North West senior executives going in to bat again for Manchester's homeless Following last year’s inaugural CEO Sleepout event held at Lancashire County Cricket Club, senior executives from across the North West will once again come together to give up their bed for one night and help those who don’t have one.

Participants will be asked to lead by example, braving the cold and sleeping outdoors, side-by-side with their peers, to raise funds for charities and projects that help fight poverty and homelessness in Manchester.

Taking place on the 15th May, the event will aim to better the £67,000 raised in 2016 and help to highlight a growing problem in the city.

CEO Sleepout Manchester 2017 is being organised by the LCCC Foundation

in partnership with national charity CEO Sleepout UK and will be one of several events taking place up and down the country, each aiming to build on the 1,000 executives who have already taken part and, together, raised over £1,000,000 to fight homelessness and poverty in the UK. The event will start at 8pm and finishes the following morning at Emirates Old Trafford, the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Andy Preston from CEO Sleepout UK said: “CEO Sleepout UK is delighted to be working with the LCCC Foundation again following last year’s successful event. By engaging the executive community across the North West, we aim to raise funds to help fight poverty and homelessness in

Manchester.”

‘Love Hale this Christmas’

Hale Business Association (HBA) has launched a Christmas campaign for 2017 ‘Love Hale this Christmas’. Businesses, families or individuals can each sponsor one of fifteen baubles for £1,000.

Two years ago, the funding for HBA was withdrawn by Trafford Council, which has meant it has had to raise the funds locally. If it wasn’t for the generosity of many local businesses, Hale would have

no festive lights. Last year, fundraising proved increasingly difficult, hence a new strategy has been planned for 2017.

Commenting on the new approach, Penny English, representative of HBA, explained: “We all love Hale and really want it to shine, especially at Christmas.

Many local people don’t realise the Christmas lights must now be funded locally. We have taken this decision early,

as we really do need to plan ahead. We are aware that many businesses plan their marketing campaigns at the beginning of the year and, therefore, we very much hope that some will consider coming on board. Individuals or families are also welcome to sponsor a bauble. The 15 sponsors will each receive exposure throughout the year, as thanks for their generosity in ensuring that Hale shines this Christmas.” Barbara Hallwood, Managing Director of Hale-based Marketing Profile, added: ‘We are delighted to be working with HBA on this exciting initiative. We have already sold eight of the baubles to Blackstone Solicitors, local family Orlando, Jemima & Tatiana, Foresight, See-Saw Lingerie, Franks Jewellers, 205 Fabulous Fashion, Cheshire Insurance and Cote. Fundraising Afternoon Tea raises £620 for Mayor’s charities

Local business owners, residents, and Magali Gorre of Real Housewives of Cheshire fame enjoyed Afternoon Tea at Victors recently, hosted by the Mayor of the Borough of Trafford, Councillor Judith Lloyd and Mayoress Ms. Noelle Ryder. The event, organised by Marketing Profile raised over £600 for the Mayors charities – the Stroke Association and Trafford Domestic Abuse Services.

£65m state-of-the-art Spire Manchester Hospital opened

by Sir Howard Bernstein Spire Healthcare has opened its flagship hospital in Didsbury, with Manchester City Council Chief Executive Sir Howard Bernstein declaring the hospital officially open for business at a VIP ceremony.

Replacing the previous hospital in Whalley Range, Spire Healthcare invested £65m in the construction of the new facility.

Designed with extensive input from consultants, staff and patients, the Didsbury-based hospital boasts a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including a UK-first CT scanner that can complete a full-body scan in five and a half seconds. Further highlights include a hydrotherapy pool, six laminar flow operating theatres and a medical education centre.

The latter comes complete with cutting-edge 4k technology, which facilitates live broadcasts direct from operating theatres to the centre.

Speaking at the opening evening, Chris Chadwick, Spire Manchester Hospital Director, said: “The opening of our new flagship hospital is a very special moment for everybody involved, as it represents the culmination of two years of very hard work.

Carl Austin-Behan Lord Mayor of Manchester

Whether in serious mode or otherwise, Manchester’s indefatigable, engaging Lord Mayor, Carl Austin-Behan, is true to himself. His flamboyance as Pride 2016’s pink-cloaked Grand Marshall and 2001’s Mr Gay UK – all pink hot pants and sash – is countered by an unswerving work ethic and non-stop commitment to civic and charitable causes. Working from 5am till the mayoral duties kick in, Carl has clocked up well over 1,000 official events this year.

Fay Wertheimer: Have you always harboured political ambitions?

Carl Austin-Behan: None till moving into the city centre in 2005. I then decided joining the council was the only way to tackle parking and refuse problems – and made it at 38. I bid for Lord Mayor hoping to represent Manchester’s diversity, its youth, and raise awareness of the LGBT community — not Larry Grayson-style stereotypes but real people.

How about other minority groups?

I push for equality, diversity and integration.

My tweet from a mosque at the end of Ramadan was retweeted by a rabbi and quoted in the Guardian as a sign of

Manchester’s integration. Pride’s success is similar; it’s Manchester’s biggest annual weekend attraction, involving 130 floats and 3,000 participants.

I didn’t lie – and within hours was discharged. So, when the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service wanted me to keep mum – I refused.

What’s impressed you most during your time as Lord Mayor?

So much. Manchester’s history – we had the first hot air balloon. Amazing people.

Volunteers who work quietly across the political divide and saved our libraries.

World-famous scientists. Wills and Kate, who were so engrossed chatting with my husband Simon and myself, the Bishop of Manchester had to interrupt to introduce himself! The many children I’ve met in schools and the Town Hall, who were unfazed by the fact I’m married and shocked by my RAF discharge. I’ve only got one Drama GCSE. My message is: “Believe in yourself, you can be what you want to be – turn negatives into positives.”

Tell me about your family…

My church-going Mum Vera, who’s 81, initially thought my homosexuality was a phase – she’s now happy visiting the Village with me. I’m lucky – older mayors rarely have parents around to share their pleasures.

Did you believe in yourself?

Well, until 2000, homosexuals were banned from the forces. During seven wonderful RAF years, I was promoted, awarded honours and even flown to the London Marathon from Ascension. When questioned about my sexuality in 1997,

What are your thoughts on Manchester’s 128year-old mayoral traditions?

I don’t want attendants opening my car door for me, so that’s sorted. Unless formal dress is appropriate, I wear coloured shirts, jeans and the chain – which for a prison visit, I’d leave at home, as it’d create unwanted barriers.

What are your pet hates in life?

Oysters, my impatience, my inability to delegate – and Brexit.

What are your worries for the future?

Will people let on when I’ve no chain?

Jabberwocks receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at St James’s Palace

The Jabberwocks are a young persons’ group involved with Hale Civic Society. The young people are aged 13 to 24 and come together to work on community initiatives led by the Civic Society.

It was a most delightful day for young people to meet with HRH Prince Edward and receive their awards from TV presenter and DofE supporter Alice Beer.

Jabberwocks DofE Coordinator and Leader, Denise Laver, was also invited along by the young people and as a special DofE regional guest.

Jabberwocks are recognised as reliable volunteers, keen and enthusiastic, and are a credit to themselves. Many who have gone through the DofE journey continue with their links to the award and to Jabberwocks. Recently, many have taken part in the DofE Diamond Challenge as part of the award’s Diamond Jubilee, taking on various challenges and raising monies for both the award and various charities.

Personal challenges have involved climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking through Europe, running marathons and triathlons,

staging tea parties, entertaining the elderly and helping at residential centres for those with autism and special needs. Many have taken part in overseas projects for the residential part their DofE, and this has then inspired them to help those who may be disadvantaged.

Jabberwocks continue to help improve their local area, work towards their personal goals and enjoy the DofE. Their ethos is to help those to help others, and the door is always open for anyone to start their award.

Didsbury and Altrincham battle for Britain in Bloom Gold

Didsbury and Altrincham are among eight groups that have been selected to represent the North West region in the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom UK Finals 2017.

They will be competing against groups from across the nation to be crowned one of the cleanest, greenest and most beautiful places in the UK. For the second time in the group’s six-year history, Didsbury is a finalist in the ‘Urban Community’ category.

This year, 300 volunteers will be will be turning their streets, three parks, churches and schools into wildlife havens, using the theme of ‘wildlife and biodiversity’ to grow bee-friendly plants, create two new wildlife ponds, and install bird and bat boxes. They will also be honouring local environmentalist Emily Williamson, who founded the organisation that became the RSPB from her home in Didsbury in 1889. Plans to celebrate Emily’s legacy will include the creation of a huge willowwoven robin, with the red breast formed from flowers, and a bird trail for children.

