Manchester Midnight Walk

More than 1,500 walkers celebrated in style as St Ann's Hospice marked the 10th anniversary of the Manchester Midnight Walk.

Heavy showers eased thankfully, just as walkers set off on a 10k circuit of the city centre, past such landmarks as the Hilton, Manchester Cathedral and the Northern Quarter.

More than 1,500 walkers celebrated in style as St Ann's Hospice marked the 10th anniversary of the Manchester Midnight Walk.

St Ann's is hoping to raise around £180,000 from the event, bringing the total amount of donations since the walk began in 2007 to £1.8m. The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Carl Austin-Behan sent walkers on their way from Manchester Central:

"When I saw the Midnight Walk advertised I thought the least I could do was go along and cheer on the walkers,” said the Mayor. “St Ann's does amazing work and many are walking in memory of loved ones, so it's a poignant occasion."

The Mayor joined in a Zumba warm-up after live music had got the party started. The event was hosted

by BBC Radio Manchester presenter Phil Trow and a minute's applause was held in memory of lost loved ones.

MediaCityUK set to double in size over the next 10 years under ambitious plans submitted to Salford City Council

Up to 10 new buildings are envisaged with a development value of more than £1 billion. Key features of Phase 2 of MediaCityUK include 50,000 m2 of offices, 1,800 apartments, retail and leisure, complemented by innovative public spaces with a pedestrian promenade running through the scheme.

Outline approval for the plans was granted in 2006. A condition of that permission was that detailed proposals, including all building designs and specifications, needed to be brought forward this year. The plans are expected to be considered by Salford's planning panel in September.

MediaCityUK is a joint venture between Peel Land & Property and Legal & General Capital, who share a long-term commitment to the further expansion of

a creative and digital hub which already houses 250 businesses including the BBC, ITV, dock10, Ericsson and SIS. Eamonn O’Neal joins St Ann’s Hospice as Chief Executive

St Ann’s Hospice has announced that Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester and Group Managing Editor of Trinity Mirror’s regional publications Eamonn O’Neal has joined the organisation as its new Chief Executive.

Eamonn, who has previously served as Chair of the Board of Trustees at the hospice for almost three years, said: “I am honoured to be asked to join St Ann's as Chief Executive and looking forward to being part of an exemplary team providing unrivalled care, which has a profound impact on patients and families. “It is a really interesting time for the hospice sector and, as a local charity, St Ann’s is loved by many people from right across Greater Manchester. I am looking forward to leading the hospice towards its 50th anniversary and into the next phase of its history.” Eamonn will lead the team of hospice and trading company staff, along with the 800-strong army of volunteers who support St Ann’s.

Top cancer researcher runs up funds for charity

A consultant breast surgeon and leading clinical researcher at Wythenshawe-based Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention recently swapped her scrubs for sweatbands by taking on this year's gruelling Lakeland Marathon.

Cliona Kirwan signed up for the 26.2-mile challenge – which took place in Coniston in the heart of the Lake District – to raise funds to support vital research projects at Genesis, which is the UK's only charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer.

Cliona, also Chair of Genesis' Scientific Advisory Board, raised over £1,800 and hopes her efforts will help the charity take a step closer to achieving its aim of preventing breast cancer for future generations. In addition to her role at Genesis, Cliona is part of the consultant breast surgery team at University Hospital of South Manchester, performing treatment and preventative surgery, as well as breast reconstruction procedures. She also conducts breast cancer research at the new Manchester Cancer Research Centre and leads a group of scientists who are studying how the blood clotting system may influence the growth and spread of breast cancer. This research could lead to new ways of detecting or monitoring breast cancer and even result in new treatments being developed. Charlotte’s DIARY: Nest is best With just a few weeks to go until number one child heads off to university, I have spent my time wisely asking Google – the font of all knowledge – lots of questions about what is required to prepare him. He achieved the grades for his course, which is a good starting point. And while I am sure, in the main, that this was down to his hard work, I am certain my A* in nagging will have made a major contribution.

o, he has a place and a start date – all is good. My first question to Google is ‘what next?’ Suggestions are plentiful. ‘It would be a good idea for your child to be able to do their laundry, cook, and clean a bathroom… you would be surprised at how many can’t do the basics’.

Erm… I know I have been going on about the need to do all these things for a number of years but, deep down, I also know I have failed. Yes, there is more than boiling an egg to his culinary repertoire, but I fear it may be his signature dish. I swiftly move on to laundry. A tutorial on this subject has taken place on at least three occasions. But there is a still a small part of both of us that fears what might happen when he washes rather than watches. Just how many garments can we realistically claim actually began life off-pink? As for cleaning a bathroom, it was all I could do to get him to the clean his room!

Not to worry, there are a few weeks left to squeeze in a crash course in those subjects.

OK Google, what else? ‘Budgeting, shopping and handling the social life’ seem high on the agenda, particularly in big cities where temptation and new spending opportunities are plentiful. I once saw a friend showing her son ‘how to shop’ the week before uni started. Great advice on comparing prices and getting value for money. I thought I would tag along to learn a thing or two, but they quickly shook me off. As to budgeting, well, my attempts at charging rent during his gap year left him howling with laughter, so no joy there.

I give up – I need to accept my failings. Perhaps ‘nest is best’ after all, and I should persuade him to take another gap year?

MENAGERIE THE LATEST RESTAURANT IN TOWN Jo Boon sits down with Karina Jadhav to discuss Menagerie, a restaurant designed to combine a homelike feel with a magical sense of escapism. Karina Jadhav is a businesswoman, world traveler, and designer of the best and brightest in Mancunian restaurants. Her latest project is Menagerie, an eclectic new dining experience opening on the 11th August at One New Bailey, Bridge Street.

Where it all began Karina began her journey with Southern Eleven, a little place in the Arndale food court at the heart of Manchester, but quickly realised that the quality of the food deserved a restaurant of its own. Her creations have always been at the cutting edge of fine dining, and her next venture – Neighbourhood – brought the taste of New York to Manchester. Karina is modest enough to be a little hesitant over the word ‘special’, but the latter was certainly just that. A vibrant restaurant that proved an instant hit and embraced a unique style of sharing food that fits so perfectly with Mancunian culture.

Karina loved every restaurant and feels that each one contributed to where she is now. She started out as a journalist with no business experience, and her adventure began when she was just 24. Each restaurant represents a progression for Karina; reflecting, she believes, her personal growth. Victors in Hale, for example, was much more laid-back than its predecessor (Neighbourhood) and her latest restaurant is even more so. Karina is certain that this personal touch is the reason for their success.

Manchester is always growing, evolving, and creating new dining experiences – just as Karina is. She is confident in both what she likes personally, and what she knows will appeal to the public.

