I hope this issue finds you escaping somewhere hot, or enjoying some well-earned time off work. I love this time of year, when the kids have finished school. The days seem so much longer without the usual chores of the school day.

This is our summer issue, so when we come back in September we will be well on our way to Christmas. Talking of Christmas, we recently went to the NEXT Christmas Press Day to see what’s in store for the festive season. I’ve chosen my favourite pieces, but there’s so much to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

LOCAL NEWS MADELEY DANCERS RAISE MONEY FOR KIDSCAN The Madeley School of Dancing was opened at Didsbury’s Emmanuel Church Hall in 1958

by Vera Madeley. In 1988 her daughter, Sally Owens, began teaching at the school and took over as principal in 1996. The school has given the children of Didsbury a happy, caring environment in which to learn dance styles such as Ballet, Tap, Modern stage, Street, Contemporary and Cheer dance.

Every two years the school puts on a show providing the children with an exciting experience that builds confidence and raises self-esteem.The proceeds have always been donated to charity but this year’s show, at The Peter Barkworth theatre in Stockport, saw a record- breaking donation of £2,320 given to the Kidscan charity. Kidscan, based at Salford University, which specialises in research into children’s cancers, were delighted with the money raised as it will help them immensely in their work.

A cheque presentation was held, where the children performed some of their dances in front of parents and representatives of Kidscan and Kidscan, in return, presented The Madeley School of Dancing with a certificate of thanks.

THOUSANDS OF AWESOME BRICKS FOR WOOD STREET MISSION Following its hugely successful Easter Bring-A-Brick campaign, which called on young LEGO® lovers to donate a brick from their own collection, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester this week handed over 10,000 bricks to local charity Wood Street Mission.

Throughout April and May, Bring-A-Brick asked visitors to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester to delve into their own stock of LEGO® to add a brick to a gigantic LEGO® Easter Egg creation in the attraction.The completed egg has since been dismantled and all the bricks have been delivered to the charity.

Wood Street Mission will now distribute the bricks to the struggling Manchester and Salford families who use their projects. Every year the charity helps about 7,000 children and 3,000 families.

As Roseanne Sweeney, Wood Street Mission’s CEO explains: “We are delighted that LEGOLAND Discovery Centre asked for us to be a part of the Bring-A-Brick campaign. Quality toys are an essential part of a child’s education; however, parents on low incomes can’t always afford to buy them for their children. I’m sure that the donation will be appreciated by the children we support.”

Alex Bidolak, master model maker, who oversaw the creation of the Easter Egg, and LEGOLAND Discovery Centre’s mascot, Bertie, handed the bricks over to Wood Street Mission’s official mascot Woody and fundraiser Sophie Bell.

Alex Bidolak said: “Every child should have the chance to experience the fun that LEGO® brings and that’s why we teamed up with Wood Street Mission to make this

possible. The Bring-A-Brick campaign was fantastic; the huge public support meant that we could build a gigantic Easter Egg and donate 10,000 bricks to charity, and it also meant that families who are supported

by Wood Street Mission got to visit the centre, too.”

BOWLED OVER IN BOWDON Events in the City hosted a pre-Ashes sportsmen’s dinner at The Bowdon Club.

Over 140 people attended a great evening with ex-England cricket Captain Graham Gooch OBE. Graham talked about some of his great sporting achievement’s including his 333 against India at Lord’s in 1990, a record that still stands as the highest ever innings at Lords.The next event is scheduled for 18 September at the Point, Lancashire Cricket Club, and will feature a live screening of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony and the England v Fiji match.

MANCHESTER MIDNIGHT WALK St Ann's Hospice is already planning a special 10th anniversary celebration of its Manchester Midnight Walk next year after its latest triumph. Around 2,000 walkers paraded through the streets on June 19, raising an estimated £200,000 for one of the oldest adult hospices in the country. The charity's flagship fundraising event has continued to pull in the crowds every year since it began in 2007, creating a unique late-night party atmosphere.

The date for the 2016 event was revealed even before the first finishers had arrived back at Manchester Central after completing a 10k route through the city centre. Online registration for 24 June 2016 is now open with organisers determined to mark the occasion in style.

TV fitness instructor Mr Motivator got walkers in the mood with an energetic warm up. Derrick Evans hails from Manchester, in the parish of St Ann on the island of Jamaica. He said, "The two Manchesters are the same because they both like to party except it's always 90 degrees over there! St Ann’s Hospice

is a great charity and does such wonderful work in the community with all its services provided free of charge."

Many walkers take part in memory of lost loved ones and a minute's silence was held in their honour beforehand.

Rachel McMillan, Director of Clinical Services at St Ann's, and nurses Sarah McDonnell and Kelly Keane made emotional addresses about the hospice's work. Alison Gilbody, Director of Income Generation and Communications at St Ann's Hospice, said:, "I'd like to thank everyone who took part in one of our biggest fundraising events of the year.

Once again, walkers turned out in force to demonstrate their support for St Ann's and our charity simply wouldn't survive without such kind donations from sponsorship and entries.

"With an ageing population, more people will be needing hospice care in the future and it's important to remember that all our services are provided free of charge, with only around a third of our income from the NHS.That is why events like this are so important to enable us to continue providing much-needed care."

The dress code was ‘80s Chicks' for four Altrincham walkers who were walking in the event for the first time. Julie Seddon, Suzanne Jackson, Barbara Howarth and Debbie Dawson needed little excuse to join the fun at the Manchester Midnight Walk. Julie joked, "It gets us out on a Friday night for a change! We decided on ‘80s Chicks’ because that was the best era." The group were remembering Debbie's friend David Toft, a lollipop man, who died five years ago.

Off-duty neighbourhood police officers from Stockport West took part in the Midnight Walk, raising £660 for St Ann's Hospice. Sgt Phil Lowe entered into the spirit of the occasion by appearing as GMP mascot panda, Constable Cub. Police Constable Rob Hetherington, whose beat includes Heald Green, where St Ann's has a site, had the idea of taking part to help forge closer links with the community.

MANCHESTER CELEBRATES WITH THE HAPPIEST 5K ON THE PLANET! Nearly 10,000 happy ‘Color Runners’ headed to Manchester’s Etihad Campus last month when the Happiest 5k on the Planet returned to the city for the third time.

Starting as a blank canvas and finishing head-to-toe in every colour of the rainbow, fun-loving runners from across the city and beyond took part in the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’. Following a course that meandered round Manchester’s Etihad Campus, participants were covered in coloured powder after every kilometre before making their way across the finish line and into the Festival Finish.

