Andy Villa Andy Villa was born and raised in Ingleside, TX, a small community north of Corpus Christi. “My parents picked cotton and would often tell us stories of how their fingers bled from picking from sunrise to sunset”. Because they had to work to help their parents and family survive, neither graduated from high school. “My parents did not know much about higher education, so they never encouraged us to go to college or seek a vocation, but they always made sure we made good grades, and they instilled in us, by example, a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility”. Villa's determination, and the

lessons he learned from his parents propelled him towards college and ultimately, entrepreneurship. In 2002, Andy Villa started META Consultants that focuses on helping non-profits increase revenue, evaluation of data to measure outcomes, and other professional development services. In 2011, he started Comprehensive Home Health, and in 2018, he opened Comprehensive Hospice Care, along with his business partner. Today, Mr. Villa serves as CEO/President of all three business entities.

His businesses stand as a testament to Villa's dedication to helping others. His focus on providing high-quality home care services, including skilled nursing, therapy, and social work, demonstrates his commitment to the well-being of his patients.

I have always had a strong connection with art and painting. As a child, I was surrounded by it daily. My Grandfather, Mother, Aunts, and Uncles were all artists and it was a common sight for me to watch one of my family members painting in real-time. For me though, I first felt a connection to painting when I was in High School, but it wasn’t until in college that my connection deepened further and I became inspired by my travels abroad. A fascination for colors grew into adulthood; I admire colorful scenes of everyday life in the city, at the beach, or park. For many years before going to the Art Students League, I tended to embrace the beauty of nature, a characteristic that has brought a nurturing and spiritual effect to my work. I was attracted to bright, bold colors and the excitement of adventure. I had fun exploring and finding who I was as an artist during my travels, but once settled back home in New York, I felt the urge to continue my studies and acquire additional guidance. Joseph Peller was my first teacher, he taught me the use of shadow and light, which is a tremendous tool that I use in my painting practice. Gregg Kreutz taught me to be courageous in New York City, to take my supplies, and set up and paint a street scene from life. Gregg is the reason I started Plein-air painting. Tom Torak taught me how to implement movement into the initial sketch of a painting, a great tool that adds impressions of a classical tradition: the linchpin of his class. It was at the Art Students League that I acquired many skills that propelled my art career.

Today, I favor subjects that have meaning for me personally. The Brides, Dripping Dots, and Plein-air scenes have become a part of my daily practice, among the Hearts and other impressionist scenes.

With the Brides series, I aim to create exotic forms with expressive and highly textural brushstrokes that are full of intense color, loosely inspired by artists of the French Impressionist movement such as Renoir, Degas, and Mary Cassatt. All impressionists whose works blend traditional academic art with the radical movements that went on to dominate the art world in the 20th century. I try to capture impressions of “The Ballerinas” which are found in many of Degas works where he has captured movement like never before. With the music I listen to, my brush lands on the canvas with immediate rhythm and style. I want the Bride to have a dazzling explosion of variable life to symbolize the future that lies ahead for her. The surprise of the rhythm is what excites me while creating these pieces, and I aspire to bridge what I’ve learned in school with my passion for exuberant abstraction and depth of color into the essence of her figure and spirit.

While I focus on a variable of subjects, they have remained consistent over the last decade, today, I continue to use new techniques to create joy and surprises for the viewer.

CHERRIES Kay Karcher Mijangos Illustrations by Laura Mijangos

Material Media Press to Publish Children’s Book Based on the Life of Well-Known San Antonio Artist Alberto Mijangos The late Alberto Mijangos, the beloved and widely collected San Antonio artist, teacher, and longtime promoter of Mexican culture, inspired a new children’s book, Looking For The Cherries, to be published in September by Material Media Press.

Told through the eyes of Alberto’s fictitious granddaughter, Frankie, Looking For The Cherries is authored by his second wife, Kay Karcher Mijangos, with illustrations by his daughter, Laura Mijangos-Rapp. “I wrote this book to spread Alberto’s wisdom about how to live a meaningful life.” It is a story for all children and all ages.

In Looking For The Cherries, Frankie recounts important milestones in Mijangos’ life, beginning with his arduous trek from Mexico City as a young man. But all these details are only meant as an allegory of the challenges of Everyman. While Mijangos’ particular life entailed struggles in many forms, his path to transformation remains profoundly universal. This is the theme of the book.

