The summer holidays are over and, whether we like it or not, Christmas is just around the corner. In fact, by the time you are reading this magazine, it will be approximately 85 days away. Breast Cancer Now’s wear it pink day takes place across Manchester on Friday October 18th during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, the event has had an enormous impact on the lives of those affected by breast cancer since launching in 2002 and has raised over £33 million for breast cancer research to date.

Anyone can take part in wear it pink. Some people will choose to hold a cake sale, while others will opt to organise a raffle or arrange a pink fancy dress day at their school or workplace. No matter how people choose to wear it pink, all the money raised will help Wear it pink on 18 October and raise funds for breast cancer research and support.

Manchester Girl Network highlights female diversity through ‘Girls of Manchester’ campaign

With over 3,500 active members, Manchester Girl Network is fast becoming one of the largest online communities for women in Manchester. The volunteer-based female friendship social network is currently run by 16 incredible volunteers, dedicated to empowering, inspiring and supporting 20

The benefits of friendship on mental health are well established and through coffee chats, drinks, gigs, cinema trips, inspirational panel discussions and more, Manchester Girl helps both those who are new to the city and those who have been here for as long as they can remember, and is an opportunity to find the friends that make a city like Manchester feel like home. On September 1st, Manchester Girl launched the ‘Girls of Manchester’ campaign, which tells the story of members, incorporating how they’ve come to call Manchester home and what their aspirations for the future are.

Moroccan glamour at Elle for Elle annual ball

£100,000 was raised at the inaugural Elle for Elle annual ball in aid of women who have escaped domestic abuse. The Elle for Elle ball, which adopted a ‘Midnight at the Oasis’ theme, featured a special performance from The Brand New Heavies – with the acid jazz and funk legends performing a selection of their chart hits to raise money for the women’s charity. Guests were treated to Moroccan glamour in Manchester, inspired by the souks of Marrakech and including a tantalising three-course

Moroccan food feast and entertainment throughout the evening. An auction in aid of the women’s charity took place with prizes including VIP weekend tickets to Coachella Festival, a weekend trip to the Monaco Grand Prix, and a personal shopping experience at Louboutin World in Paris. Elle for Elle is a charitable foundation dedicated to helping women and girls who have been brave enough to escape abusive relationships and are moving into refuges. Dignity after

Distress, Elle for Elle’s main campaign, aims to help vulnerable women maintain dignity and practice self-care by keeping bathrooms and cupboards of refuges stocked with beauty products as well as providing beauty days for women to enjoy.

Elle for Elle also looks to provide women with qualifications and skills in beauty to ensure they have the opportunity to work within salons or for themselves after leaving refuges. Recently receiving praise in Westminster for giving the nation’s most vulnerable women ‘moments of dignity’, Elle for Elle aims to raise awareness for the plight of thousands of women and even more children housed in women’s refuges throughout the UK. All funds that were raised on the evening will be donated directly to the Elle for Elle charity. Birthday bash raises more than £388,000 for life-saving equipment

A staggering £388,825 was raised at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) Charity’s 10th Birthday Ball on Saturday September 21st – making a significant contribution to the iMRI Scanner Appeal. The star-studded event, which saw the likes of Sara Cox, John Thomson, Hugh Ferris, supergroup

Boyzlife and Antony Cotton gracing the red carpet, far exceeded expectations.

The amazing news is part of a big year for the RMCH Charity – in March, Peninsula pledged to raise £1million over three years and later in the month, Betfred donated £1.25 million. In June, the hospital celebrated its 10th birthday. The six-figure sum raised at the ball means the charity has taken a huge step forward in its plans to purchase an intra-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) and biplane angiography machine for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Chairman of the fundraising board, Mr Maurice Watkins CBE, said: “The night far exceeded our expectations and will remain a monumental

moment in the charity’s history. Every penny raised will help us ensure Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of paediatric brain surgery, helping to save even more young lives.

“We’re incredibly grateful to every single person who has helped us achieve our objectives – not just by the fantastic donations to the ball but everyone who has run a marathon, held a bake sale or made a cash donation to the iMRI Scanner Appeal.”

The event was hosted by BBC Radio Two presenter Sara Cox, who was welcomed back by RMCH Charity, having hosted the charity’s ball in 2009.

Entrepreneurial beginnings Wayne was born in Salford and raised in Astley. Although he never had any clear ambitions to work in construction, whilst at St. Mary’s Catholic High School, his head for business began to surface. He smiles: “I always did have an entrepreneurial side to me! I used to sell things like crisps and cans of pop to the kids at school and do car washing at the weekends on my parent’s drive. From very early on, I was independent and making my own money.”

“I was never the cleverest kid in the class,” he adds, “but I would work behind the scenes, twice as hard as anyone else, to get what I wanted.”

Post-A-levels, he applied for a job at Tarmac Construction (which later became Carillion) as a trainee quantity surveyor. During his 14 years with the company, he completed two degrees (quantity surveying and business management) and eventually made it to operations director, but red tape and lack of creativity began to frustrate him. It was then he decided to set up on his own. Having already managed various specialist suppliers as a quantity surveyor at Carillion, he knew where the high returns lay, so decided to specialise in aluminium glazing. A 12-month masterplan was drawn up, Altitude Aluminium was born.

“Absolutely,” says Wayne. “Firstly, it allows you to install insanely big wow-factor pieces of glass, the weight of which timber or UPVC couldn’t cope with. It’s durable, low maintenance and available in 500 different colours, and it can be used for interiors as well.” Is there a project/s he’s particularly proud of? “Sevendials in Mottram St Andrew and Seven Steps in Wilmslow,” he says without hesitation.

Skies the limit Now in its seventh year, both Altitude’s incoming business and team continue to grow. What’s next for the company?

“We want to cement our reputation in the North West and along the Welsh coastline, where lots of old houses are being replaced with supersonic ones facing out to the sea (and ripe for Altitude’s view-tastic glazing). “We’re all about stable, sustainable growth, because we are here for the long haul. “We have a fantastic new showroom in Chester, which allows our clients to touch and feel all of our product range and get a real sense of how their project could look. We have recently installed a new motorised Reynaers Hi-Finity slimline sliding door for visitors to try – it’s amazing, beyond words!” We suspect Altitude’s success is in no small part down to Wayne’s grounded and honest approach to business?

“Anyone who knows me in Cheshire will tell you I’m a very sociable guy,” he smiles. “No matter where I am or what I’m doing, I talk to people! I am approachable yet professional and deliver what I’m going to say I’ll deliver. As a business, we do what we say on the tin – this builds trust. A lot of people whose homes I’ve worked on are now personal friends. I also want to ensure we give our team and contractors the best working environment.”

A special thank you In typical Wayne fashion, he attributes much of his success to his eleven-strong team: “Without my team, I wouldn’t have been able to deliver our business plan. They deserve so much recognition for all the hard work, loyalty and passion they’ve put into the business. A special mention must go to my sales executive, Jude Moulsdale, who has worked alongside me over the past seven years. I can bring a potential client to the business, but she turns it into an order. Her product knowledge, her passion for each individual project/client and her determination to stick to our business plan is unbeatable. She creates the much-needed stability behind my sometimes-crazy entrepreneurial flair, she’s just fantastic.”

