The exhibition will bring these moments to life and will include a replica living room scene from the 1950s/60s, the opportunity to watch the first episode of Coronation Street, and a showcase of Tony’s personal items and photographs, brought together for the first time.

1950s Salford was full of terraced houses, cobbled streets, industrial sights and sounds, and this scene is set at the exhibition with specially created paintings by local artist David Coulter, who grew up in the same place and time as Tony. David’s paintings show his love for cities and capture the atmosphere and grittiness of urban surroundings.

The early life and career of Tony Warren, creator of Coronation Street, the world’s longest-running continuing drama, is to be remembered in an exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which is operated by Salford Community Leisure.

Four Miles from Manchester; Tony Warren’s Coronation Street runs from Saturday 21st october 2017 to Tuesday 3rd July 2018.

The exhibition will showcase various aspects of Tony’s life; documenting his childhood in Pendlebury, Salford, where he absorbed the streets, people and sounds surrounding him, eventually leading him into a career in scriptwriting. original scripts and other items from his early writing career will be on show as Four Miles from Manchester tells the story of the Salford legend’s journey to creating Coronation Street, an innovation of its time, telling stories of ordinary people on an ordinary street.

David Tucker of Tony’s estate, says: “Tony was an amazing writer and he was a fantastic man, who genuinely had an interest in anyone that he encountered. His knack for putting everyday drama down on paper and bringing it to life on our TV screens was second-to-none. I wanted the items from his career to be shared with the public and not shut away or sold. Tony approved an exhibition before he died.

I am sure that he would be as thrilled as I am that it will be in his native Salford.”

The campaign was launched on Valentine’s Day and the response has resulted in the full amount being raised.

Two years ago, the Christmas lights funding was withdrawn by Trafford Council. Since then, HBA have struggled to raise the funds needed, meaning that the lights were very limited last year.

Hale counts down to Christmas

Hale Business Association (HBA) has started counting down to Christmas, having raised £15,000 from local businesses for Hale’s Christmas lights.

Working with Hale-based PR and marketing agency Marketing Profile, a campaign was launched in which local businesses were asked to sponsor a graphic bauble – at a cost of £1,000 each.

Penny English, representative of HBA, commented on the fundraising initiative for 2017: “It has been increasingly difficult to raise monies for the lights – a fresh approach was needed. We were delighted with the proposal put forward by Marketing Profile – at no cost to us – and they have worked closely with us to generate interest and support. We are grateful to the businesses that have sponsored a graphic bauble and to other smaller businesses that have offered donations.

We are currently working with Trafford Council on planning requirements for signage in the village over the festive period.

“In 2017, we really want the whole village to come together to ensure that ‘Hale shines’. HBA is working hard with the lighting company to produce an impressive display. In support of HBA, one of its members GIFT & Home will be selling individual ‘Love Hale 2017’ red baubles at £4.99 each – meaning that everybody can get involved and support the village.

Bowdon Club boasts new state-of-the-art facilities Bowdon Club on South Downs Road in Bowdon unveiled its new state-of-the art squash facility – supported by Sport England – with a guest appearance by Nick Matthews oBE, the most decorated British squash player of all time.

Nick – who is a three-time British open Champion and double Commonwealth Games gold medalist, and whose achievements include a number 1 world ranking and three world titles – officially opened the new show court and provided an evening of world-class squash entertainment for the sell-out crowd of over 100 members.

The centrepiece of the £180,000 project – financed by the club’s own 10-year fundraising drive and an Inspired Facilities Grant of £75,000 from Sport England – is a brand-new, glass-backed, show court and, on the night, Bowdon’s own Adam Murrills, ranked 86th in the world, challenged Nick in an amazing showpiece game.

Community-conscious teenagers raised more than £300 and spent four days clearing, weeding, painting and planting to revitalise gardens surrounding The Counselling & Family Centre, Altrincham.

The 13-strong team wanted to “make a difference to a charity that itself makes a difference to so many local people” and supported the centre in Mayor’s Road as part of their National Citizen Service (NCS).

The teenagers from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Wellington School, Altrincham College of Arts and Ashtonon-Mersey High School, raised funds through online donations, pitching in a Dragons’ Den-style event at the BBC in MediaCity, plus completing a full marathon in fancy dress in Stamford Park.

They then spent days cutting back six-foot-high brambles, clearing overgrown bushes, weeding, filling tubs with flowers and bulbs, and painting rooms at the centre.

Woman Lawyer of the Year

The Managing Director of Blackstone Solicitors, Emma Nawaz, has been shortlisted from among the brightest and best of the legal profession for the Law Society of England and Wales’ Excellence Awards. The category for which she’s been nominated is Woman Lawyer of the Year.

Emma established Blackstone Solicitors in 2010 with just herself and a secretary opening an office in Hale. The firm has since grown to include 30 team members and, earlier this year, it opened an office in London’s Mayfair. Emma is a respected litigation lawyer, who has gained notoriety for her defence of Iranian clients in their fight against the high street banks.

The Law Society’s annual awards recognises the commitment, enthusiasm and passion given by solicitors when serving their clients, and which underpins the UK’s world-renowned legal system. Olympians open café in Altrincham

Top olympic athletes Fran Halsall, Jessica Varnish and Liam Phillips have opened the doors to their first business venture together, combining their mutual love of coffee with the aptly named Common Ground café in Altrincham. The café on Shaw’s Road, previously home to Mirabelle’s Café, sells a variety of both healthy and not-so-healthy treats, including organic baked goods and delicious cakes.

Speaking about the new venture, threetime olympian Fran said: “The whole idea came about just after the Rio olympics.

There’s a great vibe and movement happening in Altrincham, with plenty of inspiring restaurants and independent shops opening up. We used to eat here all the time, so when a unit became available, it was too good an opportunity to miss!”

The café is perfect for those who like to sit outdoors, with bi-fold doors at the front and back of the café that open up entirely to the outside.

“We’ve made the best use of space by installing bi-fold doors, which are amazing,” explains Fran. “They fully fold back, so people can sit and have their

coffee in the fresh air. At the other side of the café is another set of bi-fold doors, which lead to what we call the ‘Zen Den’, a relaxing courtyard and seating area. It’s minimalist and Scandinavian in style, with beautiful wooden tables and pastel green and grey decor, which makes it a beautiful space to enjoy a cuppa.” The open-plan style is also fabulous news for four-legged visitors, with Common Ground having an open-door policy for dogs: “In addition to our shared passion for sport and good coffee,” smiles Fran, “Jess, Liam and I are all dog lovers, so the café is definitely dog-friendly. our pets can sit in the window and watch the world go by while we’re serving the customers!”

Breast cancer survivors get glam for charity fashion show

A group of breast cancer survivors took to the catwalk and raised almost £2,000 to help prevent the disease in future generations. Proceeds from the sold-out fashion show, which took place at Spire Manchester Hospital’s new state-of-the-art building in Didsbury, will go to Prevent Breast Cancer, the UK’s only charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer. The evening saw 12 women, who had either fought breast cancer in the past or were still receiving treatment, model summer designs from Fuzzy Goose Boutique, a retailer with a showroom in Cheadle Hulme and which sells clothing, jewellery, gifts and accessories.

