The joys of spring are upon us. I love this time of year – especially the longer days and, if we’re lucky, higher temperatures. If you’re not sure where you want to go this summer, and you are looking for a short break in the capital or fancy dining on the river, read our review on London’s newest floating restaurant, Glass Room. And if you need to stay over in a London hotel, The Westbury Mayfair (page 24) will tick all your boxes. Its prime location on Bond Street, with fashion, art and the city’s landmarks on its doorstep, ensures you can do all the sightseeing you want and shop till you drop!

Of course, there’s much more to read in this issue, from fashion, beauty and Dexter’s Charity Ball to my varicose vein tried & tested and food and drink news and reviews. I hope you’ll agree that it’s worthwhile taking some time out to relax with a cuppa or a glass of what you fancy and read your popular, local lifestyle magazine. Last year, I danced the quickstep at the Brainwave Strictly Summer Ball and this year, I am hosting it. Read all about this year’s dancers in our next issue.

We’ve had some fabulous feedback about our revamped magazines and we have taken all comments on board. It’s a work in progress, so thank you for taking time out to contact us. See you in June.

Brainwave Strictly Summer announces 2019 line-up for children’s charity Brainwave Strictly Summer launches a new line-up of dancers, who will be put through their paces to compete for the all-important winner’s trophy. The children’s charity Brainwave is announcing plans for its 2019 Strictly Summer event, which will see 10 volunteers from the corporate world partner up with professional dancers from Cadman’s Dance School for the ultimate summer dance contest. The star-studded night is set to be hosted by Beverley Uddin Khandakar, last year’s semi-finalist and, amongst others, will see local Lymm Florist, Carl Walsh and Katie McCann from Irwin Michell be put through their paces in a bid to impress the judges. The extravagant ballroom event will take place at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa in

Knutsford on Saturday 29th June, where contestants will strut and jive in sequins in a battle to win the Brainwave trophy. The aim of this glittery event is to raise vital funds to support children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve life changing goals. Brainwave Regional Fundraising Manager, Joanne Freeman, said: “This will be the second Brainwave Strictly Summer event and the contestants have already embraced dancing the cha-cha challenge with their first training class. “It’s exciting to see our staff being partnered up with the professional dancers and training in full swing as the battle begins. “I am overwhelmed with the huge amount of support we have received over the past year. The judges, Mike Marshall and

Brainwave Patron Lady Emma Fellowes, will be ready to judge the dancers on the night. I am also calling on local people to come along and enjoy this fantastic evening of stars, sequins and sparkle. “I would like to wish all contestants the best of luck as they salsa and waltz it out to support Brainwave and help children with disabilities and additional needs to reach their potential.” The event is supported by The Mere Golf Resort and Spa, Hale and Didsbury Magazine, Salutions Publishing and Event Station. For more information about Brainwave or to find out more about Strictly Summer, visit our website brainwave.org.uk or contact Joanne Freeman on 07872 411 580 or by email: JoanneFreeman@brainwave.org.uk. Gino D’Acampo visits young patients at Starlight Ward

TV chef Gino D’Acampo was moved and inspired when he met young patients in the Starlight Ward. The star has been an avid supporter of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity since meeting patients caught up in the Manchester Arena attack in 2017. He chose to make them his nominated charity when My Pizza & Prosecco Bar in Manchester’s Arndale launched in November that year. After a previous trip to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) last year, he went to meet young patients and staff at Starlight Ward, a satellite ward of RMCH based on the Wythenshaw Hospital site. He chatted to children and found out about some of the incredible work that has been carried out at Starlight thanks to the genersity of supporters like himself. Gino said: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is an incredible organisation; what the charity does to make a positive difference to young children and their families’ lives is truly humbling. 10

April/May 2019 | salutions.co.uk

“It was both a privilege and an honour to meet with the patients and staff at the Starlight Ward today and to learn a little more about their great work. I’m delighted to support the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity as the nominated charity of My Pizza & Prosecco Bar.” Among those who Gino chatted to was 11-year-old Ollie and mum Michaela Hatcheet from Wythenshawe. Michaela said: “They got chatting about pizza, and Ollie told Gino his favourite topping was chicken. He liked meeting him and having his picture taken with him.” The chef also met Faith, who spoke to Gino about the popular TV show Friends, which her parents had brought into the ward for her to watch. Mum Michelle James said: “It was very kind of him to come and see the patients. It brought a big smile to her face.” Gino has previously donated £10,000 to the charity following the creation of his special Humphrey Granny Smith Martini

cocktail and mocktail, from which £1 of every sale went to the charity. The fatherof-three also donated £1 from the sale of every margherita pizza. During the visit to Starlight, he brought along a further £3,000, taking his total amount donated to £13,000. Gino has now launched a new range of smoothies, including Phillip’s Feel-good Factor and Bunton’s Beetroot Boogie. Celebrity friends, including Phillip Scofield, Emma Bunton and Keith Lemon came up with the recipes and each drink is named after their famous creator. The generous chef will be donating 50p of each smoothie sale to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity. The support of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity means the hospital can provide additional resources that make life easier for the patients and their families who use the hospital.

Radio broadcaster Phil Trow is buzzing to be part of this year’s Manchester Midnight Walk become a staple on the city’s fundraising calendar, with last year’s event raising £163,795.09 for St Ann’s, bringing the total raised since its launch to more than £2 million. Phil added: “Every year at the walk, I am reminded how amazing the people in our great city are. Standing on the stage at Manchester Cathedral watching everyone set off at midnight is always very exciting, but is also quite emotional when you think that many are raising money for someone special. Hospices make such a difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones, and being part of an event which helps them to raise money to fund their vital work is amazing.” The BBC Radio Manchester presenter will be hosting the main stage at this year’s Manchester bee-themed fundraising event in aid of St Ann’s Hospice, and is hoping as many local people as possible will join him. He explained: “Every year more than 1,000 people gather at Manchester Cathedral to take part in the Midnight Walk to raise money for St Ann’s. It’s always such an amazing event and I’m really looking forward to hosting the stage for the pre-walk entertainment again this year.

“Participants very often wear fancy dress on the night and this year, the hospice is encouraging people to embrace the Manchester bee theme – the Midnight Walk’s colours are yellow and black, so it fits in perfectly! Don’t worry if you don’t like fancy dress though, please do sign up and come along and say hello anyway. The more the merrier, and it’s all in aid of a fantastic local cause.”

The walk leaves Manchester Central at midnight, with music and entertainment on the event stage starting at 9pm. The 10km route covers landmarks such as Manchester Cathedral, St Ann’s Square and Spinningfields. Organisers are urging anyone interested in taking part to register as soon as possible. Many fundraisers walk in memory of loved ones, with others happy to join the fun at this family event.

Manchester’s free Italian festival is back in July

Festa Italiana Manchester, the country’s biggest and best festival celebrating Italian food, drink and culture, has announced the dates for its third annual event. Manchester city centre’s Cathedral Gardens will be transformed into Little Italy once again from the 26th – 28th July. In two short years, Festa Italiana has established itself as one of Manchester’s most popular events, with nearly 30,000 visitors flocking to the city centre ‘Italian oasis’ created on Cathedral Gardens in 2018. In 2019, the event will be expanding to take in a bigger area around the city’s ‘Medieval Quarter’ and with even more Italian producers, chefs, food, drink and music scheduled to descend on Manchester for the weekend. Open from 11am-11pm, the daily programme will include: live cookery demonstrations; an artisan Italian food market; a much bigger and more extensive kids’ fest for children of all ages; Italian banquets; and bespoke bars serving everything from Negroni to Meloncello.

From morning through to sundown, there’ll be live music from Italian bands and musicians flown over especially from Italy alongside some of Manchester’s best DJs keeping the party going into the night. A key theme for this year will be the importance of cooking at home together as a family and its impact on health and wellbeing – something that is a huge part of Italian culture. This will be celebrated and showcased throughout the Festa with family style events and special guests – details to be announced. The Festa has also pledged to bring together Manchester’s Italian food community on the biggest scale yet. The ambition is to collaborate with even more of the city’s best Italian restaurants and food heroes, as well as more Italian brands from across the UK and Italy than ever before.

The event was founded by the Salvi’s Restaurant Group. Maurizio Cecco, owner of Salvi’s and a Naples native, has successfully brought his vision to life over the past two years in creating a truly authentic celebration inspired by the traditional festivals he attends back home over the summer in Italy. Festa Italiana is a chance to experience that slice of the Italian life here in Manchester – so, as ever, customers should expect lashings of pizza, pasta, Prosecco, cured meats, cheese, family fun, gelato and all the other fabulous things that the Italians have bestowed upon us. Any restaurants or brands who would like to be involved in this year’s festival are encouraged to email info@festaitalianauk.com For full information and updates visit festaitalianauk.com. “When the time came for the other hip, I wanted to try the new Mako procedure at Spire. “What a difference! Within a fortnight, I needed only minor pain relief rather than strong painkillers. Within three weeks, I could use public transport and do gentle

exercises in the pool, and by four weeks, I was swimming!” Professor Max Fehily says: “Oshor benefitted from the most precise hip replacement surgeons have ever been able to offer. For the first time, we’re operating on hips using a robotic arm to guide what we do in theatre. This reduces the common complications of surgery and causes less trauma to healthy tissue, ensuring the best outcome for patients and getting them back to their activities as soon as possible and for longer.”

