Mods & Rockers Collection 2015
Brief 5: 60s Stationary/Gift Range The Brief
Concept
Design a pattern based on the sixties and apply it to a range of stationary and gift products.
The pattern looks specifically at the rival groups of the sixties the Mods and Rockers. The two groups are communicated through iconic items and the two colours within the pattern. The motorcycle and scooter face opposite ways within the pattern as a reference to their different views and rivalry.
These must be packaged and presented in a professional manner as if they were to be sold in a store.
Deliverables
The range was screen printed as this more traditional method of printing is appropriate to the 60s time period. This also gives more vibrant colour which is also appropriate to the sixties.

Research - The Sixties
Research - Pattern, Gift & Stationary
Through researching the sixties the focus of the rival mods and rockers groups was selected. Understanding of the iconic representations of these groups was key to the communication of the theme through the pattern. The aged, hand rendered style of illustrations and colours in the pattern were inspired by some posters from this time.
Looking at existing patterns and how these had been applied to gift wrap and other products assisted the development and packaging of the range itself. In addition to such gift products 60s patterns and wallpaper were also researched for inspiration. These were often quite busy with layering images and often featured bright colours. 2/6

Brand
After researching it was identified that shift dresses and Vespa scooters were key symbols of the Mod group and Lambretta style motorcycles and leather jackets were equally as symbolic of the Rocker group. The mod target symbol was also included to break up the more detailed elements. Simple illustrations were produced of these and an effect was applied to give a hand rendered aesthetic, as a reflection to the time period.
Blue was selected to represent the rockers within the pattern, whilst orange represented the mods. These were adapted from the more typical red for Mods and dark blue or black for Rockers, to make a more contemporary and aesthetically pleasing pattern to be used today. Colour tests were carried out when screen printing to achieve the correct blue and orange.
A simple logo was produced using the target symbol as this featured both the blue and orange colour in the pattern. Courier was used as the font to work with the hand rendered style illustrations. The brand was applied to tags and labels to give a more professional finish. 3/6

Gift Wrap & Greetings Cards After printing several runs of the full pattern onto paper these were trimmed and packaged into two different forms. One rolled and one folded and packaged in cellophane. The greetings cards featured the illustrations in isolation, with the bike design card reinforcing the different directions of the rival groups.

Cards & Packaging The logo was screen printed onto the reverse of the card and packaged with an envelope inside the card so this was visible from the back. Naming labels with relevant details were included on all items, such as ‘plain inside for own message’. Cellophane wrapping was also used on cards and wrapping paper to again add to the professional finish and add appropriate protection for sale. 5/6

Notebooks Small stitched notebooks were produced with plain paper inside, using trimmed wrapping paper prints. Two different designs of hard back notebooks were also produced with one focussing on the different direction of the bikes representing the two groups and their rivalry.
Tag labels were more appropriate for the spiral bound notebooks and these were based on the traditional shape of such as a luggage tag. Branded belly bands were produced for the stitched notebooks to hold them closed.
