with Russell Brand and Simon Amstell. William Lees-Jones – keeping brewing perfection in the family Managing Director of J.W. Lees Brewery since 2003, genial William Lees-Jones leads the Middleton-based business that his ancestor John Lees founded and built as Greengate Brewery in 1828. J.W. Lees’ cosy, oak-paneled boardroom, originally John’s dining room, has overseen 190 years of challenges as well as lighter moments, including hosting TV location shoots, Julie Goodyear’s casting as Corrie’s Bet Lynch and doubtless many, many more. Surrounded by paintings of their forebears, William and the majority fifth and sixth generation board of directors understand their legacy, their communal responsibilities and their need for cohesion. In fact, it was the fear of dissension that, in 1955, motivated William’s grandfather to buy out the rest of the family. This prompted William’s father, Richard, 25 and midway through his accountancy training, and his chartered surveyor uncle, Christopher, to then join their father. It’s all hands on deck at the family’s amicable, top-down Greengate Brewery. Even aficionados start at the bottom – sweeping up, ‘mashing’ the beer in a kettle-like device and driving the dray. Now in their late 80s, both 1950s’ Lees-Jones recruits were the first Northerners permitted by the London Brewers Company to wear the Master Brewers’ chains of office for their portraits hanging in the boardroom. Ultimately, the clan’s diverse abilities, its mutual support and collaborative outlook have helped maintain product excellence, sure-footed, careful company expansion and ongoing employee care and development. Small wonder J.W. Lees now ranks in the UK’s top ten breweries. Classics graduate William, after 10 years in advertising in London, returned up north in 1994. Married to southerner Ariel, the father of four and High Sheriff of Cheshire during 2012 recalls: “There was no pressure to join the business. In fact, I’d always considered people working for a family firm probably were unable to find a job anywhere else! I knew I had to prove to myself, that I could do this thing called ‘life’ independently before coming back.”

Now approaching its bicentenary, J.W. Lees has reinvented itself over the last two decades. Despite Covid’s devastating impact on the entire hospitality sector, the company, via generous government aid, has avoided closing any hostelries. The business – which incorporates J.W. Lees Brewery, J.W. Lees Pubs and Willoughby’s Wine Merchants – has historically served a predominantly North Manchester clientele, but now owns 146 higher quality establishments throughout the North West and North Wales, from Preston down to Holyhead, employs 1,400 staff and makes two thirds of its promotions internally. Determined to retain its personal family touch, each year, J.W. Lees looks to buy and also sell half a dozen pubs – not ‘en masse’ but one at a time. Topping the J.W. Lees acquisition list are its trio of prestigious hotels –the Alderley Edge Hotel, The Stanneylands in Wilmslow and the Trearddur Bay Hotel on Anglesey. And watch out for the impending Aviator development to be built on the site of Woodford’s former aerodrome. Both William and cousin Michael, a Bass-trained master brewer, work full-time at Greengate. "Family businesses are about the long term and hoping our decisions can stand the test of time,” says William. “We re-opened in April and are moving from survival mode into getting through this winter and resetting the business. Our pubs are clean and safe. I do believe that because people have been cooped up, they are ready and willing to come back to us.” Interestingly, despite the loss of EU workers, product shortages, transport problems, the high price of British wines and lack of French imports, Covid struck even deeper than Brexit. But determined to avoid turning their ‘Dynasty into a Dallas’, William concludes: ‘We’ve always worried – especially during the pandemic – that we’ll be the generation to ‘turn the lights off’.” The innovative, self-aware Lees-Jones family is committed to ensuring nothing could be further from the truth.

A new level of precision for joint replacement

In October 2018, Spire Manchester Hospital was proud to be the 昀rst facility in the North West of England to introduce Mako, pioneering robotic technology that has transformed the way hip and knee replacements are carried out. Now, three years on, the use of Mako has gone from strength to strength, setting the precedent for exemplary care within the private hospital sector. The Mako robot offers the best of both worlds – the control of a highly skilled and experienced consultant, coupled with robot technology which enables the consultant to achieve the optimum degree of accuracy.

