I tend to scribble down notes, lyrics or just random thoughts on pieces of paper, backs of cigarette packs, sometimes on my shirt cuff. Rock ní roll is closest thing I’ve got to a spiritual power. Itís been the higher voice in my life and itís never let me down." - John Waite Countless musicians of far lesser accomplishment have probably made similar statements regarding their own personal creative process, but when the confession comes from John Waite - whose been successfully writing, recording and performing some of the most listenable, enduring and appreciated popular music for more than 35 years - one cannot help but both recognize and marvel at the shimmering legacy of this British born rock star.

At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. In 1971, despite positive response for the albums Town And Country (1969) and Rock On (1970), Frampton decided to strike out on his own. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others. Frampton contributed to George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and Nilsson's Son of Schmilsson, before launching his solo career with the debut album Wind Of Change (1972). He toured extensively over the next few years, promoting the albums Frampton's Camel (1973), Somethin's Happening (1974) and Frampton (1975).

Local Talent of the Month

Sebastien De La Cruz

sebastienmariachi@yahoo.com

“I enjoy looking into the audience and making people happy. If I see someone smiling or crying, I know I have touched their heart through my music. ~Sebastien De La Cruz

It was mainstream America's first real prime time glimpse into the beautiful music of Mariachi; and it was heard through the voice of the talented Sebastien De La Cruz. During the summer of 2012, the international talent show known as "America's Got Talent" gave national exposure to Texas' very own "Golden Cowboy," Sebastien De La Cruz. NBC producers along with millions of viewers fell in love with his charismatic and respectful persona. Sebastien, along with Mariachi Charros de Oro, catapulted mariachi music into the national spotlight, America got to hear beautiful renditions of "Besame Mucho," "Granada" and even a mariachi arrangement of "New York, New York." Before Sebastien and his Charros de Oro became a household name, he made his mark on his hometown of San Antonio. At the age of five he told his parents he wanted to sing mariachi music, with much hard work and determination, he began taking vocal lessons under the instruction of Ms. Michelle Alma Quintero. He began learning some traditional mariachi songs and began singing at local community events with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation. At a very young age, Sebastien has proven himself to be among the best young mariachi vocalist in the U.S. He has been privileged to open for and perform with many notable musicians and vocalists, he’s performed with the San Antonio Symphony, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the San Diego Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. During the NBA Finals in 2013 Sebastien performed the National Anthem during two national televised NBA finals games. Sebastien gained worldwide exposure for wearing a traditional Mariachi traje while singing the National Anthem. Even the President of the United States, Mr. Barack Obama tweeted his support to Sebastien. The San Antonio Spurs and AT&T Center honored Sebastien with a mural of him. Sebastien has released his second CD entitled “Tu y Yo” and has appeared on numerous TV news, talk and entertainment programs in the U.S. He has starred in the following short films “Squeeze box”, “Green Ghost.” and “Born of a Killer,” in which he co-starred with actors Ricardo Chavarria and Jesse Borrego. Sebastien has already make his television acting debut on NBC’s Telenovela with Ms. Eva Longoria. Former Secretary of State Mrs. Hillary Clinton requested Sebastien to perform for her at her campaign rally for President. He has also performed for the Secretary of the Interior Sally Gewell and Vice President Joe Biden. Sebastien has been presented with numerous awards including the 2013 Rising Start Award and the 2014 Dynamic Youth Award. He is currently a sixth grader student at Kitty Hawk Middle School, where he is an A&B student and a class leader.

Local Talent of the Month

Katy Mckenzie Let Freedom Ring by Cole Ruiz

Katy Mckenzie’s debut EP, Freedom, looks to be as promising as her recent burst in popularity. McKenzie’s music embodies the sound of the soul. Sweet like Taylor Swift, as timeless as Tom Petty, Katy radiates all-American coolness. While many have likened the young musician to a younger Swift, there is no question Mckenzie has distinguished her sound from her idols, while emulating their passion for entertainment. At the age of 12, Katy tasted destiny, and started scribbling lyrics and paving her way into the San Antonio music scene. Her appetite for songwriting drove her to master the strings of her guitar. Inspired by small town stories, Mckenzie’s music is reminiscent of modern Nashville country pop, yet true to the soul of South Texas. “Freedom,” her new record set to be released on April 9, reflects the euphoric attitudes of youth in modern America. “It's just about doing what you love, being who you are,” she said, “feeling free to do just that, no matter what other people think.” Watching – and listening – to Taylor Swift inspired Mckenzie’s first lyrics. Her fans can thank the Eagles for Mckenzie’s new profound lyrical flair, and mellow style. “I saw the documentary, History of the Eagles, when I was 17 and I fell hard for Glenn [Frey], Don [Henley] and all their music and the songwriting.” A year ago, my dad gave me the first album he ever got which he traded for a pair of walkie-talkies,” Katy told me, “It was The Eagles' Hotel California.” Music is not the only art-form Katy draws inspiration from. She is a free spirit, drawing inspiration from literature, film, and paintings. She attributes “Hey,” a promising new song on her upcoming release, to the Marauders’ “love story that was never told” in the Harry Potter books. In true artistic fashion, she prides herself with the imaginative ability to extract inspiration from anything that has a story needing to

be told. “Situations that happen in life sometimes can just spark an idea for a song,” she smiled, “Usually it's someone else's life though. Mine is not that exciting.” That is all about to change. Now she is the cool girl on the block, harmonizing melody with verse, and stunning audiences throughout the Greater San Antonio region. At this early stage in her career, McKenzie has been featured on KABB Fox 29’s Daytime at Nine with Kimberly Crawford, KENS 5’s Great Day SA with Bridget Smith, KSAT 12’s SA Live with hosts Jeff Roper and Fiona Gorostiza, WOAI Focus on South Texas with Erin Nichols, and Where’s Cleto on News4 San Antonio Today. Katy's sudden rise to local fame can be attributed to her performance at the 2015 San Antonio Mayoral and City Council Inauguration, and has earned accolades such as San Antonio Monthly’s Local Musician of the Month. What is most refreshing about the local icon, is her contagious dedication to inspire good will. Mckenzie has enjoyed performing for such charities as the Wounded Warriors Project, the Unsung Heroes, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and Inspire a Child USA. For 2016 she has fostered partnerships with The Children’s Shelter of San Antonio and Ride For Kids, an organization benefiting pediatric brain tumor research. Perhaps she draws her brilliance from the liberating feeling only offered by wholesome philanthropy. Make no mistake about it, Katy Mckenzie is here to stay and is sure to stay true to her roots. It is this all-American attitude that can be heard emanating from the undertones of her music.

The ladies of the night…market(The People’s Nite Market), Valeria and Jovanna give off the impression that they’ve been inseparable for many years because they are always laughing and everywhere together but the reality is they just met in 2013 when they both moved back home from L.A. and NYC. It was last year in March when they both decided San Antonio was missing something. Missing a market that would cater to those who worked during the weekends or loved to sleep in on the weekends and just couldn’t make it to the farmers markets throughout the city. Jovanna lived and worked in New York for eight years, working with City Year-New York, and graduating from FIT, a premier fashion school. Valeria lived in L.A. raising a daughter for sixteen years pursuing an acting career and working with at risk youth. Both moved back began working in their childhood neighborhoods, Val doing outreach through nutrition advocacy and Jovanna with community gardens. Both passionate about accessibility to healthier options in nutritional deserts and underserved communities they created, “The People’s Nite Market”. Both have a passion for travel, dirty jokes, food politics and the role food plays in their community. When starting the business with one another they realized they had personal compatibility which was important for them. They shared the same vision of what the market would become. Both of their experiences in their respective “homes away from home” influenced the need for inclusion and cultural diversity with their vendors. Accessibility is the magic word! Accessibility to healthy food and fresh produce are location, price and time. Many underserved communities don’t have the option of fresh produce or healthier options in their grocery stores (I.E. Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods). For many families traveling to these places is also an obstacle. In addition, shopping at those places can be costly. A local farmers market can eliminate distance as well as be cost efficient to many of these communities. Markets around the world are places where people gather to exchange goods and crafts, and talents, creating economy in communities. They incubate small businesses, give them exposure to the public in a more cost effective way without a brick and mortar. The vendor pays a small booth fee to sell straight to the public, creating clientele and customer base along the way. The ultimate goal for many vendors is to have their own physical business. During that time the city was discussing ways to bring attention back to La Villita, with regular programming, we approached the city with the idea of hosting a night market, and under the Cine y Arte program, and we piloted The People’s Nite Market in August of last year. The market also ties into Downtown Tuesday’s, which makes parking easier because city operated lots and meters are free.

