Richard Sanchez Ácenar Executive Chef
Richard Sanchez’s passion for the culinary arts was born in his family’s kitchen where he often spent time as a young boy asking his mother and abuelita questions about the homemade meals they prepared. His passion for cuisine took him a world away from his San Antonio home to the highly acclaimed New England Culinary Institute Coolbar in Montpelier,Vermont. After graduating from culinary school, Richard continued his training at Boulevard Restaurant in San Francisco then returned to San Antonio to work alongside his mentor Bruce Auden at Biga, followed by stints at the Radisson Hill Country Resort, H-E-B bakeries and The Omni Hotel at the Colonnade. Richard has been in Ácenar’s kitchen since the doors opened in 2005. He worked his way up from pastry chef to Executive Chef. Ácenar’s modern take on Mexican cuisine and the cool and hip interiors continues to wow locals and tourists alike along the banks of the worldfamous River Walk.

Chic & classy atmosphere, stellar Italian cuisine at “Piatti” Cuisine: Italian Restaurant & Bar Hours: 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Sunday Address: 255 E Basse Rd #500, San Antonio, TX (210) 832-0300 Alcohol: Wine & beer, mixed beverage Handicapped access: Yes Reservations: Yes
Chic, classy -yet-casual-fine dining with a flare, that’s how I will describe this wonderful restaurant in the heart of the Quarry Market. Great service butler style, this Italian restaurant has a diversity of scrumptious dishes that will make your mind fly to a stellar cuisine out this world. Starting with a grilled Portobello mushrooms, mozzarella, basil sun-dried tomatoes, pesto and balsamic vinegar, this blend of flavors with excellent taste and aroma will open your appetite to continue exploring the menu.($9.00). Following with simple but tasty spinach, Portobello salad, ($9.00) this plate will continue preparing you for the savor travel. The organic chicken breast “Alla Mattone” ($19.00), suggested by Jordan our spectacular waitress was very moist, flavorful and tender. They grilled this almighty dish with seasonal hash and topped with a citronette sauce base: champagne lemon zest, “delizioso!”. We accompany with a house Pinot Grigio for a supreme pairing. If really hungry order an extra side dish of vegetables ($5.00) grill zucchini & yellow squash, perfect roasted corn with addictive seasoning Calabrian pepper fresh basil. The plate is very eye appealing and has a good bite profile. To complete what I called “a Ratatouille moment” (food memory that has always stuck with you) order a rich chocolate cake with strawberries and extra cream ($7.00) , YUM! Eat it, and I promise blissful dreams.

Unbelievably flavorful Modern Mexican cuisine at “Urban Taco” Cuisine: Modern Mexican Style Hours: 111:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Sunday Address: 290 E Basse Rd #105, San Antonio, TX 78209 (210) 332-5149 Alcohol: Wine & beer, mixed beverage Handicapped access: Yes Reservations: Yes
Not your typical taqueria. Well, is a modern and upscale Mexican style-yetcasual restaurant. Urban Taco is been for the past two years, the corner to be at and to been seen together with friends and family in the prestige area of Alamo Heights. Adrian Llanos, owner of this chain in San Antonio, is been doing a magnificent job with this urban and fashionable restaurant. With a variety of dishes and street tacos, my favorites are the tostadas “Hongos” (Mushrooms) ($11.00) garlic & spices sautéed shitake mushrooms, oven roasted tomatoes, crema, cilantro & goat cheese served over a black bean puree & tomatillo serrano salsa, every bite is a delight! But you can’t start eating without a set of Chips & Salsa Trio, home-made chips with your choice of 3 salsas ($3.25), I promise you will ask for more!. Waitress please! Off course an “Infused margarita” on the rocks, specialty of the house, will help you to rock the palate and get your tummy ready for the ambrosial carnival of colorful dishes. Attentive customer service, friendly and relaxing, this innovative restaurant will make you come back again at no time.

Tavern like atmosphere, divine eatery and wine cellar at the “Boiler House” Cuisine: American Grill & Wine Garden Hours: 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday Address: 312 Pearl Pkwy, San Antonio, TX 78215 (210) 354-4644 Alcohol: Wine & great variety of local beer, mixed beverage Handicapped access: Yes Reservations: Yes
Boiler House Texas Grill & Wine Garden, opened in the historical “Pearl Brewery”, this unique tavern like but chic bistro is been awarded many times by “Wine Spectator Magazine” for their unique selection of wine. Be prepared to talked with house “sommeliers” experts and pairing your delectable food with deep and complex choices. We were amazed and impressed by the hospitality of executive chef Jeff White, and learned about how thoughtful menu he creates keeping it focused on farmfresh ingredients. We started, chef suggestion, with artisan cheese served with quince saba and grilled bread ($15.00) a luscious combination and flavorsome, accompany with a house Cabernet Sauvignon. While devour this “god’s” tidbit our waitress show up with a bowl of Popcorn Grits & Crème Fraiche, and yeah! It was on the house!, chef know his stuff!. I will ask for this again. My stomach can think about more pleasant thoughts than finishing the night with a favorite shrimp and grits, a dish I heard was to die for, and quite honestly OMG! Far beyond my expectations. Creamy, juicy, hugemangus shrimps with a grandma cooking aftertaste. Make my heart happy! :>). www.boilerhousesa.com/

CULINARY RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
Chef Stefan Bowers culinary career developed its initial roots while growing up in Berkely, California during the early 1980’s. Living in a city on the forefront of the organic movement gave him his first look at the now popular “sustainable” culinary food culture. In his 20’s, at the end of a 5 year Navy career as a helicopter rescue swimmer (where he logged 1,000 flight hours reading cookbooks in the back of HH-60 helicopters), Stefan had the good fortune of meeting two sisters from Positano, Italy. This transpired into a year long apprenticeship under Chef Catirina Di Lucia at restaurant Trattoria Positano in San Diego, California under Chef Catirina, Stefan never touched a burner. In fact, he never left the cutting board, which gave him the opportunity to physically learn proper technique while observing true Italian cooking principles from the ground up. In 2003, with the desire to attend culinary school, Stefan made a blind move to Houston, Texas in order to attend The Alain and Marie Lenotre French Culinary Institute. While studying at culinary institute he worked at Restaurant 17 in the Alden Hotel under Chef Jeffrey Armstrong. In 2004 he moved to San Antonio (his wife’s hometown) where he went on the become the Chef de Cuisine under Chef Jason Dady at the acclaimed Lodge of Castle Hills. In 2008 Stefan was given the opportunity as Executive Chef at 20NINE Restaurant and Wine Bar. Three years into his role as Executive Chef at 20NINE Stefan was introduced to entrepreneur Andrew Goodman. Shortly after their inroduction in 2011 FEASTopened and became an immediate success. Stefan considers this collaboration to be the best opportunity he has had to express his personal ideals about menu style and cuisine while working in an elegant and contemporary restaurant that has “style to burn”. This exciting alliance with Andrew Goodman is sure to make FEAST one of the most dynamic and “experience” driven restaurants for a long time to come.

Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon By Dan Cooper
From Cadillac we have come to expect nothing but the finest in interior appointments, quality materials and appearance, and overall luxury. In all of these expectations, the CTS Sport Wagon does not disappoint. The sense of a combined richness and quality is immediate and unwavering. This car gives you what you ask of it, and more. The CTS Sport Wagon is just what you would want a sport wagon from Cadillac to be. It is impressively styled, both inside and out. The outside is impressive in combining an angular look with a softness of contour that seems somehow impossible to achieve. Yet, there it is in all its beauty. Everything from its gently sloping roofline to its sassy tail treatment seems to be perfectly integrated. The interior is appointed with the richness of wood grains, leathers, and polished metal accents. The car has the feel of a sports car coupled with the utility of a wagon. And it is quiet, solid, comfortable, and fun to drive. What more could you ask? With the ability to seat five, or carry home hundreds of dollars in groceries (in 58 cubic feet of cargo space), this car has the convenience of utility that sports cars cannot offer. And with the feel of luxurious comfort coupled with performance, it also provides the sensations of personal accomplishment, free-spirit attitude, and just plain fun that a mini-van can't match. The distinctive styling of this remarkable car is not just impressive. It is exciting. It is stylish in a way that is reminiscent of both high-performance vehicles and the Cadillac heritage of years gone by. The fin-like appearance of the tail lights harks back to the tail-fin era. The dual exhaust and Kamm-effect tail conceal the utilitarian features of this car beneath a beautiful skin. If you are wondering whether you would sacrifice performance or fun by taking the Sport Wagon instead of the Coupe, fear not. That Kamm-effect improves aerodynamics and hence, performance. With a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the car's tight handling is enhanced. And in the absence of a poll we can only speculate, but it is my guess that more people prefer the styling of this model over that of the coupe. If the stylistic appeal of the car were not enough, you get the innovation and quality of a Cadillac in the bargain. The rear lift gate has a memory that you can pre-set. When you open it in your garage, the car limits upward travel so you don't hit the ceiling or garage door. Pretty nifty. But that's certainly not all. Historically, Cadillac has been on the cutting edge in innovative features. The CTS Sport Wagon offers plenty of that. The seats are ventilated when the weather is hot, and heated when the temperatures are colder. This Cadillac's windshield wipers can automatically sense how hard it is raining and adjust the rate of wiper operation accordingly. A climate control system automatically adjusts the cabin temperature based on the temperature outside. In recognition
of vehicle speed and weight distribution, the headlamps automatically level themselves on the road ahead. And that's not all they do. Borrowing and perfecting a technology introduce many years ago on the 1948 Tucker, the CTS Sport Wagon senses which way you are turning and automatically rotates the headlamps' light beams up to 15 degrees in that direction, allowing for far better visibility. Light-pipe technology contributes to Cadillac's subtle Ambient Interior Lighting, offering a glowing illumination that literally wraps around the passenger compartment, emphasizing the car's commitment to passenger comfort and convenience, not to mention its aesthetic beauty. The standard 3.0 liter engine is powerful enough, but the optional 3.6 is noticeably stronger. And, incredibly, it doesn't sacrifice anything in fuel economy from the standard engine. The six-speed automatic transmission is smooth and flexible, and can be over-ridden according to driver preference. With that 6-speed automatic, the car is rated at 18/26/21 mpg (city/highway/combined). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives this car their highest crash-test safety rating, five stars out of five. There is plenty more to tell, but why don't you just go check one out for yourself. Freelance writer Dan Cooper can be reached at dancooper09@gmail.com

