I’ve just had the busiest two months of my life, so the summer holidays can’t come fast enough for me. A huge highlight was flying First Class to Miami with British Airways. It was a whistle-stop tour but an amazing one. I’d love to go again, and as soon as possible, please! Read more about my luxury flight and stateside adventure on page 30. Meanwhile, Salim was invited to Tomorrow Cardiovascular Screening, which is based at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance and is all about early detection of cardiovascular issues. He was a little apprehensive, I must admit. You can find out about his experience (and results!) over on page 50.
”
On page 38, we review the Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road, which is just a short walk from the city centre and well placed if you want to enjoy an evening in the city and don’t want to drive home or pay city-centre hotel prices. The hotel only opened last September, and is well worth a visit. Brainwave’s Strictly Summer event at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa was a huge success, raising over £15,000! Well done Kunal Trehan and his professional dancing partner, Victoria Bennett, and to Ann-Marie Atkins and her professional dancing partner, Callam Thomson, for being joint winners.
Not one for exercise, last month, I decided to try a private Barrecore lesson. I exercised every single part of my body during the 55-minute session. It wasn’t easy, to say the least, but I enjoyed it and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Watch out, you may see me in a Barrecore studio soon! Read more on page 41.
Of course, there’s plenty more to read in this issue; from interiors, holidays, health and beauty to fascinating local people, Emily’s Brunch Guide and details of her stay at King Street Townhouse.
Enjoy the summer break and good luck to all children (and parents!) waiting for exam results. We’ll see you again in October.

LOCAL NEWS Didsbury Business Games champions raise hundreds for charity Staff at a North West accountancy firm have proven they are good sports after raising money for a hospital charity. 2019 Didsbury Business Games champion Booth Ainsworth, which is part of the Baldwins Group, has raised over £1,695 for The Christie following a series of fundraising events. Staff at Booth Ainsworth, who have supported the games since they started three years ago and have raised over £5,841 for The Christie, won the event for the second year in a row. Nine businesses from across Didsbury participated in the third annual Didsbury Business Games and helped to raise over £7,000 for The Christie, one of the largest hospital charities in the UK, contributing to the total of £30,000 over three years. The games, which are organised by volunteers from the Waterside Hotel and Leisure Club, were established with the aim of getting people active and encouraging them to enjoy a healthy work/life balance while helping to raise vital funds for a local charity. During the games, the teams competed in seven fun events, which included tenpin bowling and a sports day before finishing with a quiz. The funds raised this year will help with the proposed redevelopment of The Christie’s Paterson Building, which was damaged by fire in 2017, as a state-of-theart research centre, in partnership with the University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK.

club. Every year, Hays Travel North West, asks each of its stores to generate at least £500 for a chosen charity. Rebecca and her colleague Lucy Wilding decided to make a trip to their chosen cause.
Didsbury Good Neighbours has been named as the chosen charity for a yearlong fundraising drive by staff at Hays Travel in Didsbury. Manager Rebecca Dodd and the team will fundraise via cake sales, a raffle and a mystery coach trip for the charity based at the Holt Pavilion in Didsbury Park.
Rebecca, 24, said: “It has been lovely to visit the charity and see for ourselves what they do. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. You can see why it is so successful and valued by the people who visit.”
The charity aims to support senior members of the community through a volunteer befriending service and a weekly programme of activities, which includes organised talks, arts and crafts sessions, evening live music events and a lunch
One of the group’s regular attendees is Jamie Colclough, 60, of Didsbury, who said: “I really enjoy coming here because you see familiar faces who have become good friends and I feel like I can just be myself.”
Eleanor Cribb, Trustee of Didsbury Good Neighbours, said: “The money raised from generous businesses like Hays Travel is vital to ensuring we can keep helping people in our community and bringing together people of all different ages and backgrounds to do this.”

CQC rate Spire Manchester Hospital as 'Outstanding' Hospital Director Andrew Eadsforth said he was absolutely delighted with the rating, which he described as ‘a credit to everyone at the hospital’.
Manchester’s newest private hospital, Spire Manchester Hospital in Didsbury, has just been given an ‘Outstanding’ rating by the country’s health watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
“The CQC inspection really is crucial to us as a hospital and for us to get an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating is something we are all very proud of,” said Andrew. “It demonstrates a very strong performance from staff across the whole hospital, with the consistent delivery of high standards of care throughout. “When people come to a hospital, they expect the best in healthcare and I think this rating shows
that we can meet all those expectations.” Inspectors also praised hospital staff for providing a ‘strong and visible personcentred culture’ and said that they were ‘highly motivated and inspired to offer care that was kind and promoted people’s dignity’. Hospital Matron Dawn Davis added: “I have always known we had a great team here – not just the nurses but throughout the entire hospital – and this result just confirms that. “It’s great to receive such recognition and I actually think it will spur us on to even better things in the future.”

RESIDE IN STYAL…at Norcliffe Hall
If you fancy living in the ancestral family home of one of Cheshire’s most prominent industrial families, now is your chance. Norcliffe Hall in Styal has been released for sale by Savills. This majestic Grade II-listed building was built for prominent industrialist and economist Robert Hyde Greg, son of Samuel Greg of Quarry Bank Mill. It’s location, just three miles from Wilmslow, was chosen as it allowed swift access to and from the mill through 10 acres of stunning private grounds. The Gregs lived at Norcliffe until the early 1900s when it was tenanted. It was later turned into a nursing home. In 2006, it was sensitively converted into eight rental apartments. Now, for the first time in almost two centuries, Norcliffe is available on the open market to private individuals wishing to make it their home.
Each apartment is unique and has been comprehensively refurbished and redecorated to a superior standard with many original features retained, including oak doors, panelling and staircases, a bell tower, ornate plaster ceilings with heraldic embosses, stained glass windows featuring the Greg coat of arms, grand fireplaces and much more. Specification is of an exceptional standard with Lutron lighting systems, designer kitchens, contemporary style bathrooms and ensuites, porcelain wall and floor tiles and beautifully finished communal areas, including a visitors’ lounge and a residents’ fitness suite. Manicured hedges, vast lawns with perfect stripes and spectacular rhododendron bushes are a labour of love for the dedicated maintenance team, who have been ‘caretakers’ of the property for over ten years. Admire their handiwork, and Norcliffe’s impressive arboretum (designed by Greg himself), from the south terrace, where tables and chairs invite al fresco entertaining. BACK TO OLD-SCHOOL BUSINESS How Hale’s Luke Backhouse is busy taking his development business to the next ambitious level and proving that old-fashioned family values are alive and well in the North West
August/September 2019 | salutions.co.uk
19
We live in an era of the Rich Kids of Instagram, where the giddy recipients of inherited wealth showboat on social media. On paper, Luke Backhouse should fit right in. In reality, he’s running (pretty damn fast) in the opposite direction. We meet in his hometown of Liverpool. He’s immaculately dressed (suited and booted) and possessed of an old-school glamour and politeness. At just 29, he heads land development firm Backhouse Group, a position he inherited from his granddad, William Messham. Portfolio value? One billion and counting. “People assume I’m a spoilt rich kid,” he smiles, “but I like to prove people wrong!”
A not-so-easy ride to the top Aged 14, having been “politely” asked to leave school (“I didn’t like it and only enjoyed the sports”), Luke begged his granddad to let him join the family business. He assumed he’d be given an easy ride. He was wrong.
“My granddad wanted me to know the value of money,”
explains Luke, “so I didn’t walk straight into the office, I started on the sites as a labourer and worked my way up. I thought being the boss’s grandson (laughs) – I’d get get preferential treatment… but it was the complete opposite! He taught me how to earn a living; if you were lazy and didn’t work, you didn’t get anything.”
By Lisa Symonds | Simon David photography
His granddad, a self-made man who came from nothing, is his idol. From smoking cigars and drinking whisky to dressing sharply, it all comes from a desire to emulate him. His own father, Nigel, died when Luke was aged just four and he and his mother moved in with her parents. In an ideal world, my dad was next in line to take over the business (his voice breaks off), but we didn’t have that luxury.” Showstopping projects By the age of 20, Luke had started to acquire his own sites, prepping them for business or residential purposes and selling them on. Fast forward to 2019 and he’s CEO; specialising in acquiring land other people have failed to put to best use or tracking down sites with serious potential before they’ve even gone up for sale. There are a number of exciting new projects currently on the go countrywide, including the proposed Mersey View Gardens in Liverpool, a showstopping set of three towers overlooking the river and housing luxury apartments, restaurants and leisure facilities – all where a timber yard once stood. The application is soon to be submitted to the council. “About six summers ago, I went and sat on the land, alone,” recalls Luke. “It was peaceful and quiet. I thought, it would be a shame to turn this into industrial units, especially with a nature reserve next door’. Some people haven’t been so keen on the idea, but I don’t listen to anyone, I like to think outside the box. If you look at the Hudson River, yes, it’s lined with industrial properties, but it also features some of the most expensive apartments on the planet!” This leads us onto another of Luke’s great passions – New York City. He adores the place; its architecture, friendly vibe and the 24-hour culture that suits his ‘can’t bear to be anything but busy’ nature. It reminds him of his hometown, so much so, in
September, he opens his first restaurant and bar on Fifth Avenue – named, quite beautifully, after his and his partner Ashley’s six-month-old daughter, Saskia. The impact of fatherhood Rather than turning his life upside down, fatherhood has had the opposite effect: “A smile from her can make me forget a stressful day. I had OCD pretty badly and needed to have everything straight and in order. Now? There are toys all over the place, but I don’t care anymore! She’s an angel and it helps that she has the best mum I could have wished for.” Luke and Bowdon-born Ashley have lived in Hale for 18 months now. Do they think Saskia will take over the family business? “If it makes her happy, then we’re happy! I think it’s a tired stereotype that you need a boy to take over; I’ve seen lots of women do a better job than their brothers at taking over firms! I’m not saying I won’t spoil her, but I want to ensure she’s never in the position to rely on anybody. I don’t want someone to try and impress her with a big car, I want her to have worked to buy herself one!” He evidently adores strong women, speaking fondly of his mum, Lauretta, and “the real head of the family”, his grandma, Rhona (“if she speaks, we listen!”). Just taking off The company, whose main office is based in Widnes, is going from strength to strength. As I see it,” says Luke, “my granddad built the plane for me to fly and it’s now just taking off. I want to keep acquiring sites across the country, keep expanding. We are always on the lookout for the next big thing. We are debt-free and self-funded, so those who work with us won’t have to wait on us getting approval from a bank. I’ve been known to see land with potential and buy it the same day.” There are also plans afoot to launch a rugby league club in Liverpool with Marwan Koukash (former owner of the Salford Red Devils) and Andrew Mikhail of the Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group. His granddad must be proud? He laughs: “I hope so… he tells me now and then, but I don’t think he wants to give me a big head!” And with that, he’s off to the local boxing club to train. He used to compete when he was younger, now he just boxes to stay fit and funds local fighters. “I get my business mentality from boxing,” he says. “Be fearless. Never back down.” And who introduced him to the sport? His face lights up, “My granddad”.

