everyone’s talking about... IT’S A GIRL

It’s the birth that the whole world has been talking about for the past nine months and finally on the 2nd of May 2015 at 8:34am the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a beautiful little Princess weighing 8lb 30z. The Princess, who was born in the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, was, with the Queens approval, named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, paying respect to Willam’s late mother, who was killed in a car crash in 1997. Prince Charles has said his granddaughter is “beautiful” and admitted he was really hoping for a girl. Charles, 66, told well-wishers, “I am thrilled. I was hoping for a granddaughter – someone to look after me when I am very old.” Princess Charlotte spent her opening days at Kensington palace with her family before William and Kate took her and elder brother Prince George to their county home, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

SATC 3 IS ON ITS WAY

IGGY’S JAW DROPPING SURGERY

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea turned heads at the recent Billboard Awards with a noticeably different appearance, sparking rumours she has gone under the knife again. Paparrazi pictures of the Fancy singer showed a much more defined, elongated jaw and without a doubt a more shaved, narrower nose with noticeable work done to the tip of her nose. The starlet admitted to undergoing breast augmentation last year, so surgery obviously doesn’t faze the modelturned-singer. A source close to the star confirmed to US Weekly that Iggy had gone down the surgery route again: “She loves the results. She wasn’t happy with her nose for a long time, so after the boobs she wanted to get that taken care of and then got the chin done at the same time.”

Sarah Jessica Parker has let the proverbial cat out of the bag (a medium-sized Bloomingdale´s one) by posting a pic of herself leaving the infamous US store with the caption “hello lovers!” In case you´re not a fan of the multi-million dollar franchise, Sex and the City, SJP´s character, Carrie is a major fan of the New York department store and regularly coins the “lovers” phrase. Underneath her post she wrote “I´m under strict gag order until then. Xx” Fellow co-star Kristen Davis had also previously hinted SITC 3 is well on its way telling reporters she would love to do it again.

RIO FERDINAND LOSES WIFE

In a heartbreaking statement, England defender Rio Ferdinand announced the death of his longterm wife Rebecca Ellison last month. He commented, “My soul mate slipped away last night. Rebecca, my wonderful wife, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. She was a fantastic, loving mother to our three beautiful children. She will be missed as a wife, sister, aunt, daughter and granddaughter. She will live on in our memory, as a guide and inspiration.” Ellison, mother of three children, Lorenzo (nine), Tate (six), and four-year-old Tia, was suffering with breast cancer. Ferdinand thanked his present and past club colleagues, as well as family, and doctors at the Royal Marsden Hospital for their support.

TECH & GADGETS 9D TV - COMING TO A SCREEN NEAR YOU If you’re not into staying in watching TV all the time, there is a new phenomenon that might change your mind. The University Of Sussex in the UK has recently been awarded £1 million in order to research and create a television which uses 9D… yes you heard it right, 9D! If you thought that technology had made it when they created 3D TVs, you were wrong. Scientists have created an Ultrahaptics box that works alongside a normal TV, which blasts air onto your hands in order to generate emotion. The box will send short, sharp bursts to your thumb, index and the middle of your palm to generate excitement and slow, moderate blasts to the outer palm and little finger. And now the team are working on technology which will emit smells and work on your sense of touch, the result will be a 9D TV that combines vision, sound, touch, smell and the five tastes - sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami. Dr Marianna Obrist, who led the work at the department of informatics at the University of Sussex in Brighton, Essex, said combined together they could bring all of our senses into the experience of watching television. The aim of this technology is to make TV more immersive… shows like Antiques Roadshow might even become exciting. And that’s not it… scientists at the university believe that similar technology can also be used to better communication between parent and baby or long-distance relationships. What better way to connect with a loved one than to feel like they’re actually in the room with you! If all goes to plan then the TV and technology should be available in just five years.

RECIPE

If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

HALLOUMI, MANGO & GREEN BEAN SALAD This is one of the most tasty little bites sourced from Ferne Mcann’s fashion and food blog. It’s super quick and easy to make, light and full of flavour. A fantastic meal for those who are looking to get summer-body ready.

INGREDIENTS ● ¼ rocket ● 10 cherry tomatoes (halved) ●1 packet of green beans (steamed)

● handful of pinenuts ● 5 slices of halloumi ● 1 mango ●1 tin of green lentils (drained and washed)

For the dressing ● 1 lemon (juiced) ● 6 spring onions ● ¼ fresh mint (chopped) ● salt & pepper ● olive oil DIRECTIONS

1. Firstly make the dressing by mixing together the juice from a lemon, 6 spring onions, salt & pepper and the chopped mint. Give it a good mix-up, and then set aside. 2. Steam the green beans – if you like a bit of bite, steam for about three minutes. 3. In a ribbed pan, griddle off the slices of halloumi. They should only be turned once so make sure the pan is hot. Dry-fry the pieces for a few minutes until they become golden then leave them to one side off the heat. 4. Using a sharp knife, cut the mango into cubed pieces. 5. Plate up the rocket, green beans, cherry tomatoes, mango pieces, green lentils and pine nuts onto a plate. Pour over the dressing and toss well. 6. Finally pop the warm halloumi slices on top of the salad and serve.

WINE MATCH You could go several ways with this. Red-wise, that could be a Saumur Champigny or another Loire Cabernet Franc, a pinot noir or a juicy red like Mencia from the Bierzo region of northern Spain. Because of lemon dressing and spring vegetables, a crisp white such as Sauvignon Blanc would work for those who prefer a white. Even take it one step further with a Vinho Verde from Portugal. Or a crisp dry rosé like Bandol from the South of France would also be delicious. Perfect for those summer evenings. But if you were feeling really adventurous, try a dry Amontillado Sherry. A touch of sweetness and nuttiness will complement the halloumi and scattered pine nuts very well indeed. Try something new today. Salut!

AMERICAN SNIPER

HOW BIG, HOW BLUE, HOW BEAUTIFUL!

LIARS INC.

When Texas cowboy Chris Kyle, decides to become a navy seal, a legend is born. This jaw-dropping tale, directed by Clint Eastwood, shows the life of one of America’s deadliest snipers in all of their history; with 160 confirmed killings, which in reality could have been over 250, he proved so deadly that the Iraqis put a 6-figure bounty on his head. Bradley Cooper produced and played the role of Chris unbelievably well, his show stopping performance portrays how the ongoing tours of Iraq affected Kyle’s daily and family life. The film really hits home on numerous occasions throughout. The raw and gripping performances from the A-list cast, which includes BAFTA nominee, Sienna Miller, along with the truly inspirational storyline makes tears stream down your face with both happiness and sadness throughout the entire film! Without giving away too much about this overwhelmingly moving action biography, you must know that this is definitely one to watch, with Coopers performance bagging him both an MTV and Critics Choice award, and the film making $347.8 Million in box office, you’ll be seriously missing out if you don’t. ROCKS RATING:

After not hearing from Florence Welch for four years, she is bringing back Florence and the Machine with her new album; How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, released on June 1st. There are 11 tracks on the album, which were written and recorded last year with producer Markus Dravs. “He’s good with big sounds, and I like big sounds”, Welch said about Dravs in a statement. She also explained that she chose him to produce because she loved how Dravs produced Björk’s Homogenic. The group has now released the album’s first single What Kind of Man. It is about an emotionally damaging relationship, where Florence explores the idea of drinking to numb the pain. The single was premiered on BBC Radio 1 this February, and only hours later the music video was also released. The horn arrangement on the first song is a very prominent aspect of the album. “The trumpets at the end of that song - that’s what love feels like to me: an endless brass section that goes off into space,” Welch said. “And it takes you with it. You’re so up there. And that’s what music feels like to me. You want it just to pour out endlessly, and it’s the most amazing feeling.” Sure to be a hit. Florence & The Machine fans are already going wild over this album. ROCKS RATING:

“Whoever knew lying could be so lucrative?” is the catchy strapline for this excellent novel by acclaimed author Paula Stokes. The story begins with lead character, Max Cantrell, forging permission slips and cover notes for friends in his senior year at school. Max, never a fan of the truth, decides lying can bring in serious money so he sets up Liars Inc. with his friends Preston and Parvati and the cash keeps rolling in. When Preston invents his own cover story to go and visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. That is until Preston never comes back and a series of terrifying clues lead the police to Preston’s body. To make matters worse, all the evidence points to Max as the murderer. Max is now faced with a race against time to find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. In a story that reviewers have called “captivating to the very end,” Paula Stokes starts with a single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the final chapters. Critics have described Liars Inc: “There is non-stop action in this dark, psychological thriller. Readers will definitely be on edge until the satisfying conclusion.” and “It packs an emotional and a physical punch. Captivating to the very end.” ROCKS RATING:

DJ TANGO

M

arbella Rocks talks exclusively to DJ Tango Williams, resident DJ at Tibu, on why he’s coming back to Marbella this year to do his first ever full season.

What made you want to get into DJ’ing?

I got my first pair of decks when I was 14; I was just really into music and loved garage. I was an MC when I was younger (I wasn’t very good….definitely not!), but the next step was definitely to get on the decks.

What did you love about garage?

It’s just what I loved at the moment, I’m originally from Clapham in South London, and it was just massive there!

26 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

When did you play your first ever major gig?

The Ministry of Sound when I was 17 - I was underage so I couldn’t drink or tell anybody I was there. A friend of mine started promoting club nights there called Smoov, and he asked me if I wanted to do a warm-up set. I did it, but had to leave straight away because they were worrying about getting in trouble.

What was your most impressive or biggest gig to date?

I’ve warmed up for people at Manchester Arena, like Snoop Dog, and I used to be warm-up DJ for Tim Westwood. I’ve been all over the world really.

That’s pretty big! Where would

NEWS

you say your favourite place to DJ has been? To be fair I loved Ibiza. I warmed up for Tim during the Radio One weekend and at the time I only really played R&B which isn’t big out there, but it’s so musically led that place, everyone is there for music and I like that.

You’re a DJ for CandyPants… What is your favourite thing about this brand?

Yeah, I’m a resident DJ for CandyPants. They have gigs all over the world —Dubai, UK and obviously here in Marbella.

How long have you been resident DJ for Tibu?

This is my first year at Tibu but I have been resident DJ for CandyPants for about five years.

What dates are you playing at Tibu? All summer!

Any other plans whilst you’re here in Marbella?

Yeah definitely! I think working every night is quite time consuming so I will have a little sleep! And I’ve never done a full season anywhere, I’ve always been jumping from island to island so I want to experience what its like to do a full season. It’s not a holiday anymore; I want to make Marbella my home for the summer.

Why is CandyPants the party to go to this season? I love CandyPants because it’s a fun, quirky brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I think sometimes at clubs people can be worried about looking too cool but CandyPants isn’t about that, just go there have a laugh and have fun.

What´s everyone wearing?

Well the funny thing about CandyPants is that at the peak times during the night they bring out fancy dress! At about 4am everyone has got these massive glasses and wigs on! I look down

at one song and everybody is normal and I look up next song and I’m thinking when did that happen?

What´s everyone drinking?

Vodka. There’s a lot of vodka! At Tibu it’s all about Belvedere.

How do you get tickets?

The PRs are everywhere so speak to them or you can buy them at the door.

What´s your favourite thing about Marbella?

I’d like to say the sun, but I burn really easily so I have to be a bit careful with that! I’d say, and it sounds really soppy, but I think it’s the staff. They’re all so nice. If you haven’t met them before, they could be your best friends in hours.