With the cities support and learning the processes and procedures of producing a market, along with hours of research we learned a lot about night markets around the world. One great learning and growing pain was the Health permit for the food vendors. They must purchase a monthly license that is only valid at one market, and not at multiple markets. The vendor must purchase a permit for every farmers market they attend per month, per market. A process that has been both frustrating and expensive for the vendors and producers. They decided to approach city councilman Roberto Trevino who has been implemental in getting the cities all around support for the market and Councilwoman Shirley Gonzalez. They are in the process of getting the permit policy changed for the vendors. They approached communities from different cultural backgrounds, because they wanted the market to include the different cultures that are becoming San Antonio’s overall identity as a world class city, and they needed to reflect that at The People’s Nite Market. We are blessed with great vendors: Berbere Ethiopian, Cocina Heritage, Soap Addicts, Tracy jewelry, Scarlett Dove. People can go to one of our markets and find unique gift items from local artisans and crafters, try foods they never tried and the best thing about it is that it’s all downtown every Tuesday night. TPNM wants to create access to local produce in the heart of the city and will waive any farmer’s, urban gardeners, or rancher’s booth fees, ($35 value). They are aware of the work farmers and ranchers put into their products and understand the overhead involved in participating in markets. Future Projects: We will be pitching a travel show that focuses on markets in other areas Texas, the country and world. Stay Tuned! (Photos By: David Coy)

CHEF OF THE MONTH Jesus Nuncio, Jr.

22211 W Interstate 10, Ste 1101 San Antonio, Texas (210) 272-0758 www.difrabo.com

I was raised in southwest Texas in the small town of Boerne and its surrounding areas. Both of my parents were born in small towns in Mexico and raised with traditional beliefs, which I believe we're the foundation that helped me build and develop the strong work ethic that I have today. While as a cook at LaVista Bar and Grill, I met Chef Yudi from Indonesia, that's where I got my first taste of working under a chef that took pride in what he did and started learning kitchen basics. I met Chef David Holtzman while enrolled at the Art Institute in Austin for Culinary Arts. He is probably the one that I would credit the most in making me realize that I wanted to take myself from being a line cook to becoming a chef. A couple of years later I got hired at Cypress Grille in Boerne which is where I met chef Tom Stevens and Chef Paul Thompson. Chef Tom has got to be one of the most influential male figures I had in my life. He's the one that made me realized the level of standards that I wanted to hold myself to as a chef. He took me into his kitchen and turned my life upside down. He showed me what cuisine could be and showed me how to bring out my value in life and in the work that I do. I would like to thank him for the majority of the success that I have had as a young chef. I spent about a year working under Chef Tom and Chef Paul, with their guidance I was able to refine my skills to a level I had only dreamed of. In 2015 I was introduced to Mr. And Mrs. Franco who welcomed me to there beautiful restaurant and made me a part of their wonderful family, they had the confidence to let me take charge of their kitchen. As executive chef, I want to execute their vision of De Frabo that they have always dreamed of. I will forever be grateful to Mr and Mrs Franco for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills and abilities in such a beautiful restaurant.

BURGER OF THE MONTH!

BURGERFI

Your local BURGERFI isn’t some industrialized fast food giant. They were started in a gourmet kitchen, by gourmet Chefs. Not knowing fast food, the back of the house is built to be less burger joint, more five-star restaurant. When they needed a sauce, the Chefs didn’t call a food supplier. They started chopping. Mixing. Cooking. Making better choices. BURGERFI is better to people: serving only the finest natural, certified angus burgers, dogs, hand-cut fries, frozen custard, craft beer, wine and more. They’re better to the environment: each location is built to environmentally sustainable best practices and includes earth-friendly elements. And, they’re better to animals: sourcing from one of the best ranches in the country. Where cattle roam free. Breathe mountain air. Eat grass and are treated humanely. BURGERFI never waivers from this high standard. This doesn't come easy. Certainly not cheap. Truth is there are simpler ways to put a burger on a bun. But, they're not better.

Best Steakhouse of the Month

Chama meaning “flame” in Portuguese, is the essence of an authentic, Brazilian steakhouse. This “flame” also describes the “flame passion” the gauchos, Brazilian cowboys, have for their culture and tradition. This Heritage spans back centuries as European immigrants migrated to Southern Brazil. In the vast plains and fertile lands, a region known as Pampas, the gauchos tend to large herds of cattle as they roam and graze through Southern Brazil. At the end of the day, they gather around the churrasco, the fire pit or grill, to eat and share stories. Our steak won't be served to you lying flat on a plate. It will be served quite hot, very adeptly seasoned, by a swift-moving gaucho (trained Brazilian chef), carrying it vertically on a large skewer. They'll slice it and you'll grab each slice with a pair of nifty little tongs provided at your place setting. The service and carving of the meats are controlled by each individual guest with a red and green sided card. The green side indicates that you are ready and waiting on meats. When you've reached your limit, turn the red side up. Have small tastes at first; there are many kinds of meat (12 in total). These include bacon-wrapped filet, marinated chicken drumsticks, lamb, pork and beef ribs, and the house specialty, Picanha, or the prime cut of sirloin. For our vegetarian guests, we do offer a bountiful salad bar with over 30 different items. Come experience the essence of Southern Brazil right here at Chama Gaucha.

SA CHEF OF THE MONTH

CHEF JOHN O'LARNIC

Born and Raised in South East San Antonio, Chef John O'Larnic did not follow a traditional path to earning his culinary certification. A 20 year veteran of San Antonio food, he has worked all over town. Starting out as a line cook, but yearning for more, he found himself working for a new food concept in Schertz, Texas owned by the local Grocery company H-E-B. About a year after he started with Greats, H-E-B Grocery Company was opening a new concept called Central Market. The grand opening of Central Market forced a change in business for Greats, and the grocery store in Schertz now had an expanded hot food selection where Greats once was. John was able to transfer to Central Market, once there, he was able to work under Chef Tan Nguyen. One of the first assignments I had was as a specials chef. We would get random items in the kitchen that were not on our regular menu. I remember chef giving me the rundown of what came in, and sometimes he would give me tips on how to prepare it, and other times, I had to be really resourceful to bring a solid dish to the customer. I remember cooking ostrich, rattlesnake, rabbit, pheasant, monkfish, various shellfish, and every day it was like being on Chopped! I not only had to create a menu, but also set the pricing for the dishes. It was truly a Chef driven concept. I got really good at making sauces, and tightened up my technical skills during my time in this role. It really allowed me to take a deep dive into cooking techniques, flavor profiles, and learn how to use a variety of proteins, vegetables, and grains. Giving Back: After Hurricane Ike, John was asked to go as part of the team to help get Houston operations back on line. It was exhausting but satisfying. Community Service is something I enjoy, Working for H-E-B has afforded me the opportunity to participate in events at local farmers markets, Demoing at the Pearl Farmers Market, Participating in Culinaria events Taste of the Northside, The Food Truck Event, and The Grand Tasting. I try to jump in with some of my friends also when they need a hand in local food events. Giving back is key! The San Antonio community has been extremely supportive, I have had the honor of participating in the Nutcracker Sweets events which benefits the San Antonio Family Violence Prevention Services. My current role as a Cooking Connection Manger allows me to help people cook more often. I really enjoy having an opportunity to share what I have learned along the way on my food journey. Nothing improves your cooking as much as using the highest quality, freshest ingredients you can find.

It's citrus season, and in San Antonio, the days have been hot, so you will need something to quench your thirst, try this refreshing lemonade. Re-Hydrating Lemonade 2 qts water (filtered or distilled) 2 lemons 1/4 stevia in the raw 1/2 cucumber peeled and sliced 1 small slice fresh ginger (optional] 8 basil leaves (chiffonade) Dissolve stevia into water, add juice from 1 1/2 lemons, and stir. Slice ginger, cucumber and remaining 1/2 lemon and stir into mixture. Chiffonade basil and add. Give a quick stir and serve. At room temp, your body will absorb the nutrients better, but this can be very refreshing served over ice!

