Editor’s letter
It’s been a while since we last spoke and so much has happened in a matter of a few months. Who’d have thought that 2020 would take the ‘happy’ away from new year.
At Salution’s HQ, we are, most of the time, frantically busy, but September to December for us is especially manic with events, charity balls and more, – and you can’t move in our office without tripping over ball prizes. However, this year, I can honestly say that all I have in my diary is zoom meetings. I have just come off a press day zoom meeting with Next. Lovely to catch up with everyone and see what exciting items I can buy from Next this season, but I would much rather be in London at a beautiful venue, walking around room sets and catching up with our friends from other publications, but this is the ‘new normal’ and well done to Next for a fabulous showing. I’ll be off to Next Handforth Dean as soon as this magazine has gone to print!
Because this year has seen so many changes for many businesses, we decided we would put lockdown to good use and refresh our own offering. So, behind the scenes, we have some talented people improving our website and we now offer animated video, which can be used on your social media. There have been some exciting changes to our magazines too. In addition to Didsbury Magazine, Hale&Bowdon Magazine and MediaCity Magazine, we have introduced five new covers in Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Wilmslow, Bramhall and Knutsford. The Big Escape Live announces Manchester outdoor event
An interactive outdoor escape experience launched in Manchester just weeks before lockdown is going live in the city – with free tickets on offer for NHS workers. The Big Escape Live has been created so that hundreds can play the GPSactivated game while still following social distancing rules. The event scheduled for October will see groups of up to six people playing against each other and there will be a leaderboard updated in real time, giving those taking part a competitive edge. The gaming experience sees the city centre turned into a giant playground,
with teams solving puzzles, cracking codes and completing challenges to take down Big Al’s casino in a classic heist.

The British Heart Foundation opens new shop in Manchester
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has opened its new Manchester shop and is calling on residents to support it in raising funds for life-saving research into heart and circulatory diseases. The charity says it’s “thrilled” to be opening the new shop, located at 51 Piccadilly, as it seeks to recover from the devastating impact
of the Covid-19 crisis on its income. The BHF hopes the local community will show their support by donating goodquality items or popping in to snap up a bargain. Following the temporary closure of the BHF’s 750 shops and stores across the UK, the charity estimates the crisis has been costing it around £10 million a month, which it fears will reduce its future funding for research and scientific breakthroughs. The BHF Manchester shop has measures in place to keep staff, volunteers and customers safe. Customers will be asked to social distance on the shop floor, all staff and volunteers have been provided with protective equipment, and a contact-
free donation point has been set up. All donations given to the BHF will be rested for 48 hours before being placed on the shop floor. Just £16 worth of your donations can support an early-career scientist in carrying out an hour’s research and £25 gives a researcher an hour’s access to equipment. If your donations raised £100, this would fund a DNA extraction kit to identify genes linked to heart and circulatory diseases. The new shop is located at 51 Piccadilly, Manchester M1 2AP. Sewing to say ‘Thank You’
Matthew, now 28, were supported by the hospice for fourteen years. Whilst furloughed, Tracey started making face coverings as part of the Big Community Sew – aimed at uniting millions of UK sewers to make face coverings for their local communities throughout the pandemic.
She then came up with the idea of putting the face coverings into their own scrub bags to minimise handling and for use in the washing machine. Earlier this year,Tracey Sutherland turned The BBC’s The Great British Sewing her passion for sewing into making face Bee got in touch with Tracey, wanting coverings to raise money for Francis to support her cause. She ordered a face House, the children’s hospice that cared covering made of poppy-patterned for her son until his death in 2011 material to match one of her own shirts. The family, including Daniel’s twin Andrew, now 26, and older brother
is the love and care that the hospice gave to Daniel, who passed away nine years ago, aged 17. The teenager had complex medical needs and as a baby, picked up a respiratory virus that put him into intensive care. As a result of the coronavirus crisis, the Didsbury-based hospice is facing a huge shortfall in income from cancelled fundraising events.

Rachel began her career as a nurse working in Withington Hospital and The Christie Hospital NHS Trust in a variety of roles, and also worked at Marie Curie Cancer Care before joining St Ann’s as director of clinical services in 2012. Joel’s knee-jerk reaction to diagnosis was to fundraise for the Teenage Cancer Trust. But helping others differs greatly from turning the spotlight on oneself. Despite multiple on-stage appearances, including starring, aged 12, in Victoria Woods’ That Day We Sang, Joel found the concept unacceptable.
Steph Danziger and husband Ian Runacres are private people. Their lives have centred around their respective public sector professions in child mental health and housing support for the vulnerable, and their multi-faceted son, Joel. This accomplished Royal Exchange and television child actor recently enrolled as a 19-year-old English literature fresher at King’s College, London – a year later than intended. For whilst his Parrs Wood High School peers proceeded to uni or enjoyed a carefree gap year in 2019, Joel faced life-and-death health issues here at home. Rigorously holding down his job in Didsbury’s Boots, he underwent a barrage of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and grueling immunotherapy to ward off a highly aggressive and presently incurable brain cancer, glioblastoma. After diagnosis, patients’ average life expectancy is 18 months. When Joel asked if he would reach the age of thirty, the answer was a simple “no”. 18

