everyone’s talking about... LIAM AND CHERYL…THE NEW IT COUPLE
It’s the couple that no one saw coming…Cheryl and Liam Payne. On first look, Liam looks as baby faced as ever on contrast to newly divorced Cheryl, but sources have suggested that they are as happy as ever. The pair were spotted holding hands as they headed out on a dinner date to Salmontini restaurant in London even wearing colour coordinated outfits. The former X Factor judge was sporting a black jumpsuit and a fur coat whilst Liam was wearing a smart black suit and trousers. The couple couldn’t hide
their happiness as they grinned to onlooking paparazzi. Liam posted a picture of the gorgeous singer on his Instagram referencing International Women’s Day with a loving caption dedicated to Chezza. ’Happy International women’s day to my favourite woman in the world, hope I make you as happy as you make me x’ Cheryl and Liam are said to have met backstage at The X Factor last year before striking up a romance following her split from her husband Jean-Bernard in January.
RULE BREAKING BLAKE Blake Livley has sparked outrage among the fashionista set during the coveted front row for Michael Kors New York Fashion Week show whereby all beauties know that they need to get their legs firmly “uncrossed” for photographers. Attending the Kors show at the Spring Studios in Tribeca with her mother the former Gossip Girl star decided against placing her pins side by side, ‘the rule is made purely for the photographers, peoples legs get in the way…it messes up the
shots’. The star appeared alongside Elvis´grandaughter and fellow actress Riley Keough who also had her legs crossed. Deemed as “front row rebels” the girls may well get a ticking off from designers and lose their front row privileges in future years. Vogue US editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is a pro at front row etiquette and is all for keeping her feet firmly on the ground claiming that raised legs creates shadows and its crucial for designers to ensure that their new collections are presented in the best light.
KYLIE CONFIRMS ENGAGEMENT
Kylie Minogue has finally confirmed her engagement to 27-year-old Joshua Sasse. Kylie had been sparking wedding rumours for weeks wearing a rather large rock on her engagement finger. She remained tight-lipped on the engagement until taking the unusual measure of taking out an ad in the wedding section of The Daily Telegraph. The pint sized pop princess has been dating 27-year-old Joshua Sasse for 6 months after

meeting him on the set of television series Galavant and according to her pals she´s smitten. Public school educated Joshua who is 19 years her junior allegedly popped the question over the Christmas period although the duo have not been seen out in public since their Christmas vacation. Kylie´s previous relationships with the likes of rock stars Michael Hutchense and Hollywood actor Olivier Martinez have all failed so we hope she will be so lucky (couldn´t resist!) with this much younger, relatively unknown beau!

KIM KARDASHIAN NUDE SELFIE Never one to shun the limelight, Kim Kardashian, has posted a naked selfie of herself on Twitter with the caption “When you´re like I have nothing to wear LOL”. Famed as much for her curvy figure as the leader of the K clan on her Kardashian reality TV show, the image has gone well and truly viral with a host of celebs attacking the model for the nude snap. Comedy legend Bette Middler, 70, took the first swipe at the nude photo, tweeting a reference to the sex tape which made Kim, 35, famous. She wrote: “Kim Kardashian tweeted a
nude selfie today. If Kim wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’ll have to swallow the camera.” While Kick Ass actres Chloe Moretz, 19, joined in the fun, tweeting directly to Kim: “I truly hope you realise how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.” Our favourite has to be Piers Morgan who waded in with, “I know the old man´s $50 million in debt, Kim but this is absurd. Want me to buy you some clothes?”
CIARA’S BIG ROCK RnB queen Ciara and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson have just got engaged. The cute couple shared a selfie video on Instagram and Twitter showing a very happy Wilson, ‘She said yes’, alongside the ever so ecstatic Ciara flashing her massive 8 carat engagement ring ‘I’m so excited, God is so good.’ After Paris Fashion Week Wilson surprised Ciara with a vacation. Her rep has said, “She was shocked when they landed in Seychelles at the exclusive resort North Island, the biggest surprise was that Russell proposed to his fiancée at the romantic private ‘Honeymoon beach’ located on North Island”. The pair have no wedding date confirmed yet but the expiration date on their famous vow of celibacy seems to be arriving. Wilson and Ciara started dating in April 2015 and she already has a son born in 2014 with rapper Future in which they have been famously feuding since their split so fans have had fun in trolling Futures social media accounts and producing hilarious memes of the engagement news. The 30-year-old singer flashed her huge engagement rock while posing in a few of her sexiest swimsuits during a beach getaway. Congratulations to the happy couple.
Expect more comments and more likely some more than nude snaps from Kim who knows her greatest assets.
NANNYGATE BOMBSHELL FOR AFFLECK Ben Affleck has finally revealed that he did hook up with their children’s nanny but not whilst married to Jennifer Garner, his wife of 10 years. The 41 year old actor had to confess to the public after Jennifer’s shocking Vanity Fair interview but the actor was adamant about stating that he was fine about his wife sharing that information about their relationship because his fling with their nanny was after their break up… “She is allowed to talk about it, she felt like she wanted to discuss it and get it out there and get it over with” he revealed to The New York Times, his first interview about the break up following his ex’s expose. In Vanity Fair’s March Issue, the 43-year-old actress said she and Ben had been ‘separated for months’ before being linked to Christine Ouzounian. Jennifer felt the need to address the allegations as she revealed they were true but it was not a contributing factor in the breakdown of their relationship. “She was not part of the equation,” Jen revealed. Although this sounds like a recipe for disaster, Affleck seemed keen to shut down any rumour of bad blood between the two, “Jen’s great. She’s a great person. We’re on great terms”.

#ANIMALPRINTS
A new men’s trend that is slowly creeping into every man’s closet is the new animal print T-shirt. The jazzy leopard, zebra and even cow prints contrast well with black cropped trousers like Tinie Tempah or add some roar (get it?!) by teaming it up with ripped black or blue jeans. This trend may seem a bit too much for men who like to keep it calm with plain tees but trust us, you will be a man of real style if you are rocking one of these as fashion gurus claim that men wearing animal prints is something to be embraced and encouraged.
FIFTIES SHIRTS
Men, believe it or not but fifties shirts have shot back into fashion and should be placed in your wardrobe now! This shirt trend gives off a relaxed feel with textured materials giving a nod to the 50s. Runway collections from both Louis Vuitton and Raf Simons for S/S 2016 stood out on the catwalk with exactly these type of shirts in tow. Balance out the vivid designs with tailored trousers and accompany with wayfarers for the ultimate fifties vibe.
TRIED & TESTED
Protein powders are the current craze for health conscious men; they work hand in hand with fitness and maintaining your muscle definition. We have searched the web and consulted with Marbella’s own personal trainers and compared the top two brands on the market. BULK POWDER - Flavour - Chocolate caramel 100% WHEY NXT - Flavour - Strawberry TASTE Chocolate caramel and banana flavoured bulk powders were in fact a lot tastier than the 100% WHEY NXT products, however they

MInted do contain slightly more sugar. They come in a variety of tasty flavours such as strawberry and apple crumble. The Bulk Powder was easier to cook when making protein pancakes, simply add two eggs whisk up and heat in a hot pan for 2 minutes per side. Add greek yoghurt and honey as a healthy topping. Whereas the 100% WHEY NXT used in pancakes seemed to be a lot stodgier and burnt quicker on the pan. SATISFIED/FULL METRE When it comes to drinking a protein shake one of their best attributes is preventing you from snacking on unhealthy treats, as the sweet flavoured shake should fill you up enough from being naughty. Bulk Powder protein was more satisfying compared to 100% WHEY NXT which left testers feeling fuller for longer.
The shoe game is stepping up a notch with the slip on shoe. The materials and shapes of the design are timeless and provide an easy and polished finish. They look classic if paired with trenches or pair them with a more colourful and vibrant pair of trousers to look the part. These shoes are both casual and stylish.

