Ultherapy Skin Lifting Youthful skin lifting and tightening with Ultherapy

Ultherapy is the only non-surgical FDA approved cosmetic procedure that uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the growth of new collagen deep within the skin. Stimulation of collagen production allows for the natural lifting and tightening of the skin on the face and neck areas. The production of new collagen occurs over time, so results can become more apparent over three months with effects lasting two to three years. Ultrasound imaging allows us to see the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment, ensuring the energy is deposited precisely where it will be most effective. It is the only treatment available that utilises this technology. “Thank you Dr Nyla for my amazing facial. I had ultherapy which is a one off non-surgical facial lift without the need for fillers. Although Dr Nyla is absolutely brilliant with fillers too!” AFTER TREATMENT LOWER FACE, JAWLINE, DÉCOLLETAGE AND NECK

Father and son win Run Around the Runway race in style Keeping it in the family, Olly and Zac Gaillemin celebrate their victory

Father and son Olly and Zac Gaillemin ran their first race together, crossed the finish line in first and second place, and have now set their sights on the Boston Marathon.

Thirteen-year-old Zac was first across the line at the British Airways and Manchester Airport’s ‘Run Around the Runway’ in the impressive time of 22 minutes and three seconds, closely followed by his proud dad. Olly and Zac live in Sale and are members of Sale Harriers, but have never been able to compete together before, as they run in different age categories. It’s always been Olly’s dream to compete in the Boston Marathon, so after winning the first prize of two British Airways flights to Boston, an entry at next year’s event in the USA is a very real possibility. More than 180 serious and fun runners registered for the race, which was started by television presenter Eamonn Holmes. On the day, there was also a family fun day (held under Concorde at the Runway Visitor Park) and a race warm-up with Global Grooves, a Brazilian drumming and dancing group based in Manchester. The event raised more than £3,500, which will be divided equally between Flying Start, British Airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief, and Manchester Airport’s nominated charity CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading cancer charity for children and young people.

Community café gets set for summer Home Community Café at Emmanuel Church in Didsbury marked the transition to summer, and its new phase under the steerage of tom Swingler, Café Manager and Home’s trustees, with bright, beautiful blooms created by children from Beaver Road School and Didsbury Church of England Primary School. A Year 4 class from Beaver Road, with the help of local artist Ned Ankers, also created a giant Pompeii-inspired fresco for the cafe’s community room. Ned, who spent over 20 years as a secondary school art teacher, has recently set up a local business called Ned’s Art Room. Café Manager tom Swingler said: “Home is a registered charity that is run mainly by volunteers, so local link-ups like this really help us to bring the space to life and encourage new people to try out our café. We get customers and volunteers from all walks of life and of every age. Our youngest known visitor was just a few days old and our eldest customers are well into their nineties. We run a programme of Home events, but we also provide free space for community groups to meet in our Living Room. We really are a café for the whole community, and I have lots of plans for future community collaborations.”

Volunteers are being sought to help the Home Community Café make over its outside space on Saturday 10th June (10am-12pm). Participants will be asked to dig, clear, lift, load, build, paint, plant and shift all sorts of garden matter, ready for the long-awaited summer. On Sunday 2nd July, Home will host one of its popular weekend celebrations. This time, the theme is ‘Wellness – Mind, Body and Soul’, and the newly planted gardens will provide a backdrop to lots of stalls and activities.

WHEN GARY MET RAJ

Salutions Publications | PEOPLE

It was 2016 and all about to go spectacularly pear-shaped. Gary Usher, Chef and Patron of acclaimed restaurants Sticky Walnut in Hoole and Burnt Truffle in Heswall, had just given a talk at the north's biggest hospitality exhibition about crowdfunding for his latest project.

A

By Ray King / Photography Mike Browne

fterwards, one of his audience at the Northern Restaurant and Bar show, Raju W. Haider, introduced himself to Gary. Raju is the owner of the growing hospitality design, supply and project management company CKB Ltd, and the brief meeting turned out to be significant moment. Unbeknown to Gary, as he was speaking, an email had arrived saying that the Chorlton site he’d chosen for his third restaurant, Hispi, had fallen through. Staff had been recruited, websites prepared, furniture bought. Worse still, much of the capital for the new restaurant, as it had been for the Burnt truffle, had been raised through Kickstarter, a crowd-funding website. Gary had effectively sold his backers £50,000 worth of meals in advance. Now, there was no restaurant.

HEARTBROKEN A devastated, heartbroken Gary took to twitter and asked his 17,000 followers to bear with him whilst another site was found. He also promised to personally reimburse anyone who felt they no longer wanted to be involved with the project. Raju, whose Manchester-based company had quickly progressed from fabricating bespoke stainless steel and catering equipment for restaurant kitchens into design, project management and consultancy for all aspects of the hospitality industry, read of Gary's plight and got in touch via @StickyWalnut. Raju knew of a couple of sites Gary might be interested in. One of them was the former home of the popular independent restaurant Café jem&i on School Lane, not in Chorlton, but Didsbury. Gary says: "Raj told me that he had supported Burnt truffle and Hispi with crowdfunding pledges. I thought it was too good to be true, so I had his membership checked out. It was true! How great was that?"

However, there was a snag, remembers Raj: "Gary wasn't very keen on the site. He didn't like the look of it, particularly from the outside." Raju's solution? He had the exterior painted British racing green. "It looked awful, I hated it,” says Gary, “then I loved it. It was making a statement." KEEP IT SIMPLE Raju's design brief – insomuch as there was a brief at all – was to ‘keep it simple and let the food do the talking’. When they were planning the design of Hispi, Raju took Gary around the restaurants and bars of Manchester's Northern Quarter, but the latter dismissed the scene as "way too cool". He wanted humility. together, they decided on good materials – oak, natural stone, real timber flooring, and key pieces such as the large reclaimed statement mirror from India and an oak dresser. Raju, whose business is described by Gary as "a one-stop shop for restaurants", has been in the industry ten years and founded CKB Ltd in 2010. "It grew into what it is today through people asking me where to source not only equipment of all kinds but also key ingredients,” explains Raj. “I'm not an interior designer as such, but I do like to think I know how to put a restaurant together." GAME CHANGER Raj’s early clients were Chinese and Indian restaurants, including eastZeast, Zouk, Mughli and Yang Sing. Then came a game-changer, the opportunity to collaborate with Living Ventures. He worked on parts of Aiden Byrne's iconic Manchester House Restaurant, in which he is a partner, including the bar and some back-of-the-house areas. This, says Raj, raised the business to another level. Hispi, with its 85 covers, finally launched in October 2016 and was met with instant critical acclaim. Within six months of opening, it had been named among

Restaurant Magazine's top 100 restaurants for 2017. The restaurant has also been nominated for Best UK Standalone Restaurant at Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2017. "I don't usually gloat, but I'm ridiculously proud of that," says Gary. Their next project – the most ambitious yet – is already under way. The latest Kickstarter campaign, launched at the beginning of May, is seeking £200,000 to crowdfund a 120-cover restaurant called Wreckfish in a landmark but derelict Victorian building in the Ropewalks area of central Liverpool. CROWDFUNDING Given Gary’s track record, you'd back him to succeed. Originally from St Albans, he once worked with Angela Hartnett as a sous chef at the York & Albany in Camden. He investigated crowdfunding when the banks refused to lend him money. Sticky Walnut had been named AA Restaurant of the Year in 2014 and he wanted to open a second: "I wanted to promote people – sous chef to head chef, restaurant deputy manager to manager, and so on, but I couldn't. The banks wouldn't help." He turned to Kickstarter after his brother had used the crowdfunding site, unbound, to launch a book, but he wasn't sure if crowdfunding could finance a whole restaurant. Despite believing it had never been done in the UK before, 891 people backed Burnt truffle by pledging over £103,000 on the strength of Gary's growing reputation as a chef and restaurateur. "We had a following because we'd been getting great reviews,” recalls Gary, “but among the first to get behind us were the chefs. When people like Michelin-starred Nathan Outlaw put money in, people take notice." They've been taking notice ever since. Last year, Gary Usher was named by Olive magazine as one of the 13 most influential chefs in Britain.

Danny Fox is on his way and – with vast experience gleaned along the way from industry legends like the late tim Bacon and Jeremy Roberts, with whom he was a founding partner of hugely successful Living Ventures – he knows precisely where he's going. The irony is that, at the beginning, it was all a bit of an accident. NO ESCAPE "I first came across tim Bacon when he was opening Mulligan's Bar,” says Danny. “I was training to be a PE teacher at university in Leeds and was interviewed as a bartender. I went for a summer job and basically never escaped! I carried on going back and working there while I was doing my degree which, in the end, I never put to any use. "It turned out that I became pretty good at training people for bar work, so when tim opened other bars, I would take a week off university to train the staff. That's how it all began." At Christmas in Danny's final year at university, John Green (an associate of tim Bacon) had gone off to open a bar in Hong Kong: "He asked me and three best mates to go to Hong Kong so I finished my degree and we flew out there,” remembers Danny. Amid the party-town atmosphere of Hong Kong, prior to its transfer from British rule to the People's Republic of China in 1997,

Green's bar was a raucous success. It was called China Jump. The bar's local notoriety hit international headlines in 1996 when pictures of England footballer Paul Gascoigne, lying back in a dentist chair while vodka and tequila were poured down his throat, surfaced just ahead of the European Championships. Danny's two-year stint at China Jump had finished at the end of 1993, long before the Gazza incident, but he does confess to helping to carry the dentist chair "half way across Hong Kong" before it was installed in the bar. IDEAS AND DREAMS "I came back full of dreams and ideas about starting up a new business, and went to see tim for some advice on a design," says Danny, "but instead, two hours later, I found myself running a Manchester bar tim had just bought called JW Johnson's." It was the beginning of a remarkable success story. Danny became operations manager of Life Restaurants, set up by tim Bacon and Jeremy Roberts, then operations director of Living Ventures, which grew 34 restaurants across three brands. Living Room, opened in Manchester's Deansgate in 1999, became a phenomenal success: "It was the right concept at the right time," says Danny. Crucially, many of the original clientele from JW Johnson's, which included members of Manchester United's ‘Class of 92’ (David Beckham, the Neville brothers, Ryan Giggs) at the beginning of their careers, gravitated to the Living Room. "By 1999, they were international stars, but they still came in as regulars. They were a tremendous magnet," recalls Danny. PART OF THE DEAL When Living Ventures sold the Living