Not until this August, did he acquiesce to crowdfunding. You see, no NHS treatment is currently available, yet, a unique, tailor-made dendritic cell vaccine can prolong and improve his life. Manufactured in Cambridge, it can hopefully be administered to him at King’s College Hospital – but at a cost of £400,000. Joel’s story After the family’s Far East trip for Ian’s 60th birthday, festivities were renewed on August 15th, 2019, when Joel garnered his clutch of excellent and diverse A-levels. Ready for ‘off ’, he packed in preparation for the uni course of his choice. Throughout his studies, Joel’s acute headaches and blurred vision had been increasing. So, on August 28th, heeding parental advice, he nipped to the optician, possibly linking his own pains to Ian’s recurrent migraines. That trip saved his life. It also changed the family’s world.
I’ve got to get to the eye hospital immediately.” She rushed there too and recalls: ”Brain scans revealed a massive golf-ball sized tumour buried in the right side of his brain. It affected his optic nerve and vision. We believed it was benign. Joel was then referred to Salford Royal Hospital and admitted on Tuesday September 3rd. Though at 18, they considered him an adult, they kindly let me stay with him. On Thursday September 5th, after an eight-hour operation, Matt Bailey removed the tumour from our teenage son’s brain. He was discharged on Sunday September 8th.” Referred to The Christie the following week, Joel wanted no disruption to his

commitment at Boots. So, during six weeks of daily chemo and radiotherapy and all subsequent monthly top-ups, he opted for early morning appointments only. He also, last November, volunteered for an immunotherapy trial, which his system found harder to tolerate. Meet Joel “The morning of my diagnosis was awful,” remembers Joel. “I had to do something. Expecting £1,000 max, that afternoon I set up a Teenage Cancer Trust JustGiving page. The £20,000
donated still overwhelms me. But £400,000 is another ball game! “My treatment is so expensive because it’s exclusive to me, useless to anyone else, therefore, commercially unviable. But this personalised way of treating

New start “I’ve lived vicariously through my wonderful, caring friends’ experiences. I knew nothing of their fundraising climb up Snowdon on September 19th until the last minute. I’m so very grateful, moved and a bit embarrassed. And I’m now at uni in a student bubble, having lectures online. I’ve been out of education for a year. I look forward to the work, the independence, meeting people in the big city, using my brain – and the dendritic cell vaccine.”
All-rounder “l want to be a scriptwriter but studied sciences too. They helped me understand some of my treatments and discuss them with my oncologist, which made me feel rather adult. Initially, I was lost trying to get through each day. I always wanted my life planned out but had to learn to go with it and accept hospital as my new normal… and I’ve lost that sense of unfairness and anger. But in hospital, seeing what other families first experience, takes me back. My heart

Faye’s Clean Break We meet the busy mum-of-three who turned her talent for multitasking into an award-winning housekeeping and cleaning business in Altrincham… Bright and Beautiful (B&B) Altrincham is about to celebrate its 10th birthday. Owner Faye Roddy is over the moon. Rapid growth and clients (including some top-secret celebrities) who can’t believe how they ever lived without its discreet and dynamic services; life for B&B is looking, like the homes it cleans, very bright indeed! Schooled in multitasking 14 years ago, Faye was a single mum-of-two working at a local school. Across each day, she wore a multitude of hats… breakfast club manager, after-school manager, nursery nurse, play group leader and teaching assistant. “It was a standing joke amongst all the mums,” laughs Faye, “that I could always be spotted legging it up and down the corridor, switching my clothes to suit the next ‘role’!” One of those mums watching, disillusioned with local services on offer, had decided to open her own cleaning company and, impressed with Faye’s dynamism and work ethic, invited her onboard. More than 50% of households have them and they’re like extended members of the family. We can’t employ anyone who is scared of them or who can’t take on the responsibility of, for example, ensuring indoor cats don’t escape or giving the family dog a cuddle!”
People wrongly assume it’s a costly affair too: “Depending on what you have done,” reveals Faye, “it really can just be the same cost as a family meal out and its rare for us to not be able to work within someone’s modest budget.” Glowing reviews The B&B Altrincham franchise is growing fast; as B&B’s first multiterritory franchise, it now covers Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Prestbury. Reviews on social media positively shine. In 2016, Faye was nominated for the British Franchise Association’s Female Franchisee of the Year. Next, never allow your husband to set up his desk in your bedroom. That way, you won’t suffer the embarrassment of sashaying from the en-suite – naked, wibbly wobbly bits swinging low, singing Dancing Queen – straight into his Zoom board meeting. Finally, do not buy iPads for elderly relatives – you will develop a nervous twitch from all the hours spent remotely helping them download Houseparty app and a migraine from repeatedly begging them to angle the screen away from the ceiling on FaceTime.

