Public vs. Private Education in Developing Countries: A Matter of

Long-Term Investment

I often find myself criticizing governments worldwide for failing to create opportunities for poor people, especially in the education sector. We certainly should be critical, but must also realize that, as a responsible society, we cannot and should not leave everything to the government and NGOs. The education sector is not exclusively the obligation of the government. If the governments and NGOs cannot cope with the responsibility, then why shouldn’t the private sector do something to balance the lack of good education? In many developing countries, public education leaves a lot to be de-

sired. Teachers are not as motivated to show up regularly, perhaps because they do not feel accountable to the students, but instead to distant government officials. Public school teachers and their unions are sometimes politically divisive; the problems in Oaxaca, Mexico come to mind. On the other hand, the infrastructure of classrooms could be seriously improved; often the infrastructure is below the average standards of a respectful educative environment. Studies by the World Bank and The World Economic Forum have shown that entrepreneurs are realizing that Cont. 2 page...

Salt is used to manufacture some 14,000 products. Salt was in use long before recorded history, ancient man the hunter obtained his salt from eating animal meat. As he turned to agriculture and his diet changed, he found that salt is also abundantly available in natural food in vegetables and fruits. Salt is essential for our health. Salt enables our bodies to perform a variety of essential functions. It is the sodium in salt that is so important, because it helps maintain the fluid in our blood cells and generate and transmit electrical impulses in our nerves and muscles. Not only does it perform important functions within our bodies, it maintains the balance of our fluids, which carry oxygen and nutrients around our bodies, it also plays a key role in keeping our food safe to eat. We have salt in every cell of our bodies about 250 grams (a cupful) in an adult human. That’s why our tears and sweat taste salty. Natural food contains much of the required salt and iodine which is sufficient to keep us healthy and stable, the branded salt which is available in every home today actually lacks minerals like potassium, magnesium and zinc sulphate as these are removed and iodine added, the removed essential minerals are then added to fertilizers for growing of crops.

Social skills Surprisingly to days youth, do not participate in extracurricular activities, and they miss this important social skills learning opportunity. Help your children discover his/her strengths and interests to help them choose the right place for them to learn social skills. Whatever your child enjoys, it is likely there are many wonderful opportunities to learn social skills in your community and for him to join with others. Youth will have the opportunity to see themselves in successful roles outside their colleges and get to know people as friend, rather than an acquaintance.

Eligibility Graduate studies in business requires a good percentage in standard XII from any subject stream. However, subjects such as commerce, economics and mathematics would prepare a candidate better for business studies. Selection is either on the basis of class XII marks or throught an entrance test. Postgraduate studies require a undergraduate degree (BA, BSc. or BTech.) in any discipline and clearance of entrance selection processes. A requirement of a minimum of two years of work experience is likely to be introduced for eligibility to most master's programmes to keep them on par with international management courses.

Long-Term Investment

there is a demand for private education services in the BOP. People in the BOP are also starting to "invest" in private education for their children. Derek Newberry and Seema Patel of NextBillion have blogged about this very issue before - on how there are new private schools in poor areas that charge $1 or $2 USD a month and provide better education. Research done by Prof. James Tooley (winner of the FT Gold Prize Essay) shows that there are many people in the BOP who are willing to invest their money in private education. In the research of his award-winning essay, he found that "…a large majority of schoolchildren in selected poor urban and periurban areas of India and Sub-Saharan Africa using private schools, while in rural India, half of the schoolchildren are privately enrolled. Even in impoverished rural China large numbers of private schools exist off the official radar. The research showed that private schools for the poor are superior to government schoolteachers are more committed, the provision of important inputs are better, and education outcomes better

even after controlling for background variables. All this is accomplished for a fraction of the per-pupil teacher cost of government schools." In the paper, "De facto’ Privatisation of Education and the Poor: Implications of a Study from Sub-Saharan Africa and India," James Tooley and Pauline Dixon make a case study in India on the extraordinary growth of private education. People living in the BOP are aware of the value of education as a long-term investment. Entrepreneurs that would want to invest in education should take this as an opportunity and not just leave the weight of education on the government or NGOs. To private school standards, these schools are not necessarily top-tier schools, but in many cases give a better education than the public schools. I find these private education initiatives to be innovative ways of solving the problems of mediocre public education. These new initiatives give parents in developing countries an option to be able to assure better educational opportunities for their children.

