Following a stunning inaugural season, OPERA San Antonio presents Giacomo Puccini’s MADAMA BUTTERFLY on October 1 and 3, 2015, featuring Maria Kanyova as Cio-Cio San and Adam Diegel as Lt. B.F. Pinkerton. The Denver Post raved, “…soprano Maria Kanyova hardly could be more convincing with her appropriately youthful appearance and ability to convey the young wife’s innocence, vulnerability and pain” Both performances feature the San Antonio Symphony, conducted by Maestro Sebastian Lang-Lessing. After garnering excellent reviews for its inaugural season, OPERA San Antonio’s fall production of this emotionally evocative piece is sure to inspire San Antonio audiences!

Rock icon BILLY IDOL will bring his 2015 North American tour to The Tobin Center on October 5th! Idol’s show in San Antonio, is amongst the latest to be announced on Idol’s “Kings & Queens Of The Underground Live” World Tour, which has already played to sold out audiences on three continents. Billy Idol’s self-written autobiography Dancing With Myse-lf was released last fall by Touchstone, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, and immediately reached the New York Times Bestseller list. Idol’s first studio album in almost a decade, Kings & Queens Of The Underground, came two weeks later on BFI Records via Kobalt Label Services. The album was primarily produced by Trevor Horn, with Greg Kurstin also contributing as producer to two songs, including the anthemic lead single, “Can’t Break Me Down.” USA Today declared “with its punkish drive, sneering vocals and roaring Steve Stevens guitar, Can't Break Me Down could have made a great follow-up to latter-day Idol hits.” Sarah Rodman of the Boston Globe reviewed a recent show in Boston: “The lip still sneers, the fist still pumps, the platinum blond dye job is still sculpted into tiny spikes, and the songs sounded great.

Local Musician of the Month

Katy McKenzie

www.KatyMckenzie.com KatyMckenzieMusic@gmail.com

Katy Mckenzie is talented as she is tall standing a statuesque 5’10”. She’s a gifted singer/songwriter with a penchant for clever and catchy lyrics. She has a fresh, sweet yet sultry, country/pop sound with a dash of folk. She’s young at heart, but with an old soul; some of her musical influences are The Eagles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor as well as Miranda Lambert, Kasey Musgraves and Taylor Swift. With a slew of catchy and crowd pleasing original songs already written, Katy’s in the studio working on her first EP. If you're fortunate enough to catch a live performance, you’ll find yourself singing along in anthem to her signature original song “Freedom” or sitting back enjoying her pleasantly sweet and smooth vocals, unforgettable melodies and lyrics; and singing them long after you’ve gone home. Coming from a musically enhanced family, Katy’s love of playing music was first inspired by her late grandfather. During family gatherings he was often playing Mexican Cojunto music on his accordion, guitar or playing the piano while the family would often sing along. It was songwriting at the age of 12 that lured Katy to learn to play the guitar herself. Having taken piano lessons as a young child, Katy decided to teach herself how to play guitar. When she began to truly love to play, the bridge to music and writing came almost instantaneously. Singing and songwriting has become a passion for Katy. Katy is just getting started and has already performed at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts at the official 2015 San Antonio Fiesta Poster Unveiling and at the 2015 San Antonio Mayoral Inauguration Ceremonies as well as the the legendary local concert venue, The White Rabbit. Katy also performed at the 2015 SA Fiesta event, Deco District Arts and Music Festival Medal Unveiling. It was there that Katy was honored to receive a new Gibson Epiphone guitar presented to her by Robert Trevino, Director, Latin Entertainment Relations at Gibson Guitars. In addition to local venues like The Cove, Katy has performed at major festivals such as the Frenchie Burke Music Festival in Lytle, Texas and St. Louis Day Festival in Castroville, Texas where thousands flock to each year. She performed on the Miller Lite stage at the 2015 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, The 5th Annual Barbacoa and Big Red Festival, the 2015 San Antonio Fiesta Oyster Bake and the Deco District Arts and Music Festival. She's a member of the San Antonio based organization Network for Young Artists whom she represents by singing around the city or lending a hand to teach vocal and guitar classes to underprivileged kids. Katy has led the vocal group at several shows such as The Wounded Warriors Project and The Unsung Heroes Awards Gala at The Pearl Brewery. Katy is also affiliated with another non-profit organization, Inspire A Child USA, where she also lends her talent in service to inner city children and youth of the community. Katy has appeared on San Antonio lifestyle and entertainment television shows: KABB Fox 29’s Daytime @ Nine with Kimberly Crawford, KENS 5’s Great Day SA with Bridget Smith, KSAT 12’s SA Live with hosts Jeff Roper and Fiona Gorostiza, WOAI Focus on South Texas with Erin Nichols and Where’s Cleto news segment on News4 San Antonio Today with Cleto Rodriguez. Having trained with a few notable musicians including Grammy award winner Michael Morales, there’s no doubt that many more opportunities and success lie ahead for this talented artist. Big dreams, aspirations, passion and a heart and soul for music drive Katy to continue to work hard on her craft, write songs and perform anywhere she can.

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL CULTURE WITH A CAUSE By: Desiree H. Serna, C.N.P, M.P.A. Charities Editor

If you live in Texas and want to hear good live music, Austin is your destination. In fact, it has even been selfproclaimed as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” The city of Austin is home to a large number of musicians, live music venues and music industries. On almost any given day or night, there are dozens of live shows available. Indeed, live music plays a large part of the culture which “Keep[s] Austin Weird.” In addition to the dozens of live shows available almost anywhere in Austin, in almost any given weekday or night, there are also amazing arts and music festivals unique to Austin’s locality. These festivals attract national attention and further attract tourists from various geographical areas. Two of the most celebrated annual festivals associated with the Austin area are South by Southwest (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival. The Austin City Limits Music Festival is a musical tradition, with its debut in 2002—celebrating its 14 year in October 2015 held at Zilker Park (Austin’s central public park). ACL Music Festival is an annual three day event offering two weekends of 8 stages on rotating incredible artists from near and far. An incredible fact most ACL patrons may not realize is that a generous portion of the proceeds benefit the Austin Parks Foundation (APF), a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization…generating over $10 million for Austin’s parks. APF is committed to improving the quality of life for the 1.8 million people living in Travis County by strengthening parks system. Over the last 23 years, APF has invested millions of dollars improving the health and safety of park users by planting and saving trees, installing shade structures and playscapes, adding trash cans and benches, and improving and expanding trails. So as you are jamming out to your favorite band, grubbing on some good eats or browsing the local arts and crafts available at ACL, know your attendance at the 2015 ACL Music Festival is also helping the Austin community and its parks. Visit www.AustinParks.org and check out all Austin parks have to offer. Donate, join as a volunteer workday, an educational workshop, a movie or even yoga in the park.

SA CHEFS OF

Chef Steven McHugh of Cured at the Pearl By: Desiree H. Serna

Chef Steven McHugh’s restaurant, Cured, serves as a double entendre in a personal sense. Not only is McHugh a culinary genius which lovingly hand-crafts cured food, but he is also a lymphoma survivor. When contemplating the restaurant’s name, “Cured” was proposed. The name seemed to fit, reflecting personal significance, the menu and values. McHugh was sure to add an interesting philanthropic component to the menu…a portion of charcuterie plates are donated to designated nonprofits, which change quarterly. McHugh's culinary antecedent includes a long and successful tenure working with John Besh's restaurant group in both New Orleans (La Provence) and San Antonio (Lüke). And anyone who knows good eats, knows these famous gastro-pubs! At Cured, McHuges makes use of the purest regional ingredients, paired with organic methods and is built on a foundation of quality hand-crafted cured foods, from charcuterie to pickles. Walking into McHugh’s Cured at the Pearl patrons are greeted with an upscale contemporary, yet raw-farm-feel elegance. The wildly artistic culinary offerings pay homage to traditional pickling, curing and charcuterie boasting modern flourishes and farm fresh ingredients. Lunch, Dinner and Bruch offer good eats, but you can’t beat the Happy Hour. MondaySaturday patrons can indulge in half price house cocktails, beer (PBR at $1), wine and 50 cent fried quail wings drizzled with honey (my favorite)! Cured is situated on the modernized Pearl Brewery campus. The restaurant’s renovated historical building, built in 1904 as Pearls Administration Building, embodies the perfect blend of a contemporary and historical atmosphere. Grand Cru on Goehmann Lane By: Ian Gutierrez

Claude Alexander is, without question, crazy about wine. A Canadian born, former football coach at Oklahoma State University and a partner in a software company, before he made the leap to winemaker. It should be unusual, but so many arrive to the wine industry from other professions. The whole A Good Year thing, I guess. I mean, who doesn’t want to retire on a vineyard! I’ve said this about these others who have…they don’t get “it”. But Claude, I knew…he had “it”! Being in the wine trade myself, it was natural that Claude and I would meet and, no doubt, become friends. San Antonio is really a small town (wink). The first night we met was at a mutual friend’s house. We cooked dinner and drank Champagne and Burgundy. Claude began to tell us about his idea to build a winery in Texas, but not quite like you’d expect. Claude wanted to make wine in Europe, in classic wine regions within France, Italy, Germany and Spain, but then sell his wines at his tasting room in Fredericksburg, TX, just outside of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. Claude Alexander (CA): “The vision for Alexander Vineyard (AV) started 8 years ago after leaving my last job. I was trying to decide what was next. I have always been passionate about wine and it seemed like a natural transition to do something in the wine industry. I ultimately decided to create a place to share with people both my passion for wine and the great experiences I've had in wine travel. I looked at the possibility of establishing AV in Napa but ultimately decided it was not the right place. When I returned home to Ft Worth and researched the Texas wine industry, I decided to visit the region that is called “The Fastest Growing Wine Destination in the Country”: The Texas Hill Country. 8 Hours after arriving, my mind was made up. This was it.” IG: “Tell me about your wines.” CA: “Our wines are classic expressions of the regions in which they are produced. Today we make wines from nine regions in four countries: France (Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Chablis), Germany (Mosel), Italy (Tuscany and Piedmont) and Spain (Rioja). I am fortunate to work with some of the top wine makers in each of those regions. They allow me to influence the wines and have a final say on the blends under my label. While we have only released eleven wines at this time, we have an additional thirty that will be available in the next eighteen to twenty-four months.” IG: “Do you receive a lot of visitors from San Antonio?” CA: “San Antonio makes-up one of our largest customer bases. It’s logical given the proximity to SA, and we have also done a number of events there from farmer’s markets to fundraisers for both the Boys and Girls Club and Texas Public Radio. In addition to SA, we receive visitors from across Texas, every other state in the country, and from around the world! It’s always interesting when Europeans walk in to taste the wines and are immediately reminded of the great wines from their homeland.” IG: “What would one expect when they visit AV?” CA: “It is a very short drive from San Antonio to the Hill Country. When I first arrived here 6 years ago. There were only a handful of wineries in Fredericksburg. That number has doubled and we expect it will double again in the next 2-3 years. A number of wineries around the world started with very humble beginnings, and we are no exception. Our tasting room is currently in a temporary facility, but we have plans in the near future to address that. Visitors have the opportunity to taste great European wines from a number of exceptional regions. Our staff is very knowledgeable and provide an informative experience. We have a number of large, old oak trees to sit under and enjoy

the stunning views of Hill Country.” IG: “What’s in the future for AV?” CA: “Our focus has really been to produce great wines first and foremost. In the coming months, we will begin construction on a new tasting room along with barrel room and storage facility, and some bed and breakfast cottages. Over time, we envision a second commercial building and up to six B&B’s.”

