Editor’s letter We’re so pleased to be back and bringing you a brand-new issue packed full of features, news, reviews and competitions. Over the past 18 months, many of us have spent most of our time at home, travelled less widely, seen a lot less of our friends and spent lots of money improving our homes and on internet shopping. It’s not surprising that we are craving new things. Lockdown wasn’t all bad; it gave us time to take stock of what is or isn’t important – like being able to spend additional time with our families. I had a lot to think about over lockdown and had some very important decisions to make. You can read my pandemic story on page 9. Also in this issue: we catch up with Susie Batista of Cheshire Property Staging to discuss how she helps to turn new-build homes into the most Instagramable and salable; Steph and Ian, parents of Joel Danziger, update us on their son’s treatment; and we speak to Buda Dangol about family business, The Great Kathmandu. You’ll also find tucked inside our reviews of The Spa at Turnberry, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and Dakota Manchester. And there’s a Virgin Red competition on page 3, so make sure you enter. The nights are drawing in and it’s beginning to get colder, so cosy up, grab yourself a warm drink and enjoy our latest issue... But before I leave you to read on, some news!

An uncertain future On 14th January 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and, in October 2008, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wrote this article for Issue 58 of Didsbury Magazine

Then, almost 12 years later, in November 2019, I found out that I carry the BRCA2 gene. And if you can remember (I’m sure you can), the pandemic hit and everything shut down. So, an uncertain future was me in 2008. Fast forward to 2021 and it’s all about what I went through during the pandemic and where I’m up to now. Everyone has a pandemic story and this is mine… 14th January 2008 is a day I’ll remember and said: “I told you I thought it was… for as long as I live. As long as I live… I’m sorry.” We just sat there looking at each other, and then I cried and cried. Just before Christmas, I noticed a lump in my breast, so I kept feeling it in the The doctor wanted to do another test, hope that it would disappear. On Boxing because they had seen something under Day, it was still there, so the next day, my arm, so would I mind? At this point, I made an appointment to see my GP. I was numb. The doctor told me it would He saw me immediately and told me probably bruise. “Bruise!” I remember he would refer me to The Nightingale saying, “I think that’s the least of my Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, even problems.” I felt very rude, but I couldn’t before he’d examined me. The next day, help it. My mum rang while I was I received an appointment for the waiting to have this test and I blurted out following Monday, New Year’s Eve. “It’s not good news.” She was obviously upset and I felt bad telling her while she I’d had a benign lump removed about was alone, but I couldn’t hide my shaky 15 years ago, so I wasn’t too concerned voice. By the time we got home, one of about the appointment. At The my sons, my mum and my sister were Nightingale Centre, they gave me a waiting for us. get to the point, and the doctor did. “Okay, are you listening?” was his opening. “You have a malignant tumour that has to be removed and we will also need to take some lymph nodes from under your arm.” He went on to say that breast cancer is graded from 1-3, grade 3 being the worst – and I was grade 3. He said they would admit me the day before surgery and inject dye into my breast so that it would show up when they opened me up. They would take out the number of lymph nodes they needed to, send them to pathology and while they were waiting for the results, they would remove the breast lump. He told me that I was lucky having the procedure done in this way and I remember saying that I really didn’t feel very lucky. He opened his diary and asked me when I was free or if I had anything planned. “Not anymore,” I remember saying. Funny how you remember everything so vividly – every single word. I went into hospital on 29th January, and I was scared. My body was shaking and I couldn’t control it. The dye injection was simple, quick and didn’t hurt. Afterwards, I was free to leave the hospital, but I needed to return a few hours later for a scan to make sure it had worked. We decided to go to Pizza Express for some strange reason. Why, I don’t know, because neither Salim nor I could possibly eat anything. >> October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Beverley & Salim Uddin-Khandakar, Salutions Annual Charity Ball 2008

Once on the ward, a student nurse put me at ease by sitting and talking to me. I told her I was scared and asked if I could have sleeping tablets in the evening and a pre-med before my operation, so she made sure this was on my notes. I had a great night’s sleep and woke at 6.30am, just in time for a cup of tea. Surgery was scheduled for 10.30am, so I had my pre-med at 9am, just before Salim arrived. My surgeon visited me once I was on the trolley and explained that if I wake with drains in my arms, it would mean they had done a full clearance of the lymph nodes. But before I knew it, I was being told by a breast nurse that they only took three and they were all clear. Woo-hoo! That was the first good news I’d heard for a while. Now, I could go back to sleep. Our children How do you tell your children that you have breast cancer? I told Andrew and Antony, my 21 and 18-year-old sons. That was hard, because they were still my babies, however old they were. They’d see me when I came back from my treatment, pale, tired, sickly, and I don’t know how they dealt with it; maybe I should have asked them. As for our younger children, Safi, Zara and Loulou (aged nine, seven and five respectively), we didn’t tell them. We decided we would stick to drip-feeding on a need-to-know basis. At breakfast, the day before my op, Salim told the children that mummy had to go into hospital to have a lump removed and that I could be there for two to five days, so he needed them to help him while I was away. They asked a couple of questions like “Will you come back?” and “Will you die?”. We tried to be very casual about the whole thing, although we were crying inside, but they just carried on playing. That was a weight off our minds.

By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar

I came out after two nights and at first, they were a bit clingy, but all in all, nothing changed and we carried on as normal. The next chat with them was before I started my chemotherapy. Again, at breakfast, Salim told them that I had to go back to hospital for some injections and that it could make me tired and sickly. Once they knew I wasn’t staying in, they were happy and carried on.

