CELEBRITIES EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT The British Royals have never been big fans of the press, especially after the hounding of Princess Di by paparazzi, so this could be the reason why Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, is rumoured to be on the royal bad side right now. Apparently the sister-in-law of Prince William is in the process of procuring a job as a correspondent on the NBC’s ‘The Today Show’. Pippa made her debut appearance on ‘The Today Show’ in an interview with Matt Lauer in June, where she chatted over tea about her sister the Duchess, as well as her nephew, the future king of England. This show gave a huge rating high for the network, which may explain their eagerness to get Pippa involved on a more permanent basis. The industry gossip extends even further, with rumours of a possible involvement with ABC too. However, an ABC News spokesperson denied rumours that the network also offered Pippa a job at ‘Good Morning America’, but admitted that ABC did ask for an on-camera interview. NBC, in the meantime have confirmed Pippa’s involvement with them as a “giving it a try” situation rather than a long-term commitment. Even so, the idea that Pippa will be working as some type of correspondent has caused anger in NBC employee circles too. At a time where layoffs and budget cuts in the television news business are rife, this is not good news to humbler employees. It’s all too reminiscent of the Chelsea Clinton story, where the presidential daughter apparently received a scandalous salary of $600,000 a year for doing scant work for the NBC. The network’s past preferential treatment roster has involved not only Ms. Clinton but Jenna Bush, Princess Diana’s younger brother Charles Spencer, as well as Sarah Ferguson, the ex-Duchess of York. So it appears that Pippa’s latest career move is not being applauded on either side of the Atlantic.“They are

8

furious with Pippa,” an aristocratic source was quoted as saying of the British Royal Family. “They wish that she would shut up. It is obvious that she wants to define her identity and step out of her sister’s shadow. However, she needs to know her place.” This is not the first time there’s been tension between Kate and Pippa either. A year ago, Kate reportedly asked Pippa to step out of the limelight for a bit. At the time, she’d been attending a lot of high-profile events, and was also writing for several magazines including Vanity Fair. People are wondering if Pippa’s on her way to becoming another Fergie, who caused much aggravation to the monarchy, capitilizing on her posh relations… Oh dear.

Britney Spears Dating Again She’s not had much luck in the love department but this time she maybe onto a winner. Spears posted a loved up picture of her and her new entrepreneur and TV/film mogul boyfriend, Charlie Ebersol, on her Instagram account. Spears went for the hashtag #thesweetest while Ebersol opted for #happiness. The pair have only been dating for a few weeks having met through mutual friends but according to a close friend they are “very happy together and having fun.” “He is the sweetest guy ever and they are very much enjoying getting to know one another,” the insider said. Spears has had her fair share of public love splits. Who could forget Justin Timberlake’s dig at Britney cheating in his ‘Cry Me A River’ video, Jason Alexander; who she divorced after a after a drunken Vegas wedding in 2004, Keven Federline whom she divorced in 2007 (we won’t even go there.) Plus she was engaged to former manager Jason Trawick and more recently dated a bartender who cheated on her. Let’s hope for Britney this relationship lasts the distance.

Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves

NEWS Jessie J And Luke James Go Public Jessie J and R&B singer Luke ‘Wolf ’ James are dating and the ‘Bang Bang’ singer hasn’t stopped posting loved up snaps on her Instagram page for the world to see. The pair met in New York where Jessie is working on cracking the US market and Luke is an established singer and songwriter, although he’s originally from New Orleans. “He’s incredible,” she gushed. “Teamwork makes the dream work whenever I have time off or he has time off.” Calling her recent bisexuality “a phase” after dating both men and women, Jessie has said publicly: “I just got to a point where I felt like it was affecting my life and my career, being branded as something I’ve never said that I was. I don’t want to be labelled, and that’s it, really.” At the time Jessie said that she was still a firm believer in LGBT rights, as she tweeted: “I did and still do stand for love who you love, whichever gender that is.”

KELLy HAS A BABY BOY Tinseltown has welcomed a tidy sum of tots this year, with the latest bundle of joy being born to former ‘Destiny’s Child’ singer Kelly Rowland. Baby Titan Jewell Witherspoon made his world debut on the 4th of November to Kelly Rowland and her husband Tim Witherspoon. “We are thrilled to announce that today we are the proud parents of our first son,” Kelly announced. Throughout her pregnancy, Rowland blissfully displayed her baby bump, even posting bare belly photos on Instagram. She also proudly posed for a totally naked spread for Elle, expressing, “It’s really — I won’t say amazing — it’s Godmazing watching your body carry a human… The body should be celebrated.”

CLOONEY WEDDING CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE This was the at-home version. For the family and friends who couldn’t make it to Italy for the Clooney-Alamuddin nuptials a month ago, the couple did it a second time around, in English style, the last weekend of October. The parents of the new Mrs Clooney, Ramzi and Baria Alamuddin, hosted a lavish dinner celebration on the

banks of the Thames to celebrate the marriage of their daughter to the esteemed Mr Clooney. The Danesfield House Hotel restaurant in Marlow-On-Thames is said to be a favourite of Mr and Mrs Alamuddin, who live nine miles away in Gerrard’s Cross. Danesfield House, which dates to 1725, is located on 65 acres of beautifully manicured English gardens and overlooks the Thames River. Among the notable features of the historical abode are Tudor-style towers, historic tapestries and ornate ceilings. The hotel’s Michelin-starred kitchen, under the leadership of executive chef Billy Reid, formerly of L’Escargot in London, whipped up a sumptuous menu for the affair, which included foie gras or smoked salmon starters; roasted fillet of beef, sea bass or a risotto for mains; and mousse au chocolat or a strawberry tart for dessert. So while the Venice nuptials were awash with famous faces like those of Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Bill Murray, Bono and Matt Damon, this guest list was jammed with the names of people unknown to the world, yet important in the life of Mrs Clooney: Amal’s friends from Oxford and friends of the Alamuddin family who’ve known her since she was a little girl. There was not one A-list Hollywood name there other than George’s. One could wonder what erstwhile law students and Lebanese cousins could chat about with the worldrenown Hollywood heartthrob. Was it perhaps an evening of awkward, stilted conversations? Absolutely not. Mr Clooney apparently loves spending time with his new wife’s friends, who have been described by sources as a “really cultured, interesting gang of people.” Makes sense as Amal herself is a highly respected human rights lawyer whose clients have included Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, the former prime minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko and presently, the Greek government in its fight for the return of the Elgin Marbles.

NEWS If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

RECIPE

JOOLS´ FAVOURITE BEEF STEW A fantastic warming beef stew that uses root vegetables that cook gently into the stew. Packed with flavour and great for those colder winter nights. Named Jools’ after Jamie Oliver’s wife as it’s her favourite dish of his.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Ingredients: olive oil 1 knob butter 1 onion, peeled and chopped 1 handful fresh sage leaves 800 g quality stewing steak or beef skirt, cut into 5cm pieces flour, to dust 2 parsnips, peeled and quartered 4 carrots, peeled and halved ½ butternut squash, halved, deseeded and roughly diced 500 g small potatoes 2 tablespoons tomato purée ½ bottle red wine 285 ml organic beef or vegetable stock finely grated zest of 1 lemon 1 handful rosemary, leaves picked 1 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped

1.Preheat the oven to 160ºC/300ºF/gas mark 2 2. Put a little oil and your knob of butter into an appropriately sized pot or casserole pan. Add your onion and all the sage leaves and fry for 3 or 4 minutes. 3.Toss the meat in a little seasoned flour, then add it to the pan with all the vegetables, the tomato purée, wine and stock, and gently stir together. Season generously

24 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02 06

with freshly ground black pepper and just a little salt. 4.Bring to the boil, place a lid on top, then cook in the preheated oven until the meat is tender. Sometimes this takes 3 hours, sometimes 4 – it depends on what cut of meat you’re using and how fresh it is. The only way to test is to mash up a piece of meat and if it falls apart easily it’s ready. 5.The best way to serve this is by ladling big spoonfuls into bowls and some really fresh, warmed bread. Mix the lemon zest, chopped rosemary and garlic together and sprinkle over the stew before eating. Just the smallest amount will make a world of difference – as soon as it hits the hot stew it will release an amazing fragrance.

FOOD & WINE MATCH

WINE MATCH When thinking about wines to pair with Beef Stew, Pinot Noir immediately comes to mind. However, one can expand the list to include Cabernet Sauvignon,

Merlot, or any other red wine that has sufficient tannins to counter the rich and tender stewed beef. My favourite classic pairing is red Bordeaux with the earthy aromas and dark berry fruit that complement the earthy stewed flavors of the dish. But all of the grape varieties above would be great matches for this slow cooked meal. Try and use the same wine for the ingredients, as you buy to accompany the meal. If you have chosen a premium wine for the occasion, then use the same grape variety in the meal. Preferably, buy the secondary offering from the same producer.

NEWS DVD RELEASES OF THE MONTH

MALEFICENT

The classic fairytale of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is turned on its head as the evil sorceress Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, becomes the main focus of the film. Her story is explored in depth so audiences finally come to understand what it was that drove her to go to such drastic lengths to wreak misery in Princess Aurora’s life. (An undertaking that Walt Disney would never have explored in the 1959 version!) Maleficent’s past is marked with tragedy and unhappiness, having been betrayed by the man she loved and becoming an outcast. While her malicious actions are inexcusable, it becomes possible to understand how she might have been driven to them, which is enough to generate sympathy for her evil character. Established characters are dusted off and examined in new light to help round out a story that people may not understand as well as they think.

BOOK REVIEW

DAWN OF THE REVIVAL PLANET OF THE APES Another masterpiece from ‘It’ This has to be the most emotional and hard-hitting film in the trilogy of the ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise. The primate versus human story continues ten years since the release of the Simian virus that has almost wiped out the human race on earth. Caesar, leader of the apes, and his civilization of genetically advanced apes have taken over the world and are beginning to grow and spread over the earth. A small group of humans that survived the deadly virus are discovered and a wary peace has been made between the two groups. The peace unfortunately has no chance of surviving as the two groups inevitably head for the conflict that will eventually determine who controls the future of the planet.

author Stephen King comes in the form of this rich and disturbing novel that spans five decades. The story starts in a small New England town in early 1960. A young boy called Jamie Morton forges an unlikely friendship with Charles Jacobs, the new minister. Jacobs along with his beautiful wife transform the local church. The men and boys are in love with Mrs Jacobs; and the women and girls including Jamie’s mother and sister - feel the same about Jacobs. Jamie and the Reverend share a deeper bond, based on their fascination with simple experiments in electricity. Then tragedy strikes the Jacobs family. The preacher curses God, mocking all his religious beliefs and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. In his mid-thirties, he is living a nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll. Addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate, he sees Jacobs again - a showman on stage, creating dazzling ‘portraits in lightning’ - and their meeting has profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact and Jamie discovers that revival has many disturbing meanings. A taught, tense, page-turning thriller that proves King’s definitely still got what it takes.

