Ava Acuña
Ava Acuña is a highly ambitious 12-year-old that is passionate for dance. Throughout the week you can find her at multiple dance classes, located at The Jewel of the Art Studio, where she dedicates herself to honing in on her craft. Ava’s love of dance has been rooted in her since
she was in diapers as she would spin, stomp and groove to music. As Ava grew older, her mother and older cousins introduced her to the captivating world of dance. At the age of 9, she was confronted with a decision between re-engaging in softball or taking her first step into the world of dance. With the unwavering support of family and friends, she chose to try out her first dance class: Intermediate Hip Hop. Ava was initially clueless as to what to do in her first class except she only knew that her desire to dance was insatiable. However, with the guidance of Miss Jackleen Rios, she quickly learned how to refine her skills and become a more controlled dancer. As months skipped by, along with blood, sweat and tears, Ava’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed. She was promoted into the Advanced Hip Hop class where she is continuing to grow and flourish as a dancer. She started off there nervous and still quite clueless, but she was taught how to further extend her skills as a dancer and with that, her love burned even brighter. Now she is putting her hip hop talents to the test and acquiring more, in the Advanced Modern Contemporary class and The Jewel and Co. Opportunities such as recitals, workshops, and the chance to meet other well-known dance artists such as Phil Wright in the field have provided Ava with invaluable practice and a platform to showcase her dancing talents. Looking ahead, Ava is inspired to pursue a future in the dance industry or explore her passion for writing as an author. Beyond the studio, Ava finds joy in dancing outside on her back porch as the sunsets cast a warm glow through the trees and flowers of her backyard. She finds happiness from attending church, contributing to her community, immersing herself in books, and daydreaming about crafting her own series of novels one day. Additionally, she delights in sharing laughter with her family, playing board games, savoring home cooked meals, and soaking up the joyful moments that life brings her. Her passion for dance continues to blossom thanks to the many people who have guided her through her tears, confusion, challenges, and mistakes throughout her beautiful ongoing dance journey.

A Guide to Reading Financial Statements for Small Business Owners Although you may be familiar with the various financial statements that are presented to a business owner, you may need help to interpret them correctly. This guide will provide you with the necessary information to make informed decisions. Financial statements are composed of various components such as the income statement, cash flow statement, and balance sheet. The Income Statement An income statement shows a company's income, expenses, and net income for a specific period. It's important to note that the amount of money the business makes and spends during a specific period is shown. When reading an income statement, look at the revenue or sales section. This will show how much your business makes from selling products or services. Next, look at the cost of goods sold section, which shows the expenses directly related to producing the products or services sold. The difference of revenue and cost of goods sold is the gross profit. After gross profit, the income statement will show operating expenses. These expenses can include rent, utilities, salaries, and marketing expenses. The difference between gross profit and operating expenses is the operating income or loss. Lastly, the income statement will show non-operating income and expenses, such as interest income and taxes, ultimately leading to the net income or loss for the period. The Balance Sheet The balance sheet provides a snapshot of a business's financial position at a certain point in time. It shows what your company owns, owes, and what is left over for the owners or shareholders. When reading a balance sheet, start with the assets section, which shows what your business owns, such as cash, accounts receivable, inventory, and equipment. Next, look at the liabilities section, which shows what your business owes, such as loans, accounts payable, and taxes owed. The equity section shows the difference between assets and liabilities, which shows what is left over for the owners or shareholders. The equity section is further broken down into two parts: contributed capital, the money invested by the owners or shareholders, and retained earnings, which is the money earned and reinvested by the business. The Cash Flow Statement Inflows and cash outflows for a particular time are documented in a cash flow statement. The specific time reflected in a cash flow statement is typically a month, quarter, or year. It shows how much cash your business generated from operations, investing, and financing activities. When reading a cash flow statement, start with the operating activities section. This section will outline the cash inflows and outflows related to the day-to-day operations of your business. Next, look at the investing activities section, which shows the cash inflows and outflows associated with buying and selling assets, such as equipment or real estate. Lastly, look at the financing activities section, which shows the cash inflows and outflows in conjunction with borrowing or repaying loans, issuing or buying back shares, and paying dividends. Tips for Reading Financial Statements 1. Look for trends over time. By comparing financial statements from different periods, you can see how your business performs and identify improvement areas. 2. Pay attention to ratios. Ratios, such as the debt-to-equity ratio and the gross profit margin, can provide valuable insights into the financial health of your business. 3. Feel free to ask for help. If you need help reading or interpreting financial statements, consider hiring a financial profes sional or consulting with a mentor or advisor. Understanding how to read and interpret financial statements is essential for small business owners. By understanding the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement, you can gain valuable insights into the financial health of your business and make informed decisions about its future. It's essential to look for trends over time, pay attention to ratios, and seek help when needed. Remember that financial statements are just one tool in your financial management toolbox and should be used with other financial management strategies, such as budgeting and forecasting.