52-year-old Wendy Verber, who made her modelling debut at the show, was honoured to help achieve the charity’s goal of

making breast cancer a preventable disease. She said: “Five years ago, I thought I was at the end of a very short life, but here I am, a survivor. I was up on that catwalk with 11 other brave women, who have all lived to tell their tales too but, unfortunately, it’s not like that for everyone.

“While the night was certainly lots of fun, it was so important for raising awareness about breast cancer prevention while raising funds that will go towards the charity’s groundbreaking research projects. These projects will ultimately help reduce the number of women who are diagnosed or who die from the disease each year, so I’m honoured to have taken part.”

The event, sponsored by Spire, was hosted by Laura Finn from Prevent Breast Cancer and featured a speech by its Chairman and Consultant Breast Surgeon, Lester Barr. Lester said: “Around one in nine women and one in 1,000 men will develop breast cancer, with 55,000 people diagnosed each year.

We simply want to reduce these figures, but the only way we can do that is through research. As a charity, we receive no government funding, so fundraising events like these are crucial if we’re to continue working towards a breast cancer-free future.

COLIN BETHELL

“Property law is not always considered the most glamorous arm of the legal profession,” confesses Colin Bethell, head of the new conveyancing department at Pabla and Pabla Solicitors, “but, in terms of importance, property transactions often represent the most financially significant decisions in a significant number of people’s lives.”

Colin was born and raised in Manchester and, as a proud Mancunian, was always keen to practise locally after qualifying as a solicitor almost 10 years ago. He too is excited at the prospect of working with Pabla and Pabla to build on his existing links to the city and the Didsbury area in particular. The importance of building client relationships has always been a key factor in his legal endeavours, as Colin explains: “Prior to entering law, I worked for a large corporate, which certainly provided me with a number of key skills, which I have been able to transfer to my legal career. The Boardroom grew out of an organisation that Paul founded in 2012, Talk of Manchester, originally a big one-day conference event. It had drawn respected speakers, including the late Tim Bacon (Chairman and Co-founder of Living Ventures), Kids Allowed founder Jennie Johnson MBE, Brother UK MD Phil Jones MBE and former Ultimo boss Michelle Mone (now Baroness Mone).

"I started doing small events – around 20 or 30 people having dinner and networking – largely to promote the conference," says Paul, "but it occurred to me that most of the people who came were sales people trying to sell to each other. What's the point of that? It makes no sense at all. Even worse, if you did happen to be the only person in the room who owned a business, you'd have everybody else trying to sell to you...

“That's not a nice environment to be in, so we wanted to do something different... to recreate a version of the St James' Club of old for 21st century Manchester. I am a firm believer that if you put business owners together with a good meal and a glass of wine, they will find a level on which they can do business together. They can't help it."

Barbados’ Best Kept Secret The Lone Star Boutique Hotel and Restaurant is one of the Caribbean’s most exclusive destinations and attracts highprofile guests, such as Simon Cowell and Rihanna. Didsbury Magazine experiences how to holiday like a star…

As its name suggests, The Lone Star has always been exclusive. Originally built as a garage in the 1940s, it was the only stop on the west coast of Barbados licensed to sell petrol from a one-hand operated pump.

In 1996, the property was bought by English actor, Christian Roberts (best known for his role as Denham in the film To Sir, with Love) and he converted it into a paradise respite for the rich and famous. Today, its prime location in the exclusive St James area of the island continues to attract stars from all over the world.

It’s easy to see its appeal. The hotel has six luxury suites in total, making it the ideal getaway for people whom privacy and discretion is a priority. It has mastered that elusive combination of luxury and comfort, and its location is a winner – a stone’s throw from the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and offering every room a stretch of beautiful beach.

In the last few years the Hotel has undergone a superbly sensitive renovation, which has included owners buying the beach house next door, turning it into a sophisticated, spacious, three-storey, coral stone property, complete with a tropical garden and access to the beach.

There’s a nod to the site’s automobile history in the room names: the Cadillac and Lincoln penthouses; two ocean front suites, Buick and Studebaker; and the Shelby and Corvette deluxe rooms of the beach house.

The décor, a wash of white and a range of blue hues, is influenced by the hotels ocean location, and the design is quality elegance, with polished mahogany floors, four-poster beds and crisp linen.

Private dining is available, but it would be a shame to miss the buzzy atmosphere of the restaurant, which is also open to nonresidents. Known locally as the ‘Ivy of the Caribbean’, Lone Star has an unrivalled setting; walk down a magnificent staircase to beautifully laid tables on a wooden deck raised just off the sand, close to the water’s edge, and with open views across the ocean.

Whilst the ambience is informal, the chef delivers fine dining with a casual twist, and the sommelier is on hand to offer an extensive wine list. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the island’s favourite cocktail, a rum sour, at sunset.

Maybe I should have been a psychologist…”

Following the publication of a series of acclaimed short stories, this month sees the release of Caroline’s debut novel Beneath the Skin – a domestic noir set in Manchester and Cheshire and introducing four couples whose lives are steeped in lies, which are about to spectacularly unravel. The reviews to date have been dazzling.

ART IMITATING LIFE Caroline traces her passion for storytelling back to childhood; making up tales of grand romance inside her head. Years later, sat at her solicitor’s desk, she tentatively wrote the first few lines of a novel. The mother-ofthree believes her former legal life (criminal law, divorce, professional indemnity) has undoubtedly influenced her subject matter: “I’m captivated by people and the human

condition;” she explains, “how we’re all flawed and frail but put on a brave face when there’s so much going on beneath the skin. a solicitor is like a counsellor, effectively, you’re seeing people naked – raw and painful emotion laid bare. When I left the law, I became a volunteer mediator. This time, I heard not one but two or more points of view, two or more versions of truth, which is very much what story telling is about.”

“I LOvE MANCHESTER” Caroline originally landed in the city to study at the University of Manchester, and never left. I wonder what made her stay?

“There are too many reasons why I love Manchester to list them all,” she replies, “but they include the music, the eclectic mix of people and cultures, my family and friends, the fabulous trees! Plus, it’s only forty miles away from my home town of Sheffield.”

ADvICE FOR WOULD-BE NOvELISTS Undoubtedly, Caroline will inspire other writers to pick up the proverbial pen – what advice can she offer them?

“Sit down right now and make a start” advises Caroline. “Just that first paragraph

makes you feel great. I’m not very good at making notes when ideas occur, but that’s important too. Then write and write.

Don’t worry too much about grammar or structure, you can fiddle with that later.

Getting the first draft down feels wonderful.”

FAMILY, THE FUTURE AND FILM STARS Writing has taken a backseat this summer (“happily distracted by having all three daughters at home”), but fans can expect a second novel to hit the shelves in May 2018.

To relax, Caroline loves to holiday with her family, socialise with friends, and watch movies. Speaking of the big screen, if Beneath the Skin were to be made into a film, who would she like to take the leads?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

the importance of being breast aware and early detection Breast cancer is the most common cancer in females in the UK. One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. The good news is, the chances of surviving breast cancer are improving, with over 80% of people surviving beyond five years and 75% of people surviving beyond 10 years.

SELF – EXAMINATION as part of your own breast awareness, you should know what’s normal for you. all women should check themselves on a frequent basis; either day five of the menstrual cycle (with day one being the first day of the bleed) or, if there is no bleed, on a regular day of each calendar month.

The examination involves undressing the top half of the body and standing in front of a mirror under bright lighting. You should place the hands behind the head and move the elbows forwards and backwards. This allows you to look for dimples, tethering changes in the skin, and any new nipple inversion.

