Brief 9: Yearbook Pitch A Collaborative Brief With Emily Lodge & Grace Buckley The Brief
Concept
Develop a concept for the Graphic Design, Leeds College of Art, 2015 yearbook.
The yearbook would be titled Made Our Mark and would be based on the idea that over the past three years as students we have developed our own mark in terms of design interests, and the year book is a publication of our mark as a year.
Audience Visitors to the end of year show, potential future students, design studios.
The concept is based on interactivity and personalisation and encouraging the reader to make their mark on the publication.
Deliverables A presentation including visuals of how the concept may work.

Publication Research Publication and book research was carried out specifically looking at format, finishings and innovative concepts. Some books looked at were specifically yearbooks but others were normal books with interesting or interactive elements. Seeing the use of a gold cover inspired the development of our concept. 2/5

Layout Development Following this stage and looking at potential layouts it was decided that a landscape format would best allow for larger images. It was also agreed that feature pages would be included to break up student focussed pages. These would include highlights from the three years or quotes from tutors. These would be consistent with the use of the same grid, but be significantly different such as
with a full bleed colour. We also considered the positioning of the sticker and whether this should have a designated spot, but felt just leaving space gave more freedom and did not disrupt the aesthetic. 3/5

The Cover
The concept of the book is to allow the reader to make their mark on it and personalise it. This would be achieved with the use of stickers that would be behind the front and back covers. These would allow the reader to apply a sticker on a piece of work they like or find interesting, and it would act as a bookmark for that page. The stickers would include positive comments and imagery.
In addition to stickers the book would also feature gold bookmarks. This is another way for the reader to remember favoured pages and personalise the book. This will also be beneficial at the end of year show as readers could mark the work of any particular person of interest.
The cover of the publication would feature a heavy weight black stock with a die cut circle in the bottom revealing the gold title. The ‘Graphic Design 2015’ will be embossed in the top corner giving a more tactile finish and adding a higher quality.

Final Spread This shows a final spread for the yearbook and how the concept of the sticker would work. The simple grid used could be adjusted and variations would be offered allowing students to select their own layout giving a more personalised approach.