Life Changes are events that cause one’s life to alter. by Margaret Kondoff, Majestic Massage

Over the years, many of us remember all of our “first time” experiences. Of course , not all were happy, exciting, or memories we enjoy recaling much less discussing with others. We somehow managed to trek through and survive. Admittedly, not with much gracefulnes...Whether these life changes are positive or negative, we all respond differently. Remember the first time you landed a “real” job or position. Then rembember the first time you moved on to another opportunity-leaving behind the workplace and people you had become accustom to seeing every day. Think about the first time you met that “great” guy or gal. Don’t forget about when you discovered that he/she is not so “great” with you y anymore. We W all know about the first time, and many times after that, when we lost someone in death. Our bodies, heart and mind feel f el all of this pain. fe The birth of a chil child, changing jobs, moving house, entering a new relationship or financial owes can cause stress levels to rise and worse worsening of our health. Stress is a consequence of these life changes. Stress is our body’s way of responding to things tthat require positive action. There are positive actions you can take to better cope and move forward through our life changes. One of these actions is Massage The Therapy. Massage as a healing tool has been around for thousands of years in many cultures. It does more than just relax a the body and mind. Physiological and Psychological changes occur. Massage therapy is becomax ing a more integral part of the healing and recovery treatment. So at your next m massage session, skip the tossing of rose petals on your massage table sheets. Opt out of the feather tickling on your back. bac Get a real Massage Therapy session that will positively contribute to your well being.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy conducted with an experienced Licensed Massage Therapist • Stress reduction • Decreased anxiety and depression • Pain management • Lowering of blood pressure • Enhanced sleep quality • Improved concentration • Improved circulation • Reduced fatigue “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us...” Joseph Campbell

GOOD CARBS VS. BAD CARBS

By Fitness Editor Skie Molinar

There is so much confusion on which carbohydrates to eat and what time of day to eat them. People that come to me for advice are usually extremely confused because of all the literature they read on different diets, etc. As a Fitness Professional and Former Professional Bodybuilding competitor, and current Figure competitor, I’ve had to manipulate my metabolism and try different ways to get my physique as lean as possible to get in competition form. From all my years of experience, I can only share what’s worked for me & my former and current clients. It also depends on client’s age, specific goals and lifestyle? The difference between good carbohydrates (Carbs) bad carbohydrates is the Glycemicc Index. The Glycemic Index (GI) is the rate in which carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels. ls. The Glycemic Index number runs from 0-100. Low (GI) foods will be below 55 and high (GI) foods will be over 70. You may want to get a book on information that has a list of Glycemic ycemic numbers in foods that are high GI and low GI. SKIE MOLINAR

Examples: LOW GI Oatmeal Apple Grapefruit Strawberries Brown rice Sweet potato

What I’ve learned throughout the years, is the best time to eat your low GI foods are in the morning hours with the last carb meal no later than 3-4 p.m. You need to have the slower burning carbs for energy through the day instead of eating them at night before your bed time. As for competitive bodybuilders, etc., depending on their goals, they may want to eat high GI carbs after their workouts to replace depleted glycogen stores, with GI numbers of 75-100. Vegetables and fruits are good carbs. Most vegetables have a low GI. You can load up on vegetables and not get fat. Limit your fruits to 2-3 a day and choose low GI fruits. Unless you choose a high GI fruit post workout.

VITALITY in ART EDUCATION By David Anthony Garcia, SA Monthly Art Editor

In this day and age of standardized testing and attaining the tools necessary to make the grade in our school systems, the need for teaching art techniques and awareness has diminished. Some of our school districts have eliminated elementary fine arts from their curriculum all together in order to focus on the test. The irony is that developing artistic notions and skills enhances an individual’s ability to think abstractly, have spatial awareness and recognize the opportunities to create alternative outcomes for rote procedures. As a classroom art and reading teacher at Lackland Elementary School for the past 16 years I have had the wonderful opportunity to witness many “Aha” moments when a student realizes the correlation between the art they are creating with math, science and the language arts. Providing more opportunities for extracurricular art experiences and a wonderful resource for San Antonio are the Art Education programs at venues such as the Witte Museum, the DoSeum, Blue Star’s Mosaic program, SaySí, Southwest School of Art, the McNay Museum of Art and the San Antonio Museum of Art. It is a great pleasure to be a museum art educator for the past 12 years continuing to work for the McNay and SAMA, each who have a number of on site and outreach programs. Recently providing an activity at a VASE high school art competition for the McNay, working Family days, to working at Haven for Hope every other Monday for SAMA keeps one grounded and cognizant of the dire thirst for SAMA Family Day continuing art education for kids of all ages.

SAMA Family Day

SAMA Haven for Hope

VITALITY in ART EDUCATION continued

The Director of Education at the McNay Museum of art Mrs. Kate Carey states: “The McNay's art education program aims to engage a diverse audiences dialogue about modern art. I see our museum, grounds, and all our programs seeking to cast a very wide net such that we offer something for learners of all ages and interests. Whether it's the drop-in nature of an ArtFULL Wednesday program for adults or the sensory experience of ArtStrolls for infants, I'm proud of different opportunities the McNay offers to engage visitors. Also, we remain committed to reaching San Antonio students from kindergarten through college through free docent-led tours and bus transportation reimbursement. Check out this teen collaboration with Say Sí.” https://vimeo.com/155158925

Museum educator, Family and Public program Coordinator for the McNay, Mrs. Sheena Solitaire adds: “I think that families in San Antonio are excited for cultural activities they can do together that expose the family to art but also allow them to create fun experience together, from babies at ArtStrolls to adults at films or lectures you can see that San Antonio families value the arts!”

The Family and Community Programs manager for SAMA, Ms. Noel Bella Merriam states: “Our museum education is an integral part of the community. We provide programming for families and children with a primary goal of having them feel comfortable at the museum while gaining new ideas and inspiration for ways to make and think about art. Additionally, we partner with ten San Antonio schools through our school partnership program. Every student in these schools visits the museum for a combined gallery and art-making experience. These partnership schools allow us to develop a long-term relationship with the students and teachers. We are also working on a literacy through the arts program - our goal is for every 2nd grader in SAISD to visit the museum & participate in the program because we believe art makes you smart. We also believe that it's never too soon to start bringing your children to the museum. We are also fortunate to have summer scholarships for talented students generously provided by the San Antonio Museum of Art Docent Association.”

Awareness is key to the vitality of our future. Museums recognize this and are making San Antonio a more wonderful place to be through their amazing collections and dedication to the community through Art Education.

Artist of the Month

Seth Camm

Recently named the 2014 Artist of the Year by the San Antonio Art League, Seth Camm is San Antonioís go-to artist for fine portraiture. Since the time he spent studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, he has worked at his craft, learning the language of the human face and the form of the human figure. He has had the privilege of serving as apprentice to world renowned European artist Odd Nerdrum and studying under portrait giant Nelson Shanks. Seth draws from a lineage of master oil painters, borrowing technique and inspiration from such greats as Caravaggio, Vincent Van Gogh, and Rembrandt. Besides gleaning from them lessons in lighting, mood, and theme, Camm has followed the example of artistic giants and found inspiration in painting the poor. For 18 years, he has worked on a series of paintings of Americaís homeless which culminated in 2013 in a solo exhibit at the Noyse Museum of Fine Art in Oceanville, New Jersey. He is currently creating a non-profit organization called The Stone Pillow to fund his continuing work in this arena. Meanwhile, Camm delights in painting any number of subjects, including San Antonioís fine homes, businesses, and citizens. He works by commission and has created portraits of people in every stage of life. He has even been known to paint peopleís beloved homes. Working primarily from live figures, Seth believes the true essence of a person is best captured when he can work with his subject to create the perfect scene and mood. “I can’t capture the same beauty working from a photograph,” he says, attributing much of his success to the cooperative experience between artist and subject. In a usual work week, Camm balances his efforts between painting commissioned portraits, creating decorative still lifes, and continuing his work with the city’s homeless. Local gallery J.R. Mooney represents him, showing much of his decorative work as well as portraiture. You can see a selection of Seth’s work online at www.sethcamm.com, or view the whole of his homeless project at www.7yearsforgotten.com.

Invest in Yourself Award season has officially come to an end and the red carpet beauty trends this year did not disappoint. Fresh, glowing skin, shimmery eyes with pretty lashes and either a strong or natural lip. The look was everywhere and it was oh, so beautiful. I call this minimalmakeup look the anti-Kardashian, not because there is anything wrong with going glam but because weíve seen the strong made-up look for so long that it was refreshing to see the return of natural beauty. As a society, we have become very good at masking our imperfections. Highlighters, concealers and foundations have become so essential that our closest friends may not even By Beauty Editor recognize us without our full facial armor. We’ve become enamored with the concept Crystal Holmes cnj.townes@gmail.com of shadowing and contouring (which is still very artistic) but we need to remember how freeing it is to feel confident without a stitch of makeup on. This is where the love for my job comes in, both as spa owner and beauty editor. If you are already comfortable with the condition of your skin, that’s wonderful! But it’s not the norm. Most people have some skin concern that keeps them from feeling their best - pigmentation from sun damage or pregnancy, acne, acne scars, fine lines, facial hair, wrinkles. Imagine yourself with fresh, glowing, youthful looking skin! At Bio2 Skin Studio, we have treatment options that will dramatically improve almost any skin concern. If your goal is to post a filter-less selfie and have all your friends comment #beautygoals, we’ve got you covered. If your goal is to create a beautiful poreless canvas for your makeup, we can do that too. If all you want is to go to Target make-up free without worrying that you will see someone you know, we totally understand! Whatever your goal, that becomes our goal too. Every day of your life, YOU take center stage. The more confident you feel about yourself, the better you will present yourself to the world. You donít need to walk a red carpet to have a reason to invest in yourself. You Are Worth. It. See you at the studio!