This is me, 2021… I wrote in my 2008 article that I hoped I could “get through the following few years without any further problems.” And I did, as far as breast cancer was concerned Then in 2018, we carried an advert for the BRCA2 gene, which made me think about my family history. I have two cousins on my mum’s side that were diagnosed with breast cancer after me and we were all a similar age. So, I contacted Everything Genetic and said I’d like to do the test. The BRCA testing service includes mandatory pre-test counselling and post-test counselling by one of their UK consultant genetic specialists. I had my pre-test counselling and the test was sent out to me. On 28th November 2019, I received a call to say my test was positive. I immediately thought I was going to die, but by the evening, I’d managed to calm down and remember that I hadn’t just been diagnosed with cancer, I had been informed that there’s a risk I could get breast cancer again, or melanoma, pancreatic and ovarian cancer. A few days later, I had my post-test genetics counselling and decided to go ahead with preventative surgery – a double mastectomy and reconstruction as well as ovary and fallopian tube removal. Jill Creative Director How long have you been hairdressing? I have been hairdressing for 15 years – since I left school. What attracted you to FIXX Salons? I moved to the area two years ago from Manchester, I had been looking for a salon somewhere closer to home but just hadn't found 'the one'. During lockdown, I had peeped through the window at FIXX and fell in love with the quirky neon lights and the light, airy space, so i decided to have a look on its website. I read through the team’s bios and discovered that a lot of the staff had been trained at salons like Sassoon and HOB, so I knew they had been through a similar training process as I had at Trevor Sorbie. It had to be equally as professional as what I was used to and I was excited to work alongside people who would inspire me. What is your greatest career achievement so far? Completing my Trevor Sorbie vardering course – it was tough, but it was somewhere I had always wanted to work. What is your forte? My favourite is perfectly blended balayage techniques and highlights. I’m very patient and I admire great attention to detail. What hair trends are coming for this winter? Feathered bangs and natural, warm, earthy tones – it’s the perfect time to try a fringe as the cooler weather stops your hair from frizzing! What is your best hair tip? For long locks, before you go to bed, twist your hair into a low bun, leaving the ends out and tie with a scrunchie. I do this every night and it stops my hair from becoming tangled and it gives me a natural wave without using heat! Magic.

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

The boutique, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is situated on bustling Oxford Road, with Manchester’s huge array of shops within easy walking distance. The Manchester Arena is a 20-minute walk, while Old Trafford Stadium is a 10 minutes’ drive. Manchester Airport can be reached in 20 minutes’ drive. “Housed in a magnificent terracotta Grade II-listed building, Kimpton Clocktower has a history that dates back to 1890, when the building first opened as The Refuge Assurance Company headquarters. Today, it’s a destination where glamour and luxury meet one-ofa-kind craftsmanship – and where there are new things to discover at every turn”

The building originally accommodated 900 clerks, but ten years later, the Refuge purchased the land adjoining their building, and staff numbers grew to 1300. The Grand Room was used as the staff canteen, and hotel staff say that when the hotel is quiet, you can almost sense the hustle and bustle from the early days. The Directors Suite still has ‘Refuge’ proudly emblazoned above the marble fireplace. This room and the two on either side of it, have always been used by the Directors of the Refuge Assurance Company.

There are reminders of Refuge throughout the building, and memorabilia ranges from the actual vaults and safes, to stained glass windows which feature The Refuge Assurance Company a symbol representing every town that This beautiful building was built in 1895 the company has dealt with. ’R.A.Co’ by Alfred Waterhouse and for many can be found on top of the pillars in the years, was known as the Refuge Assurance hotel reception and in many fireplaces Building. The hotel era In 1988, The Refuge Assurance Company re-located to Wilmslow, and in 1989 the building started to operate as The Charterhouse Hotel. The era of this great building operating as a hotel had now begun. In 1996, the hotel was renamed The Palace Hotel. The operators realised the potential of the building next door and bought it. They now had space for extra bedrooms, and a modern business centre provided modern technology that would attract business clientele to the hotel. During the restoration of the courtyard, a magnificent marble floor was placed in the centre, underneath the glass dome. This would become the centrepiece of the reception area, complimented by an extravagant chandelier that hung from the centre of the glass dome. Following a multi-million-pound renovation in 2016, the hotel was renamed The Principal Manchester. The Grand Room became The Ballroom. Previously 30

new en-suite bedrooms were added, increasing the total number of bedrooms to 171, but an extensive refurbishment programme by Principal, further increased the number of bedrooms to 270. The Bar and Dining Room was named ‘The Refuge’ with its much-photographed The Glamour of Manchester mural on the tiled wall. Within the lobby area, a 1300lb bronze horse sculpture by the granddaughter of renowned author Charles Dickens – Sophie Dickens, was installed, to show where the original turning circle for horse and carts was. The 10,000 square foot ground floor dining area and bar was enhanced with a glass roofed Winter Garden, where fairy lights are wrapped around trees, and a metal caged bar now gives this Edwardian architectural feature a modern twist, whilst still retaining its grand industrial roots.

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel In 2019, IHG acquired the property and Kimpton Clocktower Hotel opened in October 2020. With ornate original features, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel combines classic good looks with a cool streak, and despite its large, grand public areas, it is warm and welcoming. The Refuge curated by the awardwinning team from Volta, in nearby Didsbury, is a glam-meets-industrial destination restaurant that brings local workers, city residents, visitors, business travellers, and everyone in-between. The menu is eclectic, with small dishes and sharing platters. The leafy heart of Kimpton Clocktower Hotel’s distinctive dining space is The Winter Garden. Settle yourself into a comfy chair and browse the selection of gins. Afternoon Tea is served Tuesday to Thursday with a spin on the classic format, which includes a punchy pork and kimchi sausage roll, followed by date and cherry scones and a host of sweet treats.