Heather Stemp, Chair of Didsbury in Bloom, said: “It’s very exciting to be an RHS Britain in Bloom finalist again.

Our group is entirely volunteer-led, and taking part brings the whole community together. Everyone from shop and bar owners through to local school children work hard to make the area clean, tidy and beautiful.”

Altrincham is a first-time finalist in the ‘Large Town’ category, an impressive achievement as the 30-strong volunteer group only started participating in 2014.

The Altrincham Community Team (ACT) is overseeing a number of projects that both strengthen the community and reflect Altrincham’s rich industrial heritage.

‘Food for Thought’ is a collaboration with Navigation Primary School, where the pupils will be taught how food makes its way onto the plate by growing vegetables and herbs from seed. The harvested food is being donated to a charitable senior citizens’ lunch club.

The community gardeners will also be gradually transforming a run-down site at the town entrance into a ‘Green Gateway’, which will boast new features, such as a carved tree stump depicting images from Altrincham’s past, some storytelling heritage panels, and a carpet bedding feature to welcome visitors.

“We’re both delighted and daunted at being a finalist,” said Sarah Walmsley, ACT’s Project Coordinator. “The areas we are up against have lots of experience, but we’re really hoping to do well and have already started fundraising so that we can carry out all our plans.”

In August, both Didsbury and Altrincham will lead RHS Britain in Bloom judges on a tour of their areas as they bid to win a top award. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Llandudno, North Wales on 27th October.

Sue was one of the headmistresses of Didsbury CE Primary in the 1980s and is now the English Heritage local co-organiser for the whole of Didsbury and leads the Didsbury walks. Also attending will be Diana Leitch who, along with Sue Good, wrote the history of the aforementioned primary school. Diana talks to groups about famous people, including those from Didsbury. Entrepreneurs such as Wayne

Mellor and George Ashworth will be joining the reunion too. Many people will be travelling not just from various UK locations but also from outside the country. Around 200 to 300 people are expected to attend, but the numbers are increasing daily as word spreads and the event gathers momentum.

Weather prevailing, attendees will congregate outside The Didsbury and spread out towards Ye Olde Cock.

There is also a private room reserved at the latter venue for later on in the day or if the weather takes a downturn.

Cheshire women are being urged to get down and dirty in the fight against cancer by signing up for an exciting new event from Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Adrian and Neela Tratalos Together by Design

A

s an eighteen-year-old student, Neela Shan used to pull pints for Adrian Tratalos in the Griffin in Bowdon. Little did she know how significant a part they would eventually come to play in each other’s lives. Adrian reckons Neela was way out of his league in those days, but he somehow managed to improve his powers of persuasion over time.

A chance meeting decades later in a Hale restaurant marked the start of both a new relationship and an all-consuming business venture. With both recently separated from their spouses, the timing was definitely a case of serendipity.

Neela explains: “As we got to know each other better, it became clear how much we had in common. A simple example is how our mutual love of British wildlife, and nature generally, brought us closer together.

When we knew each other in our youth, the night clubs of Manchester were the usual setting. Now, the little free time we have is spent walking the Welsh mountains or the countryside of the Cotswolds. Seeing a hare running across an open field, or a kestrel hovering above its prey, gives us far more joy than anything the glamour of the city can offer.”

In 2010, Neela was a fabric agent, representing a Belgium mill and an Italian tannery, supplying fabric and leather to furniture manufacturers such as Parker Knoll and G Plan. Adrian was in the process of selling his finance business, and both were ready for a new adventure – in more ways than one.

Adrian proposed over a champagne lunch, high above Tower Bridge in London, on the 32nd floor of the newly opened Shard, and they were married on Midsummer’s day 2014. Adrian surprised Neela by secretly paying homage to her random penchant for men in kilts: “As I descended the stairs of the stately home where we were marrying,” remembers Neela, “I was astounded, in a wonderful way, to see Adrian and his best man, son Laurence, standing there in full Scottish national dress. I was overcome with emotion before the ceremony had even started!”

The pair were introduced to artist Barry Ward, just as the new world of digital printing on furnishing fabrics was gathering

pace. Barry’s outstanding artistic talent, Neela’s industry contacts and Adrian’s business experience created an obvious synergy, the result of which was Arley House – a design-led digital printing fabric business, based in the Cheshire village of Ashley.

Neela has a clear vision of where the business is heading: “Our aim is to create a brand synonymous with beautiful design and product quality. Barry suggested our strap line ‘home of art in design’, as all our designs emanate from original handpainted work. In years to come, we want the interior design community to be waiting for the next collection from Arley House.”

As with all new business ventures, there have been challenges and potential pitfalls along the way. Arley House not only designs its own fabric collections but also manufacturers its products in workshops behind its Ashley showroom.

Manufacturing has proved a steep learning curve for the directors, but also a very rewarding one. “Seeing Barry’s hand-painted creations brought to life on fabric on a daily basis is a captivating experience,” says Managing Director Adrian.

Building a new business whilst managing a family can require a juggling act, and that is especially the case for Neela with her two girls, Tia and Anya, still at school. Adrian has three grown-up children of his own, Louisa, Anna (who lives in

Barcelona) and screenwriter son, Laurence.

A long-standing friend of Adrian’s, John Nono, who created the brand Nono Living with his wife Gill, offered to help by joining the team at Arley House. John was appointed marketing director and his industry experience is proving to be a real asset: “There is no substitute for someone who has done it before,” says Adrian, “accepting John’s offer of assistance was a no-brainer.”

In addition to having a showroom open to the public at its Ashley premises, and supplying interior designers with its fabric collections, the business has a growing contract division – servicing designers and architects who work with hotels, restaurants and bars. “We are always excited to see our fabrics covering seating in local establishments,” enthuses Neela. “For example, we recently enjoyed a family meal in the newly-opened restaurant Sigiriya in Hale and were surprised and thrilled to realise we were sitting on Arley House fabric!”

In 2016, Adrian approached the worldrenowned Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) with a view to exploring the possibility of a creative collaboration. For the V&A, it is all about quality and, after several meetings and various visits to Arley’s premises, an exclusive licence agreement was signed. Working with archive designs, Arley House has created three V&A collections, which it launched at the international interiors trade show Decorex last September.

Adrian was subsequently approached by the British Museum, partly because of the company’s work with the V&A, and the resultant collaboration led to the creation of a luxury British Museum-branded cushion collection. Neela and Adrian are particularly proud that two such iconic British institutions chose to put their faith in the relatively unknown Arley House.

However, for the couple that had no inkling of what the future might bring when they first encountered each other all those years ago, home is definitely where the heart is: “Working closely with the V&A and the British Museum has been a very exciting experience,” says Neela, “but it is our own Arley House designs that make us who we are.”

Within seven years of opening, Jo Davies' stand-alone Black White Denim (BWD) boutique in Wilmslow has become the northern fashion destination for contemporary designer ladies' wear. That's no mean feat. After all, the industry favours London and the South, and business graduate Jo, despite 16 years in national sales and marketing, had no retail experience – apart from shopping for herself! And that's the key. She simply mirrored her personal preference for style and substance in her new business, maintaining her own uncompromising stance on excellence.

She launched BWD in September 2010. The recession was raging and internet sales were already affecting small independents.

So why start up then? Well, a single first-time mum at 39, sales director Jo had settled up North with new partner, adman David.

Unsurprisingly, the daily 180-mile round-trip from Bowdon to her Burton-on-Trent office made balancing motherhood with work impossible, so she quit the day job. Now 49, Jo says: “By definition, fashion changes, but style remains constant. I believe less is more and that there's no substitute for quality. BWD was a new concept. Black, white and denim are the core colours of any wardrobe. Get those right, and you're on track,

and you can accessorise them too. Over time, we've learnt to broaden out colour-wise. We stock over 20 UK and international designer brands and, though most items are monochrome, we take care to include coloured pieces which brighten up the store!”

The Morteratsch Glacier stretches around 7km (4 miles), making it the longest in the Engadine and the tenth longest in switzerland. about 160 years ago, during the Little ice age, it almost stretched to where Morteratsch station stands today.

The mighty lateral moraines piled high with rock debris, which reveal the extent of the glacier in 1850, still dominate the flanks of the valley. You can hire a guide and equipment from one of the many local places in Pontresina.

Whether you’re an enthusiast, an occasional biker or just enjoy exploring on two wheels, you’ll find countless routes to suit you among more than 400km (250 miles) of inspiring and enjoyable mountain bike trails. accessing the terrain is easy. Many of the public transport services in the Upper Engadine allow you to travel with a bike; cable cars and funiculars will whisk you up

to the superb biking terrain around Corviglia/Marguns. a particular highlight is a trip to Piz nair (3,056m/10,026ft), where you are treated to breathtaking views and a choice of thrilling high-altitude trails back down to the valley.