SLIP DRESSES This spring utilising your fancy lingerie outside of the bedroom is a must! Not only can you wear detailed bralettes under chiffon tops but Muiccia Prada wants you to wear lingerie OVER your clothes as a suggestive yet subtle way to show off your assets. When adding lace and chiffon to any outfit you have to be careful not to reveal too much; therefore this idea of layering the lingerie over your clothes creates silhouettes of the figure with mesh instead of revealing too much flesh. Agent Provocateur have also been following this style guide introduced by Prada and are now showcasing their beautifully detailed slips off (and on) the runway. Pair these sexy slips with an oversized fur coat and heels for a glam city night out look. They can also be dressed down with sneakers or ballet pumps for a more casual look.
WHAT'S TRENDING... #LAMPSHADING
The Kardashian sisters and Kate Moss have developed a new trend which is taking the fashion world by storm. Have you heard of lampshaping?! Currently trending on Instagram this seasonal shaping look pairs two favourite staples: the thigh high boot and the XXL knit. The term comes from the silhouette that matches a lampshade – wearing a baggy oversized top with tight skin hugging boots. The sexy appeal comes from the flash of thigh that is showing and the oversized top allows your style to be casual at its finest. Fashion divas Kylie and Kendall Jenner first wore the trend wearing an oversized blue and black checked shirt with suede knee highs - very fashionista indeed.

Leave to simmer for 10 minutes and then add in the chicken and stir well whilst leaving it to cook. 5. Add hot water after 3-4 minutes until it covers the chicken and leave to cook for 45 minutes. 6. Whilst the curry is cooking, put the potatoes on boil in a separate pan. 7. Add in the cooked potatoes and let it simmer in the curry making sure not to break them. 8. Once the curry is cooked add in the Garam masala and the fresh chopped coriander. 9. Serve on a bed of rice with warm naan bread.
WINE MATCH If you’re wondering which wine to pair with curry, you’re not alone! What you need with curry (and this is why cold lager works so well) is a refreshing contrast to the heat of the food. A touch of sweetness helps, particularly with hotter curries like this traditional one from Nikki´s family recipe. What doesn’t work so well is tannin and high alcohol, which can emphasise and unbalance the spice in a curry. So although ripe fruity reds can work you don´t want anything too oaky – above the 15% mark. It would be advisable to go for a Spanish fruity rose, an off dry Riesling from Australia or New Zealand or a Pinot Gris or Chardonnay could work nicely. If you’re a fan of reds go for a juicy, fruity but not too oaky Shiraz or a Chilean Carmenère and Pinotage is a surprisingly good match with hotter curries.

THE BOSS
DRAKE ‘VIEWS FROM THE 6’
Melissa McCarthy looks unrecognisable as the lead in this comedy playing the titan of the industry Michelle Darnell who is sent straight to prison after being caught doing inside trading. Michelle is the wealthiest woman in America but is the boss from hell! The film centres on her release from prison 6 months later in which she is ready to rebrand herself and become America's Sweetheart but if only it was that easy… to those who fell victim to her previous actions they are not as willing to forgive and forget the mess she got them into! Her return to the real world watches her prepare to turn a new leaf as she is forced to move in with an underpaid former employee Claire that she once used to torture (played by Kristen Bell). During her stay she befriends the little daughter of Claire who is part of Girl Scouts who then accompanied by her Dandelion troop friends inspires and helps her to build a brownie empire from scratch. Following a rollercoaster of twists and turns Michelle tries to gain back her wealthy status and become the woman she used to be. The film is packed full of funny one liners as Michelle has an insult and opinion for everyone she meets such as mocking a young girl for having what she calls ‘a stripper name’, fans of the actress will know Melissa McCarthy is famed for her quick wit and controversial sense of humour. Directed by Ben Falcone, the talent behind hit comedy films Bridesmaids and What To Expect When You´re Expecting, this film is perfect for a light-hearted evening in the cinema with friends and will leave you laughing for days. The rap god has finally released his new album. Drake dropped the news himself on OVO Sound Radio on Apple’s Beats 1, which the Canadian rapper co-hosted; he announced, “We’re here working overtime on it trying to make it everything I know. The album itself will be coming in April 2016.” The 29-year-old singer first debuted the new single off the album ‘Summer Sixteen’ online and it was a huge hit with fans. It was produced by CuBeatz, Boi-1da and Noah ‘40’ Shebib with a small drop in from DJ Khaled near the end. The track is just a taster for the rest of the album which feature UK Grime artists such as Skepta - since Drake signed to Boy Better Know last month in a bid make even more waves in the UK scene. The music collaborations also include A-Listers such as Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and even Justin Bieber. The album re-debuts a song from his previous mixtape ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ entitled ‘You & The 6’, he recaps his life and simulates a phone call with his mother Sandi Graham letting her know why he has been doing and saying certain things she has heard about him through his music and the media. Drake has promised that this album is full of chart toppers and we couldn’t agree more! From his smooth flow of vocals the 15 tracks are really a mix of a dense and downbeat lyrics. ‘Views from the 6’ is intimate and open hearted which is backed up with machine beats and acts as tribute to the Canadian’s hometown. The soundtrack follows on from Drake’s first three LPs: ‘Thank Me Later’, ‘Take Care’ and ‘Nothing Was The Same’ all of which topped the Billboard 200 chart. Well done Drake, you’ve done it again! BOOK REVIEW
DEAD MAN'S LEGACY Costa del Sol based writer Marion Leigh has just launched her latest thriller Dead Man´s Legacy, the much anticipated follow up to smash hit, The Politician´s Daughter. Marion, originally from Birmingham, chose the plush surroundings of Marbella to launch her latest novel. Fans packed the popular Puerto Banus store Bookworld last month to meet the author and have their copies signed. The upmarket and cosmopolitan marina was a fitting setting to reveal the new book, which takes the reader on a fast-paced tour of the Bahamas, Las Vegas and the Great Lakes of North America in an exhilarating tale of money, greed, treachery and lust. The book tells the story of Sergeant Petra Minx of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She is ecstatic when her quirky boss, orders her to catch the next plane to the Bahamas to meet legendary Betty Graceby, a retired singer and Vegas dancer. The complaints Betty has been filing against her rowdy and unpleasant grandson Ken have finally caught the attention of the authorities. But why the sudden interest? It emerges that Betty’s fortune has tripled since the death of her husband, Joe LePinto, who was killed in a car being driven by her smooth-talking son Cliff. So is money the key, and how far will the Graceby boys go to secure their future? Petra develops a deep affection for Betty and her simple fact-finding mission eventually becomes much more personal. She comes to understand that LePinto’s influence is as pervasive in death as it was in life. The dead man’s legacy is indeed a weighty one. Fast paced and exhilarating this book will not disappoint. NEWS
....NEVER HAVE I EVER
T
experience. You go in and there's lots happening.
he name on everyone’s lips in Puerto Banus right now is the new Tibu night for Summer 2016 ‘Never Have I Ever.’ The brainchild of three leading ladies from the Lineker´s Group; Lina “Mummy Marbella” Hodgkins from ITVBe´s Life on Marbs and Portside girls Lauren Atkins and Emma Brown. The trio have seen a gap in the market for a night for women, run by women with all the fun, freebies and female talent utilised for this not to be missed regular Thursday night event. Plus there will be something for all the guys too, apart from the bevvy of beautiful ladies attending each week! Marbella Rocks caught up with Lina, Lauren and Emma to find out more about their foray into club promoting.
Q: So the theme for the new Thursday night at Tibu is ‘Never Have I Ever.’ Where did this idea stem from and how WILL this be incorporated on the night? Lina: I wanted to do my own night in Tibu, there´s no women doing this it´s all male club promoters in Marbella. While I was thinking this Emma and Lauren came to me randomly with an idea for Thursday nights. Emma: It was perfect timing really. Then we were chatting about what to call it. It´s a nightclub so everyone will be drinking and having fun, and everyone our age plays Never Have I Ever (from the secret telling game of the same name). Everyone knows it and it´s fun and cheeky. Lauren: I went travelling and Emma went to Uni and everyone knows about Never Have I Ever so it was a great choice. Lina: We didn´t want to do a typical ladies night; the first thing you think of is strippers and dildos! We wanted to make it glamorous and classy, so we´ve come up with slogans like “Wear your heels high and your hair higher,” which suit the brand.
28 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 19
Q: As it’s a ladies themed night, are the eligible male bachelors of Marbella still welcome to join and what are you offering them? Lina: There will be enough beautiful girls there for them to be entertained! It’s going to be glam and that will attract them. I have a saying “The money follows the honey!” Lauren: Yeah where women go – we all know men will follow.
Q: Do you have any special packages planned for the night?
Q: Now this isn’t your typical Thursday club night is it girls? What is unique about your night at Tibu? Lina: Well, it´s the first club night run for women, by women. I´m a lot older than them so I have the experience and Emma and Lauren are on the ground working so know all about the music, what people want and they speak to the ladies all the time.
Q: We’ve been informed you’re going to have a pop up make-up and hair stands on the first night? Lina: Yes we don´t just want to do a night, we want to do something with a point of difference. We came up with the idea to get sponsors every Thursday and we started with local companies. This pop up thing is massive in the UK but no one´s ever done it here yet. We are going to have a pop up hairdressers, pop up make-up, lipstick giveaways and 10% off fashion brands. Emma: We wanted it be more of a nightclub night not just an
Lina: Yeah for girls we have the Drink Pink package – within this we have rose vodka, rose tequila (it´s absolutely flying at the moment and blows your head off!) and pink Moët. We also have the masculine package, which is the 6 litres of vodka and all the big drinks offers.
Q: So, everyone’s played never have I ever after a few drinks. What we want to know is what is the most embarrassing thing you’ve done? Lina: Mine´s not for sharing.
Q: But everyone will think the worst!!!!? Lina: Everyone has played Never Have I Ever and we all know that’s not for sharing!!! (ha,ha) Lauren & Emma: Same here. We ducked out of that one well!
Q: Do you have any promotional offers on for the opening of this night? Lina: No we don´t discount but we are working with top local brands who will make the nights different and special. We have Bardou, Golden Tarts, Fake Bake Spain and a few more feelers out. We are waiting for confirmation on all the others before we can release details.
NEWS Q: Will there be female only DJ´s? Emma: Yes we are still working out our guest DJ´s but we are mainly going for talented female DJ´s.
Q: What music can the partygoers expect to dance to? Lauren: We are going for old skool and vocal house music but tracks that everyone can dance to. Emma: It´s stuff that you hear and you know the words and want to get down to but thats hardly ever played on the club circuits.
Q: We are guessing from your poster that the night will have a glamorous dress code, what is your perfect night out outfit? Lina: Always a classic dress, bright colours although I do love black. Lauren: Definitely a little black dress. Emma: A nude mini dress for me.
Q: What time does the night start and end? Lauren: We are open from 11pm to 6am. Emma: We´ll be having unofficial predrinks at all our venues – Babilonia, Bijoux, Lineker´s and of course Portside.
Q: Have you organised promotional nights like these before? Lina: I have! Lauren: Me and Emma have been here for 5 years but this is our first club night. We´re a perfect team as we have some great ideas and Lina has experience and knows how to action them. Emma: I think it´s nice that we haven´t necessarily all had the experience as we have ideas. Lina: It´s great, i´m always learning new things from the girls.
Q: What has the reaction been to the night like so far? Emma: There´s a real buzz going round at the moment. Lina: Ladies nights are massive in Dubai but have not been done properly here. We have great content here, which will make our night so different. Expect a lot of surprises to come this summer from us!

