In 2017 alone, it brought in a record-breaking
number of donations of 80,609 lbs. of food to feed the hungry in San Antonio. “We are so inspired by the legacy of the ‘Rib King’ Randy Goss, and his dream to have a food-secure San Antonio. The County Line Music series helps provide meals for kids and seniors throughout the summer, when they are most at risk for hunger,” says Eric Cooper, President and CEO, San Antonio Food Bank. E x p e r i e nc e You r Ow n ‘ Ma sa Mi r a c l e ’ Wi th E x qui si ta Tor ti l l as’ Fac e B ur n Web si te A pp Over the years, several people have claimed to witness a miracle right in their own kitchen: the image of Jesus or La Virgen de Guadalupe miraculously appearing on a tortilla they were preparing on a comal.
Now, you, too, can experience your own “masa miracle” courtesy of Exquisita Tortillas’ free website app, Exquisita Face Burn. Just go to www.exquisitafaceburn.com and download a picture of yourself (or any other image you might prefer) to have it “burned” onto an Exquisita Tortilla, and then share it on Facebook or Instagram. “So far, we’ve had a great response,” said Bill Guerra, chief operating officer of the family-owned Exquisita Tortillas. “Tortillas are meant to be shared with others at the table . Now, you don’t have to light up the comal, just fire up your computer to experience a masa miracle and ‘share’ your digital tortillas with friends and followers on your social media platforms”.
Exquisita Tortillas are available in major retail outlets such as H-E-B, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club as well as hundreds of other independent retailers and restaurants throughout the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and Corpus Christi. In March, Exquisita Tortillas moved into the San Antonio market and can be found at select H-E-B, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club’s and Culebra Meat markets. Vino, Pasas y Amistad Wine, Raisins and Friendship Firmly rooted in tradition and steeped in culture, and at the same time modern and vibrant, The Costa del Sol on the Southern Coast of Spain offers an abundance of Sun, friendly people, and a spectacular variety of delicious foods and wines from rustic to refined, from traditional to innovative. Everyone who has experienced the sun in Andalucia knows its Hot! A lesser known fact is that the food is gloriously fresh, and colorful, as it is varied. Bright red Gazpacho, a cold tomato soup, squid,
cooked in its own black ink, Jamon Serrano, a delicious ham from Iberico pigs who’s diet of acorns gives it a unique taste, golden brown, sunbaked, sweet, muscatel raisins, have all helped the Medeteranian diet become as popular and famous as the Spanish wines available around the world. Wine is so much part of the culture in Southern Spain that local farmers are often the subject of Paintings, like the work of Sandra Costello who has lived and recorded life in Southern Spain in her paintings for the last thirty years.
Celebrate! Many villages go as far as dedicating one day a year to pay homage to the wine, and the farmers who have worked the vines for hundreds of years. Every August 15th , Competa declares a holiday as it welcomes more than 10,000 people

What is a Texas Brasserie? It is a gathering place for locals and travelers alike. The food and drink menus are broad yet refined and have something for everyone, from accessible wine from France and California to housemade bread and desserts. As a Texas brasserie, Maverick features a French-inspired menu that is classically prepared and uses Texas ingredients when possible — most of the fare is cooked over a live wood fire. With Maverick’s open kitchen, guests can cozy up to the action as chef Chris Carlson wields an open flame to prepare unforgettable meals. Chef Carlson brings 20 years of experience working at some of the most critically acclaimed restaurants in both Chicago and San Antonio as well as his energy and excitement to all of his favorite dishes.
Maverick: Texas Brasserie; An Overview Located in the beloved bohemian neighborhood in Southtown San Antonio, Maverick delivers an authentic experience with bold flavors and attentive service. Paying homage to the glories of a classic brasserie, Maverick’s goal is to be a culinary hangout and a gathering place for people from all walks of life to connect and celebrate over a delicious meal or playful cocktail while making memories over an open fire. Maverick’s goal is to awaken and reward all of its patrons’ senses in a friendly atmosphere, with wood-fired cooking and warm-welcoming Texas hospitality. It’s both a neighborhood hangout and a food-lover’s destination.
Hospitality Maverick not only focuses on brasserie cuisine, it also exemplifies Texas Southern hospitality where customers are warmly welcomed like
esteemed longtime friends. San Antonio native, Josh Thomas, has returned home from San Francisco to serve as Director of Hospitality & Beverage for Maverick. As an Advanced certified sommelier (CMS), Josh brings his award-winning experience of more than 20 years in the wine and food industry back to San Antonio for a revival of hospitality. With Maverick, he hopes to create a welcoming space that is known for its inviting charm as well as its memorable food and drinks. Miguel Ardid, Director of Operations, rounds out the leadership team. He brings more than 30 years of kitchen and hospitality and operational and financial experience to the team. The Building The handsome brick buildings that house Maverick are rich in both history and industrial materials, which help portray their natural beauty. Dating back to the 1920s, the historic structures have hosted everything from a Presbyterian church to an Anheuser-Busch storage facility. Most recently, they were occupied by an eclectic blend of trendy liquor store meets vintage clothing shop and Gemini Ink, a local writing nonprofit. Now, all four buildings are reunited and repurposed into a hip, hospitality haven for drink and food celebration. The Vibe Guests are invited to Maverick to relax in the warm, inviting aroma of the live wood fire and rotisserie. The crowd is a mix of neighborhood residents, downtown visitors and culinary explorers from San Antonio and beyond, who are looking for an energetic, yet satisfying restaurant experience. Sanders Architecture and Cravotta Interiors, from Austin, Texas, have taken the raw industrial and retail spaces and transformed the brick walls, concrete floors and wood beam ceilings into a warm, yet contemporary brasserie. The 7,300 square-foot interior and 1500 square foot patios can hold more than 200 guests for lunch, dinner and brunch service. And guests can choose their own vibe in the lively Tavern Dining RoomTDR, the vineyard inspired Patio Dining-PD, or
the Kitchen Dining Room-KDR, next to the open kitchen with Chef Chris at the helm. And the intimate private dining room with a view of the Tower of the Americas and a separate Presa Street entrance set a celebratory stage for guests looking for something personalized and unique whether for a birthday, anniversary, wedding reception or business meeting. The Food While the interiors set the mood, the menu is inspired by a wood-fired oven informed by classic brasserie-inspired techniques. A wide range of dishes includes rotisserie chicken, hamachi tuna with wasabi cream and ponzu, skin-on grilled duck breast, and well seasoned vegetable compositions to be shared or traditionally coursed. Guests can enjoy grilled quail with citrus and fennel, pappardelle with rotisserie lamb and pork sausages, roasted tomato and garlic sauce, while meat lovers can dive into a perfectly grilled entrecôte, mixed grill or double-cut pork chop. And for Mavericks who just love their duck and fresh seafood, there’s French country pâté and wild caught fish sauteed or grilled.