Do You Need “GREEN” Coverage in your Homeowners’ Policy? It is generally true that green building practices come at a somewhat higher cost. This cost increase is defrayed, usually rather quickly, by lower maintenance, heating, and cooling costs. But now, there is one more way to make this greening of the construction industry pay you back. Some homeowners’ policies now offer the option of an additional “green coverage” clause. Insurance helps cover the cost of repairs when your home is damaged. Homeowners who purchase additional “green coverage” may reap some extra benefits. In the event of damage, this coverage can help in rebuilding to green standards, covering the increased costs involved with energy-efficient components and environmentally friendly materials. So, if your home is damaged, the bottom line is that it can save you money now as well as in the future, in the form of lower energy-related bills. But there is an added benefit for some homeowners. If your home was already rated as green by your insurance company, your premiums could actually be reduced after the damage has been repaired to even higher green standards. Texas has some of the highest homeowners’ insurance premiums in the nation, so any possible reductions are a welcome relief. Repairs, reconstruction, and replacement are costly enough. Replacement of damaged property with more energy efficient doors, windows, and appliances, as well as more thorough weather-proofing materials, can be highly cost effective. If you have the extra coverage to reduce these extra expenses, you will be money ahead in the long run. There is, of course, the added cost of this policy extension. And there are probably limits on the available coverage for specific kinds of damage. But these are relatively minor considerations if your home sustains major damage. Weighing all of these factors and shopping around to compare prices could net the average homeowner considerable savings in the event of damage, as well as providing an extra layer of peace of mind. Ernest Stuart, LOVE/LOSS EP Rating: 4 Green Thumbs Up! Trombonist Ernest Stuart has an impressive resume playing with people such as the Roots and Branford Marsalis. Now he has released LOVE/LOSS a three-song, twent-minute set (streaming free on Soundcloud. The songs are a groove-heavy blend of jazz and rock elements. Stuart's 'bone playing is strong throughout, although his improvisations get a bit too wild for my taste on the opening "BMJ." Of Stuart's band on this set, I was particularly impressed with guitarist Ben Karp's work, at times raging with his electric instrument, at other times laying down hushed tones, letting the chords vibrate softly into the either. Karp's playing reminded me at times of fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth's. The whole Ernest Sturat thing comes together in a most cool fashion (pun intended) on the EP's extending closing tune, "Coldest Day of the Year."
Cassandra Wilson, TRAVELING MILES 2014 Reissue Rating: 5 Green Thumbs Up! The great jazz label Blue Note records has been celebrating its 75th anniversary by reissuing some of its best known and/or highly regarded titles on vinyl. One of the best such resurfacings has been singer Cassandra Wilson's marvelous Miles Davis tribute called Traveling Miles. Ms Wilson's singing has never been more expressive or compelling than it was in 1999 when this album was recorded, and the song selection, backing band, and sound quality were all superior. The tunes are a mixture of Davis songs, Wilson's original compositions, and covers that Miles Davis put his distinctive stamp on. One of the finest in the latter category is Cassandra's version of the Cindy Lauper hit "Time After Time." She sings the melody with many different notes than the familiar "hit" most of us are too familiar with, and her rich vocal style is warm and elequent (think late=period, cigs-voiced Joni Mitchell).
Wolfgang Muthspiel, DRIFTWOOD Rating: 3 Green Thumbs Up! Electric guitarist W. Muthspiel's newest album as a leader, Driftwood, is on the German jazz label ECM Records. ECM is famous in jazz circles for a certain aesthetic, both in their abstract cover art and in the usually free-floating styles of the musicians who have recorded on the label, people such as Pat Metheny and Eberhard Weber. Terms like "ethereal" and "atmospheric" are often used to describe music on the ECM label, terms that would apply to this new Muthspiel album as well, and I would also add "nebulous." The guitarist is accompanied on Driftwood by bassist Larry Grenadier (with who he's often played) and top-flight drummer Brian Blade. While their musicianship on the album is solid, it often sounds too carefully refined to fit within the "ECM Sound," with notes and chords that drift in and out a songs' creative plane like the title's flotsam. No one tune stands out, making Driftwood a somewhat pleasant but undistinguished musical mass.

MOVIE REVIEW: BOYHOOD Directed by Richard Linklater Rating: 5 Stars! The new film BOYHOOD is drawing rave reviews and much press coverage, all well deserved! As you might have heard, the movie is unique in that director Linklater used a core cast of actors (including Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) and filmed over a TWELVE-YEAR period. The actors aged and matured as their characters did, which was especially important in the development of the "Boy" of the film's title, played a remarkable discovery named Ellar Coltrane. His character develops from an elementary school youngster to a college freshman, enduring hardships and experiencing joys along the way. BOYHOOD feels very "real" although it is drama; the characters and the story evolve organically as they go through divorce, young love, parent-child conflicts, and much more. As "real" as it may be, the story in this movie is not my story. Not all of it was something I could relate to, but still every scene over its nearly three hours captivated me, as I also appreciated Linklater's skill as a storyteller and filmmaker. He's amply demonstrated those traits before, as in the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy, but Boyhood will likely be considered his masterpiece. The film was shot at various locales around the state of Texas. I'm sure that contributed a bit more to the sense of "realness" I got from it (although my friends in other states & countries who have seen Boyhood have commented on how authentic it felt to them too). There are also a number of minor roles filled by locals and unknown actors, who very effectively become teachers, waitresses, etc. Austin troubadour Charlie Sexton plays a musician named "Jimmy," just one more brilliant casting stroke. BOYHOOD's soundtrack is also topnotch, with an outstanding selection of period appropriate songs by the likes of Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, and many others of lesser and greater renown, but all the tunes are perfect for the scenes they appear in. BOYHOOD has received an "R" rating, particularly for frequent bad language, so be aware of if that offends you.
VIDEO REVIEW: SNOWPIERCER Directed by Bong Joon-ho Rating: 4/5 Stars! The best science fiction movie I've seen so far this year is Snowpiercer, in English but directed by the Korean director of The Host. It's set a couple of decades in the future, on a completely frozen Planet Earth. In our day, a procedure to reverse global warming went horribly wrong and destroyed nearly all life as everything froze. The few survivors live aboard a specially designed "global train" that travels perpetually around the world. The train is self-sustaining, propelled ever-onward by the "Sacred Engine." The story revolves around the "tail section" inhabitants, stowaways and unpaid passengers who live horrible conditions, revolting against the wealthy "front-section" people who run things. Besides the fascinating overall concept -- the train rushing past views of icy devastation -- many of the individual scenes are very cool. The director and his aides came up with strange, Gilliam-esque setting, such as the aquarium car, a glassed-in corridor passing through an ocean habitat. It leads to an exclusive dining car that serves sushi -- twice a year. The cast includes several notables such as Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Ed Harris, with Chris Evans as the lead rebel. A word of warning: parts of the movie look more like a horror film; Those scenes have some blood and gore. Bill Merrill