NATIONAL REPORT ON ROADSAFETY IN SPAIN (DGT)
Between 2003 and 2007 over 316,600 motorbikes over 500cc were licensed in Spain. According to Spanish statistics, motorbike riders are 17 times more likely to be injured in a road traffic accident than car drivers. In order to understand and then reduce the number of motorbike accidents, the DGT (Spanish equivalent of the DLVC) has produced a report on road traffic safety. Here we bring you the main conclusions of why these accidents occur.
WHEN DO ACCIDENTS OCCUR Nearly 30% of urban motorbike and scooter accidents happen at the weekend and the percentage of accidents resulting in death increases to 42%. The highest rate occurs between 06.00h and 20.00h.
OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED
THE HUMAN FACTOR
81% of motorbike accidents involve at least one other vehicle. Although the mortality rate decreases slightly when another vehicle is involved. 70% of accidents result from collisions between bikes and other vehicles. In urban areas, 3 out of 4 accidents involving bikes, also involve another vehicle
In urban areas, alcohol, and drugs increase the injury level by 170%, whilst speed increases the level by 370%. The report estimates that almost a third of accidents involving motorbikes and other 4 wheeled vehicles result form the motorbike not being seen by the driver of the car. 40% of accidents in urban areas involve head-on or side collisions between bikes and cars.
WHY DO ACCIDENTS HAPPEN 5 factoring conditions have been taken into consideration; traffic, road surface, atmospheric, human and accident type. In urban areas, the injury increases by 31% in faster moving traffic. This means that 97% of mortalities occur in fluid traffic. 95% of accidents occur during good weather conditions. This also implies that fewer motorbikes and scooters drive in bad weather. Statistically, the conditions of the road do not significantly affect the level of accidents.
KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT In urban areas, accidents occur at intersections involving traffic lights and roundabouts. On roads, the majority of accidents happen when overtaking on dual carriageways and normal roads, at exits and entries, and at intersections involving stop signs and give way.

alvin Harris is one of the most current talked about DJs, from his rapid good looks to his No1 hits he really does know how to do it right. The Grammy award-winning, multi-talented DJ, Ivor Novello-winning songwriter, performer and producer has been going from strength to strength after his first single releases ‘Acceptable in the 80s’ and ‘The Girls’ in 2007. He has collaborated with top artists from Florence Welsh to Rita Ora and by the sounds of his latest single with production trio Disciples with ‘How Deep is Your Love’ and his hotly tipped appearance right here in Marbella, the hunk has no signs of ever slowing down his fast paced career.
GEEK CHIC TO MEGASTAR The Scottish DJ who was born Adam Richard Wiles was attracted to electronic music in his teens and was recording bedroom demos by the age
of 15. Calvin released his debut album ‘I Created Disco’ in June 2007, which led to his singles reaching the top 10 and catching the attention of talented musicians who were as keen as ever to work with the young prodigy. Unusually in the industry today, Calvin was known to write, produce and perform all 14 tracks on his debut album and he did this solely on his (now extremely dated) Amiga computer! By the release of his second number one album ‘Ready for the Weekend’ Calvin had made a mark in the industry and led to his nomination of ‘Best British Male’. In terms of vocals the DJ regularly used to sing on records until February 2010 and the release of ‘You Used To Hold Me’ in which he opted to focus more on music production while having guest vocalists singing the main tracks marked a change in his career. Harris has now worked with most of the big names in music. He produced
Dizzee Rascals single ‘Holiday’ which reached number one in the UK singles chart and after claiming that global megastar Chris Browns track ‘Yeah 3x’ plagiarised his single ‘I’m Not Alone’ he was added to the song writing credits. Harris’ top of the league collaboration has to come from Barbadian singer Rihanna, following being her support act on the Australian leg of her tour the DJ produced ‘We Found Love’ which topped the charts in 27 countries worldwide and broke numerous records. He then produced the smash hit ‘Where Have You Been’ and not forgetting ‘Let’s Go’ the 2012 banger with Ne-Yo. To date he has collaborated with everyone in the who´s who of the record industry including Kylie Minogue, Mary J Blige, Kelis, Shakira and Ellie Goulding - not bad for a once spotty teenager from the deepest darkest Scottish suburbs.