Windsurfing and standup paddleboarding are more gentile summer activities, but nevertheless blissful and can either be guided or unaccompanied. Lake st. Moritz has a few water sports activity centres, and visiting one of them is easily arranged.

Whilst there are no beaches, lake swimming is possible. as well as the four big lakes along the main valley, the Engadine is home to many smaller lakes and pools; hidden in the mountain forests and perfect for a refreshing dip on hot summer days. among the most attractive are the Lägh da Cavloc near Maloja, the Lej nair (whose surface mirrors the massif of the Piz Corvatsch), the Lej Marsch (just below the Lej nair), the popular Lej da staz, and the golf lakes outside samedan.

London Marriott Hotel County Hall on London’s South Bank

he London Marriott hotel County hall is centrally located on the capital’s south Bank. This luxury five-star establishment is traditionally elegant, with views overlooking the London Eye, Big Ben, the houses of Parliament and the River Thames.

The hotel, the former home of the Greater London Council, currently has 206 spacious guest bedrooms and suites, all of which are air-conditioned, and most of the suites boast river views. all of the rooms and suites have been comprehensively refurbished and are brimming with five-star luxury.

Thoughtful amenities in every hotel room include pillow-top bedding and sleek stone bathrooms. The hotel has mosaic tiles and bespoke wallpaper featuring a historic map of London. our onebedroom executive suite was tastefully decorated and comprised of lounge, dining room and walk-in closet. They say that size isn’t everything, but here it certainly added to the experience.

The Executive Lounge offers a selection of complimentary cuisine and drinks throughout the day not just in the evening: Continental breakfast served between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. snacks and soft drinks are available all day. Evening drinks and canapés are served between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Gillray's steakhouse & Bar, situated on the ground floor, is warm and cosy; wood paneling and glass chandeliers creating a regal yet relaxed ambience. The service was attentive, but not overbearing.

My wife and i opted to share the prawn and avocado salad (£15), which i followed with a manly T-bone steak weighing in at a colossal 500g (Gillray’s is the most English of English dining destinations, paying homage to top-quality beef), whilst Beverley chose the ribeye (250g), accompanied by triple-cooked chips, grilled mushrooms, rocket leaf salad and the obligatory peppercorn sauce.

Chef treated us to homemade Yorkshire pudding with a cheese middle.

We were reliably informed by our waitress that the american and European guests

love Yorkshire pudding! all washed down with a bottle of Leftfield new Zealand sauvignon Blanc, £45. service was swift, food very good and, looking out on the London Eye, there was no better location to enjoy a delicious meal. The bar is open late and serves a mixture of classic and contemporary cocktails; a selection of over 100 gins and a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits and English bar snacks. There is a fully equipped fitness club and a 25m swimming pool with complimentary access for all hotel guests offering ten dedicated meeting rooms, so the hotel can create bespoke events and first-class catering. overall, the Marriott hotel County hall is a fabulous hotel with attentive staff in a great location, and boasts the largest indoor hotel swimming pool in London.

They say first impressions count, and this place certainly leaves a lasting impression. Even the cloudy, drizzle couldn't dampen our stay.

So, last week, I decided it was high time his Lordship and I spent a relaxing Friday evening together rather than watching yet another depression-inducing weekly news programme.

ou see, two weeks ago, i was in for a root canal and, whilst in the dentist’s waiting room, an old gardening magazine’s headline caught my eye: ‘Companion planting essential for a healthy garden’. Before i had a chance to read the article, i was called in; trembling in his chair, i valiantly tried to take my mind off the screeching drill by thinking about that headline. Companion planting wasn’t a technique i was familiar with, but as i lay back, trying not to choke on my fearinduced saliva, i wondered if planting with Lord Muck at my side might be more fun than planting solo.

That coming weekend, my mind was set: we would kick it off by spending a wonderful couple of hours planting out my little seedlings in the kitchen garden, side by side, gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes before retiring for drinkies. as i heard him pull up outside after work, i checked

everything was ready – jug of sangria, tick.

Candles lit, tick. La Perla set on under gardening gear, tick.

Unfortunately, things did not go to plan.

Lord Muck roared his head off when he heard my version of companion planting. apparently, i’d got the wrong end of the stick completely and, in between howls of laughter, he explained that companion planting is, in fact, an old gardening tradition, whereby plants are combined very carefully with specific companion plants for their mutual benefit. By doing this, plants help each other by providing nutrients in the soil, offering protection from wind, attracting beneficial insects, or acting as a decoy for harmful ones. Damn, i hate it when he knows more than me. so, if you’ve got a partner who grew up in a veggie-growing household, here are some great plant combos to impress them with.

Plant french marigolds amongst tomatoes to emit a strong odour that repels greenfly and blackfly. strongly-scented sage grown with carrots will help drive away the dreaded carrot fly. nasturtiums planted around cabbages are a babe magnet for caterpillars and, whilst they’re busy munching on them, the cabbages are less nibbled. Plant chervil around your salad leaves and lettuces to deter aphids, and garlic grown at the base of rose bushes will do the same. and my favourite plant combo? Cucumbers grown under giant sunflowers. The sunflowers provide afternoon shade for the cucumbers and they, in return, act as a living mulch beneath the blooms and also deter weeds. Result.

Right, must dash. Time to swot up on this year’s six nations rugby stats. Well, i need to get my own back on his Lordship somehow…

as a brand, Evuna has been up and running since 2002, with the northern Quarter restaurant opening up three years ago. stepping into the restaurant, you feel like you’re in a cosy tapas restaurant in rural spain. its interior is everything you’d expect from an authentic spanish eatery.

The wine tasting evening is a bit of a free for all, everyone sits together on long tables and it’s a great way to get people talking about the food and, in particular, the wine.

Bramhall village centre is a hidden gem. as more and more bars and restaurants open, the established places need to step up and keep up with the crowd. Local favourite Mercato has done just that by opening Mercato Grill above their already established restaurant downstairs.

our food was matched with a bold sardinian red wine and it was the perfect accompaniment to a great dinner. i would highly recommend Mercato Grill, a true hidden gem in a lovely little village.

This is possibly the grandest invite for dinner we have ever received: ‘The Earl and Countess of Derby invite you into their home to experience the gastronomic delights of their Executive Chef Paul Macnish’… sold! as we made our way through to the formal dining room, Executive Chef Paul Macnish was on hand to welcome us and our sommelier from Boutinot wine merchants was there to talk us through the wines.

The menu was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Paul pulled out all the stops to ensure we were wowed. our five-course menu was a culinary delight, with a take on ham, egg and chips we will never forget, but the showstopper had to be dessert.

The fairground consisted of white chocolate and rose donuts, salted caramel, candy floss and violet sherbet. a collective ‘WoW’ was heard from around the room.

Knowsley hall will be hosting these ’Exquisite Evenings’ throughout the year and it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a beautiful stately home and imagine, just for one day, that you are Lord of The Manor.

The price is just £95 per person for a five-course menu and matched wines.

With an incredible amount of food, including dishes i had never tasted before, we were spoiled rotten. a particular favourite of mine was the anchovies, something i didn’t expect to enjoy but loved every bite. as each of the six courses were served, a new wine was presented by a member of the Evuna team. We were delighted to taste a beautiful Cava, four different wines, and finished up with an incredibly tempting sherry. so tempting in fact, we bought a bottle to take home with us. Evuna’s wine tastings are just £30 per person for six courses and six matched wines.

inside the elegantly decorated restaurant, we started with Burratina, a creamy cow’s milk mozzarella, bresaola salami and shaved black truffle. The quality of the mozzarella was outstanding; fresh, creamy and perfectly paired with the bresaola.

Thinking it would be rude not to have a steak in a grill, the manager asked me how i liked my steak. stating i liked it rare, he advised i choose a fillet with a gorgonzola sauce. it was cooked to perfection and the taste was incredible, it tasted as if it had been barbecued for hours but was still as rare as i enjoy.

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is to Sri Lanka what Uluru (Ayers Rock) is to Australia – a massive rock outcrop rising high above the surrounding landscape

igiriya the restaurant is a first for hale – indeed the first sri Lankan restaurant in the north of England. and judging by the sell-out Thursday evening when we visited recently, Don Buddhika's unique venture has hit the ground running, and deservedly so.

The former manager of the Jumeirah Beach hotel restaurant in Dubai and perhaps best known locally for making Mughli in Knutsford a destination for lovers of top-notch indian food, Don is on a mission to introduce diners to the delights of his native sri Lanka’s cuisine. We are now converted. it was also good to reacquaint ourselves with Restaurant Manager nityananda Pathak, known to many from his long spell at the late and much lamented Dilli in altrincham, who has latterly been at the helm of Vermilion in Manchester.

