ON THE COVER

“Driven for success”

Ben Brunton, Co-Founder of Prestige Motorsports In San Antonio How did you get started in this business? Since I was a child, I have had a huge passion for vehicles cars and motorsports. I saw a need in Texas and, frankly, nationally and globally with people like myself who have a car collection and want to ensure it is serviced well. But also that the collection is shown and showcased and brings together like-minded people with a sort of membership — like a country club but with a specific shared passion in mind. Thus, I wanted to have a storage and service facility to really enjoy my own cars, and the idea of Prestige Motorsports was

born. My business partner and I are working with our Prestige team to make this vision come to life in San Antonio and seek to create more Prestige businesses around the country and the globe.

What is your background? Education, Work Experience I started with a strong work ethic as a professional athlete. I am a two-time world champion in clay target shooting, otherwise known as sporting clays. I did that for a long time and was on the professional tour for

about 20 years. I started at 15 and made the British shooting team as a senior when I was a junior. It took a lot of work, dedication, and passion. After that, I decided to get into a network marketing company selling healthcare products that at the time was called Genius’s Pure, and built a team of about 10,000 people. That experience segwayed me into healthcare and got me into the healthcare spaces and ancillaries. I then started a healthcare business, Legent Healthcare, by acquiring one hospital, and we currently have 15 locations. Prestige Motorsports, Edward Anthony Estates, and our vineyard in Napa, Chateau De Vi, are part of the lifestyle brands I co-founded.

What is your management style? I certainly expect results, but at the same time, I see my team and those who work around us as people and have an understanding of who they are and of their capabilities. I think you really have to know your team, empower their best qualities and be kind to get the best results.

Why is it important to you personally to succeed? I believe it takes hard work and a lot of passion to succeed. Without either of those, you simply cannot be successful at what you do, especially the passion part. I truly feel like I never work a day in my life.

What do you see the future holds for your type of business? As far as Prestige Motorsports is concerned, we seek to expand our offerings for our members, we want people in San Antonio to know we are a dealership, service center, storage facility and social club all in one, there is truly nothing like it. We also seek to continue to give back, giving back to the community is huge for us, too. We also seek to expand in Texas, Florida, and nationally, as well as internationally.

Is there anything in particular you’re looking to accomplish with your career? I would like to take Prestige Motorsports worldwide, starting in Texas and Florida and then expanding overseas. From there, the possibilities are endless!

Do you know who your competitors are? Our competitors are one-dimensional; they are either a dealership or a country club. That’s what makes Prestige so unique: we combine the social aspect of a country club with the service of a dealership and the ability to store and showcase these cars. It’s a market that’s virtually untapped.

How are people aware of your business? We have an incredible team getting the word out, not only our marketing and PR team but also our memberships and events team as well. We’re focused on showing our commitment to customized services and customer services. Follow us on Instagram!

Do you plan to compete in the global marketplace? If yes, how? If no, why not? lobal expansion. We will be working with various global partners within the next year and securing locations and announcements.

Can you describe your customers? The ideal customers for Prestige Motorsports are like-minded car enthusiasts who can appreciate the finer things in life. Exclusivity is what they are looking for and what we provide, as well as a community with our members.

What is the most satisfying quality about your job? That it doesn’t seem like a job! I love what I do every day, and it is never a job to me; it’s a passion. And in life, if your job is a passion, you will never work a day.

What would you say are your greatest challenges, and have you overcome them? Specific to Prestige Motorsports, it’s teaching people who and what we are and creating excitement in the community to get to know us. There have been various challenges that we’ve overcome, but getting a dealer’s license has been the greatest challenge.

Who has been your greatest inspiration? All my inspiration for Prestige Motorsports came from Formula 1 racing and from watching that as a kid. Formula 1 went from a small sport to where they are now as an international powerhouse. They have done it correctly, and watching that has been a strong motivation regarding what we want to achieve with Prestige.

What would you like your business legacy to be? I would like to leave a legacy of what we have built with Prestige and open up opportunities for community, partnership, and connections with shared vision and passions—leaving a place where people connect and memories for others to remember. And also, that hard work, passion, and vision really do pay off!

business landscape and pivot to meet changing market conditions.

