CHRISTINE TURNER: HISTORY, HORSES & WINNING By Andrea L. Algar "How she wound up as an owner of a world-class horse competing in the Rio Olympics as a relative newcomer in the world of International competition, along with several top up-and-coming horses, is an amazing story".

S

an Antonio’s Christine Turner has accomplished what few have attempted, and even fewer have done successfully. She has bridged the world of historical preservation and equine competition into a perfect blend of excellence in the most graceful way possible. Serving as an active advocate of preserving San Antonio’s rich history, Christine Turner knows a thing or two about fighting hard for something she believes in. Her name is well known and well respected within the San Antonio community. Serving as Fourth VP of the San Antonio Conservation Society and Chairman of NIOSA, Christine demonstrated over the years that she has an immense love and appreciation of history and in preserving it. What started as a two and a half year paid position quickly led to a volunteer 17 year position where she faced difficult decisions, chal-

lenges in fundraising, long hours and the stresses of coordinating on one of San Antonio’s most cherished events. Leaving a prestigious position to enter a world of International equine competition that includes breeding, training and Olympic level competition is not a traditional career path to take. For Christine Turner, however, the transition just made good sense! How she wound up as an owner of a world-class horse competing in the Rio Olympics as a relative newcomer in the world of International competition, along with several top up-and-coming horses, is an amazing story. As a life-long horsewoman, I easily relate to how one becomes drawn to horses. These majestic animals have a way of grabbing hold of your heart. But entering the world of high-level competition is not an easy

task, much less on an International scale, and not one that most casual horse-lovers could ever contemplate. I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to interview Christine Turner. I needed to know more about the woman who has accomplished the feat. While my own experiences with horses were primarily for pleasure only, I’ve encountered friends and acquaintances in the equine world who were involved in

showing, or in various forms of events such as dressage, driving, racing, jumping, roping and even saddle seat. To excel in these sports usually takes connections, money, and extreme dedication. To do so on the National level is difficult‌.to do so on the International level stretches beyond what most people can accomplish in a lifetime. In order to answer the ques-

tions which were forming much quicker than I could possibly get answers to, I wanted to meet Christine on her turf. Upon arriving at Indian Creek Farm, I was met with expansive views of tree sprinkled meadow, a large eventing field, paddocks and structures in the distance as a small herd of deer gracefully sprinted across the drive. I slowly made my way to the end of the long winding drive as I was instructed at the gate. I was greeted by Christine’s daughter “Tommie” and farm manager Kelly, both young women in their twenties. They warmly greeted me and lead me to meet Christine in her home which sits atop the original barn that was built in the mid 1800’s by the Scheel family who were German im- 9 migrants. The original property was 633 acres owned by Deaf Smith, a courier sent to deliver a letter to Sam Houston when the Alamo fell. The property was deeded to him by the Republic of Texas for his service during the Battle of the Alamo. I had a deep sense that this must have

been an appealing aspect of the property for someone who had been so immersed in conservation. Christine jumps right in, explaining that she was drawn into this because of her daughter’s desire to ride. She states, “I had a Western pleasure horse. She wanted to ride English.” She and her husband Tom E. (TJ) Turner IV, purchased the farm when they had just one horse. “We took possession on our 20th anniversary. We knew we had to get another because the place was too big for just one horse. We found my daughter a Trakehner horse that was four. After that it just kind of kept growing. I’m one of those ‘it’s all or nothing’ people. If we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it! We’ve had to learn by trial and error. We’ve had to learn as we go.

The horses she keeps at Indian Creek farm are a combination of retired horses, mares and foals, and our current Texas competition horses. “We have five we ride on a regular basis. Babies are being brought along with ground training. Other competition horses she owns are kept with her Olympic rider Boyd Martin in Pennsylvania. “We’ve really made a good partnership,” she states. Boyd rode in the Rio Olympics, riding Blackfoot Mystery, a horse which is co-owned by Christine. Boyd’s wife Silva is a Grand Prix dressage rider. Christine states, “For him, it’s the thrills and spills. I think Boyd could ride a cow and make it loo good. He’s amazing.” Most people have to work to find the right connections and earn their way in any new profession. Christine states that she has been helped immensely by Dr. Mark Hart, the United States Team Veterinarian, and her mentor Dr. Tim Holekamp, a longtime equestrian who was very willing to share his knowledge. She explained, “I would ask Dr. Holekamp questions and he would give five pages of answers. He sort of took me under his wing and has been very helpful. Dr. Holekamp opened many doors. It’s actually one of his horses I bought who everyone is starting to recognize. Tsetserleg, who we all call Thomas, was always one I felt was going to do something. It took a while and now they’re starting to see it. Thomas is that Trakehner who can just keep going. He always pulls it off.” Everyone at Indian Creek Farm is proud of the fact that Thomas officially earned a *Pg* from the American Trakehner Association, fulfilling the requirements for the Performance Gold Award in eventing. Just a few months ago, Tsetserleg *Pg* (Thomas) was named by United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Reserve National Champion for the 2017 Eventing Championship! Boyd has hopes for Thomas to make it to the 2020 Olympics. Perhaps 2020 Tokyo Olympics? “Someone’s going to have to tranquilize me,” Christine jokes. Horses currently with Boyd Martin for training and competition are Tsetserleg *Pg* (Thomas), Kyra, On Cue, Electra, Halimey Go *Ps*, Z Wind, Rusticus and Blackfoot Mystery. Schoensgreen Hanni (Hanni) won gold for the US at the Pan American Games in 2011 and resides at Indian Creek Farm. According to Kelly, “We don't have 100 babies per year like your typical race barn would have, one to three babies per year is what we normally have. We like to take our time with them.” As we wrap up talk about Christine’s venture into the world of International eventing, we turn to the farm itself. Her passion for history and preservation quickly bubble to the surface with visible animation and enthusiasm. We begin with a tour of her home. When Christine purchased the property she created a spacious expanse of living space with walls of glass that take in views of her equine facility and magnificent Hill Country views beyond. It was easy to

