By Jeremy Ross Her eyes may have been shrink-wrapped in tears, but her purpose was as clear as the windows lining the Bexar County Courthouse. Lucy Adame-Clark sat in her office talking about the life-long struggles of her family and her sister. Her voice, at times, wavering, but her resolve was not. “I know what it’s like to grow up with a sister who is disabled. My sister is minor MR and autistic. My parents, a marriage of 54 years, care for her – adults looking after an adult — but growing up, there were no advocates for her or the underserved,” said Adame-Clark. Her father, a former marine, and her mother, an activist. She is the child of migrant workers, one-time tenants of the oldest projects in San Antonio, Texas. She wanted desperately to change that. Working as the County Clerk

is more than a job for her. It’s her passion and calling that began decades ago. “I was told you would not amount to anything [as a child] because of the area I grew up in. In the community there, people didn’t look at you as a regular person. You were a second-class citizen … a nobody. County and community workers, when I was growing up, would say they don't expect you to be successful. We heard it many times, and the reality was you made it, or you didn't make it out. I really wanted to, not only for me, but for my siblings, also. I really wanted to make it out to prove to the next generation it's only a temporary situation,” said Adame-Clark. She attended Southern Careers Institute where she focused on Paralegal studies, but to do that, she had to focus on making ends meet. “I was a waitress while I was going to school. I did little mom-and-pop jobs. I worked at 'Jack

In The Box.' You have to learn a little bit of everything to understand where you're going.” Her hard work and learning transitioned into a law enforcement career in 1997. She joined the Sheriff’s Office, where she was eventually promoted to the Criminal Investigation Division as a Forensic Latent Print Examiner working with high-profile cases throughout the county and state. Her career there spanned more than two decades. Throughout her career with the Sheriff’s Office, she continued receiving several continuing education certificates. Her public service, however, didn’t stop there. In 2019, she was elected to her current position -- Bexar County Clerk, accomplishing a goal set as a child – the same child who was told “would not amount to anything.” “I knew I wanted to be a leader and make a difference, and that's exactly what we're doing now. I'm 49 years old,

and I love it. You know, I'm at the place where I thought I would be at my age. The past is the past, and I continue looking forward to making sure what God has planned for me is there … but it's up to me to get there,” said AdameClark. When she was sworn in, however, it didn’t just change the placards in the courthouse or the text on a website – It changed history. “Becoming the first Latina elected as Clerk speaks to other Latinos in the community. It sets a good and powerful example. There’s never been a Latino or Latina in this office. There’s also never been a woman. That’s an accomplishment. That’s something to be proud of, and for me, that’s huge. It’s an accomplishment and a reminder that no matter where you come from, no matter what you've been through, you can accomplish so much, as long as you keep looking forward,” said Adame-Clark.

Being part of two firsts, the first Latina and the first woman to hold her office, allows her to swell with pride. When asked if one milestone is more important than the other, the County Clerk said, “I think the woman part means more than the other, because my background is 50% Native American. My identity as a woman involves the mindsets and responsibilities of motherhood, being a sister, and bringing that identity into county leadership is crucial. Women are strong and independent, and able to create, innovate and implement new ways of governing. Being the first woman is something I’m most proud of, and I hope others can appreciate it, as well. While new barriers were broken in her office when entering her new job, she found barriers in bringing it into the present. For instance, if you wanted to pay for services, there weren't many options. Adame-Clark added, “No credit cards …Come on. So, we

implemented credit cards right away.” The first Latina clerk also found her office didn’t cater to a significant portion of the population it served, “There was nothing in Spanish, no documents in Spanish, so we had a meeting, and I said, ‘Let's go a step further. Let's make our services available in 51 languages. We have diverse communities from all over, and they need our services,’” said Adame-Clark. Changes in policies and services include tools for the hearing impaired, community outreach programs for veterans, a mobile-friendly website, services available electronically, and an 18.5 million dollar document preservation project protecting historical records dating back to 1699. Her program on-the-go, to serve the underserved in the county, is arguably what she’s most proud of. It's a kind of

records van on-the-go that would prove especially valuable during the pandemic. “The mobile unit would head to poor communities. It would also serve veterans. It was ready in October of 2019 before COVID happened, and it would help families desperately in need. People were losing their jobs, losing their loved ones, and our county government was there to help them get identification, documents for life, or business supporting loans, critical services and death certificates in a time when some were afraid to go inside our courthouse. We ran towards the pandemic because we were needed, and that was our job,” said Adame-Clark.

The act of bringing services to those in need during the health crisis gave her and her office a heightened sense of purpose. The program eventually earned her office an award and recognition at local, State and the National level in Washington, D.C. That includes an International Innovator Award from IGO, International Association of Government Officials in New York. Adame-Clark serves as the Bexar County Treasurer and is a member of the Bexar County Bail Bond Board and Chairwoman of the Records Management Committee. Keep an eye out for this rising star! She is making history and serving the people of Bexar County in many new and successful ways!

Carbon Copy Hippies Are True Originals

What do the Beatles, Neil Young and The Grateful Dead have in common? If you ask Sam Hodgson and Bryce Menchaca, they will tell you those bands influenced their taste in music and influenced the music they create. Sam and Bryce have been playing guitar together and writing music since they were 14 years’ old. Now both in college (Sam is a sophomore at Texas A & M and Bryce is a junior at The University of Colorado at Denver), the boys have released 3 albums under the band name of Carbon Copy Hippies. They can be seen playing around town and are currently negotiating a record deal, which has exceeded their dreams!

When asked about their musical passion, they chimed in together to say, “It is one of the only true voices we can have in the world; creation and development that is expressed in a way that only the musician can vocalize, and a cohesion among artists that can only be expressed through music. Carbon Copy Hippies Can be heard on any streaming source and, if their hard work has anything to do with it, on a stage near you! You can check them out here! https://youtu.be/axNTtYJ5uA0

San Antonio's Untapped Talent

San Antonio is home to many of the most incredibly talented creatives in Texas. Everything from musicians, dancers, visual arts, and actors, to culinary chefs and designers can be found right there in the heart of Texas. In this series I will be front and center, giving readers a unique opportunity to peer inside the worlds of these fantastic creatives, giving readers exclusive views and perspectives on what San Antonio Art Culture has to offer the world. There is a new independent music collective in town, and it is taking the city with a wave of performances that leave audiences wanting more. The Elevated Peoples Collective consists of 12 creatives with skills that span from musicians, singers, poets, writers, IT, visual artists, and public speakers. Having taken advantage of the wealth of global talent our military-friendly city provides, the core of the collective are military veterans (ARMY and Air Force). Upon the global impact of COVID-19 on the music industry, many artists in the city were left with no available opportunities to gig, leaving ample time for creatives to work on new material and network in a major way. These 12 creatives took advantage of the time and used it to create a series of popular music, poetry, and monthly events. The Collective includes the following creator: Maria Frias (marketing/consulting/artists development), MC² & The S.O.U.L. (hip-hop and soul music band), Dfoy Music (musician), Xenobia (jazz-fusion band), Ponciano Seoane (musician), Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson (Poet Laureate of San Antonio, writer/ musician), Sacred Fantasy (writer/ poet/ musician), Erick Nkana (visual artists/poet), and Miguel G. (designer/ marketing). The Hyer Collective Media Company, run by Frias, collaborated with Elevated Peoples to have a Retro -90s style photoshoot this summer at the Essex Outdoor Gallery, home to one of San Antonio’s most exclusive music and art