Kicking back Wayne lives in Cheshire with his wife Charlotte and sons Archie (14) and Zack (8) and daughter Felicity (10). He admits much of his time is “work, work, work”, but running Alderley United FC Under-9s is a passion that allows him to switch off and spend time with his younger son: “Altitude sponsors the team and it’s such a great thing to be involved in. It allows me to switch off and it’s the one thing that makes me stop thinking about aluminium!” He tells us that making his parents and family proud is still his biggest motivator. His father passed away last year and was perhaps one of his biggest inspirations: “I get a lot of my characteristics from watching and working with my dad over the years, his work ethic – he worked so hard, long hours. He was so organised, charismatic and from directors to the boy who swept the canteen, he always had time and a little story for them.”

Like father, like son. And with such a down-to-earth approach, Altitude deserves every second of its sky-high success.

Entrepreneur Michael Josephson MBE reveals how an early life filled with loss, abuse and depression is now the driving force behind his business success and life-affirming, far-reaching charity work

Sincere, intuitive and tenacious, 44-year-old Michael Josephson is an entrepreneur determined to make a difference. A man of his word, over the last 15 years, he’s raised over £4 million for local charities – and for Childline North West in particular. He says, “I’m passionate about Childline – it’s my story too. You see, one doesn’t need to come from wealth to make wealth.”

Childhood Michael was 10 when his beloved mother suddenly died. Devastated and isolated, he spent six years in and out of care, enduring bullying and extensive abuse.

Leaving the ‘system’ at 16, he displayed the initiative that’s brought him success.

He took a BTEC college course, discovered his innate flair for marketing and, yes, he found his niche.

Business In 1998, Michael and a client set up buying and selling surplus stocks. After 17 years, Michael took company control.

Renamed Stocks 2015 Ltd, it now boasts a £3 million turnover, dealing worldwide in end-of-line items – from luxury Godiva Chocolates and jewellery to everyday shampoo, clothing and toothpaste. Michael also co owns an online business Wisebuy Ltd with his partner Lindon Kellett, his life partner and official civil partner since their June 30th, 2012 ceremony at the Alderley Edge Hotel – attended by pal Dame Esther Rantzen.

Lowest point & advice On December 28th, 1998, Michael, then 24, redefined his life’s path. He had come out. He lived the city-centre high life – partying, drinking, bingeing and taking drugs. He also suffered great ‘downers’.

Plumbing the depths, he decided to end it all.

“I hadn’t reached out to anyone but should have done,” he explains. “On your own, things build up in your head. You put yourself in an even darker place. But another person’s viewpoints can show you light at the end of the tunnel. My advice is ‘open up’. Help is always available.”

Crisis Averse to dwelling on things negative, Michael recalls carefully, “I was not in my right mind. Alcohol and substances had increased my deep depression. That night, I felt desperate. I climbed onto a bridge over the A34 and prepared to jump. After two hours up there, the drink had worn off and I really didn’t want to kill myself. I saw the mayhem I’d created – the police and ambulances down there. I’d wasted their time. I’d no option. I jumped and landed 60 feet below right onto my feet. I broke

umpteen bones throughout my body. I lay motionless in hospital for six weeks and during that time, realised I did have purpose in my life. I couldn’t turn the clock back but could see a future. I’d make changes. Above all, I wanted my mother to look down and be proud of me.”

29th this year, a jaw-dropping £318,900 was pledged to Variety, the Children’s Charity, the Seashell Trust and Esther Rantzen’s The Silver Line. Then four days later, on July 3rd, Michael nipped down south to accept the Freedom of the City of London from the Lord Chamberlain.

Motivation Discharged after many months, workaholic Michael was hungrier than ever for financial success. He states, “Qualifications and academic prowess weren’t needed – but passion, instinct and common sense were. Being streetwise like me, was a great start. Keeping it small and centralised, I still run a tight ship with loyal staff and know what’s going on.”

Supporting every age group Michael says, “My odds of surviving without brain damage and of walking again were negligible. You can understand my motivation and mission to provide help wherever it’s most required. Luckily, not every child suffers abuse or bereavement, but odds are, many of us nowadays can expect to grow old.”

Success & fundraising The rest is not history but an ongoing progression of commercial, personal and philanthropic achievements for Michael, who, in childhood, loved holding little charity jumble sales. He clarifies, “I want no child to have the childhood I had.”

Unsurprisingly, his first focus was on helping children. Fundraising from 2008 till 2017 for Esther Rantzen’s Childline North West, Josephson brought in a staggering £3.4 million and a welldeserved but unexpected MBE in 2015.

Two years later, he established the Michael Josephson Charity Summer Ball at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. 400 guests at the star-studded 2018 and 2019 events raised a further £574k. Of this, on June

Papyrus – Shattering stigma, saving lives suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK. Last year, 1866 under-35s died by suicide. Every year, over 200 school children are lost to suicide Suicide doesn’t discriminate. There is no ‘typical’ profile of a lost life. Each death reverberates, leaving loved ones’ lives and whole communities changed forever. Change is imperative and is being driven by national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.

Tireless campaigning for change PAPYRUS (Parents’ Association for the Prevention of Young Suicide) was founded 22 years ago by Jean Kerr, a Lancashire mother who lost her son to suicide. Today, the charity works tirelessly to reduce the number of young people dying by suicide by shattering the stigma that surrounds it and creating a cross-country network of communities that have the suicide awareness and skills to take positive action.

“Research shows that with appropriate early intervention and support, many young suicides can be prevented,” says Hazel Russell, Papyrus’s Head of Fundraising. “Suicidal people are often too afraid to share their feelings. Too often people are scared they’ll say the wrong thing to a suicidal person. It is eradicating both the stigma and fear that shapes PAPYRUS’s work.”

Supporting young people, educating communities HOPELINEUK (0800 068 4141) is the charity’s dedicated helpline – manned by fully trained staff providing confidential support and advice to young people or anyone worried about a young person.

PAPYRUS also engages communities and volunteers in suicide prevention projects and delivers training programmes to individuals and groups – arming everyone from local councils and healthcare professionals to school staff with suicide prevention skills.

“Yes, we are a young person’s charity,” explains Hazel, “and we have taken massive steps in encouraging young people to talk about their feelings, but removing stigma is just as important.

There is no point a young person confiding in someone if that person doesn’t know what to say or how to respond. We are here to educate everyone, because everyone has a duty of care to look after our young people and keep them safe.”

Additionally, the charity is a long-standing member of the government advisory groups in England and Wales on suicide prevention matters, helping shape national social policy and making a significant contribution to the local and regional implementation of national suicide prevention strategies.

Hard-hitting campaigns To highlight their mission, PAPYRUS creates brave, sometimes shocking, campaigns which, once witnessed, are impossible to forget.

Earlier this year, the charity paved the steps of St George’s Plateau in Liverpool with 226 pairs of shoes – each pair representing a child lost to suicide in 2017.