see the influence of Christine’s conservation background. The blend of materials used in the construction seamlessly blend and compliment the true history of the building below, even though the two were built centuries apart. Reflecting on her home, she admiringly states, “This whole house has great views. When I go to our house in town, it’s a little claustrophobic.” The tour of the property was an amazing venture not only into the equine world, but into the history of early Hill Country settlers. The buildings on the property are rich in a history that Christine knows well and is very proud of. She has lovingly restored the properties buildings, taking great care in maintaining original aspects. Going downstairs via an outdoor stairway, we start in the barn, visiting feed rooms, tack room and the offices, “Where everything is done.” Ribbons hang everywhere, proud reminders of her daughter’s riding accomplishments, and those of the horses in their keep. As we walk by several antique carousel horses and dime-store horse kiddie rides, Christine remarks, “and these are the best horses in the barn,” laughing over something she doesn’t really believe, but showing quick wit and a flare for lighthearted humor. We walk over to the original homestead, a home Christine’s daughter Tommie lives. “We like the history part.” She points out the “Comanche window” and other unique features stating, “It’s a great place to be.” We walked from there to the mare foaling stalls, which are double stalls designed to keep pregnant mares in comfort. Christine comments, “We left part of

the original rock wall, but we wanted to protect it so we put up a cover so they (the walls) wouldn’t be damaged. It’s unbelievable that it’s still here. He was in the Civil War and then he brought a wife here. It was a hard life. Kids walked to school and risked getting bit by a rattlesnake. Just childbirth alone was …No thanks!” It took five years to get a property adjacent to her farm which also has an historic home. Christine gives a little history stating, “One of the Scheel daughters married the neighbor. It’s your typical Hill Country home. It’s a cute little house. We’ve tried to make it historic so they won’t tear it down. It was originally half as big, but they added on to it in the 70’s. Someday we’ll make it back into something. The house has a little storm cellar and an old greenhouse. We’d like to turn the storm cellar into a wine cellar eventually. I just haven’t got there yet.” Pecan trees produce nuts and they’ve found peaches, rosemary, figs, apples, pears, lemons, limes, asparagus, and more. Her brother found blackberries and Christine states, “We’ve been making blackberry pies ever since.” The house itself has creaky sounds from the original wood floors and it bears all the signs of an old house which was well kept and cherished. “It’s amazing how thick the walls are. You don’t hear any road noise at all (even though it’s right next to Highway 46). I love it over here. I could live here. It’s a great place.” As we wind our way back to the main house, Christine’s attention turns back to her horses and the life she has created with them. With a smile, she states, “My whole phone is pictures of horses. Everywhere I go is horses. When Tommie was 14 she dressed up her horse Tango and took a wonderful picture that could go on the cover of a romance book. What our horses will endure!” With Tommie and Kelly working the farm together Christine doesn’t have to worry much. She states with confidence, “They’re both hard workers and good at what they do.” And, they seem to listen to Christine’s mantra, “Make sure you’re safe….do it right.” Reflecting on her husband’s feelings about her adventures, Christine states, “He is such a good sport about it all.” It is evident that she is enjoying her new role immensely. My visit with Christine Turner at Indian Creek Farm was enlightening. I came away with a genuine admiration of a strong woman with pure drive and passion. Although her husband is a successful businessman, she is not the type of woman to sit in his shadow. She is a selfmade woman who takes the bull by the horn and gets things done. A woman who balances her own drive with fierce loyalties and a kind, giving heart with such ease. Much as horses themselves do.

SINGER OF THE MONTH

WENDY JO BRADSHAW "If you plan ahead and commit to your goals there should be no excuses in achieving your desired goals." I once had a piano that Barry Manilow played and then autographed. I composed my first songs on this beloved piano that I named, Could It Be Magic. Then, one night, I had a dream that I was dragging the piano through a tunnel in a mountain. The piano and other belongings were in a net that I struggled to pull along the tunnel. In this dream, when I came out on the other side of the mountain, the net, the piano, and my other worldly possessions were gone. I realized that, sometimes, the magic is in letting go…. After many years of setbacks, my second-chance album has finally been released for distribution. It is titled, FOR MY DAD. I named it that because he encouraged me to finish this album and he supported me in my music. Like many of our dads, he loves these jazzy, Big Band classics of the 30's, 40's, & 50's. What came between my first album and FOR MY DAD is

the story of my 14 year journey of healing from “Dis-Ease.” The last time I released an album was in 2004, and that was when the setbacks began. Just weeks prior to my CD Release party, I was drugged and raped in the very studio that it was recorded. The trauma of that event threw me into a devastating spiral of PTSD. Initially, I used alcohol to numb the pain and sadness, but it didn’t fill the void left by what I had lost. Within one year, my once healthy body started falling apart – I required multiple surgeries to remove tumors which necessitated a hysterectomy. Still healing from the first surgeries, I was given the terrifying diagnosis of Stage III Melanoma. Because I was uninsured at the time, the financial devastation of battling the Dis-Ease only added more insult to my injury. I was left with few choices, so I sold my home and recording studio business, along with the Barry

