Better than Botox? By Dr. Robert Lemke

Most people know that Botox® is the name of that little drug that seems to magically remove wrinkles. What people don’t know is that there is an alternative to Botox® that is MUCH less expensive and possibly better! Back in the 1950’s botulism toxin had been used by neurologists to reduce or remove muscle spasms in patients. This medicine would relax the muscles temporarily. An opthamologist (eye doctor) actually began using it to help eye spasms and eventually other doctors used it to correct neck spasms where a persons’ head was tilted over because of tight muscles. In 2002 the FDA approved Botox® for the reduction of brow frown lines. Eventually the medicine was used for many other things. These include helping to control excessive underarm sweating, and to decrease muscle stiffness in elbows, wrist and fingers with arm spasms. Just recently, in 2010 it was approved for the prevention of headaches in adults with chronic migraines.

For many years, Botox® was the only medicine available for these conditions, but times are changing. Advances in technology have produced a few products over the years that compete with Botox®. Enter into the arena of cosmetic wrinkle removing medications two alternatives: Dysport and the latest Xeomin® Dysport hit the market in 2009 and uses the same active ingredients as Botox®. Dysport, however, tends to travel faster and farther in the skin and therefore it may begin a lot faster than the five to seven days that is needed for Botox®. Xeomin® is the newest drug out that can reduce or remove frown lines between the eyebrows and it has a lot of differences to the prior medications. For the doctor, the first advantage is the ease of storage. Botox® must be shipped in dry ice to preserve it. This is not easy in cases where shipping is delayed the dry ice may dry out. Xeomin® does not have to be shipped cold. This makes transferring and storing of the medicine easier and more likely to preserve it’s efficacy.

All muscle relaxants act similarly to stop muscles from contracting (making those frown lines). Xeomin®, however, is designed differently than Botox®. Xeomin® is considered a cleaner molecule with fewer chances of long term immunological reactions, or chance of developing an allergy. Doctors have been using Xeomin® since 2011 when it was FDA cleared although it has actually been used in 19 European countries since 2005. Because Xeomin® does not spend as much money on marketing, they are able to decrease the cost of their product to the doctor. Depending on the doctor’s preferences, these cost savings may be passed on to their patients. Most people don’t know about this new kid on the block, Xeomin®. Did you know that there is a simple over the counter medication that you can take to possibly increase the effect of your wrinkle removing medication? Find out in our next issue what you can do to have even better results from your muscle/wrinkle relaxing medication.

SAN ANTONIO MOTORCARS: Vehicles that Move Our Lives By Dan Cooper This section in SA Monthly ONLINE! will be about the vehicles that change our lives. The ones that warm our blood when we think about them. The ones that make our hearts beat just a little more quickly. The ones we desire. We will look at the cars, trucks, and motorcycles of today. And we will look at those from the past that have influenced us. We may even look briefly at the cars of the future, the auto show exercises and experimental technologies that push the envelope of modern design. The name of this section is SA Driven, and the definitions posted above for the word, “driven,” display a subtly overlapping dual nature to the word. To be driven is to be carried or transported physically, but our cars transport us in another way as well. To be driven is also to be unmistakably and irresistibly urged to action. Our cars do this to us and – make no mistake about it – we like it! Even when some cars are just parked in a driveway, we like what they do to us. They seem to be in our blood. In a very real sense we are compelled, driven by our cars. New cars are interesting for several reasons. They are the latest designs in a culture that craves the new and different. They are the latest developments in technology in a world where technological advance is at a fever pitch. And they are the latest versions in a line of successful creations to which we attach our loyalties and fond memories. Our expectations compel us to like them. The newest cars bring out our inquisitive nature and our irrepressible devotion to the mode of travel that has become synonymous with the American lifestyle. In a sprawling city like San Antonio, it is difficult to imagine our lives without our cars. We need them, but some of them force us to love them, too. And the latest offerings from automakers always seem to rekindle our fires of curiosity and attraction. Our automotive brand loyalties today echo those of generations past--generations of both people and automobiles. And some of those old vehicles are still around today. Today’s collector cars carry the pride of an earlier era. Some of these cars we remember driving and some we yearned for but never owned. Some came before our time and we recall the fanciful descriptions of by older relatives and friends. The excitement of these collectibles is reborn for all of us who take that magic step back in time. The Industrial Revolution is now a distant memory, but our cars remain the mechanical movers and shakers of our society. SA Driven will explore the excitement that is now, as it always has been, generated by these cars, the icons and trendsetters of the automotive world. Whatever else our cars are, they are also fun to look at. So we will bring you the images to help you take that virtual step to the present, the past, or the future. We will take a look at the newest and the best models from San Antonio dealerships, as well as a few examples of the crème de la crème from past eras, and a hint of things to come in an era of increasingly "Green" technology. If you love cars, we have what you are looking for. SA Monthly ONLINE! brings you this look at the vehicles that define our lives.

Eco-Automobile of the Month

THE ELEGANT 2014 CADILLAC ELR The Cadillac ELR is an attractive sight to behold for several reasons. Yes, it is stylishly elegant. And yes, it exhibits touches that hark back to the glorious trends of the 1950s and 60s, when Cadillac was the supreme example of the tailfin styling exercise. But the real reason you may want to take a good look at this car, is because it makes sense from so many angles. The Greening of the auto industry is now in full swing. Electric and hybrid vehicles are no longer the anticipated wave of the future. They are here now, and making some significant waves. This trend is capable of not only saving you money on your transportation costs; it can also make a sizable statement about your commitment to reducing your own personal carbon footprint. Driving a hybrid like the ELR makes a statement about your eco-friendliness, your recognition for the importance of sustainability. But this car offers something even more. With the ELR you get unqualified luxury and comfort from the brushed metal, the hand-stitched leather, and the intriguingly luxurious headliner of a micro-fiber material. The feeling of quality is unmistakable. The design of the tail light angling back over the top gives a hint of the old tail fin motif. The nose is chiseled and swooping down even more attractively than it was on the show car this vehicle was based on. Yes, this car is even prettier than the show-car version. And those still aren't all of the reasons for taking a look at this Cadillac right now. Hybrid vehicles are blessed by the government with tax credits to encourage you to own one. Yes, you will get not only reduced operating costs from the now-proven and updated GM hybrid propulsion system, but a tax credit at the end of the year, as well--perhaps several thousand dollars worth. But if you think that is all, you would still be mistaken. General Motors is now offering up to $3,000 off the price on a special promotional deal. And to sweeten it even further, they are offering the dealers a cash bonus for providing you with a test ride. That's right. The dealer is going to be "enticed" to get you behind the wheel for a test drive of the new Cadillac ELR. And while you are at it, don't forget to ask about a deal on the 240-volt level-2 home charging station. You might get a very pleasant surprise. Is this a "Duh" moment? Are you going to take a drive in one of the industry's most elegant and luxurious hybrids, and take that step into ecological sustainability? We thought you might. www.cavendercadillac.com/

