HELLO We hope you’ve had a great start to 2018. The last three months of the year are always manic at Salutions HQ, and 2017 was no different. No sooner had we come back from our summer break, and we were straight into our Winter Ball and a plethora of invites. Not that we’re complaining.

A highlight of 2017 (and a regular event in our calendar) was the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital charity lunch, Sparkle in the City, which raised an amazing £35,000 for the rehabilitation of young patients with burns injuries treated at the hospital. Read all about it on page 9.

This year looks set to be another packed with exciting charitable events. First up, the Lowry Hotel in association with Maggie’s Manchester is hosting a unique costume ball on 10th March. The event is based on one of the region’s most glamorous historical events. Back in 1828, North-West philanthropists attended an extravagant ball at the Assembly Rooms to raise money for local charity. The scene was captured by artist Arthur Perigal in his painting A Fancy Dress Ball and is a social record of ‘The cream of Manchester’ society. More info on page 10.

LOCAL NEWS Christmas lunch raises thousands for hospital’s young burns patients

Held at The Midland in Manchester, the event was sponsored by Selfridges & Co. Manchester and hosted by Key 103 breakfast presenter and patron for the charity Mike Toolan, who welcomed 250 guests on the day.

Guests were treated to entertainment from ‘Girl on Sax’ May Crick and swing and jazz singer Paul Pashley, and fashion retailer to the stars Selfridges & Co. showcased their new collection with a festive fashion show.

Guests also had the opportunity to do some gift shopping from Selfridges’ boutique Christmas stalls.

There were some amazing prizes up for grabs in the raffle and auction, including a VIP meet and greet with rock band The Script, a signed Roger Federer shirt, and a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce experience.

There were also chances for guests to win a fabulous 9ct stacker set rose, white and yellow gold claw eternity diamond ring, courtesy of Precious Jewels UK. All money raised on the day will support the hospital’s Children’s Burns Camp, which is run by the specialist Burns Unit team. Burns injuries can require years of

painful treatments and aftercare, and children can face many problems adapting to their scars, rebuilding their selfconfidence and reintegrating into a society that isn’t always kind to people who look different. The aim of the camps is to support rehabilitation and improve self-esteem in burn-injured children.

Selfridges model

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity has hosted its annual Christmas lunch, Sparkle in the City, raising an incredible £35,000 to help the rehabilitation of young patients with burns injuries.

Eve and Natalie Senior

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital led the treatment of children affected by the horrific events at the Manchester Arena last May. One of those children was 15year-old Eve Senior, who suffered multiple shrapnel wounds as well as burns to her legs. Eve and her mum, Natalie, were special guests attending the charity lunch.

Sharing her emotional story, Natalie thanked the hospital for everything they did for her family and told guests of the difference charitable support will make to poorly patients treated at the hospital.

Natalie Senior said: “The staff we met at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital were nothing short of amazing; from the first night when Eve was admitted to A&E, straight through to her being assessed and admitted onto the Burns Unit the day after the attack. Eve underwent several operations at the hospital to remove over 16 pieces of shrapnel from her legs and shoulder, and was treated for a nasty burn at the top of one of her legs, which needed specialist care.”

The support of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity means that the hospital can provide additional resources that make life easier for patients and their families.

Rohingya refugee influx inspires local aid

Following a recent trip to Myanmar, Aneel Mussarat, a successful businessman from Hale, together with several of his friends, has launched a charitable organisation to help those affected by ongoing conflict in the country

Aneel and the group visited Myanmar to see first-hand the plight of the Rohingya people and the overwhelming challenges they face every day. Their time on the ground was humbling and highlighted the sheer level of support that is required to help restore humanity there. The charity, the Rafay Mussarat Foundation, will further expand on what they have already achieved in Myanmar, providing international relief throughout the world to communities in need.

“On our recent visit to Myanmar, we were deeply shocked and saddened to witness the terrible conditions faced by the Rohingya people who have been displaced,” explains Aneel. “The situation is deplorable, with many left destitute and segregated from a country that now classes them as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

“While there, we were given the opportunity to help the Bangladesh army distribute food to some 17,000 people and, though the crisis was horrific to witness, we feel blessed to have been able to help. As such, we hope our recently launched charity, the Rafay Mussarat Foundation, will go some way to offering the long-term support that’s needed to help restore peace for the Rohingya people.”

– JADE ENGLISH – feeling the fear, and doing it anyway

We talk to star of The Apprentice Jade English about her life-changing TV experience and how she plans to help others find career happiness…

Jade English isn’t like most interviewees. For starters, she asks you questions and treats you like an old friend. Despite losing out on a £250,000 investment from Lord Sugar (she was ‘fired’ in week 10), you can’t help thinking that, with such openness and generosity, her future’s going to be as bright as her smile.

A crazy year “Before applying, I was in a bit of a rut,” admits Manchester-based Jade. “My job was OK but it wasn’t satisfying my soul. I applied and stuck a cheque for £250k on my ceiling and visualised it every day. Before I knew it, I was in the house in London, it was crazy.

No phones, no social media, you couldn’t even read books.”

The Broadcast Journalism graduate describes the series 13 experience as ‘magical’. She says Lord Sugar is “exactly what he’s like on TV – you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of him!” and, of Karren Brady, “it was great to be in the company of such an inspirational woman”.

Was having the famous finger pointed toward her as awful as it looks?

“Winning and investment would have been great,” replies Jade, “but just taking part changed my outlook on life entirely – it made me realise what I really want to do and chase after my dreams.”

Back to business Jade’s business plan centred on a website to help people secure their ideal career through new experiences. Now back in Manchester, and when she’s not doing her media sales day job, Jade is sharing older-than-her-years wisdom via radio

appearances and blogging. She promotes well-being, self-acceptance and overcoming anxiety, with a particular emphasis on empowering young women.

“I encourage people to take a step back and discover what they actually want,” explains Jade. “To be unafraid, try new things and discover a career path that might not make them rich, but will make them happy.