Furnished with elegant decor, all of the luxury rooms include TVs with satellite channels, private bathrooms and in-room safes. Guests can also make use of hairdryers and tea/coffee-making facilities. No two of the recently refurbished rooms and suites are quite the same and some have original features such as panelled walls or glazed tiled pillars. All 270 rooms are spacious with a neutral colour scheme of cool greys, creams and white, with pops of colour. Fast free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel and the ballroom is the biggest hotel event space in the north of England. All in all, a very pleasant stay and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. A definite recommendation, and with rooms starting at only £120, what’s not to like.

Changing rooms with Cheshire Property Staging We catch up with Susie Batista of Cheshire Property Staging to discuss her smart new move into the property development market; helping turn new-build residences into the most Instagramable (and salable) in the region We first met Susie back in 2019. Her business (then called Cheshire Home Staging), though still in its infancy, was booming. Working more or less solo and fizzing with positivity, she busily transformed private properties into must-buy homes by weaving a special kind of house-dressing magic. Houses that had lingered on the market for far too long sold overnight. Clients called her work “life-changing.” Meet the team Today, we meet Susie inside her bright and light new office. There’s been a shift in direction since we last spoke. It’s brand-new residential developments, such as luxury apartments, in Cheshire and the North West upon which Susie will now be wielding her Midas touch. And this time, she’s not alone. Instead, she’s got two amazing women working by her side; both share her burning passion for interiors and ability to storm through to-do lists. There’s Katie,

30

October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Junior Interior Designer and Stager (“my phenomenal wingwoman”) and Madelyn, Senior Interior Designer and Stager (“she’s worked with so many top designers in LA”). “I’m not sure what I ever did without them!” beams Susie. A new shade of business Early lockdown put many projects on hold, but once the Government gave estate agents the green light to open again, Susie was back in business – and people who’d spent 24/7 within the same

four walls now wanted to revamp their space and Cheshire Property Staging’s interior design requests rocketed. It’s this aspect of the business and a shift into new properties that the team is now focusing on: “We loved (and still love staging) homes,” says Susie, “but the main focus now is putting our stamp on the property development arena and working on high-end show homes.

“There are some incredible developments happening locally and Cheshire Property Staging wants to work alongside developers from day one.” Whilst staging is an increasingly popular aspect of development projects, Susie explains that many developers are not yet convinced of its power: "It’s a key way of standing out from the competition; the ability to capture highly instagramable images of the properties for sale, beautifully staged, is a sure-fire way to maximise investment.” Supporting developers “By being part of the development team from the beginning,” says Susie, “we can not only advise on all aspects of interior design, we will give direction on fixtures and fittings too. We can help with everything from where the light switches should be located to wall and carpet colour. Attention to detail is so important and that’s what we offer.” Part of that detail is creating looks that ‘talk’ directly to the target buyer; no one-look-attracts-all designs here: “We know exactly what’s on-trend when it comes to colours and materials and, more importantly, what will attract a specific buyer. As soon as we see a property, we envisage the ideal occupant and decorate and stage accordingly.

Every single room we create is bespoke.” Regardless of who the target buyer is, the Cheshire Property Staging signature look is always guaranteed to be elegant, classical and high-end. The result? Simple – the developer can up the asking price and have no problem getting it. “I'm confident,” smiles Susie, “that as soon as that individual, couple or family walks through the door, they’ll pay the price and not even question it. “People still think that location and square footage are the only things that put value on a property. They’re not, it’s about how it looks. Two identical houses next door to each other – one sells for £30,000 more, why? Because of how it’s presented on the inside. It makes an incredible difference.” Even better, as with her home staging work, clients can purchase any of the moveable dressings, such as furniture. “The developer can even include it as part of the deal,” adds Susie. As seen on TV Not only is the business’s expertise in demand on the ground, now the dizzy heights of TV stardom are calling too!

Cheshire Property Staging was contacted by a contestant on Channel 4 and S4C’s The Great House Giveaway to act as his interior design consultants and stagers. The premise of the show is that the contestants are given a budget to do up a property in need of work and if they make a profit on the sale, they get to keep it (or catch the property bug and reinvest). Susie smiles: “We loved it! And we felt so comfortable. Me and Katie have always thought that we’d like to end up on TV, presenting something about homes, so it was just perfect.” The programme will air later in the year. Room for more business With a new website showcasing its successes just launched, the dream team of Susie, Katie and Madelyn is keen to expand even further and looking to establish new relationships with developers in the area. “We’d love to connect with them,” says Susie. “We want to become part of their team. We’re good listeners! We’ll take on board their goals and achieve them. Working by their side, we’ll help them maximise profit and build a brand-new (and amazing looking) portfolio; creating rooms that no prospective buyer can resist.”

