RECIPE

If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

TAGLIATELLE ALLA BOLOGNESE Usually Italian recipes are kept secret and passed down through the generations. However, celebrity TV chef Gino D´Acampo has revealed his grandfather´s tastiest Bolognese recipe so you can create authentic Italian cuisine in the comfort of your own home.

INGREDIENTS (serves 6) ● 2 tablespoons olive oil ● 1 onion, very finely diced ● 2 celery sticks, very finely diced ● 1 large carrot, very finely diced ● 500g minced pork ● 500g minced beef ● 50ml red wine ● 50ml milk ● 4 tablespoons tomato purée ● 300ml passata ● 400ml chicken or vegetable stock ● 500g fresh tagliatelle ● Parmesan shavings, to serve (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat half the oil in a large sauté pan and fry the onion, celery and carrot for 5 minutes until soft and starting to colour.

24 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

2. While the vegetables are cooking, put all the meat in a large bowl, pour over the remaining olive oil and crumble the meat between your fingertips. Add the meat to the pan and fry until brown – around 5 minutes. 3. Deglaze the pan with the red wine and allow to simmer for a couple of minutes, then add the milk. Simmer for 2 minutes before stirring in the tomato purée, passata and stock. Simmer gently for 3 hours until reduced and thickened. Once cooked, remove from the hob, season with salt and pepper then cover with a lid and leave for 20 minutes – you do not want the sauce to be boiling hot when you serve it. 4. When ready to serve, bring a large pan of water to the boil and season generously with salt. Add the pasta to the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes or until just cooked. 5. Drain the pasta, then return to the pan with the sauce and toss to combine. Serve in bowls with a few Parmesan shavings scattered over, if you like. Enjoy!

WINE MATCH A full bodied and robust red wine like the Montepulciano D’Abruzzo ‘Tralcetto’ Zaccagnini would really compliment a Bolognese based dish like this. The freshness from the red fruits of the Montepulciano as well as its optimum acidity, refined symphony of spices supported by a resolute tannin that makes it the perfect companion. Baci di Sangiovese, with intense aromas of cherries, violets and berries with a hint of liquorice, is another great wine choice for this meaty, rich bolognese sauce. Although this Tuscan variety has high tannins and acidity, after taking a swig of it with a tomatobased dish, it will allow you to really savour the earthy and juicy, berry goodness.

SELMA

MUMFORD & SONS Wilder Side

Selma is a chronicle of Martin Luther King´s epic campaign to secure equal rights by marching from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. After seeking the help of U.S. President Lyndon Johnson and being refused, King and civil rights leaders led marches to the Capitol building in Montgomery. The first march, known as ‘Bloody Sunday’, took marchers into the brutal hands of the police. Despite the danger, marchers returned to the bridge two days later in peaceful response. In the weeks that followed, the marchers reached Montgomery where King gave his infamous “How Long, Not Long” speech that provoked Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a major step in the quest for race equality. To date, not many films have focused on Luther King´s plight but this one is well worth watching as it focuses in on such a short space of his career that his cause and political obstacles are explored fully. Interstellar actor David Oyelow plays King with extreme passion and his gripping portrayal of the civil rights leader makes this film even more intense. Also featuring stellar supporting actor performances from Reservoir Dogs Tim Roth and Oprah Winfrey. ROCKS RATING:

British folk band Mumford & Sons have gone all electric on us with their latest studio album, Wilder Side, released on May 4th. The Grammy and Brit Award winning group have just released this electric, more contemporary album after pairing with former Arctic Monkey´s producer James Ford. The album has divided Mumford fans with some praising the group for going more upbeat and modern, while others are disappointed the folk rock band are not sticking to their folk roots. However, one person who is firmly not sitting on the fence is Mumford Banjo player, Winston Marshall. In a recent interview with New York Magazine when asked whether his band had “killed” the banjo, Marshall replied “Killed is an understatement. We murdered it. I f***ing hate the banjo!” So electric guitars now replace the twingy-twangy banjo sound. The first track to be released, Believe, is a love story - which is both hard-hitting and acoustically pleasing. Mumford & Sons first stormed the charts back in 2007 and this hot new album is a sign of their evolvement over the past eight years. Well worth a listen.

ROCKS RATING:

A fantastic, psychological thriller that tells the story of two women´s battles against terrifyingly abusive relationships. The first woman, Clarissa is encountering problems with her work colleague Rafe who will not leave her alone. She thankfully gets away from him when she is called for jury service. But for how long? The second woman is actually a witness on the case Clarissa has being assigned to judge. As the case unfolds Clarissa notices terrifying parallels between this woman´s situation and her own life. Realising she bears the burden of truth, it is up to Clarissa to solve the macabre tale that Rafe has spun around them and discovers the ending that he envisions is something way more sinister than she could have ever imagined. This debut novel from Claire Kendall is a hard-hitting page turner that you won’t be able to put down. The Book of You was voted book of the year by many acclaimed critics in 2014 and has topped many lists as one of the best books to read this summer. The Book of You author Claire Kendal definitely captivates her readers and her persistence to discuss cultural and stereotypical gender roles is apparent. Ultimately though, her story celebrates women as being binary creatures being both victims and survivors. Deep, dark, disturbing but definitely a book that you won´t be able to book down. BACK AND BIGGER THAN EVER... HISTORY OF HOUSE AT PLAZA BEACH AND AQWA MIST

M

arbella Rocks talks exclusively to Jon Besant, owner and resident DJ at History of House, on why they´re coming back to Marbella this year, bigger and better than before.

How did you get into DJ’ing and the nightclub industry? The first time I heard my best friend mix two tunes together I was hooked. I saved enough money from my paper round and pocket money to get my first set

26 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

of technics when I was just 15.

When did you set up History of House? The event came off the back of me doing a radio show celebrating the history of Manchester House music in the 1980s and I put together a 6500 sell-out party using 25 years of Manchester’s most known DJs.

What is the History of House ethos? It’s all about the music! We don’t need to spend silly money on

NEWS

artists and like to mix the DJs with live PAs, and with it creating a non-stop party of anthems everyone knows.

What´s been your most impressive or biggest gig to date? I would say the first one! 6500 will be pretty hard to beat but the first ones we did at Plaza Beach and Aqwa Mist last summer were pretty special too.

Jackmaster Funk and this one is HUGE... Todd Terry!!!!

arrived last year I felt welcome and part of a very special bond.

Any other plans whilst your here in Marbella? Sleep!

How does Marbella compare to Dubai where you also do alternate seasons?

Why is yours the party to go to?

Dubai is very similar to Marbella in the way that people really make an effort and ooze class.

Because we give the customer something different to all the other venues in the port. It really is all about the party!

Any big plans/surprises this summer?

Last summer you held inaugural events at Plaza. Now you´ve added Aqwa Mist to your regular line up. How did this come about?

What´s everyone wearing?

I think the line-ups in themselves are adding a surprise element to the port this year.

Shorts and hopefully skimpy bikinis!

Favourite tune this summer?

We have always had Aqwa Mist as our official History of House after-party but this year we are going to be doing nearly every Friday with a current line-up of the best house artists.

I’m not sure about everyone else but if you happen to see me behind the DJ booth bring me a vodka, lime and soda!

What´s everyone drinking?

Too many to think of just one!

Favourite track of all time? The Last Rhythm Last Rhythm vocal mix... If you’ve never heard it, You Tube it and you’ll see why.

How do you go about getting tickets?

During the 10 months since they have opened, there has been many different events held in Freudenhaus and Marbella is loving its new chic cocktail venue. Weekends are always packed with people who love to spend their night with friends, enjoying exquisite cocktails and the best DJ’s Marbella and Spain has to offer. So far Freudenhaus has had many famous names from the Spanish bartending industry and also from Estonia (one of the most famous cocktail bars in Tallinn) One of the owners, Rauni Tillisoo, said: “We will continue to give the limelight for the best bartenders in Spain and Europe. Then the heat goes up at the weekend with DJ´s every Friday and Saturday night. Freudenhaus are also open on Sundays in Summer for “Soft Landing Sundays” – the perfect time to have a taste of fruity virgin shakes and refreshing mixes after a day at the beach. “We have done many videos of our events, so you can have a better understanding of what we are all about. If you haven’t visited us yet and want to

know what all the fuss is about, you can find all our videos on YouTube under the name Freudenhaus Marbella or on our Facebook page,” Rauni adds. SAVE THE DATE: In the third weekend of May, José Joaquín Cortés Sommelier “Nariz de Oro” de España otherwise known as The Spanish Golden Nose will come to Freudenhaus for cigars and wine pairing. Jose was world runnerup at Habanosommelier Contest in Havana 2010 and is a coffee expert here in Spain. REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process.

STEP 1

OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st

registration.

STEP 2

CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car.

STEP 3

RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds).

STEP 4

OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly

display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40¤ for petrol-engine cars and 56¤ for diesel-engine cars.

STEP 5

OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band.

YOU CAN CARRY OUT ALL THESE PROCEDURES YOURSELF OR YOU CAN SEEK THE ASSISTANCE OF AN ACCOUNTANT TO DO THIS FOR YOU. WE HOPE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS ARTICLE IS OF INTEREST. The GUETTA

BLASTER

GUETTA´S COMING BACK. YES, IT´S TRUE AND YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. THE WORLD´S GREATEST DJ/PRODUCER WILL BE TOUCHING DOWN ON SPANISH SOIL AND PLAYING ANOTHER SELL-OUT GIG TO THE MARBELLA MASSES ON AUGUST 1ST.