Scooter’s Coffee® Names Joe Thornton as Next CEO Continued rapid growth remains at the forefront as company transitions to new leadership Scooter’s Coffee, recognized as one of the fastest-growing franchise systems in the U.S., and best known for its amazingly fast drive-thru and specialty coffee, today announced that Joe Thornton will be appointed Chief Executive Officer of Scooter’s Coffee, effective January 1, 2024. Thornton currently serves as the company’s President and will succeed Todd Graeve, who will retire after serving as CEO since 2016 and after nearly two decades in the Scooter’s Coffee business. “Joe has been a blessing for our business since joining as President. He’s an exceptionally experienced leader in the restaurant, franchise and retail industry, and I know Joe is the right leader for us in our next acceleration of growth,” said Don Eckles, Co-Founder and Chairman of Scooter’s Coffee, LLC. The remainder of 2023 will serve as a transitional period for Thornton and Graeve. “I am honored to continue the leadership legacy and lead Scooter’s Coffee into the future in support of our franchisees and employees. The family roots, core values and
stability of this company are unmatched,” said Thornton. “I knew this company was special from the moment that I arrived, and I have a deep commitment to ensure that we continue to build an enduring brand.” Thornton has 40 years of leadership experience in large-scale operations, strategy and human resources at some of the most prominent industry-leading companies, including most recently as Chief Operating Officer at HMSHost and, prior to that, Chief Operating Officer at Jamba Juice. Thornton also spent 25 years combined at Starbucks and Blockbuster in executive leadership roles earlier in his career. As the company looks ahead to a strong future with Thornton leading the growth and changes on the horizon, the co-founders also recognize and are appreciative of the path built over the last 25 years. “During this exciting time and planned transition, I also must acknowledge the incredible impact Todd had on the company. We wouldn’t be where we are today without him,” said Eckles. “He always walked with integrity and was vigilant about protecting the company’s core values as we grew. Every brand says they will maintain their core values as they grow but often lose their way somehow.”
Graeve joined Scooter’s Coffee in 2005 as a franchisee and developer in Kansas City, alongside his business partners. In 2008, he joined the leadership team at the company as Chief Financial Officer of Scooter’s Coffee. He served as CFO for eight years, before transitioning to CEO in April 2016. “Almost 20 years ago, I started on this journey at Scooter’s Coffee as a franchisee, and I’m so excited to circle back to my beginnings and help my family with their Scooter’s Coffee franchise journey,” said Graeve. “I will always treasure my time as CFO, CEO and a franchisee, and I will be rooting loudly from the sidelines as this company continues to build on its greatness.” “We have really built something special here,” said Eckles. “We have done things that no one thought we would and have surpassed everything we ever imagined with Todd at the helm. Now, with Joe leading the way next, I’m very excited for the future. And, extremely grateful for the past.” About Scooter’s Coffee Founded in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles in Bellevue,
Nebraska, Scooter’s Coffee uses only the finest coffee beans in the world, which are roasted by its affiliated company, Harvest Roasting, in Omaha, Nebraska. In over 25 years of business, the key to Scooter’s Coffee’s success is simple: stay committed to the original business principles and company’s four core values, which are Integrity, Love, Humility and Courage. The Scooter’s Coffee Brand Promise, often recited to franchisees, customers and employees, is: “Amazing People, Amazing Drinks… Amazingly Fast!®” It represents the company’s business origins and reflects a steady commitment to providing an unforgettable experience to loyal and new customers.
Scooter’s Coffee, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023, is at the dawn of a strategic growth phase nationwide. Its network is approaching 750 stores in 30 states, and the company plans to have more than 1,000 stores open by the end of 2024. Scooter’s Coffee ranked #13 on Yelp’s 2023 list of 50 Most Loved Brands in the U.S. and ranked #3 on Franchise Times Fast & Serious 40 Smartest-Growing Franchises in 2023. Scooter’s Coffee is striving to become the #1 drive-thru specialty coffee franchise system in the nation.