The Regenerative Therapy Centre… Revolutionary joint treatment arrives in Manchester
Practising out of Manchester’s renowned European Scanning Centre, the newly opened clinic is revolutionising the treatment of sports injuries and joint problems for people of all ages, without the need for surgery. Guided by Centre Manager Anne-Marie Staples and joined by Mr Fahad G Attar (Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics) and Professor Waqar A Bhatti (Consultant Radiologist), who are leading the new therapy centre, we went behind the scenes to find out more… Bringing latest technologies to the region A team of highly respected, experienced clinicians and regenerative medicine experts are now offering a host of biological, noninvasive, cost-effective treatments for those suffering from sports injuries and joint arthritis. Both Mr Attar and Professor Bhatti are incredibly passionate about joint health and are assisted by a team of highly skilled specialists and therapists. 22
August/September 2019 | salutions.co.uk
The Regenerative Therapy Centre is part of the European Scanning Centre’s recent expansion; an opportunity to bring more of the very latest technological advancements to the region. The latter is famous for its MrOpen MRI, the only superconductive MRI scanner that allows patients to be scanned in a non-claustrophobic and full weight-bearing position, sitting or standing, and which brings accurate results and timely diagnosis. “The scanning centre has been based in Manchester for four years (at London’s Harley Street for 15), and opening the therapy centre here felt like a natural fit,” explains Anne-Marie. Transformative treatments, minus surgery There are only a select few places in the UK offering regenerative therapy, a new and rapidly expanding branch of medicine. “We are trying to bridge the gap between the start of joint issues and the need for surgery or replacement. We want to push
the need for an operation into the future or eliminate it completely,” explains Mr Attar. “Best of all, most of the treatments involve injecting a patient with blood/plasma from their own body, nothing extraneous.” The key treatments on offer are: •
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Ideal for those experiencing a pulling sensation or joint stiffness in the mornings or when they start to walk. Popular in sports medicine. New advances now allow the use of PRP therapy in early joint wear, reducing pain and allowing a swift return to normal activities. PRP therapy involves taking some of the patient’s own blood and placing it into a special centrifuge, which extracts platelets known to release healing proteins. The resulting solution is then injected directly into the injured site to reduce pain and stimulate repair and regeneration.
•
•
Viscosupplementation Ideal for Osteoarthritis pain management. A gel-like fluid called hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance surrounding joints but lacking in sufferers) is injected into the joint, lubricating it and acting as a shock absorber to restore movement and diminish pain. Autologous Protein Suspension (APS) Ideal for with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. This treatment is shown to protect cartilage cells and potentially slow the progression of osteoarthritis. Autologous means ‘from your own body’ and a sample of the patient’s own blood is put in a centrifugal device twice to separate out the ‘good’ proteins (with a high concentration of anti-inflammatory properties), which are then injected into the knee joint.
PRP and viscosupplementation to slow the degenerative wear and tear and pain cycle of arthritis and allow the joints to heal and regenerate. Patients from all walks of life “We’ve only been open a few weeks,” reveals Professor Bhatti, “and, so far, the response has been amazing! We’ve been treating people in their 20s up to those in their late 80s. It’s not just arthritis sufferers who attend either, there are lots of other injuries and conditions presented, such as tendonitis. “We see elite sportspeople who desire quick recovery, often these natural, non-surgical therapies are part of an on-going treatment plan for them, which makes sense. “We also treat the ‘weekend warrior’ who is suffering from tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow, for instance. Skier’s knee is another complaint which responds well to regenerative therapies. “Many of us look after our bodies – feeding it all the right nutrients – but we forget about nourishing our joints, they’re overlooked. As soon as people feel pain, hear clicking of joints, they should consider addressing these early stage symptoms and potentially avoid future surgery all together.”
The centre also offers (off-site) BMAC (bone marrow aspirate concentrate) and fat-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cell therapy, where restorative mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (taken from patient’s own bone barrow) are injected into the arthritic joint or injured site. The centre has also pioneered a Combination Therapy option, which combines mesenchymal stromal/stem cell treatment,
Why choose regenerative therapy? Put simply, operations are rarely welcomed occurrences, but more than that, says Mr Attar, they can lose people time and money: “Typically, following a knee replacement operation, for example, you’d need to take around 6-8 weeks off work to recover. For a self-employed person, this could be disastrous. From start to finish, a regenerative therapy treatment option takes around 30-60 minutes to complete and we suggest taking it easy for 24-48 hours afterwards. The results for APS, PRP and mesenchymal stem cell therapy can last up to two to three years or longer.”
Are the therapies painful? “Most people will have already given blood/had blood taken, so they will know how this feels,” says Anne-Marie. “When the solution is injected back into the joint, it can be uncomfortable, but we can help with that. Patients are treated in a warm, welcoming environment and cared for by experts. With regards to post-operative pain, it will be minimal and treatable with paracetamol.” Excellent finance options The Regenerative Therapy Centre offers interest-free finance on all treatments (visit regenerativetherapycentre.co.uk/finance for details) and many (but not all) private medical insurance policies will cover them. "MRI and Ultrasound scans carried out at the European Scanning Centre are covered by all insurers, and NHS patients (with the appropriate funding in place) can be referred by their local Trust or CCG". Next steps Potential patients can email or call The Regenerative Therapy Centre to discuss treatment options or attend one of their open days. The attentive team are always on hand to talk people through their options and will collate a tailormade information pack to read at their leisure. “All our treatments are bespoke,” says Anne-Marie, “we will find the best treatment for every individual. The team is empathetic and specialises in dealing with anxious patients. We will give you the time you need and deliver a holistic, five-star patient experience.”

Freedom to pack what you like There’s no need to compromise when packing, with a generous number of bags allowed in First. Bring both a cabin bag and laptop or handbag on board as well as up to three bags in the hold. Verdict Apart from a slight delay on our flight from Manchester to London, the check-in was seamless and most definitely faster.
Our dedicated cabin crew warmly welcomed us with a glass of Champagne and snacks, hung our coats in the wardrobe, and handed us our Temperley PJs, slippers and washbag. I’d had a busy month, so it was my intention to order my meal, choose a series, and sleep as much as I could on our nine-and-a-half-hour journey to Miami. I ordered Loch Fyne Kinglas salmon with Granny Smith apple and fennel mayonnaise to start, followed by seared fillet of aged Herefordshire beef with smoked bone marrow butter, Bolney Lychgate jus and wild mushroom duxelles with roasted baby carrots, spring greens and dauphinoise potato. For dessert, I had rhubarb and ginger timbale. It was as delicious as its description. You certainly don’t go hungry in a First Class cabin! A lemon and ginger tea arrived, just in time for me to settle down and watch the first episode of Cheat, but it wasn’t long before the cabin crew made my bed, dimmed the lights, and I was sleeping. Waking in just enough time to have a cup of tea and freshen up before landing. All in all, a five-star service and a luxurious way to travel. How can I ever turn right again?

Welcome to Miami… The Eden Roc Miami Beach If you are going to be in Miami for just two nights, then British Airways First Class is the way to go. The nine and a half hour flight from London Heathrow flies by once you settle down with a glass (or two!) of Champagne. After a short transfer, I arrived at the Eden Roc Miami Beach hotel. The Eden Roc is in the heart of the city, at the edge of the sea. My spacious room included an oversized balcony overlooking the ocean, and Nobu Hotel was to the left. I didn’t realise until the morning, but I was right across the road from a myriad of yachts and Millionaires Row. Junior suite oceanfront view

King Street Townhouse – a baby grand hotel, rich in history –
We’ve visited the stylish King Street Tavern bar and restaurant many times, but on this particular trip to Manchester’s small adaptation of a grand hotel, we were treated to an overnight stay, plus all the luxury add-ons they had to offer.
By Emily Fitzgibbons
Located within the upper King Street Conservation Area, King Street Townhouse is an impressive Italian renaissance building, designed by architect Edward Salomons and originally built in 1872. After being welcomed in from the rain (it’s summer in Manchester – standard!) by a charming doorman and a receptionist who could not have been friendlier, we were shown to our Luxe Junior Suite, located on the 2nd floor. The space is luxurious yet still manages to stay warm and inviting – a home away from home. The suite is tastefully decorated and boasts a spacious open-plan bedroom with intimate lounge area filled with elegant furnishings, books, flat screen TV and bespoke furniture. We sipped on our welcome drinks (chilled glasses of the Champagne cocktail Kir
Royale) and nibbled on our welcome confectionary platter (brownies, lemon macaroons, blackberries and buttercream) as we admired the super king bed with double pocket sprung mattress and luxury goose down pillows (like sleeping on a cloud, by the way), freestanding bath and flat screen LED TV with Sky box, including Sky Sports. The bathroom, beautifully painted in duck egg blue and with mosaic floor tiles, is home to double sinks and a glorious walk-in rain shower. After relaxing in the mini living room, we headed down to the on-site King Street Tavern for a spot of dinner. We enjoyed starters of asparagus with (perfectly) poached eggs and, luckily, we managed to bag the last serving of delicious goat’s cheese, sweet potato and chilli jam tart. For mains, we tucked in to a bowl of juicy king prawn tagliatelle with chilli and tomatoes, and their signature King Street Beef Burger – a yummy tower consisting of two beef patties, onion, lettuce, tomatoes, burger sauce, cheese and fries.
The Tavern’s central location is ideal for hitting the town for after dinner drinks – the hotel is just down the road from Lily’s Bar and in proximity of the centre’s nightlife. The Gym Infinity Spa Pool, steam room and relaxation area open at 7am, meaning we could delight in a morning steam and dip in the breath-taking rooftop pool, which overlooks the magnificent clock tower and spires of Manchester Town Hall, before heading back down to the room to enjoy a continental breakfast in bed prior to check out. The night staff Brad and Nick were exceptionally helpful with a situation that arose, and Guest Relations Manager Tom was also brilliant – just another example of the great service at King Street Townhouse. We’re not at all surprised it was the TripAdvisor Top 25 Travellers’ Choice Award Winner 2017, or that it featured on Condé Nast’s Hot List 2016 Best Hotels in The World. King Street Townhouse oozes luxury and high class without a pretentious atmosphere – the only problem was that we couldn’t stay longer!

Jill Nash reports from Le Riad, an exclusive Moroccan retreat close to the centre of Marrakech Stay A less than four-hour flight from the UK will land you in this exotic North African destination. Marrakech is culturally far enough to feel you have landed somewhere far flung, but close enough to dip your toe in for a long weekend, or longer if you can manage the time. There’s a myriad of accommodation options for a variety of budgets and tastes, September/October being the optimum time to visit after the summer heat and the crowds have subsided.