Compared to traditional surgery, Mako robotassisted surgery has been proven to: – Signi昀cantly reduce pain after surgery – Allow a faster recovery in early knee movement – Perform joint replacement surgery with two – three times the accuracy In 2021, Spire Manchester Hospital invested in the use of a second Mako robot so that even more patients could be treated. Since we launched this pioneering technology, we’ve treated 1000 patients from around the UK and received outstanding feedback from those who have bene昀tted.

Access the right team, at the right me. What to do if you get injured on the slopes This 2021/2022 ski season, more than a million Britons will leave the UK and head to the slopes to take part in skiing and snowboarding. Whilst these sports are exhilara ng and provide excellent exercise, they can be dangerous and accidents do occur, even when you take all the necessary precau ons. More than a 1,000 UK residents get injured every day during the snow season, with sprains, fractures and breaks extremely common, and OrthTeam consultants regularly provide medical advice to many of these pa ents overseas and expedite treatment once they are back home. If you or a family member does get injured and are told that you/they need treatment for the injury, it can be a very daun ng situa on and it’s important that you make an informed decision as to whether you have treatment abroad or delay it un l you arrive back in the UK. Our experts have put together a quick guide below to help you determine which injuries require immediate treatment and what can poten ally wait. Disloca ons This is when a joint comes apart and is extremely painful. The most common ski disloca on is in the shoulder. This injury requires immediate reduc on of the disloca on at an urgent care facility abroad, however, further treatment therea er can o en wait. Fractures Open fractures are where the bone communicates with the skin through a wound. These require urgent

a en on abroad. Closed fractures, however, can o en wait. Some mes, if the bone is very severely displaced and out of posi on, it can be improved by manipula on under local anaesthe c abroad and placed in a plaster back slab to maintain a reasonable posi on. Defini ve treatment can then be planned back in the UK. Ligament injuries Almost all ligament injuries can wait un l you arrive back in the UK, but we recommend you are assessed urgently by a specialist on your return. The most common ligament injuries that occur on the slopes are to the knee and the thumb; with ‘Skier’s thumb’ one of the most common snow sports ligament injury. Spinal and head injuries Severe spinal and head injuries o en require specialist assessment abroad. Always wear a helmet, and in children, consider a spinal support. These may prevent head and spinal injuries from colliding into a solid object, such as a tree, and can also offer protec on from being hit by another outofcontrol skier.

The OrthTeam are a group of highly skilled consultants based at the multi-million-pound OrthTeam Centre in Didsbury, Manchester. The facility offers patients world-class expertise combined with state-of-the-art diagnostics

I've had my L5S1 (lumbosacral joint) removed via a full lumbar fusion, however, I still suffer from sciatica pain. Do I need a scan? Around 80 to 90% of patients undergoing any form of lumbar spinal surgery for leg pain (sciatica) experience significant improvement in this symptom. Persistent leg pain does warrant further investigation with a clinical examination by a specialist and post-operative imaging such as an X-ray and MRI scan. OrthTeam Spinal Neurosurgeons, Mr John Leach and Mr Ankur Saxena.

Following a fall whilst running, I can’t put pressure on my knee, what could be the issue?

I feel a burning pain down the back of my calf and ankle, is this a cause of concern?

It all depends on the mechanism and severity of injury. A fall with a minor blow to the front of the knee can result in bone bruising or minor cartilage damage to the patella (kneecap). These usually cause pain for a few weeks but then settle. If they don’t, then seek the advice of a knee surgeon.

These symptoms certainly warrant assessment and could indicate a trapped nerve in the lumbar spine and require an assessment by a specialist.

If the fall is more severe and the patient cannot walk, it could be a fracture or major ligament injury, which requires urgent assessment. Mr Rob Gilbert, OrthTeam Consultant Sports Knee Surgeon.