Manilow piano, to pay for my medical bills. I hit rock bottom, and what saved me was my music. I have long believed that we are all born with unique gifts, and we honor those gifts by sharing them with others. When I write songs, I feel like I am calling on a higher power. The music and lyrics can come to me in dreams, but sometimes even when I am engaged in the mundane tasks of daily life. I am not always sure whether the music comes from my subconscious or from my higher power, but to me, they are treasured gifts, all the same. I have not shared much of my original music with the public, preferring instead to stay safe, by singing and recording jazz standards, by the great songwriters of the past. Although my fans have enjoyed these smooth and treasured classics, several friends who are aware of my original compositions, have requested that I record and release my original music.

20

After much thought, I decided to step out of my comfort zone by featuring one of my latest songs, Traveling, that I composed to accompany a soon-to-be-released children’s book that I also wrote. Now, my quest is to help children heal from the unending onslaught of negativity and personal attacks that they frequently encounter today, especially online. To this end, I have created a character for kids called VIPPI Mouse. His quest is to help each child discover the most valuable treasures in the universe, like themselves, a treasure that is greater than gold. Music is a powerful force. It healed me from Dis-Ease, and I’ve been told by a variety of people that my original songs have helped them through personal difficulties also. To those of you who are suffering, I'm here to confirm that to heal from Dis-Ease takes forgiving others (but mostly forgiving yourself), and it takes letting go. Last, but not least, it takes persistence - Don't let setbacks keep you down! PERSIST! *I Made It Through The Rain, and you can too! *I made it through the Rain and Could It Be Magic, are songs by Barry Manilow." Photography by Lee Steadman

Chef Kim Van Winkle: A Chef’s Journey

28

I was 14 years old when I landed my first job at a Mexican restaurant. Each day, I was up and out the door by 4:30 a.m. My role there had no limits. Once I was there I was the waitress, prep cook, cashier, busing tables, washing dishes…there’s nothing that I didn’t do at that age. As the years went on I found myself working at every end of the restaurant industry, everything from grill, fry, prep, expo. You name it, I did it. And I kept wanting to learn more and more. There are so many memories from my journey that taught me something. I remember one busy Saturday night, a customer ordered A Filet Mignon Medium Rare. I froze, but then went for it! Not knowing how to cook a filet mignon, it was sent out and the server came back about 15 minutes later and the customer had said that was the best filet mignon he’s ever had! And I was very shocked and flattered. I couldn’t believe it! It was stuff like that, that motivated to keep going and keep learning. So, I did! I truly appreciated the journey in smaller kitchens, as I learned not only to cook but have confidence in

myself. I remember when I realized “I’m ready, I’m going to go and apply for the big leagues.” I had applied at Biga on the Banks. There I am in this gorgeous restaurant, sitting across the table is Chef and owner Bruce Auden. I recall he had a nice, soft toned voice. While looking at my application, he takes off his glasses, folds his arms, and leans back in the chair. “Kim, you have no previous fine dining experience, no culinary experience.” He says, “Why should I hire you?” I replied with the only reasonable and logical answer, “Well Chef, you have to start somewhere!”That was my first chef job and quite a memorable lesson. Since then, I have shared the kitchen with celebrity chefs, dubbed San Antonio’s “go to” chef for private catering to celebrities, host livestream cooking session and am a radio personality on a local radio station in San Antonio. My journey from kitchen to chef has taught me one thing…I love what I do and my love transfers to my dishes. My kitchen philosophy is and always will be, “It can taste good, but does it taste like it was made

The St. Anthony, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Welcomes New Executive Chef John Zaner. The St. Anthony Hotel recently hired Chef John Zaner as the luxury hotel’s new executive chef. Under his direction, The St. Anthony Hotel will embark upon a culinary transformation, reshaping their food and beverage experiences.