I made up some grow-your-own goody bags for the street, each containing six sanitised pots of seedlings (tomato, courgette, dwarf French bean, cabbage, lettuce and sunflower) and a little explanatory note. They went down well, so, every fortnight, I made up another load and delivered them along with some vegetables from our allotment and some packets of seeds for those with kids who wanted to have a go themselves.
Then, other neighbours decided to share their passions. A yoga teacher did a WhatsApp video class every Monday, a chef hosted a cooking class every Wednesday, and couple of teenage musicians entertained us from their front porch every Friday. Together, we supported each other through it. So, please, if lockdown descends again, reach out to your neighbours, connect, support, help. And if anyone has any spare seeds, get planting.

Helping minds & saving lives Professor Louis Appleby talks about his work in suicide prevention and his plans to tackle Covid’s impact on the nation’s mental health Psychiatry Professor Louis Appleby CBE leads England’s Suicide Prevention Strategy, directs both the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness and the University of Manchester’s Centre for Mental Health and Safety. Covid 19 Everything has been dominated by the ravages of Covid19, so has 2020 influenced Louis’ life’s work? Our former mental health ‘czar’ replies: "We don't yet know the pandemic’s impact on suicide rates – we’re setting up new national systems to monitor it. We haven’t seen the rise many people fear, though that may change if there is a serious economic downturn. ”The national suicide prevention response has focused on children and young people, those with pre-existing mental health problems, others who are economically vulnerable, those who have been traumatised or bereaved, and people at risk due to factors like domestic violence or alcohol. It’s a collaborative effort from public health, suicide prevention charities, academics, the NHS and the Government. My role is to help co-ordinate this response and my research unit at the University of Manchester is supporting those leading suicide prevention plans in every part of the country."

Prior to his University of Edinburgh medical course, Louis’ work in an oldstyle asylum had awoken a life-long interest in mental health. A humanitarian in deed and word, Louis recognised that psychiatry of all medical specialisms would allow him greater insight into his patients’ conditions. He states: “In this far-reaching job, respect for the individual is key. The breadth of human experience and the learning gleaned from whatever people have been through, have done and have known, are astounding. We must be able to stand by them, look at what they have undergone and then see what they want that we can give. From dementia to perinatal psychosis, each person’s needs are complex. Mental health services cannot be effective on their own. Social, financial, housing and psychological support may be required as well as medication – which doesn’t suit all patients. Not all treatments are delivered by us but by the therapists and practitioners we supervise, the experts in our comprehensive plans.” Suicide Causes of suicide are multiple. Suicide and self-harm are connected. Those most at risk of suicide are middle-aged men. Those most at risk of self-harm or self-cutting are teenage girls. Domestic abuse and unrealistic body ideals can increase the suicide risk for young women. Economics can push men, in particular, over the edge. Sensational coverage of a suicide or losing a close
friend or family member can also trigger ‘copycat’ actions in a vulnerable youngster. However, Appleby views social media, often blamed for the last decade’s increase in under-20s’ suicides, as just another contributory factor. Data gathering takes a good year. The recently published suicide figures for 2019 show a rise of 5%, on top of the 11% rise in 2018. Taken together, we now have the highest rate for 20 years. So although the overall trend of recent decades has been downwards, this has been reversed in the last 2 years, partly because we now apply a lower standard of proof to suicide conclusions at inquest. Nevertheless, tragically, in England around 5,000 people a year do take their own lives. Over five per cent of under20s in this group are LGBT youngsters struggling with family conflict, selfdoubt and bullying. Prevention The paradox of suicide prevention lies in helping those not at conspicuous risk whilst watching out for those already deemed susceptible. Louis’ colleague for 20 years, road accident victim Martin Lawlor worked as a junior researcher on studies of self-harm & published papers on who is at risk of dying by suicide later or of repeating the self-harm pinpointing an urgent need for vigilance within society in general and families, friends, associates and professionals in particular. Introducing prevention measures into schools, workplaces, community
organisations and GPs’ surgeries can encourage people in distress to open up and, in some instances, find effective help. How to help Talking with someone you sense is suffering can make the difference between life and death. The acronym WAIT stands for: Watch for signs of distress and uncharacteristic behaviour, such as withdrawal, outbursts, irritability and talk of suicide. Ask that person if they have suicidal thoughts. Broaching this taboo topic will not encourage someone to take their life, nor implant the idea but burst their bubble of secrecy and possibly prove a lifesaver. It will pass. Do assure the person that with help and time, suicidal feelings do subside. Talk to others and find professional and personal help as soon as is possible. Professor Appleby believes: “If we do more for young people and protect them with better housing and employment, suicide numbers will fall. For instance, one can’t identify students at risk, but staff and counsellors can make colleges and universities mentally safer places. Pals can look out for their peers to create a more emotionally supportive community. A crisis is something you can survive; you won’t be in it forever. There IS help out there.”