“If nothing else comes from The Apprentice, the messages I receive saying ‘thank you so much for your latest blog, it’s really helped me’ make my down days better.”

New Year’s resolutions Rather than give stuff up for 2018, Jade created a positive to-do list on her blog. She’s already ticked off several entries: “I had my first golfing lesson!” she beams. “I missed the first shot and looked like a right idiot but by the end, people (who’d watched her Instagram videos) were messaging to say ‘you’ve got quite a good swing on you!”

Single, focussed and finally doing what makes her happy, now Jade wants to help others to follow: “Everyone should find what makes them happy. That’s why I’m still seeking investment for my website… so watch this space.”

Gerry Yeung on his year as High Sheriff

Gerry Yeung is a restaurateur, property developer and key player for decades in many aspects of Manchester’s economic, cultural, charitable and educational life However, it was last year that he took on his biggest challenge to date – as High Sheriff of Greater Manchester.

Appointed personally by Her Majesty the Queen last March, in accordance with a centuries old tradition called the Pricking of the Lites, marking with a silver bodkin one of three names presented on a piece of parchment by the Duchy of Lancaster.

Gerry says: "I am learning a great deal about the county's people and its organisations, the good work that they do and their achievements.

Although the role of High Sheriff is now largely symbolic and ceremonial, the honour is England’s oldest secular office after the Crown – dating back more than 1,000 years to the reign of the AngloSaxon King Æthelred the Unready – and was once one of the most powerful.

Magna Carta "Everyone has heard of the Sheriff of Nottingham trying to catch the outlaw Robin Hood," says Gerry. "In the Middle Ages, the High Sheriff was responsible for collecting taxes, maintaining law and order, and carrying out the work of the local authority. The Magna Carta, signed in 1215, has 63 clauses and 27 of them mentioned the High Sheriff."

During 2017 - 18, as High Sheriff, Gerry is required to uphold and lend active support to the principle organs of the constitution – the Royal Family, the judiciary, police and emergency services, as well as local authorities and all recognised faith groups.

Other duties included: assuring the welfare of visiting High Court Judges (attending on them in court and offering them hospitality); supporting and encouraging the voluntary sector; charitable, cultural, educational, ethnic and business communities and supporting the Lord Lieutenant on royal visits and other appropriate occasions.

Royal Family and emotional duties " In my role as High Sheriff, so far I have met eight members of the Royal Family," recalls Gerry, "The Duke of Cornwall, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, the Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and the Duchess of Gloucester. It has been a real privilege."

He adds: "The role is mostly great fun, but sometimes quite challenging and it can, at times, be very emotional."

Amongst the most enjoyable and rewarding duties were drawing his ceremonial sword and leading, in full uniform, the circuitous 10k Manchester Legal Walk from the Crown Court via the University of Manchester. Organised by the North West Legal Support Trust, the event enables everyone to access free legal advice.

The most emotional of duties included laying a wreath at Stockport's war memorial on Remembrance Sunday and attending a Manchester Cathedral service for Remembering Srebrenica, where thousands of Muslims were massacred in the bloody civil war in Bosnia. The most emotional of all was the poignant, painful and respectful Vigil held the day after the Manchester Arena Attack. It was a day overflowing with sadness and reverberating with shock, as the people of Manchester came together in Albert Square to express our sorrow for the victims of the dreadful atrocities carried out in Manchester Arena and our support and solidarity for their families and for Manchester. The Vigil brought together people from all ages, ethnicities, faiths and cultures, bound by emotion and complete unity. In the midst of sorrow was pride, passion, defiance and the true diversity of Manchester.

Holding court By tradition, the High Sheriff receives no

stipend of expenses for carrying out his role, meeting all the costs from his own pocket, including entertaining High Court Judges.

"I am delighted to report," smiles Gerry, "that all the High Court Judges enjoy Chinese food – especially if the accompanying French wine is from a good vintage." Gerry, who describes himself as a Chinese Mancunian, was born in Guangzhou (Canton) and spent his childhood in Hong Kong before coming to Manchester as a teenager.

“I’m a sheriff from the Wild East not the Wild West!” he joked on his appointment.

Yang Sing Gerry completed his education in the UK and, with his elder brother Harry, joined the family business, the Yang Sing in Manchester’s Chinatown, at its inception.

The restaurant, which went on to build a nationwide reputation, has now passed to the family’s third generation, Harry's daughter, Bonnie, and sons Yin Heng and Yin Ting.

As a property developer, Gerry rescued one of Stockport’s most historic buildings from virtual ruin. He bought the neglected Grade II-listed Mauldeth Home, a Georgian villa built by an American merchant in 1830 and which became the residence of James Prince Lee, the first Bishop of Manchester, in the 1850s.

In 1880, the house was converted into a hospital and an annexe (now Camellia House) was added. Later still, the buildings, surrounded by Heaton Moor Golf Club, were used as an old people’s home before being abandoned by the NHS for 6 years.

Gerry restored both buildings. Mauldeth Home is now the residence of the Chinese Consul General and Camellia House is home to Gerry, his wife Joanne and their two children.

OBE Gerry became the first Chinese President of Manchester Chamber of Commerce in 2003 and in the same year was awarded an OBE. He became a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester in 2008.

He has served his adopted city in a variety of roles with MOSI, The Prince’s Trust and MIDAS, and as a Governor of University of Manchester and of Withington Girls' School.

He has received honorary doctorates from Salford and Manchester Metropolitan universities and in 2016 received the University of Manchester’s Medal of Honour.

What Manchester means “I was honoured and delighted to have been chosen to carry out the unique role of High Sheriff by the Queen,” says Gerry.

“My personal experience of life in Manchester and the UK has been nothing but positive. Manchester is a special place, which is big enough to be culturally and commercially exciting and small enough for everybody to work together. I have found that the words that are often used to describe British values – justice, fairness, tolerance and liberty – are all true.

“We have a society with many fine institutions and traditions as well as one with great diversity, generosity of spirit and civic pride. Manchester has been very good to me and my family.”