Room (which, by 2007, had grown to 15 sites nationwide), "part of the deal" was that Danny went with them as managing director. It was a role he remained in until 2010, when he switched to operations director for the Individual Restaurant Company and was responsible for overseeing 21 branches of Piccolino and 11 variants of Restaurant Bar & Grill at sites all over the country. Danny’s gourmet restaurant Fox – 4,000 square foot and 120 covers, a £1 million venture designed by London's Alexander Waterworth Interiors but inspired by Danny's career so far – is a dramatic statement of intent. It features an energetic open kitchen centring around two essential pieces of "kit" for all to see – a feature wood-burning pizza oven and an open-fire grill. WHAT WE'RE ABOUT A firm and long-time believer in "giving people what they want", Danny is not about to complicate that simple approach. There are fewer than 70 items on a menu dominated by grills and sour dough pizza. "Even Pizza Express has more," he says, "and some places have more than 200 choices, but that's not what we're about. I love the simplicity of the provenance of food; all my dishes put the quality of protein first, cooked over fire. In my view, you can't beat it. "I put the first site here because I like the community, and the size was ideal for introducing a new concept. We may be in suburbia but there's a lot of inspiration from London and New York. Unlike Knutsford, Alderley Edge and Hale, which have streets full of restaurants, Hale Barns just has us. So we have to be the destination, and I want us to be the hub of the community, that 'third place'." There will soon be others. Danny will begin looking for the next site in the summer and aims to have identified it early next year. Watch this space. June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

But the vertical trajectory of his career path has been a vastly different story; from trainee bartender at Mulligan's Bar in what was then the Four Season's Hotel – via key roles with some of the biggest restaurant brands in Britain – to his current project, Managing Director of his own Fox Restaurant Group. The first of many restaurants he intends to roll out as a highly personalised brand was launched in The Square (Hale Barns' recently regenerated village centre) last September. And the name of the restaurant? Fox, of course.

Midsummer Night’s Dream Ladies Lunch

Images Sean Wareing Photography and Forever Unique

Beechwood Cancer Care Centre held its annual ladies lunch in March and this year’s theme was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The event was sponsored by Brown Shipley and Didsbury Magazine.

20

280 ladies were welcomed with a champagne reception and treated to a room dressed in a wonderful Midsummer theme by Eventures of Urmston, who are ambassadors and sponsors of the centre. Fleur Binnington brought the audience both to tears, and to their feet, when she spoke about her emotional Beechwood journey and how she dealt with the loss of her Husband Chris, at the age of 42.

There was also a fabulous fashion show – featuring clothes by Fizz Fashion, Forever Unique and Slaters Menswear – and hosted by trevor Jordan from Key 103. The show opened with a magical dance from Debut Arts Academy. Guests included Forever Unique owner Seema Malhotra and fellow Cheshire House wife Stacey Forsey, along with Beechwood’s latest Patron Gaynor Morgan and great

supporter tricia Penrose. trisha took to the stage and wowed the room with her rendition of Son of a preacher man, in memory of her mum, Sue Gordon who had recently lost her battle with cancer. VIP guests ended their day with a Midsummer Magic cocktail in Cloud 23. The event raised over £35,000.

Tanya Bardsley: Cheshire’s Sweetheart

The star of ITVBe's The Real Housewives of Cheshire takes a break from filming to catch up with Emily Fitzgibbons and discuss her brand-new boutique, which has already sold out of six months’ worth of stock… Located in the heart of Wilmslow, the stunning tanya Bardo Boutique sells the star’s Dreams to Reality jewellery range and her successful book Just a Girl Who Got It All – How You Can Have Your All too, alongside candles, perfumes and greetings cards, all at affordable prices. The mum of four, who wears her Angel Love pendant (from her own range) on a daily basis, says they are her favourite: “I love the necklaces; the Wish bracelets are also lovely. My mum prefers the candles, as the scent reminds her to keep working at her goals.” Footballer husband Phil has also shown his support. tanya says: “He likes that I’m a business woman now! You wouldn’t think it, but he really likes all the candles – we make him pay full price though!” The ex-model co-owns the boutique with Stephanie Ledigo (owner of Ledigo PR) and says that, together, they are a dream team:

“Steph is level headed, businessminded and sensible, whereas I’m an airy fairy. I’ve always wanted to own a shop, just not on my own, and Steph is the perfect partner.” Stephanie says: "We (Ledigo PR) have been lucky enough to work with tanya for the past three years, and the boutique seemed a natural progression. We have spent months picking the right candles and gifts, and want customers to have an experience every time they shop." Alongside the traditional shopping experience, tanya offers events such as psychic nights and seminars, and her most recent ones sold out within half an hour. She is also keen to turn the room upstairs into a permanent events space, so they can host events on a more regular basis. Discussing the boutique’s beautiful decor, tanya explains: “I really wanted the Astroturf in there, as it adds a sense of nature to the room, which is always positive. There’s a wishing well too, which

is great.” Not only was the boutique featured in the season finale of The Real Housewives of Cheshire’s, we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the upcoming series too, as tanya aims to be there every day. “I will try and be there every day, even if it is just for half an hour,” says tanya. “It’s like my new hangout! I also enjoy being in Wilmslow, it’s a buzzing community and it’s where Steph and I both live.” The most recent series of the reality show sees lots of tension and conflict between many members of the cast. “I’ve never been one for confrontation, so I try to avoid it,” admits tanya. “Sometimes it can be a very toxic experience on the show, but it’s what people want to see. At the end of the day, it’s a reality show, so we have to be honest and show real situations in our lives that aren’t always nice.”

Visit the Tanya Bardo Boutique at 1 Grove Street, Wilmslow SK9 1DU. It’s open 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday, and 12noon-4pm on Sundays. June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Your face is a work of art. Frame it well. We at H & H Eyecare believe that your choice of eyewear says more about you than any other item of clothing that you wear. Why? Spectacles are worn in the middle of your face. If you’re wearing cheap, mass produced, ill-fitting frames without a quality anti-reflective coating, it will show. Why would you buy expensive shoes for your feet or a well-tailored suit, but put cheap glasses on your face? After all, making the right eye contact can make all the difference when trying to make the right first impression or when trying to seal that all-important deal. Think craftsmanship. Just one of our carefully selected eyewear brands is handcrafted in Japan with each pair taking four months to produce. The result. An elegant and lightweight frame.

We are proud that our carefully selected frames are beautiful and durable and that you can keep them as part of your eyewear wardrobe for a lifetime. And BTW, luxury eyewear does not scream its brand. Leave the blatant brand promotion to someone else. If you want to make the right impression, invest in a quality product. Invest in yourself. Come and discover the right style of eyewear for you, over a coffee in a relaxed, friendly environment. Eye care – we have that covered too. We don’t do that in half measures either. For all your eyewear and eye care needs, come and see us now.

For the first 10 people to book in for an eye consultation and mention this magazine, you will receive £50 towards your new spectacles.

A blissful spa escape In need of a girls’ getaway or a solo spa weekend? Jill Nash experiences a summer escape at Champneys Springs, and discovers it’s just the tonic…

ExPEriEnCE a first-rate spa resort surrounded by water walkways, set amongst 31 acres of rolling countryside, and starting out some 91 years ago by an eccentric Latvian massage pioneer – the original health resort Champneys hardly needs introducing. There are four Champneys health spa resorts and six city spas spread across Britain, with springs located outside Leicester and within a two-hour drive from Manchester. here you can robe-up, relax and prepare for a pampered experience with friends or, if you prefer, enjoy a stay in complete solitude.

The Champneys approach is largely based on relaxation and wellbeing, and springs (being the UK’s first purpose-built health spa) certainly does that job. however, that’s not to say that staying here isn’t without opportunities to break a sweat. Quite the opposite. There is an extensive programme of up to 20 classes per day – think Zumba, yoga and Pilates – run by experts, and there’s local hikes too. There are bikes to hire (for free) too, meaning you can break free and explore the pretty countryside nearby. Equally, there is a fully-equipped gym, tennis court and even a full-sized football pitch, which regularly plays host to national teams and clubs seeking a little something extra for their pre-competition preparation. spa guests can expect to choose from 80 different treatments, from massage and facials to wraps and scrubs, from wellknown specialist brands such as Carita, Decléor, Elemis and Jessica. The ‘2 hours Champneys Time’ is a favourite indulgent package, which includes a signature massage, facial and a spa heaven Cocoon – sending you off to a dreamy space of relaxation. for those looking for something

alternative, they have expert-led treatments, such as specialist nutritional services or holistic services, including astrology, palmistry and psychic healing. overnight guests can enjoy remaining in their robes for breakfast and lunch, and if you happen to be alone, there’s a shared table where you can dine with other guests for company. for groups, there are plenty of social spaces for tea drinking and, after dinner, there are occasional talks on nutrition or master classes, which completes the entire experience.

DinE a stay here won’t involve fasting or being hungry. The menus are carefully crafted to encourage guests to make healthy sensible choices – choices that suit their specific needs. They consider dietary requirements, health conditions, religious beliefs, intolerances and allergies – providing nutritional information wherever possible. Champneys have also designed a ‘portion plate’, which is a way of helping their guests achieve a balance of nutrition by highlighting recommendations for each of the main food groups. individuals differ in how much food they need, but proportions of food from the different groups should remain the same and, therefore, the plates are marked to guide guests towards a healthy, balanced diet. sections include essential fats (think walnuts and flaxseed oil), fibre-rich carbohydrates (wholemeal pasta, brown rice and sweet potato), healthy protein (oily fish, lean meat and pulses) and non-starchy vegetables (asparagus, beetroot, baby corn, broccoli and mixed peppers). There are two restaurants at springs, both serving breakfast and lunch, and a coffee bar, which is open all day and offers healthy snacks, such as beetroot brownies and carrot energy balls.

included in your stay is a breakfast served in a buffet style; starting with healthy juice shots and selection of hot and cold choices. The variety is enormous and includes Bircher mueslis, boiled eggs and salads – keeping everyone’s taste buds satisfied. Lunch is also buffet style, with plenty of salads, fresh fish and desserts. Light, vegan and vegetarian dishes are available, and kosher diets can be catered for upon request (four days’ notice is required) for an additional cost. The evening menu is à la carte, with most guests choosing to dress up and some indulging in a glass of wine to two. The menu offers a ‘light’ option as well as upgrade options, such as fillet steak, for an extra cost.