T

he French superstar DJ will be performing at the Municipal Stadium in San Pedro de Alcantara. Last year all 15,000 tickets were sold out for the event so be sure to get in there early, via ticket selling site Ticketball, to not miss out on this HUGE event. According to organisers, this year´s show is set to be even bigger with other artists being introduced to the line-up. Names of other supporting acts were yet to be announced as Marbella Rocks went to press. It can be safely said that everyone in the world know´s Guetta´s music. His addictive songs belch from every car radio, even mums not usually akin to being house music fans, find themselves tapping in time with his beats and howling out loudly to. However it´s safe to say that David Guetta’s not a popstar by traditional definition. He doesn’t sing. He doesn’t strum a guitar. He doesn’t thrash a keyboard. So what exactly does he do in the domain of music? David Guetta is a DJ and music producer. He’s the one that comes up with the killer beats that creates the hit songs. He’s the one that music artists clamour to collaborate with, in the quest for that major hit. Call him the guru of electronic dance music, as he’s the one credited with getting dance tunes well wedged into the domain of pop and mainstream music. Guetta’s trendsetting 2009 album ‘One Love’

was one of the first electronic dance music albums to make it huge on pop radio; this was the break that got electronic dance music to the ears of a wider global audience and was what saw Guetta becoming one of the most in-demand DJs in the world. David Guetta has been officially named as ‘Number One DJ in the World’ (DJ Magazine, 2011), has over 25 million Facebook fans, more than two million Twitter followers, and over half a billion

it is mixed down, the kick, and the beats, this is all important, but it is the melody that makes records stand out.” So how did it all begin for Guetta? David Guetta’s fame grew from humble roots as a Parisian DJ at the age of 17. Like most parents, his weren’t happy about their son following a career in music. But for very different reasons. “My parents were extreme left so everything was against the system. I was walking barefoot in the streets of Paris when I was eight. When I started to DJ they hated it, because for them, nightclubs and all of this life, was terrible and fake,” says Guetta. But he loved it and knew that was where he wanted to be. So Guetta’s career in music began in the nightclubs of Paris. At the ‘Broad Club’ to be precise. He says that it was there he first played popular songs, but soon discovered house music when he heard a Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk track on French radio in 1987. The next year, he began hosting his own club nights and in 1990, he released his first single, ‘Nation Rap’, a hip-hop collaboration with French rapper Sidney Duteil. In the mid 1990s Guetta played in other clubs including ‘Le Centrale’, the ‘Rex’, ‘Le Boy’, and ‘Folies Pigalle’. Guetta’s second single released in 1994, a collaboration with American house vocalist Robert Owens called ‘Up & Away’, was a minor club hit. In 1994, Guetta became the manager of ‘Le Palace’ nightclub and he

views on YouTube. He sells millions of records as well as DJ´ing in stadiums packed with tens of thousands of people. Guetta speaks of how he has spent his life searching for that perfect dance beat. His dedication to the acoustic and his talent for arousing emotions in music listeners has made him one of the most indemand producers on this planet. His collaborations with hip-hop’s biggest stars have resulted in some killer dance tracks and some superb chart-topping songs. For 47-yearold Guetta, successful songs all rely on the melody. “The main idea of my music is to make people dance and to make them emotional at the same time,” he says. “Of course, because it’s club music, the way

continued throwing parties there and in other clubs, such as the legendary ‘Scream’ parties in ‘Les Bains Douches’. During his Paris DJ´ing days, Guetta tied the knot with nightclub manager and business partner Cathy Lobé. They have two children: son Tim Elvis Eric, who’s now 11, and daughter Angie, who turned eight last September. Last year, after 22 years of marriage, the Guettas called it a day, filing for divorce in March. Rumour has it that they are still bumping heads over the division of an estimated 30 million euro fortune. There were more singles and three albums to follow for Guetta, including the formation of Gum Productions in 2001 and the release of his first album, ‘Just a Little More Love’. Later, he released ‘Guetta Blaster’ (2004) and ‘Pop Life’ (2007). But it was Guetta’s fourth studio album, ‘One Love’, that did it for him. The album was a ‘coup de maître’ in the kingdom of music, selling over

34 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

3 million copies globally. It gave rise to a total of six worldwide hit singles throughout 2009 and 2010, most notably ‘When Love Takes Over’, featuring American recording artist Kelly Rowland, ‘Sexy Bitch’ with Senegalese-American singer Akon, ‘Who’s That Chick?’ featuring Rihanna and ‘One Love’ featuring British R&B artist, Estelle. Not only that, but the album received a nomination for the 52nd Grammy Awards in the category ‘Best Electronic/Dance Album’. The album’s lead single, ‘When Love Takes Over’ was nominated in the categories ‘Best Dance Recording’ and ‘Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical’, winning the latter. His sixth studio album, ‘Listen’, was released worldwide in November last year, with Guetta co-writing the title track ‘Listen’ with American musician and songwriter, Austin Bis. However, regardless of his rise to fame as a music producer and songwriter, Guetta is quick to confirm that he is still a DJ at heart. “Everything I make as a producer, I visualise it as a DJ first. And all those beats, I test them as a DJ,” he explains. “It’s actually quite incredible that I’m not really doing anything that different to what I was doing when I was 17,” he says. “I started my career playing records at a small club in Paris, before the emergence of house music. Back then, I played a mixture of new wave and funk, and in a way that is what I’m playing now.” Aside from long stints in the studio recording albums, 47-yearold Guetta still gets into the concert

groove with a hectic touring schedule, flitting to and from some of the finest venues in the world: he’s played at the lowest point on earth: Masada in the Judean Desert in Israel, and in summer hotspots such as the idyllic island of Ibiza and the whitewashed Greek island of Mykonos. He’s hosted glitzy gigs in Las Vegas and he’s headlined New York City’s Electric Zoo festival. And those are just a few. Set foot into a David Guetta concert and you’ll really experience what he’s all about. You’ll be seduced by his sound. You’ll feel the emotion emanating from a captivated audience. You’ll literally feel the beat, the rhythm and the bass. You’ll be hypnotised by the sets, the lights, the smoke, the spectacle. You’ll get just how he entertains and enthralls the tens of thousands of fans who sway and gyrate to his beats, to his personal music mixes. David Guetta, the go-getter is really going places. But for Guetta, it will always be about the music. As he explains, “I don’t do this for the money, I don’t do it for record sales, I don’t really care about that, I just want to make beats.” Check out David Guetta’s concert schedule for the year online. The ‘Guetta Blaster’ will be hosting concerts in Ibiza throughout the summer alongside his trip to Marbella on August 1st.

OCEAN CLUB Anyone who is anyone will be attending the Ocean Club this bank holiday. Their Sintillate Champagne sprays attract serious celebs and major partygoers. Spend all day sipping on their unbelievable cocktails (Strawberry Daiquiris to die for) and dancing to fantastic tunes. The only downfall of this VIP pool party is that the music isn’t quite loud enough when there are hundreds of people shouting and champagne spraying so dancing will be harder than you think. But then again with girls done up to the nines, and the majority of the men splashing more cash than pool water who would want to embarrass themselves dancing like their dad? This day is a must especially if you’re only here for the weekend so make sure to book tickets early as tables are a sell-out and tickets go quicker than TV ‘s in Tesco on Black Friday. From previous experience I loved my time at the Ocean but wish I had saved myself over the weekend. It’s true that 3 days of non-stop partying can definitely take its toll and I wasn’t prepared for this day as much as I’d like - especially when the day wasn’t just a party, but also a fashion show; with every girl trying to be skinnier, better looking and more glam than the next! It’s safe to say if you’re going to go to this one be sure to look your best - try getting your hair done, having great nails and a chic bikini to ensure you’re ready for this massive day out.