“There were no banners, no announcements… just the shoes,” remembers Hazel of the stop-you-in-your-tracks Lost Childhoods campaign, “An older lady came up to us and said, ‘they shouldn’t be there!’ We paused. She continued, ‘they shouldn’t be there, they should be running up and down those steps’… It was incredibly poignant, as was the moment a young girl came to look at the shoes, she was wearing one of our wristbands. She explained how her nan had given her it after she’d suffered with mental health issues, she’d told her granddaughter that it would ‘keep her safe’.

The wristband had our helpline number on it.”

Another 2018 campaign, entitled Bedtime Stories, focussed on cyber bullying. It included a short film showing a mother reading to her young daughter at bedtime. But this is no tale of castles and happy ever afters but social media taunts that leave you speechless.

“40% of the calls we receive from children and young people aged 11-18 involve issues around online bullying,” says Hazel. “For many, it can seem like there is no escape, that the bullying will never stop or go away, and that everyone would be ‘better off ’ without them.”

Widespread support PAPYRUS doesn’t receive any government funding and relies on generous donations from its many supporters. From people who donate a couple of pounds out of their benefits, to big-name corporate sponsorship – the support elsewhere for PAPYRUS is reassuringly strong, and each of these donations valued equally.

In September, to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, PAPYRUS took part in a BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal. Andy Airey, a supporter bereaved by suicide, went on air to share his daughter Sophie’s story. The appeal so far has raised nearly £10,000.

Miss England 2018/19, Alisha Cowie, is now an official Ambassador for the charity, having herself having lost a friend to suicide and been the victim of bullying. Together with other finalists in the competition, she raised over £20k for PAPYRUS. “You look at Alicia and think, she’s beautiful, what worries could she have?” says Hazel, “but that’s exactly our point. That’s exactly how people shouldn’t think. Nobody is immune to bullying, isolation and suicidal thoughts. We just need more people like her to stand up and speak out.”

Positive impact Throughout 2018/19, PAPYRUS has delivered training across the UK to create over 500 life-assisting caregivers and equipped young people and their communities with the tools they need to stay safe from suicide. During this same period, and compared with 2017/18, there has been an 80% increase in calls to HOPELINEUK. Whilst Hazel is delighted with this positive change, she says there is still so much work to do:

“The official suicide statistics released this month show that the rate of suicide is increasing, and we need to act. We must remember that suicide was only decriminalised in 1961 and, unfortunately, that stigma around a suicide verdict still exists.

People still find it so hard to talk about.”

Surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments have become very popular in the UK over the last decade, with an increasing number of people undergoing procedures. The beauty industry has grown significantly in recent years too and of all cosmetic procedures carried out, around 90% are non-surgical. Nonsurgical procedures are those that revise or change the appearance, colour, texture, structure or position of the bodily features to achieve what the patient perceives to be more desirable.

The non-surgical cosmetic industry is not regulated, which means there is no formal requirement for those carrying out these treatments to be properly trained, qualified or registered. Unregulated beauty therapists can carry out non-surgical treatment, such as dermal fillers, chemical peels and laser treatments. Proper regulation would generally ensure a minimum standard, so the current lack of regulation means quality of service within the industry can vary significantly. infections, lacerations, loss of speech, muscle damage, scarring and other types of permanent disfigurement or temporary harm. The consequences of a cosmetic procedure going wrong can be devastating, leading to physical, emotional and financial suffering.

It isn’t uncommon for individuals to undergo procedures just before significant events, such as weddings, holidays or major social occasions. If things go wrong, the person affected may elect not to attend an event due to the resulting physical pain, disfigurement, psychological anxiety and embarrassment. Often, injuries can be permanent, impacting the patient’s life, family and lifestyle.

In many cases, there is no adequate complaints procedure, and many people do not think they have a right to legal recourse when things go wrong. Hari, we’ve seen your new adverts in the magazine, and they look very hard-hitting, could you explain how they came about?

The campaign came about following a chance meeting late last year with some American lawyers who were dealing exclusively with cases involving elderly residents in care homes. There was a sad story involving one of the lawyer’s parents, who had undergone routine surgery and then died shortly afterwards in a care home, where they had been placed to recuperate, as a result of being given the wrong medication by a member of staff.

This particular lawyer had changed his field and effectively embarked on a crusade to prevent this type of neglect occurring elsewhere. It struck me that there was very little awareness in the UK as to how to deal with any type of poor service, neglect or abuse within the care home sector, despite these stories being all too common over here.

Are the standards of care in the USA much worse than they are here?

Unfortunately not. It appears that not only is the standard of care in the UK now some way behind our counterparts in the USA, but there is also a mentality not to complain, and to put up with things as they are.

Why does this issue have such an effect on you personally?

I have been a practising lawyer for over 25 years and have always been interested in combining a passion for law with helping others, particularly any marginalised members of our society. Sadly, issues surrounding our most elderly can be overlooked or ignored. My own mother unfortunately suffers with dementia, and my father also passed away due to a poor level of care. There seems to be a consistent theme amongst elderly relatives that care homes should be avoided at all costs, and this shouldn’t be the case. Many years from now, when it might be my turn, I would like to think that people would generally think differently.

Do you think that all care homes are providing poor service?

Absolutely not. There are some fantastic care homes that provide an exceptional service to their residents. I want to highlight those that are falling well short and raise awareness that it shouldn’t be tolerated.

When did you first start the campaign and what was the initial response?

I started the campaign online earlier this

year. The initial response was overwhelming in terms of people who have experienced very poor care. It is clearly a nationwide issue, but there are many cases locally.

Standard complaints include residents experiencing pressure sores, dehydration, unsanitary conditions, lack of exercise or mental stimulation, bodily injury etc. There are also sadly some incidents of abuse.

What would you want our readers to do?

The message is that we want to ‘Break the Silence’. We want people to speak out and contact us when they are concerned about the level of care that an elderly person is receiving. It shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet. We wouldn’t dream of putting up with unacceptable care for our children, and this shouldn’t be any different when it comes to our parents.

What do you hope to achieve?

I hope that in the future, there are no more examples of our elderly having to suffer in silence. I would like to think that when I reach old age, residential care is something that can be enjoyed and not feared. I would be proud to say that I have helped to raise standards.

Khatra Paterson – Born survivor It should be made compulsory that anyone who has ever faced adversity reads Khatra Paterson’s story. It’s heartbreaking.

Its wholly inspirational message is simple: anything is possible…

A chaotic childhood As a child, Khatra lived in extreme poverty and against the backdrop of domestic abuse. “There were days when we would go without food, and we had no heating or toys,” recalls Khatra.

Then, shockingly, Khatra reveals that her dad used to tie her and her siblings to the sofa, leaving them unable to move all day.

“My mum gave the seven of us everything she could,” she continues, “but my dad physically abused her and then abused me to hurt her. She was a prisoner producing kids, often without consent.

In Somalia, if a woman leaves her husband, he gets custody of the kids. My dad used this to blackmail her, telling her we’d be sent back to Africa.”

Aged 10, Somalia-born Khatra was flown back to her birthplace from her new home in Scunthorpe. She excitedly imagined she was going on holiday. Instead, shortly after arriving, she was taken to a room, pinned down by strangers, and her clitoris and labia removed. Without consent. Without anaesthetic.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice born of ingrained cultural beliefs that dictate this torture will make the victim ‘clean’, no longer ‘at risk of promiscuity’ and ‘worthy of marriage’. There were 4,120 new recorded cases in England in 2018/19.