STAy although the day spa visits are very popular, the overnight package or two-night Boot Camp offers excellent value for money. on offer are 89 guest accommodations, ranging from economy rooms to roomy suites. neutral hues and high-tech touches, like flat-screen Tvs and DvD players, provide the rooms' contemporary tone, and predominantly white bathroom interiors stylishly highlight vibrant bronze, gold, and brown mosaic tiles. Each room is en suite and comes with refreshment trays and Champneys products. suites are distinctive

in decor and furnishing, and many of the rooms on the ground or first floors provide a patio or balcony. if you’re planning a hen weekend, their Boot Camp with friends is a great opportunity for groups to share a special, memorable time together. Just gather eight friends or more to enjoy a unique mix of group activities, delicious cuisine and, of course, a little pampering over two days and nights – a great way to combine fitness and fun. You’ll be welcomed by your dedicated Boot Camp team at 2pm on your first day, and can change into comfy flip-flops and spa robes. as well as up to six hours of exercise per day, including indoor and outdoor activities, you’ll also each have a Thalassotherapy pool session. You’ll leave Champneys – relaxed and rejuvenated – at around 4pm (your room checkout will be 11am). The Group Girly Getaway day is a reasonable £59 per person (minimum of eight friends) and gives groups of girlfriends the opportunity to make amazing, lasting memories together. it can include fun fitness activities, for example, fit steps (based on the BBC’s strictly Come Dancing), hula hooping, Zumba, Boot Barre and talks. There too will be plenty of amazing food to eat and indulgent treatments to enjoy. Booking a day visit for individuals starts from just £69 (check in at 9am, depart at 6pm) and overnight spa breaks are priced from £137.50 (check in at 2pm, depart at 11am). Prices include a range of classes, spa facilities and access to the gym, breakfast, lunch and dinner for those staying overnight, and lunch for those visiting for the day. Treatments are added at an additional cost.

OLLy Up cLOSE wITh

In 2009, Olly Murs was a talent show contestant. Now? He’s a successful singer, songwriter, television presenter and household name. Here, Olly talks X Factor, his new album and forthcoming show at Haydock Park…

y

Q: your new album 24 Hrs is your fourth consecutive number one album… that must be a great feeling? olly: amazing, i’m very proud of that. i never expected in my wildest dreams that i would’ve got this far. Q: What do you think has made you the most successful male artist to come from The x Factor? olly: i’d like to think that i’ve done some great songs, and i think people love what i do. This album’s probably the most heartbreaking, honest album i’ve done, but i think with previous albums, i had a lot of fun. it’s just luck that people like me and people have bought my albums. i’m lucky that they do, because it doesn’t always happen like that, so i’m very grateful.

most of my hits, so this album was just an opportunity to do something different to keep my fans interested, and show them a different side to me. i’m proud of how well it has done. Q: is there a track on the album that you’re most proud of? olly: 24 hrs and flaws. 24 hrs was something else, a song that i’ve never done before production-wise. flaws was one of the best songs i’ve written with the guys that i wrote with. i love writing feel-good songs, but it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion. That’s what this album was about.

Q: Do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter?

Q: Following your successful springtime arena tour, you’re coming to Haydock Park racecourse on 11th August, as part of a series of outdoor shows. How do indoor and outdoor venues compare?

olly: Yeah, 50/50. i mean, i did run out of ideas, and i wanted to do something different. i felt like writing about what’s been actually happening. at the start of the year, i was like ‘what am i gonna write about? What am i gonna do?’ and i’m really happy that i did this album. i wrote

olly: it’s fun being outside. The show at haydock Park is different, i’ve never done anything like it. i’ve done racecourse gigs before, but not this sort of size, and it gives me chance to go to different places in the UK. i can’t wait. i mean, what’s better? i can go there during the day, have a little

flutter on a couple of the races, and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect. Q: How do you go about choosing your set list? olly: You’ve got to play the hits people know. That’s what i’ll do with the set – make it as entertaining as possible. i’ll throw in a few covers as well, have a bit of a laugh with the fans, and it’ll be a really fun day. i promise it’ll be a laugh from the start to the end and to make sure everyone goes home happy. Q: Have you got any pre-show rituals? olly: Me and the band huddle up before the show. We sing a song we’ve got as a team. i’m sure we’ll be sinking a few shots before the show as well, to get into the racecourse spirit. Q: you can expect a fantastic reaction from the Haydock Park audience; mainly local residents who love having big stars perform on their doorstep… olly: i can’t wait to see all the fans. i’m sure i’ll have a massive hangover at the end of it, but i’ll enjoy it. hopefully, it’s a lovely day weather-wise!

Win a pair of tickets to see Olly Murs perform at Haydock Park Racecourse Two lucky winners will receive a pair of tickets each to see Olly Murs in an open-air show at Haydock Park Racecourse on Friday 11th August 2017. To enter, simply answer the following question: Which musical reality television show did Olly Murs appear on? A) Pop Idol. B) The Voice. C) The X Factor. Please email your answer and contact phone number to winner@salutions.co.uk Alternatively, send a postcard with your name, address and contact phone number to: Olly Murs competition, Salutions, 5 The Stables, Wilmslow Road, Didsbury, M20 5PG. Writer howard Jacobson heads a host of literary luminaries, which will also include novelists Jenn ashworth and andrew Michael hurley, and the historian and broadcaster Michael Wood. as part of the centenary celebrations of the birth of roald Dahl, the Magnard Ensemble will perform Dahl’s revolting rhymes – loved by kids everywhere – to a musical setting by composer Paul Patterson. other festival highlights include: a whole series of short film events; family fun in Didsbury Park; a magical mystery tour in search of ‘Didsbury’s Lost american ice Cream store’; and a concert by soloists of the hallé orchestra and Manchester Camerata soloists, guest starring Didsbury mezzo Jill Taylor. 2017’s festival theme is ’roots’, celebrating Didsbury’s rich history and diverse community, whilst exploring the emotional and psychological hinterlands that shape identity and experience. “This year’s Daf features a rich and varied programme, and a wealth of talent from Didsbury, Manchester and from further afield,” says festival Director Dan Williamson. “There’ll definitely be something to challenge, thrill and entertain people of all ages and tastes. “i’d like to say a massive thank you to our hard-working festival team and to all our friends, sponsors and volunteers for making Daf 2017 happen. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible. Many thanks, also, to the people of Didsbury for your continued support. Highbank - Green Walk, Bowdon

Banking on beautiful design: hale & Bowdon’s latest in luxury living With 40 years of experience under their belt, the team at Manchester-based developer Real Estate Investment Partnerships Limited know a good opportunity when they spot one, and two derelict sites in Cheshire’s illustrious villages of Hale and Bowdon captured their attention. They spotted a gap in the market in the locale and are now bringing two new luxury developments to the prestigious postcode that will see over 50 new high-end homes created.

Salutions Publications | hoME&GarDEn

Alderbank - Ashley Road, Altrincham steve slater, Chief Executive officer of the company, says: “The developments – highbank, located in the conservation area Bowdon, and alderbank, situated between hale and altrincham – are very different but share the same attention to detail and luxurious quality that the region demands. The area is known for its spectacular large family homes, but with nearby altrincham rapidly becoming a hotspot for commuters and the desire for downsizing on the rise, we realised there’s the need for a different kind of home.” highbank was most recently used as consultation rooms for the Transform group. The £9 million project comprises 11 new homes – six apartments (including a spectacular penthouse), two adjacent threestorey townhouses, two cottages and a detached three-storey coach house. steve continues: “highbank is perfect for the affluent ‘downsizer’ or ‘empty-nester’ who still wants luxurious living but without the burden of the maintenance of a large property and land that often comes with it.” originally built in 1861, highbank is a beautiful old victorian building on Green Walk, which the Merchant Princes built and lived in. The area is steeped in history, with Green Walk once providing the route from the seventh Earl of stamford and Warrington’s home, the enchanting Dunham Massey hall, to st Mary’s Church, which still stands proudly opposite the building. The estate has since been

bequeathed to the national Trust and provides the perfect setting to enjoy the fresh air of the Cheshire countryside. steve says: “We’ve made a huge effort to retain as many of the original period features while sympathetically creating new, opulent contemporary additions and finishes to the building, which makes for a stunning end result. The rich heritage of the building is evident, but we’ve also introduced a hint of high-end, modern luxury living! “The penthouse is truly spectacular, featuring an opulent master bathroom at mezzanine level, as well as breathtaking views of the local architecture and across the Cheshire Plains.” alderbank – an £18 million scheme named after one of two grand semidetached properties that were once present on the site – was formerly known to locals as alexandra house. The site, like highbank, is also brimming with history, having once been home to John ireland, one of the country’s finest composers, and aviator John f. Leeming. Born in 1879, John ireland was regarded as one of Great Britain’s greatest twentieth century composers. The famous cellist Julian Lloyd Webber considered him to be one of the top five British composers of the Edwardian era. ireland’s father, alexander, was also a notable figure in the region as the owner and editor of the weekly newspaper the Manchester Examiner.