Montrose Properties – 40 years’ of letting excellence We catch up with Jen Wildblood and Ruth Pointon from Montrose Properties in the heart of West Didsbury to discuss the business’s early beginnings and changing perceptions of letting and landlords Montrose Properties first opened its doors in 1981 on the corner of Clyde Road and Lapwing Lane. The name came from the location of the business’s first property, a bedsit, on nearby Montrose Avenue. Jen joined the company in 1988 and Rob, her now husband, in 1990. A few years later, the business went up for sale and Jen and Rob bought it. Fast forward to 2021 and not only is the business thriving, it navigated the pandemic with a swift in-house digital response that left chains and nationals standing. But then again, Montrose isn’t your typical letting agency. It may be small, but it is powerful. The team acts like a family, but it means business. A nononsense but friendly approach devoted to lettings and property management, with no sales, gives them the expertise and ability to change quickly to market dynamics. At the heart of the community Whilst West Didsbury is the home of Montrose and it’s where its heart is (looking after over 500 properties and 1,500 residents in the area), it too covers vast areas of the North West and further afield. When the business first opened, the local area was an entirely different 34

they can all be managed and cared for by Montrose. “Whether a landlord wants to be totally hands-on or have limited involvement,” says Ruth, “Montrose will tailor the service and communication level to their needs, ensuring that we work together to conduct a compliant and mutually beneficial tenancy for all parties.” Giving back Everything we chat about during our meet-up with Montrose comes back to community. For its recent 40th birthday celebrations at Didsbury Cricket Club (the business is its main sponsor), Montrose invited local independent businesses to set up stalls for the day. The award-winning Kathmandu restaurant – near neighbours on Burton Road and itself approaching its fourth decade in business – provided the food. All funds raised went to the Alzheimer's Society and Francis House Children's Hospice as national and local charities close to many of their hearts. "It’s the virtuous circle,” smiles Ruth. “If we don’t invest time in supporting other local businesses and supporting people locally, the area is going to change and people won’t want to live here. It’s important that Montrose continues to invest in the area to ensure that local businesses, like us, succeed for another 40 years.” Montrose Properties 40th birthday event has so far raised over £4500.

The Great Kathmandu Food, family and friendship 35 years on, the Dangol family’s Great Kathmandu restaurant still scores gold for Nepalese food, service, intimacy and warmth Yes, West Didsbury’s famed curry house and its ever-expanding menu gain an all-round thumbs up from local gourmets and UK ex-pats alike. Obviously, the Dangols put food first. But there’s more to longevity than meets the eye. This family’s unpretentious personal touch, its ability to form lasting friendships with customers of all backgrounds, are rare qualities and major factors in The Great Kathmandu’s success. The Dangols Established by Gopal and Jhunu Miaya Dangol in October 1986, The Great Kathmandu has, since 2008, been managed by of two of their six children – business info technology graduate and Managing Director Buda, 41, and Manageress Asha. When their dynamic mum, Jhunu (Gopal’s operations person and ‘righthand man’), developed Alzheimer's, Gopal became her carer but kept his eye on the business too. In April 2020, 71-year-old Jhunu died. The Dangols’ standing in the local community was clear – her funeral procession saw crowds waving her on during her final journey. 40

History In 1973, five-star chef Gopal Dangol was flown to work at a city centre curry house. Jhunu and their two daughters arrived in 1975. Along with four colleagues, in 1979, go-ahead Gopal set up The Kathmandu in Sackville Street and left in 1985 to go it alone. He ignored warnings against investing in the rundown, drug-drenched West Didsbury of the 1980s, followed his instinct and, alongside his wife, opened their very own compact Asian restaurant on Burton Road. The first night’s five customers vowed to return and bring pals along too – and they did. From the start, the entire clan pitched in, including today’s MD, Buda, then too small to even reach the bar! The Great Kathmandu’s reputation snowballed. Staff turnover then and now remains negligible – and consistent with the area’s gradual gentrification, pub-closing punch-ups before a late-night curry died down too. How’s this for loyalty? Every Monday since 1986, a group of curry-loving consultants, originally based in nearby Withington Hospital, meet up for their

weekly Great Kathmandu fare. The bonds are reciprocal. The family displayed a muso friend’s first CD in their waiting area ‘shrine’ for good luck and then, after refurbishment, ensured the disc was not binned but carefully relocated. Expansion Acquiring the next-door video store in 2009 marked a real turning point. More space, more comfort, larger kitchen – but no loss of quality for perfectionist Gopal, insistent on butchering each lamb himself. Generous with his skills, Gopal, whose past boasts an audience with the King of Nepal, has occasionally divulged trade secrets to customers and trained all his children and chefs, including sonin-law Ramesh Khadka, Head Cook for 27 years. The Food Buda clarifies some differences between Indian and Nepalese cuisine saying:“It’s about subtlety and depth of flavour, not merely taste. Our garam masala is roasted, ground and blended in-house from fourteen spices. Our curries aren’t sweet. We don’t bombard you with spices either. We offer a balance – a sort of symphony of seasonings. By Fay Wertheimer

At your first mouthful, the richness of the sauce comes through. It’s followed by the onions and tomatoes. Then, like savouring good wine, the garam masala emerges. Cooking must come from the heart. Traditional Nepalese lamb or chicken chwela and Asha’s tandoori chicken shaksuka are very popular here, but over the years, our makhan’s proved our main award winner.”

Lockdown & the future Lockdown was tough. Its easing increased the uptake of takeaways and the provision of al fresco dining. Buda says, “We’re open 365 days a year. This leaves no time for making improvements. Lockdown was our opportunity to renovate and update the kitchen and restaurant without losing the original essence of The Great Kathmandu.”