How does Marbella compare to Dubai or Leeds where you also run CandyPants nights? It’s funny because even though they’re miles apart, they’re really similar. There are a lot of the same people and I think with CandyPants, wherever they are they try and get a good vibe!

Any big surprises this summer? Yeah, there will definitely be things happening over the summer, but I can’t tell you, so keep checking out the social media!

Favourite tune this summer?

Well everybody at the minute loves Cheerleader, but my favourite tune is Liquid Spirit, The Claptone Remix by Greggory Porter.

Favourite track of all time?

That’s so difficult! I really like (this is a bit leftfield by the way!) but September by Earth, Wind and Fire. It’s a classic!

Who has been your biggest influence?

I would definitely say Tim Westwood. I worked with him

for so long at a time when I didn’t know very much and then afterwards, I thought I knew a lot. I have so much more experience now.

What’s your favourite thing about being a DJ?

I would definitely say the travelling is fun, but ultimately it’s getting to play to a room full of people and entertaining them. I love walking out of a club and people not knowing you’ve been DJ’ing and hearing them say, it’s been such a ‘sick’ night.

Least favourite thing?

The lack of sleep definitely!

Any big plans for the future? Yes definitely, after the summer I’ll go back to the UK and do my residencies there. I’m a radio presenter on Unity radio as well so I’ll be going back to that and trying to further my radio career.

Who do you think are the big and upcoming artists this year?

For R&B, Dej Loaf and for House, Freejak.

What advice would you give to somebody that wants to become a DJ?

I think it’s easier than it ever has been with the technology, go out and buy whatever you can and start playing around. Record everything you do and put it up on sound cloud or something for your friends and promote it. Persistence is key, I kept e-mailing Tim’s office until somebody got back to me about work experience, then I worked hard and started moving up, until I was warming up for him around the world. And always do stuff for free at the beginning - never ask for money!

What is your greatest achievement in life?

That’s a tough one! Well, I won best radio personality at the Northern Media Awards and that felt pretty good.

nfamous Geordie lass, Cheryl, rose to fame in 2000 when she auditioned for popular TV show Popstars: The Rivals. Fast forward just 15 years and the child who grew up on a council estate in Newcastle is literally demanding six figure sums and has just been announced as the only female judge on this year’s X Factor, a first for the UK judging panel.

From Rags to Riches

Previous to her rising stardom Cheryl, formerly known as Tweedy, was born 30th June 1983 in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up on council estates in Walker and Heaton. Being one of five children, she was always fighting for the attention of mum Joanne and father Gary. Although her parents were together for more than ten years they decided to split when Cheryl was just eleven years old causing heartbreak for the Fight For This Love singer. Cheryl became interested in dancing from an early age; she began sequence dancing at the age of four before joining The Royal Ballet’s summer school at the age of nine. After being recognised for her dancing ability, she occasionally appeared doing dance recitals on different television shows in the UK, such as Gimme 5, in 1993. Not only did her dancing talents allow her to be acknowledged, she also won recognition in several modeling competitions, including the titles of Boots Group’s “bonniest baby”, Mothercare’s “Happy Faces Portrait” competition, “Best Looking Girl of Newcastle”, The Evening Chronicle’s “Little Miss and Mister”, and “Most Attractive Girl” at the Metro Centre. She made appearances in adverts for companies such as; British Gas, an SCS Furniture store advert, and an

Eldon Square Christmas advert with her younger brother. Although her media career seemed to be taking a turn for the better, it seemed to be taking a toll on her school life. She attended Walker Comprehensive School in Newcastle between September 1994 and July 1999, and left at 16 with little qualifications. Just a year after leaving school Cheryl bagged herself a spot on Popstars and became part of the sensational new band Girls Aloud. Cheryl joined the gorgeous lineup consisting of bandmates: Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh. Their debut single Sound Of the Underground was voted Christmas number one in 2002 and earnt them their first UK number one. The girls success is evident, as their songs I’ll Stand by You, Walk

This Way and The Promise, have all charted at number one. Not only did their singles do well but also two of their albums have reached the top of the UK Albums Chart: their greatest hits album The Sound of Girls Aloud and 2008’s Out of Control, both immediately became number one and sold over one million copies. Not only were their talents acknowledged by the UK music charts, they were also nominated for five Brit Awards, winning Best Single in 2009 for The Promise. They also had seven certified albums and won the Guinness Book of Record Award for most successful reality TV group. Unfortunately for the group, rifts started to form between members and Cheryl announced in a statement that it was the right time for the girls to split after their

GOING SOLO

Before the girls split, Cheryl, then known as Cheryl Cole due to her relationship with Chelsea FC football player Ashley Cole, was asked to become a judge on ITV’s The X Factor. Knowing that it was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed, she was quick to say yes and was given the girls category where she went on to win with the amazing Alexandra Burke. Luck seemed to be in Cheryl’s favour when she returned to Series Six and bagged her second consecutive win with Joe McElderry. It wasn’t until after 2008 when Cheryl was asked to be part of infamous black-eyed peas artist Will.I.Am’s single Heartbreaker that she started off on her solo career. Unfortunately in July 2009, Girls Aloud released a statement announcing that they were taking a year break to focus on their solo careers, but claimed they would create a reunion album in 2010. Having split from the girl band Cheryl released her debut solo album 3 Words. Cheryl’s success was unstoppable. The album went platinum in November 2009 and after performing the single Fight for this Love on the X Factor it became the fourth best selling single of 2009. Not only this, the single became certified silver in the UK and her third single in the album Parachute was certified gold. It is no wonder that ITV were quick to give Cheryl a one-off TV programme. The show called Cheryl Cole’s Night In was hosted by popular television presenter Holly Willoughby and featured music and interviews with Cheryl as well as other artists and friends of Cheryl including Alexandra Burke Rhianna, Will Young, Snow Patrol and Will.i.am. Similar to most of Cheryl’s ventures the TV programme was a success and gained over 5 million viewers in its first airing. Since then Cheryl has released three more studio albums; Messy Little Raindrops, which went platinum in 2010, and A Milllion Lights which was released in 2012 and doubled the number of pre orders than Justin Beiber (the most popular artist of the time) and Only Human, which featured, hit single I Don’t Care.

THE X FACTOR

Although the X Factor was successful for Cheryl after her two initial consecutive wins with Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry, Cheryl faced scrutiny when she returned for Series Seven after she rejected popular contestant Gamu Nhengu to go through to the live shows in favour of Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel, even though both failed their performances at judges’ houses. She then received more criticism after she refused

to vote for an act in the fifth week, which resulted in claims that the show was fixed. Although her contestant Rebecca Ferguson lost out to rival judge Danni Minogues Matt Cardle, Cheryl was offered the opportunity by Simon Cowell to work alongside himself, LA Reid and Paula Abdul to work on the X Factor US. Unfortunately for Cheryl, only after 3 weeks of the show it was announced that she would not be working on the show amid claims from Simon Cowell that she was better suited for the UK version, she lost her place on the panel to N-Dubz performer Tulisa Constalvos. Cheryl claimed that she had quit the US show and also snubbed the decision to return to the UK version of the show of her own accord. In December 2012, she sued the American producers of The X Factor for £1.4 million. She received £1.1 million for the first season, and then sued for £1.25 million for the second season, plus additional damages. In 2014 Cheryl shocked the world when she signed a £1.5 million contract to return as a judge on the UK X Factor alongside Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Mel B. This year it is tipped that Cheryl will be the only female judge on the panel. Long timer panelist Louis Walsh is being replaced by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw and former Spice Girl Mel B has been axed.

PERSONAL LIFE

As well as being a well-known model, singer and dancer Cheryl also earned a WAG status in 2004 when she began dating Chelsea football player Ashley Cole. After only a year of dating they were engaged in Dubai in June 2005. On 15th July 2006 they were married in a huge ceremony in North West London. It was rumored that the deal that they signed with OK Magazine regarding sales of the wedding photos was worth £1 million. Cheryl’s relationship with the slimy football star was a rocky one amid claims that he cheated on regular occasions with lap dancers, girls in nightclubs and X-rated video stars. In 2010 Cheryl made the decision to divorce Ashley after explicit photos of him appeared on a topless website. Although it was revealed that Cheryl and Ashley reunited on several occasions after their split, she was keen to move on and had relationships with several other men such as her backing dancer Tre Holloway. It was then revealed in July 2014 that Cheryl married her partner of 3 months Jean- Bernard Fernandez Versini in a secret marriage—Cheryl announced she was a newly wed by posting a photo of her ring to her 1.4 million Instagram followers. It is clear that Cheryl is a woman of many talents; she has excelled herself in all paths of her career and is a clear example of a strong, independent woman.

The Invasion Of Hollywood’s IT List

rom Superman to Spiderman, Harry Potter to The Hobbit, these addictive films and series have captured the world with their epic dramas and scandalous storylines. Normally big Hollywood names would take centre stage in these famous franchises but more recently we have witnessed

Tom Hardy Gorgeous Brit actor Tom Hardy has

been thrust into the attention of mainstream audiences with roles in Inception, Batman and Bronson. The actor has been steadily working on both stage and screen for over 15 years since his television debut in the mini-series Band of Brothers. His big Hollywood break came in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster army film Black Hawk Down and as the villain Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002. However the role that really catapulted him to the Hollywood A List was Bane in Batman flick The Dark Knight Rises with his menacing physique and scrambled voice he had audiences terrified. Although not as big a hit as Batman, his gripping performance of Charles Bronson in the autobiographic tale of the hardened career criminal has got to be one of the actors best films to date. Tom was born in Hammersmith, West London to British parents and studied at the prestigious Reed’s School in Surrey. He won The Big Breakfast´s “Find me a Supermodel”competition aged 21 and had a brief contract with agency Models One. His life has not always been rosy as Tom has admitted having an alcohol dependency problem that he battled for five years before seeking help. He also has a son called Louis with his ex wife Rachel Speed and recently got married to long term girlfriend Charlotte Riley. He resides in London and has indicated that he always will, preferring the normality of Britain to the craziness of LA.

a serious invasion of British talent. Flying the flag for the UK are Henry Cavill, Andrew Garfield, Emma Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Redmayne and James McAvoy to name but a few. We give you a rundown on the talented Brits taking Tinseltown by storm.

Emma Watson Actress, humanitarian, graduate

and ambassador – Emma Watson is an incredibly accomplished and versatile young lady. First appearing on our screens as dorky, bushy-haired, know-it-all Hermione Granger, to being cast as the pristine, gorgeous princess Belle – Watson’s career has definitely blossomed. The British beauty has acquired some strong fans thanks to her stint in the Harry Potter franchise, with a staggering 16.1 million followers on Twitter. Away from the big screen, Watson has proved she is more than just a pretty face. Taking a break from acting, the accomplished star graduated from the prestigious Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. As if that wasn’t enough, she has also become a huge name with regard to the promotion of gender equality and was subsequently announced as the Ambassador for UN Women Goodwill. She intends to dedicate her time towards the empowerment of young women and is in the midst of her HeForShe campaign. With her numerous endeavours and acting ventures, Watson has certainly carved an untouchable and successful career for herself. We cannot wait to see this multi-talented princess come to life in the live action movie Beauty and the Beast.