ECO-FRIENDLY MOTORCYCLES! By Dan Cooper We'll bet you thought motorcycles were all eco-friendly because they use less gas, less room on the road, and less parking space, right? Nope. Since cars have gotten so much more efficient, motorcycles are not as eco-friendly as many cars. But there is a new trend to remake the image of the motorcycle as a "green machine." Motorcycles don't have the extra space for catalytic converters, and thus can't match the exhaust emission standards of the greenest cars. And the biggest bikes can't even match their gas mileage. So motorcycle manufacturers are "greening" their product with lighterweight materials in construction, streamlining the manufacturing process, and improving engine efficiency. Honda has introduced 25- and 40-percent improved fuel efficiency on two of its models. BMW improved its manufacturing process and switched to water-based paints. But the most striking development in the advance of environmental friendliness for motorcycles is the growth of the electric motorcycle market. Most people think that the lack of any exhaust emissions makes electric vehicles environmentally far superior. Unfortunately, when you plug your electric vehicle into the wall, that energy has to come from somewhere. Many areas are serviced mostly (or entirely) by coal-fired plants, so the electric vehicle in those places actually can have a larger carbon footprint than a gas-powered alternative. Luckily, only one third of San Antonio's electric power is derived from coal, so here the electric vehicle really is as green as it is supposed to be. One of the more prominent electric bike manufacturers is Zero. With models in a variety of sizes, and ranges up to 170 miles on a single charge, the greening of motorcycles has arrived. Enjoy the ride!

FOOD REVIEW A Mexican Hideaway- Relaxing at Paloma Blanca

SAMonthly FOOD Critic The restaurant's dĂŠcor, as expected, carries a Latin flavor of the brightest variety--a light and very comfortable upscale setting, the menu selections include all of the usual standard fare with quite reasonable prices, and the two visits I made were greeted with good service. Some special differences that highlight the Paloma Blanca menu include their chips and salsa. I usually prefer thin chips, and my wife likes the thick ones. Paloma Blanca has the thick variety. They also serve two salsas with the chips. One is based on pureed fresh tomatoes -- very mild. The other is a roasted pepper and garlic concoction that is very good. I started with the Tortilla Soup. Good broth, with a clear shot of cilantro, plenty of tortilla strips, a little avocado, and a good measure of cheese. The Chile Rellenos were my choice on the first visit. They served me one of the largest I have ever seen. They are battered, well filled with meat and spices, and with an unusual sauce. It was a little more 'herby' than most, but change is good, especially when it tastes that good. The plate came with rice and a bowl of pinto beans. The beans were good, but a little heavy on the juice and a little light on the beans. On my second visit they were better. The rice was seasoned and cooked well. On the first visit it was maybe a little heavy on the salt, but it was great the next time. My companion had Enchiladas de Carne and thought that they were very good, again a hearty-sized helping. The ubiquitous flour tortillas weren't there. We had a soft corn tortilla that seemed a little undercooked to me, but another companion liked it and the slight sweetness it carried. On the second visit we were served both flour and corn tortillas, and the flour tortillas were more to my liking. They went well with the Puntas de Puerco. This is pork tips simmered in a rich and spicy pepper sauce. Not too hot, but warming. The Pollo al Cilantro was tender and juicy with a distinctive, but not excessive, cilantro seasoning. Reasonable prices, good variety, and a sense of security from the noisy, hustle and bustle outside: a great lunch break.

DINING DOWNTOWN. . .

Open early every day for breakfast and lunch, with Sat. and Sun. brunch • Open till 9:00 p.m. M-St (Midnight on "First Fridays").

MadHatters Tea House & Café • 320 Beauregard, 78204 • 210-212-4832 www.madhatterstea.com SAMonthly FOOD Critic I found myself downtown on a Tuesday evening. I could have headed up 281 for the homestead, but there was no reason to rush and I was hungry. I decided to cruise into SouthTown and see what enticed. When I saw the sign for MadHatters, I remembered that they had moved downtown and it was time I checked out their new digs. The outside view is very casual, and that carries on to the interior. The décor is very busy, like a certain bunny in a story; it seems to be hurrying in many directions at once. But it’s cute, and what would you expect from a place called MadHatters? More important than the visual impression is the ‘feel’ of MadHatters. Very quickly you sense that you are in a popular "locals' hangout." You would be right about that. From the way the staff members call to customers and to each other from across the room, to the little signs asking for charitable donations to local causes, you get an impression of the old general store with people having a cup of coffee (or tea, from their extensive selection) and swapping their views on life. Everyone was courteous and informative. They let me know where the menus and specials lists were. I placed my order and asked, as I gazed at rows of bottles, if they had wines by the glass. They showed me where that list was, and I was impressed with two pages of fine selections, reds & whites, as well as beers. Wines are $7 by the glass or $25 for the bottle. The problem started after I took my wine and sat down. The wine was very good and the table was clean and almost everything was fine. But then, there it was: The pastry counter. The waiter/counter person called to tell me my Grilled Lamb K-bobs over field greens with kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumber, oregano, pickled onion, and tea vinaigrette was ready. So I picked it up and returned to my table. My attention went to the pretty presentation on the salad and the large amount of lamb on three skewers. (Two would have been enough!) This was one of four specials they were running that day, and it was completely satisfying. But that disturbingly enticing pastry counter was still right in front of me, complete in its cheerful, clean, internally-lighted presence. I really don’t do much dessert. I have enough trouble controlling my girth without topping off meals with a sugar rush. Still…I got an eyeful of awardwinning delectibles from local bakeries like Le Cake, and Janie's Pie Factory. There were so many pretty cakes with enticing names, and pastries and scones with butter and fruit in them, and brownies and … but I don’t really do desserts, you see. So I paid for my dinner, instead. Normally, you pay when you order. But I didn’t know that, and they must have figured that I was clueless and safe. Anyway, I left in a much more relaxed and satisfied state than when I came in. Okay, yes, I admit I purchased a scone, but I gave it to my wife. Honest! I would suggest that you put MadHatters Teahouse and Café on your list of places to visit soon. It has an impressive menu that includes a variety of “Cheap-O Lunch” offerings, as well as invitingly "mad" sandwiches such as Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Pickled Onion. For vegans and other "Green-conscious" clients, they have a variety of vegetarian menu options. And you can substitute grilled tofu for any meat item in their large salads. If you haven’t been to MadHatters recently, then you are definitely late, "for a very important date."