FUTURE PLANS
ENDORSEMENTS Harris’ music has been selected as the backing tracks on many big adverts such as Coca Cola and Pepsi Max in which the ads showed famous footballers including Fernando Torres partying and crowd

DID YOU KNOW Harris is a teetotaller, from the age of 24 he removed himself from drinking alcohol claiming: “I wasn’t an alcoholic or anything like that, but it was clearly affecting what I do.” In a comical spark, Calvin famously invaded the stage in November 14th on the UK version of The X Factor during the performance by duo Jedward whilst holding a pineapple on his head, in which he later apologised for on Twitter. He released eight singles from third album “18 Months”, all of which hit the top ten, breaking a record set by Michael Jackson.
LOVE LIFE
It is no wonder that this megastar DJ - now the world´s highest paid DJ - attracts the most beautiful and talented leading ladies. In the early days of his career Calvin kept quiet about his relationships and not much attention was drawn towards who the lucky lady in his life was. But this all changed in 2013 when he began dating the

stunning singer Rita Ora. The two famously collaborated on her single ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ but their relationship didn’t go the distance and they parted ways in June 2014 due to career commitments. In March 2015 Calvin started dating global star Taylor Swift and by June 2015 Forbes ranked the duo as the highest paid celebrity couple in music with combined earnings of more than $146 million!
Music wise Calvin is in the studio planning on releasing some more big hits and awaiting the 2016 Brit Awards as has received not one but three nominations. A CULTURAL MELTING POT Marbella is a hub of cultural diversity and expatriation brings a wealth of opportunities and challenges to its new arrivals.

id you know there are 210 nationalities living in Marbella today? Among these, British German, Italian, French, Swedish, Uzbekistan and Malawi and so on…some are easier to find on a world map than others. Although communication may become lost in translation, the frustrations of our differences turn potentially smooth operations into rather more challenging affairs, living in a diverse and culturally rich climate however brings a wealth of opportunities and experiences to all who make the move. Many expatriates find themselves on a journey of selfdiscovery, questioning their personal goals, values and purpose, transcending patterns from old-ways of living and being, to inspire new possibilities, opportunities and dreams.
MOVING & LIVING THE DREAM There are several stages of cultural adjustment, some positive, some negative. In a psychological sense this is how they are broken down: Honeymoon: This is when the host country is idealised. Marbella is a ray of light, a beautiful gem of golden beaches, lush green golf courses adorned with lakes and foundations, restaurants to suit all taste buds, and glamorous parties running day and night. Rejection: This happens when the facade makes way for daily life, and the stresses of communication, administration and organisation sets in. Good friends are few and the party season has fizzled out, bringing feelings of loneliness to some, anxiety and fear to others. Regression: People think of home, and of the ideals of what was. At this point, some return, or get stuck in comparing all that was known to what is now, refusing to give up the old and make way for the new. Cultural Adjustment: the sensation of having arrived in acceptance, happy in this new environment, with a perception of acceptance, appreciation and interest in cultural differences is achieved. Getting to adapt to the new way is a personal journey, it can take time, but with acceptance of our differences, the process can be smooth. Wherever you are in your process, adjustment is a state of mind that is chosen, when you are ready, and then
FEATURES the belle that is Marbella will open to you and reveal the beauty of this diverse culture and environment. This is what expatriates living and working in Marbella have to say about their experience of adjusting to life in their new home, and to living in a culturally diverse community. For those that are well and truly “settled” this may have been you in the past and those that are new to Marbella - hopefully these stories will encourage you to enjoy the diversity Marbella has to offer. A period of adjustment is a natural stage, and for some the process is faster than others. From seeking the positive in the experience, looking for similarities, pursuing meaning, purpose and passion on a new stage, or standing at the school gate and saying ‘Hello’ to another person, there are many ways to adjust. The key is the courage and confidence to just try. The beauty of such a diverse culture is that we live among fellow souls who are also trying to adjust; you are not alone.
HELP GETTING ADJUSTED Choose Happiness- when adjusting to a new culture, at any age or time in your life, is to love, like and accept yourself, to have a sense of meaning, purpose and direction to fuel your days, and pursue activities that you enjoy. Happiness, after all, is the most important thing. Keep in Touch with Friends and Family at Home This sense of connection helps to settle anxiety around change. Exercise - This contributes to improved mood and better sleep. Cultivate Acquaintances - it takes time to make close friends and cultivate a sense of connection, belonging and community. Many people have busy lives, children to care for, and businesses to run, jobs to do and chores to attend to. Making time for acquaintances is the best investment in making good friends. Help Your Child Adjust - Children’s worries are age dependent; a three year old may be worried about their toys, a teenager will be more concerned about leaving their friends and being accepted in a new environment. Involving your children in the process from the start is an effective way to build their confidence to see change as positive and exciting. Maserati MACHINE Alfieri DREAM
I
t is no surprise that the Maserati Alfieri is in the list of top cars we are all waiting for - just by looking at the supercar you can see why.
The Alfieri is due to be released in 2017 after being officially unveiled as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. It has a stunning design powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine currently available in the Ghibli.…Jaguar F-type, Porsche 911 and MercedesAMG GT, you better watch out! Maserati Alfieri is the latest offering from the elite Italian car manufacturer. A statement 2 + 2 coupe; it’s smaller, being 4.5 metres long, more efficient and less expensive than the brand’s
48 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 19
existing GranTurismo.
Maserati CEO, Harald Wester has claimed he will maintain the brands exclusivity by capping the company’s annual volume at just 75,000 sales, a promise that may prove hard to keep as the Levante also comes online this year. It is hard to say if this promise will burnish or reinforce Italian car stereotypes but if achieved then the Alfieri will restore the Maserati to its rightful place in auto stardom as a still-workingman’s Ferrari. The car just echoes tension and drama. If it’s the convertible you’re after, you’ll have to wait a little longer as it’s
unlikely to be on the market much before 2019 or perhaps even 2020. Looking at the beauty of the coupe however, there’s no reason to wait! You’d be forgiven for recognising elements of the Alfieri as it has borrowed design features from the Maserati A6 GCS/54 which was designed by Pininfarina in 1954. It is based on the lighter Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale with a shorter wheelbase of 24cm with locking transaxle and Ferrariderived V8 engine. Not forgetting the turbocharged
3.0-litre V6 at its disposal, the production car is to be built from a mix of steel and aluminium with key parts of its structure taken from the next GranTurismo. The base tune will start around 410 horsepower with an option to upgrade to 450, while the top performer requires a displacement bump to accommodate its impressively rumoured 520 horsepower. The 410-hp engine is expected to drive the rear wheels, while more powerful models will come with four-wheel drive as standard. All Alfieri’s will use ZF’s eight-speed automatic.
Although the Alfieri will contribute to sales figures which are relative to the Maserati’s forthcoming Levante SUV, the coupe is placing the brands direction in a niche right between Alfa Romeo and Ferrari in the $70,000-to-$150,000 range. Maserati will separate its Alfieri and GranTurismo coupes with $30,000 between their base prices and a 9.4 inch difference in wheelbases. Wester has also confirmed that the Alfieri will be ‘100% Maserati’ with not a single component shared with sister brand, Jeep. The Alfieri is so much more than just a
concept – it’s a statement proving once more that Maserati is a sports car company to it's very core and paves the way for the continuation of Maserati's racing legacy.