Exotic Indonesia

Pristine beaches, bewildering temples and the home of super spas render Indonesia an intoxicating choice for the luxury traveller, reports Jill Nash When most people hear of Indonesia, they think of Bali, but few realise that there is a staggering archipelago of 17,508 diverse islands to explore. Obviously, Bali stands out as the path well-trodden due to its mountain scenery and sumptuous spas, but many travellers are exploring the pristine beaches of Lombok, the culture and art of Java or the wildlife of Komodo National Park. Like the people on Indonesia’s many islands, the culture is a wonderful mix. It is a tapestry that reflects the 300 separate ethnic groups and is clearly expressed by the varied (and intricate) architecture, temple ceremonies, dance, prayers and spiritual offerings of food and flowers, and ornate Buddhist monuments. It is undoubtedly the locals that really set this destination apart – charming, warm, friendly and genuine – and make it a pleasure for everyone visiting.

Indonesia offers escapism, exceptional luxury and is entirely affordable. It is the political, economic and geographical centre of Indonesia and has a blend of historic and cultural influences that date back many centuries. The island boasts immense beauty; from peaceful villages and a beautiful, fertile countryside to smoking volcanoes and ancient monuments.

Java's Borobudur is one of the continent's most impressive sites, surviving damage from volcanoes, terrorist bombs and hordes of tourists. Built from two million stone blocks in the form of a massive symmetrical stupor literally wrapped around a small hill, this colossal Buddhist monument remains as enigmatic and beautiful as it must have been 1200 years ago. world's most complete collection of Indonesian artefacts and its Hindu-Javanese collection rivals that of the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden (Holland), reputedly the finest in the world. Adjacent to the museum is the National Library, where you’ll find over 700,000 books, manuscripts and periodicals (old and new) covering everything Indonesian. It’s worth a visit if you are staying in or near Jakarta.

Java offers visitors a vivid and rewarding experience made up of an intensely striking land and culture; a tapestry of religions, historical influences and splendid landscapes – little wonder they call it the 'Garden of the East'.

Best places to stay Amanjiwo. Spend a night at one with nature – it may be a tad expensive but well worth splashing out. This quiet retreat is surrounded by volcanoes and verdant plantations, and there’s a luxurious infinity pool to cool off in after a day’s sightseeing.

The majority of villages remain untouched by the influence of visitors and most people are still involved in the day-to-day tasks of farming rice, tobacco, soybeans, corn and peanuts. A few villages scattered through the island are known for high-quality pottery and hand weavings, which can be great buys for visitors.

Kuta Beach (not to be confused with the other Kuta Beach in Bali) is also known as Putri Nyale Beach, is situated on the south coast of Central Lombok and is perhaps one of the most scenic and unspoiled beaches in this part of Indonesia. The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air) are renowned dive destinations and as such attract stopover tourists seeking open-water courses.

Best places to stay Oberoi. This hotel lies opposite the three Gili Islands, which are renowned for their colourful coral reefs and dazzling tropical sea life. The dry season from April to October is the best time to visit as some activities and road travel can be difficult during the rainy season. This is also when most of the festivals take place, for example, the Bali Arts Festival in June and July.

Stacey Forsey is, it appears, unstoppable

um, wife, artist, charity fundraiser and star of The Real Housewives of Cheshire… now she’s added the creation of affordable fashion and must-have items for the home to her impressive CV, all of which complement her oft-exhibited artwork and reflect her personal style.

We caught up with Stacey to find out more…

ART INSPIRED BY LIFE Away from her starring role in the popular ITVBe show, and in addition to her work for charities close to her heart, Stacey’s great passion is art. Her work is inspired by her life past and present (everything from heady

nights at the Haçienda to trips to foreign shores) and has been exhibited at major galleries across the North West. It’s bold, emotive, colour-led and now made more accessible courtesy of a series of limited editions prints and a complementary range of t-shirts, candles and cushions.

“Having had such an amazingly positive response to both my art and personal style,” says Stacey, “I wanted to make my art more accessible, to have them on a smaller scale for the home. Plus, I am always wanting to create something new – my brain never stops!”

LIMITED EDITION PRINTS Taking centre stage in the new collection are small-scale versions of Stacey’s art – only 100 prints of each her current pieces are available.

“I know that due to the size of the original pieces, they sit perfectly alone in a villa in St. Tropez or a listed building in London,” explains Stacey, “but to have them on a smaller scale in your home is different.

I wanted to help people style the prints, so I brought out the colour, added luxury and designed velvet cushions. Each cushion is handmade to order in the UK. The candles – crafted in the UK from hand-poured soya wax and available in pomegranate or freesia and pear – sit alongside my art beautifully or equally stand alone.”

FASHION STATEMENTS Not only can your home showcase Stacey’s style, now you can too, with a set of four striking logo t-shirts suited to any season.

“I wanted to design something I could wear!” says Stacey, “I’m not a fashion designer so I decided it’s important to concentrate on what will never go out of fashion – for me, that’s a slogan tee. I live in slogan tees and you can dress them up or down.”

WHAT STACEY DID NEXT A second range of more ‘adventurous’ t-shirts – all designs handdrawn by the artist – will launch this autumn. Meanwhile, Stacey is busy painting a new collection (which means more prints!) and, with the help of her young daughter Grace, working on series of exciting dessert recipes for those who suffer (like Stacey) with food intolerances.

llow me to explain. I came home last Wednesday, a day when his Lordship was supposedly ‘working from home’, to find my beautiful back garden had been pegged out with miles of string to resemble an ugly, giant noughts and crosses board. Apparently, my dear husband had got bored writing his 2018 business plan and whilst surfing the internet somehow stumbled upon a self-sufficiency website, which convinced him that our entire garden needed to be turned over to ‘grow your own’. Full-on, 1970s Good Life style. Chickens, pigs, goats, the lot.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love growing some of my own food, but I certainly don’t want to become Felicity Kendal to his Richard Briers. I want my garden to be a place where I can relax with a glass of wine

in the evening and invite friends round for an impromptu BBQ. I want to move the TV there over Glastonbury weekend and watch the kids cringe in embarrassment as the oldies relive our ‘yoof’, dancing drunkenly in our wellies with wet wipes tucked in our back pocket for authenticity. I most certainly do not want to look out over a Surbiton-like homestead.