Her personal investment in each project is truly exemplary and this commitment has paid off with restaurants that are always taken to the public’s heart. She works on each project herself; from the DJ booth to the light fittings, and recalls that at Southern Eleven, she even dressed Hercules – the resident taxidermied bear!

Words of advice and inspiration When I ask Karina more about this extraordinary success, she acknowledges it is a very competitive industry and new restaurants are starting up all the time. Her advice to anyone starting out?

“Really think about what you will enjoy.” She believes in following your passion but balancing it with that which is commercially viable and attractive to diners. If you are looking for a role model, you couldn’t go far wrong with Karina Jadhav.

Her inspirations are drawn, in part, from her extensive travels, something she hopes that her customers can relate to. Most of us travel, or at least read and hear about far off exotic countries, and miss them when we return. Karina aims to create a welcoming restaurant with a home-from-home feel, but one which also offers a real sense of escapism. It will be relaxing, but with a clear element of the theatrical to keep diners engaged. In the past, she’s travelled across the United States and, more recently, she’s visited France and

Ibiza. It’s a mix of these travels old and new which have inspired her style and combined to create a modern American menu sprinkled with international and European influences.

The menu The first draft of the menu is complete and is being perfected as you read this feature. Karina allows me a sneak peek at one of the dishes; lobster and prawn toast rolled into five little balls and perfectly designed for sharing. This exemplifies so much of Karina’s style – a classic modern American dish with a little twist that makes it all her own. My mouth waters just to think of all the delicacies being designed by a team of superlative chefs. Karina reveals that the tacos are still her favourite; a signature dish that has travelled with her across her series of extraordinary restaurants.

It isn’t just travel that has inspired Karina though, she laughs as she tells me that she finds inspiration in almost everything. When travelling to Walt Disney World recently, the performance element, high-quality and efficient service impressed her and reinforced her belief in creating engaging dining opportunities. Equally, a recent fashion show where the models appeared to walk on water stirred her most recent cocktail sharing idea – cocktails which appear to do the impossible too. Excited? Make sure you are there on opening night!

The team behind Menagerie The hard work invested in this exciting and creative project should not be underestimated, and Karina is careful not to take all the credit for herself. She says she has had lots of help and inspiration along the way, and could not have created Menagerie without her management team. Karina reserved special praise for Carlo Graziani, the mixologist responsible for designing the drinks menu, and Olivia Casson and Yalcin Ibrahim Ali, creators of the dishes that will make up the Modern American Menu.

When I ask her what she looks for when recruiting, she says: “The main thing is to have people who are on board for the long run. You will end up spending more time with your team than your family, so it’s important to create a family environment at work and have people who share your vision.”

The vision itself is truly extraordinary and the name Menagerie, interpreted as a collection of exotic animals, sets the tone for a restaurant that is theatrical, engaging and offers a true sense of escapism. See you on the 11th!

For he is none other than the Carlo in San Carlo.

As chairman, he is at the helm of the astonishingly successful restaurant group which employs almost 1,000 people in its 17 UK venues – there are more overseas – and last year turned over more than £46 million. With four of his five children – including Marcello, Alessandro and Sacha actively involved, he has fended off venture capital predators and insists his creation, a virtual reinvention of the Italian restaurant, will always remain a family business.

In Sicily, Carlo studied accountancy at a local college, but worked as a hairdresser at weekends to supplement the family income during the hard times of post-war Italy. He didn't like the accountancy course, so used his newfound skills, a work permit provided by a Leeds barber and £12 loaned by his brother, to set out by third-class train to find another life in Leeds.

A hobby and a passion Carlo arrived in Manchester in 1970 and opened his first hair salon in St Ann's Arcade, then ran Figaro's in Kendals department store in Deansgate. But despite his success – he says he made "big money" – his passion, like his father's back in Ragusa, was always for food: "I spent it all eating in the top restaurants, including The Savoy in London," said Carlo. "Food was my hobby; in fact, I became more experienced in restaurants than some people who'd spent all their lives in the business."

Eventually, his hobby won over his successful hairdressing career and, with three partners, he opened his first restaurant, Coco in Manchester’s Fountain Street, in the early 1980s. It was different from the stereotypical Italian restaurants of the time; modern and authentic, the place was an instant hit and always buzzing. Then came Cocotoo in Whitworth Street with its striking replica of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.

The game changer "It was also a big success," said Carlo, "but I wanted to be on my own, to express myself and my ideas with food, so I opened my first San Carlo in Birmingham in 1992." Openings in Bristol and Leicester followed, then in 1994 came the real game changer – San Carlo Manchester on King Street West, in a building that had been the graveyard of several national pizza chains. Ironically, it is just across the road from where Carlo crimped hair in Figaro's. By the

time the huge 200-cover restaurant celebrated its 10th anniversary, 1.8 million customers had dined there, including many celebrities.

Such success not only shows no sign of abating, but has enabled San Carlo to spread its wings far across the city and beyond.

The Distefano empire now comes in a range of guises: San Carlo restaurants in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester; Cicchetti in Manchester, Bangkok, Qatar and London; Fumo in Manchester and Birmingham, Bottega and Gran Cafe in Selfridges, Manchester; Signor Sassi in London, Kuwait, Bangkok and, finally, Fiorentina (featuring Florentine grills) at the Marriott Hotel in Hale Barns, where plans are afoot to develop the outside terrace. Carlo puts his success and the popularity of his creations down to great food, the very best of ingredients (many sourced from Italy) and "being honest" with customers. But there's more to it than that. Carlo, now 72 but with no thoughts of retirement, says the business is "my life, my work, my hobby, my holiday, my obsession."

People need people So, how does the family manage such a vast organisation? Carlo’s son Marcello explains: "It comes down to people at the end of the day. We cannot run it all by ourselves, but we have a lot of good people around us. And we are also bringing young people through the business. "We will keep on growing, but organically. There has never been a formal strategy for expansion. We see what sites come up; one year we may not open a new restaurant, another year it may be two or three."

San Carlo is well known in Italy – 80 per cent of the staff is Italian – so, when people inquire after jobs, they can select the best. Waiters are expected to regard their work as a career with pride and passion. Chefs – who go to Italy four or five times a year – are given the freedom to express themselves, but Carlo is always the final arbiter of what goes on the menu. And, as Marcello says: "The essence of Italian food is simplicity, but simple dishes demand the finest ingredients. We don't do Mediterranean fusion – the menu is authentic Italian, the best dishes from the various regions.”

As a measure of San Carlo's quest for the best, Marcello added: "We couldn't find anyone in the UK making proper Italian ice cream. So we bought the equipment and brought in five specialists from Italy to do the ice cream and the bakery."

Ibiza for grown-ups The kids are back at school, and parents looking for some quality adult time should head to the Balearics. Jill Nash discovers a short-haul escape to the ‘White Island’ is a much-needed tonic.