Mind you, Buda’s Namchi chilli chicken – inspired by his 2019 Alzheimer’s fundraising trek to Base Camp Everest and Looking ahead, things are good. Already a dab hand with emergency descent by helicopter – also contributed to The customers, Buda’s six-year-old daughter confided, “Daddy, Great Kathmandu’s impressive 2019 English Curry Award. when you and Grandpa aren’t here anymore – I’ll be the boss!”

Helping Joel to live longer The parents of second year London University English student Joel Danziger appear composed and positive, but in reality, Steph Danziger and Ian Runacres state clearly, “We are living in a slow-motion car crash.” uk.gofundme.com/f/helpjoellivelonger

Two years ago, their 18-year-old son, Royal Exchange Theatre and TV child actor Joel, had just celebrated gaining an impressive clutch of diverse A-levels. He was all set for uni. A fortnight later, on August 28th, 2019, the family’s life was to change completely. Visiting the optician to check out his eye strain and recurrent headaches, the teen was immediately sent for a brain scan. This revealed a golf-ball-sized tumour buried in the right side of Joel’s brain. This had been affecting his optic nerve and eyesight. October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

45

On September 5th, at Salford Royal Hospital, an eight-hour operation removed that tumour. It was then frozen. Aggressive, erratic and presently incurable, this brain cancer was a glioblastoma. Patients’ average life expectancy after diagnosis is 18 months. When Joel asked if he would see the age of thirty, the answer was a simple ‘no.’

process would not benefit anyone other than Joel, hence the price.

Following months of gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy at The Christie in 2019 and 2020, the NHS’ long-term plan offered three-monthly scans. Nothing more for now. Yet a tailor-made dendritic cell vaccine, manufactured in either Cambridge or Germany, could potentially improve and extend his life. Working with the UK lab would be less disruptive to his studies, so the family investigated further. The treatment could be delivered privately by star neurosurgeon Professor Keyoumars Ashkan at King’s College Hospital in London – and each course of treatment would cost over £200,000.

Steph and Ian say, “Joel was in and out of the appointment in 30 minutes. It’s amazing. Presently, he looks and is OK – unlike after his previous therapies. If these inoculations can extend his life by three years, something else may have been discovered by then. The aim is to delay the tumour’s recurrence. We live in limbo, watching on as Joel hopefully enjoys his life. Meanwhile, we are frozen. We observe friends planning their futures, their house moves and their holidays. We daren’t book anything. But we remain strong together because we communicate so well. We each do our own thing. Ian walks in the hills. I see friends. And Joel stays in London as much as possible – coming home mainly for his scans.”

With uni on the horizon and insight into his knife-edge situation, in August 2020, Joel finally acquiesced to the crowdfunding. Amazingly, via former Parrs Wood High School pals’ efforts, private donations and public responses, the first £200,000 target was soon His parents are public sector professionals. reached. Irrespective of his uncertain situation, would-be scriptwriter Joel’s fresher year was obviously dominated by Covid.

Tuition was online. Family visits were limited by lockdowns and socialising varied. Being a self-sufficient only child served him well. Unwilling to be defined by his cancer, he hid all medications from his peers and made light of most problems. The £200,000 raised has enabled Joel to receive his first bespoke treatments. The family is utterly indebted to the efforts of former Parrs Wood High School pals, the manifold private donors, the £15,000 from the sale of a silver disc by band James’ trumpeter and other ongoing projects, such as wild swimming around each small Lake District island. As Joel’s glioblastoma will return, the appeal will continue.

Ian concludes, “Raising £200,000 for this first treatment and manufacturing such an effective vaccine have been unbelievable achievements. They are buying Joel time. But we have no illusions. There are more hurdles ahead as we get ready for his next round. Above all, we are so very grateful to everyone as it is enabling our son Joel to have a life.”

First in the Fight Recently re-released, Manchester book First in the Fight covers the history of the city from when the first women marched to St Peter’s Field to the reformers who fought shoulder to shoulder for equality and social change Written by historian Helen Antrobus and Andrew Simcock, First in the Fight tells the stories of Manchester’s radical women and is adorned by 20 stunning artworks by the city’s Women in Print co-operative. First in the Fight is a showpiece tribute to the Manchester women who changed the world. It is beautifully crafted and has been described as a ‘visual feast’ as the original images on this page clearly demonstrate.

The statue, located in Manchester’s St Peter's Square, has become an iconic expression of the legacy of Emmeline Pankhurst, whose spirit is reflected in the book.

“This is a book to treasure, with each of the women’s individual stories accompanied by a beautiful illustration from the Women in Print collective.”

Emily Wright, of iNostalgia publishers and Editor of First in the Fight says: “First in the Fight is part of the legacy of Our Emmeline, a project that captured the heart of the nation.

The full list of women featured in First in the Fight is: Margaret Ashton, Lydia Becker, Louise Da-Cocodia, Margaret Downes, Elizabeth Gaskell, Annie Horniman, Sunny Lowry, Kathleen Ollerenshaw, Emmeline Pankhurst, Christabel Pankhurst, Sylvia Pankhurst, Mary Quaile, Elizabeth Raffald, Esther Roper, Enriqueta Rylands, Olive Shapley, Shena Simon, Marie Stopes, Ellen Wilkinson and Emily Williamson.

The 20 women featured in First in the Fight were all on the long-list for the WoManchester statue project, which led to the creation of the Our Emmeline sculpture.

“In telling the stories and celebrating the achievements of all the women that were part of the original public vote, we wanted to ensure that their legacy is preserved in print – and we could think of no better way of doing this than by working with local authors and artists.