he Oscars gives awards for cinema's greatest achievements and that's great and everything, but let's all admit that one of the most fun parts about watching is seeing our fave celebs all dolled up and dressed in their best (or worst!) outfits. Who killed it on the red carpet at this year's Academy Awards and who fell flat? Let's get to judgin,' people. It's time to look at the good, the bad and the OMFG from the 2016 Oscars.
FASHION Naomi Watts walked the red carpet looking like a glamorous mermaid, thanks to this stunning sequined Armani gown. We love the ombre hues and the scalloped details. The entire ensemble goes perfectly with her slightly wavy lob and bold, red lips.
Oh dear, Kate Winslet, what were you thinking? This strapless silk lamĂŠ dress looks like a sack, at best, and the sheen is less than flattering. Leave it to Cate Blanchett to always look elegant and glamorous on the red carpet. This seafoam coloured Armani PrivĂŠ gown is so lovely, especially with those floral appliques, and it's styled perfectly with those diamond drop earrings and cuffed bracelet. The usually radiant Heidi Klum definitely came a cropper this year. This lavender Marchesa gown holds no redeeming qualities. Too much fabric, too many contrasts and too much Maypole madness. Heidi Klum's gown reminds you of a really horrible bridesmaid dress? While I adore the colour, the puffy sleeve, floral appliques and that random cut-out is just not doing it for us. Margot Robbie's Tom Ford dress is giving us major '70s vibes, but we only wish she had paired it with another clutch that didn't have that long, fringe tail.

Yes, Tina Fey's purple strapless gown is quite simple, but we prefer it that way. She cleverly styled it with a beautiful statement necklace, and kept her hair back to show off her neckline. Charlize Theron. Shut. It. Down. In this Dior Couture number - we can't get enough. Red is hard to rock on the red carpet (for clashing reasons), but this hue definitely works. Add in that plunging neckline perfectly accessorised with that long, statement necklace, and you've got yourself a winning Oscars look. Brie Larson´s royal blue Gucci gown was a little bit Vegas-y, which was a nice change-up from the usual dresses sported by Best Actress winners. Larson, who took an award home for Room - pulled off a complex dress with simple accessories, including the most important one, a smile. I love the colour, the belt, the hair: it's perfection for the first time Oscar winner... the best dressed of the night in my opinion. Remember how we said we loved the simplicity of Tina Fey's gown? This is why. Reese Witherspoon's Oscar de la Renta dress, though similar to Tina's, is a bit too over-thetop with that visible boning on the bodice and the ruffled details in the bust it's a no no!
56 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 19
Alicia Vikander… aspects of this dress are gorgeous although it has been likened to Disney's Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I think the heavy balloon hem makes it look like “Bed, Bath, and Beyond” heavy. Although, if she took her Oscar and flopped down onto the nearest backstage couch, it probably made
for a wonderfully cozy nap. She has to look at this dress for the rest of her movie star life because she won her first Oscar in it although I am already tired of looking at it! She looks more like a 14-year-girl going to her first prom not an Oscar winning actress.

He always plays it cool with plain tees and stylish bottoms teamed with on trend footwear and manages to look effortlessly fashionable on red carpets (whilst picking up a lot of awards!) Here at Marbella Rocks HQ we are going to let you in on how to steal his style and where to buy the key garments from. 1. Style tip: Copy Calvin by fastening up just one button.

2. TOP All Saints Server U-Scoop T-Shirt in Ink Navy €35 A plain round neck tee is all you need to place under your blazer to create an off duty look. A tight fitting T-shirt often works better as it accentuates your body shape and doesn’t create any excess baggy material. This T-shirt from All Saints looks great in ink navy and works well with the black colours from the entire outfit. 3. JEANS Pull and Bear Washed Effect 5-Pocket Jeans €41.99 Jeans teamed with a blazer give off a cool image. The straight leg effect makes the outfit look less formal whilst still giving off an edge. This pair from Pull and Bear looks great with a shirt and a blazer as they have a washed-effect similar to Calvin's. 4. SHOES Lacoste Showcourt Perforated Trainers €126 Plain coloured trainer pumps fit this image, they have an element of both smart and casual and the shine of the leather makes for a perfect finish. for a while now. Think George Clooney or Jose Mourinho (pictured here) and you´ve got an idea of why the look has become so popular. Once a look reserved for ageing men – the connotations of Donald Trump and John Major have all but disappeared from this popular hue and now it seems to be both trendy and exciting to go grey. According to the New York Times, searches for grey hair dye have tripled while Google´s latest trend report detailed a 234% spike in searches for the term “silver hair”. Add to this the fact that mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith, model of the moment Lucky Blue Smith and Zayn Malik have all chosen to sport this shade, then you can see why more and more people are getting in on the trend. It´s also quite an ironic look to go for in young people too, turning the notion that grey is for old people on its head. This look shows the wearer is confident to wear a style previously suited to the ageing or silver fox brigade.
GET THE LOOK The thing to remember about going grey is that it’s not as easy as you would think. We need to achieve a colour that looks grey and not have hues of blue or violet (like Mrs Slocombe from Are You Being Served!) My client John was eager to be grey and we both agreed that it would really complement his new haircut. The colour process takes approximately 2 hours and consists of lightening the hair with bleach to very light pale yellow\white then rinsing and applying an anti yellow toner, then my secret grey colour cocktail mix.
UNDERCUT WITH TAPER Length on top but short tapered sides is a key trend for men this Spring/Summer. This variation of the undercut features a fade and taper to avoid the harsh undercut that used to be popular in the 90´s. We keep the hair long at the top to give a wavy and volumised look. This isn´t for the ’slap a bit of gel on and rush out of the house’ type of man – to properly achieve this look you will need to get comfortable with a hair dryer, brush and your favourite finishing product. We would recommend a working wax, Maneuver from Redken’s Mens range for a soft hold or the Molding Paste, Work Hard for a firmer hold.
UNDERCUT WITH TAPER MODERN SIDE PART
HAIR & BEAUTY
MODERN SIDE PART
We´ve seen resurgence in classic men´s cuts like the modern side parting pictured here. These classic and timeless looks will be going strong for the rest of the year. Easier to style than the tapered undercut with wavy look as hair is kept shorter on top and can be swept sideways. Easy enough to do after the shower and with a strong hold gel such as Extreme gel – Stand Tough in Redken’s men’s range or if you prefer a putty then Outplay by Redken is fantastic. However I must warn you to avoid this style if you are thinning on the recession area though as the side sweep will only accentuate your widow´s peak.

LONDON TO
MARBELLA
Zoe Wood is renowned for her colouring, cutting and hair extension skills and has clients travelling from all parts of the globe; England, Holland and the furthest afield from South Africa.
Now it's time, for the extensions. The salon uses Great Lengths hair extensions, which are made from the world's finest human hair. These are added not only for length but to give fullness to the ends of Karis' hair. Karis's own hair is very long but lacks the weight in the ends to be able to leave the hair straight or to curl. Three colours
are added to blend the hair to create the exact colour as Karis's hair. The extensions are so good, nobody realises they´re not real! Karis says, "I'm always told by everyone how beautiful my hair is, nobody realises it's actually not mine!!!” The difference with the extensions is amazing, when the hair is blow dried straight and smooth, the hair is full of body and the wispy ends have gone. They can be styled using heated tools and straighteners, there are no real limits to what you can do when wearing extensions. It is a myth that hair extensions damage the hair, applied correctly and a few basic maintenance tips are recommended ie. using the correct shampoo, conditioning mask and a leave in spray. By following the easy, but regular care programme, they can last up to four months. Karis's real hair is protected by the extensions, she no longer needs to overwork her own hair, causing less damage and this then rests her own ends, making it in better condition. Karis finished off her whirlwind trip to Marbella with a night out on the town with her mum. “You wouldn´t believe the amount of compliments I get about my hair,” Karis added. “Not only do the extensions look exactly like my natural hair, the condition and strength is amazing.”
AFTER
rejuvenated in between hair do's Olaplex can be used as a standalone treatment, leaving the hair feeling stronger, healthier and with a fantastic shine. While the colour is developing, it's lunch time, which Karis has ordered in from nearby Istan restaurant Small World Cafe, bringing salads for Karis and Liz to sit at the "loose women" style bar, specially created to sit and enjoy a glass of wine, while reading a magazine or working on the laptop.
DURING
BEFORE
One client Karis, who is a lawyer in London, travels at least 3 times a year to see Zoe for a total makeover on her hair. Now living in London, Karis eschews the cream of the crop of London salons to visit Zoe in Marbella to get the exact look she likes. "Wood Hairdressing is quite simply the best salon, Zoe is a true professional and everytime I walk away I feel like a million dollars. Why would I change or try to find a new hairdresser when I get everything I could possibly need or want from Zoe, who knows me well and gives me my perfect look,” she says. The appointment is always organised with plenty of time to make sure flights from London tie in with a whole day at Wood hairdressing. The day is started with coffees for both Karis and her Mum, Liz who comes along too. Firstly, the old hair extensions are removed. The hair is highlighted with 3 different colours, one to lift, to give a soft highlighted effect, also two lowlights, a caramel and chocolate, these give lots of movement and texture. Zoe uses Chromatics by Redken, the colour is oil based with no ammonia, so it's extremely conditioning for the hair. Added to the colour is the new treatment, Olaplex, this is the first treatment to reconnect broken disulphide bonds in the hair shaft. Olaplex actually rebuilds the broken bonds, preventing split ends and chemical damage from occurring in the first place. When Karis feels her hair needs to be