Mijangos’ oldest child, Laura, is the book’s talented illustrator. Every elegant, exquisite, and sensitive illustration reveals her love for her father. “Creating these illustrations about my dad was so much fun because he had such a playful side to him. He was young at heart and had a great rapport with his grandchildren. I used the memories I have of his relationships with them to create this loving and inspiring bond between him and Frankie.”

Laura added that she enjoyed collaborating with Kay, her stepmother. “We had the same goal – to share my father’s wisdom and inspiration. I am very grateful to her for inviting me to be part of this beautiful project,” she said.

Lionel Sosa, a fellow artist, and friend of Alberto said “Looking for the Cherries is a salute to one of the most wonderful human beings he’s ever known and to one of the most accomplished and sophisticated artists to ever come out of Texas.

Guillermo Nicolas said Looking for the Cherries is an ode to Alberto’s positive outlook on life. “I knew Alberto most of my life.

I was his friend, his student, and an avid collector of his artwork. He loved young people, and this work will introduce him to a new generation.”

About Alberto Mijangos Born in Mexico City, Alberto Mijangos felt the pull of art from a young age and, as a boy, watched Diego Rivera work on one of his epic murals. He attended art school until, at the age of 16, his mother died. When he and his father could not live peacefully together, Alberto sought a new life in the United States. With $6 to his name, he made his way to the Texas border and Chicago.

After moving to San Antonio, he landed a job as a window dresser for a major department store. In 1959, he was named director of the Mexican Consulate’s Art Gallery. After Hemisfair ’68, Alberto was instrumental in transitioning the Mexico Pavilion to the Mexican Cultural Institute, where he created an important cultural exchange between the United States and Mexico, organizing major exhibits of Mexican art, music, and dance in San Antonio.

In 1979, Alberto began painting again and pursued his dream of being a full-time artist until his death in 2007. In 1996, he opened the Salon Mijangos, where students and other artists painted and learned alongside him.

About the Author Kay Karcher Mijangos is a lifelong educator and a dedicated student of Maria Montessori’s philosophy of education. After 30 years as a Montessori preschool guide, she founded and became headmistress of St. Paul’s Episcopal Montessori School in San Antonio.

Looking For The Cherries is her first book. She is donating her royalties to fund scholarships for underserved children.

About the Illustrator Laura Mijangos-Rapp graduated from Trinity University in 1979 with a BA in Fine Arts and later studied painting with her father.

Laura is a figurative abstract artist who works primarily in mixed media. Her inspiration is often life experiences and the lessons they teach.

Guide Dogs of Texas Celebrates the Graduation of Exceptional Guide Dogs Guide Dogs of Texas (GDTX) is proud to announce the successful graduation of its latest group of guide dogs from its Advanced Training Program. A graduation ceremony was held this afternoon at Morgan’s Multi-Assistance Center at Morgan’s Wonderland. These remarkable canines have completed their rigorous training and are now ready to embark on their life-changing journey with individuals in Texas who are living with vision loss or low vision. The graduation ceremony marked a poignant moment as these dedicated guide dogs met their new owners – Guide Dogs of Texas clients - for the very first time.

The graduating guide dogs have spent the past 6 months refining their skills and have been carefully matched with individuals across Texas who live in Beeville, Kerrville, Alpine and Houston. Each client has met the qualifications needed to be successful living and working with and caring for a trained guide dog.

The graduation ceremony is not only a significant milestone for the dogs and their new owners but also a heartwarming occasion for the dogs’ devoted volunteer puppy raisers. These individuals selflessly volunteered their time and love to raise and care for these remarkable dogs for up to a year and a half, nurturing them prior to their advancement into the advanced training program – the final stage for a guide dog in training is deemed ready to serve. Many of these puppy raisers hadn’t seen their furry companions for 6 to 9 making it an emotional reunion and a truly touching moment for all involved.

Upon completion of the advanced training program, Guide Dogs of Texas ensures the ongoing well-being of both the guide dogs and their owners. As part of the Annual Continuing Education and Support

program (ACES), clients receive a series of postgraduate visits the first year at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, followed by a yearly home visit thereafter. These visits are essential in ensuring that the guide dogs continue to provide the vital support needed by GDTX clients.