festivals, The Essex Fest. The photoshoot will be followed up with a brief introduction and profile on five of the members of the collective. Q&A Maria - Creative Director/Owner of The Hyer Collective Media Group ‘Maria Maria’ aka Maria Frias, 33, owner of The Hyer Collective Media Group. Born and raised in Silicon Valley, California, she moved to San Antonio as a kid to military parents. Her father was stationed on Lackland Airforce base in 2003. "I’m a Creative Director at heart and have always enjoyed Fashion, Art, Music and Entertainment," said Frias. "As a child I’d color, paint, and absolutely enjoyed DIY projects. Collaborating with other creatives that inspire me and get my juices flowing is all I need to get a great project started." A well rounded Creative Director who has been in business for over 10 years, Frias has recently started a media company, The Hyer Collective Media Group, which offers Branding/Designing, Art Direction, Content Creation, Media Production, Product Development, and Digital Strategy services. "I’ve taken my personal testimony on finding my biological family using the power of Social Media and started my digital journey," said Frias. "I’ve educated myself through trial and error, including digital master courses, partnering with other professionals in the industry, and diligent research on Youtube. The trendy art director seeks to reach more young entrepreneurs, anyone who has a brand, startup, corporate and or non-profit. "Submerging myself in a growing city like San Antonio, I’ve seen so many creatives who have not yet received proper recognition in their respected field," Frias said. "My mission is to add newer talent to our cities creative

list by using my platform to provide a space that unveils all of the untapped artists and creatives who have not yet been recognized." Ashton – Drummer/Producer Ashton Spencer Holmes Leverett, 22, a renowned drummer from San Antonio, TX, moved to the city at two. “My father was serving in the military,” said Leverett. “Towards the end of his career, we had gotten moved here. Since then, I’ve grown up in San Antonian. No city like home!” A professional drummer and producer, after graduating high school, Leverette received a certification in audio production and began gigging across Texas, and the U.S. His big break came in 2017 when he was invited to play drums on America's Got Talent and personally addressed by Alecia Keys. “I like to think of myself as a human-drum-machine,” said Leverette. “I take all styles that I’m familiar with and emulate samples and drum breaks to give the band an old school approach to the hip hop sound our fans love. I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember and a producer for about five years. Lately, I’ve been delving into the world of songwriting and being an artist. My creative purpose is to inspire people to live beyond their box and to freely break into their artistic expressions. Keith – Emcee/Poet/Screenwriter Keith 'Smeazy' Passmore, 34, is one-half of the hip-hop and soul duo MC². Born in Newark, NJ he was Raised in Raleigh, NC and has lived in San Antonio for seven years. “Originally the military brought me to the city,” said Passmore. “I just decided to stay to be closer to my daughter and to freely pursue music. I enjoy

creating, writing, and arranging music. Hip-hop has always been my biggest passion.” Passmore, a Physical Therapist Assistant, got his first-hand experience with script writing in 2020, during the creation of MC²’s third studio album, The Space Tape. He is also currently learning drums and keys. “I think it's my creativity and imagination that is unique," said Passmore. "Lyrically I'm always thinking of new ways or words to rhyme with. It's been almost 19 years since I first got my start making beats in middle school. Eventually that would lead me to writing and I found I was a much better lyricist than a beat maker." "When it comes to music, it's really about making songs that not only sound good but are also relatable and feel good. Making music that provokes thought and dialogue that many current hip-hop artists seemingly shy away from.” “I would say our audience would be any and everybody. Aside from showing lyrical prowess, we make music for the people. We try to create songs that are relevant, which addresses our society, and speaks to (and about) the world around us, touching on just about every aspect of life – things we all go through.” “As far as Hip-hop and Soul Music, this city is being slept on,” said the emcee. “We seek to help link this city with the vibrant music world we came from, bringing many of the experiences and culture from the east coast right to the heart of Texas. We tend to think of Houston, Austin, or Dallas as music hubs in Texas, this collective will change that.”

Sacred – Vocalists/Writer/Poet

Kelli “Sacred Fantasy” McEwen, 28, from Harvey, IL, has lived in San Antonio since Sept of 2017. “Artistically I explore many avenues of self-expression such as poetry,” said McEwen. “Writing, playing the keyboard, crocheting, painting, creating music, graphic designing, crafting holistic skincare products & much more! I am poetry! Professionally I own a lavish day spa called Divinity Massage & Oasis Spa. Which will soon be S.A. favorite hideaway retreat! We offer services such as massages, facials, waxing, energy work, body treatments, and sound therapy.” A published author, McEwen’s first book of poetry entitled Blessings in Disguise brought her into the San Antonio literary limelight. She is currently finishing a second book of poetry entitled All of the Things I Didn’t Want to Write About! She will also release a musical and spoken word LP this year. “My process isn’t necessarily complex or lackluster, I simply create. Basically put, no one can do what I do even if I give them the blueprint. My thoughts and my style are my own. Even I do not know what’s going to manifest when I start writing or freestyling. I allow myself to leak on each project organically without subscribing to a genre.” “I’ve been a creator all of my life. The very moment I held a pen I never wanted to let it go! It was for me, undeniably! The purpose behind Sacred Fantasy is to allow others as well as myself to embrace their duality.” The young writer explains that her name is the core behind her most significant personal, artistic, and professional triumphs. “Sacred is a divine, composed and complex source of light that moves without care of being seen – she’s shy and coy.” said McEwen. “While Fantasy

is the life of the party, witty, has a sharp tongue, flirty, outgoing, and lively. Sacred Fantasy teaches her viewers how to embrace all sides of who we are while still maintaining balance through self-love.” For more information of the Hyer Collective Media Company please visit: www.TheHyerCollectiveMediaGroup.com TheHyerCollectiveMediaGroup@gmail.com For more information on the Elevated Peoples Collective please visit www.mc2vibes.com/ElevatedPeoples Q. Head Trainer at Five Fitness Group F45 Deerfield San Antonio Instagram: @ericareneeft Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/erica.garcia.9883 LinkedIn: Erica Rodriguez Head Trainer at Five Fitness Group F45 Deerfield Training/Certified Personal Trainer/Sports Nutritionist

Why did you decide to become a fitness trainer?

As a passionate individual, I am committed to going above and beyond for my clients. With over 17 years of client service experience, my goal is to create an experience like none other. I'm the Head Trainer at Five Fit F45 Deerfield and absolutely love what I do. I manage a team of trainers and together we strive to bring the best workout experience in SA. I enjoy working closely with my clients to achieve their health and fitness goals. Whether in Personal Training or Group Exercise, my passion is to help others achieve their goals while creating a supportive environment full of energy and motivation. I train with a strong focus on functional fitness for better flexibility, strength, endurance, and agility.