30

Of special importance, we will be partnering with like-minded local farms, ranches and artisans as we curate The St. Anthony Hotel’s culinary platform, said Zaner. When you’re working with a story as grand as The St. Anthony’s, it’s important that the food and drinks weave into this narrative in as striking a way as the property itself. We are excited to welcome Chef Zaner and his tremendous culinary skills to The St. Anthony Hotel as we work to evolve, elevate, and grow our culinary offerings, said Mark Yanke, the hotel’s new president and managing director. The setting we have to offer is very special and one of a kind in San Antonio, and we want our cuisine to be the same. With Zaner’s hiring, Chef Stefan Bowers, who oversaw the hotel’s culinary operations, has returned his focus to his two successful ventures at The St. Anthony with partner Andrew Goodman: the highly acclaimed Rebelle restaurant and Haunt cocktail lounge, a popular destination for cocktail connoisseurs. We are thankful for Chef Stefan Bowers’ direction and vision as we continued to raise our culinary bar, added

Yanke. Chef Bowers’ accomplishments at Rebelle and Haunt have made for a tremendous partnership and we look forward to our continued relationship with him in the future. Chef John Zaner brings more than 30 years of culinary experience to The St. Anthony Hotel, a repertoire that includes work at a number of five-star resorts around the country. He served as the executive chef of the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, Hawaii for more than 12 years, and most recently as director of culinary operations at the La Cantera Resort & Spa in San Antonio. Watch for exciting new developments as the new vision of Zaner and his team is rolled out in the coming months.

BOBBY DECKER and the

EXTREMELY big secret john robert mack

N A T H A N G O S S AS b O B B Y d e C K E R AND b O B B Y d e C K E R with

The universe twisted and spit Bobby out on the other side. His eyeballs nearly popped, his eardrums screamed, and something shoved him so hard, he stumbled, catching himself with one fist on the floor. Three deep breaths and the vortex settled. “Dimension-hopping sucks.” He chuckled. “But I nailed it, right? Fist on the floor, one knee down, and eyes on the floor. The classic pose for anyone passing through an interdimensional portal.” He rose. “I’ll be back.” Bobby stood at a crossroads in time. Literally. It was called the White Room, but it wasn’t really a room. More like a state of mind. According to both quantum physics and metaphysics, every point in the universe was connected. That’s where Bobby stood: the place where all those points met. “It… looks like a big white room,” he said. Not so impressed.

I heard that! the Bird Lady said in his mind. SA She was his boss. MONTHLY MAGAZINE Ugh. And psychics.? They made him want to drink. A glass of whiskey appeared in Bobby’s hand. What the what? He sipped. Nice. He could get used to that. Why are you there? Bird Lady chirped. To get drunk? No, Bobby was there to get in touch with himself. Literally. He unfocused his eyes. Several years working against the Time Police had given him the skills to reach into the void. He’d never been to the White Room, but he knew how to use it. The space around him was an enormous white expanse, but if he let himself see them subtle shifts in the white drifted like snow on an ice-covered lake. There he was. Bobby Decker, age 16. Had he ever been so young? Not what we’re after. The Bird Lady chirped. Bobby squeezed his eyes tighter. He twitched his head to the right and the scene scrolled and whirled. Dozens of Bobbies streamed past.

57 Stop! she squawked. The image came to rest on a sixteen-year-old Bobby Decker in a different timeline who’d apparently just come out of the shower. The other Bobby stood in Grandpa Olive Oliver’s house making body builder poses.

By the time the older Bobby had reached sixteen, Grandpa Oliver and his house had both been reduced to ash. That’s why we’re here, the Bird Lady reminded him. We need to help the Danny Decker who lived. Danny. Bobby’s little brother. Taken as an infant and given to this timeline, where he wouldn’t die as a casualty of war. And now Bobby had to help the little brother he’d never met, who believed this other Bobby was his real brother. The one who spent way too much time in the mirror.irror.

Bobby had lived through a planetary invasion and grown up in a world where he’d learned to fire his grandfather’s rifle before he’d had his first kiss.

SA MONTHLY MAGAZINE

And Bobby had fought. He’d tried. He’d died. Well, almost. The Bird Lady and her sidekick had slipped him out of his timeline, too. All for the multi-universal good. And here he was about to hand this Bobby the one and only thing that could help little Danny save the planet. Well, the planet and everything else in all of space and time. Bobby held up a hand and it appeared. A box. A plain, wooden box that could change history and prevent the destruction of, well, pretty much everything. Get on with it, the Bird Lady coerced. Bobby dropped the whiskey, knowing it would simply cease to exist.

58

Then the box, knowing he could call it up when he needed it. He put his shades back on and centered. He reached out. The multiverse turned inside out. And the other Danny appeared. He yelped and dropped to a knee, one fist to the ground.

Bobby chuckled. “You totally nailed it.” The younger Bobby rose and stared blankly. “Fist on the floor.” Bobby shook his fist. “One knee down.” “Terminator,” young Bobby muttered. “Arnold Schwarzenegger.” Nice. One of the all-time classics. Bobby had seen it on a mission to a timeline where Arnold became President. Young Bobby looked around, then spun with wide eyes. He looked down and yelped again, backpedaling several feet. “Where the heck am I?” the younger Bobby demanded. He stared down, then jumped and landed hard. “Who are you?” He circled Bobby, alternately examining the older version and scanning the non-existent horizon. “What the hell?” “This. . .” Bobby opened his arms to the expanse. “Is a sort of interdimensional safe room, a convenient place for me to meet you.” He shrugged. “To meet me.” With one hand, he removed the glasses. With the other, he yanked off the cap.