verywhere we look these days it seems there is a new fitness trend or fad diet circulating on social media and being rammed down our throats. I don't have a lot of time for most of them but also at the same time don't pass judgement on those that adopt them and enjoy it. But there is one thing that is being trended up and in turn starting to cost more. Coconut Oil. Like I said most of these trends pass under the water with me but when it comes to Coconut Oil, I just had to wade in with my opinion! It seems everything is Coconut right now, there is: • • • • •
Coconut butter Coconut water Coconut milk and cream Coconut flour Coconut soya sauce
But there is one King of the Coconut. Coconut Oil. This month I want to point out a few benefits and debunk some irritating myths about a great product that I've personally used for some time. First things first, a question I hear too often. "But Coconut oil is Saturated fat and bad for you no?" My usual answer is "show me the proof". It’s time to retire the decade old myth that saturated fat is in any way related to heart disease. It wasn’t proven in the past, it hasn’t been proven today and it never will be proven… because it’s just flat out wrong. In fact it's something that has been studied and disproven many times throughout the years but often blocked and brushed under the carpet. This usually happens when there are profitable alternatives. Traditional populations living in tropical areas have been consuming saturated fats, including sources of MCTs (read below) like coconut oil, for thousands of years without any ill effects so based on this alone aside from there being NO conclusive evidence, we can probably go ahead and consider the idea that a low-fat diet is “healthy” to be one of the biggest nutrition lies there ever was!
TYPES OF FAT IN COCONUT OIL Coconut oil is made up mostly of (perfectly fine) saturated fat but what we really want to appreciate is the high content of Medium Chain Triglycerides or MCT. Roughly 62–65% of the fatty acids in coconut oil are MCTs.
WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT MEDIUM CHAIN FATTY ACIDS? Medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFA’s) or more scientifically named "Medium chain Triglycerides" are easily digested, absorbed, and utilized by the body, while freely crossing the blood-brain barrier, which means it can be used by the brain as an energy source but also for neurological health.
88 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 19
HEALTH & FITNESS MCTs are believed to be largely missing from the day to day nutrition of people eating “standard Western” diets, most likely because the public has been led to believe that all forms of saturated fats are potentially harmful. However as I mentioned before, more recent research has shown a lot of evidence about the real truth regarding saturated fats. This is something to go into detail on another day but the info is out there if you wish to research. It is TV commercials and big companies that scaremonger about saturated fats and dangers of Cholesterol (don't get me started on this) not science. We now know that ideally MCT oils like coconut oil should actually be consumed every day. Certain saturated fats, especially MCTs and other healthy fats found in things like coconut oil or grass-fed beef, are in fact easier to digest than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) and might even have more benefits related to heart health, obesity prevention and brain health too. Aside from coconut oil, smaller amounts of MCTs can also be found in certain other foods with saturated fats including butter YES BUTTER (especially butter from grass-fed cows), cheeses, palm oil, whole milk and fullfat yogurt. Unrefined coconut oil is affordable (if you look in the right places), readily available, delicious and completely natural and has literally thousands of uses!! Ok I'm getting a little excited with that statement but look at all the potential benefits I'm going to list here.
(bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, parasites and protozoa) • An antioxidant (protects against free-radical formation and damage) • Improves nutrient absorption (easily digestible; makes fat-based vitamins more available to the body – i.e. vitamin A, D, E, K) • Nontoxic to humans and animals Sounds great right? But this stuff can be used for an unbelievable array of benefits. I burnt my scalp once curling my quiff ha-ha, my barber suggested I use coconut oil on my scalp and after one application the dryness and flakiness was gone. Check these out....... Age Spots (also known as liver spots) – applying coconut oil directly to the age spot will help it fade. After Shave – coconut oil will help heal your skin after shaving without clogging pores. Great for razor burn! Body Scrub – mix coconut oil and salt together and rub all over! Rinse off and your skin will be super soft. Bruises – applied directly to the bruise, coconut oil enhances the healing process by reducing swelling and redness.
Bug Bites – when applied directly to a bug bite, coconut oil can stop the itching and burning sensation as well as hasten the healing process. Burns – apply to burn site immediately and continue applying until healed. Will reduce the chances of permanent scarring and promotes healing. Chapstick – just rub a little into lips and it not only acts as a softening agent but it also has an SPF of about 4 so you get a little protection! Dandruff – coconut oil soaks into the scalp moisturising dry skin and relieves symptoms of dandruff. It also helps to control oil secretion from the scalp, another leading cause of dandruff. Eye cream – apply under the eyes to reduce puffiness, bags and wrinkles. Use on the lids in the evening. Healing – when applied on scrapes and cuts, coconut oil forms a thin, chemical layer which protects the wound from outside dust, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil speeds up
• Anti-carcinogenic (prevents the spread of cancer cells and enhances the immune system) • Anti-inflammatory • Anti-microbial/ Infection fighting

HEALTH & FITNESS the healing process of bruises by repairing damaged tissues. Plus, it smells a heck-of-a-lot better than anything from the pharmacy. Massage Oil – pretty simple; grab some and rub! Pre-Shave – coconut oil will prep skin for the pending damage caused by shaving. Skin Conditions – coconut oil can relieves skin problems such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. Stretch Marks – coconut oil is great at nourishing damaged skin. It may not be the magic stretch mark cure but it will help. Sun Burn Relief – rub liberal amounts of coconut oil into the affected area. Wrinkle Prevention and Wrinkle Reducer – rubbing coconut oil on winkles and sagging skin helps strengthen the connective tissues to bring back that youthful look! Bones and Teeth – coconut oil aids in the absorption of calcium and magnesium leading to better development of bones and teeth. Digestion – the saturated fats in coconut oil help control parasites and fungi that cause indigestion and other digestion related problems such as irritable bowel syndrome. The fat in coconut oil also aids in the absorption of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, making you healthier all around.