Fitness has been a passion of mine for many years. I grew up very active, always involved in cheer, dance or sports. I decided to become a fitness trainer back in 2013 while planning my wedding, I started my E3 Fitness group training. It was the stress reliever I needed, and I knew right away fitness would be a part of my life forever. Watching the transformations not just physically; but mentally, was so fulfilling to me. Working daily with my clients to achieve their goals gives me a sense of true purpose. I love to make a positive difference in people’s lives. The positive energy is contagious! Not only will you feel a strong sense of satisfaction through the fruits of your labor, but you feel a huge sense of job satisfaction being

instrumental in the success of each client you work with. Their journey is my journey! Prior to working in the Fitness Industry, I worked in IT for 11 years. After having my daughter in 2017 I realized this was not what I truly wanted to do and took that time as an opportunity to stay home with her for two years. Once she was ready for school, that was my queue to get to work on my true passion. Helping others through fitness! Best decision ever made, and I haven’t looked back since. More time with my daughter while following my passion? Sign me up! Are you CPR-certified? What other certifications do you hold?

Yes, I am CPR/AED certified. I also have a Certified Personal Trainer certification with The American Council of Exercise and am currently studying for my Sports Nutritionist certification with The International Sports Science Association. Later this year I plan to get certified in Exercise Therapy and continue to learn and grow throughout my career. Continuing education has always been important to me and building my knowledge base will help me better assist my clients. Do you have fitness goals for yourself? If so, what are they? Absolutely! Rule #1 Stay Consistent and in it for the long

run. Each week I make a realistic training schedule and try by absolute best to stick to it. I’ve found that the following a routine works best for me and it has allowed me to continue seeing results and progress. I ensure to build that “me” time into my day. I typically take a look at my weekly schedule on a Sunday and strategize my workouts and meals for the week ahead. My goals all tie into themselves which may them easy for me. At this point in my fitness journey, I’m in the maintain phase so diet is extremely key for me. It’s all about balance. My goal is to balance the discipline with a little fun sprinkled through. If I want the cookie, I’ll eat it, but I’ll ensure it’s a few and not the entire row. H20 is also part of my daily goals. I aim to drink a gallon a day and reach 15-20K steps on most days when I train at the studio. For me, setting small daily goals keeps me motivated and eager to start the next day with a fresh perspective. How did you get started in this business? It all started back in 2013. I was running my own Group Fitness classes in my garage gym, E3 Fitness after my 8-5 in IT. At this time fitness was just a hobby and something I did before work, after work and on the weekends.

I trained 10-15 women per class and ran three afternoon classes a day. On weekends I’d set up at different High School tracks and would host weekend bootcamps and at times raise money for different charities across SA. I loved every minute of it, I knew then Fitness was where I wanted to be. I had a true passion to help others stay active and healthy, and live longer lives. Fast forward to 2017, when I went back to the office after 4 months of paternity leave. The excitement of traveling for work faded and the work life balance no longer existed. The demand was just too overwhelming and quite frankly, not worth the time away from my baby. It was time to make the tough decision to leave my career after 11 long years and focus solely on my daughter. Two years later she was ready for daycare and Mommy was ready to get back to what she loved! Fitness!! Today I teach anywhere from 15- 20 classes a week and will start my 1:1 training in July. It’s certainly been a great journey and I’m just getting started. What group classes have you taught? In your group classes, can you explain how you accommodate varying skill and fitness levels?

I’ve taught a variety of group classes. From women only in my E3 Fitness garage gym, to group fitness training with Five Fit F45. What I love about Five Fit F45 is that regardless of your fitness level or age it’s for everyone. We have trainers who are experienced in corrective exercise and ready to accommodate with modifications or progressions where needed. As the Head Trainer, it is my responsibility to ensure every member is comfortable and feels safe during our classes. I train a 73-year-old lady 5 days a week. Each day she comes in we prepare each station with the lighter weights or a variety of options so she can focus on her workout while we ensure she stays safe. Members and clients really appreciate the group training with a personal training aspect. It’s definitely a game changer for the fitness industry. What is your schedule for classes, and can you walk me through a class from start to finish? Our classes start at 5am and run through 630pm during the week, today we have eight classes per day. Mon, Wed, & Fridays are cardio days Tues, Thursday and Sunday are

resistance training days and Saturdays are Hybrid days which is a mix of both. Each class is 45 minutes and at the client’s pace. The great thing about F45 is that we cater to all fitness levels! Not comfortable with the movement? We got you! There is a modification for everything! We welcome our members to come in, get comfortable, and that with the community before class begins. One their first day we have them complete a pre-screening form so we can get to know their fitness history and discuss any injuries they may have. This is a crucial part of the process. Safety first, always! Each class is equipped with two Certified trainers who are ready to modify or progress any movement where needed. Once class starts, the trainers each play a role in the class introduction. One trainer will lead the class and explain the workout, time schemes, number of sets and cue each movement for the workout. While the assisting trainer will demonstrate the movements, so each member has a clear understanding of the proper form of all movements. Prior to the workout starting members are taken through a 2-minute warm-up to get their blood flowing and heart ready. During each class, members rotate through different stations and perform specific exercises under the guidance

of our certified trainers. Trainers not only motivate the class, but they also watch for form corrections, modifications or progressions to ensure each member is both challenged and safe for the duration of the workout. It is the most fun 45 you will ever have while working out What do you tell clients who are looking for instant results? My advice? Trust the process. There is no such thing as instant results, otherwise everyone would be fit. It should go without saying that you have to have self-discipline if you expect results. Start by training your mind to create good habits. The best approach is to make small changes to your daily habits, and over time, you will notice all your bad habits have turned into good ones. Set realistic

goals and make a timeline for yourself. Make sure you set goals that are time bound, like “I will go to the studio for days a week”. Measurable goals are easier to track along your journey. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency!! Ask yourself how much time and energy do you want to invest in your training? Your success will depend on the answer. Ignore the short-term results and set realistic goals. If you commit to the long-term process, the results will come. Nothing worth fighting for comes easy, right? Fight for it! What is the most satisfying quality about your job? For me there are a couple of things that come to mind. First and foremost, the most is seeing my client’s progress. Watching them gain confidence, become stronger, take more reps, drop the pounds and just improve their overall

life. Pushing my clients to that next level of their fitness journey so that they don't plateau, while allowing them to continue to grow. Their success is my success! The fact that I get to wake up and push others to become their best version, has in turn made me become my best version both mentally and physically. How do you define success? I don't think Success can be defined in one sentence. Success to me means waking up every day putting your best foot forward, ready to give 150% even on the the bad days, not just for you but for everyone you are around. It’s constantly assessing whether or my clients are moving better, have more energy, are stronger and hitting their goals. I truly believe you will only succeed if you help others succeed. Watching them hit those milestones is so

fulfilling. Most of my mentors throughout my career in IT always taught me, successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Another’s success is my success If I had opportunity to encourage and motivate them along the way. When you strive to make a difference in other people’s lives, you will become more successful in life. The kindness you spread will eventually find its way back to you. It comes back full circle, and everyone is winning! That to me, is the definition of SUCCESS! What would you like your fitness business legacy to be? I would like to be remembered as a passionate and caring individual who always put my best foot forward. Caring is where it all starts, and caring will also get you up at 3am to train your clients. To be remembered as someone who truly made a difference in people’s lives and leaves behind something that can make the world a little brighter.