Under his ownership, the newspaper absorbed its main competitor, the Manchester Times, and continued to be published for 40 years. Meanwhile, John f. Leeming, who once called alderbank home, was a skilled aviator and was famous for being the first pilot to land an aircraft on a mountain in Great Britain. on 22nd December 1926, he and his co-pilot chose to land his avro avian 585 two-seater bi-plane on hellvelyn in the Lake District, which stands 3,117 feet above sea level. he was an esteemed entrepreneur, businessman and co-founder of the Lancashire aero Club, the oldest flying club in the UK and one which still exists today. alderbank is a mixture of single-level, duplex and triplex apartments, as well as six one-bedroom mews houses – all of which have already been snapped up by savvy buyers, more than a year before the homes are even due for completion. steve adds: “alderbank has been very cleverly designed to create a variety of different homes – some of which benefit from lateral living, which we’ve seen a huge demand for – to suit different needs. alderbank is unusual compared to other developments in the area in that every property in the scheme benefits from having its own private outdoor space, ranging from balconies to courtyards. The design blends high-end, contemporary style with an inviting and comfortable atmosphere.” Both schemes have been designed by local award-winning architect firm ollier smurthwaite, which draws inspiration from past and present with the aim of creating work that complements the setting while remaining unique. The firm specialises in the history of buildings and their surroundings. highbank is due for completion in september 2017, while work on alderbank has just commenced and is due to complete in november 2018. Grow your own

STYLE Am writing this from a secret bunker deep beneath West Didsbury. Have had to flee Muck Manor as convinced police are looking for me. Left instructions for Lord Muck to join me when able to slip away undetected. Am living on tomatoes, cucumbers and basil. Losing weight though, always a bonus.

a

allow me to explain. it was a sunny Tuesday last week. i’d just finished picking said tomatoes, cucumbers and basil when the postman arrived with a parcel. no note, no return address. intrigued, i ripped it open to find a harmless looking book entitled Grow Your own Drugs. at that very moment, Lady Muck’s life as a wanted fugitive began. it was a great read, packed with loads of info on the medicinal properties of plants, with simple recipes for natural remedies and beauty fixes using plants we can grow on our patios and window sills. if only i’d limited myself to the book, but no, i was hooked, i wanted more, i needed more, and so i typed ‘how to grow your own drugs’ into Google. oh… my… goodness… you wouldn’t believe what came up. Three hours later, and i had enough information to set up shop in Columbia if i had wanted to. Then the sirens started. and the road blocks. and the blue flashing lights. Up and down the street outside Muck Manor. They

were coming for me, i just knew it, so off i fled to the bunker until the coast was clear. if you fancy learning about the medicinal power of plants, but don’t want to end up in a mess like me, then grab a copy of Grow Your own Drugs by James Wong (amazon.co.uk), neal’s Yard remedies by susannah steel (nealsyardremedies.com) or use my notes below as a good starting point for your medicinal herb patch. head to your local garden centre to pick up some plants, grow your herbs in pots in a sunny spot, and you’ll be good to go. Mint. Good for digestion and hangovers. simply steep a handful of fresh peppermint leaves in hot water for five minutes, then drink. rosemary. helps memory and concentration. Take five springs of fresh rosemary, bruise them and place in one bottle of organic wine. recork and shake every day for two weeks, then drink one

small glass daily after dinner. Lavender. Calms, relaxes and can aid insomnia. also acts as an antiseptic for cuts. Place four handfuls of dried lavender flowers in a clean pop sock and tie the top to form lavender bag. Place in bath whilst water running, then relax in bath for 15-20 minutes. Aloe Vera. handy first aid remedy to keep in the kitchen for burns. slice a leaf horizontally and apply the clear gel that oozes out onto the burn. Chamomile. Great for skin irritations. Place four handfuls of roman chamomile flower heads in one litre of freshly-boiled water and leave, covered, for 15 minutes. add, once cooled, to bath water for soothing infusion for eczema. right, best keep my head down until i have legal representation. anyone got a Columbian lawyer on speed dial? The Stanneylands

By Ray King

The delightful Edwardian country house hotel on the edge of town is back with a 21st century flourish from the moment you enter the spacious reception, the changes instituted by the new owners' £1.7m refurbishment are evident; the mood is lighter, more casual, and with a much greater emphasis on dining. The first option is The Tap & Pantry, with its relaxed, almost pub-like environment, featuring all-day dining beneath the soaring glass roof of an extended conservatory and with a traditional bar serving craft ales, wines and spirits. The second is The Grill room, which has, perhaps, seen fewest changes under the new scheme and rightly so. it is a gem of a space, with its walls clad from floor to ceiling in golden oak panelling, aged mirrors at one end of the long room and a period fireplace at the other. Tables are luxuriously draped in heavy linen and chairs are upholstered in gold and turquoise velour. We took our place at a table by one of the bay windows at The Grill room and breathed in the candle-lit elegance. The new menu – devised by returning Chef Bob Eggington and vastly experienced Consultant iain Donald (who was head chef at stanneylands during the mid-1980’s glory days) – is a list of modern British classics, leaving diners utterly spoilt for choice. Would we go for the Western isles scallops or Barbecued Beetroot? Calf ’s Liver or rib-eye steak, maybe with half a lobster on the side? Whilst we were deciding what to eat, complimentary amuse-bouches, comprising dainty deep-fried, cheesy, mustardy Bon-bons and salmon Mini Tartlets arrived, along with a basket of excellent artisan bread. i started with a superb Lobster, Prawn and avocado salad, served with a piquant homemade Thousand island dressing – a palette of brilliant colours on a black plate. The seafood was at once delicious and generous, and the avocado (the classic partner) had been puréed and dotted around this picture of a dish. Mrs K enjoyed the delicate flavours of locally-smoked Duck Breast, its ‘à l'orange’ flavour cleverly provided by clementine dressing, garnished with avocado salad. if the starters were good, the mains were stunning. from the night's specials (which included fillet steak with Wild Mushrooms and Poached sea Trout), i chose Wild Turbot with Crayfish risotto, studded by sweet young broad beans and finished with lobster essence. These were fantastic ingredients cooked to perfection. no less spectacular was Mrs K's succulent fillet of roasted shetland Cod, served with clams, some crispy, deboned chicken wings and wilted spinach. Zesty australian riesling from Tim adams provided a great match. Mrs K finished with light-as-a-feather sticky Toffee Pudding, accompanied by anglesey sea salt caramel and vanilla clotted cream ice cream. i chose ‘The Cheese Trolley’, featuring a trio of English wonders: ribblesdale ‘owd’ Ewe; shepherd's Purse, a harrogate Blue; and Tunworth, a hampshire soft cheese, described by raymond Blanc as the "best Camembert in the world". Highly recommended.

ThE FRENch: Still the best in town

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose... the more things change, the more they stay the same. Take The french restaurant at Manchester's Midland hotel, for example – new look, new name over the entrance, yet still the best in town. following the break with Executive Chef simon rogan, who decided to concentrate on his interests in Cartmel and Claridge’s, and a striking makeover of the iconic oval dining room, the restaurant has been relaunched as adam reid at The french, in recognition of the man who, for three years, was the hands-on head chef under rogan and Great British Menu 2016 winner. i confess, i was not a great fan of The french's new look when its traditional Louis Quinze style gave way to modernity. Loved the fabulous chandeliers, but the great expanse of faux wood-grained beige carpet never appealed. The latest changes, however, are bang on; those chandeliers are still there (as is the carpet), but the introduction of cream leather upholstered semi-circular booths in the centre of the room, and the subtle, organic decor have lent an air of intimacy that somehow wasn't there before.

By Ray King

The perfect setting then to enjoy adam reid's exceptionally wellbalanced six-course tasting menu and an accompanying ‘wine flight’, which was full of fascinating surprises. after a welcoming glass of Balfour Brut rosé 2007, an outstanding sparkler from Kent, and nibbles comprising squid ink Wafers with Cod’s roe Dip, we opened proper with Crispy Trotter, the crispiest crackling ever, served with a dab of piquant pickled onion purée. sommelier filippo Zito's wine flight took off with the next course, matching a beautifully subtle Pinot nero from italy's Emilia romagna with sprouting Broccoli, coated in delicate tempura,

fried in nut oil and partnered by creamy cheese and truffle; exquisite earthy flavours dancing on the palate.

With the third and fourth courses, the wine flight looped the loop. steak Blu, meltingly tender beef tartare drizzled with charcoal oil (a much gentler take on rogan's coal oil, which was a real opinion divider), nasturtium, celeriac purée and mushroom catsup, was paired with white semillon from australia's Clare valley. and the superb halibut that followed, with its brown shrimp butter and potato purée, married astonishingly well with a Portuguese red reserva from the Douro. round five brought salt-aged Goosnargh Duck Breast served with a ragù of leg meat, beetroot, kale and cherry juices, beautiful to look at and just bursting with sensational flavours. The Morello cherry notes on the accompanying wine, Pittacum aurea from spain's Bierzo region, made for an inspired match. Dessert was, quite literally, a cracker. The delicate Clementine was in fact a delicate sugar shell infused with the fruit that, when cracked open, yielded a delicious white chocolate mousse, judiciously spiked with sea buckthorn to temper its richness. The wine flight touched down in style with delicately sweet Coteaux du Layon from the Loire. attention to detail is meticulous – not least the artisan breads and savoury butters. The service, led by Kamila Plonska, was exemplary throughout, and adam reid himself was much in evidence chatting to diners. The Michelin judges should call back again soon. BLUE LOBSTER

THE TAP & PANTRY

THE STOKER’S ARMS

Alderley Edge

Wilmslow

Didsbury

Blue Lobster is the latest restaurant to pop up on alderley Edge’s busy London road. a refreshing change to have an independent restaurant in the middle of the big chain players we’ve become accustomed to. Blue Lobster, as you would expect, is a traditional italian seafood restaurant and a lot of thought has been put into their small, but perfectly formed menu. The dishes are different and not what you expect from a small high street restaurant. The interior is also not what you’d expect either – elegant, refined and subtle. The blue and bronze hues exude sophistication. The fresh scallops as a starter were huge (big enough to have as a main course) and cooked to perfection. My main was a Tuna steak with salmorigano dressing, something i would never normally choose from a menu but which was meaty and – served with pak choi – light, fresh and tasty. however, so sizable was the portion, i couldn’t quite finish it. Then we come to the cocktail menu – oh yes! With plenty to choose from, and some italian classics thrown in for good measure, we could definitely picture ourselves spending many a summer’s evening here. absolutely worth a visit for the ‘people watching’ alone.

recently renovated, The stanneylands hotel, located in Wilmslow, reopened in april 2017. on arrival, the place looks modern and impressive – the inside didn’t disappoint either. The Tap & Pantry restaurant is rustic, cosy, and fantastically British. it is a far cry from what it used to be, now featuring luxuriously upholstered chairs and wooden features. Unique plant-laden birdcages hanging from the ceiling give off a botanical and contemporary feel – very apt for their spring reopening. The extensive yet sophisticated wine and cocktail list is a great way to start an evening of fine dining or drinking with friends. Creamy Mushroom soup with crusty bread was to start, followed by Mushroom and ricotta Tortellini with spring vegetables, and a succulent rib-eye steak with all the trimmings – grilled tomato, mushroom and fluffy, chunky chips. The Tap & Pantry offers an array of delicious desserts, along with smaller options such as the mini oozing nutella Donut Bites, which can only be classed as little balls of chocolate heaven. The presentation was a 10/10, with everything perfectly chopped, drizzled and stacked. There’s no doubt about it, this is sure to be the dining hotspot for foodies and drinkers alike.