EXPERTS

Ask the Expert Sam Gibbons Sam Gibbons is the Head of Preparatory at Manchester High School for Girls and is also an Inspector of Schools for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. She has a wealth of knowledge of the independent sector and is passionate about providing children with a happy and fulfilled education

What are the benefits of independent education? Independent education is just that – independent; free from government directives with respect to the curriculum and class size. Adapting the curriculum and the extra-curricular opportunities to meet the exact needs of the school community is a privilege that independent schools do not take for granted. A consequence of this approach is that young people feel valued, knowing that learning opportunities and teaching style are all designed for them.

Why choose a single sex school? The significant benefit to single-sex education is the removal of gender stereotypes. They have the opportunity to explore fully all the education opportunities available to them and excel in subjects and roles regardless of perceived gender-weighted expectations to become resilient, self-confident individuals. The desire to be - and become - anything they want is a powerful motivator, underpinned by the successes of their female role models.

What can I do to prepare my child for school? Read, read and read some more! Language acquisition and a wide vocabulary are essential bedrocks to learning and mental wellbeing. If children have the language to describe how they are feeling, they are much happier. Talk, talk and talk some more! Young children model what they hear and absorb everything you are telling them about the world and if you want to cultivate some early number work - make it practical and fun!

As a mum of three, she recognises the demands placed on women and how this can lead to many of them ignoring their pelvic health symptoms and avoiding seeking the right help

What is a Mummy MOT®? Following childbirth, many women experience weakness in their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. A Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and C-section deliveries. It is one of the UK’s most comprehensive postnatal check-ups. Pregnancy and childbirth are life-changing experiences and we are here to help, whether you gave birth six weeks ago or many years ago. The Mummy MOT® is recommended from six weeks postnatal, but it’s never too late to make an appointment. Once postnatal, always postnatal!

We offer postnatal clinical pilates, which can be delivered one-to-one or in our weekly postnatal pilates class. Ask the Expert Ms Julia Langford Choosing a new school Identifying which school is right for your child is one of the most important decisions any parent has to make. Ms Julia Langford, headteacher at The Ryleys School in Alderley Edge, has prepared some recommendations to help you choose the best school for you and your child

How can I identify the right school for my child? What would encourage your child to learn, progress and develop? Find out whether the school offers a broad curriculum with specialised teaching. Quality teaching will ensure your child’s needs and interests are met and their potential maximised. In addition to this, details on independent inspections are publicly available for all schools. This provides an independent, objective view of the school, which may well confirm your own first impressions.

What should I look out for on a school tour/open day? Nothing quite compares to visiting a school, meeting the headteacher and teachers and seeing the pupils in action. Ask questions and take notes. Do children experience diverse opportunities? Are prospectus promises fulfilled? Research the school website and follow news stories on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The Ryleys School would like to wish you every success in your search for the right school for you and your child. If you are interested in visiting the school, please contact reception@theryleys.com

Are extracurricular activities important? Joining a football team, dance club, swimming team or chess club can be the important first step in children making close friends, who may well stay with them for their entire life. Look for schools that offer quality and varied extracurricular programmes. This will help your child find like-minded children to bond with and allow them to experience new activities that inspire them to broaden their horizons and step out of their comfort zone. The Ryleys School offers over 35 extracurricular clubs.

Sam Platt Sam Platt is the Head of the Vegetarian Society Cookery School and has a wealth of experience, having worked in the catering industry for more than 15 years. She frequently leads cookery classes at the school and at events across the country to teach people how to make fantastic vegetarian and vegan food

What’s the easiest way to start eating less meat?

How do you know you’re getting the right nutrients in veggie/vegan foods?

What would I learn on your cookery classes?

Start a little at a time with something familiar. Try using meat alternatives instead of meat once a week in a main meal. For example, you could replace the beef mince in your favourite bolognaise with veggie mince. You can use exactly the same recipe with the same flavourings and accompaniments. It will taste just as delicious and be better for you and the planet.

The same way as with any other foods. Everyone should eat a well-balanced diet with lots of variation and plenty of fruit and veg. When following a vegetarian diet, make sure you’re replacing the protein you might get from meat with other protein sources, like pulses, tofu, eggs or soya. Lots of foods are now fortified with extra vitamins and minerals, so it’s easy to make sure you get what you need.