The Endeavour Project Fostering Service FOR PETS murdered by their partner or ex-partner and 30 men were murdered last year as a result of domestic violence. 25% of domestic abuse survivors returned to an abusive partner out of concern for their pet.

The Endeavour project, which was set up in 1998, is a unique service that covers the North West and supports anyone who has a pet in need of temporary accommodation until it is safe for them to return home. Last year, 1.9 million women aged 16-59 reported suffering domestic abuse since the age of 16. Two women a week are

Here at Endeavour, we offer a unique fostering service for pets ensuring that no one gets left behind. We receive no funding for this service and rely on the support of amazing people like you to keep these animals safe until they can return home. Working with people and their pets, we see the connection between animal abuse and domestic abuse. When animals are abused, people are at risk; when people are abused, animals are at risk. In a fifth of homes where pets suffer cruelty, there is a high risk of domestic abuse. In violent and abusive relationships, pets are often threatened, injured or even killed by the perpetrator to maintain control over their partner and children or to

intimidate them to remain in, or be silent about, their abusive situation.

One of our surveys revealed that 94% of women living in refuges said that the availability of a pet fostering service would have made it easier for them and their children to escape the violence. Over 50% had no option to permanently give up their pets before going in to temporary accommodation. Endeavour project reduces the stress and pressure on these families and the suffering of the animals by providing high-quality pet fostering until the owners are rehoused. The pet service comprises a network of experienced volunteer pet foster carers who are supported and advised on specialist animal care as required. All fostered animals are visited and monitored on a regular basis to ensure they are receiving the highest standard of care.

Olivia May Creative fashion with the customer at the heart We sit down with Olivia May owner Ann Whorrall to talk all things fashion, business and designers with a difference.

gorgeous tie-dye styles coming in for summer,” Ann tells us, “it’s set to be one of the biggest trends of the year.”

As we catch up with Ann, who’s just returned from a buying trip to Paris, she tells us how Olivia May came to be: “I set up Olivia May about five years’ ago, after working as an education inspector,” laughs Ann. “I know that seems a drastic change in career path, but fashion has always been a passion of mine, so for me, it was a natural step.”

Some of Olivia May’s designers include: Malloni, Rundholz, Ewa I Walla, Privatsachen, Mama B, and Gershon Bram.

Olivia May started online, stocking just six designers (there are now over 50 from across the world!) before opening a Cheshire showroom and a shop in Oxford.

“Whether your style is romantic or straight cut and crisp, we stock designers to suit all preferences,” explains Ann. “One of our main advantages is that we stock a wide range of different designers all in one place, which allows us to offer something for everyone. I’m really proud of that.”

“I’ve lived both in Cheshire and near Oxford, so I know these areas well and knew they were the right places for me to put Olivia May in bricks and mortar.” And the name? There’s a lovely sentiment behind it. “My youngest daughter is called Olivia,” smiles Ann, “and she was born in May.” But who is the Olivia May woman? Typically, she’s 35+, independent, artistic, professional, creative, someone who loves her own style or is looking to make a change and wants to invest in quality clothing. “We’re all about sustainability, not fast fashion,” says Ann. “We stock items that are designed to be worn both now and in years to come. At Olivia May, we help clients to choose investment pieces that they not only love, but are versatile and can be worn time and time again.” At the Cheshire showroom, based in the relaxed area of Ashton Hayes near Chester, Olivia May welcome customers to come for a personal styling experience with one of their stylists, who will spend time helping customers create their perfect wardrobe. The secluded showroom allows clients to have the time to focus on themselves, to find out what really suits them without the pressure of regular shopping. “Our styling service is free of charge,” says Ann. “All we ask is that customers give us a call to arrange a time. We encourage people to look online first and let us know which pieces they like, so we can ensure we have them ready at the showroom. We’re here to guide our customers and give them the most enjoyable experience possible.” Despite stocking many international unique and avant-garde designers, Olivia May is also very trend focussed: “We have some

Peace of mind for you and your family at all times

The Private GP & Night Doctor Service We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Whilst the NHS is a good system, demand has increased so much that it has become almost impossible for it to offer the prompt and personal care that we all wish for. We believe our registered patients want a professional service with peace of mind at all times – from immediate telephone advice to organising an admission into hospital, anytime, day or night – all provided by a small group of doctors whom they know.

Hopefully, you will not need to see a doctor urgently, but accidents or illnesses can occur when least expected, and having to travel or wait several hours for healthcare can only make the ordeal worse. You can stay registered with your NHS GP, as our aim is not to replace your care but to work alongside it, providing you with our extra medical care when you or your family need it most. Dexter’s Ball Meet the brave boy behind the big event On 14th June, Dexter’s Ball will take place at The Mere in Cheshire – a night of fundraising hosted by ITV Granada’s Lucy Meacock and packed full of amazing entertainment and prizes. But this is no ordinary ball, this is one with a very special story – and a very special little boy – behind it.

By Lisa Symonds

DEXTER’S STORY Last December, seven-year-old Dexter Kidd ‘rang the end of treatment bell’ at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, having completed over three years of treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He flashed the same smile everyone had got to know so well throughout his journey, no matter how tough things got. Sitting down with his mum Katie, she quietly recalls the day her youngest son was diagnosed: “It was July 2015. A week after his fourth birthday and also the weekend of my husband Jonny’s 40th. We’d been to London and I was thinking how brilliant life was and how we had everything.” Dexter hadn’t been himself; he lacked energy and looked pale. What his parents hoped was just a virus or anaemia led them to Ward 84.

The money raised by the ball will be divided between the charity and two others: Joshua Tree, which supports families impacted by childhood cancer and is currently raising funds to open a new centre in Northwich, and Bloodwise, a blood cancer research charity, whose team includes the consultant who cared for Dexter.

Life on Ward 84 “Finding out was the worst feeling in the world,” says Katie, “and suddenly you’re in a world you’ve never experienced before – the children’s cancer ward.”

Giving something back “We feel really lucky because we’ve got a really supportive family and friends, but a lot of the people don’t,” explains Katie. “Seeing some of the awful cases, we realised how bad it could have been and we feel so grateful to so many people – the ball is our way of giving something back.” The glamorous evening will feature music from Afrika Fuentes and Groovy Revolution, a DJ, magic show, a heap of opportunities to win prizes and VIP guests of honour – Dexter and big brother Joey (albeit briefly before bedtime!).

It was life on the ward and another young patient they met there, Milly Walmsley, that inspired Katie and her family to start fundraising. Milly died aged 11, and her mum Lorraine set up Milly’s Smiles, a charity that creates wonderfully practical care packages for families who suddenly find themselves at hospital without life’s essentials.

Life is back on track Katie tells us that Dexter is back at school, still smiling (“he’s such a joker”), and he and his brother are back fighting again. “Things are definitely back to normal,” she laughs. “It’s been hard for Joey. Dexter didn’t have a clue what was going on but, with Joey, we got the really difficult questions like ‘will he die?’ He’d wake up some days and it was his dad holding the fort because I’d had to rush Dexter to the hospital in the middle of the night.” This strong woman, so immensely proud of her children, pauses for a moment… “We’d rather not have gone through this and it changes you, but a lot of positives come out of it. We just don’t take anything for granted now.”

You shall go to the ball… For tickets, email Team Kidd on dexterscharityball@gmail.com For ball updates on social: @DextersBall2019 April/May 2019 | salutions.co.uk

A personalised approach to fertility Using embryo analysis software, these snapshots of development are compared to data collected from 1000s of other embryos across the globe. This helps us ensure that only the best embryos are transferred or preserved (frozen) for patients.” Reproductive Health Group (RHG) is a UK-leading leading fertility clinic. Positioned at the cutting edge of patientfocussed services and treatments, it consistently strives to be one of the best of its kind in the world. Leading with unparalleled passion, skill and commitment is Professor Luciano Nardo, who we caught up with to find out more about the Warrington-based clinic’s exciting new developments and why patients from far and wide, previously told having children was impossible, turn to him and his team. Ground-breaking technology RHG is the only comprehensive fertility clinic in the country and as such, offers everything from surgical procedures and IVF to laboratory testing and gynaecology – all under one roof. The clinic is constantly evolving and improving the services offered to patients. “We are delighted to announce that the clinic has recently introduced EmbryoScope™,” says Professor Nardo, “a truly ground-breaking time-lapse system, which takes a photo of embryos every 10 minutes across a five-day period.