Henry Cavill Smoulderingly good looking with a

chiseled body to match, Henry Cavill was a natural choice for producers to take the lead role in Superman hit Man of Steel. Born and raised in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Henry was born the fourth of five boys and attended the prestigious Stowe School in Buckinghamshire. He got a lucky break in the hit film Stardust and then went on take the lead role in Immortals and Cold Light of Day alongside Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. His stock is set to rise even higher, with the followup film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice due for release next year. Pundits are already tipping this to be the hit film of 2016. What most people don´t know is that Henry´s talents go beyond the silver screen, with producing and directing also on his impressive resume. In 2014 he set up Promethean Productions with his brother Charlie and producer Rex Glensy. The UK based company´s first feature film Stratton is an action thriller based on the true story of Royal Marine, Duncan Falconer. Marbella Rocks journalist Jo Ward was lucky to enough to interview Henry on a recent trip to Gibraltar where he was training with the marines. She told us he is even more gorgeous in the flesh and struggled to concentrate on her interview questions because she was so flabbergasted by him! Glamour readers agreed as he topped their poll as the World´s Sexiest Man in 2012.

FEATURES Richard Madden If you have never heard of Robb Stark,

or the Starks in general, then you must have been living under a rock! If you really haven’t heard of him, then read no further as it contains some spoilers. Richard Madden played the noble and beloved Robb Stark, King of Winterfell in the much-admired series Game of Thrones. After we witnessed the brutal beheading of his father, Eddard Stark, in season one, we should have expected the Lannisters to recreate a similar and untimely death for his first-born son. The penultimate episode in season three, ‘The Red Wedding’, has definitely gone down in TV history as one of the most tragic and heartbreaking of all time. He certainly wasn’t a ruthless King, which made his death all the more unfortunate, and justified why no one in Game of Thrones should ever attend a wedding – ever! However, it seems Madden has landed on his feet by being cast as the ever- so-handsome Prince Charming. His acclaimed performance as the Prince is something every woman will want to watch. The movie was released on 13th March – Prince Charming has finally been unveiled.

Dan Stevens He first set pulses racing as the dapper suitor of Lady Mary in Downton Abbey. After much courting, the two lovebirds walked down the aisle and had a beautiful baby boy quite soon after. So it was all the more devastating when Julian Fellowes tragically killed off the beloved Matthew Crawley on a Christmas Day Special! However, it seems as if this risky gamble by Stevens has paid off. Since his departure from Downton, he has been a hot commodity in Hollywood, having appeared in several box office films, The Guest and The Fifth Estate to name a few. However, no one was happier than his co-star, Watson, when Stevens was cast as the rugged yet tortured Beast in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast. She first teased fans by re-tweeting an image posted by Stevens himself that read ‘Beast Mode’. She then confirmed it with a tweet accompanied by an image of Stevens – “Could not be more happy... Welcome aboard #beautyandthebeast”. We cannot wait to see Stevens’ transition from the ever so gentlemanly Matthew Crawley into the tormented, iconic Beast.

Lily James Lily James has made quite the name for herself thanks to her

endearing character on Downton Abbey. In recent episodes her character, Lady Rose MacClare, has dominated the storylines due to her controversial marriage to Atticus Aldridge. With Downton’s strong following, it’s difficult to see James playing anything else but the loveable, cheeky Lady Rose. However, her career has definitely catapulted into a new league with the British beauty being cast as Ella in the live action film Cinderella. James has been travelling the world to promote the much-anticipated movie directed by Kenneth Branagh and is captivating audiences with her natural, down-to-earth, giggly personality. Ironically, the stunning actress initially read lines for Anastasia, one of the wicked stepsisters. However, thanks to her luscious blonde locks and uncanny resemblance to the legendary princess, James was asked to read lines for the beautiful protagonist, Cinderella.

Andrew Garfield Born in LA but raised in the UK from the age of 3, Andrew Garfield

is the quirky actor that has taken the Amazing Spiderman franchise to the highest heights. While not a muscly superhero like fellow Brit actor Cavill his reprisal of Peter Parker has made him top of the list of “It” actors in Hollywood. He has also earned a lead role in the new Michael Scorcese flick Silence, due for release next year. Garfield made his feature film debut in the 2007 ensemble drama Lions for Lambs alongside George Clooney. He first came to international attention in 2010 with supporting roles in the smash film The Social Network, for which he received both Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, and Never Let Me Go, for which he received a Saturn Award. He resides in LA but regularly visits his friends and family in Epsom, Surrey.

Benedict Cumberbatch Benedict Cumberbatch has appeared in his fair share of

blockbusters. From 12 Years a Slave to The Hobbit, War Horse and The Imitation Game, there isn’t a role he hasn’t conquered. One of his biggest acting works to date has to be Sherlock. He has been part of this longstanding journey since 2010, along with his trusty sidekick, Dr Watson played by fellow Brit actor Martin Freeman. Although his acting career courts much attention, his wedding to Sophie Turner in February certainly attracted the press and fans. The smitten lovebirds wed on Valentine’s Day in the Isle of Wight and are expecting their first child together. However, it doesn’t seem that the Oscar-nominee will have time to take a break, as he already has six projects lined up between now and 2016!

FEATURES Luke Evans

Luke Evans has already appeared in his fair share of blockbusters. Being no stranger to the world of fantasy, Evans played Bard in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as well as starring in Universal’s Dracula Untold. It is no wonder the Welsh hunk was cast as Gaston in the upcoming live action film Beauty and the Beast. This multi-faceted actor will play the handsome, yet arrogant antagonist who tries to steal Belle’s heart. 2016 might seem like a long way off, but it will certainly be worth the wait to see Evans in this challenging role with such a talented ensemble.

Rosamund Pike Deviating significantly from the

magical world of Disney into a much darker territory, Rosamund Pike’s most recent role was a challenging character to capture. That may be an understatement. Her acclaimed performance as psychotic, manipulative Amy Dunne in the hit thriller Gone Girl was definitely an Oscar worthy performance, even though Julianne Moore stole that crown – understandably! Even so, her portrayal of Amy was so accurate and chilling, something every woman would hate to be compared to, unfortunately for Kim Kardashian that’s exactly what her brother Rob did – poor Kim! Well lucky for Pike, she seems a far cry from Amy Dunne. She gave birth only a few months ago, but there’s no stopping

this mega-talented actress, as she already has some exciting projects in the pipeline – The Mountain Between Us, The Bends, The Deep Blue Good-By, Thunderbirds Are Go! and Return to Sender.

Eddie Redmayne Prior to the Oscars, Eddie

Redmayne was tipped as the favourite to be awarded the prestigious Academy Award. His acutely accurate portrayal of the legendary Stephen Hawking blew his fellow nominees out of the water. The actor appeared on several American chat shows before his big win and won over the crowds with his humbling and quirky persona. Unlike a lot of actors, Redmayne was keen to pursue his studies and after leaving Eton (Prince William was a fellow pupil) he studied History of Art at Cambridge. Alongside his studies he also modeled! He recently married his childhood sweetheart, Hannah Bagshawe, at Babington House in Somerset with a winter wonderland-themed ceremony. Sorry ladies, he is officially off the market!

James McAvoy James has been part of one of the

biggest movie franchises to date, the X-Men series. Lucky for McAvoy he was joined by an absolutely stellar, and very good looking, cast including Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult and Peter Dinklage.

However, the X-Men days are far from over with their newest film, X-Men Apocalypse premiering in 2016. The ever so talented McAvoy will reprise his role as Charles Xavier in this hotly anticipated sci-fi adventure. Spiderman, Superman, Cinderella, X-Men, Beauty and the Beast, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones – all our favourite Brits have appeared in these mega worldwide franchises. It’s safe to say they all have credible résumés – imagine if they collaborated in an epic movie all together! Watch this space…

OF AR-DVERTISING

agazines have always relied on numerous advertisers to help supplement magazine production, many competing with each other for the reader’s attention. They all look for some means to attract the reader’s eye and hopefully an interest in their particular products or offerings. Any advertiser placing their ad can only assume that their ad will be seen. Whether the reader of the magazine will take the time to look at their product or offer, and furthermore convert that advert to an actual sale, was something that up to now was almost impossible to gauge. But what if that could all now change? What if by using interactive content and allowing this to be tracked you could supply the advertiser with how many people had taken the time to engage with the advert? What if readers could respond to the ad using what we call Augmented Reality, or ‘AR’? AR lets readers see more straight away, whether it be a closer look at the product spec, a video, a 3D immersive walk around a show house, a trailer of a movie or the latest new dance track. That is the beauty of Augmented Reality, it covers all aspects of commercial appeal. How about a club or restaurant? Readers can first ‘visit’ it via AR with a video or live stream. If they enjoy the atmosphere they may be encouraged to instantly book a table or buy tickets directly from their mobile device from the comfort of the beach, a cafe or from their very own home without having to type in a website address or type in a phone

number. By augmenting an advert with digital media agency, SmartAR Media and displaying a small iPlayAR logo, the viewer knows that the advert is interactive and can engage with it by simply opening the app and viewing the page through the applications interface. Let the magic begin! The Augmented Reality experience isn’t limited to just off the page advertising. It can be used on product packaging, posters even buildings, in fact just about any generic item or object one could want to use. For example if a car manufacturer wished, you could set the app to recognise specific models of car and link directly to a test drive booking, video, spec sheet or nearest dealership. All sound a little far fetched? Why not look for the images around this article showing the iPlayAR logo, download the app and try it for yourself? THE WORLD OF AR IS ONLY LIMITED BY YOUR IMAGINATION! As an advertiser or marketer using this medium you have full Google Analytics at your disposal to gauge downloads and visits. As a user of the app, you gain instant information directly related to the advert or item of interest to you without having to trawl through a website to locate the item or information yourself. It’s instant gratification and a more exciting and immersive experience than merely reading an advert and seeing a static picture. If you like what you see there are standard links to directly call or email the

advertiser or link to their website through your smartphone or iPad device. What is more exciting is the development taking place on wearable products which will allow for these experiences to be enjoyed through special glasses, so a walk through of a house or museum or historic site could in effect take place from anywhere in the world immersing you fully into anything or any local on. Imagine you are interested in buying a lovely yacht that happens to be moored in Miami, or a house, or a wedding venue or honeymoon hotel, no problem. If the venue or place has been augmented by the seller via SmartAr Media, you will be able to access the 3D walkthroughs and videos that make this possible directly through your smart device and a WiFi or 3G/4G connection. In reality there are so many ways that this technology can be used already. It is just a case of the creativity and willingness of the advertisers to appreciate the value

Marbella Rocks recently interviewed Paul Benewith, Technical Director at SmartAR Media agency from Surrey, England. SO PAUL, WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY (‘AR’)? Simply put, Augmented Reality is immersive technology that enables virtual media and information such as: video, graphics, images, audio, 360 degree worlds and much more to be displayed in the real world and in realtime via the camera functionality of a smart device such as mobile phones and tablets. It enhances your current perception of reality and enables artificial information to be overlaid on your actual view and to immerse you in a fully interactive