Guide Dogs of Texas CEO Pat Glines expressed his enthusiasm for this important event, stating, “This graduation represents the culmination of months of hard work and dedication by our outstanding guide dogs, their puppy raisers, and our dedicated professional team. We are immensely proud of the impact these dogs will have on the lives of our clients, and we are grateful for the support of our donors and sponsors that make this possible.”

Our model Judy Guevara is a dark brunette. Cynthia did a mix of different hand painting techniques to achieve a golden buttery tone. I was always fascinated by the fashion industry. I remember in high school a buddy of mine and I tried to start our own clothing brand. I had no idea that my dreams of modeling would become a reality.

Earlier this year, my hair stylist gave me Al Zavala’s phone number, a photographer that works with Nelson Fashion Group.

I reached out to him; we had a phone call and he invited me to the Wonderland of the America’s mall where Lari Nelson Fashion Group is located. When I arrived, I was able to meet Ms. Lari Nelson and Al in person. They both welcomed me into the agency with open arms. Being able to work with Ms. Lari has completely changed my life for the better. She has opened so many doors for me and it has been an honor to learn from her.

Ms. Lari has truly helped me become a better model and person since I joined her agency.

I was advised by Ms. Lari to start acting as well. At first, I was a bit hesitant. But she still encouraged me to give it a try. She recommended that I visited Acting Studios 101 in San Antonio which is run by Jazmen Bleu. I decided to attend one of her classes and I must say that was one of the best decisions I could have made. I fell in love with acting again. Jazmen has helped

me sharpen my acting skills tremendously. She has taught me how to audition for roles, how to speak to agents, and how to make a character my own. I have become a much better overall talent from attending her classes.

I also want to credit Shak Kanish, I met him at one of my first Nelson Fashion Group meetings and we instantly clicked. He has been extremely crucial in my development. Shak worked with me one-on-one almost daily whenever I had questions or needed extra help learning the industry. He helped me get out of my shell and boost my confidence as a model, actor, and throughout my day-to-day life. I am proud to call him one of my mentors and a friend.

I recently went to the June 2023 Dallas Model and Talent Expo hosted by Mike Beaty. There I was able to win several awards in both modeling and acting. I was also able to receive callbacks from over 10 agencies from markets located in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Miami, and more.

This was all possible by learning from Ms. Lari Nelson. I am forever grateful for everything that she has done for me, and I am extremely excited for the future.

Social Soiree of the Month White Party 2023 White, Light and Blue Skies

By: Desiree H. Serna, MPA Fabulously known as “Karlos with a K,” local celebrity hairdresser and San Antonio socialite, welcomed a lively crowd into his eclectic Villa in Mahncke Park for his annual White Party 2023 benefiting Fuerza Unida, a local nonprofit.

The remarkable host Karlos grandly entered the soiree smelling of roses, jeweled…like a White Orchid. Whoever said wearing white after Labor Day is a faux pas, obviously has not experienced the fabulous White Party hosted by Karlos with a K. “I create fashion and I absolutely believe you can wear white after Labor Day!” declares the incredibly fab host of the White Party Karlos with a K. The spectacular white themed affair was attended by San Antonio society proper wearing their most extraordinary fashions for the Villa’s garden party.

I am Nia Moore. I was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, but raised in San Antonio, Texas. I’m a model, singer, and actress. I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish when I was younger, but modeling, acting, and singing were always goals of mine. However, I didn’t know where to start, going in and out of different agencies without direction. I was fortunate to come upon Lari Nelson. Lari became my mother agent and not only taught me the appropriate way to model, but she also introduced me to Acting101, where I receive acting and vocal training.

After 11 months of modeling, vocal, and acting training, I was confident enough to attend the Model & Talent Expo in Dallas, Texas. During my time at Expo, I learned a lot

about myself and that the possibilities are infinite if I put my mind to them and believe in myself. I had multiple agencies and a record label interested in representing me.

After attending Expo, I signed a contract with Brogan Agency in Los Angeles, CA. When I’m not working, I’m enrolled at Northwest Vista, pursuing my second degree in digital video and film production to better understand what happens in front of and behind the camera. I hope to one day develop my own films or television series.