SOTOGRANDE

Surviving the Boom & Bust by James Stewart

W

hen I turned off the narrow old coast road thirty-two years ago, and onto a tree-lined avenue leading to Royal Sotogrande Golf Club and the sea, I knew that I was entering somewhere special. But Sotogrande is not only special, it is different. It is different because there is nowhere else in Europe that can offer such wonderful sporting and residential facilities within a unique family environment. Two years ago Sotogrande celebrated its 50th anniversary and fifty years that it can be proud of. With Valderrama Golf Club as the host club, Sotogrande is the only destination outside the USA and British Isles that has staged the Ryder Cup. The world of polo disembarks in Sotogrande every summer for the finest events in the European calendar; the 1997 World Hobie Cat Sailing Championships were held at the Sotogrande Yacht Club and earlier this year the newest of Sotogrande’s five golf courses, La Reserva, hosted a European Tour golf tournament. Sotogrande’s tennis academy, SotoTennis, is Spain’s newest tennis academy and is going great guns while the equestrian centre provides excellent show jumping and dressage facilities. The International School is gaining a great reputation worldwide and its 700 pupils from all over the world are graduating with splendid results. There is surely no prettier residential marina in the whole Mediterranean, partly due to the fact that Sotogrande built its reputation on ignoring high-density development, instead concentrating on creating a

secure leisure resort where luxury homes could be built with open space as a premium. Contained in an area covering over 2000 hectares, Sotogrande boasts some of the finest houses in Spain and there is room for plenty more to come. After twenty years of solid progress, the Sotogrande property market had a big boost in 1985 when the nearby Gibraltar airport and frontier was opened, making Sotogrande even more accessible for UK buyers. Just over ten years later, the enormous publicity created by the Ryder Cup brought another wave of buyers, which fortunately coincided with the completion of the motorway to Marbella and Malaga airport. By now, however, we were well immersed in the infamous Spanish property bubble and the pace of sales reached previously unattained levels. Despite this, the marina residential development was completed and over 1000 apartments sold but good planning meant that when the bubble finally burst in 2008 there was no sign of unfinished buildings and endless repossessed bank stock. Sotogrande was different again. The perfect storm that the ‘Great Recession’ brought has, of course, had its effect on the Sotogrande property market. It did lie dormant for five years as demand fell and prices corrected accordingly to about 35% below the top of the market in 2007. As we came out of last winter, it seemed clear that the market had finally picked up. We were seeing two clients battling over one property again, which was a forgotten phenomenon and we gradually started to see a property

market reappear. Buyers, particularly from the UK, were slowly returning and looking with interest, but not in haste, sensing that now was the time to buy again. As we found ourselves witnessing a small increase in activity as confidence returned, it was very welcome news to hear just two weeks ago that NH Hotels had sold Sotogrande to two investment funds: Cerberus and Orion Capital. Whilst we wait for the new owners to take possession of their prized asset, there is high expectation in the air. It is felt that we are about to see fresh investment and management taking Sotogrande to even higher levels of excellence and a new confidence emerging which will give Sotogrande the boost it needs for the property market to gain some very real momentum. Sotogrande is special, it is different and we are surely heading for great times again.

ime Pictures, the English TV production company behind ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘Geordie Shore’ are just wrapping up filming a pilot here in Marbella. The cast members have been confirmed as model Natalie Denning-Richardson, holistic teacher Hollie Rolla, beautician Cassie Anne Rowan, fashion entrepreneur Felicity Faye Kidd and Marbella-based fashion stylist, columnist and personal shopper, Zahra Anderson. According to insiders it’s tipped to be an extremely entertaining show. With a group of girls as the central characters, expect to see lots of bare flesh and bitching! The pilot will feature a big bust-up between outspoken stylist Zahra and fashion darling Felicity. The girls come to loggerheads over Felicity Faye Kidd’s bandage style dresses, with Zahra refusing to put what she calls “outdated designs” in a fashion show she is collaborating on. Understandably, Felicity is not too impressed by Zahra’s critique of her burgeoning business and the pair fall out – big Marbella style. While Lime have been criticised in the past for allegedly scripting a lot of the scenes on ‘TOWIE’, Marbella Rocks can reveal this argument was real and the big bust-up was by no means scripted. Ah, a real reality TV series… how refreshing!

WHY MARBELLA?

Marbella has been the central vacation destination to shoot ITV2 spin-off show ‘The Only Way Is Marbs’ for a number of years. While Brentwood in Essex is the main filming location for the original ‘TOWIE’, the

producers were so impressed with Marbella, its nightlife and colourful characters they thought it was about time Marbella had its homegrown reality TV series. A number of famous Marbella faces were approached to star in the series but turned Lime Pictures down. Among them were Lineker’s marketing manager and Hot Magazine columnist Lina Hodgkins, Aqwa Mist and Ultima Promotions director Phil Savage and News Café and Living Room owner Nicholas Cohen. There are also two male characters that feature briefly in the pilot, including Max who works at Golden Tarts and another Marbella-based character Andre, although producers are still unclear whether they will play a pivotal role in the TV series. It is also still not clear exactly which British TV channel has been approached to buy the rights to the series but it is likely to be ITV2 or MTV, because of ‘TOWIE’ and ‘Geordie Shore’ that work respectively with Lime Pictures. Channel 4 could also be a likely contender as they have worked closely with Lime on the TV series ‘Hollyoaks’ for 15 years. If the pilot is snapped up (which reliable sources strongly hint at) then filming will begin in summer 2015, with the series going out in late August or September 2015. Lime Pictures confirmed the pilot but were unable to provide further comment at this stage.

It’s certainly been an eventful 2014 - both personally and professionally for actress Jennifer Lawrence.

S

he has graced the front pages of countless magazines and newspapers because of the nude photo scandal where more than 60 images of her were hacked from a private account and shared to the world. Plus her blossoming relationship with ‘Coldplay’ frontman Chris Martin, after his split from wife Gwyneth Paltrow, has made her regular tabloid fodder. However, what’s completely refreshing about Lawrence, or J-Law as she has become affectionately known, is her “not giving a sh*t attitude” and her love of speaking her mind. For this she has been aptly nicknamed “America’s MotorMouthed Sweetheart.” (See overleaf for the best J-Law quotes for proof of her off-the-cuff honesty.) When most Hollywood movie stars would be hiding in shame after the world has seen them naked, Lawrence is out in full force in more revealing outfits than ever. She continues too with her unabashed honesty, never shying from the truth or trying to paint her actions in a rosy-coloured hue. She even admitted to having had several alcoholic shots at the Oscars this year to calm her nerves, which resulted in her puking on Madonna’s stairs at the after-show party. Ooops… Professionally, 2014 has definitely been Lawrence’s year. Hot on the heels of her Oscar win for Best Actress in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ she picked up a Golden Globe and a

Bafta Award for her performance in hit film ‘American Hustle’.

She has also been crowned the ‘Sexiest Woman in the World’ by FHM in its annual poll and has a staggering six films coming out in a short space of time: including the hugely anticipated Hunger Games: ‘Mockingjay Part 1’ this month and her second ‘X- Men’ instalment in early 2015. She has also made it to the Forbes List of Top American Earners, only second on the list to Sandra Bullock as the highest paid female acting star. It is staggering to think that Lawrence has almost tipped 50-yearold Bullock who has been churning out hit movies for over 25! In comparison, Lawrence is only 24 and has only been making films for only five years.

RISING STAR Jennifer Lawrence was born in Kentucky to working class parents, her mum Karen worked at a summer camp and her dad Gary was a construction worker. From an early age she wanted to pursue a career in Hollywood, convincing her parents to take her to New York to find a talent agent. After a few stints on a minor US television series, Lawrence shot to fame in the 2010 film ‘Winter’s Bone’. At only 19 she was the second youngest person ever to receive an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress.

The film won Best Film at The Sundance Film Festival and Lawrence, who played 17-yearold Ree Dolly, who cares for her mentally ill mother and brother, was cited as the main reason behind it’s success. “Her performance is more than acting, it’s a gathering storm. Lawrence’s eyes are a roadmap to what’s tearing Ree apart,” Rolling Stone Magazine wrote at the time. Although she didn’t win the Oscar in 2010, her stock was on the rise and she was offered the lead in the hugely successful franchise of ‘Hunger Games’ films. Despite being a fan of the books, Lawrence apparently took three days to accept the role because she was intimidated by the size of the movie and how it might affect her career.

The first film was released in March 2012 and took a record breaking $152 million within three days of opening. The success of ‘The Hunger Games’, and Lawrence as its leading lady, Katniss Everdeen, was also the key to breaking up the malecentric nature of action films. Prior to ‘The Hunger Games’, among the Top 200 Worldwide Box Office hits ever, not one had been built around a female action star. Lawrence had to undergo severe training schedules for the film including taking up stunt training, archery, rock and tree climbing,

FEATURES combat, martial arts, running, pilates and yoga. And she’s admitted she’s not a natural sportswoman so to complete this grueling training regime was no mean feat. Throughout her career, Lawrence has been praised as being the chameleon of actresses, playing serious roles as well as action roles and even breaking into comedy. Her most critically acclaimed film so far was the small budget but big box office hitter ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. Here Lawrence played the recently widowed, quirky character Tiffany Maxwell alongside the hunky Bradley Cooper. Critics said of her performance: “She’s rude, dirty, funny, foulmouthed, sloppy, sexy, vibrant, and vulnerable, sometimes all in the same scene, even in the same breath. No list of Best Actress Oscar contenders would be complete without the electrifying Lawrence in the lead. She lights up the screen.”

TABLOID HEADLINES Lawrence has been one of the most newsworthy stars of 2014, although not always for the right reasons. In August, she was the first actress

to become involved in the nude celebrity photo scandal, now known as the largest hacking scandal in history. Over 60 images of Lawrence nude or partially nude were hacked from

06 36 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

her iCloud account and posted on sites including Reddit, 4 Chan and Twitter. Although the images have since been removed, they were spread far and wide before being taken down. In a blatant hacking and invasion of privacy case, Lawrence is said to be pursuing legal action against the hacker in a case that could be worth up to $60 million. She is paving the way for other stars to follow suit. The charges are a highly publicised move that will if nothing else, prove to women that they don’t have to take something like this lying down. While hundreds of other stars including Kim Kardashian, Hayden Panettiere, Amber Heard and Rihanna have also been targeted, no other stars have started pursuing legal action yet.

LOVE LIFE Until recently Lawrence has managed to keep her love life relatively low key. She dated her ‘X-Men’ co-star Nicholas Hoult for almost 3 years. (He was also the lead child actor in ‘About a Boy’ – remember?!.) Hoult and Lawrence met on the set of their first film together ‘ X-Men: First Class’ in 2011. It’s thought that conflicting work schedules meant that the couple rarely got to see each other. Lawrence worked on ‘The Hunger Games’ in the US while Hoult worked on ‘Kill Your Friends’ in the UK. The last straw was apparently when Lawrence missed going to the Wireless Festival in London with him earlier this year, choosing to go to a Dior fashion show instead. “Nicholas was pretty upset she opted

out of seeing him as they rarely ever got to hang out,” a friend said. Maybe it was more than a missed meeting. Lawrence has made no secret of the fact that she is a massive Coldplay fan. In July, around the same time as the aforementioned Wireless Festival, Lawrence attended a Coldplay gig and was reportedly was seen singing along to every word and gaining Martin’s attention as she was doing so.