SLEEP Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel first opened its doors in 2011, making a name for itself championing huge international DJ names (Guetta, Solomun, Avicii), amazing stage production, glamorous dancers and a fantastically-placed VIP section. There are three types of traditional dance: the Kandyan dances of the Hill Country (known as Uda Rata Natum), the low country dances for southern plains (known as Pahatharata Natum), and Sabaragamuwa dances or Sabaragamuwa Natum. In addition, there are a number of Hindu folk dances, such as Kavadi, that are also performed at these unmissable parades.

Kandyan dance takes its name from Kandy (the last royal capital of Sri Lanka) and is considered the traditional dance of country. It features a highly-developed system of rhythm, provided by cymbals known as ‘Thalampata’.

There are five distinct types of Uda Rata dances: Ves, Naiyandi, Udekki, Pantheru and Vannam. Pahatharata dances are executed in order to calm the ‘malignant spirits who provoke diseases’. The Sabaragamuwa dance features unique hand and feet formations, accompanied by a distinct style of instrument playing, singing and, not forgetting, enchanting costumes.

llow me to explain. It all started out so innocently; simply handing out brown paper bags filled with goodies to anyone who came a-knockin’ on my potting shed door and answering to the pet name of ‘The Pusher’. In hindsight, I can see how our amazing boys in blue jumped to the wrong conclusion. Word to the wise, remember that ‘potting shed’ and ‘grow your own’ can take on a whole new meaning when seen or heard out of context.

You see, it’s glut season. And, in glut season, I am indeed a pusher. But a veggie pusher, honest Your Honour! My little bags of free treats are merely genuine attempt to avoid my mountainous harvest going to waste.

You see, his Lordship and I are drowning in courgettes, beans, tomatoes, beetroot, mange tout, lettuce, cucumber, sweetcorn, chillies and peppers. Not to mention the raspberries which are cropping faster than I can pour the cream.

So, dear readers, can you please remind me to start the sensible practice of succession

planting next season? Wise grow-yourowners do this as a matter of course and I intend to join them. Apparently, the key is to sow small batches of seeds fortnightly to ensure a consistent supply of crops rather than a huge one that is surplus to requirements.

However, if you too are faced with a pile of excess veggies, here’s my go-to recipe for using up the superstar of glut season: the courgette. You’ll be amazed how sweet vegetables can become when baked in cakes, plus your kids won’t even realise they’re eating zucchini. Result.

Courgette cake ingredients: 500g of grated courgette, 200g unsalted butter, 300g plain flour, 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda, 250g jar of sugar-free apricot jam, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon and a splash of full-fat milk.

How to make: Preheat oven to 180 degrees C/Gas Mark 4. Cream butter and two-thirds

of your jam in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add vanilla essence/splash milk. Stir in grated courgettes, skins and all. Add plain flour and bicarbonate of soda, stir thoroughly. Pour mixture into a 20cm greased cake tin and bake for approx. 30 minutes. Cool before removing from tin.

Slice in two and spread the remaining third of the jam inside. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top, grab a cuppa and enjoy.

And for all you lovely lushes out there, a novel way to use up glut season’s other main culprit – cherry tomatoes – is my mate’s rather brilliant, boozy idea. Just poke a few holes in each cherry tomato, place in a bowl, cover with Absolut Vodka, and refrigerate for two days. Then fire up the barbecue, get your mates over, pass the bowl around… and see how long it takes before they start dancing on the table. right, must dash. i really need to get rid of my winter grow lamps before the drug squad comes a-knockin’ again.

Suzy Glaskie WHY FAT REALLY IS YOUR FRIEND The National Obesity Forum recently set the cat amongst the pigeons by taking a robust stand against the low-fat diet that we’ve all been recommended to follow for decades. With so many opposing opinions flying around, it’s no wonder people are confused as to what they should and should not be eating.

Here’s some context. Ever since the 1960s, when saturated fat was incorrectly demonised as the cause of heart disease, fat has been cast as the bogey man of foods. The theory that eating fat makes you fat has stuck around ever since. Hence, the supermarket shelves groaning with low-fat products that just perpetuate the myth that fat is something to avoid at all costs.

Meanwhile, sugar was the real culprit behind the meteoric rise in obesity and Type 2 diabetes, not to mention a host of other chronic diseases. Back in the day when I worked in food processing PR, I balked at the amount of additives, not to mention sugar, crowbarred into low-fat products just to make them palatable.

You see, stripping the demon fat out of food threw up a big problem for food manufacturers. No fat equals no taste and no “mouthfeel”, as it’s called in the industry.

So, is dietary fat good or bad? Well, the answer is both, because not all fats are created equal.

Some fats are indeed very unhealthy. They include vegetable oils (sunflower oil, for instance) and heavily processed, hydrogenated trans fats. They lead to inflammation which has now been shown to play a role in nearly all chronic diseases. They can also lead to weight gain, skin breakouts, high blood pressure and liver strain.

Now, let’s look at the good side of fats.

Fat is one of the body’s most basic building blocks. We each have more than 10 trillion cells in our body and every single one of them needs high-quality fat. The right fats (with the emphasis on the word “right”) increase your metabolism, stimulate fat burning, keep hunger in check, improve your cholesterol profile and can protect against Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancer.

They help to keep hormone levels stable and they nourish our skin, hair and nails. Our bodies need fat for insulation, vitamin and mineral absorption and to protect our organs.

Therapist Toni Mackenzie takes control

If you’d have told Toni Mackenzie twenty years ago how much her life would change, from wife and mother to celebrated self-help guru, she admits she would have struggled to believe you: “It would have been very difficult for me to imagine back then.”

Since divorcing in 1993, becoming a single mum of two and feeling like her world had crashed to the ground, Toni has turned her life around.

Her top tips for meditation include repeating a mantra or meaningful word like peace or love, or focusing on breathing to keep your mind calm and clear: “Moving meditations or mindfulness can include focusing on your feet as they touch the ground while out walking, being aware of your surroundings, being in the moment and perhaps even smiling at strangers!”

She also finds meditation apps can be helpful.

“Happiness does not come from outside experiences or other people,” Toni explains, “ultimately happiness is an inside job!” When asked if she misses life in the air, Toni says she loved her job at the time, but she has moved on and enjoys living life in the present. As for the term ‘trolley dolly’, she admits: “It does sound rather degrading, but I never took it seriously because I know how much training cabin crew have to go through in case of emergency.”

So does Toni now feel truly happy? “Yes,” she replies, “I feel content with my life.” So remember, ladies and gentlemen, calmness is key and the most important thing to do is to learn how to F.L.Y. (first love yourself).

Laser Eye Surgery helps Heather Heather Clatworthy has always enjoyed an active lifestyle and is a keen swimmer. Heather is currently training for a 13 mile swim from Moville in Donegal, Ireland to Portstewart in Northern Ireland - the swim hasn’t been officially completed since 1929!