It’s 6:30 on a warm and humid evening in July. Cathy Camacho sits in her hot car in front of her house, hand reluctantly on the key in the ignition that doesn’t seem to want to turn. The Doctor says I need to improve my fitness she thinks to herself, but I’m so tired from working all day, I don’t want to go exercise. Cathy Camacho has hit the exercise wall. She thinks of fitness as that thing you do over there. Exercise at the gym. Hike at the park. Yoga at the studio. Already overwhelmed getting the kids to school on time, finishing that report due at work, and replanting the backyard flowerbed, finding time to exercise is unimaginable. Cathy’s easiest solution brings exercise into daily activity by using posture. She uses posture, keeping her feet straight as she walks the kids to school. She uses posture, evenly distributing her weight as she sits at her desk. She uses posture,
keeping her core engaged as she replants the flowerbed. Posture tears down the exercise wall as anything Cathy is doing becomes exercise and improves fitness. All without sitting in a hot car not wanting to turn the key. 1. What is a posture system? It uses brain science to wire your brain to your body through posture. 2. What is brain science? A field of neurology called brain plasticity. 3. What is an exercise system? It requires specific exercises, day after day, week after week. Since most people do not enjoy exercise, they quickly fail with exercise systems. 4. What is the power of posture? When you use your posture correctly, everything you do becomes exercise.
5. What are gaps in my fitness? If something is bothering you, you have a gap. 6. How long are the sessions? Each session is 30 minutes. POINT 52 Results 1. Correct posture. 2. Improved flexibility. 3. Proper range of motion. 4. A faster connection between your brain and body. 5. Find all the gaps in your fitness. 6. Fill them. SHERRI BRAXTON
BOOM!!! LIFE IS GOOD! “I don’t like hearing people complaining that they can’t afford a gym.” She throws her hands up in a very “Sherri” gesture. “Go outside and walk around the block.”
S
herri Braxton wants people to really, really, really pay attention to their bodies. There are so many diseases, like diabetes, that could be managed, or even avoided, she says, if we gave our bodies nourishing food and daily exercise. “I don’t like hearing people complaining that they can’t afford a gym.” She throws her hands up in a very “Sherri” gesture. “Go outside and walk around the block.” Flashback to last June, and Sherri, owner of Sherri Fitness, had her clients working out in a field! She’d been coaching out of her garage and was finalizing plans for her existing fitness center at 6563 Babcock, when the house she shared with husband, Darryl, and son, Blaise, sold overnight, prompting her foray into the fields in a hot Texas summer.
“But I didn’t lose a single client,” she enthuses. “Those ladies stuck it out with me.” Sticking with it is something Sherri knows all too well. Although she’s been an exercise enthusiast her entire life, she wasn’t always living and breathing fitness the way she does now. Everything changed during her husband’s deployment while the couple lived in Albuquerque. Deciding to try her hand at competition, Sherri hired a personal trainer and dove into the hard work. Although she took first place in her division, she knew she could do better. She struck out on her own, devouring all the articles in Oxygen Magazine and devoting herself to everything produced by Monica Brant, international fitness icon, a game plan that helped Sherri win an Overall title in the Texas Shredder Show in Austin.

Before too long, people were approaching her in the gym… and even in the grocery store, asking what they needed to do to look like her. Her response? “I want you to look like you, not like anyone else. Find the way your body wants to be.” And what does it take to find out the way a body wants to be? Exercise and nutrition, with an emphasis on nutrition. Sherri Fitness isn’t just about the classes and the exercise; she also insists that her clients adhere to individually tailored meal plans. “Seventy per cent of the change comes from what you
put in your mouth,” she declares. And she admits she can be a tough trainer, but she feels that anyone who trusts her to help them find a healthier lifestyle deserves her best effort. “Your goals are my goals,” she says. When a woman first walks through the door of Sherri Fitness, Sherri herself sits down with her and establishes exactly what she wants to accomplish in terms of weight loss, strength increase, and overall health improvement. And she knows it’s her job to see that her clients stick to it and accomplish those goals. And, wow,

do they accomplish them! Some of Sherri’s clients have lost thirty to forty pounds and up to sixty overall inches in as few as six months. And don’t take it from me, here’s just one of Sherri’s many five star reviews: “I started with Sherri a few months ago and lost 7 lbs my first week!!! So far I’m down 23lbs! Before Sherri I hated working out and now I enjoy it. She makes it fun. Don’t get me wrong though, her workouts are tough but hey, if you want results, you got to do the work” “I’m not mean,” Sherri insists. “If one of my girls is going on vacation, I’ll tell her to go ahead and have that
slice of pie, if that’s what she wants. I don’t expect them to stick to my level of training, especially when they’re off having fun. Why go to Paris and eat nothing but chicken breasts?” But I’m pretty sure that as soon as her girls get back to the gym, Sherri will be right there with her signature expression: “Boom! Life is good.” And if any of them miss more than a couple of days, she’ll be on the phone telling them to get their butt to a workout. Speaking of “Boom,” it’s not just a saying any more; it’s also a pre- and post-workout beverage from Pure Juice. Mario and Kim Ruiz, who had
11

recently bought a juice chain and transformed it into Pure Juice, met Sherri when Kim started taking classes back in Sherri’s garage. After a couple of weeks in Sherri’s garage workouts, Kim asked whether Sherri had ever thought about opening her own gym. Well, Sherri and her husband had started the research to do just that. “We need to find out how to create an actual storefront,” said Darryl, the big researcher on the team, then added as a joke, “if someone doesn’t find you first.” Two months later, Kim and Mario found her. Seeing her massive Facebook presence and all her five-star reviews, not to mention Kim’s own experiences in Sherri’s classes, the Ruiz’s decided to invest in the fitness side of Sherri Fitness by helping her open the gym, but they also tapped into her nutrition expertise for a new signature drink for pre- and postworkout. The drink contains kale, apple cider vinegar, beets, and ginger, among other healthy ingredients.
12
The name? “Boom!” What else? And what else would you expect sales of the drink to do except explode? Sherri and Kim met with the manager of a single Gold’s Gym location, which led to her beverage and four others being carried in four locations. Then Mario met with the corporate folks from Dallas, who approved the eventual sale of select Pure Juice drinks, including Boom, to all twenty-eight San Antonio locations. There’s even talk of a possible expansion to Dallas, where a Pure Juice warehouse would need to be built to handle all the product! And while on the subject of expansion, with her first center only seven months out of the starting gate, Sherri Fitness has already decided on the location of a second facility which will be even larger and more fabulous than the existing location. Also, Pure Juice has approved the recipe for a second Sherri Fitness signature drink, a fat burner called “Blast!” Not bad for a self-proclaimed “Air Force brat” who started coaching out of her garage. And why is she so successful? A big part of her success comes from the fact that her biggest competition is against… herself. “When my clients are feeling awesome about themselves,” she says, “that motivates me to come up with even crazier workouts.” She’s never willing to settle for second best. She had a successful business in her garage? Well, then it was time to open a gym. That gym is successful? Well, time for another gym.

Pure Juice wanted to create a Boom workout drink? Awesome. Sherri Braxton had to find a way to get it into Gold’s Gyms across the state. Of course, no one ever succeeds completely on her own, and Sherri credits much of her success to the support of both her husband and son. “We’re a total fitness family.” She’s also grateful to Mario and Kim for their help, as well as crediting two other amazing women, Charlie Cooper and Karen Grace of KENS 5 for television coverage that opened Sherri fitness to a much larger audience. While Sherri Fitness gyms are a place where women can work it out and sweat up a storm without being embarrassed by musclebound men, Sherri’s message is for everyone. “Stop making excuses. Just walk once around your block every day. Start there.” Her message is especially important to her since she became a mother seven years ago. She firmly believes parents need to understand that they are a role model to their children. “Parents need to wake up. Your kids are watching you.”
14
Sherri Fitness offers fitness classes six days a week, with both morning and evening classes available. She plans to host kids’ classes and fitness camps over the summer as well as expanding her Sherri Fitness gear shop and adding nutritional supplements. The Pure Juice bar in the gym’s entrance serves up delicious and healthy drinks like smoothies, coldpressed juice, and cashew milk, just to name a few. “First, you need to get healthy,” Sherri insists, “then you do the work to get stronger and leaner.”