Alexander Vineyards is most known for its bubbles, so stop by and get your Grand Cru on Goehmann.

m m m Mm M m M Bohemian Rhapsody m . m … BBQ Sauce! m By: Steven James Fisher

5 years ago a company started. However at the time, like all great companies, it was just a solution to a problem. Bohemian Rhapsody BBQ Sauce So Good…It Makes Your Mouth Sing, began due to a need for a barbecue sauce without the added sugar and preservatives. Miles Havelka, owner and creator, was unsuccessful to find a store bought barbecue sauce that didn’t list some sort of sweetener as two of the top five ingredients. Flare-ups, messy grills, and negative health benefits, are no more. The bold, thick recipes that Miles has been cooking in small batches in his own kitchen have completely broken from the norm. These sauces are bottled and refrigerated immediately, and only the freshest ingredients are used. While other barbecue sauces are made to sit in warehouses and store shelves for time on end, Bohemian Rhapsody BBQ Sauce isn’t a concoction of preservatives and stabilizers. It is also not packed full of sodium and sugar like many others. His sauces are diabetic friendly, and are low in sodium as well. The Bohemian Rhapsody BBQ sauce’s original blend is a robust and rustic style mixture of natural ingredients that fill the palate with a tanginess, and smokiness that kicks in with just the right amount of zing. The “family” of sauces also include his top sellers Bohemian Rhapsody Tropical Paradise A Luau Flavor in Every Bite, Bohemian Rhapsody Black Betty Whatch it!!! She Bites!!! Misspelled to emphasize the kick to your taste buds. If you’re brave and looking for some heat, try Bohemian Rhapsody Twistedly Hot, A Category 4 of Heat in Your Mouth. If you’re really looking to raise the heat, try Bohemian Rhapsody What Tha..!! Miles Havelka and his fiancée have been in the catering business for years and with that, they have built a long lasting commitment to giving the people what they want. He really delivers with giving America a sauce that is versatile, healthy, and just outright delicious. Every sauce has a unique individual look, bottle, and label. If all of

m m m Mm M

.

this wasn’t enough, Bohemian Rhapsody BBQ Sauce also offers a little incentive to keep less trash in our landfills. When you save ten or more bottles, they’ll send a postage paid return box, or if you’re in the San Antonio area they’ll swing by and pick them up. For your efforts, you receive a free 8 oz. bottle of the original BBQ Sauce, and a $1.00 off coupon for your next purchase. This action is just another reason to give back, which is important to Miles. In the future he plans to employ individuals with mental challenges to work in his bottling setup. His aim is to alleviate these individuals from being viewed as disabled and secure their role in society. Although his lineup of sauces will remain unchanged, excluding a seasonal rotator, such as the current, Mango Tango No Monkey Business This is Good Stuff! He also plans on introducing a line of salad dressings that are lower in sodium and sugar. Again with all fresh ingredients and using yogurt as his base. All of these factors together make for a strong and promising company. With the name, which is in fact not just because of the very popular Queen song, but rather a take on his ethnic background. The Havelka family roots are from the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. Rhapsody, which is a song, comes from the way it makes your mouth tingle, hence creating the slogan So Good… It Makes Your Mouth Sing. With the combination of flavor and heritage, Bohemian Rhapsody BBQ Sauce will definitely make for a long lasting institution in barbecue sauce.

“I Never forget a Face!

By Beauty Editor Crystal Holmes cnj.townes@gmail.com

“I’m terrible with names but I never forget a face”. This common phrase is proof that your face often leaves others with more of an impression than anything written on a business card. With that being the case, doesn’t it make sense that you spend a little extra time caring for it? Your dentist recommends that you get a dental checkup twice a year. You’ve also been advised to get your car serviced every 3,000 miles. More and more Americans are starting to make professional skincare a priority and are including it as part of their monthly maintenance plans. Facials are no longer being seen as just a luxury service but rather an easy way to invest in your greatest asset – you. By setting aside 30 minutes to an hour each month, you are able to consistently maintain and upgrade your “business card”. With all of the facials out there, how do you know which one is right for you? At BodyBrite, we recommend stopping by our studio at The Shops at La Cantera for a free consultation with one of our professional Aestheticians. They will then prescribe the best option just for you. There are affordable solutions for nearly every skin concern and our clients love the results! Our newest service, Microdermabrasion, has quickly become a client and staff favorite. We are proud to offer the top-of-the-line Pristine Diamond-Tip technology. This facial feels like a gentle exfoliation with a tiny suction device that removes dead skin, blackheads, whiteheads and more. What is left behind is gorgeous, fresh skin. Microdermabrasion is also popular for smoothing out acne and acne scarring, stretch marks and other skin issues on the body and, for most people, it can be a wonderful introduction into the fantastic world of facials. For anyone hesitating because they feel guilty for taking time out for themselves, please remember this: Self care is NOT selfish. It’s not indulgence. Eleanor Brownn said it best when she quoted “We can not serve others from an empty vessel.” See you soon at BodyBrite, San Antonio.

WiseWear Media Contact: Britni Ho BHo@WiseWear.com

When Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Wilmink decided to start his wearable tech company, WiseWear, he didn’t expect to be a catalyst at the forefront of fashion and technology. The San Antonio native founded WiseWear in September 2013, and has made tremendous strides towards proactive healthcare solutions since. Wilmink founded the company after his grandfather passed away from a fatal fall due to Lewy Body Dementia. In light of his death, he learned that the fall could have been prevented by reading certain vital signs. This served as inspiration to develop technology to help consumers better understand their health and wellness patterns. Wilmink’s passion for health and technology, paired with his business acumen, makes him the perfect trailblazer for innovative wearables. He earned his B.S., M.S., and PhD in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University, and received his MBA from The University of Texas a t Austin. In the earlier stages of his career, he served as a research associate for the National Academy of Sciences. He also spent seven years as a program manager for the U.S. Department of Defense, where he founded the first terahertz sensing and bioeffects research lab. After his grandfather passed away in late 2013, Wilmink conducted extensive research on the exciting market of wearable technology and narrowed his focus on creating a line of wearable accessories specifically for women. His company recently launched their first line of luxury smart jewelry called the Socialite collection in June. By concealing advanced technology in beautiful accessories, the collection empowers women to stay smart, healthy, and connected to their loved ones in effortless style. Complete with mobile notifications, distress messaging, and detailed activity tracking, these smart bracelets are well-equipped to provide users with everything they need. “It’s important to focus on fashion first, technology second in this day and age because wearable technology is only useful if individuals are constantly wearing their devices,” said Wilmink. Each bracelet is made of brass and plated in precious metals, such as gold and true rhodium, offering water resistance and extreme durability. Such breakthrough technology, paired with appealing designs, make the Socialite a breed of its own in the world of wearables. Wilmink and his experienced team of engineers and fashion designers work out of the company’s headquarters, which is located in the heart of San Antonio’s medical district. The team has spent endless hours crafting their first line of product offerings, working hard to bring the most advanced and stylish wearables onto the market. “My team and I are passionate about what we do and working towards making healthy a habit for all consumers alike,” said Wilmink, who was selected as a winner of San Antonio Business Journal’s ‘40 Under 40’ award earlier this year. “It is our vision to see a healthier San Antonio, a healthier Texas, and a healthier nation as a whole.” Wilmink hopes to expand WiseWear’s product line by integrating advanced sensors into more everyday items, so consumers can commit to their devices and constantly wear them for the most accurate stream of data. On top of running a growing company and balancing his own healthy lifestyle, Wilmink continues to play a vital role in the local community by sitting on the San Antonio Mayor’s Fitness Council and serving as an advisor for several startup companies and accelerators. His Socialite collection is now available for pre-order, with each bracelet priced at $299.95, on www.wisewear.com. Orders are expected to ship in November 2015.

GYM ETTIQUETTE

By Fitness Editor, John Townes IV

So most people have joined or have gone to a gym at least once in their lifetime and as the country continues to become more health conscience, along with employers giving health care incentives to employees in good health, gyms will continue to see an influx of members. Many times its seasonal, we slack off in the winter and get motivated when the warm weather pears over the horizon. Nevertheless, gyms play an important role in getting and staying fit. Since the commercialized gym is the kind of mainstream gym Americans typically frequent, let’s review the basics of “Gym Etiquette”. 1. To begin, first and foremost, re-rack your weights. The rule of thumb is if you put them on, take them off. There is nothing worse than having to take someone else’s weights off a machine or scout around the gym floor because someone left the dumbbells on the other side of the room. All this tells everyone is that those certain individuals are LAZY. Staff and trainers are not exempt to this rule and should be a good example for everyone else in the gym. And to the guys who load up the leg press with eight plates to a side and leave them on when they’re done, they should be required to wear a shirt that says “I’m too weak to re-rack my weights.” 2. If you’re sweaty, wipe off the equipment, plain and simple. No one wants your nasty sweat touching their skin. One would think this is common sense, nope, not so much. 3. During peak hours, don’t work out with more than three people in your group. You will utilize the equipment too long and is not considerate to others that are waiting to use it. 4. Try to keep the grunting down. And yes, even you too ladies. There is nothing more annoying then working out with your Pandora rocking in your ears when it gets interrupted by the tennis match grunting of the guy/ girl working out next to you. Regardless of how much weight you are lifting, the reason everyone is looking at you is not because they are impressed. It’s the gym version of someone smacking their gum in class. Not saying don’t do it just please keep it down. 5. Don’t stare. Most women (not all) veer away from the areas that are occupied mostly by men because of the pet peeve of their every move being constantly gazed upon. Guys, if you want to stare at something go get a magazine but don’t do it in the gym and make others feel uncomfortable. And yes, there is a difference in briefly looking at someone and staring. We are in

the gym to look and feel good, so its nature to look at others but the creepy factor comes in real quick if you do it too long and often. 6. This again pertains to guys. Don’t approach a woman or show her how to work a machine or do a certain exercise unless she asks. It’s the common story of, “my workout was going great until this guy decided to interrupt me by showing me a “new way” to work my arms, and then decided to stand there and talk to me…annoying.” She might stand there and nod to be nice but in her mind she is likely saying “go away.” And the funny thing is, the people around will notice it too. Don’t be that guy. 7. One of my main pet peeves is people not washing their hands. It does not matter that you are in the gym and most people are sweaty, and you say so what’s the point? The point is it’s disgusting. Think of the equipment and weights like your car steering wheel. When you put your hands on it to drive, you don’t want residue from someone’s nasty unwashed hands. These days, even grocery stores have wipes on hand to wipe down grocery carts prior to you touching them. When you are using shared equipment, wash your hands. 8. And most of all; be respectful to others. If you’re going to use a machine after someone, help them take off the weights. Smiling in the gym goes a long way. Don’t walk in with a cocky attitude. No one will be impressed and most will just think you’re a punk, no matter your age. Also, be aware of your surroundings and watch your language. Even though we are all adults, not everyone wants to hear swear words. It will not impress anyone and it will display poor reflection of you. This all may sound like a lot to remember but overall it’s really a short quick list. If you go back over them again, you will notice it really comes down to two basic principles: Common sense and the respect for others around you. It’s great that you are at the gym. You should definitely enjoy your workout but remember to always practice proper gym etiquette. Manners matter.