By downloading our free application; iPlayAR, on your phone or smart device and launching it. Simply hold the device over the selected ‘trigger image’ in full view of the application screen which will load the augmented content. Only images or ‘triggers’ that have been augmented by our digital media department will be recognised by the iPlayAR app and load the correct content, turning a static image, magazine advert or

billboard poster for example into a digitally interactive virtual world. YOU MENTIONED A MAGAZINE ADVERT - HOW WOULD THIS WORK THEN? Good question! So as an example, if you were looking at an advert for a property for sale in a magazine and the advert had been augmented by us, viewing that advert through the iPlayAR App would trigger the digital content, in turn, ’transporting’ you virtually into that house enabling you to look around it as if you there yourself in real time. You would be able to look up, down and all around - from the marble floor to the lights on the ceiling and even see the view out of the windows - by simply using the screen of your smart device or phone as your virtual eyes. THAT SOUNDS AMAZING BUT WHAT ELSE COULD AUGMENTED REALITY BE GOOD FOR? Anything anywhere in the world from golf courses to hotel rooms. As another example; If you were looking at an advert or poster of a car for sale - then using the iPlayAR app it would enable you to be ‘transported’ into the driver’s seat and look around the interior as if you were there in real time, if you wanted to book a test drive then with one click you could call your local dealer direct without switching applications or typing a single number on your phone. HOW CAN WE SEE THIS IN ACTION? There are some good examples included in the feature, so your readers can experience ‘AR’ for themselves by downloading the free iPlayAR app and using it to interact with the unique augmented images. The images can trigger a variety of content and immerse you into

FEATURES different experiences including but not limited to: ● Displaying images located outside of the page boundaries ● Playing audio files or videos ● Allowing interaction with virtual 3D games ● Transporting the viewer into a fully interactive 360 degree world ● Providing links to products in a shop or e-commerce website ● Dialing numbers or connect to email directly at the touch of a single graphic ● Clicking on products within adverts to purchase them directly ● The benefits are endless for both readers and advertisers alike. HOW COULD THIS BENEFIT MARBELLA ROCKS? Readers of Marbella Rocks will be able to have a much more interesting and interactive experience through viewing augmented images. An advert for a restaurant with augmented images could enable the reader to walk round the restaurant as if they were there, browse the menu, watch a video telling you about an upcoming event, read reviews, check availability and with one click call or e-mail and make a booking or buy tickets with or without discount codes. It could enable them to buy a jacket they like - in the colour and size of their choice - directly from an article in the magazine. They could check film listings at all local cinemas, read film reviews and reserve tickets, all through viewing digital information from a printed page using Augmented Reality. They can access discounts and offers exclusive to the magazine and to those specific adverts. Advertisers are able to show potential customers much more and involve them in an interactive experience that creates far more interest and excitement than simply

reading an article. HOW COULD THIS BENEFIT THE READERS’ EXPERIENCE OF MARBELLA ROCKS? Good question! Well, the benefits are endless really but I would like to stress that the benefits are shared between the advertisers, your readers and of course yourselves too. It is a win-win for all. By downloading our FREE application your readers can very quickly and easily engage in ‘AR’ within the pages of your magazine by holding the device over adverts and page layouts where there is an iPlayAR logo. The application will then load the content specific to that advert or page and allow them to enter the world of virtual reality. It will then allow the reader to experience digital media via the printed magazine and allows them to access discounts and offers exclusive to your magazine or advertisers. They can make calls and emails without having to switch from applications on their smart devices, making the whole experience seamless and incredibly convenient which, let’s be honest, is the way in which the world is now, convenient! At the end of the day, we have our phones and tablets with us 24/7! SO OUR READERS BENEFIT BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR ADVERTISERS? This is where things get interesting as currently there is no way of gauging how many people view a printed advert or view a page in a magazine despite how many copies fly off the shelves. With iPlayAR we can provide statistics as to how many people viewed that page or advert via the application, where in the world they are located when they viewed it, how long they viewed it for and so on. This alone is worth its weight in gold and is a

great tool - but lets not forget that it essentially combines the digital world with the printed world, 3D & 2D! This therefore extends every advertiser’s physical and virtual space and allows them to display additional information or products without changing their branded advert or advertising campaign by over populating the page as the ‘AR’ is placed over this page or beside it when viewed through the iPlayAR app. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF THE IPLAYAR APP THEN? We are a relatively young company, but in a very short time we have created something that we truly believe IS the future as the world becomes more dependent on apps driven by day-to-day chores and assistance. We are focusing on using our own agency, SmartAR Media, to create these amazing advertising and printed campaigns for our clients and to make our app iPlayAR the most widely-used application of its kind throughout Europe. We have magazines in Spain, interactive maps throughout Europe and have some exciting prospects in Gibraltar and the UK. We have also built the app to serve the real estate market and you will have seen a truly great example of this on the surrounding page. In a nutshell, the app and its benefits and uses are limitless and 2015 is the year for Augmented Reality. We are looking forward to a bright future but the hurdle a new technology will always face is ‘exposure’, I hope that Marbella Rocks can expand our exposure and embrace what we have to offer. HOW DOES IT WORK, HOW CAN I GET IT?

the FREE Using iPlayAR, scan any 1Download iPlayAR app on 2wherever image page or advert you see the iPlayAR logo.

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The Champions League is said to be one of the most important sporting events in the football season with teams from all over Europe competing to win the title of European Champions.

HISTORY

The Champions League was started in 1955 after the first congress of the Union of European Football Association (UEFA), which was held in Vienna. The Union decided to create a league which would challenge teams not only from their own country, but also from all over Europe. Whereas many of UEFA’s founder members were more interested in establishing a national team competition, the French sports daily L’Equipe and their then-editor Gabriel Hanot, were championing the cause for a European-wide club competition. Hanot, together with colleague Jacques Ferran, designed a blueprint for a challenge tournament to be played on Wednesdays under floodlights. It was there that they decided that the participating teams would not have to be the champions of their country but the clubs with the most fan appeal. Clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea F.C. and Bayern Munich were among the first ever eight clubs to be chosen to participate. Unlike cups such as the Premier League, no one club has been able to hold the title for a lengthy period of time. Although Real Madrid won the first-ever five finals when the league began, their win in 1998 was their first in 32 years; Ajax waited 22 years to add a fourth title to the hattrick obtained in the early 1970s; and Bayern Munich’s penalty shoot-out success in Milan in 2001 ended a 26-year wait for their fourth success. It is safe to say that Champions League football has produced some of the best games known to football history. Some of the most celebrated fixtures in football have occurred throughout the years of

FEATURES the European Cup; from Madrid’s 7-3 defeat of Frankfurt in 1960 to AC Milan’s 4-0 success against Barcelona in 1994 and Manchester United’s late heroics against Bayern Munich in 1999.

HOW IT WORKS

There are five stages of the Champions League, which start with the Group Stage, which was only added in 1992. The top four teams from the top three countries, which are Spain, England and Germany, get immediate acceptance into the Champion’s League, whilst the other countries are decided by an official UEFA coefficient system which tracks the teams success over a five-year period. Since the league first begun the league has grown from eight to 32 teams being involved in the initial tournament. After the beginning group stages, there are two draws, a semi-final and then a final tournament for the cup. This year was one of the most exciting semi-finals as it involved Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich; three of the teams which hold the most consecutive wins throughout the league, making this year’s June 6 final one of the best games to watch this year!

THE FINAL

The big game falls on June 6th with Juventus playing Barcelona in Berlin. It’s no doubt that both teams will be fighting for the title seeing as Barcelona hasn’t won the league since 2010 and Juventus since 1995!

NOT TO MISS

2015 has been a big year for sport already, with Chelsea winning the Premier League and Floyd Mayweather beating Manny Pacquiao in a once-in-a-lifetime fight. But there is still so much more to come and we at Marbella Rocks wouldn’t want you to miss out, so make sure to watch…

THE ASHES

The Ashes, which will be held in England, is a cricket must-see. Held every four years this is the biggest event of the cricket calendar. This year, The Ashes event has been brought forward by two years to

avoid clashes with the World Cup. The competition between Australia and England will be held between 8th July and 24th August.

THE RUGBY WORLD CUP

We might have a while to wait before this major sporting event but we had to warn you now! The Rugby World Cup is a major do-notmiss whether you’re a rugby fan or not. The cup, which is being held at Twickenham Rugby Stadium, kicks off with England vs. Fiji on 18th September so be sure to be ready.

THE FORMULA ONE-WORLD

CHAMPIONSHIPS

If you haven’t already, then you better start watching the 2015 Grand Prix races. If you’re an adrenaline junkie or just love a thrill then this is the sport to watch for you. The Grand Prix has been running since March in Australia and will run until the final race at the amazing track in Abu Dhabi on November 29th. Make sure to watch the Canadian Grand Prix from June 5th to 7th and the Austrian Grand Prix from 19th to 21st June and make sure you’re up to speed for the grand final in November.

Summer Gala

IN AID OF CHILDREN WITH CANCER UK

E

very summer, Sandro Morelli, the charismatic owner of Villa Tiberio restaurant, puts on a charity gala that raises thousands of pounds for Children with Cancer UK. In the past seven years alone, this annual event has raised over a quarter of a million pounds for important cancer research and care for children with cancer. This year the eighth annual event on June 7th will be an impressive affair, with up to 400 guests attending the prestigious threecourse dinner that Sandro and Villa Tiberio lay on. Celebrity guests are always in attendance with the likes of Des O´Conner, Harry Redknapp and Mitch Winehouse supporting and attending the event. There is always a charity auction to raise funds with popular signed football memorabilia amongst the great prize items on offer. Those familiar with frequenting the prestigious Golden Mile restaurant will have witnessed the recent letter he has blown up on a billboard from Children with Cancer UK thanking him for his endless charity work.

Marbella Rocks had the pleasure of interviewing Sandro about the Gala and why he feels it´s in his blood to give back to good causes, such as this. “We are here in Marbella… it´s not just sunshine, beaches and golf. We need to care about people in the world. Cancer affects everyone and Children with Cancer UK is a most impressive organisation that does so much to help with the research and care of young people with this terrible disease.” “I used to live in London for many years and have visited Great Ormond Street Hospital several times, where Children with Cancer UK operate from, and it is a tremendous organisation. It breaks your heart seeing patients as young as two or three years old in hospital essentially fighting for their lives.” Having lost many close friends to cancer in recent years, Sandro continues open-heartedly: “Hundreds of billions are spent each year on nuclear warheads, atomic bombs, submarines and other warfare. It doesn´t make sense. I really don´t understand it. Every second a child

dies of starvation or illness, yet this is still happening.” “Put together 20 children together of all nationalities in a room and they will play. It is the natural instinct of children. They are not brought up to fight and have wars. Poor education, ignorance and poverty that come only when we are adults cause this. I just want to give young people, suffering from a terrible affliction such as cancer, a fighting chance in this world.” Tickets for a three-course meal and drinks at Villa Tiberio´s “Spring into Summer Charity Gala” on Saturday June 7th are priced at only €75 per person. Please contact +34 952 771 779 or email: rest.villatiberio@ hotmail.com to make your reservation for this fantastic event.