The breasts should then be touched between the two hands; feeling for irregularities, such as unusual swelling, lumps, redness, soreness or rashes – often easier in the shower with the lubrication of shower gel.

It’s important to feel for lumps under the armpits. This check can be repeated lying down. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact your GP. Men also need to also be aware that breast

cancer can affect them too, and they should also regularly check themselves for the same symptoms.

Nuffield Health Didsbury It’s approaching that time of year again, when the nights draw in and the opportunity to sit outside on a warm summer’s evening drifts away Statistically, the volume of gym users also peaks during this time, as people turn their efforts to more indoor-based activities.

Many people join a gym with the best of intentions, but not all will stick to their original goals. Quite often, people will get stuck in a routine and forget what they were trying to achieve.

admittedly, no one really enjoys having these tests done, as it provides a harsh picture of your overall health, but it did provide a really useful starting point on which to start my fitness journey. I now have a baseline on which to track my progress. I can be reassessed in three months’ time to see how much I have progressed – what better incentive can you get than seeing the positive result you can have on your overall wellbeing? as part of their network, Nuffield Health also provides in-depth health assessments at one of their three locations in Manchester – The Printworks, Manchester Diagnostic Suite and the Medical Centre at Salford.

Depending on the type of health assessment chosen, a minimum of 15 tests will be carried out by a physiologist, followed by a review with a doctor. The focus is very much on a preventative approach to health, with all assessments including a one-month membership to a local Fitness & Wellbeing Centre, so that the lifestyle and behavioural changes suggested by the physiologist can be put in to practice.

Next up – a personalised programme.

Whilst this is a core feature of pretty much every gym I have been a member of, the difference here is that this programme was

focused on helping me to improve my Health MOT results and, ultimately, achieve my goals. I was encouraged to carry out exercises I had never done before and was also shown exercises I could do with a friend. I find it hard to train alone, so having someone to help motivate me will not only make my gym sessions more enjoyable but it will push me harder too!

I’m looking forward to attending one of the ‘Meet our expert’ events in the next few months. These are free, themed events and an opportunity to speak with experts, who will share their knowledge to help you achieve your goals.

So, now the hard work begins…

Finding the work/life balance Sarah Parry, MMU Senior lecturer and Clinical Psychologist, functions best with umpteen projects on the go – and obviously, parenthood comes first. Mind you, even for this night owl, finding the balance isn’t easy.

This 32-year-old Hale mum-of-two says: “Having just one baby and completing my masters was tricky. learning on the job and starting my NHS doctorate with two youngsters under two proved trickier still. Basically, I try to parent as if I don’t work, and try to work remembering I am a parent.”

Changing young lives in Southern Romania overactive? Perhaps. Caring? Definitely. effective? Indisputably.

In 2003, prior to uni and throughout her studies, Sarah committed herself to the improvement of vulnerable and orphaned children’s lives in Southern Romania. She helped their carers, consulted with local and governmental officials, raised funds and, in 2007, formed a social enterprise boasting 400 British volunteers, including her own Manchester college pals. Summer schools and an after-care home for fourteen care leavers were opened and, throughout her endeavours, her University of Manchester lecturers offered their full backing.

“My experiences in Romania prepared me for clinical training and working with looked-after children here in the UK in my current post, alongside my academic work, as well as helping me fully appreciate those working in high-risk and high-stress environments.”

In fact, this July saw the publication of Sarah’s own practitioners’ guide, effective Self-Care and Resilience in Clinical Practice – advocating the value of compassion in helping people handle fatigue and burnout.

Supporting children who hear voices Sarah’s present focus is upon finding family and child volunteers for her team’s Young Voices study, a Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Manchester collaboration linked to the Voice Collective, based in Camden.

Conventionally, hearing voices and experiencing visions have strong connotations with acute mental illness. However, for youngsters, this is not usually the case. It is thought that about 8% of children and teens regularly hear voices others cannot and up to 75% experience this phenomenon as a one-off.

This implies hearing voices in childhood could be a developmental stage and eventually outgrown. Because little has been documented about child voice-hearing, Sarah and her colleagues are inviting families and children to come forward and assist in research, which will benefit everyone concerned and enable educationalists, mental health workers, doctors and, more importantly, the children and their parents themselves to understand further the phenomena.

BBC TV and Radio 5 are already on the case and there’s a slot on Horizon firmly in the 2018 diary. Anonymity, of course, will be paramount.

Changing minds about mental health

To mark World Mental Health Day, Fay Wertheimer meets Manchester Mind’s lindsey Cree and discovers how personal experience led her to a career centred on building understanding of mental health issues.

On World Mental Health Day, October 10th, Manchester Mind joins charities worldwide in highlighting mental health in the workplace. In 2014-2015, stress-related illnesses cost the UK 9.9 million working days.

One person who has been addressing this rising problem is Manchester Mind’s Mental Health Trainer lindsey Cree. Since 2016, she has topped up her three-hour awareness course with a three-hour workplace programme for practitioners, NHS staff, service users, council workers, community groups and businesses – in fact, anyone affected by mental illness-related work absence.

The highly approachable Ms Cree provides details of employers’ and employees’ legal requirements, and pinpoints warning signs of deteriorating mental health in colleagues and employees.

“The information delivered and activities devised hopefully help trainees understand what mental illness means for patients and their families,” explains lindsey.

“Communication and openness are key to reducing stigma, clarifying that mental ill health is no different from a physical ailment.”

lindsey says alertness to changes in behaviour are key to recognising mental health illness in colleagues: “Be on the alert if a colleague displays a sustained change in behaviour and motivation,” says lindsey. “ask how he or she is feeling. Have a chat. let them talk. and listen, it’ll make them feel valued. If, ultimately, they are signed off and if they agree, maintain some contact by text, letter, phone or email.

You see, any communication lines you establish will ease the other person’s anxieties when they return to work. and before they do come back, ask them in for a cuppa – make them feel welcome.”

Before moving into mental health work, lindsey had a career in nursery nursing.

Her decision to do so lay very close to home: “at 14, my 26-year-old son showed signs of mental illness,” says lindsey.

“Diagnosed with schizophrenia at 18, he was hospitalised until the age of 24 and is now in supported housing. Sadly, he has limited insight into his situation or any services available. When he was ill, I’d found coping with work and the isolation of being a carer almost unbearable. after his diagnosis and admission to the Priory, I realised other parents needed an outlet too and formed its

carers’ group. I also recognised mental health work was for me. Having seen both sides of the coin, I’ve been able to contribute to University of Manchester research and deliver programs throughout this great city – which is red-hot on the case.”

With World Mental Health Day now in its 25th year, are responses to and perceptions of mental illness changing? “10 years ago, the mere mention of psychiatric problems had people gasping,” admits lindsey, “but now they ask questions – both socially and at work.

There’s some way to go before we fulfil our broader brief – to make ‘mental health care a reality city-wide’ – but we’re getting there.”

Dreaming of a new build? George has a few things for you to consider first.

THINk LONG-TERM Unlike shirts or shoes, remember, houses don’t come with receipts: “Trends in clothing, for example, come and go,” says George, “and building styles are no different. However, you cannot change a house as easily as a shirt when it’s no longer deemed fashionable. This is why Tsiantar Architects take great care in guiding our clients and creating designs that will look good forever.”