For 41 years, Khatra buried her own experience deep and did everything in her power to escape her brutal childhood.

Giving her 10-year-old self a voice We meet Khatra fresh from a well-deserved break in sunny LA. From her beautiful home in Hale, she’s pondering the incessant rain in Manchester and her decision to share her story with the world. “It was discovering the charity One Woman At A Time that made me decide to give that little girl a voice,” says Khatra.

Through education and vocational training, the charity arms women and girls in disadvantaged areas of Africa, India and the UK with the skills and knowledge to create sustainable change – both for themselves and their communities. Khatra is now a patron.

As she grew, a strong work ethic kicked in and Khatra began to dream of better things: “I wasn’t the brightest at school – I have dyslexia – but I pushed myself constantly just to escape that world.”

A new life Khatra’s Hale-based business (KP Aesthetics) is a huge success.

She’s married to Brian and has two sons, of whom she talks with a beaming smile and endless pride.

Her mum eventually left her dad and, now 72, lives happily in Scunthorpe. Female super strength evidently runs in the family.

Success and contentment have never been more deserved.

Before we leave, we congratulate Khatra on being named Inspirational Person of the Year at the Safety in Beauty Diamond Awards 2019. Eyes filling with tears, she recalls the impetus behind her winner’s speech: “I want to tell little girls, anyone, that you can escape a chaotic life and achieve your dreams. It’s hard work but you can open those doors. And if they don’t open, smash them down until they do!”

Carol, how would you describe your personal style?

I would say my style is classic, consisting mainly of blue jeans and white shirts with variations of fitted trousers and shirts. So, I wanted to try some looks that may not be in my comfort zone!

What did you enjoy most about the styling session and shoot?

I loved every minute! I was far more adventurous than I would normally be and Veneta really knew what would suit me. My hair, make-up and the stunning choice of clothes made me realise how we can all enjoy and embrace change. The team were great, I really had a wonderful time and I cannot thank them enough!

What was your favourite outfit?

All of the outfits I tried on were lovely, but on the night, my

favourite was the Malloni orange sweater with those fantastic shoes. But when I got home and thought about the evening, I changed my mind, I realised how much I really loved the outfit which was least like my usual style, the NÜ black shimmery top with drop-crotch trousers. Oh wow, that is a striking outfit and I was so surprised just what a difference a chunky necklace can make; Veneta certainly has a great eye for style.

St Lucia – the jewel of the Caribbean

Known for its natural beauty, golden beaches, honeymoon havens and diverse attractions

In the tranquil, lush and verdant south, St Lucia is home to the signature Piton mountains, a rainforest and one of the world’s few drive-in volcanoes. In the north, step beyond the sandy beaches and you’ll find popular resorts, delicious food and rum, and an island that is bustling with things to do.

STYLE Grow your berry own cocktail bar? Now you’re talking

By Catherine Saunders. Read more at www.ladymuck.style As you know, I am quite partial to the odd cocktail. Whisper the words ‘Raspberry Fizz’ or ‘Blackberry Rum Punch’ and I am putty in your hands. Particularly cute, young mixologists’ hands as I drool over their blending vodka, lime Juice, raspberries, mint and lemonade for me. But in an attempt to curb my cocktail-fuelled antics being plastered all over Instagram – again – I’ve decided to grow my own raspberries to make sure my inebriated shenanigans are contained to my own backyard next year.

Autumn is the perfect time to plant raspberry canes and apparently manure is the secret to super-juicy fruits So, last week, not having a clue where to get hold of a load, I went to see my old pal Jack at my local allotments. Now, Jack is a right old character. A legend on the allotments, highly respected by newbies and seasoned growers alike, not to mention lusted after by the site’s silver-haired widows. But that’s a whole other story.

Always a man of few words, Jack didn’t disappoint. I watched transfixed as this still handsome octogenarian slowly reached

into his pocket for a pencil, which he languorously licked before writing down a mobile number on a scrap of paper. He then lent forward and whispered in my ear: “Ring this number” Long pause.

“Tell him you’re after some of his best stuff” Long pause.

“The stuff he keeps out back” Longest of pauses ever.

“Say Jack sent you. He’ll see you right.”

It was like a clip straight out of The Godfather and as I found myself nervously dialling the number later that day, I kept one ear out for the police sirens, the other out for the drug squad and, to top it all, I was fearful that I would awake to a horse’s head on my pillow. But call I did and yesterday, a quarter ton of horse manure was dumped in my back garden and whilst I’m not looking forward to shovelling it on my newly purchased raspberry bushes, it will be worth it next summer when my garden turns out to be the most popular cocktail bar in town.

So, if you fancy having a go, here are a few tips for growing raspberries. Varieties Glen Ample and Autumn Bliss do really well in containers if you are short on space. Glen Ample grows upright and produces large fruits in July and August, whilst Autumn Bliss crops from mid-August until early October. Just in time for Halloween cocktails. Result. Make sure to fill your containers with potting compost (80% general purpose plus 20% of John Innes compost). If possible, follow Jack’s lead and add some good quality manure, but as you will only need a small amount, head to a garden centre, where you can pick up a small bag. One or two raspberry canes can be planted in a 45cm-wide container. Dig out a hole wide enough to take the roots and spread out slightly. The depth is important, they should be planted to same depth as they were grown – look out for the soil mark near the base of the cane and plant them to that depth. Firm the soil around the planted raspberry cane and water well.

What has been your favourite project so far and why?

My favourite project was a consultation for a lady who had been in the process of transforming her home for 12 months.

Bee breast aware Meet Manchester’s BooBee – taking flight in the fight against breast cancer During October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), you’ll be seeing a lot more of BooBee across the city – she’s the symbol of a brandnew Manchester-led campaign with a critical message: awareness and prevention saves lives.

We caught up with the woman behind the wings, Margo Cornish, to find out more…

A brand-new movement born in Manchester BooBee is the marvellous mascot of a new partnership between Prevent Breast Cancer and Margo Cornish, known for her tireless campaigning and fundraising for Maggie’s Manchester as well as being an ambassador for Teenage Cancer Trust North West.

Margo was about to take a year off when she became aware of a frightening trend in the prevalence of breast cancer in Manchester: “Last year, whilst producing a large event in the city, it became clear to me that there were an unusually high proportion of women fighting breast cancer taking part,” recalls Glaswegian-turned-adoptedMancunian Margo. “Women who were previously normal, healthy and fit; women who looked after themselves and didn’t smoke and women who had no previous history of breast cancer in their family. This really worried me.”

It was then that she joined forces with Manchester-based Prevent Breast Cancer – the only UK charity committed solely to predicting and preventing the disease – and launched the BooBee movement.

North West screening attendance below average Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, affecting 55,000 people each year and, sadly, 11,500 lose their life to the disease. It is also the biggest cause of death for women aged 35-49, yet the government and major cancer charities spend just 4% of their research funding on cancer prevention.