DATES: 3rd & 24th DRESS CODE: Glamorous. Girls in beautiful bikinis and boys in big brands. TYPES OF PEOPLE: Catch celebrities, TOWIE stars and footballers, but also expect the odd wanna-trader and Essex boy spending his life savings trying to out-do the boy next to him. TICKETS: General entrance ¤250 (incl. bottle of Dom Pérignon 0.75L)

SISU One of Marbella’s most banging pool parties. Full of fantastic, seriously stylish people. The dancers are out of this world and the atmosphere is like no other. The best thing about Sisu is that the tables come with Jacuzzis, so definitely look into getting one if there is a group of you. The place is always rammed and the drinks flowing. The first bank holiday (1st May) is the grand opening of Sisu and will showcase how Friday nights will be at this classy pool party venue so be sure to check it out so you know what you’re in for this summer. The second bank holiday (23rd) also sees the first LoveJuice all-dayer of the season so it is definitely the place to be in May. Music will be fantastic, especially with the likes of George Mensah on the decks. This is the place to let your hair down and dance like nobody is watching! I’d say that the Sisu party was definitely one of my favourite days over the weekend, everyone had a great time and there wasn’t a long face in sight. DJ Skyhigh from LoveJuice got the crowd going and Unique Parties and Ministry of Sound Marbella Sessions DJ Colin Francis got everyone dancing on the tables. I would go as far to say that bank holiday wouldn’t have been the same had I not attended this infamous party so make sure you’ve got your wedges and wallet ready and book your tickets asap. New to this year as well is the fantastic Pink Laurent Perrier Pool so get down there for their opening party where they’ve promised special events, surprises and more. DATES: 1st Opening Party and 23rd LoveJuice DRESS CODE: Fierce, fun and Fabulous. LoveJuice is definitely Essex meets Liverpool so don’t dress casual!! TYPE OF PEOPLE: Essex meets Scouse, we all know they love a good party so be ready to dance your socks off all day. TICKETS: Opening Party is free entry before 1pm and €20 after. Great music and unreal atmosphere you’re sure to have one too many at this intimate bar. The staff are fantastic and you will be sure to have a good night here. The Shisha Lounge is available so get there early for a relaxing drink before the night gets going. Its not only the abundance of celebrities that News Café has coming through its doors, which has earned them their glam status, its chilled out and fun ambience means you will always have a good night. Being on the frontline of Puerto Banus, News Café also has fantastic views of the port and is great for people watching. Our first night (along with most!) really began when we arrived in News Café, the music played loud, and the drinks were reasonable, considering you’re in Marbella. We definitely had one too many by the time we left but it was great to have a dance and chill out whilst drooling over the masses of ginormous yachts that sat yards in front of us. It definitely showed us how luxurious Marbella is and got us in the mood for the holiday! The only problem is that News Café is always busy so try not to get there too late to avoid queuing.

DATES: All weekend DRESS CODE: Sexy - Marbella isn’t a casual place so even if you’re going for a quiet one make sure to look your best - you never know who you’ll bump into. TYPE OF PEOPLE: VIPS - Many of Marbella’s finest are seen in News Café so it is definitely a must this bank holiday. TICKETS: Free! AQWA MIST Marbella superclub Aqwa Mist is sure to give you one of the best nights you’ll ever have in Marbella. With money being spent like it’s water and bottles popping all over the club this night won’t disappoint. The music is crazy, playing songs for all types of people so have your dancing shoes on. But be prepared, Aqwa doesn’t open until 2am most nights and doesn´t close until the early hours of the morning so loose track of time and you could end up rolling out as the suns coming up! We ended up in Aqwa most nights as the parties are so good and the place is always busy with a great vibe. The tables are also really reasonable when there is a group of you and the hosts are so lovely, we just couldn’t resist going back. However, because Aqwa opens so late, try not to burn the candle at both ends by doing day and night parties everyday. Tickets are already selling-out fast for May Bank Holiday and their nights will 100% be the talk of the town for months to come. With resident DJ Stacey James and guest DJ’s Nick Hussey and Jon Besant there for History Parties on the 2nd and Jason Derulo on the 23rd, the weekend is sure to go off with a bang. It is constantly full of people, regulars, locals and tourists alike (tourists probably because it gets a lot of coverage on the TV show The Only Way is Marbs.) The music is great for you house loving party people and is sure to keep you dancing till the early hours. Their CandyPants Dusk till Dawn parties planned for the May Bank Holiday weekends every Friday really go off…. full of great people (do not miss this.) Plus Tibu´s resident DJ Tango is a real crowd pleaser. I’d say the one downside to Tibu is that there is always a queue to get in so make sure you get there early if, like me, you’re not one to queue! My favourite was Ocean

Jack Simpson, 21, London What did you like best about your trip to Marbella? The girls… (haha) and the clubs are unreal, there isn’t another place in the world I would rather go on holiday. Where is your favourite place to party? We loved Plaza Beach, it is not as stuck up as

Club/Sintillate Champagne Spray, because it was such a good venue to host a party. I loved everybody’s style and thought all the girls (and guys) looked amazing. What is your favourite Marbella nightclub? Aqwa Mist, we had some really good nights in there! They just get it right with music, crowd and ambience. What do you like most

VIVA ESPANA THE NIGHT OF SAN JUAN

arbella is about as multicultural a destination as it gets. According to the latest research, three-quarters of the inhabitants of Marbella are made up of foreigners, with the highest percentage being Brits, then Germans, Italians then Russians. While this bustling tourism trade is no doubt good for the area, it´s important that we celebrate the rich culture, concerts and festivities Spain has to offer as well as attending our own nation’s specific events. To make your summer calendar easier to plan, Marbella Rocks has rounded up the best of the best Spanish events this summer to make sure you experience the true delights that the Costa del Sol has in store for us.

It is no surprise that Spaniards love parties and any kind of fun. Therefore, the arrival of summer is accompanied by a joyous celebration. The Night of San Juan is an annual festival which takes place during the shortest night of the year on June 23rd - and this you definitely shouldn’t miss. The Spanish culture is particularly rich and the Night of San Juan is a living proof of this variety. Every city and every picturesque village keeps miscellaneous traditions that are part and parcel of this fabulous evening. However, water and fire are the basic elements as it is believed that these counterparts create a mythical connection. Fire and burning of “júas” (rag dolls) symbolise the disappearance of bad and negative energy. People jump over a bonfire, burn something old and personal to chase away bad spirits or even cross-burning embers to purify their souls. The water element cannot be missed out - after all it is the best symbol of purification and renewal. It is believed that taking a swim in the sea during the San Juan Night will make your three wishes come true. San Juan is a fabulously great celebration on a beach that is roaring with bonfires, cheerful voices and tinkling glasses. As it could not be otherwise, Marbella comes to life to hold pompous parties on many beaches. El Cable and El Panillo are of special importance during this night as friends and families gather

PABLO ALBORÁN Pablo Alborán was born in Malaga in 1989 and he wrote his first song at the age of 12. His whole life is connected with music, however, he had to wait for his success in 2011 when he released his first album called simply Pablo Alborán. His song Solamente Tú ruled the Spanish charts for long six weeks, assuring everyone that Pablo is an exceptional talent with a great voice. Accompanied by his guitar, Pablo continued to write songs that overwhelmed not only Spain but also international radios mainly in Latin America. Hits such as Miedo, Pérdoname or El Beso have had millions of hits on YouTube. Pablo returns to his beloved Malaga on the 5th of June 2015 within his tour Terral. There is nothing better than listening to his romantic songs while watching the Andalusian sunset.

JOAN MANUEL SERRAT This talented artist will perform in Malaga on July 10th shortly after midnight. This great musician and brilliant poet is a perennial star on the world music scene. Serrat is not only an extraordinary singer but also performer, songwriter and recording artist. His albums such as Dedicado a Antonio Machado, Poeta or Mediterráneo brought him immediate fame. In 2008 he joined with Joaquin Sabina to release an album called Dos Pájaros de un Tiro as they both find inspiration from famous poets to create timeless lyrical songs. Shakira describes this musician the best: “Joan Manuel has become a true symbol for freedom, coherence, quality, and perfect use of our language, and a reference that we all have in reaching our goals”. So you better buy the tickets now as I am sure the Auditorio Municipal de Malaga will be full of his fans!

FEATURES LA TOMATINO

MARBELLA BEACH CLUBS Marbella is famous for its beautiful beach clubs. Nikki Beach Club is definitely one of the “sexiest coastal resorts” in Marbella and even in the world. Its concept is a perfect mixture of fun, music, gastronomy, relaxation, fashion and art. It is a special approach to life that you will fall in love with. The quality of services is excellent, the atmosphere is alluring and the amount of fun is enormous. Close your eyes for a minute and imagine a crystal-clear water swimming pool surrounded by white sun beds, palm trees, chill out music, a mojito in your hand and a delicious meal on its way. That is Nikki Beach! As it could not be otherwise,

there are fancy parties held in the club during the whole summer season. One of them is the August Yacht Party that is unquestionably one of the best events on the coast. If you´re after a different slice of Spanish culture, La Tomatino, billed as “the world´s largest food fight” may be your thing! Every year, on the last Wednesday of August, a tomato food fight festival breaks out in the streets of a small town known as Buñol, located near Valencia. It is not fully known how the festival originated. Some possible theories on how the Tomatina began in 1945 include a practical joke on a bad musician, an accidental lorry spillage or the most popularly believed theory that the event started as an anti-Franco protest. All the festivities kick off at around 11am, when 140 tonnes of tomatoes are trucked in to the ‘Plaza del Pueblo’ ready for the 30,000 plus visitors to grab and throw in the battle. Technically, the food fight can only begin when one courageous person has successfully climbed the soap-covered pole known as the Palojabón, to retrieve the ham. However, this challenging task is not always successfully completed, causing the battle to start regardless! Once the water canon has been fired, the carnage ensues and it’s every man for himself. If being covered in tomato slop isn’t really your thing, this week-long festival offers other exciting attractions to suit all types of visitors to Buñol, including paella cook-offs, parades, fireworks, music and dancing. Expect drama, chaos and an amazing atmosphere in the streets of this small Valencian town!

MARBELLA ROCKS

BLACK AND BLUE

ll I want for women, and by the way, most men, is that they look beautiful, fashionable and elegant. Unfortunately, as it turns out, not everyone can live up to my high expections! Often difficulties arise with the choice of fabric, style and, of course, colour. The main problem is not being able to create a decent outfit ensemble. It is very important to not only choose clothes according to style but colour, because colour scheme solves the problem of compatibility. There are no strict rules regarding the selection of colours in clothes, but to get rid of common errors I´ve rounded up my main recommendations on the compatibility of certain shades.