have just arrived from a year living in Italy to my new home, Marbella. Why might well be the question? Well here it is....because of the beautiful climate, breathtaking sea views and the utterly marvellous, ubiquitous Britishness here in Marbella. What a winning combination. Where may l ask can you get a daily deepening suntan, accompanied by a local shop of Waitrose products in Iceland? Where can you cruise with the roof down through blue skies and sunshine to a nearby TopShop or Primark and then round it all off with an Indian takeaway and a chilled glass of wine whilst watching the latest episode of Eastenders? Utter joy.... In the end it was my Britishness that prompted me to move to Marbella. Yes, much to my surprise - and don’t breathe a word to a soul - as l rather had myself down as a sophisticated ‘international woman’ - but OMG and Rule Brittannia!! Peel back the figure sculpting lycra of my latest collection and underneath l am as British as you can get. Brits have honed the art of embracing and adoring all cultures and making them our own because we are not

threatened by them. Our Britishness is undiminished by our enjoyment of the rest of the world: their products, their cultures and their delicious foods. We celebrate them all, whilst remaining innately British. Take it away from us and we wail, “No! l would rather like it back!” After years of living in Italy with foreign television and endless pasta choices, I was fooling myself that it was okay to live without my gorgeous British comforts that I had taken for granted. Now just the words “Italian” and “restaurant” are enough to glaze my eyes over (who would have thought it?). I could not be more proud of our unique abilities to absorb other cultures but remain the same. British fashion, as with all nations, can boast a highend standard of excellence. We have Burberry, famous for its iconic trenchcoat (no prizes for guessing why we have a great need for stylish protection from the rain!), Mulberry for its cool of the city and craftsmanship of the countryside and Barbour for its wax jackets. Aquascutum is famous for the raincoat - you can see a pattern emerging here! Elsewhere, Asprey are known for their luxury goods from jewellery to time pieces and silverware with exceptional craftsmanship and design. Dunhill for fine fragrances and elegant clothing. Plus we have produced our own darlings of the “designer label” including Katherine Hamnett, Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, Mary Quant and Vivienne Westwood to name but a few. But for me what resonates the most is the hail of the “high street” where after a day’s work we can shop until late and buy something gorgeous to reinvent ourselves that is affordable and still cool. We also have classically British style icons such as Cara Delevigne, Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham that ooze effortless chic. Now not only can we aspire to look like our favourite stars - because of the high street – we can afford to.

egend has it that the night before Midsummer’s Day is a magical time for love. It’s one of the biggest traditional events in Sweden that occurs on Friday between the 21st and 25th of June. Joyful, large gatherings are spent mostly on the countryside, full of laughter and song to celebrate the longest day of the year. When it comes to fashion and beauty, with so much inspiration up for grabs, treat this summer like an endless love affair and look the part. Get into the summer bohemian style by channeling these gorgeous, free-spirited styling ideas influenced by the Swedish Midsummer. According to Swedish custom, everyone wears a floral crown. Flower-dressed hair is not only the stuff of poetry. The key to making the look fresh is to keep the hair soft and loose; dreamy and wavy. Indulge in a selection of clothes that are made up of off-the-shoulder tops and dresses of dreamy lace. Hairstyle and make-up can be sweetened up with the most tender and delicate of shades. Focus on pastel hues, delicious blush pink, baby blue, mint green and lavender tones. Just bloom! During heated summer days, we tend to wear less make-up, and going au-natural for the season comes both easy and natural. My focus is that you can still look effortlessly stunning without the hassle of piling on a lot of make-up. If you prep the skin on your face correctly before you add your actual make-up, you will not need as much make-up to “fix” any given skin situation you might be faced with, allowing an opportunity for your natural, flawless, glowing skin to shine through. Besides, nothing feels better than a radiant and youthful complexion. Skin is the true foundation and, let’s be honest, skin does not look it’s happiest when it is dry, tired, cracked or oily. Even the most beautiful blush or technically applied contour can’t look its best if the skin’s not in good condition. Before Make-up Skincare prep is the key to looking beautiful. Follow these simple guidelines and your skin will be sure to glow.

Step 1 Cleanse

Select a high-quality cleansing product to dissolve makeup, dirt, sweat and even pollution, which will otherwise block pores and keep other products from getting in and doing their work. Make sure that the cleanser you choose is suitable for your skin type. When your skin is squeaky-clean you are ready for the next steps.

Step 2 Exfoliate

An imperative skincare practice, gentle exfoliation will slough off dead skin cells from the skin’s outermost layer and leave new, rejuvenated skin exposed at the surface. Feel free to skip cleansing on days you exfoliate, since sloughing also removes dirt and oil. It also helps turn your face into a clean, smooth

HAIR & BEAUTY

canvas, which will aid your skin in absorbing the beneficial ingredients from serums, creams and facial masks. Consistent exfoliation may even help improve mild acne and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Limit exfoliation to 2-3 times a week to avoid irritation.

Step 3 Toner

Aside from removing any last traces of dirt after cleansing, most toners are designed to minimise the appearance of pores and restore your skin’s pH balance. Plus they prepare skin for the absorption of serums and creams and help to regulate oil production and secretion. Tip: If you’re using a pH- balanced cleanser, there’s no need for toner.

Step 4 Serum

Serums are the true super-heroes of any skincare line and should always be applied before any of your other products, so that their powerful ingredients can quickly soak into your pores and make your face glow. They have a high concentration of active ingredients and contain the most potent dose of anti-aging ingredients, antioxidants, peptides and skin brighteners. Only a few drops are required for efficiency, as the skin absorbs them quickly and deeply.

Step 5 Eye Cream

The skin around the eye area is delicate and an eye cream is very different from a day cream. It focuses on protecting and moisturising, decongesting and preventing

premature aging. Pat it on prior to moisturising. Dab a small amount around your eye area using your ring fingers, but never on the eyelid.

Step 6 Moisturiser

A good day cream juggles two jobs - hydration and protection. Moisturiser forms a fine, protective layer on the skin’s surface that acts as a barrier between the skin and harsh environmental conditions. Its hydrating effect will prevent dry skin and can improve skin’s texture and tone. Pick one that has plant-based moisturisers (natural oils, butters and essential fatty acids penetrate the skin the best). Moreover, topping the eye cream or serum with lotion will actually seal in its active ingredients.

Step 7 Primer

Whether using it to fill in lines, hide pores or just create an even canvas for colour, silicone-based primer is your last step prior to applying make-up. It’s like waterproofing your skin and adding the perfect texture for foundation base to glide on evenly, even on the driest or bumpiest skin. pain is a very popular place to get married, with its beautiful beaches, beach clubs and abundance of hotels. Bridal parties are always looking for the best hair salon to get their hair coiffed for their big day. These range from colours and cuts to bridal hairstyles. Not to mention the bridesmaids and the mothers of the bride and groom! According to Bliss Hair and Beauty, they accommodated approximately 30 wedding parties last year at the salon. Lance mentions that many brides come from Ireland. He recounts how a recent bride came in three days before her wedding with very short, mousy, brown hair asking for first-time colour and something different as she was getting married in three days time not a normal request! Lance persuaded her to go all-over blonde, toned it to a more Nordic, Scandanavian shade and texturised the whole haircut. As you can see from the before and after pictures she looked amazing. This was an unusual and highly enjoyable case as most brides are not that last-minute or brave enough for a complete change, and they mostly have long hair. Most brides are still wearing their hair up or partly up with curls, as they find this stays better and allows them to get on and enjoy their big day rather than fussing about what´s happening to their hair in the 30 degree heat! We also find that most bridal hair looks are still very traditional and classic as in these pictures below. In the second image the bride did not want a traditional look but wanted her long, blonde hair worn up, so we mixed it up a little with different techniques and dressing. Whatever your length, style or vision for your wedding hair please contact our bridal specialist Michelle for a consultation.

SUMMER TRENDS: GREY (BUT NOT LIKE YOUR GRANNY) The hottest colour this summer is grey; as seen on the likes of Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, Nicole Richie and Kelly Osbourne. It does look very cool and edgy but I have to confess I prefer icy and platinum blonde tones as they are more flattering and wearable. Also, achieving the grey look involves your colourist lightening your hair to practically white, before putting a grey tone on. This can be very harmful to your hair unless it is either very strong or in

tip-top condition. If you are a fan of this look and brave enough to go for the change we´d really recommend buying a range of repairing and protecting shampoo and conditioning treatment such as Joico’s K-pak range with Shampoo priced at €24.50, Intense Hydrator €37.50 and Deep Reconstructor €34.95.

ONE DIMENSIONAL BLONDES

Here at Bliss we´ve noticed solid one-dimensional

blondes seem to be more popular than highlights this year. This can range from practically any shade of blonde right through the colour spectrum from honey, strawberry, caramel to the creamier, ash and platinum blondes. There are so many shades to choose from. Make sure you go to the right salon with a colour specialist that can talk you through what look would be best for you, bearing in mind your skin tone, lifestyle and hair care regime.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Flexible dieting How flexible are you?

by Peet Rothwell has lived on the coast for 8 years and is a professional singer by night. His passion is fitness and wellness and along with coaching and personal training, Peet also competes in Men´s Physique Bodybuilding. AS MARBELLA ROCKS NEW RESIDENT FITNESS EXPERT, EACH ISSUE HE WILL BE COVERING ALL WALKS OF FITNESS LIFE, FROM SPORTS AND WELLNESS RIGHT THROUGH TO COMPETITION BODYBUILDING. PEET´S MONTHLY WEIGHT LOSS AND DIET TIPS COUPLED WITH REGULAR GYM AND HEALTHY FOOD REVIEWS SHOULD MAKE FOR AN EXCITING AND UP TO DATE READ FOR THE HEALTHY MINDED.

I’m not asking how your downward dog is or if you can fit yourself in a suitcase. I’m referring to your diet. Often when I chat to my new clients we talk about diet and food habits. It tends to come out that the hardest and most daunting part of starting and following through with a transformation is the boring diet plan. So many coaches and nutritionists will offer a diet plan covering a number of weeks and based on your preferences and allergies, offering you a list of meals and ingredients for the client to stick to religiously. Whilst the consistency of this method is proven and brings results if you have the will power, it tends to be the bending point for most! There is a stigma attached to lapsing and cheating that in turn makes us feel guilty and generally adds a negative air to the whole process. You have to be strongwilled and disciplined to sustain such a method. No thanks mate! This month I’m going to offer you the notion of ‘Flexible Dieting’. This is the method I use to shed body fat and build muscle to prepare for competitions and if it works for me, it can work for you! In a nutshell it goes like this: With flexible dieting we can eat whatever we want, when we want - as long as the numbers add up to a pre-determined daily target. YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS HERE: 1. You can be a coward and be put off by a little jargon and learning. 2. You can keep reading and learn a tiny amount of information that can offer you an alternative to punishing yourself in the kitchen and the gym as well as affecting your pocket.

Reading on? Good choice!

The first thing we need to understand is something I have touched on in a number of previous articles and that is the word ‘macros’. Your macronutrients (macros) are the three main players in your food intake: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. These three elements are found in all our foods and are essential for our body’s growth, repair and daily energy.

PEET’S TIP

TO HELP TRACK MY MACROS I USE THE NOTES ON MY MOBILE PHONE AND WHEN I EAT SOMETHING NEW I WILL JUST QUICKLY MAKE A NOTE IN MY DOSSIER OF THE MACRO CONTENT. FOR EXAMPLE: I HAD A STARBUCKS VANILLA LATTE THE OTHER DAY AND HAD TO COUNT IT IN MY DAILY INTAKE, SO I GOOGLED IT AND

76 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

HEALTH & FITNESS BOOM IN IT WENT. I THEN WROTE IT IN THE NOTES APP FOR THE NEXT TIME. THE BEAUTY OF FLEX DIETING IS THAT WE CAN EAT WHEN WE ARE OUT AND ABOUT AND IF WE STICK TO WELL-KNOWN BRANDS AND COMPANIES THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION CAN OFTEN BE FOUND ONLINE IF NOT ON THE LABEL. HERE IS A SCREENSHOT OF MY PERSONAL NOTES APP. THERE ARE TONS OF APPS OUT THERE THAT CAN TRACK YOUR DAILY MACROS SUCH AS MYFITNESSPAL THAT ARE GREAT. I JUST LIKE TO KEEP THINGS OLD SCHOOL! I KEEP MY PROTEINS, CARBS AND FATS THE SAME FOR THREE DAYS AND THEN HAVE A CHEAT MEAL ON THE FOURTH DAY (REFEED), LIKE A TAKEAWAY OR PIZZA NIGHT, MAYBE EVEN I also like to incorporate a ‘low carb’ day on my third day. CARB CYCLE: Day 1 Diet Day 2 Diet Day 3 Low Carb Day 4 Refeed During the whole 16 weeks of my contest prep I didn’t do more than 45 minutes of cardio exercise a week. Imagine a diet that allows us to eat pizza and chocolate and do little running. The proof is in the pudding so keep reading.