The style of cooking at sigiriya is a sumptuous and colourful blend of indian cuisine but using little or no oil, and Thai, featuring the flavours of lemongrass, coconut and lime, thus producing lighter dishes of vibrant freshness. The roster of lighter dishes and exotic salads on the daytime menu – averaging just £9 – is bound to be attractive to locals who lunch. if first impressions count, they count in sigiriya from the moment one crosses the threshold into the colourfully tiled entrance. The decor, fashioned by Katie McCarthy of style Matters in Knutsford, blends contemporary chic with traditional sri Lankan cultural features; bright coloured masks with earthy spice tones.

We began as we might have in an indian restaurant with shards of delicate crispy poppadums, but the ‘chutney tray’ included a winning salsa combining chickpeas, coriander, lemon red onion and cucumber. The Lamb Chop Tikka was exemplary, tender and non-greasy, as was the Chicken Tikka. speciality small plates brought excellent spicy sri Lankan fish Cake; tuna seasoned with ginger, black pepper and lemongrass, and served with a chilli and lemongrass sauce. The fresh and zingy Gama salad comprised beetroot, carrot and red onion, enlivened by a stab of green chilli and drizzle of white wine vinegar.

Main courses (‘from Ceylon – art of sri Lankan food’) brought Elumas Curry featuring lamb slow cooked on the bone in a hot coconut curry and seasoned with roast sri Lankan curry powder, and Mustard fish Curry, a boneless meaty fillet of kingfish luxuriating in a vibrantly spiced ochre sauce. Both were new to us but utterly delicious and served with just-so fluffy garlic rice.

We rounded off with sri Lankan dessert classic Watalappan, a caramelised egg and coconut custard flan with jaggery (asian sugar cane and dates) and cashews, another new and delightful culinary experience. and that's the thing about the food in sigiriya, the dishes may seem familiar but aren't quite, offering different and exciting taste sensations.

The Carrington Grill restaurant at Mottram hall has recently won an aa Rosette award, and i can see why.

it’s a known fact that spanish restaurants aren’t as popular as the more commonly found italian, indian or american establishments. however, they are increasingly rising in status, and nueve proved exactly why.

The alchemist is the newest addition to alderley Edge. it’s quirky interior and rustic feel draws you in, but the cocktail menu is extensive enough to keep you there for hours. We decided, as it was lunchtime, to go for some ‘Tapatisers’. There was so much to choose from and we probably overordered but it was too tempting not to.

The newly-launched five-course deluxe tasting menu has been designed to showcase the recent aa Rosette, and it doesn’t disappoint. Priced at £45 per person, not only is it purse pleasing, but pleasurable for the palette too. staff at the Carrington Grill were kind, welcoming and attentive throughout the night, and the contemporary yet sophisticated décor made for a relaxing but luxurious dining experience.

seared scallops and seasonal smooth Chicken Liver Parfait were first, one equally as tasty as the other. The creamy Pumpkin and Kale Ravioli was outstanding, and a sumptuous Roast Lamb Rump, served with potato terrine and minted peas, was truly delicious. Warm Chocolate fondants, oozing in the middle and served with vanilla ice cream, were a sweet ending to three courses. from the amuse-bouche to coffee and cheese board, the meal started and ended perfectly – the glass of chilled Veuve Clicquot wasn’t bad either!

Located on Barlow Moor Road, in the heart of Didsbury Village, this small spanish restaurant was hugely welcoming. Lit with candles and twinkling string lights, the atmosphere was warm and relaxing. The staff were friendly, and this, alongside great food and good music, made for a lovely evening. With excellent portion sizes using tasty, filling ingredients, three dishes each were enough to more than satisfy any pangs of hunger. The garlic bread and oil was a brilliant start, which was soon followed by delicious Chicken and Chorizo Paella; appetising red wine-infused chorizo and tender, succulent chicken in a white wine sauce. The trio of potato dishes – tomatobased Patatas Bravas, creamy garlic Patatas nueve and cheesy Croquetas de Patatas Y Queso – were the perfect accompaniment.

This charming restaurant was a hit for both tapas and wine – a definite must-try.

We feasted on Prawn Lollipops, Pork Bon Bons, Cheese Quesadillas and – our new all-time favourite snack – Crispy Kale.

Despite ordering only four dishes, there was a lot of food. The Pork Bon Bons were delicious; served up with a spicy horseradish sauce and incredibly moreish. The lightlybattered Prawn Lollipops came with a side of sweet chilli sauce, the perfect accompaniment. having left a little room for dessert, we decided to take advice and go for the Lemon Meringue & Passionfruit Mess, a take on an Eton Mess. one word – outstanding! Made with crème fraîche, for a lighter texture, this dessert was fresh, filling and the perfect way to finish our meal. for a celebrity spot and some wonderful food, The alchemist should definitely be on your list of new places to visit.

ynamic, educated and warm, The stanneylands’ Brazilian General Manager Carina Martins is raring to guide Wilmslow’s renowned and refurbished venue into a new phase. armed with a University of são Paolo Masters in Tourism, Carina knows her stuff both academically and hands-on. at 35, this happily married mother of two already has three general managerial posts under her belt, including a 2016 interim Berkshire position, after settling her family in Warrington. “i really understand the passion and demands of opening and re-opening hotels,” says multilingual Carina, “especially if they’re family-owned like Brazil’s prestigious fasano group, where i worked for nine years, and Mark Boler’s Mere collection here. Bringing a person’s vision to life is what moves and inspires me.

The stanneylands is intimate. it’s about providing the ‘best of British’. i don’t need to be born here to get the message. i believe in it.”

Looking back, cool Carina’s worked in city, countryside and beach hotels of every size,

commuted between são Paolo and Rio until baby number two was well on the way, and commandeered up to 180 staff in Brazil, where female hospitality bosses are not rare. so why relocate here? Well, Carina’s italianBrazilian roots underpinned her love of travel, people and languages. at five, she’d so envied a UK-based cousin’s ability to understand pop lyrics, she insisted on English lessons. But it was her year’s undergraduate work experience in Bristol in 2002 which affirmed her true anglophile status, mad keen to return to the north, not London. she had to wait. Back at uni, she fell for Ricardo nakama, a co-student of KoreanJapanese descent. They married, had children, and she developed her career. You see, to Carina, hospitality’s not a job, it’s a vocation that her superiors acknowledged by promoting her to general manager at 28.

Yet England beckoned. increasingly aware of são Paolo’s potential dangers, in 2014, the couple started planning last year’s big move. over here, public sector lawyer Ricardo is the willing house-husband-comeadministrator, and workaholic Carina feels

so at home she even claims to enjoy our weather.

Manned by 75 team members, The stanneylands has 52 rooms, an 80-capacity open-plan Tap and Pantry eating area, a formal restaurant, open evenings and sunday lunchtimes, plus the 100-capacity function room upstairs.

Passionate about her profession, Carina concludes: “We want The stanneylands to be somewhere people cherish, find affordable, and which attracts younger families and our regulars. hospitality’s about delivering to guests to make them feel welcome and valued. During our refurb, our team, old and new, had training over at The Mere, our sister establishment. i emphasised that it’s vital for team members to also feel free to be themselves. if they take pride in their job, interact well with guests and they care, then we can offer even better service.”

Carina’s life is jam-packed with long working hours and parenting kids who just can’t wait to see The stanneylands up and running – under Mum’s highly informed say-so, of course.

In conversation… with Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden Boyzlife Boyzlife the duo, created by Keith Duffy from Boyzone and Brian Mcfadden from Westlife, flew up to Manchester with some very lucky British airways competition winners last month for an exclusive up close and personal concert at the Ba offices in Didsbury. it is part of a fundraiser for flying start, British airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief. salim Uddin-Khandakar caught up with the boys.

You’re coming to Manchester and doing a couple of nights in april at the hilton in Deansgate, so it’s going to be very intimate.

Why the smaller venues and what can fans expect?

Keith: it’s an autobiographical show highlighting both Brian’s career with Westlife and mine with Boyzone. The experiences, our careers ¬– we call it story, laughter and music. We’re singing the favourite Westlife and Boyzone songs. it’s going to be up close and personal. We show old footage on video, the audience will have a great night.

Brian, what’s your favourite Boyzone track?

Brian: You needed Me is my favourite to perform, but and i, which wasn’t a single, is probably my favourite track. You have to remember, i was only a young teenager when Boyzone were on the scene. i was a big fan. as irish people, we never really had a pop band, we had U2 as a rock band. for the people of ireland, watching Boyzone explode onto the scene was something.