The importance of being concussion-aware What iS a concuSSion?

A concussion is a condition that results in a temporary disruption to the normal functioning of the brain due to injury. This injury is often classified as ‘minor’ and can happen as a result of a fall, road traffic accident or playing sports i.e. football, rugby and hockey.

Why iS concuSSion SeriouS? Concussions are serious because they can cause ongoing symptoms and brain function problems. For those who play sports, failure to recognise a concussion can lead to an increased risk of a second injury, which can be more serious and, very rarely, fatal. Thankfully, most people completely recover within about two weeks of the injury and are not left with long-term conditions.

Symptoms Contrary to popular belief, less than 10% of concussions involve a loss of consciousness and these can be so momentary that they are missed altogether. Concussion affects different people in different ways. The most common signs are short-term memory loss, confusion, dizziness and a headache, but people often report a wide range of symptoms, which can include: • • • • • • • •

Vertigo hearing loss Blurred vision Light and noise sensitivity Diminished taste and smell Personality change Fatigue and sleep disturbances impaired concentration and attention.

What to Do aFter a concuSSion?

It is important to ensure regular and close monitoring of an individual for the first 24 to 48 hours after the injury.

Although most concussions are mild, the potential always

exists for complications, some of which can be lifethreatening (such as bleeding on the brain or secondimpact syndrome). Such complications may occur immediately (minutes to hours) or over several days after the injury. If there are ongoing problems such as headache, memory problems, speech problems or balance problems after a blow to the head, then an assessment by a GP or at A&E should be sought.

If concussion is suspected, ideally, you should be assessed as soon as possible by a doctor or a specialist. Whilst most people recover without any problems, it is important to follow a programme of rest and gradual return to activity to maximise recovery.

What DoeS a SPeciaLiSt Do? Depending on your symptoms, age and the severity of the injury, you would normally be given a physical examination and a specific concussion examination.

Depending on the circumstances of the injury, a number of additional tests (cognitive assessment, test of eye movements, balance or MRI scan) may be required.

Management and return to activity The initial management of concussion is focused on a period of relative physical and cognitive rest, meaning that the patient should try to limit activities that stimulate the mind such as excessive use of personal electronic devices, watching television or even driving. Once the symptoms have completely resolved, the individual undergoes a programme of gradually increasing stimulation and activity before they are medically cleared to return to normal functions.

Around 80-90% of patients with acute concussions have an uncomplicated recovery and their condition generally resolves within two weeks.

INDIAN As a fan of word play, as well as a fan of a good curry, I was excited to visit Indique on Burton Road recently for some uniquely Indian food. You can see what they did there.

It’s at the ‘other’ end of Burton Road, meaning you have to turn left out the tram stop not right. It’s smart and nicely decorated with big windows filling the place with light. Already it feels a bit different, a bit special.

I took my two children who both claim to love a curry but, until tonight, refused to try anything other than a chicken korma and 300 poppadums. I started with an order of dahi puri and chicken tikka. The latter was served beautifully on a piece of slate, complete with a delicious mustard honey sauce.

My fussy 11-year-old daughter not only ate it without complaint (unheard of), but wanted more. My son, a little more adventurous but no gastronome, ate three of the five dahi puri.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. It made me regret sticking with their very ordinary main course, they were clearly enjoying these flavours.

Their chicken korma came served in a large ceramic jug.

It was a very generous portion. They spooned on the rich and covered it in the thick, creamy sauce. I tried some too, for the purposes of the review, of course. It was good. No heat (which suited their young palettes) but fresh and zingy. It got the thumbs up from the kids. My lamb saag came next and I tucked into the succulent, large chunks of soft, flavoursome lamb. Divine. A friend told me that this dish is the measure of a good restaurant and that, if they get this right, everything else will be good. Well, it was good, and generous in portion size too. I took the leftovers home and enjoyed them for lunch the next day.

I saw different food coming out to the other tables and its presentation was nothing like you see in your regular curry house. It has style. Finesse. It made me wish I had room for more. But, as I live only a few minutes walk away, I reminded myself that I can always come back and try even more from the menu.

Next time you’re hopping off the tram or planning a trip to Burton Road for food, walk in a different direction. Turn left out the tram stop. Sample the food at Indique, and then go back for more. It’s fresh, different and delicious. I might even go back tonight.

A remarkable journey began in July 1996, when a pavement A board announced ’Thai food sold here’ outside the Royal Oak pub in Alderley Edge. Waiting on tables was her husband Steve, who had fallen in love with Thai food and culture during far eastern travels as a University of Leeds student.

Mark Duerr: Preserving his family’s proud contribution to Manchester’s rich heritage F. Duerr & Sons has a proud and distinguished place within Manchester’s significant and storied industrial history.

Ours is a city of firsts: from the world’s first free public library at Chetham’s to Rutherford splitting the atom, not to mention the world’s first computer and the very first broadcast of that, now sadly demised, unique and essential British cultural phenomenon, Top of the Pops (from an old church in Rusholme). Where our city has led, many have often followed.

Cotton and the Industrial Revolution placed Manchester at the centre of it all in the 19th century, but as new technologies and world wars, with their ensuing depressions, moved the world’s fulcrum away from us, Manchester lost its way in the world. A small, family-run jam-making business, established during the height of the city’s industriousness, rode out the highs and lows, and grew into one of the country’s leading family-owned companies. Oh, and it’s also made Manchester, once King Cotton, the new peanut butter production capital of the country!

This is all quite some way from the company’s humble beginnings 135 years ago, long before peanut butter was on anybody’s sandwiches. Frederick Duerr, the son of a Bermondsey leather worker, and his wife Mary had settled in Heywood, where he worked in the grocery trade. An encounter in 1881 with a buyer from the Heywood Industrial Co-Operative Society, who was struggling to source good, unadulterated jams and preserves, led to Frederick and Mary, the latter renowned locally as a producer of delicious, homemade jams and supplier to the local Co-Operative.

Success and expansion rapidly followed and, in 1893, the company built its own modern and technologically-advanced factory in Old Trafford. Frederick pioneered new methods and processes; from the storage of the fruit – in the days before deep freeze – to the actual manufacturing of the jam. He applied scientific theory to his business, which resulted in fine jams and very successful sales. In 1905, he pioneered vacuum packaging for jam jars which, for a good half-century, placed Duerr’s miles ahead of some of their competitors.

Frederick was also an enlightened employer, which was uncommon in late 19th century Manchester. He believed in paying his employees fairly and treating them well. Such benevolence produced a loyalty to the company that resulted in generations of family members working for Duerr’s and was further enhanced by the Duerr family members, who would go on to work alongside employees at all stages of the company’s production process. This valued and positive employer-employee relationship continues to this day, testament to Frederick’s great foresight in steering the company into innovative and progressive areas that led, ultimately, to great success.