EAT WHAT THE HELL YOU WANT!!

Okay, within reason! I know I said you can eat whatever you want as long as it fits your macros, but be careful, if you have to stick to a day of let’s say: 150g protein, 150g carbs and 40 fat, then hammer a double whopper, large fries and a Coke which comes in at roughly 56.5g protein, 145.9g carbs, 70.6g (bad) fat. Later on you are really going to be limited in what you can have for the rest of your meals to keep the numbers the same. Also, on the other end of the spectrum, if you don’t eat enough you will find that you will have to stay awake at night to have another meal to make up the numbers (YES, we can eat at night!).

EAT YOUR CARBS AT NIGHT

I also said you can eat whenever you want but we need to be mindful here also! If we are going to eat a meal with 70g protein 100g carbs and fat then we are going to overload the

A DRINK OR TWO AND SOME CHOCOLATE. I STILL COUNT THE MACROS AS BEST AS I CAN! THIS IS DESIGNED TO WAKE AND SPEED UP MY METABOLISM SO IT IS ALWAYS AT FULL FAT BURNING SPEED. THIS IS CALLED A ‘CARB CYCLE’. EVERY TWO CYCLES (EIGHT DAYS) TRY TAKING YOUR CARBS DOWN BY 10G THEN KEEP AN EYE OUT TO SEE IF YOU ARE HITTING A PHYSICAL CHANGE. BET YOU DO!!

digestive system and panic it into storing half your food as emergency energy (FAT) so we still have to be clever with our sugar intake and the size of the meals. I’m sure you have all heard the “little but often” saying when it comes to eating, I am always trying to spread my meals for this reason! I also try and save carbs back for when I’m likely to need them. Before and after training is a crucial time and I especially make use of this on a high carb (refeed) day! However saving some carbs for the evening when most of us are inactive and winding down at home is a perfect time as these less active moments we tend to crave and pick. Eating some slow digesting and fibrous carbs like a sweet potato or a cup of oats in the evening could be key to fending off the dreaded snacking monster!

PEET’S TIP

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT EATING A BOWL OF VEG (STARCHY FIBROUS CARBS) CAN REDUCE THE URGE TO SNACK THROUGH OUT THE FIRST PART OF THE DAY! CRUCIAL WHEN TRYING TO SHED THE POUNDS! WARNING: Maths, Science and other Scary words

Let’s calculate those ‘pre-determined daily MACROS’. We are going to calculate the macros for your diet days based on your weight. For my clients I would usually do an individual calculation

based on your physical factors and nutritional limitations but for the purposes of this article, let’s go with this as a guide: I like to start with a percentage split of 40/40/20. PROTEIN: 1g per lb of bodyweight CARBS: 1g per lb of bodyweight FAT: 20% of your total calorie intake EG: if I weigh in at 180lbs that is: PROTEIN 180G (4 calories per gram) 180 x 4 = 720 cal CARBS 180G (4 calories per gram) 180 x 4 = 720 cal FAT 40G (9 calories per gram) 40 x 9 = 360 cal This adds up to 1800 calories in a daily target. Another way to decide is to follow a guideline. For example an average (low active) male is recommended to consume 2000 calories per day, so let’s go by that: 2000/100 = 20(1%) now we want to multiply by 40 (%) 20 x 40 = 800(40%) so now we have 40% of our calories we want to divide by 4 because there are 4 calories to every gram of protein.

ISSUE 11 | MARBELLAROCKS

77

HEALTH & FITNESS 800/4 = 200 200g Protein 200g Carbs Now we need 20% of Fats 2000/100 = 20 now we multiply by 20 (%) 20 x 20 = 400 so now we divide by 9 because we know there are 9 calories in every gram of fat. 400/9 = 44.4 200g protein (40%) 200g Carbs (40%) 44g Fat (20%) NOTE: If you are a more active individual you will want to start with a higher gram to pound ratio or a higher calorie starting point! Now we have our macros for the day, we can be consistent whilst being flexible. Three days of this followed by a low carb day (try 50% to start) then a reefed (cheat) day then start the cycle again. Every two cycles take out 10g carbs and look and feel for a positive reaction! This is how I do it, scary Maths I know, but IT WORKS! Read it again, maybe twice because once you understand this you will be unstoppable!! Do the above coupled with a solid weight-lifting routine and a consistent amount of cardio per week (my whole prep consisted of no more than 45 mins a week.) and you will be a nutritional contortionist on a path to attaining a physique that you never imagined possible! I DARE YOU!

Peet’s progress: THE BIG DAY

Some of you that have read my articles before will know that for almost the last year I have been training, dieting, researching and educating myself to compete at the annual USN Bodypower Classic Men’s Physique Contest held during Bodypower Expo at the NEC, Birmingham. This has been my main focus and long-term goal since I dived head first into the world of fitness. I have dreamed of putting my feet on that stage for so long. It’s been a long year and the last months have at times been grueling with intense training and dieting, not to mention the sacrifice. I haven’t had an alcoholic drink since Boxing Day. IMAGINE! Well, the day finally came and I survived. The morning of the show the queue for registration was colossal and a total of 97 competitors showed up over the four height categories, an incredible amount and a sign of how popular this division of bodybuilding has become. The event was a qualifier for the Amateur Olympia to be held later this year and the standard is generally the highest of any event in the amateur calendar. My goal and aim was to get my feet on the stage and gain crucial experience from throwing myself in. I made the finals and top 15, I was in the first call outs and finished fourth place in a field of 26 in Tall category, just missing out on Olympia qualification by one place. This exceeded my wildest expectations and was an amazing reward for the last 12 months of dedication. There were plenty of times I doubted myself and asked myself why I was doing this but every pulled muscle was worth it for that feeling. I am now hungrier than ever, so watch this space to

78 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

see my progress in my new goal to become a champion! We can always improve not just in fitness but in life. Even when we feel we have reached our limit or hit a plateau we have to believe we can push on and achieve more than we could ever imagine! Positivity, consistency and education will bring success. As we go to press I am preparing to compete in Sevilla at the Campionato de Andalucia and then it’s pizza time and three weeks off! Happy June, have a strong one!

complemented by alfresco dining on the terrace. It can be safely said that Uni provides the perfect backdrop to a summer evening dinner. The extensive menu will excite more traditional purveyors of Japanese cuisine as well as modern Asian fusion lovers. Selecting and ordering dinner is a delightful task, with something to cater for even the most discerning palette.

We enjoyed a Japanese Kirin beer whilst selecting a mouth-watering choice of food from the menu. That was a difficult task in itself as there are so many tempting options to choose from. Uni certainly warrants a return visit on that basis alone. We started off with the Hamachi Sashimi which came with a spicy chilli ponzu dressing and the Spicy Tuna Tartare. Both were exceptional

in taste and presentation. Opting next to try a Peruvian dish we chose the Trio of Tacos; Wagyu with Kimichi, King Crab with Lime and Coriander Spicy Miso and Tuna and Guacamole with Lime - all three didn’t disappoint, offering an explosion of different flavours and textures. Following on we sampled Popcorn Shrimp, a rendition of the famous Nobu Rock Shrimp Tempura, which was equally delightful and one of the best I have ever tasted. Having eaten at several Nobu restaurants around the globe I can make that comparison from experience and with conviction. Back to the Japanese section, we selected a set of Nigiri Sushi including Yellowtail Hamachi, Unagi grilled Eel, Hotategai Scallop, Toro Tuna Belly and Uni Sea Urchin. The Nigiri was exceptional in freshness and flavour,

while the Toro and Unagi particularly impressed me. To round off dinner we indulged in Miso Black Cod and rice to accompany, which was sublimely delicious; sweet and silky to taste. The wine list at Uni is also an impressive affair. Complimenting the flavours of the seafood extravaganza, our attentive waiter recommended an excellent bottle of Spanish Chardonnay, which was the perfect match. In summary, for any occasion a trip to UNI will certainly be a memorable experience based on many reasons - exquisite setting, food prepared and executed to perfection, attentive staff all help to create that “magical experience”. Would I recommend? Absolutely 100%.

lombardo’s

talian cuisine doesn´t get much better than this. Established in 1989, Lombardo´s has stood the test of time because they serve such fantastic, authentic Italian food in the most gorgeous, picturesque, courtyard location of Paniagua in the coast area of Sotogrande. What´s even better is they they don´t charge you the earth for it. A starter, main course, dessert and bottle of wine will set a couple back less than €100. Our testers went for a starter of Gamberoni Alla Diavola and Carpaccio Di Manzo. The prawns were stuffed with garlic and chilli, and had just the right amount of spice. The beef carpaccio with olive oil and lemon was also fantastic, sliced so thinly it melted in your mouth.

For mains there is a huge selection to choose from, depending on your palate, with delights such as fresh fish of the day, meat, steak and calf liver. Plus, with over 12 pizza and 18 pasta dishes, there is indeed something for everyone on this extensive menu. Lombardo´s also offer all pasta dishes in starter-sized portions so you can get a taste of everything on the menu if you order wisely! Our testers opted for the Veal Milanese, which was cooked to perfection and was an extremely generous portion size. The Spaghetti Carbonara and Four Cheese Pizza also ordered were delicious. The Carbonara was loaded with fresh cream, parmesan and bacon. The Green Salad with Goat´s Cheese, Avocado and Honey was a perfect accompaniment to the veal dish although there are eight vegetable sides to choose from

if you prefer. If you can fit it in, the garlic pizza bread is also well worth a taste. Freshly cooked on site, it´s light and airy, unlike greasy garlic breads so many Italian eateries serve these days - this one is dry, yet full of flavour. There is also a plentiful dessert menu and wine matching service. Lombardo´s owners, Sara, Enzo and Stefano, handpick the wines from their favourite regions in Italy and mix it up with the best local wines Spain has to offer. You will not be disappointed. Lombardo´s attentive owners are also on site every night to meet, greet and attend to your every whim. It´s always nice to visit a family-run restaurant and see the owners. You can tell they enjoy being at their restaurant and appreciate their guests. Likewise, a major factor in a restaurant´s success, in our opinion, is where guests can enjoy both the restaurant´s food and unreserved hospitality. Plus, with the brand new Lombardo´s Bar located next to the restaurant there is also somewhere to enjoy preor after-dinner drinks if you want to come out earlier or stay even later. Lombardo´s is open every night from 7pm till late. For reservations please call +34 956 795 924 or email stefano.lombardos@gmail.com

AROMA INDIAN RESTAURANT & LOUNGE

f you´ve been finding it difficult to locate a good curry house in Marbella, you are not alone! However, you will also be pleased to hear we have found this gem of a restaurant for you just 5 minutes from Marbella in Estepona at the El Pilar complex, located on the A7, opposite the Senator Banus Hotel. Our restaurant reviewers, who are huge curry aficionados, have tried and tested over 55 Indian restaurants on the Costa del Sol, and this one came up trumps. Aroma is a beautiful, whitewalled, miniature Taj Mahal of a restaurant. Spotless, elegant and a relaxed dining space. With easy outside parking, set aback from the main road, you will always be greeted with a smile. The charming

