Editor’s letter Welcome to our Christmas issue!

I think it’s fair to say, that this has been a year like no other.

And it looks like Christmas is going to be rather different too.

At this moment in time, we’re not sure if we can enjoy the usual festivities with our family and friends or if we have to postpone family gatherings until who knows when in 2021.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Christmas. If anything, we need to make it extra special with or (most unfortunately) without family and friends.

The Queen once referred to 1992 as an ‘annus horribilis’, a Latin phrase meaning ‘horrible year’. Well, I reckon 2020 will go down in history as an ‘annus horribilis’ for the world as a whole.

I’ve been busy compiling our ultimate Gift Guide (page 21) to help you choose the perfect present for your loved ones, so grab a mug or glass of whatever you fancy and tick off your Christmas gift list.

There’s also lots to read and some fabulous competitions too, so make sure you enter.

Of course, our annual Christmas Charity Ball was cancelled, along with all of our other events. This meant our chosen charities suffered; fingers crossed, as we move into the new year, we will be able to share lots of our 2021 events with you.

This has been a challenging year for business, so thank you to all of our clients old and new for your support. These are tough times and lots of small local businesses won’t survive, so try and shop/eat/stay local whenever you can. I’m sure many of us didn’t know what was actually on our doorstep until lockdown happened!

Tune into local band’s uplifting NHS tribute

Why not have a watch and listen to local band Jon Vivant for a much-needed lift this Christmas?

Their track December was originally released back in 2014 and was played on Radio 2. After revisiting it recently, the band realised just how much the lyrics resonate with the times we are currently living in. The song was written about the nursing staff of the NHS and their enduring spirit and commitment to caring for others. The band says that if it can give a bit of pleasure and lift a few spirits, they will be really happy.

Kit Stockton from family-run designer furniture retailer Stocktons, based in Ancoats, is appealing to fellow businesses to support local charity The Toy Appeal and help raise £70,000.

This year, more than ever, the prospect of no presents to open at Christmas is a stark reality for an increasing number of children across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. And with all fundraising events in 2020 having to be cancelled, The Toy Appeal is relying on funds, rather than toy donations, because of coronavirus. For seven years, The Toy Appeal founders, Cheshire couple Dee and Chris Drake, have raised funds to bring some of the region’s most deprived children Christmas joy with a toy sack just for them. Each sack has eight toys specific to the child’s age and costs the charity around £25. This year, The Toy Appeal is hoping to deliver over 6,000 toy sacks across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Others have provided much-needed storage facilities, where the toys can be stored throughout the year.

Didsbury community champion to be honoured with a coveted British Citizen Award

Arriving in the UK from Malaysia at just 18, Bee Bee enrolled herself in nursing college and has continued to work in the public sector until retirement, becoming a teacher and, later, a school inspector. Bee Bee has always embodied helping others as part of her professional and personal life. After retirement, 25 years ago, Bee Bee started volunteering weekly at the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). This continued until recently when CAB moved to telephone-only services.

Rather than resting on her laurels, Bee Bee undertook other volunteering roles, spending many hours each week on volunteering and charitable commitments, going out in all weathers despite being nearly 85 years old and having limited mobility herself.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 26 extraordinary people from across the UK are being recognised with the coveted British Citizen Award (BCA). One of them is Bee Bee Waldon from Didsbury. Due to the current government restrictions banning large gatherings indoors, the usual grand medal presentation ceremony at the Palace of Westminster is unable to take place. For the first time in its history, Bee Bee and the remaining 25 medallists will receive their BCA medals by courier, together with a video message from some of the patrons and an invitation to the House of Lords at a date yet to be determined.

Volunteering at the CAB, Bee Bee specifically supported those with debt problems and in crisis, helping them to get back on track and facilitating their return to a functioning role in society. This included the most vulnerable in the local community – refugees, disabled people and those with mental health conditions. For many years, Bee Bee was also chairman of the Didsbury Festival Committee, helping to organise annual events; bringing the community together for a fun family day.

Bee Bee also volunteers at the Friends of Fletcher Moss and Parsonage Gardens, happy to undertake clearing up and sweeping as well as providing baked goods and hot drinks at her own expense. She has undertaken this role for over 10 years, since the group’s inception, and she enjoys ensuring the upkeep of a historically valuable green space, which people in the community can enjoy. Bee Bee’s most recent volunteering role is with not-for-profit Assist, which provides support for the elderly and socially isolated in the community and is reliant on volunteers.