A dedicated, ever-expanding team Providing a second-to-none service is at the heart of RHG’s work, as is forgoing the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach and replacing it with a tailormade approach that covers all aspects of the fertility journey. “Not only have we expanded the embryology and clinical team,” reveals Professor Nardo, “but recently launched a Fertility Partners Team too. This is a bank of carefully selected consultants that offers complimentary services to patients – in addition to clinical ones – such as acupuncture, reflexology, counselling and even fertility law support.” Emotional support The clinic now offers fertility coaching too, a service which acknowledges and addresses the impact fertility issues can have on people’s lives emotionally: “Very few clinics offer this service as part of the journey,” explains Professor Nardo. “This is about helping people deal with their fertility issues on a day-to-day basis and to understand that fertility is not a disease – enabling them to regain the emotional control that may have been lost when they found out that they had fertility issues.”

Professor Nardo goes on to explain how the clinic is also working to recognise the cultural differences within specific communities and/or ethnic backgrounds and even has special care co-ordinators with knowledge and experience of a specific community to deliver care and support to patients within them. Life-changing, life-creating results Every day, around 20 new glowing testimonials are posted to the RHG website, such is the impact it’s having in changing lives and creating new ones: “Each patient is studied carefully, underlying problems are investigated and treatment options – not just the one – are given,” says Professor Nardo. “We give a proper level of support before, during and after treatment. We are very proud to achieve very high success rates – we see patients who have been told they can never have a child have a child. “We have the services to do this – to help them achieve their dream in life.” And, as reproductive medicine moves ever faster to focus on prevention (people wanting to preserve fertility by freezing eggs or sperm) and the development of genetically tested embryos to create healthy children who are free from hereditary disorders, pioneering RHG will undoubtedly be found leading from the front, right here in the North West.

The Manchester Vein Clinic Varicose vein removal

Following years of hating baring my legs to the world, I decided to take the plunge and visit The Manchester Vein Clinic. If I’d realised how straight forward and efficient it was going to be, I would have done it years ago. After an initial consultation, where I gave my family history and had an ultrasound (to decide which treatment was best for me), I left with a date to return for treatment.

By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar

The procedure was quite theatre-like, although more inviting than a hospital theatre. The surgeon and his assistants scrubbed in and, in my gown, I lay face down with everything covered apart from my left leg, which they were working on. The procedure was relatively pain free. The initial local anaesthetic stung a little, however, I have a very low pain threshold, so most people probably wouldn’t feel a thing – however, I did feel a bit of tugging. I left with paper stitches, a bandage on the whole of my leg, which I had to wear for 24 hours and once removed, I could shower as usual and wear a compression stocking. This was worn for two weeks – one week continually, apart from showering, and the next week during the

daytime only. The stocking is to avoid deep vein thrombosis (DVT). What are varicose veins? Varicose veins are veins that lie just below the surface of the skin, which have become enlarged and tortuous (full of twists and turns). All veins have valves within them which are responsible for preventing blood from pooling in the leg. If valves fail to work, pressure increases in the veins and causes them to swell and bulge. They are usually most noticeable in the calf and ankle. Standing for prolonged periods may cause the calf to ache or ankle to swell. How are varicose veins diagnosed? A duplex ultrasound assessment is the best way to diagnose varicose veins. During the assessment, a water-based gel is spread on to the skin of your leg from groin to ankle and an ultrasound probe is runover the skin to give a picture of the veins and the direction of blood flow. The scan provides a ‘map’ of the varicose veins in your leg to determine which treatment will be the best option for you. As the main veins in your leg (the deep veins) are also checked during the scan, any underlying problems affecting your treatment will also be identified.

What is an avulsion procedure and how does it work? Also known as phlebectomies, it is a technique used to remove varicose veins via local anaesthetic. Very tiny cuts are made at the surface of the skin under local anaesthetic and the vein is removed. The cuts are so small, stitches are not needed, and small paper stitches are used instead. How long does the avulsions treatment take? It can take approximately 30 minutes per leg, dependent on the extent of the varicose veins. You are able to go home on the same day. What are the benefits of avulsions treatment? • Local anaesthetic • Minimal scarring – usually only 2mm scar • Instant cosmetic look – the veins that can be seen on the surface of the skin will be removed • Short recovery time – you can usually resume normal activities within an hour From start to finish, the whole procedure took around one hour. Two weeks on and my scars are almost healed, and I am going back in six weeks for thread vein removal.

Fancy a float? When we first saw the Zero Gravity Float Spa on Instagram, we were intrigued. When we found out it was locally based in Altrincham, we were even keener to give it a go.

Floating is essentially what it says on the tin. You spend an hour lying quietly suspended in a warm solution of Epsom salt in a (we must admit) rather other worldly looking floatation pod. Upon arrival, you’re talked through the process – good for people who have

concerns/queries, this isn’t your regular relaxation activity after all. You’re then shown to your own private room, complete with shower, silicone ear plugs, Vaseline to protect any cuts from the salt and, of course, the illuminated pod.

purely to help with jet lag or insomnia. Saying that, you don’t have to be in darkness, floating in the soft lights was equally as relaxing. And don’t be concerned about feeling claustrophobic, the pods are the same size as an average king-size bed.

I tend to get bored quickly, so was worried about the hour-long stint in darkness with my own company, but, as the staff informed me, the aim isn’t necessarily to switch off but to slow down and take a breather from everyday life, which I certainly did. In fact, I almost fell asleep, which I hear is common as there’s no possibility of drowning due to the high buoyancy of water. Some people even fall asleep on purpose; one hour of float sleep is equivalent to two to three hours of deep sleep, so, many people float

The benefits? Lowering stress, muscle relaxation, improving circulation, improving sleep quality, managing depression, and joint and exercise pain reduction. Salt water is even great for skin - the list is endless! Float for your mind, body, and wellbeing.

STYLE Want to know the secret to a happy marriage? Simples. Gin. Gallons of gin By Catherine Saunders. Read more at www.ladymuck.style Right now, gin may be the only thing stopping me from throttling my husband. You see, two months ago, his Lordship was invited to a school reunion and I agreed to be his chauffeur for the night, a decision I now regret. First up, I met his old rugby mates, good fun. Next, his athletics team guys, also cool. Then came a very motley crew indeed: John, Pete, Simon and Stan, apparently members of Lord Muck’s old teenage boy band, Diablo Saints. Stone cold sober, I watched on in horror as they re-bonded over fervent Free Bird air guitaring and drunken In the Air Tonight drumming marathons. Ok, I thought, no probs, that’s what reunions are for and now farewell to said motley crew for another 20 years. What I hadn’t bargained for was the ensuing reunion of Diablo Saints. The middle-aged version. Our garage is now the band’s base, complete with amps, newly acquired drum kit, actual guitars and a booming sound system. Every Friday night, myself and the rest of the neighbourhood are treated to repeated renditions of Come as You Are, and, let me tell you, Nirvana

these guys ain’t. So, to keep the neighbours happy, I have converted our summerhouse area into a community botanical gin garden and it has thankfully gone down a storm. Now, if your good nature is being tested for any reason, why not get your own gin garden going? Many of the botanicals used to infuse gin can be grown in your garden or in pots, plus you get to do a hell of a lot of tasting sessions. Result. Traditionally, gin is subtly flavoured with fruit (such as lemon or oranges) and herbs (such as juniper, coriander and cardamom), but there are plenty of other ingredients you can grow at home that will flavour a bottle of gin fabulously. Lavender, rosemary and basil grow well in pots whilst blackberries, raspberries and apples are great if you have more space. Now is the perfect time to pick up some young plants from your local garden centre, grow them on in good compost this summer, making sure not to overwater any herbs, and you’ll soon be creating your very own bespoke botanical gin. Here are a couple of my favourite recipes, which are going down very well with our stressed-out neighbours: Lavender &

Blackcurrant Lush Gin and Raspberry Ripple Gin. Of course, adorning glasses with ear plugs is optional. For Lush Gin, you’ll need: a sterilised 500ml Le Parfait jar, 450ml gin and three sprigs of French lavender (washed). Pour gin into jar and add the lavender. Seal and leave at room temperature for two to four days, depending on how strong you’d like the lavender flavour. Strain bottle contents, discard lavender, reseal, label and store somewhere cool and dark. For Raspberry Ripple, you’ll need: a sterilised 2-litre Le Parfait jar, 300g raspberries, 330g sugar and 1.5 litres of gin. Place washed raspberries in jar, add sugar and top up with gin. Shake every day until sugar is dissolved and then store in cool, dark place for at least three months. Right. Must dash. Lord Muck’s only gone and grown a Dave Grohl beard and added Tuesday nights to Diablo Saints’ sessions. Time to make more gin…

London’s restaurant on the river

By Emily Fitzgibbons

Under the stars and on the water, we experienced London’s newest floating restaurant – Glass Room

Brought to the UK by Bateaux, who already boast successful dining experiences in Dubai and New York, the all glass boat reinvents dining on the water, offering sailors stunning sights of the capital’s landmarks. We joined the Dinner Sail, departing at 7pm from the Embankment Pier, which allowed us to enjoy illuminated views of the London Eye, Big Ben, Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament. Glass Room is a treat for all the senses. The carefully crafted menu celebrates modern British cuisine and is paired with irresistible

drinks that match your meal perfectly, all whilst listening to live music and floating past some of the country’s most iconic sights. Dining packages range from the Deluxe £59pp, Superior £79pp, Premier £109pp and the Signature £149pp. Each package includes live music and a 2.45-hour sail, but dinner and drinks options vary dependent upon price. Our Premier Package included per person: a sparkling welcome drink; 5-course set menu; half a bottle of house wine; mineral water; and barista coffee or speciality tea.