Breast screening saves lives. Each year, over 18,000 cases are detected through breast screening and more than 80% of all women diagnosed are over 50 years old, which is why breast screening is so vitally important.

Despite these figures, the number of women in the North West who took up their invitation to attend their breast screening appointment falls below the average for England. Prevent Breast Cancer and Margo want to change these figures.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms is essential; of the 55,000 people diagnosed each year, over 35,000 cases are symptomatic.

Predict. Prevent. Protect.

Breast cancer can affect women of all ages and, if caught early, it can be cured.

“We want to reach out to every woman in Greater Manchester,” says Margo, “women of all races and religions who make up our cosmopolitan city and tell them that it is okay to talk about breast cancer and, even better, talk about the steps they can take to decrease their risk.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate. All women should be checking themselves once a month – just after your monthly cycle if you’re premenopausal – and, if you’re over 50, you should attend mammogram

Why Manchester?

The Prevent Breast Cancer team are based at Wythenshawe Hospital and are leading the way in global scientific research into the disease. Currently, their studies include a world first – women having a risk assessment at the same time as a breast screening, which could potentially revolutionise NHS breast screening in the UK. On a lighter note, ‘Mamucium’, the ancient name for the city, is derived from the Roman word meaning ‘breast-shaped hill’. Surely, it was meant to ‘bee’…

Creating a buzz around breast cancer When Margo decided to take decisive action in raising awareness of breast cancer, she collaborated with designer Melanie Hudson from Stir Creative to create the glorious ‘BooBee’: “I wanted something everyone associated with Manchester,” says Margo, “and bees were a natural choice, as they work together to support and protect each other. Our BooBee wants to help support and protect the women of Greater Manchester and also help us be the city that conquers breast cancer.

“I was over the moon with Mel’s creation, it ticked every box as a mascot. She’s a queen bee. She’s not the shy, retiring type but instead, she stands for strength and tenacity, the survival of the colony and longevity. Bees are precious and your health is precious.”

To ensure the mascot had longevity, Margo has since gifted it to Prevent. “A campaign has a beginning and an end,” says Margo, “this is a movement.”

Later, there will be fabulous food (all approved by Prevent dietician Michelle Harvie), entertainment, fundraising and powerful stories told by 100 North West women, each of whom have volunteered to back the campaign and reiterate that breast cancer ‘can happen to any woman’.

“It’s currently under wraps,” smiles Margo, “but the jaw-dropping finale is NOT to be missed.”

Throughout the month, the BooBee bus (see image) will be stopping at femalecentric locations and organisations across the city, sharing the knowledge, spreading the word.

A breast cancer-free future By supporting the BooBee campaign, a future that is breast cancer-free can be a reality. And if you can’t attend an event or catch the bus, pick up some merchandise!

For example, buy a BooBee soap-on-a-rope for a friend to remind her to check herself in the shower. The money you spend will fund Prevent’s research programme.

“Together, we can educate women about breast cancer risks whilst protecting our daughters, grand-daughters and every generation to come from breast cancer,” says Margo.

“We want not only to create a positive shift in the city’s breast cancer statistics, we want people to look at Manchester and say ‘this is a blueprint for what we should be doing in our own cities’. That’s the ultimate goal for us – not just influencing the women of Manchester, but the entire country.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Month The Angelina Jolie effect – How Genetic Testing can benefit you When Hollywood royalty Angelina Jolie revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of developing breast cancer, the rates of genetic testing among women soared.

Currently, in the UK, women tend to be offered testing for the corrupted gene if cancer runs in the family. However, there are added benefits of having the test even if you don’t think there is a hereditary link. When women are diagnosed, they can be monitored more closely for cancer and many, like Angelina Jolie, have preventative surgery.

What is the faulty gene?

Mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 can impair the body’s ability to repair damage to DNA in its cells. This can greatly increase the risk of developing cancers. On average, women have a 2% chance of getting ovarian cancer in their lifetime. But in those with BRCA mutations, the chances can increase to between 10% and 60%.

Women have a 12.5% risk of getting breast cancer in their lifetime.

This goes up to between 45% and 90% with BRCA mutations.

Is the BRCA 1 and 2 test right for you?

Unfortunately, it is now estimated that one in every two people will get cancer in their lifetime. However, some common cancers – breast, melanoma, pancreatic, prostate and ovarian – are known to occur more frequently in families, passing from one generation to the next.

We keep a ‘reliever’ inhaler at home as a safety precaution, just in case she catches a bad cold.

My daughter’s experience was an eye-opener for me, and I decided to retrain and become a nutritional therapist, firstly in order to know how to continuously manage and improve my own family’s health but also to help educate others.

I decided to study nutrition at CNM after experiencing the impact dietary changes had on my little girl’s health. She was very poorly between the ages of one and three, with frequent trips to the hospital due to recurrent chest infections and asthma-like symptoms. She was prescribed corticosteroids, antibiotics and a variety of inhalers, but I was frustrated at simply managing my daughter’s symptoms with medication and not actually seeing any progress in her health. I had previously worked in marketing but after I had my children, I ran my own online retail business from home so I could work around them. As they grew, I wanted a career but also the flexibility of fitting my hours around the school schedule.

Are you ready to sign on the dotted line... for a commercial lease?

Are you aware of all the rights and responsibilities of both the landlord and the tenant during the term of the lease? We have highlighted our tops tips below: 1. LEASE PERIOD Are you looking for flexibility or security from your lease? Too long and you may commit yourself to a property that no longer suits the expansion or downsizing needs of your business. Too short and the time spent fitting out the premises could mean you may not have enough time to recoup that spend before you have to move on.

2. PROTECTED OR EXCLUDED FROM 1954 ACT Part II of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, which stipulates that commercial occupiers often have an automatic right

Make sure the lease clearly defines the premises and that the demised premises described in the lease matches the demised premises you expect to receive to operate your business.

Second book 19 years on, Dawn has penned Dynamic Digital Marketing. It’s a hardback handbook-cum-textbook, guiding you through digital and social media techniques essential for an improved online presence. Interestingly, Wiley Publishing had been sent Dawn’s proposal in September 2018 but only responded the following April, when it was found in the spam folder! Within three days, Dawn had the thumbs up and her contract signed.

She says: “Digital marketing has altered more in the last two years than in the previous 50. You get used to one thing then another comes along. Globally, there’s a huge skills gap. If we don’t empower our youth, never mind our 35 to 50-year-olds, we’ll have 750,000 jobs unfilled in the 2020s. My mission and ‘give-back’ is to reach one million people. By reducing fear of the digital world, we are assured we will always have new talent coming in. This is the way forward. Online accessibility gives a brand and products the greatest chance to succeed.”

Sharing her 20 years’ expertise, she’s launched a free online training portal for anyone, anywhere, who is interested in internet marketing and all things digital.

Entrepreneur at 21 Dawn, 40, preaches precisely what she’s always practised. At 21, a £5,000 Prince’s Trust loan enabled this cookie young entrepreneur to set up Aurora Marketing, which in 2005, merged with Business Consort Digital and Social Media Academy. Does Common law marriage exist?