How to make delicious food! We concentrate on having fun and learning to make great-tasting dishes. Our classes are for anyone, whether you are veggie or vegan or not. We want people to learn new skills they can put to use at home again and again. It’s a great introduction to new and exciting flavours and ingredients.

Meet the relationship experts The experienced matrimonial and family team at Top 100 law firm Ward Hadaway, Manchester

When it comes to relationships, the North West-based family and matrimonial team at Top 100 law firm Ward Hadaway know a thing or two. They have over a century of combined experience supporting couples and families as relationships falter. This rich experience, combined with empathy, honesty and understanding, makes this team of litigators the very best in the business. Here, they explain how their focus remains resolutely on supporting clients on their journey to new beginnings. Christine Barker, Partner Christine is a highly respected lawyer with over 43 years of experience working within family and matrimonial law. She lives in Cheshire with her husband and is a mum to a grown-up son. “Our job is all about people. The most important thing for me is to truly listen and understand my clients, their personal situations and their aspirations for the future. I’m often talking to people at a very turbulent and difficult time in their lives. The idea of starting over, without their existing partner, can seem overwhelming. I’ve been doing this for 43 years and I am as dedicated now as I’ve ever been. The idea of helping people to reach a happier life drives me. It’s my role to listen and provide clarity. It’s not uncommon for people to think they know what they want from a divorce, but when I speak with them, I’m able to present all the options honestly and realistically, being very clear about the potential outcomes. Often, the options are better than they had expected. “Every relationship is different and I take a consultative, bespoke approach to every single case. My experience allows me to look at the whole picture and deliver quality advice that leads to the best outcome. The decisions you make at this critical point in your life can potentially affect the rest of it. So, you must work with a lawyer

She lives in Cheshire with her family and has a daughter and two step-sons. “With experience comes possibility. It’s important to me that I understand precisely what my client’s aspirations are for their future – and that I am constantly using my experience to spot opportunities that deliver the best resolutions. Recently, I was acting for a client in a case that would ordinarily have taken up to six months to resolve. During proceedings, I spotted an opportunity to help all parties achieve their end goal more quickly. Within two hours, the matter was settled. That time in limbo, which is so daunting for many couples who are separating for good, was greatly reduced without compromising the result. “With the best team by your side, family court proceedings are not something to be feared. Having been through a divorce myself, I know first-hand how emotional, unsettling and difficult this period in your life can be. Our job is to take away the uncertainty. To be an assuring and understanding partner in your corner and give you the confidence to make decisions about your future with clarity and purpose.” Rachel Ward, Partner Rachel recently joined the team at Ward Hadaway, having spent her entire career as a specialist litigator working in family and matrimonial law. I work with many young professional couples who separate as well as longestablished families whose parents have simply decided to go their separate ways. David Burrows, Associate David has worked with Christine, Liz and Rachael practising family and matrimonial law for nearly a decade. He lives in Manchester city centre.

“Our specialist team have worked together for nearly a decade and we all have the same outlook – to get the best resolution for our clients. We are consultative in our approach. That even comes down to small, but vital, details like how and when we meet to discuss your case. This can be tricky for some people, particularly if they are in a combative relationship. We have clients come to our houses, meet in coffee shops, over Teams, via WhatsApp or through intermediaries – often other family members who are helping them exit a diff icult relationship. Whatever the circumstances, we’re here to listen, understand and drive the change that is needed to get you to a new life. We’re here for you.”

“Choosing to part ways in any relationship is never easy, but the long-term benef its of ending an unhappy relationship in a dignified manner often outweigh the short-term pain of taking that initial step in the process. Not every relationship stands the test of time, but it’s brave to admit that and to seek help in resolving it for the greater good of everyone involved. Education News Alderley Edge School for Girls receives national award nomination

Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is celebrating after being nationally recognised for its mental health and wellbeing support for students and staff by being shortlisted for an award f rom the Independent Schools Association. AESG has been named as a finalist in the category for Excellence and Innovation in Mental Health and Wellbeing, with the winner being announced in November. This shortlisting came after judges were impressed with the forward-thinking and proactive approach to both pupil and staff wellbeing throughout the last academic

year. Judges were also impressed at the innovative projects implemented throughout the pandemic that helped support pupils and staff to be more resilient, reduce anxiety levels and promote a positive work-life balance.