We were first served an amuse-bouche of spiced cauliflower velouté topped with curry oil and shallot crisps, the perfect start to the meal. Then came fresh and tasty Severn and Wye smoked salmon with celeriac remoulade followed by a surprisingly hearty portion of roasted English chicken breast, which was accompanied by butternut mousse and soft braised leek. And for dessert? One of our personal favourites – bateaux crème brûlée, with two pieces of buttery shortbread on the side… delicious.

There’s the enhancement option of adding in a cheeseboard course, consisting of artisan cheeses with crackers and chutney, which as cheese lovers, we would’ve gone for if we hadn’t have been so pleasantly full! As the live guitarist wound down, and the sail slowed to a close, we were brought a selection of petit fours and chocolates and a choice of barista coffee or speciality tea – an indulgent way to end a decadent evening.

Watch the banks of the Thames go by as you float beneath the stars, eating and sipping in style on Bateaux’s Glass Room Dinner Experience. Enjoy a London less ordinary. Albert’s Didsbury has reopened its doors

Albert’s restaurant in West Didsbury has opened its doors with a stunning new look. The restaurant has been closed since the beginning of January for the transformation, which has now been revealed just in time for Mother’s Day.

The interior features eye-catching colourways of dark green, gold and tan with lush materials, such as velvet, used in the seating area. The look is complemented with a wall of living plants separating the restaurant and bar area. Lighting is a key feature, including a beautifully designed centrepiece inspired by the elegance of birds singing and celebrating life.

The Albert’s team have delivered a fabulous new bar experience with a big revamped range of local craft beers, cocktails, fizz and wines. This warm, welcoming new neighbourhood bar experience (which seats 56 in total) can host pre-bookable party tables, making it an exciting addition to the Didsbury social scene. It is also home to the Didsbury Gin range, which will be on show in a gorgeous botanical-themed back bar, which serves bespoke gin and tonics. The popular outside area boasts a brand-new look, including chairs and tables for 76 people on the terrace and up to 120 people on the lower terrace. The Albert’s food menu remains the same, so customers will still be able to enjoy their firm favourites. And for the first time, Albert’s is serving a traditional afternoon tea. From an intimate get together for two or a larger group of friends, it’s the perfect place to celebrate this fabulous tradition.

Evuna Group opens in Altrincham

Evuna, the North West’s leading Spanish restaurant, tapas bar and fine wine importer has opened its fourth branch in Altrincham. The award-winning restaurant group has branches in Manchester on Deansgate and the Northern Quarter, and Knutsford, Cheshire. Its fourth branch, the former Yorkshire bank at 84-86 Stamford New Road, will be the first Evuna to house an incredible Tapas bar seating 24 diners along with an open kitchen for customers to see their amazing chefs at work. The restaurant itself has an additional formal dining area seating 45 covers and can cater for groups and corporate events. Private hire is available as are group menus and wine tastings.

Whilst a growing group of restaurants, founders Jane and Frances Dowler want each branch to remain strongly independent, encouraging creativity within each branch from their chefs. The menu at every Evuna includes their staple tapas, such as albondigas, calamares and, of course, bravas whilst adopting a monthly focus of regional specials, which showcase more elegant tapas using modern fusion techniques. Altrincham welcomes Chef Pedro Luis Diaz Avila, who began his journey into the world of culinary at the National Kitchen School in Santander, Spain. 52

MAsons REstAuRAnt BAR

PREzzo

Yu

Manchester

Media City

Alderley Edge

The new spring menu at Masons Restaurant Bar, found in the opulent Manchester Hall, formerly the Freemasons Hall, launched at the end of February, boasting a range of new British Isles-sourced choices. Whether it’s your first time to the city centre restaurant or you’re a regular customer, you can be assured of the same attentive Masons’ welcome. Our server Joe was personable and informative – he knew we were celebrating a birthday and sorted complimentary champagne and Limoncello shots, attentiveness at its finest.

Located within Manchester's buzzing MediaCity complex, Prezzo is your classic Italian, which offers diners a great view of popular Salford Quays.

Chinese restaurant Yu, found in Cheshire’s leafy Alderley Edge, is one of the country’s finest dining establishments, well-known in the area and beyond for its fantastic food and offering a high-end culinary experience, so we couldn’t wait to have dinner there.

We chose gooey melt-in-the-middle buratta, paired perfectly with a crunch of chicory and walnut salad, and a prawn cocktail – not your typical throwback dish either; large juicy prawns are accompanied by spicy avocado, bloody Mary jelly and artisanal bread – yum! Known for their excellent fish and meat options, we chose the soft as butter Dukesmoor fillet served pink and with truffle chips, and the seabass, complete with aioli fondant potatoes (perfect for garlic lovers) and seasonal greens. For dessert, we opted for a classic Bramley apple tart, flambéd with Calvados at the table and served with salted caramel ice cream, and rather than hot coffee, we got our caffeine fix from a plate of espresso martini, consisting of chocolate hazelnut marquise and espresso ice cream.

We visited on a quiet Sunday afternoon, which made for a relaxing bit of lunch after a busy weekend. We started with calamari, which was accompanied by a delicious pesto and mayonnaise dip, and a Caprese salad; a tower of tomato, basil pesto, balsamic glaze and gooey ball of burrata cheese, which is a nice twist on the traditional mozzarella cheese option. As with many Italian restaurants, the pizza and pasta choices are extensive. We opted for lobster and crab ravioli in a creamy red chilli and saffron sauce (just the right amount of fishy) and a bowl of pancetta, pea and mushroom penne, which is one of Prezzo’s ‘pasta light’ options – lighter pasta served with a side salad… and it was only 492 calories! To finish, we tasted the sticky toffee pudding (a go-to classic) accompanied by hot butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, and the salted caramel chocolate tart topped with golden chocolate pieces and served with cream and fresh raspberries – a picture-perfect pudding.

Yu, run by award-winning Chef Victor and his brother Vinny, who looks after the front of house, offers authentic Chinese food with a modern twist, taking traditional Chinese dining to the next level. The interior is luxurious, and we browsed the cocktail list (extensive and full of signature drinks that sit alongside regular favourites) in the elegant bar before being seated in Yu’s beautiful dining space. We chose a classic Chinese favourite, crispy duck to start, and we weren’t disappointed. Victor Yu’s crispy aromatic duck leg and pancakes is the perfect sharer to start off a meal. It came with the usual spring onion, cucumber yuzu, hoi sin sauce sides, which we hungrily tucked into. Out of the many options on the varied menu, the wagyu beef fillet with sweet soy and lime was by far our favourite. This dish, created by Victor Yu, won Gordon Ramsay’s best Chinese restaurant in Great Britain award, and we can see why. This is a must order if you’re into juicy meats and sweet flavours.

The Masons Restaurant Bar offers a playful twist on traditional club dining for diners old and new in a grand Manchester setting.

The MediaCity location makes Prezzo a good spot for a casual lunch or after-work food with colleagues.

With excellent service, stunning decor, delicious food and notable Cheshire location, we’d definitely recommend a trip to Yu.

Alderley Edge

Altrincham

We took a trip to the influencer hotspot, found in the central buzz of Alderley’s London Road, for a spot of lunch on a sunny Saturday. We sat outside on the floral front deck, perfect for people watching and soaking up the sun.