FASHION STYLIST.

ZAHRA HAS HAD 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY FROM STYLING EVA LONGORIA TO VOGUE COVERS, FASHION WEEKS INCLUDING LONDON, MILAN, NEW YORK AND LA, SUPERPAGEANT CALENDARS, STYLING FOR CANNES & MUCH MORE! SHE IS ALSO A RESPECTED STYLIST AND PERSONAL SHOPPER FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS HERE IN MARBELLA. 50 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

Forget what they used to say about black and blue “not going”. They go and are so on trend. However I´d definitely say that this combination of colours is more suited for business attire. For example, a plain black suit is very appropriate to dilute a bright blue colour that may just a bit bold for your sensible work outfits. For a cool evening look, match an elegant blue dress with a small black acetic or bolero on top. Gorgeous.

FASHION does not seem exciting enough. Try mixing up shades of blue too, although steer clear of pastels with this experimentation.

PURPLE AND RED This combination of colours gives a free flight of fancy. These colours can be used in different proportions and by priority. You can safely wear a red skirt with a purple blouse or a red dress with a purple jacket and vice versa. Pink can also be used here instead of red. Bright and sunny orange is always bold and interesting and will brighten up the dullest colour on the spectrum... brown. For example, one day wear brown trousers with an orange jacket and feel your mood lift immediately. You can also use different styles of orange jewellery. My top stylist tip is to mix rich chocolate shades with orange necklaces and earrings.

BLUE AND YELLOW

GREEN AND RED These colours look so pretty, although they do not completely match each other according to the rules of combination tones (see science part over overleaf). The main secret to a harmonious combination of green and red is the use of one colour more than another. For example, if you´re wearing a green dress, pick red shoes or a red clutch. This will look bright and spring-like and make the colours pop out more than if you were to wear them on their own.

SILVER AND BLUE This combination of colours will take you into a Christmas story. The look will be quite bright, despite the fact that these shades are cold. Blue and silver are excellent choices for party wear when your little black dress

Both colours are bright and their combination will create a colourful and hot summer ensemble. A good look would be a yellow dress, complemented by a blue belt and shoes. Equally good to pair with black if you are a bit of a colour phobe and don´t want to feel too visible to oncoming traffic.

BLUE AND GREEN This combination is perfect for the office or even a date. A great look will consist of a dense dark green dress and brown shoes or boots. You can also successfully complete the look with accessories in dark blue. A chic color combination is the combination of white with red or blue. These are three colours that can be combined with any other colour. This or white, black and grey. It is important to pay attention to the accessories. Silver jewellery will fit grey to white equally well and is suited for both gold and silver jewellery and black with pearls.

STEER CLEAR Do not wear clothing in the combination of yellow with red, (unless you are a lifeguard) blue with brown or purple with yellow or a plum color.

FASHION THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT Colours are important to making things look good, whether it’s the clothes you wear or the presentation you give at work. But not everyone instinctively knows that orange and blue are a good combination. If you can’t trust your own judgement, understand and rely on the basics of colour theory to always pick the right colours. The colour wheel or colour circle is the basic tool for combining colours. The first circular diagram was designed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666. The colour wheel is designed so that virtually any colours you pick from it will look good together. Over the years, many variations of the basic design have been made, but the most common version is a wheel of 12 colours based on the RYB (or artistic) colour model. Traditionally, there are a number of colour combinations that are considered especially pleasing. These are called harmonies or chords and they consist of two or more colours with a fixed relation in the wheel.

Red, blue and yellow are primary colours. When you mix red and yellow, you get orange; mix blue and yellow, you get green; mix red and blue, you get violet. Orange, green and violet are hence called secondary colours. Tertiary colours like red-violet and blue-violet are derived by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour. All colours have tints and shades. A tint is the variation of that colour when mixed with white; a shade is the variation of that color when mixed with black. But generally, you don’t need to worry about tints and shades for basic colour schemes, says Colour Wheel Pro: “According to colour theory, harmonious colour combinations use any two colours opposite each other on the colour wheel, any three colours equally spaced around the colour wheel forming a triangle, or any four colours forming a rectangle (actually, two pairs of colours opposite each other). The harmonious colour combinations are called colour schemes – sometimes the term ‘colour harmonies’ is also used. Colour schemes remain harmonious regardless of the rotation angle.”

Learn the Colour Wheel

In the colour wheel, there’s yet another separation that you need to be aware of so that you can understand colour schemes better: warm and cool colours. Each has its own purpose to convey emotions. Warm colours exhibit energy and joy (best for personal messages), while cool colours convey calmness and peace (best for office use). The wheel itself can be divided easily to get an idea of which colours are warm and which ones cool, as demonstrated.

Based on the wheel, there are a few basic rules to match colours. And they’re actually pretty simple. Complementary colors are any two colours opposite each other on the wheel. For example, blue and orange or red and green.

This is the basic colour wheel and it will guide you in making your choices. You’ve probably seen it in school, but here’s a quick refresher just in case you’ve forgotten.

These create a high contrast, so use them when you want something to stand out. Ideally, use one colour as the background and the other as accents. Alternately, you can use tints and shades here; a lighter tint of blue contrasted against a darker orange, for example.

FLAMINGO

MARKET PLACE

lamingo Market Place is the fresh, new concept store in Puerto Banus, where you can get the pick of the best labels from the trendiest, hippest brands from the US, Australia, London and Europe. Marbella Rocks spoke exclusively to Carla Melus, stylist and owner of Flamingo Market Place on her chic store. WHEN DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT OF FLAMINGO MARKET PLACE? I had this project in mind since I was very young, maybe 13 or 14. I always talked to my Mum about opening something where young people, and young-minded people could find everything they want. So that is why I went to college and studied fashion, to do that. AND WHAT DID YOU STUDY IN COLLEGE? I did a bit of fashion marketing and then moved onto fashion styling. WHO TAUGHT YOU THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN STYLING? I’ve always had a lot of natural fashion sense since I was really young. Then what I learnt in school was basically a lot of art, a lot of history and all that kind of stuff, which really helps you to have more ideas. I had really good teachers. One of them was Alexander McQueen. It was really tough actually as I was in London when he died. I learnt a lot through him but it was a tough experience. AND WHICH COLLEGE DID YOU STUDY IN? I studied one year in Paris and two years in London. WHAT WAS IT LIKE STUDYING FASHION ABROAD? Paris was amazing. I didn’t want to

58 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

go to London at first. I don’t know why - I just had a thing, I thought I wasn’t going to like it. I used to be into really lady-like fashion, high heels and that kind of stuff. And then when I went to London it was really eye opening, completely! The experience changed me so much. All the street fashion has really influenced me for Flamingo. DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF AMERICAN INFLUENCES IN YOUR FASHION? American fashion was never really a big thing but now I think fashion is so influenced by music. All the young people want to wear what the singers are wearing and what they see in their videos. So obviously that is why I buy a lot of my collections in the States, because people always want to wear what Rihanna’s wearing, what Beyoncé’s wearing. WOULD YOU SAY YOUR COLLECTIONS ARE SLIGHTLY MORE RISKY AND OUTRAGEOUS? There are so many fashion brands

nowadays anyway, and you don’t want to sell what other shops are selling so yeah, definitely, you want to be a bit more risky. I always like to have fun and to play around and stuff. IS COLOUR A BIG INFLUENCE AS WELL? Yeah a big influence. Obviously now minimalism is really big, but I don’t like only black and white. I like minimalism but with colour. WHAT ARE THE TOP BRANDS THAT YOU DO IN YOUR STORE? Most of the brands I carry are Australian. I think Australian fashion is really big now. Before it was maybe behind, but now they are doing amazingly. It is good quality and a good price and really fashion forward stuff. WHAT ARE THE BIG FASHION SHOWS AND EXHIBITIONS YOU GO TO AS A STYLIST/ BUYER? I go to Agenda for street wear, and then there is also Capsule in Las Vegas which is more fashion

FASHION forward, more contemporary. There are also the regular shows. With most of the brands I have, I am the only one who has them in Spain. Even if you go to Madrid you will not find most of the clothes I have. I always try to find the brands that are not here so we are exclusive and different. That does not mean that it is going to be more expensive though. WHAT ARE THE PRICE POINTS? Well you can find T-shirts from €35 to ¤40 and then obviously the more fancy dresses are maybe like ¤300 which is not too expensive either. But they are exclusive; you are not going to find anyone wearing the same dress. WITH REGARDS TO STYLING DO YOU DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE SHOP STYLING? Not yet. I would love to though. DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO LAUNCH ONLINE? Yeah, Flamingo Market Place is now one year old and we are launching the online shop pretty soon. We are trying to go global because we have a lot of customers that are foreigners. The thing is everybody that comes in is amazed, and that is something that really makes me happy. DID YOU DESIGN THE WHOLE SHOP? I designed everything. Well with a friend, an interior designer. It was my concept though. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER LAUNCHING A BEAUTY SIDE TO THE SHOP? We want to do that, because we work with nail technician Ghetto Nailz and she is amazing. She has so much potential, she can do everything. I am always up for expanding and doing different things. That was my idea when I was younger, to have a place where you can find literally everything. Where you can transform yourself. Even have DJs maybe, I have to do that during one summer! WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FLAMINGO BRAND IN FIVE YEARS’ TIME? Global. I would love to open in Miami, and maybe Dubai. YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ACCENT CARLA, WHERE DID YOU GROW

UP? I grew up in up in the north of Spain. I left Spain when I was 15 and studied in Ireland for a year, and in Switzerland for two years. Then I studied in New York and Barcelona before my main fashion marketing and styling qualifications in Paris and London. WHO IS YOUR SHOP AIMED FOR? My concept was fashion for the children of the people that shop in Gucci, they don’t want to buy there. They want to buy somewhere else, something a bit more hip.