Superfoods as medicine I wanted to get across just how powerful the foods that Mother Nature has provided can be at not only treating a wide range of health conditions but in preventing them also.

Superfoods can actually be our best form of medicine and I am proof that they really do work (as are all of my family and many of my friends).

Putting passion onto paper I have never really had any aspirations to be an author, so this book came as quite a surprise. I was actually approached by the publishers Pen and Sword Books to write a different title, but I wasn´t keen on the idea, so said no. During our discussions, I obviously must have rambled on about superfoods as, a few days later, they came back to me and asked if I would be interested in writing a book based on this subject. Because this is an area in which I have a lot of experience and I am truly passionate about it, I didn’t hesitate to accept and so the process began.

Something different for readers Very quickly I had the layout of the book in my mind and I put fingers to keys and began to write. The hardest part was probably narrowing down the number of foods I could include, as there are so many natural foods and products with amazing health benefits. Maggie Keswick-Jencks was keen for cancer patients like herself to let their love of life supersede their fear of dying. Her legacy lies in today’s thriving network of 22 eponymous UK-wide centres opened from 1996 onwards, the year after she died. Our most recent, and 22nd centre, was opened in London. Each Maggie’s Centre is entirely independently funded and custom built near a cancer hospital or treatment centre to offer anyone and everyone affected by cancer professional help, caring practical advice and invaluable chill-out time.

Sinéad Collins manages Manchester Maggie’s, the 19th centre, which opened near The Christie in April 2016 and last year welcomed over 15,000 patients, families, friends and workers. They drop in to relax, chat, have a snack, attend one of many professionally-run courses or simply wander to the garden through Norman Foster’s stunning, airy, wood-beamed building – the architect’s first in this his city of birth.

A relative latecomer to the profession, Sinéad took up nursing in her 30s, qualified in 2002 and went straight to The Christie.

She stayed for 13 years, ultimately

specialising in pelvic oncology surgery. Her clinical and medical experience, plus her ongoing years lecturing at The University of Manchester, have strengthened her passion, insight and resolve to be of help. Her family had been touched by cancer and she had always wanted to know more.

At Maggie’s, guidance is on hand for bereaved families and friends, people living with cancer and others living beyond cancer. Having completed treatment, it’s not uncommon to feel vulnerable, if not overwhelmed, by the positive yet daunting prospect of readjusting to normality.

Sinéad oversees five full-time professionals, three fundraisers and over 20 volunteers providing much-needed attention, information, fun and, above all, succour in times of need. This entails more than clinical expertise, as Sinéad explains:

Emotional support, advice on hair loss, financial tips and information on approved complementary medicines are readily available. And, as not everyone diagnosed with cancer is fully in the know, Maggie’s provides newcomers with a three-hour introduction of what to expect when undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapies and the common technical terms used.

“Nurses are trained and socialised to work holistically. Experience as ‘advanced’ practitioners makes us a safe pair of hands clinically. But, ultimately, it’s that relationship with patients which drives people into nursing. It’s a vocation which never leaves you, and my job brings all this to the fore. Cancer’s no longer the death sentence my grandparents were scared to mention. Fortunately, there’s great emphasis on research and moving forward, but we know people need more than medicine alone.”

Visitors refer themselves or just drop in following NHS or word-of-mouth recommendations. A warm welcome and a cuppa are guaranteed as you walk in.

“Keep talking,” Sinéad advises those affected by cancer. “Don’t dance around any subject.

Get the facts, so you know what you’re dealing with. Be realistic – truth isn’t a stick to beat someone with, it’s a starting point.”

– Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month – spotting the signs Ovarian cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer death in British women, after breast, lung and bowel cancer

Each year in the UK, there are approximately 7,400 cases of ovarian cancer. This is roughly 142 women each week. Most cases of cancer of the ovary develop in women over the age of 50. The development of ovarian cancer is not fully understood, but the most widely held view is that it results from repeated damage and repair of the surface of the ovary caused by ovulation, which occurs every month in most women who have not gone through the menopause. However, one in 10 ovarian cancers (10%) are caused by an inherited gene. Inherited genes that increase the risk of ovarian cancer include BRCA1 and BRCA2; these genes also increase the risk of breast cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to let women know that they can do positive things to improve their health and that early detection can make a massive difference to the success of treatment.

It is really important that women are aware of what is normal for them, so that they recognise any changes. If you know your body, then you can act early if something out of the ordinary happens.

Symptoms to be aware of: • • • • • • • •

Persistent stomach pain and bloating Increased abdominal size Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Weight loss Passing urine more often Back pain Changes in your bowel habits (diarrhoea or constipation) Feeling tired all the time

These symptoms are quite common in many other conditions, so it is far more likely that they will be due to other less serious problems. However, because ovarian cancers can develop without many symptoms, it is important to get any new symptoms checked out. Anyone who

experiences the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer, or are worried that they may have the inherited gene, should visit their GP who can then refer them to a specialist if necessary.

What is sexual health and why is it so important?

Sexual health is one of those topics that people tend not to talk about and the information available is limited. The following is a short article by Dr Rashid Bani BSc (Hons), MBBS, DRCOG to provide you with an insight into this subject.

Sexual health covers any area affecting sexual function and reproduction, including its physical, mental and emotional aspects. A long time ago (over 25 years), the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed: "There exist fundamental rights for the individual, including freedom from organic disorders, diseases and deficiencies that interfere with sexual and reproductive function."

Obviously, it is hard to disagree with the above but, unfortunately, we are not there yet. Often, the reason behind this is a lack of understanding and, in many cases, the limited appropriate treatment options available.

What are the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

There are over 20 types of STDs. The most common are: chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, HPV, syphilis and trichomoniasis.

Who can be affected? Both men and women can be affected, and often more severely for women. An STD during pregnancy can cause serious health problems for the baby.