ASK THE EXPERTS

Susie Batista Susie Batista from Cheshire Property Staging believes your home is a place where stepping through the front door or into a particular room should fill you with instant love and admiration. How could an interior designer help me? Many of our clients have a wonderful sense of style and specific ideas about pieces, colours and fabrics. These details, however, aren’t enough to create successful interiors. Professional designers see the bigger picture, helping to clarify the overall vision for your space and how you want it to feel. With years of expertise, deep knowledge of brands and longstanding vendor relationships, they escort their projects to smooth finishes and prevent costly mistakes along the way. How is home staging different from interior design? Home staging is the art of presenting spaces for sale. Staged interiors are temporary installs designed to appeal to a broad range of potential buyers. The goal is to make those

buyers easily see themselves living there, triggering the desire for a space that motivates quick, high bids. Interior design is personal and permanent. Your designer needs to understand your specific lifestyle, preferences and functional needs. Interior design is custom, specific to you, creating a unique and individual space that truly feels like home. How involved would I need to be in an interior design process? As your project begins, we’ll need your detailed input to help establish your style, functional needs and other objectives. Once your design plan is drafted and approved, you can choose to participate in as little or as much of the decision-making as you’d like. Some clients prefer a handsoff approach, while others want to be an active part of the process. We’re happy to accommodate either preference.

John Murphy Mr John Murphy is a Consultant Breast Surgeon at Spire Manchester Hospital. He has two decades’ experience working in breast surgery and specialises in treating patients with breast concerns. What are the main symptoms of breast cancer that women should be aware of? The main symptoms to look out for are: a new lump that persists after a period, a lump in the armpit, a change in breast shape or thickening of the skin, pulling of the skin in the breast when lifting an arm, new bloody or clear discharge from the nipple and/or a patch of discoloration around the nipple. How is breast cancer care evolving? Breast cancer care has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, with the chances of patients surviving breast cancer increasing dramatically. Patients’ treatment pathways are individual and based on the type of breast cancer. The type of surgery offered has dramatically changed over the last two decades

to incorporate plastic surgical procedures in the same sitting in order to improve the patient’s quality of life following the breast cancer treatment in the long-term. What services can Spire Manchester offer to somebody who has been diagnosed with breast cancer? Spire Manchester is in a fantastic position within the independent sector, because we provide all types of breast cancer care (including the most complex type of surgery) to patients. Our ‘one-stop breast clinic’ is available several days a week and enables patients to be assessed before undergoing X-rays and scans, all within one visit, with nationally recognised experts in the field of breast care.

Levelling up – when will we taste the jam? There’s been a great of deal of talk about ‘levelling up’ since Boris Johnson’s decisive election victory in December 2019 By London correspondent Vincent Burke

Image GMCA

The PM said recently that the government will have "made progress in levelling up when we have begun to raise living standards, spread opportunity, improved our public services and restored people's sense of pride in their community." But what does levelling up really mean and what is needed to translate words into action so that people in Manchester and the north feels its effects? Whilst insisting that “levelling up is not a ‘jam-spreading exercise”, the PM sounds a little bit unsure of what it is and has asked local leaders with ideas on how to improve their constituencies to come forward, promising to give them "the tools to make things happen for their communities".

Greater Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham, is clear about what will achieve levelling up and has called for the creation of a “London-style transport network with London-level fares, which will unite towns and cities and transform the life chances of the 2.8 million people who live here.” All he needs is the powers and resources from central government to achieve it. Other commentators seem to agree that the key to levelling up is greater powers for local communities and investment in infrastructure.

October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Stephen Church, North Markets Leader for EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young), agrees that capital projects, including the £640bn investment in infrastructure will lay the foundations of levelling up. However, he feels “to fully succeed, governments must work together with the wider business community to maximise the potential of levelling up’s regional prosperity.”

the capital in the ‘race for space’, recent house prices in the North West have outstripped London’s for the first time in years. Covid has also shown that technology makes it increasingly irrelevant where you work, making the need to live in the capital less obvious.

“After the global economic crisis of ten years or so ago, London’s house prices rebounded quicker than the rest of the country, including the North West, so there’s a certain amount of catching up to do since prices around the UK are starting from a lower base.” But is it a blip or a permanent change? Bill thinks house prices will rise outside the capital for a while though he thinks it’s likely there will be some ‘self-correction’. If house prices in other parts of the country continue to outperform London, he thinks the capital will start to be very attractive again, leading many to once more seek their fortunes there, Dick Whittington style.

Bradley Martin, Senior Associate at DWF Law LLP, feels ‘levelling up’ could be an opportunity for the North to secure the powers and funding to create better jobs with higher salaries and deliver wider benefits to the region. He also thinks that Rishi Sunak needs to play his part, saying the Chancellor should create a 'UK Shared Prosperity Fund' to make up for the EU funds lost following Brexit and prioritise growth in the North and other areas of the country. He also backs the idea of giving the Metro Mayors more powers and more funding for public transport – especially transport into the cities and towns, highlighting that roughly twice as much is spent per person on transport in London as in the North of England. Finally, there needs to be a measure attached to levelling up, so voters can track the success of the policy. The whole picture about quality of life in Manchester compared to London has been more complicated by the impact of Covid. As many people flee

Tom Bill, Head of UK Residential Research at property specialists Knight Frank believes that levelling up and the housing market are increasingly linked and that Covid has intensified the issues of affordability.

The impact of Covid has made the complicated political, economic, transport and housing issues around levelling up even more intricate. One thing is clear: levelling up will not be achieved overnight and there’s much work to do – and money to be spent – before Mancunians and other Northerners start to taste any ‘jam’ spread their way.