Will 2024 be a Happy New Year? I present this article as a 30-year veteran in the marketing world having created advertising campaigns for more than 1,500 clients. My experience tells me that if this year turns out to be anything like 2023, we are looking at some economic headwinds that include high interest rates, consumers with less discretionary income, continued high prices, wars causing market instability, and a controversial presidential election just to name a few challenges we face. As business owners, we should be looking back on 2023 to identify those business strategies that worked for us, increased revenue, attracted new clients, and helped us run effective enterprises. And, we should do MORE of those things in 2024. We can also easily identify things we did that DIDN’T work in our businesses and eliminate those where possible. The name of the success game in 2024 is doing more of what works and less of what doesn’t. When the economy contracts, we have to be more efficient. We can’t afford to waste precious resources as is often the case when the economy is booming and our businesses are doing great. The small business leaders who will be a force to be reckoned with are the ones who can navigate the complexities of the

One notable trend among successful small business owners in 2023, and continuing into 2024, is an increased focus on digital transformation. Recognizing the importance of an online presence, entrepreneurs are investing in redesigning company websites, improving search engine optimization, and upgrading online listings to create greater opportunities and exposure to new audiences. This shift not only broadens their customer reach but also provides a more adaptable and responsive business model. Digital marketing is much more nimble and affordable than more traditional forms of advertising such as video or print. Another strategy to consider is collaboration with strategic alliances. Working with ideal referral partners can prove to be a key driver for success among small businesses. Networking to achieve synergy enables owners to pool resources, share insights, and collectively tackle challenges. There is strength in unity. Adaptability is one of my favorite entrepreneurial superpowers. A trait that just might make 2024 a more profitable year. Agility allows a business owner to stay relevant and responsive, while helping ensure sustainability in a dynamic market. The new year is just starting. Forget merely weathering the economic challenges of 2024; instead actively embrace change, leverage technology, foster collaboration, and adapt quickly. Do MORE In ‘24.

Identify Your Beliefs About Money

The first step in understanding your money mindset is identifying your beliefs about money. Consider your upbringing and the messages you received about money growing up. Were you taught that money was scarce and hard to come by or that it was abundant and easy to earn? These beliefs can shape your attitudes towards money as an adult. Take some time to reflect on your thoughts about money and how they may impact your financial decisions.

Examine Your Spending Habits

Your spending habits can also give you insight into your money mindset. Are you a compulsive spender, or do you tend to save more than you spend? Do you feel guilty about spending money or deserve to treat yourself? Examining your spending habits can help you understand your underlying beliefs about money.

Consider Your Relationship With Money

Your relationship with money can also be essential to understanding your money mindset. Do you see money as a tool to achieve your goals and dreams or as a source of stress and anxiety? Do you feel like you have control over your finances, or do you feel like your finances control you? By gaining a new understanding your relationship with money can help you identify areas for improvement.

Challenge Negative Thoughts About Money

If you have negative thoughts about money, such as “I’ll never be able to save enough” or “Money is the root of all evil,” it’s essential to challenge those thoughts. Negative beliefs about money can hold you

back and prevent you from achieving your financial goals. Reframe those negative ideas into more positive ones, such as “I can save a little bit each month” or “Money can be a tool for good when used wisely.”

Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude can also be a powerful tool for improving your money mindset. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, focus on what you do have and be grateful for it. This can help you shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance, which can significantly impact your financial decisions.

Educate Yourself About Money

Educating yourself about money and personal finance can also help improve your money mindset. The more you understand money and how it works, the more confident you will feel about making financial decisions. Many great resources, such as books, podcasts, and online courses, can help you improve your financial literacy.

Seek Professional Help

If you need help understanding your money mindset or to make positive changes to your financial situation, seek professional help. A financial planner or coach can help you identify areas for improvement and develop a plan to achieve your financial goals. Improving your money mindset takes time and effort but can significantly impact your financial well-being. By identifying your beliefs about money, examining your spending habits, and challenging negative thoughts, you can begin to make positive changes to your financial situation. Remember to practice gratitude, educate yourself about money, and seek professional help.

Brooke Eastland Model of the Month

I started pursuing this industry when I joined a modeling club in college. We would practice our walk and posing and that’s when I fell in love with it. I would even get my mom to go out and shoot with me just so I could get practice in front of the camera and different locations. Iv’e done countless photo shoots since, but feel like just getting in front of the camera is the most important so you can learn what works

or doesn’t. Doing weekly classes with my mother agent, Lari Nelson, has kept my skills sharp and has opened many doors in this market. My future goals are to keep working with great photographers and stylists while having fun and continuing to pursue this as a career. I hope to one day be able to travel for a modeling job and be on a cover of a magazine.