DINING DOWNTOWN. . .

More than many other dining establishments in San Antonio, The Palm Restaurant offers its clientele a richly varied experience and our equally rich and diverse menu. Whether you are celebrating that new promotion or a recent scholastic graduation, the quick and casual lunch or a “to-the-nines” fine dining experience, our place is your place. The Palm is many things to many people. What has become clearly evident since we opened here in San Antonio, and perhaps the thing I cherish most about our restaurant, is the wonderful camaraderie we share with our customers. Many dine with us because they feel as if we are an extension of their home, their families, and their friends. In fact, I have no doubt that it is I who has benefited the most from the experiences and relationships developed over the years. In an industry that must deliver each and every time on promises of quality food and personalized yet personable levels of service, these relationships remain the things I value most. The truth is, yes, we serve prime-aged steaks selected from our own meat company, and we fly in lobsters, sometimes as large as fourteen pounds, three times a week from the icy waters of Nova Scotia. Got a party of twelve people with twelve varied tastes? From the freshest seafood to pasta, chicken, and veal dishes served in portions that actually hamper our dessert sales, one could easily eat every day for a month without getting the same dish twice. Are you "Green-conscious" or Vegetarian? We’ve got something for you. Price sensitive? We have our popular 3-course power lunch consisting of a starter, entrée with individual side order, and dessert for under $26. And by the way, we are definitely proud of that reputation for having the best steaks in San Antonio. True, these are some of the things that get people in our door. But to me, The Palm is much more than a well-known chain restaurant with the best food in town. Ask our clientele and I’m sure they will agree that we are a gathering of friends and families, with some entertainment thrown in, as well as the best food and service in Texas. We offer more than just a simple dining experience. The Palm is a show, and everybody that dines with us is a movie star in their own right--part of the show, you might say. The Palm restaurant is our stage where, on a daily basis, we are expected to perform beyond expectations. Because I cannot sing and my unfortunate dancing abilities are more likely to resemble convulsions, this stage--The Palm--is the closest I will ever get to Hollywood. Every night we open “our home” and throw a party for two hundred of our favorite guests, many of whom we know on a first name basis, many of whom have also entertained me at their own homes, sporting events, or special occasions. With the demands of the restaurant industry’s long, sometimes bizarre hours, it goes without saying that we cater to those who work normal jobs with normal hours. We are your hosts on weekends, holidays, and special occasions. Thus we are firm believers in immersing ourselves in the company of those we enjoy being around: our friends and neighbors. Employees and customers alike--they are the reasons we come to work everyday, knowing we will experience something we didn’t the day before, fully aware that we have the ability to change a person’s day, cognizant that we will meet someone new who will become a dear friend. And not just a friend to the restaurant, but a friend to me, personally. When our alarm clock’s ring, we look at it as a new day, offering another opportunity to introduce people to what we consider the greatest show in San Antonio. The curtain is going up. Won't you join us? www.thepalm.com

Chef of the Month SAMonthly Food

Chef Sam Boisjoly, Executive Sous Chef Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade Born in Santiago, Chile, and raised in his family’s restaurant, the Omni Colonnade’s Executive Sous Chef Sam Boisjoly finds great pleasure in tapping into his Latin roots whenever possible. So when he joined the culinary team at the Omni Colonnade, he was given carte blanche to reinvent the dinner menu however he wished. Using authentic ingredients and flavorful creations he created what he and General Manager Delfin Ortiz have dubbed “Latin American Soul Food.” “It has been my dream to create the flavors of Latin America in a soulful way,” says Boisjoly. “By infusing my experiences with Texas cuisine as well, we have created a dining experience that wows the senses with unique flavor combinations that are truly our own.” Dishes include appetizers such as Hill Country Chili made with slow braised beef shoulder, Brasos Valley redneck cheddar and served with jalapeno cornbread; and Shrimp Campechano made with pickled gulf shrimp, cucumber, avocado, guajillo, and lime marinade; made in house soups and salads; a selection of Prime beef steaks, chicken fried steak, and whole fried snapper; Beef, chicken, shrimp or market vegetable fajitas; and desserts including fan favorites: Roasted peach and Texas pecan cobbler and Membrillo con Panela made with guava jelly, panela cheese, bunelos, and herradura caramel sauce. Green Day, International SuperHits! Rating: 4.5 of 5 Green thumbs Up! Green Day's "hits" collection was released at about the mid-point of their career so far (in '01), and it does not include songs from later albums -- their smash success American Idiot, the 2012 Uno! Dos! Tres! trilogy, etc. However, it DOES contain 21 hot punk-pop tunes that wil rattle your brain and get your toes tappin'. Beginning with a couple of excellent songs that were newly recorded at the time, the SuperHits! collection then moves chronologically through tunes such as "Basket Case," "Jaded," and the closest thing they had to a hit, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)." The latter song was uncharacteristically "soft" (musically) for the band, but it still packed a lyrical punch. The past few months have been somewhat busy for the band, coming out with Cuatro! (a DVD companion to the trilogy), their Record Store Day exclusive collection on vinyl called Demolicious, plus a new documentary about the experience of taking Idiot to the stage (Broadway Idiot).