No. Unfortunately, it is a popular myth that common law marriage is acquired after a period of cohabitation – it hasn’t existed in the UK since 1753! The only way to get legal rights like a married couple is to get married, as you do not acquire rights by living with your partner. It is therefore very important to consider this before you decide to cohabit.

What are the main challenges for education at the moment?

Obviously, it is hard to ignore school funding, and this has also impacted on the private sector too. The newly reformed exams have led to volatility with grade boundaries and marks being unpredictable. Curriculum changes have led to some schools focusing less on creative subjects, such as art and drama, and even modern foreign languages, are seeing less take up.

Is suicide preventable?

Suicide remains the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK and we are passionate about smashing the stigma and taboos around talking about suicide. We believe that many young suicides are preventable and that we can reduce the number of young people who take their own lives by equipping them and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal behaviour. Without legal rights, how can cohabiting couples protect their positions?

Cohabiting couples can enter into a cohabitation agreement to regulate what would happen to their assets if their relationship broke down in the future.

It may seem ‘unromantic’, but with more and more couples choosing not to get married these days, many are acknowledging the need to have something set out to document their intentions from the outset.

What are the different ways in which property can be jointly owned?

You can own property with another person in two ways: joint tenants or tenants in common. As joint tenants, you would hold the property in equal shares.

If one joint tenant dies, the remainder of the property transfers automatically to the survivor. Alternatively, as tenants in common, you can own the property in unequal shares, but the right of survivorship does not apply.

Deciding whether your marriage has come to an end is one of the most difficult decisions you may ever have to make. If you’re contemplating a divorce it’s important to seek advice from a family lawyer as there are numerous myths surrounding family law, which can be misleading.

Can my dairy-intolerant child become calcium deficient?

Pasteurised dairy may not be the best source of calcium. Most of us are depleted in magnesium/ vitamin D – important for bone and teeth health and development. A family’s diet should comprise fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food, ensuring the highest nutrient content and the lowest carbon footprint.

Seasonal, local food is less expensive and supports local farmers. Encourage your child to take part in food preparation and cut vegetables into fun shapes.

What is a soft tissue sarcoma?

Soft tissue tumours (sarcomas) are very rare cancers that are usually found on the arms, legs and trunk.

They can, however, affect any part of the body and account for less than 1% of all cancers in the UK. Figures show that about 5,300 new cases are diagnosed per year nationwide.

Outdoor activities encourage bone strength and help with vitamin D formation which, along with magnesium, helps the body utilise calcium properly. Whole fruit, veggie sticks, nuts and seeds are great snacks in between meals to keep blood sugar levels from dipping and stop you or your child getting ‘hangry’.

Foods to avoid that deplete calcium?

Sugar depletes magnesium, and fizzy drinks can leach calcium from the body. Banish ready meals, processed grains, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cola, anything ‘toothkind’, ‘lite’, ‘free-from’ and fizzy. Encourage your child to drink pure water and only offer very diluted, freshly squeezed fruit juices as a treat.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include an unexplained lump which is increasing in size, larger than 5cm (golf ball size), painful (majority are not) and deep within the tissues but not always. Sometimes lumps which are small in size can present as an aggressive lesion. There may be evidence of skin changes, discolouration, fungating lesions, particularly if there’s a history of previous surgery or radiotherapy.

How do you diagnose and treat a soft tissue sarcoma?

With more than 100 subtypes, recognition of the symptoms is crucial to ensure prompt management.

Assessment is best done by a specialised sarcoma surgeon with a thorough history and examination. All lumps should be imaged appropriately (ultrasound or MRI scan) and a biopsy may be taken for review by a sarcoma histopathologist. All cases are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team including a Consultant Surgeon, Radiologist, Pathologist and Oncologist. If you are concerned by any lump, please get it assessed.

Careers on course after exam success at Cheadle Hulme school Topping the school’s GCSE results table were Siân Talbot and Elizabeth Fisher, who led the way by achieving nine in each of their subjects. The students who received their GCSE results are now embarking upon the school’s enriching career Pathways Programme as Sixth Formers – the first cohort of students to set foot in the school’s brand new Sixth Form Centre, which opened its doors at the start of September. Meanwhile, the Class of 2019 are enjoying their first term at some of the country’s top universities, including Cambridge, Bath, Warwick and Leeds.

Others are embarking upon sought-after industry apprenticeships in economics and business.

Students at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS) are closer to securing their dream careers after 79% achieve grades A*-B or higher at A-level and 42% achieve GCSE grades 9-8 (A*-B or higher).

The school achieved a 100% GCSE pass rate, with five students awarded an impressive eight grade 9s or higher. Two students received grade 9s in all relevant subjects. At A-level, five students from the Class of 2019 were awarded an outstanding three A*s or higher, with six achieving at least one D1 (a grade higher than A*) at Pre-U.

Jason Brown and Head Boy Raphael McMahon, both destined for the University of Cambridge, achieved the equivalent of four A* A-level grades each. Jason, reading engineering at Trinity College, said: “I’d been at CHS since Reception, so it’s a big change, particularly without my family and school friends around, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”

Invited guests came together for the official opening of Cheadle Hulme School’s brand-new Sixth Form Centre.

Guests were invited to explore the new building, including donors, Old Waconians (former students) and friends of the school. CHS’s Chair of Governors, Mr Philip Johnson, thanked all those involved in the project and added that following the recent development of the Sports Pavilion, this is a further addition to the outstanding facilities at CHS. The contemporary, light and spacious building, which has been completed over the last eight months, features a large independent learning area, spaces for both collaborative work and

silent study, a sizeable common room as well as a cafe and a covered outdoor eating space. The landmark project is the first time in the school’s history that Sixth Formers will have their own dedicated building.

The Grange school achieves best A-level results in four years

The Grange School is celebrating its best A-level results in four years, with nearly nine in every 10 entries at grade B or above.

Whilst the academic landscape creates uncertainty around grade boundaries, students at The Grange in Hartford, Cheshire continue to excel. Over 64% of grades were achieved at A* or A, making these the best set of A-level results the school has achieved since linear examinations were reformed in 2015.

As well as strong results across the board, three students achieved the elusive and impressive clean sweep of all A*s across all of their subjects – Kate Samuel, Ben Maxwell-Reid and Jodie Sale. Further to last summer’s exploits as one of only four students selected to attend the International Geography Olympiad in Quebec City, Bree Livesey achieved A*AA and goes on to read geography at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge.

Having been a cast member of the Oscarwinning film The Silent Child, Annie Cusselle has further news to celebrate as her grades of A*AA gain her entry to her chosen International Management and Modern Languages BSc course at the University of Bath.

The Grange has a strong pedigree in the sciences. In keeping with tradition, biologists and chemists achieved 96% of grades at grades A* to B, whilst in the physics department, 17 out of every 20 of grades were at B or higher. Despite national drops in the popularity of the humanities, students at The Grange enjoy great success, with four out of every five grades at A*, A or B. Leading the way was the geography department with 79% A* or A grades, with economics and business students closely behind achieving 75% grades at A* or A. The Grange maintained its strength in the visual arts, with three quarters of art and graphic design students achieving a grade A* or A. Such excellence across departments gives students the confidence to pursue their interests and undertake an array of different subject combinations, including Kate Pedley and Isobel Hutt, who opted for breadth by studying two sciences and a humanity. Having achieved a full sweep of A grades, Kate and Isobel will be studying veterinary science at Liverpool and medicine at Sheffield respectively.