FOOD ENZYMES By Fitness Editor Skie Molinar

There are 4 categories of enzymes: 1. Protease digests protein. 2. Lipase digests fats. 3. Amylase digests carbohydrates. 4. Cellulase helps break down cellulose to digest fiber. Our body produces endogenous enzymes and we get exogenous enzymes from raw foods. Fruits and Vegetables eaten in their raw state are loaded with enzymes. As we age we loose the ability to produce endogenous enzymes, that’s why you constantly read and hear about the importance of adding fruits and vegetables to your diet. We live in a fast food society that eats mostly fried cooked food. Due to the fact that we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, it is extremely important to use supplemental enzymes. Without the proper use of raw foods and supplemental enzymes, our bodies have to work extremely hard to produce enzymes to digest the foods we eat. Enzymes not only help you digest your foods, but they also help you digest your vitamins so your body can utilize them better. In my own personal experience in using exogenous enzymes, I first noticed was better & consistent bowel movements on a daily basis. Less bloating & gas, more energy, less cravings for sweets, healthier hair & weight loss. One of my former clients who was only 24 years of age came in for a fitness evaluation & informed me that she would go without having a bowel movement for 1 – 2 weeks at a time. She stated that she had this problem since childhood. Now in her mid twenties, after introducing her to supplemental enzymes along with a proper nutritional program along with drinking more water, she is now having a bowel movement everyday for the first time in her life. She no longer has bloating, has more energy, lost a few pounds, & her clothes fit much better. Her mother just can’t believe the difference it has made in her life. When a person is that young, they produce enough enzymes to digest their foods & have 2-3 bowel movements daily or after every meal. Therefore, I may not recommend enzymes, unless I come across the same issue as mentioned previously with the young client. Instead the fruits, vegetables & nuts in the Diet-Meal Plan takes care of that issue. The use of supplemental enzymes is important for those of us who compete in Bodybuilding, Figure, Fitness & Bikini. When eating a high protein diet one tends to get constipated, therefore the use of Protease enzyme is the best choice.

LIMITLESS FIT By Andrew Gomez, Fitness Editor

Hello, my name is Andrew Gomez, most call me Drew. I am twenty two years of age and grew up here in San Antonio, Texas. I graduated from East Central high school in 2011 in a small town right outside of San Antonio boundary called Adkins and from there did some further education at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and so it began. My fitness career started in Corpus as a student working out late night in the university recreational center. At the time I was eighteen years and had no idea of what I was doing with my body in the gym but to lift heavy and try to eat “clean.” I was that guy that would lift awfully too heavy for my strength and would only go half way down on bench press. My form was horrible. Well, four years later, after working as a personal trainer for both Gold’s Gym and Lifetime Fitness, I am my own boss running my own Personal Training business where I personally connect with clients who desire a healthy lifestyle change, or improvement. Now I’m here with SA Monthly Magazine, as their Fitness Editor, talking and sharing with you my knowledge and passion for the Health and Fitness Industry and how we can adjust our lives to living healthier and happier. I hope to reach out to everyone in San Antonio and connect with you all about living a better you. With that being said I’d like to start off with a quick tip on nutrition. Most of you start restricting yourself from different foods and put yourself on a “diet” to lose weight. Yes, if you diet and take out foods you love, you will lose weight. But what happens when you come off that diet and go back to your regular eating habits? I’ll tell you. You’re going to gain twice the amount of weight back because you restricted those foods out of your diet for so long and now that they’re back in your system, you are shocking the body and it changes in a negative way. In order to live a healthy lifestyle, you want to make sure you’re enjoying every second of it physically and mentally. In order to do this, be flexible with your dieting. I call it flexible dieting. Instead of restricting foods from your diet, you restrict calories! Put your daily caloric intake at a deficit and don’t go over that amount of calories each day. Now, you also want to make sure you’re eating more then 3 meals a day including snacks because this is what keeps the metabolism rolling to burn fat and not store fat. The amount of macronutrient and calorie intake versus activity is what determines if our body burns fat, gains muscle or maintains. These numbers are so important to your body when it comes to exercise because if you’re not taking in the

amount of calories your body needs to reach your goal, then your exercise sessions aren’t 100% effective. Remember, you can’t out work a bad diet. For more advice on nutrition or training, continue to read our monthly article on fitness as each article from now on will be about a specific topic that will take some guess work out our your training, and will get your closer to your goals more efficiently! If you have any topics you’d like for me to discuss, or any questions about personal training, please don’t hesitate to contact me at drewtimefitness@yahoo.com. Thanks for reading and will see you next time!

Myra Perez

I consider myself the quintessential American girl, but with a twist. I was born in California to Mexican parents who encouraged me to embrace my American culture and at the same time, retain my Mexican traditions. Together they raised me and my three brothers, and taught us that hard work and dedication pay off. Early on, my parents encouraged me to follow my dreams and reiterated the notion that “I could be anything I want to be.” Their advice and support are things I have carried with me throughout my life. I grew up in Moorpark, a medium sized city with a small town feel. I attended elementary, junior high, and high school in this wonderful city. Following my high school graduation, I was accepted to California State University at Monterey Bay. This was a huge accomplishment for me and a great honor for my family because I was the first in my family to attend a university. I graduated in May 2012, and began to work towards meeting requirements to attend medical school. Considering there isn’t a blueprint for life, things did not go as planned. In December of 2012, I became engaged, therefore, my focus changed. Like so many other women, I began to fret about my weight and made it my mission to be a “skinny bride.” When I became engaged I weighed 175lbs with a body fat percentage of 38%. Within 6 months, I lost 35lbs. On my wedding day, I weighed 138lbs with a body fat percentage of 28%. Although I met my goal of being a skinny bride, I realized I was not happy with my body and felt insecure. In November of 2013, I began to lift weights and noticed my body’s transformation. The transformation was not only physical, it

was also mental, and emotional. I felt happier; my energy increased, and most importantly, I learned to love myself. For the first time, in a long time, I felt alive! My journey of self-discovery led to a change of heart. I decided against pursuing a medical degree, and instead decided to become a personal trainer. In becoming a personal trainer, I knew that I wanted to be instrumental in helping women find that “it”. That “it” that allows them to love what they see in the mirror, that “it” that makes them feel powerful, that “it” that creates confidence, that “it” that improves their personal relationships, and that “it” that makes them rediscover their inner beauty. Now that I was fully aware of what I wanted to do, I also came to the realization that I wanted to approach fitness from a women’s perspective. As a woman, I know what struggles other women experience; therefore, I believe my approach to fitness

is realistic and relatable. I want women to know that being healthy doesn’t mean you need to substitute meals with shakes or salads. I want them to know that being healthy doesn’t mean you have to stop eating your favorite foods. I want them to have an in-depth understanding of nutrition because in doing so, they will understand that eating healthy can be fun and innovative! Believe it or not, I still eat Mexican food! When I started my fitness journey, I promised myself that I would incorporate my favorite Mexican dishes into my healthy lifestyle. I am happy to report that I have kept my promise and the results have exceeded my taste buds’ expectations. I believe women are the cornerstone of society, therefore, if we empower women, we empower our communities, and the world. This is the reason I aspire to create a movement. In the future, I would love to open gyms that are specifically geared to meet women’s needs. I want to establish a foundation that can provide nutritional information and workshops for women who need a jumpstart on their fitness journey. Locally, every six months, I plan to offer free months of training to a woman who is ready to embark on a journey that will change her life. In an effort to enhance my knowledge and bring my goals to fruition, I have decided to attend the University of Incarnate Word in the spring to receive my Masters Degree in Kinesiology. My goal in life is to teach women that health is the key to longevity and prosperity. Upon learning this, they will pass this knowledge to their children and as a result, we will have a stronger and healthier society. MYRAPEREZ.COM 210-598-7933 FitMyraPerez16@gmail.com

Wayne y Kondoff wayne-kondoff.artistwebsites.com

Daybreak. Beating the morning alarm to wake him, Wayne Kondoff is already checking the weather reports. He gets himself together as he mutters to himself how he’s “gotta catch the morning light”. While everyone else is still in their sleepy dreams, Wayne grabs his carefully prepared camera bags and runs out the door. Some of these unconventional times and moments are nothing new to this guy. He loves it.. The anticipation of what he is going capture in that lens is exciting to him. “Great timing” or “happy accidents”? Maybe? It doesn’t matter because he is grateful for having those moments to just be there to catch what the day grants him. Wayne Kondoff loves the creation of his art photography. Kondoff is a self taught photographer. He will tell you readily that he loves to talk about the whole photography process to anyone that will listen. Kondoff admits to taking every opportunity to “pick the brains” of fellow art photographers and enthusiasts, absorbing any tidbit of knowledge they are willing to share. Kondoff is proud to say he was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas . The Kondoff family have rooted themselves here since his great-grandfather immigrated from Bulgaria, met and married his native San Antonian great-grandmother in the late 1800’s. Continued next page

His cousin Mary De La Garza first introduced photography to him as a boy and loved it ever since. Family vacations, weekend road trips, and “wild hair” adventures were all up-forgrabs for recording his colorful “kooky’ shots. Kondoff challenges himself, capturing the right light and colors in his landscapes and nature shots. He seeks out different subjects for his “rustic” looking photos. Capturing time and old stories in weathered looking subjects such as buildings, cars and some people make great shots. He admits “there is quite a story you can capture by looking at someone’s face”. Wayne Kondoff is a business owner in San Antonio. Along with his wife Margaret, he owns Majestic Massage. Wayne and Margaret are Licensed Massage Therapists by day, and photographer with assistant, any other time they can steal away an evening, weekend and trip. Photos in different cities and states, Mexico, Canada are what Wayne Kondoff chases every year. His home San Antonio is where his creative heart lies. He loves the many sites already known to everyone, but he strives toward the hidden, overlooked, maybe forgotten “Old San Antonio”. When folks ask about certain shots of his, he loves to say “Yes, that was taken here in “Ole San Antone”. The BIGGEST Little Art Scene Art Editor, David Anthony Garcia artistic14uuu@yahoo.com http://davidanthonygarcia.org/

San Antonio has been on the cusp of being a major market for contemporary art for so long that it seems that when it does happen who will notice? There are so many talented artists in this city and some very viable locations to showcase artwork. The problems in this artist’s opinion are the lack and breadth of galleries and opportunities to accommodate the huge pool of talent located throughout the entire city. The mainstays who do provide venues for local art are for the most part located in South Town or the Lone Star district downtown and are fantastic, but create a vacuum leaving those not “in the know” out on a limb. Artists who are showing on a regular basis are also vying to capture the eye of a very small market of collectors who are ready and willing to pay a fair price for great work. Often artists are willing to take far less just to get the work out there and start developing or sustain a reputation. Some Universities are producing artists with a wealth of knowledge in technical ability, but are not providing the skills and business sense to get out there and market once they have left the nest. In many cases even well-known San Antonio artists are not getting the national recognition that they deserve. In a recent interview with Art Historian / Fine Art Consultant Joseph Bravo, I asked if he thought this city was undervalued as an art market, he stated: ”I think the optimum response to that is there are four Mel Casas exhibits up in San Antonio. Extraordinary in their depth and breadth, having spent a month immersed in this work, he was a significant Seminole figure in regional and Chicano art, and a wonderful teacher at San Antonio College. He was a man of cosmopolitan interests and he addressed about every issue in the contemporary art of his era in that heroic body of work and humanscapes. There are 85 paintings up right now any one of which could be hanging at MOMA, The Guggenheim, The Mcneil or The Met. They are world class in dialogue with a canon competing on a first tier level and I will not see them at The MOMA, The Guggenheim, The Mcneil and the Met and they will kick that arts ass on any given day of the week. So are we undervalued “Yes” Here is a fine example of 85 artworks out right now many of which have not been exhibited or seen in many many years, and we don’t see all of the great critics from New York making a pilgrimage to this unprecedented site. How often does one man get a retrospective in four venues in one city for his work. That is significant for any city. We are undervalued. We can produce it here, the challenges we have are in marketing it, selling it, collecting it and administering it. We have no shortage of aesthetic, artistic production in San Antonio, but as far as the cultural infrastructure that is necessary to accommodate that, well we have a long way to go” As an artist who has been very lucky to live my dream on the scene and as an art educator I do believe there is hope as our economy continues to strengthen there will always be value in the beauty of art. San Antonio will continue to grow and I am looking forward to a bright future for this cities artistic merit.