By Crystal Holmes Yes, you can eat your way to healthy skin. We know how diet affects the body. An unhealthy diet can affect metabolism, cause weight gain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, fatigue, the list goes on… It can even affect organs such as your heart and liver. Your diet also affects another organ, your skin! It’s good to know that a large percentage of aging is actually within our control. So how can a sweet potato keep our skin healthy and keep us looking young? Sweet potatoes actually serve as a natural sunblock! Here’s how it works. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene
is a nutrient found in plants and can be converted to Vitamin A in the body. (One half-cup of baked sweet potato contains enough beta carotene to provide nearly four times the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A.) Carotenoids like betacarotene, when consumed, are incorporated into our skin and help protect our skin cells from sun exposure. This may help prevent sunburn and dry, wrinkled skin and it also helps maintain cell integrity. As we know, sun is damaging to the skin, causing premature aging. Along with our daily sun protection, sweet potatoes give extra protection from the inside. More good news is that all that extra money you’ve been spending to add avocado to your taco is actually really worth it. Avocados are high in
healthy fats. Healthy fats are good for our body and also provide our skin with moisture, which does wonders for our complexion. Among many other health benefits, avocados contain between 2 and 6 micrograms of biotin, which is between 6 and 16 percent of the dietary reference intake. As many of us know, biotin is part of the B complex vitamins which are necessary for healthy skin. You can even get benefits from applying avocado directly to your skin as a mask! Eating red or yellow bell peppers is another example of how we can maintain skin health and prevent skin aging. In addition to being a high source of beta-carotene (like sweet potatoes), bell peppers are also one of the best sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that’s necessary for creating the protein collagen, which keeps our skin firm and strong! In studies, women who ate plenty of Vitamin C had a lower change of getting wrinkled, dry, aging skin. So eat up! Aging is a beautiful, natural part of life. Our skin is simply a reflection of our life choices. The goal isn’t to stop aging but to protect ourselves while we age. If we have an opportunity to be kinder to ourselves and our bodies, why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we pay attention to what we eat and show ourselves a little extra love? And unlike avocados, this “extra” doesn’t cost a thing.
“Believe me, if I look good, it’s not an accident”. Nora Ephron was a writer and director who had the knack of saying what we are all thinking. While effortless, natural beauty is the desired state for most women, the irony is that it often takes effort to create this natural beauty. The good news is, a little effort can go a long way. And this minimal investment is worth it since our face is like our own personal, walking business card. It’s our brand. If we are not confident with how we are presenting ourselves, can we really expect to land that job or get that guy? These days, there are effective, easy solutions for the most common facial concerns, like acne, unwanted hair, wrinkles and sunspots. Combine these treatments with exercise, eating well and working on inner peace and we are definitely on our way to presenting our absolute best selves to the world. Effortless beauty may not be entirely effortless but that’s ok. We live in a day where we have
great options. As Nora so confidently reminded us, taking control of our life is a choice, not an accident. When will you start?