R.E.M., Green Rating: 3 out of 5 Green Thumbs Up! 2013 was the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.'s sixth album, Green. The occasion was celebrated with a deluxe edition that included a concert recording from the "Green Tour." Time has not been especially kind to the original Green songs, however. A move in a "poppier" direction, the album featured the now-annoying hit "Stand," some better tunes such as "Pop Song 89," but was fairly inconsistent overall.

Brian Eno, Another Green World Rating: 5 of 5 Green thumbs Up! The name Brian Eno might not be all that familiar to music fans, but he has certainly been influential. He was a founding member of Roxy Music, is often considered the father of the "Ambient" subgenre of electronic music, and has been a producer on several major albums by the likes of U2 and Coldplay. Eno has also had a modestly successful solo career; more or less alternating between instrumental themes and "art pop" (rock) songs. His 1975 album, Another Green World, contains both kinds of tunes. It's an album I've come to appreciate ever more in the nearly four decades since it came out. The songs have interesting arrangement of synths, guitars, percussion, and (when present) vocals. Among the highlights are the quirkily romantic, "I'll Come Running," a spacey instrumental called "Spirits Drifting" (to me, its music for ghosts skating slowly in an abandoned skating rink), and the burbling "Golden Hours."By the way, hearing this album prompted American musician Alec West to start his own synth-pop project called Another Green World in 2007 (pretty good stuff).

The "GREENING" of the Mortgage Lending Industry By Dan Cooper As American consumers increasingly go green with our preferences, the Mortgage lending industry may be next in line to accelerate the trend further into our home-buying experience. And it would not only encourage energy efficiency in properties, it would also increase theaffordability of properties for buyers. If passed, this legislation currently stalled in Congress would significantly change property valuation to include energy efficiency in appraisal values. The SAVE Act (Sensible Accounting to Value Energy) would offer a means for underwriters and appraisers to include a greater energy-savings awareness into mortgage values. The most beneficial effect this would give homebuyers is to improve home affordability for average-income homebuyers by increasing loan amounts for which they would qualify. Through the use of qualified home energy reports, the SAVE Act would ensure that energy cost savings for a property would be included in the debt-to-income ratio formula. The net effect would be four-fold: 1. Increase property valuations for green attributes. 2. Improve borrowers' debt-to-income ratio. 3. Allow buyers to qualify for larger mortgages. 4. Encourage greater energy efficiency in home building and remodeling. Buyers as well as sellers and real estate professionals would benefit from the increased valuations, giving a boost to the housing market as a whole. Going green is a good thing for everyone involved in the real estate market.

BEAUTY, WOMEN and ART

Fig. 3

By Mark E. Baranowski In the beginning of humankind, our ancestors were simple beings. But, just as our bodies evolved over millennia in order to adapt and survive, so did our psyches. The reasons why it is important for women to strive to look beautiful and for men to want to be strong and handsome are deeply ingrained in our minds and are the product of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. Men and women of all cultures have exhausted themselves to great lengths to change their natural appearance in order to appear beautiful. People have always persisted in changing every part of their body, not only to make themselves feel more attractive, but also to get attention, arouse envy, conform to the prevailing cultural group, or show off their social status. The human desire for beautification thus seems so universal that it appears to be an inborn trait. Women however, seem to be more in focus with this idea of change. Throughout cultures worldwide, a woman's appearance seems more important to men then a man's is to women. While a man's looks might be important to women, when it comes to long-term partners, women are more interested in a man's access to economic resources, or prowess in hunting or fighting in less developed societies. There is no culture in which women actively seek to be unattractive to men. A reason for this distinction might be biological. This phenomena, which is named the “Coolidge Effect and is attributed the late 30th U.S. President, Calvin Coolidge, states that males of most species are generally more sexually excited by sexual novelty than females, the biological purpose of beauty is to attract for purposes of sex. The biological purpose of sex is reproduction. Thus, beauty in women evolved in order to attract and hold the interest of men. What is beautiful varies in culture and time, but there is something within the female psyche which makes women want to be beautiful and attractive to men. Art, to begin, is about power, plain and simple. It is about who owns the tools, who makes the rules, who gets to shape the image of the world. In high art, men were traditionally the image shapers, although there were exceptions even back in the Medieval Ages. Until modern times, women were the favorite subjects of portraits, sculptures and wall murals. They were the subjects of artists in all genres because they represent beauty, strength, madness, seduction and sex. Even from the earliest days of pre-history, they were one of the first images depicted on cave walls and in crude sculptures. In fact, one of the oldest art objects ever Fig. 1 found is the Venus of Willendorf, c. 24,000-22,000 BCE (Fig. 1). Numerous examples of this type of female figure, all generally exhibiting the same characteristics, large stomachs and breasts, featureless faces, and missing feet, have been found over a broad geographical area ranging from Western France to Western Russia. This suggests that a system of shared perception of a particular type of woman existed during the Paleolithic. Others have argued that these female figures