YOUR MUM IS ALSO INVOLVED WITH FLAMINGO, DO YOU WORK WELL TOGETHER? We are partners! She’s been helping me in fashion for a long time. She used to own a store too, it was a big department store, a really long time ago. She helped me a lot, she’s my support and she is always there for me. I choose the clothes and she gives me her opinion. WHO IS YOUR FASHION ROLE MODEL? I love Rihanna, but I don’t know if I would call her my fashion model.

Secrets of sculpting make-up Contouring & Highlighting

L

et’s face it, contouring isn’t leaving the beauty world anytime soon. Highlighting and contouring is the new Photoshop! It instantly enhances your natural bone structure to make you photoshoot ready in just a few steps. By using some highlighter and bronzer you can subtly alter how your face looks! Beautiful skin is something most people crave, with the right technique and preparation you can be left with flawless skin.

Prep your skin

THIS MONTHS GUEST COLUMNIST, ALICIA RAFFAELA LORIMER, IS A FREELANCE MAKE-UP ARTIST HERE ON THE COAST. SHE GRADUATED FROM BRIGHTON WITH A TV, FASHION AND MEDIA MAKE-UP COURSE. ALICIA HAS WORKED WITH HUGE BRANDS INCLUDING DIOR, ESTEE LAUDER AND URBAN DECAY. “AS A STYLIST I PRIDE MYSELF WITH A GREAT CREATIVE IMAGINATION AND A STRONG VISUAL SENSE WITH AN EYE FOR DETAILS. Knowing how to prepare the skin is the most important step to leaving you with a healthy natural glow. Before you start to prepare your skin you need to determine your skin type. There are four types of skin: oily, dry, sensitive and normal. Some people have a combination of different skin types in different areas of their skin. Start with washing and exfoliating the skin with a gentle exfoliator to remove dead cells from the surface of your skin, this helps reveal the fresh cells and gives you a brighter and healthier complexion. The next step is choosing a good moisturiser. If you have oily skin, use an oil free moisturiser. However, dry skin really needs a moisturiser with all the right nourishment and essential oils to help soothe and revive the skin. Finally prepare your skin with a primer for make-up application. Make-up primer is a must; it works as a base for foundation that keeps your makeup smooth and lasting longer.

Flawless Foundation A great foundation is essential for flawless looking skin but it can be tricky to get it right. Foundation is worn throughout the entire day so this product should offer your skin more than just make-up. Use a foundation that boosts hydration or has a built-in SPF, You also need to determine the look you’re going for, whether you want the skin to look dewy, matte, natural or even. The most important step in selecting your proper foundation shade is to identify your skin’s undertone. If your undertone is cool, choose a natural, beige or cocoa shade. If your undertone is warm choose a golden, tawny, honey or chestnut shade. It’s important to get the best colour match possible so always test the foundation on your jawline and try to go for a product slightly lighter than your skin tone. Avoid piling on layers of product, there are lots of lightweight foundations that provide a good coverage and leave you with sheer soft summer skin.

Contouring A little contouring around the outline of your face

82 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

HAIR & BEAUTY gives your make-up an almost HD effect. When contouring, placement is key and if you are new in the game it can be difficult to know what to use and where. As a general rule select a shade that is one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. If your skin has a warm undertone then you’re in luck as the majority of golden brown shades will suit you. For skin with cool or yellow undertones, try warm peach shades that have a tan to soft brown undertone. Contouring tends to follow an E shape around the face. You would contour in places where your face would naturally be shadowed from the sun. COMMON AREAS TO CONTOUR: ● Hairline: right below your hairline at the top of your forehead, contour a little extra at the temples to visually slim the forehead. ● Nose: Along the left and right sides on your nose ● Cheekbones: Create sleek cheekbones by contouring the hollows of the cheek (to find them - suck in!) ● Jaw line: From the top of your chin to your ears and along the outer edges of the chin. The key is blending which makes it important to use a good blending brush. Powders are easier to blend and give a more natural look whereas creams and liquids give more powerful dramatic results.

Highlighting Highlighting is when you add light and reflection to certain areas of the face, making

HAIR & BEAUTY

them appear more outstanding and eyecatching. The idea is to highlight areas that will catch the light. One simple rule to remember is highlighting tends to follow a C shape over your entire face. If you don’t have a highlighter handy you can use concealer or a foundation a shade lighter than your usual shade. COMMON AREAS TO HIGHLIGHT ARE: ● Nose: Down the centre of your nose to visually slim. ● Cheekbones: Along the the top of your cheek bones. ● Chin and Lips: the centre of the chin and the area between the lips and nose, right in the dip of the cupids bow. ● Brow bone: (under your eyebrows) and in the inner corners of your eyes to make them appear bigger. Dewy looks are very popular during the summer months leaving your skin with a healthy looking fresh glow! An illuminating, liquid highlighter on the cheekbones gives your face a more fresh, radiant appearance.

Finishing the look If you feel your face is looking a little dull without some colour then consider applying a small amount of blush to the apples of your cheeks but be sure to blend well with the other products on your face. Finish off with some lipstick and eye make-up. If you’re going for a bold or smoky eye then be sure to use a light or subtle lip colour to complete the look. Finally, topcoat your make-up with a setting spray or powder to prevent any make-up meltdowns.

ow I don’t want to say I told you so, but...who am I kidding? Of course I do! A big, fat, I TOLD YOU SO. Since I predicted that the hair trend of 2015 was going to be the undone bob, every fashion forward celeb has chopped off their locks. The latest to jump on the bandwagon is Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson (Christian Grey is NOT going to be happy about this) and pop star Ellie Goulding. The British beauty has FINALLY taken out her blonde extensions and cut her hair into a shoulder-length chic bob with lots of layers to add volume and a touch of edge. I think this trend is going to run and run. At least 10 of my clients a week are happily swapping their lengthy waves for a flirty bob hairstyle. As I mentioned in a previous column, there are many different versions you can opt for but I am totally loving the blunt A’line cut, which has a revamped 80s feel to it. Throw in a platinum colour hue and you will have me drooling.

Talking about platinum, what did I say last month about ashy blondes? Yet again I managed to stay ahead of the trends as cool blondes are just everywhere. Clients are flocking into the salon with tear-outs from the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar which all have one thing in common – ash blonde. Now, while I am on the topic of going blonde, I need to get something off my chest. As much as we hair colourists love our job, we are not magicians. Many people nowadays have unrealistic expectations and I feel it is something that really needs to be addressed. As much as we would love just to click our fingers and switch your hair from jet black to ice blonde in one day, it’s never going to happen. Such a drastic colour change takes time. The road to blonde is not an easy one. If we did do it in one sitting you would end up with severe breakage, which may only be reversed by a very short haircut. Hmm, I thought that would get your attention. You should really expect the blonde process to take at least four appointments so you don’t damage the hair. Once we have eventually got you to the hue of your choice it’s then down to you, my lovelies, to take care of it. This means protecting it from the sun and keeping your hair in good condition. Paul Mitchell’s Forever Blonde Shampoo, €18.75 and also the Forever Blonde Conditioner, €19.50 work to keep blonde hair light, bright and healthy. Oh, and if you are blonde and a smoker, you will see a difference in just one week of using these products.

HAIR & BEAUTY It’s Getting Hot in Here

Creative Colouring I also wanted to talk to you about Balayage, which is loved by the likes of A-Listers Gisele, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Biel. This timeless technique has been around for a while and is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair colour requests in salons today. Before I continue, just a quick word of warning. This is a colour technique, which needs to be done by a stylist who has specifically trained in Balayage. I have noticed that a lot of hair techs say they can do it, yet they haven’t ever been professionally trained. This is when problems occur and things can get ugly - fast. On the Coast there are only a handful of stylists who are professionally trained Balayage technicians. Even in Reflections only myself - and the new addition to the Reflections family - the lovely Lauren Henry, offer this service. So enough of the lecture I am sure

by now that you actually want to know what Balayage is. The French free-handed technique allows you to scatter highlights throughout the hair in a more “sunkissed” and haphazard pattern. The colourist must have a keen sense of the hair’s texture and movement. When using foils, you work row by row, which makes the highlight pattern look very linear and grid-like. I love this technique because it gives the hair that real Californian look. It is a great way to use colour to enhance your cut and, in my opinion, it’s the most personalised and natural way to work with colour. Oh and it’s definitely not just for blondes - I use Balayage on my brunette and redheaded clients for multidimensional colour.