In celebration of their efforts, ‘Color Runners’ then partied in true Mancunian style, filling the skies with vibrant multicolour as Capital DJs pumped awesome live music from the stage. Driving the concept of the untimed 5k, The Color Run™ is about enjoying a day of fitness and fun, with the aim for participants to cross the finish line with smiles on their faces. Today saw participants jog, walk, skip and dance their way around the route with friends, family and colleagues.

THE ANTIQUES TEAM RAISING CASH FOR FRANCIS HOUSE Antiques owners, keen to discover the value of their collectibles, can have their prized heirlooms assessed by a team of experts from the world of television.

Charles Hanson’s Derbyshire based team of valuers are holding a series of eight Charity Antiques Valuation Days at The Coach and Four in Wilmslow and are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds in aid of Francis House Children’s Hospice. Charles, a regular on TV’s Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic, puts in a personal appearance at the events when he’s not filming for the new series of Antiques Road Trip. Joined by fellow presenter and Prestbury based antiques dealer Margie Cooper, the Hansons team share their expertise with members of the public in return for a donation to the hospice. Charles said, “People curious about the significance of items handed down to them, or valuables they’ve had hiding in the attic for years, can come along and not only find out what they are worth but also help out a very worthy cause.”

The valuation days are held at The Coach & Four, 69/71 Alderley Road, Wilmslow SK9 1PA on selected Thursdays, from 11 am to 3pm. Future dates include August 20, September 17, October 15 and November 19.

LANDLORDS BEWARE Landlords will be aware of the legal requirement to register any deposit taken from a residential tenant within 30 days of receiving the money. However, how many landlords are fully aware of the consequences of failing to do so and how many know that they need to provide prescribed information to a tenant? Most of the landlords we put the question to thought the only penalty could be a Court Order requiring them to pay up to 3 times the deposit to the tenant. However, the consequence of not registering the deposit within 30 days can be far more detrimental to landlords.

Since April 2012, any unwitting landlord who accidentally forgets to register the deposit within 30 days is now prevented from serving a valid Section 21 notice requiring possession of their property at the end of the tenancy. The options to the landlord to obtain vacant possession have become extremely limited if the tenant refuses to leave the property. If the tenant is in serious breach of the tenancy terms, such as being in rent arrears, then there are other available options. However, without a serious breach of the tenancy agreement or the tenant’s willingness to leave, the landlord is now left in a very difficult position in respect of gaining vacant possession of their own property!

How does the change in the law affect landlords?

It can mean that even though you have acted in good faith but forgotten to register the deposit within 30 days, (even if you were in a coma!) or you fail to provide your tenant with prescribed information you may not be able to gain possession of your property.

This is, of course, intolerable because it means a tenant may remain in the property for many years. One of the options available to the landlord to enable a valid Section 21 Notice to be served is to return the full deposit to the tenant.

However, it does not appear to us that the tenant is under any obligation to accept it. The only other alternative is for the tenant to make an Application to the Court seeking an Order that the landlord pays up to 3 times the deposit to the tenant. It appears there is no legal obligation on the tenant to either accept the returned deposit or make an Application to the Court. In the circumstances that the tenant doesn’t take one of the above mentioned options a landlord cannot serve a valid Section 21 Notice.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS IN ALTRINCHAM CONTINUE ON SCHEDULE

Phase one of improvements to public areas in Altrincham is making good progress, with Goose Green now close to completion and works to Shaws Road, George Street and Cross Street well under way. In Goose Green, Yorkstone paving has now been laid around

all building frontages, complemented by striking segmental arched paving across the centre of the square. A series of appropriately sized trees (complete with subtle pea-lighting) are due to be planted, while the popular ‘geese’ statue will be relocated to the side of the square, making more room for outdoor seating in front of bars and restaurants.

Work to the top of Cross Street began in mid-May and is now well on track, with concrete nearing completion and some Yorkstone paving already in place.

Works on adjacent George Street have encountered a small delay following the

discovery of an unforeseen defect in a United Utilities sewer. Urgent remedial work will be carried out by United Utilities to resolve this issue and ensure that delay to the overall project is limited to one week. Phase one also includes Stamford New Road (in front of the new Interchange) with work here scheduled to take place in the autumn. The works form part of a wider project to transform key routes through the town centre, forming part of the Altrincham Forward vision to make Altrincham a more attractive place to live, visit, shop, invest in and enjoy.

SUMMER CRUISES: PREPARE TO BE DAZZLED AS SIR PETER BLAKE’S NEW COMMISSION SETS SAIL ON THE MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL Unlike other forms of camouflage, dazzle works not by concealing but by baffling the eye. Introduced in 1917, this extraordinary effect was achieved by painting ships in contrasting stripes and curves that broke up its shape. Realised in monochrome and colour, each ship’s dazzle pattern was unique in order to avoid making classes of ships instantly recognisable to enemy U-boats and aircraft. That, of course, doesn’t apply to the Mersey Ferry ‘Snowdrop’, which will be coming and going to Salford Quays in August and September this summer.

Snowdrop is the only moving vessel in the UK to be dazzled by a contemporary

artist, as part of First World War commemorations. Sir Peter Blake’s spectacular design ‘Everybody Razzle Dazzle’ took seven painters over 3,000 hours and consumed over 800 litres of paint in 22 colours. The Ship Canal is one of the UK’s great waterways and is a significant part of the history of both Manchester and Liverpool.There can be no finer way to experience it than on this extraordinary Mersey Ferry. In addition to the regular Snowdrop services, four extra-special evenings in conjunction with IWM North, part of Imperial War Museums, are planned for Friday August 14, Sunday 30 and Sunday 13 of September.

The Museum will be opening later than normal on these dates so that passengers on the Snowdrop can add a visit to their cruise for a special day out. Visitors will enjoy an on-board exhibition explaining the history of dazzle camouflage and the role artists played in the First World War. Passengers can then find out more about the war and the dramatic effect it had on people’s lives in the Museum’s exhibition displays.

Charlotte’s Diary I have been wondering what term – or indeed meme - would be used to describe the opposite of ‘mindfulness’? Would it be ‘brainoverloadness?’ ‘mindemptyness’? Or perhaps ‘nomindatallitis’ (a personal favourite).

My brain is fried. So sad in one so (ahem) young.Try as I might, I do struggle with my memory. Everything has to be written down or it is gone. I have even taken to using the camera on my phone instead of writing things down.This is a particularly useful trick I recently used in Space NK when I tried to note down the name of a fancy French product I could barely read, let alone spell.