The students’ academic achievements, combined with the support of a strong

careers department, means a Grange education opens up a wide world of future options. Bob Cooper (AAA) will be studying in the USA in ‘the fall’, having accepted a place at Amherst College, Massachusetts. By achieving A*AA, Jacob Reilly heads to Birmingham to study for a computer science with a digital partnership degree. This degree will gain him work experience at PwC alongside his studies and in preparation for a career in digital technology.

In a similar vein, Samuel Sanger (ABB) heads to Harper Adams to study rural enterprise and land management, whilst Miles Hogg (ABB) heads to Royal Sandhurst to undertake officer training for the Army. Meanwhile, Max Darlington (AAA) will study aviation technology with pilot studies at the University of Leeds, enjoying the expertise of a professional flying school alongside his engineering degree.

Following on from the successes of A-level results, Grange students will be studying at a range of destinations, from the University of Durham to the University of Bath, studying everything from mechanical engineering to law.

The results featured some highly impressive individual performances and more than 50% of all grades awarded were in the top A*, A or B grades, the threshold required for many Russell Group university places.

In particular, Alistair O’Brien, from Llangollen, swept the board with four A* grades in mathematics, computer science, physics and further maths. He will now take up his place to study computer science at Queen’s College, Cambridge.

Toby Slack, from Ellesmere, who secured two A* grades in geography and biology and an A in chemistry, said: “I am delighted with my results. I will now read medicine at the University of Liverpool.”

One year on from the start of construction of the new £60-million King’s School campus, it is on schedule to be completed by the deadline of May 2020.

The main structure has been finished, with the roof already on the main academic building. Ground works on the grass and all-weather sports pitches are well underway and by Christmas, work will begin on completing the internal work. Work has begun on the widening of Alderley Road at the two main entrances, with street lighting to follow. Two bore holes have been dug out for irrigation of the new sports pitches and there is even water in the new 25-metre swimming pool drawn from the bore hole to test structural integrity.

Sat between Macclesfield and Over Alderley, the 80-acre site will feature a main academic building and a separate sports centre, which have been designed to incorporate as much natural light as

possible, with flexible learning areas and spaces for pupil wellbeing.

The academic building will provide bespoke accommodation for infant, junior, senior and sixth form pupils. The senior school will include: a large science faculty; an arts and design faculty with contemporary workshops, studios and an exhibition space; a performing arts faculty with a range of practice rooms, drama halls, a recording studio and a recital theatre; a modern foreign languages faculty with language classrooms and laboratories; dedicated classrooms for English, mathematics and the humanities; and a central library, a lecture theatre and a large entrance foyer. An impressive main hall will seat 950 people for both school events and community functions.

The sports centre will offer a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a sports hall, indoor cricket nets and a dance/martial arts studio. Outside, the 80-acre campus

will feature rugby pitches, two all-weather hockey pitches, cricket pitches, netball courts, tennis courts, football pitches, rounders pitches and a 400-metre athletics track.

King’s Director of External Relations, Caroline Johnson, said: “We already have 29 local organisations using our current facilities and we believe this will increase significantly when the community sees what this wonderful new facility has to offer.”

The site will be shielded from the main road by its low-lying location and mature trees have been carefully preserved to circle the site and maintain its natural beauty.

Caroline added: “The campus has been designed to allow nature and the rural aspects of the landscape to take centre stage, with the buildings surrounded by woodland and then ringed by fields and hills.”

The new school will open its gates to next year’s intake in September 2020.

Bowdon preparatory school's Golden Year

The last academic year saw many tremendous achievements for Bowdon Preparatory School for Girls. Highlights included winning one of only 10 national Primary Gold Awards from the Geographical Association, achieving the Gold Schools Games Award for the third year in a row, and winning three gold, three silver and nine bronze certificates in this year's UK Junior Maths Challenge. Even more impressive is that the latter achievement saw pupils up against older challengers from secondary schools. The year also included a number of firsts for the school: winning the Altrincham in Bloom gardening and Trafford orienteering competitions; hosting their first ‘B Festival’, which showcased exuberant musicians and dancers; and presenting their end of year production Seussical in front of two packed houses at the vibrant Sale-based arts venue Waterside! The school has even bigger ambitions for the next academic year, so watch this space.

A group of intrepid sixth form students and King’s English teacher Olivia Soutter took on the World Challenge expedition, combining eco-warrior volunteering with tough trekking and sea-bed exploration. The students had to organise much of their own itinerary, live to a strict budget and assist the international and local ecologists, learning first-hand about the

At the heart of the expedition was a study of Indonesian culture, custom and religious beliefs, with visits to historical sites like Borobudur, a ninth century Buddhist temple in Java, and watching Balinese dancing in Ubud. For the sheer thrill of idyllic island life, they enjoyed snorkeling on a coral reef and watching dolphins at sunrise in West Bali. King’s is planning their next World Challenge trip to Tanzania in 2021.

Eco-conscious pupils take action at stockport Grammar the school in order to begin the Eco School journey and provide ideas of areas to focus on. This included topics such as waste, energy and biodiversity.

Inspired Stockport Grammar Junior School pupils have set up an Eco Committee with the aim of making the whole school more environmentally friendly. The Eco Committee, which is made up of pupils from across the year groups, started by completing an Environmental Review of 84

As well as holding regular meetings, pupils have used their creative flare to design posters about the environment and a selected few were chosen to be printed on banners, which are now displayed outside the school. Earlier in the year, on Clean Air Day, the group set up a stall at the school gates in the morning and by the walkway at lunchtime to provide information to both pupils and parents about the importance of clean air. They gave stickers to pupils who made a cleaner air pledge.

Stockport Grammar School has already undertaken a number of initiatives to minimise the environmental footprint.

These include: • Installing solar panels on the newer buildings to generate power • Setting up Allotment Club to encourage pupils to grow their own fruit and vegetables • Sourcing purchases from local suppliers, where available, to minimise transport, particularly for fresh foods • Using Vegware products in the refectory rather than plastic • Switching bulbs in the school to efficient LEDs and installing lights that turn themselves off

Didsbury A-level student is top English language performer in the Uk

Withington Girls’ School A-level student Annie Hine, who lives in Didsbury, achieved an incredible 199 marks out of a possible 200 to earn the accolade of the top performer in OCR’s A-level English language examinations, taken by nearly 2,000 students in the UK. Annie, who has a place to study psychology at Lancaster University, was not expecting to discover that she was the top OCR English Language student when she collected her results.

“I was actually a bit worried about my English mark, as I wasn’t sure about how

well I’d done in my first English paper,” said Annie.

Discovering her achievement was a wonderful surprise for Annie and her parents, Sarah and Paul Hine, who are both immensely proud of Annie’s A-level results – she achieved an A in biology and A*s in both English language and psychology.

Annie joined Withington in Year 7 after attending St Catherine’s RC Primary School in Didsbury, and her mother says that Annie’s language skills became apparent at a very early age: “She’s always been a great reader and couldn’t wait to start writing as a very young child.”