Le Riad accommodation is more than just a room. The delightful interconnecting terrace suites make it feel like a private villa, with tremendous sun terraces where you can opt for sundown cocktails and a tray of dates.
Staying in Le Riad you can benefit from private poolside service, and they host a private BBQ lunch once a week and an evening dinner of authentic Moroccan dishes. Each evening, there is a raft of canapés from 6pm, accompanied by cocktails and champagne and preparing you for dinner in one of the restaurants.
A few steps away from Le Riad is the Cinq Mondes spa, designed like a Moorish villa, with an ornate water feature and sun loungers scattered around a tranquil, luscious pond. There is a truly authentic marble Turkish bath, where you can opt for a scrub down to cleanse the skin – a memorable experience. Drink + Dine Being an all-inclusive property, guests can enjoy eating and drinking literally all day since breakfast, lunch and evening meal are included in the price. As the sun sets, the chef wheels out trays of afternoon tea treats, which are almost an entire meal in themselves. Room service is complimentary should you decide to have an early night and watch a film, and you can still take advantage of the free beers and snacks.
Each day there are varied themes, gourmet barbeques (serving lobster to your heart’s content), so there is always a wonderful variety for everyone. Guests mainly eat in the international dining room at La Palmeraie, which is a buffet-style affair, where you can help yourself to the salad bar, pizzas and sumptuous local delicacies. The Moroccan-themed night is probably one of the best evenings, where they bring the local bazaar from Marrakech to the resort; you can pick up a pair of leather slippers and enjoy taking a photo with one of the resident camels. Evening entertainment is what Club Med does best and each evening, there is a host of different shows from We Will Rock You (rock ballad classics) to the trapeze spectacular stunt show or the mesmerising snake charmers and Moroccan dancers. You won’t be bored, that’s for sure. Enjoying Moroccan hospitality and specialities at the El Kebir restaurant is an absolute must. Choose from a variety of tagines and couscous dishes and be served at your table in a cosy dining room with a roaring fireplace. El Kebir is included in the price, but a table must be booked in advance. There are several places you can stop for a drink that are included in the price. The cheerfully stylish Le Pacha is ideal for afternoon tea or drinks before dinner, and its poolside bar perfect for a relaxing aperitif after a day of swimming. The bar du Riad is exclusive for residents at Le Riad, warmly and elegantly decorated, secluded and providing an intimate ambience by day. In the evening, the piano is playing, and the fires are lit as it can sometimes get chilly in the evenings in Marrakech. Finally, the adult-only Zen Zone is the place to be if you don’t have the children – grab a drink by the quiet pool and head for a snooze on a sun lounger. Explore There is plenty within the resort to keep you busy for a few days; challenge your friends at the driving range, practice your drop shots on the clay tennis courts or
reach for the stars swinging on the flying trapeze – all with expert tuition and included within the price. Outside the resort, discovering the souks of Marrakech is undoubtedly one of the highlights for any first-time visitor. The resort offers a free shuttle to the main square several times per day; alternatively, you can easily grab a taxi. Wandering through Jemaa el-Fna is a treat for the senses; indulge in freshly squeezed orange juice and dates and inhale the fresh scents of mint tea and spices on offer in the markets. Haggle to your heart’s content for leather goods, sparkling jewellery and sequined kaftans. At night, the souks come alive with entertainment, including snake charmers, fire-eaters and music – it’s simply not to be missed. For something more tranquil, head over to the three acres of botanical gardens and artists’ landscape known as the ‘Jardin Majorelle’, which was created by French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle. This is one of the most visited sites in Morocco and a spectacular work of artistry, and you can explore the space with a horse-drawn carriage, which makes the trip even more special. A day spent on a 4x4 discovering the Atlas Mountains is a thrilling experience, you can organise this directly from Le Riad and take a day to enjoy the vast, impressive scenery and meet with the Berber population before enjoying a mint tea and Moroccan lunch. For something more low key, and if you are tight on time and/or have children, take a camel ride for a morning. The resort boasts resident camels and expert guides, so you can head out of the resort in their company and are guaranteed lots of fun. Whatever you are looking for – a short blast of autumn sunshine or a thrill-seeking weekend away – Marrakech has all the right ingredients for an unforgettable trip. Le Riad is affordable for families looking for that special getaway without breaking the bank.
To Book: For a family room (occupancy four: two adults, 8-year-old child and four-year-old child), prices start from £3,000 (seven-night stay, November and December 2019, Saturday or Sunday departure). Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road The Laureate serves up international flavours for worldly diners
38
One of the city’s newest restaurants is bringing a fresh approach to international cuisine with a menu that celebrates our fabulous city. Situated within the Crowne Plaza Manchester - Oxford Road at Manchester University on Booth Street West.
Under the guidance of Executive Chef Nathaniel Farrell and his ten-strong team, the stylish hotel-restaurant’s à la carte menu will be updated seasonally to combine European classics and locally sourced ingredients with Asia-Pacific flavours.
The latest addition to Manchester’s vibrant dining scene, The Laureate, has been influenced by its diverse population and the world-leading educational institutions on its doorstep and to which its name pays tribute.
Delicious signature dishes we tried include; soy and ginger grilled beef bavette, seafood laksa with egg noodles, coriander, lime, coconut, lamb rump with aubergine caponata, smoked Burrata with heirloom tomatoes, cornfed chicken and tuna loin. These sit alongside Asian-inspired twists on modern classics, such as

Australian grass-fed ribeye steak and Korean BBQ shell on prawns; menu favourites since the restaurant opened in September. The 120-cover restaurant, set on the ground floor of the new Crowne Plaza also boasts an open kitchen with brick oven and a dedicated pizza chef. The dough is made daily and topped with San Marzano tomatoes and Fior Di Latte cheese, ensuring the artisan flatbread pizzas are fast becoming established as some of the finest in Manchester. Nathaniel, who has run successful kitchens for 21 years, including four years spent as a chef in Copenhagen, said: “Tapping into the growing interest amongst restaurantgoers for inspired flavour combinations, we designed our new fusion menu as a celebration of the diversity that is very much a part of the city’s DNA.
“The volume of positive feedback from our diners so far suggests there is an appetite for our distinctive take on familiar dishes, combined with the theatre of an open kitchen experience.” With its curved leather banquettes, floorto-ceiling windows and rich colour palette, The Laureate is one of the latest attractions to open in The Lume – a 19storey, dual-branded hotel development along the bustling Oxford Road corridor, and just a short walk from the city centre. The hotel itself boasts 12 floors with 212 superb guest rooms, a vibrant bar (The Graduate), fully-equipped, 24-hour gym and club lounge. My day at the barre… Beverley Uddin-Khandakar samples a Barrecore class in Hale and walks away with a brand-new summer goal in hand Nestled in the heart of leafy Alderley Edge, Hale, and with a weekly residency inside lululemon Manchester, Barrecore is an intimate boutique fitness space that offers workouts using a combination of ballet, yoga and Pilates.
• • • • • • • • •
But don't be fooled by its pretty and feminine aesthetic. This is a serious workout, and I was about to feel the burn like never before! On entering the studio, I was welcomed by a smiley girl behind the desk, who already knew my name and that it was my first time. She happily gave me an overview of the 'Signature' class I was about to participate in and showed me around the studio. The smell of scented candles was a nice touch as we made our way up to the cosy changing room and I noticed the selection of Cowshed toiletries and fluffy white towels available for use. I was then introduced to our instructor for the day, who was interested to know if I had any injuries, talking me through the Barrecore method and explaining why this is known as intelligent exercise that offers a full body workout every time. I took my place at the barre, fully prepared to channel my inner Darcey Bussell for the next 55 minutes. However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there was no pirouetting required. This is not a dance class. We began with a warm-up designed to get the heart rate up, then gradually worked the whole body – from arms, thighs and seat to abs – using a combination of isometric and eccentric movements and contractions. Creating a shake and burn in the muscles and, in the words of the instructor, create long, lean lines like the body of a dancer. Finishing with a lovely Shavassana (a minute of relaxation) and a proper stretch sequence, I felt great – proud of myself for getting through it and thinking about when I could come again! As the other ladies in class assured me, 'Barrecore is addictive!' The aftercare was there too, the instructor immediately coming over to see how I found the class and have a little chat. Upon leaving, I was given more information about the schedule and new client offers available at reception. I signed up there and then, receiving 15% off my purchase, and left with a sense of achievement and fresh goals in my mind to have the body of a supermodel by summer! The Barrecore method explained Barrecore is intelligent exercise, integrating the fat-burning format of interval training, to exhaust each major muscle group, with static stretches, which lengthen your muscles and offer relief. This combination of exercises effectively, efficiently and safely reshapes the entire body, creating the highly coveted ‘barre body’. Attend a class a few times per week and you will notice the following physical and mental changes in your body:
Firm, elongated muscles Reduced body fat Increased muscle definition A strong, flat abdomen A toned physique Lifted seat Increased strength & endurance Improved body alignment An increase in energy & sense of wellbeing Greater flexibility Spatial awareness & increased proprioception Improved mind & body awareness Better coordination
How it works Barrecore classes involve performing high repetitions of small isometric movements and contractions, each focusing on major muscle groups – thighs, glutes and abdominals – for the ultimate fat burning workout. If you attend class at least three times a week, you'll quickly begin to notice your legs getting increasingly toned and jeans fitting looser at the waist, thighs and seat. Those that come to class four times a week will notice that these changes happen even faster. So, remember, the longer you stay low in your thigh sets, and push through that burn and shake, the more calories you will burn and the more fat you will lose! HEALTH AND WELLBEING: HOW TO COMBAT WORKPLACE BURN-OUT Poor mental health is the most common reason for Britons taking time off work, costing businesses an estimated £10.6 billion in sickness absence and £21.2 billion in reduced productivity per year, according to NHS data. Despite 93% of employers considering workplace wellbeing an important business need, more than a third of companies don’t meet basic standards when it comes to supporting their staff with mental health, according to a recent survey from Health@Work. Burn-out in the workplace has become such a serious health issue in the modern age, it's now officially recognised as a chronic condition by the World Health Organisation (WHO). They describe it as 'chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed', along with three defining symptoms: • • •
Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion Increased mental distance from one's job or feelings of negativism, or cynicism related to one's job Reduced professional efficacy
PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT A large study of nearly 9,000 employed adults found that workplace burn-out was a significant risk factor for coronary heart disease.
antidepressant medications, hospitalisation for mental disorders and psychological ill-health symptoms. Dr Joanna Longstaffe, GP from The Independent General Practice who offer genetic wellbeing tests to their patients, said: "When it comes to being proactive about your health and the health of your workforce, information is powerful. We are told we should 'know our numbers' for cholesterol and blood pressure and we are encouraged to attend screening programmes for breast and bowel cancer – or to be vigilant for changes in our body and symptoms which may indicate a cause for concern. Additionally, finding out about our genome – or our hereditary risk of disease – informs us what hand of genetic cards we have been dealt. We can then decide how we play that hand, by prioritising or increasing our screening, adjusting riskier lifestyles habits and even preventative measures like surgery." WHAT CAUSES BURN-OUT Key factors leading to burn-out have been identified as office politics, menial working tasks that interfere with work duties, and high job demands that lead to exhaustion. Rising workloads and long hours are the main culprits; however, some employees are better able to cope or are more adaptable than others. Individual personality types also play a role in the risk of burn-out.
Meanwhile, other studies have found similar patterns for high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, hospitalisation due to a cardiovascular disorder, musculoskeletal pain, prolonged fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, severe injuries and even mortality before age 45. Those are just the physical effects. The psychological effects from burn-out include insomnia, depression, use of

Manchester Camerata Redefining the lives of people living with dementia There are currently over 21,000 people living with dementia in Greater Manchester, with a surprising percentage diagnosed before the age of 65
individual can be so much bigger – frustration, anxiety, loss of choice, personal dignity and empowerment, and reduced quality of life.
We meet the Manchester-based orchestra who, using a unique approach to musicmaking, are helping to improve quality of life for people with dementia and whose world-leading methods are being rolled out across the globe.
Music in Mind – the ground-breaking music-making programme Manchester Camerata launched in 2012 – takes place in care homes, housing schemes, day care centres and community settings and runs across 15 weeks.
A history of ground-breaking work When it comes to turning musical convention and the concept of ‘orchestra’ on its head, Manchester Camerata have form. They’ve opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and played alongside dance DJs to deliver Haçienda Classiçal; little wonder The Times has called them “probably Britain’s most adventurous orchestra”. Risks are taken, expectations shattered, and all vestiges of elitism or untouchability unanimously erased.
Small groups comprising people living with dementia (and sometimes their partners/relatives), their carers, a music therapist and a Camerata musician come together to improvise, with the entire session being led by the people with dementia and supported by the musicians:
“Innovation is in our DNA,” says Paul Davies, Manchester Camerata’s Head of Communications and Development. “It’s about reassessing the role of an orchestra; seeing the possibilities and opportunities and making a difference.” This social change ethos is reflected most clearly (and poignantly) in their Camerata in the Community programme, which encompasses their dementia-related work. Music in Mind Memory loss is most commonly associated with dementia, but the impact on an