Make The Call by Howie Nestel As 2023 draws to a close, business owners are presented with a prime opportunity to strengthen relationships and set the stage for success in the coming year. One powerful, yet often overlooked strategy is the simple act of picking up the phone and calling your clients. In the digital age, where emails and text messages dominate communication, a personal phone call can make a lasting impression. It goes beyond the impersonal nature of written communication, allowing for a genuine connection in the absence of a face to face interaction. When reaching out to clients, express gratitude for their patronage, inquire about their business outlook for 2024, and don’t forget to ask about their personal holiday plans.
Closing out the year with a personal “customer touch” can foster a sense of loyalty and trust. It's a chance to acknowledge achievements, address any concerns, and show genuine interest in their success. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to discuss upcoming business plans, enhancing alignment for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In a world where customer service and relationships matter more than ever, taking the time to connect verbally can be a game-changer. As the year concludes, seize the moment to dial in and close the year out strong while paving the way for a mutually prosperous future. Charity of the Month ABOUT US Elf Louise with Santa The Elf Louise Christmas Project is dedicated to providing a little bit of joy to Bexar County’s disadvantaged children. Get into the spirit of Christmas! Join Elf Louise volunteers in spreading joy throughout San Antonio! The current-day Elf Louise Christmas Project has evolved into a community-based 100% volunteer organization. The Project is run by a Board of Directors and Core Volunteers. These individuals work year-round to ensure the project will continue into the future indefinitely. We have over 4,500 volunteers who wrap gifts and deliver toys during the Christmas season. The project began in 1969 when our founder, Louise Locker, was a student at Trinity University in San Antonio. She found that for many San Antonio families, Christmas just did not exist. Louise began to look for a way to provide a few Christmas presents to some of these children. That
first year, with the help of a friend, she collected gifts for children in 13 families. In 2022, the organization helped 5,345 families with 18,277 children! The Elf Louise Christmas Project is a 501 (C)(3) Non -profit organization staffed by all volunteers and funded by donation. 98 cents of each dollar donated goes directly to the purchase and delivery of the toys. The Elf Louise Christmas Project relies on the help of donations from grassroots San Antonio, and corporations who want to share their blessings at Christmas. People also donate toys, but since we need over 60,000 gifts, we have to purchase many of them. Our current budget is over $316,000. These donations ARE 100% deductible on your taxes!!! +1 210-224-1843 elflouise.com

There’s a new food truck in town, and it’s powered by third-generation pitmaster Adrian Davila! This award-winning restaurateur and cookbook author of Cowboy Barbecue: Fire & Smoke from the Original Texas Vaqueros is taking his mouth-watering menu on the road with his new food truck, Davila’s on Wheels. Davila’s on Wheels has joined the lineup at the famed Bésame Bar and Food Truck Park in San Antonio, Texas (511 E Grayson St, San Antonio, TX 78215). Adrian’s latest concept expands his family-owned restaurant in Seguin with a fresh take on catering that includes Texas
barbecue with a Latin spin. For Adrian, the food truck is a way to bring his family's barbecue tradition to new audiences in the city and allows him to share his passion with more people than ever before. He states, “Whenever we had the opportunity to be a vendor at the AT&T Center for the Spurs, we received a great reaction from the community of San Antonio. The Spurs reflect the people and culture of the city and found they truly connected with our food and story. We were invigorated more with having a presence there and being a part of the rich history and are very excited to be a part of that in a new way.”
The menu will be South Texas Tejano-inspired cuisine that’s a mix of modern Mexican comfort food. What you would expect from the menu is something you would enjoy from your abuela’s kitchen but with a modern twist infused with the classic smoke and spice known from Davila’s BBQ. Approachable and made for sharing with the ones you love, much like how he grew up eating, guests can dine on items like smoked pork belly nachos, lamb barbacoa tacos, brisket grilled cheese, and more! Adrian Davila is a nationally-recognized barbecue restaurateur, chef, and pitmaster at the acclaimed Davila's BBQ
in Seguin, Texas. His grandfather, Raul Davila, opened Davila’s in an old abandoned schoolhouse in 1959, more than a half-century ago. He passed on the secrets to create the famous rubs, potato salad, the sauce of Davila barbecue, and his smoked BBQ to his son, Adrian’s father, Edward Davila. Edward’s mission was to make every guest at the restaurant feel a part of the Davila family, no matter the amount of money they had in the bank account or the color of their skin. The Davilas are deeply proud of their Mexican-American roots and family tradition of creating the best barbecue in Texas.