Fitness – coconut oil has been proven to stimulate your metabolism, improve thyroid function, and escalate energy levels, all of which help decrease your unwanted fat while increasing muscle. Insulin Support – Improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose making it great for both diabetics and non-diabetics. Lung Function – increases the fluidity of cell surfaces. Nausea – rub some coconut oil on the inside of the wrist and forearm to calm an upset stomach. Gum Health – oil pulling with coconut oil offers a two for one health benefit! Stress Relief – relieve mental fatigue by applying coconut oil to the head in a circular, massaging motion. The natural aroma of coconuts is extremely soothing thus helping to lower your stress level. Weight loss – the saturated fats contribute to weight loss and controlling cravings. Mental Cognition and Productivity – medium chain triglycerides freely pass the blood-brain barrier and allows an alternate source of energy to improve cognition. Acid Reflux/ Indigestion – if taken after a meal. Bowel function – constipation, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), gut infections Heart Disease – protects arteries from injury that causes atherosclerosis
Haemorrhoids – can be applied externally or internally twice a day Irritable Bowel Syndrome – alternating diarrhoea and constipation are key signs of IBS Kidney Disease and Stones – aids in dissolving small stones Menstruation Relief – regarding pain/ cramps and heavy blood flow Stomach Ulcers – helps soothe stomach lining and limit H. pylori growth Thyroid Function – can help regulate an overactive or underactive thyroid And there honestly are so much more known uses I could list if I had a whole issue to myself, including nutritional, medical, lifestyle, post natal and even pet care!
BOTTOM LINE Now regardless if you have all of the above issues or just like the taste in your cooking, over time it has become apparent that coconut oil should be your new best friend. Unfortunately as with most things that catch on it has become quite a trendy product and is appearing with fancy labels and a killer fashion price tag. Look around online for a good moderate priced virgin (unprocessed) oil and start ticking off the list of uses for it above! I'm sure you'll have it on your shelves for years to come. I love it!

Les Cubes Kalinka Malinka Restaurant RESTAURANT REVIEW
T
he stunning Les Cubes Kalinka Malinka Restaurant, set in the Golden Mile among the popular Oasis Club urbanisation, is definitely one of the finest dining experiences you will encounter here on the coast. The recently refurbished spot with an idealistic palm tree and beachfront setting definitely appeals to the more discerning diner. Each dish has been carefully thought out by the new head chef Tim Van Buchem who has recently swapped counting calories at the neighbouring 5* restaurant, Healthouse Las Dunas, to join the new team at Les Cubes. Before that he worked under the famous Dutch chef Schilo Van Coevodern at the world famous Finca Cortesin in Casares. Van Buchem has turned his artful hand into creating a menu that appeals to most Mediterranean taste buds. Plus, he also oversees the Cést La Vie Restaurant, where he is
94 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 19
able to bring more Asian influences into the menu. Van Buchem is originally from Indonesia but trained in Holland.
THE TASTING MENU Our testers were treated to the ultimate in tasting menus. A 6-course culinary extravaganza that definitely did not disappoint. The appetiser of smoked salmon marinated in vodka rolled in saffron mayonnaise on crisp bread was on point. This was shortly followed by a very colourful pickled mackerel fish with seasonal vegetables on a blackcurrent jus. It readily emerged that the food at Les Cubes tastes too good to eat - but we did anyway with gusto. Next up was a smoothly blended cauliflower and cream soup served with red prawns and pistachios. You would be forgiven for thinking that this food match doesn´t quite shape up but the flavours actually really
complimented each other. Definitely worth a try. We knew the tantalising main course was coming which was a succulent slow cooked chicken breast with a delicious almond sauce on a bed of quinoa and seasonal vegetables. Pure perfection and the meat and sauce were to die for. You can only imagine our shock (and delight) when the second meat course came out. A sizzling beef steak consisting of tenderloin and T-Bone on a spicy tomato sauce with lightly sautéed courgettes and asparagus complimented by a red wine jus. It should be mentioned here that after our plentiful four courses, with two more to come, that the portion sizes are not incredulous at Kalinika Malinka but not minute either. A perfect size to fully appreciate the flavours but not leave you wanting for more.
GASTRONOMY IN FOR A TREAT We knew dessert was going to be special. Taking all the tat out of the traditional Pina Colada cocktails – a pineapple comfit base was topped with Pina Colada sorbet (taken fresh from the bar that very day). This was garnished with a thinly sliced dried slice of crispy Pineapple. Absolutely superb. The following chocolate fondant definitely involved a repositioning of the belt buckle but it was all worth it. It was served with pistachio ice cream and raspberries to garnish. If you are attempting one of these at home we quizzed Van Buchem on how he made ours so perfectly, with a little bit crispy on the outside, ideally melted on the inside but no goey explosion on taking the first bite. The secret is to cook yours on a 180 degree heat for exactly 8 minutes. Thank us later.
IN SUMMARY Les Cubes, as well as having one of the finest menus and some of the most delicious food on the coast, has that extra something special. That “je ne sais quoi” when you walk in with high ceilings and modern art deco – aptly on the cube theme, you are mesmerised in the first 10 seconds. The Golden Mile beachfront scenery and also the service are second to none. This review could not be complete without a mention of the ever-attentive second in command Caesar who was on hand to attend our every whim and gave a superb wine match. So in summary we can say that this restaurant was absolutely faultless. If you haven´t yet tried Les Cubes – it´s a must.

TRUCK ART COMES TO SPAIN
Truck art is a cultural tradition in India, the process involves transforming long-haul vehicles into vibrant visuals of folk art. A new Spanish project is treating the side of large trucks as large blank canvasses not for advertisement purposes but purely for rolling street art for motorists. The trucks were recently featured at the International Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid and the 10 painted trucks began transporting art alongside goods on

Spanish commercial transport routes. The Truck Art Project features work from contemporary Spanish artists such as Okuda San Miguel on Spanish transport company Palibex’s fleet of trucks. This work of imagination is thanks to an initiative from Palibex CEO and art collector Jaime Colsa with collaboration from Madrid’s Iam Gallery. The project is ongoing and the organisers are hoping to turn up to 100 Spanish trucks into beautiful mobile art galleries.

aving a strong sense of positive connection with yourself stems from childhood. Nature provides us with neurons in the limbic system of the brain (the seat of emotional learning), that require nurturing from caregivers in order to develop. This neural circuitry develops within the first 12-18 months of life; the more nurturing that occurs, the more neurons fire and develop. British psychologist Bowlby´s evolutionary theory of attachment suggests that children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments with others, because this will help them to survive. He also believes that the nurturing and love that forms secure early infant attachments build our sense of safety and connection with ourselves. When infants and children do not get the nurturing and love they need to thrive, or traumas occur, this sense of safety can be damaged. The biggest obstacle to feeling safe with yourself, is lack of love. It may be that while there is a general sense of self-love and acceptance, hidden in the recesses of the subconscious mind, there are aspects that you do not truly accept. Common aspects that people find challenging to accept are parts of the self that may have been rejected, abused, neglected, hurt, or shamed. Perhaps the greatest challenge to these unaccepted aspects of the self is intimacy. In an intimate relationship, it is only natural that our fears of rejection, abuse, hurt, pain, separation or abandonment would be triggered. As an act of self-preservation, albeit subconsciously, our behaviours may sabotage our relationships, in order to aid emotional survival and keep these fears at bay. For example, fear can lead people to leave relationships, before they have been given a chance to flourish, for fear of a false belief about a potential rejection. Only when we feel truly safe inside, are we free to truly love, because there are no subconscious fears to guard from. In this sense, it is clear why you can never truly love another, until you truly love you. This is also true of feeling safe and being intimate with yourself; when we do not feel an inner sense of warmth, peace, safety, content, and love; measures may be made to ensure this alone time never happens through constant distraction. You can learn to love, or to love again, and create feelings of being safe within. There are three key practices to enable this:
PSYCHOLOGY
ACCEPT YOUR EMOTIONS Learning how accept, allow and manage all your emotions, enables you to grow from feeling afraid and needing an emotional crutch (people, drugs, food, alcohol, money, busyness, obsessions) to feeling safe with yourself. In learning to accept and manage your own emotions, you also become able to accept and manage the emotions of your partner and other people and so relationships and friendships flourish, as you too come life in a growing sense of self-love.
DISMANTLE FEARS There exists certain beliefs about your emotions and fears that are often hidden from view. By working with a coach or therapist, of through personal reflection time, you can identify these subconscious beliefs and heal them. Through the creation of new supportive beliefs, and affirmative actions, you can dismantle fears and learn to trust yourself, accept yourself and love yourself.
ACT IN A LOVING WAY TO YOURSELF This means valuing yourself as unique being, talking to yourself in a positive and encouraging way, doing what makes you happy, listening to your heart and honouring this truth, being authentically you and making your beliefs stronger than those others send your way. When you love, you love, and by nature of self-love, you naturally have more love to share with others and the world. Loving yourself is a gift to life.