“It’s not structured in any way, it’s totally improvised,” explains Paul. “Our musicians are experts in listening, gauging what’s happening in a room and taking the lead from the participants. The person living with dementia will decide what instrument they want to play, and our musicians will support them. Everyone in the room is equal and has influence. A musical, wordless conversation ensues; a transformative experience that exists in the moment. Living with dementia can be isolating, but these sessions are life affirming.” Research confirms astonishing impact In 2015, a piece of research focussed on the orchestra’s improvisational model was started by Dr Robyn Dowlen. Robyn’s ESRC-funded joint PhD studentship with the University of Manchester evaluated the impact of the sessions and the recently published results created a new discourse, which focuses on the creativity and musical identity of people living with dementia. Previous evaluation of Music in Mind by HKD Research has confirmed positive impacts in participants’ social, emotional, communication and musical skills. For one care home, by week four, 90% of
participants’ moods had improved and there was an increase in their social, communication and musical skills. By week seven, this increase was evident in almost everyone taking part. The effect is cumulative, the more sessions attended, the greater the benefits. And it wasn’t just people living with dementia who benefitted; family members were now able to communicate with their loved one through music, and carers felt more confident in making connections. “The change in everyone is profound,” continues Paul, “and, when the programme ends, we always leave the carers with instruments and the necessary skills, so that they can continue this legacy.” Raising awareness of young onset dementia Many people connect dementia to older generations, but, nationally, there are in excess of 40,000 people aged under 65 living with it. Awareness is low, as Paul explains: “Post-diagnostic support services in the community for younger people are nothing like they are for older people. That’s why we’ve started running sessions with them, similar to Music in Mind but based around structured composition – a chance to write lyrics and instrumental music that express people’s emotions – both positive and negative. Again, they are the composers, artists in their own right.” Additionally, the orchestra have just completed a Greater Manchester tour of Dementia Voices – a piece of music theatre written by Mancunian playwright and poet Louise Wallwein, which centres on the lives of two people with young onset dementia and their family members. The piece answers the question ‘what is it like to live with young onset dementia?’ and is interspersed with Camerata music. “Yes, the piece expressed the darkness and difficulties,” reflects Paul, “but Louise also showed that there can be times of happiness and joy, which is where music comes in.”
Global upscaling Manchester Camerata – a registered charity – currently deliver projects for people living with dementia across five Greater Manchester boroughs. The goal is not only to expand the work across the region, but for the orchestra to become a global thought leader in health and wellbeing work in the arts by 2022.

The journey toward this status is well underway; a British Council-led relationship with Japan has been established, Music in Mind ‘best practice’ sessions have already taken place in Tokyo, Osaka and, most recently, in Taipei, Taiwan.
“We are advocating and influencing this on a national level,” says Paul. “These activities are primary care not secondary. For example, currently, only 5% of care homes in the UK benefit from musicmaking, yet its power is infinite. The activities are out there, people just need to be connected to them.” Seeing is believing “There is currently no cure for dementia,” Paul concludes, “but people can be supported to live positive, creative lives and music is fundamental to that, but our quality work requires funding.
Our ambition is to upscale this vital programme across Greater Manchester, so more people benefit. We have already secured a third of our fundraising target to make this happen. I invite people to pledge some time to get in touch, so I can explain more about what we do and, ideally, arrange to experience a Music in Mind session first-hand. Seeing is believing.”
Contact Paul: pdavies@manchestercamerata.com Find out more: cameratacommunity.co.uk
“Japan and Taiwan have an ageing population,” says Paul, “but little participatory music provision for older people. We went over there to open orchestras’ minds to the possibilities, and more visits to other countries are in the pipeline.” A nationwide shift Paul explains how their programme is part of a bigger nationwide shift towards ‘social prescribing’, whereby healthcare professionals, rather than medicate, prescribe social wellbeing pursuits, including arts activities. The orchestra, which already works in local primary schools, using music to encourage social development, recently started working with Maggie’s Centre – exploring music therapy for people living with cancer.

Tomorrow People Cardiovascular screening that could save your life Cardiovascular disease (CVD), conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels, affects around seven million people in the UK and is responsible for 38% of male and 37% female premature deaths i.e. before the age of 75. CVD includes all heart and circulatory diseases, including coronary heart disease, angina, heart attack, congenital heart disease, hypertension, stroke and vascular dementia. It is one of the main causes of death and disability in the UK, however, it can often largely be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle. At Tomorrow Cardiovascular Screening, exclusively based at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP), they offer the UK’s most comprehensive and in-depth cardiovascular assessment, which detects risk factors, and the earliest signs of CVD, that other screenings might miss. And as we all know, as with any disease, early detection really can save your life! I thought I’d find out for myself how the screening works, who it can help and what I could expect.

Exertion test – This was where the hard work really started! You are required to a complete a maximum exertion test called a Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test (or CPET). This helps Mr Haque understand how well your cardiovascular system and lungs are working. It includes an exercise ECG, which detects any abnormalities of the heart.
•
Expert consultation – Dr Adam Haque, MBChB, MRCS, PGCert is a vascular surgeon with a special interest in exercise and fitness technologies for vascular patients. He has specific expertise in how fitness influences cardiovascular risk and has become accomplished in cardiopulmonary exercise testing, recognising its potential as a key adjunct to improving health for the general population as a whole. Dr Haque guided me through my results and discussed an action plan. There was plenty of time for me to ask him for advice around increasing my fitness regime and improving my diet.
My cardiovascular assessment:
By Salim Uddin-Khandakar
•
Pre-screening questionnaire – I was asked to answer a series of questions to help the doctor understand my lifestyle and relevant medical history. This was also an opportunity to discuss any concerns you might have. As an ex-smoker and not a great gym lover, I must admit, I was feeling a little anxious.
•
Blood analysis – I had a blood test, which was then analysed for any signs of cardiovascular disease and factors that could have an impact on your cardiovascular health. They look at more than 30 biomarkers, including a full cholesterol profile and blood count.
•
Vascular imaging – Using advanced ultrasound technology, the specialist then examined my key blood vessels for the earliest signs of peripheral arterial disease. This can include narrowing blood vessels, weakened arteries or blockages.
Surprisingly, the results were much better than I had anticipated, apart from slightly raised cholesterol, but for my age, I wasn’t in too bad a shape. The advice to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly (to maintain good mental and physical health has been heeded and I am now into week nine of Couch to 5K.

From crutches to Triathlon thanks to studying at the College of Naturopathic Medicine
Angela MacRitchie, CNM graduate in naturopathic nutrition, herbal medicine and naturopathy From the age of seven, I loved doing ballet and gymnastics and represented my county in gymnastics. But at the age of nineteen, my knee swelled up to a huge size and no-one was sure why. It was incredibly painful and I could only walk with crutches. Over the next twenty years, I had six operations, from investigating ‘foreign bodies’ to moving the knee cap. My knee was painful, often excruciatingly so, and left me bed-ridden for whole days. I was on heavy painkillers, which became less effective the longer I took them. After the sixth operation, which did not bring relief, the consultant said: “No more operations, I’m referring you to the rheumatology clinic.” The rheumatologist gave me hope for the first time in years. I was prescribed a cocktail of powerful anti-inflammatory drugs, which, for the first three months, left me feeling very unwell. I was persuaded to persist with them and after the three months, the change in my knee was noticeable. The swelling went down dramatically for the first time and soon afterwards, I was able to dispense with the crutches. The drugs had worked and I was able to walk further than I had done in years.
But my body increasingly started waking up and responding again. Two years later, at the age of 46, I successfully completed my first triathlon. Two years after going on the antiinflammatory drugs, which I was told I was likely to have to take for life, I went on holiday and realised I had left them all at home by mistake. The fact that neither my mobility nor my pain levels changed without drugs during that short period encouraged me to consider reducing the medication and investigate other natural methods, which I began to do. The pain didn’t worsen, and I could still get about, so I didn’t take any more drugs. At my next check-up, the rheumatologist explained that it was extremely unhelpful to reduce the drugs so quickly and below a certain level. I understood, and it’s definitely not something I would ever advise anyone else to do. No responsible practitioner would do so; stopping medication can have dangerous repercussions. When I told the rheumatologist that I was detoxing, which herbs I was taking and what other changes I was making to my lifestyle and diet, he was unimpressed. I told him that I had challenged myself to do a triathlon in two years’ time, to which he replied, “no chance.”
I’m now 50. It’s been six years since I’ve taken any medication. My knee is fine. I’m pain-free and have not enjoyed such mobility since I was a teenager. The only reason I haven’t done more triathlons is because I’ve completed my studies for three diplomas at CNM – nutrition, naturopathy and herbal medicine. I learnt amazing facts at CNM, which really helped my health. It turned out my blood had no rheumatoid factor markers, so rheumatoid arthritis was never the problem. It was tough studying for three diplomas and working full-time, but everyone at CNM helped me. I now have three clinics offering my clients complete wellbeing packages. As a naturopath, I know the importance of giving the body what it needs for healing and returning to balance, and inspiring people to make positive change in their lives. I don’t have the words to express how much studying at CNM has changed my life.

STYLE I’m in the doghouse. Deservedly so. By Catherine Saunders. Read more at www.ladymuck.style It’s our wedding anniversary this month, so last night, a beaming Lord Muck stunned me with a surprise holiday to Kefalonia to celebrate over 20 years of wedded bliss, leaving in three days. Unfortunately, the first words out of my mouth were: “But what about my hostas?”. As you can imagine, not quite the appreciative reaction his Lordship was expecting. Off he stomped to his man-cave and judging by the Nirvana decibels blaring out, he isn’t calming down anytime soon. I really am an ungrateful wretch of a wife, but in my defence, it’s all my garden’s fault. Holidays are supposed to be really relaxing, right? A time to unwind, soak up the sun and drink cocktails on the beach? Sadly, not if you are a gardener with trust issues. I used to love going on holiday. As a child, building sandcastles and mucking about in the sea with my dad. Then, as a teenager, sneaking away from said dad to guzzle cheap cider with the cute French boys on the campsite. Then, as a twenty

something, mucking about with unrelated males in the sea on drunken girls’ trips to Faliraki and Malia. Best not to delve too deeply into those memories. Then on to my thirties, loved up in Zakynthos and mucking about in the sea with my soonto-be hubby. Bliss. But now, with a large garden and kitchen plot to tend, the prospect of a last-minute holiday has sent my blood pressure rocketing and my anxiety levels sky high. Even though Lord Muck has arranged for our neighbour to keep an eye on things, I can’t stop worrying about slimy slugs devouring everything I’ve worked so hard to grow whilst we are away. As I said, major trust issues. As far as protecting plants from slugs, I’ve tried the lot: garlic spray, coffee grounds, copper tape, crushed eggshells – with varying degrees of success. But I really don’t like spreading slug pellets randomly around my garden for fear of poisoning my friendly frogs and visiting hedgehogs, not to mention the cute kitten that lives
next door. So, whilst his Lordship was sulking, imagine my joy at discovering stocks of Nemaslug at gardeningnaturally.com (£11.99) and the ingenious Slug Bell at seedsofitaly.com (£10.99). I’ve used Nemaslug, or slug nematodes, for many years; they are extremely effective, especially if you are trying to protect fruit and vegetable plants. The Slug Bell is really neat too. You pop slug pellets in the elevated basket provided, insert the basket’s metal spike into the ground and place the hand-painted bell over it to protect it from the elements and keep the pellets well away from wildlife. The yeast in the pellets attracts slugs to the bell so they feast on them rather than your precious hostas and tasty veggies. Result. Now all I have to do is find out if they offer next-day delivery. Right, must dash. Time for some serious grovelling before Lord Muck cancels Kefalonia completely…