Located just outside the bustling village of Alderley Edge, The Drum & Monkey is cosy and inviting. Having reopened just a few weeks ago under new ownership and following total renovation of the interior, we were eager to see what it had to offer. It’s a shame the sun wasn’t shining, as there’s a lovely beer garden (we can only imagine how packed this will be in the summer), but the warm welcome on the inside more than made up for it. We were seated by the board games table, a great idea for enjoyment on a rainy day, and ordered drinks; fruity raspberry gins from local brand Didsbury Gin (the pub use local distilleries, produce and suppliers where possible). The menu offers a wide range of pub classics, with specials that change every few days to keep things interesting and a guest ale which changes on a weekly basis. We started with the giant Scotch egg (it really was giant too, the clues in the name…) and some sticky bourbon & sesame chicken wings. You can’t visit a pub without tasting their pie and mash, and The Drum’s 14-hr braised steak & ale pie served with greens was to die for, full to the brim with tender meat and ‘proper’ gravy. The sticky sesame chilli beef with cashew nut and crispy noodle salad was divine – a different taste and texture in every mouthful! Most of the mains can be made into smaller portions, perfect for those with less of an appetite or if you’re simply wanting to enjoy a lighter bite. Hearty portions of chocolate brownie and apple & berry fruit crumble with custard topped off a glorious pub lunch. Our new favourite local.

Inspired by independent tapas bars in Barcelona and Madrid, Porta’s aim is to keep things simple, relaxed and informal. The rustic restaurant’s candlelit atmosphere creates a chilled vibe, perfect for grabbing a bite after work or cosy dinner with friends. The menu is enthusiastically Iberian, representing many tapas bar classics. Everything is handmade in-house – you can certainly tell love has been put into each dish.

Amid beautiful blooms and vibrant blue cocktails, we were greeted by charismatic owner James, who told us the chef would be sending out a selection of favourites from the Zuma x Parea menu (the new Pan-Asian menu, which launched a few months ago). First up, nibbles. A bowl of spicy edamame beans followed by small plates of succulent and peanuty chicken satay and ebi tempura – some of the best prawn tempura we’ve tasted, with a batter so light we could’ve had four more portions! A beautifully presented colourful board of sushi came next, consisting of fresh slices of salmon and seabass sashimi, delicious and crispy salmon and tuna sushi tacos, and a selection of uramaki ‘inside-out’ sushi rolls. To complete, juicy king prawns ‘Holy Basil’ with chilli and asparagus, and a plate of tender chicken pad thai – a noodle lover’s dream. Zumu x Parea is available on Deliveroo and is the place to see and be seen with summer fast approaching.

We nibbled on olives as we browsed the menu (they were pitted too, a nice touch that restaurants often forget). As with many tapas bars, the idea is to order a couple of dishes at a time and then go back for more; we couldn’t wait to jump in. Round one: traditional potato and onion tortilla, buffalo mozzarella tomato and basil salad, and purple sprouting broccoli with romesco sauce and crunchy almonds. Round two: we ordered both the specials on offer – crispy fried king prawn croquetas and seabass fillet with tomato salsa. Round three: the meats – soft and pink bavette steak with pickled walnuts, fennel seed and chilli, and seared pork ‘Presa Iberica’ with mojo verde (be aware, this is supposed to come pink, don’t let it put you off!) We ended with the Portugal’s classic custard dessert, pastel de nata – delicious! At Porta, there’s no need to book, the restaurant encourages diners just come along and grab a space. Our verdict? Good atmosphere, great drinks, and even better food. Porta tapas bars can also be found in Salford and Chester. Porta 50 Greenwood Street, Altrincham WA14 1RZ 0161 465 6225

Rex Cinema Wilmslow Fay Wertheimer sat down with Amanda Mundin to talk cinema… Why Cinema’s? Cinema can be life-changing for a community, bringing vibrancy to a high street and promoting civic pride. Cinema makes you think, open your eyes, share things, meet other locals and even watch movies you never normally would do. Film’s in my blood. Mum was an usherette and played movie music at home. Now our three sons and grandchildren are hooked too. how did you find the savoy? We’re on constant lookout in areas where residents appreciate the arts. Around Christmas 2014, the Savoy was up for redevelopment. Like Wilmslow‘s Rex Revival Group, Heaton folks slapped on a preservation order, designating the building for community use only. Tailormade for Tony, the Savoy needed restoring. Its roof leaked. Its facade was crumbling. He rented the place and with our youngest son, Louis, began the rebuild in March 2015. After opening that summer, he and his wife Sophie relocated as managers – before little Hugo arrived! And the Rex? It closed in 1995. We toured the site during its Multiyork phase. The projection box and sealed-off cinema space excited us. When the furniture chain folded, Tony contacted the building’s owners, who welcomed a family business as tenants. In late December, after 18 crazy weeks, the Rex was revamped and ready. We’ve a high street entrance, a lift and two screens for up to 210 people. Who decides what is screened? Sophie and I match a variety of commercial, classic and cultural films with our audiences. We underestimated The Favourite but quickly brought it back! Saturday night’s our biggie. Both picture houses seat 390 people max. Distributors ask almost half the ticket price per film, so profits are limited from the start. Having two screens in Wilmslow, we use the 60-seater for The Met’s ‘live‘ Saturday performances and cover costs in the larger screen. Film buffs Amanda and Tony Mundin are thrilled if your visit to their Savoy Cinema in Heaton Moor or the Rex in Wilmslow has rekindled your love of film. If you’ve recaptured the intimacy, focus and escapism of the silver screen or introduced your children to the medium, you’ve made the Mundins’ day. Since 2006, former freelance script supervisor and short film-maker Amanda and her businessman-cum-expert-renovator husband Tony from Belper have opened four small luxury picture houses, each offering the cosiness no multiplex can replicate.

is competition tough? We’re independent, realistic and respect other small operators. We also recognise the appeal of multiplexes. There’s no competition – we present the same art form, just in different environments. how have locals reacted? Apart from a disgruntled shopper wanting a sofa not a film ticket, everyone’s been great. Historically, movies offer a cheap night out, a distraction during both good and difficult times. If youngsters catch the movie bug, the future looks rosy.

EMPLoYMEnt LAW If you’re working in the UK, employment law is going to affect you at some point. So, what is it? Employment law sets out the relationship between employers and employees. On the one hand, what the company expects from the employee and what they can ask you to do; on the other, what your rights are as an employee. When you start a new job, or when a company is employing a new member of the team, there’s normally a contract that you both sign which sets out these expectations and rights. All good. With any luck that could be as complicated as it gets, and both employees and employers will work within the terms of the contract. However, if you’re an employer, how do you make sure you’re on top of constantly evolving employment legislation when handling your relationships with staff? And, if you’re employed by a company and things go wrong, what are your rights and what can you do?

58

April/May 2019 | salutions.co.uk

Employers – Get your house in order Whether you employ one person or 1,000 people, as an employer, you’ve got an obligation to make sure you abide by employment legislation, which sets out people’s rights when they’re working for you in different roles, lays down guidelines to ensure there is no discrimination, and highlights health and safety rules which you need to adopt in your business. It’s important to regularly review your contracts of employment to make sure they’re still compliant with current legislation, and to ensure you have properly documented all the terms and conditions of someone’s employment. Important also is to keep proper written records throughout their time working with you of any pay reviews, annual performance assessments and any issues or disputes that may have arisen over their time working with you.

For larger organisations of more than a few people, it’s likely you’ll have a management structure of some sort in place, with staff reporting in to a number of managers, who in turn report into senior staff. Do your staff and managers all know what your procedures are and are they aware of how they need to conduct themselves in their everyday interactions with staff to make sure they don’t overstep the line and breach employment legislation? Regular training can help protect your company from falling foul and ending up with a disgruntled employee. Employees – You’re not alone When you first get an employment contract to sign, for starters, make sure you read it. You’d be amazed the proportion of people who don’t read their contracts thoroughly. Better still, show it to an employment solicitor to check that you’re not signing up to any unreasonable terms and ask to

see any other policies referred to in the contract, so you know what they say. If you have a regular performance review, take time to make a note of the key points discussed. Hopefully you’ll never need them, but it’s incredibly helpful to have a record so you can prove what was said if things go south. Despite this, sometimes things go wrong. If you have had a disagreement in the workplace, been discriminated against or have been unfairly dismissed, then our employment lawyers can assist. Difficulties in the workplace can leave you feeling stressed and needing to resolve issues so you can get on with your life as quickly as possible.

When it goes wrong Prosperity Law will provide you with accurate guidance on current employment laws and regulations and how they apply to both you and your business. We work with both employees and employers to provide clear legal advice on all aspects of employment law, whatever their requirements: • • • • • • • •

Employment tribunal representation Discrimination Unfair and wrongful dismissal Redundancies Settlement agreements In-house training and advice Service agreements General employment advice

With a reputation for being both highly commercial and responsive, we aim to not only advise on the employment and contract law but the wider business impact and commercial implications. Need a chat? Lorraine harvey

Dr Gwilym Morris

Aidan Silver is Personal Training Lead at Nuffield Health Didsbury. Nuffield Health provides cuttingedge gym facilities, integrated clinical facilities and the highest standards of matron-led clinical care. It is also the largest provider of physiotherapy outside the NHS.

Lorraine Harvey is a Principal Lawyer in the Family Team at Slater and Gordon, Manchester. She’s worked in the family law field for almost two decades and has successfully handled cases that include everything from prenuptial agreements to divorce and dissolution.