Artist of the Month

Alexandra Nelipa

Alexandra Nelipa, a native of Crimea, has lived in San Antonio for the past six years. In those few years, she has managed to establish herself as one of the leading creative artists much respected by the artistic community. She has also captured the admiration of many art collectors in Bexar County. She’s an outgoing, fun-loving individual who delights in sharing her experiences and stories with others and in the process has made many friends throughout the city, many of whom cherish her free spirit, constant smile and admirable attitude towards others. She has been invited to exhibit her work at several local galleries, among them HighWireArts, Centro Cultural Aztlån. As a college student, she was invited to exhibit every year in the juried student art show and most recently was honored with a monetary scholarship award for her outstanding work in ceramics. Alexa enjoys working with a variety of median oils, acrylics, water colors, mixed media, ceramics and photography. Her subject matter focuses on figurative art from a variety of perspectives. Her artistic inspirations lay in the old Masters. As a child, her mother took her to museums such as the Hermitage and other equally prestigious museums. Later, Alexa traveled on her own throughout Europe and visited museums wherever she went. Those experiences were the seeds that fomented her creative interest in the arts. Her artistic philosophy is one where the artist as the creative inspiration provides the viewer with a work of art that requires of the viewer to become a co-creator in the process of understanding the meaning of the artwork. The work of art can only arrive at its completeness when an audience is present and views the work. In short, the interpretation of the work of art is left up to the viewer.

The Perfect Self A Portrait of Natalia King, Photographer By Erica Hurtak

At first glance, it’s hard to tell if Natalia King’s portraiture is hand painted or captured by camera. After a closer look, you clearly can see the pieces are photographs, but ones that seem to be paintings brought to life. Look at her work for too long, and you’re left pondering Renaissance classics as they were posed, before the brush touched canvas. The richness of color, the depth in her subjects’ eyes and the composition of light can only be described as: life perfected. You won’t find candid shots in her catalogue. What you see in her contemporary pieces, bridal portraiture, pet portraiture and product shots are the sharply honed tools of an artist, learned both on the road, in the classroom and in the studio. In Natalia’s hands, brides become a beautiful mystery to be solved on the wedding night. Beloved pets are given the air of a regal companion with modern flair. And her art pieces are spectacular – the likes of which you expect to see at international galleries. Even her product portraiture is stunning – the kind easily mistaken for the elegant brand advertisements in Vogue. She brings the same artistry to local brands and boutiques, giving them a unique presence in the city. Natalia comes to us from Latvia, where she spent her youth with a sketchbook, absorbing the classics of art and the masterpieces of architecture around Europe. She took her worldly talents to the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she furthered her craft in the realm of digital design. She built a successful career in design before finally falling in love with the camera. What we see in her work today is the perfect marriage of classic art and graphic design expertise. And what we experience in her studio is nothing short of sublime. Natalia brings her vision to each subject, reimagining flawlessness and precision in each face, bodyline and color composition. A creative studio session with Natalia is attainably extravagant. Each session includes full hair and makeup done by the best MUA and HAIR artists in San Antonio, decadent refreshments and artful consultation. Each subject is made to feel somewhere between model and monarch, posing to preserve a noble beauty for the ages. When asked about her process, Natalia said, “Life is hard. It is full of politics and hardship, and we age. Why not preserve our most perfect self to admire always?” While she is highly skilled with digital retouching and processing, it is her vision of a subject’s “perfect self” that drives her craft. She delivers clients the final product on canvas – tangible, ready to hang and appreciate. The budding photographer moved to San Antonio only nine months ago and has found the art community welcoming.“I have never encountered people filled with such glee. The artists and photographers of San Antonio are so authentic. It’s such a wonderful community,”said King. Natalia’s creative team loves working with individuals from across the city and connecting with brands to give their campaigns an artful touch. LEIGHTON WHITTINGTON

Leighton W. Couture “Je Suis Une Femme” By: Susie LaFredo Credits: Marc Arevalo – Photography, Models – Shelby Turnage and Jennifer Larsen

Leighton Whittington was born in San Angelo, Texas to Glen Owen Whittington and Rhonda Tafolla. He and his family have deep Texas roots and are considered Historical Royalty of sorts. Tafolla Middle School is named for his Great Grandfather and is also the man who introduced Spanish language classes to our public school system. Also, his 3x Great Grandfather’s Journals are featured in the collection of The Institute of Texas Cultures and now Leighton is implanting his name into the history of our city through his beautiful designs of Leighton W. Couture. Leighton has always had a natural entrepreneurial spirit, but his flair for the creative drew him first towards modeling. His first runway event was with Seventeen Magazine, then Vogue and even later with Dolce & Gabbana. All the while he was also a professional ballet dancer which brought him to New York and Los Angeles. It was while he was in San Antonio performing in the musical “A Chorus Line” that he met Fashion Photographer Marc Arevalo. The two developed both a personal connection as well as a creative connection. 15 years later, Arevalo is still at his side helping breathe life into his designs through the lens of the camera. Leighton’s new collection is completely inspired by France, its History, Icons and of course its Fashion. His pallet consists of Ivory, Poppy, Red, Deep Blue along with accents of gold and silver. In fact, 90% of the materials have been privately created and customized in Paris at one of the oldest manufacturers in the industry. It will feature 20 or more pieces ranging from casual street wear to day and café wear to bridal and evening wear. It is being shown as a journey through a young women’s life. From her young single years, then dating, falling in love and finally getting married. His collection is beautiful and soft yet powerful. Again, as before, this collection is made by hand and is all made to order for clients. With a price point covering a wide range in this collection, from a $40 T-shirt all the way to a $10,000 jacket there is something for everyone in the “Je Suis Une Femme” Collection.

Leighton Whittington Interview Q&A by Susie LaFredo Through your journey as an entrepreneur, model and professional ballet dancer, How did you develop your interest in fashion design? I never knew that “Fashion Design” was where I was headed. While I was modeling, I thought that was what my involvement in fashion was supposed to be. I did of course develop an appreciation for design in that time. As a model you get to wear so many amazing things and you begin to learn the difference between “high design” and the items found at your local department store. You might even become a bit of a fashion snob. However, It wasn’t until I made my first garment for one of Marcs shoots out of necessity of him needing something interesting and original to shoot his model in that it occurred to me that this is what I wanted to do. By the third shoot and third dress design I made up my mind. I wanted to jump head first into the design world and started by presenting a 22 piece collection. Where does your artistic influence come from? This is such a hard question for me. This year I finally understood what it meant to have amuse. Our premier model this year, Shelby Turnage has become that for me. The collection itself has been fully inspired by France and its icons and fashion and the ultra styles Parisienne. But the silhouettes and fluidity and lines of the collection have been very much inspired by Shelby. You and your Fashion Photographer Marc Arevalo work closely to breathe life into your designs through the camera. What were your inspirations for the designs you created for the shoot? Well, we actually just shoot the designs in the order that they materialize. We have to find the right model for the garment and then pick locations and time of a day and lighting from there. So, with this collection it has been a bigger task designing the shoots. With everything being inspired by France, we had to create images in locations that have a European feel. That isn’t so easy in San Antonio. But so far, it has worked out splendidly. This of course is evident in Marcs work. And without him creating these amazing images, it wouldn’t be the same. There is no other photographer that I know of, especially locally (not to say that there are not many talented photographers here) that could capture the essence of the Leighton W. woman the way that he has.

Having lived and worked in many cities throughout the country, what brought you back to Texas, San Antonio in particular? Well 15 years ago while in San Antonio trying to decide if I was going to go back to L.A. or New York or a traveling show with my best friend, I met Marc. I could sense such incredible connection between us. Both personally and creatively. So I stayed. However, I also knew that it was important for me to build something here to continue my families legacy in San Antonio. And I think creating an official Fashion House here is the perfect way for me to do that. What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer? I suppose it is a release for my brain. It becomes full of split second images. Almost always something stylish or generally creative. And fashion design has become a way for me to bring these images to life. And when I have fluctuations in mood, that mood becomes inspiring and an entire collection could be developed that way.

“A good water resistance watch will get you through the wading pool area or lounging on the beach” From the boardroom to the beach or pool there are tons of watches to choose from when your lifestyle resolves around water. A good water resistance watch will get you through the wading pool area or lounging on the beach. You may need to consider something with a little more depth if you are going to be swimming in deep water or heading out to snorkel. Water resistant is based on a laboratory pressure test comparable to a swimmer sitting still underwater at a certain depth. Water resistant is measured in a static condition, under the pressure of a certain depth in the water, and velocity is a function of that pressure. Water can force it’s way passed the crystal seal, case back gasket, the stetting crown or push buttons. The one watch that I would suggest is one with some type of screw down crown commonly found on diving watches. A screw down crown ensures water-resistance by sealing the crown to the case of the watch. A seal is created when the case locks with the crown’s internal threads and gaskets. This will fasten the crown down securely into place. The crown is the greatest gateway through which water or dirt enters the case. The screw down crown was invented to make the watch more durable and safer to wear under various conditions. There are plenty of watches that do not have a screw down crown and are general water resistance. Watches that are marked “water resistant”, but do not specify a depth rating of feet (30, 50, 90 etc) are not designed to be submerged below the surface of water. The levels of water resistant range from Diver to High Grade Water Resistant to General Water Resistant. If you are omeone who is serious about learning to scuba dive then I would really research watches for diving. A Jewelry store that sells dive watches and a strong selection of watches can assist you in the obtaining the knowledge for this area.

Jax Roberson opened JAX Studio earlier this year, after 16 years of professional makeup artistry. Last year, she worked on the finale of Project Runway in the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, and will be doing this season’s makeup room as well. She also headed a team of artists for the most recent San Antonio Fashion Week featuring visiting Project Runway designers including Michael Drummond, Joshua Christiansen, Samantha Plasencia, and Michelle Lesniak. Prior to the Project Runway work, she began her career working under Ross Burton who was Oprah’s head makeup artist, before working alongside and studying under Laura Mercier for two years. She then toured the country as a corporate artist and liaison for the Laura Mercier cosmetics brand. She has been published numerous times with photo spreads in various publications, and has done commercial shoots for upcoming ad-work. The JAX Studio is located at the edge of Olmos Park, and is a luxury studio by appointment only for one-on-one private sessions with a specialization in weddings, bridal and portrait photography, as well as makeup lessons. The studio offers not only makeup, but hairstyling, and in-studio photography from a network of partners.

How did you get your start? “16 years ago at UT-Austin, I needed to make some money, & got a counter job for Christmas break. Although I’d never touched another person’s face or done anyone else’s makeup, I found my painting skills translated beautifully. Since I wasn’t using my artistic ability within my major, I really loved the outlet & ability to meet new folks that the job provided. I found I had a real knack for it, & after leaving UT, I happily continued it as my career. I was given incredible opportunities, working with a number of makeup brands. My first major moment was working under Ross Burton on his traveling team. Ross is most famous for being Oprah’s head makeup artist, which tells you a lot about the extremely high level of first-hand training I was fortunate enough to receive. If that weren’t enough, I was blessed with a job studying under & working at the side of the incomparable Laura Mercier. Laura is best-known as Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, & Madonna’s go-to gal, among others, & she created her own successful makeup line from scratch. I toured for 4 years as corporate liaison & lead artist with her, representing her wonderful brand.” What made you jump from corporate placement to private artist? “7 years ago, I was gifted with my baby boy Jack. Spending as much possible time with him meant leaving the corporate traveling lifestyle & settling into one place for most of the year. That way I’m still available for private clients, as well as non-Texas events. In the last few months, I was able to do the Project Runway finale during MercedesBenz fashion week in NYC, as well as serve as the lead artist & hand-pick a team for the San Antonio wing of the show. I built looks with Michael Drummond, Joshua Christiansen, Samantha Plasencia, & season 11 winner Michelle Lesniak. And this September, I’ll be returning to NY for fashion week. Best of all, I still get to pick up my little man at the end of the day.” What makes JAX Studio unique for San Antonio? “We are a luxury appointment-only studio for one-on-one private sessions, using only high-end products. We accommodate brides & their parties, group lessons, hairstyling, in-studio photography & ad-work with a network of partners. It’s something I’m very proud of & look forward to sharing with the people of San Antonio.”