George Galway December 1940 – October 2020 Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet – A tribute by Peter Johnson When asked why he played jazz rather than classical music like his brother, Fog Lane resident George Galway would reply, “because I don’t like crowds!” This belied his superb musicianship in both genres but demonstrated his humility and wit much beloved by audiences and fellow players.

In fact, he did play classical music and frequently gave recitals, often from memory, but it was in jazz that he truly made his mark.

George had a great musical ear, which allowed him to play most tunes without recourse to the written music and he explained that growing up in a musical family in Belfast, his mum used to tell

him the first note and key, and from there he could work it all out himself.

George played throughout the UK and Ireland in clubs and festivals with top bands, including The Melotones and Ken Dodd Orchestra, and jazz greats, such as Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison and Humphrey Lyttleton. He said that his career highlight was a Benny Goodman tribute at the Barbican with Bob Wilber. When I returned to playing 25 years ago after a long layoff, I consulted one of the greats on the jazz scene Tommy Whittle for advice, who simply said, “Go speak to George Galway!"

George lived in Belfield Road in 1967-68 and returned in 1977 to settle in Didsbury, buying a house on Fog Lane. His two sons attended Beaver Road Junior and Parrs Wood High. His wife Muriel passed away in 2010.

George was a much-loved and respected teacher, in schools and privately, and hundreds of children enjoyed his tuition – many of whom grew up and sent their

Riz Ahmed and The Long Goodbye The music artist, storyteller, actor and activist will perform an exclusive online live edition of The Long Goodbye this December.

Developed especially for the digital realm and presented in binaural sound, the online performance is a companion piece to the live stage show commissioned

by Manchester International Festival (MIF) and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), originally due to premiere in Manchester in March 2020 before Covid-19 led to its postponement until 2021.

Following on from his acclaimed recent album, The Long Goodbye – a close-up look at the breakup of a toxic relationship with the country you call home – Riz Ahmed’s livestreamed performance will blend storytelling, music, archive footage and immersive sound to guide audiences through an emotional landscape.

Unravelling the album tracks, it tells the story of this moment through a personal journey and asks: ‘how did we get here?’

Cooking Christmas with Julie Neville It really is the most wonderful time of the year and no one loves Christmas more than I do. Christmas carols are playing in the Neville house daily from the beginning of November (much to my husbands dismay) and I was actually writing my Christmas recipes this year at the start of October!

So, with this year being slightly different due to the lockdown – no Christmas markets, more time spent at home, less inclined to go to busy shopping centres when they are open and people trying to work to a tighter budget – my recipes are all about edible gifts, Christmas treats to make at home with the children, alternatives to the usual time-consuming and expensive Christmas cakes, and generally lots of fun and delicious foods. The recipe below looks incredible on a festive plate in the centre of the table and the truffles are fantastic boxed up as a homemade gift.

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES Serves 20

Preparation time: 20 minutes plus chilling Ingredients: 300ml double cream 300g dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces 50g unsalted butter Method: Place the butter and cream in a saucepan and heat until the butter has melted and bubbles are starting to form around the edges of the mixture.

Remove from the heat and pour over the chocolate. Leave for a few minutes, then stir until you have a smooth, glossy mixture.

If you are coating your truffles, then do it at this stage. Dessicated coconut, cocoa powder, chopped nuts and chocolate sprinkles all work really well.

If you are adding flavours, then separate into bowls and add in your flavours at this stage. Liquors work well, as does peppermint or orange extract, orange zest or almond extract.

When using extracts, less is more, as they can be really potent. Once you have incorporated your flavours, chill for several hours until set – minimum of four hours.

If you want to dip your truffles in melted chocolate, then chill them again before you do this. Keep in the fridge for a maximum of three to four days.

Once set, line a baking tray with parchment and oil your hands. Using either a melon baller or ice-cream scoop, take scoops of the mixture and roll into balls between your hands, then place onto the baking sheet.

Launched in lockdown: Aroma Casero We speak to our very own Emily Fitzgibbons, who like many on furlough, started a little lockdown side business during the 2020 pandemic

How it started During lockdown, like many employees up and down the country, I was put on furlough and thought I’d utilise my time wisely. There’s only so much daytime TV and Netflix you can watch whilst staying inside! When I was younger, like most kids, I used to mess around making ‘potions’ using all mum’s best shampoo and bubble bath (sorry mum) and I remember begging for a soap-making kit once for Christmas, so I’ve always had an interest in this kind of thing.

I love anything home fragrance or decor related, so I decided to take a shot at making candles and wax melts, originally as a hobby, but then family wanted to buy and friends started showing an interest, and then friends of friends and so on. I set up a proper website, where everything could be all in one place.