SA Health & Fitness† Medical series:†2021' Jennifer Hill Why did you choose nursing as a career? I remember when I was in college and my grandfather had passed away. I remember the nurses who were so compassionate and caring as we slowly watched him pass. I also recall the nurses who were not so caring and this is when I vowed to become one of the nurses who would make a difference and positively impact the lives of my patients. Was there a particular person in your life that drew you to the nursing profession? What do you find difficult about being a nurse? There comes a time in the career where you come to terms that you canít help everyone and you canít fix everyone. You can place all your efforts into someoneís care, but at the end of the day, the outcome is affected by multiple factors that are out of your control. Do you prefer to work alone, or as part of a team? I enjoy my profession as a psychiatric nurse practitioner

because of the one-on-one interaction I am able to have with my patients. I like the bond and rapport I am able to build with every session. I currently work in a private practice that allows me to have more time with my patients and I also have open communication with my attending physician and fellow nurse practitioners in the office. What do you contribute to your patients as a nurse? I like to think one of the best things I am able to offer a patient are open ears. I want patients to feel validated and heard. Sometimes being able to vent and have someone listen is therapeutic and medications are not needed. What interests you most about working in the nursing field ? I enjoy the flexibility of being a nurse and the bedside manners that I have developed while working in the field. The experience I have learned working on the floor has helped me transition to outpatient care and building therapeutic relationships with patients.

As a nurse, how do you handle stress on the job? I have learned to use the support I have around me, my husband, my colleagues, my family. I also exercise often which has been the most beneficial and my I also encouraged patients to do the same. I believe being physically healthy also helps maintain my emotional health. What do you find most rewarding about being a nurse? Seeing my patient get better is by the far the most rewarding. What approach do you take in communicating with people who do not know medical jargon? I think the best way to help someone to understand is to

teach them. The more the patient knows about their condition and the treatment options, the more confident they feel about the treatment plan. Talk about a time you worked in a fast-paced setting, how did you prioritize tasks while maintaining excellent patient care?† With a very ill patient who requires a lot of your time, How do you manage this patientís care while ensuring your other patients are adequately cared for?† Being a nurse, obviously you have felt overwhelmed with your work or patient-load at some point, what do you do to relieve this? Can you tell us a challenging situation or problem where you took the lead to correct it?

As a nurse, give an example of an important goal you have set for yourself. Did you accomplish that goal? How did you ensure that you accomplished it?† What is one nursing professional accomplishment that you are most proud of in your nursing career?† Have you ever felt dissatisfied with your work as a Nurse? If so, what did you do or did, to overcome that feeling? I think that anyone in the medical field has always wondered if there was more they could have done. There came a point in my career where I had to accept my limitations as a provider. We can help, but at the end of the day we can not fully control the outcome.

Have you ever went over and above your job requirements as a nurse? What do you find most difficult about being a Nurse? How do you overcome this difficulty?† What would be your number one advice to people looking to be in the nursing field?† What would you like your nursing legacy to be? For all my patients to know how much I truly care about their well being and how much I want them to succeed and to be happy.

Leo Paul Alaniz Biography How did you get started in this business? My journey of health and wellness started during high school. I had lost my father to cancer not too long before, which sparked a desire in me to improve my personal well-being, as well as share health/wellness with others. As time went on, my passion grew, as well as my empathy of working with each of my clients’ unique obstacles within their own health goals. What is your background?

specializes in teaching advanced pain relief and sports bodywork therapies. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and have been for over 10 years. I have worked with personal clients and programs creating fitness programs/ classes for individuals for over 13 years. I worked with companies as a guest speaker providing coaching on “healthy habits” to help reduce stress, plan for fitness, and work toward goals with the tools to make it a lifestyle. How do you keep Your fitness training knowledge up to date?

I have B.A.S. degree in Nutrition and Kinesiology from the University of Incarnate Word here in San Antonio. I am a Licensed Certified Nutritionist and Trainer.

I enjoy researching peer-reviewed data on sports journals, and also, go to new technique courses when the opportunities present themselves. If you love what you do, you are naturally going to spend time with it and grow in knowledge.

What other certifications do you have?

Do you have fitness goals for yourself?

I am a State Licensed Massage Therapy Instructor that

At this point in my life, my current fitness goal is the

Austin marathon in February 2022. I have a background in marathoning, then later transitioned into bodybuilding, road cycling, and HITT style training. My current goal is to just mix it up, so that I keep fitness fun and inspiring for me, which is the best way to keep it fun and motivating for the people that I work with. How important is nutrition to creating a client’s regimen? I always tell clients nutrition is 80% of the process. Learning more in-depth about the impact of healthy foods and the way they impact the body. Healthy eating habits are key to achieving physical goals, performance goals, and while maintaining great energy throughout the day. I always coach my clients to change one habit at a time toward a better lifestyle, rather than venturing all at once

into a restricted diet and setting yourself up for disappointment due to mental/physical fatigue. Imagine a client is discouraged during a training session. How do you keep that person motivated? When I can see a client getting discouraged, I always take time to re-establish their values and goals in conversation. What is your why for this change? What is your self-talk during the day, and is it pushing you toward your goal? I always remind people that this is a lifestyle change, and it takes time. Keep working on the habits and checking the boxes, and we will gradually see progress. What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business today?

1.) Helping clients overcome their limiting factors can be a challenge. I believe in practicing empathy and showing authentic understanding. I found that real trust is built when our clients get the sense that we are truly facing these challenges together. 2.) Set clear expectations with clients based off their verbal goals. Oftentimes, I have found, when I provide proper awareness of what their eating/workout schedule will look like, based off the goal they have described, I

often ask if that is realistic with their current family/work schedule? If not, we go back to the drawing board and find a middle ground that sets us both up for success. 3.) Due to the often “I want it now” mindset that surrounds health and fitness, it is so important to start re-educating the way our clients view their goals and on how the body functions. It won’t happen instantly or overnight, but we will definitely get there with the correct knowledge, understanding and tools!

Weight loss saboteurs There are a lot of things that can keep you from losing the weight you want. I mean, really, we could do a whole year-long course on what those things are. Many times, those things aren't what you think- it's not the exercise or the calorie counting, or right diet. It could be some underlying things you're not addressing. Here are 5 little-known weight loss saboteurs that could be keeping you from losing the weight you want. #1: STRESS Stress activates the fight-or-flight response (the body's involuntary response to a threat that makes your heart pound). The main hormone released during this response is the stress hormone, cortisol, boosts your insulin levels, which can cause you to pack on the pounds, especially around the midsection. Cortisol speeds up the aging process by breaking down collagen, suppresses the immune system, increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease, and interferes with serotonin leading to

depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The foods you choose can make it worse. Caffeine and sugar stimulate the nervous system increasing agitation, high-fat foods can cause digestion issues, and a diet void of nutrients doesn't supply the nutrients needed for the body to properly deal with stress. THE FIX: deal with your stress! Try things like deep breathing, mediation, getting outdoors, and getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. #2: FEEDING YOUR THIRST People oftentimes think theyíre hungry when in reality they just need some water! If youíre not sure whether youíre hungry or thirsty, assume itís the latter. Dehydration could be leading you to consume extra calories. THE FIX: Drink more water ALL day long! #3: MEDICATIONS Weight gain can often be a side effect of some medica-

tions. Medications that treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression, along with heart medications like beta-blockers, commonly cause weight gain.