A friend once kindly said that memory is all about the amount you have to fit in, and given I have lots in my head at any one time, I could be forgiven for not remembering everything. Another friend said she tested her memory by never writing anything down; instead she would commit all invitation dates, child play dates, birthdays, shopping lists etc to her brain in a bid to keep it agile. Needless to say, I haven’t seen much of her over the past year.

Sometimes it can be ridiculously hard to remember what happened over a weekend because I was going from one thing to the next in such a seamless way that it all just merges into one.

Take last weekend for example. It starts early with refreshing power walk through Dunham Massey taking in the lovely deer as they stir for breakfast.Then I walk the dog before hopping on a train to London and meeting friends for lunch on the South Bank to celebrate a special birthday. Gifts (thankfully packed) are presented and it is then a mooch around the latest exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, which starts in a pitch-black meandering tunnel/corridor, with the finale to the afternoon heading down a terrifying helter skelter attached to the side of the building. Not good.

Then it’s straight to Clapham J for drinks before travelling to north London to collapse in a heap.The following day is spent playing the Red Herring Game with a nine-year-old as part of the Crouch End festival. During the last remaining day of the weekend I review quotes and check out the workmanship of double-glazed windows across west London, and finally unblock a drain. I really do live the high life.

Hopefully, if anyone is interested in what I did over the whole summer, I will have a collection of handy photos to act as memory prompts. Aha! That’s why people use Facebook; it’s because their brains are fried.

I like to think I have a lot to fit in my tiny brain, which is the main cause of my problem.

SEAN ANSTEE Leader of Trafford Council

Sean Anstee became the Conservative Leader of Trafford Council in 2014. Aged 28, he is one of the youngest council leaders in the country. Barbara Hallwood from Marketing Profile in Hale caught up with Sean during a visit to the House of Commons.

‘Like many others I was quite surprised when I caught up with Sean; he is a young, extremely knowledgeable, determined, focused ‘man on a mission’.

In fact, as I chat to Sean on the Terrace at the House of Commons, he appears relaxed and more than happy to answer my questions.

Austerity for local authorities is continuing and that means we need to be more creative in our decision-making to save money and sustain services – an example to use is the proposed new partnership with the Hale Community Trust to rebuild the library and create a community hub.

How are you helping to ensure town centres in Trafford benefit from an economic upturn?

Prior to becoming Leader of Trafford Council, Sean spent 11 years working in banking, where he appears to have carved out a very successful career; so Sean, why the change to politics?

A key focus for the Council is Altrincham, and we are working hard to restore the town as the jewel in Trafford’s crown.

We are proud of the new hospital and transport interchange, and we have started a £6million project to transform the public realm. The library will also be relocated to new facilities in the near future.

I like to make a difference and am passionate about all that I do. I want Trafford to be the most economically successful, prosperous and vibrant borough in Greater Manchester.

We are working hard across all our town centres and are regularly campaigning for reform of business rates to reduce the burden for local businesses that want to succeed in a town centre environment.

So what of the future for Sean Anstee?

I am privileged to represent Bowdon and Trafford, to be in the position I hold, and it is incumbent on me to make sure I get the best deal for Trafford residents and businesses.

Across Greater Manchester, we are moving towards greater devolved powers for skills, employment, inward investment, transport, housing and the integration of health and social care.

Increasingly, major decisions that affect local people will be taken locally, not where we are today in Westminster.

I am determined that Trafford will succeed in this new world and that our residents will benefit from improved public services that local decision-making can deliver.

Having spoken to him, I can’t help feel that Sean is really going places. Sean lives in Sale with his partner Thomas and their Patterdale terrier Stanley. They enjoy travelling throughout the UK and much further afield.’

After his secondary education he was keen to get out into the wide world and so, in 1980, left school at 16 to work as a telephone engineer. After a number of years doing this essentially solitary work it became apparent to Roger that he required human contact in his work; given his father’s role, two sisters in nursing and a brother in the police force, there was an air of inevitability that he too would seek to do something to help people.

In 1986 he joined the NHS as a registered nurse at Manchester Royal Infirmary. His training was very much of the traditional old-school type, but it provided a good solid grounding, which was followed by several years in the Infirmary’s extremely challenging Accident and Emergency Department there. While simultaneously developing his skills and gaining invaluable experience there he also completed a part-time Nursing Studies degree at The University of Manchester.

Spells at Oldham and Burnley followed, and it was there that Roger was asked to ‘manage things’, in addition to carrying out his clinical duties. He clearly had a head for it and it soon became apparent that his extensive clinical experience, intellectual capabilities and effective pragmatism were exactly what were required in the then fast-changing and newly evolving NHS. This was a time of immense pressure for the organisation, with necessary and vital changes constantly being introduced and implemented, which impacted heavily on patients and staff alike.

As management roles became ever more prevalent in his day-to-day duties he reinforced his expertise by gaining an MBA from Salford University, all while still working as a nurse.

From there his management roles slowly but surely superseded his nursing.

His evolution from front-line clinical care provider to manager was gradual, but at all times Roger focused his attention on the patients and their needs. He went on to further innovative roles at hospitals across the region, with patient care foremost in his mind as he helped develop and implement clinical and administrative practice.

Since arriving at The Christie nine years ago he’s now the Chief Executive, and is overseeing a period of great optimism for the hospital as it forges ahead in its groundbreaking role as the UK’s leading cancer research and treatment centre. Its history and status should be a source of immense pride for our city, and the great work done there enables many thousands of people to successfully fight their illnesses and live longer lives.

Roger Spencer is now charged with the tremendous responsibility of continuing and ensuring that legacy. With the very best people and facilities to work with, as well as his own experience and proven track record, he seems the perfect fit for the unique Christie.

BEVERLEY UDDIN-KHANDAKAR TALKS TO KAILESH SOLANKI OF KISSDENTAL Kailesh Solanki (GDC: 81952) is the principal dentist and owner of Kissdental, Manchester. He has placed more than 5000 dental implants and has changed the lives of countless patients in search of a perfect smile, even those who were previously too nervous to even enter a dental practice.

Firstly, why did you decide to become a dentist?

I was 16 years old and my brother was just starting Medicine at Oxford University and I wanted to do a professional degree like my brother, but one where I could actually have a life and not work 20 hour days. I had a friend whose father was a dentist, so after shadowing him through the summer holidays I just knew this was a perfect profession for me. The working hours were good, I was dealing with the public which I loved and most of all it allowed me to use artistic flare.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of your job as a dentist?

Genuinely changing the lives of patients who come in to see me, in pain and sometimes very anxious and fearful and watching them transform into someone who loves to smile in no pain and can actually come to the dentist without needing a valium.