Male Model of the Month

Luis Enrigue Martinez

My name is Luis Enrique, originally from south Mexico, moved to San Antonio about 8 years ago, along with my parents and my two younger brothers. In San Antonio, I attended and graduated from MacArthur HS in 2011 as "summa cum laude" and was also part of the honor society. Currently attending UTSA seeking a degree in Kinesiology focusing in Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy with the goal of becoming a Doctor in Physical Therapy. Ever since I was young I have been involved in competing sports and extracurricular activities such swimming, tae-kwon-do, tennis, playing the piano/guitar, and soccer being my passion. Since 2011 I joined the ranks of a soccer referee, and I'm currently a Grade 06 State Referee. Some of the biggest assignments I've had as a referee are: United States vs Austria, Houston Dynamo vs. Monterrey, and several Scorpions matches here in San Antonio. That's just a quick background of myself, moving to the modeling aspect of my life. I started doing freelance modeling and doing some test shoots in early 2014 in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston thanks to an old friend from

HS who contacted me through Instagram. Later in 2014 around October I was discovered in Facebook through a picture I had posted by a man named Mike Beaty, and to be honest, my first thought was that it was a scam! Turns out that Mr. Beaty was one of the first top male models from the USA who got to tour with Twiggy and Vogue magazine back in the day and is now a hall of fame model. Mr. Beaty referred me to an amazing lady who opened the doors of her agency to me, and in October 18th, 2014, I signed my first contract with Lari Nelson and her agencyLari Nelson Fashion Group. Since then my career as a model took a huge turn, and I was now working as professional model doing commercials, walking in fashion shows for amazing designers, and booking photoshoots. Through Lari Nelson and Mike Beaty, I attended the Model and Talent Expo in Dallas, Texas. Which finding Out Ms. Nelson had Been a Director for This Amazing Event for 20 Years At The Expo,I received 13 callbacks from agencies around the U.S. and the world such as; Next Models (LA), SLAMM (GA), Click Models (NY & GA), Visage (Japan),

Kim Dawson (TX), The Campbell Agency (TX), Wilhelmina (FL), and More. My goal and my dream at the moment is to really excel in everything I do; as a student, as model, as brother, as a son, but must importantly as a person, and to be able to give back/help the fashion community and upcoming models here in SA. As person I want to become a role model, I want my life to become a testimony and Inspire those who want to become professional models. With the opportunities I've been given, I feel like it's my duty to help those who need the advice and want to know more about how to get into this business.

At the age of 21, I am now signed with Kim Dawson Agency and SLAMM Model Management who provide me opportunities as a model and actor. In San Antonio, I am now a Scout and in charge of developing New model for the Lari Nelson Fashion Group. This bio is not enough to really go into detail about everything I've been gone through in life to get to where I am now. It's been a long and tough road for sure, but I have been greatly blessed by God who I thank the most. I'm most certainly blessed and thankful for all the friends, family, photographers, coaches, mentors, agents, that have been next to me this whole time as well. Having a great team behind you and great personality are by far the most important aspects in this industry. You may have the face, the body and all the right looks, but without su pport of your closest friends and family, along with a good personality, one could easily become lost in this industry. Becoming a model or actor is the dream of many people, and I've personally experienced how hard it is to get into the industry. As a mentioned before, with the blessings I've received, I would love to give back to anyone who is interested about this industry. Feel free to reach me out as ask any questions! You may follow me on IG:@luis_martinez93 or contact me via my email: luismartinez93@live.com God bless! :)

Lost Treasure and Ghost Ships of the Past By Steve Hathcock

Baychimo in Vancouver 1931

The cargo steamer Baychimo, built in Sweden, in 1914 for the Hudson Bay Company, spent its early days plying the frigid waters along the Victoria Island Coast of the Northwest Territory trading supplies for pelts with the people who lived in the cold northern wilderness. www.aboltonswebsite.co.uk/hbc_main.html The Baychimo was homeward bound in October 1931, when it became trapped in the ice. The ship was briefly abandoned, but the crew managed to break her free from its icy prison and the vessel resumed her journey. A few days later the Baychimo again became stuck in the ice and this time most of the crew was airlifted to safety. Fifteen men remained behind in the hopes that the vessel could be freed from the ice. A great blizzard sprang up and the crew took shelter in a cabin on a nearby shore. When the storm lifted the ship had vanished and the crew assumed that the Baychimo must have sunk during the storm. A few days later, the Baychimo was once again sighted some forty

five miles away. Again, the crew re-boarded her. A brief inspection revealed the craft to be un-seaworthy. After removing its cargo of furs and pelts and expecting the ship to sink at any time, the crew once again abandoned the old steamer. Incredibly, the Baychimo continued to float on the sea on its own for another 38 years, and was seen many times. Several times the ghostship was boarded, but due to either bad weather or the lack of necessary equipment to salvage her, the Baychimo continued on her last voyage. The Baychimo was last seen stuck in the ice of Beaufort Sea in 1969, and has not been seen since. According to legend, one of the most famous The Flying Dutchman of the ghost-ships, the Flying Dutchman can from an old painting never go home, but must sail the sea forever. If she is stopped by another ship at sea, her crew of the dead will try to send messages to people ashore (who are also long since dead). In most versions of the story, the (Dutch) captain swore that he would not stop sailing in the face of a storm that threatened to sink his ship. The crew and passengers begged him to change course, but the captain, who was either drunk or crazy, swore he would continue to round the Cape of Good Hope until Judgment Day. Monstrous waves crashed against the ship and a howling wind shredded the sails and bent the mast but the captain stayed his course alternately shouting curses at the heavens or drinking great draughts of beer and smoking his pipe. In some versions, the captain shot a mutineer and the crew was infected with a plague or curse. (Witness who claim to have seen the ghost craft, swear that an ungodly blue light engulfs the entire vessel.) The penalty visited upon the crew was absolute, and they would never see port again. Recently, the legend of the Flying Dutchman was used as the theme in the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. During the American Civil War the Union Navy blockaded all the southern ports. The effects of the action were soon felt throughout the south and all would have been lost had it not been for the efforts of a few daring souls who became known as blockade runners. Late one night in October, 1864, one such craft running under the cover of fog, slipped by some Union gunboats at the entrance to Galveston Bay and made it safely to port with its cargo of food and medical supplies. The master of the small vessel, Louis Billings, was preparing to weigh anchor when he was startled by an uncanny wailing from one of the crew. “A strange, old-fashioned schooner with a big black flag was rushing down at us. She was afire with a sort of weird, pale-blue light that lighted up every nook and cranny of her.” He said in one interview. “The crew was pulling at the ropes and doing other work and they paid us no attention, didn’t even glance our way. They all had ghastly bleeding wounds, but their faces and eyes were those of dead men. I rushed forward, shouting to the others as I ran. Suddenly the schooner vanished before my eyes.” Some say that it was the ghost of Jean Lafitte’s pirate ship, the Pride. Lafitte left the island in 1821 not before he burnt down his fortress and the settlement. He then took an immense amount of treasure with him and reportedly buried an even greater fortune somewhere on Padre Island. Later, his ship was ambushed in November 1821 and Lafitte himself was taken prisoner. Supposedly the Pride was sunk near Galveston sometime around 1822-23. The last recorded sighting was in the same waters in 1892. Even today, oil rig workers claim to have seen billowing sails on the horizon just before sunset. Others claim to have heard the flapping of sails and the cry of ghostly voices calling out to each other in the gathering darkness. Perhaps the pirates, like the unfortunate crew of the Flying Dutchmen are Jean Laffite circa 1800 doomed to sail the seas forever. (Lafitte’s treasure remains hidden to this day.)

The Great Train Robbery of 1891 By Steve Hathcock

One of the main reasons cited for building a railroad that ran from Brownsville to Point Isabel, was to break the monopoly on freight and passenger hauling held by Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy. The two partners owned a fleet of twenty six steamboats that had operated on the Rio Grande since the end of the Mexican War. Many of the so called 49’rs made their way to the gold fields of California by landing at Brazos Santiago followed by a river boat ride up the Rio Grande as far as the boats would travel. From there it still was almost 900 miles to the gold fields. The partners amassed a fortune during the 1850s by hauling passengers and cargo from the wharves at Brazos Island to Brownsville where it would be offloaded onto horse drawn carts and wagons. Many businessmen resented the high rates set by the two and decided to form their own railroad. The original stockholders included Simon Celaya, H.E. Woodhouse, Charles McManus and John S Ford, otherwise known as “Rip Ford.” The first two engines of the newly formed, “Rio Grande Railroad,” used so much water that their tanks had to be refilled at a resaca east of Brownsville. Unfortunately, this was not a reliable source of water and the locomotives were replaced with four better ones. Merchants now had a choice over who would haul their fright and what the price would be. The modern world had finally reached the Valley. But progress brings its own hazards. One day in late January 1891, the train to Point Isabel was held up by bandits. The rails had been loosened near Loma Trosada, about twelve miles west of Point Isabel. As the train hove into

site, outlaws pulled the rails apart causing the engine to derail. Eight, heavily armed masked men, sprang out of the brush and ordered the engineer and passengers to “reach for the sky!” Robert Kingsbury, the conductor, tried to pull his pistol but one of the outlaws stuck his gun into Kingsbury’s stomach and growled, “Drop it.” As the passengers were being blindfolded one of the gang hurriedly climbed a telegraph pole. Mrs. Frank Thielen Jr., was looking up at the bandit as he reached out to cut the wire. A sudden gust of wind blew the edge of his mask up and she instantly recognized him as a man she had seen in a Brownsville store earlier in the day. One of the passengers, a traveling Presbyterian minister, threw his wallet containing about $500 in cash into some high grass and recovered it later after the thieves had left. After robbing them, the bandits locked the passengers inside a box car. A passing boy heard their cries and freed them by breaking the lock off with a length of rail. The bandits escaped with over $80,000 in silver coin. Large rewards were posted and two of the men were quickly captured. They had been traced by an iron wrecking bar made for them by a local blacksmith and from tips offered by various citizens. The rest of the gang escaped into Mexico. Most of the money was recovered but some of it is believed to still be buried somewhere on the prairie between Brownsville and Point Isabel.