My long-term aspirations include furthering my professional career, traveling, and establishing my own business.

Hi everyone, my name is Shandel Hi everyone, my name is Shandel Koehn pronounced as (Shandel Cane) and this is my story about how I have been blessed with so many opportunities leading up to where I am at now.

I was born and raised in Dodge City, Kansas and went to The University of Kansas for my college years in Lawrence, Ks. I was grateful to have had the opportunity to be a Jayhawk cheerleader during my time there. After graduation I moved down to San Antonio, Tx and have been here for 3 ½ years now. Being a cheerleader my whole life and being granted with all the talents I’ve been given, I knew I wanted to become a model/actress from having all the camera action in the past but never took action in actually pursuing it.

As my time here in Texas, I have to give a huge thank you to my boss who encouraged me to branch out and go to one of the interviews with who is now my mother agent, Lari Nelson Fashion Group. I have been with the Lari Nelson Fashion Group since January 2023, and just in 6 months of being with my mother agent I went to Expo in Dallas Tx, of June 2023.

Not knowing much experience but being in a total of maybe 10-12 gigs beforehand made me push for excellence even more with being featured in a commercial with apple productions and other photoshoots to become ready to compete and perform my best at Expo.

Let me tell you it was nothing but an incredible experience getting to meet many agents, from all over the world, while performing runway, monologues, two-person scene, and a cold read for commercials. I received 7 callbacks from LA/Dallas/ Atlanta/Louisiana/NewYork and signed with my LA/Hollywood agent, Avalon Artist. Leading up to where I’m at now, took hard work, time, and dedication from ongoing training/ classes, to achieve getting signed on with a Top LA Agent for acting.

Fast forward, I have been auditioning for movies and going to casting roles at this present time and hope to be featured or staring in movies and shows and becoming a successful model/ actress. I have learned so much in just 8 months. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my mother agent, Lari Nelson.

She has shown me many skills throughout my whole time working with her in this industry. I am eternally grateful for all she’s done with her help and guidance alongside with my photographer, Al Zavala. I’m so excited for what the future holds for me, and remember to never give up on your dreams, you just have go out there and try, like I did! :)

An Extrodinary Culinary Experience from Chef Maldonado!

From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I could sense the anticipation in the air as guests eagerly awaited the gastronomic journey that awaited them.

The evening commenced with a delightful Asparagus soup that set the tone for the rest of the meal. The soup was a perfect blend of flavors, with the freshness of the asparagus shining through, leaving us craving more. Chef Kevin's attention to de-

tail was evident in every spoonful, and it was clear that he takes great pride in sourcing the finest ingredients.

Next came the much-anticipated filet mignon, and it did not disappoint. The succulent and perfectly cooked meat was accompanied by a medley of seasonal vegetables and a tantalizing sauce that enhanced its natural flavors. Each bite was a revelation, and the dish was a true testament to Chef Kevin's culinary skills.

To conclude the meal on a sweet note, the tasty cheesecake was presented with an artistic flair. The velvety texture and harmo-

nious blend of flavors made it a divine indulgence that left us in awe of Chef Kevin's dessert mastery.

What stood out most throughout the evening was not only the exceptional quality of the food but also Chef Kevin's humble and down-to-earth demeanor. He mingled with the guests, sharing insights into his creations and graciously accepting compliments. His passion for cooking and dedication to his craft were evident in every aspect of the event.

The combination of Chef Kevin's culinary talent and his warm

personality created a dining experience that felt like an intimate gathering of friends rather than a formal event. Beautiful Genarrios Trattoria provided the perfect backdrop for this memorable evening.

In conclusion, Chef Kevin Maldonado's summer event series was a resounding success, offering a journey of flavors and a showcase of his undeniable talent. If given the chance, I would eagerly attend another of his events, as it was an evening of sheer culinary bliss.

Historically, this is when our winter vegetables ripen with their rich carbohydrates along with preparing more hearty dinner fare rich with protein and fats to see us through the winter chill.

With the cooler temperatures, we also naturally gravitate to more hearty wines including full bodied reds and rich whites. We love classic fall wines such as oaked Chardonnay white wine and beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon based reds. With today’s wine selections, we can look beyond the traditional “international varieties” and explore fun, exciting and new grapes which delight our palettes while still delivering a classic mouthfeel we expect for fall.