You qualified from the University of Manchester in 2003 and have completed a course in implant dentistry. How would you describe your educational experience in dentistry?

The university degree at Manchester was a real look into dentistry and it allowed me to explore all disciplines in dentistry. It is however somewhat basic, especially if you want to perform private dentistry to a high standard. The level of post graduate education in dentistry is superb and enrolling on the right courses post degree both in this country and abroad has given me the tools and confidence to really produce beautiful dentistry.

Kissdental opened in 2005. How has the practice developed since then?

In 2005 I started the clinic in suburbia, a little village in Flixton. My only pull was we were close to the M60 and the Trafford Centre. It’s all about having a vision and not retracting from that no matter how tough things become.

My mission statement was to provide high quality private dentistry at affordable prices whilst always focusing on the patient. With this in mind, over the 10 years the business has grown from strength to strength. We won private practice of the year in 2007 and I won best young dentist in 2008. Now we have three dental clinics spread across Manchester with an excellent reputation in the northwest.

Last month, you appeared on the BBC documentary ‘The Truth About Your Teeth’. How often do you come across cases like Angela’s?

This is more common than you think. Many patients are so phobic when it comes to the dentist that they do these things as opposed to coming to see the dentist. Superglue is some patients’ best friend.

What advice would you give to patients who are reluctant to seek dental help?

The first step is always the hardest, but once you have got through this hurdle, from my experience things are not as bad as they seem and most problems can be sorted out.

As a dental phobia certified dentist, how do you help patients to overcome their dental anxiety?

Sometimes it’s just building a relationship with the patient to break down the anxiety. Other times the patient is so phobic that we can offer oral sedatives and even intra venous sedation to help keep the patients relaxed.

You provide a number of cosmetic dental treatments at Kiss. Which would you say is the most popular and why do you think this is?

Dental implants for missing teeth have become the most popular treatment at Kissdental. We now can replace missing teeth where before the only option was dentures.

People are living longer, want to socialise and be happy with their smile and a gap is a real embarrassment for people.

Could there be an issue higher up in your hip or lower down in your foot/ankle that has caused the injury in the first place? yes, traumatic injuries happen but what I also strive to achieve is to impart my knowledge to you so that we can prevent, to the best of our ability, these problems from happening again.

I am also fully aware that we all lead very busy lives. So we can tailor your physio to you and your lifestyle. If you want an extensive rehab programme of exercises to do that's okay. If you want to fit it in around your current day with a little bit here and there we can do that also.

What's more important is that we work together to try and achieve your goals of coming to physio.

However, there are also times where physio isn't going to fix your problem, so we have good links with the local GPs and consultants. If needed, we work together to get you referred onwards for investigations and a review as required.

It's about teamwork: you and me together can get you back to where you want to be.

Previously a very successful lawyer, Martin had always had a real passion for karate and had practiced it for many years. When he chose to take ‘early retirement’ he decided to set up the club. Since then it has gone from strength to strength.

With the start of the new school term Martin is holding an Open evening at The grammar on Wednesday 23rd September from 5pm – 7pm you are invited to come along and find out more about Hale Karate Club and all that it offers.

Based at The Grammar on Marlborough Road, Bowdon the club now has a membership of almost 100 students with an age range between 5 and 75 years.

Many students enjoy the regular sessions – available up to 3 times each week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For those who want to there are competitions.

Earlier this year one of the students was chosen for the England squad!

It's been a wonderful journey for Oliver too and he's benefited enormously from Hale Karate Club. From the age of 5, I've watched him apply himself weekly to the next karate move to learn and he's learnt how proud he feels when he achieves his next grading, quite a life lesson at such a young age. Additionally, Martin promotes taking part in competitions which is great for the self-esteem and confidence of the children.

Karate isn't just about fighting as we see in the movies; it is a complex sport that improves your physical fitness and enhances your well being in many ways.

Why are you not getting results? you haven’t been on your programme long enough. It’s too soon. you’ve only been working on a new programme for two or three weeks. While you’re probably feeling stronger, you have yet to see that difference and the scales haven’t budged. Relax and stay the course. you won’t see results for at least four to six weeks. you’ve been on your programme too long. If you’ve been exercising regularly for a while and haven’t changed your routine in a couple of months, you’ve probably stopped seeing results. your body needs a change – new exercises and a new ordering of the old exercises.

Bodies are efficient, doing as little as they can in an attempt to protect and minimise energy expenditure. you’re on the wrong programme.

Enrolling on a Zumba class won’t help you build upper body strength. Singlejoint exercises performed with light weights won’t significantly contribute to weight loss. Matching the programme to your individual fitness goals is key to getting results. you’re not lifting heavy enough. If you want to build a stronger, leaner body, you must lift heavy. The only way to stimulate muscle growth (and a leaner physique) is to work with loads that are heavier than your body is used to. Hint: if your handbag weighs ten pounds, bicep curling with fives isn’t going to build muscle. you’re not lifting often enough. you need to train each body part at least once a week to see results. Weight training is based on the principle of progressive resistance; you need to keep making things more challenging to see changes in your physique. Most lifting beginners find that three to four days of strength training each week is ideal.

you’re lifting too often. Beware, when it comes to weight training, there is too much of a good thing. Muscle fibres need time to rest and repair between workouts. That’s when growth occurs.

Train too often and you risk injury and fatigue. Overtraining should be avoided. you’re not eating the right food. Food is fuel, and as such, not all fuels are created equal. your body needs lean protein, healthy fats, lots of vitamins, minerals and fibre and a bit of starchy carbohydrate to function well while you’re training, as well as to translate that training into physical change. you’re eating too much food. Even if your diet is ‘clean’, you may still be eating too much. Excess calories are stored as fat, regardless of whether they come from chicken breasts or donuts. Pay attention to portion control and resist the urge to use exercise to rationalise overeating.

you’re not eating enough food. Eating too little can be just as detrimental to your fitness goals as eating too much. your body requires a certain number of calories each day. For most women, this number will be 1,200 to 1,400. Eat less than this for too long and your body will do everything it can to hold onto those energy stores. you’re paying attention to the wrong measurements. The bathroom scales are not the be-all and end-all when it comes to measuring progress. Body weight can fluctuate by up to five pounds within a day, depending on when and what you’ve eaten, as well as how hydrated you are and what day of your cycle it is. Wrap a tape measure round you instead.

style I’m in trouble. His Lordship thinks I’m having an affair. I mean, okay, so I have been going missing a bit. Mostly at night, and usually after downing a bottle of wine. And yes, I have been getting back into bed in the wee hours with dishevelled hair and dirty knees. And, yes, I have been talking in my sleep – tender endearments to Robbie and Gary apparently. But it’s all quite innocent. Honest.