So finally summer is here and I feel another lecture coming on. I see time and time again that, as soon as the sun comes out to play, all the beautiful women head down to the likes of Ocean Club in their new Pucci bikinis, slather themselves with Sisley sun cream and then bake themselves in the sun. By the end of the day their gorgeous caramel highlights have turned a nice shade of ginger. Not the best look I have to say. You ladies don’t think twice about protecting your skin so why doesn’t your hair get the same love and attention? Naughty girls! So before I have to lob off all your frazzelled ends, let’s get you stocked up for the summer, as prevention is always better than cure. Firstly you need to get your hair healthy and fighting fit with the Kérastase Elixir Ultime Shampoo and Serum Set, €48.50 (which is 20 per cent off the normal price.) This duo provides ultimate shine, softness and nourishment for all hair types. I also highly recommend the Redken Extreme Length Primer and Sealer, €50.00 which is a perfect treatment for distressed hair as the biotin builds strength from root to tip and targets split ends. Finally, Kérastase Masque UV Défense Active, €36.50 is an after-sun treatment created to repair coloured hair exposed to the sun. Your hair will be left soft and shiny with long lasting colour radiance. Believe me, your hair will love you for it. Till next time Daniel X0X0

HEALTH & FITNESS

Abs’olutely Fabulous by Peet Rothwell has lived on the coast for 8 years and is a professional singer by night. His passion is fitness and wellness and along with coaching and personal training, Peet also competes in Men´s Physique Bodybuilding. AS MARBELLA ROCKS RESIDENT FITNESS EXPERT, EACH ISSUE HE WILL BE COVERING ALL WALKS OF FITNESS LIFE, FROM SPORTS AND WELLNESS RIGHT THROUGH TO COMPETITION BODYBUILDING. PEET´S MONTHLY WEIGHT LOSS AND DIET TIPS COUPLED WITH REGULAR GYM AND HEALTHY FOOD REVIEWS SHOULD MAKE FOR AN EXCITING AND UP TO DATE READ FOR THE HEALTHY MINDED.

The rain has stopped, the sun is out and soon we will be flocking to the sea. Beach club season is upon us. Knocking back your Mojito in 30 degrees with your t-shirt on is as fun as a Spanish roundabout during siesta. So just in case some of you were daydreaming about a six-pack to be proud of, let me try and add a spring in your step this summer with a few tips and dos and don’ts to help sculpt a fine front to be proud of. Now you have probably heard things like “abs are made in the kitchen” and “nutrition is 80%”. Well, this couldn’t be more true and we’ll touch on this as you read on, but to chisel out a heavenly six-pack or a Spartan core were going to have to train, feed and rest them in the right way. You’re going to carve them with HARD training and reveal them with smart DIET choices! Right the first thing I want to do is take the old-fashioned crunch and just throw it in the trash with the sweet potato peels, because honestly, it’s about as useful. Something you can do continuously for 200 reps really isn’t hard enough for you and while impressive from a stamina point of view, is not going to push your muscles past that threshold we need for growth!! Now that we’ve trashed that idea, we can talk about different methods of exercise to target our core. Let me explain a couple of technical terms (SCIENCE ALERT) and where we use them. Don’t be frightened off by one or two scary science words. You need to exercise your brain from time to time to achieve a great physique!

Isometric An isometric exercise is a form of exercise involving the static contraction of a muscle without any visible movement in the angle of the joint. For example the plank exercise is an isometric exercise as there is no movement and the tension is held. For another example of isometrics in a different muscle group take the flat bench press. If you were to lift the bar half way up and hold for five seconds then repeat, this would be adding an isometric pause. Comprende? Sometimes I end a workout with a simple ab-core-torso exercise, called the plank and side plank. I do a single 90 second hold for the plank, and 60 seconds each for the side plank. Total time: 3.5 minutes.

Concentric/Eccentric A muscle contracts concentrically and eccentrically. Concentric (positive) means that tension is created while the muscle shortens. For example, when you do a bicep curl, the muscle in the front of your arm (between your shoulder and elbow) contracts Concentrically when you lift the weight. Normally you release that contraction as you lower the weight. This downward phase is where the

HEALTH & FITNESS PEET’S TIP

START WITH ONE SET OF EIGHT REPS, AND BUILD UP TO THREE SETS OF 15 REPS. TRY THIS AB MOVEMENT THAT INCORPORATES ISOMETRICS: WHILE GREAT FOR CORE STRENGTH, ISOMETRICS ONLY LIE ON YOUR BACK ON THE GROUND USING A MAT. BEND KNEES STRENGTHEN ONE PARTICULAR POSITION. WE ALSO 90 DEGREES. PLACE HANDS ON THIGHS. NOW GO UP AND NEED EXERCISES THAT REQUIRE STRENGTH AND TENSION EXHALE IN A TWO-COUNT (TWO SECONDS) UNTIL YOUR HANDS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE RANGE OF MOVEMENT. ADDING REACH YOUR KNEES. PAUSE ONE SECOND. THEN EXHALE AND ISOMETRIC AB EXERCISES TO YOUR ROUTINE WILL HELP RETURN BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION ON A FOUR-COUNT YOU GAIN THE STRENGTH TO EXECUTE MORE DIFFICULT AND (FOUR SECONDS). MUSCLE-BUILDING CORE TECHNIQUES. eccentric (negative) contraction can kick in. Still with me? Good. Now your abdominal muscles react a bit different from your biceps or chest. Engaging what we call fast-twitch muscle fibres will promote more muscle growth. We can do this using isometrics but we benefit by adding time to our tension. Basically the slower our eccentric movement the more time the abs are under tension. SLOW and CONTROLLED beats explosive and fast any day.

Peets DOs and Don’ts Before we discuss my preferred exercises lets nip a few common mistakes in the bud! OVERTRAINING Don’t over train your core all in one session. I know you are eager and prepared to put in the sweat but you really only need 15 – 20 mins MAX to stimulate growth. At the end of my sessions I will usually perform six mixed sets consisting of two or three different ab exercises. Trust me this is enough when done correctly. TRAINING THEM EVERYDAY Again, out of eagerness I find a lot of people and clients will come to me saying they train their abs every single

day. I stop them right there. Like any other muscles, and our body in general, our abs need a certain rest period to re-grow. Hammering them everyday and overstressing them will be detrimental to the growth and speed of our six-pack development. If you can work a full ab session two days in a row then wake up for more, you are not working them hard enough. Take one or two days off. DON’T FORGET YOUR LOWER BACK There are two sides to a coin. Your core is responsible for supporting everything you do and neglecting the rear will almost certainly lead to bad posture and eventually injury. Deadlifts and squats engage the core but don’t forget to throw in the old hyper-extension (reverse sit up). DON’T STICK TO ONE ANGLE Your abs and core are made up of actual different muscles that run in different directions. Yes the bricks of a six-pack look great but we all want that’ V’ and powerful side ab wall. So make sure you are hitting the abs from different angles and mix it up from session to session. So we know a couple of fancy words, a bit of technique and we know what NOT to do. Let me show you a few of my typical ab exercises so you can get stuck in, carving your beach-ready un-photoshopped core.

Pick the Pain BURNING ABS OR A SORE HEAD? With this I like to use a ‘Smith Machine’ and a decline bench. Set the bench at a steep decline and place the bar so you can just raise your head clear with a side crunch. Reversing the movement requires concentration to not bang your head on the bar. After crunching both sides, repeat the action. As we are careful to navigate safely under the bar our core is under constant slow tension.

HEALTH & FITNESS REVERSE CRUNCH Again, setting the bench to a steep decline, hold on and raise your legs all the way up to the ceiling. Keep them pointing up and reverse the action downwards, then repeat.

Peet’s Progress As we go to press I am training for my next competition which is in five weeks. I will be stepping onstage at the The Bodypower Expo at the NEC Birmingham in the USN Classic’s Men’s Physique Fitness Model Category. In preparation for this I had a high calorie ‘off season’ to gain some size. This finished in February and then it was time for my ‘cut’. I planned out a diet based on my statistics and goal, which in this case was to lose body fat and maintain muscle. I then spread my target ‘macros’ (proteins, carbs and fats) over five nutrition-rich meals per day which looked similar to this: 240G PROTEIN 240G CARBS 60G FAT

Reverse crunch 1 Reverse crunch 2 HANGING LEG RAISES Holding a pull-up bar, let yourself hang and engage your abs to raise your knees to your chest. Squeeze, then slowly return to a dangle. Be sure to keep control of the movement and not let gravity take over or you will swing like a monkey. As you gain strength and control keep your legs straight and raise your toes to the ceiling.

MEAL 1: 100g Oats 25g Whey Protein 100ml Skimmed Milk

MEAL 4: 25g Whey Protein 30g Instant Oats 150g Banana

MEAL 2: 2 Boiled Eggs 30g Spinach 30g Salmon

MEAL 5: 100g Chicken 100g Asparagus 250g Brown Rice

MEAL 3: 140g Chicken

MEAL 6: 100 Beef 100g Egg Whites 30g Spinach PRE BED: 25g Casein Protein

PRE WORKOUT 40g Broccoli 200g Sweet Potato

I sustained this for the first four weeks, switching to a variable diet and starting my ‘carb cycle’ (read my previous article on this online at www. marbellarocksmag.com) 12 weeks out. At this point I also introduced 25 minutes of low intensity and 15 minutes of high Intensity HIIT cardio per week. Over the next weeks I will reduce my carbs slightly at the beginning of every four-day Cycle (two days normal, one day no carb followed by a high carb re-feed) At six weeks out (last week) I will have re-introduced 30g Carbs and reduced protein by 20g. And as I write this my diet sits at: ●Diet Days P200 C150 F60 ●Low Days P200 C50 F70 ●Re-Feed P200 C300 F60 ●Adding a low and a re-feed allows me to drop a large amount of calories from ‘off season’ to burn fat and retain muscle mass.