I believe the founders Doug and Lori Horn are consistent in quality and their golden goose, Dough’s Pizzeria, is a fan favorite as true pizza aficionados. I have also witnessed a nice wood fired pizza oven come and go because it was not good enough to bring the most authentic pie to San Antonio. I can honestly say, Dough’s has the best wood fired (Italian) pizza ovens (2) in San Antonio.

Obviously, Dough’s Pizzeria Napoletana location on Blanco Road in San Antonio, Texas is our favorite. We

have honestly seen managers, chefs, sous chefs, pizzaiolos and servers come and go, and employee turnover does not matter. Quality and delightfulness of presentation never waivers!

Rarely do we find the quality of flavor, texture and presentation, culinary experience year after year. My humble advice is to go beyond your own neighborhood, spend some money, go to Doughs! Taste the house made burrata, Margherita pizza, or invite your friends for the Campionatore, the sampler of all burrata served, which is my favorite, and comes with brick wood fired oven baked flatbread! The select wines, beers, and filtered water invite you to experience an adult evening away from the chains and the processed food presented in too many other so-

Dissociative Identity Disorder 57.8 million Americans presently live with a mental illness, per the National Institutes of Health (2023). What does that translate to? Roughly one in five Americans will be diagnosed with a mental health condition that greatly impacts their functioning in everyday life.

With Americans being aware of the growing number of incidents or issues in the media regarding persons impacted by a mental health condition, some of the lesser known conditions are starting to get their due notice.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) is a serious chronic condition that effects fewer than 2000,000 Americans. People who are diagnosed with this experience "a disconnection between thoughts, memories, feelings, surrounding, behavior, and identity (Mayclinic.org) This causes a break from reality in a maladaptive manner, rendering it difficult to function in everyday life.

For people who experience dissociative identity disorder, it is a response to a traumatic event that has caused the brain to be able to separate itself from the pain of the event and the person experiencing the event. These symptoms can be exacerbated during high times of depression, stress, and anxiety. This can cause a person to revert back to the age and time of the trauma many years later, and distort their present reality. With people who are diag-

nosed with this, they will toggle into their other identities that live within their minds but are very real to them. In my work with these patients, their whole demeanor, voice, affect, mannerisms, behaviors, ages, and even their names and genders may change. These persons will switch into these different personalities dependent on the situation or trauma, and often have a different identity formed based on the different ages or stages of their life trauma that they

can identify. It causes issues in employment, relationships, socialization, memory loss/amnesia, cognitive abilities, and can increase symptoms of co-occurring disorders.

Persons with this diagnosis have issues coping with high stress situations, as well as they have an elevated risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation and attempts. It is very important that if someone is experiencing self-harming or suicidal ideation symptoms, that an emergency line be called.

So what do you do when you love someone who has these symptoms? What if this describes you?

It should be stressed that this is not a common trauma response, so when a person is experiencing this, regular and

routine psychiatric and psychological treatment is crucial.

Identifying a support network as well as a collaborative team approach to helping aid a person in managing these symptoms is important to develop for long term success.

Educating yourself about this diagnosis and connecting with support groups like National Alliance on Mental Illness are also beneficial, not just for the patient, but for their loved ones too.

If we as a society can break down our guard and have honest conversations about mental health, we can also break down the stigma that creates barriers from accessing mental health care.

By Lisa Scharf Fitness Editor Spontaneity when traveling is extremely rare and definitely a luxury, especially when traveling with a family of five.

This past weekend I experienced that rare luxury when my family traveled to Tampa, Florida to attend the Lions-Buccaneers game and to visit my husbands Aunt Bonnie & her family.

The weather in Tampa during our visit was pristine, 80 degrees and sunny. The beach was beautiful with balmy 65 degree water. I am always amazed with the type of energy our boys have, non-stop body surfing, boogie boarding, playing football and finding the time in an eight hour beach day to collect sea shells for their Nana.

Sunday’s weather was epic, perfect for NFL Football. The game matched two teams on the rise. The Detroit Lions entered this road contest with a 4-1 record. Where as, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a 3-1 record, as they have already had their bye week.

Unfortunately, the game did not live up to its billing with the Lions defeating the Buccaneers, 20-6 to earn their 5th victory in 6 games.