Now a third-generation pitmaster, Adrian has taken the Davila family name to the nation. Where his father and grandfather dedicated their lives to building the business, Adrian's mission is to share it. Adrian credits his grandfather and father with teaching him the value of hard work, “They laid a wonderful foundation and footprint for Davilas. They are men of little words, but their dedication to their business and family to put food on the tables has inspired me since I was young. My grandfather put in the early hours getting the restaurant started, and my father expanded into catering and sought different opportunities
for business. Their entrepreneurial spirit set me up and allowed me to be able to travel and cook all over the world, write a cookbook, and continue to expand the brand.” Most of his youth was spent in the kitchens of the barbecue restaurant, learning all the special techniques until he could prepare everything on the menu to perfection. Adrian still practices those skills today and has since created unique barbecue recipes for the restaurant and their extensive catering business, including his new venture, Davila’s on Wheels.
Davila’s on Wheels will be open at the food truck park Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m. You can also find Davila’s BBQ at the AT&T Center for the San Antonio Spurs season and during the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

How Capparelli’s On Main Began Gay Capparelli, the owner, has learned third generation recipes from her grandparents Gaetano and Rose Capparelli. The patriarch of the family, Gaetano “Guy” Capparelli Sr. migrated from Calabria, Italy to Ellis Island as a young boy at the age of ten and worked in bakeries as an apprentice for many years to become a master of his trade. He later married Rose “Grandma Capp” Pellicci in 1934 and together, they began opening restaurants in Western Pennsylvania. After a trip to San Antonio, they fell in love with the city and decided to make it their permanent residence where Gay grew up working side by side with her family and later opening her first restaurant on Blanco Road at 25 years old.
Capparelli’s On Main was converted from an antique store and opened into an Italian restaurant in May 2001. Gay had a vision to expand on the existing recipes by offering a larger variety of dishes including seafood while creating a more intimate, upscale dining experience. While owning a small business, Gay focuses on values that are important to her like quality, consistency, community, and supporting other local businesses as well as family above all. The restaurant’s overall mission is to provide an option for the community and its visitors to enjoy homemade Italian food while making patrons feel comfortable in our family environment. 2524 N Main Ave 210-735-5757 www.capparellisonmain.com
Celebrating Christmas and New Year’s with a Time-Honored Menudo Tradition During the holidays, many families around the world will gather to celebrate cherished traditions, and for Vanessa Valadez’s family, nothing says Christmas and New Year’s quite like a steaming bowl of delicious menudo. Rooted in Mexican culture, menudo has become a beloved tradition for countless families, and Vanessa’s family is no exception. Vanessa has a deep connection to the tradition of menudo. Her family’s authentic Mexican recipe, passed down through generations, is a testament to the rich flavors and heartfelt moments associated with this festive dish. For Vanessa, the secret to a truly exceptional menudo lies
in the careful selection of high-quality tripe and a special blend of spices, all infused with a generous dose of love. Running her family’s business Para Todos, a company deeply rooted in Texas, she understands the importance of providing families with the finest ingredients to create memorable holiday meals. According to Vanessa, the process begins with sourcing the best tripe ensuring it meets the highest standards of quality. (she recommends Para Todos Cut Beef Tripe, found in the frozen meat section at most Texas H-E-B stores). The tripe is seasoned with a blend of spices that has been perfected over years, resulting in a flavorful and aromatic broth that forms the heart of the dish. But beyond the ingredients, Vanessa emphasizes the importance of infusing the cooking process with love and familial warmth.
In the spirit of spreading joy and sharing traditions, Vanessa is generously sharing her grandmother’s menudo recipe with all of us. By doing so, she hopes to inspire others to create their own memories and continue the tradition of enjoying this hearty and soul-warming dish during the holiday season. So, as you gather with loved ones this Christmas and New Year’s, consider stopping by H-E-B and adding Para Todos’ authentic menudo to your festive table. It’s not just a meal; it’s a celebration of family, love, and the rich cultural tapestry that makes the holiday season truly special. Para Todos Menudo Makes 8 to 10 servings Remove excess fat from 1 bag of thawed Para Todos Frozen Cut Beef Tripe and rinse.

“Holidays and Boundaries”
Winter time is a time for celebration for many; the lights, the sounds, the eggnog, and other festivities bring for people to come together and be merry.