The pair then met up at the Kensington Roof Gardens where they spent the entire evening talking and flirting with one another, according to bystanders. Fast-forward four months and the couple still appear to be going strong. Although not regularly papped out together like some celeb couples, she has been there to support him at three of his recent gigs and the pair have jetted off to Vegas together for a weekend break. Sources close to the couple claim this could be the real thing, hinting that a wedding could be on the cards. Well one thing’s for sure if Gwyneth’s macro-biotic, clean living lifestyle was one of the reasons for the couple “unconsciously coupling”, then Martin has definitely met the exact opposite in Lawrence, who drinks, smokes and swears like a trooper. Good luck to them.

22 Of The Best Jennifer Lawrence Quotes Ever America’s motor-mouthed sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most quotable treasures ever given to Hollywood. In an era of media-savvy, overly-censored stars, she has become affectionately known for pretty much saying whatever comes to mind. Her ‘Hunger Games’ co-star Lenny Kravitz said, “She’ll say anything. Anything.” While her other co-star Liam Hemsworth says, “There’s no filter with Jennifer. She says whatever she wants, whenever she wants!” On what she does in her free time: “If I don’t have anything to do all day, I might not even put my pants on.” On her talents in life: “I’m the fastest pee-er ever. I’m famous for it.” On her workout routine: “I hate saying, ‘I like exercising’ - I want to punch people who say that.” On meeting Woody Harrelson for the first time: “Hi Woody, I’m J – is that a sex swing?” (It was a yoga swing)

I look like Gumby getting electrocuted.” On how she chooses her roles: “I never play characters that are like me because I’m a boring person. I wouldn’t want to see me in a movie.” On her sense of humour: “As soon as somebody farts around me, I think it’s hilarious. This is something my brothers did, that now the boys at work are obsessed with. You cup it, and then you throw it in someone’s face and say, ‘Take a bite out of that cheeseburger!’” On the contents of her Oscar’s purse: “Candy, almonds, my phone, a Baby Ruth, Laffy Taffy.” On how she prepares for the red carpet: “It’s so scary. And then I end up getting so nervous that I get really hyper. So then I go in interviews and I’m like, ‘I’m like a chihuahua! I’m shaking and peeing!’ And then afterwards, I’m like, ‘I just talked about peeing on the red carpet...’” On her much publicised weight ‘struggles’: “I’d rather look chubby on screen and like a person in real life.” On partying at the Oscars: “I stopped at Harvey Weinstein’s party for a little bit, got my parents drunk, and then I left and went home.” On her flying routine: “I always feel like an idiot every time I fly first class because I’m a kid. My breasts have a life of their own.” On having babies: “I think all mothers are a nightmare - I don’t think you can have children and not lose your goddamn mind!” On setting up dates for ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ co-star Bradley Cooper: “I feel like all I’ve been doing lately is setting him up. had tips for job interviews, because I was like, ‘I need to get better at interviews’. The article was basically about how to get someone not to hate you in 20 minutes. Every single thing they told you not to do, I was like, ‘I do that every day!’” On being starstruck: “Once I’m obsessed with somebody, I’m terrified of them instantly. I’m not scared of them - I’m scared of me and how I will react. Like, for instance, one time someone was introducing me to Bill Maher, and I saw Meryl Streep walk into the room, and I literally put my hand right in Bill Maher’s face and said, ‘Not now, Bill!’ and I just stared at Meryl Streep. I just creepily stared at her.” On Victoria’s Secret declaring that she had the sexiest eyes: “Eyes?! What? From Victoria’s Secret? I thought it was going to be like boobs or butt or something. WORLD EVENTS T H I S I S T H E M O N T H T H AT WA S

The Sandy Hook Massacre The American primary school massacre that shocked the entire world in December two years ago, will be relived in memory by the inhabitants of Sandy Hook this month.

O

n December 14th 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza took a shotgun into his local comprehensive school and gunned down 20 children and six teachers. He also shot his mother Nancy four times, before turning the gun on himself when police surrounded the building.

It was the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in American history after the Virginia Tech Massacre and the second deadliest mass murder at a US

elementary school after the Bath School Bombings in Michigan. As the second anniversary of this fateful day approaches, people are finding ways of coping. The majority of people agree that the Lanzas’ home should be knocked down and replaced with a park or nature reserve. However the property still remains tied up in probate court proceedings two years on. Since the massacre, much has been discussed about the US gun laws and Obama even waded into the huge debate in his first few months of presidency. But with America’s progun lobby and its massive support system, there were the expected mixed reactions. Obama met with the senate about stricter gun laws coming into existence in 2012, but

it wasn’t until January 2014 that the Connecticut judicial system passed a law restricting the ownership of assault weapons. It was hailed as a victory for the parents and population of Sandy Hook. On a more poignant and personal level, over the past two years, individuals, businesses and communities have joined forces to honour the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy and keep their memories alive. The ‘Where Angels Play’ foundation has constructed 26 playgrounds as living memorials to each of the victims. The playgrounds, at a cost of $75,000 to $100,000 each, have been funded from corporate and private donations. Each playground reflects the personality of the teacher or child for whom it is named.

The playground structure at Long Lots Elementary School honouring the autistic Dylan Hockley is replete with butterflies, moons, and symbols of autism awareness, and captures what the Hockley family most

wanted to convey in memory of their son. The last park in the ‘Where Angels Play’ project was completed in October this year in honor of Sandy Hook principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung.

“We are celebrating the lives of those that were lost by incorporating their unique interests,” New Jersey firefighter and project leader Bill Lavin said. “This is most rewarding thing I’ve ever been a part of.” “The heroes of this project are the mums and dads and wives and husbands of Sandy Hook who, while suffering maybe the worst tragedy imaginable, had the courage, strength and generosity of spirit to give to others,” he said. “When you think of heroes, think of people who, while they’re hurting themselves, they pay it forward.”

A

dam’s father Peter Lanza recently broke his silence to talk about this chilling crime. He described his son as “evil, an outsider, strange and socially unaccepted.” He wishes he had never raised this boy as his whole childhood was reaped with strange behavioural problems that he and his wife Nancy could never figure out. Peter was CEO of a large successful firm, Nancy was an honest, hard working teacher while Adams older brother Ryan was a popular and successful child. Peter still doesn’t know to this day what triggered Adam to go into an infant school and kill so many innocent children. He was always interested in violent computer games and signed up to several off kilter Nazi supporting internet sites. Peter has said he wants other parents to know that this could easily happen to them.

llie Pozner recalls the gut-wrenching trauma of learning about her son Ben’s death as she waited with other Sandy Hook parents and children in a nearby firehouse as rabbi’s and priests started arriving. “When I saw all those clergy people I knew in my gut of guts and my heart of hearts that they were dead,” she recalls. “I knew there was absolutely no way they would dispatch this multi-denominational fan of clergy people

were it not the case that the news would be absolutely catastrophic.” Finally, an official announcement was made: 20 child fatalities. “That is when, for me, my whole world shifted on its axis. It was like you are sitting in a room, and everything, including you, is turned upside down and you are sitting on the ceiling instead of the floor. You have this surreal sense of void, like all the air has been sucked out of the room.” Other parents of Sandy Hook children: Ana MarquezGreene, Benjamin Wheeler, Daniel Barden, Dylan Hockley and Jesse Lewis have also talked openly about the tragedy remembering their lost loved ones and trying to help other parents come to terms with their grief.

Jimmy Greene has that it was an honor to have known his six year-old, Ana. Ben Wheeler’s mom, Francine, revealed that her other son, Nate, was hiding when he heard Ben and his classmates and educators get shot, said: “You can’t ever fill that hole in your heart. But what you can do is, you can cover your heart with all of this love to protect that sacred hole. You’ve got to make your heart bigger than the hole.”

Mark Barden said, of his late son, Daniel, “He was known as the kid that would talk to somebody sitting alone. He was genuinely an old soul.” Nicole Hockley said her son, Dylan, “Was always smiling, and always laughing. And he was very pure, possibly because of his age – he was six – and possibly because he was autistic.” Neil Heslin said his son, Jesse Lewis, “was my best friend and my buddy. He’d introduce himself as Jesse and daddy. He was my whole life.” If you are coping with the death of a loved one and need confidentialy, Samaritans in Spain have an English speaking helpline: +34 902 833 535

Party season is finally upon us. If you’re thinking of organising your own party this is your ‘How To’ guide with top tips on making it one that everyone will remember.

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME An ideal dinner party suits 8-12 people comfortably. Any more than 12 and you have seating dilemmas and people shouting over each other. Plus you’ll more than likely have to get in caterers. You can be more flexible with a cocktail party, as that can work well with anything from 20 to 80 people. This is probably the best and most plausible option as you can manage the planning, décor, canapés and music mostly on your own. Although below are some great tips and cheats for making it a party to be talked about. If you’re going with anything above 80 people: Hire in the big guns!! This could be too difficult to organise on your own and would be impossible without additional caterers, waiter staff and or bartenders. Marbella Rocks recommends Marbella Event Academy for bartenders and some fantastic party planners such as Fiesta Sol, Marbella Parties and EZ Entertainment on the Costa del Sol that can organise everything right through from deco, drinks, dinner and live entertainment. If you decide to throw a party without outside help, here’s how to do it from start to finish with ease.

DELECTABLE DÉCOR Simplicity is key to getting the décor right at a party. So try to stick to one colour theme and follow throughout. Try purple tree decorations, flowers, table runners and napkins blended with gold or silver, to make a tasteful yet Christmassy look. Simple Christmas bauble decorations hanging from the ceiling can give a great look with minimal effort.

FEATURES reused for a number of occasions. These can be found at any home depot store, such as Leroy Merlin. Clear, clear and clear again. Your house should look like your house but we all collect a lot of junk over the years, which you could do without showing off. Try hiding away any ornaments or possessions you normally have lying around, in the rooms you’re going to be entertaining in. Alternatively a Winter Wonderland theme of white is a great festive look – just be careful when serving red wine, as spills will certainly ruin your décor.