ianca started her modeling career when she was only 7 years old. She saw an article in the newspaper in McAllen Texas. She cut out the article and kept asking if we would take her to the model casting. I would ask her if that was what she wanted to do and every time the answer was “yes”. The day of the casting arrived, and I took her. Bianca was the only child at the casting. When we finally got called in, there were 3 people doing the interview. They asked her several questions. The main gentleman said that he was very proud of her for having the courage to audition and for being the only child who was there. He also told her that she would “go far”. Well, she was selected and a month later, May of 2014, she did her first photo shoot. She modeled a beautiful blue dress from James Michael and was published for the first time in the Contempo Magazine. She became the house model for Berenice’s Kids dress store in McAllen. She did several photo shoots for Berenice’s Kids and had her photos displayed on the front of building. Bianca won Top Model for the Angels of Love Organization and Charity for abused kids. Bianca has been featured in a YouTube video by Ivan Valentine. We moved to San Antonio in March of 2015, where she got settled into a new school. Bianca continued her participation in the Gifted and Talented program, also called the Alpha Program. She is also a two-year member of her school’s student safety patrol. Bianca is also in her school choir. Bianca is now represented by her mother

agent, Lari Nelson of Nelson Fashion Group, The Agency Model and Talent. She takes runway classes with Lari and has done numerous fashion shows and photo shoots. Bianca has been a model for Melrose Fashions for 2 years. She has modeled clothing for designers from New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Bianca is an ambassador for a designer from Dallas and a photographer in San Antonio. Bianca has also had photos published in San Antonio magazines and has been featured in one of them. Bianca attended the Model and Talent Expo, by Mike Beaty, twice. She received several call backs and is now signed with Landrum Arts LA Talent Agency and Actors Choice Talent Agency, in addition to Nelson Fashion Group. Bianca takes acting classes with Mr. Steve Pena. She was cast, and continues to work, in an upcoming film titled “Laura’s Fate”. Bianca takes her modeling and acting career very seriously and has worked very hard to get where she is today. Her dream is to model in Paris and act in Hollywood.

Life Begins Outside John Robert Mack

“Live your life and forget your age!” Declares Kim Mcdowell Rainagel, and she should know. At fifty, she has place in three bodybuilding championships including a National competition in Pittsburg last August. “The beliefs we have about aging are all in our minds. Let go of those thoughts and focus on the steps it will take for you to become the best YOU.” When her two grown boys left home, Kim had a decision to make about the next phase of her life, but when her husband suggested she train for a bodybuilding competition, the idea terrified her. “Up on stage in a tiny bikini and heels? That was way outside my comfort zone!” Which is exactly why she did it. “I’m going with the choice that scares me most, because that’s the one that’s going to help me grow the most.” She had worked out her entire life, but training for a competition was an entirely new thing. She attended the San Antonio Classic, and something clicked. “I can do this,” she thought. “I can give it a try.” Her goal? “Not to fall down or die.” Considering she placed in the top five and qualified for nationals, I’d say mission accomplished. She accomplished another goal a few months ago when American Curves Magazine flew her out to California for a three-day modeling shoot. At first, she wondered if she should even

Or so she thought! With her husband and sons on location with her while she fulfilled a lifelong dream of being a published model, Kim felt that her life had come full circle. “Nothing happens in the comfort zone,” she believes. “I have found confidence I never knew existed. I guess I always had it, but I never owned it.” Now, it’s important to her to show her sons they have a courageous, competitive mom who never backs down from a challenge. Kim hopes to share that courage with other women, too. She makes a point of saying hello and smiling when she works out at the gym, providing an opening for other women to approach her and ask questions. “So many women are competitive with each other,” she says. “They don’t understand that we need to lift each other up. We’re all in this together.” She firmly believes that fitness and nutrition aren’t just important in training for a competition; they need to be part of a lifestyle. “It’s never too late to get out of your comfort zone, to change your body, your lifestyle, to achieve that goal you thought you never could.”

I have been honored to personal train some amazing women in my 26 -plus years in the fitness world. One queson I always ask is what two areas they most want to see change on their body. I’m always surprised by the answers. As an IFBB Pro Physique Competor I’ve learned to have an eye for symmetry so when a woman with a great asset complains about a part of her body I see as her least to worry about it really makes me want to evaluate where that mindset originated from.

ironic part is being an IFBB Pro Physique competor I could only wish my legs were bigger! The one area I hear most from women with children is they wish they could rid themselves of or “fix” their stretch marks on their stomach from child birth. The first me a woman turned in progress pictures (as I require) for personal training and complained immediately how much she can’t stand the “mark’s” across her stomach I was taken back. Moms Turning to Lifts in Increasing Numbers SA MONTHLY MAGAZINE