However, for many reasons, the winter season can bring upon elevated levels of anxiety. In a recent study from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 64% of people living with a mental illness felt their condition got worse around the holidays. Reasons included the weather change, shorter daylight hours, lack of time to see everyone they love at family gatherings, financial pressures for gift-giving, loneliness, grief from missing a loved one, a change in family situation such as a separation or divorce, or even being around toxic family members out of pressure. It is important to note that while the holidays can be stressful for many, setting boundaries is an effective way to lessen the burden. For example, if someone is worried about financial pressures, setting a firm and realistic limit on what one can financially support or give is important. While gift-giving or throwing lavish events is nice, it is not worth one's mental health to be broke for the holidays. It truly is about the thought behind the gesture, and not the price associated with it. Feeling pressured to provide for an entire extended family? Most people would be perfectly fine with a potluck gathering. Feeling pressure over gifts? A gift card can go a long way to allow the person to choose what they want on their own time. Some other boundaries can be having to be around toxic family, or what is expected. The truth is that a boundary on who you spend time with can be set. For many people, this can be a hard pill to swallow: people say "it is family, this is how it is always done." It comes down to who you invite into your space. If there is a certain family member who is causing you anxiety, you can be polite and keep communication to a minimum, if at all. If you are feeling anxious about seeing a family member you do not get along with and really dont want to go to a gathering, your mental health takes priority. Remember: a boundary only has to make sense to the person setting it. I often remind my patients: their title to you does NOT entitle them to you, or your time, or your peace. However,
leaning on healthy family during this time is okay too. Keyword: healthy.
tWhich brings the point of new traditions; for some people, the family rift can be large and unfixable, and for others, they may be grieving the loss of a family member, going through a separation, or feeling lonely. I often encourage my patients to take control of the holiday season and start their own traditions. It could be a trip, a friend or "chosen family" gathering, a quiet dinner, or going places like the zoo for Christmas (I did this once, it was a lot of fun). The point is that one does not have to follow any traditions, but rather make their own. I have seen people also use this time to volunteer and act in service of others instead during the holidays, which I have often encouraged as a wonderful new tradition to bring peace to the person volunteering, and also to the person receiving their gift of time. As for people feeling anxiety due to the weather change and lack of sunlight, I encourage people to open their window blinds and be active as much as they can; bundle up and don't stay inside too long, as by nature, people benefit from any natural sunlight they can get. There are lights however that one can use to help with these low feelings and moods, such as a HappyLight, which is strong enough to substantially make a dark space very bright. The biggest way to beat the holiday anxiety is to remind yourself that you are one person; you cannot be everywhere for everyone. It is important to remind yourself of this, and then realize you are in control of how to spend your day, and with whom. It is okay to go to as few or as many holiday events as you choose, and to give as few or as many gifts as you can comfortably do. I remind my patients this: "No" is a complete sentence. The holidays can be a stressful time, but if you give yourself the power to set boundaries, it can be as joyful as you choose. Happy Holidays, folks! Dr. Potthast

Breast Cancer: Taking Action for Prevention Every month, we mark our calendars to raise awareness about important issues facing our world. These events, known as “Awareness” days, are crucial in shedding light on various problems. However, it’s important to go beyond awareness and take action to solve these issues. One such issue that deserves our attention is breast cancer, given its widespread diagnosis and devastating impact. Breast cancer affects not only women but also men, with the number of cases rising among males. Shockingly, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their lives, along with 1 in 833 men. It accounts for 30% of all new cancer cases each year, making it one of the most common cancers. In the US, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. Although less common, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. While 85% of breast cancer cases occur without any family history, having a family history does increase the risk. This suggests that there are other factors at play. Genetic mutations and oncogenes are known to be underlying causes, including the well-known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Today, I want to shift the focus from awareness to prevention when it comes to breast cancer. My views may be controversial, but they are firmly rooted in scientific research. When looking at articles on the causes of breast cancer, you will find sources blaming hormone replacement therapy. However, scientific evidence refutes the notion that natural bio-identical hormones cause cancer. Instead, lifestyle factors play a major role, particularly the consumption of refined sugars found in the Standard American Diet. The link between diet and genetic mutations in oncogenes can be traced back to the 1930s. Otto Heinrich Warburg, a Jewish physician who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1931, discovered the metabolic pathway of aerobic glycolysis in cancer cells. Warburg’s work was so significant that even Hitler, driven by his irrational fear of dying from cancer, spared him from the Holocaust. This demonstrates the long-standing connection between diet and oncogenes.