Two world wars, the Great Depression and Manchester’s gradual decline presented challenges to Duerr’s, but it has endured and now reflects the phoenix-like rising from the ashes that the city itself has undergone.

Mark Duerr is the fifth generation of his family to head the company and has spent all his life immersed in its history and practices. He never considered not working in the company and, just as soon as he was able to, left school and started working at the Old Trafford factory.

Though his father Tony headed up the company at that time, Mark and his younger brother Richard were under no illusions that they would be given an easy ride because of their privileged positions or, indeed, in life. Tony Duerr recognised the importance and value of not spoiling his children, especially if they were to make successful careers within the family business.

Expansion into the big supermarkets and the production of peanut butter (which only began in 1998) has positioned Duerr’s as one of the nation’s leading independent jam producers and the country’s largest producer of peanut butter by far. Investment in new technologies and in their people has always been important for Duerr’s and, in 1995, they moved to their current home in Wythenshawe. Mark‘s stewardship now covers a £65m business with over 600 products and 240 employees, a visible presence in every supermarket in the land, and an invisible one in most cereal bowls too – the company creates honey for the nation’s favourite breakfast cereals!

Duerr’s long-established commitment to charitable causes sees it hosting extravagant annual balls (usually with a ‘jammy pun’ as the theme) that have become a veritable highlight of the social calendar. Of course, they also provide generous funding for the respective charities involved; last year’s ‘jAmerican Ball’ raised over £55,000 for Parkinson’s UK. Mark, Richard and the rest of the Duerr’s family of employees take these charity balls very seriously and everyone gets involved to ensure they are a huge success for both the revellers and the receiving charity.

Manchester is the city of regeneration, with its people continuously driving that transformation. Frederick Duerr and, let us not forget, his wife Mary, possessed the foresight, innovation and resolve that has so long been associated with Manchester.

The successful passing of the baton from generation to generation is testament to Duerr’s commitment to its loyal employees and valued customers, both of whom they regard as being part of one big family.

Mark Duerr is keenly aware of the familial and corporate responsibility he carries and is committed to ensuring that Duerr’s continues to retain its place at the top table. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, anyone?

Leading from the back Michael Lavizani, General Manager of QHotels’ Mottram Hall He was subsequently fast-tracked into management, although Lavizani says: “I only saw it as a stepping stone until I got a ‘proper’ job in banking.”

Truth be told, he was a rising star; quickly gaining promotion and personally accepting that his people skills, inherent as a young Iranian, coupled with his analytical training, would serve him well as the business progressed into the computer era.

Joining Michael Purtill at Principal Hotels would be the start of a successful business relationship that has continued for over 26 years. Today, Purtill is still Lavizani’s boss, as he presides over the group of 26 QHotels. In 2013, Purtill sent him to their ailing Telford hotel, which was struggling post the recession and many businesses in the area were closing down. Following Purtill’s mantra of keeping people at all costs, Lavizani set out to turn around the hotel’s fortunes using the existing staff. Having restored their belief and family spirit, the hotel rose to become ‘Hotel of the Year’ in 2014. Lavizani is very proud of his legacy and brings this same ethos to his management style at Mottram Hall.

Michael Lavizani’s route into hotel management was far from the traditional journey taken by most. Having left Tehran, he attended Sacred Heart school in Hertford before graduating from the London School of Economics with an economics degree.

Listen to Lavizani’s story, and it’s evident that his Iranian family values and financial background have played a major part in his successful career.

Like many undergraduates, Michael needed extra cash, which he earned as a hotel night porter. This brought him into contact with Thistle Hotels, then owned by Scottish & Newcastle breweries.

At the time of his graduation in 1985, the market was struggling, but things took a fortunate turn thanks to the hotel’s Personnel and Training Manager who spotted Lavizani’s potential and offered him a place on their management training course.

His predecessor James Stewart had served Mottram Hall (formerly De Vere) well, before handing over the reins of Cheshire’s finest golf and leisure resort. Lavizani has since pushed the business even further, possibly helped by some free advertising from TV’s ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’ and a stream of footballing celebrities enjoying the good life. He has taken Mottram Hall to the highest occupancy levels in the business, triggering further development of the hotel.

Meeting Lavizani, one realises just why he has such a positive effect on his staff and, ultimately, the customer. His softly-spoken politeness draws you into the conversation and he is selfdeprecating about his successes. He maintains that he has led from the back, nudging the team forward. It’s a skill that continues to serve him well.

Family life for Lavizani is somewhat fragmented at the moment; his German wife Sylvia and 15-year-old rugby-mad son Lawrence live outside of Glasgow, while his daughter Lavinia studies Classics at Cambridge. Without fail, he makes the long drive back to Scotland every weekend and, once his son’s GCSEs are over, he hopes that family life will be fully restored in Cheshire and that “a place in The King’s School rugby team” awaits young Lawrence.

Janika’s a discus champion

Didsbury student Janika MacMillan has been crowned discus champion at the Manchester Schools Athletics event, securing gold even though she only took up the sport last year.

The 15-year-old Withington Girls' School (WGS) student entered the competition at the eleventh hour after being encouraged to participate in the discus event by her PE teacher Miss Jess Richards. Janika's impressive 18.88m throw earned her top position in a sport which WGS Headmistress Mrs. Sue Marks had once excelled; 70

previously representing Cheshire and awarded an athletics 'Blue' whilst studying at Oxford.

Mrs. Marks, whose own personal best was 30m, commented: "Janika is a talented sportsperson and already represents Withington at lacrosse and hockey. When given the opportunity to try her hand at a new sport, she worked hard at practice and quickly honed the necessary skills; enabling her to achieve highly at this popular inter-school competition. We actively encourage our girls to embrace new challenges, both in and out of the classroom, and are delighted that Janika triumphed on the day. I am particularly proud that we have a gold

medal winner in Janika, as discus was a favourite sport of mine through university."

In describing her discus training, Janika said: "My PE teacher Miss Richards encouraged me to use dierent techniques. After throwing too far indoors during our sports lessons, we were encouraged to throw outdoors instead to reach our potential. It was lovely to win my event, but I really enjoyed the experience of the competition overall.

It was great to spend time with the other girls in the team and to share their celebrations in winning medals too."

Education news Fundraising ball raises nearly £30k for gifted girls

Manchester High School for Girls recently hosted its most successful Bursary Ball to date at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. Key 103 DJ Darren Proctor and TV presenter Jenny Powell played hosts for the evening and a staggering £29,500 was raised. All proceeds went directly to the school’s new bursary campaign ‘Never Over100ked’, which aims to bring the 100th Pankhurst Bursary pupil to Manchester High School for Girls. The original Pankhurst Bursary Appeal was launched in 2010 with the aspiration to raise £2 million to enable 100 girls to pass through Manchester High with financial assistance. Thanks to donations from loyal supporters, 82 girls to date have benefitted and the new campaign is all about reaching the remaining 18 girls. Outgoing Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, Sophie Haughton and Ebubechi Okpalugo, have both benefitted from bursary assistance during their time at the school. The girls, both of whom have offers to study medicine at university this September, delivered an emotional and heartfelt address to the audience about the impact that Manchester High has had on their lives.