What’s hiding in your food? Are you diligent about checking labels when you’re grocery shopping? Are you the stand-inthe-middle-of-the-aisle-reading kind of shopper before throwing it in your cart? Well if you’re not, you should be; especially when you’re trying to get your kids to eat as healthy as you do. Many people are highly unaware of what is hiding in their (and their kids’) food and how many loopholes there are for the FDA to hide stuff from you. Here are some tips you need to know before you make the purchase: TIP #1: LOOK FOR HIDDEN SUGAR This one, in my opinion, is the most important because it is the most misunderstood, so read thoroughly! Did you know that there are over 61
names for sugar that can be listed in your food??? And since so many people aren’t familiar with all 61 names, they don’t even know it’s in there. Some of these sugars are so-called natural sugars occurring in things like fruits, called fructose, but the problem is that the FDA isn’t required to list which sugars are natural and which sugars are added in foods, so we really have no idea how much sugar we are getting naturally from our food! According to SugarScience.com, over 74% of packaged foods have added sugar. The scary reality is, we really have no idea what we are eating In addition to all of us as a society being misinformed, there’s a lot of talk about natural sugars these days. This is a silly phrase because, technically, almost all sugar is natural in regards to it originated in nature. I mean, white sugar was once a part of sugar cane, which is a plant, so it’s natural, right? Problem is, this nasty white
stuff has been completely stripped of any and all nutrients and fiber so it is nutritionally void, and completely useless; the only things you are getting from it is cavities and diabetes. So you see, the phrase natural sugar is a misnomer, and quite misleading.. Other natural sugars you might see on labels, brown sugar (it’s just white sugar with molasses added, still void of nutrients), fructose (not the kind from fruit), sugar alcohols (I’ll explain this below), and fruit juice concentrate (like white sugar, it has been stripped of any nutrients so pretty useless). An interesting thing to note about sugar alcohols is that many low carb foods contain sugar alcohols, which the manufacturer is not required to count as carbs, but these carbs still end up being absorbed by your body, can spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. But when you look at the nutrition label you see ZERO so you, as the consumer, think it’s sugar free! Be careful when looking at sugar content in food; just looking at the label doesn’t really cut it anymore, you’ve got to read ingredients. The safest way to
avoided these added sugars of course is to eat as many whole foods as possible. TIP #2: Dairy-intolerants beware Let me preface this by saying, there is A LOT of conflicting information out there about dairy. While that is not what I will explain here (I will let you draw your own conclusions about that!), it is important to know that more than 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant, meaning that they lack the enzymes needed to process dairy properly. If consuming dairy gives you discomfort, it should be avoided. However, for those that can tolerate it, dairy does have many nutritional benefits, including protein and calcium, B12 and other vitamins. On an ingredient list, there are many forms of dairy you may not know about, and there could be some things making your tummy rumble because of these hidden ingredients. First on the list is the ever-popular whey. Whey, a derivative of milk, is a milk protein sepa-
& half, hydrolysates (casein, milk protein, whey protein), kefir, koumiss, lactalbumin, lactalbumin phosphate, lactoglobulin, lactulose, milk (condensed, derivative, powder, dry, evaporated, lowfat, malted, non fat, protein, skim, solids, whole), milk fat, nougat, rennet casein, sour cream, and sour cream solids. Honestly, if whatever you are buying has this many ingredients you shouldn’t be buying it anyway, but just be mindful of what your digestive system can handle and watch out for hidden dairy! TIP #3: Look for real ingredients. HINT: natural flavors are not so natural...
rated from the casein (another milk protein) when cheese is made. So while it is a protein (and used in many high protein foods like bars, powders, cookies, and even ice cream), it can cause some digestive issues (gas, bloating, diarrhea) if you are sensitive to dairy. Another hidden ingredient, as I mentioned above, is casein. This is another milk protein that can cause a bubbly tummy, and is used in many packages products. Lactose, another hidden dairy ingredient, is a milk sugar that is often the ultimate source of dairy discomfort for people. You can find lactose free milk, yogurt, and other items, but these items still have other milk derivatives in them. Some other not-so-well-known hidden dairy ingredients are artificial butter flavor, butter fat, butter oil, caseinates (ammonia, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium), ghee, half
Ever seen this on a label or even on the front of a packaged food item? Natural flavors sounds like it should be all-natural right? Yeah, very misleading According to the Code of Federal Regulations from the FDA, the definition of natural flavor is: the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional (21CFR101.22). What the heck does that even mean??? Basically, these so called natural flavors are no safer or more healthy than their artificial counterparts. Natural flavoring, just like artificial flavoring, are made by flavor chemists in a laboratory that mix chemicals to create flavors; they can even be found in organic foods.. Yeah, not so natural now, huh? As the definition in the Federal Code says, these flavors can come from fruits, herbs or spices, but it can also come from meat parts, leftover dairy products, or from something as obnoxious as the sex glands of a beaver...I’m not lying. The ingredient Castoreum has been used for years in things like candies, drinks, puddings and to contribute to the flavor and odor of cigarettes. I tell you this gory, disgusting detail to drive home this crucial take-away: Be careful
what you are purchasing. Whole foods are always better than packaged foods; but if you must purchase packaged food read the ingredients and make sure you recognize ALL of them on the label. EVOLVE
the way you work  out
Fit with Grace By Karen Grace, SA Monthly Wellness Editor IDLife Senior Director, Former KENS TV-5 Anchor Being healthy shouldn’t be complicated. Many people think it is. They get overwhelmed by complicated work-out classes and schedules or they are intimidated by meal prepping. Perhaps they are scared they will fail because so many previous diets ended without results. Often people want a quick fix. A nip or a tuck and bam I’ll be bikini ready! Or maybe you’re one of those dedicated nutritious and active natural athletes who miraculously is winning the war on your waistline. Hey no pain, no gain right? Wrong. I believe in working smart. That means work hard, but without wasting energy, time, or resources. You can apply that to your education, career or any goal you have in life, including your body. I can only speak for myself and for the dozens of people I have helped to transform their health in the past year. I can testify that nutrition is the number one way to give your body what it needs to repair, rejuvenate and even look younger! (Second to physical activity.) Let me introduce you to IDLife – which stands for Individually Designed Life. After working out with a trainer who advised me on what foods to avoid and how to properly eat, I made a life-long change. Then, I vetted many supplement companies to find the one that matched not only my lifestyle, but my philosophy. I wanted a product that was GMO free, gluten-free, soy-free and organic. I had already ditched saccharine, aspertane and all artificial ingredients from my diet. I had also dropped chicken and most meat that could possible have steroids. Fish, fruit, vegetables and water. That’s where I lived. IDLife, to my knowledge, was the closest brand to meet those standards - so I jumped. How many times has someone offered you the “secret” to losing weight and keeping it off? How much of that advice was harmful to your heart or encouraged unhealthy eating habits? Finally, how many times have you envied the friend who never seems to gain weight, yet you try to emulate their diet or workout routine? I have concluded that what works for others, may NOT work for you. That’s why it’s so important that a husband doesn’t just take what his wife takes. Even when it comes to children, what works for Johnny may not be right for Susie. IDLife supplements are not only customized to my lifestyle, they compensate for any nutritional gaps that I have so that my body can function at it’s best. How? I was honest when I first took the free, HIPPA-compliant health assessment. I included any prescription drugs ordered by my physicians, foods I con-
sumed regularly, hair products, even my average exposure to sunlight. Nothing makes me happier than a product that has changed my life and provided more downtime to do the things I love. Instead of going from store to store to buy the latest cleanse or vitamin that my friend swore she shed five pounds from, I receive a text from IDLife. The message, reminding me that it’s not only time to take the supplements my body actually needs, but that I'm consistently investing in myself. It gets better. It was important for me to align with a brand that believes in team building and encouraging each other. Guess what? You can’t find that kind of support on the shelf. When I signed up for IDLife, I was flooded with new friends and associates across the globe, each one encouraging me. Does it take a village to lose weight and stick with it? For me? The answer was yes. I’m writing this because many people see my social media posts and ask what is IDLife. It’s a game changer. The other day I was complaining to someone I consider a life coach. I was doing so many things and felt like I was running out of energy. He said the key words “time is something you can never get back." That's when I realized that I wasn’t going to waste time anymore on things that don’t have reward. Prioritize, I thought. Got it. Now when I work out, there’s no pressure. I just feel good. I feel confident. When I eat, I enjoy the choices that I make. I don’t feel slighted. Every now and then, I indulge in sweets or a soda here and there. Then I go back to my routine (feeling a little guilty) but knowing that I am not perfect. What I do know is I am fulfilled. I have Peace of Mind. I have Support. I have Confidence. I have Knowledge based off my own Success. And with that , I have the Motivation to Influence and Help others. Learn more about my IDLIfe or join my team by clicking here and taking the free, five-minute health assessment and then message me! What are the benefits? We live in a fast paced world and typically do not eat and take in the proper amount of nutrients and vitamins that is required daily. Close to 65% of American’s lack in one or more vitamin with vitamin B’s being on top of that list. B-12 and Super Lipo Lean not only help with energy levels but have scientifically been proven to support a healthy metabolism and help with weight control/loss. Those that regularly do the monthly Vitamin C shot have noticed less sick days and allergy issues. Of course, there are a list of
health benefits from the vitamin shots, but the additional upside is KMM provides the vitamin shot clinics at no additional cost to the corporation and the employees benefits include receiving 50% off the clinic cost and on-site care saving them the time it would take to go to the clinic. Macronutrients and Micronutrients By Skie Molinar Macronutrients- (Food); are compounds consumed by humans in large quantities. These nutrients build muscles and provide energy. Micronutrients – (Vitamins): are nutrients needed by the body in minute amounts. There are three major Macronutrients the body needs to survive. Proteins – the body’s building blocks. Carbohydrates – the body’s main source of energy Fat – source of energy There are four categories of fat; a. Monounsaturated; canola oil, olive oil, peanut oil, and safflower oil. They are found in avocados, peanut butter, nuts and seeds. b. Polyunsaturated; some are corn oil, soybean oil, and flaxseed oil. They are also found in fatty fish, walnuts, and some seeds. c. Saturated; fats found in red meat, milk products Including butter, and palm and coconut oils. Regular cheese, Pizza, and grain-based and dairy desserts are common sources of saturated fat in our meals.
d. Trans fats (Trans fatty acids); Processed Trans fats are found in stick margarine and vegetable shortening. Trans fats may be used in storebought baked goods and fried foods at some fast-food Restaurants. Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated are liquid at room temperature. These are considered to be better for you. Saturated and Trans Fats are usually solid at room temperature. These are considered to be bad for you. There are two categories of Micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. Examples of Vitamins and or Supplements; 1. Vitamin A 2. Vitamin B 3. Vitamin C 4. Vitamin D 5. Electrolytes are chemicals that conduct electricity when mixed with water. They regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood acidity and pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. A muscle needs calcium, sodium, and potassium to contract. When there is an imbalance of these substances, it can lead to muscle weakness or muscle cramps. Remember that the heart muscle and nerve cells use electrolytes to carry electrical impulses to other cells.