Keith, favourite Westlife track?

Keith: You can’t look past flying Without Wings. it was such a great pop record, a real feel-good song. You don’t have to be a Westlife fan to love that song.

Brian: i think it’s Westlife’s definitive song. in 20 years’ time, when you look back, you’ll associate Westlife with flying Without Wings. if you think of Wet Wet Wet, you think of Love is all around. for Boyzone, it’s probably Picture of You or no Matter What.

When touring together, do you have to put up with each other’s bad babits?

Keith: of course we do. We’ve known each other for a long time, with there only being two of us, we have to be honest with other. We don’t want any elephants in the room.

Brian: if there are five of you in a band, you have fallouts, but with two, you’ve got to get on with it.

Keith: if we fall out with each other, we’re kinda stuck.

United or City? Keith: United!

Brian: Jesus! What a question.

We’ve just come back from stamford Bridge, watching United.

What’s great about Manchester?

Brian: old Trafford.

Keith: oh (laughs) and Weatherfield.

The worst thing? apart from the rain…

Brian: (Laughs) The road to Liverpool.

Is life really a rollercoaster?

Keith: absolutely… if it’s not, you’re not living it properly.

Brian: (smiles) Exactly what he said!

Between you both, only Elvis has more No. 1 singles. What does that mean to you?

Keith: We’ve got 21, so we’re equal!

Star of the moment Jess Glynne talks all things Aintree The Jockey Club Live (JCL) and Aintree Racecourse are delighted to welcome back to the North West one of the UK’s hottest chart stars, Jess Glynne, on the 16th June.

But what’s bringing her back? “i had a lot of fun last year,” says Jess.

The band and i love playing live, and the crowds don't differ too much in size, so it's great! i haven't got into planning my live shows for this year yet! it will be exciting no matter what though.”

Mr Sifter sold me songs...

There are dedicated fans of Manchester rock superstars Oasis who ask Peter Howard to sign copies of the band's multi-platinum debut album Definitely Maybe.

YOU MAY WELL ASK, “PETER WHO?” Peter howard. Everybody in Burnage knows Peter howard... including noel and Liam Gallagher, the local lads who went on to conquer the pop music world in the 1990s with a string of best-selling singles and albums. for the last 40 years, Peter has run sifters, the second-hand record shop in fog Lane, where the Gallaghers were regular customers, buying old records long before oasis achieved stardom.

SHAKERMAKER But there's more to the connection than that. songwriter noel, who draws his lyrical inspiration from the familiar world around him, was composing the 1994 single shakermaker – the name of a popular toy in the 1970s – and Liam was pestering him to finish the track. at this point, so the legend goes, noel happened to be in a taxi heading for the recording studios, when it stopped at the traffic lights outside sifters. in a flash, noel had the song's final verse… Mr sifter

sold me songs/When i was just 16/now he stops at traffic lights/But only when they're green.

Peter, Mr sifter himself, says: "it's true, people still come in here with brand new copies of Definitely Maybe, give me an indelible black marker pen and ask me to deface them by writing 'Best wishes, Mr sifter' on the covers. i did it for one fan who put the CD in his pocket while the ink was still wet, and all he had was a big black smudge on it!"

VINYL STILL RULES When Peter first opened sifters on Mauldeth Road in 1977 (moving to fog Lane shortly afterwards), the vinyl LP was king. several new technologies later – audio tape, compact disc and MP3 download – it still is. as he puts it: "The times may be a-changin’, but they've not changed a lot in here." Though he does sell CDs and DVDs, vinyl still gets pride of place in the shop;

people still sift through the racks in search of gold pop nuggets that arrive "out of the blue" when people bring their collections in to sell. "i think people who collect vinyl aren't just interested in the music but also in the design of the covers, even the sleeve notes. on vinyl, Bob Dylan just flies out," says Peter, who "escaped" from a city council office job and, with a personal collection of around 600 LPs, started his business.

"That sounds a lot, but in a shop, it looks absolutely nothing,” remembers Peter. ”i was lucky that i shared premises with a plumber who wanted someone to answer the phone while he was out, so it was virtually free. Business is only as good as your stock and, this year, i have really struck lucky and got a huge collection of indie and punk LPs that are in great demand."

GARY ROSS Premier league surgeon tops the tables

I

f he’d had his way as a teenager, Gary Ross MBChB, MD, FRCS, (Plast) would be playing Premier League football or competing at Wimbledon for a living. Instead, at 44, he has earned the position of a ‘premier league’ plastic surgeon, regularly appearing in Tatler Magazine and topping league tables of Realself Top 100 reviews.

An accredited consultant plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon, Gary has practised from BMI The Alexandra Hospital for almost a decade. He provides cutting-edge surgery, including a fattransfer breast procedure, and has made the ‘Mummy Makeover’ – which aims to restore pre-pregnancy figures – a speciality.

Such is Gary’s expertise, he is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester, a global educator for Johnson & Johnson, and much sought after by the media. Just a few weeks ago, he was filming with Arlene Phillips for ‘Holding Back The Years’ on BBC Television, and Tatler Magazine voted him ‘best’ for breast and tummy surgery.

“I provide a bespoke service to each patient,” Gary says. “I want them to have the right reasons, mindset, and expectations. It’d be easy to operate on everyone, but I won’t take advantage of people who think surgery will make them happy or make them love themselves.

All this is a long way from Gary’s childhood in Northern Ireland. Gary’s dad played semi-professional football in his youth and Gary inherited a love of sports.

He played tennis for Northern Ireland and wanted to be a professional sportsman.

However, it wasn’t to be. At 14, he was badly burned in an accident, spending three months in hospital and many more having rehabilitation. Whilst he returned to playing sport, it wouldn’t be a career option.

“During my A Levels, I spent time with my GP, who was the doctor for the Northern Ireland football team, and chose medicine at Bristol University. Not only did I meet my wife there, but I had a great time playing sports, squeezing in some studying between matches.”

After graduating, he spent 12 months

working in Australia, before returning to continue his training. Stints in Bristol, Plymouth and Glasgow followed as he became interested in plastic surgery.

“The only experience I’d had with plastics had been my accident, but as I saw more, I realised it was fascinating,” Gary says. “When I started operating, I couldn’t get enough of the work. I worked crazy hours. The more I did, the more I wanted to do!”

After completing training in the UK and Toronto, in 2002, Gary moved to the North West and worked as an NHS consultant plastic surgeon at The Christie hospital, carrying out reconstructive work.

In 2007, he established his private practice as a consultant plastic surgeon at BMI The Alexandra Hospital.

Corinna, a consultant dermatologist, and Gary married in 2001 and live in Cheshire with their three children; two sons, aged 11 and 10, and a daughter, aged five.

“I’m a lucky guy,” smiles Gary. “Dream job, lovely family, and sport every weekend.

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are rare but serious mental health conditions.

There are three main types; anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder. AN is hallmarked by being severely underweight, BN occurs in people who are normal weight and is associated with episodes of bingeing and vomiting, whilst binge eating disorder is bingeing without any attempt to remove food afterwards. These disorders are associated with poor body image.

BOXERCISE How to protect your hands Boxing is a fantastic exercise requiring mental and physical strength, agility and balance.

Participation in the sport for both fitness and in a competitive arena is rising, particularly in the female population, with Sport England reporting a 50% increase in the last year, which is in part attributed to the success of the GB Olympic boxing team.

It is an extremely popular form of cardiovascular exercise practiced in many gyms across the region and favoured by personal trainers, however, it can sometimes come at a price, with injuries to the hand and wrist becoming more commonplace.

From a professional perspective, it has been reported that boxers suffer around 350 injuries for every 1,000 hours they compete and most of these injuries occur during training, as this is where the majority of time is spent.

Before embarking upon this lung-bursting workout, there are number of simple ways to help prevent injury: • Always warm your hands up before you start – a general cardiovascular warm-up will get the blood flowing, and prepare the hands and knuckles for the session ahead • Take wrapping seriously – standard boxing hand wraps are the most effective.

Learn how to apply your own wrap; pay particular care to the knuckles, which should have extra padding. There are

some over-the-counter hand gel mitts that go inside your main glove and are thought to give extra protection to the knuckles, however, these can cause friction burns and bruising. They do provide extra padding and if you are going to use them, it’s better to apply a light under-wrap before you slip in the gel mitt • Consider a custom-made wrist splint – this is usually needed if you get wrist sprains after ‘rolling’ your wrist in forced flexion. They are comfortable and lie along the back of the wrist, from the forearm to just short of the knuckles.