In addition to diet, significant hormone imbalances, particularly “estrogen dominance” caused by environmental exposures, can disrupt the delicate balance of our hormones. Many substances that are banned in Europe are allowed in our foods, plastics, additives, and pesticides by the FDA and government bodies. These additives act as hormone disruptors, triggering excessive expression of receptors and other genetic expressions that promote cancer cell growth. It stands to reason that adopting healthy lifestyle practices can help reduce the risk of breast cancer. This includes consuming clean,
non-processed foods, choosing lower genetically modified options, avoiding plastic containers for food storage and microwaving, and using clean makeup and household products. Regular exercise, quality sleep, and stress reduction are also essential. Additionally, there are excellent dietary supplements, vitamins, and minerals that can boost immune system function and reduce the risk of cancer. Contrary to popular belief, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy can actually lower the risk of cancer when used appropriately.
In my work with patients, I emphasize the importance of clean eating and clean living to reduce the risk of various diseases, including cancer. If you’re interested in learning more, I invite you to listen to my podcast with all the relevant links at drpbetterlife.com. a 26 year career. I pulled the Ironman aspirations off the shelf, dusted them off, and picked up where I left off. 2019 Ironman Cozumel 140.6 was my first goal. All I wanted was to finish and know that I could do this distance. After 20 weeks of training with a plan and then with a coach, the day came and I was able to grind my way through the race in 13 hours and 59 minutes. All I wanted was to finish in less than 14. Yes!! Goal reached!! Days after, as I looked back on the race, I remembered I had stopped to chat with friends, I took 30 minutes in transitions changing into bike gear or running shoes. Plus, I stopped to order a bottle of water and drank most of it at a restaurant along the route because I was dehydrated. Add to that, my bike was 12 years old, the gears were really hard to shift — not electronic shifting. All of these things in my mind and I thought, “If I just control those controllable variables, I could take at least an hour to an hour and a half off my race time. That would put me at 12:30 to 12:59. That’s whole lot quicker! So in doing my math, knowing the race course, and assessing my own athletic abilities at that point, I set the goal of finishing Ironman Cozumel in 11 hours and 30 minutes. That’s one hour for the swim, 6 hours for the bike, 4 hours and 10 minutes for the run and 20 minutes for transitions. After a year and a half of Covid delays, I managed to do Ironman Cozumel again and I finished in 11 hours and 44 minutes. I couldn’t believe I finished that much faster. It was a whole two hours and 15 minutes faster than my very first Ironman. It took me a few days to digest that, and I thought, “Why the heck not give it a try?” Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice or Frogs, Tails and Puppy Dog Tails. What are Iron Women Made of? I grew up often hearing the children’s poem that goes, in part, “Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what little girls are made of.” This may be true up until a certain point. Especially as athletes, once you zone in on a goal, you don’t stop until you get there. This is where that sweet poem no longer seems to apply. That’s the case in careers, athletics and probably other areas of life. In 2010, I set a goal to do an Ironman. I’d already qualified and run the Boston Marathon, but could I achieve a bigger goal? It seemed unreal, unattainable. That year I trained and finished 2 half Ironmans (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run) I was thrilled! I felt like I had set a good training foundation to start amping up for a full 140.6 mile Ironman. I signed up for one in 2011 but as destiny would have it, I had nagging lower back problems and then I became pregnant with my daughter so all aspirations to reach an Ironman were put on the shelf. Fast forward nine years later and my two younger kids were in school. I also had decided to retire from television news after
I use the next year and a half to choose a race where I could possibly qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. That was a race I had only seen on television and could never have imagined I would be part of it. 2023 would be my year. I qualified for Kona in April at Ironman Texas in the Woodlands. It was a dream come true. Plus, I had signed on as an Ironman Foundation athlete so I’d be racing and raising money for sports programs for underprivileged and underrepresented athletes. I was planning for this to be my last year of full distance Ironmans and was going to give it my all to finish and to raise money for the foundation’s charitable works. As luck would have it, my body was not aligned with my goals. Six weeks into hard training, I fractured my fibula above my ankle bone. Long story short, after 6 weeks, then 8, and then 10, it was not healing. I had lost training time for my runs. I barely swam and minimized my bike sessions. In the end, with 2 weeks to go before the race, my X-ray had shown my fracture had even expanded and become a displaced fracture. My doctor warned I should not race. I risked worsening my injury and having to undergo surgery with pins put into my ankle. The
recovery, he said, would be even worse and longer than it was currently. By this point, I’d been hobbled for 12 weeks. My bike training was good, my swim was decent, but I had done no running whatsoever. All I knew in my mind, was that I could, and had, finished marathons before with insufficient training, so I had to be able to get through this. The doctor’s warnings swirled in my head and kept me up at night. Would I injure myself so badly, I could never run again the rest of my life? Was it worth it? I had to at least go to Kona. I knew I’d make the trip. Would I sit on the sidelines cheering my teammates on? What if I did the swim portion and some of the bike? I could stop on the