THE FIX: If you have to choose a sweeter, choose something like Stevia, which doesn't have an effect on your blood sugar like artificial sweeteners.

THE FIX: Talk to your doctor about the side effects of any medications you're taking and some other ways you can counter the effects.

#5: TOXIC PRODUCTS IN YOUR HOME Toxic chemicals from common household cleaning agents, cosmetics, plastics and more are being stored in the fat tissues of your body fueling disease, slowing your metabolism, and adding up to unhealthy weight gain.

#4: ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS A huge mistake many people make is thinking that artificial sweeteners are the answer to satisfy sweet cravings with no impact on weight. Studies have shown that those who consume foods with artificial sweeteners have a 41% increased risk of becoming overweight or obese. Artificial sweeteners confuse the body's ability to recognize that it has had enough food and it causes more cravings for sweet food to make up for the calorie deficit. Artificial sweeteners can also cause havoc with your metabolism in the same way sugar does.

Chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), disrupt normal endocrine activity in the body. These hormone disruptors can effect you in many ways, including interfering with the activity of estrogens, androgens, and other hormones that regulate fat metabolism in the body. THE FIX: Choosing non-toxic items over toxic ones, choosing glass over plastic and metal, and move towards more natural cleaning products.

Let's face it summer means fun in the 'HOT' sun! By: Marianne Pinkston

Not gonna happen folks- time for a reality check.

Let's face it summer means fun in the sun! Bikinis and I personally lost 162 lbs in a year and 2 months bbq's, swimming, vacations kids are out of school, and as Olivia Newton John and John Travolta said, "ooooo those Summer Nights!"

Then like a needle scratches off the record and the

music comes to a stop I look in the mirror and think "I am not bikini ready!" Lol, what was I thinking. Did you gain the COVID 15 or even 30? Think about why you gained up and also think about the realistic expectations you have for getting that 15, 30 or more you want to lose off!

We as a society have lost our minds. Portion sizes

have quadrupled, our caloric intake too plus our stress is immense and self care non existent. Most people think I'll just exercise more but remember you can't out exercise a bad diet. These days we are all keto diet and instant gratification mode for results- "doctor just gives me that pill or shot and Iíll drop 40lbs in 2 months."

and that weight loss was after a decade of yo yo dieting and very unrealistic expectations. I don't want to rain on your 4th of July parade but we as a society need to wake up. The food industry needs to assist us and corporate America needs to stop the spread of misinformation and myth as to how we must change our world. As a weight loss doctor I don't have any major secrets to share with you and any doctor or clinic selling you a fast guaranteed weight loss plan is lying to you! If we had a solution I would have a mansion in Bali and make Oprah fame look infantile. My plan was not to discourage you from mastering the bikini body of your dreams but to discourage you from thinking there's a quick easy solution where you won't have to work your hardest, discipline yourself and stop eating whatever you want and snap your fingers thin.

My goal here is to raise awareness that you can do it but you still have to do it right. Your bikini body will be

next year folks and thatís if you start now.

As always I can be found online

Whatever you do. Start now. You are important to

Podcasted on iTunes and Spotify or YouTube.

those that love you and there's never been a better time than NOW!!!!! Fill your tool bag and find support and let someone who knows what they are really doing help you. Fix your diet!!!!!!! We need to teach the next generation the right way to lose weight and how to practice self care because their life spans are set to be shorter than ours. Thatís frightening!!! It's time for an obese nation to get with the plan!! I'm happy to help also. I want to be part of the solution. I am not the only specialist in town or doctor but Iím honored to help you.

Sunday afternoon 4pm on AM radio 930 KLUP. Drpbetterlife.com for links to shows or Pinkstonfamilypracticesa. com or call us at 210-698-7825. We take insurance and draw blood in office and have several great programs. And the doctor herself lost 162lbs. From 300lbs to now 138lbsit can be done!!!

Blonde Ambition This Seductive Dimension of cool and warm tones give this Blonde a newer effect with an Old Hollywood Feel. Variations of Hand-painting was used to create this Look. The Inspiration was Marilyn Monroe with today's twist on blonde hair. Cayley(model) was prepped with Oribe Tres Set Structure Spray. This mist to mouse technology helps lock in the desired look. The blow drying was done with over direction and volume. After the hair was completely dry, small sections were taken and sprayed with Shu Uemura Dry Texture Spray, then curled and pinned. The set was brushed and teased, creating a Glamourous Look. The Up-Do was done with a side part and loose French Braids. The Braids were twisted and crisscrossed then softly pinned. This look is perfect for the Summer or add some jewels to it for a very elegant touch.

SAMANTHA TREVINO / FEMALE MODEL & ENTERTAINER OF THE MONTH Music has always been my passion I started singing at a really young age and I truly connected with music, for me it wasn't just singing a song but feeling the emotions in what I was singing. My first performance that I can truly remember was at the age of 5 when I decided that I wanted to compete in my church's talent show, it didn't go as planned because I had no idea what I was doing but we all have to start somewhere and that was my start! I've been singing, performing and writing music ever since. To me music is a way of expressing emotions and inspiring, if I can sing and make one person happy my job is done! As I got older I started to get shy it wasnít as easy for me to go on a stage, make friends etc. I was known as the shy girl who didn't talk much. I soon found a love for acting and fashion. I started modeling at the age of 14, my first print job was for the Boy Scouts Of America and is now in the Washington DC Smithsonian; I soon after had my first audition for New York and LA Fashion Week, I had never walked a runway before but , my Mom and friend encour-

aged me to attend the audition, so I went and booked both fashion weeks thanks to Becky Upshaw who believe in me. I started acting classes at the age of 8 and performed in small live shows. It was definitely a challenge for me because I was a very shy kid off stage but as soon as I had the opportunity to perform, I outgrew the fear of not being heard and I loved it! nothing could stop me from wanting to work hard and grow as an actor and performer, all of my hard work finally paid off when I received a 15,000 dollar scholarship to the New York Film Academy let me tell you how it was all possible.. Around 7 months ago I was going though my Mom's messages on Facebook when I came across Al Zavala and noticed he reached out to me; at the time I was looking for representation and it was all Godís timing because he had actually texted me almost half a year prior to me seeing the message, he then invited me to meet with my Mother Agent Lari Nelson, She got me prepared for the Model and Talent Expo presented by: Mike Beaty where I received the 15,000 dollar scholarship

to the New York Film Academy, Overall Entertainer of The Year, first runner up in the teen Monologue competition and Over 10 call backs from larger market agencies based in LA, New York, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas and more! I couldn't have done it without her she trained me two days a week for 6 months straight to get me prepared for that very week and during those 6 months Al Zavala also came up with photo shoot concepts to get my portfolio ready for the Larger Market Agentís to look at. I couldn't be more blessed to have such an amazing Mother Agent and Photographer. This is just the beginning for Me and , I am very excited to take my next steps with Faith in my career and I couldn't have made it this far without God and the support from my loving parents, I will continue to pursue my dreams in hopes of one day winning a Grammy and in general growing as a Person and helping others as I grow.