TOP TIPPLES Champagne is always a good option to serve as guests arrive to get people in the party spirit. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, one of the joys of living in Spain is the abundance of fantastic cavas, which taste delicious and can be spruced up with a raspberry garnish in each glass. Or for extra colour and a sweeter taste add a dash of Crème de Cassis to make a Kir Royale. Mulled wine is a great winter warmer to serve your guests as they come through the door. A delicious and easy recipe involves adding: 750ml red wine, 150g caster sugar, 1/2 cup orange juice, peel of one lemon, peel of one orange, 1 star anise,

Stick to one or two focal points in your house, such as the fireplace and Christmas tree. Then get soft lighting and uplighting on your focal points. Any more and you’ll look cluttered. Illuminate your front drive or pathway to your front door with garden torch candles. This is a simple yet classy touch that makes any home look inviting. Garden torch candles are also very inexpensive and can be

FEATURES 1 cinnamon stick, 5 cloves, 1 tsp fresh nutmeg and a pinch of ginger. Boil in a large saucepan and serve in glass cups. (Serves 10 so multiply accordingly.) Create your own party cocktail depending on your colour theme then decorate with something appropriate. For example if you love a Cosmopolitan, make that your main drink and add candy canes to the glasses. If you prefer Mojitos, add caster sugar that’s been dyed with red food colouring to the rim, then decorate with a sprig of faux holly leaves and berries. The joy of cocktails is that many of them can be made up before guests arrive and laid out on a drinks table, so you can enjoy the party without rushing around.

Another great Christmassy drink to serve is a light and refreshing Winter Sun Cocktail. It contains clementine, lemon, and vodka with a citrus sugar rim and the herbal piney scent of a rosemary garnish – as this looks perfectly like a sprig of pine from a Christmas tree! Most official party planners recommend allocating four glasses of wine or equivalent to the average guest drinking and then throw in a few extra bottles. Personally I would double that quantity, there’s nothing worse than running out of drinks at a party and maybe its just Marbella, but my guests would drink four glasses of wine in the first hour.

CATERING You don’t have to be Delia Smith to throw a few bits together at home to make delicious party finger food. Aim for variety (meat, vegetarian, hot, cold, spicy, and

sweet). Estimate six canapes per person, but remember that it’s better to have too much food than not enough. Opt for shortcuts such as ready-roll puff pastry topped with goat’s cheese, sundried tomato paste and basil, they will taste far better than any ready-made or frozen canapés available from the supermarket. Other great and easy options are smoked salmon bilinis made with cream cheese and garnished with a sprig of dill, pigs in blankets - it is Christmas – and they taste even better with a sweet chilli dip. Mini mince pies dusted with icing sugar are also a great and inexpensive option.

THE WORLD’S SMALLEST CHRISTMAS DINNER These simple yet delicious bite-sized Christmas dinners will hopefully wow your guests in a big way. Ingredients: (Makes 20 canapés) 500 grams of potatoes 1 packet of apple and chestnut stuffing 6/8 slices of roast turkey 20 small sage leaves 20 individual semi-dried cranberries 400g of mini brussel sprouts 1 pack of braised red cabbage 1 packet of cocktail sticks Method: 1.Thickly slice the potatoes and then cut with a rounded cutter. Fry the cut out potato shapes in a little oil until golden. 2. Use the smallest circular cutter available and fill with stuffing to form a small disc - then dry fry in a pan until golden and crisp on the outside. 3. Drop the sage leaves into some hot oil and fry for 3-5 seconds - then leave on some kitchen towel to drain. 4. Cook the sprouts and red cabbage. 5. To assemble the canapés, first place the potato disc on the base of a tray, then the stuffing, top with some hot red cabbage, a small slice of turkey and a sage leaf then place a brussel sprout and some cranberry on a cocktail stick and secure all ingredients in place.

FEATURES FEATURES Another main tip is to always keep the canapés small, if they are more than a mouthful then accidents will happen as guests attempt to juggle drinks and food. And keep plenty of napkins nearby for greasy fingers and spillages. Also make sure you pre-prepare the food and bring it outdoors as soon as possible so that hungry guests don’t hang around while you’re stuck in the kitchen.

HIRING CATERERS This can save you a significant amount of time and effort. It can be relatively inexpensive per head depending on the level of catering required. This may sound expensive, but if you consider how much you actually spend on food, including all the little extras, and how much time you spend preparing and cleaning up, then it can be a great alternative.

Marie Antoinette Ball? That’s one way of really making your event stand out. And as we’re in Marbella you can’t beat a classic black and gold, red or white themed party, famed by the likes of Nikki Beach and Ocean Club!

This also means you get time to enjoy the party rather than rushing around, making sure that everyone is happy and full. A popular choice of food for a party in the winter months is spit-roast cooked meat with salads.

THEME PARTY OR NOT?

MAKING THE RIGHT NOISES Theme parties could be borderline tacky… but, hey, they can also inject some much needed fun and spirit into an evening! And generally, when people are in a fancy garb or disguise, they tend to relax and let their hair down more! If you’re thinking of doing a themed event make it one that’s easily accessible to all. It would probably not be a great idea to hold a workout-themed party when you know your elderly in-laws will be there. One theme that’s easy for everyone is horrible Xmas Jumpers. A 60s or 80s theme always gets people making an effort and can be the greatest fun. If you want to go big and glam, how about opting for a Masquerade or

The entertainment on the night can be one of the most talked about aspects of the whole event and is something that can really bring people together. Depending on the size of your party it’s always good to hire a DJ for ease and to really get the party rocking. That way you can have the lighting, decks (if necessary) and great sound system all brought in for you. For smaller scale parties, how about making an iTunes playlist with your favourite songs? Intersperse with Christmas songs to lighten the mood if you prefer a more dance-led playlist. For larger events you may well want to hire a singer or band. There’s an abundance of choice here on the Costa del Sol. Here’s our pick of the best acts on the coast.

HOMETIME Most cocktail or larger parties usually have a finishing time on the invite. On average, cocktail parties are three or four hours long, so don’t be afraid to write a wrap-up time of midnight on your invites. Some people actually prefer you being specific so they can book taxis and babysitters. Music – to wind down a party just turn the volume down 20 minutes prior to the finishing time and switch off at finishing time. Alternatively, if you don’t want the party to end – ignore these party planning rules and carry on! It’s your event. Just remember if you are thinking of doing this then pre-warn your neighbours you are having a party. Or better still invite them so they can’t complain about noise levels!

SHANGHAI SURPRISE -BUBBA WATSON HOLES PHENOMENAL BUNKER SHOT TO TAKE TITLE

Bubba Watson scooped the HSBC Champions Shanghai title after holing an incredible 60-foot bunker shot on the 18th. The two-time Masters Champion looked on in disbelief as he eagled the hole and let out a cry and a shriek. Moments later he putted a 20-foot birdie on the 18th in a play-off to beat Tim Clark and take the title. The US golfer’s performance in Shanghai had been dwindling since hole 16 with a bogey after missing the green with a lob wedge and a double bogey on the 17th. So when he hit the bunker on the 18th (with a one-shot defecit behind 5 players) he admitted he thought it was all over. That’s when he turned to his Caddie and told him, “It’s been a miserable couple of holes here, but this will change everything if it goes in.” “You always joke about holing it and then it actually went in,” Watson continued. “I didn’t know how to react and so I just kind of screamed, and I lost my voice a little bit. It was one of those shots, a one-in-a-lifetime kind of shot. And so it was pretty neat.” The 10th HSBC Masters has been described by pundits at the most memorable to date. His obvious talent for illustration opened doors for him and he quickly landed an apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned couturier, Cristobal Balenciaga. There, he began working as an illustrator for the fashion house. In 1961 he settled in Paris and worked as the assistant to LanvinCastillo’s head designer, Antonio del Castillo, before moving to New York City in 1963 to design the couture and ready-to-wear collections for Elizabeth Arden. In 1965 he

established his own eponymous company in New York. One of Oscar de la Renta’s first dresses was commissioned in 1956 for Beatrice Lodge, the daughter of then U.S. ambassador to Spain, John Davis Lodge, to wear at her debutante ball in Madrid. This white, tulle, double-tiered gown made the front cover of LIFE magazine, resulting in a splashy debut for the young designer. De la Renta’s label quickly came to represent casual luxury to society women - many of them friends of his then-wife, Françoise de Langlade, editor of French Vogue - among whom he effortlessly circulated. He first gained attention for his gypsy- and Russian-inspired collections in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which suggested the cosmopolitan sophistication that would characterise his creative output over the following decades. These collections were always distinctly modern, yet they also possessed a romantic, feminine quality, reflecting his grounding in both American sportswear and European couture. Consistent elements of his vision include a vibrant colour palette, delicate silk prints, the use of ruffles and soft silhouettes. He is perhaps best known for his evening wear and suits for women, which over the years became wardrobe staples for his faithful clientele of socialites and for former First Ladies: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton.

His flattering and feminine pieces inspired women all around the world, and his attire was adored by several presidential first ladies.

I’ve recently received some Christmas party invites, with dress codes that state: “Dress to impress”, “Bling”, “Lounge-Suit” and “Silver Bells”. Decoding a dress code can be trickier than deciphering ‘The Da Vinci Code’. The first step is to assess the dress code and look at the venue of the event, to ensure you chose an appropriate outfit. These days there are so many dress codes: festive, smart casual, lounge suit, after five or cocktail. It can get pretty confusing, so here is a guide to help you decode the dress code this festive season.

BLACK TIE OR FORMAL Gown or no gown: Do I have an option? Apart from white-tie affairs which aren’t common - black tie is the most formal dress code you’ll probably face when to comes to weddings or galas. For women, it’s customary to wear floorlength gowns, but in this day and age, exceptions can be made. If you don’t own a gown and don’t particularly want to buy one for a one-off occasion, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a cocktail dress you already have. However, if you do go down this route, just make sure to keep the colours rich (black, jewel tones, chic metallics, brown) so as not to look too casual. Alternatively, women can wear a floor-length gown in a lighter shade, since the silhouette is inherently dressy. Another acceptable option for black-tie affairs: Chic separates, such as a silk blouse with a full satin skirt.

FASHION

If you receive an invite with the term “black tie optional” know that it mostly applies to men who may or may not own or want to wear a tuxedo. For women, it means you have the option of wearing a full-length gown or opting for a cocktail dress, so long as the hemline isn’t too short or the style isn’t too revealing. Essentially, ladies should choose a dress that’ll hold up alongside a room full of men in formal tuxedos, and women who potentially have chosen to wear gowns.

SMART CASUAL This is probably the most popular dress code for parties. Jeans are a safe option; they can be teamed up with a nice top or blouse. Skirts or pants teamed with a top or a little summer dress are also great options. If you feel a bit casual, then dress up your look with a statement jewellery piece such as a necklace or earrings. Always try to wear closed footwear, i.e no thongs or strappy sandals. The main reason being if the party is at a bar or club, they may not let you in and they often have policies about wearing closed footwear. If you’re usually in charge of dressing your partner, keep in mind many venues these days require that guys wear a collar.

LOUNGE SUIT Just a notch dressier than ‘Cocktail’, again ladies should opt for elegant dresses or maybe a tailored black two-piece suit with a dressy blouse. I’ve also seen ladies pull off elegant 1950’s inspired duster coats over a skirt or pants. Men should wear a suit, shirt and tie. Suits in lighter colours are acceptable and ties can be any colour. If in doubt get him to bring a jacket and tie, assess the situation when you get there as he can always dress down but you can’t dress up.