BOTTOM LINE You really do need to have a good, healthy diet to expose your abs, but when we have done all that hard dieting we want abs to die for. Hard, educated, correct graft with the above in mind will have you strutting around the pool and feeling great in the sun.

asily one of the best Italian´s here on the coast. La Fiorentina is located between Estepona and Marbella on the Carretara A7 by El Pilar. It is a beautiful restaurant with lots of al fresco dining space and a great selection of pizza, pasta, meat and fish dishes. La Fiorentina is owned and run by the charming and stunning Brigitte Pagini, who we think is a ringer for Sophia Loren. It´s a family run business and is always busy which is a great sign in this era of easy come, easy go restaurants. As well as always being bustling and full of atmosphere, La Fiorentina has a wide range of entertainment so you could be pleasantly surprised when you pay a visit and get serenaded by a local singer or get to enjoy a live band or entertainment night. exhibits are brought in as well as different theme days held. However, the main reason La Fiorentina has endured the test of time is because it can cook some of the best pizza and pasta dishes around. In case you didn´t know they are the sister restaurant to the famous Medici Restaurant also located in El Pilar. The menu is extensive and sauces can be combined with different types of pasta. Try the Spaghetti a la Brigitte (which comes with king prawns, garlic and cherry tomatoes), Cannelloni or the Cheese-filled Ravioli is fantastic. All the pasta dishes are fresh and made on site. If you´re a meat lover, we´d highly recommend trying the Chicken or Veal Milanese. La Fiorentina also has a fantastic selection of desserts. We´d recommend the Cheesecake or Tiramisu. Prices are also reasonable, with a meal for two including starter, main course, dessert and a bottle of wine, for around ¤100. La Fiorentina is open for business 7 days a week from 12 to 4pm for lunch and 6pm till late for dinner. For reservations please call: +34 952 885 765 or email: restaurantelafiorentina.es

Louise Bourgeois I Have Been to Hell and Back

F

rom 10th June – 27th September 2015 The Museo Picasso Málaga is presenting a retrospective that highlights artworks produced by one of the most influential women in art history. This summer Museo Picasso Málaga will be showing the complex and fascinating work of Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), one of the most influential artists of the 20th to 21st century. Curated by Iris Müller-Westermann and organised with the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, this is the largest retrospective of Bourgeois’ work organised in Spain to date and brings together over 100 artworks produced over seven decades, one third of which have never been shown before. French-born American sculptor, printmaker and artist Bourgeois created symbolic objects and drawings expressing themes of loneliness and conflict, frustration and vulnerability. Nicknamed Spiderwoman for her sculptures of vast metal spiders, which she said represented her mother, Bourgeois was one of the most provocative artists of all time and inspired generations of future female artists. www.museopicassomalaga.org/en/louisebourgeoisi-have-been-to-helland-back

THE RISE OF STREET ART

S

treet art, although still technically a form of graffiti, is now gaining acceptance around the world as a legitimate art form. Contemporary street artists such as Banksy have popularised this viral type of guerrilla urban art and, although sometimes unintentionally, propelled themselves into profitable careers as mainstream artists sought after by galleries, auction houses and private collectors. In a new two-minute undercover video documentary by Banksy, filmed in Gaza, the anonymous street artist depicts real life for ordinary Palestinians . Entitled “Make This the Year You Discover a New Destination”, Banksy gives us a glimpse into the tunnels he used to sneak into war-torn Gaza and the locations of his provocative artwork. See www.banksy.co.uk Recently a Banksy mural, painted on the only remaining piece of a bombed house in Gaza, was reunited with its homeless owner who says he was duped into selling it for just $200. Photo copyright Jane Jewson Now it looks as though Banksy could have visited Andalucía and created a piece of subversive art on the side of a deserted and ruined farmhouse. Spotted by local Jane Jewson, herself an artist, on the road from Casares to Gaucin, the mural has definitely been created in a style not dissimilar to that of Banksy. Jane told Marbella Rocks: “The uneven road below the peaks of the Crestillina on the route to Gaucin requires a driver’s concentration but if you know the road and have not succumbed to familiarity paralysis, you look up and something unusual catches the eye. Bristolians are known to visit here, is this the work of Banksy perhaps as an ironic, poignant reminder of the futility of conflict?” What do you think?

t is all very well to consider saying ‘no’ to drugs and alcohol, but when people around you are using them, and those people are friends, peers or colleagues, it also brings confrontation with fear, namely of rejection and judgement. Therefore, the choice of saying ‘yes’ to your life and ‘no’ to a life of drugs and alcohol, needs to be made with great strength. Building this strength begins with a choice. Question… would you rather face the possibility of rejection and judgement in pursuit of a healthy, positive life that supports your highest potential for happiness? Or would you risk the consequences of taking drugs and drinking more than you want, which in turn may lead to other problems? Addiction, mood disorders, psychological problems, relationship turmoil, inability to focus on work, life management decline, depression, anxiety, paranoia, schizophrenia and poor health are just a handful of the potential side effects. Choice is a powerful thing. Once it is made, it can act like a shield to all of the external opinions and inner fear filled thoughts. What is your choice?

GIVE UP THE DRUG

We live in a culture where quick fix, short-term, pleasureseeking behaviour is valued over long-term rewards. This is part of the problem: sensual pleasure seeking mentality over true happiness. Instead of walking away from unsupportive people, habits and situations, we engage in short-term pleasure, disregarding what can often be the devastating consequences especially when drugs and alcohol are involved.

CONSIDER THE BIGGER PICTURE Who do you now want to be? How do you want to live? What type of people do you want to surround yourself with? How do you want to feel? What could your life become? Who could you grow into if you open to new possibility, even if it means facing the furriers and the fears? Opening the mind to what could be, sews the seeds of hope and possibility, and when you have these seeds and a firm choice, you can do anything you want.

ARM YOURSELF WITH STRENGTH

Courage is a choice that is not meant to exist without fear. Remember, just as the mind has the capacity to generate fear, so too can it produce thoughts and sensations that fuel important choices. Make acquaintance with the centre

102 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 10

PSYCHOLOGY

of your strength, learn what makes this stronger, and connect daily with this, so that when the fears come, you are armed for a winning battle.

KEEP ZAITH

It can be hard to imagine how life can be if drugs and alcohol have been the status quo, and it can be hard to deal with rejection from a peer group if you do not know anyone else, yet. However, just because you do not know what can or will be, it stands to reason that anything can happen! And, as you start to make more empowered choices about who you want to be and how you want to live, the chances of being who you want to be and getting what you want become greater; it can all go in a very positive direction, towards a healthier and happier you, if this is your choice.

MY TIPS

● Choose your people: If those around do not support the person you now choose to be, change your crowd. If they do not support a choice that matters to you, perhaps they were never your people, but you may find your fear was clouding reality and your real friends are the ones that fully support your choice. ● Command respect: Having the courage to say “no” can be tough, but it can also feel great to commit with what you believe in. By calmly explaining to people why you don’t want to use drugs or drink, you may earn respect from others. ● Decide to say ‘yes’ to what matters to you the most, it is the most important thing. ● Build self-esteem: If learning to be assertive, to stand up for yourself, voice your truth and believe in what you can do are challenging, there are many books, online

resources, workshops and personal coaching options to support you. Believe in yourself and your capacity to say ‘yes’ to what you want and ‘no’ to the fears that bind you. It is not only about drinking and drugs or peer pressure, it is always about self-esteem and this can be developed by everyone. It is your life, your health, and your happiness, so say ‘yes’ to what you really want, and the strength, courage and faith will grow with you.

t’s that time of year again where every celebrity under the sun attends the most hyped up festival of the year – Coachella. From Kendall Jenner to Fergie, Behati Prinsloo, Ian Somerhalder, Brooklyn Beckham, Sarah Hyland and Gigi Hadid, these stars have been making the most of festival life in the Colorado Desert. Coachella wouldn’t be the same without a high-flying celebrity-infused bash. The Forever 21 BBQ was held in La Quinta, with a host of famous faces. Alessandra Ambrosio, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene and Julianne Hough were some of the elite guests at the BBQ, which was set around a picturesque pool in the middle of the desert

new film worldwide, along with his talented co-star Britt Robertson. The film is based on the Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, where he plays professional bull rider Luke Collins. It is a classic romance that follows the budding relationship between Luke (Scott Eastwood) and Sophia (Britt Robertson). However, their different lives and conflicting paths cause a stir in their relationship. Sophia wishes to follow her dream job in New York, whilst Luke wants to continue his career on the rodeo circuit. Their romantic future is put to the test but they find comfort in an elderly man, Ira (Alan Alda) who tells them of his own romance and love story with his beloved wife.