THINk CLASSICAL When it comes to standing the test of time, classical period favourites – think Victorian, Georgian, edwardian, Modern, and Arts and Crafts – are always in vogue:

“With the possible exception of the 1970s,” explains George, “most styles from the past, if well designed and constructed, will always look good. The recent popularity of the rendered Arts and Crafts style has resulted in many fine examples.”

But, warns George, for every impressive period reproduction, there’s a “poor and clumsy copy” just around the corner: “Finding an architect who properly understands the proportion, features and details of the particular period is essential in order to avoid a pastiche half-clone of an original. The popularity of Arts and Crafts is generating some questionable interpretations, so care should again be taken when choosing your designer.”

THINk ABOUT HOW YOU LIVE Latest design trends are being driven by how we use our homes, especially when it comes to the kitchen’s new status as heart of the family home:

“It’s the hub of the house, and most family activities – which used to take place elsewhere – are now concentrated in one space,” says George. “We now eat, cook, relax, entertain, watch TV, work and play in the kitchen, and the space has expanded to accommodate these functions. Some of our new houses are even built without a formal dining room, and lounges are used less and less as we live a more relaxed lifestyle.

Another trend is for more and more spaces and furniture to have multiple uses, for example, a dining table used as much for supervised homework as eating, and snugs converting to home cinemas at the touch of a switch.”

THINk ABOUT TECHNOLOGY Tsiantar Architects are leading the way in creating homes that embrace advances in technology, minus a room full of wiring, computers and processors…

“The future now is wireless technology,” says George, “with everything from intelligent light bulbs to coffee machines all controlled (at a low cost) by speaking into your phone, an iPad, control hub (such as Amazon’s Alexa) or simply by a switch on the wall. Future-proofing our houses now is not about how it’s wired but how it’s not. We are currently equipping our houses with the next generation of Wi-Fi systems and Tesla charging stations.”

THINk ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT A home’s impact on the planet is, says George, what shapes each of Tsiantar’s creations and extensions: “Using the latest highly-insulated construction materials, coupled with efficient heating, cooling and ventilating systems, is the key trend that shapes our houses. Powering our environment with the sun’s heat and light, the ground and air’s latent heat, and recycling our rain and waste water now drive how we design, not only for our use in the here and now, but so we can simply ‘plug’ future technical features into our existing structures. That is true future-proofing.”

My favourite Manchester buildings For George, these designs will never fall out of fashion…

Midland Bank Building, king Street (Now Hotel Gotham) Created by architect Sir edwin Lutyens, it’s perfectly symmetrical, but with a quirkiness of detail, where nothing is quite as it should be, and this gives the building a subtle but special individuality.

The Edgar Wood Centre, Daisy Bank Road, Victoria Park one of Manchester’s most famous buildings. It was built in 1903 and is a typical Arts and Crafts design, but at its best and by one of the most progressive architects of the time – edgar Wood.

Royd House, Hale Road, Hale, Altrincham Also created by edgar Wood. This revolutionary 1914 design boasts the first concrete flat roof in england, but is still heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and Wood’s time spent in North Africa.

Manchester Town Hall Extension, St Peter's Square/Lloyd Street Built in 1938 by Vincent Harris, the extension is every bit as elegant and impressive as the Town Hall itself. I used to love walking between it and the curved library (Library Walk), despite the breath-taking wind, which brings me to…

The glass link between the Central Library and Town Hall Extension As with anything new and different, it’s had its criticism. Personally, I think it works brilliantly; keeping the curved facades visible, but adding a fantastically futuristic feature (think of the chrome villain in Terminator 2) in the ceiling and making the relationship between the buildings even more special.

Casa Ceramica‌ turning tiles into an art form

There was a time when tiles were little more than functional, water-busting necessities for bathroom walls and kitchen oors. But that was then and, thanks to Manchester-based luxury tile emporium Casa Ceramica, this is now – an era in which tiling is an integral part of creating amazing show-stopping spaces.

Casa Ceramica’s award-winning 6000 square foot showroom is a sight to behold; more akin to an art gallery than a retailer, and showcasing hand-selected tiles direct from the world’s best manufacturers. It was recently named Best Retail Showroom in the UK 2017 at The Tile Association Awards (TTA), and at its helm is Didsbury-born Matthew Armstrong and Duncan Cook, who hails from Chorley.

They’re passionate about tiles, and their enthusiasm for these space-changing ceramics is contagious.

FROM CHANCE MEETING TO AWARD WINNING “I met Duncan in a pub 17 years ago,” remembers Matthew. “He had a tiling business, and I was working for the previous owners of Casa Ceramica in Preston. We became good friends and, later, business partners. We took over from the previous owners eight years ago, and have gone from strength to strength.”

Indeed, the business now supplies tiles to destinations as far-flung as Hong Kong, and Matthew and Duncan have styled tiling for many big-name businesses, such as Nike, Ugg, Sketchers and Nando’s. Currently, they’re working with Starbucks, Dr. Martens and Primark – from shop floors to staff quarters, Casa Ceramica tiles have it covered, and there’s been huge success in the residential property arena too: “We recently completed a residential project in Ilkley in West Yorkshire,” reveals Matthew, “where we supplied over 1,000 square metres of some really beautiful, tiles for a master bathroom, which has just won the Best Use of Tiles in a Domestic Space at the TTAs, and the space is also

featured in this month’s Homes & Garden magazine.”

A UNIQUE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE Whilst Casa Ceramica doesn’t actually install the tiles, choosing to focus on retail instead, it is able to recommend external tried and tested tiling companies to clients.

The Casa Ceramica shopping experience is unique – there’s no hard sell or buy-goodbye at the old Trafford showroom: “Customers say no one has given them the attention and expertise that we have,” says Duncan. “It’s because we are interested in what the customer is trying to achieve design-wise; we advise them on good practice and help them do the very best job.

We pride ourselves on the service that we offer.”

“The reaction we get from customers is a really, really positive one in terms of the shopping experience,” adds Matthew.

“When people come in, we leave them to look around, make coffee for them, and build a relationship. Whether they need a plumber or they’re looking for a kitchen company, we can recommend and advise on every part of their project.”

THE CHANGING FACE OF TILING Thanks to developments in technology, and tiles becoming much more creative (both in size and style), how people use them has changed dramatically too – gardens are tiled, even the exterior of buildings: “Ten years ago, tiles used to be a bit of an afterthought,” says Matthew. “Nowadays, people are after a more designer look, and tiles have become a much more important part of the overall design function and are

considered in the early planning stages.”

Casa Ceramica caters for all budgets and style requirements. And, if money is no object, there’s a tile costing £2,500 per square metre available…

“It’s made from Italian marble,” explains Matthew, “and is very, very exclusive. It can be found in Bulgari hotels across the world, and we were the first retailer in the UK to display the material.”

RETAILING THE HOTTEST NEW INTERNATIONAL TRENDS The guys reveal that large tiles (3.2m x 1.6m) and both the concrete/industrial and marble effects are currently on-trend. Much like high-end fashions, designer tile styles take a while to trickle down to the high street but, with Casa Ceramica leading the market in the international design stakes, there’s no need to wait.

Casa Ceramica is now in its 32nd year of trading. What are the guys’ plans for the future?