Sensational Silver! Looking for that perfect statement piece? set yourself apart with stunning one of a kind pieces from jewelry designer Efrain Arroyo ! The beginnings of this beautiful jewelry line started with the collaboration of Ronald Podell and David A. Flores. The essence of this jewelry lies in the hand crafted silver beads. Each hollow bead with its organic shape is unique. Elegant in their gracefulness and wear-ability, these necklaces, bracelets and rings are showstoppers. Podell and Flores met in San Francisco in 1985 where David Flores was an assistant to the designer and ethnographer Donald Cordy and his wife and partner Dorothy. Eventually David returned to Mexico joining Podell in his jewelry business. Flores quickly became an integral part of the enterprise when he suggested the addition of semi-precious stones to pair with Podell’s stunning silver beads. Heeventually took over the business when in 1991 Ronald Podell moved back to the USA In 1995, Flores hired Efrain Arroyo to work with him. Efrain’s skills as a jeweler developed and blossomed so much so that he became the principaldesigner in 2000. Uptown Gypsy When foot traffic at Unikas, a Southtown boutique, started to slow, owner Betty DeLeon figured she had two options: Shut down the business or create a more upscale store. Putting the “up” in upscale, Betty moved up north to The Alley on Bitters and opened Uptown Gypsy. The business is located at 555 W. Bitters Rd, Suite #106. Uptown Gypsy is Bohemian chic with a classy, sexy feel. “We are on the verge of risqué, but not completely,” Betty says. With an expanded selection of lingerie and corsets, Betty’s focus is a one-stop shop where customers can purchase an entire outfit from undergarments to the accessories. Along with the women’s eclectic casual and intimate apparel, Uptown Gypsy also carries local artisan wall art, jewelry, and gifts. Betty has made it her mission to create a comfortable, fun place for women and men to come shop. “We welcome suggestions and offer opinions when helping people select items for themselves, wives, girlfriends, or significant others,” Betty says. “So it pleases me to know that San Antonio now has a new place to shop for an eclectic outfit or sexy piece of lingerie.”
Uptown Gypsy is also in the process of expanding. They will be opening a second location at The Little Shops in Crossroads Mall in October. More information can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ UptownGypsyBoutique.

SA MONTHLY SUITS: Wayne Lowery of Shayne Foods, Inc. Wayne Lowery, Junior, is the founder and culinary artisan at Shayne Foods Inc., a San Antonio-based, family owned business with a huge following across Texas. Their product line - created with family recipes handed down for generations - includes homemade whole wheat pastas, BBQ sauces and pasta sauces, salsas, condiments (olives, okra, pickles) and more in a variety of flavors and "heat" levels. The lineup also includes delicious Texas jams, jellies, and preserves. Everything is made by Wayne and his team in the company's newly expanded corporate kitchens in North San Antonio. Wayne, whose hands on culinary training came from spending years in the kitchen with his family, says he has spent many hours in the test kitchen and tossed a lot of "misses" before landing on recipes he says are just right. And based on sales over the past 8 years, fans agree. This fall, Shayne Foods is expanding its business model and reach launching Shayne Foods Fundraising. The "game changing" program allows schools, athletic groups and other organizations to do all of their fundraising sales online. Shayne Foods' robust new fundraising website includes a secure, password protected dashboard so each organization can manage its campaign and track its sales in real time. The innovative program eliminates door to door selling and broadens potential sales since orders can be placed and shipped anywhere in the US. "Our goal in developing this program has been to eliminate the money management and product delivery hassles associated with traditional fundraising programs," says Lowery. "There has never been an easier way to fundraise because we do most of the work!" And Lowery says because Shayne Foods' products are popular, proven sellers, organizations are excited with what the company has to offer. “People love fresh tasting, delicious products, and that's what we are all about," says Lowery. "Couple that with a simple as pie fundraising program where we do all of the heavy lifting, and you have a win win for organizations of all kinds including PTAs, sports and dance teams, and non-profits." Lowery says plans are also in the works to open several Shayne Foods retail stores in the next few years.

SA MONTHLY SUITS: An Interview with Jeremy Lander, Director of Sales and Marketing, Omni Hotel at the Colonnade By Dan Cooper - dancooper09@gmail.com Jeremy Lander's record of successful accomplishments in marketing and sales for the hospitality industry goes back to his scholastic preparation for this career choice. After growing up in Arizona's Phoenix/Scottsdale area, Jeremy attended Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff, graduating in hotel/motel management. He got a job right out of college with Best Western International, working in world-wide sales. Briefly, he also owned his own hotel management consulting firm, Hospitality Training Associates. "After that I got into four- and five-diamond hotel sales, starting with some properties in Phoenix." He was with Destination Hotels and Resorts, "for a number of years, in both Scottsdale and Vail." With Vail being one of the most prestigious resort areas in the nation, it was great experience. But while "the Cascades was a good spot to be, I got a little tired of the snow." "I wanted to get back to this area of the country. I have a lot of family here in Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country area. So about five years ago I took a job as the Dir. of Sales at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center in downtown Austin. Then in May of 2012 I went on to become the Director of Sales at the Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin." In July, 2012, Omni purchased the Barton Creek hotel. "After helping to convert the Barton Creek Resort into the Omni Barton Creek, I was asked to come here to San Antonio to take over as Director of Sales." DC- Over the past couple of years, what would you say might be the one thing that has given you the most pleasure or meaningful satisfaction? JL- "Without a doubt, being here with my family in the Hill Country, with my mother and father, as well as a brother and his wife. And I recently had a second daughter, Gwen, who will be two in October, and I've got a nine-year-old daughter, Gracie. Having the chance to both work at my career and be around my family at the same time is something I had not had the chance to do until now. Getting back here to the Texas Hill Country for the past five years and more, has been my greatest pleasure, because it's my favorite part of the country. "Omni Colonnade currently employs just over 200 full and part time associates, and we are very proud of the service we offer to our clientele. Our Bolo's Restaurant just had one of our chef's, Sam Boisjoly, featured in July's San Antonio Monthly Magazine. Our food and beverage department is currently ranked number one across all properties within the Omni brand. And all of Omni properties are well-known for the quality of their food and beverage departments, so we are really proud to be ranked number one in a group as fine as this." DC- Tell me a little bit about the hotel's meeting facilities for banquet, boardroom, or ballroom functions. JL- "We can handle groups of any size from ten people up to 500, and we have a total of more than 23,000 sq ft of meeting space. The two most notable large meeting rooms are our 10,000 sq ft Grand Ballroom and our Colonnade Ballroom, which is considered a roof-top ballroom on the 20th floor overlooking San Antonio's cityscape." Large conventions and other business-related meetings seem to be as popular as ever, and Omni at the Colonnade books more than its fair share. As business and family visits frequently merge, the hotel focuses on being family friendly. JL- "We are definitely known as one of the most family-friendly four-diamond properties in all of San Antonio. We have two dedicated children's suites. These are two fantasy suites, one, the Aquatica Suite, themed on our partnership with Sea World, and the other, the Omni Discovery Suite, which is a more generally fantasy-themed environment for children." In addition, upon check-in, children are presented with an Omni Kitchen Kids backpack containing entertaining and family friendly health- and nutrition-themed games and goodies to promote healthy eating while on family vacations. Omni at the Colonnade also has both an indoor and an outdoor pool, so the relaxation part of any stay can be a splashing-good success. The Omni: check it out. Or better yet, check in.
SA MONTHLY SUITS: Aaron Garza of ÁCENAR: Hot Mex/Cool Bar By Bill Merrill As many San Antonio residents and visitors have discovered, a trip to the Riverwalk gets even better with a delicious meal and a nice cold beverage or two. Many of my friends have recommended the modern dining experience available at Ácenar. Along with a mouth-watering menu and their "cool bar," the restaurant offers an ultra-stylish decor and one of the largest patios offering a comfortable view of the Walk, our city's most well-known attraction. It's much more pleasant to sit above all the crowds and enjoy the atmosphere. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Aaron Garza, General Manager of Ácenar. He rose through the ranks as a restauranteur, beginning as a busser, then a host, and eventually working his way up to his current key role. Among his greatest memories are from the years he tended bar, including serving a cocktail to one Manu Ginobli. (It was during the season, so Manu only had one.) We spoke about what makes Ácenar unique out of all the dining choices on the Riverwalk. SAMonthly: What is one of your favorite items on the menu? Garza: That would be the Spicy Shrimp, or Camarones a la Diablo! It's garlic- and chipotle-buttered shrimp served over cilantro rice and roasted cream corn pico. SAMonthly: What sets Acenar apart from your competitors? Garza: Besides the modern, non-touristy feel of our restaurant, we provide a more quiet, romantic environment that still puts you right on top of the Riverwalk. It's a perfect place to celebrate a first date or an anniversary, or just to bring a group of friends. We take pride in recruiting top restaurant professionals to be on our staff, and we all work hard to make each visit to Ácenar a memorable occasion. SAMonthly: The Riverwalk is Texas' number one tourist destination. What is your philosophy of customer service in such a high-profile location? Garza: I see Ácenar as a perfect example of San Antonio hospitality. We make visitors feel welcome, treating people like they are guests in our own home.