"HOT Chefs of the Month" Chef Emily Hersh

San Antonio Chef Heats Things Up on Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns

When it comes to culinary competitions, there’s nothing hotter than Hell’s Kitchen, the popular Gordon Ramsay franchise, where fast-paced, cutthroat competition and a glaring eye from el jefe Chef Ramsay are enough to take out even the best chefs around. But homegrown girl, Chef Emily Hersh, a University of Texas at Austin and Natural Gourmet Institute graduate, has what it takes to handle the heat! The first professionally trained plant-based chef on the series, Emily has proven her chops on the current Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns season that launched May 31 on the Fox Network. The show features 18 talented chefs, all 23 or younger, competing to be the head chef at a Ramsay restaurant. COVID-19 delayed post-production and the launch of the show, but Emily used that downtime to continue building her growing Chef Emily brand. Currently working under her mentor, renowned chef Jason Dady at Jardin Restaurant, Emily, now 25, has developed a strong-and-growing following here in San Antonio and beyond through her own online and in-person cooking classes, personal chef services, recipe development business, and more. She’s passionate about sharing her love of plant-based foods with her clients and fans and promoting body positivity, something she struggled with herself during college. She lives by her trademarked motto, “Love Yo’ Self and Eat Yo’ Veggies.” As far as emerging young chefs go, Chef Emily Hersh is on FIRE! We think you’ll fall in love with her cheerful, playful personality and easy-to-follow cooking style. Check out her website, ChefEmilyHersh.com, and follow her on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and her new YouTube show, the Self-Help Chef, for fun cooking segments and banter. Editor’s Note: Emily would love SA Monthly readers to join her, too, for a Meet & Greet and Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns Watch Party from 6-9 pm on August 9 at Little Rhein Prost Haus.

Restaurateur of the Month Adrian Davila President, Davila's Dining Group

Adrian Davila is a third-generation pitmaster, barbecue chef and restaurateur at his family's acclaimed Davila's BBQ in Seguin, Texas. He continues to honor his family's legacy and the traditions of Mexican-American cooking, all while exploring his own unique identity. His grandfather, Raul Davila, opened Davila's in 1959, and passed the secrets of his smoked barbecue to Adrian's father, Edward. The family is proud of their commitment to creating the best barbecue in Texas. Adrian credits his

grandfather and father with teaching him the value of hard work. Most of his youth was spent in the kitchens of the restaurant, learning the special techniques until he could prepare everything on the menu to perfection. Adrian still practices those skills today, and has since created his own unique recipes for the restaurant as well as its extensive catering business. He has also taken some of those creations on the road to special events across the

state in the restaurant's food truck. He continues to expand his culinary knowledge and skills through research and travel with a special stop in the city from which his family once hailed, Avila, Spain. In 2018, he finished his first book, Cowboy Barbecue, working alongside noted culinary author Anne Volkwein, and has promoted the book across the country. Adrian has been featured on Cooking Channel's Man Fire Food, as a judge on the Travel Channel's American Grilled, as a contestant (and first-place winner) on the Food Network's BBQ Beatdown and BBQ Blitz "Texas Takedown," as a guest chef on the Food Network's The Kitchen, as a judge on the Food Network's BBQ Kids Champion, and on Tastemade. As the restaurant's spokesman, he has appeared on The Today Show, Tastemade, KSAT 12's SA Live, WOAI

News 4's San Antonio Living and KENS-5's Great Day SA. He and the restaurant have been featured in the Forbes, Texas Monthly's BBQ issue, Reader's Digets, The Washington Post, Chowhound and Cowboys and Indians Magazine The Davila's Dining Group has launched a wildly successful food truck, a catering service, an online store complete with swag and mail-order barbecue and cookbook. Want to cool off and wine-down? Here's what the Kuhlman Cellars team drinks to keep cool on their Texas vineyard. When it's hot outside, crisp, dry, acidic wines tend to offer the most refreshing experience because the acidity stimulates your saliva glands giving the impression of hydration. Avoid sweet or heavy red wines as these often result in feeling less hydrated. Beat the heat with three chilled wines perfect for long, hot summer days. 2019 Calcaria - ($28) Itís easy to see why this is Kuhlmanís most popular white wine! With aromas of lemon zest, chamomile, and honeysuckle, the 2019 Calcaria nose

will instantly transport you to the Amalfi coast during lemon season. Nectarine notes give it a warm summer appeal. It's light and bright with fresh acidity and pairs excellently with salty dishes like chips and loaded guacamole. The newest Calcaria will be released on August 1, 2021. 2019 Hensell ($24) An easy-to-pair, good-with-everything dry rosé is a summer staple in Texas for a reason. This delicate-hued rosé is delectably thirst-quenching on a hot summer day! With flavors of ruby red grapefruit and notes of hibiscus, pink apple, and lavender reminiscent of the French countryside, this stunning rosé is perfect for

lazy summer afternoons by the pool. 2019 Sauvignon Blanc - ($24) - This wine boasts the color of a waning sunset. With a bright minerality and notes of passion fruit, this wine will remind you of a tropical vacation. Serve chilled with delicate fish, the summer garden harvest, oysters, and fresh herbs. Shop them all at kuhlmancellars.com. Shipping is included for Texas orders over $129.

Parade of Homes 2021 By Autumn Leigh Medina

San Antonio’s Parade of Homes 2021 was one for the record books! The event launched on Friday, May 21st in lovely Belle Oaks with an exclusive sneak preview. We had a special opportunity to attend and see the most luxurious and popular trends in homebuilding. They say the devil is in the details…. At the Parade of Homes, the delight was in the details. Guest and master bedrooms featured pop-up ceilings, large windows and natural light. Bathrooms were set apart by gorgeous tiled walls. Living areas boasted recessed lighting among decorative ceiling cut-outs and dining areas featured the most elaborate light fixtures one could imagine. Texture, light and warmth were common themes seen throughout the homes. One common thread among all the featured homes was the trend of white exteriors. Dark blues – deep ocean style - seemed to be the favorite go-to color of choice for

bathrooms tiles and kitchen cabinets. Closets were found to feature center islands, elaborate shelving designs and systems, and chandeliers. While many homes offered a secluded wine closet, Design Tech Homes won an innovation award for a Wine Wall in their dining room that held 156 bottles of wine. Parade of Homes 2021 was such a great opportunity for one to see, touch and feel the most beautiful housing trends in the Greater San Antonio area. The homes in Belle Oaks did not disappoint and we look forward to seeing how these model homes inspire builders, decorators and home owners for years to come! Hot MarketNew Construction offers an alternative in house shopping With this hot San Antonio market and homes being sold quickly, consider perhaps buying a new construction house. Builders have been immensely busy yet there are still builders honoring their deadlines and agreements with the belief that customers are important to them. We as Realtors serve the customer and walk alongside buyers to make sure the terms of the contract are carried through to give the best possible experience for the buyer. There are over 150 builders to choose from on San An-

tonio depending on your needs. Consider quality, timeframe and warranty besides location and price point. An experienced professional can advise you on the best fit for your needs. It may be a very different market with many people submitting offers for a house, however, buying a house today is still a great investment. When shopping for a house please keep in mind the price per square foot in the area. Each area dictates a different price range which takes into consideration location, condition, size and amenities to name a few.