Spontaneity is rare and a luxury, however on a Mid October weekend, the Scharf family was blessed to experience such a luxury and do the most important thing a family can do together-create memories.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The Ugly Truth Alzheimer’s and dementia are a growing concern, and as of 2023, it’s estimated that 6 million Americans are affected, with the numbers expected to be 13 million by 2050. The fact that the number is expected to grow and not reduce should greatly concern you. Our resources and technology in the US should allow us to prevent and reduce the incidence, not allow the numbers to grow. One in three seniors dies of Alzheimer’s, a number larger than prostate and breast cancer deaths combined.

Alzheimer’s costs the nation $345 BILLION and, by 2050, could rise to $1 trillion if we don’t gain control. Consider the caretakers, too. 11 million Americans provide 18 billion hours of unpaid care to their loved ones valued at over $350 billion.

The statistics of race disparity of Alzheimer’s and dementia are as follows: Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women.

Older Black Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as older Whites.

Older Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as older Whites.

Access to medical care, lack of insurance coverage, and lack of education and resources account for most of this disparity. Alz-

heimer’s has been named Type 3 Diabetes, and the incidence of Diabetes has increased in Hispanic and Black Americans.

How can we gain control? The contemporary medical system is geared toward treatment after the diagnosis to slow progression and not prevent its onset. Like all diseases, The genetic modifications of foods, the stressful American lifestyle, lack of exercise, hormonal imbalances, reduced nutrition, fast food, and instant food practices, etc., from birth lead to the insidious development and progression of inflammation and damage to the neurological system and it can be prevented at an early age.

The bandaid effect of contemporary medicine to wait until the disease is reported is backward and inefficient at best. 4 out of 10 patients report their concerns about memory loss to their doctors at an early stage. My clinical experience is that patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s don’t realize they are struggling. In almost all cases, it’s the family or spouse that brings up the concern of memory lapses. The actual patient doesn’t see their deficits. When I have a patient in the clinic raising concerns about their memory, the cause is usually from another medical source, such as hormonal imbalances or a condition called MTHFR (genetic defect of folic acid metabolism) or related to medications and more. Patients with true dementia or Alzheimer’s usually do not see their memory lapses and frequently argue with their spouses or family that they are “fine.” Patients with Alzheimer’s seem to slowly disappear, while simple medical memory lapses keep their personalities and behaviors. Those with Alzheimer’s or dementia fade over time and are seemingly unaware. The best source of therapy is in prevention and from an early age. Diagnosis is complex, and testing is still very obscure and a process of elimination. By the time diagnosis is affirmed, in most circumstances, it is too late to make any significant effect.

The caretakers suffer greatly. Caretakers are usually spouses and children, and almost always one child in the family and not balanced between multiple children or family members to share the rhetorical load. The time spent is arduous and not paid time.

Work hours and social life hours are lost, and the caretaker becomes engulfed in isolation. I frequently tell caretakers to purchase the book “The 36-Hour Day” by Nancy Mace, MA, for its extensive efforts at assisting caregivers with tools to manage their emotions and frustrations and resources and guidance of all types.

An issue most are not aware of is the disproportionate number of health care providers to cover the needs of the significant numbers of patients with Alzheimer’s. The numbers of providers, such as PCP (primary care providers,) doctors such as neurologists or geriatric specialists, nurse practitioners or physician assistants knowledgeable in Alzheimer’s, home health, or rehab specialists, are lacking. By 2050, the number of specialists will have to quadruple to make a significant difference and improvement in the outcome of disease management in America. At this

time, most medical professionals are lacking in knowledge of how to diagnose and treat neurological disorders.

As mentioned, the scope of the issue rests on preventative measures. Primary care in tending to the body's needs is where all diseases are prevented. Inflammation is at the heart of almost every ailment, from heart disease, cancers, diabetes, autoimmune illness, mental illness, and more. It rests in increasing knowledge of improved eating habits and nutrition, exercise, reduced stressors, sleep, and mental health self-care, and not everyone has access to such basics.