Alongside these programmes, the whole school participated in Mental Health Awareness Week and Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, supplemented by a challenge to maintain their physical fitness by virtually running from AESG to New York.

These innovative projects were implemented across the school from Early Years to Sixth Form, allowing each girl to benefit from a tailored programme of support. The Early Years Team identified experiences no longer possible outside of school and sought to run them as part of their school day instead. This approach saw the youngest girls take part in ‘Heritage Days’, which promoted family life and aided social interaction, as well as enjoying virtual birthday parties. The Junior School used ‘MyHappyMind’ and ‘Twinkle’ programmes to introduce students to the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

Speaking on the success of the award nomination, Headmistress Nicola Smillie said: “I am thrilled that our school has been nominated for such a prestigious award. At AESG, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing is at the forefront of our minds. As the girls have returned to school this academic year, we have continued with our wellbeing initiatives.”

Senior girls took part in weekly yoga sessions and enjoyed weekly assemblies and time for reflection with the School Chaplin, which allowed everyone to pause from their learning and take time to think about their own mental health and the wellbeing of their classmates.

First Year adventures at Stockport Grammar sporty, musical, dramatic, thoughtful, competitive, curious, caring or creative, there is something to inspire them. Pupils were encouraged to find an activity that they liked and sign up for it. The adventurous pupils then headed off for the SGS annual residential trip to Ilam Youth Hostel in the beautiful Peak District, where they visited Chatsworth House, went hiking around Dovedale and took part in games and activities to develop teamwork and communication skills. First Year pupils at Stockport Grammar School (SGS) have enjoyed an actionpacked start to the academic year, making new friends, getting to know their teachers and exploring some of the extensive co-curricular opportunities on offer. Prior to the start of term, the school welcomed the First Years and their parents for an

induction session. The school was buzzing with excitement as the children got to know each other better. The Lower School Activities Fair rounded off the first week for the new First Years. SGS has an active and comprehensive co-curricular programme and the range of activities means that whether a child is

First Year pupil Alexis Atenyam said: “I really enjoyed the residential to Ilam, it was a lot of fun and I now know more people in my year and made new friends. We did lots of activities and made time for ice creams. I especially enjoyed the evening quiz and the trip to the Heights of Abraham in cable cars, which was scary but amazing.”

Louise Higson Headmistress at Lady Barn House School my career in a boys’ state grammar school and entered the independent sector in Milan, teaching kindergarten children to late teens for three years. Your views and intentions? Education is ever-changing. Nearly 150 years ago, Lady Barn School's founder, William Herford, trailblazed co-education in preparatory schools. I believe that a forward-thinking attitude must be maintained so that each child can embark on their own journey of discover y, opportunity and success. Our curriculum and numerous extracurricular facilities must remain challenging and updated and the children’s voices must be heard, hence our four school councils. After all, having specialist subject teachers for art, music, drama, IT, science, sport, Forest School and languages, including Mandarin, singles us out from many regional prep schools.

In September, dynamic Headmistress Louise Higson brought her extensive 30 years’ professional experience to Cheadle’s 500 pupil-strong Lady Barn House School, the North’s largest preparatory school, founded in Fallowf ield in 1873. Maths graduate Louise has taught children from nursery tots to upper sixth formers, mainly down south and abroad. But now, after 16 years at an all-through independent boarding school in Sussex, including 9 years as its headmistress, she is focused on primary education. Starting a new journey at Lady Barn, Louise Higson is in her element. You were appointed during the pandemic? I was interviewed over Zoom – and by the children too! Their evident happiness and enthusiasm helped me sense the Lady Barn House community spirit, the school’s

family environment and its ethos. Like my own, it upholds the needs of the individual child, aims for academic results via a wellrounded education and understands the value of extracurricular activities. Getting to know and understand each pupil and parent is vital for our three-way partnership to work. I’m no desk-bound head and my door remains open. What attracted you to teaching? Instilling the love and passion for learning has been my lifelong and only ambition. Teaching is different every day and such a privilege. Being a head is the best job in the world! Why private education? It was never a deliberate choice but more about finding the right school for me. I started