“When we took over the business in 2010,” says Duncan, “if somebody had said to us ‘where do you see yourself in seven years’ time?’, we’d never have said: ‘oh, in a showroom in Manchester and having won lots of awards – so, anything is possible...”

“And there’s always room for improvement,” smiles Matthew.

“We just want people to know that tiles don’t have to be boring,” concludes Duncan.

And, as if to prove the point, a walk into their boardroom reveals a giant designer tile featuring David Bowie.

ell, honestly, what rightminded girl would willingly go anywhere near a compost heap? especially in autumn. Sorties through rain, wind and mud, only to be met by worms and squadrons of flies dive-bombing my hair. No thank you. I hate going to our compost bin so, for the last five years, I’ve ignored his Lordship’s unsubtle hints, leaving him to repeatedly trek up to our compost bin at the back of the garden.

Hmmm, five years? That does seem rather a long time. Perhaps he has a point.

Don’t get me wrong, as a pretty keen gardener now, I totally get how important it is to turn our garden waste and kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost to keep our garden soil and crops healthy; it’s just that I really don’t like all the creatures that live in compost bins. But, in view of his tantrum, last week, with true Brit grit, I decided it was time to start helping out, especially as it’s me who loves feeding my plants with the black gold compost that those scraps turn into.

So, I got hold of everything I needed: His Lordship’s battered, old helmet from his younger Harley Davidson days, tick; biohazard suit, recently purchased, tick; trusted Marigolds, tick. And I am happy to report that, having watched in amusement as I made several forays into enemy territory in my particularly fashionable ensemble, his Lordship has finally agreed to return. Alas, minus the gin.

If you aren’t composting at home yet, here are some pointers. First up, composting your garden and kitchen waste at home gives you free, nutrient-rich food for your plants. Instead of throwing your green waste into your green council bin, buy yourself a compost bin, pop it in a corner of your garden, and off you go. Sit it in a reasonably sunny site on bare soil, and choose a place where you can add ingredients to the bin and get the compost out easily. Try and aim for a 50/50 mix of ‘greens’ (e.g. vegetable peelings, fruit waste, teabags, grass cuttings, coffee grinds, old flowers) and 'browns' (e.g. crushed egg shells, cereal boxes, loo rolls,

scrunched-up paper and cardboard, garden prunings, shredded confidential documents, vacuum bag contents). It will take a minimum of between nine and 12 months for your compost to be ready, just keep on adding greens and browns as it rots down, and keep mixing to ensure the air is circulating. Compost aerators are a useful tool for this job (organiccatalogue.com). once your compost has turned into a dark, crumbly, moist soil, and is giving off an earthy, fresh smell, it’s ready to use.

Just scoop it out and use to enrich your borders, pots, lawn and veggie growing areas. If you have little or no garden, consider a wormery. Wormeries are containers which turn organic waste into a great liquid plant food; they are pretty small, ideal for when space is tight. See wigglywigglers.co.uk for details.

Recently named best city centre restaurant

by Cheshire Life, it soon became obvious that this was a high-end Indian restaurant.

Another clue was the fact that this global group – part owned by the legendary Bollywood singing star Asha Bhosle – has branches in Saudi, Kuwait and oil-rich Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Bahrain, where they don't exactly scrimp on the best ingredients or penny-pinch on dining out. our homework findings were verified by a menu that features not just your run-ofthe-mill samosas, but delicate pastries stuffed with venison. Also featured is Duck Seekh Kebab, Guinea Fowl Tikka, organic Scottish Salmon Biriyani, Truffle Naan Bread and, of course, Lobster Panchphoran (whole lobster), all impeccably sourced. Then there's the restaurant itself – ultra chic and discreetly housed in a Grade II-listed building in Peter Street.

This 100-cover, first-floor dining room is burnished in gold, black and purple, with intricate filigree pendant lighting. Below is the BolliBar – smart, sophisticated, and serving signature cocktails and small plates.

The main menu is a treasure trove of irresistible spice and flavour combinations, coupled with those top-notch ingredients. even the papadums were special – the crispiest shards served with tastesensation chutneys, including: pineapple, smoked chilli and mustard seeds; green apple and blueberry; tomato, ginger and prunes; and minted yoghurt with coriander.

We started proper by sharing aforementioned Venison Samosas, which lived up to their luxury billing; crisp, flaky, non-greasy pastry triangles enveloping subtly spiced minced venison with green peas and raisins. A sweet and savoury treat.

Time then to ‘explore the Tandoor’... and what stunning discoveries we made.

The Chilli Garlic King Prawns – four wild monsters trawled from the deeps of the Bay of Bengal – were sensational.

Marinated with chilli, garlic and curry leaves before being baked in the traditional clay oven, they were right up there with the best we'd ever tasted. The tandoor also produced Barrah Kebab – amazingly succulent melt-in-the-mouth

lamb chops sourced from Lancashire, marinated in yogurt, ginger, garlic, cumin and garam masala, and cooked to perfection.

Last of our mains, one of head chef Ashwani Rengta's signature dishes and the most popular on the menu, was Kodi Curry – chicken cooked Hyderabadi style with yoghurt and coconut milk, and topped with crispy fried spinach; light, creamy and far more elegant than korma.

Perfect Palao Rice and Truffle Naan made fine accompaniments.

Desserts, never a strong suit in many Indian restaurants, brought a celebratory New York-style Cheesecake with a wonderful almond and pistachio base and fresh seasonal fruits, and an excellent exotic Blood orange and Caramel Kulfi finished with basil seeds. A bottle of fresh citrus-zingy Argentine TorrontésChardonnay made for the ideal wine match.

Starting with Thai Garlic and Chilli King Prawns was the right choice – juicy king prawns and just enough sauce to mop up at the end. For the main course, we chose one of their signature dishes – Chimichurri Chicken Butterfly Steak. This was perfection! Spicy, succulent and light.

After dinner, and having been defeated by just two courses, we went outside to the shisha area. Having never tried shisha before, our server educated us on what to do and how to do it. our frozen apple and vanilla flavour was a big hit.

We shall visit again – especially for the shisha!

We visited for a bustling Sunday lunch service. The staff were attentive and helpful. We decided, as it was a Sunday, that we may as well have starters as well as a main course! The Soup of the Day happened to be Mushroom and Truffle oil, an all-time favourite of ours. It was an absolutely delicious homemade treat and, served with crusty bread, proved very filling and could easily be eaten as a main. our Sunday lunch itself was divine – Roast Beef and Roast Lamb, both served with all the trimmings, including huge Yorkshire Puddings. For just £14.50, this is an absolute bargain. The portions were massive and we couldn’t finish it!

I started with Isle of Man Scallops – cooked with chilli, garlic and parsley, beautifully presented, and smelling divine.

Sticking with the fish theme, I opted for the Roast Arctic Salmon with charred asparagus and smoked garlic mayonnaise, mainly because I saw someone else with it and it looked awesome! The dish did not disappoint and, although it was light and fresh, it was very filling, and I didn’t have room for dessert. Perfectly paired with a large glass of Gavi di Gavi Nuovo Quadro, this was a lovely lunch option.

The Con Club really is a great addition to Altrincham, and the team are an asset to the business. A laidback, cool place to be with a brilliant vibe and tasty food.

Alderley edge is lucky to have so many dining options, but this all-time favourite is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon and probably the most chilled out place along the strip – a lovely spot to sit outside, have a glass of wine and watch the world go by. I’d definitely recommend this restaurant and would like to return to try the Chateaubriand, which looked awesome!