Sophie said: “Being Head Girl during my final year of Man High is an honour I cannot put into words; it was a sign that the school loved me as much as I loved it! When Headmistress Mrs. Hewitt broke the news to me in her office, I was so shocked that I was actually speechless. I’ve never told anyone this before, but becoming Head Girl was an aspiration I’ve had since my early days at the school. Never once did I think that being a bursary student would prohibit me from accomplishing this dream, at Manchester High we are all judged on merit and merit alone.”

Willow Foundation victorious at Altrincham Grammar School tea party

Sixth Form students from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (AGSB) recently held their annual tea party, a tradition that began in 2008 as a fundraising initiative for the Willow Foundation – a charity that supported AGSB student Chad Mulholland who sadly passed away that year.

The Willow Foundation is a charity that arranges special days for terminally ill young people and AGSB are proud to support it in memory of

Chad. This year, the tea party included a presidential-themed ‘bake off’ which saw the Republicans (teachers) go head to head with the Democrats (students), both bidding to create the best cake.

The afternoon was attended by pupils from both AGSB and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls in a collective effort to raise as much as possible by later auctioning the cakes.

The event allowed students to make use of the school’s food technology facilities – food science is offered for GCSE at AGSB, a great way to prepare young people for student life.

Commenting on the event, Sixth Form AGSB student George Hallwood said: “We all had a lot of fun whilst raising monies for this incredible charity. After furious counting, the

Democrats came out on top with a 55% split of the money raised. Clinton can only hope to replicate the success of AGSB’s finest! The icing on the cake was undoubtedly the Willow Foundation coming out as winners with £700 being raised in a single afternoon. AGSB hopes to raise more than ever this year for the charity.”

Woodlands Day Nursery and Nursery School celebrate ‘Ofsted outstanding’

Woodlands Day Nursery and Nursery School in Timperley has achieved the highest Ofsted rating of ‘outstanding’ in all areas. Woodlands Day Nursery, caring for children aged 0-5 years, is part of the Elmscot Group, an Altrincham-based

childcare organisation comprising of four day nurseries and eight School’s Out out-of-school clubs. Owned and run by two local mums, the Elmscot Group provides exceptional nursery day care, preschool education and out-of-school childcare. Eight of their 12 childcare settings have now been judged ‘Ofsted outstanding’ – a level of quality unmatched by any other regional provider.

The Ofsted inspector commented that, not only was the nursery ‘outstanding’, but had ‘maintained it in style’. The inspector felt that both the managers and team were exceptionally dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to providing children and their families with the very best early years provision. “All aspects of teaching are outstanding,” stated the inspector. “Children are active, confident and eager to try new things. They are extremely well prepared for the next stage in their learning and development, including their eventual move to school. Relationships with parents were noted as very good. The inspector felt that they are extremely well informed about their child’s progress and are superbly supported to contribute to their learning.

Local athletes amongst elite

Several talented track and field athletes from Hartford’s Grange School have continued to make outstanding progress, competing successfully against the best in the country.

Upper Sixth Form student Harry Lord is currently ranked 2nd in the country for his age group in decathlon. His strongest event is javelin; in which he has thrown an impressive 59.36m.

Harry’s sporting success has also helped him to win a scholarship to the world-famous Princeton University in the United States.

Meanwhile, during a recent event at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, 100m star Fisayo Williamson-Taylor set a new personal best of 10.89 seconds, a remarkable time considering he is just 16 years of age and that it was recorded in the middle of his GCSE examinations.

15-year-old Ben Lee has run the 800m in 1:55.12, which ranks him 5th in the country with a year still to go in his age division. Cameron Duff, just 14, is already ranked 5th in the country in the 200m. His personal best is just 23.7 seconds and he also has another year remaining in the U15 division.

Manchester Grammar School pupil wins Shine Media Award

A Cheadle teenager has helped his school win a prestigious national award thanks to his exceptional design skills.

17-year-old Ali Abod, a pupil at The Manchester Grammar School, is responsible for the design and layout of the school’s newspaper The New Mancunian, which gives a voice to aspiring student journalists. Ali’s excellence was recognised at the 2016 Shine School Media Awards, a prestigious competition for studentrun publications, held at Stationers’ Hall in London on 21 June. The New Mancunian fought off stiff competition

to win the ‘Best Design and Layout’ category thanks to Ali’s major redesign of the publication. The judges commended the outstanding design of the magazine; commenting on its high standard of layout, typography and brave use of white space and imagery to make the pages stand out.

Up to 80 schools entered the awards this year and 30 schools were nominated in the various categories.

Given that this is the first year The Manchester Grammar School has entered, the boys have done tremendously well.

Cheadle Hulme School’s ‘Comedy Class’ raises £19,000 for charity

Cheadle Hulme School (CHS) enjoyed a night of witty words and laugh-out-loud limericks at The Comedy Store Manchester recently. The event, sponsored by Living

Ventures, raised £19,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust/Made From Manchester in memory of former student Callum Ballantine. Callum died from cancer aged 19 in December 2015, and devoted the last year of his life to raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust through his Made From Manchester t-shirt fashion line.

Comic novices from the school community received top training from their very own professional comedy mentors in preparation for delivering 10 minutes of rib-tickling humour before a 300-strong audience.

Assisted by TV funny man and Comedy Class MC John Thomson and Phoenix Nights and Benidorm star Ted Robins, the line-up of novice stand-ups included Cheadle Hulme School Head Lucy Pearson, BBC North West Tonight presenter Roger Johnson, Chief Executive of JMCL Consulting Ltd. Jonathan Michael, CHS parent Simon Gleave plus Callum’s close friend and Old Waconian Zach Sadri.

Opening act Zach took to the stage with a side-splitting routine about his multicultural upbringing before being joined on stage by his professional mentor Katie Mulgrew.

The event was brought to a close with stand-up from CHS Head Lucy about her experience of growing up with siblings and was followed by a bustling aftershow party at Spinningfields’ bar Artisan.

German Teacher of the Year

Jessica Houghton – or Frau Houghton as she is known to pupils at The King's School – has been named German Teacher of the Year. The award was given to the popular and innovative Head of German at King’s by a range of revered Anglo-German institutions, including the German Embassy, the Goethe-Institut and the Department for Education.

Jessica, who is a powerful advocate for improving language learning in UK education, scooped the prestigious title after being named as one of the top 10 German teachers in the country.