Andrea L. Algar Health & Welness Editor Date: February 7, 2018 Breast Lift surgeries appear to be on the rise in San Antonio as women, particularly moms, seek to maintain their pre-baby bodies and more youthful appearance. For decades women have turned to non-surgical solutions that promised tightening, lift or an increase in size. They still exist today and include an overwhelming array of bras, sleepwear, pads, straps, creams, lotions, gels, exercise programs and trendy fads such as the Laser Breast Lift, “Botox Boob Job” and “Vampire Breast 112 that promise miraculous results. Most women who Lift” have tried them have been sadly disappointed and eventually turn to surgical breast lift or a try at one of the newer non-surgical technologies including radio frequency breast tightening. Many women needing a lift turn to Breast Augmentation as the go-to procedure because it has become so accepted and commonplace. Most are shocked and disappointed to learn that augmentation was not advised by the plastic

surgeon. San Antonio plastic surgeon Dr. Robert N. Young states, “It can be devastating for a woman coming in for a consultation about Breast Augmentation to learn that she may not be a good candidate because of sagging breasts. Everyone would love to achieve the ideal breast shape and size without having to have a lift, but at the same time, no one wants to be disappointed with something that doesn’t work. Performing a Breast Augmentation on a woman with sagging breasts will just create much larger sagging breasts and she won’t be happy with the results.” It is natural for women to want breasts which appear more youthful, firm and perky. Breast Lifts are most often recommended for women who have lost significant weight, had children, breastfed, gone braless, have large breasts, have genetically droopy breasts or whose breasts have simply aged. Clothes fit better and women feel more secure and confident. The benefits of Breast Lift surgery are that the results are instant and can last many years. Traditional Breast Lift surgery, called Mastopexy, typically

involves removal of excess skin which is pulled together and sutured. This process tightens the breast, raising and lifting the breast at the same time, correcting breast deflation, sagging, size, shape, asymmetry and irregularities as well as stretched or sagging nipples. There are several types of Breast Lift which may be available depending upon the amount of breast sagging, nipple position and skin laxity. A skilled plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgeries can quickly guide you through the options and select those which are most appropriate for the individual patient. The following are the most popular options for Breast Lift: Full Breast Lift - incisions resemble an anchor and go around the areola, vertically down to the natural breast fold, with incisions that extend horizontally along the breast crease on both sides. It is recommended for women

with significant sagging or to reduce the size of the breast SA MONTHLY and allows for the most dramatic reshaping, tightening and MAGAZINE lifting. While it has the most visible scars, they fade well over in about a year. Vertical Lift – Incisions go around the areola and vertically down to the natural breast fold, creating what some call a “lollipop incision”. This lift tightens the breast with a moderate amount of lift and is good for reshaping the entire breast. Moderate scars are easily hidden.

when more upper poll fullness is needed with a lift, and I offer ThermiBreast, a radio frequency procedure, for women who are good candidates. ThermiBreast is best for women with mild ptosis and can create about 1 inch of lifting. Most women need more lift than this.”

113

Donut Lift – Incisions are made all the way around the areola. Also a minimal lift designed to help mild sagging. It can be combined with breast augmentation, areola reduction or nipple asymmetry. Scars are well-hidden and become unnoticeable. Crescent Wedge Lift – Incisions are made around the top of the areola only. This is a minimal breast lift which is designed to help minimal breast sagging. It can combined with breast augmentation. Scars are well-hidden and once healed are often unnoticeable. The primary fear of women considering Breast Lift is the scarring. While scars can be quite noticeable immediately following surgery, they diminish over the first year, often to a point where they are not as noticeable. Newer technologies in healing including the use of silicone gel sheets and scar gels, while somewhat costly, can help scars heal faster. Newer technologies such as laser, radiofrequency, fat transfer, stem cell and even Botox are being publicized as quick and easy alternatives to breast lift….but do they work? Dr. Young explains, “The majority of my patients have traditional breast lift, but I also offer fat transfer

New methods are being introduced all the time, and have been for many years. Over the years many new surgical procedures have been tried to improve breast lift including “internal bras” which are slings made from tissue or mesh. Anchoring the breast from above, and other methods have not been terribly effective and more time will be needed to analyze the long term effectiveness and even the safety of these fads. Dr. Young summarizes it by stating, “Simply put, none of the non-surgical techniques can rival results of breast lift surgery in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon.” Contact: Andrea L. MINDFUL LIVING 116

A trending conversation lately has been oriented around the framework of mindfulness. Many leadership summits are parading about meditation and its benefits for improving performance, many magazines and media segments are raving about the lullaby of yoga for our mind and body, and how trendy has the word self care become? The disconnect lives when we try to align our expression of these things with what we perceive is best accepted, what social media emulates, and maybe even influenced by the feedback of our others. Because mindfulness lives on the ground of experience, we have to accept that what is cozy for you may not be cozy for me. The Art of Mindful Living understands the different, individual chemistry we are as unique humans. Detailed and different, yet sharing the same spiritual story.

Meditation is a power tool for building empathy, shared compassion and the ability to see the bigger picture. When we rewire the brain through mindful practices, by default we begin to comprehend in abundance, we heal the wounds of comparison, see beyond judgement and overcome the plague of not feeling good enough. Furthermore, how often do we give our power away by pretending that circumstances define us rather than refine us? The Art of Mindful Living luxuriates in the details, unattached presence, and the trust that this moment is enough, as it is. Of course it may seem easy, or maybe second nature, for a yoga teacher to melt into the ‘present’ moment. But I suggest it is practice and the courage to navigate the human in you.