The old courtroom at The Courthouse Hotel has been converted into Barristers Restaurant & Bar. Founded by brothers oliver and Dominic Heywood, this iconic venue boasts 90 covers, each serving British seasonal menus led by executive Chef Stephen Tuke (Chester Grosvenor). The walls are adorned with portraits of famous past convicts by local artist James Blankhorn.

Service is exemplary, with no detail spared. You can enjoy a GNT in the dock before taking your seat in the judge’s chair which overlooks the courtroom? The Padron Peppers – deep fried and covered in sea salt and onion mayonnaise – provided a moreish appetiser, as did the Yellow Fin Tuna with Cannellinis, Fennel and Tomato Press and Salt and Pepper Squid – prepared with detail and taste.

The Herefordshire Beef Fillet main, served with parsley mash, salsify and caramelised celeriac, is one of Barrister’s best sellers and, at under £25, is excellent value. The 10oz Rib-eye is grass-fed Herefordshire and Yorkshire beef, hung for at least 21 days and further matured locally for 10 days, again superb value at £21.

Before the end of the year, 10 luxury bedrooms will be available in the wings of the building, with a further 40 bedrooms being added at the rear of the site in 2018.

Steak lovers of Manchester will be overjoyed with the new Beefeater in West Didsbury.

The restaurant’s bright, light interior and mouth-watering menu caters for all.

The brand-new restaurant is warm and welcoming, and offers a wide array of brilliant meal choices.

The rain clouds parted as we sat down at our plush window seat inside the Hilton’s Cloud 23 bar, giving us a clear and spectacular view across the city of Manchester.

The Bubble & Berries Afternoon Tea, priced at £35, wasn’t just a treat for the tummy, but for the eyes too.

Piled high on autumnally decorated trays and boards were a selection of wonderful jellies, bagels, cakes and scones, including: Beetroot-cured Salmon Bagels topped with Cream Cheese; Caviar Blinis with Pomegranate Pearls; Ham and Redcurrant Croque Monsieur; and Butternut Squash and Manchego Cheese Quiches. Such savoury delights were followed by classic Scones with Raspberry Jam and Kir Royale Clotted Cream, Freeze-dried Chocolate-dipped Strawberries, Berry Frangipane Slices, Bellini Curd Tarts, and Pink Champagne and Blueberry Jelly Shots. All complemented by a selection of teas and a glass of fizz.

A surprise complimentary vodka, cranberry and freshly squeezed lime cocktail, served over crushed ice and complete with edible flower, perfected a truly lovely afternoon tea experience.

Rump, Porterhouse and Fillet are just three of a wide variety of steaks available. The Beefeater also caters for meat-free diets, with dishes such as the Vegan Burger and Roast Vegetable Linguine featuring on the menu.

Loaded Potato Dippers, served with cheese, sour cream and bacon (optional), along with juicy Arrabiata Meatballs got us off to a good start, followed by the Crispy Chicken Burger with tabasco coating and, of course, steak.

8oz Sirloin to be exact, served with lettuce, slow-roasted tomato, grilled mushroom and ultimate triple-cooked chips.

Rocky Road Sundae and gooey Mississippi Mud Pie completed the meal – heavenly for chocolate lovers!

Much to my pleasant surprise, I enjoyed top-notch food at this new-look Beefeater.

A WEEK IN MY LIFE Dawn McGruer, Founder of and Head Trainer at digital marketing and social media academy Business Consort, shares a week in her life…

MONDAY Monday mornings can be a bit manic and are usually spent catching up with my team in the Wilmslow office, planning our content for the week ahead and discussing what activity we can push on our website and social media platforms.

It’s also a chance to review upcoming courses. We host 32 options each month, across face-to-face and online formats – it certainly keeps us on our toes! It’s important that we dedicate time to reviewing student progress, assessing learning experience and discussing how we can improve our offering through quizzes, practical exercises or exam simulations. We’ll also make a concerted effort to review the customer journey and encourage our enquiries team to use feedback from students to enhance web content, for instance.

We’ll often spend Monday afternoons on client strategy and training programmes – we host in-house sessions with our clients to develop their business through digital marketing. In addition, our online ‘power hours’ are perfect for assisting their marketing teams with the implementation – it’s like being their virtual marketing consultant!

I tend to cook on Monday evenings and prepare for the week ahead – if I’m going away, I leave my partner easy-to-heat, healthy meals.

TUESDAY Training in London means a 5am start for me, so I grab breakfast on the train and use the time to get some work done. If I’m in Manchester, it’s a slightly later start to the day, 6am, and I’ll make sure I get my caffeine fix en route! our London office is right next to the Gherkin, so it’s in the heart of the financial district and is a real hub of energy. Having

a base in the capital allows us to widen our net and be considered a major player within the industry.

I’m staying the night in London, so I arrange to meet up with friends and grab a bite to eat. There are so many places to choose from, but I absolutely love Hakkasan and can’t resist their Morning Glory Stir Fry! WEDNESDAY Wednesday morning is spent travelling back up to Manchester to host a corporate in-house training session. even after 12 years in the job, I still get a massive kick from running the courses and love equipping people with the skills they need to climb the career ladder and deliver results. It’s always interesting to go into workplaces and find out what they need from digital marketing and what their current strategy is missing, whether that’s email marketing, Google Analytics or social media.

It’s our job to tailor our courses to a team’s specific needs and make sure they get everything they need from us. We work on the basis that each company will have its own reasons for calling us in, so it’s important that we prepare adequately for each one and don’t treat them as just another number on our register.

THURSDAY Today is a chance to meet with the team to update our video content for use on our website and emailers. We recently ran a special ‘summer school’, which was a five-week, free course of bitesize webinars, created for busy professionals wanting to improve their online marketing skills. The portal offered students short snippets of training and gave them a ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ library option to add further courses.

The team and I review how the summer school was received and look at how it can be adapted for various points in the year and how it can be improved for next year. The feedback was extremely positive and it highlighted a clear appetite for such a format.

Later, I meet my partner, Andrew, for drinks and dinner. With us both travelling so much for work, we make sure that we switch off and spend time together when we can.

FRIDAY I spend the majority of the morning speaking with our lovely diploma students, providing support and mentoring in preparation for submitting assignments and sitting exams. As they’re studying for their diplomas as part of their current roles, it’s a chance to discuss their campaigns and advise on generating leads and improving conversions.

We’ve recently added four new Digital Marketing Institute-accredited specialist diplomas to our offering. They are: search marketing; social media marketing; strategy and planning; and a qualification in digital and social selling created especially for sales and business development professionals, so we’re looking forward to helping more students flourish in these areas.

After a quick team catch-up and a round of client calls, it’s pens down for us all at 4.30pm for an early start to the weekend.

Andrew and I cherish our weekends, and we’re usually found anywhere that involves food, drink, music and friends!

NHS hearing aids are limited to certain sizes and technology levels, lagging a few generations behind the private sector.

How should I keep my ears clean?

The ear is self-cleaning and normally does not need to be cleaned. Using cotton buds, ear plugs or hearing aids can cause wax blockage. Olive oil drops help to soften/loosen the wax. If it still does not clear naturally, you should seek professional advice about microsuction or other wax removal procedures.

Is it safe to listen to music with headphones?