The power of the mind, fulfilling your desires! Thoughts are cognitive processes which contain an incredible capacity to influence our lives, since it is mainly on them that we depend on to explain how we feel and how we act. Our thoughts are very powerful, if we visualize something, if we truly believe it, it will come true. A well-known phrase goes, “You have believed it, you have created it.” We attract everything around us with our energy. Positive thoughts help fight stress, negative thoughts are a silent killer that sickens, ages, and kills. They are also useful in combating pain and diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. They also strengthen the immune system, ward off depression and keep anxiety under control. Both words and thoughts can be powerful in their own way. Thoughts are the internal mental processes that shape our perceptions, emotions, and actions. They can drive our beliefs, attitudes, and choices.

Words, on the other hand, are the outward expression of our thoughts and can have a profound impact on others. What if I write what I think? Benefits of Therapeutic Writing Writing can help us unlock some emotions associated with our thoughts, make our goals and desires clearer, or help us understand situations that cause us problems with others. Writing down your deepest desires on a list of manifestations is one of the easiest ways to use the Law of Attraction. You can manifest everything you desire, from wealth to love to prosperity, simply by writing your dreams down on a piece of paper. There are many benefits to having a written report of what you most want to attract into your life. We wish that this 2024 your written wishes come true !! At MedNatura we help you regain your health and well-being! With #frecuenciasrife

As 2023 came to an end, I was blessed to welcome in 2024 with my family and friends. May 2024, open up your heart and your minds to being kind and courteous to others. Allow yourself to make subtle changes from within, as we are all a work in progress. For those that experienced loss & heartache

in 2023, please realize your past and your ability to persevere & survive your misfortunes has enabled you to grow as a person, as well as shape your present day, guiding your on your future journey. The Scharf family wishes all of San Antonio a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

to routinely be seen and be monitored for not only their physical health, but their mental health as well, as they navigate life changes. Some of those steps, besides establishing primary care, would be to discuss changes in mood and energy level, as well as major life events. A primary care physician can provide medication management, or referrals to other disciplines like psychiatry. Psychotherapy is a very healthy option for a variety of mental health and life transition concerns.

New Years, New Mental Health With the new year, people are excitedly announcing their new year’s resolutions. People are running to get their gym memberships in droves, to transform their body. People are subscribing to the “New Year, New You” to improve and attain their peak physical shape. The quest for physical self improvement is one that has been echoed throughout the decades as people hit the weights to make improvements. What people do not often think about when it comes to obtaining peak health is the state of their mental health. In an effort to make resolutions, people are often concerned about what they see in the mirror. What people do not often think about is new year’s resolutions to improve their mental health. The truth is, someone can have all of the physical health they want, but if they do not have a healthy mental health situation, then everything else will fall to the wayside. It is important for people to have an established primary care physician

Part of the conversation that needs to happen is an honest look inward and admitting that it is okay to say when we need help. It is also “okay to not be okay,” but with the proper support in place, one can make their mental health improvement a realistic and tangible goal to work on. But what can we do in the meantime? We can do the following: -Set up a PCP -Look to see if your provider has behavioral health benefits such as psychiatry and psychotherapy, through an Employee Assistance Program or another application such as a teleheatlh site option. -Get proper sleep; about 8 hours a night (this is very important) -Decrease intake of sugars and junk food, as well as other empty calorie resources -set up work hour boundaries; once you clock out of work, you are off for the day. -Learn to say “no” and to not overcommit or extend yourself; using boundaries. In short, when you sign up for your gym membership and hit the weights, do not forget to also make your mental health a resolution too. Dr. Potthast

MINDSET - LIFESTYLE 2024 Last year I wrote about Reflect – Review – Restart which would help set your goals daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. MINDSET; a fixed attitude, disposition, or mood. LIFESTYLE; the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group. First thing change your mindset and prioritize to change your lifestyle. As for myself, my health and fitness are my number one priority which should be everyone’s priority. As I always say; Your Health is Your Wealth!! Make time for exercise or make time for disease!! You are your most valuable asset. Your health is everything without it, you can’t continue to be productive. You will end up spending your money on medical bills and pills. Then you will spend your money hiring someone like myself to guide you back to health and wellness. You are your most valuable asset. When you invest in your health, you invest in yourself. Set attainable realistic short term goals and long term goals in every area of your life especially your nutritional and fitness goals. It’s like climbing a latter you take one step at a time instead of trying to leap to the top. The faster you climb the faster you fall and fail. Be patient with yourself and don’t beat yourself up if you stumble along the way just get right back up and keep moving forward. Just don’t stop. Develop your discipline. Before you know it, it starts to become a lifestyle which will be easier to maintain. Make a list the night before making it for the most important to the least and go from there daily. If you don’t get them all done

then carry it over to the next day with the new list for that day. At the end of the month compare it to your monthly goal. Value yourself and take care of you first so you can be there for others. If you are not healthy how can you service others? Reset your mind “MINDSET” – Review – Reflect – Restart. Ready set go!! In the ever-evolving landscape of real estate, 2024 stands out as a promising year for those contemplating the decision to purchase a home. The myriad benefits that accompany home ownership make it an opportune time for individuals and families to take the plunge into the real estate market. From financial advantages to the intangible joys of owning a place to call one’s own, here’s a closer look at why 2024 may be the ideal moment to invest in a home.