SA MONTHLY MAGAZINE

AND HERE ARE FOUR TIPS TO INDULGE IN THE ART OF MINDFUL LIVING. 1. Get your sleep The health benefits of sleep cannot be denied. Depriving the body of sleep is the quickest way to build frustration, lagged thinking, weakened immune functioning, and deteriorate physically (skin, bones, muscles, hair, vision, etc). Sounds dramatic, but it is the truth. When we protect our sleep we revitalize our autonomy to function effectively. We begin to cultivate clarity which is the foundation to confidence. Create space for at least seven hours a night, more is better. Rest. Reset. Revive. 2. Nurture Creativity Every human being has the capacity to create. Simply the way we organize our homes, choose our clothing, the patterns of our movement. You are walking art. You are the poem. Discover ways you can be present with your expression. Comparison destroys creativity. Detox from social media and things that cause you to feel disempowered in your creativity. Ground into what you love, what catches your eye, what catches your heart. Creativity doesn't have to be made, but lived. 3.Move When we become sedentary and neglect the value of movement- our thoughts become stuck, our body and spirit aches. We derail quality of life and vital energy to show up as the best version of ourselves. Your body NEEDS movement. The structures rely on one another for nutrients, circulation, and blood flow.

117

SA MONTHLY MAGAZINE

Find ways throughout the day to move- whether it is a solid regimen or a sweet self care practice of self massage. Maybe its stretching randomly throughout the day. Whatever feels good for you. There is no right or wrong way to move, give yourself permission to befriend your body- obviously at MelMarie Yoga we are advocates for the multifaceted approach of yoga for holistic wellbeing and recovery. Need somewhere to start? Give us a call. 4. Sanctuary Your environment influences the condition of your thoughts, the essence of how you feel and whether you feel joy or not. Our environment can be a prison of obligation or intentionally designed to nourish and feed your soul. Realize the power you have in your home to integrate intention and nourishing moods to enlighten your spirit and reflect your intention. And if you cannot control the physical climate of your environment, see your body as your sanctuary. Treat it with kindness. Decorate your temple with intention by being deliberate on why you conduct yourself the way you do, the accessories you wear, and the expression you carry. Be a welcoming beacon and transcend the environment into what is most nourishing for you. The greatest sources of insight you will ever experience are right there, inside of you, right now. Jennifer McCarville Founder/Director Marvelously Made School Jennifer McCarville is in the business of changing the world. As the director of the highly lauded, Marvelously Made School, Jennifer is not only shaping future generations, but she is changing the hearts and minds of their parents. With a degree in early childhood education, Jennifer has taught for more than 25 years at some of the top-rated schools in the city. But with each path she took in education she realized that too much was being done to children, and not enough was done for them. In 2010 Jennifer was given the chance to revolutionize early childhood education. She started Marvelously Made Preschool in the Helotes Hills United Methodist Church, where she was given the freedom to create a program that was designed to honor children. The school was established as a 501(c)3 non-profit because as Jennifer said, schools should be for children. Not for profits As her vision for the school grew beyond the preschool level, Jennifer sought to expand. And in 2015, using donations and

money out of her own pocket, Jennifer took a leap of faith and secured a little cottage on a corner in Old Town Helotes. With the unwavering support of her partners, Allison Poole and Kim Stallman, the Marvelously Made School was born. These three women were able to realize a dream that had been in the works for more than 26 years. Marvelously Made School now serves children ages 3 to 1st grade. And with expansive outdoor classrooms, student gardens, unlimited access to art supplies, and even a school chicken coop, the enrichment that children and families get at Marvelously Made is unmatched anywhere else. I am so humbled and overwhelmed when parents tell me I have changed the way they look at parenting, Jennifer said. The children have always been our first priority. And once we had that down we were able to start working to empower the parents. Rather than forcing children into arbitrary boxes of traced letters and drilled flashcards, Marvelously Made gives children the space and environment to grow and absorb real skills and develop a love of learning. Worksheets are just receipts for parents. They don’t actually measure what your child knows Jennifer said. There is a real difference between regurgitating and actually learning. Jennifer said they are working to change the conversation about childhood education. Study after study has shown that the biggest piece of development for children up to age 8 is their social and emotional development. Without that, there is nothing else. Math and reading are important skills that will come, but the most important work that we’re missing as a society is helping these whole people develop into a part of a community, she said. When tragedy strikes, and we try to find where we might be going wrong, Jennifer believes the key lies in the tiny hands and hearts of our children. And that’s why this woman is in the business of changing the world of education, one mind at a time.

Allyson Byrd—Progressive, Provocative & Profit Boosting By: Desiree H. Serna Allyson Byrd is known for helping entrepreneurs turn their business into cash machines, earning her title as the “profit accelerator.” Byrd’s coaching approach is unconventional—to say the least— giving candid truths, provocative allegories and motivating moments to guide the entrepreneur to become an industry leader. “I’ve become more provocative and edgy in my approach to consulting entrepreneurs.” Byrd says. “Entrepreneurs want two things: freedom and money, yet most don’t have this,” she explains. “I give an unapologetic truth on how to have the confidence to market, gain contracts and distinguish their service or products.” Byrd does not shy away from telling the raw truth about her journey to entrepreneurship and empire of Money Movers International. “Money Movers International was built on two things: ambition and air,” says Byrd. “I started my business with a drive and a passion for something great.” However, within eight months Byrd found herself on food stamps