Mixing Up Your Workout Routine Does a Body Good By Eric Castillo As the seasons change it is the perfect time to get out of the workout rut you may be experiencing. Step outside your comfort zone and explore a new and exciting fitness routine. I'll be the first one to admit that I have my favorite workout when I need to break a sweat, but I've learned that mixing up my routine is what my body isn’t expecting and will always prove to be more beneficial. Over time our bodies adapt to the activities we do every day. When someone first begins, they may find just running down the street extremely difficult. However over time that long dreaded run will become your daily warmup. Your body is changing by adapting to your new fitness routine and is more capable to run the same distance with less stress and effort. This is a great accomplishment, but in the same sense you need to be aware that your body is expending less calories to do the same amount of work. Make sure you increase your distance or run faster to have a shorter time. This is the same when you step into the gym. If weights that were once challenging are flying up with ease you either need to increase the weight, do more reps, or do a mixture of both (my favorite). Challenge yourself by one day doing lighter weights at higher reps. Then the following day try using a heavier weight for less reps. This keeps your body progressing. This is key since it is exactly what you want to progress. Don't underestimate how good your body is at keeping up with the challenges you're giving it. Step outside your comfort zone and add variation. This will eliminate boring workouts, make things fun, and your physique will also surely thank you. Adaptation is a good thing. Don’t fear the change. You've been working consistentlyenough that your body is stronger and able to handle your workouts. You don’t want to plateau, a situation you can avoid by changing your workouts regularly. Key points that I work on extensively with my clients:
Change in frequency How often you lift weights depends on the type of training you’re doing. If you’re following a total body program, you’ll need at least a day of rest between workouts. For that reason, you may lift 2 or 3 times a week. If you’re following a split routine and lifting for different muscles on alternate days, you may lift 4 or more times a week. Changing how often
you exercise will change the format of your workouts, pushing you past your plateau. Some ideas: Try a split routine. Changing from total body training to split workouts will allow you to do more exercises and focus more on each muscle group. Some examples include: • Alternating upper body and lower body workouts • Alternating push exercises and pull exercises • Working opposing muscle groups on different days Try a total body program. If you’ve been doing a split routine, going back to total body training can be refreshing and a great way to lighten up on your training schedule for a week or two. I can’t stress how important it is to mix it up. You don't
have to do one or the other. Try a total body workout one day and then an upper body workout and a lower body workout later in the week to keep things interesting. Remember that you don’t want to work the same muscles two days in a row, so set up your schedule so that you always include at least one day of rest.
Change Your Exercises When you do the same exercises over and over, your body isn't the only thing that adapts. Your brain adapts as well, getting so used to certain movement patterns that you zone out as your body goes through those familiar motions. By changing your exercises, for example doing a hammer curl in place of a regular biceps curl, you activate your muscle fibers in a different way, allowing you to break your plateau. Try supersets. Alternate sets from two exercises from differing muscle groups, and eliminate the rest period between sets. For example, do a set of pushups then immediately do pull-ups, followed by pushups, and etc. I am always looking to help as many people as I can. Feel free to contact me to get some new ideas for working different muscle groups. My clients usually want help with these areas: • Tips for Exercise Progression • Upper Body Exercise Progression • Lower Body Exercise Progression • Abs and Core Progression
Change Your Sets Another simple way to stimulate your body is to change the number of sets you’re doing. Beginners may see results with just one set but, as you get stronger, adding another set or two will offer more challenge. Some studies suggest that one set is as beneficial as multiple sets (providing you lift to failure). However, in my experience, most people don't lift to failure and end up getting more results by doing more than one set. Of course, how many sets you choose depends on your goals, how much time you have and your fitness level. General guidelines suggest: for muscular endurance: 1-3 sets of 12-20 reps, for building mass and strength: 1-6 sets of 8-12 reps, and for maximum power and strength: 1-5 sets of 1-8 reps. Fall is here so what are you waiting for? If you find yourself stuck in the same routine, losing interest in exercise, and experiencing mediocre training outcomes, re evaluate changing your workout program! Roger Federer Roger Federer’s shoe of choice for this year’s US Open is the ever iconic Nike Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour. This latest incarnation of this top of the line shoe has taken another step forward while still remaining one of the best lightweight, breathable, and speed-oriented options on the market. This brand new Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour was designed by legendary Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield and Roger Federer himself, who wanted a tennis shoe that felt as light and comfortable as a running
shoe. It still has the finger-like Adaptive Fit construction in the upper that allows the player to customize the fit of the shoe all the way up the lacing system, providing a perfect, ultra-supportive fit. This latest version features a completely seamless upper with
more modern print designs, making it lighter and faster than ever before. In addition, durability has been improved with re-enforced areas on the toe and medial side. Roger will be wearing a colorful blue and hyper punch colored execution during his day matches and at night he will wearing a stealthy black model with a hyper punch colored swoosh. This particular model is the staff favorite at First Serve Tennis.