Dr Gwilym Morris is Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Manchester Hospital who treats all aspects of heart disease, with expertise in heart rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation. He performs catheter ablations to treat heart rhythm disorders.

how much exercise should i be aiming to do each week? NHS guidelines advise at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, such as jogging or cycling, each week. In addition, strength exercises, working all the major muscles, on two or more days a week is recommended. Increasing activity by any amount is beneficial for your health – if you sit down for long periods each day, try setting an alarm to stand up for a few minutes each hour.

i’m married but separated and have a new partner. is this still classed as adultery? If a married couple are together, living in the same house and one of them has a sexual relation with another outside the marriage, this is a clear-cut case of adultery. However, things can seem more complicated if the couple have separated but are still legally married. I’m often asked if being in a sexual relationship with someone else after separating from a spouse can constitute adultery. The simple answer to this question is yes. In the eyes of the law, you’re still married to your spouse.

What are palpitations? Palpitations are very common and many people will have them at some time in their lives, they can feel unpleasant and may cause distress. This sensation can also be felt in the neck, throat or chest. The experience differs a lot; some people will describe feeling their heart pounding hard, others a feeling of a fast or fluttering heartbeat.

What advice would you give to someone looking to improve their diet? Many people can benefit from increasing the amount of fruit and veg they consume each day. Aim for 10 portions each day from a variety of different sources. The majority should come from veg, and it’s good practice to eat as many different colours as possible. Cutting down sugar and processed food wherever possible will have great health benefits too. how can i make sure that i stick to a new fitness regime? One of the biggest mistakes people make is to change too much, too quickly. Set yourself small goals initially that are challenging but manageable – the positive reinforcement this brings will help create a lasting habit. Write down your goals, share them with a friend, and find someone else to train with – this will help you to stay on track.

how can i use adultery as a reason to initiate divorce proceedings? Adultery is commonly relied upon to initiate divorce proceedings. In most cases, adultery is admitted by the other spouse. If the other spouse isn’t willing to admit to adultery, it can be difficult to prove. There may be evidence of the infidelity in the form of messages, social media or from one partner catching the other in the act. You cannot rely on adultery if you’ve lived with your spouse for six months after you found out about it. Does adultery impact divorce settlements? People often mistakenly believe that a court will be more likely to award settlements in favour of the person petitioning for divorce on the basis of adultery. This isn’t the case, as the court doesn’t pass any kind of moral judgement when deciding how to divide the matrimonial pot.

What causes heart palpitations? Stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco can cause palpitations, they can also be triggered by emotional and psychological factors, for example, excitement, anxiety and nervousness. It’s also common to have extra heart beats called ‘ectopics’, they cause the sensation of a skipped beat, these are not dangerous. Sometimes palpitations can be caused by a heart rhythm disorder, also called ‘arrhythmia’. What are the treatment options? Whether you need treatment will depend on the underlying cause of your palpitations and how severe your symptoms are. If you have a history of heart disease or there are other symptoms such as chest pain, blackouts or prolonged fast palpitations, then assessment from a cardiologist specialising in arrhythmia (a heart rhythm disorder) may be needed.

The five stages of divorce What to expect when going through a divorce SEPARATION

FINANCES

Separating from a spouse is never easy. It’s a time of emotional upheaval for both parties and is especially disrupting for any children involved. Unfortunately, a spouse does not only face emotional challenges upon separation but also the challenges surrounding the practicalities of separation, such as residency and finances.

Often one of the most complex matters for people to deal with is the finances. Whether you have been in the marriage for decades or still within the early stages of the relationship, the basic steps people should take following advice and guidance can not only result in an improved prospect of maintaining an amicable relationship with your former partner, but also keep your legal costs down to a minimum.

Importantly in the first instance it’s in the best interest of everyone involved to ensure that immediate discussions post separation remain as amicable as possible – and it may be preferable for any discussions to take place in a neutral environment, rather than in the matrimonial home.

MEDIATION Going straight to Court doesn’t have to be the only option after separation, as mediation can help to sort out differences around money, property and children. Mediation gives both parties the opportunity to sit down and, in their own words, put their side of the story across in a safe and neutral environment. The mediator can encourage you to think about things from another perspective and to compromise in order to reach a conclusion that everyone is happy with. They will listen and help you communicate with your ex-partner effectively, and will remain impartial - not taking sides.

THE DIVORCE PETITION Divorce proceedings can be made through the Family Court to formally bring the marriage to an end. The person who starts the divorce petition is known as the Petitioner, and they must prove the marriage has irretrievably broken down by establishing one of the following facts:

Whilst obtaining your decree absolute, (the document you receive from court which legally ends your marriage), is the ultimate goal in a divorce, this does not deal with the matrimonial finances. There is an entirely separate process that must be followed to ensure no further claims may be made by your former spouse against your finances.

CHILDREN The first concern when parents have made the decision to separate must be arrangements for the children, with a priority issue being how children are told about their parents’ separation and how they are best supported through it. Then the question arises of how the children’s time will be divided between the parents once they have established separate households. Financial arrangements concerning children also need to be discussed. Separating parents should consider how the change in circumstances will affect how they each contribute financially to ensure their children’s needs are met. In addition, parents may also need to consider reviewing their Wills to provide for their children in the event of their death.

Decree Nisi and Decree Absolute Once the court has confirmed that the papers have been served on the Respondent, the next step is for the Petitioner to proceed in making the application for the Decree Nisi. Once the court has pronounced the Decree Nisi, the Petitioner must wait for six weeks and one day before they can apply for the decree to be made Absolute. Until the Decree is made absolute, parties are still married and therefore all protection under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1979 still applies.

Sara Makepeace-Taylor is Head of Lower School at Bowdon Preparatory School (BPS) – an independent day school for girls aged three to 11. The school is consistently ranked as one of the region’s leading schools.

Ian Boasman is a Chartered Financial Adviser at Kellands (Hale) Ltd and provides retirement, investment and tax planning advice to individuals, families and business owners.

Why are Corporate Golf Days great for businesses? Corporate Golf Days give you the opportunity to meet important clients, associates and suppliers and work together in more of a relaxed setting. Spending time with them allows to improve existing relationships and help towards conversion success. There’s no better way to inspire innovation than a day away from the desk and out in the great outdoors!

how do i know which school will be best for my child? The best way to know is to visit the school and meet the Headteacher and staff. Get a sense of how they are as role models. See how they interact with pupils. What is the atmosphere and school ethos like? You will quickly gain a sense of how the school is run and whether this will suit your child and your family.

What is the most common question you get asked by clients? “Is my pension pot sufficient to last me in retirement?” The answer has so many variables and is different for everyone! My job is to identify them all, such as: how much do you need in retirement; what are the risks; what returns should you expect; and what are your annual charges, to name but a few.

What are the special features of an independent school? Features such as small class sizes and outstanding facilities make independent schools, like Bowdon Prep School, a desirable choice. They are able to offer more flexible approaches to teaching a wider curriculum and tend to offer extensive extra-curricular activities too. Additionally, there is an emphasis on providing a holistic education through the development of emotional and social intelligence as well as leadership skills.

Why are charges so important? The higher your plan charges, the more this drags on your long-term performance. A new regulatory directive called MIFID II is now driving the full disclosure of costs people are paying in their pensions, shares, ISAs and investments. We’re finding that many investment fund costs are higher than originally thought! Sometimes, fund annual management charges can be over 2% per annum alone. We believe this is too high and aim to deliver this service for around 2% per annum in total, inclusive of plan charges and ongoing professional advice fees.

What usually happens during a Corporate Golf Day? It can vary and is dependent on what the client wants to achieve out of their day – but traditionally, the day will begin with a breakfast before the golfer’s head outside, followed by 18 holes of golf, lunch and a prize presentation showcasing results of the day over a formal or informal dinner. What should i look for when choosing a venue to host it? One of the most important factors is finding the perfect venue. I’d recommend booking in for a show round of the Golf Course and event facilities and meet your event coordinator, who will look after you in the run up to the event and during it, to ensure a fantastic event is delivered for your business.

Can a school offer a mix of traditional and modern teaching approaches? This is something we’re very passionate about at Bowdon Prep School. We believe in creating a strong educational foundation by focusing on the traditional academic subjects and building on this with extended skills, such as resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and reciprocity. This approach gives children a greater breadth of capability and increased mental agility and will serve them well in their future endeavours.

how can i check my existing plans are suitable and cost effective? You can either contact your pension or investment provider directly or take advantage of Kellands’ free initial consultation to discuss your options and existing plans. With your authority, we can speak to these companies on your behalf to ascertain plan information, which can then be discussed with you in more detail.