My lockdown cancer diagnosis… V Varilly tells us what it’s like to get a rare cervical cancer diagnosis during a national lockdown Then I got the letter asking if I would go to the hospital ‘accompanied by one person’ for my results. I was concerned about going into hospital because of the virus and even thought about missing it – nothing was bigger than Covid-19, right? We went and, after a long wait, I was told: “Your results came back, you have cervical cancer.”
My whole world went black. I really felt the physical pain of heartbreak. I was now faced with the other big C. I felt lost
carry my children if it came to it! My husband was relentlessly positive. Google was my enemy; whisky was the greatest medicine. Scans confirmed stage one cancer with no need for chemo/radiotherapy. I needed a large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) procedure, where they would cut away the affected tissue. I was warned that I may have problems carrying children, but I was just happy knowing I could get through it with my womb intact. I had two procedures, as the first wasn’t successful. Thankfully, the surgeon called to say the second operation was effective and my cancer nightmare was over.”

The food We enjoyed a delicious dining experience at The Cavendish’s 2AA Rosette Petrichor Restaurant and upon arrival at our table, which overlooked the upmarket, worldrenowned Fortnum & Mason, we were greeted with a bottle of the finest Champagne. We were hosted by Amanda, who we can only describe as charming and knowledgeable. And the food? Well, we can definitely see why it’s award-winning. We started with thinly sliced beef carpaccio coupled with a crispy and moreish ox cheek croquette – a recommendation of Amanda’s and we
weren’t disappointed. Gooey melt-inthe-mouth burrata with roasted chilli and pepperonata also went down a treat. To follow, was creamy artichoke and saffron risotto topped with Berkswell cheese (rich but broken up by crunchy, fresh artichokes) and, of course, a sumptuous steak. A 300g sirloin to be exact, teamed with sautéed spinach, triple-cooked chips, caramelised shallots, creamed celeriac and parsley crisps.
This fine dining restaurant serves modern British cuisine using fresh, seasonal produce. Guests can also enjoy an after work or pre-dinner tipple in the cosy Petrichor Bar & Lounge, which has an extensive drinks list and stylish seating area.

Did she want in? “Absolutely!” And so, work on Escape to Freight Island began as part of a wider £1.4bn regeneration of the Mayfield Depot – a project whose quick-fire response in adapting to the ‘new normal’ was as impressive as it was overwhelmingly positive.
We can’t believe it was turned around at such break-neck speed.
“Everyone from my furloughed team was very excited to be back working,” says Sonia, “and we absolutely smashed it, opening the weekend of July 24th. It was massive! It may have been raining on the opening night, but it came alive and there were covered areas aplenty, so it didn’t matter. The place has such a great energy about it!”
It’s what Manchester needed, and probably what most cities could do with right now.

“I can’t believe it either!” laughs Sonia. “What I love most is that there’s such an intimate atmosphere despite it being such a massive site.”
Making the vision reality When Sonia first got the call, the site was just an expanse of (south-facing) rubble. “In my mind, I had Kanye West’s Sunday Service, his pop-up church events lit by lighting artist James Turrell – his work is incredible and really powerful. I also recalled another image, Archigram – the 1960s’ vision of the future utopian city, which happened to look exactly like the view you get from the site of the By Lisa Symonds

I showed Gareth and he said, ‘Let’s do it’.” The biggest challenge in realising her vision was accessing building materials and getting them to site fast. “As soon as we’d drawn something,” recalls Sonia, “it would get built by the next day. It’s the fastest project I’ve ever seen!” Working alongside Sonia and Gareth – from empty wasteland beginnings through to opening weekend – were Unabombers Justin Crawford and Luke Cowdrey (Volta, Electrik and Refuge), Jon Drape (Engine No.4) and Daniel Morris (Albert Hall). “It was an exceptionally dynamic team,” explains Sonia, “and a chance for me to reconnect with old friends. It’s been an absolute rollercoaster, but I loved every minute of it.” Safety first Everything has been put in place (both design and service wise) with social distancing in mind. Seating is liberally spread out; some covered with the local climate and winter in mind. Guests order and pay using the app or QR codes on the table, and food is served direct to the table. You can book online but, with more tables being added since opening, walk-ins are on the menu too.

Now it’s been gloriously turned on its head, the inside eateries will open later this year. Eventually, capacity will hit 2,500. A happy SPACE The press and social media response to Escape to Freight Island has been brilliant. Sonia’s feeling positive about the future. Currently in planning, there’s a socially distanced, new-build office for Pabla and Pabla Solicitors (the first of its kind, we believe) and when we speak, Sonia’s in the middle of an exciting new project in Poulton-le-Fylde. “20 holiday-let barn conversions, including a wedding barn,” reveals Sonia, “it’s a bit like Soho Farmhouse. Again, it has been designed and will be run with safety in mind – guests check in online, their keys are placed in a box, lots of privacy and space, and a wellness spa at which appointments are staggered.” “You have to be creative in order to succeed in that industry now.”