Lorena HernandezMonroe Humanitarian with Style By Linda J Bottjer

Some reach an age where birthdays are shunned, Not Lorena Hernandez Monroe! Every March 8th, she celebrates to the fullest by inviting family, friends and complete E strangers to have fun while fundraising and this year’s birthday was no exception s with w Monroe who invited San Antonio to dance the night away. Hailed as San Antonio’s “Socialite of the Year 2016” by SA Monthly Magazine, her humanitarian efforts is a long“ held h habit. “When people asked me, as a child, what present I wanted, I always told them to donate to a charity,” she said. For her 2016 soiree’, Monroe, also known as “Bonita”, d spotlighted San Antonio-based, First-MD‘s Extimacy Masquerade Gala: "The Art, s Science & Mood of Fashion" which was held on April 13th. The foundation, known for S innovative research and scientific treatment, focuses on advancing the treatment of i severe mood disorders such as post-traumatic stress, affecting many veterans, to s bipolarism and depression that remain treatment resistant. b Born in Puebla, Mexico, her first memories are from the beautiful town of Cholula, Puebla which is known for its 365 churches. At age seven she moved to Anchorage, P Alaska where her family was among the city’s first Hispanic residents. Bonita’s A family all had dreams and desires to transform aspirations into realities. Bonita’s f dream was shared with many young girls world-wide. While watching televised beauty pageants full of d glamour and fashion, she prayed for a crown of her own. After leaving her home at age 15 she lived in a shelter. “There, I saw how others live and how strangers’ kindnesses can change lives.” She recalled the comfort those in the shelter experienced from second-hand clothing and food donations given to them by others. This is where Bonita learned the true joy of giving. Prayer provided inspiration for her first entrepreneurial effort – a cleaning service. By employing other female shelter residents in a new small business, she gave them opportunities for new skills, jobs and the opportunity to care for their children with pride. Looking past her high energy, impeccable makeup and gorgeous fashion, Monroe’s deep faith still directs her life. “Nothing happens without prayer first” she declares. Bonita fell in love with San Antonio during her 1984 journey from Alaska to San Antonio to visit her sister and decided to stay. Rather than looking for a job, she decided to start her own enterprise selling fashion wear door-to-door. Soon her popular fashion wear house parties were occurring throughout the city, enlightening local women on ways to enhance their own inner beauty. Bonita’s cosmetology certification, coupled with her innate style sense and sales skills, caught the attention of Saks’ Fifth Avenue, the acclaimed New York-based retailer in search of Latina personal shoppers. At Saks’ Fifth Avenue, Bonita promoted premiere designer couture including Oscar de la Renta, Chanel and Versace. Her fashion commitment remains strong through her non-stop efforts to showcase young designers and new trends. By 1996, another dream was fulfilled when Bonita was crowned Mrs. Mexico. In 2006, a second regal title was added during her reign as Mrs. San Antonio. Unable to rest on past accomplishments, Bonita established her own Spanishlanguage television “Dancing for Passion” series. She now owns BonitaNatural.com, a direct-sales’ cosmetics company, and “LorenaOnline.com”, a web-TV company. The latter two endeavors allow others to enhance their lives, an important component of Monroe’s positive outlook on life. She advocates maintaining a belief in one’s own abilities and absolutely refuses to accept any negativity in her private life or business career. With San Antonio having over 300 non-profit organizations, she and her husband, David, CEO of The Telesis Group, carefully select where their assistance is most beneficial. Thus the sponsorship of First-MD’s fashion-oriented April Gala is a perfectpairing. Surprises remain a Monroe hallmark at all her charitable events. With a coquettish lilt in her voice, Lorena Hernandez Monroe invites all of San Antonio, and Texas,to discover them all throughout all her upcoming events in 2016’

Beauty expert Danielle Cunningham loves finding the latest trends in the beauty world, including what is taking place right here in San Antonio. I have always loved the mobile beauty concept, but the girls at “Beauty and The Bus took the mobile concept to the next level. Imagine a 40 foot luxury bus staffed with the ultimate glam squad. All your salon and spa needs right at your door, your special event venue, or anywhere else you can imagine! Convenience is obviously what many women want so the mobile concept is key , however the design of this bus was what I completely fell in love with it. The size of the bus is a beast, so that gets your attention by the size and amazing photo on the bus. You walk inside and its a girls dream with a trendy sense of style and you fall in love with Jovahna and her mother. Jovahna Gonzalez is the mastermind behind this state of the art mobile salon. I met Jovahna Gonzalez and her mother at a Girls Night Out party with Fashion Diva. Her mother, Juanita Gonzalez, also works on the bus and has been in the hair business for over 30 years which has inspired Jovahna to be in the beauty industry. And this is one of the reason why beauty and The Bus was created. These ladies pride themselves in bringing you outstanding beauty services, top of the line health and beauty products and a fun engaging experience! With an outstanding staff, top-of-the-line products, and unmatched comfort this bus is what you need for your next big event or any salon or spa services right at your door step!!! Go like their facebook page Beautyandthebus and stay tune for their grand opening in April. These ladies are the next up and coming thing in the beauty world!!!

A Beauty Goldmine I found a beauty goldmine when I found New Images at 2104 NW Military Hwy in Castle Hills. This place is truly a hot spot for beauty! From the gorgeous iron door to the magnificent crystal chandelier, New Images screams class. But those things aren’t all that makes this place worth visiting. “SPRING CLEANING” It’s that time of year! SPRING and with it Spring cleaning time for the house, car, office and…..your make-up bag. Yes, it’s time to grab that bulging, overstuffed, perhaps much too worn out make-up bag and do a really thorough cleaning out! As you sift through the bottles, tubes, jars and wands does it hit home just how wide an array of beauty products there are available to us? All those glorious choices just sitting at the bottom of your favorite make-up tote. Lustrous, once thrilling choices have now turned into hard decisions. To throw out or not to throw out the barely there scrap of favorite Tuscan Rose lipstick? To salvage or not to salvage the last crumbled bits of that Peaches ‘n Cream contour? Those are the questions. You know your favorite colors and brand choices inside out BUT let me ask you, do you REALLY know your make-up? Take a moment to read the label of ingredients on that favorite shade of lipstick or your go-to bottle of shampoo. Are you left scratching your head in confusion or mayhap repulsed by some of the vaguely familiar sounding additives? What exactly is Diphenylmethanone? Well Ladies and Gents, as an ever growing populace of conscientious consumers, let me help shed some light. Here is a list of a few of the most commonly used terms and ingredients you should be aware of:

TERMS NATURAL – Implies that ingredients are extracted directly from plants or animal products as opposed to being produced synthetically. HYPOALLERGENIC – Implies that products are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Also known as “Dermatologist Tested”, “Sensitivity Tested” or even “Allergy Tested”. NON-COMEDOGENIC – Suggests that product does not contain common pore-clogging ingredients that could lead to acne. Also less commonly known as “Non-Acnegenic”. FRAGRANCE FREE – Implies that product has no perceptible odor. Beware that fragrance ingredients most likely are added to mask any offensive odor from the raw materials. ALCOHOL FREE – traditionally meant product does not contain ethyl (grain) alcohol. However, other (fatty) alcohols, such as cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl, or lanolin may be in use. VEGAN – Is not derived from an animal source nor does it harm animals directly or indirectly such as testing. Also may be labeled as “Cruelty Free”. *Fun Fact: Only 30-40% of cosmetic manufacturers participate in the FDA program. The suggested guidelines have not changed since 1938.