To a large extent, it is politeness and discretion that prevent discussion of these issues and create a barrier to WHO’s vision.

When a sexual concern exists, it is important to address it with your partner and also with a medical professional.

How do we test for an STI? The tests are simple to perform and involve a urine or a blood sample (taken either from a vein in the arm, a pin prick from the finger or, very occasionally, a swab).

Once samples are taken, they are promptly processed, making sure the results are available as soon as possible. A doctor will take a full history and advise on the most appropriate tests for you.

Once results are received, they will be communicated to you by your preferred method.

What is a sexually transmitted infection (STI)? An STI is basically any kind of bacterial or viral infection that can be spread through unprotected sexual contact. STIs need to be accurately diagnosed at an early stage to prevent long-term complications, such as infertility. Many people don't notice symptoms, so it's important to get a check-up if you've had unprotected sex or think you might be at risk.

What treatment is available? The majority of STDs (including those caused by bacteria, yeast or parasites) can be cured with antibiotics. Some – such as HIV – have no cure, but there are treatments available to help with the symptoms and keep the disease under control. Results will be discussed in confidence with you and, if needs be, onward referral to specialist services will be provided.

With the addition of some new team members, including Head Barman Bruno Santos (previously of The Bubble Room), all the elements have come together nicely to make this relaunch a huge success.

When General Manager John Scott joined the team in June 2016 (when his predecessor Ahmet Kurcer retired after almost 30 years at the hotel), it seemed he was the perfect person to guide the growing team through the extensive refurbishment process. Previously at the Best Western Plus Pinewood on Wilmslow, John has been through two refurbishments already, so knows what to expect and how to keep team spirits high in a time of extreme upheaval.

This refurbishment marks the first phase of a 2.5 million refurbishment; the entire redevelopment (with all the bedrooms and function rooms given a similar level of investment) will complete

The new menu is full of well-made British classics. The addition of a Josper Grill to the kitchen has given a new lease of life to Sean’s already incredible dishes. A Josper Grill gives a barbecue taste to some terrific cuts of meat and Sean’s use of flavour means the team are giving customers a taste sensation. Sean has worked at the hotel for almost 12 years now and has been Head Chef for just over three. He was one of the youngest people in the country to achieve the highly impressive three AA Rosettes and has worked hard in previous years to maintain that level of taste, innovation and service. At just 31 years old, Sean is a big selling point for the hotel and people travel far and wide to try his food, especially his famous Sunday lunch. Following an extensive refurbishment, Alderley Edge Hotel has a brand-new bar and restaurant, and a brand-new menu to match.

Set in the picturesque village of Plumley, just outside Knutsford, The Golden Pheasant is a charming country pub and perfect for a family Sunday lunch. With the addition of a feisty two-year-old to our table, the challenge was set to see if this Sunday lunch could beat a home-cooked one.

Browns in Manchester is located in one of the city’s old banks, just off the top of King Street.

The building itself is an absolute triumph, beautifully high ceilings and renovated sympathetically and affectionately. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a very impressive bar – tall, imposing and very well-stocked.

Now an inviting, open and bright space, the restaurant entices you in and makes you want to stay for post-meal drinks too. They have a great new piece of equipment in the kitchen called a Josper Grill, which barbecues meat to perfection.

We started with Seared Shetland Scallops with cabbage, pancetta and apple – the scallops melted in the mouth and the dish was perfectly presented, so pretty! We wanted to try out the Josper Grill, so we ordered the Pork Tomahawk and the 8oz Sirloin of Cumbrian Beef. Both were cooked to absolute perfection and the flavours are a huge credit to Head Chef Sean Sutton. He’s clearly thought this menu through and brought new life to an already great establishment.

We started with a Duck and Orange Pâté, which was smooth, filling and served with delicious crusty bread and chutney. In our opinion, the test of a good Sunday lunch is the roasties, and these – roasted in goose fat – did not disappoint. Served alongside the Roast Sirloin of Beef, creamed potatoes and vegetables, this roast was tasty, moreish and a big hit around the table. A very hungry twoyear-old demolished the children’s portion and asked for more of the tasty gravy – it must be a hit.

The menu is comprised of lots of classic British dishes done well. We started with a Prawn Cocktail with buttered sourdough. It tasted fresh and it was very filling. We’d have been happy without the bread, as the portion size was so big. For our main meals, we chose a Browns Burger and the Slow-cooked Slated Pork Belly. The pork came with a savoury apple pie, green beans and mashed potato, the gravy was just what was needed to bring it all together. Delicious!

We couldn’t manage dessert, as we were stuffed, but we managed to get a lovely table by the open fireplace and relaxed while having a cup of coffee. It was a little cold on our visit, but we will be back to enjoy the huge gardens and play area, perfect for children of any age. They even had a badminton net, however, after eating all that food, we could barely summon the energy to walk to the car! A very good Sunday lunch and at just £16.45, you’d be hard pressed to find a better one in the area.

For dessert, we opted for a liquid version – an espresso martini! It’s dessert, coffee and a cocktail all in one – what more could you want?

We moved into the busy bar area to sip them and we very much enjoyed them. Just a pity we were working the next day.

Normally, we’d then go for dessert, but the cheese board stood out. Five HUGE portions of cheese are enough for two people and, washed down with an incredible bottle of Merlot, we cannot praise the food and drink highly enough.

Well done to the team – we’ve heard brilliant things about your Sunday lunch, so we’ll be back!

Since winning MasterChef back in 2015, Executive Chef Simon Wood has been busy setting up his first restaurant in central Manchester. When he invited us in to try his five-course tasting menu, it’s fair to say we were giddy!

After three years of owning the old Barclays Bank, Justin Orange has taken his time in creating the perfect little eatery in Altrincham, and it shows.

What a stunning transformation of this gorgeous building. There was a very warm welcome and a comfy seat, and we were presented with a very well-thought-out menu.

Store Street Exchange restaurant and Store Street Craft Bar are Manchester's latest food and drink hotspots. They are within walking distance from Piccadilly train station and the former promises simple yet satisfying food.