86 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

head of house at Aroma, Harry, recommended we go for the King Prawn Puree to start, which was divine. Our reviewers then went for the Crispy Fried Prawns and Bhaji to accompany – both were fantastic. Elsewhere on the diverse menu are all the traditional Indian dishes you´d expect to find including Ladies Fingers, Tandori Mixed Grill, Biryanis and Samosas. The main course selection was also fantastic taking over 5 pages of the vast Aroma Restaurant menu. The Chicken Tikka Massala, Chicken Korma and Lamb Madras were cooked to perfection. Unlike so may Indian´s on the coast, we had plentiful, large chunks of tender meat and sauce that was not fluorescent (praise the lord!) The rice was delicious,

Sag Aloo good, although you can opt for without onions, as one of our reviewers found it a little onion heavy. Aroma also has the added bonus of being a family friendly restaurant. They have a dedicated play area at the back of the restaurant so children can play with while you dine in peace. Great idea. Aroma also hold regular live music nights. It is probably best to ring first on a weekend to see if you are in luck of attending one. If you prefer a quieter dining experience then these nights may not be for you. There is also a huge chill out area located at the back of the restaurant if you want to come here for wifi, sports matches, a game of pool or a more relaxed meal with friends.

right, colourful and airy modern offices with beanbag chill out zones, ping-pong table, fridges full of soft drinks & icecream, roof top Zen Zone & Munchery with board games, giant Jenga and a football table with views of the sea, Gibraltar, Africa and the mountains… at the Mavrix Technologies offices in central Marbella why would any employee want to go home after work? Sarah Halpenny Conroy, Office & Employee Relations Manager tells Marbella Rocks Magazine why creating these offices and areas were fun, challenging and worth every second: Having Ping-Pong tournaments, playing PlayStation, Giant Jenga, Chess, Scrabble & Connect 4, having yoga on the roof and Friday International beers and pizza are not the first activities you think of when imagining a typical day at work but at Mavrix Technologies we

have adapted our work environment to produce great work and very happy employees. It definitely works for Google, now it´s Mavrix in Marbella´s turn! We are a creative marketing & technology company and when we first came to Marbella, we wanted to find a great location and a modern office, so taking a entire 5th floor. Soriano was perfect for us. We’ve since expanded with a new office on floor 4 and part of floor 6 (roof terrace). We were presented with white walls and brown wooden floors – a blank canvas basically! The roof to floor windows are of course a bonus, bouncing light right around the offices and with the views of the beautiful Sierra Blanca Mountain range and hustle and bustle below of the main street, makes this a very special office location. When we first started I knew the vibe of the company was going to be a vibrant and colourful one with a free and innovative spark, so I wanted to bring

that to the design of the offices, meeting areas and roof terrace and doing this interior design project over the last 15 months has been amazing especially when opening new sections and seeing the look on the guys faces. As a start-up company my budgets haven’t been massive, but it was important that I made them stretch so trips to IKEA, Leroy Merlin, online shopping on Westwing & Etsy and using the reliable & quality skills of local companies, like Grassify and Luncal, helped create what today is a functional and inspirational space for our 30+ employees who

are from all over Europe. I ran with themes based around forestry, grass, sky, and the beach; using mostly all white furniture, from adjustable desks to sofas and seating, then adding colorful textiles and random splashes of colour here and there, from the artwork that represents each employees home country to the cushions, rugs and beanbags. Our employees at Mavrix work hard, not only because this is their work ethic but also because having a fun, colourful and flexible office environment works! Maintaining and creating more inspirational areas will be an on-going project for me in order to keep morale at an all time high for Mavrix but I have to say I love my job, I get to be creative and make employees happy. I could write about the cost of living up to the ideal of beauty; the comparisons we make with ourselves in the presence of this ideal: being too fat, too thin, too short, too tall, too pale, too dark, too grey, too mousey, or just too old. The ugly truth of living up to an ideal, especially when that ideal is youth, is that it cannot be achieved easily by most, and this is exactly what the beauty industry thrives on: the impossible! Meanwhile, behind the facade of beauty, an ugly showcase is often concealed: poor self-esteem, eating disorders, nerve damage and scars from invasive beauty treatments, osteoporosis, organ failure, and sometimes death from anorexia, or anxiety and suffering derived from the harsh and dark thoughts of negative self-judgement with which we bully ourselves when we believe we do not live up to the ideal of the moment. There is nothing beautiful about the true picture of our manufactured beauty. But we know this, and yet still we pursue it, so writing about it has little impact. And so I will write about something that is has had an impact on me: true beauty. True beauty shines from a loving being; one who speaks with care and kindness to others, while holding the same silent truth within the secrets of their own mind; the unseen beauty of acceptance of self, others, and life. When I first encountered acceptance, I thought I had to get myself and my life to an acceptable place in order to accept; I was seriously missing the point! Acceptance is now, with who we are now, with what is now; it is surrendering to the fight and saying ‘it’s okay, I accept this, and I accept myself’. From a state of acceptance, a new peace is born, and it shines a light of serenity that we begin experience. With our acceptance, we give ourselves permission to be more of who we are, to express what is within and allow this to emerge from the confines of the shadows that imprisoned us in a state of ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts, and within the confines of fear and judgement, to empower our liberation. This love builds our self-esteem, from which a person is able to strive for their most cherished values, and precious dreams, because now they matter more than the illusions in life. This breeds an inner sense of meaning and purpose. Now, with an enriched and more beautiful vista, and with seeds of acceptance being nurtured, peace, freedom and happiness are yours to grow.

PSYCHOLOGY

To the person who chooses to pursue true beauty there are many challenges. The first and perhaps the most challenging of all is to break free of the old ideal and to banish the shadows. This will take courage and strength. Thankfully, these qualities grow in the presence of love; when we choose to accept what is and go in the direction of happiness. Ask yourself, ‘What matters to me now, truly, deeply, within?’ Then choose it. The ugly face of an ideal may haunt you, but if you say ‘no’ to the illusion and instead say ‘yes’ to you, your true beauty will shine until the shadows have no power, because you choose to love yourself more. This is true beauty and it doesn’t cost you any money and it doesn’t cost you your life. True beauty is free, it is a choice, and you are free to make it in any moment and as often as you wish.

CHOOSING BEAUTY

Writing the content was the easy part of the creative

process for this months column. However, when we were considering what image to put with it, it was actually sad to once again realise that so much natural beauty; so much of what makes a real person, is not demonstrated, as we focus on the illusionary façade. Perhaps the difficulty is that beauty is not confined to a manufactured image that is so easy to source from millions of digital, photoshopped resources. Beauty is not confined, it´s expansive: beauty is nature; it is birth and death, it is a connection between two souls in love, it is happiness, joy, a bright and positive mind, and it is a moment, this moment, when we come into it, as we are, feeling what we feel, and accepting who we are and what is. True beauty is seen in the wonders of life, it can everywhere and nowhere; it is perception, a choice, a way of seeing ourselves, and a way of being. Beauty cannot be confined to an image, it is subjective, which is the beauty of true beauty; it cannot be manipulated into a common doctored image, neither can we.

HOW YOU CAN BOOST YOUR BUSINESS

WORDS BY DEREK BARBER, FOUNDER J-BIZ LOUNGE

G

et back to the roots with networking! It’s as simple as that. The truth is we really only do business with people we like and trust, and never has face.to-face business networking been as important as nowadays. We live in an economical global recession that has affected everyone. If there is anyone out there that hasn’t been affected, please stand up and let us know your secret. Now, we can add another element to this that affects businesses, we also have an automatic, fast technological world at our fingertips where the consumer, or client is

100 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

constantly bombarded with products and advertising, emails and 24/7 social media madness on a daily basis. This leaves them totally oversaturated yet without the so crucial personal trusting bond needed between services or products offered. Let’s face it - networking is the most powerful and cost-effective way to grow your business after all! Currently, world-renowned experts are constantly advising serious entrepreneurs to free up between two to six precious hours per week for networking. That leads us to the well-known saying of “it’s

who you know”. Yet, in reality you really should be thinking more on the lines of “who actually knows you?” In a nutshell, the only way forward at present is to get dressed up, put on a brave smile and show up to experience the incredible power that networking can do for you and your business. It’s time to get out of your comfort zone, to mix and mingle with likeminded entrepreneurs. You will actually find that the more events you attend, the more comfortable, and the better you will become at making high-impact relationships. You might even find that you enjoy yourself. Practice your elevator

CAREERS pitch; think about what makes you “you” and your services or products so special. This is a critical element in the introduction process. You should be able to sum up what you do and your business in a ‘tweet’. You won’t waste valuable time trying to convey a concept and also you will build confidence in the fact that you know and understand your business so well that you can sum it up succinctly. WHEN IT IS YOUR TURN TO SAY SOMETHING, MAKE IT COUNT Take note, networking is not just about selling; it’s rather more akin to the art of listening, giving and adding value towards other guests and learning to become a connector. My advice to you would be, ”Be true to yourself, there’s no need to over-act, just be natural; after all we are all in the same boat and attending networking events for the same reason!” A further ripple effect you will automatically find is that you will become

inspired and motivated by feeding off the energy created naturally by like-minded thinkers. You will also meet healthy competitors and quickly learn new things as well as keeping up with new trends, and before you know it you will have become a networking ninja. I attend every possible networking event. You can expect to make a minimum of two to five good contacts. If all you are after is hunting for business cards and then just hurrying back to your TV series you will have missed the boat! Remember it is called networking, not netsit, or net-eat. Be active and take every guest seriously, don’t misjudge any of them; as you never know who is in his network. The biggest mistake I keep seeing again and again is the lack of effort made in carrying out follow-ups with the people they’ve mingled with during the evening; so don’t destroy the good first impression you make. Remember you need to get back in touch with them within the next 48 hours,

ideally, with a good oldfashioned follow-up phone call. I hope to bump into you one day at a J-Biz Lounge event where you will find a great vibe, great people; all designed to help your business grow in a relaxed ambience, assuring your best networking results. All our events are spiced with special guest speakers, exhibitors, live entertainment, a welcome drink, complimentary snacks, some surprises and more. Feel free to contact us for useful networking tips, and upcoming networking opportunities in your region. Let me end with a quote by Zig Ziglar: “If people like you they listen, if they trust you they do business with you.”

THE OYSTERCATCHER For Derek Barber, when creating his unique concept of business networking in South Africa, and as the avid fisherman he is, the only way he could explain his theory and method was to compare it to the complicated and intricate way of catching oysters. We started catching metaphorical oysters in 2009, with the aim of finding precious pearls. The new venture wasn’t easy as any entrepreneur knows, but we knew they were out there and we were committed to the search. Oysters are less than attractive; in fact you could say that they are remarkably ugly. Some are small and don’t seem to fit the profile when you’re looking for a precious

pearl, but we didn’t give up and so we took a chance and just opened every single one of them. As it is known; oysters are well protected with a hard, rough exterior shell and extremely difficult to open, so it took several cuts and bruises before working out which would be the best way to open them, whilst still maintaining the integrity of the pearl inside. So it was with our search for the pearls of our business. In oyster catching and in business you can trip on the rocky terrain where the oysters are found, and even when you find them and prepare them, the wrong one might be rotten and detrimentally affect the health of your company. But with determination and

belief you can overcome this and continue searching for the proverbial pearl. Our goal is to create the largest string of uniquely gifted pearls that the world has to offer. We will expand our team; teach others to succeed and to soon make their own necklaces that they can wear and show with pride. We will connect new oystercatchers with the best pearl farmers: be it from whichever field, jewelry designers, sales people, business consultants, marketing experts, logistic & trading companies. We will inspire and assist you into becoming the expert in your industry or to becoming the black pearl of your industry - that which is most desired above all.