Sunday lunch comes boxed, however, there is some cooking required. For your main, there’s topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower and Lancashire bomb cheese, honey roast carrots, duck fat roasties, braised cabbage and beef gravy. And to finish, there’s sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce, sherry-soaked raisins and clotted cream. Now we are having to get used to the ‘new normal’ and spending a lot more time in our homes, this service is a real treat. Afternoon tea is welcome any day of the week, especially with Prosecco! And if you turn up to anyone’s house on a Sunday morning with the @HOME Sunday lunch, you’ll be friends for life.

A WW2 ship’s cook, his late grandfather Hajji Chand Miah Samed arrived in Manchester in 1945, paving the way for the next four generations to settle in the region. Head chef at Manchester’s famed Manzil restaurant and trailblazer for Indian foods, Chand Miah opened the iconic Lahore, Kismet, Curry Centre and Curry Inn eateries. He also coined the term ‘rogan josh’, meaning ‘peppery meat and vegetables’ from ‘rogan gosht’, which was specific to meat only. I looked forward to returning to work when my maternity leave ended, as my career is still a part of who I am. There’s nothing wrong with that and women shouldn’t be made to feel guilty about it. We can still be great mums and not feel bad about having a career.

They were more likely to be furloughed or were working longer hours because they were homeschooling and taking care of the family. The pandemic has widened the gender gap at home and at work, and the needs of working mothers are more important now than they have ever been.” WorkingMamas.com wants to campaign for improved childcare support for families that is affordable and works. “If there’s one thing the pandemic has shown, it is that childcare has been the number one issue this year, whether you work part-time or full time or you’re a stay at home mum,” says Tasnim. “We want to start campaigning for WorkingMamas’ rights, such as the right for every WorkingMama to be able to afford good quality childcare local to them (as much as they want). Access to excellent childcare at affordable rates is often the biggest hindrance to women propelling in their careers.” She added: “We also don’t see enough female CEOs as role models in the FTSE 100 and that narrative needs to change. Campaigning can help us get noticed and help and support all WorkingMamas to achieve anything they set their mind to.”

A personal approach Whilst ensuring the financial nuts and bolts are tightened and in full working order has been imperative in these precarious times, Sarah believes that sometimes clients just need reassurance that, together, getting through tough times is possible. “We deliver the personal touch,” says Sarah. “There are only eight of us in the team and Dathan and I know every single client personally and we touched base with them all during lockdown. People needed us – sometimes out of office hours – and we were there for them, offering whatever support they needed from us.” Working under the ‘new normal’ “We helped a lot of clients get through the lockdown,” reflects Sarah, “now we need them to survive – even if it’s in a different manner or capacity – well into the future… and I am extremely hopeful they all will.” To date, Sarah has been impressed by clients’ resilience and strength in adapting to the new normal – whether it be creating a new Covid-safe environment for customers or using existing resources to diversify. However, she’s keenly aware that making the right decisions in the next 18 months is fundamental to success. Here is her advice on best achieving that success:
Act now “Use this time, whilst your business isn’t quite back to full capacity, to focus on the future. 2021 will NOT be the same as 2019. You have to adapt and use this time to look at what your business is going to do over the next 18 months. This is the time to look at your business differently and hopefully it won’t just survive but thrive. Don’t leave it too late; if you haven’t planned, you will struggle.” Stay focussed “Don’t get bogged down in worrying about what everybody else is doing. Try and concentrate on what matters to you and your staff. Remember that communication is going to be key to keeping staff morale up and keeping your customers/clientele happy.”
Be realistic “Furlough is winding down and if the Government is going to offer any support again, unfortunately, it won’t be on this scale nor likely to be for all sectors. Assume it’s not going to continue and, as awful as it is, consider that there may be redundancies you have to factor into your forecast.” Create a vision “Create a positive vision for the future of your business; an 18-month plan that factors in things like having the capacity to start repaying any loans taken out during the pandemic.” Be diverse! “Don’t be scared of doing something different – use all the skills and resources
that your business has. It might be as simple as tweaking your current product or service. The main thing is making sure that the business is viable and is going to be sustainable moving forward.” Looking forward to a bright future “It’s going to be difficult,” says Sarah, “but with planning and structure, we can all get through this. We just need to not bury our head in the sand and look at everything. Whether you need a monthly service or support with a one-off project, we are there to hold people’s hands or just act as a sounding board. We genuinely care and we want to see all our clients – new and old – succeed.”