“We are overseas but had a house in Didsbury we were renting out. We contacted Susie at Cheshire Home Staging, as we wanted to sell it but it needed improvements. The tenants moved out and Susie and her team got to work. The property was re-listed with a higher asking price and within the first two weeks, there were numerous viewings and TWO offers on the table! Thank you, Susie for all you have done. Highly recommend!” Mathew – Didsbury

CARLUCCIO’S

CLOUD 23
Manchester
Wilmslow
Manchester
We visited the upmarket Italian franchise, located in the heart of Spinningfields, Manchester’s popular drinking and dining destination, for brunch. The restaurant overlooks the gloriously green open spaces of Hardman Square and is the perfect people-watching spot to enjoy any meal of the day.
On a sunny Monday afternoon, the three-storey independent cafe and wine bar, situated on Wilmslow’s bustling Water Lane, is packed to the rafters both inside and out with diners looking to enjoy a spot of lunch. We sat down sipping two halves of lager (deliciously crisp and from a brewery in nearby Buxton) as knowledgeable George talked us through the menu. Smoke’s philosophy is simple – why go far for produce when you can source great ingredients on your doorstep? In fact, they use a variety of local produce from The Cheshire Smokehouse. The most favourable menu choice is their ‘build-a-brunch’ option (so popular that the restaurant has recently created a new ‘build-a-salad’ menu), which is available from Monday to Friday – a hit with diners, especially during the warmer months.
Cloud 23, found up high in one of Manchester’s most iconic buildings, Beetham Tower, has started serving brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Diners can indulge in Danish delights, pretty puffed pastries and berry buttermilk pancakes, or go healthier with granola, nuts and yogurt, a continental brekkie or eggs. There’s even a Green Power smoothie on offer for those who are really looking to have a fresh start to their weekend.
We chose two plates of eggs royale – a toasted English muffin topped with two perfectly poached eggs (not too runny, not too hard – a skill within itself), fresh smoked salmon, wilted spinach and creamy hollandaise sauce. We washed it down with pots of tea from the extensive hot drinks list and glasses of crisp, cloudy apple juice, complete with an apple slice to garnish.
Carluccio’s central location makes it a great place to stop and eat whether you’re on a working lunch break or shopping the day away in Manchester’s city centre.
We built our own brunches – one with sourdough toast, thick chilli flake smashed avocado, two poached eggs, cherry tomatoes, Cheshire smoked salmon and homemade ‘posh’ beans (a mixture of different beans and a secret sauce created from cherry tomatoes), the other, again on toast and with avocado and poached eggs, but this time with accompaniments of Smokehouse streaky bacon, halloumi, spinach leaves and sautéed mushrooms. They’re hearty portions without the hefty price tag, and with the ability to add as much or as little as you want, you certainly won’t leave hungry! Brunch is served until 2pm on weekdays and 3.30pm on weekends, and if brunch isn’t your thing, Smoke also serve pastries, cakes and a range of open, closed and toasted sandwiches for lunch.

Carluccio’s serves delicious, freshly prepared breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and everything in between. The restaurant was busy for a Friday morning and we settled down with fresh juices and smoothies whilst we browsed the menu – choose the zingy mixed berry smoothie if you’re looking for a refreshing wakeup drink. We had to order a traditional breakfast, which consists of all the usual suspects: Cumberland sausage, mixed mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs (the diner’s choice, we chose fried) and pancetta – salty but traditionally Italian and similar to American bacon. Carluccio’s also has a wide range of vegetarian and gluten-free options, so we decided to try a vegetarian breakfast too, because the courgette fritters swayed us! Much the same as the traditional breakfast (but meatfree, of course), the dish comes with your choice of eggs, mixed mushrooms and tomatoes but with smashed avocado and courgette fritters as bacon and sausage replacements – all topped with crunchy seeds.

We were seated in a prime position overlooking the city skyline and sipped on shots of Prosecco, which were brought to us on a biscuit crumb board whilst we browsed the menu – and with some yummy options to choose from, we have to say it took us a while!
There’s the option to make your brunch bottomless too for just £20, meaning unlimited bloody Marys, Bellinis or gin and tonics – what a weekend treat! Jane Dowler Jane Dowler co-owner of Evuna, has been responsible for importing their boutique wine list for the past 16 years. Her passion lies in the quality of the grape What’s so special about Evuna’s wine? We have been importing from small bodegas since 2003. The difference is the human touch, the tradition and knowledge. My producers have seen from childhood how their grandfather, uncle or father have a deep relationship with the vines that have belonged to the family for generations and this shows in the quality of the wine, and the elegance and the drinkability of them. This is what makes them so great. This is Evuna’s passion. Why Spanish restaurants? My fondest childhood memories are holidaying in different 64

parts of Spain and I am in love with its diversity! I love the way our chef from Santander has a different bravas sauce from our chef from Malaga, and I love discovering new wines from unknown regions. Over the last 15 years, I have personally selected all 6,000 bottles we serve each month, once dominated by the fabulous Tempranillo, our new regions and wineries are building their reputation with varieties such as Mencía, Garnacha, Bobal, Callet, Cariñena, Monastrell, Listán and Prieto Picudo, as well as indigenous French varieties. My aim is to continue to offer the diversity of Spain to our customers.
What’s the hardest thing about running a restaurant? Finding the right staff! I want my team to be passionate about our brand and interested in our customers. Once they are in Evuna, I expect them to be completely customer focused and give the best service they can. Dare I mention BREXIT? Since it all began, its is becoming increasingly difficult to find hospitality professionals, so I have to think outside the box, using Spanish recruitment agencies, and I am also involved in apprenticeship initiatives with Macclesfield college for Chefs.

MENAGERIE
THE BUBBLE ROOM
PATISSERIE VALERIE
Manchester
Bramhall
Manchester
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Manchester’s Menagerie is the place to be. 30 minutes from opening time, it’s already filled with hen parties, baby showers, birthday bashes and girly groups starting the weekend off the right way. We took our seats in the feature booth, filled with foliage, flowers and famous neon sign, one of the most impressive spots in the house.
The Bubble Room has bases in leafy Alderley Edge and exclusive Bramhall Village, meaning you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, cocktails or dinner in two prestigious Cheshire locations. The relaxed vibe makes it a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy food and drinks with friends and family. Plus, they’re dog friendly! The food at The Bubble Room is carefully sourced, local produce, and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. We enjoyed two bubble breakfasts; the Bubble vegetarian breakfast, with tomato, hash brown, baked beans, flat mushroom, choice of eggs (scrambled) and toasted sourdough bread spread with lots of butter. There are also two veggie sausages, which can often be touch and go flavour wise, and we have to say, these (made with actual vegetables) were delicious. We requested to go bean-less, and received an extra hash brown as a replacement. Result!
The famous cake café launched its new menu a few weeks ago, designed with quality ingredients and ethical sourcing in mind. It boasts refined pastry favourites, a lunch-to-dinner menu, and a new brunch menu – all made with their ‘flour to fork’ mantra in mind, so the team know exactly where diner’s dishes come from. The all-day brunch menu at Patisserie Valerie includes the brand-new Madame Valerie’s vegan breakfast, classics such as eggs Benedict/ Florentine/Royale, and healthy options like smashed avocado on freshly baked bloomer toast and Greekstyle yoghurt with granola and fresh fruit – delicious!
Menagerie’s Bottomless Brunch is available every weekend 12noon-5pm. For £40pp, it sounds on the higher end, we know, but wait until you hear what’s included! For two hours, diners can top up on totally unlimited Prosecco, mimosa, Bloody Mary, and Kiki’s Fruit Punch – a delicious bubble-gum cocktail. You also get not one but TWO full-sized breakfast plates to enjoy. We started with the avocado toast topped with tomato, black pepper, poached egg and a delicious drizzle of pesto – a welcome twist on a usual avo-toast dish.
But we couldn’t wait to indulge on the stars of the show. The classics. Five Patisserie Valerie classics: strawberry gateau, baked cheesecake, Mille-Feuille, Black Forest gâteau and double-choc gâteau – made using new refined recipes with higher quality ingredients for a more decadent taste. We also tucked into their raspberry and strawberry tarts and a slice of their brand-new pear and chocolate Torte – similar to a Bakewell tart in flavour, with soft pear pieces and moreish chocolate in between.
After a short break (the unbuttoning of trousers was needed) and some more mimosas, we headed to the Oh Hey Sweetie section of the menu, which consisted of sweet treats, such as buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, and Menagerie French toast – brioche with Nutella and marshmallow fluff. We chose the latter; indulging on surprisingly light brioche dusted with icing sugar and filled with gooey goodness.
The full Bubble breakfast arrives similar to its veggie counterpart, but with crispy smoked bacon, thick sausages and black pudding. There’s the option to build your own breakfast, with a minimum £4 charge, which is perfect for fussy eaters and great for kids. Complement your dish with a selected ‘brunch tipple’ – Bloody Mary, mimosa or Bubble espresso martini – for a real weekend treat. We visited on a Sunday, and the brunch menu is served from 10am (11am on weekdays) and boasts a selection of wraps and sandwiches served from this time too, perfect if you don’t fancy a standard breakfast choice.
A glam way to start the weekend off – great food, divine drinks and an unforgettable atmosphere.
Love live music? Head down on a Sunday night from 8pm to see different artists every week.
The menu has a broad range of plant-based options to fit in with their ethically sourced ethos, and all patisserie items are suitable for vegetarians. They can even be ordered and personalised online – handy! So, whether you’re hungry for breakfast, lunch or a naughty treat, Patisserie Valerie is a sweet place to stop and eat!

Keeping it local at Croma Five years after opening in the former Gourmet Burger site on Wilmslow Road (where has that time gone?), CROMA are now an established favourite in Didsbury village “Our work is still not done,” explains Michael Baker, Director and Managing Partner. “Running a restaurant is a 24/7 commitment, and there is always a need to keep things fresh, add new products and keep guests engaged and interested. We also have a responsibility to actively support community causes and initiatives.” CROMA are currently in their second year of supporting Maggie’s Manchester through donations raised by selling monthly specials. Their current spicy vegetable linguine is flying out. Guests can enjoy new dishes and at the same time directly make a contribution to a very worthwhile cause.
On the food and beverage front, keeping it local is very much on the menu. Having made regular trips to Ice Shack, the very cool all-vegan dessert parlour in Withington, Michael fell in love with what he describes as “the best ice cream I have ever tasted anywhere in the world.” The vegan flavours are so pure and a couple of amazing options, raspberry ripple and salted caramel, now sit in pride of place on the dessert menu. Didsbury Gin, Burton Road Pale Ale and the soon-tobe-listed Citra Pale Ale (produced by the Ragazzi across the street at Casa Italia) all now form part of the beverage range, keeping CROMA and M20 very much in people’s minds when choosing a dining-out experience.