bike anytime if I felt myself hurting too much. But what if I did okay on the bike? Should I quit at the start of the run? I could do that. But if I felt okay, I’m sure I could walk the marathon? Maybe do a walk and run? That’s it! I was dead set on going and racing conservatively until I could do no more. I’d listen to my body and just do what I could. And I did. You may still ask, but why? I didn’t feel like I was letting anybody down — except myself. I had worked so hard for my goals, aspirations, dreams, and to make an impact for the Ironman Foundation. I could not just turn away from all of that. I put my whole heart and soul Into this year and for the past five
years, anticipating and preparing for this day, I had to show up — for myself. I took the trip, got myself to the starting line, and 15 hours and 51 minutes later, I ran across the finish line. My swim was kind of slow at an hour and 39 minutes, my bike was decent at six hours and 37 minutes but the marathon was the longest marathon I have ever completed in my entire life. It took seven hours and some minutes. I never imagined how painful it could be to walk most of a marathon. I ran maybe about 6 miles or seven total, the rest was walking. But crossing the finish line, greeted by Hawaiian flowers everywhere, the finishing arch and the announcer calling my name as an Ironman finisher was the sweetest moment in the world. I would never change that, and I am so glad I decided to go. Have you ever had that
moment of truth when you had to make one of the biggest decisions of your life? Do you stay or do you go? Do you finish or do you quit? What did you do? Did you want it badly enough, you took a big risk? I would never tell anyone to defy doctor’s orders, everyone’s journey is different, but we know in our hearts what is made for us and what we are made for. And this was one of those cases. And, now, I am an Ironman World Champion finisher. Maybe one day, I’ll go back. I want to. But if I don’t, I know I’ve been there and done it. Best of luck on your life journeys and choices. Make the best of them because you may only get that chance once in a lifetime.

How to Prepare Your Home for the Fall/Winter Months By: Angela Pownall Repair your lawn after the summer heat Over the summer, the hot sun makes soils dry, and very hard, preventing moisture from penetrating through. Fall is the perfect time to aerate the soils, which allows the moisture, nutrients, and air to get down to the roots of your grass. Improve home security for those darker days As it gradually gets darker earlier in the day, burglars are more likely to strike, and break in during these darker days. Invest in upgrading security cameras, and make sure the perimeter of the home is well lit. Burglars will most likely stay under the cover of darkness, so the less dark areas around the outside of your home, the better. Also, make sure to check that all windows are kept shut and locked at all times. Summertime can make you want to open up the windows, so make sure to double check, because burglars are very likely to enter through an unlocked or open window. Clean up and prepare decks for colder weather Clear off any decking areas, making them free of any leaves or debris. Paint or stain the deck, as needed, so you can get ahead of the weathering process. Keep in mind the fall temperatures when staining or painting, as cooler weather can affect drying times. Fill in any cracks around the property Although a task that is not super enjoyable, making sure cracks in asphalt, cement, and wood are filled in correctly can save your home from future damage. Water that freezes in cracks can expand, making the cracks bigger whether this is your house, or your driveway. Maintaining your home twice a year (spring and fall) is important so that your house can be it’s best quality, and stand against the elements. If you wait until later in the year, you may find yourself making repairs in the colder, harsher months. While major household maintenance really only needs to be done a few times per year, it will also benefit a homeowner to stay on top of smaller maintenance issues, such as checking smoke alarms, and other minor repairs inside the home.

From the beginning, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez made their mark through innovation and fusion of different styles of music. Their ability to blend genres seamlessly is evidenced in their cohesive collaboration with symphonies throughout the United States. Maestro Hernandez’s classical arrangements have led to them sharing the stage with symphony orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Santa Rosa Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Jalisco Symphony. This magic was captured in their 25th anniversary symphonic album, which led to the first ever Mariachi Symphony Grammy nomination! Indeed, the theatrical aspect of Sol de Mexico®’s performances has been an attraction to Hollywood for soundtracks, where they have provided music since the 1980s. Their work can be heard in films such as Rango, Glory Road, Sea Biscuit, Don Juan de Marco , and many more. The versatility of Sol de Mexico® to expand to new audiences has led to fabulous, unexpected collaborations, such as with the Beach Boys and Willie Nelson. Within the world of Latin music, Sol de Mexico® has played alongside stars such as Vicente Fernandez. Selena, Jose Feliciano, and a record-breaking concert tour with Luis Miguel. The group has now been nominated for ten Grammy awards both Latin and American. But more than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the mariachi tradition that Mariachi Sol de Mexico upholds. When they are not playing for heads of state or global audiences – they can be seen locally and equipping a younger generation of musicians through the Mariachi Heritage Society. Que Viva Mariachi!