The breadth of this topic is immense, and my goal is to introduce the severity of this issue, bringing awareness to the forefront. Too much exposure to UV light Too much exposure to UV light increases the risk of eye diseases and other problems. Here are some of the eye conditions you can avoid by wearing sunglasses: - Cataracts and eye cancers can take years to develop. Every time you sunbathe without eye protection, you increase your risk of developing serious diseases. Babies and children should wear hats and sunglasses for this very reason. People of all ages should take precautions when outdoors. - Abnormal growths in the eye, such as pterygium, can appear in the teens or early 20s. Surfers, skiers, fishermen, farmers, and others who spend long hours in the midday sun or near rivers, oceans, and mountains are at risk. Snow blindness is a form of photokeratitis that can develop rapidly after exposure to UV reflections from snow, ice, sand, or water. Protect your eyes from sun damage in every season Many people forget to check the UV rating of their sunglasses before buying them. Be sure to choose sunglasses that give you 100% UV or UV400 protection, or block both UV-A and UV-B rays. Here are additional tips to protect your eyes from UV damage, no matter the season: - Wear a hat along with your sunglasses. Wide-brimmed hats are best. - Protect children and older adults with hats and sunglasses. Everyone is at risk

of sun damage. - Know that clouds do not block UV light. The sun's rays can pass through the mist and clouds. - Sunlight is most intense from midday to late afternoon, at higher altitudes, and when reflected off water, ice, or snow. - Never look directly at the sun. Doing so at any time, even during an eclipse, can damage the retina of the eye, causing a serious injury known as solar retinopathy. - Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds present the same risks to the eyes and body as outdoor ultraviolet light.

Sunlight and your health Healthy exposure to sunlight can have positive effects, as long as you protect your eyes from UV damage. You need some natural light every day to sleep well. This is because the light-sensitive cells in our eyes play an important role in our body's natural sleep-wake cycles. This is especially important as we get older and more prone to insomnia. Spending time outdoors, in daylight, can also help prevent nearsightedness in children. Exercise is not only great for eye health, but exercising outdoors can also be beneficial. Take your children outside to play to help reduce the risk of nearsightedness and teach them healthy habits for lifelong good eye health. Don't forget to wear hats and sunglasses!

Hydrating foods

Hydration – is the replacement of body fluids lost through sweating, exhaling, and eliminating waste. On average the body loses and needs to replace about 2-3 quarts of water daily.

Dehydration – an abnormal loss of water from the body, especially from illness or physical exertion.

There’s no doubt that this Global heat wave has brought about an increase in hospital emergencies and admissions globally due to dehydration and heat strokes.

According to research the body is made of 50 - 70% water.

Women need about 2.7 liters (11-12 cups) of water a day. Men require about 3.7 liters (15-16 cups) a day.

We can survive 2 – 4 days without water, without water or food for one week and with water and no food 2 – 3 months.

When planning out a meal plan and workout plan, I recommend that people multiply their body weight by .66 which equals the

amount of water in ounces to drink each day. Depending on how much cardio or physical activity, you may need to increase water intake and if you eat hydrating foods you can adjust the number of ounces.

There are several fruits and vegetables you can eat to stay hydrated other than water and sports drinks etc. Careful with the sugary drinks and alcohol that cause you to lose fluids, increasing the risk of heat related illnesses.

Keep in mind it’s not just about drinking water but also making sure you replace electrolytes you loose through your pores when you sweat.

Electrolytes - sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.

You can replace electrolytes with electrolyte supplements, sports drinks with zero sugar which include electrolytes in them.

My favorite hydrating sports drink is PowerAde Zero, favorite mineral supplement in capsule form is Nutribiotic Performance Essential Electrolytes.

Opus X, Opus One, a Trademark Infringement Lawsuit, and an Icon That Almost Never Was There are many different types of cigar smokers. Some are casual smokers and some take it a little more seriously. Some smoke on a regular basis, and others only on special occasions. Regardless of which category you fall into, anyone who has spent time around the cigar industry knows, that smoking cigars is an incredible way to bring people together. Cigar smokers come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Although my tendency is to smoke alone, I can honestly say it doesn’t matter what cigar shop, lounge, state, or country I'm in, If I’m smoking a cigar in the company of other cigar smokers, those people are my friends. With that being said, everyone seems to have their own brand or preferences.