In just one year after joining New York Life Insurance Company, Ruth is being awarded and recognized for her hard work and has made Career Council^! When asked about her success and how she has accomplished it, her answer is simple: “It’s not what I do, it’s how I think.” Her mentality has always been that failure is not an option….”There is no “Plan B”. There is no other way to lead my family but to succeed! What we do as Insurance Agents and Financial Service Professionals is remarkable!! I care too much for the people around me “not” to succeed.” One person,..one family, at a time. ONE OF THOSE DAYS By: Jeremy McGilvrey, founder TheSecretToSuccess.com

Typically, I try to keep my articles short. But today I have a personal story to tell you. Have you ever had “one of those days?” A day when everything that can go wrong does? I believe Murphy named a law after this. Monday was that day for me. On a scale from 1 to 10, my frustration level was at a 13. So much so, this song perfectly describes my Monday: So You Had A Bad Day. Actually, it began Sunday night. I was kept up most of the all night by a whimpering puppy. The poor thing had been neutered two days prior. And between being emasculated and having to sleep with a plastic cone wrapped around his neck – my baby boy cried and cried long into the nights and early into the mornings. With hardly any sleep, I woke up to this horrendous smell Monday morning. Apparently, severe diarrhea’s a side effect to the surgical procedure baby Marley had. After cleaning up several piles of feces (four to be exact), I checked my email. A message instantly appeared notifying me of an enormous accounting error. Attempting to block the accounting nightmare out of my mind, so I could focus on an important meeting I had in less than an hour – I sprayed half a bottle of Febreze in the air, then rushed out the door. As I pulled into Starbucks for my meeting (the meeting I personally confirmed the night prior), my cell phone rang. It was the person I was suppose to meet with. He cancelled! Less than 10 minutes before we were suppose to meet…he cancelled! The nerve! A lot was riding on this meeting. Throughout the day, the trend continued. If it wasn’t one thing, it was another. That was, until I received a text message from my friend Jonathan. The message read: If you can, jump on this FAST: 712.432.7606 CODE: 623383# Les Brown live. Immediately, I dialed the number. Les Brown’s voice came booming through my phone. Les was really fired up. He was going on a rant about pursuing your dreams NO MATTER WHAT! He was talking about all the struggles he’d faced while he was chasing his dream of becoming one of the greatest motivational speakers ever. Les went on and on about the hardships he had endured: From sleeping in janitor’s closets, to bathing in sinks. Les spoke candidly about his struggles. In the middle of the call Les Brown said something I’ll never forget. He said, “Once you stop fighting for what you want – what you don’t want will automatically take over.” That resonated deep within me. You see, I had such a rotten day Monday part of me wanted to quit. Part of me wanted to give up. The accounting error was massive. A lot hinged on the meeting that cancelled. Throwing in the towel seemed like a viable option. But Les Brown’s encouragement added fuel to a flame that nearly extinguished. Les breathed life into my dream. He convinced me to continue to fight. As the call was coming to a close, I sent Jonathan a message. I told him about the day I had, and thanked him for unknowingly coming to my rescue. When Les finished, the host asked, “Does anyone have questions for Les?” Lo and behold, my friend Jonathan’s voice came on the phone. Jonathan thanked Les for his inspiring talk. He told Les one of his first written down goals was to meet him in person. And then said he was able to achieve that goal last year. He reminded the legendary speaker who he was (Les immediately remembered Jonathan). Then Jonathan said, “I have a friend named Jeremy listening. He’s had a really difficult day. I know you inspired him to continue to fight for his dream, like you did for all of us on this call. I want to thank you for that.”

“You tell Jeremy that no matter what hapJonathan and Jeremy pened today, he’s closer than he thinks he is,” Les responded in his authoritative voice. Les continued, “Something great’s in store for him. How can I be so sure? Because Jeremy has greatness in him. Jonathan, you tell Jeremy he has greatness in him for me. Will you do that?” “I will Les,” Jonathan replied. Blown away that Les Brown, one of my personal hero’s spoke directly to me – my eyes welled up. I thought to myself how lucky I was to have a friend like Jonathan. The reason why I wanted to share this with you is because I cannot tell you how important it is to have positive people in your life. Jonathan’s the founder of PositivePin.com. He literally has positivity flowing through his veins. It’s rooted deep in his DNA. Many times our friends are not going to know the struggles we’re facing. Because more often than not, we keep them to ourselves. That’s why it’s critical to have people in our lives that believe in us. People that will share uplifting messages (or calls) with us out of the blue. I was so moved by my friend getting Les Brown to speak confidence into me, that on the way to an event Monday evening (I planned on not attending because I was down in the dumps) I pulled over and recorded this video (https://youtu.be/b7GOIY0ZDm8).

CLEAN…at the SPEED of LIFE Remember the days when your family would set aside an entire morning or afternoon to have everyone pitch in and clean the house… each and every week? Today, we are so connected with our family and friends through social media that “there is always something to do or somewhere to go.” We don’t want to miss anything! HomeWerks has a solution…Clean as you go at the “Speed of Life.” Imagine a scenario where the kids and their friends have finished watching movies and playing video games in your just finished, spotless Home Theater Room. Popcorn and snacks are strewn about – even between the sofa cushions! Wouldn’t it be convenient to just walk over to the wall and pull out a hose and start vacuuming instead of leaving the mess for the dreaded chore day? With a HomeWerks designed “Quick Clean” central vacuum system, there will be no more dragging out the vacuum or looking for the broom and dust pan! Everything you need to quickly clean your home is strategically placed throughout the home in an instant. Your very home can help you keep your home clean and healthy… conveniently! One of the most popular accessories is the Hide-A-Hose. No more grabbing and dragging a hose to where you want to clean. Strategically placed wall inlets allow you to pull out as much hose as you need – up to fifty feet! Once finished, the hose simply retracts back into the wall. Yes, simply. We offer many other Quick Clean solutions like the Vroom. When installed in the kitchen or master bath, everyday messes are a snap to clean – “as you go.” By just opening a cabinet door, you can reach in and pull out a hose to “Vroom” the dog food the new puppy keeps knocking over, the Cheerios the kids are always spilling and the “chip trail” someone leaves every night about midnight! HomeWerks can design your home to be a “Quick Clean Home” that “cleans at the speed of life” so instead of spending the entire day cleaning, the entire family can spend the day enjoying time together! Most people purchased their built-in Central Vacuum system because of four reasons: Power – more than five times the suction of a regular vacuum. With that kind of power combined with specialty attachments even the toughest dirt and pet hair is easily cleaned.

Filtration – If you have vowed to make your home a clean air home and have researched the best way to clean your home, you know that a central vacuum is the best answer! Many people justify the purchase of a system because there are no expensive filters or bags to buy. And, just because most of your home’s flooring is hard surface does not mean you do not need vacuum. A hard surface floor is conducive to a clean air home but not if you are going to dust mop or sweep the floors. Instead of whisking away the dirt and allergens into the power of unit located outside the living area, you sweep a little into your dust pan and a little over here and a little over there and a little into the air. You don’t even want to know what’s going on with dry mopping! Investment – It’s part of your home and a true asset that really does add value to your home’s bottom line. Convenience – It’s much easier to use than having to lug around a heavy upright or canister HomeWerks is designing systems with a “Quick Clean” concept of cleaning at the “Speed of Life” into every built-in central vacuum design. Imagine walking up to a wall inlet and pulling out as much hose as you need – up to 50 feet and super lightweight! No more dragging around long, heavy hoses! Now, that is convenience!!

The All American Dream….

Farmhouse, white picket fence, fresh country air, wide open spaces. Okay maybe not the white picket fence but living in the country was certainly a goal we had in mind. My husband and I built our dream farmhouse in the Hill Country with the intention of living a “slow paced” lifestyle. How quickly that all changed when I brought our business to life! We are such home bodies and I wanted our home to be a reflection of our style and comfort. During the design and building process, became really good at finding home décor items that looked great yet were affordable! The thrill was in the Hunt and I was a woman on a mission to make our house a home. My love and appreciation for vintage and antique furnishings began to blossom. I quickly became that girl that couldn’t wait to wake up early Saturday mornings in order to find some furniture treasures at local garage sales. With my husband driving and a truck full of goodies, I soon became a fan of loving older furniture pieces! I wasn’t keen on the idea of flat finished paint; I wanted our furniture to have character, to show the detail of these beautifully constructed vintage pieces. I found a chalk based paint that was unique in the sense of NO Prep work before painting. That meant no stripping, no sanding, no priming prior to painting…who doesn’t love that? Being a mom of 2, with a daughter in Nursing school and a busy High school teenage boy….a wife and a Registered Nurse, saving time was important in my quest to make everything beautiful. With a paint brush in one hand and my phone in the other, I took pictures of my completed work and shared them with friends and family on Facebook…..soon after our Burlap Junkies home décor business was born. Why the name Burlap Junkies? Well, I love burlap material and I used that specific material in my entire wreath making plus I became a creating “Junky” …it seemed fitting. With my new found passion, I felt the need to share my techniques with others who wanted to refinish to save money. Shortly our Farmhouse painting workshops were filling up quickly and we found ourselves hosting 10-22 people per class. Our classes pivoted into social events, mingling, sharing decorating ideas and painting tips became a monthly ritual. I was still missing something during my adventures in decorating and refinishing…..a paint line for our students and clients! I reached out to Annie Omar, founder of Maison Blanche Paint Company, she embraced my vision and quickly we became the only retailer in the San Antonio and surrounding areas. This beautiful Vintage Furniture Paint is a chalk based paint and with over 40 colors in their pallet, our customers have so many wonderful options to choose from. Our objective doesn’t stop there, we are creating and designing a farmhouse store within our community in order to offer our farmhouse inspired décor. Falling in love with older pieces of furniture is my intent, decorating with traditional furniture is becoming a thing of the past. The manufacture of vintage and antique furniture is unique and was well constructed to last for many years. We live by our motto of “Out with the new, in with the old” adding your personal style to older furnishings creates a custom appearance to your home décor. My husband and I collaborate to bring you individualized furnishings for your home. So if you’re looking to refresh your nest, contact Burlap Junkies for your home décor needs because turning your house into a home is our mission.

Much Love Lisa!

The Jetta is Volkswagen's most popular model, and for 2016 the sportiest version will again be the GLI. It is a larger and roomier alternative to the sporty little Golf GTI, sharing the same 2.0 liter engine. The Jetta is updated in several ways from 2015. While none of the changes are sweeping in nature, the appearance of the car is now sportier and more aggressive looking, which will be appreciated by those who were turned off by the sedate appearance of the car last year. At the nose, the GLI now sports the same red accent stripe as the GTI, and with the slightly changed air intake and fog lamps, the car looks lower, wider, and meaner. Gone is the chrome trim at the lower air intake, yielding a more intentionally sporty (less family sedan) look. However, the interior is actually bigger, so VW clearly had an eye toward improving comfort--the most significant thing the sportier hatchback GTI lacks--while increasing the sportiness of the GLI's appearance. There is added sportiness at the rear, as well, with a new mini-diffuser and a Yes-IMean-Business chrome tipped dual exhaust. If you liked the responsive performance of the little GTI, but you felt cramped in its tight interior, then the Jetta GLI may be the car for you. Along with added comfort, the interior boasts their latest touch-screen infotainment system, which facilitates communication between car and driver.

New this year is their Automatic Post-Collision Braking system. It might sound a little goofy, at first. The idea is that the air bag sensors send a signal to the braking system to hit the stoppers …after a collision is detected. Yes, it initiates after it senses a collision. But that isn't as goofy as if sounds. The premise is that a collision is rarely just one impact, but rather a series of events that commence with that initial impact. In theory, applying the brakes when a collision is detected reduces any residual damage that might occur. While I am not fully convinced, I am not going to start doubting German engineering. There are two primary upgrade options, the GLI SE, and GLI SEL. For creature comforts, the SE incorporates heated seats, a dual-zone climate control system, sunroof, premium audio system, and 6-way power driver's seat. For safety and control it offers rear view camera, front and rear "park distance control" and rain sensing windshield wipers. Also included in this impressively extensive package are an upholstery trim upgrade, keyless ignition, and Bluetooth. The GLI SEL adds on even more gadgets, including a navigation system, Blind Spot Detection with rear traffic alert, up-graded headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System, and a headlight-aiming system that swivels the beams up to 15 degrees linked to the positioning of the steering wheel. Tires are either a standard all-season radial, or a summer high-performance option. Transmission choices are manual or automatic, both with six speeds. The Jetta GLI has a prettier face that looks like she means business this year. The creature comforts are an added bonus. The car just debuted, but it may be available by the time this issue of San Antonio Monthly Magazine is published. Go check it out.