This new Adidas model is amongst the most durable and stable footwear offering on the market – built to
withstand the rigors of hard court play and offer unmatched stability. This is the footwear choice of Andy Murray.
Rafael Nadal Sadly this year, Rafael Nadal had to withdraw from the US Open due to a wrist injury and was not able to defend his title here that he captured last year. Nevertheless, I wanted to include his footwear of choice had he been competing in this year’s US Open. Inspired by the strength, speed, and the pure athleticism of Rafael Nadal, the Nike Lunar Ballistec will change the way you think about high performance tennis footwear. Stability and durability is now offered in an ultra lightweight, fast model that allows the most aggressive players have it all. The shoe utilizes the same Adaptive Fit construction that made the Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour so comfortable and stable. Individual dynamic Flywire cables can be tightened or loosened all the way up the lacing system for a perfect, customizable fit. As the cables tighten around the foot, you'll feel the ultra plush cushioning all around your foot, keeping you secure and comfortable with a glove-like feel. Nike’s patented Lunarlon technology in the midsole provides ultra lightweight cushioning and support that's also low to the ground. The data driven outsole and Drag-On cage in the upper give you extra durability where
you need it most, and the shoe is backed by a six-month outsole durability guarantee. It's soft, well cushioned, and lightweight while still providing all the support and stability one could ask for. The Lunar Ballistec is the ultimate all-around performance tennis shoe for the modern player and is Rafael Nadal’s footwear of choice. These are just of few of the new and exciting footwear models we will be seeing on the feet of the very best male professional tennis players at this year’s US Open. San Antonio Polo Club Giving Polo Lessons to Foster Children
It’s been around since 1920, and is believed to be the longest continuously running polo club in the country, but the San Antonio Polo is swinging mallets in a new way in the city. Forget about kings, queens and princes who play polo. The San Antonio Polo Club is bringing this “sport of kings” back to the city where it all started in the United States and making sure everyone can pick up a mallet and hit a ball affordably. Aside from competing in polo matches around the state and at its headquarters just north of the city, the club members volunteer their time on the weekends, to offer low cost or free lessons to children. “This is part of our mission as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to preserve the rich history of polo in the Alamo City,” said Club President Ursula Pari of KSAT 12 anchor fame. “We love our sport, and want to make sure that future generations can as well, no matter their socio-economic standing,” she added. As a result, children from various foster homes are among the first to take advantage of the San Antonio Polo Club’s horses, instructors, and facility which is located at 285 Obst Road in Bulverde next to Tejas Rodeo. Roy Maas Youth Alternatives children from Meadowlands have been getting monthly lessons for nearly a year now and recently exhibited what they learned at Olmos Basin Park for the Mother’s Day Polo at the Park event in May. Hundreds of polo fans and newcomers were able to see the game up close in the city for the first time in 40 years or so. Since then, polo clinics and even a kids camp have been held at the club. It’s a documented fact that equine therapy can assist in the healing process for troubled or abused children and adults. Mental health and wellness experts are unanimous in their opinion that the partnership offered between horses and those with broken bodies and minds manifests itself in very real therapy that cannot be duplicated in other treatments. “The positive personal growth and confidence our foster students have enjoyed is quite obvious to everyone involved in our efforts. We believe this sport magnifies the health benefits of regular equine therapy as a stress reducer and confidence builder for all who pick up a mallet,” said Pari.. For more information on how you can donate or participate in the San Antonio Polo Club, you can visit www. sanantoniopoloclub.org or write to sanantoniopoloclub@gmail.com.

Attorney
Nico La Hood By Christina Ochoa
The inside of a courtroom is what Nico La Hood would call his domain. The passionate San Antonio attorney has been seeking justice and defending clients for 12 years. Born and raised in San Antonio, La Hood knew it was in his DNA to pursue a career in law. Following in his father’s footsteps, the almost 42-year-old attorney got his start studying law at St. Mary’s University. “My pops inspired me to become an attorney,” says La Hood when describing who influenced him the most. “My pops has been practicing law for 50 years and I was raised around the idea that a lawyer wasn’t a snake or an opportunist. Being a lawyer is an honorable profession that does good for the community.” He has a wide array of experiences under his belt. While being a criminal defense attorney, La Hood has built long lasting partnerships with his clients. “I think it is important to be connected to your client because you’re in the trenches together,” says La Hood. He has been recognized statewide amongst the top 2.5 percent attorneys in the State of Texas in litigation and advocacy. He had the honor to be a special prosecutor in four different counties, and was appointed as a Magister Judge by all nine district court judges for two years. He also taught at the Police Academy. La Hood was recently part of a high profile case two months ago when he was defending a client who was accused of stealing close to $7 million dollars from Rackspace and Windcrest. La Hood fought hard and honorably and the jury found his client acquitted of all charges. For La Hood, when he isn’t in the courtroom, his family and his faith are everything to him. Every day he wakes up determined to seek justice, love with kindness and walk humbly with God. His next venture is running for District Attorney of Bexar Country and wants the citizens of Bexar to know he wants to bring justice and provide a safer community for children. “I think a balance is desperately needed in the justice system,” explains La Hood. “They need someone in office who is not looking to be a politician. I want to be a public servant and I think people are hungry for sincerity in public service.”