A

llow me to explain. You see, I’m rather protective of my crops. I’ve known them from birth, watched them burst into life, named every one of them after my fave boy band singers, and proudly taken care of them as they’ve grown. So when evil beasties start to attack them I get rather stressed and can’t sleep for worrying.

Most pests I can deal with. Even that dodgy neighbour who always seems to get his lawn mower out just as I’ve donned bikini and lain out in the back garden. But slugs, well, I just hate them.

With their twitching tentacles and their munching mouths. Seems to me their sole purpose in life is to devour my and all other growers’ precious crops, usually after dark. So I’ve been sneaking out at night to stand guard over the kitchen garden and allotment to stop the slimy army in its tracks.

I’ve had great success out there under the stars in my pyjamas, crawling on my belly, beached-whale style, torch in one marigold-clad hand, sugar tongs in the other, searching for those telltale slime trails that lead me to the munching monsters, squealing with sheer joy each time I seized one with my tongs.

Unfortunately, Lord Muck isn’t buying my explanation. Even he doesn’t think I’m bonkers enough. Hence the adultery conclusion. So to prove my undying devotion to him, I’ve decided to find another way to deal with these pests so he doesn’t keep waking up to find the bed empty.

I’ve turned to one of nature’s wonder foods for a non-toxic solution: garlic.

Slugs have a vampire-like aversion to garlic, which is why hosta growers swear by it. Some people simply add a crushed clove of garlic to their watering can whenever they water, but I’ve started using a home-made garlic spray instead. All you have to do is crush one garlic bulb, add to a litre of water and boil for five minutes. Allow it to cool and then strain the liquid into a bottle and store in the fridge. Dilute the solution in one tablespoon per litre and spray your plants and surrounding soil, ideally in the early evening when slugs are at their most destructive. Just remember to repeat after rain. So far, it seems to be working a treat and my nocturnal escapades are no longer needed. Result.

GARDENSTYLE ParaDiSe reGaineD Q. I’m depressed. My garden consists of a boring rectangular patch of lawn and not much else. I can’t afford a complete makeover – any suggestions? a. Whenever I go to parties and people find out that I’m a garden designer, they invariably develop a dreamy look in their eyes and gaze rather longingly at me.

Unfortunately, I’ve long since learnt that it’s not my impressive cleavage that elicits this reaction, but rather the sudden realisation that I could be the answer to all their dreams - of a horticultural nature, you understand. Yes, they’re imagining their own sorry scrap of mud and lawn transformed into a veritable paradise - one where stone terraces lead through a wisteria-covered pergola to a beautiful summerhouse draped in honeysuckle and scented roses beside a trickling water rill etc – need I go on?

This dreaminess is usually swiftly followed by despondency when they assume that their bank balance will never run to such fantasies, and I watch them slope off to the kitchen for a consolatory Sauvignon top-up.

However, all is not lost, for only last year I transformed two gardens on relatively small budgets – and the secret? forget the hard landscaping and stick to plants.

You see, it’s the paths, terraces and summerhouses that cost the most, while the plants, although relatively inexpensive by comparison, can have the most beautifying effect. In fact, if I had to choose between Mr X’s expensive garden full of hard yellow paving and a plethora of ‘features’, or old Ms Y’s rambling oasis of lawn and ebullient herbaceous borders, it would be the softness of the latter every time.

now for the clever bit – and you’ll be amazed at how this breaks up the important view from the house. You must cut out a couple of flower-beds coming in at right angles from the side boundaries towards the centre of the lawn - stagger at least one each side. on no account cut out kidney-shaped island beds in the middle of your lawn – it will only look as if you’ve buried the family horse!

So how do you start? first you must create generous planting beds all around the boundary – nothing less than a metre wide – and then plant with three layers:

follow the same rules for planting, but this time add some see-through plants such as tall wands of purple verbena bonariensis, anchoring the corner of each bed with a full-stop in the form of a beautifully clipped box ball.

A tall back layer of shrubs, using at least 30% evergreens to hide the fence and give winter interest, a middle layer of medium shrubs and perennials, such as roses and tall blue phlox, and then a lower front planting of pretty perennials that will ramble about, such as Geranium ‘Rozanne’. All the time you’re aiming for contrast of leaf shape and colour, as well as making sure you have plants for every season.

All you need now is to invest in a tasteful bench (no plastic please) and you can sit back in your own patch of paradise, bank balance only slightly in tatters. anne Britt is a garden designer.

iss Helen Bickham, the youngest of seven, was a family-minded, animal-loving, witty and generous benefactor who died, aged 89, in 1948. Her support, whether proffered anonymously or otherwise, benefited Bowdon’s cricket club, its Bowls and Lawn Tennis club, its WW2 evacuees and countless others.

Demure, yet fun-loving, Helen, of the upswept braided hair and maxi-skirt, preferred victoriana to 20th century trappings. So Gorsefield, the grandiose mansion that her father Spencer Henry Bickham completed in 1861, remained gas-lit for a full century. Electricity and central heating were only introduced to the building when it was converted and renamed Bickham House.

During Helen’s ownership, most dairy produce on the 3-acre estate came courtesy of her well-nourished cow.

Interestingly, her wish that they, alongside her horse and many beloved cats, be painlessly destroyed on her demise was completely disobeyed!

Routine always ruled at Gorsefield. clocks were re-wound on Wednesdays. ovens were blacked and leaded on fridays and then, after lunch, Helen‘s full retinue of around 21 house, garden and kitchen staff lined up beneath the clock tower for uniform inspection and the weekly pay out.

Miss Bickham’s green Rolls-Royce was parked beneath the bell-tower archway. one tug of the bell-rope summoned the green liveried chauffeur. Two tugs brought the gardeners running. And for sleepovers, it was lady servants only.

Eccentric? Silk and cotton magnate Spencer Bickham had already acquired quasi-celebrity status by riding in his pony and trap, not only to his wedding to Henrietta at Manchester cathedral in 1838, but also travelling in that fashion every day at 7 am prompt to his Manchester and Macclesfield offices and mills.

And today? cross the imposing portals, check out the family crest and coat of arms, and let the safety and warmth of Bickham House’s high-vaulted oak-beamed rooms envelop you.