To this day, the medical establishment sees water as little else, when in fact water serves to energize every cell and organ in the body. It is crucial to every bodily operation and when we become dehydrated, the body instinctively begins to ration water to each organ. The brain, being the most important organ, gets the most water. The skin, being the least important, is rationed the least amount of water. Chronically dry skin and/or dandruff are signs of advanced bodily dehydration, as are

asthma and hyperventilation. It is the law of vital adaptation at work; that the body will do what it has to do to survive, which in this case means the most important organs get served first. If the body didn't do that we would suffer the ill effects of dehydration much more rapidly. ● 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population.) ● In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is

often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%. One glass of water deters hunger pangs for 98% of the dieters observed in a University of Washington study. The biggest trigger of daytime fatigue is lack of water. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint

pain for up to 80% of sufferers. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79%, and reduces bladder cancer by 50%. Drinking refreshing, and clean water plays a major role in reducing the risk of certain diseases.

Body Odor

Keeping yourself clean with regular baths is the best way to maintain clean armpits and it is best to avoid harsh deodorants as they can cause problems after long term use. This makes the skin turn black and this is an unsightly thing. To get the skin back to its original color is not easy and you would have to use a lot of whitening creams for a very long time for this. Instead avoid harsh deodorants which harm the skin under the arms which is very delicate. A healthy tip is to dust

your underarms with a talcum powder which is not perfumed instead of using strong smelling ones. The fragrances which are too strong are again bad for the skin. You can also prevent body odor by cutting out spices from your diet. Reduce intake of red meat and foods such as white bread and processed foods. You can on the other hand increase the intake of green vegetables, fresh fruits and raw and boiled vegetables in your diet.

Clip art is a terrific way to jazz up a bulletin board, Bible lesson, or craft idea. There are several websites that offer clip art, and it is simply amazing at how many images are available for little to no cost. The clip art pictures are nicely categorized, so you can easily find a picture that relates directly to a Bible verse or story. Christ Art This site offers a good variation of clip art and most are available in larger sizes. This is great because it prevents

the fuzzy appearance that can occur when you enlarge clip art images in another program. The site requires that you pay $5.95 per month for access to unlimited downloads for the larger images. The smaller images are free to use, as long as the user acknowledges where the clip art came from in the printed or web material it is used for. Gospel Gifs Gospel Gifs is a great site for cute cartoon clip art images. These can be used for bulletin boards and other materials where cartoons fit nicely. Save the images directly to the computer by right clicking on the picture and then clicking on "Save picture as." Enter in a file name and you are ready to open and print. Sunday Software If you are looking for Sunday school clip art software, this site offers two versions. The first is Christian Clickart Deluxe and it offers over 32,000 images on two CDs. This is a directory website that lists many different locations for Sunday school clip art. The site is dedicated to graphics where one can find just about any clip art image being looking for at one of the recommended sites. There are 63 websites listed at the time of this writing. These are just a few of the hundreds of sites and software that are available for Sunday school teachers to locate clip art images. These sites are very informative, and will usually have a terrific assortment of images, including some you never would have thought of. Check them out today. Directions ● First, choose design that is related to the theme of your project. Example, if your project is all about the solar system, you must choose designs related to planets or about the solar system. It is important that your clip art must be in line

with you theme. After choosing what your design or subject is, sketch it into a white paper using pencil. If you don't have talent in drawing, you can simply look for designs from other sources and trace them using your tracing paper. When you're done tracing or making a sketch, make the line more visible by tracing them with a darkinked marker to make a strong and visible line. After tracing them with a marker, you can color the drawing with any color you like or according to how you want it to appear using you colored pencils. Use your creative imagination. Color it heavily for a better resolution. After you are satisfied with your drawing, scan it into your computer and save it in a jpeg or gif files. Using your computer program like Photoshop and other related program or software, you can enhance the color, the brightness, resize or add text to you clip art and, presto, you now have your school project clip art. After everything has been done, you now can add your clip art to your project.

The Art Of Mehndi

The wedding season is on! Indian weddings are noisy colorful family gettogethers, which wouldn’t be complete without certain things - the religious ceremonies, the feast for the guests, and of course, the beautiful mehndi designs adorning the hands and feet of the bride and her friends. Read about mehndi, the ancient Indian body art that’s reinvented itself as a modern fashion accessory. Mehndi: It’s safe and painless since it does not require the skin to be pierced. It’s completely natural and non-toxic. It’s fun, exotic, beautiful, and as simple or complicated as you

want it to be. It can last for a couple of days or as long as a month. It’s a 5000 year old tradition and a modern craze. It was used by our grandmothers and their grandmothers and their grandmothers ... but our daughters and granddaughters also think it’s “cool”. It goes by the name of mehndi, and it’s the ancient Indian art of adorning the hands and feet with intricate designs and patterns, using a paste made from the finely ground leaves of the henna plant. The term refers to the powder and paste, the design on the skin, as well as the party or ceremony. It originated in