The menu has everything from burgers and steaks to fish and salads, with a variety of mouth-watering puddings to finish. We started with Bury Black Pudding Fritters, complemented by Stokes brown sauce, and a bowl of warming Rotisserie Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup.

The restaurant itself is industrial but welcoming, and the comfortable booths were the perfect setting for such a treat.

We started with a Thai soup called Tom Kha, bursting with flavour and a great start. Next came a Venison Tartare with a charcoal dust. Sounds strange, but it was divine! We were also quietly enjoying a lovely bottle of Chenin Blanc whilst being served with this incredible menu. Our next course was Seared Scallops with compressed apple, celeriac, black pudding and parsnip crisps – the perfect flavour combination.

The ‘main’ course was a Beef Fillet with ox cheek, a medley of mushrooms and burnt onion. The flavours complemented each other perfectly and we were blown away by the mix of textures.

The dessert was worth the wait, as it was the best dessert either of us have ever tasted. A Chocolate Delice with poached cumquats and a whiskey gel.

Do we even need to say any more?

Absolutely incredible! An absolute MUST for all foodies out there, keep Simon Wood on your radar.

Toast does exactly what it says on the tin, everything is served on toast. That sounds bizarre and like it shouldn’t work but it really does!

We visited for brunch and had plenty to choose from. We opted for a Classic Eggs Royale and a not-so-classic Crumpet, Black Pudding, Eggs and Bacon. Both were exceptional. We love a brunch and this rates highly for both of us. It’s such a lovely warm place to sit and hang out that we lingered for a while and had a few more coffees.

There are also lots of lunch options, all served on toast, and we are already trying to fit in our next visit, so we can sample the Crab and Lime with rocket and coriander. All dishes are served on your choice of bread and gluten-free versions of everything on the menu are available, which is so great to hear!

Make sure you go to Altrincham and try this, trust us, you won’t regret it.

For my main course, I opted for the indulgent Potato Gnocchi with wild mushrooms, baby spinach and garlic – all topped with shaved parmesan and accompanied by a portion of skin-on-fries. My guest selected The Store Street Burger – prime ground beef, Ramsay Ayrshire bacon, Montgomery's Cheddar, club sauce, brioche bun, grain mustard slaw and tiger fries (sweet potato and skin-on-fries).

I couldn’t resist trying a bite myself!

Two Melt-in-the-Middle Chocolate Puddings with salted caramel ice cream provided a delicious finish – rich and creamy, just how desserts should be! In addition to the main menu, there’s Classic Afternoon Tea (which starts at just £17.50) and Cocktail Afternoon Tea for £25. Gluten-free, vegan and children’s versions are also available.

Nat Tofan at Manchester House Up there with the stars

In a contrived three-part television documentary made by the BBC in 2014 called Restaurant Wars – The Battle for Manchester, Aiden Byrne at Manchester House was pitched against Simon Rogan at The French in a supposed race to win a Michelin star. Neither did so and both chefs have since departed from their respective kitchens.

But, in doing so, they made way for two of the country's most exciting talented young culinary guns to be promoted from the ranks.

At the French, Adam Reid took over as head chef at the age of 30. And now Nat Tofan – part of the Manchester House project from the very start – has taken charge, aged just 27. Winning a Michelin star has never depended on having already won one somewhere else.

Ever since the late Living Ventures boss Tim Bacon realised his ambition to open a flagship city centre Michelin-contending restaurant, star chef Aiden has been virtually synonymous with Manchester House. But last September, Aiden (the youngest chef ever to win a Michelin star, when he was 22) announced his departure and his protégé and first lieutenant Nat Tofan stepped up to the plate in a seamless transition.

Precocious culinary talent Now Manchester House has burst into 2018 with a new set of menus and its ‘new’ head chef 's name up in lights. And rightly so, for at the press preview of what lies ahead at Manchester House, there's plenty of evidence that a precocious culinary talent has been given his head.

Born and raised in Nottingham, Nat found his passion through working in his parents' restaurant and at the age of 18 embarked on a career as a chef. He learned the basics as an apprentice chef before joining the brigade at one of Nottingham's leading restaurants.

A year in Paris followed, where Nat continued to build his culinary foundations and in 2011, he moved to Manchester and was a key part of the launch of Australasia, Living Ventures’ high-energy Pan-Asian fine dining restaurant. He worked alongside Aiden Byrne in the development kitchen for six months before launching Manchester House; Nat as a key lieutenant to Aiden in the team. After taking a short sabbatical in 2015, to experience new cultures and flavours, Nat returned to Manchester House as senior sous chef and in September 2017 was appointed head chef.

Legendary tasting menus The new menus offer two or three-course lunches, priced competitively at £24.50 and £29.50 respectively, and a seasonal menu featuring starters for £15, mains from £35 and desserts for £8. Additionally, there’s a spectacular afternoon tea of five savoury and six sweet delicacies for £25 (or £40 with a cocktail flight) and the restaurant's legendary tasting menus.

The tasting menus come either as eight courses for £75 or 12 courses for £95 (vegetarian versions command the same prices), with specially selected wine flights adding £45/£75. It was tasters from these that demonstrated Nat's skilled direction of the army of chefs in Manchester House's huge open theatre kitchen, which is almost as big as the dining area itself.

Even the bread and butter – sublime crusty sourdough with beurre noisette and crushed shards of crispy chicken skin – was a work of art and the ‘chef 's snacks’ were simply brilliant. The Millionaire's Sandwich – layers of foie gras and pistachio – was an exquisite piece of culinary craftsmanship, while Raw Beef with Coal Oil – a clever cheffy trick to introduce barbecue flavours to meat that's never been anywhere near a grill – was served on a mini taco with gloriously gooey egg yolks… superb.

Intriguingly, the last time we'd encountered beef in coal oil was as a course on Simon Rogan's tasting menu at The French – there must be a truce in the restaurant war!

Delicate flavours Our taster of the tasting menu continued with that most regal of fish, turbot. It was perfectly cooked, studded with slivers of razor clam and served with rare, delicately flavoured white soy and tangy verjus.