1. Favorable Interest Rates:

One of the most compelling reasons to consider buying a home in 2024 is the current trend of favorable interest rates. As central banks strive to stabilize economies and foster growth, mortgage rates remain at historically low levels. This not only makes homeownership more accessible but also translates to significant long-term savings for buyers. Low-interest rates can result in lower monthly mortgage payments, allowing homeowners to allocate their resources more efficiently.

2. Investment and Appreciation:

Real estate has long been considered a sound investment, and 2024 is no exception. The housing market has displayed resilience and adaptability in the face of economic shifts, often appreciating in value over time. Purchasing a home now provides an opportunity to benefit from potential future appreciation, contributing to long-term financial stability. Real estate has proven to be a reliable asset class, offering a hedge against inflation and a tangible, appreciating asset.

3. Personalization and Stability: Owning a home provides a sense of sta-

bility and permanence that renting cannot match. Homeowners have the freedom to personalize their living spaces, creating a sense of belonging and identity. This stability extends beyond the emotional realm to financial security, as fixed-rate mortgages ensure predictable monthly payments, shielding homeowners from fluctuations in rental costs.

4. Tax Advantages:

The tax benefits associated with homeownership remain a significant draw. Mortgage interest deductions, property tax deductions, and potential capital gains advantages contribute to a more favorable financial landscape for homeowners. These tax incentives can result in substantial savings over time, further enhancing the overall appeal of purchasing a home in 2024.

5. Changing Work Dynamics:

The shift towards remote work and flexible schedules has altered the way individuals perceive and utilize their living spaces. As more companies embrace remote work policies, the demand for homes that cater to both professional and personal needs has surged. Investing in a home in 2024 allows individuals to curate a living environment that seamlessly integrates work and leisure, contributing to a healthier work-life balance. The benefits of buying a home in 2024 extend far beyond the immediate advantages of property ownership. With favorable interest rates, investment potential, personalization options, tax advantages, and evolving work dynamics, the year 2024 presents a unique window of opportunity for those considering the leap into homeownership. As the real estate landscape continues to adapt, now is the time to embrace the future and invest in the stability and prosperity that homeownership can offer.

The Actor’s Strike, Artificial Intelligence, TicToc and the Movie Industry - A Conversation with Actor Jesse Borrego

I recently had the opportunity to interview San Antonio legend Jesse Borrego. He’s a San Antonio native who has been an actor for almost forty years. His impressive list of accomplishments is too long to list, but he started his career on the cast of the hit TV show Fame in 1984. Since then, he has had over eighty movie and television appearances. Some of his credits include New York Stories, Con Air, Follow Me Home, Mi Vida Loca, Blood in Blood Out, Dexter, Fear of the Walking Dead, 24 and Miami Vice. Over the course of his career, he has acted, produced, and directed. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann. In 2021, Borrego received the prestigious distinction of being invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a voting member. Borrego is as vibrant as ever, and had much to say. We talked about the post COVID film and entertainment industry, the recent actors strike, and his current work with San Antonio College. To say the movie entertainment industry has changed over the last few years is an understatement. For several years now, the movie industry has been competing with endless streaming options, podcasts, video games, and of course, social media. Although it may seem that they can all exist in harmony, that may not necessarily be the case. On some level, the competition for views, and ultimately people’s time, is a zero sum game. There are only so many hours in a day. And if more and more of those hours are absorbed by other sources of entertainment, there are fewer and fewer hours for people to spend going to movie theaters. COVID didn’t help. During the pandemic, people were forced to spend time at home and find alternative forms of entertainment. While COVID appears to be behind us for the most part, it doesn’t look like we’re ever going