Egypt and in Middle Eastern countries during ancient times and it slowly spread to India and other hot climates like Malaysia, Persia, Syria, Morocco, Sudan and North Africa. How it works:The leaves, flowers, and twigs of the henna plant are ground into a fine powder, then mixed with hot water. This paste is traced in a design on the desired body part in much the same way as lettering is traced on a cake with an icing cone. A solution of lemon juice and sugar is applied to the drying mehndi to “set it” and bring out its lustrous texture. The dried paste is scraped off, leaving behind a reddish-

brown stain or temporary tattoo. The color and longevity of this tattoo will depend on how long you leave the paste on the skin (the longer you leave the paste on the darker the stain). For best results (the tattoo lasts for as long as three weeks), let the mehndi dry for 7 to 10 hours. Different shades can be obtained by mixing in various things like indigo, tea, coffee, cloves, tamarind, lemon, sugar, and various oils. For convenience, mehndi is readily available as packs or cones, and design stencils are also obtainable off the shelf. An ancient wedding tradition:From times immemorial, Indian women have used mehndi in celebrations of betrothals, weddings, festivals and other occasions. A bride whose family has little money wears her mehndi in place of ornate gold jewellery. A bride is not expected to perform any housework until her wedding mehndi has faded. A mehndi party is held at the home of the bride the night before the wedding and only women from the bride’s side get to attend. The evening is spent applying mehndi designs to the bride’s hands and feet (and anywhere else)! Indian mehndi designs use reddish-brown mehndi and fine lines, lacy or floral patterns as opposed to the large, floral patterns of Arabic designs, and large, bold geometrically-patterned black henna angles of African mehndi art. They often incorporate the peacock (India’s national bird), the lotus flower (India’s national flower), and an elephant with a raised trunk (a symbol of good luck). A unisex craze:In recent times, mehndi has enjoyed both a revival and a renewal. Actress Demi Moore was among the first celebrities to be seen wearing mehndi. Madonna created quite a stir at the MTV awards function, when she turned up with mehndi all over her body. The adoption of mehndi magic by Western models, musicians, and movie stars (including Naomi Campbell and Drew Barrymore) has led to mehndi tattoos becoming a white-hot fashion trend. Now it is not just hands and feet that are adorned, but also the arms, neck, back and navel.

About Peacocks and Peacock Feathers

SOME NOTES ABOUT PEACOCKS

AND PEACOCK FEATHERS

Indian Peacocks or peafowl (pavo cristatus) have been domesticated for about 3000 years. A common fixture on zoo grounds, animal parks, and many farms and estates around the world, peacocks are among nature’s most dramatically beautiful birds. Their native range is through India, Pakistan, western China, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The peacock’s preferred habitat is lowland and foothills with brush and scattered trees which they use for roosting. Related species include pheasants, grouse, guinea fowl, quail, chickens, and other gallinaceous birds. The male peacock sports about 150 of the long “eyed” peacock tail feathers with which most of us are so familiar. These feathers are shed annually during the molt and gathered as a valuable “crop” in many countries through its range. These feathers are actually long extensions of the upper tail covers. They are supported from underneath by the much shorter tail feathers. These feathers grow to be several feet long, but are shed each year just after the breeding season. Each of these long feathers also has a design near its tip which resembles an eye. The feathers of the peacock are composed of many colors, including

ingredient in fishing fly design most famously in the legendary Royal Coachman pattern. The peacock sword feathers are side tails that are eventually replaced by full eyed feathers as the males molt from season to season. Peacock feathers are a symbol of good luck and well-being throughout Asia and most of the world. An interesting exception is in certain parts of Eastern Europe where the feather often decorated warriors of the invading Mongol hordes and thus were associated with a bad era. Lamplight Feather offeres a wide range of peacock feathers for use in home decor and decoration, mask making and millinery applications, costume and theater productions, wedding decoration, and many other uses. The eyed peacock feathers and peacock sword feathers are available in both full length and short stalk. Bleached peacock eyes are a lovely off white to ivory shade. Dyed feathers can be either fully dyed (over bleached) or stem dyed (over natural). Lamplight also offers peacock body feather plumage and peacock feather trim. Check our catalog pages for these categories.

Crescent sheens of bright blue and green. The shimmering color of the peacock feather is due to a phenomena known as interference. Each feather consists of tiny flat flat branches. When light shines on the feather, we see thousands of glimmering colored spots, each caused by minuscule bowl-shaped indentations. This same principle is also responsible for vibrant shimmering colors of butterflies, pheasants, birds of paradise and humming birds. Recreating the unique color of the peacock feather has posed a challenge to artists and ceramists for centuries. There is a variety of peacock with all white feathers. These are not albino but a color variation of the India Blue peacock. White peacock feathers are rare and difficult to keep in stock. Lamplight occasionally has a limited supply of white peacock feathers from a local farmer in July and August. Peacock feathers have a variety of decorative uses. Placed in a vase for home decor, they stand on their own or in combination with long dried reeds. The beautiful feathers can be incorporated into costumes, mask, head dresses, feather fans, and unique and colorful jewelry like earring, pendants, or full necklace wear. The side fibers (herl) are an important