INGREDIENTS DIMETHICONE – A group of silicone molecules. It gives makeup products a slip and slide feel and lubricates the skin without feeling heavy. As well, since it helps with redness and inflammation it is usually used with harsher ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to mask the irritation. It is found in most beauty products; moisturizers, body lotions, sunscreen, anti-aging serums, eye creams, foundations, facial powder, eye shadow, conditioner and hair dye. *Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief Dimethicone is a non-comdedogenic ingredient. PARABENS – A man-made chemical used for preserving ingredients. It helps prevent that expensive cosmetic from forming bacteria and fungus! It will be found in deodorants, foundations, creams, makeup and shampoo. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding parabens, however there is not enough evidence to support that parabens are all bad, but certain research has linked it to breast cancer and the function of the male reproductive system due to it mimicking the hormone estrogen. TITANIUM DIOXIDE – A natural mineral taken from oxide of titanium. It acts as a filler making the cosmetic product more opaque. It is also a coloring agent that gives products a “whitish” hue. Lastly, it acts as a preservative and sunscreen by reflecting light. It can be found in powder cosmetics, mineral makeup and sunscreen. As of late, it has been being labeled as “possible carcinogenic”, more so from the inhalation of the product and is found in mineral makeup. SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE (SLS) – A foaming/cleaning agent. Gives your products that gentle, foaming quality and is found in shampoos, cleansers and toothpastes. It can be a skin irritant leading to dry, cracked skin and making you more sensitive to other chemicals. SODIUM LAURETH SULPHATE (SLES) – Another foaming/cleaning agent found once again in shampoo, cleansers and toothpastes. Due to the concern associated with SLS, more companies are now using this ingredient, since it causes less irritation. FORMALDEHYDE – A colorless, flammable gas that is found in the environment. It prevents products from expiring! It is mainly used as a preservative. Commonly found in nail polishes, nail hardeners (note in nail hardeners formaldehyde is an active ingredient not a preservative) as well as the “Brazilian blowout” hair straighteners, shampoo and makeup. AVOID! *Fun Fact: The International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary & Handbook is published by the Cosmetic Toiletry & Fragrance Association. It provided specifics on cosmetic ingredients and can be found at your public library.

Where’s the Gold? By Steve Hathcock

Photo © 2012 Steve Hathcock

A few years back I received a letter from Jim Jennings whose father was Chief Engineer of the crew dredging the Brownsville ship channel in the early thirties. A tremendous hurricane struck the coast in 1933. Old timers tell of a 30-foot tidal surge that inundated South Padre Island. The old lighthouse at Point Isabel, now Port Isabel, was crowded with area residents who watched their homes wash away in the swirling waters. The government crew visited the Island immediately after the floods and discovered the remains of the abandoned army depot at Brazos Santiago, which was located on the southern shore of the present day jetties. Jennings’s father collected a trunk full of artifacts including bullets, army issue brogans, guns, and the remains of the old barracks. The outpost appeared to have been abandoned rather hastily and Jennings could only wonder about the calamity that had occurred so many years before. Later, during dredging operations, the Government crew located the wreck of an old ship full of wine. More importantly, the men who dove on the old wreck found a massive iron bound chest lying on the sandy bottom of the Laguna Madre. They tied a float to the trunk, planning a salvage operation for the following day. As seems to be the case in these kinds of stories, they were unable to locate the float upon their return. In closing, Jim asked, “Do you have any ideas about what could have been in that trunk?” Here is my reply in part; Dear Jim, Yes, I can tell you a little about your Dad’s amazing finds. During the Civil War, the Union Army maintained a depot at the northern tip of Brazos Island, and as your father described, it was located right about where the stone jetties stand today. Artist, Eddie Valent, portrayed the depot as it appeared in 1865. Several medium sized vessels may be seen lying in wait for

Pass at Brazos Santiago

their turn to be unloaded. In the background are the government wharves, and of course the depot itself. Farther back one can see where the hospital and barracks were located. The Brazos Beacon and other facilities were located to the south along the beach area. The original painting hung for years in the office of Bruce Aiken, curator for the Brownsville Museum. Bruce passed away several years ago, but was, without a doubt, one of our area’s foremost experts on early military history of the lower Rio Grande Valley. He recently published a collection of his short stories titled, Bullets, Ballots and Barking Dogs. It was a small press run and sold rather quickly. This military post was in use up to the time of the great Hurricane of 1867. The storm caught the army by surprise. It also completely destroyed the outpost at Clarksville, and the Mexican city of Bagdad, both of which were located astride the border at the mouth of the Rio Grande de River. Luckily, most of the soldiers and residents escaped with their lives. d The wine ship your father found was the remains of the La Reine Des Mers. The five masted d not make it schooner struggled for several days trying to outrun a storm that sprang up in the Gulf of Mexico. It did to the shelter of the bay though, and sank in sight of land in late November of 1875. The merchantman was carrying a full load of fine French wines. Stories of the time, tell how local fishermen braved the storm in order to rescue the crew of the stricken ship. In one story, the ship’s survivors remarked on the hospitality of their new found friends who gave them food and shelter until they were able to fend for themselves. Another story, by Ford Greene, part of the crew who worked with your father, describes the loss and the rediscovery of the old ship. The trunk your father found and then lost? In Texas Treasure Coast, author Tom Townsend, lists $100,000.00 in gold bullion as also going down with the ship. There has been no record of the treasure ever being recovered. Who knows? It might still be out there, buried in the silt. Perhaps the line your father tied the float to, is still waving lazily in the warm currents of the Laguna Madre. Spanish 2 real coin. Minted between 1536-72

1808 8 real Coin similar to those found on Padre Island by John Singer

All Washed Up Finding Treasure on Padre Island By Steve Hathcock John Singer, arguably our Island’s best known beach-comber and finder of great treasures, was shipwrecked on the shores of Padre Island sometime in the late 1840s. He is said to have made his living the first year by crafting shingles from a cargo of cypress logs that washed ashore during the same storm that stranded him and his family. In 1854, following a Texas cyclone, Singer and his eldest son Alexander stumbled upon the carcass of an ancient ship that had wrecked upon these shores many years before. It had only been revealed due to the action of the waves created by the cyclone. Amid the timbers, the two found a partially buried strong box containing well over 60,000 Spanish silver dollars or eight reale coins that were of the same size and weight as our American silver dollar. Singer left the Island at the onset of the Civil War but before departing, he and his sons buried a fortune including the Spanish coins and other priceless artifacts gathered from the shores of Padre. In a 1935 interview, Alexander, now in his 80s, related how he and his father had made several clandestine returns to the spot where their treasure was buried, each time removing several thousand dollars in coins. It was a couple of years after the war before the two made another trip to the Island. But they were too late. A great hurricane in1867 swept in and totally inundated the Island, washing away their landmarks in the process. The treasure is supposedly still awaiting some lucky beachcomber. But don’t for a minute think that John Singer’s is the only treasure hidden under the sands of the Padre’s Island. In the June 6, 1869 issue of the Indianola Bulletin, the editor reported: “Mr. H. Seeligson has shown us some old coins that were washed ashore on Padre Island by the motion of the sea. We learn that fully a barrel full was picked up by the people of the Island. They are much worn by the sea. About a hundred years back, an old Spanish galleon sank off of Pass Cavallo loaded with money and wax for the missions. The wax has been floating up on the beach for years and now the loose coins with a salt incrustation are washed up. They are much blackened by and resemble the old pistareen or Spanish two reale coin similar in size and value to our silver quarter. It is strange but never the less true.” The Corpus Christi Advertiser reported seeing several half and quarter dollar sized coins gathered up on the shores of Padre Island that are more than three hundred years old.” An editor of the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer wrote in an article dated 1869, “Similar coins have been picked up from time to time in the vicinity of the same spot for about two or three miles. Judge Curry, a resident of Padre, has seen some eighty dollars of similar coins picked up there at one time. All are quarters or halves.” In today’s coin market, such antiquities could command anywhere from five to ten dollars to several thousand dollars for exceptionally nice copies. Sun Burns and Mosquitos: Protect Yourself When Visiting Padre Island By Steve Hathcock Do you like to roll up your pants legs, and maybe splash your way along the edge of the surf? Ahh…..sounds romantic doesn’t it? Well, a lot of you Northerners do not realize how close to the equator you are on South Padre Island. The sun’s rays are much more powerful here than in the upper Midwest. As a result, you can get a good burn, even on an overcast day. During the summer months, I have gotten sun-burnt right though a T-shirt! We locals generally have an aloe plant or two in our yards. But, it is not always easy to find an aloe plant when you need one. So that’s why I carry a bottle of Aloe Gator’s “Green Stuff” when I am out treasure hunting. In my opinion, this is the best commercial sunburn ointment on the market. It can be found in many of our local beach shops, shell shops and probably in most of the gift shops in the major hotel lobbies. Just look for anything that has aloe in it. Better yet, be smart and buy sun block which, by coincidence, is also a mainstay of Aloe Gators products. http://www.agsbrands.com/ Strong Gulf breezes keep mosquitoes and other biting bugs off of the beach, but they can be a real problem when you get behind tall dunes where the wind doesn’t blow. The same folks who make the Green Stuff, used to distribute a product called, Bug Bite Relief. This stuff worked fast. I am like a magnate when it comes to blood sucking bugs. If there is a mosquito anywhere within several blocks of me, I am destined to be fed upon. This same product could be used for other bites, too. I stood in a nest of little red ants one time and sustained around thirty bites. I sprayed Bug Bite on my legs and rubbed it into my skin. The sting was gone in just a couple of minutes. Best of all, no blisters formed afterwards. I was disappointed when I learned Bug Bite was no longer available and I called the company to find out why. Bill Foshage, president of AGS Brands, told me that the company that manufactured Bug Bite had become a victim to the bad economy and closed its doors. In response to their customers needs, AGS is now gearing up to produce the wonder-product in its own plant near Dallas Texas. Until AGS is able to get their new line on the market I suggest the following, wet a bar of soap and lather the afflicted area. As the soap dries, it stretches the skin and like a poultice will draw the poison from the bite area. Bill also told me about some of the other products manufactured and distributed by his company that include a full line of camping and other outdoor products. One new product, just introduced a couple of months ago is the Bleuet brand of lightweight, portable cooking equipment and non-toxic solid fuel which is very lightweight but solidly built. He is sending me some samples to try out and I will post the results on my South Padre TV web site, http://southpadretv.tv/ Broken glass poses long-term problems for beachgoers. The Town of South Padre and the Cameron County Parks system both have strong anti-glass laws, which means;