Dollars and Common Sense I like to talk about the elephant in the room. Although maybe a little uncomfortable at the time, it sure does make you breathe easier when it is all over. It is in the back of everyone's mind, but no one likes to talk about it. Let's chat about this house buying frenzy that we've been witnessing. Truth be told, it scares the heck out of me. I feel like there's going to be a whole lot of regret once this is all over. We are seeing a housing market shortage that is causing some pretty crazy bidding wars for people who want to buy a home. Day after day, I hear stories of agents and clients losing out on bids to people making outrageous offers that are getting accepted. People are defeated. Mad. Anxious. Sad. Disappointed. But yet, they keep on bidding and bidding and bidding. What concerns me is that I am seeing a whole bunch of people make really bad financial decisions that will affect them long term, just to get a house. Any house. I see a lot of people behaving badly and working so hard to make something work, that really should not work.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a powerful thing. It leads people to make rash decisions on BIG things like buying a home or refinancing ñ even when it might not necessarily be a good idea. Decisions like that lead to regret when people realize that their actions didn't really take into account things like, math (Does this refinancing actually make sense or am I just doing it because I want to tell my friends I got a 2.5% rate?) and good financial decisions (Is this home REALLY going to suit me and is it a good investment?) If you are currently in the market to buy a home, my advice to you is this: • Don't just buy a house just to buy one. Act responsibly. List out what is truly important to you in a home and stick to it. The last thing that you want to do is to overpay for a home that doesn't suit you or that you will outgrow quickly. Think about the long term instead of the right now. • Make sure you are working with the real estate professionals out there who will provide you with sound finan-

cial advice so that you can make good decisions. Work with the best Real Estate Agent and the best Loan Officer. • If you are looking to sell your home to make top dollar, remember that every other seller is also doing that. If you are selling your home to buy another, you will be paying more for your new house too. Before you put your house up for sale, have a plan. • Make sure you come up with a financial strategy that suits you. Everyone is different. Really think about things like: How much extra am I willing to pay for a home? What happens if I have to sell the home and the market has turned for the worse? Do I have enough in reserves saved up in case something catastrophic happens? As real estate industry professionals: • We must always do what is best for our clients. We must educate them. Explain things to them. Pros and cons of buying a home in today's market. Loan officers also need to be detailed in explaining payments and reiterate what can happen if an appraisal comes in short etc. • Remember, it is not about the sale or the loan...closing

the deal. It is about helping someone fulfill their dreams and for them to have a place for their family or to raise their children. Don't lose sight of that. We have to always remember to look at people as PEOPLE and not a $$. • We have to remember that we should not ever "force" things. When they are supposed to happen, they will. It is that simple. The bottom line is that we all need to take a deep breath, slow down a little and get back to the basics. Don't do things just because you fear you are going to miss out. Do them because they make financial sense to you. A house is not like a pair of shoes. You can't just return it because it doesn't fit right. It is one of the largest financial commitments that you will make in your lifetime, so act like it. Top Three Hottest Business Trends in 2021 Summer is sizzling, but so are these top business trends. COVID-19 permanently changed the way business is conducted, but some of the changes were well accepted and now trending. If you are in business, it is important that you know about these trends. Embrace these trends. Even though they may seem hard at first, they are huge game changers for your business. 1.) Remote working and video conferencing – Something that was so foreign to most people before it started is now a key component for most businesses. Since office space is no longer needed, businesses are using this working method for their employees, and saving money on overhead. Some companies are even going completely remote and closing their offices. That may not work for every industry, but it’s worth looking at the reduction in costs when switching to a remote workforce. Currently, there are many forms of video conferencing on the marketplace, but the most popular are Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Meeting face-to-face is becoming a thing of the past. I will say that it can be a hard change to accept for people like me, who still like to conduct business the traditional way, but overall, it is very rewarding when you are able to network with people all over the US without the hassle of traveling to each location. 2.) E-commerce with contactless delivery and shipping - I have mentioned this topic before, but I feel like it needs some emphasis. If your business does not currently have an E-commerce presence, it is time to invest in that now. You are not doing yourself a favor by neglecting this top trend. By not expanding your business into E-commerce, you are losing out on revenue and profits that you can potentially gain by showcasing and selling your products online. If your

business already has an E-commerce presence, then you can start looking at ways to improve your platform and delivery methods. Some suggestions would be to adjust your shipping strategy to international, Eco-friendly or offer expedited shipping. 3.) Going digital and paperless for your business. Paper is a thing of the past. With all the new technology available to you, now is the time to upgrade the technology for your business. Many new forms of technology are proven to help streamline processes, increase productivity, and revenue, not to mention, save you money on printing. Here are some ideas on how to go paperless: • Human Resources Information System, or HRIS, is a type of system that integrates your business operation like payroll and HR functions. This system allows you to onboard employees electronically, creates employee files, and enrolls your employees in benefits during open enrollment. • Most companies are taking their marketing digital, whether it be your newsletter, advertising, or video marketing. Social media platforms allow for a bigger audience that you may not be capturing otherwise. Using digital marketing can increase your customer base and brand within your market. • Many different types of software are available that will allow you to generate electronic invoices, client or patient files, and accounting. I am not biased toward a particular one. The point is to start eliminating paper and use a cloud-based platform whenever possible. Start trending in your business and follow these top trends that will make your business fire!

Porter Loring to begin innovative Grief support program, “Making Your Grief count” No-cost program open to the community at locations across San Antonio Porter Loring Family Care Services is launching “Making Your Grief Count,” a no-cost program open to all community members who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. The eight-week program is designed to create a safe space for participants to embrace their grief and discover ways to heal. Classes are held at multiple locations across San Antonio led by Celeste Miller, MA, LPC and Darwin Huartson, M.Div., BCC. Participants will delve into numerous areas of healing including: Rest & Regulation: Learning to bear and manage emotions is healthier than avoiding the pain. Each week, “Making Your Grief Count” will offer mindfulness practices that help the mind, body, and spirit to regulate; helping grievers regain balance and begin to make sense of their grief. Enduring Connection: Death ends a life but not a relationship. Learning how to bring their loved one forward can become an inner resource providing comfort, courage, and even guidance. Resilience: To help embrace and process one’s grief, resiliency is a thread throughout the curriculum. Participants will discover and claim their unique innate characteristics of resilience. These inner strengths are used to adapt and adjust to who they are becoming. Meaning Making: These inner strengths give perspective on who they are becoming, giving the ability to integrate the loss into the bigger picture of their ongoing life story. "We celebrate life, but also honor death and walking