The first ‘proper’ sale happened within 48 hours and I was over the moon.

About Aroma Casero Aroma Casero offers a range of home fragrance products, from candles and wax melts to car and reed diffusers and even bath and body items. The business is fully CLP compliant, vegan-friendly and offers luxury products at affordable prices. There’s something for everyone in terms of scents; fresh, fruity, sweet, floral, there’s even designer dupes.

I leave the photography and visual side of things to my partner. She has a really creative eye when it comes to images and angles, whereas I’m more of a wordsmith. Plus, she’s a great second opinion when it comes to choosing scents – I can be very indecisive!

The name is a play on ‘homemade scent’ in Spanish. We tried many different names, some sounded cheesy, some were commonly used, but we wanted something different and unique.

Granted, we have to explain what it means sometimes, but it’s a great conversation starter!

Everyone thinks it’s so easy...

There’s much more to it than just melting and pouring wax. We use only veganfriendly oils and soy wax, which, it turns out, can be very temperamental. There’s a lot of practice involved and so many things that can go wrong; from cracking and dipping to sinkholes and frosting, not to mention all the different temperatures needed to melt, add colour and oils, cool and pour. It can take a lot of patience – I’m not sure how I do it, to be honest! I guess it’s the satisfaction you feel when they work out well and someone buys them.

What’s next We’ll just go with the flow! Our made to order personalised gift hampers have been so popular we’ll be extending the range with limited edition seasonal and occasion hampers. A set amount of Bestsellers themed hampers will be made, filled with Lemon Drop, Rhubarb and Rose, goodies, and once they’re gone, they’re Birthday Cake and Inspired Aventus gone! We’re starting with New Year's (a take on Creed aftershave) have been Eve hampers, on sale in December, selling the most recently. Our new containing firework and 2021 shaped Christmas scent, Frosted Forest, sold out wax melts, party poppers, Prosecco in two days. It’s a light and fresh burst of and more! Last year, my biggest worries were how to fit 24 people around a table meant for 12, whether I had enough booze to keep Uncle Martin and Cousin Sue from coming to blows over politics, and if I could actually squeeze into my Christmas dress after sneakily scoffing (and then replacing) several Cadbury’s selection boxes in the run up to the 25th.

What I’d give to be facing such trivial problems this Christmas. Instead, like millions of families across the UK, I’ve been filled with sadness and dread at the thought of not being able to get together with all my loved ones as we usually do over the festive period; so much so, that I have been wondering if it might be better all-round if Lord Muck and I just slob out in bed, watch boxsets and ignore Christmas completely.

Home Cooking with Julie Neville We sit down with nutritionist and author Julie Neville to chat about her new foodie venture helping you to create cost-effective meals with simplicity Like many people stuck at home earlier this year, Julie, wife to former Manchester United and England footballer Phil Neville, decided to launch a new project, Home Cooking with Julie, which encompasses a website, Instagram and YouTube channel.

“There were no pre-plans for this before lockdown occurred,” says Julie, “along with most of the country, I started cooking a lot more. It went from quick breakfasts to three three-course meals a day. Phil and the children would share pictures of our meals with our family and friends on WhatsApp.” And it didn’t take long before this became a regular routine.

“We’d have people messaging every day, ‘what’s Julie cooking today?’, and soon after that, they were asking for step-bystep videos and recipes, to the extent I’d find myself typing up fully-fledged menus most days!”

And so, the idea was born.

“People always say to me, ‘that looks amazing, I can’t do that’, but they most definitely can!” smiles Julie. “I want to inspire people and show them that home cooking can be done easily after work or a long day. Some dishes are from pan to plate within 30 minutes.”

Julie’s channels boast a broad spectrum of delicious meals, none of which are particularly difficult or time-consuming,

some even utilising leftovers, so there’s very limited food waste. Talk about cost-effective!

Plus, there’s something for everyone.

Julie caters for a variety of diets; from vegan and veggie to pescatarian.

“I myself am vegetarian,” Julie says, “and I eat mostly vegan meals, but not everyone I live with eats like me! So, I cook a range of different dishes every day. I’m also allergic to gluten and garlic, so I know what it’s like to be in the minority when it comes to food – one of the main reasons we’re planning to add lots more vegan, dairy free and gluten free recipes online in the future.”

Julie’s website also offers themed menus, such as ‘A Night at the Movies’, and dishes honouring her Irish heritage, including soda bread and a hearty Irish stew.

“I’ve really tried to cover lots of bases and think outside the box. Many people get bored when it comes to food, which needn’t be the case.”