A LiTTLE SLicE of iTALy in KnuTSford Why have i never been to Knutsford before? This is what i was asking myself after going to review Piccolino in Knutsford for this issue. What a stunning place, with its beautiful shops and restaurants right on the edge of glorious Tatton Park. Strolling along King Street made me wish it was christmas and that i could afford to live here.

i love italian food and could eat it every day of the week, so stepping into this white wood, stylish restaurant with all the sights and smells of an italian Mama’s kitchen had me excited. it was an overcast day but we were led through the main restaurant area and onto the covered outdoor terrace overlooking nothing but trees and greenery. There was a dJ playing gentle beats and outdoor patio heaters made it really rather toasty. it must have been mum and daughter day because there were so many of them enjoying leisurely lunches together.

We were seated and served with fresh, warm ciabatta bread and some olives, which is how every italian meal should begin in my book. To start, we decided to share a couple of light appetisers, the bruschetta al pomodoro and insalata tricolore. These are the flavours of italy.

Tomatoes so rich in colour and flavour all they needed was a touch of olive oil and a dash of seasoning. This is my kind of food. The tricolore was also fresh, zingy and plentiful for a small plate, a divine start to lunch.

My main course was roasted salmon on a bed of peas, pancetta, ditalini pasta & herbs. The base was quite soupy and rich. it was a fresh and tasty dish i didn’t tire of eating. not too heavy on the pancetta, too, which could have made it too greasy and hidden the salmon.

My lunch pal went for the asparagus and ricotta ravioli with butter and Parmesan.

She’s not a fussy eater, this lunch pal of mine, but sadly we had to return this dish as it was just too buttery. A fresh plate came back very quickly and the delicate flavours of the asparagus were back with a lot less butter to mask it.

There was nothing left, which is always a good sign.

dessert was a crêpe suzette for me that came with all the theatre and flame you would expect and a simple, but delicious, almond tart for my very lucky plus one.

All rounded off with a strong and creamy espresso. This was a good lunch that my mum would have loved. now, what’s the average house price for a three-bed semi in Knutsford?

TABLE foR TWo… ...with kate Leach at The Hale Grill

If love and marriage do, as the great lyricist Sammy cahn insisted, go together like a horse and carriage, then south Manchester and the rude health of its property market could equally be hitched to his memorable equine simile. our estate agents are well known and, most remarkably, also generally well respected and even liked, which is not the case elsewhere. My guest, kate Leach, has been at the epicentre of this puzzling, but pleasing, local phenomenon for many years now and I was keen to get some expert insight over a leisurely lunch at The Hale Grill.

rian and Ellie welcomed us into the restaurant’s comforting blend of exposed timber-and-brickwork and warmly plush leather upholstery, which provided the perfect backdrop for kate’s bricks and mortar history. A smoked duck salad and salt-and-pepper calamari saw us go back to the future as we explored kate’s enduring Didsbury roots.

Born in Albert Hill Street, Didsbury, in what is now Giddy Goat Toys but was then Leach’s Lawnmowers, kate seemed destined for a career in property development and management. Her father, Jeffrey, a veteran of the north Atlantic convoys in the Second World War and a now sprightly 93, took advantage of the early 70s property doldrums and, with the assistance of government funded grants, bought and renovated a whole row of near derelict terraces in Didsbury. kate lived in one of these as she passed through her schooling years and, as the youngest of three children, she quite evidently watched and learned all about the local property market.

Steak is the Grill’s speciality so we plumped for the succulent lunch time steak frites as kate described the next

chapter in her life. After completing her ‘o’ Levels, a trip to London saw her being talent spotted by a model agency scout at Top Shop, à la the other kate, and so a budding career in modelling was launched. kate’s mother duly enrolled her on a summer course at the famed Lucie clayton Academy but insisted that her young daughter remained based in Manchester. She still managed to have a fairly successful career with top London agencies such as nevs and some of her career highlights included being photographed by star photographers Mario Testino and John Swannell. kate modelled into her early twenties but a return to Albert Hill Street, this time in her own house, saw her finally pick up the reins of a career that would bring her up to the present day. Starting as a negotiator with Wren Properties in the mid-80s, she’s since managed to work for most of the Didsbury agencies in one capacity or another. Along the way she began re-investing her earnings into her own property portfolio, eventually reaching the point when her own company’s commitments, and those of her father’s property investment concerns, superseded her work for other agencies. kate’s

independence and shrewd entrepreneurial flair, plus her solid work ethic, saw her spend many a night doing her sums, whilst her friends were out partying in the madly excessive 80s.

A refreshing champagne sorbet eased us into the ‘exchange and completion’ of kate’s story. Her diligence and attention to detail, not to mention her honest values and intelligence have taken her a long way in this most competitive of arenas as she continues to successfully grow her business. oh, and she may well have stayed in some nights with the books in 1984, but I’ll bet that when she didn’t, she looked good on the dance floor...!

ZoUk Two entrepreneurial brothers own Manchester’s Zouk restaurant and they have a passion for food, travel, kitchen theatre and atmosphere. Here’s how Tayub and Mudassar bring this passion to their restaurant every day.

Tayub, Tell me a little bit about Zouk, the concept behind it and when it began?

My brother and I grew up with the restaurant business as our father had restaurants, takeaways and catering businesses. After school we decided to pursue corporate careers but it wasn’t long before we realised life behind a desk wasn’t for us. We decided to set up on our own and were very clear that we were going to have a restaurant we’d like to spend time in ourselves. We wanted great food, atmosphere and authentic Indian cuisine. You won’t find any typical anglicised dishes on our menu.

You’ve been in Manchester since 2009, why did you choose to open in Manchester after Bradford?

We both studied in Manchester and love the city. It’s also renowned for curries so, after Bradford, it seemed like the right place. We looked for a while before we found the site and, even though it wasn’t in the best location, it just felt right so we took the plunge.

Describe why the menu is different to other restaurants of this kind We haven’t restricted ourselves to one region, which many Indian restaurants do. We have a menu that ranges from Goan fish curry to a Lahori classic such as magaz – sheep’s brains or lamb nihari, which is a signature dish of ours.

How would you describe the atmosphere?

It’s buzzing and lively, not always the kind of venue for a quiet date, although we have had a surprising number of proposals over the years! We try to give it a holiday feel so it’s a place to relax, take time out and enjoy some delicious food with friends. our kitchen is theatre-style because we want our customers to enjoy seeing the chefs at work.

Who is your typical customer? our customers generally come to Zouk for the whole experience, not just for a quick bite to eat, but to enjoy tasty, fresh Indian food in a vibrant atmosphere. We have a really mixed customer base, as Manchester is a multicultural city and everyone loves a curry!

What is your most popular dish on the menu?