SANGAM BOWDON Out with the old in with the new, Sangam Bowdon opens its doors
One of Bowdon's most popular restaurants is back under a new name but the same trusted owners. An exciting makeover not only of its interior design but also of the menu. The old Swadesh is now Sangam Bowdon. The inspired new look is down to husband and wife team Sultana and Mohammed Salim. We joined them for dinner on a Sunday evening to find out more. "There are so many restaurants now, so we wanted it to be different from the others. People are much more knowledgeable now through social media,” says Sultana. “They want authenticity and the opportunity to try something different. We want people to ask questions.” Sangam is an exclusive Indian restaurant situated in the heart of Bowdon. A slick, contemporary bar area means you can relax with a drink, or even a cocktail, prior
to dining in this exquisite restaurant. As you look around, you immediately realise you are about to experience something quite unique. After a cheeky pina colada and a cold beer, we were taken to our table. We started with mahi banjara – which is Scottish salmon cooked in the tandoor, infused with caraway and served with a fresh salad and a honey and mustard sauce (£7.95). This melt-in-the-mouth tandoori salmon, perfectly cooked in a delightful sauce and the Peshawri lamb chops are a must and a great gauge of any Indian restaurant, and these certainly didn’t disappoint. The latter is tender baby lamb chops marinated in ginger, garlic, yoghurt and vinegar – cooked in the tandoori oven and presented perfectly (£6.95). For mains, we shared the chicken lababdar (£11.95) – a healthier, lower-calorie (but high in flavour) fillet of oven-roasted
chicken breast cooked in Chef Khan’s special lababdar sauce, finished with fresh ginger, green chillies, coriander leaves and fresh cream, and laid on a bed of saffron rice. A personal favourite of mine and full of flavour. The tinda chingri (£15.95) features decent-sized king prawns cooked in a Bengali homely sauce; a fabulous creation finished with lemon juice and fresh coriander – again, it was cooked to perfection. The restaurant’s menu, under the supervision of an award-winning Chef Khan, uses the finest, freshest ingredients and produces a mix of traditional and contemporary fare. Verdict The beauty and charm, diversity and depth, simplicity and complexity of its Indian cuisine make Sangam Bowdon a fabulous addition to the Cheshire dining scene.

Sonya O’Sullivan How Sonya left her life in the sky to help other individuals and businesses fly high Hale-based Sonya O’Sullivan and Stratus Associates’ experienced team of five train corporate and private clients in business and communications skills throughout the UK. Set up by Sonya in 2003, Stratus specialises in improving companies’ public image, honing staff leadership skills and encouraging personal growth – which Sonya also delivers from home. Background Her 20 years in professional training follow experience in retail, banking and aviation. Ultimately, her 1999 career change was prompted by the realisation her 55-hour week as an airline safety instructor, crew manager and mum-of-one was pure overload. Leading South Trafford College’s inaugural NVQ Crew Programme was the turning point. Sonya found her niche as a trainer, gained her City & Guilds 7307 adult teaching certificate and accepted an associate trainer’s post down south – till going it alone as Stratus Associates. Why be a trainer? People person Sonya says, “The special interaction involved in training people and its positive impact on those brave enough to put themselves in the ‘hot seat’ gives me great satisfaction. It’s all about trust. Above all, we trainers must be empathetic and understanding, we must be approachable and aware of others’ sensitivities and must give part of ourselves too. And it’s this two-way process I really enjoy.’’
By Fay Wertheimer
Abroad European corporate work took her to Madrid, The Hague, Budapest, Norway and Switzerland. It was here that Sonya, puzzled by the lack of information for the next day’s session, found out that, unbeknown to her, day two was in Milan at 9am. Stunned, she sorted it and made it with time to spare – though her trainees, in true Italian style, rolled in a good hour late! Small wonder, Sonya now thinks twice about training abroad. Home In complete contrast and at the request of local networkers, this former member of the Professional Speakers Association has recently focussed on private coaching in presentation and public speaking skills. Sonya offers tailor-made guidance on a one-off or in-depth basis. Clients range from inexperienced young professionals to more accomplished speakers keen for a ‘dress rehearsal’, from a novice vicar to an ME sufferer raising awareness of the condition to an audience of hundreds.
She explains, “Some people just want help crafting their presentation. Others are so terrified, they can hardly breathe at the mere prospect of giving a talk in public to friends or business colleagues. Once the mental block or its causes are identified, things can quickly fall into place. For me, whether someone’s had my one-to-one attention or been in a group of anything up to twelve people, success is knowing my training has helped them move to a place of greater confidence and competence in their workplace – and in life.” Over 80 % of Stratus Associates’ work comes via recommendation. If you or anyone you know think their expertise might be of help, just get in touch.

Mike Perls Made in Manchester When we meet Mike Perls, CEO of strategic marketing agency MC2, the news that he’s made the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for an MBE for services to the community of Manchester has just been made public. Much deserved? Absolutely! Surprising? Not at all… This local change-maker’s relentless endeavours to improve the lives of the people of Manchester are an inspiration and his list of pro bono work is impressive. Just a flavour of his current work reads like this: He is Chair of GreaterSport, whose remit is to get the entire Greater Manchester population active; Visiting Professor and board member at Manchester Metropolitan University, inspiring the country’s largest cohort of students from state schools and underprivileged communities; Trustee of the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Charity, helping tackle homelessness; and Board Director of the Rugby League World Cup 2021, an event which will leave a lasting legacy in the city for future generations. In a rare moment of downtime, we take the opportunity to talk to Mike about his early career and inspirations and, of course, the award, and to find out that while he may have been born in Kendal, he was truly made in Manchester… Salutions: You’re a busy man, it’s hard to believe you have a ‘day job’ on top of all your charitable work! Mike: I really enjoy my role at MC2, but it’s intense – you constantly have to be on top of your game to keep up with the talented people that we have surrounded ourselves with in the agency. When I started the business back in 1999, I wanted to create a company that made a real difference to clients’ businesses and employed talented people who loved coming to work. Twenty years later, we are a ‘community of talent’ of more than 50 and one of the largest independents in the sector, dealing with cities and brands across the world. Salutions: You were born in Kendal but now belong to Manchester. What led you here? Mike: My family moved to Hale when I was two. I grew up there and went to Saint Ambrose College in Hale Barns. In 1986, I went to study English at the University of Ulster – right in the middle of the troubles – and after graduating, I secured a sales role at The Observer in London. It was an exciting time to be on Fleet Street. Out of the blue, I received a call asking me to move back to Manchester and head up the launch of the business pages at the Manchester Evening News. Salutions: The right move? Mike: I never, ever expected to move back here, I thought I’d be in London for life, but I arrived back and moved into St. John’s Gardens in the city centre. It was a pretty unusual thing to do – at the time, there were only about 200 other people who lived in the centre, but those people, including Tony Wilson, Elliot Rashman, Peter Saville, were doing things. I watched them and thought ‘I can do that’ – I set up MC2 and never looked back.

August/September 2019 | salutions.co.uk
Salutions: You’ve cited Tony Wilson as one of your main inspirations in life? Mike: Yes, absolutely, and he still inspires me to this day. Him and my mum. She landed in Old Trafford as a teenager from Athlone and almost stopped speaking for a year when her accent made it difficult for people to understand her. Despite this less than welcoming introduction to her adopted city, she started training as a nurse at 16 and qualified as a midwife. She spent over 40 years working for the NHS in the end and managed to do a degree and become a health visitor along the way. She would drag me over to Partington to paint people’s kitchens… she basically taught me to care. Salutions: We think she taught you well! Mike: Tony Wilson said,“you can make money, or you can make history”. I wanted to make a difference in the community, helping people and improving their life chances. It can’t be right that somebody born two miles away from where I’m sitting right now, has a life expectancy that’s 15 years less than me, can it? Where you’re born shouldn’t dictate what your life is like. Manchester is a really honest place, but there are too many inequalities. There’s a lot of work to do. Salutions: When you’re not visiting Number 10 or attending high-profile events, how do you like to unwind? Mike: Spending time with my wife, Jenny, and children Conor, Rory, Finn and Tabby. I haven’t drank for about 12 years, it was a dry January that just kept on going. I like to do physical challenges (Mike has completed an Ironman), particularly marathons, including one in the Arctic Circle last year. I’m currently training for the original Athens marathon in November. I also coach mini rugby at Bowdon. Salutions: We hear you have an extended family of pets? Mike: (laughs) I LOVE cats, we have two – Ronnie and Poggy – what can I say, the family are huge Man United fans! But, I’m also a massive dog person, so we have Ruby, a miniature labradoodle, who is so popular around Didsbury! She’s the most gorgeous thing you’ve ever met. We’re really close and I like nothing more than walking with her along the river at Fletcher Moss. Salutions: You now live in Didsbury – what are its best bits? Mike: All of it. I totally love Didsbury. Why is it so fabulous? There’s a really eclectic mix of people living here with everyone doing really interesting stuff. Every conversation is different, it’s great. Salutions: Congratulations on your MBE. We weren’t at all surprised by the news, were you? Mike: On our 16th wedding anniversary in May, my wife handed me an envelope and said she had got me a money-can’t-buy experience. I opened it with a bit of an eyeroll, as I thought it was going to be a parachute jump or a driving day. Needless to say, there were a few tears when I realised what it actually was. But even I wasn’t prepared for the response when it was officially announced in June and my phone went crazy! So many people had supported my nomination, it was overwhelming. When I sat my mum down in Altrincham Market and showed her the letter, I realised where the expression ‘bursting with pride’ came from! My dad and older brother were equally as thrilled. I’m just waiting for confirmation of the date to go down to the palace, my wife has already picked out her dress! Salutions: The award is for ‘services to the community of Manchester’… Mike: You can imagine what that means to me. That was the bit that got me. I am so, so pleased. If this award inspires one person to roll up their sleeves and try to make Manchester even better than it already is, then that’s my job done! August/September 2019 | salutions.co.uk

PAPERWORk… A blessing or a curse?
Love it or hate it, paperwork is a necessity for effective business management. Many a deal is done on a handshake or a casual exchange of emails or text messages. Experience has illustrated the need to have accurate and complete documentation to set out what your business commitments are and, just as importantly, the commitments other businesses have made to you. Why not make a virtue out of a necessity and challenge your organisation to deliver the gold standard when it comes to your documentation? After all, being on top of your documentation gives confidence to others, shows that you know what you’re doing and provides assurance to your customers and stakeholders. But what are the benefits of falling back in love with paperwork for your business? •
•
•
Good governance: Make sure your Articles of Association are accurate and current and legally compliant. Check them regularly to make sure they still reflect how your business operates. Avoid fines and penalties: Make sure you submit annual documents to Companies House, HMRC etc. on time and keep an archive of these over time in case you need to produce them. Help secure new contracts: Make sure you’ve got accurate and up-to-date documentation when you’re tendering for new work – this also creates a reassuring and credible impression.
•
Protect your reputation: There’s never been a greater level of scrutiny into how businesses operate, to ensure that they are ethical and responsible with good governance standards.
It is impossible to anticipate the multitude of risks that might arise in everyday business life. Hopefully, you won’t ever have a serious dispute. However, if you do, it’s so important in litigation to have access to full and clear documentation to help win your case. If taken to extreme, an overly burdensome approach to documenting your dealings with other businesses could see your own business quickly grind to a halt! But taking time, for example, to put a proper contract in place at the start could pay dividends if something goes awry later. Setting out expectations, timescales, costs and ensuring everyone knows what they have signed up to deliver reduces the likelihood of disputes arising down the line. If a dispute does arise, having a contract could help to resolve it more quickly.
•
What will happen if either party doesn’t honour its side of the bargain, for example, part of the products or services aren’t delivered by an agreed due date or there is some fault or error with it; and
•
What will happen if either party wants to end the contract and when and how that will happen.
If there is a particular requirement you want to be able to enforce, you need to make sure it is clearly set out and agreed to. It can seem like overkill, but in all likelihood, having a clear, simple contract agreed up front and keeping well-organised records will protect both you and your business. Hopefully, you won’t need to take any legal action, but because you’ve now come to love your paperwork, if you do find yourself in a dispute, you’ll have all the relevant documentation to hand to prove your position.
By all means keep it simple, but here are our recommendations of the key points you need to make sure you include: •