“Over the last year or so, we’ve seen people going to ‘secondary cities’ outside London because they can get a greater ‘bang for their buck’,” he explained. “We’ve also seen blue chip companies increasingly going to cities outside London. Over the next few years, the story of house prices will be more interesting outside London than in the capital.

ASK THE EXPERTS Amanda McAlister Amanda is the Managing Partner at McAlister Family Law. One of the very few in the region to be named a Leading Individual by Legal 500, she is a trailblazer in doing divorce differently. What makes a good divorce lawyer? I am asked this question so often. A good divorce lawyer is someone with a clear strategy, who plans and who can deliver on the outcome you want. A good divorce lawyer is also able to offer you expertise in multiple areas of family law. Many say they do, but few have what we have – specialists in children law, international divorce, arbitration, and divorce and finance. Why do people think getting divorced is so expensive? The major problem of high costs in divorce cases is almost always down to the case not being managed well. If your divorce lawyer hasn’t put together a carefully thought-out

strategy, then you’re going to find costs escalating because there’s no plan in place for achieving the outcome you want. Can a divorce be amicable? Almost always, the answer is ‘no’, it can’t. Separation is painful for all concerned. Trust me, I know. I may be a divorce lawyer, but I’m divorced myself, so I know exactly what it’s like. But I can tell you what divorce can be is respectful and if it’s respectful, then you’re doing the right thing, which means you’ve much more chance of achieving that positive outcome and moving on successfully with your life. Guy Kelland Guy Kelland is Managing Director of Kellands Chartered Financial Planners based in Hale village. Over the last 30 years, he has built a national company with a local Cheshire base. He still loves and enjoys the challenges each year brings in delivering the very best advice and financial outcomes for all clients. He takes the responsibility that comes with the many millions of pounds entrusted to the Kellands team very seriously. When choosing a financial adviser, what are some of the important factors to consider? Firstly, it always helps if a trusted source can recommend an adviser they have been impressed by. Many of the clients who will approach Kellands this year will be from personal recommendations. Beyond that, you should be looking for a company with a strong team that is well resourced. The advisers should be highly qualified – preferably from a chartered firm. Seek whole-of-market advice with no restrictions or conflict of interest, where the client is central to the advice process. Check out any testimonials or national awards that demonstrate the company’s service, ethos and culture.

As a business, what were your greatest achievements through lockdown? I am most proud of the way the whole Kellands team supported each other and how quickly they adapted to the new working practices required. Our investment into cutting-edge technology systems paid dividends, enabling us to provide a totally uninterrupted service. Advice is even more valuable during periods of adversity. This principle was again demonstrated in March 2020, when lockdown struck and world stock markets fell. Kellands’ advisers know the importance of sticking to the main objective and not selling at the bottom. Since that low point, it is comforting to know that all Kellands’ investment strategies have surpassed pre-lockdown values.

E D U CAT I O N N E W S The journey to wellbeing

The organisation Young Minds has carried out valuable surveys of young people throughout the COVID pandemic and the results of the fourth survey, from January 2021, are of no surprise. 67% of those surveyed felt that the pandemic would have a negative, long-term effect on their mental health. This is incredibly worrying and, therefore, for those of us who work in schools, it is the wellbeing of our pupils that must be our key focus over the coming year.

had weekly wellbeing lessons on the timetable for over five years. This year, they will be particularly important as bubbles ‘burst’ and ‘normal’ life in school, we hope, resumes. The lessons will once again focus on the building of character, giving students the skills and experiences to be resilient, tenacious and confident alongside strategies that aim to help them cope with stress – all skills that will help them deal with the impact of COVID and ultimately prepare them for their future, way beyond the school gates.

Some of the main issues affecting all pupils across the country have been caused by ‘bubble’ restrictions. Last year, pupils were unable to interact socially across their own or other year groups, face coverings impacted emotional understanding, the reliance on technology during lockdowns increased feelings of isolation and, with the inability to offer all of the extra-curricular opportunities that pupils are usually involved in, the happiness of millions of young people was, inevitably, impacted.

The opportunity for every young person to flourish must be the aim of all school strategies as we approach this school year. For me, a fulfilling education is about being a rounded individual, one where the student understands the importance of community, social responsibility and collaboration and one where there is access to those wider opportunities that will enable the individual to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom. By supporting students with their wellbeing, Even before COVID, prioritising student wellbeing and we will be helping them to overcome the difficulties of the happiness was the bedrock of my own educational philosophy past 18 months and, as a result, to flourish. and this will continue to be the case over the coming year as we rebuild our community and encourage students to enjoy spending time together. Indeed, at Manchester High School By Helen Jeys for Girls, we take a proactive approach to wellbeing and have Head Mistress of Manchester High School for Girls October/November 2021 | salutions.co.uk

Alderley girls celebrate excellent A-level achievements Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is delighted for its Upper Sixth pupils, who have achieved an excellent set of A-level results. This year’s outstanding results have continued to reflect the successes of previous years with 66% of grades awarded A*/A and 82% of all grades awarded at A*/B. In addition, 43% of our Upper Sixth achieved a clean sweep of at least three A grades across the 20 subjects studied at AESG. These grades truly reflect our pupils’ resilience, commitment and dedication to their studies over the last two years. Amongst the many success stories across our community are sisters Lara Coulter, who achieved 4 A*s and can now look

forward to reading engineering at Durham University, and Ella Coulter, who has accepted a place at the University of St Andrews to read medicine after achieving 3 A*s. In addition, Head Girl, Florence Sabry, achieved 3 A*s and will be reading English at the University of Exeter from September. The school is incredibly proud of the way in which the Sixth Form community has coped during the past two years and, although they did not have the opportunity to complete traditional examinations and demonstrate their abilities to external examiners, they excelled in their attitude towards remote learning and absolutely deserve their successes.