Butter chicken is the dish that chicken tikka masala evolved from and is made in a similar way, starting with chargrilled pieces of chicken tikka, so we encourage customers to give it a try. our lamb nihari is pretty famous now. It takes over 6 hours to cook and the meat is so tender it just falls apart – delicious!

What plans do you have for Zouk in the future?

We’re very focused on our Manchester restaurant and have just invested £200,000 renovating our terrace so that it’s now a state-of-the art outdoor dining space. We’d like to look at expanding the brand with a move to London and possibly beyond, but for now we’re keeping busy with Manchester, Bradford and our sister brand kukoos, which is an Indian, Lebanese and Moroccan street food shop on oxford Road.

a neW rOOT FOr HUnTaPaC Huntapac Produce Limited was formed in 1942 and since its inception has become one of the largest producers and suppliers of carrots and parsnips in the Uk. In the past two years the firm has expanded its product line by developing a new brand of vegetable crisps, and 12 months ago marked its diversification by partnering with the well-established supermarket, Booths.

Rachel Alty, Account Manager at Huntapac, has been instrumental in the placement of Roots crisps in Booths’ 31 stores across north west England. We caught up with 30-year-old Rachel to find out more about the Roots brand:

Although Booths have been a customer of Huntapac on the fresh vegetables side for many years, the process of introducing a new product was still like that of a new supplier.”

Before adding more products to the Roots brand, Rachel hopes to develop a 150-gram sharer bag, as at the moment Roots are only available in 50-gram individual packs.

The thinking behind supplying small packs appealed to Booths’ lunchtime customers, and evidently has been a big success.

The firm also supply Roots crisps to Booker cash & carry, as well as other food and wholesale distributors servicing the food sector.

Rachel and the team at Huntapac are keen to develop the relationship with Booths in the crisps and snacks category, interacting directly with Booths’ customers to gain feedback about the products in a bid to expand and improve the crisps.

Rachel added: “We work closely with Booths and their customers to gain a better understanding of what they want; it’s a really exciting time knowing that we are working together to continually grow the Roots brand together.”

A project that began as a sideline for Rachel has bloomed into a major part of her daily routine and it is clear she is proud of her personal achievements, as well as Huntapac’s success in a new sector of the food industry.

The quality brand is approaching its second anniversary, having doubled turnover each year since its creation.

With an ambitious account manager in charge of their future, it seems Roots are set to continue to excel in the food market. So watch this space!

MoneyMatters Times are Changing

Manchester based Wealth Management expert Kath Wilkinson gives us the low down on Auto-Enrolment.

So what’s changed?

One of the biggest changes in pension funding has been introduced by the government.

This is called auto-enrolment and it started in October 2012. By April 2017 every employer will have to offer access to a pension arrangement to every employee aged between 22 and State Pension Age and earning over the ‘earnings trigger’ (£192 if employees are paid weekly, £833 if employees are paid monthly and £10,000 if employees are paid annually for 2015/16).

Your duty as an employer: As an employer, you will ultimately be required to contribute a minimum of 3% of qualifying earnings (between £5,824 and £42,385) and your employee will have to contribute 4%, which, together with tax relief of 1%, makes a total of 8%. These amounts are being phased in over a five year period.

It is important to understand your obligations and duties as an employer to avoid being fined or charged penalties.

If you have an existing pension scheme it may be that this can be used to meet your obligations. If it doesn’t or you do not have a scheme, then you will need to decide how best to meet the auto-enrolment requirements.

Why you should speak to a Financial Adviser about Pensions and AutoEnrolment: There is now a greater responsibility to make the right decisions to create the fund you need, to take benefits in the most appropriate way and enjoy the retirement you hope for.

During the summer holidays people have spent more time with their partners and sometimes they have seen the holidays as an escape, perhaps a time to try and work things out. Although there is no such thing as a “good” divorce when children are involved, children mostly hide their true feelings from their parents. Many children also conclude that it meant that their mother and father did not love them, and some children speak of having to “look after” a parent. A lot of children have also claimed that one of their parents try to turn them against the other. e most important thing is to be honest with your children, acknowledge their feelings and, above all, give them the support and security they need.

Ok, that’s a bit of a lie as clearly people want rewarding for what they do, but money is not the key way to engage people. Don’t underestimate the fact that people coming to work in small businesses are acutely aware of the salary differences between working there versus working for a goliath. As long as your salary policy is fair, in-line with the market, and rewards people for their contribution, you are doing well.

Make people feel part of your journey:

A big lesson here for business owners is not to be greedy. I’ve seen too many examples of businesses led by an owner (who does very well) and has a lot of low paid under-incentivised staff. Your business is nothing without your team so look after them!

It’s critical that your team don’t just feel like they’re there to do a job; you have to make sure people feel engaged in the journey of you (as a business owner) and the business itself. Make sure you fill them in on the background and ambition of you and the company, give regular updates and communication and, importantly, make sure that you give your team the chance to contribute to the future decision making and strategy of your company. People need to feel some emotional ownership of the company, its direction and their influence on it.

Do stuff together: For many companies, team-building simply means going out and getting drunk together. This frankly is a bit of a lazy option. You need to make sure you engage with the team and engage your team with each other.

There’s a lot to be said for team-building, but also for regular soft engagement; have lunch together, go to the cinema or to the theatre do as many things as time and money will allow. Your company is a community, and without company cohesion it isn’t going to work.

Find out what people want out of life: It may seem somewhat selfexplanatory, but it’s critical to find out what people’s real motivations are in life. What makes them get up in the morning? What are their hobbies and interests? What do they want out of life? The more you know about your team, the more you can help build and support their ambitions. I remember once, one of my team had a real passion for photography perhaps the best thing I ever did for them was to send them on a photography course, allowing them to get qualified in something they loved. They’ve been with me for over 10 years...Feed your people’s passions!

How can cohabiting couples protect their rights?

Cohabitees are the fastest growing family type in the UK, but in England and Wales they have little or no automatic legal protection if they separate.

There is no such thing as a common law marriage in this country. So, if you are about to start living with someone you should think about a cohabitation agreement that clarifies everyone’s rights in the event of a break up.

What is the legal status of a prenuptial agreement?

The use of prenuptial agreements is on the rise and, whilst they are not binding in the event of divorce, the court will take them into consideration providing that the parties have had legal advice and exchanged financial disclosure before signing the agreement; there was no duress and that it was the intention that agreement be binding and the marriage would have gone ahead anyway.

How do you dissolve a civil partnership?

You can apply to the court for the partnership to be dissolved and will receive the same entitlements as a divorcing spouse applying to the court for financial provision. The person must have been in a civil partnership for at least one year in order to apply for a dissolution. The process for dissolution of civil partnership mirrors that of divorce although different terminology is used.