EDUCATIOn nEWS Bowdon Prep links up with Altrincham Prep to celebrate World Book Day

This year’s World Book Day saw a ‘novel’ collaboration between two local leading independent schools, Bowdon Preparatory

The schools swapped ‘book gifts’ too. Each pupil was asked to donate a well-loved book and to explain why they had enjoyed it. The resulting class libraries mean that the books will be enjoyed again and again.

Andrew Whittaker, Headmaster of APS, said, ”In the past, we’ve shared books inside our school on World Book Day, but linking up with Bowdon Prep gave our boys access to a wider choice of great books!”

Withington are GChQ CyberFirst Girls competition finalists!

The Withington Year 8 CyberFirst Girls competition finalists

Four Withington Girls’ School (WGS) Year 8 pupils have won through to the final of the CyberFirst Girls competition, a contest of problem-solving and code-cracking challenges organised by the National Cyber Security Centre, a part of GCHQ. The group were delighted to be judged one of the top ten in the nationwide competition involving over 3,350 teams. The initial round of the competition involved taking part in an online challenge where they had to put their cryptography, cyber security, networking and logic and coding skills to the test. Now, as one of the

top ten teams, they go forward to the face-to-face final to crown the UK’s most cyber-capable young women, to be held in Edinburgh in March.

Head of ICT at WGS, Mr Andrew Snowden, said: “This is a tremendous achievement. I have been incredibly impressed by the girls’ perseverance in tackling the challenges set by the NCSC. Not only are the activities fun and engaging, but they inspire girls to consider cyber security as a career path.” This GCHQ-led competition aims to address gender imbalance in cyber security

and it is bearing fruit with a record 12,000 participants in the 2019 competition. Currently, just 11% of the global cyber workforce are women. As an added incentive for all competitors, the NCSC will be offering around 600 free places on specially commissioned four-day CyberFirst Defenders courses in April and May 2019. These courses will be ‘all girls’ and a mix of residential and non-residential at locations across the UK.

stockport Grammar school celebrates triumphant rugby season

Stockport Grammar School’s rugby players have won the Under 16 Cheshire Cup, bringing an outstanding season of challenging games to a fitting end. On top of this victory, more than 20 of the school’s rugby players have recently been selected for teams and training groups at club and county level. Nineteen rugby players from the Under 14 to the Under 16 teams have been selected for Developing Player Pathways and Development Groups with Sale Sharks. Meanwhile, Fifth Year Bradley Boyd has been selected to join the Sharks’ U16 Player Development Group. Harry Reeder-Hirst and Ali-Hamza Peerzada have been selected to play for the Cheshire U15 squad. Fostering a love of reading Children love stories and at Lady Barn House School, we recognise the importance of nurturing and extending this enthusiasm, particularly in the light of the competing demands of electronic games and devices. As well as a modern and varied reading scheme, the school has two well-stocked libraries, from which children borrow books each week. Lady Barn House School regularly hosts award-winning authors such as Ross Mackenzie, Rob Biddulph and Matt Brown. Our pupils love to hear these

writers talk about their ideas and the inspiration for their books. Author Faye Evans (pictured) visited school on World Book Day to read her new book to the younger children, and we eagerly await a visit from Francesca Simon of Horrid Henry fame later this term. An enjoyment of reading leads naturally to a desire to write stories. Pupils take part in national writing competitions, whilst the older children write and edit the school magazine, Lady Barn Life. Greater Manchester u15 netball Champions! Withington Girls’ School’s U15 netball team emerged victorious at the Greater Manchester County Netball Tournament hosted at Bury Grammar School in March. After topping their group, the U15s went on to victory in their semi-final against Altrincham Grammar School for Girls before winning a closely fought final (11-9) against Cheadle Hulme School. Head of PE, Mrs Liz O’Neal, said: “Very well done to this team who played excellent netball in very challenging weather conditions. We punch well above our weight in competitive sports, given that we are a smaller school than most of our competition. It is testament to the drive and determination of these girls that they’ve done so well!”

Head Boy, Raphael McMahon, and Head Girl, Lily Danson, have been classmates at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS) since Year 7 – and both have been offered places at University of Cambridge’s Gonville & Caius College. Raphael intends to read modern languages (Spanish and German) after deferring a year to travel. He said: “Going to the same College will be nice, it’s comforting there will be a friendly face when I get there.” Lily, recipient of CHS’s Economics Essay Prize, has been offered a place to study economics. She said: “The application process was hard, but you have to believe you can do it. My teachers advice was so useful.” Hoping to join Raphael and Lily at the University of Cambridge, current Upper Sixth students Jason Brown and Adam Wolowczyk have received offers to read engineering at Trinity College and medicine at Homerton College respectively.

students in tanzania getting education paid for thanks to Ellesmere College Parents society

Ellesmere College Parents Society (ECPS) has committed to sponsoring Lomnyaki Ezekiel Laibunye and Estomil Issaya Lekundayo to the sum of £125 a year throughout their six-year senior schooling in the African nation. ECPS have made a donation to the Monduli Green Project each year for the past few years, but this year decided to up the annual contribution.

Ellesmere College has a long history of supporting the Monduli Green Project and the school community supports 55 students in all. Students from the Shropshire college visit the project every other year to help. It was set up in 2008 by Cathy Allen, an English as an Additional Language teacher at Ellesmere College, to work with schools and communities in Tanzania to improve the environment and facilities for children. Cathy said: “There are many children in Tanzania who don’t get to go to school or fail to finish their education. “With just under 70 per cent of the population living below the poverty line, many children are forced into a situation

of trying to find work to help their families rather than go to school. “This commitment by the Ellesmere College Parents Society means we can ensure two more students can have a full education without having to worry about how they can afford to stay at school. “It’s difficult to explain just what this means to them and their parents unless you have seen the difficulties people experience in Tanzania first-hand.” For more about the Monduli Green Project, visit monduligreen.com

A pawsome visit from Dermot o’Leary Junior readers at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS) enjoyed a purr-fect start to their morning when they were joined by one of the UK's best loved broadcasters, X Factor and BBC Radio 2 presenter, Dermot O’Leary. Visiting CHS to launch his latest book in story series Toto the Ninja Cat, the pupils – joined by primary school pupils from around the region – heard about the real-life Toto, rescued as a kitten along with her brother Silver by Dermot and his wife, Dee. During morning and afternoon sessions hosted by CHS in collaboration with Simply Books, Dermot showed photos of his pets, spoke of why his love of Victorian England gave the story its Victoriana theme and how the animal characters display traits of his friends and the famous. Dermot told how his neighbour’s kitten, George, wandered into the giraffe enclosure at London Zoo, which inspired the story’s setting, and the pupils were given a masterclass in sketching the central character with illustrator Nick East. Between the sessions, Dermot met CHS Sixth Form students with an interest in pursuing a career in the media. In a Q&A, he told them not to underestimate the importance of work experience and to make the most of every opportunity.

Mayor of Greater Manchester: Withington pupils “will step forward and make things happen" A visit by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr Andy Burnham, to Withington Girls’ School gave over 500 pupils the opportunity to hear how they could play a role in the Mayor’s vision for Greater Manchester. ‘Working together for Manchester’s future’ was the theme of the visit and the Mayor was given an insight into the partnership work undertaken by the pupils and staff of Withington. Highlights of the visit included 30 Year 5 pupils from Northenden Primary School participating in a ‘Young Chemistry Communicators’ workshop run by Withington Sixth Form students, and Junior School pupils rehearsing a musical performance for local senior citizens planned for the school’s Citizenship Day in the summer term. In his address to the assembled school, Mr Burnham said: “Your generation gives me hope because I think you see the world differently. You don’t see differences

between people as a negative, you see them as a positive. Your generation also has a clear understanding of the issues that affect us all, such as climate change, and you are demanding that something more is done quickly.” He mentioned that young people had been key players at the Greater Manchester Green Summit earlier that week, where he had committed our region to going further and faster than anywhere else in the country, setting a date of 2038 to achieve carbon neutrality. “I would like to encourage you all to be true to the spirit of Greater Manchester,” said Mr Burnham, “a place that stands up for what is right and demands change if things are not right, a place that does things differently. I have huge amounts of faith in you and, reinvigorated by what I’ve seen in this school today, I believe you will step forward and make things happen.”

Withington’s Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, said: “As a school that believes we can empower young people to lead change and innovation in Manchester and beyond by working in partnership with those in the local community, we welcomed the opportunity to share with Mr Burnham just a small part of the work we undertake with our partners. Our pupils were also interested to hear about the Mayor’s future vision for our region and the contribution that they could make to that vision.”

Meet Mark turner headmaster of Lady Barn house school

By Fay Wertheimer

Engaging and utterly committed to mixedsex education for three to eleven-year-olds, classicist Mark Turner is in his third year as Headmaster of Cheadle’s 500-strong Lady Barn House School, the largest preparatory school in the north

After ‘defecting’ from secondary teaching in 1988, Mark spent two decades in both state and independent primary schools. Following his second headship (a sevenyear stint at Warwick Preparatory School), he moved up North in September 2016.