CHRISTMAS OR FESTIVE Themed dress codes such as “Festive,” “Christmas” or “Bling” – The trick is to wear something that has a hint of Christmas or feels festive. For example choose a metallic colour such as silver or gold which are really popular right now, or work with the Christmas colours such as red or green. Sequins and embellishments are great for Christmas, as they add a bit of festive bling. These days variety shops like Go-Lo and Hot Dollar have loads of affordable options to pick from. My top tip: When in doubt – wear a LDB (little black dress), a cute pair of heels and wear a little bit of gold or silver bling to go with the festive season.

FASHION

BLACK TIE The chance to truly dress up doesn’t come along too often - why not go all out? Treat yourself to a brilliantly hued gown that compliments you complexion and figure. If you prefer a shorter dress silhouette (or if the party is in the early evening) opt for a classic or jewel-tone dress with lustrous accents.

COCKTAIL Sometimes called semi-formal or black tie optional, cocktail attire is elegant but formal. Seek out shorter dresses in luxe fabrics, like charmeuse, chiffon and satin. If you favour separates, style a skirt with a silky blouse and some sexy pumps.

Winter Hair Colour “The key to transforming your colour is to do it in now in winter when darker hues of blonde, brown and red are in.”

Winter is officially here and if you are thinking of transforming your hair colour – now is the time to do it. Honey blonde, apricot, copper, auburn or fiery red– all of these colours are perfect for the colder winter weather as the harsh effects of the summer sun can fade these looks. So Marbella bottle blondes…. are you thinking of going for a change that will help get your hair back in tip-top condition? Or are you a brunette or redhead that needs a transformation? Now’s the time to take the plunge.

HONEY BLONDE

H

oney blonde is the perfect middle ground between blonde and brown and works well for winter if you want to tone down brassy, overly bleached blonde locks. From the lustrous hair of Giselle Bundchen to the iconic colour hues of Jennifer Aniston, this colour is staging a winter comeback.

armer hair colour trends are taking over in 2015. If the darker reds aren’t an option, why not opt for a full on copper colour. Rachel McAdams’ copper penny strands certainly grab attention and help bring added warmth to their cool pale skin tones.

ou’ll need to turn to the still popular ‘ombre’ or ‘balayage’ technique for this one. One of the most coveted hair trends for brunettes in 2015 is rich chocolate brown, paired with caramel or butterscotch highlights. The rich warm hues of chocolate brown paired with the creamy golden tones of caramel and butterscotch give this look dimension and shine.

he brownish red strands of the auburn family will be another 2015 hair trend to look out for. The key to creating a fully dimension red like this is having different slices and highlights throughout the hair.

his hair colour is characterised by its deep and dimensional red and violet tones. Think of it as pillar-box red and much less ginger than your standard red dyes. The secret to red hair color that doesn’t fade is hair health. Keeping the hair’s protein, moisture, and pH levels balanced is optimal for long lasting red hair color.

GET JENNIFER LAWRENCE’S LOOK

The young actress has quickly won her way into many a

fashionista’s heart. I’ve been obsessed with Jenn’s style and beauty ever since she hit the Hollywood scene, and always want to steal her look. I’ve rounded up a few tricks of mine on how to recreate one of her fab looks at home. Begin this look by using a product like Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Stay-Matte Hydrator to refine your pores and curb excess oil. It will keep your skin looking matte but not dry, and is oil-free. Keep the make-up pretty simple, but you want to have a place to look, a focal point; If you’re doing a dark, dramatic eye, you tend to not do such a bold lip. Ordinarily if you’re doing a bold lip you’re doing a natural eye and vice versa. In this case I’m focusing on a smouldering brown smoky eye. I sometimes work backwards when I’m doing smoky eyes. Start with the application of the eye make-up before the base. This prevents shadow “drop-down” that would have caused damage to your foundation base if you had done the other way around – base and then eyes. It saves you plenty of time. Smashbox Full Exposure Palette is a great eyeshadow palette that is the perfect solution to get eyes like Jennifers without having to buy multiple products. But first, create a base to make the eye make-up last by covering the lid with a layer of cream base, we like Too Faced Shadow Insurance, followed by a layer of the silvery shadow from the palette over the entire lid, in an almond shape but with soft blended edges. Sweep the shadow under the lower lash line as well, concentrating most of the colour in the outer corners.

ISSUE 03 | MARBELLAROCKS

HAIR & BEAUTY Use one of the matte dark brown shades to contour the eye crease, and press a bit of the burnished gold shimmers over the centre of the lid for extra glam. Mix a bunch of shadows from the same palette – grey, taupe, teal – and keep layering them until it looks the right colour and consistency. Then add a little iridescent cream on your lower lash line and in the middle of your upper lids. Use a black liner such as YSL Shocking False Last Effect Eyeliner to draw a heavy line as close to the base of the upper lash line as possible, and to draw a very thin line across the entire lower lash line. Using a small blending brush (I love MAC’s small shader brush #231), smudge the bottom liner into the lashes so it makes them pop at the base but is not harsh. Coat lashes with a healthy dose of Diorshow Mascara. Now to the base: We want to aim for the clean and glowy look of the skin she obtains. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream is perfect for a light beauty-clean coverage.

It gives the minimal make-up appearance and also creates a perfect dewiness. Jennifer has a really beautiful apple of her cheek and these killer cheekbones. So exaggerate the cheekbone by using M.A.C Sculpting Powder to accentuate and sculpt out those areas. Then soften that out. Then apply one of the Make Up For Ever Liquid Cheek Colours to the apples of the cheeks. Then put a soft peachy-pink blush like NAR’S Blush Orgasm, possibly like a frost on top – it gives such a nice glow to it and it really accentuates the cheekbones and makes them pop. Use your fingers to apply a cream product, it helps it warm up and sink in so it looks like the colour is coming from underneath the skin. Finish of the look with the lips. Use a gloss with a faint pink tint and shimmer to keep the lip low key but still feminine and alluring. M.A.C. Tinted Lipglass in C-Thru will do the trick. You’ll get a wash of colour that lasts.

Know Your

CARBS IN MARBS Peet Rothwell has lived on the coast for 7 years and is a professional singer by night. His passion is fitness and wellness and along with coaching and personal training, Peet is also training to compete in Men’s Physique Bodybuilding.

I spend a lot of time answering questions about nutrition, in fact, once you get me started I can talk about this all day! One common topic that’s been put to me lately in Marbs, deals with eating carbs. Most people I chat to about diets tell me that they are trying their best to cut out all carbohydrates from their diets. This carb-free idea is something that is largely promoted by recent fad diets, however, I believe it’s certainly not a good way to eat.

T

his month I’m going to try and explain a few things to help you understand how carbohydrates work, why they are essential to our daily functioning, which ones are best and when not to have them.

What is a Carb?

AS MARBELLA ROCKS NEW RESIDENT FITNESS EXPERT, EACH ISSUE WE WILL BE COVERING ALL WALKS OF FITNESS LIFE FROM SPORTS AND WELLNESS RIGHT THROUGH TO COMPETITION BODYBUILDING. PEET’S MONTHLY WEIGHT LOSS AND DIET TIPS COUPLED WITH REGULAR GYM AND HEALTHY FOOD SPOT REVIEWS SHOULD MAKE FOR AN EXCITING AND UP TO DATE READ FOR THE HEALTHY MINDED. 06 78 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Carbohydrates are organic compounds that contain sugar. When we consume carbs the digestive system breaks them down into glucose (blood sugar). Glucose is our energy and is used to fuel our muscles in order to perform typical tasks such as walking or lifting a coffee cup. The glucose produced by carbs can be used by the body immediately, or stored for later use in our muscles, or as fat.

Good vs Bad Carbs

So we’ve established that carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet and essential for giving us energy, but there’s much discussion about good and bad carbohydrates. How do you know which is which? The answer is both simple and complex. Put simply a bad carb (simple) digests too quickly for the body to deal with and our amazingly efficient digestion system won’t waste the excess energy, instead it wants to store it for later as fat. A good carb (complex) will typically digest very slowly, giving the body more time to process and use all of the energy on offer. This reduces the production of insulin (the hormone responsible for transporting blood sugar) and in turn reduces fat storage.

HEALTH & FITNESS Recent studies suggest that certain simple carbohydrates can cause such a quick rush of insulin that they actually increase appetite and the risk of excess fat storage. Complex carbohydrates break down slower and burn as energy longer. They are in general less fattening.

Peet’s Tip

Consuming and timing good carbohydrates in our diet helps to regulate our metabolism (the way in which we can digest carbs into energy). This is why we benefit from the ‘small but often’ technique. Eating small meals consisting of good (complex) carbs and proteins every three or four hours in conjuction with an active routine helps us keep fat stores low.

What and When?

Now that we understand a little more about how carbs work and how important they are, we can now decide what are our best sources and when is best to consume them. My favourite sources of complex carbs are: Oats/Muesli Sweet Potato Quinoa Brown Rice Wholewheat Bread Wholewheat Pasta

glucose energy in our muscles to perform with extra intensity and a high protein meal after training helps to fuel our recovery. Adding carbohydrates to our posttraining meal will help transport proteins and essential amino acids into our muscles for the recovery process and muscle stored carbs can give us a fuller muscle appearance. As a rule I try to stick to the above triple optimum approach and generally eat zero carbs after my posttraining meal. Sometimes my evening intake will consist of only vegetable carb sources and bananas. I also like to keep my carb intake as low as possible on non-training days or when I’m less active.

Peet’s Tip

Fibre, unlike simple and complex carbs, cannot be broken down and turned into energy. It is an ‘undigestable’ food, so basically just hangs around filling space. Consuming fibre will keep you full for longer, thus reducing the urge to snack between meals.

Bottom Line

In general, your body needs between 45-65% of your calories to come from carbohydrates. If you are trying to lose weight, you can use the lower amount (45%) and make sure to incorporate only complex carbohydrates in your diet. In addition, a diet high in complex carbs will keep you feeling fuller longer, helping you limit your portions, which may lead to weight loss. As always, moderation is the key to success. Incorporating a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fat and protein and routine physical activity will help you achieve your nutrition goals.

Recipe

Fuel up with this simple pre-workout smoothie.

Our metabolism is fastest in the morning and straight after training. These are two of the three optimum times to ingest our daily carbohydrates. The third is around 45 minutes before training or physical exercise. A good carb/protein rich meal pre-training will give us the extra

• 1 cup of almond milk or water • 3 ice cubes • 1 scoop whey protein isolate powder (25 grams for women, 35 grams for men) • ½-1 cup fruit (your choice – stick with dark berries for your pre-workout, any fruit post-workout.) • 1 tsp glutamine powder for women, 2 tsp for men • 1 tsp BCAA powder for women, 2 tsp for men • Blend together in a blender, or shake ingredients in a shaker cup and eat the fruit on the side.

