Concept

In groups come up with a concept for a new independent magazine. Produce a masthead and front cover design to show how this could look.

Stay is a travel magazine focused on holidays and mini-breaks within the UK, encouraging young professionals to have more breaks in the UK than travelling abroad.

Come up with a Kickstarter campaign that would raise funds to start the magazine.

The magazine will be released four times a year and each will be based on the season in which they are released. The content of each issue will include places to stay in addition to events and activities around the country during that particular season.

Audience Young professionals with a busy life, and therefore don’t have time to go abroad for two weeks at a time.

Independent Magazine Research

Cover Photography Research

Looking at existing independent magazines was beneficial to gain a better understanding of the type of content they include.Visually this was also helpful to see the type of cover and masthead designs these use. It was clear that these had a more sophisticated aesthetic in comparison to other magazines, and were simple in design. One cover photograph was a clear theme identified throughout the research.

Photographic research was also carried out looking for potential cover photographs. The aim was to source photographs of places in the UK that look as though they could be abroad. Finding these places confirmed our concept had purpose. The above selection could be used for differing seasons due to the different weather types. 2/5

Seasonal Front Covers

Masthead

The aim of the photographic covers is to showcase the UK as a holiday destination through the use of photographs of places that you would initially not think were in the UK.

Perpetua was the chosen font for the masthead, due to the designer, Eric Gill, being an English typeface designer. The idea is to keep as many production elements as possible UK based.

The covers will link to the seasons showing a beautiful or striking photograph at it’s best during the particular season of release.

The design of the cover is simple and clear to ensure emphasis is predominantly on the photography. The tagline also reinforces the concept and content of the magazine. 3/5

Other Potential Cover As the magazine would be focussed on the seasons the front cover photography should reflect this. These examples show how a potential winter and summer issue could look. The simplicity and sophistication of these designs are also appropriate for the young professional audience.

Crowd Funding Campaign

Incentives

The video on the Kickstarter page would visit some of the key places in the UK that will be featured in Stay magazine. It would initially trick the viewer into thinking they are looking at a postcard, until this is moved to reveal that the video is actually being shot in these locations and these are in the UK.

Incentives were selected based on the idea of travelling in the UK. Considering to be interested in the magazine the audience must have an interest in staying in the UK for trips. These would vary from train tickets to visits to some museums and experiences around the UK.

- Train tickets - Postcards - Name on a thank you page in an issue - Free issues of magazine - Tour of Guiness factory in Ireland - Tea tasting event - Cheese factory tour in Whales - Scotch Whiskey Tasting Experience in Scotland