April Ancira, enjoying l Imagine, a day in the

life to the fullest! e life‌

As April enters her office, she diligently makes her way through the myriad of non-profits and organizations waiting to hear from her. Next, she turns her attention to the fans on Social Media. She always tries to take the time to engage. She is extremely passionate about the Ancira brand which shows through her hands on approach to push the brand with a strong viable reputation into 2020 and beyond. By mid-afternoon, April finds herself on an airplane heading to the Texas State Capital in Austin, TX to stand for this city and all of the dealerships within it. From there its back on the plane to San Antonio for a photo shoot; train for a triathlon (and not just any triathlon, the Ironman) and then it’s time to MC a social event. In between her busy work schedule she is cheering on a soccer game and enjoying a celebratory yogurt with her kids from the local yogurt shop. Q. April, when you’re faced with the day and the multitude of tasks ahead of you, from a morning meeting; to jumping on a plane for a meeting in Austin; then back to San Antonio for a photo shoot; to attending a charity dinner (or a date night) being a Mommy and fitness training in between … where do you find the energy?? What’s your secret? A. Well, I have caffeine. Joking aside it really boils down to mental endurance. Something I like to do is run marathons and train for Ironman. At around mile 20 the marathoners call that “The Wall” and at the wall your legs are not what gets you through to the finish line, it’s your heart and mind. I’ll tell you that at times when I have run marathons and hit that wall, I am so done. But how can you run 20 miles and not go the last 6? So you just go, you just do it. And although at times I am exhausted, I love it! I love that there is never monotony. The fact that there is always a change of pace, keeps me invigorated. And sometimes, you have to fit things in where you can. For example later today I have a pedicure appointment, but while the pedicurist is working on my pedicure, I’m with my laptop on my lap answering e-mail after e-mail. Also, due to the fact that ours is a family business I’m able to include my kids. So, if I’m doing a commercial and they’re involved, we always make it a fun time being together (although, my son insists on getting paid in Ninja Turtle toys). I also love that I get to see my Dad and husband all the time. I really am enjoying life and having fun, both of which are great energy boosters! One of April’s best attributes is always seeing the lighter quirky side of life. She is extremely funny and without ego keeping herself accessible to her staff and her calendar. Behind all that the public sees, is an extremely humble woman who champions giving and lifting up San Antonio.

Q. One of your strong attributes is the ability to always see the positive side of things, regardless of the situation. How do you maintain such a positive attitude? A. My oldest sister died of cancer when I was 9 and after that my Dad really instilled a “live life like it’s your last day on earth,” philosophy in me. Since then I have lost a grandfather another sister and most recently my grandmother to ALS on Father’s Day. Everything else in life is just part of the crazy adventure we are all on. Even right after my grandmother passed, I held my grandfather and said, “You know she just had to get to heaven first so she can have your golf clubs ready for when you get there to kick you out the door all over again.” He laughed for a good few minutes after. I live to make people laugh and smile. There is no better “high” I get out of life. Through tireless dedication of her time and corporate philanthropy, April spearheads many different causes that are near and dear to her heart. For example, she strives to deliver open access to our parks and public pools, for everyone to enjoy. She dedicates time to the Brighton Center so that she can impact the lives of children who deserve love, joy and the best start in life that is possible. She understands the importance of giving back which denotes her involvement with the United Way, Eastside Promise, Salvation Army, Alamo Community Group, Family Services Association, Texas ALS Association, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The San Antonio Food Bank, The Tour de Cure of the American Diabetes Association, San Antonio Sports Association, San Antonio Zoo, and many more. Q. As the Vice President over 13 dealerships with close to 800 employees. What is it like being such a successful and powerful woman in an industry that is typically male dominated? A. I like this question. To give a quick back story, my Dad started in 1972. General Motors was looking for a Hispanic dealer because they didn’t really have one operating a Chevy store in the United States. So when he placed the application, he sold everything that he had, negotiated a buy/sell agreement - he was the only one who did this. He went from the bottom of well over 100 applicants to the top. He was successful and was the first Hispanic Chevy Dealership owner in the United States. After that, he had grown up primarily in Mexico, people said “Geez, how did you do it? How did you do this as a minority? How did you overcome all of the barriers?” At that time in San Antonio the Hispanic population wasn’t anything close to what it is now. His answer was “I grew up in Mexico, nobody told me I was Hispanic there in Mexico, so I didn’t really realize that there were any barriers here. So maybe the problem is that people classify themselves and already put themselves at a disadvantage. I just went with it and did everything I could to get the store.” So, with that in mind, I started working answering phones and filing at 16. I said “Dad, I’d like a summer job” and he said “Okay” and he put me in and I did it. I did the same thing at 17, worked in Accounting at 18, sold cars at 21, did service at 22, waited tables at Chili’s for one year because I wanted a better paycheck. However in the same fashion as my Dad, my outlook was the same, I just did it. I didn’t think about the fact that I am a woman. Nobody told me that as a woman I might face barriers or challenges. I was also young when I entered into the industry, so as a young woman, people may not listen to you … nobody said any of that to me. So I just went for it! And did what I needed to do, so I’ve never found that to be an issue or something I’ve had to overcome. I was just myself and did what I felt was best for everybody in the business as a whole.

However saying that and taking into consideration where I am, I believe I am lucky and it is a unique position because clearly there are women out there who have broken the barriers for me, previously. It was these other women who did the pioneering in the business world, fighting their way up that probably made it easier for me to just coast on in here and do what I needed to do. And even when I traveled outside of San Antonio and interacted with other organizations, I’ve noticed there are now many more female owners. But when I interact or talk with all of the male counterparts out there, there’s never been a problem, I can hang with them and there’s never been judgement or they have never looked down upon me or thought that I was incapable of something. So frankly, I’ve just never really had that as a challenge. The drive, imagination and creative outlook of April Ancira is launching the Ancira brand into areas no other auto retailers have dared to go! She is creating extremely smart connections by bringing the brand to the people. As April said “Taking the brand to places where people already want to be.” For example, you’ll find the Ancira brand as a sponsor of the Alamo City Comic Con … the place of superheroes, fantasy, and imagination, amplified. They are modifying vehicles to speak to local college teams, popular movies, and super hero themes. Ancira has even done vehicles for the San Antonio Spurs and the San Antonio Zoo. In fact, they not only partner with a local car club, but are actually IN the car club, drag racing, and doing road trips and everything that comes with the love of cars. And in true April spirit, she rarely takes credit, but would rather give credit and exposure of the work to her business partners. Q. A. So April, I just have to ask … You always look amazing, whether you’re casual in jeans with your hair thrown up in a ponytail or all decked out in a beautiful dress. What’s your favorite style to wear? When do you feel the most beautiful? A. I think I have two ‘beautifuls’ that I like. I’m a big fan of wearing cute workout clothes, hair in a ponytail and natural makeup when I’m running around doing errands. I’m definitely most comfortable in this look. I’m also comfortable in the glamorous look but I guess I feel attractive in the glamorous look and pretty in the more natural look. As much as I like the glamorous look, of course it’s not as comfortable because you’re in those heels, wearing that dress, possibly in those spanx! In the workout clothes you can look good, naturally. It’s a comfy pretty.

Q. With everything that you do, when you finally have some downtime, what is your favorite thing to do in your YOU time? A. Although many wouldn’t consider this ‘downtime’ for me one of the things I enjoy doing is training, but I also love reading, and I love catching up on shows like Shark Week. I’ll share a funny story … lately I’ve been extra busy so I’ve been bringing my IPad into the shower with me and catching up on Shark Week while I’m letting the conditioner sit in my hair! And then I get questions from my husband “Why is the IPad in the shower??” and I’ll answer “because I’m behind on Shark Week!” I also try to pursue new challenges if I have free time. Right now it’s Ironman. In the past I’ve done Stand-Up Comedy, I have my Pilot’s License and my newest challenge is to take on singing the National Anthem at a Spurs game. Me: Wow! That’s brave. April: I love to do things that may seem scary and push the comfort zone. Yes, I love the challenge! At the end of the day, April walks boldly and unafraid, excited about what the future will bring!

Bar of the Month

When walking down to 1919, you’re immediately confronted with thoughts of intrigue, mystery and wonderment. Upon entering the dimly lit underground oasis, you’re taken back to 1919, “The last great drinking year of the United States.”(Don Marsh, owner) The first anecdote to sensing the personality of this libation hideaway is the “Bar Rules.” It’s a great read, and laugh for the patrons, but jokes aside, it’s a tone setting notion to the lack of tomfoolery tolerated at this establishment. Don Marsh, owner, and mixologist, makes 1919 a diamond in the rough. He started in 1990 but really made a name for himself in 2003. As beverage coordinator at Watermark and Pesca, at La Mansion Hotel, he brought the lost art of creating classic cocktails to San Antonio. Since then, he has been an influential medium for bartenders and bar owners across San Antonio. Now, finally owning his own cocktail, and whisky mecca, Don can exercise the classic preparation of drink recipes that embodied a time of “self”. 1919 uses classic methods of time-honored tradition in each unique taste-forward cocktail. Honestly, calling these concoctions a cocktail is taking credit away from the overall result. With over 300 whiskies, and 150 gins and tequilas, the skilled barkeeps swizzle into action each day to create not only drinks, but memories. Each bartender at 1919 was hand picked by Don himself. Then trained by him, so each drink has Dons personal touch. He also holds meetings every Friday to maintain timing, techniques, and mechanics to ensure the utmost efficiency without losing craftsmanship. As any “speakeasy” would, there is a secret lingering behind the bar. A secret tasting room which hosts a reservation only opportunity to taste different spirits, beers, and pairings to compliment. Many times the tastings feature very rare and unique spirits, which are well worth the occasional price to match. However, Don Marsh gives people the chance to try something new and exciting every third Tuesday of the month. Patrons can also try popular handcrafted libations, along with food Monday through Friday from 4 o’clock to 7 o’clock during happy hour. A great excuse to sample what 1919 has to offer at a reduced price. You’ll keep coming back for the ambiance, and the overall fulfillment of getting exactly what you pay for. Business Functions, Fellows and Friends From Abroad San Antonio Hosts Young African Leaders By: Charities Editor, Desiree H. Serna, C.N.P., M.P.A.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders began in 2014. This flagship program of President Obama’s, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The Fellowship provides outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home. In the summer of 2015, San Antonio had the distinguished honor of hosting 25 Mandela Washington Fellows representing 20 nations. The San Antonio tour provided the opportunity for professional development opportunities by providing participants access to experiential learning experiences. Social entrepreneur, community activist and Black Business advocate, Christopher C. Herring, worked with many prestigious San Antonio and Bexar County agencies, community organizations and nonprofits in preparation to receive and the Fellows - representing 20 nations. The impressive San Antonio tailed professional development series included presentations by leaders of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s College of Business, CPS Energy, SA’s Women’s Business Panel, Brooks City Base, Star Complex, Café Commerce and Bexar County SMWBE/ DBE Program. The San Antonio developmental series included topics of gender egalitarianism, insights about the nation’s largest municipally owned gas and electric utility, and San Antonio real estate seminar. Herring appreciates the connection and commonalities with Africa and its Mandela Fellows. “I learned through firsthand experience working with Black businesses in the State, that we have to continue to educate and inform the masses to make changes in how we think.” Herring says. “What really changed my mind about Africa and her people was the warm human interaction between myself and the Mandela Fellows which indicated we have far more in common than we have in differences.” Herring commented. “It is always difficult to say goodbye... but in this case we are saying hello to the opportunities ahead. I want to thank my family and very good friends for supporting the effort by freely giving of your time, talent and treasure!” says Herring. San Antonio will be hosting the Mandela Washington Fellows for the third year in the Summer of 2016.