Dessert produced another piece of culinary magic – a stunning coral-orange Mousse of Sea Buckthorn, smooth and sweet without being cloying and counterpointed by a scoop of lemon yogurt.

The wine flight brought forth some serious stuff, brilliantly matched to each course, hence: Bordeaux blanc from Château Picque Caillou; Puligny Montrachet, a white Burgundy, intriguingly, with the beef; the Loire's finest Pouilly Fumé with the turbot; and a top-class German Rieslaner Auslese with dessert.

Wow.

thick-cut ham and deliciously meaty Portobello mushrooms; pear and British blue cheese; and aubergine with peppers and no cheese. I opted for olive and fiery Roquito peppers – in all honesty, a little too hot to handle for this timid reviewer.

Whether you are veggie, vegan or glutenfree, the small but beautifully formed menu has options for all palates and persuasions.

When you order wine, you’re given an empty glass and directed toward some outward-facing pumps. Being 5ft 3in means I had to stand on my tiptoes to fill up with Merlot, but it feels good not to have to wait for a waiter to request a refill – you just go help yourself! There’s no cutlery either; the pizza is served sliced and ready to eat.

Instructions on the tables advise you to ‘lift up a piece, crack it, fold it, then eat it’.

2017 success

It's safe to say that, as a company, we had a remarkable 2017 and as we have settled into 2018, it’s a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on the year that we had 2017 was particularly significant for us, as this is the year that we celebrated our 15-year anniversary – a monumental achievement for everyone involved, as it would not have been possible without the continued support of our staff, partners and, of course, the local community.

Throughout last year, all of our departments went from strength to strength and this is something we will continue to push into 2018. Our immigration department was a particular success, thanks to our dedicated staff members working closely with the local community and providing regular, free initial consultations to anyone who needed them. Due to the hard work of our staff and the success of the department, we have been able to expand by adding an additional immigration office in London, which will be opening later on this year.

Last year, we were also pleased to have opened new departments, which has allowed us to expand our specialities beyond

If your business has no real value, such as an IT contractor whose income is paid through a limited company (as it is a tax-efficient vehicle through which to pay income), it should not be valued.

Will I have to give my spouse half the value of my business?

Not necessarily. Liquidity, which is how much money can be raised through a business, is an issue that the accountant will also need to comment upon. They should advise how much money the business can afford to pay out without negatively impacting the day-to-day running of the business. They also need to consider the tax consequences of this.

I am a first-time buyer, so do I still have to pay Stamp Duty?

As of 22nd November 2017, the Government announced that any first-time buyers will pay zero Stamp Duty on the first £300,000 on any house purchases up to £500,000. This represents a tax saving of up to £5,000, depending on the purchase price.

Please note that, for joint purchases, both parties must be first-time buyers to benefit.

What does the ban on leasehold sales mean for my property?

In December 2017, the Government announced a ban on leasehold sales of new-build houses, with only a limited number of exceptions. Also, ground rents will be set at zero for all new long leaseholds.

Unfortunately, this will not help existing homeowners subject to such leases, however, the Government has indicated, as part of the proposals, that they are committed to making the process of purchasing the freehold easier, cheaper and faster for existing leasehold owners.

Top sports figures warn of meningitis risk on visit to Manchester schools Thanks to a visit from two top UK sports personalities, students from Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) and The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) learned that young people are among the most at-risk of contracting meningitis.

Former England rugby player and BBC sports commentator Matt Dawson and Olympic gold medalist and former GB hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh were in Manchester to raise awareness of the devastating illness as part of pharmaceutical and healthcare company GSK’s Tackle Meningitis campaign.

A recent GSK survey revealed that, in the North West, understanding of the risk of meningitis among teens remains worryingly low; just one in ten parents and young people aged 14-18 are aware that teenagers are among the most at-risk of contracting the disease. The survey also

highlighted a lack of knowledge about the signs and symptoms of the illness.

During their visit to MHSG and MGS, Matt and Kate met a group of aspiring rugby and hockey players and gave them tips and advice on how to get on in the world of professional sport.

Manchester High School for Girls students Livia Baker from Didsbury and Ella Hampson from Lymm are both playing in the UK Lions Hockey team. At 13, both have a bright future ahead of them in the sport. Livia said: “It was great to be selected to the national team in the autumn, but meeting Matt and Kate today was the icing on the cake!

“Our year group was vaccinated for meningitis earlier this week and, since Matt and Kate’s talk, I appreciate the need for the vaccination much more now that

I am aware of the dangers the disease can pose. I would definitely recommend young people look up meningitis and learn about the symptoms.”

MGS pupil Finn Perls, 12, of Didsbury, said: “I’m a huge rugby fan so it was an amazing experience to meet Matt. He’s an inspiration to myself and other boys who play rugby, so I’ll never forget not only meeting him but hearing him talk about how to spot the signs of meningitis, which means hopefully I will be able to help someone should they contract it.”

MGS pupil Henry Murray, 12, from Altrincham, who is one of the School’s budding hockey players, added: “It was fantastic to meet Kate. She is a brilliant hockey player and it was great experience to talk to her.”

Withington Girls’ School is served up a national food award

Withington Girls’ School has become the first independent school in the North West of England to have achieved a national Food for Life Served Here award.

The certification programme is run by the Soil Association – the UK's leading food and farming charity and organic certification body – and recognises commitment to providing pupils and staff with healthy, nutritionally balanced meals using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Having taken 18 months of planning and preparation work, assessments and a

rigorous inspection, 88% of all WGS meals now conform to best-practice guidelines around fresh preparation, avoidance of preservatives, additives and genetically modified foods, a minimum use of sugar and the use of seasonal ingredients.

The catering team has been trained about the importance of fresh locallysourced produce and the sources of ingredients are being communicated on posters that are on display close to the school’s dining areas.