and scraping for pennies to make ends meet. Going back to the drawing board, she revamped her business strategy, read MBA for Dummies, and mapped out a plan that would more than double her monthly income. Byrd explains her inner-dialogue about “money making”: “A lot of people try to build their business without being a money maker. I knew I needed $5,000 to cover my monthly amount. I said if I could make $5,000 in a month I will be good, but then I said what if I can make it in a half a month. Then I said what if I can do it in one day. Then finally I challenged myself to $5,000 an hour and then I did more than that and I did $38,000 in an hour. That’s when I created my five-week plan and took my same 30-day activities and compressed them and put them into my 133 one-week activities so that I can make more money.” As Founder and Chief Sales Officer of Money Movers International, Byrd is a popularly known speaker, best-selling author and coach who teaches other entrepreneurs how to skyrocket their company profits. Celebrated as one of the world’s most trusted leadership advisors and sales experts for entrepreneurs and small business owners, Byrd and her team of masterful facilitators, have coached over 3000 entrepreneurial leaders to create over 105 million dollars in NEW revenue in the past 8-years. Byrd shared some exciting news for virtual business and business-curious communities… “I’m an innovator for entrepreneurs on the rise,” Byrd explains, “so I’m working on a free livestream scheduled for March 8th.” “I’m inviting those interested in taking their business to the next level and accelerating their profit to a livestream discussion with an exclusive Q&A session,” Byrd invites. “Those of you subscribed to my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will get exclusive access to this informative session,” she informs. The livestream will include an intentional live audience with an Q&A opportunity for audience and those livestreaming. Would you know what to do if you lost your job? Tips to help you prepare for an unexpected career crisis. We all know how important it is to be prepared for a fire, flood, or other type of emergency. What about something that seems less dramatic, but can be equally devastating, like unemployment? You can’t dial 911 or stop, drop, and roll, but you can take steps to help minimize some of the fallout from losing your job. 1. Stay positive. It’s important to remember that the decision was probably based on the economy or other external factors.

2. Be professional. If you handle yourself with decorum, your employer may be willing to serve as a reference, recommend you to vendors, and even provide assistance with interviewing and résumé building. Plus, if their economic situation continues to improve, who’s to say they won’t hire you back?

134

3. Account for every penny. Review your terms of employment and claim any money owed to you from bonuses, commissions—even unused vacation. Also, find out if you are entitled to a severance package. If not, file for unemployment benefits right away since it may take weeks to process. 4. Replace lost benefits. If your spouse works, see if you can add yourself to his or her health care plan. If not, you can apply for COBRA coverage within 60 days of termination and extend your health care benefits for 18 months. Similarly, you may want to purchase an affordable term life insurance policy to help replace any workplace coverage you may have had. 5. Evaluate your retirement plans. While some employers allow you to leave your 401(k) in place, it may not always be the right move. Have a financial professional look the plan over and see if you are better off rolling over the funds into a traditional IRA or Roth IRA.1 6. Network-Network-Network. You never know where your next job will come from, so take advantage of every networking opportunity. Also, be sure to use social media plat forms like LinkedIn to help connect with people online and let them know you’re looking. This educational third-party article is being provided for information purposes only as a courtesy by Gerardo “J.J.” Ramirez Jr., Senior Partner, New York Life Insurance Company. To learn more about the life insurance and financial strategies, please contact J.J. Ramirez at 830-832-3491 or gramirez@ft.newyorklife.com. 1 When considering rolling over the proceeds of your employer-sponsored retirement plan to an IRA, you have the option, among others, of leaving the funds in your existing plan, if permitted, or rolling them into your new employer’s plan, if one is available and rollovers are permitted. Each choice offers advantages and disadvantages, depending on the desired investment options and services, fees and expenses, withdrawal options, required minimum distributions, tax treatment, and your unique financial needs and retirement plans. While he was away in 140 the military, one of the biggest sources of comfort was a fresh cup of coffee, so after his time in the service was up, Randy learned to roast his own beans, and he started his own coffee company called Airborne Beans. While Airborne began as a small side venture, its focus quickly shifted just two months after its launch with the birth of Randy’s son, Nikolas. Just one month after Randy’s wife Nina gave birth to their first child, the Airborne family was hit with devastating news. Nina was diagnosed with a rare but aggressive bile duct cancer, and prognosis was grim. Randy was not only taking on the sleepless nights caring for their newborn, but he was also trying his best to care for the love of his life in the midst of her chemotherapy. The coffee that was once a nice pick-me-up, was now a way to offset the soaring medical expenses that came along with fighting to keep Nina alive. Now just a little more than a year after her diagnosis, Nina continues to battle cholangiocarcinoma with weekly trips to M.D. Anderson in Houston, and the family intends to use their platform with Airborne Beans as a way to raise awareness about this severely under-researched form of cancer. In November, Nina celebrated the one year anniversary of the day she had two thirds of her liver removed and began her cancer treatment. Nikolas is now 16 months old, and Nina said she feels lucky every day that she got to celebrate his first birthday.

The couple now donates $1 from every bag of The Ninanator to The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation in the hope that they’ll find a cure. All the beans are sustainably sourced from small organic farmers across the globe, and they’re roasted right here in San Antonio. The amazing love story behind this coffee for a cause makes it the perfect heartwarming gift for Valentines Day.