Bespoke splints are now widely available from hand and wrist specialists • Use a qualified trainer – hitting pads is not easy and can be dangerous if the person holding the pads doesn’t know what they are doing or has poor timing.

Ask your coach who trained them and how long have they been doing it. If you lack confidence in their ability, err on the side of caution and throw gentle punches at a low to medium speed • Take it easy and seek help if you get injured – whilst boxing is a fantastic exercise with huge benefits, there is really no need to go overboard and throw that power shot which could result in injuring your hand against a hard, stiff bag. If you do experience pain, withdraw and allow the hand to settle. If it continues, seek advice from a specialist Mr Mike Hayton is an Orthopaedic Consultant specialising in hand and wrist problems. Caroline Flatley, 44, an Executive Assistant for British Cycling, successfully achieved her goal of reaching Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, at an altitude (height above sea level) of 5,364 metres (17,598 feet), due to her hard work, determination and preparation at the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance.

Caroline says: “As British Cycling has an existing relationship with the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance, I was aware of the world-class facilities and expert team there.

“I got in touch with their Performance Lead, Rachael Dawe, about potentially training in their Environmental Chamber as I’d never been at high altitude before or in a very cold climate, and I wanted to ensure that I was as prepared for the trip to Mount Everest Base Camp as possible.”

Rachael and her team worked with Caroline to devise a bespoke programme, which encompassed a total of 12 hours, over a period of four weeks, in the Environmental Chamber to help acclimatise her body for the tough climb ahead.

Rachael explains: “Caroline attended the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance three times a week in order to familiarise herself with the environment on Mount Everest and help adopt strategies for her trek.

“Extreme temperatures and low oxygen levels were controlled and set within the chamber to expose Caroline to the challenges ahead. This was an opportunity to ensure her equipment, hydration strategies and walking pace were appropriate for her exciting journey. The team provided Caroline with further advice, medical hints and tips in order for her to safely reach her goal on the mountain. She was continuously monitored within the chamber through physiological assessments and simple questionnaires, and coped extremely well within these environments.

Caroline continued to monitor her health and performance on the trek using the strategies learned within the chamber.”

Caroline was due to begin her ascent on the world’s tallest mountain on 23rd December but, due to fog, she had to wait

in Kathmandu for two days and started her trek on Christmas Day. This forced her to compress her trip by a couple of days, which is even greater testament to her training and dedication to ensuring she reached Base Camp on New Year’s Eve. Caroline adds: “I had a fantastic time climbing to Mount Everest Base Camp and I didn’t suffer from acute mountain sickness, which I believe was due to me being fully acclimatised to the high altitude through my sessions in the Environmental Chamber.

“The team at the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, they really made my trip an enjoyable experience from start to finish; assisting with my research and planning of the trek, developing a tailored training regime for me, testing my kit and sharing in my achievement.

“I’ve now got the travelling bug and I’m looking forward to planning my next adventure – I would encourage anyone who is thinking of challenging themselves to just go for it, with the right expertise and preparation anything is possible!”

New High Precision Mole Map Clinic at HCa Healthcare UK at The Wilmslow Hospital People with suspicious moles and lesions can now look forward to more accurate screening, thanks to a new Automated Total Body Mapping system (ATBM), which is currently only available privately in the region at HCA Healthcare UK at The Wilmslow Hospital. Melanoma skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK. Over the last decade, malignant melanoma incidence rates have increased by almost half (46%) across Britain.

Melanocytes are cells which make melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. They also form moles and it is recognised that having moles is a risk factor in melanoma. Early diagnosis is key in treating melanomas, as most can be removed after fairly minor surgery. In 80 to 90% of cases, melanoma can be excised with no recurrence.

MOLE MAPPING CLINIC Total body photography is the most accurate way to track potential changes in moles and lesions for early detection of possible skin cancer. Traditionally,

the process has been cumbersome and time-consuming, however, the new ATBM system, which is the first its kind, enables quick and precise examination of all body moles. The ATBM technology takes total body images (four sides, palms and soles) in approximately five minutes. The camera is designed to move up and down automatically, while taking illuminated photos of the whole body. The highresolution dermatoscopic pictures enable the consultant dermatologist to pick up any suspicious moles and lesions, which are then subject to a further clinical and dermatoscopic examination. This two-step approach helps to ensure that anything suspicious is detected as early as possible.

Six Years in Syria This month sees the conflict in Syria enter its sixth year. Since the violence started on 15th March 2011, it is estimated that over 470,000 people have been killed – 55,000 of them children. Greater Manchester’s leading humanitarian aid charity, Human Appeal, has been on the ground in war-ravaged Syria since the fighting started, delivering help to wherever it has been needed.

Human Appeal’s CEO Othman Moqbel talked to us about what it’s like trying to help people in one of the most dangerous areas in the world.

“At Human Appeal, we are in a unique position to talk about the reality on the ground in Syria due to our unrivalled access throughout the conflict,” explains Othman.

“We use local networks and contacts to get aid to areas where others cannot.

This is why agencies like the World Food Programme, the United Nation’s OCHA, Orphans in Need, Qatar Charity, the UN-managed humanitarian fund, UNICEF and UNFPA work with us or use us to deliver their aid.”

Othman continues: “For most organisations, if they and their work were being targeted by airstrikes on a regular basis, they would either move their location of work or just stop all together. The fact that Human Appeal has not only continued to operate in such conditions in Syria, but grown our operation there, speaks not only

of Human Appeal staff’s unwavering commitment to provide aid to where it is needed most, but the desperation of Syrians within their own country for basic necessities, and the demand and generosity of our donors to meet their needs.”

According to Othman, whose charity works out of Cheadle, delivering the vital work throughout the conflict has been incredibly problematic: “Throughout the past six years, with the security situation deteriorating, Human Appeal has seen setbacks such as our hospitals and schools bombed, and cross-border issues that restrict the movement of our staff in the region. However, this has only made us more determined.”

Despite the almost daily terror in Syria, Othman believes that it is possible for conditions to improve to help the people in Syria. He detailed ways in which it could be easier for aid workers to deliver help to those who need it most: “There needs to be greater protection for aid workers, medical workers and civilians inside Syria,” says Othman. “A truck full of flour is not a legitimate military target. Health facilities need to be made into ‘no fly zones’; we have had maternity hospitals (which are buildings full of babies, pregnant women and doctors) nearly hit by airstrikes. Similar precautions need to be taken around schools, and for staff and

children making their way to and from school – it is hard enough for children to live a structured, normal life in a conflict zone. Schools being destroyed is not just detrimental for children’s short-term education, it is scarring their long-term mental health and life chances.

“Internally Displaced People (IDPs), like refugees, face unique challenges.

Children and women need to be protected against gender violence, and there needs to be better access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities (WASH) in the informal settlements that IDPs stay in. Human trafficking is also a big threat to vulnerable people. There needs to be greater enforcement of laws against the traffickers.”

Human Appeal marks the anniversary of the Syrian conflict every year with an event in Parliament. Othman tells us what he will ask of policy makers: “Our proposed solutions are not new, they are not groundbreaking, but they are desperately needed. Like all generational struggles, leaders need to emerge, leaders who speak out, leaders who want to unite and not divide. However, this figure cannot solve this crisis alone, parties need to start working together and cooperating at all levels. All parties need to respect international laws and human rights, and people who serve in the humanitarian field need to be protected.”

What are these changes in Dividend Tax? The Chancellor announced that from april 2016, dividend tax credit will be scrapped and replaced by a tax-free dividend allowance of £5,000 per person, per annum. in addition, the rates of taxation on dividend income above the £5,000 level have been increased to the following: • • •

7.5% for basic-rate taxpayers; 32.5% for higher-rate taxpayers; 38.1% for additional-rate taxpayers.

How might this affect me if…..

I receive £10,000 of dividend income and earn £10,000 of non-dividend income.

I am a higher-rate taxpayer as a result of my non-dividend earnings and I receive dividends totalling £3,000 per annum.

Under the new regime this individual would pay no tax on their dividend income, as it would fall within the £5,000 dividend allowance. Under the current rules this would be taxed at a marginal rate of 25%, giving rise to a tax bill of £750. Hence this individual would be better off by £750. as you can see from these examples, anyone with non-dividend income at or above the personal allowance level (£11,000 per annum) and receiving dividends above the £5,000 per annum level would be worse off under the new regime.

This is because the marginal rates for all taxpayers on that dividend income are higher than they were previously.

What can be done by your accountant?

•

• The first £5,000 of dividend income would be covered by the dividend allowance, so would be tax free. The £10,000 of non-dividend income and a further £1,000 of dividend income would be covered by the personal allowance.