The male Peacock or scientifically known as Pavo cristatus (Linnaeus) is the the national bird of India. Bottom of Form It is a colorful, swan-sized bird, with a fan-shaped crest of feathers, a white patch under the eye and a long, slender neck. The male of the species is more colorful than the female, with a glistening blue breast and neck and a spectacular bronzegreen train of around 200 elongated feathers. The female is brownish, slightly smaller than the male, and lacks the train. The elaborate courtship dance of the male, fanning out the tail and preening its feathers, is a gorgeous sight. The peacock is widely found in the Indian sub-continent from the south and east of the Indus river, Jammu and Kashmir, east Assam, south Mizoram and the whole of the Indian peninsula. Peacocks are related to pheasants. Found wild in India (and also domesticated in villages) they live in jungle lands near water. They were once bred for food but now hunting of peacocks is banned in India. The Peacock enjoys protection from the people as it is never molested for religious and sentimental reasons. It is fully protected under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

High Blood Pressure Tips If you have diabetes it is even more important to maintain your blood pressure at an acceptable level, which reduces long-term complications associated with this disease process. You should be receiving regular monitoring and advice from you GP/diabetic practitioner. Aim for a healthy weight Ideally try not to gain extra weight in the first place, if you have then try to lose the weight slowly, at about half to one pound a week until you reach a healthy target. This can be easier to achieve if you include exercise as well to burn off those unwanted calories and tone your body as you lose the weight. If you are overweight or obese, carrying this extra weight increases TwinCity

people’s lifestyle

WATER Water suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake causes fat deposits to increase; therefore, increasing water input reduces fat. Why because, the kidneys need water to function properly. Without sufficient water for the kidneys, the kidneys cannot work adequately and

your risk of high blood pressure because the heart has to work very hard to keep blood circulating efficiently. Exercise - be active every day! Even the simplest exercise will help; you can walk, dance, use the stairs, play sports, or do any activity you enjoy. For instance: get off the bus one or two stops early; park your car at the other end of the car park and walk; walk or cycle to the corner shop. Being physically active is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent or control high blood pressure and will help you keep your weight down. It will also help to reduce your risk of heart disease and enhances overall wellbeing. All you need to do is 30 minutes of moderate level activity preferably every day of the week - you can even divide the 30 minutes into shorter 10 minute peri-

ods if you are not used to regular exercise. Exercise does not have to be strenuous; you should start slowly and build up the amount of exercise that you do. It is not advisable, however, to lift heavy weights or to take on certain strenuous activities if exercise has not been gradually and appropriately introduced. If you are worried that your health could be adversely affected by exercise, i.e. you have a heart complaint; make sure that you are reviewed by your GP. Look at what you are eating. Does it contain a lot of sodium? It is suggested that no more than 2.4 grams of sodium should be consumed per day. Read the labels and be aware of hidden sodium, which is known to increase blood pressure. Try not to add salt to your meals.

so this affects some of the water going to the liver. One of the primary functions of the liver is metabolize fat into energy for the body. If the liver needs to do some of the work of the kidneys, the liver cannot work as it should to metabolize fat and so more fat is stored in the body increasing weight and not using the fat as energy. A good estimate is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces

of water per day that you need to drink. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink alcohol, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another two servings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add up to quite a lot. Twenty percent of your water need will come from the food you eat. The rest of your water need should come from the beverages you drink. Water is the best choice. Water is a ubiquitous chemical substance that is composed of hydrogen and oxygen and is vital for all known forms of life. Water refers to its liquid form or state, it covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is found mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other life forms. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability. A recent report (November 2009) suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture. Evaluating the environmental impact of various dietary patterns combined with different food production systems". WATER A LIVING BOON We receive water from the sky. It falls to earth and percolates through the earth, into streams, whirling, tumbling, and absorbing light photons, energy and the minerals essential for healthy life. When it is drunk, the minerals and synergy it offers are absorbed and converted to energy, and it passes back into the earth and the sea - where it evaporates to continue this perfect natural cycle. The intricate perfection of the snowflake is testament to water's structural integrity as it falls, pure and new, from the sky. Natural water is a rarity today due to industrial contamination, woodland loss and the need for centralized water

storage. Drinking water is so important for good health. When you were a kid in school, you learned that each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Every organ in the body heavily depends on water to function properly and to its capacity. We are mostly water. Medieval thinkers still believe water is there to give the body volume; otherwise it would be nothing but dry chemicals. Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. The body cannot work without it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact, all the cell and organ functions made up

in our entire anatomy and physiology depend on water for their functioning. ● Water serves as a lubricant. ● Water forms the base for saliva. ● Water forms the fluids that surround the joints. ● Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration. ● Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste- the best detox agent. ● Regulates metabolism.