Louis Vega Trevino Florida Bound By Gabriel Diego Delgado On May 12, 2018, “Color / Line/ Form”, a group exhibition featuring Louise Vega Treviño will open at Rosenbaum Contemporary in the greater Miami area of South Florida. Paired up with Contemporary Masters like Kenneth Noland and Cleve Gray, Treviño will exhibit alongside some his artistic heroes. A new artist added to the Rosenbaum Contemporary roster, Treviño was accessioned into the investment art division of Rosenbaum Fine Art. He joins another contemporary painter James Little as the two newcomers to the exhibiting names within “Color / Line/ Form”. In deciding which artists to add to the exhibition’s theme, the gallery had to address the underlying sensibilities of the genre at hand. The deconstructed identifiers are pointed out in the
gallery’s press release. “Color, Line and Form are essential basic elements of any artwork, regardless of genre, artist, school, and composition. However, when artists draw inspiration from past movements and genres, the present artwork being created hold true to the intentions, aesthetic, and
validations of the historical lineages; an artistic acknowledgement to the predecessors. Although artists display their distinct aesthetic, a common language is understood in relation to color, line and form.” Treviño is a trained architect who graduated with a degree that spans both architecture and art, granting him an unusual perspective on the two industries and forging an uncanny ability to create work that is influenced by a variety of architectural parameters. Known as a colorist stripe painter, Treviño explores simple geometric alignments with hard-edged and blurred lines; verticals, and horizontal selections that invite the viewer into his work of artistic movement of optical illusion and irregular “Frank Stella-ish” shaped canvases– all of which are amusingly clever arrangements. “The “Trapezoid Series”, paintings in this show has separate individual shaped trapezoidal canvases with each divided into two color combinations. One side with cooler hues and the adjacent warm hues with panel being shaped out into a hexagonal overall configuration. The “Trapezoid Series”, can uniquely be presented into other interesting
configurations; linear, serpentine, hexagon and plane-angles”, says Treviño. Treviño’s paintings recall not only the atmospheric color fields of Mark Rothko and Jules Olitski, but also the indeterminate margin where color field interests merge with the geometric and optical abstractions of Gene Davis and Richard Anuszkiewicz. In that margin, Treviño’s work finds its form– an area once explored by Morris Louis and which Treviño color-charged compositions have revived and redefined. Treviño is neither tied to formalities of pictorial definitiveness like perspective, detail, or anatomical renditions. His paintings are something of a paradox, balancing cool analysis with a hot pursuit of color relationships in which he blurs the distinction between color, line and form; such that those elements seem to merge and deconstruct in an astonishing blend of hues that are only conceptual in relation to one another. Taking more freedom in pictorial placement, shaped canvases are purposefully arranged in a way that is neither fluid nor always geometric, but
teeters often on the brink of symbolic. “Since I could remember, I wanted to be as productive and successful as Kenneth Noland. Over the years seeing his work in museums all over the world and being inspired by his geometric shaped canvases and colorful combinations,” says Treviño. “The show called “Color/Line/Form” at Rosenbaum Contemporary in May will be with Cleve Gray, Kenneth Noland, and James Little. To be included in a group exhibition with such brilliant artists that made our art history so expansive with color and design. I will be showing with my mentors and I can really appreciate this opportunity for my future.” “Trapezoid Series III”, a 70 x 70 inch modular configuration, is an artistic construct of five separate trapezoid-shaped paintings–hung in such a way, by direction of the artist, that this arrange-
ment mimics a hexagon minus the bottom edge. Our collective mind confirms and fills the void, optically, to complete the closed shape. However, it is every intention of the artist to allow the negative space to play a role in the overall aesthetic of perception. The ‘gap’ allows an entrance into the work– a physical entrance for us to explore the perimeters of the painting. Once “inside” the painting, we are met with a negative hexagon, a shape that mimics and seemingly mocks its exterior parent. So clever is Treviño that he forces the viewer to address the positive and negative components of the physicality of the canvas. Not many painters can do that; we normally obsess over the paint on the canvas…the composition, color, line, rendition, etc. However, here with “Trapezoid Series III”, Treviño adds layer upon conceptual layer of observation and appreciation. A tactic similar to Lucio Fontana, where we were made aware of the space behind the canvas, through the cuts on the canvas to the space that exists between the canvas and the wall it hangs on. Treviño revisits that 1960’s contemporary connotation with the spaces around the canvas(es). As defined by the angular stripes on the trapezoid shapes, Treviño paints each half section separately. He allows the first half of the painting to dry and revisits the singular panel to respond to the color palette with artistic intuitiveness. Warm and cool tones mix and match, compliment, as
well as vibrate off one another. The shades, tones and variances in the lines are created by a predetermined color combination picked by the artist. Treviño only uses three to four colors in each section, blending those few colors to create the varied tones found in the pattern. Methodical in practice, Treviño’s dedication to craft, theory, architecture, and modular flexibility makes for wonderful array of post / neo-construction aesthetic. “It’s very exciting to be able to see one of my paintings next to his painting and feel so proud of where my art career as grown”, says Treviño.

How does Norman have a hologram? Did we go from Steampunk to Sci fi? How will Penelope help the Hammer?

the time never even walking on a runway. I left then with only 1 callback from an agent in Tokyo. She had told me that I needed to wait until I was older with braces off and I needed to grow, so of course I was upset because I didn’t realize how much work it takes to get signed, I just wanted it to happen. After that I started doing every fashion show I could possibly get myself into in Oklahoma, Texas and Los Angeles. I did every photo shoot just so I could get the practice. Within the last year I have moved away from home to live in Austin, Texas so I could work with Lari Nelson.
TOKYO BOUND WORKING AND LIVING MY DREAM By: Rachel Mirelez Rachel Mirelez. I am 18 years old from Oklahoma! I started modeling 4 years ago. I have always been bullied, always been the girl that didn’t have friends, didn’t like sports like everyone else my age, never had good grades and never really fit in anywhere in school. Finally I realized modeling was something I was interested in so my mom began home schooling me so we could see what we could do with that, I went to expo in 2013, at
I recently competed at The Model and Talent Expo once again in November and that’s when it finally happened !! Here we are 4 years later and that same agent from Tokyo Wold Top Agency has finally signed me, so I’m currently writing this from Japan where I’ve been since February. Working and living my Dream. As hard as it was to finally get signed it was so worth it all and now I can’t wait to see what’s next after this. Looking forward to working in the USA for a few Months and , then hopefully back to Tokyo for another Booking Season .
By: Felipe Gomez I was born in El Paso, Texas and moved to San Antonio when I was 6 years old back in 2005. Been here in San Antonio ever since and I consider my home town. Most of my younger years I was raised by my mom who was a single mom. I enjoyed being involved with sports at
school and in different city leagues. I played football, basketball, and soccer. I’ve always been one to enjoy physical activity. I’ve always felt different from other kids and knew I would be doing something different in life than most. Growing up I’ve always had compliments because of my eyes . During my middle school and beginning of my high school years is when my body started to change for the better. For a while I was shorter than most of my friends and a little husky. Then end of eighth grade year is when my body started to stretch and grow. Which leads to my senior year in high school when my mom and grandma asked and encouraged me to try modeling. I had never really thought that I could just simply try it out, but I remember thinking if I can have the opportunity I would love to do it if I got the chance! The beginning of January 2017 is when my mom and step dad decided to take me to meet Lari Nelson. I was 17 years old and it was the middle of my senior year in high school. At that time I didn’t know anything about modeling, how it worked or what needed to be done to be a successful model. We talked to Lari and she loved me and I loved her too! She was so nice and comforting. She told me I was the perfect size
and height to be a high fashion model. During our meeting she asked me why I wanted to be a model. I told her I wanted to because I know I can do this I just need some direction. So Lari took me under her wing and became my Mother Agent. The following week I went to her runway modeling class for the first time and I was so nervous, excited and scared not knowing if I would be good on the runway or if I could compare to the other models. The first time I walked the runway, knowing how I was already feeling with butterflies in my stomach, I LOVED IT! After a few weeks of runway practice, Lari talked to us about going to The EXPO in June 2017. This motivated me to do everything I could to look as good as possible to be the best at EXPO. I got a part time job to save and pay for most of expenses. I worked out more and started to eat healthier. By the time it was time to go to EXPO I had just graduated, turned 18 and was excited and ready to go. Going to EXPO was an awesome
experience overall. I received 5 callbacks and met with them all plus a few more. I also received a few awards at the end of it all for runway and for swimsuit. I got a lot of interest but no contracts to sign yet. When we got back home from EXPO, my mom told me to not worry since I am still very young, and it was only my first time she encouraged me not to give up. I kept doing what I was doing by working out, eating healthy and staying motivated to get to the best shape I can by getting leaner and put on more muscle. Then I met with Mike Beaty and Lari again after a few months and they both suggested for me to go to EXPO again. I got so excited and more motivated to get ready for this event again. I also started to take acting lessons to prepare myself better for acting portions of EXPO. The second EXPO came around in November 2017 and this time I went on my own. It was a special experience for me because I was with a lot of other models my age who are also under Lari and I already
knew what to expect so I was able to enjoy this experience more. I received 8 callbacks this time. Soon after getting home from second EXPO I got an offer to sign a contract with a large agency named BMG Management in Atlanta! I was so excited to accomplish a huge goal. I still do have other agencies who are interested but I must be patient with those. I have learned so much from Lari and my experiences. I’ve learned that in this tough industry you always have to work to be your best that you can be physically and mentally and to be patient because not everyone has the same journey, but it does take time, hard work, and staying consistent with all what you are wanting to accomplish. One of my main supporters is my mom. She is the reason why I stay motivated and don’t give up. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer for the first time in July 2016. Then for a second time in September 2017. She is a big motivation
for me because she doesn’t stop fighting for her health no matter how hard it gets for her 24/7. To see her go through what she has gone through I have no reason to give up or stop trying with anything I do in life not just modeling and acting. My goals are to be very successful in modeling and acting and travel the world. To be able to represent a large brand of clothing, for example, and be part of large movies/shows projects. Since I enjoy and love working out and taking care of myself, I would love to be a fitness model as well. Eventually I want to move to a large city such as New York, LA, or any other large city where I can work as a successful model/actor. For now, I work a part time job and I am working on getting certified as a Personal Trainer. Locally in San Antonio I’ve been involved in many local fashion shows, I’ve walked for Neiman Marcus, and I’ve been on HEB’s Curbside online advertisements. I want to thank Lari Nel-
son and Mike Beaty for all their guidance. Lari is just like a mother to me and I appreciate for all she has done for me. I look back at my year in 2017 and I am proud and blessed to say I have experienced and accomplished a lot in a short amount of time.