how is the holiday park industry faring? 2020 has been the most challenging year the industry has ever faced. Whilst lockdown had an inevitable impact, we are now seeing an unprecedented number of enquiries from people looking to invest in their own holiday home. The staycation market is buoyant and we’re expecting an extended season as people embrace the idea of holidaying into the autumn and winter. Our beautifully appointed holiday homes provide the comfort and cosiness to escape at any time of year. So, whilst it has been a tough year, there are many reasons to be optimistic. how has holidaying at a haulfryn resort changed and what does 2021 have in store? The most important thing is ensuring everyone’s safety. This has led to some important
changes across our parks, including contactless check-ins, cashless payments, social distancing measures, enhanced cleaning processes, and booking systems for gyms, activities, spa treatments and restaurants. What is frozen shoulder? Frozen shoulder is a common condition causing painful restriction of movement in the shoulder. It is caused by inflammation of the lining of the shoulder joint and although it can come on after a minor injury to the shoulder, such as a trip or a fall, it frequently develops spontaneously. What are the main symptoms to look out for? Although shoulder pain is one of the most frequent reasons for patients to consult their GP with a musculoskeletal problem, what sets frozen shoulder apart from most other diagnoses is that the shoulder becomes stiff. Other common symptoms are a sudden severe exacerbation of
the pain if something pulls on the arm e.g. dog on lead or child holding your hand. What is the treatment? Thankfully, frozen shoulder is a simple condition to treat once the correct diagnosis is made. Often a MRI scan is undertaken to confirm the diagnosis. Successful resolution of the painful and stiff symptoms is quickly brought about by an injection into the shoulder called hydrodilatation or, in resistant cases, by a minor keyhole procedure. The good news is that once you have recovered from frozen shoulder, you can’t get it again!

Separating post-lockdown? Here’s what you need to know It is sadly expected that this September/October will see a significant rise in couples separating, following marital problems caused directly by the lockdown. September (following the school summer holiday), is usually a peak time of the year when divorce rates increase. This year, this has been compounded by the stress that the unprecedented lockdown restrictions have placed on couples. Before you make any decisions about your future, you should obtain the advice of a specialist matrimonial lawyer. Here are some things to consider before you separate:How can I ensure the children live with me or spend regular time with me after separation? If there is a dispute as to whom the children should live or spend time, the court will look at the “status quo”, i.e. what the children have been used to since their parents’ separation and if that arrangement is
working well for the children, the court won’t consider it appropriate to change it. If you wish your children to spend regular time with you, either don’t leave the children with the other parent by moving out, or if you do move out, ensure you rehouse in a property suitable to have the children stay with you overnight. If I leave the family home, will I lose my claim to it upon divorce? By moving out of the matrimonial home, you do not relinquish your interest in the equity, which will be taken into account when the financial settlement upon divorce is dealt with. However, by moving out, you may have less control over the selling process of the property if it’s going to be sold and less “negotiating power”. If I move out of the house, do I still have to pay the mortgage? If you’re named on the mortgage, the lender will pursue you for payment if the payments stop, even if

you have moved out of the property. Can my partner/spouse force me to leave the marital property? Not unless the court accepts there have been serious incidents of or threats of domestic violence. In most cases, your spouse cannot force you to move out of the matrimonial home, even if the house is solely owned by them. What if my spouse changes the locks? You have a right to occupy the marital home, whether you’re named on the legal title or not. Can I hide or give away my assets to prevent my spouse being able to make a claim? This is not advisable! In order to deal with a financial settlement upon divorce, you will have to provide full and frank disclosure of your financial circumstances. As there is always a paper trail, it’s likely that any hidden assets will be uncovered.

tennis scholarship in America for MhSG student 17-year-old tennis star, Holly Staff, has left Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) for America. With A grades in AS maths, physics and economics, she’s following her dream to become a professional tennis player, inspired by her heroes Serena Williams and Andy Murray. Holly takes up a tennis scholarship at Tennessee’s Vanderbilt University and explained: “They have a really, really good tennis team, so I already knew about Vanderbilt before I got in touch with the head coach. Vanderbilt's very academic, so it's got the best of both worlds for me.” Holly won the national championships for 16&U and 18&U in 2018 and was selected for Team GB in the Youth Olympics. Throughout her time at MHSG, she balanced training, competing and her studies; training before school every day and keeping up with her studies while away at championships. What will she miss most? Her friends at MHSG Sixth Form, her mum’s cooking and her cats! Good luck Holly!
Stockport Grammar Junior School’s new head Stockport Grammar Junior School’s (SGJS) new Headmaster Matthew Copping was first inspired to become a teacher when he volunteered at a local primary school at the age of 16. Seeing children understand a new concept or master a new skill sparked a lifelong enthusiasm, which has led to a career of almost 30 years dedicated to children’s academic and personal development. Mr Copping joined SGJS at the start of the school year following the retirement of Mr Tim Wheeler MBE. Prior to being appointed to the role, Mr Copping was head teacher of Brooklands Primary School in Sale. With SGJS’s new Pre-Reception building for nursery age children almost complete, he has joined SGJS at an exciting time. A keen runner in his spare time, Mr Copping enjoys completing half marathons each year as well as outdoor activities such as fishing or paddleboarding with his family.