The stoker’s arms has taken over from the old o’neills in Didsbury, but it is a far cry from the pub you would once go, to watch the footy. Jen and the team have done a brilliant job of transforming this perfectly-located pub into a family-friendly foodie hotspot. at the launch of their new summer menu, we were blown away, not just by the new look and feel but by the food quality and portion sizes. We tried a host of different dishes, but our favourite had to be The hipster sharer – a sharing platter made for two but big enough for four. We had Mini Jacket Potatoes, Chicken Lollipops, Chicken Katsu fingers, and plenty more. as you can imagine, we were defeated by the food and couldn’t eat another bite. We did, however, manage a delicious bottle of sauvignon Blanc and a glass of Prosecco. There’s always room for Prosecco. as the live music started, we sat back, enjoyed the ambience and played a board game. There are plenty to choose from to keep the kids (and adults) entertained. What a great turnaround for this pub. We will be back for big food, Prosecco and Monopoly very soon.

CROMA

THE PLOUGH & FLAIL

RESTAURANT ONE EIGHTY

Didsbury

Mobberley

Pinewood on Wilmslow

Croma has to be one of south Manchester’s finest family-friendly restaurants and early saturday evening is a great time to spend with the kids, especially hungry ones. We all opted for the Garlic Prawns (£5.65), tail-on tiger prawns cooked in garlic butter, tabasco, Worcestershire sauce and white wine, with spinach and red onions, and served with olive bread. Can be messy but worth the hassle. highly recommended mains include Tandoori Chicken Pizza (£8.75) – strips of tandoori chicken breast, cashew nuts, green peppers, red onions, mozzarella, tomato and coriander, with fresh lime and a yoghurt and mint dressing – and the smoked haddock and Potato salad (£8.15), naturally-smoked haddock served warm with new potatoes, cos lettuce, spinach, cherry tomatoes, leeks and fresh green chillies, all topped with a crème fraîche and mayonnaise dressing. Don’t forget the hot Chocolate fudge Cake to finish. You can also dine al fresco and enjoy the excellent lunch menu, with Paninis and Bagels from £3.95, salads from £4.95, and Lunch Combos from £6.95.

What a gorgeous setting for a country pub. Backing onto a meadow and an alpaca farm (yes, really), The Plough & flail is a charming establishment you’ll wish you lived nearer to. it’s popular with locals and tourists alike; as we pulled into the carpark, we were stunned to find 200 people from a cycling group making the most of a cheeky pint or two in the extensive gardens. The classic British-themed menu is impressive and stylish. far from the standard ‘pub grub’, these elegant dishes aim to tantalise your taste buds.

Bring the advert from this magazine and finish off with a free coffee.

although the desserts looked incredible, we were stuffed, and retired home for a post-lunch nap. all in all, a great traditional English pub with a menu to match its setting. highly recommended.

hotel restaurants seem to be upping their game. Located within the Pinewood on Wilmslow hotel, and boasting a coveted aa rosette, restaurant one Eighty is stylish, elegant and surprising. head Chef Colin starkey has created an exceptionally eclectic menu using fresh, new ingredients we had never tried before. We started with Guatemala Coffee venison with Charred spring onion and a White onion velouté sauce, and a Kidderton ash Goat’s Cheese dish. Both starters were beautifully plated, and it seemed a shame to ruin the presentation. our main courses, chosen from the seasonal menu, were Goosnargh Chicken with Maple skin and Bubble and squeak, and a Burholme farm Beef and Pudding with Confit onions and split Pea Purée. our choices were impressively delicious, but the icing on the cake was most definitely the final course. We chose some cheeses from the northwest cheese board and, as a sweet treat, decided upon Caramel Pineapple, anise and Pink Peppercorn with a Pina Colada ice Lolly. Pina CoLaDa iCE LoLLY – WoW! Think naughty Mini Milk and you’ll be close to the mark. Definitely a must-visit if you’re near Wilmslow.

We started with a traditional red Pepper and Tomato soup served with warm, crusty bread, and a smoked salmon, Crayfish and Prawn salad served with pickled red onion and capers. Both were delicious and the portion sizes were great. To follow, a seasonal fish Pie and herb-encrusted rack of Lamb proved the perfect accompaniment to a fresh glass of sauvignon Blanc.

Rachel Darwick:

inspiring events for over 15 years Rachel Darwick and her husband Bryan own Eventures, a venue dressing and event planning company in Manchester. Here, Rachel chats to Emily Fitzgibbons about high-profile clients, her love of lavish weddings, and why there’s never a dull moment in the events industry. What gave you the idea to start Eventures? Bryan and I got married in 1997, in a marquee in our neighbour’s garden. It wasn’t like an event venue where staff would be on hand to help with the set-up and such, that’s when we thought we could do something like that. We started the business a couple of years later. Back then, venue dressers were rare, so we never planned for it to become this big. I worked for British Airways and Bryan worked in sales, we only expected it to be a part-time thing. You offer a range of packages and services for lots of different events, which are your most popular? We offer venue dressing, event planning and floristry. We also decorate venues and houses at Christmas, which has really become popular in the last three to four years. We decorate lots of large Wirral and Cheshire homes, it’s fun. We once designed and decorated a Christmas 54

element and seeing the vision unfold on the day.

Any other high-profile clients you can tell us about? Yes, many. We planned footballer Emile Heskey’s wedding from start to finish. We also worked with funnyman Jason Manford on his wedding at Shrigley Hall, and comedienne Sarah Millican’s wedding at Tatton Park – we did her birthday not long after too!

Any you’re not a big fan of? I don’t dislike anything, but I don’t like unexpected curveballs, or when there’s pressure on time. This rarely happens, as we pride ourselves on planning and organisation, it’s what makes us good at what we do.

Which venues are particular favourites? We do Manchester United’s match day flowers. We also dress The Lowry and Manchester Town Hall. For the last two years, we have decorated Chester Zoo and Malmaison Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham at Christmas. You sound so busy. Do you ever get any free time? There’s never a dull moment. Once all the summer events have finished, all focus goes into planning for Christmas decor, as that’s becoming increasingly sought after. Which event do you love most? I love unique, big budget, weddings and also home Christmas styling, as this is when we can be most creative. We love the design

Finally, any do’s and don’ts for event planning? Never cut corners, which can be hard if you are on a budget, but it’s best to avoid this where possible. Also, never underestimate time and always set timescales. It goes fast, and people often say afterwards they wished that they got us to do more of the details. If you’re working with a company, definitely find someone reputable and who you feel comfortable with. We offer one-on-one consultations, and we take the time to design things with specific requirements and budgets in mind, no matter how long it takes – which is why clients have confidence in us! By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar

FLINT+FLINT AT HARVEY NICHOLS The concept of Flint+Flint is different to your usual spa, which is why they call it an ‘Anti-Spa’. There’s no gloss, no white, no chrome, and no wood. Instead, dark and moody, hot neons and textured surfaces, where highly skilled aestheticians, nurses and doctors recommend and deliver a wide range of treatments, from relaxing facials to the more serious stuff, like acne or scarring treatments. There is also, waxing, laser hair removal, injectables, oxygen and Dermapen treatments.

A range of bespoke facials use Flint+Flint skincare products to invigorate and repair your skin and leave you with a renewed, healthy complexion. I was invited along to try the COMCIT facial by Crystal Clear, which combines Cryo Oxygen, Microchanneling and Collagen Induction Therapy to combat ageing skin, acne, or to provide an instant lift. COMCIT, the very latest in anti-ageing technology, has four simultaneous modes of action and is designed to stimulate collagen production. This skin rejuvenation facial offers instant visible results without surgery, and results improve even more after four to 14 days, once the collagen is produced. How does COMCIT work? Cryo Oxygen A CryoProbe discharges cold oxygen through an internal peltier system and onto the skin, without any feeling of discomfort. The cold oxygen rapidly cools the skin and stimulates the micro-circulation, positively increasing blood supply and thus providing nutrients necessary for the stimulation of fibroblasts required for collagen production.

Microchanneling Roller A Microchanneling Roller is moved over the surface of the skin to create microscopic pinpricks and induce controlled microtrauma to the skin. These pinpricks create columns/pathways within the epidermal junction, which encourage the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, and allow for the product to penetrate into the skin. Product infusion The COMCIT serum, packed with active ingredients, penetrates the columns/ pathways and drives ingredients down into the deeper layers of skin, where the promotion of new collagen growth and great skin health begins. The pinpricks close almost immediately as the skin heals and the skin becomes, thicker, plumper and more youthful. The COMCIT facial at Flint + Flint Manchester, Harvey Nichols costs £135 for a single treatment, or £325 for a course of 3 treatments. READER OFFER Try your first treatment at half price. NEARLY 1 IN 5 OF MANCHESTER’S EYE PROBLEMS ARE DIAGNOSED TOO LATE TO TREAT Research reveals 9.8 million Brits risk losing their sight after shunning eye tests A new study reveals 19% of adults in Manchester risk losing their eyesight by not having regular eye tests. The Vision of Britain report, commissioned by Optegra Eye Health Care, shows an alarming percentage of Manchester’s eye problems are left too late to treat, leaving 9.8 million of us living in fear of losing our sight. THE STUDY OF 2,000 PEOPLE REVEALED: • 49% of first time patients need vision correction • Nearly one in ten (8%) require glasses or treatment, despite thinking their eyesight was fine • 1 in 4 mistakenly believe wearing glasses will make their eyesight worse Despite shying away from regular eye tests the report showed a whopping 79% of

adults in Manchester desire 20:20 perfect vision, with 58% valuing their eyesight above any other sense. To help achieve perfect vision, eye health specialist Optegra Eye Health Care is launching a new 20 page report full of advice on day to day eye care, from identifying vision problems in children, myth-busting, to the latest medical advances to treat eye conditions. The report is available free at optegra.com/visionofbritain. Caroline McHugh, Hospital Director for Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester, commented: “Without regular eye examinations, problems are being left undiagnosed and untreated which can lead to serious vision damage. One such condition that is often detected late – yet remains one of the most treatable once diagnosed – is cataract. This is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, affecting an estimated 20 million. Less obvious conditions include

age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma – which if left undiagnosed and untreated can dramatically increase the chance of permanent blindness. Caroline McHugh concludes: “It is vital for everyone to have regular eye checks, even if they suspect nothing is wrong with their eyesight. By giving up just 20-30 minutes of your time once every two years, you can potentially save your vision.” From vision correction options (laser eye surgery and lens replacement) through to medical treatments for conditions such as cataract, AMD, floaters, retinal tears, glaucoma, Consultant Ophthalmologists at Optegra Eye Hospital Manchester offer treatments for the A to Z of eye health conditions.