Spanish 2 real coin. Minted between 1536-72
1808 8 real Coin similar to those found on Padre Island by John Singer
All Washed Up Finding Treasure on Padre Island By Steve Hathcock John Singer, arguably our Island’s best known beach-comber and finder of great treasures, was shipwrecked on the shores of Padre Island sometime in the late 1840s. He is said to have made his living the first year by crafting shingles from a cargo of cypress logs that washed ashore during the same storm that stranded him and his family. In 1854, following a Texas cyclone, Singer and his eldest son Alexander stumbled upon the carcass of an ancient ship that had wrecked upon these shores many years before. It had only been revealed due to the action of the waves created by the cyclone. Amid the timbers, the two found a partially buried strong box containing well over 60,000 Spanish silver dollars or eight reale coins that were of the same size and weight as our American silver dollar. Singer left the Island at the onset of the Civil War but before departing, he and his sons buried a fortune including the Spanish coins and other priceless artifacts gathered from the shores of Padre. In a 1935 interview, Alexander, now in his 80s, related how he and his father had made several clandestine returns to the spot where their treasure was buried, each time removing several thousand dollars in coins. It was a couple of years after the war before the two made another trip to the Island. But they were too late. A great hurricane in1867 swept in and totally inundated the Island, washing away their landmarks in the process. The treasure is supposedly still awaiting some lucky beachcomber. But don’t for a minute think that John Singer’s is the only treasure hidden under the sands of the Padre’s Island. In the June 6, 1869 issue of the Indianola Bulletin, the editor reported: “Mr. H. Seeligson has shown us some old coins that were washed ashore on Padre Island by the motion of the sea. We learn that fully a barrel full was picked up by the people of the Island. They are much worn by the sea. About a hundred years back, an old Spanish galleon sank off of Pass Cavallo loaded with money and wax for the missions. The wax has been floating up on the beach for years and now the loose coins with a salt incrustation are washed up. They are much blackened by and resemble the old pistareen or Spanish two reale coin similar in size and value to our silver quarter. It is strange but never the less true.” The Corpus Christi Advertiser reported seeing several half and quarter dollar sized coins gathered up on the shores of Padre Island that are more than three hundred years old.” An editor of the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer wrote in an article dated 1869, “Similar coins have been picked up from time to time in the vicinity of the same spot for about two or three miles. Judge Curry, a resident of Padre, has seen some eighty dollars of similar coins picked up there at one time. All are quarters or halves.” In today’s coin market, such antiquities could command anywhere from five to ten dollars to several thousand dollars for exceptionally nice copies. Mary’s Bean By Steve Hathcock
Recently, I received an E-mail from Jean Powers of Minneapolis asking about a sea bean she found while vacationing on South Padre Island. I always like to refer questions of this sort to my friend and partner Kay Lay who identified the find as a Mary’s Bean. “They are really rather scarce and quite valued by beachcombers,” Kay told me. “In fact, the Mary's bean is certainly one of the most elusive and interesting of all drift seeds in fact and fiction. Named after the Virgin Mary, the Mary’s Bean is a distant cousin to the morning-glory family. It is also called the crucifixion bean because of a cross etched on one side of the seed. The cross is actually an impression left by the seed when it was attached inside the capsule. The bean is divided into four sections containing one seed each. Internal air pockets keep the bean afloat while a hard woody surface protects the seeds during a journey that can last for years. Mary’s beans have been found along the coasts of Central America all the way to Norway. People valued it for its supposed ability to ward off evil spirits. Reputedly, if prepared properly the bean was known to be an antidote for snake bite while hemorrhoid sufferers were told to carry a male and female seed in their back pockets. The trees of the rain forest near Golfito, Costa Rica, are bedecked with Mary’s bean vines and several other species of sea beans including the sea heart. The seeds get washed down rivers where they drift out to sea. As a drift seed, the Mary's bean is known from Wotho Atoll in the Marshall Islands to the beaches of Norway, a total distance of more than 15,000 miles. This is the widest drift range documented for any seed or fruit. Sea beans and Sea hearts may drift as far or farther, but their precise point of origin cannot be determined. The Mary's bean is unmistakable among drift seeds and its origin is well documented. If you find one, it must have ultimately come from the rain forests of southern Mexico or Central America.” Like most sea beans and drift seed Mary’s Beans can be found year around on the shores of Padre Island. The best place to look for them is along the “wrack” or high tide line. Occasionally you will find a specimen in a local shell or novelty shop but because they are quite rare be prepared to pay a premium for a quality bean. For more information about sea beans and drift seeds read “Don’t Pass the Beans” by Kay Lay which is available at Paragraphs Book Store on South Padre Island and the gift shop at the Black Dragon Pirate Ship in Port Isabel. WEEKEND GET-AWAY Have a Whale of a Good Time in Omni San Antonio’s New Aquatica Suite! The Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade has long been a favorite destination for families traveling to the Alamo City and its newest “attraction” has created quite a buzz of excitement for kids. This year, the Omni Colonnade unveiled its newest kids fantasy suite, Aquatica. Created through a partnership with SeaWorld San Antonio and the Art Institute of San Antonio – this one of a kind suite transports children into an imaginary oceanic world complete with a coral reef and fascinating sea life, as well as all of the comforts of the “modern world” including double flat screen TV’s, video consoles, and Sting Ray bean bag chairs. “You really have to see this suite to believe it,” said Delfin Ortiz, General Manager of the Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade and the visionary behind the project. “Our goal in designing this unique suite was simple: from the minute our young guests literally slide into the room we want them to be mesmerized and inspired by their surroundings.” The fantasy suite, designed by Art Institute interior design student Katelyn Goudge, includes a brilliant aqua-blue “ocean floor,” bubble chairs designed to create the illusion of a beneath-the-ocean hang out, a floor-to-ceiling 3D coral wall; and a built-in salt water aquarium featuring life fish, coral reefs, seaweed and plenty of bubbles. To give kids plenty of room to enjoy their ocean paradise, a pair ofspecially designed Murphy beds unfold from the wall. The awe-inspiring fantasy setting provides plenty of opportunity for children’s imaginations to run wild. For the adults, there’s an adjoining bedroom and separate bathroom. Checking on the kids is easy even when the door between the two rooms is closed thanks to a creative porthole in the door. The Aquatica Suite along with the hotel’s other fantasy suite, is setting a new creative standard for kid-centric hotel suites, and is the talk of the industry across the U.S. For more information about fantasy suites at the Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade as well as other accommodations and services, please visit www.omnihotels.com/sanantonio.