Alderley Edge Girls celebrate A-level achievements at Nottingham, Harriet Rigby is off to Durham to study social science with history and geography, and Aditi Chandana – with four A* grades – will read medicine at Cambridge University.
Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is delighted for its Upper Sixth pupils who have achieved a fantastic and welldeserved set of A-level results. This year’s results, despite the current climate, have continued to reflect the successes of previous years with 35% of pupils achieving a clean sweep of at least 3 A grades and 72% of all grades awarded at A* to B. The Head Girl team all achieved a string of A and A* grades. Head Girl, Maggie Khoryati, is planning to study economics
Congratulations to all pupils, including Sophie Kay, who will read material sciences and engineering at Imperial, where she has also been awarded a scholarship. Lily Payne and Imogen Hughes are heading to Birmingham to read business management and biomedical sciences respectively, Shanice Donatien is off to Leeds and Emma Graham to Bath, both to read psychology, and Lucy Ferris plans to read modern language and culture at Durham. With her three A* grades, Dalia Halwani is looking forward to studying visual effects. Once again, AESG pupils are going on to study a vast range of courses at fantastic universities. The school is incredibly proud of the way in which their Sixth Form pupils coped during the period of lockdown and, although they did not have the opportunity to complete their examinations and demonstrate what they could do to individual examiners, they excelled in their attitude towards remote learning and absolutely deserve their successes.

As summer term drew to a close and parents sent in messages congratulating Bolton School on how well it had made the transition to virtual learning, there was also reflection on how much had been contributed to the local community.
Senior Girls produced 557 visors for local hospitals, GPs and care homes. Junior Boys contributed a further 150 visors and 250 visor headbands. Zain Khan from Year 6 developed cleanable and adjustable ear relievers, which were gratefully received by staff at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. In writing a poem for her grandparents, who she was missing, Year 8 pupil Poppy-Grace Stebbings gave hope and inspiration to people around the world when her work went viral. Whilst infants sent beautiful postcards to local residents, staff performed in the video for Peter Kay’s (Is This The Way To) Amarillo as part of the The Big Night In, which raised funds for the NHS. The Senior Boys’ Beekeeping Club donated jars of honey to food packages for those families most in need during the Covid-19 crisis.

Rosie and the Unicorn A local mother and daughter have published a lockdown storybook – Rosie and the Unicorn – that celebrates their diverse local community Sally Penni, 41, and her six-year-old daughter Maddie began "My nephew asked if I worked for the Justice League (DC writing Rosie and the Unicorn together when home-schooling Comics heroes)," she says, "and I wanted him to see that got tough and left them uninspired. I sort of do, but I wear a different superhero costume." Maddie's love for magical creatures became the starting point for a picture book that is now set to raise funds for the NHS, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and mental health charity Young Minds. In the story, Rosie wakes one morning to find a rainbow unicorn outside her bedroom window. The pair fly around her village, meeting local people from all over the world. Rosie tells the unicorn that people come from all kinds of different families, some have two dads, and some have none, they have different religions, different accents and many varying colours of skin. Well-known local landmarks, including the Cheese Hamlet, Wilmslow Road, the Poppy Path and Didsbury Park, can be seen throughout the book, which is illustrated by Lisa Williams. Lockdown has been extra tough on the family, as Maddie, her parents and two older brothers, Jack, 9 and Will, 8, have been shielding throughout to protect a family member. Sally, who works as a lawyer in Manchester, says: "The last few months have been very difficult, working from home whilst trying to home-school three children, who have not been allowed out at all, has been tough, but projects like publishing this book have kept us going. Our family is dual heritage and it’s so important for our children and many others to see picture book heroes and heroines who look just like them. Not all little girls have long blonde hair and big blue eyes. "The story of Rosie and the Unicorn celebrates multiculturalism, love, kindness and community cohesion. It invites us into a world that more closely reflects our own experience and confirms that heroines can be from anywhere, they can have brown skin and women of colour can hold their own in court." Just as Sally is a lawyer, in the book, Rosie's mum is pictured in court wearing a barrister's wig and gown.
And little Maddie? She is looking forward to returning to school and giving copies of the book to her teacher and friends.
"It's very exciting to have a book where the characters look like me and my friends,” she says. "I love the story because unicorns are magic; they can make things become real and can bring other animals back from extinction. Unicorn dust can make anything you can think of come to you." All profits from sales of the book will go to the NHS, Manchester Children's Hospital and Young Minds. Professor Wynn from Manchester Children’s Hospital said: “This is a great book, and great that it’s written for Manchester by one of our Transplant Unit parents and her daughter. Transplant medicine involves the whole family of course, and not just the patient. It is especially good that the proceeds of the book are being donated to the research and other work of our department. Families that we have looked after are so knowledgeable of the work that we do, and how we strive to improve. The book is partly a commitment to the continuation of our work in transplant from Manchester, rooted in personal experience and this means everything to us.” The book has been enjoyed by both children and adults, and there have been letters of support from HRH The Queen and also singer Martin Kemp. The mother and daughter duo as well as big brothers Jack and Will have been featured on several local radio stations and national shows, including Radio 5 live, Channel 5 and Granada Reports.