back to the way it was. Many people still work from home, at least some percentage of the time, and consumer’s entertainment habits appeared to have shifted, permanently. Add to this, the shortened attention span of the average consumer, thanks to exponential growth of platforms like TicTok, and you have what appears, at least in my opinion, to be an existential crisis for the motion picture industry. The digital age has caused tectonic changes in the movie industry that have been shifting for years now. COVID seems to only have accelerated them. The shift has been primarily from the movie theater model, to the streaming model. The changes in the industry seemed to have reached a critical mass this year with the writers and actors strikes. This was the longest strike for movie and film actors in history. Issues such as streaming compensation, and the growth of artificial intelligence were at the forefront. Everyone knows that streaming services have been growing for years now. However, the growth in income for actors wasn’t matching the increase in views. Borrego agrees that all of the above was critical to making the strike happen. It is what led to what he calls a “historical moment” for the industry. For him, every generation has a technological disruption. Ours is the information age, and the progression of that, is the digital age, which is where we are today. Did the actors get everything they wanted in the strike? Not necessarily. But they are a labor group, and he doesn’t believe they are ever going to be able to fully get what they want. They dealt with similar issues in 2007, with the disruption that DVDs brought to the industry. Prior to that, cable television was the disruptor. Throughout these chang-

es, the actors haven’t been compensated every step of the way, and he believes the industry will always do what it can to spend less on labor. The challenges with labor and the industry are now more complex. In addition to the streaming model, now actors have to deal with the disruption that artificial intelligence has caused. Technology can now essentially capture an actors likeness and recreate it, any way they want, without compensation. While some have called this an existential crisis for the industry, this only reinforces Borrego’s belief in the need for actors to take the lead in protecting themselves. He believes that actors should get ahead of this, and be proactive in defining what constitutes their intellectual property. For him, it may be wise for actors to capture and define what their likeness and intellectual property is, on a digital level.

book stories have nothing to do with the people that see them. For him, platforms like TicToc may have the shortened attention span of the consumer, and led to this.

While he applauds the actors union for their efforts, and believes this last strike got the attention of the industry executives, at least from a bruised ego perspective, he believes there is still a long way to go. He was also pleased to see the top tier actors support the union. While he believes the movie theater model is essentially dead, and won’t go back to the way it was, he believes it will continue to exist in some form. Although likely more as a boutique model, or as entertainment centers.

Borrego, ultimately believes that the industry will go back to more human storytelling because it’s authentic, which is ultimately what people will want to buy. And while he feels that the streaming model has killed old theater model, storytelling itself will never go away. He is firm in that there there will always be the need, and a market, for authentic storytelling that will never go away. For him, the art of storytelling is ancient and will always be about the human experience. People need to be able to hear these stories to uplift themselves. While there was money to be made during the bottleneck, as the shift from theater to streaming took place, streaming services aren’t as profitable as they once were. He sees this as an advantage to the creators, and it places intellectual property development and protection at the forefront, with economy created off of that. The major shifts in the industry, can also be seen to favor creatives.

For Borrego, in this changing landscape, there should also be an importance on what direction we chose to send this new digital age. For example, for years now, the film industry has been dominated by comic book stories. Although they may have their place in cinema, and their profitability undeniable, he believes their dominance in the industry has left the human narrative as their casualty. As he notes, many times these comic

For Borrego, who is on the San Antonio College, Radio, Television and Broadcasting (RTB) Program Advisory Board, the current climate has become a challenge. His brother James Borrego is also the Radio Television and Film Program Coordinator there. He is passionate about seeing students trained to be the next filmmakers, entertainment creators, and culture creators, however the industry often hires them to do something that has nothing to do with them. He believes this is counter productive to what he believes is important as artists. This is nothing new, but there is an ongoing power struggle between the industry leaders and the creatives.

Borrego definitely sees a path forward for the average creative, whether it be through movies, television, or some other alternative content creation. In a sense, there may be more opportunities now to have their voices heard. For Borrego, education is the key, which is something he has always pushed throughout his career. Whether it’s a formal college education, vocational training, or social training, he believes this is what will give future generations the tools they need to succeed in the industry. He firmly believes that the skillset of visual storytelling hasn’t changed. It doesn’t matter the format or platform. He also wants more of the creative workforce trained right here in San Antonio. He believes that education, in whatever form, can teach them valuable leadership skills to succeed going forward. At SAC, he encourages the students to be cultural creatives whatever their background. He wants to see them continue to push the envelope regardless of the medium. What the cultural impact of the potential loss of the movie theater industry remains to be seen. Your guess is probably as good as mine, but as I posed this question to Borrego, he’s not discouraged in the least. He simply thinks that the movie industry will only develop, and continue to evolve as the technology evolves. Perhaps more important for him than the changes the platforms take, is the need for those in the industry to be responsible, professional human beings, and for authenticity to prevail. Philip A.