Smooth Summer Legs
By Skincare Editor Crystal Holmes bio2skinstudio@gmail.com
She’s got legs, she knows how to use them. You may be familiar with this lyric from the ZZ Top classic “Legs”. In 1983, ZZ Top wrote an entire song dedicated to the power of gorgeous gams. Here are a few fun leg facts: As a highly paid model, Heidi Klum has her legs insured for $2 million (each!) Even more fascinating, Michael Flatley, star of Riverdance had his legs insured in 1999 for $40 million! The Instagram hashtag #legs has close to 15 million posts ranging from beach photos to workout images all the way to pictures of great looking calves in high heels. Let’s admit it, we love legs. All colors, shapes and sizes. Summer is that wonderful time of year where we get to show off our legs once again. As excited as we are, we definitely need to make sure we give our legs proper TLC before exposing them to the world. Besides all the Winter workouts you’ve been doing (right?), prepping legs for exposure means getting your skin ready and that usually means a little more than just lotion. Let’s start with dry brushing. Dry brushing your legs and backside is a well-known pro tip. Not only does it reduce cellulite, it helps stimulate the lymphatic drainage process, which can help give skin a glow. Next step is getting rid of any spider veins. Vein removal treatment is now affordable and efficient and with a simple tiny injection into each vein, you can literally watch those ugly purple lines dissolve before your eyes. The greatest investment, however, is permanent hair removal. Shaving and waxing are OK but more and more people are moving to a more lasting solution like IPL or laser. Permanently removing hair means getting time back and not worrying about annoying stubble, razor burn or ingrown hairs. Once all the prep is done, voila! Bring on the shorts and bikinis! With Summer upon us, now is the perfect time to make sure our legs are ready. We’d love to help you get started! Contact Bio2 Skin Studio at The Shops at La Cantera for current vein removal and hair removal promotions. Self care is not selfish.

MODEL BEHAVIOR y s s a n w Sha I truly think I got lucky when starting out my modeling career. I was getting my senior pictures taken when both my HMUA and photographer (Stephanie Eiland and Dane Miller) commented multiple times that I could definitely be a model. I brushed it off thinking their thoughts consisted of me just being pretty, because both statements were words I’d been hearing my entire life. I smiled and said thanks, then moved on. But a few months later Stephanie hit me up and asked if I wanted to do a shoot. I was surprised, but I told myself: “Why not? It wouldn’t hurt.” A few short weeks later I was at my first shoot with no idea of what to expect. I didn’t know if I would be “good” or “bad” at modeling. I didn’t know “looks” were a thing. I didn’t know posing wasn’t always what it looked like on the other side of the lens. I went in as blind as one could be, but in the end I was thinking about getting a portfolio together for the next step in what would become my modeling career. Flash forward a month and a half later and my portfolio shoot (with Larry Johnson, Stephanie Eiland, Elizabeth Wilkinson, and Melissa Prentice) went without a hitch. A mere month
later I was contacted much more often than I ever thought I would be to do shoots with so many new people all over the greater San Antonio area and beyond. I was ecstatic and beyond excited for the road ahead of me, and to this day- I still am.
Many of my clients ask for suggestions for the best “hidden gems” they should add to their travel bucket list. It depends if you are thrill seekers, foodies, grandparents, isolationists or millennials but below is a list of some of the top “up and coming” places taken straight from the best travel blogs. And no, unfortunately I have not visited many of these because I still have many well-known destinations that I am checking off my “must see” list (just done: cruise to and around Hawaii; next up: cruise around the Greek Islands) but I am privy to many respected travel consortiums to pull from and here are direct quotes from them: • Zambia and Zimbabwe, Africa - OK, so a place as beautiful as Victoria Falls is famous already. But the nearest airport has been recently expanded, giving thousands of international travelers easier access to this natural wonder on the border of two countries. Not far away is Hwange National Park, with a “ridiculous amount of wildlife” including one of the largest elephant populations in the world (well over 30,000). • Koh Rong, Cambodia - If you want a break from civilization, then you definitely need to visit the island of Koh Rong. No skyscrapers, noise or cars here. There’s only silence, some peaceful fishing villages, and unspoiled nature. Koh Rong is sometimes described as "What Thailand was like 20 years ago."
• Bonifacio, Corsica, France - Called the “City of Cliffs,” it has to be said that with its millenary fortress, its 5 historical monuments, its houses perched 60 meters over the sea and its 120 kilometers of coastline, Bonifacio has more than enough to satisfy curiosities and fulfill desires. • Phu Quoc, Vietnam - This Vietnamese island is the perfect antidote to busy Ha Long Bay, where you can celebrate nature in a more subdued environment. Almost everybody agrees Phu Quoc is primed to become Vietnam’s next hot destination, but it’s still “largely underdeveloped.” Freshen your bucket list with the planet’s up-and-coming spots—or stick to your travel wish list. Bill Bryson says: “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time….to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” I don’t know who Bill Bryson is, but I like the way he thinks! BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE HILL COUNTRY THE APPLE STORE IN MEDINA TEXAS Driving the Hill County is an incredible treat but the real reward is discovering a treasurer in small towns and incredible finds. You will discover just that in Medina, at the Apple Store and Patio Café at Love Creek Orchards. The store opened in 1982 by Carol and Baxter Adams shortly after they had planted the first commercial successful apple orchard in Texas. The apples are grown on dwarf root stock making the apple trees easy to manage. Love Creek Orchards was the first Commercial Apple Orchard in Texas and the first in the entire United States to grow their entire crop on dwarf root stock. Having thousands of trees was a new learning experience and finding ways to use the apples that were not lunch box quality but “oh so good” was a challenge as well. Texas apples are about 40 percent sweeter than any other apples grown because of our Texas micro climate that allows us to tree ripen the apples. It was those sweet apples that
led to handmade value added products. The Apple Store began to make strudels, turnovers, Apple Ice cream, Jams and Jellies and their famous apple pie! They now make over 50 different items made from apples and they will not disappoint your pallet! Love Creek has won many awards one being the Best Apple Pie in Texas, named by Texas Monthly Magazine. Their Apple Pies have also been featured on the Food Network and voted one of the top 10 Best Apple Pies in the USA and been featured in Southern Living. Each pie has 5 pounds of apples between two flaky handmade crusts. Add some famous Apple Ice Cream and warm Cider Sauce on top and you are in heaven! “We’ve had the opportunity to make our pies commercially available in stores and on shopping Web sites,” said Marketing Director Genie Strickland. “But we’ve chosen to stay focused on hand-made quality rather than quantity.” Twelve years ago, Bryan and Stacy Hutzler, purchased the orchards and store and have worked to expand the operation. You will fall in love with these apples and will want to grow them
too. Purchase trees at the Apple Store located at 14024 State Highway 16 North in Medina, the Official Apple Capital of Texas. Open 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays. The Patio Café is open daily 11am to 3pm. For more information on the store, café and orchard, call 830-589-2202, visit the Web site at www.lovecreekorchards.com or find them on Facebook.