through grief is an important part of that," said Celeste Miller, MA, LPC who is the Bereavement Coordinator for Porter Loring Family Care Services. "The grief process has a life of its own. It is a unique and profound time. We face what we have lost, our own mortality, and the challenge of learning to live without that special person. The journey can be overwhelming, confusing, and even frightening because our feelings are so intense and often out of control. It takes time, compassion for yourself, and a willingness to allow this grief to evolve into a healing experience and renewed life." "Making Grief Count" is the latest grief resource from Porter Loring which also offers support groups for: • Parents who have lost children • Men 65 and older who are grieving the loss of their wife • Young and middle-aged men grieving the loss of their wife • Women 60 and older who are grieving the loss of their husband • Young and middle-aged women who are grieving the loss of their husband • LGBTQ+ bereavement for the loss of a loved one (*NEW) • "Healing Holidays: Making Your Grief Count" "Since 1918, our family has worked with people going through tremendous loss and we have also endured many losses of our own," said Helen Loring Dear, President of Porter Loring Mortuaries. "In doing this type of work, we've learned so much about life, grief, and the important facets of healing. This led us to create support programs for people who are living with profound grief. It was important for us that we made these resources free and available to everyone, not just people who have used Porter Loring's services."

To sign up for "Making Your Grief Count," contact Celeste Miller, MA, LPC, Bereavement Coordinator for Porter Loring Family Care Services at (210) 227-8221. About Porter Loring: Porter Loring Mortuaries is San Antonio's oldest familyowned funeral home. Opened in 1918, as World War I ended and an influenza epidemic spread across the globe, Porter Loring brought a new type of mortuary service to families in San Antonio, one where the concept of "family" guides every part of its operation. Currently in its fourth generation of active management, the Loring family continues to treat everyone who enters their doors as a member of their family.

Have a Hot Creative Work You Want to Protect? A Few Things to Know About Copyrights! tections generally fall under the legal umbrella of intellectual property. Subsets of intellectual property include patents, trademarks, and copyrights. While patents and trade secrets generally cover inventions and innovations, and trademarks generally cover logos and brands, copyrights cover much of everything else. So what is a Copyright? I know, it seems obvious. We've all heard this word many times, but but is it? According to the U.S. Copyright Act, Title 17 of the United Stated Code, a Copyright is a form of protection to the authors of "original works of authorship" that are fixed in a tangible form of expression. Have a Hot Creative Work You Want to Protect? A Few Things to Know About Copyrights! We live in a world where everything is put on the internet and shared hundreds, thousands, or even a million times. It seems to have become commonplace and accepted that creative works will be copied. However, creators of certain types of content or works are entitled to protections under the law. These pro-

What is an original work of authorship? Well it can be many things, however, the formal answer is that it is a work that is "independently created by a human author and possesses some minimal degree of creativity." As you would expect, these works can include motion pictures, and other audiovisual works, sound recordings, literal works, musical works, dramatic works, choreographic works, architectural works, pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works. The list goes on and on. Many people think that you need to register a work to be en-

titled to copyright protection. However, this isn't necessarily true. According to the U.S. Copyright office, copyright protection begins once an original work of authorship is "fixed in a tangible medium." There are, however, benefits to registering your creative work with the U.S. Copyright office. By registering your work you can enhance the protections afforded you under the law. For example, registration (or refusal) is necessary to enforce the exclusive rights of copyright through litigation. It's also important to note that "notice" that you have a copyright typically consists of the copyright symbol or the word "copyright," the name of the owner, and the year of the first publication. However, applying a copyright notice to an original work hasn't been required since 1989. It's also important to remember that placing a copyright notice on a work is not a substitute for registration. As a copyright owner, you should also know that any or all of the copyright owner's exclusive rights, or parts of those rights, can be transferred. Just remember that the transfer, however, generally must be made in writing, and signed by the owner of

the rights conveyed, or the owner's authorized agent. While registering a copyright may be something you can do on your own, it may not hurt to talk to an attorney who can provide further guidance and assistance through the process. They may also be able to provide you with information regarding issues surrounding your original work that you hadn't considered. Regardless, as a creator, remember to educate yourself, and do everything you can to protect the rights afforded to you under the law. Philip A. Perez The Law Office of Philip A. Perez, P.L.L.C. Visit an All-Inclusive right now? Oh.Hell.Yes.

By Jeanne Albrecht, Owner, Cruise & Tour Center; travel@yourvacationhq.com Purely for research reasons only (yeah, right!), my husband and I flew to Cancun in late June to stay in an all-inclusive for 7 days in these pandemic times. As a travel agent, I chose Karisma Hotels & Resorts because of its AAA Four Diamond rating, top 5 ranking in Best Resorts in the World by Condé Nast Traveler, Travelers’ Choice and Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor, and Most Romantic Resort by Forbes; the allure of its Gourmet Inclusive® restaurants and bars; and its 14 resorts in the Cancun area. We chose its El Dorado Seaside Palms because it is adults only; all rooms have in-suite Jacuzzi; and its nestled in a lush palm forest. However, the connecting Karisma resort called El Dorado

Seaside Suites was temping with its high-rise views from a room that has personal swim-up or balcony pool. Definitely trying that next time. Our research? Flying non-stop from San Antonio to Cancun on Southwest in just two hours was a great start, including landing at the new, modern Cancun airport that rivals any international airport. Once we arrived at the resort, we never left because there was so much to enjoy, including constant entertainment, many swim-up and walk-up bars, and authentic cuisine from Mexican to Asian to Italian (and more). “All-inclusive” is just what it says. Included in the price: spacious accommodations; unlimited alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages made with local and international premium brands; minibar with beer, water, soft drinks and snacks

refilled daily; all gourmet meals and specialty bites including room service, utilizing organic ingredients from its on-property greenhouse; all taxes and gratuities; live music and entertainment (top-notch); strong WiFi; tennis court, rackets and balls; fitness center; activities like pool volleyball; non-motorized water sports; kayak/snorkeling gear; and more. Spa treatments are extra in the Naay Spa (one of the biggest in Mexico). There are MANY experiences in the area including incredible Mayan ruins, crystal clear cenotes (natural pools that are partially hidden underground), theme parks like Xcaret and the allure of Tulum. As for Covid precautions: the whole resort was constantly cleaned and deodorized; leaves weren’t tolerated for very long. We only had to wear masks when at a buffet line

served by waiters, with plexiglass separating us from food, or in the lobby or concierge offices. Covid testing was offered by a Cancun hospital for those of us flying back into the US. Do I recommend traveling in Mexico to an all-inclusive? If it’s a resort the quality of Karisma, I would go back tomorrow. BTW, Karisma also offers resorts in the DR, Jamaica and Columbia---and lots of options for families, such as its extremely popular Nickelodeon Resort in Punta Cana. I suggest using a travel agent who can help with tips like private shuttles; when to avoid Sargasso; making dinner reservations as soon as you arrive; how much time to allow when checking back in at the Cancun airport; etc. ¡Salud!