If the volume is kept to a safe, low level, yes. However, exposure to noise, either from leisure activities or at work, can cause damage to the inner ear and result in hearing loss and/or tinnitus, which is usually irreversible, but can be helped with hearing aids.

The only way to be sure is to protect your hearing.

What are the key features of the CEM 11 Plus exams?

CEM is the exam board used by most grammar schools in and around South Manchester. The main feature of CEM is that each exam is composed of individuallytimed sections on different subjects. Typically, there will be more questions than are likely to be answered in the time provided, therefore, your child’s time management skills will play a crucial role.

When should my child start tuition for their 11 Plus exams?

Bond, one of the leading providers of 11 Plus study materials, recommend starting preparation at the beginning of Year 5. Before tuition begins, encourage your child to read challenging fiction to expand their vocabulary, as this plays an important role in the papers.

The best way to get started?

If your child hasn’t tackled 11 Plus questions before, the CGP Practise & Learn book range is a great place to start. Children find their layout fun and approachable.

As they gain confidence, introduce full papers. Mark each subject separately to see where their weaknesses lie. If you combine this with a tutor, it’s a great way to accelerate progress, as the tutor will focus their attention on the areas that need the most improvement.

My GP says I need a knee replacement. I’ve heard about personalised knee replacements (PKR).

What are these?

Technology has been developed to improve outcomes in knee replacement surgery. By undertaking a preoperative scan of your knee (CT or MRI), a threedimensional model can be made of the knee/leg. From this, either patient-specific instrumentation can be made or a customised knee replacement implant can be produced. Unlike more traditional methods, both techniques allow usage of instruments that are designed specifically for your knee and improve the alignment of your knee at the time of surgery.

What are advantages of PKR? The personalised knee replacements of either type are less invasive to perform and result in less trauma to the knee. The research would suggest that individuals having PKR can potentially have less pain, less swelling, quicker return of movement, and a shorter length of stay in hospital.

Is PKR available through the NHS? The technology required to produce these implants comes at a cost. Unfortunately, it is not a cost that the NHS can carry in current climates. Currently, PKRs can generally only be undertaken privately.

PENSION V ISA V LISA So, ISA or Pension?

Pensions provide a raft of tax planning opportunities that ISAs simply cannot compete with: •

Income tax relief on contributions, worth between 20% to 45%

•

Corporation tax relief for the employer

•

NIC savings are also possible if a salary sacrifice scheme is in place

•

A pension does not sit on your estate for IHT purposes.

Whilst both these tax wrappers will grow tax free, the pension will enjoy cumulative growth from a higher starting point and, therefore, will be worth proportionately more in years to come.

When taking benefits, 25% is available tax free from a pension and the rest is subject to income tax, thus reducing the net benefit.

ISAs are less complex and start to look more attractive when it comes to taking benefits; the ability to draw tax-free sums whenever you choose is a big plus. Pensions require you to tie up your funds until your mid to late 50s (depending on your age).

An important point we consider is the tax rates of our clients at each stage.

Someone receiving higher rate tax relief when funding the pension, who is then able withdraw funds as a basic rate taxpayer, will have benefited greatly from the pension.

So, from a tax perspective, it's hard to better a pension. Of course, there are many other things to consider; first

and foremost – time horizon and cash flow. Can you commit monies for the time period required for a pension?

Many young people will be saving towards housing deposits or needing to fund other shorter-term costs, in which case an ISA is a better call.

Finally, not to be forgotten is the LISA (Lifetime ISA). This provides a tax incentivised savings wrapper for those under 40, with less restrictions than a pension.

ASK THE EXPERTS Who is suitable for DIEP flap breast reconstruction procedure?

You should be a non-smoker, with enough tissue on your lower tummy to make a breast, and not be overweight i.e. BMI over 30. You should be free from diabetes and other major health issues, excluding cancer treatment. Any radiotherapy or chemotherapy should have finished at least six months prior to surgery.

How is the surgery performed?

The DIEP flap procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between six to eight hours. The skin and fat from the lower part of the tummy are lifted up on one or two small blood vessels, which are then carefully chased through the tummy muscles until they are big enough to join up to vessels in the chest using microsurgery.

What are the benefits over the more traditional breast reconstruction procedures?

It is considered to be the gold standard in breast reconstruction, and the key benefits are that it gives the most natural feeling, ages with you, maintains the strength of your core musculature, and never needs any further surgery. The added bonus is that you also gain a tummy tuck by using the abdomen tissue.

Greater Manchester charity secures over £4.3 million in UN funding to help people liberated from ISIS in Iraq UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has announced that it will be awarding Human Appeal, a humanitarian aid charity based in Greater Manchester, over £4.3 million to distribute aid in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which has recently been liberated from ISIS.

• A partnership with UN’s World Food Programme to distribute 360,000 parcels • UNHCR partnerships – shelter kit and NFI distributions in Mosul for 216,000 • UNHCR partnership – protection of civilian programme in and around Mosul • UNOCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) partnership – rehabilitation of 30 schools in west Mosul, 21,000 beneficiaries • UNOCHA partnership – water trucking clean water in west Mosul, 25,000 beneficiaries • Mobile specialist medical clinic in camps outside Mosul, 15,000 beneficiaries • Livelihoods programme to support 100+ widows in Iraq.

The UNHCR has awarded the money so that the charity, whose headquarters are in Cheadle, can distribute core relief items to150,000 people living across Mosul.

The fund will also allow Human Appeal to extend their emergency shelter response project by providing 216,000 people in the war-torn city with emergency shelter kits and ‘sealing-off kits’ for families living in partially destroyed homes. The funding will also help support research into the crisis facing people displaced by the conflict within Iraq.

The latest funding from the UNHCR now brings the total value of Human Appeal aid programmes in Iraq close to £20 million.

At present, Human Appeal is one of the few aid agencies with offices inside Mosul delivering aid to its people and, of all NGOs (non-governmental organisations), has one of the biggest humanitarian responses in the city. In fact, Human Appeal was the first NGO to respond to the west of Mosul and currently has 200 staff responding to this population in need. Other Human Appeal programmes in Iraq include:

Human Appeal received widespread coverage for their Muslims for Manchester campaign in May, which saw them raise over £28,000 for the victims of the Manchester Arena attack. This year, Human Appeal has raised over £170,000 for UK people in need, such as rough sleepers or victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan alone.

Withington Girls’ School A-Level And GCSE Results 2017

Withington Girls’ School has achieved another set of outstanding results in A-level and GCSE examinations, which has seen them ranked in recent national league tables as the top girls’ independent school in the north of England.

The school’s Sixth Form cohort of 69 girls achieved exceptional A-level results, with 91% of subjects taken securing A*, A or B grades, an impressive 29% being at the elite A*, and the vast majority will now take up their places at their first-choice university. At GCSE, year 11 pupils celebrated their success, attaining 93% grades A* and A, or 9-7 under the new numerical grading system, and A* was the average grade achieved.

In computer science and ICT (the ECDL GCSE equivalent), 100% of grades were A*, and in mathematics, biology and physics, 91% of entries in each subject were graded A*.

Withington’s consistently high levels of achievement have prepared them to go on to popular university destinations to study for a wide range of degree courses. Of 64 students heading to university this year, 54 have gained places at a Russell Group university (84%), with others going to other top-ranked universities, including St Andrews and Lancaster.