Your aims? In September, my initial goal for the children was for calm, cohesion and normality. We opened our new on-site Forest School to bring the benef its of outdoor learning into focus and introduce a tool that was beneficial for mental health and wellbeing after lockdown. We resumed day trips, welcomed visiting speakers and even managed a residential stay – all of which helped pull our school community together. Another hurdle out of the way was last week’s long-overdue compliance and educational quality inspection... on 24 hours’ notice! Now, we can get on with all the exciting things we plan to do this year. Looking ahead to next year and responding to demand, we plan to extend our nursery provision and intake so more children can take advantage of our bespoke early years environment.

After eight weeks here, I’m loving Lady Barn life and both my black Labrador, Darwin, and I have been very much welcomed into the school community.

King's clocks up netball successes After a series of dominant displays in the preliminary rounds, The King's School under-16 team drew on their collective team spirit to bag the extra-time winner against The Grange. Tied 13-13 after normal time in a gripping end-to-end encounter in which no quarter was given or taken, King's looked on their last legs when brave Aimee fell foul of a puncture wound to her knee. However, as she was being treated on the sidelines, Madi took dead aim to score the winning goal. The King's team had been the powerhouse of the tournament, beating Upton 10-4, Wilmslow High 12-3, Fallibroome 13-7, King's Chester 21-2 and Alderley Edge School for Girls 13-7 in the semifinal.

King's netballers brought home the Cheshire County Cup after a thrilling final, which was won with a golden goal from hotshot Madi Baxter, who drew strength from a late injury to her teammate Aimee Venables to bag the win.

With England Netball Roses Academy U17 National Academy star Lydia Hine leading from the front in defence, Loughborough Lightning's Madi Baxter on form in attack and Cheshire County players’ Minty Kight and Aimee Venables to the fore, King's U16 is a formidable unit.

Manchester High School for Girls’ commitment to sustainability encouraging teachers to turn off lights and screens at the end of each lesson. Senior pupils regularly use their wellbeing sessions to investigate environmental issues and last month, students in Year 8 come off-timetable for an Eco Day, during which they debated climate change and planted shrubs to create cleaner air. It is not just older pupils who are passionate about the planet. Last year, children in the Prep Department launched their own Eco Code, encouraging the community to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. It has also seen them come together with older students to participate in initiatives such as Less Waste Fortnight and World Paper-Free Day.

With COP26 underway, the environmental problems facing the planet are under scrutiny and at Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG), students are equally as passionate about finding ways to combat climate change as the world leaders who have come together in Glasgow.

Inspired by pioneering women from the school’s history, students recognise that it is ‘deeds not words’ that will make a difference. The Student Council and the school’s Eco Group have therefore come up with a variety of strategies to become more environmentally friendly – from weekly litter picking in local Platt Fields to

Head Mistress, Helen Jeys, said: “These small steps are all part of a bigger strategy that promises to move MHSG towards becoming a carbon-neutral school. As part of our commitment to sustainability, the school has been working to reduce its environmental impact for many years by sending its waste to be segregated and processed at a bespoke facility. We are continually looking at ways to become greener and value the partnership we have with our students that will enable us to make this happen.”