Jessica said: “The maxim of ‘having fun while learning’ is paramount. Our pupils really enjoy the opportunities

available to them in the German department such as the Märchentheater Club, as this allows them a meaningful context in which to use their language skills while enjoying themselves. It is the best fun in the world working with young people; their enthusiasm is infectious and it is a privilege to teach them at this formative stage in their

lives.” She added: “According to The British Council, 45% of UK businesses rate German as the most sought-after language, yet only 6% of the UK adult population possess a working level of the language. This will surely give our pupils with German a distinct advantage in the future.”

Dr Simon Hyde: The King’s School Macclesfield Relaxing over a cuppa amidst the end-of-term flurry, personable Simon states: “I wanted this job, not because King’s was both my father’s and my old school, but despite it. It’s a dream. I have a ready-made identity both inside and outside King’s. After all, schools aren’t just about education, they’re about people, pastoral care and community. And here, individuals can develop whatever their talents may be.”

Simon aims to challenge pupils to aspire, work hard and achieve; to develop lively, enquiring minds and foster a friendly, polite and caring community. He hopes to help parents too in raising wellrounded individuals who appreciate their privilege. Volunteering is encouraged. Last year, King’s raised over £30,000 for charitable causes, including The Christie and the Destiny Garden School in Kenya. Simon says: “Presently, we have 100 bursary pupils. I’d love more money in the ‘pot’ so we can offer more youngsters the King’s experience.”

A proud professional who chose his métier over academe, Simon is a stickler for quality teaching. He regards children as “bundles of potential” whom teachers are duty-bound to develop. For him, three years of classroom history and politics highlighted the changes King’s required. Consequently, the school day was extended at both ends and periods upped to six a day. The curriculum was revised and IT facilities updated. And this year, ISI Inspector Simon and his staff reaped their due rewards with an all-round ISI ‘excellent’ rating – and no, he did not conduct the inspection!

In 2011, modern history specialist Dr Simon Hyde returned to Macclesfield as Head of The King’s School, the 514-year-old alma mater he had left for Oxford in 1982. Times had changed. The former direct grant boys’ grammar had turned co-educational.

Its 1,250 pupils – aged from 3 to 19 years – had lessons on three town centre sites, plus sports in Prestbury. There was serious talk of amalgamation and relocation to Prestbury. Simon, a proven mover and shaker with talent, commitment and insider knowledge of Macclesfield and King’s, was the man to deliver.

Presently, Simon has left the chalkface to focus on planning King’s eventual move. Out of hours, he is still on-call from the Head’s house nearby for school and civic duties, including the Macclesfield Forum. It is a million miles removed from his own disastrous first day in 1975. Fresh from the local primary, and too petrified to speak out, the youngster missed his name on the roll call. The hall emptied. Simon stood quaking, alone and forlorn – till his form master yanked him unceremoniously into class. Did it put him off King’s? Never.

Human Appeal: 25 years of saving and transforming lives

The Manchester-based charity Human Appeal, which last year raised £30m to deliver help and support to millions of the most vulnerable people in 25 countries across the world, has marked a quarter of a century of tireless devotion to those in desperate need.

Human Appeal began in 1991; a group of students in a small one-bedroom flat, deciding to take emergency aid to Sudan during the devastative East Africa drought and launch an orphan sponsorship programme. Today, the charity has become a major player alongside United Nations agencies and NGOs in saving lives and bringing aid and succour to the victims of natural and man-made disasters. Where there has been darkness and desperation – whether through earthquake, flood, famine, hunger and disease or war, oppression and terror – the charity's founders have lit a torch of hope.

After Ramadan, Human Appeal will move to larger headquarters in Cheadle; its 120 dedicated staff having outgrown the charity's current base in Fallowfield. In recent years, their efforts have achieved remarkable success; increasing donations almost tenfold and delivering aid programmes – from safe water projects to initiatives encompassing education, health and sustainable livelihood schemes – on a greater and wider scale than ever before.

The charity celebrated its 25th anniversary at the launch of its Ramadan Campaign at St. George's Hall in Westminster, London.

The event was attended by distinguished figures from the media and cross-party politics, including Channel 4's Jon Snow, Labour Shadow Health Secretary Diane Abbott MP, senior Conservatives Baroness Warsi and Sir Alan Duncan MP, Liberal Democrat Lord Purvis of Tweed and the SNP’s Leader in the House of Commons Angus Robertson MP. A few weeks later, at Manchester's Palace Hotel, the legendary Brazilian footballer Pelé was guest of honour at another Human Appeal anniversary event, which raised over £70,000 for Empire of Children – a project that aims to provide shelter, protection and a future for children living rough on the streets of Dakar in Senegal and vulnerable to hunger, child trafficking, slavery, forced begging and sexual abuse. Human Appeal CEO Othman Moqbel said: "We are honoured and thankful that Pelé came to support us, to help Human Appeal give these children hope of a better tomorrow.”

Mr Moqbel, who joined Human Appeal in 2010, believes that, above all else, the charity's most important work is the delivery and implementation of aid projects to its beneficiaries (who reached 5.3 million in 2015). "We are here because of them," stressed Moqbel, "and our main focus is on taking care of vulnerable people with dignity and respect."To do this, we try to empower local communities to help themselves rather than just delivering aid and then leaving. When delivering programmes, we train and employ local people and buy from local markets. "Obviously food and

water aid is vital, but it's not just about that. Recently, we opened a sewing factory in Lebanon for £1m, providing employment for widows to work there. They want to work, acquire skills and earn money to be self-sufficient. We train them, give them material, and then they sell what they produce."

Similar sustainable development projects have seen Human Appeal plant tens of thousands of olive trees and help hundreds of farmers in several areas of the West Bank. Human Appeal has developed honey bee farms in Azad Kashmir and Jerusalem, provided impoverished families in North-West Pakistan with birds and seeds to start poultry farms, developed orchards and given livestock management training in the same regions.

The charity has been active in many of the world's most troubled places since its inception; providing emergency relief in Afghanistan in 2002, helping 500,000 tsunami victims in Indonesia and Sri Lanka in 2004, and providing aid after the earthquakes of Haiti and Nepal.

In response to the ongoing Syrian crisis, Human Appeal provided food parcels for internally displaced people (IDPs); distributing more than 1,000 tons of flour monthly to bakeries in Syria. This intervention was made possible thanks to a partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and reached 3,652,250 beneficiaries. In total, Human Appeal distributed 15,000 tonnes of flour in Syria last year and supported 3,839,319 direct beneficiaries. The charity has also built two ‘safe villages’ in Aleppo, provided hospital equipment in northern Syria and education for 1,200 children. In summary, Human Appeal has supported over 4 million direct beneficiaries in the country.

In Lebanon, they too have helped Syrian refugees to earn an independent living and, additionally, been active in helping Syrian refugees in Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Jordan and Lebanon.

The charity recognises that the humanitarian tragedy is far from over, and the need to keep doing whatever they can to help.