“NO GLASS BOTTLES ON THE BEACH.” There is a good reason for this law. I remember skinny dipping in the Mississippi River, near Lacrosse Wisconsin one summer. As we frolicked in the water I stepped on a broken bottle. I cannot recall how many stitches were required to close the cut, ‘but I do remember having to go barefoot so the wound would heal. Near the end of the summer, the doctor removed my stitches. Did I learn my lesson? Well, let me put it this way. I now have identical scars on BOTH feet. Yep, I learned my lesson all right, just not the first time around.

See you on the beach!

Would you know what to do if you lost your job? Tips to help you prepare for an unexpected career crisis. Gerardo “J.J.” Ramirez Jr. Partner, San Antonio Central Office of’New York Life Insurance Company

We all know how important it is to be prepared for a fire, flood, or other type of emergency. What about something that seems less dramatic, but can be equally devastating, like unemployment? You can’t dial 911 or stop, drop, and roll, but you can take steps to help minimize some of the fallout from losing your job. Stay positive. It’s important to remember that the decision was probably based on the economy or other external factors. Be professional. If you handle yourself with decorum, your employer may be willing to serve as a reference, recommend you to vendors, and even provide assistance with interviewing and résumé building. Plus, as the economic situation continues to improve, who’s to say they won’t hire you back?. Account for every penny. Review your terms of employment and claim any money owed to you from bonuses, commissions—even unused vacation. Also, find out if you are entitled to a severance package. If not, file for unemployment benefits right away since it may take weeks to process. Replace lost benefits. If your spouse works, see if you can add yourself to his or her health care plan. If not, you can apply for COBRA coverage within 60 days of termination and extend your health care benefits for 18 months. Similarly, you may want to purchase an affordable term life insurance policy to help replace your workplace coverage. Evaluate your retirement plans. While some employers allow you to leave your 401(k) in place, it may not always be the right move. Have a financial expert look the plan over and see if you are better off rolling over the funds into a traditional IRA or Roth IRA.1 Network-Network-Network. You never know where your next job will come from, so take advantage of every networking opportunity. Also, be sure to use social media platforms like LinkedIn to help connect with people online and let them know you’re looking. SUITS Series Devon Suggs I was born May 10th 1993 in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up here in San Antonio I became a huge Spurs fan and that inspired me to become an athlete. I played multiple sports including soccer, football, baseball, swimming and basketball. These sports helped develop me into a leader among my peers. In addition, having parents that were entrepreneurs introduced me to personal development at a young age, which led me to believe that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Today, I’m a driven individual who is always striving to become the greatest version of myself through my mind, body and spirit. Now that I have achieved a level of awareness in regards to my own life and purpose I see that it is also possible for everyone else to do the same. Not only that, but I see this level of certainty as an absolute necessity in life. For the most part, I tend to see people settling for less because they don’t know they have the courage to achieve greatness. Each of us has an infinite potential that is deep within which can be awakened at any moment after developing this awareness. As you can see I enjoy being an inspiration for others to become the greatest versions of themselves. My mission is to create a results focused, purpose driven, massive action plan for people to achieve in all aspects of their lives, which introduces us to our Young Movement. SUITS Series Dylon Suggs My name is Dylon Suggs, born September 8th 1994 here in San Antonio. With my father, Clay Suggs, being a Chiropractor and my mother, Lorena Monroe, a model & entrepreneur I have to give them the credit for raising me as a leader in the business and wellness world later in my life. In the beginning I grew up as the leader of my peer group in sports, school, and entertainment. I was the guy who had a lot of friends, connected those friends, and hosted the social events. At least that’s who I was in high school, the fun guy. As of 3 years ago I began my journey of personal development in every avenue of life: health, business, relationships, and spiritual. I sought out multiple programs that would teach me the most up to date and excellent methods to succeed in those areas of my life that helped me lead my peers in a far more prosperous direction. After attending the University of Houston and moving on to attend the Quantum Leap program out of Los Angeles I became a leader in the business world. Along that journey I've been able to attain the most prosperous health, relationships, business, and spiritual life the world has to offer and will continue to grow in each of those areas. My conclusion after attending many empowering programs is that I believe everyone can achieve the highest level of accomplishment in every avenue of life. Not only that, but it is our duty and responsibility to achieve at the highest level for our family, friends, and God. We can have it all, you just haven't been told that yet, but now you know. My values as of today consist of health, love, relationships, achievement, enlightenment, success, business, and prosperity. In specific to business, we've partnered with a health & wellness company to provide people with all their nutritional needs in order to suppress diseases, lose weight, and support function of every part of the body in addition to offering empowering opportunity for others to create their own stream of income not to mention breakthrough trainings that have helped dozens live an overall happier more fulfilling life. By Jeremy McGilvrey

In order to successfully achieve some of the loftiest objectives that you set out for yourself and life you need to develop strong self-discipline. Without self-discipline it can be difficult to become a productive entrepreneur. Here are some top advantages that you can experience by working on your own self-discipline: 1. The greatest focus you have ever seen: A person with great self-discipline can be extremely focused on accomplishing their goals. Instead of avoiding goals and submitting to various disturbances throughout their day they’re completely disciplined in the way that they spend their time and make sure that every minute of their day is spent making a positive change. 2. Finding newfound respect: Your self-discipline can command newfound respect from friends and colleagues. You may find it difficult to maintain respect from people in the workplace but if people value your discipline and hard work it is hard for them not to respect you. 3. WOMEN in Business Lari Nelson Nelson Fashion Group/The Agency 4522 Fredericksburg Road, Ste. B-79 San Antonio, TX 78201 Upper level of Wonderland Mall

1. How did you get started in your career? My family had a business /a manufacturing company. We also had a wholesale and retail business. Also show rooms in the apparel markets throughout the USA. In a way I grew up around the business. As I got older, I worked in all aspects of our businesses. I also, was the buyer for our retail store and worked in all the showrooms in the apparel markets. I started producing all the fashion shows for our retail store, and working in all the apparel markets , I was around designers, models, hair and makeup people, sound, lighting and staging for all the shows. So, I just put all my knowledge to good use, with show production, runway training for models and eventually evolved into an agency . 2. Do you have a career plan? Not really lol! My business it not like working a normal job . I have worked in this industry for over 30+ years, I have new clients call me everyday asking for different job offerings in our industry. Each day is different. I have to fit the client with the model or talent best for the job. I try to educate anyone interested in the fashion/talent industry . 3. What three pieces of advice would you give other women in business today. To be yourself. In my business you have to be approachable for new models/talent and clients to want to work with me, as an agent. No one likes a pretentious person or a snob. 4. What is the most satisfying quality about your job. Helping young people feel good about themselves and to see my models and talent succeed in our industry. 5. What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job. Models/talent wanting instant success. It takes a lot of training, and preparation to succeed in our industry, also a bad attitude can ruin your career. Being humble and grateful will get you a lot further in our industry and I believe in life in general. I will NOT work with anyone with a difficult personality or a Diva, whether it be a model/talent or even a client, it wastes too much positive energy. 6. What would you say are the top three skills anyone should have in business. Good positive attitude. Perseverance with competitive goals. Being honest and humble. 7. In your line of business, what motivates you? When my models/talent succeed locally or in the larger markets and when I have happy clients. 8. How do you define success? In my business/industry, my success would be different than a normal job or career. Success to me is again, helping young models and talent succeed in our industry. Most of the time its not about money, it a creative business and if you like what you do, and you’re good at it, then that is success to me. 9. Who has been your greatest inspiration? Mr. Mike Beaty, the owner of the Model and Talent Expo. He was the male model that toured the world with Vogue Magazine and Twiggy. He now holds an event in Dallas that I have been the Director of for 20 years now. I get to work with 60 of the top agents in the world that he brings to the Dallas Expo twice a Year. It is an amazing event, this is where I get to place all of my models and talent in the larger markets all over the world. 10. What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career? Again just seeing my models and talent succeed in the fashion and show biz industry.