AESG standing out from the rest Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) has attained superb educational and pastoral goals, with over 90% of AESG’s 2021 school-leavers being accepted by their higher education of choice, a national recognition for outstanding pastoral care and an Independent School Association Award shortlisting. Nicola Smillie, Headmistress of AESG, has explained what makes the school stand out from the rest “As an all-girls school, students are allowed to be themselves while gaining confidence. They deliver better academic outcomes, enjoy an equality of opportunities and access to all leadership positions, avoid gender stereotyping and are more likely to choose STEM subjects. Alongside the academic success, we focus on the girls’ positive relationship building and their values. “The aims and ethos of AESG and its balance of academic learning with nurture resonate with my own beliefs. Based

on Christian foundations, this school encourages its two to 18-year-old girls of all faiths to examine their own spirituality and respect the creeds of others. “During Covid, one can only plan for change once students and staff are ‘in situ’ at school. AESG adapted well to the pandemic. With minimum disruption planned, and full Covid assessment measures in place, live teaching never stopping during lockdown and remote learning was operational when required. My objective was to keep things going. We concentrated

Tentree eco-tech clothing We love technical clothing. With modern materials science, you feel like you can go anywhere and do anything in any conditions. Outdoor brand tentree offers an added benefit for active people who love the planet – for every one of their eco-clothing products purchased, they’ll plant ten trees, hence the name. Not only that, but it uses ethical manufacturing and sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, TENCEL™ wood pulp fibre and recycled polyester, which is made from discarded plastic bottles saved from landfill. One of our favourites from the new outerwear collection is this fabulous Cloud Shell Long Puffer – bang on trend for the hippest school-run mums and outdoor athletes alike. The creation of this season’s collection recycled 706,420 plastic bottles and saved 3,002,125 litres of water as well as planting 175,820 trees, so here’s to many more seasons. £250, tentree.co.uk

Klipsch x McLaren T5 II earbuds There are few more extreme environments for your ears than Formula One. So, when audiophile pioneer Klipsch partnered with the McLaren F1 team to develop race-ready audio systems, they wanted to create a cocooning soundscape that could give noise isolation and clarity even to a trackside F1 driver. I actually got my hands on a pair and trust me, they did it. The scientists have truly cracked active noise cancellation, which you can instantly sense is better than the competition, and audio and build quality that’s worthy of both these top-end brands. Every conceivable feature is here, including ultra-fast wireless charging and movement sensors for hands-free control, plus, of course, the McLaren signature papaya colour and real carbon fibre accents. Klipsch is a thoroughbred audio company, and it shows. The digital performance enhancement – Dirac HD sound – improves staging, clarity, vocal crispness and bass fidelity. Needless to say, even if you’re not in an F1 pit lane or standing behind a jet engine, you’ll still appreciate the big sound from these amazing tiny devices. £379, klipsch.com

Mercedes-Benz of Stockport celebrates success LSH Auto’s flagship Mercedes-Benz showroom in Stockport is going from strength to strength The state-of-the-art, purpose-built, three-story facility opened its doors in August 2019 and has now become the most popular Mercedes-Benz destination in the North West, attracting an unprecedented number of new customers.

Stefan Bowett, Dealer Principal, said: “Mercedes-Benz of Stockport has had a fantastic two and a half years. We’re grateful for the continued support that we receive from our customers and I’m proud of our team, particularly how hard they have worked over the past 18 months to overcome the challenges of the global pandemic.”

78 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

Stefan became the new Dealer Principal at Mercedes-Benz of Stockport in November 2020, having previously led LSH Auto’s Whitefield operation. The move marked a return to the area for Stefan as he spent five years working at the original Mercedes-Benz of Stockport site from 2013 to 2018.

“I think our ongoing commitment to putting our customers first and giving them the best possible service has stood us in good stead. ‘You come first. Always’ is our mantra at LSH Auto and that aligns perfectly with my personal high standards and the expectations I have of my team.”

“I was really pleased to return to Stockport, where I initially built my career. It’s been fantastic to hear from so many of my old customers and to make sure they continue to receive excellent service from my team here. Mercedes-Benz of Stockport is now our flagship site, attracting more customers than we could have imagined and my team pride themselves on maintaining the highest levels of personal service for each individual.”

Spread over 10.5 acres, Mercedes-Benz of Stockport has two buildings. Its 13,492sqm showroom is a retail space for new and used cars and is also home to an aftersales facility with 30 workshops and two MOT testing bays. The 17,166sqm purpose-built, high-tech body, paint and repair centre operates as LSH Auto UK’s regional used car preparation facility and parts distribution centre.