To find out more you can attend a free open evening at the hospital. A free consultation is available for laser eye and lens replacement surgery. DR JOHN FOX PATRICk CLAFFEy Owner of Rxgym, West Didsbury

How do I lose my gut? I believe we should all follow a strength and conditioning programme that is constantly varied and involves highintensity, functional training. The exercises should be scalable and easily modified to suit ANY person wanting to improve their fitness level. Weight, reps, times, etc. can all be reduced or increased, or an alternative exercise or activity can be used alongside fuelling the body with a healthy, well-balanced diet, which is very important. Train hard, eat well. What’s the best diet? First of all, I don’t believe in dieting, as it implies that you eat well for a short period of time. I believe in performance nutrition. Try to eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and some fruit. Stick to only a little starch and avoid sugar. Remember to keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.

Should I take a protein supplement? If you do not get enough protein in your daily diet, then yes, to perform and recover well, you should consider taking a protein supplement. Within 30 minutes of finishing a workout, you could consider taking a recovery supplement. The objective of post-workout nutrition is to optimise recovery by replenishing glycogen stores and providing protein to begin tissue repair. I do recommend fish oil, as your body needs Omega 3 fatty acids for all of life’s important functions; from thinking to tissue repair. Why did you set up Rxgym? I set up Rxgym to provide its members with quality coaches and proven methods. I have worked in the industry for a long time and I was bored of soulless gyms that did not care about their members and whether or not they even turned up. So, each Rxgym member receives a monthly personal training session as part of their membership. This helps members get to where they want to be, and hopefully keeps it interesting, which is what it’s all about after all.

A Consultant Clinical Psychologist across both independent and NHS services since 2002, Dr John Fox is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and has been an active researcher in eating disorders and mental health, with over 60 research papers and one edited book. WHAT ARE EATING DISORDERS? Eating disorders are a rare but serious mental health conditions. There are three main types of eating disorders; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is hallmarked by being severely underweight, whilst Bulimia Nervosa (BN) occurs in people who are normal weight. BN is associated with episodes of bingeing and vomiting, whilst binge eating disorder is indicated by episodes of bingeing without any attempts to remove food afterwards (e.g. vomiting). All of these disorders are associated with poor body image. WHAT ARE THE BEST TREATMENTS FOR EATING DISORDERS? For people who have not had treatment before, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the best approach. It is practical, as it focuses on thoughts and behaviours around food and body shape. Research has shown that it has the best efficacy, but it does not suit everyone. In my experience, another good option is cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), as it helps with the underlying issues, as well as the difficulties with food/body shape. WHAT IS COGNITIVE ANALYTIC THERAPY (CAT)? CAT is a form of therapy that differs from other established therapies, such as CBT. It looks at the relationships in a person’s life (i.e. with themselves and others) and investigates the origins of these experiences, often from childhood and early life. It is non-judging/blaming approach and a good treatment for eating disorders, depression and relationship difficulties.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

How to avoid wrist injuries

Every year, as we head towards summer and the sun begins to make an appearance, there is a surge in the number of men, women and children who dust off their rackets and take to the court. During these months, hand and wrist experts experience a huge increase in 'fair weather' tennis players coming to see them with injuries, many of which are avoidable. Although tennis elbow is arguably the most well-known related ailment, wrist and shoulder injuries from playing tennis are more commonly reported. Mike Hayton and Dan Lewindon have worked together in elite sports injury prevention and management for the last 10 years, and are happy to share some practical advice on how best to avoid tennis injuries. Below are a few simple things to consider before you put on your whites, which will help to minimise your chance of causing damage: GRADUALLY INCREASE YOUR TIME ON THE COURT Many keen tennis players participate all year round and, in doing so, are in great shape physically. However, those who only tend to play when the sun shines should gradually increase their playing time and frequency over a few weeks rather than going straight into a five-set tie-break with the expectation of being able to resume play the next day.

WARM UP We all lead busy lives and are often guilty of arriving at the court straight from work or the school run, and diving straight into a match. Try and spare some time before you play to warm up your hands and wrists. With regards to your wrists, try and move them as though you are throwing a dart back and forth; this is a more natural line of motion around which the wrist moves. Gentle rolling of the wrists will complete the pre-tennis warm-up period. Spend the first five to 10 minutes of your session gently increasing the intensity of your play and, crucially, warming-up the rest of your body to avoid injury.

problems and may even result in the handle leaving the hand, which could cause injury to bystanders. TECHNIQUE As with all sports that involve technique, it’s best to seek expert tuition sooner rather than later. Poor handle gripping or an abnormal swing can have a knock-on effect in the chain of movement in the upper limb. AVOID RISKS AND PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN LISTEN TO YOUR BODY – if it hurts when you play, stop and seek specialist help. Pain along the inner border of the wrist when the palm is facing upwards may indicate tendinitis. This usually occurs in the non-dominant wrist of a double-backhanded player. If you do experience this type of pain, please stop and seek expert advice, as rest in the early stages is the best way of avoiding longerterm problems.

EQUIPMENT Technique and racket weight, grip size and composition can all contribute to injury. Have someone qualified, preferably a tennis coach, check out your equipment. A racket that is too heavy may cause problems for your wrists. String composition is controversial, but certainly faulty or poorlytensioned strings are a common cause of wrist discomfort. Synthetic polyethylene strings are thought to be stiffer than hybrid, and natural strings need replacing far more often than you may think. It is recommended that polyethylene strings shouldn’t be used by beginners or anyone with arm issues.

Mike Hayton is an Orthopaedic Consultant specialising in hand and wrist problems. He has an NHS practice at Wrightington Hospital and consults privately at a number of healthcare providers across the region, including HCA UK's The Wilmslow Hospital, The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance, The Alexandra Hospital, and Spire Manchester.

Also check your tennis handle grip, as it should be clean and in good condition. A worn or sloppy surface could cause

ASK THE EXPERTS What are the latest trends in property in the North West? The residential sector is highly prominent in the region given the widely reported issues with supply, particularly the dominance of the push towards the private rented sector in major conurbations. Many schemes are gaining approval and it will be interesting to see how they are received. In particular, Greater Manchester continues to flourish across all areas of the market, with many transformational schemes for the region underway or in planning. How has Brexit affected the property market? After an initial pause for breath, the market has remained largely buoyant. General socio-economic developments are a cause for a concern and the true impact of the triggering of Article 50 is unlikely to be felt for some time yet. Much will depend on the type of deal that Britain can negotiate for the exit… interesting times to come! What tip would you offer to anyone looking to invest in property in the North West? The mantra of keeping it simple is probably quite important and being able to put yourself in the shoes of a potential tenant.Of course, price and yield potential are both important, but if you want to catch the attention of renters, it’s all about good connectivity, access to varied and high quality amenities and areas with plans for wider regeneration.

My ex-husband is Spanish and talks about moving back to Spain permanently. Things aren’t great between us and I’m worried he might disappear and take the kids with him one day. What are my options? Experience tells us that preventative action is better than trying to deal with the situation after the event. A Prohibited Steps Order can prohibit your ex-spouse from removing the children from England and Wales. Where there is an imminent threat of removal, a port alert or an order for the seizure of your ex-partner’s and the children’s passports should also be considered. My ex-partner lives 20 miles from me in Stoke and sees the children regularly. I really want to move back to Edinburgh, my home town. A friend says there may be a job for me. What happens if my ex objects to the move? If you cannot agree either between yourselves, with the help of solicitors or a mediator, you can make an application to the Court for a Specific Issue Order in which you ask the Court to grant permission to move, even if your ex-partner continues to oppose it.

What size will I be after breast aaugmentation surgery? Breast size after enhancement varies from patient to patient. Using a sizing kit, 3D Crisalix technology and virtual reality goggles, I can help patients visualise how implants will look. Preoperative photos of patients of a similar size can be a useful way of seeing the range of results that can be achieved. Can I combine breast surgery with abdominal surgery? Increasingly, patients are requesting breast and abdominal surgery at the same time – a ‘mummy makeover’. Abdominoplasty, with or without liposuction, and breast augmentation, with or without a breast lift, are the most common requests. Fat taken from the abdomen can be transferred to the breasts instead of implants for those who want a subtle volume enhancement. Finding a surgeon and a provider that can perform this surgery in less than three hours, and can also provide suitable preoperative and aftercare, is essential. Why don’t you use drains following abdominoplasty? I’ve found that patients can recover more quickly and easily without. The drains are uncomfortable, can be painful to remove, and can be a source of infection.

THE BEST BANK It is staggering to think that the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ lent/gifted over £5 billion worth of capital to help loved ones get on the property ladder in 2016! This places parents, friends and grandparents amongst the top 10 mortgage lenders in the UK and enables over 300,000 individuals to become new property owners* Additionally, many parents and grandparents are saving for their little ones’ futures – whether the goal is to help with university fees or to raise money for a car or deposit on their first home. Nature has programmed us to protect our children from risk but, because of our naturally protective and defensive instincts, we often make poor judgement calls as to where money is saved. For instance, saving money into a building society or bank deposit account whose rates of interest are below the current rate of inflation. (CPI-1.8% source ONS Jan 2017) Such an investment strategy could be a very inefficient way to nurture your children’s financial futures. At Kellands, even with these smaller

savings, we manage the money in the same way as the larger portfolios of our wealthiest families; we adopt the same pragmatic approach. We start with considering the objective of the saving and then build a taxefficient solution. Quite often it may just be as simple as investing in a Junior ISA, but there are many more options, dependent on the size of the investment, time frames, targeted returns, parental control and appetite for risk. The underlying investment strategy is also very important and, for those who are prepared to step away from deposit-based savings and invest for growth over the longer term, there are some exciting opportunities. Typically, at Kellands, when we look at longer-term monthly savings, we try to identify investment funds which are perhaps less focused on what is happening in the world today, but are instead focused on what it will look like when our children grow up. It is important to consider what investment themes, sectors and world markets will dominate in the future. How and

what new technologies will appear and displace old, such as; battery powered cars, biotechnologies, genetics, robotic and automation companies, to name but a few. There are many factors to consider, but with a little help from loved ones and a good strategy, the future can be a whole lot brighter!