AFTER DARK Adjective Reflecting only a small fraction of incadecent light. A place having little or no light, Night; nightfall.
The Davenport Lounge is best described as a sophisticated gem with a chic Manhattan cosmopolitan ambiance. The three-year-old San Antonio downtown bar has quickly become the preferred destination for young business professionals.
After a long corporate career, The Davenport was the brain child of Andrew Jesus Tejeda whom wanted to fill a void in the San Antonio adult nightlife catering to the 30 and up working professionals.
“I realized there was a need for a sophisticated environment in which young professionals could go to have fun and network. explains Tejeda. His extensive back ground in this market allowed him to take The Davenport from its inception to what it is today. He has achieved this through a hands on approach in everything from choosing fresh produce daily, playing and singing with his band to personally greeting his customers. Tejeda has given The Davenport that magic touch that was needed, creating an alluring downtown destination that is frequented by locals and celebrities alike.
Tejeda’s primary goal is keeping The Davenport classy and chic. When walking into the Davenport, you immediately acquire an East Coast, Manhattan vibe. With live music playing nightly, one can expect a twinge of nostalgia, as 90’s rock music is the core genre of choice. “It brings them back to their college days, remembering those songs which many haven’t heard in a long time. It is a great genre to create a memorable overall experience.” explains Tejeda.
The back room possesses a chic ambience with ample private seating, tall ceilings and chandeliers, it was created with a Vegas atmosphere in mind and is available for private parties and corporate events for up to 200 people.
The bar has a variety of Infused cocktails to choose from, but their signature and best-seller is the Infused Cucumber Martini. Customers experience a unique martini that contains a fresh cucumber puree, chili powder and a special blend of two secret ingredients.
The Davenport also has an impressive selection of Single Malt Scotches, as well as, a notable craft beer selection. Whether on a date, business mixer, attending a private party, or just hanging out with friends, The Davenport’s superb service and attention to detail creates an appealing atmosphere that is not to be missed.
“The Davenport is a classically cool downtown spot that Yelpers love. They serve up sophisticated style and great service. -Lindsay Rodriquez, Yelp San Antonio Community Manager

ART Noun Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature, the conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements; sense of beauty.
GALLERY of the MONTH J.R. Mooney Galleries of Fine Art was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1947 by Joe and Adelle Mooney. Both Joe and Adelle are native Texans. Robert Mooney joined the staff in 1964 and has developed additional locations as well as new artists and marketing for the galleries. The first forays into the art business came when picture framing and artist materials were added to a wide variety of merchandise. Many San Antonio and south Texas artists used the framing provided in those early years. One of the company's most famous early clients was Porfirio Salinas. Salinas, whose artwork was owned by Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, was a client of the gallery and was represented by the gallery until the time of his death in 1973. J.R. Mooney Galleries has provided framing and representation for many of the notable Texas artists such as G. Harvey, W. A. Slaughter, Dalhart Windberg, and Jose Vives-Atsara. All twenty three major artworks displayed in the 1991-1992 G. Harvey exhibition at the Smithsonian Institute titled " The All American Horse" were framed by J.R. Mooney Galleries. Additionally, J.R. Mooney Galleries has provided framing services for every American President since John Kennedy and every Texas Governor since John Connally. The galleries have also supplied the Vatican, the Royal Palace in Madrid, Queen Beatrix of Holland, as well as major collections and collectors in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

Steven G. Smith I began drawing at around the age of 7 or 8 years of age. When visiting my grandparents’ farm, I would copy the cartoons from the Saturday Evening Post, as there was no TV or other form of entertainment after the sun went down and we were inside. I remember drawing at my desk in the back of my 4th grade class and being moved to the front because the students around me began drawing during class as well. From that early point forward, photography, sketching and painting have been a large part of my life. Even while pursuing a career in banking, and then in the publishing and printing industries, I always made time to pursue art. I attempted to “not paint” several times but found it impossible. I painted whenever I could (mostly on weekends) and wherever I could find the space. I painted in the basement, the garage and, for years, my breakfast bar was the impromptu “studio.” I have had a very patient and supportive family. I now have a “devoted” studio art space which allows for more concentrated work. Although my academic degree was in Marketing, I have taken photography, painting and drawing classes over the years at The Columbus College of Art and Design, The Columbus Technical Institute, The San Antonio College of Art and The Southwest Craft Center, now The Southwest School of Art. I believe that my experience in the printing industry has shaped the way that I view subjects, and compose my paintings. I look at things as positive and negative space to be filled; not objects. I now paint full time and believe that San Antonio is a great place to do that. The city has an abundance of art in all mediums, styles, and philosophies; and there is room for all of it. My art is a reflection of people and places that catch my eye,the interesting composition of a scene, the play of light and shadows, intriguing figures, or the emotion evoked. Most often, the basis for my paintings is a photograph as photography allows me to record what captures my attention. When I take a photograph, I am thinking of the painting it may become. Painting is my channel to romanticize the reality of the photograph, transferring to canvas what I felt and thought about that moment captured in time. The painting transcends the photo to become my interpretation of the moment, my representational documentation of it. I am interested in creating paintings that are visually strong. I like to use broad areas of color to show shapes and shadows. And I saturate the color, resulting in a textured, three-dimensional effect. I have an affinity for figures, not so much the likeness but the resulting forms and shapes. And I have a special interest in musicians, stemming from my respect for their ability to create music. My work has been most influenced by Paul Gauguin, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and Vincent van Gogh. Whether through writing, music, or painting, artists are interpreting and sharing their inspiration. My inspiration comes from real-life, and I share through my art what I cannot express through words or music.