2016 FERRARI 488 By Dan Cooper dancooper09@gmail.com

Another in a long line of beautiful and powerful Ferrari models, the 488 is new this year. It comes in either GTB or Spider configuration. I would prefer the GTB, if any wealthy benefactors out there are interested. And if this little Italian beauty doesn't make your head turn and your mouth water, I don't know what would. The 488's appearance is striking, as you would expect. But its most distinguishing feature is its wide stance at the rear. If this were an animal, it would be a cheetah that had undergone a muscle building program on its hind quarters only. Is it fast? Yeah, you could say that. Forget zero to sixty times. This car brags about its 0-120 time. Which is about eight seconds. That's to 120 mph, not 60. Well, okay, if you must know, Car and Driver estimates that 0-60 is about 3.0 sec. You know. The same amount of time it takes you to go from outside the garage to inside the garage. At just south of a quarter million bucks, this is no economy car. But then, who cares? Certainly not anyone who can afford one of these sweet rides. For those still interested in such things, the EPA rates it at 15 mpg city, and 20 highway, which is actually better than I would have expected. Nor should this be confused with a family car. It is a two-seat sports car, and one of the best of them ever created. Echoing its Formula One heritage, all controls are immediately at hand, many of them on the steering wheel, itself. The bucket seats are plush and comfortable. Honestly, I cannot imagine very many good reasons for getting out of that driver's seat. This model was envisioned as a replacement for

the 458. But for whatever reason, that line is still available, too. There are some notable differences, some of them significant. The 458 was criticized for its relatively harsh ride. That has been softened without any compromise to handling capability. The interior is less Spartan, too. The engine is an all-new 3.9-liter V-8, but the big news for the power plant is the dual turbos. Turbochargers have a nasty reputation for changing the way an engine sounds. But don't worry. That beautiful Ferrari sound remains a musical delight to the ear. This is a good thing, too, because I always want it to remain true that Ferrari's pass the "duck test." If it looks like a Ferrari, and handle's like a Ferrari, and SOUNDS like a Ferrari, it probably is a Ferrari. The new engine puts out 660 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 560 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm. Both are up from the 458, and peak torque is achieved far earlier. The only available transmission is a smooth operating seven-speed dualclutch automatic. Nice features include the two-piece retractable hard top sections for the open-air Spider, and an automatically adjusting rear spoiler for variable aerodynamics depending on vehicle speed. Just sitting at the curb, this beauty is a jaw-dropper. Make mine Italian racing red, please.

A Little Design Intervention Lisa Ibarra Burlap Junkies

Who doesn’t love meeting new people and being creative? Our DIY Design with Wine workshops are geared towards awakening the “not so creative minds” We take pride in our social events and we gear each social to be unique as the previous one. What’s better than shopping and designing all in the same afternoon in the same place? Burlap Junkies brings the once forgotten but salvaged architectural designs of some beautiful Texas structures. In one of our recent workshops we took some wood trim that was sitting on some dusty shelves at Architectural Antiques Salvage Company and redesigned it into decorative wood serving trays. What was so special about this particular wood trim? Well during The Majestic Theatre renovation (1980’s-90’s) pieces of their structure were salvaged and sat inside a warehouse waiting to be re-loved. We fell in love with the story behind it and the idea of bringing some pretty amazing pieces to our classes. At the beginning of our classes each student picks out their favorite color from our Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture line. I then teach them the basic paint application and distressing/sealing techniques. Our ladies then added cast iron handles from our Rustic Brands hardware collection and finished them with their own personal initials. It’s great to see our student’s personality come through each re-designed piece. Who can say they have a little bit of San Antonio history in their home decor? This is where we come in! We repurpose and re-love what was once forgotten. Our classes continue to sell out and are popular for the simple fact unique creations and techniques. They bring people together in a creative way, allowing strangers to gain some new friendships! You do not have to be an art major to make something beautiful; we could all use a little encouraging in the design direction. Our re-designs cannot be purchased off the shelf at a local hardware store or a craft store, each piece is carefully constructed with the excitement of knowing they will have a new purpose and a new home. We often have what I call our “repeat offenders” which are students that sign up for our classes every month. We hope you can make it out to one of our social events in the hill country. You can locate our event page on facebook for current and future classes. There’s nothing wrong with a little design intervention! Much love Lisa

“GREEN CONSTRUCTION: The Hows and Whys of Building Green by Dan Cooper dancooper09@gmail.com What does it mean to go green in building construction? It means creating structures that are environmentally responsible. But what does that mean, and how do you go about doing that? It does not just mean slapping solar panels on the roof. The built environment has a far greater impact than most people realize on the natural environment, on the economy, and on human health. GREEN BUILDINGS Environmentally responsible buildings are those that are resource efficient. But that applies throughout a building's existence, not just when it is being first erected. The processes and materials employed in the initial construction are only part of the formula. Thoroughly green construction takes into account the design and siting of the structure, as well as its operation and maintenance over time. The building's later renovations and even its deconstruction at the end of its life cycle should be considerations, as well. Only when all of these factors are considered together do you have a fully sustainable or "high-performance" structure that can be called environmentally responsible. Just like people, buildings have environmental footprints. Consumption of energy and natural resources during construction and use defines part of this. But the environmental effects also include waste and its disposal, and noise, air, and water pollution. Storm water runoff is a pollution factor to consider. All of these things are part of the overall footprint of the structure. Green buildings are designed to reduce the negative impact of these factors.

HOW IT IS DONE Some of the ways that structures can be made more environmentally friendly include: • Landscaping to reduce water runoff. Incorporate the use of native plants that have adapted to the local environment, thus requiring little or no additional watering. • Utilizing solar energy by placing windows in the most advantageous locations. • Incorporating sustainable construction materials, such as those that have been recycled or made from renewable resources. • Accentuating the indoor environment's healthy atmosphere by minimizing pollutants, including noise pollution. In office buildings, for example, this has the added benefit of promoting better employee productivity. • Utilizing the most energy efficient systems for heating and air conditioning and lighting. • Employing only the most energy efficient appliances. • Supplementing or replacing dependence on fossil fuel energy by incorporating solar, wind, and other fully renewable energy sources.

Today's energy efficient appliances do make a difference. The Energy Star Program has helped to distinguish and advance energy efficiency in appliances and HVAC systems. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) have taken leading rolls in advancing green construction and providing information on green building practices. WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO THINK GREEN IN CONSTRUCTION Carbon dioxide emissions are coming into focus as a distinct problem. Commercial and residential buildings account for as much as 38 percent of all CO2 emissions in the United States. Thinking green in construction helps to protect natural ecosystems. It also promotes bio-diversity. And building green helps to increase demand for green products and services, the use of which benefits everyone while spurring economic growth. The obvious benefits include natural resource conservation, but they also enhance occupant health and comfort while reducing operating expenses. The most relevant reason to go green in construction is that it is everyone's responsibility to do our part. Construction leaves a footprint that lasts a relatively long time. It is important to make its effects as positive as we can.

FAITH,HOPE & CHARITY "Matter is the vehicle for the manifestation of Soul on this plane of existence, and Soul is the vehicle on a higher plane for the manifestation of spirit, and these three (or a trinity) are synthesized by life which pervades them all."

We’ve come a long way baby! In 2009 when Cressie Animal Refuge and Enrichment, d.b.a. CARE) founders Peggy and Lloyd Brink launched their rescue organization, our city had on average a 25% chance of a dog leaving the shelter alive. Today that number has greatly improved, with our city now boasting an accomplished “no kill” status. CARE is thrilled to have been a part of the efforts in achieving this goal. Unfortunately, CARE finds that the work to save unwanted animals is never done. On any given day, you can see stray dogs roaming our city streets and shelter lobbies overflowing with owner surrendering their pets. In our seven years in business, CARE has grown from rescuing a little over 100 dogs per year to nearly 600. CARE’s staff is rather small and relies heavily on volunteers and supporters for the hard work and monetary support needed to carry out our mission. CARE’s operational model is rather unique given over 99 percent of rescue dogs we go straight to adoptive homes. How CARE can create such a successful rescue environment is simple. If we do not have an immediate adoptive family, the rescue animal is given the medical attention it may need and placed in a foster home until a loving and permanent family can be found. We are willing to take in all breeds and sizes of dogs. Our staff works diligently to place each dog into a home whose befitting of the dogs personality, temperament, and energy level. For those of us at CARE, it’s not just about the dogs but also finding the next member of our unique and dedicated family. Becoming a CARE volunteer and or supporter makes you a part of that family. To learn more about CARE joining our efforts, please visit our Website at www.caretx.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/caretx.