•

• The remaining £4,000 of dividend income will be taxed at the new basic rate of 7.5% for dividends, leaving £300 of tax to pay. This is £300 more than a taxpayer would pay under the previous regime – where, as a basic-rate taxpayer, the effective rate on dividends is 0% and the non-dividend income would have been covered by the personal allowance.

ASK THE EXPERTS What is Inheritance Tax (IHT)?

IHT is a tax on the estate of someone who has passed away. IHT is normally payable if the value of your estate is above £325,000 for a single person or £650,000 for a married couple. Any amount above these figures is taxed at 40%. With the average sold house price in Hale and Bowdon over £600,000, property alone can present an issue for many.

Property prices keep going up, so why hasn’t the threshold changed?

Recently, the government announced a change to IHT thresholds for the first time since 2009. From April this year, many property owners will be able to use a ‘main residence nil-rate band’ which, subject to certain criteria, will increase their threshold by £100,000, rising to £175,000 by 2020. Unfortunately, this isn’t as straight forward as it sounds.

What can I do?

Due to the complexity of IHT, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer. Good financial planning can reduce, or even eradicate, any IHT issues that you may have, putting you in control of when and how you pass on your wealth to your family. As important as reducing the tax burden may be, the succession planning of your wealth is often many people’s primary objective.

Following an RTA, my lower jaw was left toothless and I had dentures made. They were uncomfortable, ill-fitting and unsatisfactory. The dentures were relined, but this procedure made little difference.

Denture quality is critical in getting the best out of them, starting with a highly accurate sequence of impressions. One impression cannot achieve the accuracy we require. The alternative is to use dental implants; either to replace the denture with fixed-in teeth, which removes pressure on the gum, or to help secure a loose denture. Stopping the dentures moving will reduce any discomfort.

I have severe deterioration of the bones and gums in my jaw. My diet consists of soft foods. I’m finding it difficult to eat and I’ve lost confidence and feel depressed.

If you have problems to this extent, then you will probably lose teeth and need to consider replacements.

The first step is for a dentist to assess the health of the teeth, gums and bone to see whether the situation can be treated and the natural teeth preserved. There are many options for the treatment of tooth, gum and bone disease.

Does homework benefit learning and, if so, how?

A recent homework review has provided a base for changes to Withington’s homework policy. Findings showed that homework is beneficial to learning, both as a means of developing independent study skills and in consolidating learning that has taken place in the school day. It was considered to be most useful when set in reasonable amounts and related directly to the work done in class.

What is the ‘right amount’ of homework?

This depends on the child's age and stage. We focus on quality rather than quantity – it’s more important to us at Withington that it is meaningful and adds to the overall learning experience, whilst at the same time ensuring that homework should not prevent a pupil pursuing other interests, or put pressure on family life.

What impact does homework have on wellbeing?

Feedback underlined the impact that homework can have on family life and extra-curricular activities, so we designate a no-homework week each term for our lower school pupils. We also decided to stop setting work for the next day, which gives pupils and parents greater flexibility to plan and manage homework alongside other commitments in the week.

Knee replacements have been around for a long time, are there any new developments with knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery usually is very successful, with one of the highest ‘quality of life’ improvement scores of all surgeries. Technology has been developed to allow use of what is called either patient-specific instrumentation or customised/bespoke knee replacement (thekneedoc.co.uk/knee-replacementsurgery/customised-knee-replacement-surgery).

This involves taking a scan of the knee, from which a 3-dimensional model of the joint is made. This can be used to generate either specific instruments, used to undertake your knee replacement, or to produce a specific, bespoke knee replacement implant. There are many potential advantages of these techniques, which your surgeon can discuss with you.

What are the changes to dividend tax?

During the last term of Parliament, the Chancellor announced comprehensive changes to the income tax treatment of dividends. These changes came into effect from 6th April 2016, meaning that anybody who receives dividend income may incur an income tax charge. In previous years, the most tax-efficient method of paying a director and shareholder was by paying them a nominal salary, which was supplemented via dividend. The dividends were being taxed at a rate of 10%, but this tax was a notional tax, which meant that it was never actually payable.

How are dividends now taxed?

The new method has scrapped the notional tax credit entirely. Dividends will now be taxed as follows: £0-£5,000 – 0% £5,001-£32,000 – 7.5% £32,001-£150,000 – 32.5% £150,000+ – 38.1% This means that any director who takes over £5,000 in dividend will be subject to an actual tax charge.

Whilst this still remains the most tax-efficient method of paying a director, it becomes more critical what a director is withdrawing from their company as dividend.

What is writer’s cramp?

Writer’s cramp is a form of focal dystonia that can cause localised pain and spasms in the small muscles of the hand, and in rare cases, the forearm. Fatigue can then occur and cause further discomfort when writing for prolonged periods of time.

What can be done to treat this condition?

It is best to seek advice from a multi-disciplinary team which offers a holistic approach and allows the sufferer to be assessed by various experts during the same visit.

Once a hand specialist, like myself, has excluded a structural cause for the writer’s cramp, an occupational therapist, such as Rachel, will attempt to unravel the cause of the pain and may make suggestions based on the above associated causes. They may also recommend a variety of pen styles to try, so as to offload the hand and prevent cramping. It is often a case of trial and error, until a pen is found that is comfortable for sustained periods of writing. The therapist will also work with the patient to restore balance to the hand muscles and eliminate bad habits.

EDUCATION NEWS Pupils of Manchester’s suffragette school get first glimpse of potential Pankhurst statue

Pupils from Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG), the school that suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst chose for her three daughters, were given first glimpse of six shortlisted designs for a statue of Emmeline that will be erected in St Peter’s Square in 2019.

The students attended an unveiling event at Portcullis House in London as guests of Jeff Smith, MP for Manchester Withington, and Andrew Simcock, Councillor for Didsbury East. Councillor Simcock has led the WoManchester Statue Project since 2014. It will see the first female statue to be erected in Manchester for over 100 years.

The event saw six sculptors – each shortlisted to create the final statue – unveil a 40cm bronze maquette of their vision.

Alongside the 12 MHSG students – who were all selected based on an interest in

art, politics or both – female MPs from the House of Commons were also invited to share their opinions on the pieces and cast a vote for their favourite.

It was fascinating for me to speak with the people behind each of the six pieces, to learn more about their creative processes and just what it was about Emmeline that inspired them.”

“Throughout the campaign, MHSG students have been interested, engaged and enthusiastic; it was only right that they were present at the official unveiling. It was a real privilege to hear the thoughts and ideas of such articulate young women who represent a great future for Manchester.”

Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) recently hosted their first ever Cheshire Schools’ Photography competition for pupils in Years 5 and 6. The shortlisted schools involved were Vernon Primary in Poynton, and Wilmslow Grange and Loreto Preparatory in Altrincham. The competition also included a group of girls from the host school, AESG. Entrants were required to submit a high-quality image, which had been taken by them and fell into one of the following categories: ‘I am inspired by’, ‘challenges that help me grow’ and ‘I look forward to’. The pupils also had to write a 100-word explanation as to why or how their photograph linked to their chosen category. The pupils had a fantastic day at AESG and enjoyed exploring light painting and creative photography techniques. The winners were Lola Ashton (Year 5, Vernon Primary School) and George Church (Year 6, Wilmslow Grange), and all entrants happily celebrated their peers’ success.

Firefighters educating youngsters at Alderley Edge School for Girls Wilmslow Fire Service visited Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) to help nursery and pre-school pupils with a special project called ‘People Who Help Us’. The project is part of their wider ‘learning about the world’ education.

The fire service talked to the girls about what firefighters do and how important it is to have a mix of male

and female staff in the crew. They showed the girls the equipment used by the service and the protective uniforms they wear.

The girls were extremely interested in how the firefighters access water when they attend a fire and how they knew when water was running low.

The service was more than happy to answer and, if you didn’t already know,

the water is kept in a tank at the centre of the fire engine!

The girls at AESG said they had a fantastic morning with the fire service, especially when they were each given the opportunity to sit in the back of the fire engine. They said it was “very exciting” when the driver of the fire engine put the sirens and blue light on as they drove away.

This year, 22 pupils from The Manchester Grammar School received offers for a wide range of courses at Oxford and Cambridge, placing MGS in a very select group of top academic schools nationally.

Charlie, who has an offer to study History at Oxford, said: “'Naturally, I am delighted to have been offered a place at Oxford.

It has been an ambition of mine for a long time to study at such a prestigious institution and I'm incredibly grateful to have this opportunity. I am really looking forward to both the academic aspect of university life, but also the sporting side as I am hoping to get involved with the rugby side as much as possible in the new term.”

Among those are 17-year-old Tom Appleby, 18-year-old Charlie Pozniak, and 18-year-old Limeng Zhu, all from Didsbury, and Adib Badri, 17, from Wythenshawe.