denote an existence of a prominent female deity identified as the Earth Mother or the Mother Goddess. On the basis of this assumption, it has been suggested that women played a more important, maybe dominant, role in Paleolithic society that possibly a matriarchy existed and women ruled. Though noticeably different in appearance to the Venus of Willendorf, but identified similarly as a fertility figure, the Snake Goddess from Knossos, Crete, c. 1600 BCE (Fig. 2), denotes a key change in the shared perception of women and epitomizes the aspects of Minoan religion, art, and Fig. 2 society. The figure of the woman herself on the Snake Goddess is unimportant; it is what she represents that is significant. Although women benefited from a land kept fertile, the fertility deity was there to serve first the needs of men. Consequently, it has generally been assumed that the "Snake Goddess" existed primarily in a male context. During the ancient Greek and Roman Eras, the image of women changed significantly to similarly denote a different role in culture. During this period, the human body was idealized in ultra life-like reproductions. Aphrodite was a very old goddess imported from other lands, surrounded by the active Greek gods she was forced into a diminished role. However, in art Aphrodite was often depicted in her older and more respectable form. See Venus de Milo, c. 150-100 BC (Fig. 3). Her body is perfect, as goddesses should be. The gentle curves of her body appear as in reality. The drapery at her hips falls gently around her. At this time, Aphrodite was given what was considered ideal, beautiful form. During most of the Middle Ages (c. 500-1400 A.D.) women were divided into two classes, peasants and nobility. Land ownership was a great source of power during the Middle Ages. Unmarried adolescent women and widows and in some cases women from the knight and noble classes had particular privileges that only men had. But, married women encountered a loss of power when they tied the knot. The wife gave her land to her husband, thus reducing her power and increasing his. A woman's dowry consisted of a land tract and her land was merged with her husbands. Charitable deeds were also part

of the religious duties to be performed Fig. 4 by the prosperous female dwellers as well as by ladies of the nobility. During this time, hierarchical representation of the human figure became more that realistic appearance. Thus, pictorial art became highly stylized. This translated into highly stylized representations that focused on the themes of nobility, duties and responsibilities. See Miniature by the Master SH of 1485, Good Deeds, c. 1500 (Fig. 4). Realism in the human form returned with the rediscovery of the ancient techniques and works of ancient Rome beginning the Renaissance and continuing until about the 19th century. The female form again took on that robust realistic form once the favorite of generations previous. Botticelli’s Venus, 15th century (Fig. 5) is a representation of the perfect ideal for this form. The female in the painting is sensuous, passive and intended primarily for the male gaze. Botticelli's Venus is so beautiful that we do not notice the unnatural length of her neck, the steep fall of her shoulders and the odd way her left arm is hinged to the body. Or, rather, we should say that these liberties, which Botticelli took with nature in order to achieve a graceful outline, add to the beauty and harmony of the design because they enhance the impression of an infinitely tender and delicate being, wafted to our shores as a gift from Heaven. During the past two centuries, art took an unprecedented journey away from realism and contrasted greatly with the ideas of idealism and honor. One such 20th century artist, Williem De Kooning (1904-1997), with his work Woman, 1954 (Fig. 6), emphasized certain aspects of the female body and put energy and roughness, as well as bold colors and brushwork. This painting shows how barely visible indications of form can still describe the beauty of the human body; in this case the female form. De Kooning is considered an Abstract Expressionist painter. Abstract Expressionism defies definition and leans toward expression of form through the

technique of application, whether with bold brushstrokes or dribbles from fingertips. Abstract Expressionism displays feelings, ideas, and experiences and is characterized by the use of bold brushstrokes, dark tones, colors, distorted proportions, features of the human body and arbitrary use of color. This energetic brushwork shows feelings and power put onto the canvas in De Kooning's own way of idealizing women. The public first thought that he was a woman-hater, because he seemed to be tearing up the woman figure and portraying them as beasts. In actuality, he idealized them, just not in the accepted way of emphasizing perfection. Within the past few decades the idea of beauty has again changed and now become a very valuable commodity. The millions of images of beauty in the media are not of the average man or woman. Few ordinary people can aspire to appear similar to these exceptional images. The models and actors are meticulously selected from the thousands who apply. They are statistically exceptional. Then, professional stylists and make-up artists spend hours doing their hair and make-up. They also spend countless hours in the gym and are worked exhaustively by professional trainers. However, in films, soaps, and sitcoms these exceptional people are placed in ordinary situations, making the average person thus feel inadequate by comparison. For women however, the problem seems more intense. The nearly emaciated, amazons that push the latest beauty products or technique; make even the most confident woman question her appearance. Women's insecurities are heightened by these images, and then exploited by the diet, cosmetic, and plastic surgery industries. Every day, new beauty products are introduced to "correct" inherently female "flaws," sucking women into an obsessive and hopeless vortex structured by the concept to aspire to an impossible standard. Images of beauty are everywhere today. Pictures of handsome men and beautiful women fill the pages of television, magazines, and newspapers, and abound billboards, products and the Internet. This world has always been preoccupied with the body and beauty, and in spite of millennia of evolution, the notion of human beauty has transformed itself from realistic and abstract representation into psychological programming that taps into our deepest innate behaviors and exploits them for a multi-billion dollar a year industry. IT’S NOT EASY BEING A GREEN MOVIE By Bill Merrill In 1973, Chuck Heston starred in Soylent Green, a sci-fi movie. He played a police detective in a dystopian future NYC where massive overpopulation had led to extreme overcrowding and forced strict government rationing of limited resources. “Green” movies come in two varieties, those with the color green prominently featured in the title, and those that are “green” in dealing with environmental themes. A couple of examples of green-titled flicks are the Green Lantern and Green Hornet movies, both superhero stories. In my view, the 2011 Lantern movie was better than Hornet, because Hornet was an unsuccessful blend of comedy and action. Our second category of “green” movies is those with environmental themes. An obvious one was Al Gore’s lecture on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth (’06). A newer film that’s generally considered less “preachy” about environmental issues is carbon nation, with its intriguing subtitle: “a climate change solutions movie (that doesn’t even care if you believe in climate change).”

These “green” movies are just a few of many. Can you think of one you like?