Supported by their teachers, they have shown academic ambition and resilience in the most difficult of circumstances and have continued to take opportunities to develop their wider talents. I am immensely proud of them.”

Small is beautiful and academically successful at Bridgewater School At Bridgewater School in Worsley, success and happiness go hand in hand. The emphasis placed on achievement and the celebration of success in all areas of school life makes all the difference. A difference which manifests itself in excellent pass rates, year after year. Headmistress, Mrs Nairn, said: “Whilst our pass rates speak for themselves, the height of success is seeing these young people grow into the true individuals they are. Our students achieve their personal best because they study a broad and challenging curriculum in a happy and reassuring environment. We also give them the opportunity to discover

previously undiscovered talents, both within and beyond the classroom, which explains why so many of our young people go on to make so much of their lives.” Despite another year of educational disruptions, the dedication of Year 11 students at Bridgewater School in Worsley has been justly rewarded, with a record-breaking 61% of students receiving a grade of 9-7 for their GCSE coursework.

FLYING MACHINES DJI Mini 2 I’M A huge fan of drones, as I’m sure most middle-aged dads are. It’s the archetypal dad toy: something we could never have imagined when we were kids and something even the most ham-fisted among us can operate with satisfying results. By results, I mean cinematic quality aerial film and photo footage controlled by your phone, which not long ago, you could only get from millions of pounds’ worth of helicopter and camera gear. I couldn’t believe it when I got my first drone, a DJI Spark, and straight out of the box, I was able to shoot smooth, clear swooping vistas and even track a moving subject while circling them from the air. With minimal practice, I was out shooting beach and forest adventures for my YouTube channel (red_dread, in case you’re interested). Of course, it wasn’t long before new laws came in to govern drone use, given how dangerous one could be in the wrong hands. And that’s no bad thing – it just means you have to register your drone and apply for an operator

licence. But most of the rules currently only apply to drones that weigh over 250g – so what did the clever manufacturers do? They invented ones that weigh 249g or less! This one, for example, the DJI Mini 2, is by no means a toy. Sure, it’s lightweight, but it can still shoot in 4k resolution, transmit footage up to 10km away, fly for more than half an hour on one battery and even remain stable in winds up to 38kph. The mobile software also allows you to edit and even upload your footage straight to social media on the fly, plus, it has all the same clever tricks as the bigger models, such as auto return to home, in case you lose sight of it in the sky. Prices start from £419, dji.com

Syma RC helicopter No dad can ever get away with having a toy without letting the kids have a go, or at least getting them a version for themselves as a distraction. If it’s a cheap and cheerful flying gadget they want, this thing is unbelievable. Advertised as having ‘strong crash resistance’, it’s ideal for the most boisterous children to play with and as the videos prove, you really can tread on it, chuck it off the roof, slam it into walls and still, it will fly. OK, it doesn’t have on-board cameras or some of the cleverest flying modes of a serious drone, but for the price, it’s a great way of getting used to flying your own little machine. And for beginners, you might be surprised to hear it does still have automatic take-off and landing as well as altitude hold. Which, for under £60, makes this an amazing bargain. 58

NISSAN NOSE REMEMBER that new-car smell? It’s one of the most powerfully evocative sensations, which takes hold of you when you’re lucky enough to be shopping around car showrooms, and there’s no air freshener on earth that can replicate it.

That’s why Nissan has hired a specialist odour engineer to make sure its combinations of natural and man-made materials and adhesives combine to make the best sensory experience for the customer. Peter Karl Eastland, a British chemist based at Nissan’s European Technical Centre, tests There’s a surprising amount of science materials under multiple real-world that goes into making sure a car interior conditions to achieve the coveted smells just right. And not all of us have an on-board scent diffuser like the latest Mercedes-Benz S Class.

new-car smell that car buyers find so irresistible. This unique and surprising job has been put to the test on the all-new Qashqai, which is now on sale in the UK, and Nissan is so confident in this unique selling point that odour evaluation is now a key part of the development process for every Nissan vehicle.

Yes, it does have plenty to see in the way of exhibits – in fact, it’s one of the biggest indoor attractions in the region, which helps in this rainy part of the world – but that’s not the big difference. As its name suggests, the Derbyshire-based collection boasts 150 modern British classics, including Sir Elton John’s Bentley. And what makes it particularly special is that, for a modest ticket price, you actually get to drive some of the cars!

DRIVE DAD’S CAR Here’s a brilliant idea for a grand day out for any car fan in the North West. A stone’s throw away in the Peak District is a new visitor attraction called the Great British Car Journey. And this is no ordinary motor museum…

From just £49, Drive Dad’s Car gives you the opportunity to get behind the wheel of 30 of the most popular cars ever made in Britain – everything from the Sunbeam Rapier Convertible, a rare original Avenger and Rolls Royce Silver Spirit to the Ford Capri, Reliant Robin and, of course, the original MK1 Mini. Personally, I’d choose the bog standard ‘80s Ford Escort, which was the car so many of my generation had as teenagers. This particular memory lane is a picturesque six-mile closed-road circuit, which I suspect will be reawakening many a happy reminiscence. greatbritishcarjourney.com