Surviving Christmas… With the Right Exercise

The 12 Minutes for 12 Days Christmas By JoJo Ruby Challenge France

I

thought this month’s workout should be practical as well as festive, since we’re at the beginning of the merry season. Ironically, this is certainly one time of year when we all want to look great, yet it is also that time when we will over-indulge… making that special party outfit feel so much tighter. The latest information states the average person will gain 7lbs over the festive period, so doing something physical every day will help keep the extra weight in check. I’ve also spoken to registered Nutritionist Claudia Norris to get her advice on how to lessen the fat gain while still enjoying dining during the festive time. So are you up the ‘12 Minutes for 12 Days Christmas Challenge!’

THE CHALLENGE: Choose any exercise or combination thereof from the list below and perform them for 12 minutes over 12 days. Any form of exercise will be a welcome break from all that eating and drinking and it’ll be even better if it’s done outside in the crisp, fresh air. Why not involve your family or even your visitors? Aim to get everyone moving for a simple 12 minutes every day. Not that hard!

The Exercises: RUN AND WALK Walk fast for one minute, then run for one minute, alternating for a total of 12 minutes. To work yourself harder, make runs as fast as you can. If you are used to running then add in hill sprints every one minute. This can be a pretty tough challenge at whatever level of fitness you are at.

SKIPPING AND PRESS-UPS Skip any style for 30 seconds – remember that if you can do them, double-unders burn off far more fat and are much more challenging. Then do as many press-ups as you can in 30 seconds, repeat for a total of 12 minutes.

DANCING Pop on a new CD and dance like no one is watching, this is great fun and burns masses of calories. Have a dance-off with the kids? Make it silly and fun… the minutes will just race away!

STEP-UPS Find some stairs, make sure they are secure with no loose steps, then walk up and down them for 12 minutes. Ouch! This will burn. To make this harder you can run them. If you are feeling the need for open space, take the family to ‘The Med Steps’ in Gibraltar for an awesome challenge with amazing views at the top.

DODGE BALL This is certainly one for all the family. You will need some space and a soft ball. The game involves one

02 82 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 06

person being ‘on’ and the others running from them. The aim is for the person that’s ‘on’ to throw the ball at someone else and get them to be ‘on’ instead. Keep changing the ‘on’ person. It’s easy to spend 12 minutes running around, both kids and the grown-ups will love it.

BURPEES Do as many burpees as you can in 30 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds. Go again for a total of 12 minutes. This is my favourite exercise as it will burn off fat, make you sweat and challenge your cardiovascular system big time.

SQUATS The old favourite, excellent for all those leg muscles. For a harder, more intense option try jumping your squats. Repeat for 45 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds before starting the next set. At the end of each round of 4 exercises take a 1 min breather, and repeat for 12 minutes if you can.

LUNGES Remember to work both your legs! Continue for 45 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds before starting again. At the end of each round of 4 exercises take a 1 minute breather, and repeat for 12 minutes. Remember to warm up and stretch after each work out, consult with your GP before starting any new exercise programme. For more pictures and descriptions of the above exercises please go to the Jojo’s fitness page on Facebook.

Surviving Christmas… With the Right Nutrition

CLAUDIA NORRIS Here are some top nutritional tips to help you out when it comes to the festive season. 1. Top up before you go out Eat something light and healthy such as a poached egg on toast before you head out the door. Drinking on an empty stomach will make your hangover much worse. Snacking light beforehand will take also the edge off your hunger and may help stop you from overeating. Eggs are a good source of cysteine, an amino acid that breaks down alcohol toxins, while the bread lines your stomach.

so that you don’t resent the situation and you will be far more likely to last the distance and stay in control. For advice and consultations, contact Claudia Norris, Registered Practitioner with the Nutritional Therapy Council (UK) NTC on 00350 540 14115 or at claudia@nutritioninspain.com.

2. Beware of the alcohol factor! Remember, alcohol is second to fat for high calories. Most alcoholic drinks are very high in sugar too. Just think of alcohol as liquid fat and the message will stick. Alcohol stimulates your appetite and lowers your resolve. Try some strategies to slow down the rate you’re drinking. Good tricks include: alternating your alcoholic drinks with soft ones, drinking spritzers or starting off with a booze-free mocktail. 3. Hangover Blues… Hungover? Try sipping on a ‘morning after’ detox juice. Upping your fluid intake will help with the alcohol elimination process. For a detoxifying super juice try mixing apple, carrot and grated ginger; this will encourage your body to flush out toxins naturally.

4. Portion Control Enjoy your food but don’t overdo the serving sizes. Be aware of what you are eating and how much you are eating. Maintaining a level of awareness will help you keep your food intake in check. 5. Don’t deny yourself… Allow some indulgences, relax a little and have some treats. Factor them in

ver forty years ago, Marchese Piero Antinori decided it was time to throw the book at the DOC. His family had been

making wine for 800 years, but it wasn’t until 1900 that they bought the vineyards in the famous Chianti Classico region.

They now fetch prices far and above their competitors, and are a ‘must’ taste!

They set about a programme of modernisation and experimentation. They used Bordeaux grapes and scandalised the Chianti authorities! In 1971, they in-

There is a growing feeling among them that Tuscany has moved beyond the need for a generic vehicle like the Super Tuscan. Indeed, many of these icon wines have obtained such star power that they’ve effectively gone beyond super Tuscan status. Their identities are so strong that where they come from is no longer that important. Whether Italy has moved beyond super Tuscans, one thing remains clear: Of the many prizes these wines have awarded Tuscany, none is more powerful than the opportunity for a new beginning. Try something new – Salut!

On the palate, the wine shows firm tannins with much polish and finesse as well, along with a balancing, tonic acidity and savory mineral notes which add length and persistence to the finish and aftertaste.

Hidden Gems Villa Tiberio

I

When you walk into Villa Tiberio you are entering paradise. The restaurant is on the busy Golden Mile but you feel as though you are in a picturesque Italian villa in the Naples countryside with its stunning landscaping, beautiful scenery and bountiful statues in the garden. It can safely be said you won’t have a more unique and special dining experience than here. The restaurant’s owner is charismatic Sandro Morelli, a rare Marbella treasure. Morelli has come from the most humble beginnings, having been brought up during the war in Naples, Italy, he left school at the age if 11 to support his family. At 18 he left Italy to pursue a better life for himself and his family. In a pure rags to riches tale (Morelli once slept in cardboard boxes in a bridge in London) he started working as a waiter and worked his way up to manager before forming one of the most successful London nightspots of his time, ‘Barbarella’s’. He describes this time as “the most incredible experience of my life.” ‘Barbarella’s’ on the Fulham Road in Chelsea was the ultimate venue on the London social scene. As well as a famed restaurant, it was doubled as a nightclub and stayed open until 4am every night. It attracted top clientele including Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Princess Diana and Max Bygrave.

06 88 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

After successfully running ‘Barbarella’s’ for over 20 years, Morelli decided upon a change of scenery and one of the places he’d always loved was Marbella. So in 1989 he opened the now famous ‘Villa Tiberio’. The restaurant has been synonymous with elegance and class for the past 25 years. In addition, it’s always been known for its high standards and faultless service, where Morelli looks after clients as if they are guests in his own home. Notwithstanding the extensive menu, a note at the bottom asks clients to ask for their favourite dish. Sandro points out that you can never offer a typical menu for Marbella as it is so cosmopolitan. “What we are trying to do is offer the best that Spain produces, which our chefs incorporate into the Italian and international recipes,” he explains.

EAT, SLEEP & DRINK Some of the delights include ‘capesanti e gamberoni alla thermidor’ (scallops and jumbo prawns served in a cream and brandy sauce); ‘porchetta alla Villa Tiberio’ (crispy roast suckling pig); ‘anitra al’orange’ (duck baked with orange and curaçao liqueur) plus baby lamb braised in Barola wine. As you would expect from a restaurant of this calibre, all the food is fresh and the pasta is all homemade. Our reviewers went for the spinach and ricotta ravioli and pasta with lobster and fresh cherry tomato sauce. The dishes were amazing, served to perfection and packed with flavour. The white wine choice recommended by the attentive maitre d’ Claudio was the perfect meal accompaniment. ‘Villa Tiberio’’s wine list, comprising some 3,000 bottles of top quality Spanish, French and Italian wines, is as fascinating as the menu and lists a 1938 Chateau Margaux, Petrus, Romanée Villa Tiberio Restaurant - MarbellaConti Grand Cru 1973, Vega Sicilia, Sassicaia, Tignanello Antinori and an 1894 bottle of Chateau Haut Brion, which Morelli purchased at auction from Christie’s. “You would be crazy to open it,” he laughs. In another string to Morelli’s bow: ‘The Apprentice’ star Karren Brady, has said Villa Tiberio is her favourite restaurant abroad. Speaking to The Telegraph, The former Birmingham City managing director, said, “It is all outdoors; there is nothing worse than going somewhere sunny and having to sit inside. The gardens are spectacular, and if you like Italian food, it is the best you will ever have. Sandro Morelli, ‘Villa Tiberio’’s owner, is utterly charming, and although it’s glamorous, it’s not stuffy. You could go in shorts and T-shirt or a ball gown and feel fine, which is what I like – there are no rules.” ‘Villa Tiberio’ is open every night, apart from Sunday in Winter, from 7:30pm and is located on the Carretera N-340 km 178.5 (next to the Marbella Club) on the Golden Mile. AUTHOR: JO WARD

Marc Quinn Solo Exhibition Art lovers… don’t miss out on the opportunity to see an exhibition in Málaga by one of the leading contemporary artists of his generation

A

member of the loose group known as the Young British Artists, Marc Quinn came to prominence in 1991 with his sculpture ‘Self ’, a cast of his head made from his own frozen blood. Quinn’s public profile grew when his controversial statue of disabled artist entitled ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ was exhibited on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square followed in 2008 by ‘Siren’ a solid gold sculpture of Kate Moss displayed at The British Museum in London. The Málaga Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) is hosting the first solo exhibition by Marc Quinn in a Spanish museum. ‘Violence and Serenity’ includes a selection of new and recent works, some of them specially created for this unique event at CAC Málaga, continuing Quinn’s investigation into some of the key concerns of our age. This exhibition will centre around a new body of work entitled the ‘Toxic Sublime’, distorted landscapes that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. In the ‘Creation of History’ series, which comprises oil

paintings on canvas and jacquard tapestries, Quinn again returns to an ancient form of art, the history painting, but brings it right into the present day by focusing on how our subjective response to and collective memory of contemporary events can create our historical past. The exhibition is in collaboration with the British Council. Marc Quinn ‘Violence and Serenity’ 12 September 2014 – 30 November 2014 CAC Málaga, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo www.cacmalaga.eu

Artist Profile: Gitte Ladefoged

D

anish born Gitte Ladefoged is quickly making a name for herself as an artist along the Costa del Sol. Having lived here for the past ten and a half years, Gitte’s art is inspired by the people she meets and her surroundings, something that is particularly evident in her work that reflects the beautiful light and colour of Andalucía.