ASK THE EXPERTS My child is stressed about exams, what are ways of coping? Stress motivates success. If we regard exams as challenges, we are less likely to feel overwhelmed. A revision plan of action, which incorporates breaks and rewards, will instil a sense of control and prevent negative stress. What about panicking in the exams? Pupils speak of ‘going blank’ in exams. When we go blank, stress chemicals signal to our brain that it needs to respond to an emergency. The unhelpful result is that the brain’s rational part closes down to make way for the primitive part to attend to the ‘emergency’ with a fight/flight response. Deep breathing, remaining grounded and developing positive self-talk as the stress level decreases will help recover concentration. What can parents do to help? Be an advisor/encourager rather than controlling parent. Pupils need to take ownership of their preparation/approach to become effective, independent learners. Listening to them speak about what they have learned, or testing them is supportive but not prescriptive. For some pupils, being encouraged to take breaks and recover perspective is just as important as being spurred on to revise.

Preparing, planning and protecting your estate What happens if I don’t have any plans in place? If you die without leaving a valid Will, you are treated as having died intestate. This means that your estate will be divided in accordance with the law. This may mean that people who you don’t wish to inherit from your estate may do so. It’s not a certainty that your husband/wife/civil partner will inherit all your estate. What grounds could there be for my Will to be contested? Wills can be contested in certain circumstances. There are limited categories of people who can claim against your estate if they feel they haven’t been sufficiently provided for. Your Will could be challenged if you did not have the requisite capacity to create a Will and that you lacked knowledge and approval of the contents. Whilst there is nothing that you can do to prevent a claim being brought against your estate, it’ll be harder for a claim to be brought if you take specialist legal advice from a qualified solicitor. They will be able to express your wishes in your own words and put plans in place to ensure they’re met.

I have lost my front tooth, which is knocking my confidence. When can I have an implant to replace it? In many cases, our implants can be placed on the same day as a tooth is removed. We can often place an implant, and also a temporary tooth, on the day it is extracted. However, this depends on careful assessment using our three-dimensional scans to check out the patient’s bone health. My gums bleed when I brush, is this something I need to be really worried about? Bleeding when you are brushing teeth at home, or when the dentist or hygienist probes around a tooth, is a key indication that you have periodontal disease. This is more commonly known as gum disease. If left untreated, the eventual outcome is gum recession, bone loss and eventual tooth loss. The sooner it is treated, the better the chance of saving the tooth or gum. Here’s a top tip with regards to this – make the hygienist your new best friend! I have a gum boil by the side of my tooth, what is it? A gum boil is a sign of infection trying to drain. The cause is infection of the root or gum. This needs treatment even if not painful - leaving it will lead to more damage. Treatments range from cleaning the gum pocket to root canal to removal as a last resort. Your dentist will take an xray to help diagnose the type of infection present.

STOP THIS HAPPENING TO yOU… The introduction of the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) has finally given homeowners the opportunity to leave up to £1m tax-free to their families on death. However, what seems a simple addition to the Inheritance Tax regulations is actually far more complex than it first looks. Foresight Wealth Strategists have run a successful series of RNRB Briefings, highlighting how the Residence Nil Rate Band works to fully benefit from this new allowance. We are delighted to announce our next set of events. We will be running morning sessions at 10:30am and evening sessions at 7:30pm at the following venues: Tuesday 13th June The Bulls Head, Wicker Lane, Hale Barns. Wednesday, 28th June The Alderley Edge Hotel & Restaurant, Macclesfield Rd, Alderley Edge Thursday, 6th July The Cottons Hotel & Spa, Manchester Road, Knutsford. Demand is again expected to be strong for these events – so early booking is advised. Sessions will last one and half hours and refreshments and snacks will be served and information packs provided to take away. Inheritance Tax is pernicious and few people are comfortable in their estate being liable in this tax. Make sure you are in the best position to take full advantage of the new allowance offer. Local charity pledges $1million in aid to Yemen Othman says: “The crisis in Yemen has been forgotten about or ignored completely. We believe this is because the conflict has not generated a huge amount of refugees coming to Europe and there is the misperception amongst the public that it’s only a regional crisis. To disregard what is happening in Yemen as something insignificant is turning a blind eye to the escalating humanitarian emergency.

Human Appeal, a humanitarian aid organisation based in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, are pledging $1 million to help with the planned humanitarian response to the conflict that has ravaged Yemen. Human Appeal made the pledge at an aid summit in Geneva, which brought together governments and aid organisations in an attempt to support what the United Nations (UN) has described as ‘the world’s largest humanitarian crisis’. Human Appeal has also announced that they will be providing emergency assistance to hospitalised children and their mothers at Al Jumhori Public Hospital in Sana’a. Human Appeal will also supply medicines, materials to conduct medical assessments, and hygiene and nutritional supplies to the hospital. Human Appeal will also repair and conduct maintenance of the hospital building. Othman Moqbel, Human Appeal’s CEO, says: “This commitment of $1 million to the aid response, as well as our work helping in a hospital that is struggling to operate, shows that as Human Appeal grows into becoming one of the world’s leading humanitarian aid organisations, our determination to save lives grows with us. “The Al Jumhori Public Hospital is struggling to cope with the huge number of patients from the ongoing conflict, a severe

lack of financial resources and proper hygiene practices and supplies. Our work here will support the food and medical assistance we have already provided across Yemen since the conflict began in 2015. Human Appeal is planning to expand its activities and operations in different sectors such as WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), food security and health and nutrition. We are hoping to reach the most vulnerable and conflict-affected people.” In February, a survey commissioned by Human Appeal and conducted by YouGov revealed that 51% of the UK public did not know that there was an ongoing internal conflict in Yemen. The poll, which presented 2,171 people with a list of 16 countries and asked them to identify those they believed were ‘currently involved in an ongoing armed conflict’: • Just under half (49%) of all UK adults are aware that Yemen is currently involved in ongoing armed conflict • This compares to over four in five (84%) UK adults who are aware that Syria is currently involved in ongoing armed conflict • Just over a third (37%) of 18-24 year olds in the UK are aware that Yemen is currently involved in ongoing armed conflict

“Over the past two years, 44,000 people have been killed or injured and more than three million have been displaced because of the conflict. That’s 75 deaths or injuries every day. The UN estimates 18.8 million people are in need of humanitarian aid or protection out of a total population of 27.4 million. “Food insecurity is high, with an estimated 14 million affected, and about the same amount need safe drinking water and basic healthcare, as only 45 per cent of health facilities are functioning. “1,000 children are dying every week from preventable diseases like diarrhoea and malnutrition. Health services are collapsing and public hospitals are not able to provide sufficient care due to lack of financial resources and an increasing number of people in need. Some eight million children are in need of basic healthcare.” Since the start of the conflict on March 19th 2011, Human Appeal has: • Provided food parcels to thousands of families • Provided clean water to 37,500 people • Conducted dengue fever prevention projects • Provided meat to 800 families • Provided blankets to 280 households • Provided clothing to 480 vulnerable children

In conversation with… Clair Jaquiss

The first female vicar at All Saints Church, Hale Barns

Clair Jaquiss, who you might be surprised to discover isn’t French, despite her wonderful name, became vicar at All Saints Church in November 2016, and has since been dedicated to the “common quest for peace”.

By Emily Fitzgibbons

She says everyone has been supportive of her in the new role: “People have been worshiping in the area for 500 years, and I’m honoured to be the first female vicar in all that time. Everyone has been so welcoming.” Having been born in Wilmslow, and moving to Hale not long after, it is safe to say she truly knows the area well. Clair first explored the idea of faith in Saint David’s Church, which is now a local Islamic Cultural Centre, around the age of 10. She is married to Kevin, who is a local Methodist preacher, and has three grown-up daughters and four grandchildren. Before becoming vicar, Clair was an assistant priest, while in paid employment as a producer for the BBC. She still presents Prayer for the Day and Daily Service on Radio 4 and Pause For Thought on Radio 2 from time to time.

Outside her role as parish priest, Clair has many interests. She says: “I enjoy singing with a choir in Knutsford, and I really try and stay healthy, so I’m often out and about running.” Something else important to Clair, along with everyone else at All Saints, is building friendships with different faith groups: “I am eager to strengthen these relationships,” explains Clair. “I was thrilled to be invited to the opening of the new synagogue on Wicker Lane. At All Saints, we are lucky to have a window that looks out onto Hale Road. In times of crisis, like the terrorist attacks, we light a candle in that window as a sign that we are praying for peace, and around it are the words for peace in many different languages.” Clair said the remembrance service last November was a personal highlight for her; over 300 people from a variety of different faith groups gathered at the memorial to pay their respects. Boys from Saint Ambrose

school also read out the names of the fallen on the memorial – young men who were probably only a little older than them. However, the Easter services, which take place on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, mean the most to Clair in a spiritual sense. She says: “On Holy Saturday, we light and bless the new fire in a wheelbarrow, and light the Easter candle from it. It’s an ancient way of proclaiming the light of Christ, and the wheelbarrow is our individual and unique way of keeping everything safe. On Easter Sunday, singing and dancing is part of the service as we celebrate Christ risen from the dead.” And Clair’s most important advice to readers? "Love your neighbour and be true to yourself."

The Upper Sixth pupil from Heaton Moor is one of just four players selected from across the country, and starts his career as a professional rugby player in July. He has a busy year ahead with both national and international tournaments lined up. After being selected in a 23-man training squad, following an Academy weekend at the end of April, he was picked for the England IPF squad for the Greene King IPA 7s, held at Bury St Edmunds last month.

George, who has been training with Sale Sharks’ first team following strong displays for their under-18 and Jets sides, will look to continue his 15-a-side career and start a university degree after his England 7s contract ends. While at Stockport Grammar School, George has enjoyed great success as 1st xV captain – leading his team to the 2016 Cheshire Cup Final at the 12,000-capacity AJ Bell Stadium, winning the Cheshire 7s, and reaching the Bowl Final of the National Schools 7s at Rosslyn Park.

Withington Girls’ School film premiere

Dr Diana Abram (née Almond), a Class of 1949 leaver, sharing her memories of her wartime evacuation and her time at the school with two WGS volunteer interviewers.

Withington Girls’ School (WGS) has unveiled a Heritage Lottery-funded film depicting life at the school over the last 75 years, as seen through the eyes of former pupils. The hour-long oral histories documentary Now and Then, which has just enjoyed its inaugural screening, was the culmination of a year-long project managed by School Archivist Hannah Brown, with

contributions by more than a hundred WGS girls, staff and alumnae volunteers. 25 alumnae, some of whom attended Withington during the outbreak of WW2, participated in a series of on-camera interviews, leading viewers on a journey through the decades – from the evacuation of pupils and teachers at the outbreak of the war, through to the post-war fifties, and then into the more relaxed

sixties and seventies. The film shows the enhancements to school buildings and facilities across the years, and brings viewers bang up to date with the Class of 2017 and an interview with current Head Girl, Emily Herbert. Speaking about Now and Then, WGS Headmistress Sarah Haslam said: “We are extremely grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting our first oral histories project, which has resulted in an inspiring and joyful film to keep for posterity. It serves as a refreshing reminder that the core values that were so important to our founders on opening the school in 1890 – and of which we are all still so very proud – have endured through many decades. There is a very strong sense that the Withington spirit, which underpins our ethos today, has been embedded through the years.”