EDUCATION NEWS INFANT PUPIL CROWNED COUNTY CHESS CHAMPION Cheadle Hulme School Infant pupil, Ethan Gardiner has been crowned Cheshire and North Wales Chess Champion, winning the title of Supremo at the Delancy UK Schools Chess Challenge Megafinal.

Ethan, who first learnt to play at the age of two, represents the Cheshire Under 9s and Under 11s and will now take on the best players from schools across the North at the Gigafinal, in July.

Six year-old Ethan achieved his victory in the Under 7s category of the regional final, which was hosted by Cheadle Hulme School in June, gaining a clean sheet to win the most points on the day.

FUNDRAISING MILESTONE FOR MANCHESTER HIGH The Manchester High School for Girls’ community was in a celebratory mood as fundraising for the Pankhurst Bursary Appeal has now topped the £1.5 million mark.

Over 250 people gathered at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate Hotel for the school’s annual Bursary Ball, which raised an additional £27,000 for the appeal. The Pankhurst Bursary Appeal exists to enable bright girls across the region to benefit from all that Manchester High has to offer, regardless of their families’ ability to afford school fees. Five years on since the appeal’s launch, 73 girls have passed through the school having received financial assistance from the fund.

Head Mistress, Mrs Claire Hewitt, said: “Every year we are faced with girls that have the ability to secure a Manchester High place but who simply lack the financial means.The Pankhurst Bursary Appeal is vital in helping keep our doors open to these girls. Having progressed from science teacher to deputy, and from acting to permanent head teacher last May, meet this former boys’ prep school’s first headmistress since it was founded above Alderley’s main street pharmacy in 1877.

Claire says: “I’d vowed never to be a teacher like my mum, but once in class, I was hooked. Teaching’s a vocation fulfilling my need to be needed and reveals the wish of every teacher to be secret actor. Being a mother, I’m more understanding. I identify with parents, offering solutions I’d never otherwise have found.”

So why teach juniors?

I’ve experience with youngsters from 3 to 18 years old but remain riveted by the 7 to 11 age group.They’re independent, keen to learn, not panicky about exams, and are still amazed by science, the digestion system, insects, spiders and experiments.

How has it been since you were appointed head?

The transition was pretty seamless, providing continuity and not disruption for children, parents and staff. Most ‘Old boy’ mind sets changed when we welcomed girls in 2009. Now, unlike when I arrived, two-thirds of our 40-strong team are women. They are

organised, efficient and just right for their jobs.

What would you say were your ‘pet hates’?

Dishonesty, laziness, gossip and insincerity.

Have you had to make any huge changes since being head?

As deputy head, I saw what was required. The demand for common entrance at 13 had dwindled, so we scaled down to an all-round 11-plus prep. We’d lost out to local nurseries, so for working parents, we brought admission down from three to two years and are full! We extended afterschool care and activities till 6 pm and introduced new bursary schemes.

What are your ‘likes’?

Sincerity, application, problem-solving by discussion, staff who are natural - and steak and cheese!

What would you say makes The Ryleys stand out in terms of education?

We employ specialists to help pupils reach their chosen secondary schools from MGS, Withington, Cheadle Hulme, Kings and Stockport Grammar to mainstream comprehensives. Here, art is taught by artists, maths by maths graduates and year 3 science by me – I couldn’t face losing touch!

What do you believe is the most important element in teaching young children?

Focusing on reality, encouraging and directing children towards the right decisions, and avoiding giving false hopes, false praise or feeding negativity. Learning is more than retaining facts; it is also about building memories and relationships.

And praising staff is vital too - we’re all kids at heart.

What are your professional aims?

For our pupils to leave here confident, tolerant, understanding our differences and happy in their own skin.

Any funny stories you could share?

I’ve been called ‘dad’, accused of turning up in my pyjamas, asked what I actually do all day long, and assured by my girls, ‘Mum, you’re the best head, but please don’t ever grow up!

The third album from the Aussie psych rockers sees them take a turn towards the dance floor with a set of tunes that have more in common with Daft Punk than The Doors. Lead-man Kevin Parker was apparently put out by never hearing his music in a club, so resolved to do something about it. Don’t fear though - there’s still plenty of woozy psychedelia to be had here.

Jason Williamson of the band explains that ‘Key Markets’ was the name of a large supermarket in Grantham from the early 1970s up until around 1980. Taking this everyday, town-centre mundanity as their starting point, the Mods craft a suite of edgy riot-pop songs that touch on, among other things, ‘the pointlessness of government politics’.

GREAT ESTATE I’ve often written enthusiastically in the past about bonkers estate cars. As a cyclist and dog-owner, I always liked the idea of a car that allowed you to take all the important things in life with you without compromising the fun of performance motoring.Two-seater sports cars are all well and good, but for most of us they’re not much use day to day.

Most of the big manufacturers know this. For example, the arms race between Audi’s RS estates and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG-fettled models has always been intense. Anything above 500bhp and price tags nudging a hundred grand no longer even raise an eyebrow.

Meanwhile, one of the universally acknowledged benchmarks for fast cars – the timed lap of the world-famous Nürburgring racetrack – has been stolen by a far less glamorous competitor.

The new record for the fastest estate car to lap the fearsome course has been taken by Seat, with its Leon ST CUPRA 280.

For a car generally considered to be an affordable alternative to the VW Golf on which it is based, this is a serious coup.

For under £30,000, here is an estate car capable not only of carrying five adults plus luggage, but also terrifying them while it’s at it.

TINY DEVIL While on a recent trip to a dealership specialising in all things Italian, I was eyeing some serious exotica from the likes of Alfa Romeo and Maserati when I was rudely interrupted by a throaty exhaust note whose volume and reverberation suggested that something monstrous was approaching.

The big surprise, however, was that all this sound and fury was in fact emanating from the tiniest car of the lot: a Fiat 500. Somehow this was even more exciting than if a Ferrari had rumbled across our path. How could something so small sound like the devil himself?

This was no ordinary 500. Unlike its fun and fashionable supermini relatives, this Abarth 595 Competizione version is an altogether more macho proposition, now available with all the racetrack-inspired trimmings you can imagine. Best of all, there’s been a power upgrade: it’s been boosted to 180bhp, which nearly puts the engine into hot-hatch territory, but in a car not much bigger than a go kart.

That thunderous exhaust system is perhaps the biggest selling point though.You’ll hear it before you see it. I haven’t even had a test drive yet, but I can tell you that of all the cars I saw that day, this is the one I’m itching to get my hands on.