Approximately 65% of Trinity students study abroad which is an excellent way to enhance our learning experiences. A Day in the Life: Trinity University Edition Life as a Trinity student is filled with excitement, opportunity, challenge, discovery and fun. A day in the life of a Trinity student usually involves intense discussions in class with professors and peers, spontaneous runs to Whataburger at midnight and lots of laughs about random things like squirrels chirping at each
other. A typical Trinity student is very industrious and have a lot on their plates. They like to challenge themselves and get very involved on campus with the things they are most passionate about. The average Trinity student, interestingly, is a double major or a single major with a minor or two. Approximately 65% of Trinity students study abroad which is an excellent way to enhance our learning experiences. From two week programs, to summer programs, and semester long excursions too, study abroad is a decision which is often life altering. One program I stumbled upon that sounded particularly interesting is entitled, “Study Abroad Nicaragua: Health and the Environment.” This program is led by Dr. Alfred Montoya, and Dr. Richard Reed and Dr. Nichicaua, three of Trinity’s best Sociology and Anthropology professors. This program also includes a course that focuses on “…major issues in International Health and the Environment, especially the link between environmental issues and human health.” The field trip portion to Nicaragua happens during spring break and, “…illustrates several course topics through first-hand experiences in nature reserves and visits with people working on successful grass-roots projects that address preventable causes of environmental degradation and human illnesses and death.” For me, as a student who fits the typical Trinity mold of an industrious and curious student, the field of Global Public Health is of particular interest. Once I graduate in 2019, I plan to apply for the Peace Corps and eventually travel worldwide working with organizations such as the WHO or the CDC solving issues related to food and nutrition. Even as a current junior, I already feel incredibly prepared for what I may face in the career world from tasks such as research, field work, or simply how to think analytically and question everything.

Professors aren’t simply older people who teach interesting things, they’re more like mentors.
During my time at Trinity thus far, I have enjoyed a wide variety of experiences which have contributed to molding the person I am today. I originally discovered Trinity because their track and field program recruited me. I ended up running for Trinity for two years. During the time I was making my college decision, I almost attended a school in Boston but, ended up being sold by the unique relationship Trinity professors have with their students. I find that at
Trinity, professors aren’t simply older people who teach interesting things, they’re more like mentors, role models, friends, and family. These professors help us Trinity students to discover who we are, discover our strengths, and steer us in a positive direction when exploring potential careers. I have enjoyed professors like Dr. Montoya in Anthropology and Dr. Becker in Psychology. Both professors have helped me to develop my own major entitled “Global Public Health: The Culture of Food and Nutrition.” This major is one that

was not offered at Trinity previously and now I am following my own path to graduation. Regarding extracurriculars, a Trinity student often carries an activist mentality and will engage in things they are passionate about with the intention of making a difference in one capacity or another. Our campus is pretty progressive and forward thinking and it is often a very enlightening experience to attend a lecture by guest speakers such as Jane Goodall or attend a diversity event highlighting the unique cultures we have within our student population. Trinity offers everything from the Trinity Diversity Council, to rock climbing club, the Global Health initiative, swing dancing, and so much more. Personally, I am very involved on campus and love every one of my organizations. I am a part of RUF (Reformed University Fellowship) which is a Christian group on campus, Trinity Tour Guides, Trinity Student

Ambassadors, and the Trinity Diversity Council. When not engaged with school related activities, Trinity students enjoy athletics and just fun in general. For those who are sports enthusiasts, soccer, volleyball, and basketball are the three top sports which draw the largest crowds. Fun for Trinity students doesn’t just happen on campus, there’s always plenty to explore within the city at some of our favorite frequented adventure spots. Outside of campus, I love to go see movies, shop, hang with friends, go on outdoor adventures, and travel. Fun outside of campus includes going on adventures to outdoorsy places like Enchanted Rock, Jacob’s Well, and Greune. Other popular day excursions include trips to the Pearl and Quarry for some shopping, the Riverwalk for some authentic Mexican cuisine and beautiful scenery, and of course hunting for the best taco truck down St. Mary’s street which also boasts exciting night
life, along with some amusement parks like Six Flags. Not to mention a lot of us are food enthusiasts and will sometimes spend our days at local cafes and coffee shops such as Revolucion on Broadway or frequenting popular places to get dinner with friends like Torchy’s Tacos in Lincoln Heights. There are also festivals that come to town such as the Pearl’s annual Tamalada which prepares tamales during Christmas time. The tamalada is one of my favorite events! Trinity is a place where I have grown as individual, advanced as a student, and progressed as a professional. Trinity and the friends I have made here have made a lasting impact on my life and for that I will be eternally grateful. #explore&learn #Tigerforlife ~Christiana ’19

Estate Planning Essentials From Jeremy Allen, JD Estate planning is the adult term used to describe the process of planning for the day you expire. Unfortunately, the only thing that’s certain in life is that it will end, and no one can really plan for the way they’ll make their exit. A well thought out and properly executed estate plan allows you to make the necessary decisions about what happens to you if the grand finale happens before you expect it to, and it takes the burden of making these decisions off of your family. The Basics This is no single set of documents that comprise an estate plan because no one’s estate is exactly the same. A skilled attorney can help evaluate your current position, anticipate future problems, and recommend the documents you need to ade-
quately protect yourself and your family. At a minimum, an estate plan should contain a Last Will and Testament the document you use to tell everyone what happens to all of your stuff when you die. The Extras While there is no perfect recipe, there are add-ins and garnishes to execute a savory estate plan. A Statutory Durable Power of Attorney allows you to designate an agent to make financial decisions for you if you are no longer able to make those decisions yourself (think, coma or dementia). A Medical Power of Attorney allows you to designate an agent to make medical decisions if you are no longer able. A Physician’s Directive is a popular document that allows you to tell your doctor (and family) whether you want to be kept on life support. And, you should probably also execute a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Release, so that your doctors,
insurers, and other medical providers can give your family access to your protected health information. Body Language If you have a particular request or concern regarding what happens to your body when you die (for example, you want to be cremated, or buried in a particular place), you can make those requests known in your will, and you can execute a document appointing an agent for the disposition of your remains. Crazy Talk Sometimes as we age, we remain physically healthy, but lose the ability to make decisions for ourselves because of illness such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. When we are no longer able to take care of ourselves, a guardian must be appointed to make those decisions for us. By executing a
Declaration of Guardian as part of your estate plan, you choose who acts as your guardian, if and when that becomes necessary. Otherwise, the Court gets to make that decision (which can be difficult, time consuming, and expensive). Thoughtful estate planning prevents a lot of turmoil when something bad happens. It ensures everyone knows what your wishes are and might prevent your family from fighting with one another about the best way to provide for your needs. It also helps ensure that your beneficiaries gets the greatest possible benefit from your estate. Without a will, the courts could end up making those decisions for you, and it could prevent loved ones from inheriting part of your estate. Find an attorney you trust to discuss your estate and your particular needs, and to help you develop a plan that accomplishes your goals.
OLD WINDOWS FIND NEW FOLLOWING
Old windows find new following. The value that windows play in the overall architectural character of a building should never be underestimated whether it’s a Greek revival, a Victorian Terrace or a San Antonio craftsman home. There is no other architectural feature that has as much responsibility. Windows are an integral part of the decorative and functional aspect of a home both inside and out. If you have a home and the windows are in good condition, it is often best to leave them alone. In today’s world of thermal efficiency it is commonly thought that replacing windows will cut the energy costs of the home, but if you examine the math of installing termopane windows, the saving is minimal if any. If you have a window that is leaking due to damage, has been poorly installed, or the window frame itself is in a state of disrepair, or the wood has rotted, it is necessary to improve the efficiency by either having the window restored by a master craftsman
or have a new window installed. It is often more cost effective, not to mention more historically correct and aesthetically pleasing to restore the windows to work as they were intended: to provide natural ventilation to cool our homes during almost half the year here in San Antonio. Lower utility bills are only a part of the benefit of living and breathing in fresh air as opposed to mechanically chilled or heated air in a hermetically sealed home. Justin Arecchi, a craftsman who works exclusively on old windows stresses that retaining the original windows may add value to the property. “As it becomes increasingly rare in our throwaway society to find original features in a home, many buyers have chosen a house because it had the original windows in good condition.” Preservation societies across the nation note that, as the type, size and configurations of windows varied dramatically through the history of American architecture they can be a critical indicator of
the age, style and architectural expression of a building. Arecchi has noticed that having the original antique glass in a window is an appealing prospect for lovers of older homes. The technology of making glass has also changed over time, creating a dramatically different appearance from antique glass. The older homes (pre-1880s) have window panes made from crown glass, made by spinning blown glass, which left bubbles and a heavy rippling effect. Later 19th and early 20th century window glass was made through a rolling process that left some rippling and gives historic windows a unique character and texture that can be seen from both inside and outside the house. Just As the eyes of a person can be a window to the soul – the windows of a house show the soul and reveal the true character of the home.