Gitte likes to think of herself as an expressionist, whose motivation behind her paintings is to tell a story and evoke emotion, taking the viewer on a journey into their imagination. Her paintings include bright abstractions and organic forms with a touch of realism. One of her most recent collections ‘Welcome to the Zoo’ features drawings of animals over an abstract background. Gitte works with acrylic paint, sometimes adding mediums such as paste or sand to create 3 dimensional texture or old papers to create collages. She outlines her figurative work with pen and ink and enjoys using her hands to move the paint around the canvas alongside the more conventional paintbrushes and spatulas. As well as an annual exhibition held in her local area of Sotogrande, Gitte’s work is displayed at various venues, in galleries, shops and businesses and can be found hanging in homes up and down the coast. www.gitteladefoged.com

CAREERS

The Path From PR Professional To

LEGAL EAGLE THE PARTICULARS: Tim Hampson started his career working in the PR Industry where he was successfully carving out a path for himself in this field. However something just wasn’t quite right and feeling unsettled in 2007 he made the decision to retrain as a Solicitor. He is now fully qualified and works for a Law Firm where he specialises in Consumer Law, Commercial Litigation and Professional Negligence.

THE SCOOP:

I wanted to interview Tim to find out what led him to make quite a substantial change in careers, how he decided to take that risk and how he did it! Plus what challenges he may have faced along the way and how he solved these. So let’s begin …

PERSONAL FRAMEWORK:

Q: What is your educational background? I did quite well at school and gained 9 GCSE’s, 4 A-Levels and then took a degree in Economics and Business Management at the University of

MARBELLAROCKS || ISSUE ISSUE02 06 104 MARBELLAROCKS

Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I graduated in 2000 with a 2:2. Q: Can you talk us through your early career path prior to retraining as a Solicitor? Throughout my degree I had come to realise that I didn’t want to work in a financial or business management role. After graduating I wanted to pursue a passion for writing and applied for numerous journalism roles. At the same time, in order to gain more experience of creative writing, I also applied for work experience at a London PR firm. I was invited to an interview and it wasn’t like any interview I had ever had before, one question that sticks in my mind is I was asked what I thought was cool! Not really knowing how to answer, I said something along the lines of “I saw Fight Club the other day and thought Brad Pitt was pretty cool in that” - it must have worked as I was offered the role the next week. Once I had my foot in the door it was easier to prove my worth and I found that I really enjoyed the work. I worked my way up from my work experience role to Account Director in a career that spanned around six and a half years. Working mainly for agencies I specialised in consumer PR. I found the work exciting

and fulfilling at first but reached a crossroads where (I felt) I had to commit to working in the industry for another 2-3 years to move to the next level. Q: Why did you decide to make the change from PR to Law? In the last two years of my time in PR I found myself making a number of vertical moves from agency to agency. I never really felt settled at any particular place and began to question why that was. I remember having an epiphany after returning home from a skiing holiday around February 2007. I had the usual post-holiday blues but there was something else nagging at me. Rather than simply not wanting to go back to work after a holiday, I became acutely aware of the fact that I didn’t want to go back to working in PR full stop. I had come into contact with legal departments when creating campaigns and I was impressed at the way the lawyers seemed to grasp the concepts and the issues quickly then deliver useful advice. I thought that I would like to challenge myself to work in a completely different field to that which I was used to.

CAREERS Q: What kind of retraining did you have to do and how easy/difficult was it? It was a bit of a shock to the system! I had to go back to studying and after working for nearly seven years in a very creative and eccentric industry - it was a wake up call to have to put the hours in again reading and learning a completely different subject. It helped that I had experience from the working world though as I found I was able to plan my time a lot better than when I was at university the first time around. I took a conversion course at the College of Law called the Graduate Diploma in Law. During the first term we had to decide whether to head down the barrister or solicitor route, despite originally thinking I would be more suited to the role of barrister, I decided to aim to qualify as a solicitor as I felt I had more transferrable skills to that area of the profession. I completed the Legal Practice Course and left the College in the summer of 2009. The next task was to find an elusive training contract. Again, I sent out numerous applications and eventually accepted a paralegal role at a firm that was local to me at the time. Once I was working there I progressed and was eventually offered a trainee solicitor role. I qualified and was admitted to the Roll of solicitors in December 2011. Q: Could you explain in a little more detail what your new role as a Solicitor entails? Put simply, I provide advice on the law and allow people to access their right to justice through the Courts. Day to day the job is extremely varied. I might be appearing in court as an advocate, drafting a pleading to enable a client to bring or defend a claim, or providing advice either in person or in writing. I enjoy the fact

that the law is constantly evolving and spend a lot of time keeping up with case law and changes in legislation. Q: Has it been worth the risk – has it been what you initially expected? Absolutely. I am now in a very privileged position as one of only approximately 130,000 practising solicitors in England and Wales and although the profession faces challenges in the coming years I believe that I will have a career working in the law for the next 25-30 years.

SCALING THE PEAKS:

Q: What have been your personal professional highlights? • Qualifying and seeing my name on my first practising certificate • Negotiating a settlement for an elderly couple who had lost the bulk of their life savings as a result of poor financial advice, they were compensated and could therefore afford to enjoy their retirement • Winning my first trial and hearing the Judge give judgment in favour of my client Q: What is it that you love about what you do? The work is challenging and requires independent thought and an understanding of complicated concepts. I enjoy being able to interpret the subject matter in order to help people understand and enforce their rights.

HITTING THE ROCKS:

Q: Retraining and making such a big change must have had its challenges?

Can you talk us through any of these and how you handled them? The biggest challenge was overcoming personal doubts that all the retraining and hard work might not actually lead to anything substantial. The law is a very competitive area and the competition for training contracts especially is extremely fierce. I was concerned that I was spending a lot of time (and money) and may not have a job at the end of it. In order to overcome these doubts I invested a lot of time in researching the other options available to me if I didn’t manage to find a training contract, such as qualifying whilst working in the legal field. Knowing that I had a plan B and even plan C was comforting but I always knew I wanted to aim for qualification. Q: What have the challenges and harder times taught you for the future? Not to give up and to know that if you are dedicated and professional you will get there in the end.

REVELATIONS:

Q: Do you have any tips, secrets or anecdotes you are happy to share with us relating to your chosen career? • Gain as much experience in the legal market as you can, it all looks good on your CV when you are applying for roles • Think about how your skills from previous roles could transfer, for example, I used my previous experience of writing press releases as an example of putting across a complicated message in a succinct and easily understandable format • Remember that lawyers must have people skills too! It is important to know and understand the law but you also have to be able to relate to a vast variety of clients who

ISSUE 02 06 || MARBELLAROCKS MARBELLAROCKS 105 ISSUE 105

all have concerns which are very important them. You have to be able to emphasise with people whilst remaining professional

Q: What are your tips for staying motivated especially when deciding to take a risk and make a big career change?

Q: I imagine the work you do can be quite stressful - how do you deal with stress and stay on top of your game? On the flipside what are the benefits and what do you enjoy most?

Never forget why you are making the change and what your end goal is, bear in mind that you are making that change for a reason.

My work can be quite stressful although the particularly busy times tend to come in peaks and troughs. I can be extremely busy with several court deadlines to meet whilst having to deal with an urgent matter one week and then have a relatively quieter week the next. I find that trying to compartmentalise larger tasks into easily achievable smaller ones helps as I feel that I am constantly making progress and not stalling. I’m getting better at starting the larger tasks I know I have to do in my less busy times in order to avoid work getting too much, that has really helped as I used to be a great procrastinator. I’m also very lucky in that I have always been able to switch off and not think too much about work once I leave the office for the day. Having a busy life outside of work helps and my two young children don’t allow me too much time to dwell on office problems when I’m not there.

06 106 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

DIRECTION AND ADVICE:

Q: What has been the most important thing you have learned in your career to date? To keep questioning my understanding, in order to continue to learn and to share problems and to seek advice from senior colleagues - a problem shared is 10 times easier to solve than a problem you try to deal with on your own. Q: What have been the biggest surprises? That opponents on the other side have not always been ruthless and completely out to get you, it is quite common in litigation to act for clients against the same firms and individuals on a number of cases so you actually develop quite cordial relationships with solicitors from rival firms.

Q: If you could talk to yourself back when you were taking those first initial steps toward a new career what advice would you offer – would you encourage others to do the same? I have been relatively lucky as my plans have mostly come to fruition but I would reiterate my advice from before, always remember why you are making the change if you are ever feeling demotivated. I would always encourage others to do the same if they are committed to making that change. Q: Are there any particularly useful resources out there for those interested in doing what you have done? The Law Society provide useful help and guidance on becoming a solicitor and there is a section on their website that I would urge anyone who is interested in retraining to read, it includes advice specifically for career-changers and highlights the benefits of coming to the law after a career in a different field. otting Hill is one of London’s most favoured districts, inundated with beautiful restaurants, attractive terraces, high end shopping and quirky events. Hidden away in a secret location in Notting Hill is a London Supperclub, a trendy and alternative way to eat out, dishing up delicious food. This Supperclub is known for the Secret Sunday Lunch club, with their signature dish being a traditional oldfashioned Sunday roast. From tender succulent meats to crispy potatoes, crackling, sweet vegetables, scrumptious Yorkshire puddings, fruit crumble and an indulgent cheese board, it is quickly becoming one of Notting Hills favourite places. It is perfect in the summer months as it overlooks the beautiful Portobello, and is equally ideal in winter when relaxing by the cosy fire, one of London’s true special treasures.

What´s TRENDING When one of Hollywood’s hottest properties arrived at Leicester Square for the premiere of his new film, I knew it had to be a good one. Legendary actor Brad Pitt arrived on the red carpet in London, looking dapper as ever, to promote his new action war movie, ‘Fury’. Set in WWII Brad’s character, Wardaddy, embarks on a deadly mission with a Sherman tank

Eddie Redmayne first appeared on our screens as swooning lovestruck Marius in ‘Les Misérables’ in 2012, so it is no wonder if you don’t recognise him in his latest role. British actor Redmayne plays the well-known scientist Stephen Hawking in the hotly anticipated film, ‘The Theory of Everything’, due to be released in cinemas on 1st January 2015. It reflects on Hawking’s awe-inspiring life journey. Redmayne is strongly tipped as one of the leading contenders to receive an Oscar in 2015. His acclaimed performance is sure to capture the hearts of Oscar voters with his loveable British charm.