Faith, Hope and Charity of the Month Center

Heidi Search Center was established in August, 1990, following the abduction of 11-year-old Heidi Lynn Seeman. She disappeared from her NE San Antonio neighborhood on August 4, while walking home from a friend’s house. While the search for Heidi was expanding, 7-year-old Erica Marie Botello also went missing from her Southwest San Antonio home. Within weeks, the bodies of both girls were discovered. Heidi’s body was found in a rural area in Wimberly, Texas, Daniel Moore,Dottie Laster and the statue of Heidi Lynn Seeman. 60 miles from San Antonio. Erica’s body was found in a storm drain less than a mile from her home. Both had been murdered. In all, more than 8,000 volunteers searched for 21 days, covering 1,200 miles. Due to the outpouring of volunteers and support, it was determined that a center was needed to advocate for families of missing children and adults, educate communities and assist in law enforcement sanctioned searches. Heidi Search Center has since assisted families of more than 4,000 missing persons, providing emotional support, referrals, education and targeted assistance during searches. We actively work with civic leaders, communities and individuals to form partnerships that lead to raising awareness and ensuring safer communities. As of Sept 2015 the Heidi Search Center is at the verge of having to close down due to not having funding or any other Grants to help keep it sustained Dottie Laster reached out to Daniel Moore and Julie Martinez asking for our help with her knowing that my wife and I would see to it that we would insure that the Heidi Search Center would never have to close down the doors. Get Community Connected events has made it there number one priority to get creative and host community fashion shows throughout san antonio and have all fashion designers donate there fashion line of clothing to auction them off as a way to keep the Heidi Search Center doors from closing. Daniel Moore and Julie Martinez with Get Community Connected Events has even started a campaign searching for 200 business owners to donate $20.00 a month for 12 months as a way to keeping the doors open my wife and I see first hand how important it is to insure the funds are raised as we encourge Dottie Laster to stay focused on locating the missing children and adults as my wife (Julie Martinez ) and I (Daniel Moore) strive each and every day to seeing that we keep bringing in the funds. We do reach out to all business owners and Community leaders and to the public for assistance they can always call us at any time of the day weather it is to notify us of another missing child or even as a way to state they are willing to help us with a donation they can call us at 210-900-5666...24/7....my wife and I always state to Dottie we will never stop searching for the funds to come in as long as we have missing children and your out there looking for them..it takes a team to keep things going. As of today the Heidi Search Center has a 95% recovery rate on locating missing children and adults throughout the United States. Julie Martinez & Daniel Moore

SEXUAL AWARENESS MONTH I let drinking consume me. I allowed it to take over my life. It blinded my vision. It took away my clarity to make sound and just decisions. It impaired my judgment. I allowed alcohol to scar me for life. An evening of dinner and drinks became a night of dancing on tables and a horrific drunken escapade that will be with me for the rest of my life. Some say survivor. I’m just getting by, but I know prevention is possible and could have been very possible had I made some key decisions early on in the night. I went home with a boy some years and years ago after drinking heavily. I wanted to drink him under the table. Ha! I was a buck twenty and he was almost double that. Mistake one. The night went cruelly downhill afterwards. I don’t remember much but I do remember being a crumpled up half-clothed pile of mess laid out in the far dark corner of my room. Why did I let myself get to the point where I was no longer in control of…anything? Alcohol has been noted to cause many problems when we look at sexual assault among young students and campus life. I was neither and it caused me a world of pain. Overconsumption of alcohol is not always the culprit in every sexual assault case. But, prevention is and can be possible. Awareness is key in eradicating sexual assault. Remember that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and remember that #PreventionIsPossible when everyone works toward the safety of each person.

How To Survive a Police Encounter

Given the frequency with which we hear of encounters with the police that result in claims of excessive force when this contact quickly escalates and turns violent, it is important to follow a few steps in surviving such an experience while maintaining your constitutional rights. First, it is important to know that, with few exceptions, law enforcement has the right and ability to conduct brief detentions where they believe a crime has occurred. Police contact with the public most often occurs during a routine traffic stop. If the police stop a vehicle because of a traffic infraction, that officer has a right to conduct a brief detention of that vehicle and it’s occupants. If during that detention, an officer sees or smells what he believes to be evidence of a crime, it may lead him to legally conduct a search of that vehicle or its occupants. The legal authority to conduct such a search is called “probable cause”. Examples of this are where an officer sees the presence of contraband in plain view before conducting a search or where he smells what he believes based on his training and experience to be the presence of drugs. Absent probable cause, an officer may not have the right to search a vehicle or any of its occupants merely believes he suspects or has a “hunch” that something illegal is contained within it. It is most often during this stage of the initial stop that the officer may request consent to search the vehicle if he believes he may not have the right to search. Citizens in this situation have the right to politely, but firmly, refuse to give consent. The officer may believe

he has the right to search anyway and may proceed without consent. In those cases, whether the officer had the right to search can be litigated post-arrest. It is not in the best interest of the citizen to engage the officer in an argument about his right to search-those discussions are best left for the lawyers in court. Likewise, a citizen should not feel compelled to submit to a search merely because the officer states that the drug dogs will be called; the vehicle will be damaged during the search if consent is not given or he claims ‘I’m going to search anyway, so you might as well just consent” A citizen has every right to expect an officer perform his duties within the purview of the law and should not succumb to circumventing the law just to make his job easier. Notwithstanding this assertion of one’s right, it serves no purpose in aggressively arguing, physically fighting or resisting an arrest or detention merely because the citizen believes he is in the right in this instance. It is well settled law in Texas, as in most states, that a citizen does not have the right to resist arrest or detention or evade the police even where the initial stop or search and seizure was without probable cause. Hopefully, these tips will aid the reader in avoiding a violent conflict in the event of a future stop by the police.

Vote San Antonio is an urgency-based initiative launched on Super Tuesday 2016, by locals, Mayra Mendoza and Máximo Anguiano. The approach of urgency is due in part to the magnitude of what is at stake in this year’s presidential election and the massive gap among registered voters who and actual voter turnout. Vote San Antonio is absolutely committed to registering all citizens of our great Alamo City, but our passion and aspiration lies in inspiring lifelong voters, especially among millennials and people of color. Mayra and Máximo have both dedicated their young lives to separate but similar activism. “Action is critical to raise awareness and bring about social change but that myriad of advocacy, must be sealed by showing up to the polls in order to effect the change,” says Mayra. Vote San Antonio seeks to increase and sustain civic engagement well beyond Election Day(s) through year-round, innovative mobilizations. "I think it's increasingly important that we engage our communities to levels beyond what pop culture and mainstream media allow.

Mayra Mendoza

An aspect of the engagement sought, is undoubtedly political. We also understand that representation is important. We need more individuals that look, sound and can relate to the San Antonio citizenry, to be elected to office. Neither voter turnout, nor equal representation is possible without sustaining civic, and ultimately political engagement among members of our underserved communities. Our unique and innovative platforms can do this. Be on the lookout!” says Máximo. Vote San Antonio’s engagement efforts will range from artistic, informational, culturally-sensitive, educational, and various other awarenessprovoking mediums that connect individuals while also conceptualizing an otherwise important but dull subject matter. Specifically, a series of pop-up events in San Antonio communities, venues, and affairs otherwise unreached, will be facilitated by Vote San Antonio. Such opportunities will seek to embody a welcoming space where the already Máximo Anguiano civically engaged and the total novice, may celebrate, collaborate and empower each other, their advocacy efforts, their electoral engagement and the city of San Antonio as a whole. Millennials: The Real Sleeping Giants By: Desiree H. Serna, B.A., C.N.P., M.P.A. & Daniel E. Serna

America has yet to acknowledge the real political “sleeping giants” of our contemporary society…the Millennials. Many contend that Latinos have the power to pick and elect the next president. And while we see demographic trends showing the Latino population is in fact growing, Census reports the Latino population at 55.4 million as of July 2014. This pales in comparison to the Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now at 83.1 million and represent more than one quarter of the nation’s population—surpassing the once largest demographic Baby Boomers capped at 75.4 million. Now here’s a reality check…in a matter of less than two years all Millennials will be of voting age, making them the largest voting population in America. This segment, quite literally, has the ability to elect the next president into office; shift once red states to blue; and possibly lead to a much more liberal political agenda. Interestingly, Millennials are the most racially diverse generation in American history. This trend is driven by the large wave of Hispanic and Asian immigrants who have been coming to the U.S. for the past half century. The racial makeup of today’s Millennials purported to be one of the key factors which may explain their political liberalism. According to Pew Research Center, Millennials tend to vote more Democratic in nature, as well. Pew Research Center further contends, that Hispanic millennials account for nearly half (44%) of the record 27.3 million Hispanic eligible voters projected for 2016—a share greater than any other racial or ethnic group of voters. The political implications are gigantic. These “sleeping giants” could quite literally change the political landscape of future America.