We’re neither a hothouse nor cram school, but we do attain great results. Our broad curriculum is well-rounded and extends much further than maths and English. For instance, we introduce Mandarin from Year 1.’’

Privately educated, Mark Turner has complete insight into your expectations as a parent and your child’s need for a tailor-made programme. His belief in honesty when identifying the appropriate senior school for your youngster is easily upheld at this independent school. Founded in Fallowfield in 1873 by the trailblazing Victorian promoter of co-education, W.H. Herford, Lady Barn House School has no links or allegiances to any secondary school.

He continues, “Education’s about helping children to think for themselves. For them to develop a sense of purpose, community, ethos and self-worth, we start early. We want your child to travel a kind, friendly journey of discovery, opportunity and success – and to enjoy that hard-earned success. But it’s equally important each individual learns and displays ‘oldfashioned’ manners, respect and kindness to others, not merely here within our culturally and religiously diverse school community, but outside it, too.”

Lady Barn House School is known for achieving 11 + successes. Mark explains, “We have 70 brilliant full and part-time teachers who are passionate about their vocation, love children and devise innovative teaching techniques for them.

Lady Barn's teacher-pupil ratio is capped at 22-1. Teaching assistants for its 3-9-yearolds boost this ratio to 11-1. Your child has a choice of 70 extra-curricular clubs, ranging from music, computer coding, drama and debating to archery, football,

cricket and netball. The school’s crosscountry and indoor ski teams are North of England champions and Lady Barn gymnasts have represented Great Britain. Complementing these outstanding sporting attainments are four choirs, an orchestra and ensembles, plus an active drama department, soon to perform Bugsy Malone. And should your child require special assistance, Lady Barn will do its utmost to accommodate and help. Children are Mark Turner’s priority. He explains, “We must provide our youngsters with the tools to do a good job. We must also do a good job ourselves in providing those tools. Once we know our children have grasped and acquired those tools, they will be equipped for life and hopefully apply them as good citizens.” Approachable and down-to-earth Mark Turner conducts regular tours for parents interested in this unique and well-established prep school. If you think the Lady Barn education may suit your family, please get in touch.

BEAUTY TECH

You might think just because I love machines and outdoor sports that I’m not interested in hair, skincare and fragrance. But you’d be wrong – I’m as vain as they come. So, for this issue, I went looking for the best gadgets for beauty and beyond.

Foreo Luna 2

An ultrasonic facial cleanser and massager in one, the Luna 2 is one of the most effective ways of cleaning pores and exfoliating dead skin cells, combined with an anti-ageing massage function that emits micro-pulses to stimulate the face, visibly reduce fine lines, and even aid the absorption of your chosen skincare products. Colour coded to suit specific skin types, the Luna 2 is priced from £169. foreo.com

Philips Sonicare

This is surely the Rolls Royce of toothbrushes, with technology including a brush pressure sensor and smart notifications when it’s time to replace a worn-out head. The densely packed bristles give a cleaner feel and noticeable stain removal too. The pick of the bunch is the ProtectiveClean 4300 at £299.99. philips.co.uk

Dyson Airwrap

Having three daughters, I’ve just about mastered the art of doing pigtails without making anyone cry. I’m told that the Airwrap is the tool to take that to the next level. The biggest problem with any hair styling electricals is extreme heat and the damage it can cause, and this does away with that problem.

78

The Airwrap has been described as the ultimate hair innovation and it makes light work of curls, waves and straightening alike. Different packages are available for different hair types, starting from £399. dyson.co.uk

Un Air De Diptyque

Gillette Fusion5 Proshield

We all like to wear a fragrance, but fragrancing the space around you is surely the height of decadence. Scented candles and room sprays are a little treat for most of us, but this electronic diffuser is a whole new world of luxury. Available with a choice of seven cartridges of Diptyque’s most opulent fragrances, this device also looks as fabulous as it smells. £240. diptyqueparis.com

I’m a lazy man, so it’s convenient for me that beards and general hairiness are currently endorsed by the fashion police. But, it doesn’t suit everyone. Gillette, for example, would much rather we were all clean shaven, and keeps coming up with amazing new ideas to tempt us down that road. now with five lubricated blades, plus a precision trimmer, the Fusion5 Proshield also has an articulated ball joint between the handle and the head, ensuring that no contour or corner is missed. £5.99 gillette.co.uk

OUTDOORS FIT FOR ADVENTURE By Oliver Chesher

In this age of online shopping, there’s a reason why high street outdoor shops still do a roaring trade. Even if you fancy yourself as an extreme survival expert (every dad in a fleece does), it’s still best to prepare for your adventure with a bit of face-to-face help. I was amazed at how much new information I learned.

There’s no substitute for the in-store experience, especially when you’re planning to take on the elements. It’s the only way to truly appreciate equipment fit and function, quality and performance, comfort and, above all, safety. One of the best is Ellis Brigham, a high-end outdoor retailer that started nearly a century ago just up the road in Harpurhey, and today is still a family business with 24 shops nationwide. I was recently preparing for a wild camping expedition, so I went to the Deansgate branch to get measured up for a pair of hiking boots and a backpack. Even having spent decades obsessing over outdoor kit,

Ellis Brigham’s heritage began in personalised boot fittings, and with today’s technology from some of the world’s top brands, it is able to measure every aspect of your feet, gait and physiology to prepare you for any conditions. The Salomon Alp High boots (£174.99) I chose were a revelation – and with the opportunity to clamber over some obstacles in the shop, I was able to test them out properly. Team member Sam even showed me how to lace up correctly, to spread load across the front of the foot for ankle support. no less important than appropriate footwear is how you carry your gear. Camping trips can involve lugging a heavy load. Even a short distance with an ill-fitting backpack can not only cause back and shoulder pain but potentially lasting damage to the entire upper body, hips and core.

I chose the Osprey Aether AG 70 (£199.99). 70 litres sounds massive, but for winter or longer expeditions, capacity is essential. AG stands for ‘Anti-Gravity’ and I was amazed to learn – when experimenting with weights on the shop floor – how the infinite adjustability really does make it feel like the load isn’t really there. Sam showed me how to set the custom mouldable hip belt and torso length adjusters, plus how to use correct packing techniques and compression straps to distribute the weight across the body. Amazingly, I was able to walk with correct posture fully laden, which meant I was able to comfortably carry a few luxuries out into the forest. Campfire baked Camembert and fine wines – I was never a believer in travelling light! Thanks to Ellis Brigham, ellis-brigham.com

The first thing I learned, having been strapped into a measuring contraption, is that you should carry most of the weight on your hips, with as little as possible actually weighing on the shoulders. The second thing is that the distance between your waist and shoulders is important to measure, because one size definitely does not fit all. 79

By Oliver Chesher

ONE OF ONE

It’s an interesting challenge, writing about the new Rolls Royce Phantom, simply because there’s very little (if anything) to compare it to. Every aspect you examine is peerless – it occupies a class of its own.

Other more subtle factors become noteworthy when you take a closer look for yourself. For example, one of the defining characteristics of a luxury car is its quietness, which is no mean feat to achieve when you consider the need for all that power to shift its massive weight. Of course, there are other luxury cars available, The Phantom’s 6.7 litre V12 is all but silent, and but the Phantom still manages to distance from the driver’s seat, you struggle even to tell itself by a gulf. There are the obvious factors, if it’s running – yet it can effortlessly outpace even modern high-performance sports cars such as size and price – even the short without showing any strain. wheelbase model is more than half a metre longer than Mercedes Benz’ biggest S-Class, and the base price is £362,000.

We plan to look at the new Phantom in more detail in future issues, thanks to Rolls Royce Motor Cars Manchester, where this astonishing vehicle can be seen and experienced in real life. rolls-roycemotorcars-manchester.co.uk

INVESTMENT PIECE Looking at the Rolls Royce Phantom sparked the familiar fantasy: what’s your dream garage? If money were no object – as is the case for Phantom owners – what else would you have? For me, it’s this, and has always been this: the Land Rover Defender. When Land Rover stopped making the last version of the Defender last year, it was the brand’s most basic model and was one of the most unsophisticated vehicles still in production. It was so outdated that modern safety regulations finally killed it. But in advance of the replacement being released next year, values of older Defenders are going through the roof. Everyone from farmers to fashionistas wants one. The ultra-rare 70th Anniversary V8 and the final editions in various unique shades of green are particularly highly sought after, but even battered and corroded ancient high-milers are to be cherished. With minimal if any luxuries or gadgets – it doesn’t even have airbags or satnav – the Defender is the polar opposite of the Phantom, yet both are icons of British motoring heritage and they complement each other perfectly. I can’t wait to see what the new Defender is like when it comes out. I’m prepared to bet that plenty of Rolls Royce owners will be interested in adding one to their collections too. 80