Brad Pitt wasn’t the only legend gracing the red carpet this season. Talented actor and future Batman star, Ben Affleck, was seen promoting his new film ‘Gone Girl’ with Rosamund Pike. The film, based on the novel by Gillian Flynn revolves around Affleck’s character Nick Dunne and the mysterious disappearance of his wife Amy. I won’t give away any spoilers, but judging from the book we are in for an epic story with some chilling scenes – a traditional nail-biter with complex relationship issues in the mix.

whilst handsome young men are seen carrying trays of mouth-watering drinks. From an archetypal WAG to a high-end fashion designer - Victoria Beckham really has altered the nations opinion! She has come a long way since her announcement to design a dress collection in 2008, so we can’t wait to see what showbiz royalty will be spotted in this new fashion hub.

veryone has been anticipating the launch of Victoria Beckham’s first ever boutique and it seems her fashion dream is finally becoming a reality. Her store stands between Jimmy Choo and a high-class art gallery, it is opposite the popular Dover Street Market and is just a few doors down from the Ritz and Christian Louboutin, so Victoria Beckham really couldn’t have chosen a more suitable sartorial street to launch her VVB collection. Her boutique is more akin to a luxurious cocktail bar as opposed to a conventional fashion store. Trendy shop assistants flawlessly walk around using iPads (tills were certainly not on her fashion credentials list),

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

Aries

Gemini

Leo

Changes that occur in November are designed to clear the way for a cycle of fabulous new opportunities. You could be thinking big now - big goals, big dreams - and that big love is likely to appear but don’t be surprised if it does that it’s in the form of someone who comes across as a little larger than life or even from far away. You could be about to commit to something - a course of study, a journey or opportunity that opens up new perspectives for you. Others could be the recipients of what some people may see as a stroke of pure luck but which you know you’ve worked long and hard to achieve. Expect doors to open as the universe grants you an ‘Access all Areas’ pass to romance, fun and pleasure this holiday season.

Single? Searching? November offers one of the best periods of the year for finding that special someone. If you’re coupled up then expect to reclaim that heady, falling-in-love feeling that you experienced when you first met. Lucky you. December continues the togetherness theme and it’s time to get serious about either someone or what it is you actually want. If you’re not getting it from your current squeeze ask for it - and if it’s still not forthcoming, move on. Don’t be afraid to initiate changes as the year draws to a close, as you are not only in a position of personal power but radiating such magnetism you’ll soon have someone under your spell. It’s a funny thing about people who ask for what they want - they almost always end up with it - or else something better. When you take yourself and your needs seriously, others will too.

Keep a firm grip on reality now and don’t allow others to convince you that what you instinctively know is the truth, is otherwise especially when it comes to your career. There’s a golden Leo glow around you now and no matter whether you’re set to make an impression on a personal or professional level you’ll make the right one. Business and creative ventures get a green light and all that light you’re radiating could attract more than one admirer if romance is your goal. December may see things suddenly slow down but this is in order for you to build on all the progress you’ve made so far this year. You’ll be gearing up again for another trip down the fast lane once 2015 kicks off but for now, take your time, review your achievements and just freewheel and enjoy the holiday season.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

Your personal mojo is going to be set to irresistible as we head on into December. Now, I’m not saying that everyone (or everything) you attract is actually what you want, or even welcome, but take whatever comes as a testimony to your own brand of personal magnetism and allure. Romance could be set to sizzle and when it comes to business, your creativity is at a high and people would be advised not to underestimate you. If you’ve been telling yourself you can’t have or do something recently perhaps now is the time to examine why as events indicate you have the power to attract whatever it is you want. Step into those power Jimmy Choos now and claim what’s rightfully yours.

A decision about a romance, friend or other connection in November clears the way for either a new understanding or else something better, Cancer. By the time we head into December relationships just seem to have that added festive sparkle and magic to them. When it comes to celebrating however, your body is more sensitive than usual so if you over-indulge you may suffer more than one kind of hangover. A big shift in a love affair, marriage or your own romantic status could be what Santa has in store for you - and it won’t matter whether you’ve been naughty or nice (or both!). Chances are that you’ve encountered that new love before - or you’ll meet them somewhere you’ve frequented in the past but now the cosmic timing just happens to be right. If you’re standing under the mistletoe hoping to get lucky, you won’t be alone for very long.

It’s all about the love as we head towards Christmas, Virgo - especially what’s been revealed around love or partnership matters these past few months. You could just hear something that backs up your gut feelings about a relationship and if so, don’t let the other party convince you otherwise. Stay connected to your truth. December sees the focus shifts towards home and family matters and to what makes you feel secure - both emotionally and financially. If contemplating a move - now is the time to set the wheels in motion. Good news around romance or business could put a song in your heart but ensure you are thinking in the long term, which is what the year’s end is all about for you. You’ll have to live with your decisions for a very long time now - so take your time when making them.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Messages of love, success, luck and travel opportunities could provide highlights for you in November. Expect that lucky break or just a stroke of good fortune to find you - whether you are travelling or just hanging around your neighbourhood. If you are searching for romance then you may not have to look much further than your own community - or your commute for that matter. Your ideal match could be sitting next to you or standing behind you in the coffee shop. Synchronicity takes you into December and has you in exactly the right place at the right time to take advantage of fortuitous party connections. Let others know what it is you are trying to achieve as goals are highlighted and above all, if someone starts talking to you - respond in kind. You never know where that connection could take you. All the way to the stars.

After a month ruminating on the deeper meaning of life, your birthday season arrives on November 22nd and the party begins! Out with the old and on with the new you as what occurs this month sets the tone for the next 12. The middle of the month is especially magical for romance and if you meet someone new there’s an intense feeling of déjà vu around the connection. Could it be a magical past life connection? Most probably. Above all, demand more recognition, more adventure, more love and just a bigger slice of life all round for the next year. A new cycle of opportunity begins now and asks you to get serious about success and going after whatever it is that you want. If you’ve felt you’ve been lurking behind the scenes of late, then now is the time to stage your comeback and reclaim the spotlight.

You’re looking closely at partnerships and close connections now and determining if they provide you with the emotional support you need. Whatever comes up short in your life - you won’t wait around for it to come to you or Santa to deliver it. You’ll be out looking for it and if it’s love you seek to explore - every possible avenue can connect to it now. At the very least all of you should be on the receiving end of a few invitations. It’s time to showcase your talents and embrace innovation in all areas of your life - especially at work. Any lingering problems require a different approach to what you’ve taken in the past. Love or a significant new friendship could begin at an unusual venue or event or with someone very different who crosses your path. Embrace the new - literally and figuratively now.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

If you feel you’ve been on a roll this birthday season then just because the Sun leaves your sign on the 22nd doesn’t mean the party is over. On the contrary, fabulous opportunities could continue to present themselves especially when it comes to money and romance. Many of you could find yourselves attending prestigious or even red carpet events or just enjoying the finer things of life. Your earning ability is in focus and if you are not being rewarded in line with your skill set it is now time to either confidently renegotiate or look for something better. Ask yourself what you are really worth and how you deserve to be treated now. This doesn’t just apply to your job but across all your relationships. If you value yourself, the world values you in return. Self-worth is the key to getting what you want now.

Friendships and connections both personal and professional, your social life and your goals are what fuel the first weeks of November, Capricorn. However, don’t be surprised if there are shifts in your social circle as a result. New friends and even professional contacts can be made now but also you may discover that there are certain individuals or even a group you no longer share a resonance with and you may decide to sever the connection as a result. As we head into December and the year’s end you may surprise others but most importantly yourself with your eagerness to usher out the old and get on with the new. The run up to your birthday should see you in rare social butterfly form and not just the centre of attention but attraction as others flock to you like moths to a flame making this a potentially sparkling Christmas for romance.

What have you always wanted to experience, Pisces? And what stands in your way of you having it? November asks you to look at where you may be holding yourself back. Don’t fall into the trap of blaming others - change begins within and any shift you make in your thinking will be reflected in the outer world - and possibly faster than you ever believed possible. December sees your social life soar and also the possibility of one particular item off your wishlist getting crossed off. If it’s love then there’s a distinct possibility that you’ll be cuddled up with someone special this holiday season while others could see a long term professional goal come to fruition that could not only send them careering headlong towards more success in 2015 but boost their bank account at exactly the right time. You’ve more than one reason for this to be a happy holiday season now.

Franco and Rogen are infamous when it comes to internet pranks. Last year, they spoofed Kanye West’s ‘Bound 2’ music video starring a topless Kim Kardashian, played by Rogen. The duo called their version ‘Bound 3.’ Rogen wrote to West and his lady saying, “Hey @ KimKardashian & @kanyewest check out what me and @ JamesFrancoTV did on the set of @ TheInterview.”

J

ames Franco has recently posted a photo of himself on Instagram, posing naked with fellow comedian Seth Rogen.

The actor shared a pic of them standing side by side with not one item of clothing on their erm…. substantial bodies. In the (luckily) censored photo, ‘The Interview’ co-stars can be seen covered by dirt in the jungle. “Boom boom, NAKED and afraid. Me and Seth, in the bush, naked, together. For reals,” he captioned it. In another post he shared that day, Franco wrote, “See if me and Seth can make it, NAKED and AFRAID!!!! Wtf?! You’ll see.......” It is still unclear whether the photo is related to Discovery show ‘Naked and Afraid’, which sees naked contestants trying to survive in the wild for 21 days or if it’s just a prank.

06 116 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Kim later said that she and her husband loved their video. “You nailed it!!! Sooo funny,” she tweeted. Rogen and Franco also took time out to parody Kim & Kanye on the front cover of Vogue after their wedding in June this year. Rogen is also planning a Bound 4 video with his ‘Bad Neighbours’ co-star Zac Effron, having posted this image on his Twitter account. Watch this space.

Each month Marbella Rocks Magazine will be quick firing questions at unsuspecting, famous Marbella faces. This month, we’ve sprung it on children’s author Anita Pouroulis, who lives in Sotogrande.

Nickname: Nits What’s your inspiration for your books: This crazy imagination of mine! What’s your favourite book and why: As a child, anything by Enid Blyton. She was wildly creative, yet wrote in a way that was comforting and familiar. Nowadays, I’m quite an eclectic reader. At the moment I’m reading ‘The Seamstress’ by Maria Dueñas and ‘A Short History of Almost Everything’ by Bill Bryson. Best thing about being an author: Being able to give life to my vivid imagination. Worst thing: Waiting to find out what the critics have to say about your newest book… If you weren’t an author you’d be: A doctor. Greatest achievement: My daughter. Best advice ever given: ‘Feel the fear and then do it anyway’. What are you listening to: Right at this moment, it’s Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’. If you were an animal what would you be: Definitely a bird. I’ve always wanted to fly. Ideal dinner party guest: Richard Quest from CNN: He’s insightful and I love his dry sense of humour. 06 118 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Funniest pick up line used on you: A guy in a nightclub offering me M&M’s from a bag in his jacket pocket. (He’s my husband now!) Best pick up line you’ve used: “Yes, please.” (To the M&M’s). What did you want to be growing up: Famous Best character trait: Creativity Worst habit: Never knowing when to sit down and relax. I can go on and on and on…. until I’m exhausted. What do you do to relax: I paint. Friday night out or Sunday day in: Sunday day in - popcorn and a good movie in the dark. Best thing about Marbella: I love cycling along the ‘paseo de la playa’, with the sunshine on my back. Plans for the future: I really want to write a notable novel for teenagers, that endures through the years, like Judy Blume’s books do. Check out Anita’s website at www.anitapouroulis.com. Her books are available in English and Spanish at www.amazon.co.uk, www.amazon.es, www.bookdepository.com, and at Bookworld España in Puerto Banus.