I wanted to be the best Insurance Agent, the best wife, the best mom, the best boss, the best friend!!
Monica Del Campo How did you get started in your career? I got started in my insurance career as a “temporary” job to help me pay for college. Do you have a career plan? Yes, my plan is to be the first San Antonio State Farm Agent to be a MOA. (MultiOffice Agent) What three pieces of advice would you give other women in business today? 1. God First, have an attitude of gratitude. 2. Take good care of your yourself. Your health matters, you cant take care of everyone if your not well. Without you, nothing else matters to your family. 3. Pay it forward. You learn, you teach. You get, you give.

What would you say are the top three skills anyone should have in business? Passion Grit Desire to serve others In your line of business, what motivates you? The opportunity to teach others. Today, I spoke to a doctor at a friend’s bbq. He is in his third year of remission from cancer and advised me on the importance of having a will for my family. We started talking about Life Insurance & the living benefits of Life Insurance. He asked me to tell him more about that. I explained that Life Insurance isn’t just to help pay for funerals, it can be a supplement to your retirement. You can for use it as an emergency if you need to, or it can help with your child’s college, or your daughter’s wedding, even your dream vacation, or large purchase! for me to be able to give him something back. How do you define success? When I hear someone say, Monica, you inspire me, or Monica, you have had a positive impact in my life. Who has been your greatest inspiration? My mother, Emma. She taught me how to be a strong, independent woman. Her work ethic inspired me to work hard and never give up, no matter what. What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career?
Paying my first death claim from a Life Insurance policy that I personally sold my insured, Molly. I attended the funeral and the memorial after the funeral. Molly’s daughter stood up, got on the microphone and THANKED me personally for being there for the family. If it wasn’t for Molly’s Life Insurance policy in place, she would’ve had the financial stress of figuring out how to give her mother the proper burial. Instead, she & her siblings were able to grieve in peace. I knew at that moment, I was born to do this.

kindergarten dream job is to hit the bulls eye as a Target employee. Jeremy and Jenna encourage their kids to explore, create and chase their dreams. The couple enjoys traveling, and Jeremy is a book-loving guitar player who just so happens to be a sharp shooting attorney. www.TheGreenAtPlumCreek.com www.SandstoneRidgeApartments.com paul.mcclain@capstonemanagement.com
Dr. Manuel Quiñones
of HealthTexas Medical Group Appointed to Texas Medical Board Dr. Manuel “Manny” Quiñones, a family practice physician with HealthTexas Medical Group, has been appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to serve on the Texas Medical Board. He is one of only five Texas doctors and the only one from San Antonio to be selected this year. The Texas Medical Board is the state agency tasked with regulating the practice of medicine state-wide. Its mission is to protect and enhance the public's health, safety and welfare, and ensure quality health care for the citizens of Texas through licensure, discipline and education. “This has been a lifelong dream for me,” said Dr. Quiñones. “It is such a great honor and the pinnacle of medicine.” While Dr. Quiñones is passionate about medicine, he feels especially strong about two areas which improve access to care for all patients in Texas. One is promoting the use of telemedicine, which allows patients in rural settings and under-served areas or patients with limited insurance coverage to access medical care via a computer. “You could be sitting on your back porch in Redford, Texas and access care from an excellent physician via computer when there are no other options,” he said. “Technology today grants us that access when well regulated. Of course, there is nothing like seeing your doctor in person, but
for some Texans, that option does not exist. It may sound futuristic, but the future is here.” He would also like to see mid-level providers – or advanced care practitioners and nurse practitioners – play a more prominent role, assisting physicians and possibly regulated to work more autonomously. “I’m very comfortable with the role of mid-level providers, their dedication and training, and I believe with proper regulation and support, they can do even more,” he said. “Physicians cannot do everything for everybody, everywhere all the time. There just aren’t enough of us. We have to work together as a team to provide access to care for all Texans.”

Protecting your business and employees
If you have employees, you know firsthand that the loss of a key employee can have a profound impact on business operations. When an employee leaves, customers who dealt directly with that person may worry about receiving their goods or services in a timely manner; suppliers may be concerned about getting paid for their deliveries; and staff morale can also take a dip as remaining employees worry about assuming a heavier workload. That’s why it’s important to make sure that your business is prepared to deal with the unexpected departure of a key employee which usually happens for one of three reasons: the employee chooses to resign, the employee becomes disabled, or they pass away. While life insurance cannot protect against employees choosing to leave, it is often used as a tool to help incentivize them to stay; deferred compensation plans are powerful vehicles for doing just this. Deferred compensation arrangements allow you to provide retirement income to select employees. The way it works is that you and the selected employee enter a contract that specifies the compensation you will pay out to him or her in the future. Since you may not set up a specific reserve fund in which a participant has a vested right, a life insurance policy is uniquely suited to informally finance a deferred compensation plan. The future of your business depends on attracting and retaining the right talent with the right tools. It’s also important to protect your business against the economic losses it may face as the result of a top employee’s death with the use of key person insurance. The way it works is that the business applies for and becomes the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy covering the key employee. If the insured employee dies, the business receives the policy proceeds. Deferred compensation and key employee insurance are benefits that are related exclusively to your top employees, but New York Life also has options that you can offer your entire team to help cultivate a rewarding work environment, such as life and disability insurance. These benefits can provide employees and their family’s peace of mind and added financial security, which can go a long way toward attracting and retaining valuable employees. As a business owner, you’ve worked hard to get where you are today. Having a contingency in place will allow you to focus on making the best possible decisions for the future your business. Hannah Marissa Wright Agent of the Month I was raised most of my life in San Antonio, Texas as the middle child out of five. I enjoy spending special moments with amazing friends, taking my two dogs on adventurous hikes and traveling with my big family. Growing up, my father coached my two older brother’s baseball, basketball and football teams. No surprise, but I found myself in team sports at a young age as well. I fell deeply in love with basketball and softball because of the valuable skills I learned working on a team and building mental discipline to strive to be the best. I have been in the world of business since I was 15 years old when I started my own nanny service. I was so successful at building a rapport of trust and reliability with the local parents in my church and in my community that I was able to hire other girls around my age to help fill the demand of my new clientele. After graduating in 2015, I jumped into the world of non-profit organization and communication. I loved the social good aspect of being a part of a movement that impacted people through support and education. I have always had a heart for helping people but the burning desire of being in business for myself was still a huge ambition of mine. I strongly believe in the power of networking and building relationships with people in other professional fields which is exactly what lead me to New York Life. As Agent, I get to unite my love for social good through education and meeting people’s needs with the personal joy and satisfaction of being in business for myself but not by myself. My mission is to bring value to everyone I come into personal contact with and to go above and beyond the industry standard. I am convinced that everyone wants to grow and keep moving forward so I make it a point to make that possible by creating a proper financial strategy that provides peace of mind, protection and growth of assets and building legacy for the next generations to come.