Mr Moqbel attributes the charity's growing success to the strengthening of its field officers and the dedication of the people at its headquarters: "We have a very talented group of innovative and creative people gathered here as one family. It's not a nine to five job; we respond to need wherever and whenever that need arises."

As for the future, he added: "I think we still have the potential for growth. We are opening new offices in Europe and looking at options across the Atlantic. Sadly, we see that the crises are increasing, not decreasing."

Stamford Ensemble Only a select few towns in the UK can boast their very own professional orchestra.

Altrincham is now one of them.

Stamford Ensemble was formed in July 2015 by local oboist Andrew Pettit and Halle cor anglais player Tom Davey from Hale. Comprising other Halle members, freelancers and ex-Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) students – all donating their services for charity – Stamford Ensemble is conducted by Tom, also a film and television composer, and managed by Andrew, head of music at a Bolton secondary school. Nick Johnson’s revamped Market House, which has become the throbbing heartbeat of Alty, has hosted Stamford Ensemble’s five critically-acclaimed sell-out shows, each raising over £1,800 for Nepal-Oxfam, Unicef, Macmillan, Music in Kenya and Barnado’s.

Players and punters alike benefit from a relaxed and convivial environment, far removed from concert hall formality and stress. Rather than being stuck to your seat or starchily dressed, you are free to wander to the bar and sup in time to the music. Melodies which enchant have captured the hearts of discerning locals, but there is more to this brainchild’s success than meets the eye… and ear.

Andrew, one of Tom’s former RNCM students, had felt for some time that Altrincham would appreciate a high-quality orchestra: “Altrincham is rich in history but poor in musical culture. Church concerts work well but don’t create a following.

I tried but couldn’t extend the scope of our original chamber group. Then along came the Market House.

Its owner Nick wanted his space to be used for as many purposes as possible, music included. Knowing the venue is closed to the public on Mondays, and that Monday is also the Halle’s day off, we sensed we’d struck lucky!

Consequently, our concerts and afternoon rehearsals are planned for Mondays – and everyone’s happy.”

Meanwhile, musicians continue to join the ensemble and, for its May 2016 concert, the orchestra swelled from the initial dozen players to 56, a tight squeeze in the 180-capacity venue!

Stalwart cellist Danny Norbury commented: “It’s great to contribute and raise money for charity doing something I love.”

You may well attribute the area’s rapturous uptake of Stamford Ensemble to its great sound, its casual approach or even its good timing in finding the Market House.

But Andrew and Tom know better.

Stamford Ensemble’s appeal lies in its communal identity. This is Altrincham’s very own classical band – and that’s precisely what Pettit and Davey always intended.

Smartwatches for smart occasions

When you think of smartwatches, you probably think of the Apple Watch or its Android equivalents, but the concept has in fact been around for many years before either were created. By definition, a smartwatch is a wristwatch that performs additional computing functionality beyond simply telling the time. So, if you had one of those calculator watches back in the 80s, then you were ahead of the trend.

Many people’s first brush with smartwatch technology will have been through sport. As a cyclist and a runner, I have for many years been using sports watches from Polar, Suunto and Garmin that include heart rate monitors, GPS and, more recently, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to measure and analyse performance. My latest one is the Garmin Fenix 3, which is arguably the world’s most advanced sports smartwatch. It has more computing power than my tiny brain, and I’m nowhere near taking full advantage of the breadth of its functionality.

It’s perfect for the outdoor adventurer: it can navigate, help you train and recover, sync with other sports equipment and mobile apps, predict the weather… it can probably cook your dinner too, but I haven’t got that far in the user manual yet.

But there’s one problem. What about when you’re not on a sporting adventure? What about when you’re dandying around town in a handmade shirt and Savile Row suit? You don’t want a massive digital sports watch with rubber strap spoiling your look.

That’s why there’s a growing market in posh smartwatches: those that combine smart technology with Swiss horological tradition. The first time I saw the Withings Activité, I had to have one. It’s nowhere near as clever or as accurate as the Garmin – all it can do is monitor your steps during the day and your sleep patterns at night – but that’s more than enough for people who simply like to keep an eye on their health and look fancy while they’re doing it. It syncs with an iPhone app to record your basic fitness data but, most importantly, it’s a beautiful timepiece.

Designed in Paris and made in Switzerland, it has a calf leather strap, sapphire glass and a classic round analogue dial. It doesn’t even have a crown or any buttons because you set the time using your phone via Bluetooth.

Just don’t ask me if I’d choose between the Withings and the Garmin.

I don’t think I could part with either.

DRIVERS AND RIDERS

I’ve ranted on previous occasions about the unpleasant attempts of certain media to stir up a ‘motorists versus cyclists’ divide. The divide doesn’t exist: almost all of us are both. We simply need to be considerate for fellow humans on our busy roads (which are paid for out of everyone’s taxes: ‘road tax’ was abolished in 1937!)

I, for example, am a lifelong cyclist who happens to love cars. Most of my mates in Stockport Clarion Cycling Club will talk passionately about cars in the pub; and pretty much every car lover will have at least one bike in the garage.

Last time I made this point, I was talking admiringly about carmakers’ efforts to target the cycling market, particularly Škoda’s sponsorship of the Tour de France and the excellent rider-friendly vehicles it continues to develop with the sport in mind.

Since then, plenty more car manufacturers have woken up to the power of the Lycra-clad pound. In fact, a recent study by the London School of Economics estimated that cycling contributed around £3 billion to the UK economy. No wonder car designers are paying attention to the needs of riders.

In the last month alone, I’ve enjoyed two car marketing campaigns that directly targeted cyclists.

Most recently, I attended the wonderful Eroica Britannia, a festival of classic cycling in Bakewell, Derbyshire, where the main sponsor was Maserati, showcasing its new Levante SUV on the basis that it is an ideal vehicle for the connoisseur of the sport.

Maserati supporting a festival for bike obsessives was a smart move. The luxury car brand and the cyclists crowding its pavilion have a lot in common. Maserati’s ambassador, the retired professional time trial champion David Millar, talked about the values of road cycling that have captivated such a rapidly-growing fan base: crossing great distances with speed and elegance, and the desire for the latest fancy kit.

Over in Italy, meanwhile, I was impressed by Honda’s decision to debut some new bike-friendly gadgetry for its latest Civic Tourer at the legendary Giro d’Italia. The Giro is one of the world’s oldest and most gruelling bike races, for which Honda is the official sponsor and supplier of support cars.

The estate version of the popular Civic will soon be available with an innovative in-car bicycle rack, which enables the transport of up to two full-size bicycles within the load bay, and improves security, safety and fuel efficiency compared to a roof or rear-mounted rack.

So, are you after a practical way of getting from A to B, or are you nerdishly obsessed with performance and technology? Are you a cyclist or a motorist? I’m all of those. I think a lot of us are.