In its second year of trading, MercedesBenz of Stockport grew new car sales by more than 47% and used car sales by 72%, despite the UK lockdowns.

“In our second year of trading, our aftersales team has also grown and our high-tech body, paint and repair centre has continued to support customers in getting their vehicles back on the road and looking as good as new.” A destination in its own right, MercedesBenz of Stockport offers customers a unique experience. Its contemporary water feature makes the perfect impression on arrival. Customers can sit back and enjoy a refreshing drink with a speciality cake or pastry from the on-site bistro, and there’s even a golf simulator for those who fancy perfecting their swing while their car is being serviced.

The modern space can be hired for private events and meetings, offering multiple meetings rooms, an ample outdoor roof terrace and a private cinema room. “One of our customers recently hired the venue for a wine-tasting event, which was a huge success. We’ve had enquiries from local artists and high-end businesses about hiring space for exhibitions and special events for their customers, and we’re looking forward to resuming our own regular calendar of VIP customer events in 2022.” LSH Auto was one of the first automotive retailers in the UK to recognise that some

customers prefer to browse and shop from home and in 2019, launched a full digital platform. The service enables customers to browse online, book a solo test drive from their home, buy online and choose either click and collect or home delivery. Since its launch, the service has been incredibly popular and the LSH Auto customer experience team have helped thousands of customers over the phone or via online chat and email. “Even though our online sales have skyrocketed, many customers choose to come to the showroom for the full handover experience. “Mercedes-Benz of Stockport has set a new standard in the UK luxury vehicle retail industry by responding to our customers’ desires and needs. We are constantly looking for new ways to improve our service and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow the business into 2022 and beyond.”

MOTORING

ICONIC IONIQ

The rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has been exciting for so many reasons, not least for the sake of ensuring a future world for our children to inhabit. But as well as the environmental necessity of the change from internal combustion to cleaner alternatives, there have also been massive social and economic changes from this giant industry, which has rapidly risen to take over the car world. But this isn’t an article for The Economist. I write this page about motoring because I have a very simplistic love for the shapes and aesthetics of cars. Like many car enthusiasts, I have always seen cars through the eyes of a child – fascinated by the feelings and experiences they evoke. From that perspective then, EVs are exciting because they have ushered in an entire new design language. The craft and skill of car designers is an awe-inspiring thing. To those of us not in the profession, we might instinctively know a lot about a car just by looking at it, but we might lack the language to explain how. The best example of this is the fact that you can spot most EVs a mile off, just by their futuristic shapes and visual cues. Think about it: Mercedes’ EQ range just looks different to normal Mercedes. They have their own distinctive shapes. Same with BMW’s i Series.

And you don’t need to count the exhaust pipes (or lack of) on a Porsche to tell the electric Taycan from the rest of the range. When I first saw the electric Hyundai IONIQ 5, my jaw dropped. Historically, Hyundai and other Korean brands have been marketed to us Europeans as an affordable, reliable and economical alternative to more expensive Western brands and their visual styling told that story. They looked accessible, unthreatening and the opposite of exclusive. Nothing wrong with that, but it seldom excited the car snob. This, however, throws all that out the window. It screams ‘premium’ from every angle, with bold shapes straight out of science fiction, such as the aggressive slashes down the flanks and the uncompromising square headlamps under the furrowed brow of the bonnet line. As Hyundai has proudly stated, this marks a totally fresh design direction for the brand, and I think it works. The confident visual statement is backed up in every way; the car is winning awards left, right and centre for everything from handling to interior space. Even more intriguingly, we’re told the IONIQ 5 is just the beginning. 6 and 7 are in the pipeline and promise to shake things up even more.

Fact file / Hyundai IONIQ 5 / 0-60: 5.2 seconds / Top speed: 115mph / Charging: 10%-80% in 18 minutes / Range: 298 miles per charge / Price: from £36,995 / Launch date: available now