MARCH
ASTROLOGY FORECAST 2016 Aries
Gemini
Leo
21 MAR – 20 APR A promise of new beginnings especially around romance could be part of your birthday celebrations this April, Aries. Certainly it’s time to look ahead and push forward with those goals especially around your career. We’re all blessed with mystical aspects this month but you especially can benefit from them when it comes to actual rewards for your efforts. Potential lovers seem drawn to you and when it comes to business you mix smart thinking with a go-getting attitude. Work it for the first three weeks of the month and then rest on your laurels. You don’t need to push love or work ventures after that. It’s all in motion for you, you lucky thing! Just make sure you look forward as opposed to backward Aries as this is your time to shine.
22 MAY – 21 JUNE Destiny changing connections can be made this April and it’s time to reach out and extend your social and/or professional circle. Above all, be on the look out for invitations or meet ups that connect you to people from many different backgrounds. The more diverse or different from your usual circles the better, in fact. The secret of so-called ‘lucky’ people is they cultivate friends from all walks of life and not just theirs. The fact is you never know how or from where that perfect opportunity or even partner is going to appear. The likelihood that it comes from one of your contacts is high. Others may change your destiny this month while you in turn change theirs. That’s how ‘coincidence’ which is in fact no coincidence at all, works.
24 JULY – 23 AUG Time to ditch whatever has been holding you back from realising your potential or just radiating that golden Leo glow. You and I know the world is full of people who just want to take the shine off things - in this case you. Circumstances conspire in all the right ways to set you free of anyone or anything that’s tarnished your progress of late. A surprise trip or journey could lead to either business success or else open your eyes to the truth that’s right in front of you. Don’t be surprised if an actual person acts as the catalyst for all of this. They could be confident, have a touch of sexy adventurer about them and just radiate what can only be called ‘star quality’ in some way. This is a person designed to stand out. What they are here to show you - aside from lots of attention, is the same qualities you have been hiding away in yourself.
Taurus
Cancer
Virgo
21 APR – 20 MAY Secrets emerge ahead of your birthday but you need to see this as part of the spiritual de-cluttering process that occurs for all of us just prior to our new cycle. No matter what gets revealed you don’t need to take anything or anyone that holds you back into the fabulous new potential that’s being generated for you now. People or even a lover from you past could appear to either come back in, give you closure and then exit for good or else you both realise there’s more still between you than you may have thought. Others could be about to grasp an opportunity that puts them in the spotlight or else be in exactly the right place at the right time to make that magical connection. Accept all invitations whether professional or personal. Life says now is the time to celebrate. Enjoy!
22 JUNE – 23 JULY Surprise twists and turns in career matters or even partnership ventures could leave you breathless in all the right ways this April, Cancer. Doors that you have been knocking on for some time could now open of their own accord or better yet, doors that you didn’t even know existed now swing wide offering fresh opportunities. The end of the month sees you in a romantic mood and singles could just attract someone to flirt with under the light of the full Moon. Don’t be surprised if you feel an intense spiritual connection to a prospective lover who may also come from far, far away - either literally or even from your past. Keep an eye open for times in both your stories when you almost connected but didn’t. This tells you now’s the time to make a little love karma together.
24 AUG – SEPT 3 Whatever you can dream up for yourself this month, the universe may just show you that it can dream bigger! By all means set yourself goals or follow that vision. But once you have set the wheels in motion then let go of what you think the destination is or more importantly, how you think you will get there. April sees many opportunities placed in your path and the only problem you could encounter when it comes to taking advantage of them is your own idea around what success or that ideal lover looks like. Don’t fall into the trap of preconception now as usually there isn’t a neon sign flashing above what your heart most needs that says: This is it! If you think of your journey as the goal itself and just now follow up on whoever or whatever you encounter no matter what it initially looks like, you could end up fulfilling a dream.

Libra
Sagittarius
Aquarius
24 SEPT – 23 OCT Love and partnership matters shine and this includes all kinds of partnership experiences whether they are business, activity, collaborative or even a deep friendship. Agents could also play a key role now but when it comes to romance you’re seeking someone who offers depth and substance and also someone you can look up to on some level. Lightweights or those who just don’t take themselves or you for that matter, seriously need not apply. You’ve an opportunity this month to cement something for the long term. Whether this is a financial matter or a matter of the heart, this sets the scene for the long term future. This is a key month for you Librans so my advice is to get out there and seize it.
23 NOV – 21 DEC It’s all about what you have already set in motion rather than starting something new this month. Finish off existing projects and if anything needs to be submitted or sent out, then ensure you do this before the month is out. What April is out to teach you is that if it doesn’t happen now, then it’s time to step back and think about a new goal or a fresh direction to commit to. You’ve done all you can and if you don’t get the results you hoped for, at least take the experience with you and use it to get a different result on a new venture. Don’t see any result as a waste. Others however could get just what they hoped for. If you do have to invest your talents or love into something new then take your time deciding which direction you should move in next.
21 JAN – 19 FEB News could send you on an unexpected journey or a project or new romance could take a surprising twist. Don’t plan too far ahead this month or if you do, remain flexible and don’t be afraid to change those plans if offered something better. Surprises and thrills offer more twists and turns than a rollercoaster and your social life may have you scrambling to keep up. Extra hours cold be put in at work with additional money to be earned. It’s important however that you don’t burn the candle at both ends or end up feeling depleted. Prioritise some down time or even schedule a spa visit to recharge. Running on empty means you can’t enjoy what’s on offer to the full.
Scorpio
Capricorn
Pisces
24 OCT – 22 NOV You’re seeking someone with whom you can share your ideas now and if present company doesn’t supply that, you’ll attract those who can. Existing relationships deepen if you have a vision or goal you can both commit to. Concentrate on work and money matters for the first three weeks of April as afterwards you may be content to coast or else you could find that you have to work harder than usual to increase your cash flow. When it comes to having a good time however, you’ll see that how much money and how much fun you have are not necessarily dependent on one another. The lesson could be on how you use what resources you have as opposed to how much you have. When it comes to friends and enjoyment however, there’s no shortage of either. It’s all down to what price you put on good company.
22 DEC – 20 JAN Right now you’re more than usually aware of the results of your actions as you are living with the implications of your past decisions. You’ve either planned correctly or else see choosing differently is necessary for the future. When it comes to friends or even lovers now, you’ll see these for what they are as well. If someone has a hidden side it will be exposed and you’ll either like what you see or else look on in dismay. It’s time to choose those who you associate with or most importantly, love, carefully now as these decisions too will be with you for a long time to come. New connections can be made but hold back on going all in or giving your heart away. Take your time and wait for the ‘real’ them to emerge. Believe me, you’ll be glad you did.
20 FEB – 20 MAR Romance seekers could be seduced by someone’s mind and ideas first and foremost. You’re so intrigued by what this person has to say that you may fall fast even if they are not your usual ‘type’. If you do have a ‘type’ look back and ask yourself where this has got you? Maybe something new is just what you need. Time to apply for that new job or to send out any pitches, projects, manuscripts or communication pieces of your own. Good news around business or something you have been working on could be about to arrive. When it comes to that lover talking their way into your heart however, ensure they don’t just talk a good game but are prepared to bring it too. After all, actions speak louder than words.