Annie is a member of Withington’s Class of 2019, who celebrated the completion of their journey at Withington this summer with a set of impressive A-level results, recording 31% of grades at A* and 93% at A* to B.

Mrs Hine also paid tribute to the role Withington has played in Annie’s senior school education, saying: “The staff at Withington have always been so supportive and nurturing.”

The girls’ mother, Dr Saika Saeed, was delighted with the outcome: “When the girls were very young, although they had been placed in separate classes in school, they were getting the same results in their work. As the years progressed, this changed and their results were quite different, so today has really surprised us. We are obviously delighted but also very relieved as we were worried how it would work out if one had ended up being really happy with her results whilst the other hadn’t done quite as well.”

The Hale Barns duo successfully secured top grades in all their subjects, notching up exactly the same tally and each attaining eight grade 9s, plus an A* with distinction in further mathematics and an additional grade 8. Their subjects were the same, apart from Safa taking Latin and Imaan studying geography.

Picking up their results wearing matching outfits, the girls agreed, “We were worried that people would compare us, but it’s amazing that we have ended up with thesame grades in the same subjects. We couldn’t be happier.”

And although the pair admit to some healthy competition between them, they say there was no sibling rivalry when it came to revising, “We studied together, tested each other – even on the subject we weren’t studying ourselves – and we kept each other motivated,” said Safa.

Whilst the 16-year-olds are enjoying their double exam success and have similar extracurricular interests, such as Model United Nations, as to whether they are similar in personality, Imaan joked, “I’m organised and tidy, she’s much more messy than me!” and Safa commented, “We’re both academic, but some people say I’m more of a geek than Imaan.”

Withington pupils shine with outstanding results

members of this year’s GCSE cohort, for example, contributed to Withington winning two ISNC national netball titles when they played as U13s and U15s, and earned bronze medals as U16s in the prestigious National Schools Netball Competition in 2019.

Withington Girls’ School (WGS) recorded exceptional A-level and GCSE results over the summer, with particular success among its pupils in achieving the very top grades.

31% of A-level subject grades were passed at A*, while 55% of GCSE results were achieved at grade 9 or A* with distinction in further mathematics. With students securing places at the country’s best universities to study an array of subjects, ranging from art to zoology, WGS also saw nine of this year’s leavers, plus four students who left in 2018, prepare to start their courses of study at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

There were many impressive facts and figures: 13 A-level students achieved a clean

sweep of three or more A*s and nearly half of WGS’s Year 13 leavers earned at least three A*/A grades. In GCSEs, 15 pupils attained at least eight grade 9s, 12 of whom also earned the very top A* with distinction in further mathematics, while 48 (59%) Year 11 pupils earned grade 7 or above in all their subjects, equating to A*/A in the pre-reformed grading system.

“There’s no doubt that Withington girls do exceptionally well in public exams and year after year, we are thrilled to celebrate with them the fruits of their hard work on results days,” says Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam. “Not as widely known, perhaps, are their accomplishments beyond the academic aspects of school life. This year is the school’s first cohort of students completing the new BTEC qualification (RQS), which includes an examined component and is significantly more rigorous in demands. Staff were thrilled with students’ vocational results, especially as they were keen to keep the courses accessible to students by maintaining the same entry requirements.

DIDsBUrY prIDE 2019 After a bad start, the weather perked up on August 31st for Didsbury’s second Pride.

Drenched by torrential rain throughout their gentle procession through the village, supporters were greeted by sunshine on arrival at their destination, the Emmanuel Church

Doubling last year’s attendance, over 3,500 merry-makers of every age enjoyed six hours of non-stop entertainment provided by drag queen Mr Misty Chance plus numerous choirs, bands and DJs. There too were hilarious antics of funster-punters, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – five drag queen nuns! Meanwhile, seven independent food and beverage stalls and a bouncy castle kept everyone happy.

Pride is about solidarity, identifying with the LGBT cause and combatting hate crime. Alongside chirpy Rainbow merchandise, 14 stands proffered information on LGBT awareness, parenting, fostering, general health and advice for any parents coming to terms with their own child’s sexual orientation.

Sponsored by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors and Albert’s Didsbury, this year’s event was the brainchild of Michael Pollard, Didsbury Pride director and a board member of Manchester’s first-ever Gayfest, its Mardi Gras in 1982. He recalls, “During the HIV-spike, homophobia was rampant.

So, ours was a small ‘do’ with just a trestle table outside the city’s Rembrandt pub.”

By 2018, a mature Michael and pals, now in their fifties, recognised the Manchester extravaganza was no longer their scene.

Something more intimate to spread the word whilst partying seemed appropriate.

Aided by Croma’s Michael Baker, Home Cafe’s Miriam Jones, Gill Green from STORM and Reverend Nick Bundock at Emmanuel, Pollard’s ideas materialised last year. He explains:

Central to Didsbury Pride is the commemoration of 14-year-old Lizzie Lowe’s short life. Five years ago, fearing the disclosure of her sexuality would bring ignominy on her devout, church-going parents, Lizzie took her own life. Always pro-active in Emmanuel Church, the family is still firmly supported by Reverend Bundock and it was the Bishop of Manchester’s permission to hold Pride in the church grounds and church itself that enabled any celebration to take place at all.

“Didsbury Pride is local. The library and high street stores pitched in. We’re about community, inclusion and family – few of whom would have been attracted to Manchester’s enormous event. Our two successes seem to indicate a greater level of acceptance, understanding and normalisation for LGBT folk.”

Pollard adds: “Once more, this LGBTinclusive church hosted a joyous if not controversial occasion. Seeing Lizzie Lowe Foundation members, LGBT sports team players and many who knew Lizzie here showed it’s OK to be different.”

“We’ve come a long way from days when people thought all gay guys wear dresses and glitter. And 20 years ago, you’d rarely see same-sex Didsbury residents holding hands when dining out, which is no longer unusual. We just had to wait.”

Proceeds went to the Levante Samba Band, Manchester Contemporary Youth Choir, Stop Youth AIDS and other local causes.

TAYCAN OVER

not just an excuse for another weak pun, the fact remains that electric cars are indeed taking over. a good thing for the environment and also no bad thing that these things go like absolute rockets – albeit silent ones. when Porsche unveiled its own all-new electric model, the Taycan, there was naturally some high expectation.

This vehicle is aimed squarely to be a rival for the dominant Tesla, which has

proven to be one of the most important automotive inventions of the 21st century. if anyone can stand up to that kind of pressure, it’s Porsche. one of the most established, if not untouchable, sports car makers on the planet, this company has nearly a century of engineering and technological heritage. on first impression, the Taycan is immediately my absolute number-one choice. Tech nerds are already arguing

about the relative statistical merits of the Tesla Model s versus the Taycan ‘on paper’ (both are insanely powerful and far faster than any mortal could ever handle). what clinches it decisively for me is quite simply the aesthetics. while the Tesla could - perhaps unkindly – be mistaken for a Mazda 6, the Taycan is a pure Porsche from a hundred paces. and when you’re paying over a hundred grand for something as special as this, European styling wins every time.