Shimmering walkways, lights and lanterns will guide the walkways, marking the route direction, and extraordinary dragon sculptures will lead the way to Lightopia’s food stalls and licensed bars. Lightopia will be open to the public from Friday 20th November until Sunday 3rd January. The event is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, except during school holidays. To say that it hasn’t been an easy time for live entertainment and events over the past six months is quite an understatement. But it does seem that some of our theatres and concert halls are finally able to make steps towards opening their doors again or, at the very least, in a position to offer some new and exciting opportunities online or in an outdoor environment. We have all enjoyed being able to see exclusive screenings and extraordinary live broadcasts over recent months, but if you’re like me, you will be itching to get into an actual theatre again – desperate to see actors and musicians on stage and enjoy the shared experience that you only really get from live events. The days of full theatres and large productions may still be some distance off, but the chance to wander around an 82

exhibition or get back into a socially distanced performance space is something to rejoice and embrace. Let’s have a look at what is on offer in our city and what we can look forward to in the next few months… Museums and galleries Many museums and galleries have now reopened with lots of Covid guidelines and safety precautions in place to ensure that your visit is safe and within Government guidelines. Many require pre-booking, so you will need to visit their website first, and numbers are strictly limited, but they are welcoming visitors and would be delighted to see you. Manchester Museum Living Worlds, Nature’s Library and Vivarium exhibitions are open from Wednesday–Sunday, 11am–4pm. Go to museum.manchester.ac.uk to book free tickets.

Theatres and venues Many theatres have been hosting amazing live-streamed events during lockdown and continue to do so – check social media and websites for upcoming dates. Some venues are now able to welcome socially distanced audiences, but this is not an easy option and is not financially viable for many places. Details of some of the theatres that have been able to announce plans are here but do check social and online regularly for updates on your favourite venues. The Lowry thelowry.com The Gruffalo 4 December–10 January The Lowry has cheered everyone up by announcing that Christmas isn’t cancelled after all. By moving The Gruffalo from the smaller Quays Theatre into the much larger Lyric Theatre, the venue is able to offer socially distanced performances for families. This is a wonderful show, which is a fabulous adaptation of the classic picture book and will be a super outing for everyone. The theatre has lots of Covid-19 prevention measures in place and is looking forward to welcoming families back into the venue.
The most perfectly named show of the moment, SIX returns following previous sell-out visits and this time, of course, it will be in a socially distanced environment (it too has moved from the Quays Theatre into the Lyric), but nothing can impact on the powerful stage presence of these six royal queens. This production will be the first live performance in The Lowry since March and is a powerful antidote to the current situation we all find ourselves in and a welcome opportunity to check into the theatre again for an 80-minute celebration of uplifting music, history and girl power! HOME homemcr.org HOME opened its doors for cinema screenings and bar and restaurant bookings in September and has announced a programme of live theatre starting this month. The programme includes world premieres from RashDash, David Hoyle and Robin Richards & Clara Casian. Its 500-seat theatre has been reduced to 120 to ensure social distancing and tickets are priced at £10. Check the website for latest information, live performances and live screenings. Bolton Octagon octagonbolton.co.uk The Octagon has been through a lot of changes over the past two years, including a redesign and extensive construction works taking place throughout the
building. There are plans to reopen its new kitchen and bar alongside a number of creative workshops in December, but its previously announced productions are all being rescheduled. Alternative events are planned for the main theatre in early 2021 and hopefully, we can share more information on these in the next issue as well as details of performances put back to 2021 at theatres such as the Royal Exchange, Palace Theatre, Opera House, Oldham Coliseum and The Stockport Plaza.

DEFENDING CHAMPION In all the years I’ve been playing with fancy cars for this magazine, nothing has ever come close to taking the place Land Rover has in my heart. Since I was old enough to hold a steering wheel, it was the vehicle I dreamed of and now I wield a laptop, it’s the vehicle I write about rather a lot too.

EMERGING CHALLENGER I’m not the only Land Rover fan. Energy billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder of Ineos, loved his Defender so much that he offered Jaguar Land Rover a fat cheque to buy the tooling for the previous discontinued model so he could continue production under the Ineos brand. When JLR declined, he designed his own competitor from the ground up, including a new range of BMW engines and styling that borrows many of the best aspects of the classic Land Rover shape. 84

The result is the new Ineos Grenadier, a name fans of the Tour de France will already recognise, as it’s the new name for the former Team Sky. That’s impressive, since the vehicle itself isn’t even due to launch for more than a year.