MTV Movie Awards Coachella wasn’t the only celebrityinduced celebration taking place last month. The MTV Movie Awards, which took place in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California was packed with famous A-listers including Zac Efron, Shailene Woodley, Cara Delevingne, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Ratajkowski and Scarlett Johansson. Additionally, there were four very special guests in attendance - much to the crowds’ excitement: Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell collaborated to present the award for Best OnScreen Duo. The four talented actors will appear in their highly anticipated film The Fantastic Four, showcasing their

incredible superpowers. In the upcoming reboot, Kate will play the role of Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Miles Teller is cast as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic). Michael will take on the role of Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Jamie will play the role of The Thing, where his skin turns to a rock-like material. The film sees the super heroes infected with newfound powers after an experimental journey goes wrong. The film will debut on August 7th 2015.

Coachella gives the perfect backdrop and opportunity for their elite guests of models, actresses and singers to flaunt their savvy and fashion forward gear. So, Nikki Reed cleverly seized the opportunity by launching her REVOLVE clothing collection at the Avalon Hotel in Palm Springs. It was a small Twilight reunion as her co-star, Ashley Green, from the popular Twilight franchise, was there in full force to support her. Clearly proud of her new venture, Nikki promoted her collaboration on her social media page writing on Twitter: ‘So proud of this! Thank you all for coming! #pswxrevolve @ peoplestylewatchmag @revolveclothing.’ Victoria Justice was another highflying guest who showed off her fashion credentials at the much-anticipated event.

SPENCER MATTHEWS The former lothario was seen with his new girlfriend, Lauren, at the London premiere of Cinderella.

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST MAY 2015

Aries

Gemini

Leo

You may end up feeling you need to be in two places at once this month. That phone is constantly ringing, emails clog your inbox and meetings and invitations need juggling in an already busy schedule. Answer everything in a timely fashion and keep a diary to prevent you forgetting something or just feeling overwhelmed. Travel, if only for work is likely, but allow extra time as delays, breakdowns and snafus are likely - as are cancellations. Check everything before departure. You could be put in a position where either a past business opportunity re-emerges or you have to renegotiate something you thought was done and dusted. Don’t worry. You’ll actually see the delay has worked in your favour as your position has changed. The result: a better one than if this had happened earlier. Take a second bite of the apple in May - it’s going to be so much sweeter.

You’re seeking reassurance from loved ones this month and as a result prepared to do more for them in return. A deficit is not likely to go down well however but leave you feeling oddly vulnerable. You may also feel that no matter how clearly you explain yourself, people are determined to misunderstand or misinterpret your meaning. There’s a cosmic closet clearing out happening now, but don’t despair. What happens when we de-clutter? We get to refill that closet with things that suit us so much better. This goes for every aspect of your life. Money matters should be all in your favour with even extra cash available or a new source of income opening up. When it comes to romance you may shun the club scene and instead opt for an intimate dinner or somewhere you can get close. Cocoon with who or what you love and let the social butterfly emerge later.

Love, partnerships and long-term connections of all kinds could just have that fated feel to them this month. Chances are if you meet someone new now you’ll discover how many times in the past you almost connected, or else fate takes a hand and literally ‘arranges’ for you to meet due to you being somewhere unexpected or unplanned. Someone from your past could return but now the connection has fresh relevance. Whatever happens this month, you’ll have the feeling that time/fate/the cosmos/karma is playing its own part now. It’s not just the teacher that appears when the pupil is ready - the opportunity appears when the time is right. You’ll see all too clearly that too much struggle is a sign it’s not meant to be - at least not right now. But when the timing is right - success in any venture, and that includes love, is effortless.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

If you’ve been feeling taken for granted, stuck in a rut or simply that things need to change then you’ve a green light to go after whatever it is you need to shake up your life and pop that metaphorical champagne cork. Of course, it could get popped for real as you find yourself in a party mood and possibly celebrating. That inertia that’s been dogging you of late is jettisoned as a sparkling new you emerges. Something in the early stages such as a romance could hold future promise, and as first impressions count this month, pay attention to the one you are creating as you’re coming up on people’s radars in the best possible way. If you’re feeling creative, inspiration could also be channelled into giving yourself a makeover on some level. Every star gets the chance to have a come-back. This month could just be yours.

It’s no time to stay at home or lurking on the sidelines, Cancer. New friends and connections can be made and what’s more you won’t have to look far to find them. Chances are they will find you first - or flock like moths to a flame. Get ready for more than one flirtation opportunity but my advice is to take things slowly with regards to that lover who’s just arrived on the scene. Prince (or princess) or frog? You’re on maximum attraction mode this month but be aware that we attract both what we desire and also what pushes our buttons on some level. Very often this turns out to be one and the same thing. If someone from your past reappears then again, use discretion. The past can be a trap and really the leopard doesn’t change his spots - and neither does the frog you´ve kissed before!

When it comes to love you need to know it’s based on friendship. Don’t be surprised if an existing connection morphs into something more now or you make a new connection, which hots up in the future. The universe actually wants you concentrating on enjoying the company you’re in without spending too much time worrying about what kind of connection it may turn out to be. There’s a ‘live in the moment’ feel to this month and you’ll get the most out of it by simply enjoying it for what it is without worrying about where it may be headed. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re just ‘going with the flow’ in every aspect of your life as career plans force you to prioritise those goals. If it means re-approaching someone you have dealt with or worked for in the past, then do so now. This includes that company you’d love to work for but which previously turned you down. Knock again. This time you may get to enter.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Craft your image in the way only you can this month, Libra. Yes, that includes investment dressing and I realise I just gave you carte blanch to indulge in one of your favourite pastimes - shopping. Keep a close eye on your budget but a closer eye on how others are reacting to you. I have one word for you when you are meeting people or considering that new outfit: class. You will come to realise the benefits of taking care of your image as you create exactly the right impression whether it’s on a personal or professional level. The result of all this can be attracting that lover or business opportunity that you might have previously thought out of reach. You’ve reached that moment where you understand the difference between trendy and timeless. One is ephemeral, the other lasts. That goes double for love and success. Do it with class.

That former lover or a blast from the past could offer a “second time around” opportunity this month. Just remember it’s your decision this time around. You may be all too aware of just how vulnerable your heart is under that happy-go-lucky exterior. So, take care if that bad boy/girl is telling you they have changed. This month could see temptation or even forbidden fruit dangled in front of you and you in turn asking if you can resist temptation. Here’s my rule of thumb for you this month: if it’s broken don’t try to fix it. Go for the person who doesn’t need fixing instead. Yes, that damaged, broken, disenchanted lover exudes allure and a magnetism that’s hard to resist and you’re sure you have the cure you. But be warned, your heart could be what ends up needing fixing in the long run.

If someone wants to win your heart this month - especially if an ex reappears with that intention, you’ll be letting them know that talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. It’s the little things that count and you’ll be watching carefully - whether this is a new lover or a former one, to see if they back up what they say and are willing to walk their talk. Time to dust off and revise that creative or business project that didn’t quite get you the result you wanted the first time around and think about relaunching or presenting it to someone new. You may be pleasantly surprised at the result. It’s not a time to sell yourself short - in either business or your personal life - or to ‘settle’ for something just because you think there may not be something better out there. Don’t be afraid to take a chance.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

If you’ve been indulging in a Gone with the Wind mindset - in other words, you’ll think about something ‘tomorrow’ - then this month brings you that tomorrow as something you have avoided which surfaces in a way you can no longer ignore. This may be long overdue, but once it is out of the way the only feeling you’ll be left with is that of wondering why you didn’t tackle it sooner. Chances are it’s been holding you back on some level and May sees you in a mood to shrug off any restrictions. If you’re looking for a playmate with a similar mindset they could be from a very different background or part of the world than you and share your present desire for fun and adventure. Travel brings opportunity and you could end up feeling the world’s your oyster. Journeys end in lover’s meeting Shakespeare always knew what he was talking about!

I shouldn’t need to tell you to take care of mundane work matters as you usually have your eye firmly fixed on your daily responsibilities, but pay close attention this month as something could even escape your watchful eyes leaving you with a mess to clear up. That being said, love could offer you a sweet antidote to the daily grind. If you’re already taken then you and your other half could recapture that feeling of new love while singles could snag someone who ticks all the boxes for them and who could just turn into a long term prospect. Joint ventures of all kinds and that includes business ventures and collaborations and even activities, are set to thrive now and if you’re without someone to partner you in any area of life, then a candidate could appear. You’ve heard the saying ‘Nature abhors a vacuum’? This month could see that empty space in your life or your heart filled at last.

Ensure you have those home handymen numbers to hand and know where all your important home documents are this month. Things may need attending to around the home especially if you have been putting things off. This may bring you down to earth with a bump due to the fact that the vibe of this month for you is playful, fun and tinged with something a little extra special. Don’t be surprised if hedonistic pleasures feature in May. If they don´t occur naturally you’ll be seeking them out! Time to get your groove on and abandon yourself to the music, to sensuality and yes, to love. More than one potential lover could attempt to charm you - and charming will be the operative word that describes anyone approaching. No matter where you find yourself, you’ll attract attention even without trying. So don’t let domestic issues spoil the party - or rain on your parade.