Sheena Cartledge, who has a degree in catering and hospitality management and has been in post for the past 26 years, said she had been drawn to the Food for Life Served Here programme during a visit to a food exhibition in 2015, but the process had taken some time to complete: “It has been quite an eye-opener,” said Sheena. “We’ve been doing much of this anyway – but we have had to cover a lot of ground and also had to revisit our contracts with all our suppliers to ensure they comply too.”

British Council International School Award success for Alderley Edge School for Girls Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) has been awarded the foundation level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.

The girls’ international work includes participation in Erasmus+. The school has been successfully involved in regular collaborative international projects since 1999, the latest of

Projects ranged from a reading scheme for younger pupils and e-safety to the Romantic Age and a collaborative choir concert.

More than 400 pupils benefitted from transnational visits made between the partner countries during the three-year project, including a visit by the 25-strong German choir to AESG and the Year 7 pupils participating in multimedia activities based on the best-selling book by R. Debating with Edwina Currie at Stockport Grammar Stockport Grammar School’s Debating Society was delighted to welcome former Conservative MP and Junior Health Minister Edwina Currie to take part in one of their regular debates.

The Debating Society holds its meetings in the school library and this one was full to capacity as pupils and staff gathered to hear Edwina Currie debate with Sixth Formers Murray Jallands, Adam Keyworth and Richard Seed. The debate was chaired by Finley Nolan.

The debate took in wide-ranging issues, including economic policy, equality, privatisation, share ownership, the miners’ strike and social housing. Following the Debating Society’s house rules, the discussion was good humoured and informative.

The Debating Society regularly invites external speakers to join them and Ms Currie had kindly responded to a letter from Adam Keyworth. In her closing speech, she stressed the great importance of open debate and discussion in schools.

Pupils at Stockport Grammar have many other co-curricular opportunities to cultivate their debating skills, for example, Model

United Nations – where pupils discuss international issues with children from across the UK and globally – and their own School Council, which develops communication skills and allows pupils a forum to voice their opinions.

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls takes top spot in Together’s enterprise competition The winners celebrate with Together’s judges

Two pupils from Altrincham Grammar School for Girls have scooped the winning prize in an enterprise competition run by specialist finance provider Together, walking away with £2,500 for their school and an iPad each.

All the budding young entrepreneurs who participated had prepared a detailed business plan, with schools running the first round and selecting their winning group, who then presented to the judges at Together in the exciting finale.

Shu Fei Chen and Zara Akhtar are studying business and economics at A-level and gave a compelling presentation of their concept VEALITY – a creative arts therapy centre to help people suffering from mental health issues.

Commercial CEO at Together, Marc Goldberg, who was one of the judges, said: “We were so impressed with all the finalists who took part. The standard was exceptional and the amount of research and level of detail that had gone into the many different business ideas was just incredible. However, VEALITY really stood out, so they were very worthy winners.

Shu Fei said the idea for the non-for-profit organisation had resulted from the statistics that showed one in four people will suffer from some sort of mental health issue in their lifetime. She added that the opportunity had given her more confidence, whilst Zara said it had been “a great experience of how the business world works”.

“I’m very proud also of the group of colleagues here at Together who devised the competition and launched it to schools for the first time this year.”

Fine time for Oxbridge nine It has been another successful year for Cheadle Hulme School, with nine students receiving offers from University of Oxford or University of Cambridge. Of 16 candidates currently in the Sixth Form, 13 were invited for interview and, of those, six secured offers from their Oxbridge choice.

Three students from the Class of 2017 also received offers after deferring a year following their A-levels.

It has been an especially good year for languages, with four students from the

school opting to study Spanish, French and German. From the current year group, history was also a strong choice for Cheadle Hulme School applicants.

The school’s Oxbridge Coordinator, Mrs Lisa Barfoot, said: “I am delighted for the students. For each of them, this achievement represents the culmination of many years’ hard work and dedication to their subject, both inside and outside the classroom.”

The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) has been recognised as one of the best independent sport schools in the North of England by a national magazine. In recognition of its varied sporting programme, the latest issue of School Sport magazine places MGS at number five nationally and number one in the North. The list reflects competitive achievement in a range of sports throughout 2017 and honours those schools that take competition seriously. The list was compiled based on 20 different sports (as opposed to a single one) and more than 120 different national competitions. THE ESTATE IS BACK I’ll admit this is more a personal notion of mine rather than any big collective decision from the car-buying public. In fact, in recent years, the masses seem to have rather turned their backs on estate cars in favour of the SUV. But the estate, station wagon, tourer or shooting brake – whatever you want to call it – will always find favour with a select few. Not just for practicality reasons, but also because nowadays they’re sufficiently different to be the cool alternative.

Look at the new Volvo V90, for example. Now that the Volvo flagship is the XC90 SUV, the big luxury estate is no longer the focal point of this carmaker’s range. This means they can afford to take risks and create something really special. The V90 exudes understated style and good taste thanks to the simplicity of its design. From the efficiency of its engines to the clean and minimal interiors, it stands apart in a marginalised market.

That interior is worthy of particular comment – it’s become a real Volvo hallmark and this one especially, with its liberal use of natural materials, is really exceptional.

Elsewhere in the estate’s little corner of the car world, the German arms race continues, with Audi and Mercedes Benz still battling to shoehorn ever more comically overpowered engines into theirs. The RS6 and E63AMG are getting ridiculous nowadays (which is why I love them of course) and the latest from Mercedes is a case in point. The new S version now has over 600BHP and can do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds.

To put that in perspective, that’s enough power and pace to beat some two-seater supercars, yet this thing has a capacity to fit a family of five and all their luggage.

The E63AMG 4Matic+ (which means it has selective four-wheel drive) uses the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 as the E63 saloon, with cylinder deactivation tech to save fuel and cut emissions when you’re not in the mood to stretch necks.

It’s a sign of the times that neither stylish estates like the Volvo, nor high performance ones like the Mercedes and Audi, are expected to be big sellers. BMW no longer makes a ’touring’ version of its top-end M5, and Alfa Romeo doesn’t even make an estate at all any more. Yet despite this, there will always be a certain type of person who would consider such a car to be the perfect all-rounder.