Fahad G. Attar
Nicola Wilburn-Shaw
Club Manager of Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club, Mike Saxon, has 30 years of experience in the golfing industry and is an expert in managing events at the club.
Fahad G. Attar is an Orthopaedic Consultant specialising in sports surgery, joint replacement and regenerative ortho-biological joint preserving therapies. He is particularly experienced in using regenerative biological treatments to manage sports injuries and joint pain caused by arthritis.
Nicola Wilburn-Shaw is a Partner at McAlister Family Law. She is highly experienced in high-value and multi-asset financial disputes, particularly those surrounding undisclosed income or assets, and is known as “the one who always finds the money”.
Why is Dunham consistently voted in the top few golf clubs in the North West? Our tree-lined, 18-hole championship course is beautiful, challenging and built on sand, making it an excellent year-round course. We welcome men, ladies, juniors and beginners and have several membership options to suit. The Clubhouse has recently undergone a £250k refurbishment and boasts a bar and restaurants that serve truly exceptional cuisine.
What conditions can be treated with regenerative therapies and why is it being used? We treat all sports injuries, pain caused by tendinitis as well as joint pain and stiffness due to arthritis affecting any joint. The advantages of using regenerative therapies is that they can relieve pain and delay or avoid need for surgery and are hence a minimally invasive option.
I am in the process of getting divorced. My ex-spouse has produced fake legal documents, claiming they were signed years ago. What can I do? There are numerous ways of verifying the legitimacy of any documents presented within court proceedings. For example, forensic experts can examine an original document to determine the age of ink presented, so as to establish when was signed. Handwriting experts can be instructed to verify the legitimacy of a signature. You can request the metadata of an electronically created document, which will show the date the document was created and any subsequent changes made.
Mike Saxon
How has the refurbishment benefitted the club? Due to recent demand for weddings and events at the club, we decided to invest in modernisation and accessibility that would benefit visitors and members alike. This has included installing a lift for access to our rooftop restaurant, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the lounge and restaurant – giving a beautiful backdrop and uninhibited views of our grounds. Can I hold my event at Dunham? We host all sorts of private events, including weddings, celebrations and funeral wakes, as well as corporate events, such as conferences and seminars. Our Tee-2Green Golf Academy has a state-of-the-art indoor golf simulator, which offers great team building events, and for members and visitors, our golf professional provides regular lessons and tuition.
What do you routinely use for biological therapies? PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is used most frequently. This is a simple procedure where blood is taken from you in clinic, like giving blood or a blood test. The healing factors are extracted from the blood, concentrated and injected into the problematic area. We also routinely use bone marrow and fat cells that have very good regenerative and healing potential. What are the results and risks involved for these procedures? The results have shown that these therapies can reduce joint inflammation, swelling and pain and also improve function and can last up to two to three years. The risks are minimal as its your own blood and cells that are used for the injection, hence eliminating the possibility of rejection.
My spouse has walked out, leaving me and my children with no income. My spouse is in full-time paid employment. What can I do? First, speak to the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) and arrange for an urgent assessment. Seek the advice of a solicitor, who should discuss with you the possibility of making an urgent application for maintenance and about your legal fees being met by your spouse if you do not qualify for funding. You may be entitled to government help with benefits; speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau or your solicitor about this.

Mr Andrew pickersgill
Suzanne Batista
Mr Gaurav Batra has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Oaklands Hospital, Salford since 2009, specialising in hip, knee and sports problems. As well as completing his training in orthopaedic surgery, he has also completed exams in sports and exercise medicine.
Mr Andrew Pickersgill is a Consultant Gynaecologist at Spire Manchester Hospital, Didsbury and their clinic in Hale.
Suzanne Batista is a home enchantment whose job it is to dress Cheshire homes to really impress and add a much higher value to the house.
What should I do if I have sustained a sporting injury? If symptoms are not improving after a couple of weeks and you can’t resume normal activities, then it may be worthwhile consulting an expert.
Why is my period heavier than usual? Heavy periods are common. About one in 20 women in their 30s and 40s will see their GP about them. Periods can be so heavy that they affect the quality of a woman’s life, preventing working or social activities every month.
What is home staging? If you want to sell your home faster and for a higher value, staging a house will help. Staging gets your property sale-ready and allows buyers to imagine themselves living there. Home staging has become a ‘must-do’ for sellers. Some 77% of agents said home staging makes it easier for prospective buyers to visualise the property as a future home. Staged homes sell faster and for more money than those that are unstaged, according to Suzanne.
My knee has started clicking during exercise. What could be the problem? If this is a new problem, it is possible you may have damaged the joint or meniscus cartilage inside the knee joint. The best way of finding out is by doing an MR scan. How do you decide if someone needs a hip or knee replacement? If it is affecting your quality of life, including sleep and mobility, and simple painkillers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, are not effective, then you may be a candidate for a replacement. My employer is asking how long I will be off work after my knee replacement. Most people will return to work eight to 12 weeks after surgery, as long as you have done the correct rehabilitation exercises to regain range of motion and muscle strength.
What causes heavy periods? In about half of women, it could be fibroids or polyps growing in the womb, or conditions such as endometriosis. Other women are more likely to bleed due to clotting disorders or thyroid gland problems and treating these conditions may help. In the majority of women, there is no obvious cause and bleeding can be due to changes in chemicals that affect the shedding of the lining of the womb. Are there any treatment options for heavy periods? The treatment choices depend on what is causing the bleeding and a woman’s fertility desires. Contraceptive pills and hormonal coils can be useful if no pregnancy is planned. If polyps or fibroids are bigger than 3cm, they may need removing. There are operations that can also help with stopping or reducing heavy periods and they involve destroying the womb lining or removing the womb completely – most can be done with keyhole surgery, some as outpatient procedures. The most appropriate treatment option should be discussed with your GP or consultant gynaecologist.
Surely people will use their imagination and want to put their own stamp on a house? Home buyers are increasingly seeing ‘picture-perfect’ houses and rooms on home decorating shows and in online listings, so making crucial improvements to a house can make a huge difference when selling. Plus, due to rising costs and bigger deposits needed, many buyers are wanting a property that’s ready to move into. What if I just don’t have the time or knowledge to make all the necessary changes? Over a number of years, I have built a very reliable team of trades. I can project manage every detail of a home makeover, including decluttering, choosing wall colours and finishing with an elegant show home look. Can you really afford not to stage?

Have you severed financial ties with your ex? Many people mistakenly believe that a divorce alone breaks all financial claims with their former spouse, but this isn’t the case. A financial order can be made by consent or imposed upon you by the court. You can obtain a financial order in a number of different ways - which route you take will largely depend on how amicable your relationship with your ex spouse is and the level/complexity of matrimonial assets to be divided.
Mediation If relations remain amicable between you and your former spouse, mediation may be the best option. Mediation involves attending joint (or shuttle) sessions with a mediator for assistance. However, for mediation to be successful it needs to be entered into willingly, with both parties prepared to make some compromises. If agreement is reached at mediation, your lawyer will draft a financial order (made by consent) to be lodged with the court for approval.
Financial disclosure The exchange of full and frank financial disclosure
provides both parties with full transparency as to the extent of the matrimonial pot in order for negotiations to begin. If there’s any uncertainty as to the value of assets, such as the family home or pensions, experts may need to be instructed. Once all the relevant information has been gathered, your lawyer will advise you as to what a reasonable settlement might be. This provides a starting point to negotiate with your ex-partner to try to reach an agreement. Once an agreement is reached, your lawyer will draft a financial order (made by consent) to be lodged with the court for approval.
Financial remedy proceedings If mediation or negotiations are unsuccessful, you will need to issue financial remedy proceedings. The court will provide both parties with a strict timetable for the proceedings, which includes a date by which you and your ex-partner must exchange full and frank financial disclosure. There will be a First Directions Appointment (FDA) for the judge to consider if any further information needs to be gathered following the exchange
of financial disclosure. At the second hearing, the Financial Dispute Resolution (FDR), the judge can give an indication as to what they believe a reasonable settlement might be. Both parties are encouraged to reach an agreement at this stage. However, if an agreement is still not possible the court will list a contested Final Hearing. A different judge to the FDR will hear the final hearing and make a final decision, imposing a financial order onto the parties.
Legal Assistance If you’re going through a divorce, or got divorced a number of years ago without getting a financial order, it’s important that you seek legal advice, as your ex-partner may still have a financial claim available against you.

Bowdon prep girls shine in Dr Seuss show
A cast of over 90 girls from Bowdon Prep brought the fantastic world of Dr Seuss to life at the Waterside Arts Centre in Sale in July.
Girls took on the role of characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Amayzing Mayzie and Things One and Two. Backed up by teams of jungle creatures, fish and the monkey gang, they transported over 350 parents and friends of the school from the Jungle of Nool and the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos! Hosting the annual school production at the Waterside Arts Centre allowed the
girls to shine and to share their flair for music and drama with a wide community. It also gave the girls the chance to hone their performance skills in a large state-ofthe-art venue. Director and Head of Music at BPS, Rachel Morrison, commented: “Putting on such an exciting production is a huge challenge but everyone in the school community has worked so hard. It really exemplifies our values of Belief, Perseverance, and then Success!”
Memorial event for former Grange School student brings community together
John Nesbitt, aged 18, had just collected his A-level results and his school, The Grange, had awarded him with Outstanding Academic Achievement for receiving at least three A grades. However, on the 30th August 2018, John tragically and
unexpectedly died in his sleep. John’s heart stopped beating as a result of an arrhythmia, caused by myocarditis. His fellow students, friends and family rallied together and immediately wanted to ensure they remembered John’s life and the positive impact he had on them. Working with teachers at The Grange, this culminated in a memorial event, which took place on Saturday 29th June.
Club in Tarporley. The memorial event provided an opportunity to help raise money and the Just Giving page now stands at over £14,000. John’s parents, Shelia and Derek Nesbitt, said, “John lived in the moment and enjoyed every day. He had a contagious smile and the ability to brighten everyone’s life. This is for John.”
At the Grange’s Pavilion sports fields, staff, current and former students took part in a football match. This was followed by a BBQ and summer games and, come evening, a gala dinner was hosted at the Portal Golf
Lady Barn House School believes that outdoor education opens new horizons
Time spent in the great outdoors encourages children to leave routine behind and find out about themselves, each other and the natural world around them. The school offers activity camps in the Lake District to all pupils from Year 2 and above. Activities include abseiling, bushcraft skills, nature walks, orienteering, canoeing and ghyll scrambling.
Back on school ‘turf’, the addition of a new outdoor multi-sports facility will transform and enhance the sporting provision at Lady Barn House School. As a result, pupils will explore a brand-new PE curriculum and participate in a broad range of sporting disciplines. An enrichment programme has been added to the improved games curriculum, to allow children to experience diverse activities in addition to team sports. The launch of a new sports kit is perfectly timed in a fresh and exciting era of Lady Barn Sport. August/September 2019 | salutions.co.uk