What is a Credit Score? By Lance Thorington When applying for credit, the initial actions that majority of credit officers act upon is checking your own credit score. Even though not all credit officers inform us about what is a credit score, we are rated to it accordingly. Offers that we get also depend on that credit score. Thus, understanding your own credit score is very significant. You should be more informed about this for future needs or use. This article shall focus on helping you understand what is a credit score. After reading this, you should be able to realize, analyze and act upon to improve your credit score. The credit score is computed as the average of different elements from your own credit report. Basically, the credit report is broken down into 5 several sections and every one of these represents a part of the overall score. Every category about credit report information fills up a definite percentage in the overall score. Initially, it is safe to conclude that the largest percentage is pulled from the category that comprises of payment and credit history. The issuer shall observe and look up at all the kinds of payments like retail accounts, credit card payments, installment loans, etc. The issuer will particularly check the count of unpaid or delayed payments, problematic account numbers, and time passed since payment that was last skipped and those detailed stuffs. Following the checking of these matters, you should take into consideration that when you are to compute the credit score, the following important aspect to look at is the overall amount owed. The total amount is checked accordingly with its absolute value and there is also checking with regards to its credit limit proportion. There is also relevance regarding the number of your accounts that have balances. The next thing that the issuers shall look up is your credit history. This basically tackles the amount of credit that you've had and it's time allocation. Being able to understand matters about your credit score is important to you and due to this, you need to be aware or well informed about the credit lines' length because it will be monitored and it shall play a huge role for computing the final credit score. Being able to fully understand your credit score is not just the essential aspect of it, being able to manage it also equals its significance. To improve your credit score, here are some effective tips that you can easily apply for positive results: In order to improve credit score, try paying bills on time. This is a very significant act. By paying the bills early, you shall be preventing yourself for more damage. The importance of paying the bills on time is almost the most important aspect of them all. If paying the bills on time would be a hard thing to accomplish from your side, then get away with paying in a 30 day time frame from the due date. But if you fail to miss this date, then most probably it will end up on the credit card report of your account. Also, try to maintain a low balance on your credit cards and different revolving credit and just do your best to pay off debt. Another useful tip is to avoid transferring credit to a different credit card. Overall, you need to know what influences a credit score. But basically, almost everything that you financially do regarding your credit is interconnected with your credit score. By being more aware of these things, you have a better chance of improving your credit score, starting now!

Bob Dickson and The Olympic Gym Original research and story contribution by Renee Votta Bob Dickson was the soul, spirit, and driving force of The Olympic Gym for 25 years, opening it in 1977, spreading out with a second San Antonio location, and then consolidating to its new present location in 1986. Bob left us almost two years ago, but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of family, friends, and fans-especially the devoted clients who fondly remember him from The Olympic Gym. Bob was a firm believer in weight training. He said it makes anyone better at whatever they do. Even those whose business is sales can benefit from weight training, Bob would say, because weight training stimulates blood circulation, enhances the immune system, relieves stress, and helps clarify the thought process. It makes you more flexible and strengthens joints. And Bob was someone who knew what he was talking about. He owned a gym for 27 years, and was a boxer for 15 years with 36 wins against 2 losses. Bob was involved in the promotion and judging of body builders for over 20 years. Those are some hefty credentials. But Bob was also one of those folks who everybody likes. That's just another reason his gym became so popular. Affectionately known by some of his clients as "the Third-World Trainer" because he didn't own a fax machine, a computer, or a cell phone, Bob was one person they trusted with their training and physical health. Some drove over 50 miles one way just to work out under his direction. There were two marriages performed at the gym, and Bob was the godfather to many of his clients' children. Born and raised in San Antonio, Bob attended Jefferson High School, after a successful career as an amateur and then professional boxer in the 1960s, he served in the Coast Guard Reserve. Returning to San Antonio, Bob worked with the city recreation dept. teaching fitness classes and boxing to underprivileged youth. Bob opened his first gym in 1975, in San Antonio. It was called Macho Men, after the popular song "Macho Man" by the Village People. He spent a whole $300 on equipment. From those humble beginnings Bob's business grew quickly. By 1986 his Olympic Gym was listed as one of the top ten bodybuilding gyms in the USA. Bob had a tremendous respect for the strength game. He was an active participant in the fitness business for over forty years, judging and promoting bodybuilding shows and working powerlifting events across the nation. He attended the very first Powerlifting Nationals and every such event for the next two decades. Today, under the current ownership and direction of JD Wennermark, The Olympic Gym continues the proud tradition begun by Bob Dickson. The sound of metal hitting metal is music to the ears of the people who frequent this place. It means shedding pounds, gaining strength, increasing stamina, getting VERY healthy, and maybe even winning contests. As Bob envisioned it and as JD continues the enterprise, this is a serious gym for serious weight trainers interested in developing and maintaining strength and overall good health. Most gyms in San Antonio are set up largely for aerobics exercise, but not this gym. They do have a small aerobics room with a few treadmills, but this place is primarily and proudly geared to weight training.

Some incredible talent has worked as personal trainers in this gym, including two-time Mr. Texas James Butler; Mr. Universe competitor Juan Marquez; and two-time national powerlifting champion and two-time World's Strongest Woman, Jill Mills. The Olympic Gym has provided the training environment for some notable celebrities, such as National Powerlifting champ Milo Mills; San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson; WWE wrestler Triple H; Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman; WWE/WWF competitor Vince McMahon; and powerlifting legend Gene Bell. Celebrating 39 years of operation, today's Olympic Gym staff brings the same quality training to its clients. JD adheres to the same principles that made this gym one of the top bodybuilding gyms in the country. If you want to get healthy, shed some pounds, build physique, all through some real weight training in one of the best gyms in the nation,

The Olympic Gym is your place to work out.

A smile is something most of us take for granted By Dr. Robert Lemke But what about people with missing or painful teeth? Chances are, they try to hide their smile or, even worse, just not smile at all. What could be sadder than to be happy and not be able to show it? And what about people who love someone but cannot kiss him or her? Bad breath, gum disease, or infected teeth may be preventing them from showing their true feelings. While “a smile is happiness you’ll find right under your nose,” for many people, under their nose they find a set of ill-fitting dentures, missing teeth, or painful carious teeth. Moreover, it is well known that untreated dental infections affect the health of the patient’s whole body—not just the mouth. Gum disease (known as periodontitis) and dental abscesses can worsen arthritis, trigger headaches, cause sinus pain, worsen heart conditions, and cause a general lack of energy. The inability to eat favorite or nutritious foods affects both health and quality of life. The good news is that modern dentistry gives these people hope at last. Bad teeth can be removed and a new set of teeth placed—all in the same day. This is known as the All-On-Four Technique. The dentist removes the remaining teeth—if there are any—and places four dental implants into the upper or lower jawbone (or both). The implants are positioned similar to the legs of a chair to provide optimal support to the new teeth that the dentist connects to the four implants. Because the teeth are connected, they give strength to each other. In this way, a patient can walk out the door with new teeth in one day and begin smiling again. Some patients are afraid of the procedure because they believe it will be painful. In almost every case, however, there is little to no pain. How can this be? In a normal extraction, the socket that remains after tooth removal is left open.