National engineering success at AESG

The Lower Sixth Engineering team at Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) visited the University of Liverpool for the Engineering Education Scheme Celebration and Assessment Day. This was the final stage of the six-month project they had been working on – a playground clock and traffic light system that will be installed in one 72

June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

of the playgrounds at Lancasterian Specialist School in West Didsbury. In the morning, alongside eighteen other engineering teams, they were required to give a 15-minute presentation to a panel of eight senior engineers, who were assessing their project, and also had to complete a 10minute question and answer session. The girls spoke about their project with great enthusiasm and impressed the judges in all aspects of the assessment. For the remainder of the morning, they explained their project to visitors to their display stand, including the other engineering teams and mentors. The afternoon session involved speaking to invited guests, including parents, so they could see the results of their hard work, and attending a graduation ceremony, where awards

were given out. The team were in shock when they were announced as winners of the Steve Nash Memorial Award for Innovation. The clock will be used by the children of Lancasterian Specialist School to recognise when it is time to tidy up and line up at the appropriate times during a break. Due to the physical and learning difficulties of the children, and in order for them to access the information, the clock needed to be multi-sensory. The design team created a cartoon lion with a friendly face and included push buttons that allow student interaction. The team – consisting of Jess A, Bianca B and Nina F – now plan on entering their project into the regional round of the Big Bang Competition in July, so fingers crossed for further success!

Aspiring medical students from The Manchester Grammar School have been nationally recognised Aizaz Chaudhry, Anthony Le, Vikram Mitra and Rayyan Nehal from The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) have been nationally recognised after devising a web-based application that could save the NHS up to £5m a year. The four boys attended the third annual Manchester Medx Conference held at Citylabs 1.0 and, during one of the sessions, came up with an innovative way to overcome the problem of patients not taking their medications, which costs the NHS millions every year. Without any prior planning, the boys devised a web-based app called MedCloud, which would allow patients and GPs access to a platform that would show how often a patient takes their medication, whether they need their medication to be reviewed, and whether the patient has taken the medication at all. Patients would supply their own information to a shared server, which GPs

could access, and if patients fail to upload their information, automatic reminders would be sent. In cases where patients require additional support, families would also have access to the information. So impressive was the boys’ unique idea, a judging panel awarded it ‘best concept of the day’, defeating solutions put forward by practicing doctors, consultants and health care professionals, all with years of medical experience, making the boys’ achievement even more impressive. The application could save the NHS up to £5m a year in wasted prescriptions. Not only was the boys’ concept singled out as the best, but Aizaz, who presented the idea, was given an additional prize for best presentation and received a 3D skull, which was printed during the conference to demonstrate the practical effects of 3D printing technology within the medical industry. The team were also awarded amazon.com vouchers.

King’s U11 rugby

The King's School Junior Department U11 rugby team has recorded an unbeaten season, winning all 15 of their fixtures. In what is being regarded by the King's rugby staff as one of the best pools of all-round young talent in recent years, players dismantled their closest rivals with 50 points winning margins against Manchester Grammar, Stockport Grammar and Cheadle Hulme School. Captain and playmaker Ollie Davies controlled the side from fly-half with his mercurial running and handling skills, setting the tone for a fluid nine-man game. The powerhouse forward platform of Ben Chong, Ollie Jones, Billy Bridgewater, Noah Wolstenholme and Callum Chopping constantly provided top-quality ball for live-wire scrum-half Ollie Carter, with

lightning-quick three-quarters Zac Wright, Edward Roden, Christian Tattum, James Hartley, and top scorer Billy Birkett finding the gaps. King's Head of Junior PE Joe Walker said: “The last unbeaten U11 Junior side

went on to be unbeaten at under-13 and 14 level. With strong players joining in September, as the boys transfer to the Senior Division, we expect them to become a superb first xV and hopefully realise their full potential.” June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Aspiring author, aged five, wins regional writing competition Five-year-old Zainah Ali from Ashton-under-Lyne has been named as the best writer in My First Story, the Young Writers’ regional creative writing competition. The competition received over 9,000 entries from school children nationwide, and a selection of the best entries is now featured in the regional My First Story 2017 books. Zainah started studying at Manchester High School for Girls’ Preparatory Department last autumn and she has taken to school life with great enthusiasm. The young author was very excited to hear that her story had been chosen as the best in the Manchester and Merseyside regions, saying: “I was so happy and surprised. My story in the book is about a greedy witch who doesn’t know what Christmas is and wants to keep all Santa’s presents to herself. It was a fun story to write and has a happy ending.” Zainah loves school: “My favourite part is working with numbers in our maths class,” she says. “I also like playtime. I would like to write more stories and I think I am going to write one tomorrow!” Mrs Emma Nash, Head of the Preparatory Department at Manchester High School for Girls, is extremely proud of the young writer’s success: “Our girls wrote some lovely stories, and we were so proud that Zainah’s was highlighted in this way. It is fantastic to see that our creative approach to writing is inspiring many budding authors throughout our infant classes.”

Silver for Tom Ford on full GB debut Making his debut for the Senior GB rowing squad, Tom was in the stroke seat at the front of the boat. From there, he dictated the stroke rate and drove the crew off to a blistering start. At the 500m mark, three crews were neck and neck in the medal positions, before the British started to ease into the lead. They maintained their slender advantage for most of the rest of the race, but were unable to hold off a late charge from the Netherlands crew. It was a performance full of promise for Tom and the GB crew, who are at the start of the Olympic cycle, and the only slight disappointment is that, only 24 hours previously, they’d come out on top in an exhibition race against the same three crews. Former Grange School student Tom Ford was part of a Men’s Eight crew that secured a silver medal last week, following an exciting race at the World Rowing Championships in Belgrade.

“We are so proud of Tom’s achievements,” says The Grange School’s Head of Rowing, Graham Jump. “He started his journey in our Junior School, took his opportunity in the Senior School, continued his passion at University, and was rewarded today.”

Gadgets THE RISE OF THE MACHINES

This issue, we’re looking at automation. No need to worry about Terminators just yet, but certainly automation and even artificial intelligence are now mainstream, with hardware and software that can learn and adapt to any application – from delivery drones that can drop off your pizza quicker, to factories that can speed up production without any human intervention. Here are four examples of clever machines that can make our lives easier by automating everyday things.

Robot lawnmower Not all dads enjoy mowing the lawn as much as I do. If you do, however, enjoy chucking money around, then this is the toy for you. You can control and monitor it from anywhere in the world via a mobile app, and it’s smart enough to navigate complex and uneven lawn shapes, recharge and empty itself, and generally get on with the job while you do other things. RRP £3,100, Husqvarna

Robot vacuum cleaner On a similar principle to the robot lawnmower above, the Roomba is smart enough to work out the most efficient route around your carpets, avoiding obstacles and stairs, emptying and recharging itself, and generally keeping on top of your vacuuming while you get on with something more fun. Unlike the lawnmower, however, it’s seriously cheap. RRP from £200, iRobot Roomba

Follow-me drone These things are amazing. If you like outdoor sports and selfies, this combines the two. With a wearable GPS receiver and a very quick set-up, this clever flying camera can learn to follow you wherever you go, so there’s always a high-resolution camera on you to capture your every move. Until recently, this technology was prohibitively expensive, but now you can have your own for not much more than £400. SimToo

By Oliver Chesher

Automatic pet feeder OK, this is hardly artificial intelligence, but anyone who remembers Doc Brown’s dog-feeding machine from the intro sequence of Back to the Future will appreciate the idea. Modern versions are less messy than Doc’s and benefit from portability. Useful for anyone who travels with their pet, or wants to make sure he/she gets regular, fresh feeds whatever the owner’s movements. This one can even be personalised with a recorded message to your animal, so it feels familiar. £25, Pet Planet June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

BACK TO BASICS

By Oliver Chesher

This time, we’re doing an ‘entry-level special’, in celebration of manufacturers’ increasingly impressive efforts at the ultra-competitive base model end of the market. When I first started to really devour car magazines and shows in the 80s and 90s, the common wisdom was that – just like you should never order the cheapest bottle off a wine list on a date – you should avoid the cheapest model in a range like the plague. Even desirable German saloons were nigh on impossible to sell in their bottom-of-the-range guise; many had wind-up windows, nasty cloth upholstery and (horrors) disproportionately small steel wheels with plastic hubcaps. Car culture has come a long way since then. Carmakers now use marketing language like ‘pure’ and ‘minimal’ to sell the attractions of their most uncomplicated and value-for-money offerings, and buyers are no longer embarrassed to be seen in them. The Mercedes-Benz-owned Smart is a case in point. Take the new smart pure (note the lack of capital letters in the brand name – very clean and contemporary), which starts at under £10,000 and lives up to its name, with a delightfully simple 1.0-litre engine, manual gearbox and understated black cloth interior. Yes, there are obviously cheaper cars you could buy – either from the likes of Dacia and Suzuki or a world of choice on the second-hand market. But for this price, the combination of Mercedes-Benz engineering, super fuel economy, and a surprising list of standard equipment, including remote locking and heated door mirrors, means the smart pure is likely to be a popular choice.

June/July 2017 | salutions.co.uk

Meanwhile, a bit higher up the Mercedes range, there’s still some ‘entry-level’ action to be had. The SLC, replacement to the SLK that spawned a thousand hard-top roadsters in the late 90s, is today a bona fide rival to the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 and Audi TT – all of which can be had in ultra-high performance guises and priced (pardon the pun) through the roof. But, for not much more than £30k, you can now get an SLC with a small petrol engine, 156 horsepower and manual gearbox. Plenty enough to have fun with in a small open-top sports car. Unlike some of its predecessors from generations gone by, it doesn’t scream ‘bottom of the range’ either; gone are the tiny wheels that made a car look cheap from a mile off and, while the simple engine and gearbox keep the price down, the standard kit list hasn’t had to be too compromised. You still get 18-inch alloy wheels, Artico seats, Active Brake Assist, cruise control, air conditioning, sports suspension and sports braking system.