The king’s School has put its best foot forward to send over 300 pairs of shoes to primary schools in Ghana King’s has also sent school furniture, sports kit, a projector and books to set up a library. As its Director of External Relations, Caroline Johnson, who organises the scheme, said: “We are told the project has had a profound impact on absenteeism, literacy rates and even teenage pregnancy, as it enables children to see a brighter future and have higher aspirations.” Caroline added: “It also gives our pupils a deeper appreciation of just how privileged they are to have access not only to an excellent education but also what we think of as basics such as footwear, desks and books.”
Since 2015, King’s youngest pupils have donated their old school shoes at the end of the academic year so their counterparts in Ghana can walk, what is often many miles to and from school, in comfort. Worldwide, there are 300 million children for whom walking with shoes is a rarity. This makes them extremely vulnerable to infection, parasites and injuries to the feet and ankles. Working with the charity Connecting Kids Education Foundation (CKEF), who support schools in rural Ghana and organise shipping and distribution, King’s pupils can then follow the progress of their Ghanaian friends with regular photos and updates.
CKEF was set up by local philanthropist Ellen Blamires, who also comes in to King’s to speak to the pupils about her charity work and offer older students potential gap year opportunities working in central and southern Ghana. Caroline added: “The shoe collection is now an important part of our end-of-year celebrations. As a mum of three, I know how quickly children grow out of their shoes and we are sending highquality school shoes that our pupils have grown out of and would otherwise just be thrown away. It’s a case of waste not want not, which is another vital lesson.”
Stockport Grammar Junior School Head receives Queen’s Honour The Headmaster of Stockport Grammar Junior School (SGJS), Mr Tim Wheeler, has been awarded an MBE for services to charity and to education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. In addition to his work at SGJS, Mr Wheeler has been the Chair of the Little Princess Trust since 2011. The charity provides real-hair wigs for children and young people with hair loss and funds vital research into childhood cancer. In the past decade, Mr Wheeler has run three full and two half marathons to raise funds and awareness of the charity, with the next in Cardiff this coming autumn. Mr Wheeler is also a Trustee of the IAPS charity iTrust, which provides bursaries to support children who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend independent schools and helps teachers in hardship. Mr Wheeler said: “The letter informing me that I was to be awarded an MBE came as an enormous surprise. I have always considered it a great privilege to be involved in education and to play a part, however small, in shaping the lives of children. It has also been a privilege to be able to contribute to the work of an amazing charity, the Little Princess Trust.”

Peace of mind for you and your family at all times
The Private GP & Night Doctor Service We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Hopefully, you will not need to see a doctor urgently, but accidents or illnesses can occur when least expected, and having to travel or wait several hours for healthcare can only make the ordeal worse. You can stay registered with your NHS GP, as our aim is not to replace your care but to work alongside it, providing you with our extra medical care when you or your family need it most. Abbey College Manchester recently celebrated the achievements of its A-level and Combined Studies students at a prestigious graduation ceremony. The Combined Studies Programme offers an alternative to A-levels, providing a new and exciting pathway to a university degree at a number of partner universities. To commend the students for their accomplishments, the leading independent college welcomed representatives from some of its partner universities – Keele, UCLAN, Plymouth and Teesside – to present each individual with their graduation certificate.
A number of students were also highly commended during the evening, held at the iconic Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel in Manchester, with Gold Standard awards and acknowledgements for attainment, resilience, progress and perseverance. Students, staff members, family, friends and other guests enjoyed an array of musical talent throughout the joyous ceremony as pianists, guitarists and vocalists performed a variety of both traditional and original songs. Liz Elam, Principal at Abbey College Manchester, welcomed the visitors and said: “It is my pleasure to welcome you all here today and I am so pleased to see
parents, friends of the college and our Year 13 students come together on this last occasion to celebrate as a college community. The fact that we are all here today in this supportive atmosphere confirms our college motto of ‘Achieving Success Together’. “Some students started their journey with us three years ago, while others have been with us just nine months, but they are all recognised for their determination, hard work and accomplishments. Strictly-inspired dance competition raises over £15k for local children with disabilities nine courageous, high-profile, local businesspeople swapped the boardroom for the dancefloor on saturday 29th June to raise much-needed funds for children’s charity Brainwave Jonathan Chianca, who is a local professional choreographer and creator of Diva Fever dance class.
The dancers were each paired up with a professional dancer from Cadmans Dance Centre and have been training for months in preparation for the Strictly Summer event, which was held at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa. All nine of the couples entertained the audience with their fabulous routines and certainly impressed the judges, who were: Brainwave Patrons Lord and Lady Fellowes; Nigel Horrocks of Nigel and Janice Horrocks Dance Promotions; and
On the night, Kunal Trehan and his professional dancing partner, Victoria Bennett, wowed the audience and the judges with a fantastic cha-cha routine and they won joint first place alongside Ann-Marie Atkins and her professional dancing partner, Callam Thomson, who were equally as impressive performing the tango. The couples will now share the highly coveted Brainwave Trophy! Event organiser and Brainwave Fundraiser, Joanne Freeman, said: “Our Strictly Summer event was full of fun and sparkles. We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated group of dancers, who were determined to raise as much money as possible for our charity. The money is still coming in but, so far, we have raised over £15,000, which is just incredible!” Brainwave is a UK national children’s charity that helps children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve greater independence. The charity does not
receive any government funding and relies on voluntary donations to run its three permanent centres in Somerset, Essex and Warrington. Joanne went on to say: “The money raised from this event will truly make a difference to the children and families we see at Brainwave. “I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the event such a success, including: the wonderful dancing couples; the brilliant judges; Cadmans Dance Centre for providing excellent professional dancers and training; The Mere Golf Resort & Spa for hosting the event; The Event Station for fantastic light and sound support; and last but not least, our wonderful MC, Beverley Uddin-Khandakar. “This is the second year we have put on this event and from all the families, staff and volunteers at Brainwave, we would like to send a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended and supported this event and generously donated on the night. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!’

LIFE-SAVING GADGETS Over the years, we’ve had so much fun playing with technology that is entertaining, labour-saving or simply desirable and beautiful. But what about the gadgets that can actually save your life?
Bear Grylls by Gerber Ultimate Survival Kit Breitling Emergency II
Kicking things off is a real pilot’s watch. The Breitling Emergency has actually been around since the ‘90s and is still a flagship for the brand – showing the world that Breitling watches are far from toys and trinkets. The Emergency ii has an antenna that, when you unscrew it, emits a homing beacon that gives your location to a rescuer wherever you are in the world. it’s not for everybody; if you’re not a professional pilot, you have to sign a legal disclaimer that you will bear the cost of any rescue intervention – which will be far from cheap. But a £12,000 watch and a rescue crew on standby is a small price to pay for some adventurers. breitling.com
i absolutely love this little pouch and carry it around in my car because i can’t think of many risky scrapes it couldn’t help me get out of. designed by the legendary Bear Grylls for hostile environments, this kit has so many tiny tools, gadgets and essentials in it that i’ve lost count. For everything from building shelters, catching and cooking food, providing heat and light, location signalling, repairs and more, the Gerber Ultimate kit is a real comfort for anyone that likes to get a bit off the beaten track. Minder personal alarm
Apple Watch
Personal alarms are not exactly cuttingedge technology but still a great and cheap gadget that can really save your life. You can get fancy ones that look like jewellery, but i can’t help but love the old-fashioned ones like this Minder, which looks like something from the ‘80s but really does the business. a satisfying grenade-style pull pin activates over 140 decibels, which ought to distract, terrify or thoroughly deafen any would-be attacker. Around £5, amazon.co.uk
Fans of the brand need no excuse to spend fortunes in the apple store, but here’s a new reason that might help sell a few more watches. Like the Breitling, the latest version of the apple watch is not just a clever piece of jewellery; it has already saved at least one person’s life with its new heart rate monitoring app. if it detects any unusual patterns or rhythms in your heart, while you are at rest or exercising, it triggers an alert. Bentley Manchester 25 Years – The Silver Sisters in 1919, w.o Bentley produced his first ever car bearing his name. His intention was ‘to build a fast car, a good car, and the best in its class’. From small beginnings, the Bentley Brand grew enormously and was highly recognised as a successful brand Mirroring the history of Bentley, some 25 years ago, Bentley Manchester first opened its doors in the centre of Knutsford and since then, hasn’t looked back. The dealership, now based on Mobberley Road, has gone from strength to strength, being proudly awarded Bentley Retailer of the Year in 2017 and coming in the top three for the past four years. Bentley Manchester has now been a part of Bentley’s history for a quarter of a century and to commemorate the occasion, Bentley Manchester has commissioned three very special models. The three Silver Sisters are finished in bespoke Stratos Silver, which is a colour that was patented by Bentley Manchester in 1997. Since then, only six cars have ever been produced bearing this colour, three of them pre the millennium and then the three silver sisters available today.
A Bentayga, GT and GTC created by Bentleys bespoke coachbuilders Mulliner all come with a stylish, dechromed appearance and come with the CarbonFibre Styling body kit as standard. Each of the cars proudly proclaims the Bentley Manchester 25 year logo and this is featured heavily throughout each of the cars. The stylish emblem can be found embroidered into the head rest of the seats with Stratos Silver contrast stitching and Stratos Silver leather highlights. It can also be found embedded in the grand black veneer fascia. The GT and GTC come with 22” Mulliner Black and hand-polished alloy wheels. The Bentayga comes with 22” five-spoke directional alloys. All three models come with high-gloss brake callipers.
When opening the doors of these three beautiful cars, you are greeted with 25-year-tread plates, highlighting that these are one off one pieces of engineering. Coinciding with Bentley Motors Centenary, the three sisters come with the centenary specification, which is only available on Bentleys created in 2019. • • •

DISTINGUISHED KOREA The hot hatch war is pretty much the most intense competition in the car industry. it reached its peak in the 80s, when the likes of the Vw Golf GTi, Ford Escort XR3 and the Peugeot 205 GTi dominated town centres, magazine covers and teenage fantasies. Those brands today are still at the forefront, fighting it out with ever faster and crazier versions, now joined by souped-up versions of Renault’s Megane and Vauxhall’s astra – all the way up to super-hatches from Mercedes-aMG and audi. Hyundai was never a brand you’d associate with this market, which is why the Korean carmaker deserves all the more respect for not only entering the arena but doing so emphatically with a credible, desirable contender. The i30n. This is a brand that has come an astonishingly long way in a short time. You’ll still find base-model Hyundais as

the budget option in most rental car fleets, but as i’ve argued in years gone by, cheap cars are nothing to be ashamed of – if done well. The range-topping i30n is done very well indeed, yet still comes cheaper than most of its competitors, from just £25k. Last year, it blazed across every awards ceremony, winning plaudits for its front-end grip, exhilarating exhaust sounds and immersive handling. Like all hot hatches nowadays, it pumps out the kind of horsepower you’d have expected from a supercar a generation ago, but that’s not what makes it unique today. i think what makes this car so special is the value for money – because it’s so hard to see (if any) cost cutting. certainly the design inside and out is contemporary and upmarket without being too homogeneous. The fastback body shape is particularly eye-catching, with shades of BMw influences at the
rear and the clear echoes of audi and Lexus in the big-mouth front grille. The sports seats too are a standout feature for their balance of support, finish and positioning for an involving driver experience. cars like these are aimed squarely at younger drivers for whom image and performance are equally high priorities. in other words, the car is expected to be driven hard but also cherished. i’m not about to start throwing around terms like ‘future classic’ too soon, but certainly it’s true that hot hatches do endure far longer than the more everyday models they’re based on, so it will be interesting to see how residual values hold up. The manufacturer is confident anyway with its impressive five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