In the All-On-Four Technique, however, the hole is filled by the dental implant so that air or liquids do not touch the exposed bone. Furthermore, the new replacement set of teeth rest on the implants, not on the ridge. Because the implants support the teeth, there is no rubbing or wearing away of the bone. Patients who have teeth extracted without implant placement will lose a significant amount of bone. Many studies show that a 30% decrease in the height of the jawbone and a 50% decrease in the width will occur after a normal extraction. The use of implants prevents this bone loss. The procedure is not inexpensive. Dental implants are an investment in a person’s health and quality of life. A good comparison is to the purchase of a car. A study conducted by Polk on automotive research in 2012 showed that Americans will buy 9.4 cars in a lifetime and will finance most of these purchases.

Isn’t a set of permanent teeth for a lifetime of smiles a far better investment?

Would you like to have smooth, clear skin for life? No problem--just don't ever let your skin see the sun! By the time you're 40, your face could be just like a baby's bottom - literally. Dr. Robert Lemke, of San Pedro Facial Surgery, says that most wrinkles and pigmentations on the face, chest and arms are not due to aging, but rather due to the sun's damaging rays. Women and, increasingly, men feel a desire to have clean, smooth skin. This desire for great skin is seen in the cosmetic industry's annual sales of $35 billion in the United States alone. The only true "anti-aging" product is sunscreen. Other products have little to no true scientific research to substantiate their claims. In the past ten years, the occurrence of melanoma has increased from one in five hundred persons to one in seventy-five. So what can one do to prevent or decrease the sun's damage? It's easy; use a sunscreen or stay out of the sun. Sunscreens vary significantly in what their active ingredients and how effective they can be. A product that is touted to be water proof or sweat proof usually lasts only 80 minutes. A product that is labeled as water or sweat resistant only lasts 40 minutes. The chemicals that are in a sunscreen also vary. Avobenzene, for example, protects the skin by reacting with the sun's rays. Once the chemical is "used up" then it does no more good. Avobenzene loses 36% of its strength after only 15 minutes in the sun. Zinc oxide is a very commonly used agent that blocks the skin from the sun. It is one of the oldest protectors, in use for the last 300 years. A newer form of zinc oxide is ground down into small "micronized" particles that protect the skin without the white-paint look. Octyl methoxycinnamate (OCM) and oxybenzone blend very nicely into the skin, but can cause irritation on people with sensitive skin. With any skin care protection regimen, one must follow some guidelines: Use the product daily or several times a day if sweating or swimming. Use an SPF of 15 or higher. For men and women, use a lip balm with a sunscreen agent. For women, use a foundation that includes a sunscreen and wear a hat when possible Some basic care can keep your skin looking young for quite a while. These are habits that we should not only follow ourselves, but should pass on to our children.

How Nadal and Federer Use the 5 Fundamentals of Tennis Technique to Rule Tennis By Paul Gold Mention the names Roger Federer & Rafa Nadal in any tennis circles and you will normally set people off to wax lyrical about how great they both are. And rightly so - they are two of the greatest tennis players of all time! These guys gave us two of the greatest ever matches with the Wimbledon final of 2008’ the Australian Open of 2009! Now whilst we all get plenty of opportunity to marvel and chat about their shotmaking, their insane levels of super-human mental toughness and all the other qualities that go to make up a tennis champion most people get it wrong when asked to name the number 1 thing these guys do every single point! The reason why you and nobody else seems to get it straight away is because it is so……easy!!! Apart from being ridiculously easy, it is also No. 1 on the list of what we call technical fundamentals that govern good tennis playing and note I am not saying that every player must play a particular way or the same way, BUT every good player can/must have these fundamentals in their shot production. The good news is that SO CAN YOU!! You can start working on it (and them) RIGHT AWAY and improve these 5 fundamentals and improve your stroke play and your tennis game dramatically. Who knows, you may start winning more tennis matches as a result. You only need to work on them one at a time before moving on to the next and you will really see a difference. So what is this ultra simple, all important first fundamental of good tennis technique that underpins the rest and is vital for great tennis? The first of the 5 is………….wait for it……………WATCH THE TENNIS BALL!! There, I told you it was easy. Watching the tennis ball (not just looking at it - there IS a difference) allows you to most importantly judge the flight of the oncoming tennis ball. It should go without too much further explanation that without doing this you will struggle to know where the ball is going to be, never mind trying to make a good contact. Its part of what we call your reception skills and without this in place, the other 4 just won’t happen.

So, how do you do it? How do you make a start? Well the main things to work on are 1. Keeping your head forward (and therefore your bodyweight) 2. Keeping your eyes level (not tilting your head to the side) 3. Keeping your shoulders level (not tilting your shoulders) 4. Starting with and keeping a balanced body position (try to incorporate balance type exercises into your training schedule to help you with this). Basically if you can keep your head still and your shoulders level, it becomes much much easier to anticipate all of the oncoming shots as well as judge the balls flight. Doing this on every shot you play and not just the first shot of the rally really needs to become a habit you get into. Again, depending on your playing level and experience as well as how quickly you feel at ease with each element, you can decide to look at one element at a time or maybe tackle several of them. The choice is yours (and you are free to change) so, just like I said at the beginning of this piece - if you want to have a big impact on your strokes and indeed your tennis game as a whole, it is very very simple - start watching that ball.

