The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Luna 1

Luna 1 was an unmanned spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union (a collection of countries run by Russia) on 2 January 1959. The aim of the Luna 1 mission was to land on the Moon, but the control system failed meaning Luna 1 missed the Moon by 5,995km. In terms of space exploration that’s actually pretty close, so even though the main mission didn’t go to plan, Luna 1 is considered the rst spacecraft to reach the Moon. It was also the rst man-made object to leave Earth’s orbit and orbit the Sun.

When Luna 1 was 113,000km from Earth, it released a large bright orange cloud of sodium gas that could be seen from the Indian Ocean. This was as bright as one of the faintest stars that can be seen in the night sky – it would have been dif cult to see with the naked eye, but it could be seen with a telescope.