Ten girls – who represent more than 14% of the cohort – will take up their places at Oxford or Cambridge to read for degrees in a variety of subjects, including classics, fine art, engineering, history, medicine and PPE (philosophy, politics and economics). As in previous years, medicine is a popular choice, and more than a quarter of Withington’s Class of 2017 leavers will go on to study for a medical-related degree. Meanwhile, interest in the arts subjects remains strong, and three pupils are now able to take up their places to study art, with one going on to study fine art at Oxford.

Withington will be holding open days during the autumn term. There will be opportunities to visit their Junior and Senior Schools on 9th and 11th November and a Sixth Form event is being held on 3rd October.

Manchester Grammar School boys celebrate outstanding A-Level results Students from Didsbury and surrounding areas who are pupils at The Manchester Grammar School are celebrating exceptional A-level results. Boys who study at The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) collected their results as news came through that MGS had once again earned outstanding grades; a third of all results (36%) were at the coveted A* grade, a record for the school.

Along with A-level and International A-level results, MGS pupils received Cambridge Pre-U examination results in a number of subjects. The Pre-U is a challenging alternative to A-level and has its own grading system. The highest Pre-U grade, a Distinction One (D1), is a grade above A*, whilst a D2 is equivalent to an A*.

There were also a number of exceptional individual performances.

Both Limeng Zhu, 18, and Cletos Iacovides, 17, both from Didsbury, achieved a remarkable clean sweep as both were award 4 A*s. Tom Appleby, 18, also from Didsbury, achieved 2 A*s and a Distinction Two, and has an offer to study Italian and Spanish at

Pembroke College, Oxford. Meanwhile, Adib Badhri, 18, achieved 2 A*s and a Distinction Two, and has an offer to study modern and medieval languages at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

Mharab Choudhury, 18, from Burnage, achieved 2 A*s and 1 A and will be off to Magdalen College, Oxford. Furthermore, 19 pupils were awarded A* grades in all their subjects, six of whom achieved four A* grades – a tremendous achievement. 76 boys achieved a clean sweep of A* and A grades. 54% of all Pre-U grades awarded to MGS pupils were D1 or D2, another outstanding performance.

Oxford and Cambridge offered places to 22 MGS pupils in 2017.

Other leading universities to which MGS boys will be heading this autumn include Imperial, UCL, LSE, Durham, Warwick, york, KCL, Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds.

With an overall pass rate of 100%, a third of all grades being an A or an A* and 96% of girls meeting their university offers, the girls have given themselves every opportunity to continue to flourish as they progress to university or to gap year experiences.

Outstanding individual successes include: Helena Lewis, who achieved 3 A* grades and is going to study biological sciences at Lancaster University; Ellie Jagger, who is going on to study geography at the University of Liverpool after achieving 2 A* and 1 A grade; Scarlett Summerfield who, with 1 A* and 2 A grades, is off to University College Durham to study philosophy; and Amy Rhodes, who will study medicine at the University of Sheffield, thanks to her 3 A grades, following a gap year in industry.

The school is also keen to acknowledge the performance of Lower Sixth students, who have started, in the most part, the new linear A-level programme and have done brilliantly – including new Head Girl, Rowdah Charbak, who has achieved 4 A grades at AS. Well over half of all AS grades are at grade A or B and a third are at grade A; this reflects the school’s continued commitment to academic excellence, as recently reported in The Good Schools Guide.

AESG is also thrilled to report fantastic GCSE success and its best results since 2014.

A* grades achieved in mathematics have increased by 50%, and 87% of all separate science results were either an A or an A*. In addition, 10% of pupils achieved a full set of A and A* grades, and over 95% of all grades were A* to C. The school is celebrating some fantastic individual successes, with Jewel Bennett achieving A* in all subjects (which included two Grade 9s in English language and literature and, for further mathematics, A with distinction). Ella Myers achieved straight A* and two Grade 9s, as did Isabella Vickers, who secured full UMS marks in her entire GCSE history paper.

MGS rugby star bound for Oxford A young rugby star from The Manchester Grammar School is Oxford bound after a superb performance in his A-level examinations. Charlie Pozniak, 18, of Didsbury, achieved 2 As and a Distinction Two (D2), and has an open offer to study history at Oxford this autumn. Cilla The Musical Palace Theatre: 21-25 November Cilla is a new musical adapted by BAFTA-winning Jeff Pope from the critically acclaimed hit ITV TV series of the same name. MUSICALS Sunset Boulevard Palace Theatre: 23 October – 4 November Ria Jones and Danny Mac star in this stunning production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical. Sunset is a terrific story of seduction, madness and fading stardom, and is filled with fabulous music performed by a full orchestra.

Acosta Danza The Lowry: 12-14 October Acosta Danza is the brand new dance company from international dance icon Carlos Acosta. As part of their first ever UK tour, Carlos himself will perform and the company will present works by, amongst others, Cuban choreographer Marianela Boan and international artists Jorge Crecis and Goyo Montero.

Jubilee Royal Exchange Theatre: 2-18 November With the social and political turmoil of 2017 in mind, Derek Jarman’s iconic 1977 film Jubilee is remixed and adapted for the stage by Chris Goode.

Toyah Wilcox, one of the film’s original cast members, leads the cast in a fiery, riotous production of anarchy, violence and culture wars, with a heavy coating of red, white and blue.

ELF the Musical The Lowry: 24 November – 14 January Is there a show more Christmassy than ELF? We don’t think so. Ben Forster, who starred as Buddy in the West End production, reprises his role here, alongside Liz McClarnon as Jovie, in a production that will have you singing and laughing all the way home.

GOING ELECTRIC… The Government has been very vocal recently about its commitment to getting us all driving electric cars. It’s been announced that by 2040 the only new cars permitted to be sold will be electric, and there’s been a lot of talk about banning petrol and diesel cars from cities before that. This has split the motoring world. Half of us car lovers want to be ‘early adopters’ and get into electric cars first – to be pioneers and stay ahead of the pack. The other half want to enjoy ‘classic’ internal combustion motoring while they still can – to hear the sound of a well-tuned exhaust note before such things die out altogether.

For the first half, the likes of Tesla have done a great job of beginning to make all-electric cars an everyday reality, albeit at a price. But this technology has inevitably trickled down, and now it’s possible to go

all electric for no more than the price of an average family car. The BMW i3 has been around for a while now and, with over 8,000 vehicles sold in the UK since launch, it’s the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment. Now the success story is set to continue with a major refresh, new technology and the addition of a newer sportier variant – the BMW i3s.

With a higher output, model-specific chassis technology, enhanced handling and design features, the i3s offers driving pleasure along with zero local emissions, premium quality and a new level of connectivity technology. Both models draw their energy from the lithium-ion high-voltage battery, and both feature the unmistakable styling cues derived from their far more expensive i8 stablemate. The range starts from £34,000 and is available now.

Meanwhile, for the other half who still want the sound and the fury, here’s something from the opposite end of that premium compact segment – the Audi RS3.

This segment is overcrowded with contenders at the high-performance end – there’s the Volkswagen Golf R, the Mercedes-AMG A45, the BMW M135i, and the slightly less powerful but much more stylish Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio, which I’ve been a fan of for some years.

What all these hot hatches have in common is a great noise. Popping, snorting, roaring and rumbling from their great big scallywag exhausts. And, for that, the RS3 is perhaps the winner.