START WATCHING THE TENNIS BALL TODAY! For the other 4 fundamentals plus lots of FREE Reports and tips go to www.tennisinfoproducts.com Article Source: www.isnare.com

Experience Corpus Christi

Experience Corpus Christi, and you will encounter a rich blend of nature, culture, history and unique entertainment. Texas' largest coastal city, Corpus Christi is a vast wonderland of sea, sun and fun! A walk along the city's Bayfront will lead to the discovery of Corpus Christi's treasure trove. The tranquil beauty of Corpus Christi's waterfront, bay and beaches is a persistent lure for visitors as well as locals. And on any given sunny afternoon, the Marina, located on Corpus Christi Bay, is host to an array of colorful sails moving in, out, and about the bay. Pack a lunch, find a sunny spot, and enjoy the view. Or show up for the Wednesday night Sailboat races and join in on the fun. Located on the central Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico, this sparkling city by the sea is the gateway to one of the world’s natural wonders, the Padre Island National Seashore. Just a 30-minute drive from downtown Corpus Christi, Padre Island is one of only a few nesting grounds for the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. Padre Island beaches stretch out along more than 130 miles of the Gulf. A popular year around attraction, area beaches, bays and inland waterways offer some of the world’s best conditions for water sports, such as kiteboarding, windsurfing, jet skiing, kayaking and sport fishing. Corpus Christi has much more to offer than natural beauty and outdoor sports. A multitude of world-class visitor attractions also call this beautiful city home, including the USS Lexington Museum, the Texas State Aquarium and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The most famous aircraft carrier in the history of naval aviation, the mighty USS Lexington, is docked at Corpus Christi Beach just over the Harbor Bridge. Walk her deck and corridors and discover the significant role this “Blue Ghost” and her sailors played in our nation's defense for nearly 50 years. Her World War II record is second to none, and she remains a memorial to the Americans who served her, those who served her country, and all who died defending freedom. She continues to serve today as a museum and educational facility. More than three football fields long, the museum has air-conditioned tour routes of exhibits and restored vintage aircraft. Tours include the hanger deck, Foc’sle, commanding officer/admiral quarters, sick bay gallery, flight deck, and bridge. Exhibits include the "Above and Beyond," an overview of the last-ditch Kamikaze campaign waged by the Japanese, and a high-tech flight simulator for those who want to capture the sensation of flight. Experience the new Joe Jessel Mega Theater and take an amazing journey in sight and sound. Immerse yourself in three-stories-tall giant screen images and thundering digital sound. It is the first and only theater capable of showing movies filmed in IMAX® and other large screen format installed on a historic naval ship.

Are you a history buff? If so, then the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History is a must see. Explore the remains of three Spanish treasure ships that ran aground on Padre Island in 1554. Visit the Columbus Quincentenary exhibit, and learn the history of encounter and exchange beginning with Columbus’ 15th century voyage to the New World. Watch the kids imagination come alive in the interactive Children’s Wharf exhibit. And while you’re there, don’t forget to take a peek into the Museum’s outstanding collection of seashells and learn about the creatures that inhabit them. Remember to look up as you tour the "Gallery of Cultural Encounters," featuring an authentic 16th Century carved dome ceiling, originally from Castile, Spain. To top off your visit, take a tour of the replicas of the Ships of Christopher Columbus, the Santa Maria and the Pinta on the Ship's Plaza. Finally, after a day of soaking up the sun and taking in the sites, it's time slow down, relax and enjoy a delicious meal of fresh seafood, Tex-Mex, or Texas Bar-B-Q. The city's downtown and marina area is filled with first-class restaurants, as well as a multitude of fine eateries along "restaurant row" on South Padre Island Drive. Corpus Christi is like no other place. Invigorating as well as relaxing, the beauty and unique attractions of the area will entice you to come back time and again!

South Padre Island

How Padre Island got its name. By Steve Hathcock © 2014 Padre Nicholas Balli, for whom the Island gets its name, was the first European to bring ranching to the Island. He and his nephew Juan founded El Rancho Santa Cruz de Buena Vista (later known as the Lost City), where he kept cattle, horses and mules. The actual ranch and outbuildings, located about 26 miles north of the Islands southern tip, were little more than thatched huts known as jacals. Because of itsnatural fences of water, the Island was a perfect spot for raising livestock. In his will, written in 1811, Padre Balli stated that he owned 1,000 head of cattle. In addition to his large herds of cattle the Padre also built the first church on the Island for the conversion of the Karankawa Indians and for the benefit of the ranch hands and their families. Ironically, Balli never lived on the Island that bears his name today. He left the day-to-day operations of the ranch to his nephew Juan, who also held title to a sizable amount of the Island. The Padre spent most of his time on the mainland ministering to the spiritual and material needs of his people. Padre Ballí died on April 16, 1829 and was buried near Matamoros. For many years during and after Balli’s ownership, the Island was called various names including St. Bagin Isla de Boyan, Ysla del Vallin and Isla de Santiago. Juan operated the ranch until the storm of 1844, after which he moved to the mainland. The ranch was abandoned, but only a few short years would pass before its new occupants arrived on the scene. (Next Month John Singer’s Lost Treasure) The first reference to the name of Padre Island was in the April 24, 1841 Edition of a British publication by the name of “The Old London Newspaper.” The editor wrote “Notes from Matamoras bring no news of importance. All was quiet there, and the talk of a war for the re-conquest of Texas had ceased. Three Texans who had served with General Canales were killed on Padres Island.” (A force of about fifty men, the entire company of Minute Men of San Patricio, and a few volunteers from Gonzales had staged a surprise raid to the southern tip of the Padre’s Island. A Mexican Captain and nine soldiers stationed at a rancho were captured and taken back to San Patricio to await a prisoner exchange for some Texians being held in Matamoros. Statements made by the prisoners and a group of Irish settlers living on the extreme southern tip of the Island confirmed the Mexican forces numbered only one hundred regular infantry stationed in Matamoros and a handful posted throughout the interior.) The New York

Tribune was the first American newspaper to adapt the new name; in its January 3, 1842 edition, the editor reported “Several enterprising citizens of the West, have for some months past been engaged in the transportation of salt from a bayou near Padre Islands, to the Western ports. Many hundred bushels of this salt have been removed and sold at the rate of 4-6 bits a bushel.” The name stuck and by 1844 the Island was almost exclusively referred to as” Padre Island.” Today, a statue of Padre Balli with outstretched arms in greeting, stands at the eastern foot of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway on South Padre Island Texas.