N

ovikov retains its crown as one of the ‘it’ restaurants in London. None other than Bradley Cooper was spotted dining at this exquisite hotspot, along with his new high-flying flame, Irina Shayk. The Sports Illustrated model and the A-list hottie have carved a strong place for themselves on the Hollywood circuit. This power couple first ignited their romance at the Met Gala after-party. However, it seems their fling is somewhat in the air with Irina jetting out of London leaving her new beau behind. Bradley Cooper might have his hands full, however, as he is about to star in the hotly anticipated Elephant Man on the West End.

what’s trending

It truly is the end of an era. David Letterman has handed in his resignation as a late night chat show host. The talented host has been in the business for over 30 years, so it was only fitting that a crowd of famous stars bid farewell to the longstanding comedian. Tina Fey kicked off the gaggle of farewells in style with probably the most surprising send-off thus far. The comedienne did not disappoint with her hilarious and scantily clad performance. She

122 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 11

was initially wearing a fitted blue dress, before she stripped off and gave the audience and Letterman a right eyeful. “I’m never going to wear a fancy dress on a talk show again,” she said. “It’s very hard work, I don’t know if you’re aware of the contraptions, under here it’s almost medical. And I’m terrible in heels.” To the audience and Letterman’s surprise, Fey then started to undo the straps of her dress. “I dress up like this out of respect for you. What, am I going to put on a dress for Jimmy [Fallon]? That’s creepy. He’s like my brother. What, I’m going to wear special underwear for James Corden? Because this is my last time wearing a fancy dress on a talk show and conforming to gender norms out of respect for you. My gift to you is I want to give you the dress.” She then stripped down on live TV to show off her spanx shorts and nude bra with a black leotard which read, “Bye Dave” on the stomach and “#LastDressEver” on the butt. Like I said, she did not disappoint! Adam Sandler too had a unique way of bidding farewell to Letterman, though not quite as shocking. Cementing his funny guy status, Sandler decided that song was his best port of call. Accompanied by only his guitar, the 48-year-old star sang, ‘There simply is no better man than good old David Letterman / And no one gets Julia Roberts’ face redder than a flirty David Letterman / He’s leaving after 30 years, and you know he will be missed / If you like gap-toothed men in double-breasted suits, he’s number one on your top ten list.’ David Letterman’s last show aired

on May 30th ending his 22-year tenure on the show. Another huge show coming to a close was American Idol. A lavish event was held in honour of the established programme. As usual, Jennifer Lopez dazzled the crowd with her racy, bejewelled choice of attire. She performed Rihanna’s iconic track, Diamonds, accompanied by her co-judges, Keith Urban and Henry Connick. J-Lo wasn’t the only diva stealing the show though. Fall Out Boy performed Centuries along with finalists Clark Beckham and Nick Fradiani. The ever-so-smooth Jamie Foxx was also on hand to charm the audience along with contestant Rayvon Owen. Former judge Stephen Tyler wowed the audience with his rendition of Love is Your Name, alongside contestant Jax. It was an evening filled with energetic and soulful performances, a terrific way to send off the legendary show.

FASHION

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious dates on the Hollywood calendar, so of course the fashion stakes had to be set high. Talented actresses Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyong and Natalie Portman channelled traditional Hollywood glamour in their choice of attire and hairstyle. Lupita’s light green dress was as stunning as it was dramatic. Miller opted for a classic navy blue oneshouldered gown whilst Portman went for a bold scarlet dress, which suited the event perfectly. The red carpet was also graced by a host of gorgeous models including Karlie Kloss, Bar Refaeli and Doutzen Kroes, to name a few. The three stunning blondes complemented each other beautifully in their white cut-out gowns.

After feeling like you’ve been spinning your wheels or that your plans have been put on hold, this month offers you green lights and permission to shift those ambitions into high gear again. You’re not about to sit on the sidelines any longer when it comes to what you want and are off in hot pursuit of it (or at least letting that romantic prospect know their interest is returned in no uncertain terms). Right now, ambiguity is not your thing and you’re up for straight talk and stating your intentions - and you expect others to do the same. Good news could be on its way with regards to love or your bank account (or even both) but it’s time to do things differently than you have done in the past if success if your goal. Do not be your old self. It’s time for reinvention on a grand scale.

Whatever it is you are looking for, or want to achieve, you won’t find it - or take that first step towards it - by staying home. Tell others what it is, or who it is, you’re seeking. Set the wheels in motion this month Leo, the universe responds in kind and goals or the means to attain them just get pulled into your powerful gravitational field of attraction. Are you simply irresistible? A powerful cosmic force? Yes to all of that. But at the end of the day you know you could be the determining factor when it comes to star-struck wishes and dreams. However, if you feel a romantic connection has become imbalanced or worse, you’re being lied to or used on some level, this is one you may choose to sever. Love is either very, very good or just not up to your standards. This is one area where you know you should never compromise.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

You could be facing decisions around a relationship or key personal connection - especially if you have been putting this off. Circumstances may force you into a position where you realise that it’s either time to get serious or else throw in the towel. You’re looking to the long term this month, and this extends to who you want in your life and also what you need to ensure your security - both on an emotional and financial level. You’re realising it’s high time you put your needs first. A new job or source of income could be opening up for some of you and this could well prove to be the bedrock on which you build your future. Either someone feels the same way - or not and shared values could well be the determining factor as to whether a relationship has long-term potential or not now.

As your birthday approaches something is exposed. This is on a ‘need to know’ basis and believe me - you do need to know even if the reality shatters some illusions you’ve been harbouring. Your reaction may be out-of-character and will take the other party by surprise - especially if they have taken you for granted, but on this occasion touchy-feely you gets replaced. As a work project or issue enters a key stage you could be set to reap the financial benefits. You’ve energy to spare when it comes to pursuing those career and financial goals now so direct it wisely. But it’s not just your bank account that could be glowing. Even if someone’s behaviour has you questioning their (and your) judgement, an alternative appears that restores your faith in love. Illusions may be shattered this month but if so, they’ll be replaced by the real thing.

That blast from the past may be tempting but are you creating a future or is history repeating itself? Take a step back and ask yourself have they really changed or are they the relationship equivalent of a bad software upgrade - repackaged but still full of bugs and still extremely un-user friendly when it all boils down to it? The best use of your energy right now is concentrating on your career and long-term ambitions. You can make considerable inroads here and what is more, provided you don’t butt heads with superiors or insist it’s ‘your way or the highway’ you’ll have others on side and be set to impress with your go-getting attitude. In fact, you’re in a position to sweep the competition away when it comes to interviews or presentations. Be seen as someone who knows what they want and what they are talking about. It’s time for that leader to emerge.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

You may suddenly realise that the path you’re on may not offer the rewards you hoped for Libra, and if that’s the case then this month could offer you the opportunity to correct that if needed. It’s time to strike out and above all, believe in yourself and act boldly - even if you are shaking in your shoes. If you act like you have the confidence, nobody else will know you’re in ‘fake it till you make it’ mode. Tap into that acting talent and pretend you’re auditioning for a role in George Clooney’s latest film and you have to be as convincing as you can to land the role. Your performance will then be nothing short of Oscar winning. You’re not fooling yourself or anyone else just tapping into your innate talent although there are others who may just write this off to a fluke or ‘lucky’ break. Pay no attention. This is the role you were born to play.

New beginnings in relationships are what you have been waiting for. Either to re-ignite the passion with a current amor or else find what’s been missing from your life with a new one. This month promises just that or at the very least the certainty whether you’re with the right person or not. If you meet someone new, passion ignites like wildfire. Wild hearts need to run free or find a similar free spirit to run with. Have you been feeling that a lover has locked the door and thrown away the key? Feeling caged on any level is just not your style. You’re seeking that total soul experience someone who sets you free and also has something to teach you. One way or another you’ll confront the inescapable fact that while opposites may attract, for you, love means finding your own kind. Either you’ll find them or you’ll meet one another halfway now.

That impossible dream or that lasting love (are they one and the same for you, Aquarius?) could be tantalisingly within your grasp this month. If you’ve lurked in an ivory tower of late waiting for rescue you’ll see that it’s up to you to climb down out of it and reconnect to the world at large. Who or what you want is out there waiting for you but you may have to go find it as opposed to expecting it to come to you. The upside of all this is that no matter what, you’ll have more fun than you ever dreamed possible doing it and end up wondering what on earth was preventing you from acting before. Everyone just appears so receptive to what you have to offer and that includes you personally. This is no time to sell yourself short. Lasting love or that dream job are reserved for those who know deep down that ‘luck’ happens to those who make the effort.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

How you’ve handled your money of late could either result in a major bonus or else a deficit now. This is your financial heritage so if you are unhappy and in the red now is the time to implement a new regime when it comes to your cash. There’s little point in resenting or rebelling against this as you’ll only dig yourself in deeper. Above all, understand you have the resources to get whatever it is you want - and that includes having more resources of the financial kind at your disposal. A new job, promotion or the opportunity to shine has a role to play here. Serious success demands you pay serious attention. When it comes to romance, a wake-up call may also be in order. It may be you’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places or else that lover who you thought was so different to the rest is revealed to be a wolf wearing a threadbare sheep outfit. Learn from all this if hitting that ‘replay’ button is now just so tired.

Your determination to push through changes on the work front could pay off in spades now but ensure you are not rushing or neglecting to check the details - such as that glaring typo in that job application or project, for example. You should have no problem getting your ideas across, nor in creating a favourable impression with those you meet with - prospective clients or employers alike. When it comes to romance or your partner, however, things may grate as opposed to being great. Those annoying habits that you’d usually dismiss as mere quirks, now become something they are doing deliberately to annoy you. If you don’t want love to become a battlefield then find some activity you can channel all that energy into instead. If you’re single you may feel the attraction but realise this person annoys the hell out of you at the same time. It’s two sides of the same coin now.

Time to get your house in order - literally and figuratively. Tend to your every day responsibilities and if changes need to be made on the home front or to living arrangements, no matter who you think they may upset, know that they are overdue and that continued procrastination serves no one. You may face opposition to changing the status quo including emotional scenes or manipulation, but stand firm. Status quo is just another term for stagnation. That’s not something you can afford now as new opportunities begin to beckon that are designed to release you from what has become mundane. If you’ve been wondering where the party is happening and why everyone else but you has been invited, then this month brings not just the invitation to join in but an access all areas pass. Love or just an opportunity to feel noticed and special again are the payoffs. Don’t continue to let life pass you by simply by refusing to shake things up.

We came up with the concept 3 years ago through our knowledge of the market, my years of experience DJ’ing in Marbella and seeing a huge gap that was missing in the compilation market. WHY DO YOU THINK MARBELLA HAS BECOME THE PLACE TO PARTY? It has been that way for many years but the Marbella Sessions albums and TV has highlighted it’s unique party vibe in recent years.