Nonprofits Survival Tactics

By: Charities Editor, Desiree H. Serna, CNP, MPA

As we enter an era of budget cuts and expectations of lean efficiency we see nonprofits making some innovative changes. Contemporary nonprofits are now engaging in social entrepreneurship and social enterprise initiatives with avant-garde resourcefulness that innovatively attract consumption and (more importantly) support. In this spirit, let’s put to rest three false assumptions about nonprofits. Myth #1—Nonprofits don’t make money or revenue? False. A nonprofit does not exist for the purpose of making profits for shareholders, but instead uses its profits for the benefit of the organization. While a nonprofit may yield a profit, by law it must retain and spend profits for the benefit of accomplishing the goals set by the nonprofit's bylaws. Total revenue for organizations in the 2014 Nonprofit Times Top 100 totaled approximately $74.7 billion. Myth #2—Nonprofits get most of their funding from donors and fundraisers. False. Today’s nonprofits have been genetically mutated to closely resemble many revenue and efficiency processes as its business and government counterparts. We see many nonprofits engaging in programs which generate income, social ventures while addressing social, education and charitable needs. Most importantly, nonprofits are thinking outside of the box, yet inside their mission. Myth #3—Nonprofits do not have a seat at the P3 (public-private partnership) table. False. Our social and environmental issues surpassed the capacity of one sector’s ability decades ago. The issues we are dealing with today coupled with limited resources available--along with efficiency and efficacy expectations--require collaborative efforts across the government, business and nonprofit sectors. While these partnerships are complex in nature, nonprofits play a prominent role in P3 endeavors.

MARIA CYR

It is with great pride, honor, and gratitude for me to remember the contribution and work of Maria Cyr for Santo Nino Parish. During my term as pastor of Santo Nino Church, Maria worked tremendously to find resources for the Parish. The Parish just had just started. We practically had nothing except our faith in God and few good people. Maria Cyr was one of the few who through her resources and talents, the community started to grow and multiply. Her skill of recruiting the right people and working with a team is a short of miracle. We believed and were transformed by our belief in God and in each other. She planted the seed of hope and possibilities in the community. Maria Cyr was the Finance Council Chairperson of the Parish from 2001 – 2003. As a chairperson, she was responsible in raising funds and creating parish yearly budget. We did not only survive, we grew beyond what we thought we could not accomplish in such a short time. The community hall, the parking lot, the church extension, cry room, and sacristy were built in those years. Maria Cyr’s leadership was visible and creative. I truly thought the projects would not be fulfilled without her. Her presence stood out. This is not to mention her personal contribution in dollar terms; I believed was considerable as well. But above all, her good heart and civic-minded personality that inspired grateful members of the church. Her example of generosity, sacrifice, and kindness will be a legacy to emulate by those who live the faith and build communities.

Aida’s Army

Aida was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on October 8, 2013. When she started treatment at Methodist Children’s Hospital on October 9, 2013; she was not able to go back to school to finish Kindergarten with her sister and her class, she was homebound taught by her teacher. We are happy to report that this year she was allowed to return to school for first grade and she completed it with flying colors and on target if not above average in all subjects. This year she also participated in gymnastics while her sister played soccer. Aida was sure not to miss a soccer game, either. She is doing all the things that every 7-year-old little girl should do. She loves to play with her friends, ride her scooter, go to the park, and go swimming. She loves the ocean and the beach. She plays with her dog, Sadie. She loves camping with her daddy, shopping, and chick fil a with her mommy. She continues with monthly clinic visits and the occasional visit to a specialist. She will continue to get treatment for another 40 weeks. Her treatment includes a chemotherapy pill daily, another type of chemo pill once a week, high dose chemo in her spine every 56 days, and every 16 she gets 2 rounds of another type of chemo, that often has the most side effects; and a week of steroids. If by our calculations, she should finish treatment right around their 8th birthday. I know that there will be something special for that time. We thank you for your continued support and prayers.

How to Own Real Estate: What Are Your Options? Whether you are in the market to purchase or currently hold real estate, it is important to consider the title in which you register your property. Often, real estate is your most valuable asset, and without careful evaluation of your options, you can potentially lose control. Below are five ways title can be held and their implications.

1. Individual Name: This is when you hold the title to real estate in just your name regardless if you are married. Some drawbacks can occur with this option should you become mentally or physically disabled and unable to manage your estate. A will cannot assist you if you become incapacitated, and when you die, the real estate will end up in the probate court system before your beneficiaries can change title.

2. Community Property: Texas is one of nine states that allow married couples to hold property in both names as community property. In community property states, when you pass away, the surviving spouse will get the real estate, unless you specify otherwise in your estate plan (will or trust). There are exceptions to this under Texas law, as a surviving spouse has the right to occupy the homestead property for the rest of his/her life. The problem with community property is that each spouse can dictate in their individual estate plan who will inherit their portion of the real estate. This could lead to multiple co-owners and losing full control over your real estate, or the surviving spouse leaving the real estate to his/her new spouse!

3. Revocable Living Trust: A Revocable Living Trust allows for your real estate to be held in the name of the Trustee of your trust. As the Trustmaker, you retain full control and can make changes to the trust instructions as long as you are alive. You and your spouse can serve as Trustees, in addition to other Co-trustees. You can buy, sell and refinance the real estate as you wish. Within your Revocable Living Trust, you will name a Successor Trustee that will manage your real estate without court interference if you become incapacitated. The Successor Trustee is legally obligated to follow the explicit instructions in the Revocable Living Trust that you dictated, ensuring your real estate is handled the way you intended. At death, the real state will pass according to your trust instructions without having to go through probate court. This allows for an expedited estate administration and a higher degree of privacy, since probate court records are public record.

4. Irrevocable Trusts: If you wish to gift real estate while you are still alive, or create a trusts that can hold real estate for asset protection purposes, an Irrevocable Trust should be considered. An Irrevocable Trust is a trust that once created, cannot be changed (with certain exceptions). Under Texas law, the Trustmaker generally cannot be the beneficiary, unlike a Revocable Living Trust; however, this feature makes the Irrevocable Trust asset protected against creditors. If the indented beneficiaries are minors or disabled, holding title to real estate in an Irrevocable Trust allows for the trustee that you select to administer the real estate for the benefit of the minor or disabled person. Gifting real estate with Irrevocable Trusts should also be considered for adult children, safeguarding the property against your children’s creditors, divorces, substance abuse or immaturity issues.

5. Limited Liability Company (LLC) or Limited Partnership (LP). Holding title to real estate with an LLC or LP should also be considered, especially if the real estate is commercial property. The LLC or LP in turn can be owned by you, your trust, or another LLC or LP that you control. Real Estate titled in an LLC or LP creates a high degree of asset protection. The LLC or LP can be designed to align with your current estate plan, maintaining control in case you are disabled, and leaving instructions once you pass away. As you can see, there are many issues to consider when holding title to real estate. You should always consult an experienced attorney on how to title your real estate and explore which option is best for your needs. Latina Filmmakers Making a Difference! by Katherine Cornett

Latinas have been breaking through the doors of show business starting from Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria to Michelle Rodriguez and Dany Garcia. As a whole these women have opened doors for the up and coming Latina Producers and Filmmakers of today’s younger generation. San Antonio local, Janell Vela Smith, who is a long time member of NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) recently visited Hollywood attending the Mega Media Summit which was sponsored by NALIP. She even produced a short film called Zorro Girl, and was selected by NALIP as there “Official Selection” and screened in Hollywood at the Egyptian Theater. The short film is a promo for a “series” that she and her fellow Latina Producer, Patricia Vonne and Director Teresa Jolie collaborated on. Their goal is to create a positive role model for young Latina girls, teaching them to be strong and independent women. The filmmakers of Zorro Girl are reaching out to sponsors and anyone interested in investing in the series in hopes of starting production for the show soon. Smith also has a full plate with her latest venture in Entertainment through her VOD channel. In the world of film and TV, streaming content has become increasingly ubiquitous. Streaming companies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon are successfully moving from being providers of content to content creators. Streaming has provided a different format with all its own rules, and we’ve yet to see where it’s going or what will happen next. For Janell Smith, who also is an owner of Iron Dragon Studios, this step forward in the industry has opened many doors, including a recent partnership with NanoTech Entertainment to create the Iron Dragon TV Channel. Iron Dragon TV will be the first and only 4K, or ultra high-definition, martial arts channel available anywhere. What this partnership means is that when you buy a Samsung or Sony 4K Ultra HD television, your TV will come preloaded with an app called UltraFlix ™, where you can find Iron Dragon TV. You can also access it from Roku or your Android device. Smith, who is also a fourth degree black belt in Tukong martial arts, a fitness instructor, a kickboxing instructor and is working on writing her own film script. She knows her stuff. She partners with different companies to license the content shown on the channel. Some of the classic content on the channel include the film series Shaolin, IP Man, and The King of the Fighters, as well as Jackie Chan movies. Partnering with Well Go USA, Iron Dragon TV will also offer current martial arts content, while partnering with Crash Media to provide the old school Kung Fu content. As well as using classic shows and old movies, Smith is also coming up with her own original content. “It’s all happening really fast, Samsung is huge, so I’m really excited to see our Iron Dragon TV on all these new channels, and that everyone can watch all these action flicks,” Smith states. “And once you see it in 4K, you won’t want to watch it any other way.” Having worked on films in the past, Smith says that the major difference she feels in producing a streaming channel is on the business side. While we might not notice when we just watch the content, there is a large amount of work that goes into the process of creating one of these channels, starting from licensing to content creation. Instead of just producing (which is a lot of work in itself), she now also has the responsibility of working with other companies to license their

content and convert it to the 4K format. She’s had a learning curve during this experience, but says that she’s gotten good feedback and is proud of the channel’s content. These changes in the industry also bring with them new ideas for promotion that are exciting and, well, cool. Throughout the year, the Violet Crown Theater holds screenings for Iron Dragon TV, while simultaneously premiering the same film on Iron Dragon TV. In the end, the film business is like any other business, so Smith’s background in this subject helps her keep everything on track. She also considers herself a creative, and rare woman who is an almost unstoppable combination in the film industry. She credits staying active, in mind and body, which gives her all the energy she needs to run her own business. While she hasn’t been teaching martial arts classes lately because of the time commitment, she still teaches kickboxing to help her stay mobile. Even though she schedules herself regular working hours during the day, owning your own business is really a 24/7 job. Especially when promotional events require a lot of networking, time and energy to put together. “You have to be the full package in this business, leading the way and having the energy,” she proclaims. “Producing is the most difficult job I’ve ever done but the most rewarding.” Working on the channel has given Smith freedom in the development process as long as it is in the context of 4K and martial arts. Smith brings her ideas to Samsung and Sony who provides the funding, and they go back and forth on what goes on the channel. “I really think cable is going to obsolete soon, because now you can just buy these TVs and you have all this content on there. You don’t even have to worry about plugging in any cables or anything,” she says. “And Roku is just a thing you plug into your computer.” Even with everything on her plate, Smith still has some bigger dreams she wants to follow, including producing and directing her own action film and finishing up work on her first book titled “Awakening the Dragon Within” a motivational book with emphasis on mind, body and spirit. In addition to working on developing Zorro Girl for TV, she also is currently in development on another scripted series for TV or VOD called Zone of Silence and a Feature Film called SCENE QUEEN currently in post production. Lastly on her busy plate is the Launch of The Iron Dragon TV Action Fest! Breaking Down Barriers There aren’t many, if any, female martial arts directors, but being the only woman in the room isn’t new to Smith. At her last official martial arts teaching in China last year, she had 130 students and was one of four instructors, all of whom were from West Point and male. So she’s used to representing the famous hashtag ‘likeagirl.' “In a male dominated arena, I forget that I’m a female. It’s such a man’s world, everything that I do, producing and martial arts, I’m used to being the only female in the room.” she said. In the works for original content for the channel include a new show starring Tim Kennedy, and a show starring Rudy Reyes. Tim Kennedy is a professional mixed martial artist, and Rudy Reyes starred in the HBO series Generation Kill. The big idea Smith is most excited about is the Iron Dragon Action Fest, a film fest that would include content from bigger companies as well as some action films that might not be well known. The film fest would help bring them attention and also highlight new video games.