And the same goes for Christmas.

“Never say never, there’s too much to put into one book, but I could definitely split them up into separate themes. I’ve never really had any aspirations to be an author and I’m a total novice, but I love writing and am quite studious, so yes, maybe in future.”

And her favourite cooking tip? “Always prep beforehand, it saves a lot of time and stress. I’m by no means a professional chef, but I know how to provide goodquality home cooking and have picked up many tips along the way.”

Covid-safe The safety of Shakedown customers is an absolute priority.

Originally, Shakedown offered inhouse dining, takeaway and kerb-side delivery, but now, two lockdowns in and to ensure everyone, even those shielding, has the opportunity to enjoy the menu, delivery partners Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats are on board.

During the first lockdown, a time when so many big-name burger makers were shutting shop, Shakedown continued to safely serve the community.

The diner and kitchen are deepcleaned daily and customers are required to wear masks (you can even buy one on-site) and use the Shakedown track and trace app using their phone. There’s even a high-tech order screen outside the diner, which also allows you to see your food being prepped and cuts out the ‘is mine ready yet’ scenario. The team are in the process of installing an outside

canopy and heating to stop customers feeling the winter chill.

Committed to quality As well as serving quality food and drink that stands out from the famous-name crowd, the Shakedown team are fully committed to providing quality customer service.

If a customer experience isn’t perfect, they will replace or refund; their ethos being to turn a rare bad review into a good one.

Equally, the brand aims to create a fun, caring environment for employees; wanting them – whether they carve out a career within the business or not – to remember their time working there with fondness.

Helping the local community Recently, Shakedown created black beanie hats featuring its distinctive brand colours, which customers could buy with donations of £4 or above and every penny went to the RECLAIM

project. The latter works to support working-class young people in the region; giving them a voice, breaking down barriers to achievement and affecting social change.

Helping local people and charities is high on Shakedown’s future schedule, as is opening up more diners in the suburbs…

Future eats The final touches are being put to a brand-new Shakedown diner in Wythenshawe. As with its successful predecessor, all items on the menu will be made fresh on-site daily and there are some new desserts around the corner too (a delectable cornflake tart and key lime pie included).

The dream is to open at least five more diners in the next five years. All will deliver the same recipe for success, and that success will be shared with those who need it within the community.

I’d wanted to learn European techniques and that’s why I’d gone down the road I did, but the show turned me back towards my Indian roots, showed the potential to use those techniques in a different direction. It was a breakthrough moment for me.”

It’s not about food fusion but paying tribute to the wonderful, local ingredients available and creating Indian food that is absolutely my food. Any chef can play it safe and copy. That is not my way. In my career, I’ve found that if a door doesn’t open, I’ve had to build my own doors, publishing my own books, creating my fine dining indian magazine brand. Vermilion is an important next step on my journey.”

A socially distanced dining experience and piece of public art, Box on the Docks consists of 30 selfcontained deluxe sheds and greenhouses (‘boxes’), each decorated by specially commissioned Salford-based artists.

ASK THE EXPERTS Anna Laws Anna Laws is a Senior Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapist at Spire Manchester Hospital, with a specialist interest in sports injuries, clinical pilates and athlete screening. As a keen runner herself, Anna has a particular interest in preventing and rehabilitating running injuries.

What injuries are classed as running injuries? The most common running problems are overload injuries affecting the lower limb and include; anterior knee pain, ITB syndrome, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), stress fracture, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. Physiotherapy is essential in assessing and treating these conditions.

Why are running injuries so common? The complex and repetitive nature of running can make runners prone to overuse and overload injury. Whether you’re a competitive or recreational runner, you’re highly likely to suffer from an injury at some time. It’s estimated that a staggering 65-80% of runners suffer from injury every year! Running injuries are often caused by biomechanical imbalances and muscle dysfunction, but can also be caused by overload and training

errors. These injuries restrict performance, disrupt training plans and sometimes cause runners to stop running all together.

Can runners avoid injury? Yes – prevention is better than cure! We designed a screening assessment for athletes, which includes a full biomechanical analysis of fundamental movements specific to running. We then identify any imbalances and address these through advice and specific exercises, which reduce the risk of injury, improve performance and enable you to keep running. We also give advice on training programmes and cadence and running technique, and we always recommend runners try our sports pilates classes, which focus on core, hip and knee strengthening to help reduce the risk of injury.

How has Covid-19 impacted your patient consultations?

At the OrthTeam Centre, during the first lockdown, when we were unable to provide face-to-face care, we held secure video and telephone consultations. This was not new to me, as I have been doing this for many years with the long-haul professional athletes that I look after. It was great to see my colleagues embracing this technology and being able to continue to provide care and support to patients.