Singer/songwriter Karla Bonoff grew up in Los Angeles and briefly attended UCLA. Emerging from the Monday night hootenanny scene at the Troubadour nightclub, she was a member of Bryndle, a folk-rock group also featuring Wendy Waldman, Andrew Gold, and Kenny Edwards, that formed in 1969, signed to A&M, and cut an album that was never released. Edwards, a former member of the Stone Poneys (a band featuring Linda Ronstadt), and Gold were later part of Ronstadt's backing band, and they brought Bonoff to her attention. Ronstadt recorded three of Bonoff's songs on her 1976 album, Hasten Down the Wind, leading to a recording contract for Bonoff and the release of three albums on Columbia Records, the last of which, Wild Heart of the Young (1982), featured the Top 40 hit "Personally." Bonoff worked on movie soundtracks during the '80s, notably on Footloose (1984) and About Last Night (1986).

Winter Adventures in Scotland and Ireland Submitted by Bryan and Sandra Shreve SA Monthly Food and Wine Editors
for generations to sustain life, caring for their livestock the same way as the ancient herders.
SA Monthly readers, and our dearest friends in San Antonio’s best socialite circle, editors Bryan and Sandra Shreve traveled near and far to bring you the best experiences whether local or distant to assure you get a glimpse of joy and happiness within our community and wherever we travel.
As we trekked trails, winding roadways through and up to feudal and medieval villages with mostly abandoned stone castles towering over the landscapes, no other travel adventure depicts purity of hundreds of years and generations of history from kings, queens, knights, folk lore of peasants and herders camping in the isolated hills and valleys. Mostly cold and wet weather during this time of year filling the many rivers and lochs, which sustains the cattle, sheep, and the local fishing. Scotland is still one of the most scenic countries in the world.
Imagine cool climates, rolling hillsides, rugged terrains, steep oceanside cliffs, and the greenest green country sides painted with castles, along with Scotland’s breed of shaggy coated Highland cattle, flocks of fluffy white- and brown-haired sheep segregated in groups by stacked field stones checkerboarded across the hillsides wide and long enough
Historical distilleries dating back to the 1700s,’ tasting whiskey from the barrel. Maybe the want-to-be Viking in me yearns for the cool
nights, a manly leathered pelt draping over my shoulder, while drinking mead, which has been famous in Scotland and Ireland most likely because of the Vikings. Mead is fermented wine, yeast, and honey, interesting, I can imagine me drinking from a horn vessel as previous Vikings partook generations ago, and me being loud and obnoxious looking unshaven, but freshly bathed (need to break a Viking rule or two). Meanwhile, back to reality, Sandra looks at me and says really. Must see destinations: Glasgow – where the heart of world adventures and commerce begins– ship building. Loch Ness Cruise – if you are a baby boomer, you know. Whiskey tasting – Blair Athol Distillery (1798)
Edinburgh Castle The Old Course at St Andrews (golf) Titanic – well, that’s been done. As we enjoy a smooth ferry ride to the Land of Ireland, a Dublin visit, Georgian buildings, cathedrals, and Guinness since 1759, the landscapes, cool rain, and winding routes to the coast is why Guinness is so loved by the world. This Irish dry stout, dark and a world of history, literally, the man, the legend, Arthur Guinness, a master brewer, signed in 1759 a 9,000-year lease on St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. Who does that? And yes, it is still there!!! That is worth a pint or two! Must see destinations:
GUINNESS… Blarney Castle Sheepdog Demonstration – that was so cool. If only my neighbor’s dog good be so good. Medieval castle Banquet – food, so, so… experience unforgettable! Pubs in both countries – pub crawls are a must do. Cheers.
As winter approaches, is the gym that important? Vacationing to faraway lands is more pleasurable! Remember 3 letters… B: Breakfast, L: Lunch, and D: Dinner or B: Beer, L: Liquor, D: Distillery