Mharab Choudhury, 18, of Burnage and Rupert Mitchell, 18, of Withington, also received offers.

Tom, who has received an offer to study Italian and Spanish at Pembroke College, Oxford, said: “I am delighted to have received an offer from Pembroke College to study Italian and Spanish.

Adib has an offer to study Modern and Medieval Languages at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and added: “Upon hearing I received an offer from Cambridge, I was ecstatic. It is something that I have dreamed of since a very young age and to be offered a place is a real honour. I am hoping to study French and Spanish and then a law conversion course and go into international law.”

Premier League star drops in to launch new Football Academy Gareth Barry may be just a few appearances away from equalling Ryan Giggs' Premier League record, but he took time out to visit Ellesmere College in Shropshire As Patron of their new Football Academy, Gareth joined up with the elite football coaches and current Ellesmere players for an afternoon session. The former England international has made a staggering 620 Premier League appearances during a career that has included spells with Aston Villa, Manchester City and, for the last three years, Everton Football Club.

Ellesmere College will be supported by EduKick Manchester, which employs fulltime UEFA-qualified coaches and brings its 10-year pedigree of player development to the programme. EduKick will also provide a number of global connections within the footballing community, including academies in Brazil, USA, Mexico and Europe.

The independent school’s new Football Academy will open this September in association with EduKick Manchester.

The programme will deliver 12 hours of professional academy-standard coaching each week, alongside subject-based qualifications including GCSEs, BTEC Diploma in Sport, A Levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Gareth's appearance at the school follows ex-Premiership footballer Jon Macken, who coaches with EduKick Manchester. Jon, who was once bought by Manchester City for a whopping £5 million, said: "We are trying to help our young players form a strong idea of where they want to go in football, everything we do is designed to improve our young player’s technical ability and understanding."

"The school has done a fantastic thing,” said Gareth, “and agreed a coaching deal with some top coaches that allow the lads to get some proper training as well as focus on their school work, which is important too, it's a fantastic set-up."

Each player will receive an individual player plan to develop fitness, strength and conditioning. The plan will also include physiotherapy, nutrition and dietary advice, along with the opportunity to enjoy international tours, games against

professional clubs, and visits to top sports universities. Players will also have the opportunity to attend football trials endorsed by the Professional Football Scouts Association (PFSA).

Headmaster Brendan Wignall explained: "Football is clearly the most played and popular sport in the world and, whilst always remaining committed to the wide range of sports offered at Ellesmere, it seems logical to launch our new Football Academy.

We are an Athlete Friendly Education Centre, an accolade awarded by the International Baccalaureate Diploma, and EduKick have over ten years' experience in international coaching. We are delighted that Gareth Barry has agreed to be our Patron and our expectation is that we will soon be seeing Ellesmere College students in Premier League academies and clubs.

CARLTON ENSEMBLE Fay Wertheimer talks to Penny Worth about the history of the ensemble, playing before royalty and the two tracks she dreads anyone requesting…

Violist Fay Wertheimer formed Carlton Ensemble’s string quartet and flute group for a one-off City Art Gallery fundraiser in 1982. 36 years on, the quirky, quality quintet and its unnaturally-blonde dowager are still intact. Private and corporate punters enjoy Carlton’s take on anything from Mozart to Game of Thrones, and benefit from its unique experience in background music.

Carlton’s friendly pros have played hotels, castles, churches, synagogues, galleries, soggy fields, parks, shopping malls, private houses, building sites, old age homes, clubs, pubs, crematoria, airports, railway stations and more.

Tell us more about the Carlton Ensemble line-up…

Two violins, viola, cello and, for easylistening and individuality, the flute. We’ve only had two leaders, our cellist started in 2000, our main flute came the week his 22-year-old son arrived, BBC Philharmonic and Hallé players have ‘depped’ for us – and our daughters too! Carltonians, a.k.a. the Crisis Quintet, have married, divorced, separated, fallen in love, been ill, recovered, had children – and now grandkids! Present ages range from 18 to, well, I’m not saying!

We’re a slice of real life.

Would you say classical music has become more mainstream/accessible in this country?

Culturally, Brits avoid classical music and think chamber groups are for ‘toffs only’ at soirees, recitals and concerts. Luckily, telly ads, Classic FM, the web and umpteen student quartets have debunked the myths.

Pop music played classical style has become run-of-the-mill.

What’s behind the ensemble’s enduring popularity?

Word of mouth, Yellow Pages and my shameless touting. Nowadays it’s the internet – and more touting! Our longevity and repeat bookings are down to players’ talents, our repertoire and approachability.

In 1982, quartet arrangements of light music were rare. A punter complained that we had no Elvis, so I sorted it. Tastes have changed – pop’s taken over the classical.

How would you describe your job?

A privilege we take very seriously. No one employs us for a booze-up, but for their special occasion – a party, product launch, dinner, wake – any rite of passage. Our responsibility is to create the desired atmosphere, often whilst people chat.

Any musician unwilling to respect either client or function shouldn’t play.

How loyal are your clients?

Clients’ siblings often contact us for weddings. Corporate-wise, we have serenaded The French restaurant’s diners, at The Midland Hotel, for 15 consecutive New Year’s Eves, played five Royal Television Society North West Awards dinners, led 28 West Didsbury Christmas Eve carol bashes – now at The Metropolitan – and raised in

excess of £35,000 at Alderley’s 36 Annual Charity Carol Night concerts.

Any particular memories stand out for you?

Accompanying a lad proposing on bended knee; performing at the UK’s first ever civil partnership; playing and almost dehydrating by an indoor pool one Valentine’s night; being taxied home in time for work after opening AIR 2000 Glasgow; and twice performing for Princess Anne, who remembered us – it’s endless!

Amazing memories… but how about disasters?

The Queen cancelling us the eve of the Commonwealth Games; requesting cash from a bride’s dad – a High Court judge; forgetting my viola three times – and having a Cheadle cabbie deliver it to M&S Warrington for £17; playing a three-hour wedding and Olive & Vine residency with a freshly-fractured thumb – I’d tripped over my long skirt; ducking a solo in front of 500 science bods, because our over-enthusiastic cellist whacked and bust my C string.

And gig garb?

We’ve all left things at home.

I hate Sex on Fire and Bittersweet Symphony!

My Country puts their words centre stage as real testimonials are interwoven with speeches from party leaders in this new play written by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and directed by Rufus Norris.

ALPINE IS BACK Sports car fans of a certain age will remember the name Alpine – the French manufacturer of racing cars that used Renault engines since the 1940s and became part of Renault in the 70s, then sadly stopped production in 1995.

Depending on your age, you might associate the Alpine name with lightweight, turbocharged rallying coupes in the 70s, or the more muscular V6 rear-engined GT cars of the 80s and 90s, which were known among connoisseurs as the ‘great unsung supercar’.

The Alpine engineers were responsible for the more famous racing and roadgoing Renault Sport versions of the Renault Clio, but the brand name was mothballed in the 90s because the uncompromising performance of its latest designs was simply too expensive to put into production. Anyway, more than two decades later, it’s back.

We don’t know too much about the new model yet, except that the aluminium two-seater sports car that is being premiered this spring, named the A110, reflects the timeless principles of compact size, light weight and agility that made the success of its predecessor the ‘Berlinette’. To anyone that remembers the original Alpines, the design will be instantly recognisable.

Aimed at the market segment currently dominated by the likes of the Porsche Cayman and the Alfa Romeo 4C, we’re expecting this circa-£50k mini-supercar to start appearing on the streets later this year.

VELAR IN THE MIDDLE More history, while we’re in the mood for reminiscing. Back in 1969, when the first prototype Range Rovers came out, they weren’t even called Range Rovers at all. Land Rover badged them Velar. That vehicle changed the world, and spawned every SUV, from ‘soft-roaders’ to the luxury off-roaders, that we see all around us today.

So now they’re bringing back the Velar name.

The new Velar sits in the middle of the Range Rover hierarchy, between the compact Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. At a price point starting from around £45k, the Velar represents, we’re told, a “reductive approach”. Minimalism is very fashionable right now; getting rid of lots of knobs 80

and switches, and replacing them with clean spaces, for example – but let’s not forget, this is an idea shared by the original Velar, which blended premium materials, build quality and comfort with a level of practicality and simple lines, all of which made it an immediate hit.

In the time since then – amazingly nearly half a century – the Velar has come a long way. Its DNA remains unmistakably Land Rover, but some of its new technology, such as Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, super-slim matrix laser-LED headlights, flush deployable door handles and burnished copper-coloured detailing, place it firmly in the future.