How has Covid-19 impacted operations?

I am really fortunate in that I have access to an ambulatory procedure room and can perform the vast majority of hand cases under local anaesthetic without a tourniquet.

Some bigger procedures were put on hold for a while; however, it has been amazing how understanding my patients have been.

What are the positives that will come out of this pandemic?

Although we are continuing to provide face-to-face care at the OrthTeam Centre, I think we will see the demand and use of video consultations continue, particularly for postoperative patient assessments. We will also see a greater use of technology, including electronic medical records and image transfer, both of which the OrthTeam Centre is progressing.

Charity hike goes virtual Returning for its 55th year, Cheadle Hulme School’s (CHS) annual charity hike celebrated its biggest walk yet when trekkers near and far took part in the school’s first social event of the academic year – virtually!

Started in 1966 by avid walker and former CHS teacher of geography Ian Ray, the school’s charity hike usually sees its senior pupils embark upon a 20km walk. This year, with social distancing restrictions in place, the school extended the invitation to all and asked walkers, cyclists and skaters to cover five or eight miles in one virtual expedition to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice, 42nd Street, Beechwood Cancer Care and Childflight, along with Hope 4 the World and CHS's work with communities in the Gambia. CHS families, staff, and Old Waconians (former pupils and staff) all took part, with some walkers even completing their miles whilst wearing fancy dress!

Young and enterprising MHSG students the Young Enterprise Teamwork Award and scored highly for sustainability and the high quality of their original designs.

Their Managing Director, Chloe Christie, was runner-up in the prestigious Student of the Year Award. Both teams developed and tested their ideas earlier this year, then rose to the challenge of presenting digitally during lockdown, submitting a business report, images of their trade stand and filming a four-minute presentation of their Young Enterprise journey.

Stockport Grammar School (SGS) marked this year’s Remembrance Day with virtual services shared across the Pre-Reception, Junior and Senior School. The Senior School service was led by Headmaster, Dr Paul Owen, with Upper Sixth Form pupils present for their final service in school.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the Act of Remembrance was recorded and shared virtually with pupils in their classrooms as well as with alumni. A musical performance of Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik (First Movement: Allegro) was played by the school’s string quartet and Fifth Year pupil Ella Moran sang Handel’s Lascia ch’io pianga.

In the Junior School, Head Boy, Finn R, and Head Girl, Charlotte U created a short video about Remembrance Day, which was shown to pupils before they went outside to observe the two-minute silence.

National ISA competition success for AeSG pupil Alderley Edge School for Girls’ pupil Dalia Halwani has been announced as a winner in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Film and Digital Art Competition. Winners were announced by the ISA earlier this month and Dalia achieved second place in the Key Stage 5 category of the competition.

Her entry was submitted during her final year at the school, before she headed off in September to study Illustration with animation at university.

The ISA Film and Digital Art Competition is held annually and is a fantastic opportunity for pupils at independent schools to use both creative and technical skills to produce art works in the digital genre.

St Ambrose Prep welcomes girls for the first time in more than 70 years

The Trustees of St Ambrose Preparatory School have announced the school will become co-educational from 2021, welcoming both boys and girls aged three to 11. Headmaster, Frank Driscoll, who has revealed the news to parents of the Catholic school in Hale Barns, said: “We’re delighted to offer families of both girls and boys an opportunity to be part of our wonderful, caring community. By extending our rich and diverse education, we will be able to provide a family-based school, which can serve daughters and sons together.”

The only independent Catholic prep school for boys in the country outside of London, Mr Driscoll added: “This is an exciting moment in the school’s 70-year history and one that has been carefully considered over several years. “We continue to be committed to providing our pupils with a secure, stimulating environment in which they can flourish and believe that becoming co-educational will enable boys and girls to work together, respect each other, form friendships and better prepare for the future.

As I write this, we are about to enter another period of lockdown lasting until at least 2nd December, so it goes without saying that you do need to check with the venue that their Christmas and New Year events are happening. Many are trying their best to navigate everchanging rules. On the bright side (it is Christmas after all), several local venues have announced festive events – all socially distanced, of course – and many also have innovative online or outdoor activities.

All of the newly opened theatres and venues have strict Covid-19 guidelines, but all have managed to devise them rather cleverly so that you can still have fun and relax whilst feeling safe. Many of our gig venues and concert halls are still dark sadly, but let’s hope it isn’t too long before they become part of the city’s vibrant social landscape once again.