For me, it’s Arturo Fuente cigars. Many people will debate this, but I can taste and feel a significant difference in quality. For me, it’s the smoothness and elegance that I haven’t found in other brands. This is particularly so of their rare and higher end releases such as their special Don

Carlos releases and their Opus X line. I have to say, their rich history also adds to the experience.

Arturo Fuente has a particularly unique story. I’d heard the name since I was a kid, but it wasn’t till I got much older that I began to realize the significance of this family in the industry. I won’t go too much into their history, because all of this can easily be found online, but let’s just say this family is the embodiment of hard work and determination. Cuban immigrants who moved to Florida in 1902 for a better life, Arturo Fuente struggled to make it in the cigar industry. At one point his cigar factory burned down, and almost ended the business. In 1958 his son Carlos would eventually take over the struggling business, but he would have to deal with the Cuban embargo. In the years following the embargo, efforts were made to establish production in Mexico and Puerto Rico, but the quality at these factories was not sufficient. The production spent

some time in Nicaragua, however a fire, and a Nicaraguan revolution, would cause them to eventually land in the Dominican Republic. Their business would be decimated over and over by revolutions, fires, and hurricanes. However, over the years they never gave up. This is particularly impressive to me considering the inevitable political and major infrastructure challenges they would encounter.

Another significant challenge they would face was a Trademark Infringement lawsuit by one of the most powerful families on the planet. Around 1996, during the cigar boom, Carlos Fuente Sr., and his son Carlito Fuente were both running the company out of the Dominican Republic.

Chateau de la fuente, their deservedly famous cigar farm,

was producing some of the best cigars in the world. One day a well known french tobacconist visited the Chateau, and famously made a comment to Carlito. He told him that he would never be a great cigar maker because he was only assembling the tobacco, not making it.

Cigars are made of binder, wrapper, and filler. At the time, the Fuentes were getting their wrapper from other countries because, for various reasons, you couldn’t grow cigar wrapper in the Dominican Republic. Carlito not resting on the company’s success, and just as determined as his father, would eventually find a way to make a Dominican wrapper. In 1997 the first all Dominican (puro) cigar was made. As it turns out, it wasn’t just a good cigar, it would go on to be one of the highest regarded and the

most sought after cigars in the world. Its name: Opus X. According to the story, Carlito named it that because he wanted to convey the opulence of the cigar. The “X” was the special name they gave for the project that came from the tv show “Planet 9”.

The problem was that there was another product with a similar name, Opus One wine. This wine was created by the famous Barron d Rothschild from france and Robert Modavi from California. They created this iconic and beautiful wine as a marriage between the old world of France and the new world of California wines. The company would eventually be sold, but the winery and their iconic wine still exists today in the Napa valley. In 1997 they sued the Fuente family for trademark infringement, that their Opus X cigar infringed on their iconic wine of a similar name.

This was serious business. The plaintiffs not only wanted

the Fuentes to stop using the name, but to destroy the entire Opus X brand. To put it another way, it could have bankrupted Arturo Fuente cigars. As a lawyer I can tell you, it’s no secret, that lawsuits are expensive, and the outcome is never certain, regardless of the facts. The Fuente’s had a lot to think about. In the end, they would’t back down. In an interview with Carlos Fuente Sr. he states he told Carlito Jr. to fight the lawsuit with everything we have. He states I came from nothing, and I’ll start again from nothing if I have to. Hindsight is 2020 but it’s a whole lot different when your tail is on the line. I have a lot of respect for him making that decision.

Fortunately the Fuente’s decision to fight had merit in the law. Yes, the law creates a cause of action if you infringe on another’s trademark, but these are two separate industries. Cigars and wine are not going to get confused. If the argument was coming from another cigar maker that would have been a different story, but it wasn’t. It was

coming from winemaker. After years of litigation, the Fuentes would be successful in defending their lawsuit.

It’s a good thing they did, otherwise we wouldn’t have what I consider to be the best cigars on the market. What I like about their cigars is that they are 100% handmade with the highest standards, and are significantly aged. I’m closer to a special occasion cigar smoker, but when I have one of theirs, I feel like I am smoking a work of art that can’t be copied. I was fortunate enough to meet Carlito Fuente at a cigar event at Finck’s cigars a few weeks back. I have to say, I was a little star struck, but it was an honor to meet what I consider to be the best cigar maker in the world, from one of the most determined families on the planet.
